owever for numerous people a little bit of knowledge is seemingly more dangerous than none at all. I speak with particular reference to model scams. I think by now almost everyone is aware that they exist with a large majority understanding the facts about such schemes and cons.

However there remain people who skim read sensationalised material and come to a hideously incorrect conclusion. Read our feature article The Great Modelling Robbery on page 14. Just to set the record straight, the modelling industry is not a charity. It is a business like any other. Would you do your job for free? Whilst some agencies have the budget and ability to provide in advance monies to models, not all do. And just because some of the smaller agencies do not have this facility doesn’t mean that they are automatically trading irresponsibly, illegally or immorally. The modelling profession is not a guaranteed career filled with success and huge wads of cash. If an agent interested in signing you asks you to pay an industry standard charge for professional photographs (up to £150 for a Z-card) then this is acceptable practice. It is also not to be confused with an upfront fee. An upfront fee in line with model scams relates to agency joining fees, which are illegal. If you are asked to pay for a product or service in any industry in advance of receipt this is not foul play. A supermarket doesn’t invoice you 30 days after you have been food shopping does it? If you don’t like it then try your luck with one of the bigger agents. I would like to know how many of the ‘complainers’ actually get on attempting to be signed by high end agents. There is something for everyone out there. I am

not saying go ahead and be scammed. It is like anything in life, if the pendulum swings too far in any one direction thats when problems start. In some cases models are signed who regularly get work as a secondary income. These models have a great time and earn extra cash but do not survive with this as their income alone. It is likely that they are not signed by a high end agent and therefore require to invest a little in their job/hobby, such as portfolio images. This is not a crime! It is idiotic to be paying thousands of pounds for images. But do yourself a favour and research the details before making wild accusations damaging an industry of people who are genuinely making a living at the same time as providing a decent and reputable service. “Claiming, “You charge £100”” for a test shoot, you are a con merchant” is no different to accusing someone of stealing from a shop when they haven’t. So... rant over. I’m sure I will be inundated with ‘complainers’ letters. Bring them on! In other news, we are excited to bring you features and advice on all things modelling inside this issue. We have the beautiful Elite signed model Nena France on our cover, an update from Charlie Machin about her whirlwind of exciting shenanigans over the last few months, a huge fashion and beauty shopping guide for you and lots more. A huge thank you to Kelly Moore for the camera bag (see pic). It is absolutely amazing.

Gone are the days of lugging a boring old black case around with me. I highly recommend one for you lady photographers out there, or even if you aren’t, this is a great bag for carrying your ipad, laptop, model book and everything else you need around with you. Visit www.kellymoorebag. com and check out the fabulous designs available. Mine is the chapel backpack in burnt orange. I love it! Can you tell? Making it to

Vogue My story, by Natalie Cutler

“Hi Natalie, It’s Toon (agent) Are you free to come into the office today? I need you to sign a contract for a shoot you have next week.”

paid off. Of course, thats just it . . .

“Sure, Who am I shooting with?” “Vogue.” For a model, shooting for Vogue is the stuff dreams are made of, and for me I was wide awake and this was my reality. Most girls, including myself, fantasise from a young age about the prospect of one day being able to experience moments like that life changing phone call. Will I ever achieve that? How would I react? What would I spend all that money on? Let me tell you now for the record though, you most definitely do not become an overnight millionaire. In all honesty, the only thought that came into my mind was ‘Really? Well that was easy’. Because just like that, everything I had been working towards, had finally 6

Every Model Magazine

I had been working for it, for many, many years. What the rest of the world do not see, is the relentless amount of focus, dedication, sleepless nights, time and expense I have had to sacrifice just to come close to achieving that 1:10 million shot. Naturally all people tend to see is the very glamorous finished product. Behind the scenes it is very different.

I began my career in what can be considered the ‘taboo’ side of the modelling industry. Pageants. For many years now beauty competitions have had a stigma attached to them, thanks to, I believe mis-guided stereotypes that the media use to paint such a picture. However, I think that they are a great way to prepare girls to launch their career into the modelling industry and provide great training in professional codes of conduct and media handling. This being something not too many models, other than the ones at the top know how to do. However, do keep in mind that the actual working side of modelling can be the complete opposite of pageantry; and not being able to differ between the two can leave some girls falling short. The main thing you MUST learn, is to know your craft. Modelling is the assumed idea that if you’re ‘pretty’ or ‘photogenic’ you can model.

