These basic concepts of design can help you to create a well-designed room. Design Elements: Basic components of design. Space
The dimensions of a room and the area around the components within the room.
Line
An extent of length created by shapes and forms (architectural features, furniture, artwork, etc.) that create balance, provide visual breaks, focus attention and more.
Shape
The two-dimensional area enclosed by lines that add visual interest.
Form
Any three-dimensional object man-made or organic.
Color
Perhaps the most important element of home decor - sets the mood, creates visual interest, enhances or shifts focus from areas.
Texture
The visual appearance of a material - soft, rough, smooth, etc. - used to create visual interest and depth.
Design Principles: Informs how design elements are used to organize and unify the look. Unity & Harmony
Think of your home as a good book with each room being a chapter. You want the storyline to carry throughout the book by using complementary elements throughout to ensure that each room flows into one another.
Balance
The visual weight of a room should be balanced taking into account height, mass and color that give the elements more or less impact.
Emphasis
Decide upon a focal point - or multiple focal points in a large space that draw attention and interest to the space and use it to inform the scale, style, color and theme in the rest of the space.
Rhythm & Repetition
The visual flow of a room that starts at focal point then easily moves through the rest of the space. Created using repetition or progression of elements.
Variety & Contrast
Incorporation of different design elements into the space and using contrasting elements to add visual interest.
Scale
The size of one element or object compared to the space or other objects. Use the elements appropriate for the room's size, scale and purpose.

BUSY WOMAN TIPS
INTERIOR DESIGNERS CONTINUED Michael Mitchell
Curtain Calls Make the best selection for your window treatments: ☐ Function: Choose thicker weight fabrics or add a lining for durability and light blockage. ☐ Aesthetic: Consider the mood of the room and pick a texture that matches the feel. Pick up on other colors in the room to either blend or provide a pop of a new color. For print and patterns, remember the pattern repeats and take that into account in your fabric measurements. ☐ Size: Hanging curtains from the ceiling to the floor allowing 1 - 3 inches of pooling are stylish right now. However, a cafe curtain may work better in a kitchen or bathroom window. Measure the width of the window frame, or measure beyond the window frame and add 2 - 3 inches.

Rug Care 1. Reposition: Rotate every 6 months - 1 year or reconfigure the room’s flow every 1 - 2 years to evenly distribute the wear from traffic. 2. Protect: Use padding to keep it stabilized, protect it’s shape and minimize impact from foot traffic. Minimize sun exposure to help prevent fading of dyes. 3. Clean: Vacuum regularly, using the power brush delicately or use the nozzle attachment, especially on the fringes. Promptly spot clean stains: dab with a dry cloth and rinse with cool water.

WORK / LIFE EFFECTIVENESS Because working women have so many priorities, the Business and Professional Women’s Foundation suggests changing the goal of work/life balance to work/life effectiveness to take into consideration the fact that priorities change from moment to moment and we must adjust accordingly. The organization suggests that employers institute the following strategies to facilitate this goal: Flexibility: telecommuting options, job sharing and shift exchanges, compressed work weeks and predictable schedules Equity: equal pay for equal work and access to positions and promotions Care Giving: flexible and compassionate policies for those tasked with caring for loved ones (children, parents, etc.) Wellness: paid sick time and maternity/paternity leave; encouraging healthy living and lifestyle Retention: mentoring, professional development, career planning and continuing educational opportunities

Beat the Heat Business Attire You can’t wear your bathing suit to the office, so, here are some tips for looking put together when you feel like you’re going to melt into the sidewalk. ☐T ry skirts instead of slacks to allow air to circulate around your thighs. ☐W ear your hair up in a simple yet professional style - a chignon, French twist, French braid, or even a low ponytail. ☐ I f you must wear panty hose (bless you), try alternate types of hosiery, including thigh-high and knee high styles. ☐W ear light makeup to prevent the runny, blotchy look that heat can cause. ☐H eavy perfumes tend to cloy in the heat, making even a little bit just too much. Try a lighter fragrance.

Relax • Be aware of stress factors and your body’s responses to stress so that you can eliminate the stress factors where possible and take active steps to keep other stressors from spiraling out of control. • When you feel your body responding to stress, engage in a relaxation technique (deep breathing, visualization, exercise, massage, meditation and progressive muscle relaxation) that refocuses your attention on something calming. • Practice. Pay attention to your body. When you feel stress coming on, take a deep breath and engage in your relaxation techniques. You will eventually retrain your mind and body.

Bridal Gown Cleaning & Storage • Hang your wedding gown by the loops inside the gown that are connected to the sturdy side seams, and never by the fragile shoulder seams, which can stretch or sag. • Avoid storing your gown in plastic bags or vacuumsealed, plastic-wrapped containers because plastic emits fumes that can yellow your gown and trap moisture that causes mildew. • Ask to inspect your wedding gown personally before it is put into the container, which should be a completely acidfree museum quality archival wedding chest lined with fabric or acid-free tissue. • Avoid storing your bridal gown in the attic or basement where there are extreme changes in temperature or humidity.
