Blue Painted Porch Ceiling Charlestonians paint their porch ceilings a soft blue-green or “Haint Blue” to protect the home and the occupants from evil “haints”. Another theory suggests that the color blue helps keep away insects because they are fooled into thinking the blue paint is in fact the sky. Mostprobably, when blue paints were first used, they contained lye, a noted insect repellant. Source: Sherwin Williams

Blue Bottle Trees
Crissy Rowell Real Estate
Across the Lowcountry, you’ll see trees (natural and constructed) with bottles (often blue) turned upside down on the branches. The tradition dates back to ancient cultures who believed that spirits could live in bottles, most probably from the sound made when wind blows over bottle tops. Evil spirits roving at night would be dazzled by the glass, enter the bottle, be trapped by the small opening and then destroyed by the light of day. The tradition was brought over by African slaves and continues today.

Top 5 Small Business Pitfalls There are many challenges to owning a small business, and these rank among the mostconsistent challenges for small business owners. • Thinking you Know Everything: The economy and your demographic are constantly changing, be willing to change with them. • Working too Much: Burnout is no good. Make sure you schedule an adequate amount of time off for you and your employees. • Business and Pleasure: Be careful to keep personal finances and business finances separate. If you must borrow from one or the other, keep a receipt and replace the funds as soon as possible. • Multiple CFO’s: Having a business partner can be risky, so either have a buyout agreement included in your business plan or hire a Chief Executive Officer instead of having two Chief Founding Officers. • Disrespectful Employees: Instead of hiring friends and family, send every potential employee through the application and interview process and have a consistent method for evaluating employee’s performance on a regular basis.

CUTTING THE CABLE
It’s easier than ever to stream content rather than paying out a lot of money for cable packages that often include channels you do not watch. Here is a brief primer on making the cut. ❑ Assess your viewing habits: what do you watch the most (sports, kids shows, network television, etc)? What is the most important and what can you live with/without? ❑ Determine what option or combination of options best meet your needs: • O ver-the-Air Broadcasts: a digital TV Antenna will allow you to watch all local/regional channels. Learn more: www.antennaweb.org • I nternet-Ready Streaming Device: Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku and the like deliver content from subscription sites like Netflix, Hulu, MLBTV, HBO Now and more to your television. The device connects your television to the internet and provides a user interface for you to easily access the content. • The Computer You Already Own: Free TV and movies abound on sites like Hulu or any of the networks’ official web sites. • Home Entertainment Server: The ultimate setup allowing you to access all of your movies, music, photos and any other files you have stored on basically - a big hard drive. You’ll need at least some technical know-how or ambition. A great intro is found here: http://compnetworking.about.com/od/homenetworking/a/what-is-a-media-server.htm

Carolina Gold Rice Risotto Makes 4 Cups - Carolina Gold Rice Foundation, carolinagoldricefoundation.org Ingredients 3 1/2 c chicken broth
1 T fresh minced thyme
2 T unsalted butter
1 t fine sea salt
3 shallots, minced
1/2 c finely grated Parmesan Reggiano
1 c Carolina Gold Rice, rinsed
1/2 t freshly ground black pepper
1/2 c white wine Method • Heat broth in a small heavy, nonreactive saucepan until it simmers. Pull saucepan to outer periphery of burner and keep liquid at a low simmer throughout cooking process. • Melt butter in a heavy non-reactive 3 qt saucepan over low heat until foamy. Add shallots and sauté, stirring frequently, until the shallots are translucent and have nearly melted into butter. • Add rice, increase heat to medium and sauté, stirring, until grains are coated with butter and have turned opaque. • Add wine, stir and reduce to a glaze over low heat. Add 1 c of hot broth, and stir to cover rice. Cook rice, uncovered, just below a simmer until liquid has nearly evaporated and rice begins to look dry. Add an additional cup of hot broth. Continue to cook risotto in this fashion, adding broth at appropriate intervals, until rice kernels have expanded and no longer have a hard starch center. • Stir in parmesan and pepper. The risotto should look creamy but not wet. Taste for seasoning and serve immediately.

Get Smart About HPV What it is: HPV, or Human Papiloma Virus, is a virus that affects the skin and mucous membranes. There are about 30 types of the virus that can affect the genital areas, mouth and throat of males and females. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection today. At least 50% of sexually active men and women get it at some point in their lives. (Source:CDC)
Diagnosis: Most people infected with HPV have no symptoms. The only way to know for sure if you have the virus is to have yearly screenings such as a pap smear and HPVspecific testing. When the infections are not cleared, they may cause genital warts and, in severe cases, cervical cancer.
Treatment and Prevention: While there is no treatment for the virus itself, you can prevent the effects and lower your chances of getting HPV by practicing safe sex and by getting vaccinated. Unlike other STD’s, condoms lower the risks but may not protect you completely because they do not cover the entire genital area. The HPV vaccine is recommended for girls and women ages 11-26 and boys and men ages 9-26. The vaccines protect against the HPV types that cause most cervical cancers and genital warts.

Palmetto Roses Incorporate palmetto roses into your bouquets, boutonnieres and centerpieces. Southern ladies have been using them to express their devotion since the Civil War when they would give a rose to their true love before they went to war to keep them safe. Palmetto roses can be found in shades of green, yellow and tan and look fabulous on their own or paired with your favorite flowers, grasses and succulents. Better still, they make a beautiful keepsake and can be incorporated into arrangements and wreaths to be enjoyed beyond the big day.