three of his friends from Manila were in London and they wanted to work with me on a location shoot. It was an amazing fun shoot, spent collaborating with like minded people who were all sharing a common goal to achieve an end result. To this day it is still the number one shoot I have ever had the privilege of working on. Of course the real punch line was

that I actually had no idea just how huge Patrick’s ‘friends’ were until afterwards. The photographer that day, turned out to be none other than International sensation Marc Nicdao. Pam Quinonnes was the amazing stylist (a go to girl even for the likes of Sarah Jessica Parker) and finally, make up courtesy of the flawless Robbie Pinera. Together, all three of

them are the Manila dream team that dominate the industry on an international level whilst doing a fantastic job of paving the way for the Philippine market. At the end of the shoot day, Marc asked me if I had ever considered the possibility of working in Asia and truth be told I hadn’t, but then again who would right? Modelling is a hard enough industry within the west side of the world. At the time I started to imagine the horror stories out there. After squandering my ‘doubts’ he kindly offered to forward my pictures to Elite Manila (the Asia base of Elite Model Management). He reassured me they were the best agency to work with and he would personally see I was taken care of. Less than two months later, I was on a flight Manila bound in what was the most spontaneous career move of my life, and I have not looked back since. For years I had always been a planner and a strategist with how best I intended to do well within the industry. Well that like most things in life, didn’t go to plan so I decided for the first time in my life to throw caution to the wind and follow my gut. When I landed in Manila, Marc was there to meet me at the airport and he took me straight to the Elite offices where I met with head booker and the amazing Every Model Magazine

Words and pictures provided by Natalie Cutler

But this alone is not enough; you need to know HOW to photograph. You need to study your angles, best sides and more importantly your worst. There are certain poses I would never do as I know that no amount of photoshopping or airbrushing is going to make me look good in that position. Knowing your weaknesses is one of the biggest strengths you can have as a model. Paying a photographer for your portfolio does not mean you have what it takes. In the real modelling world it is your job to make a clients’ brand look good, and boy will they let you know if you’re not doing your job properly. Trust me when I say that no-one is going to hold your hand. Do not make the mistake of thinking that you are going to be treated like a superstar. As a model you are a product. In reality it’s only those with thick skin that survive this business. It was in August of 2012 last year that fate stepped in and handed me my ‘break’ and I embarked on a year long trip modelling around Asia, after signing with Elite Model Management. It all began when a close friend of mine, Patrick Galang, Fashion Editor at Mega Magazine, called me and asked me to meet him. When I arrived, Patrick explained to me, that

force of nature Shao Trinidad. She agreed to represent me and the rest as they say, is history. Since that fateful meeting, I have had the most amazing year travelling all over the world most recently working in Bangkok. Now being back in London, I feel it’s important to reflect on everything I have learned this year, the good and the bad and try to put it to use within the UK industry. The biggest surprise I’ve faced within the past year, is realising how little the UK is involved with the Asian side of the market. Which is a shame because it’s huge. Everywhere I went I was constantly the only English girl (great for me because I was a novelty) but everywhere I turned there were Russian, Brazilian and American models, whose overseas mother agencies had tapped into the Asian market and were placing girls and guys alike around the country. Smart really, because Asia is very quickly becoming the new ‘Hub’ of the Modelling/Commercial/ Media Industry. Elite Manila is a true credit to this growing reputation. Out of all my experiences all over the world with many different agencies, I can honestly say they stand head and shoulders above the rest in 8

Every Model Magazine

every sense for me. From their work ethic, to the way you’re treated and the actual quality of the work they produce. It is outstanding and the Philippines is definitely the country to watch being perhaps the underdog of the industry but more importantly; hungry for success, and with the talent to back it up. Arriving in the UK two weeks

ago, I have only just begun to find myself settling back into London life. The differences in the industry between the two continents are now more apparent to me than they have ever been. What I find most difficult about the UK market, is how close minded they are about the arts industry in general, and because of this, they seem to lose out on a great

deal of amazing talent. Simply because that person isn’t with the ‘right kind of agent,’ they didn’t train at the ‘right type of school’ or they don’t have a ‘strong book.’ Then there is the very popular old chestnut of ‘You’re just not tall enough’. Which I got told A LOT. Granted, I admit I am only 5’6 but then again so is Kate Moss. However, I have still managed to reach the point where I am good enough to work with Vogue. The UK to me seems like the only country in the industry that pigeon holes you before even meeting you. More fascinating for us models out there, is the fact that in Asia the height rule is a little more relaxed which means girls who have all the potential in the world but can’t get a foot in the UK market because of a height disadvantage, can walk right through the door in Asia. Sure they do still implement the ‘height rule’ where necessary but they are more open to the obvious fact that unless it’s runway work or shooting for jeans you really don’t need to be 6ft to sell Dior’s latest lipstick or Chanel’s newest shades. This is where knowing your market comes in. It is so important to your career to ensure you’re not wasting yours and more importantly, the clients’ time. Know your height

(your real height), your body type and your look. Then decide from there where you as a brand (as that is what you are) fit into the market. From a business point of view Starbucks aren’t suddenly going to start selling mobile phones in their coffee shop, why would they? That’s not their niche and it has nothing to do with coffee. Just like you do not want to be walking into a high fashion agency if you’re 5’6. Fortunately, this is where I think the UK holds an advantage over Asia. In Asia you’re thrown in at the deep end and you need to learn fast or have an amazing agent with the spare time to mentor you. Sadly there are many girls out there who are too young and naive to handle it. In general, mother agencies send their new girls (and guys) to Asia to build their book and experience, so they can come back to their own country with substance. An amazing idea that unfortunately the UK has still not fully tapped into. However, the UK does guide and nourish its girls. You are taught your craft, tutored, so that when you step in front of that camera, you know what you’re doing. Taking your training from the UK to Asia is an amazing advantage and at the end of your trip you come

back with a more independent, experienced view on the industry. With some amazing pictures to match. Over the past year, I have had a lot of girls and guys from the UK contact me about how I got to where I am. How can they do the same? The truth is this; modelling is one of the only industries in the world, where

there is no generic pattern to success. Everyone has their own story. Its about finding what works for you. Sometimes it’s best being a big fish in a small pond, building one brick at a time. It’s not a sprint, more of a marathon which you need to be prepared for. It can take years as mine did. There is no substitute for persistent hard work and you will get out what you put in.

Still the huge gap between the UK and Asian market really fascinates me. There is a bridge still to be built here and after already successfully helping my first model make her transition into the Asian market, I decided to create my own agency based on helping other UK Models work in and around Asia. Everyone has to start somewhere and I would not be where I am today without the continuous help and support I had from my London based make up artist Jutheanne Cruz. Being from Asia she was my bridge, my connection that started it all. Even today she continues to mentor me in a very humble, grounded way and I am forever in her debt. I would now like to become that bridge for other models in the industry, supporting and guiding a new generation into this multi cultural world that we live in. It’s the only way forward which is why there was no doubt in my mind as to what I was going to name my agency. I am delighted to introduce, Excelsior Model Management. Being Latin for ‘ever upward’ it was the obvious choice, as that is exactly where I intend to keep going . . . UP! You can email Natalie at her agency at Excelsiormgt@gmail.com

JESSY

We all hear the horror stories about the pressures of modelling being so intense it forces wannabe models to take drastic measures leading to bodily harm such as eating disorders and unnecessary surgery.

S

adly the dangers some models can impose on themselves are not the only issues. As far as modelling is concerned, research conducted by Enough is Enough Limited, has shown that for every 10 aspiring models that apply to agencies, as many as 7 will end up getting scammed in some way. Scammed in this context means they are financially exploited and drained of their money by the many and growing rogue modelling agencies plying their trade on

12

Every Model Magazine

the online market. Imagine the sheer temptation of your dream being seemingly within touching distance, having no money yet being promised a lucrative modelling job if you merely spend a little bit on updating your portfolio. Put yourself in their shoes, what measures would you go to for your dream? These agencies are professional confidence tricksters and they reel individuals in. The question then arises that how do they manage to find these model scam companies? The Answer, shockingly through high profile search engines such as Google and this is only one of the scammers’ many ways. Being one of the most trusted search engine sites in the world, it’s hard to believe that it is possible for model scam companies to be ranked high in Google searches, as we forget that companies can pay their way up the search. Google offers functionality that enables the advertisers to home in on their core audience, the 16-25 year old

age bracket and allows the advertisers to target potential clients by geographical region and different time spans of the day (e.g. to have ads running between 3pm and 3am, or 6pm and 6am around the clock) Model scam companies use sponsored ads, which is essentially pay-per- click advertising, with Google it comes under the umbrella of Google Adwords. Sponsored links are the paid advertisements located right at the very top and along the right hand side of the search engine results page, under a heading entitled Sponsored Links. Advertisers bid on particular search terms or keywords to increase visibility, so the higher the bid for a particular term, the higher up or more visible the particular ad. Common search phrases used are, for example, models, model, modelling agency and things to that effect. Model scam agencies know that models will not be able to tell the difference between a good modelling agency and a sham so therefore will be able to reel the model in as after all it costs

them nothing to apply. Like the attitude in any job search, why not apply to as many agencies as possible as one is likely to call back? This is just one of the scammers many ways. You may then wonder why you don’t read or hear such scam stories in the news. Model scam victims’ tales won’t make the front cover or, a small feature in the middle of a glossy magazine. Why? They are scared of being ridiculed and laughed at as these scam companies are currently not breaking any law. Many of these model scam companies have knowledge of their legal rights and they arrange their affairs in such a way as to avoid directly breaking the law during their activities. This not only discourages victims from speaking up, for the belief that what they have suffered was not wrong, but also means that perpetrators can go on, devastating the lives of men and women across the globe, and asking them to pay for the privilege; but this does not mean that they are not guilty of the shameless exploitation of some of the most vulnerable people in our society. Enough is Enough Limited, have recognised that there is little Government protection and hardly any exposure on models being scammed. This has forced them to introduce Modelscams.org, an independent organisation with a desire to expose the heartless scammers exploiting

vulnerable wannabe models both financially and psychologically. On the founding board, sits Jay Mitchell (not his or her real name) – who was once the manager of a large and successful rogue modelling agency operating within the UK. Jay has chosen to remain anonymous as the safety of his/her family is of concern. Once the enemy of aspiring models worldwide, Jay now contributes heavily to the efforts of Modelscams.org to bring about considered

necessary changes in the modelling industry. From working with high profile modelling agencies, Jay has the knowledge and expertise to go head to head with some of the worst offenders within this scamming culture. Their remorse at the devastation which they had witnessed has propelled them into action; they had received many devastated phone calls, seen many victims desperate for answers and too many people suffering from serious anxiety, depression and stress

Every Model Magazine

13

related illnesses due to having been scammed. There have even been some rare cases of attempted suicide related to being tricked by fake model agencies…it’s easy to see how a young, impressionable and insecure person could be badly affected by falling into the hands of these people. They have seen the glint of success only to have it cruelly snatched away and not everyone is strong enough to cope with that. Falling victim to confidence tricksters is a traumatic event and the sheer numbers involved in swindles like this were too grave for the people behind Modelscams. org to ignore any longer. In seeking to reveal rogue agencies tactics to clean up the world of modelling by exposing those who leech from would-be models, lie to them and coerce them into paying money for things which they don’t need, Jay Mitchell has released a book, Introducing The Great Modelling Robbery. This book shows that it takes as little as 24 hours to set up a fake agency and how they manage to scam thousands of pounds from aspiring models. It includes explosive and shocking insights into the world of modelling scams and both are the result of in-depth insider

knowledge and includes what the modelling scammers really think of their victims: “In a wannabe model world where money and stupidity are in abundance but common sense not, it’d be a crime not to scam as many people as possible wouldn’t it?” Rogue model agency owner “At the time, I didn’t give two hoots about all this politically correct nonsense. The vast majority of the consuming public are as thick as two short planks but one thing these planks have in common with the smarter members of society is that they have money and they are begging for their money to be taken from them. Consequently, I was more than obliged to do so by the bucket load because if it wasn’t going to be me, it’d be someone else” Quote from a director of a leading modelling portfolio company. The Great Modelling Robbery,

discloses every stage of the bogus set up process from start to finish, including how they choose an enticing agency name and fake prestigious addresses to give the aura of credibility and legitimacy and lure unsuspecting wannabe models in. It reveals how sham agencies team up with studios with the aim of scamming as much money as possible. After reading this book, the next time an agency calls you to sign up for modelling, you will have an idea as to what to look out for. If you are a model scam victim, or an aspiring model needing guidance to further youre career, please visit www.modelscams.org for further information. The Great Modelling Robbery : £6.99 for paper back and the Audio book and Ebook are both £5.99. Shattered Dreams and Broken Promises: Modelling Scams Exposed: £8.99.

nternational male SUPERmodel, David Gandy, has invested in Wheyhey Ice Cream, the new low fat, no sugar and protein enriched ice cream that is taking the healthy snack industry by storm. Wheyhey launched at the beginning of January 2013 and has attracted the attention of celebrities such as David Gandy and Harry Styles, health enthusiasts and sports stars, including David Haye and the Six Nations rugby teams. David Gandy, male supermodel and voted one of London’s most influential people, loves the product so much that he is now a brand ambassador and investor in the company. Wheyhey protein ice cream is made from the highestquality whey protein isolate, is low in fat, contains no sugar as it has its own natural sweetener and is gluten free. Additionally, each 150ml tub contains just 165 calories. Gandy said, “When I first heard of Wheyhey, the idea of a sugar free, high protein ice cream obviously caught my attention, but as a very health conscious person, sounded almost too good to be true. After tasting all the flavours and asking a lot of questions about the product, I was hooked.” He added, “The health food market is booming at the moment and this is something I pay a lot of

attention to. I’m constantly asked about what I eat and I have written and talked (at Vogue Festival and Oxford University) about body image and the importance of nutrition. Wheyhey is a revolutionary product and of course it’s British. I’m really excited to be joining the Wheyhey team and know that the next year is going to be a really exciting time for the brand.” Currently available in Holland and Barrett, Wholefoods and is imminently to launch into Ocado’s listing, Wheyhey and David Gandy have stormed into the public eye and are a match made in heaven. * Wheyhey is naturally sweetened with xylitol, which is a

our portfolio images should be kept in a plain, preferably padded, black A4 book and always taken with you to castings. With technology as it is and the requirement for images to be sent to clients via email EM have come up with a brand new way of filing your images for easy transfer. In additional to your book, save your images in two files on a memory stick such as the EM Magazine 4GB credit style USB. Save your images in two folders, one including all of them at high res and the other at low res. Keep a memory card in your book at all times and when an agent or client asks you for your images you can provide them there and then in both formats they will need.

If you have specific copyright restrictions in respect of your images, include these within another folder on the memory card marked ‘Usage and copyright instructions’ and file as a text document. If you would like your very own EM Magazine USB credit card we are offering them to our readers for the nominal cost of £4.99. Please email us to order your ‘mobile model book’ now at info@emmagazine.co.uk. A typical memory stick such as this one would usually cost in the region of £10 from most retail outlets. A snazzy EM Magazine one which neatly slots inside your model book without causing any disruption to your images, looks professional and sends out a message of organisation and proactivity to your future clients and bookings. his column hits things from a different angle. It’s the part I forgot to mention- the boring part- the interval between making your dreams happen and them actually happening. From that hot relaxing bubble bath to hoping you will win the Euromillions, consciously or subconsciously, we’re all dreaming of something fabulous. In a modern British society it’s human nature to want more, more, more but at what point do we throw the towel in and be a defeatist? Amongst many reasons for why I absolutely love being married to my husband, one has to be because I no longer have to worry about settling down. I am so heavily occupied in my life that the thought of having to rustle up the energy to date would just be my idea of hell. However, I always feel so sad for people who just settle, whether that is in love or for anything less in life than what they deserve. I often say to my single friends, never to settle for anything less than butterflies

because in my opinion, love is the ultimate blessing, it makes the world go around and should complete you wholly. So, if you’re someone looking for love, stop looking and concentrate first on finding you. I mean this in the least ‘Oprah Winfrey’ way possible, but by preparing yourself mentally for love and feeling content with yourself, once loves arrives it will work out just as you intended it to because you will have a sense of selfworth so strong that no-one will dare treat you in any other way than what you deserve. I guess the wait that runs commonly amongst us is the time we put into our careers before we genuinely feel like we have made it. Until we can comfortably sit back on top of an empire and not have to worry anymore about money or status because it’s so established, it’s unbreakable. The truth is, will that day ever come? After all, even the most well known celebrities or designers are only as great as their latest song, film or bag, and I don’t know about you, but so many times I look at some of the wealthiest of people and wonder why they even bother to get off their yachts? But that’s the cycle I was talking aboutthe wanting more, the waiting game. The truth is, no matter how wealthy we are or how rich our lives may seem, we live in a world filled with so much opportunity that it appears our need will only ever grow. But the thing we must always do is Every Model Magazine

remember to channel that need into perfecting life’s natural blessings - the things that money cannot buy because they are not things at all. Love, health, family and friends. Bearing this all in mind, sometimes it’s not always easy with everything we do have going on in our lives to take a step back and relax, feel your inner peace, feel blessed, and actually appreciate what you have around you. Being a Duracell Bunny constantly here, there and everywhere, I am totally guilty of this but just recently on a photoshoot with Samantha Womack and Alan Strutt for Hello! Magazine at Jason Vale’s, Juicy Oasis in Portugal I discovered a feeling of serenity so beautiful that it took my breath away. My columnist picture I have chosen to use this month was taken there and though it’s not by any means my most glamorous of pictures, when I look at it I remember

the sound of nothing but birds and trees, and the feeling of 49 degrees against my skin. In short, I felt a good vibe. For once in a long time I took a moment to appreciate not just what I have, but what we have as a whole. Nature, our health, life’s natural blessings and hopefully the behind-the-scenes video I shot of the photoshoot does justice for what can only be described as heaven. If nothing else, meeting Jason was something very inspiring. The fellow South-East Londoner, told me how he had begun trying to pitch his raw juice diet to locals at food markets and now, years later, he is an iconic figure in the health and fitness industry. So maybe there I’ve answered my own question. Jason waited for years, didn’t throw the towel in and now owns The Juicy Oasis. The place where I found my serenity, I’d better keep waiting then.

both seemed overwhelmed and emotional on this very special occasion. I felt like they genuinely appreciated the support welcomed by everyone outside. All I seemed to think during the build up of the wait was that Kate really is a unique and level headed person to deal with this amount of media attention and pressure. It is not every day you have hundreds of on-lookers waiting outside the door when you have just given birth to your first child. Knowing the moment you step outside that the image will go down in history. To present her new son to the world, the former Kate Middleton wore a tailor made cornflower blue crêpe de chine dress by one of her favourite British designers, Jenny Packman. The picture perfect Princess looked radiant as ever, even just after giving birth. As usual the world wanted to copy Kate’s quintessentially British style. Within one hour Packman’s website crashed under the demand for the polka-dot dress but shoppers

This summer saw the biggest breaking headline of the year so far. At 4:24pm on Monday 22nd July 2013, Prince George Alexander Louis Cambridge, the future King VII of England was born.

was lucky enough to experience the world media and Twitter explosion that was #Royalbaby mania. Never has a door been watched so intently by so many, for so long. Being part of the hundreds of press, fans and television teams we all watched with eager anticipation the oh-so familiar door of the Lindo Wing at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington. After an interesting eleven hour wait, packed with broadcasts, photographs, high security, crazed fans and telephone calls, at 7:20pm on Tuesday 23rd July, William and Kate introduced the most famous baby on the planet to the world. I will never forget the most memorable moment captured by hundreds of press as the Royal couple emerged. I had a great view being directly opposite the door itself. Never have I seen a couple look so calm and at ease with each other and within everyone’s presence. Of course they

were disappointed to learn it was a one-off design that would not be reproduced “for public consumption” (reported the London Evening Standard). So shoppers went elsewhere in search of the polka-dot garment, it shot up in Internet search engines and every high street shop. A lot of sources suggest that this was definitely in honour of Princess Diana, who wore a flowing green polka-dot dress in 1982 when Prince William made his first appearance to the world on the very same street outside St Mary’s hospital. There is no doubt that the Royal couple will influence fashion worldwide. Sources also say Kate is very aware of this. So she chooses her ensembles very carefully keeping in mind the messages she sends especially to young girls, who look up to the perfect Princess, she is indeed a role model. I wonder what is next for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge? They have reconnected the Royal Family with the British public and pulled them into the new modern era of the 21st Century. I think they deserve great applause. Congratulations Will and Kate!

things NOT to do when...

On a shoot

1

Do not leave your eyebrows to be plucked by

you a rings ten b M e E on th twist ips guide top t g you the in bring to Dos. NOT

photoshop. There is nothing more irritating for a

photographer to have to sit for unnecessary periods of time removing the tiny little hairs and bumps you the model should have done before your shoot with them. SORT YOUR EYEBROWS OUT!

2

Do not arrive at any shoot (unless instructed) with a scrap of makeup or hair product already

applied. This wastes a huge amount of time in the preparation stage. A makeup artist and hair stylist is employed to apply and create a desired look, not spend the first half an hour removing one you created for no reason.

3

Attention to detail. Always make sure you have plain finger and toe nails. A photographer does

not wish to remove it for you later when a quick wipe would have done the trick beforehand. Also colours you have chosen to wear on your pinkies may not only be completely inappropriate for your shoot but can be a huge distraction, which again can waste time.

26

Every Model Magazine

© Matusciac Alexandru / shutterstcok

4

Do not wear jewellery, watches, earrings or piercings anywhere unless instructed

beforehand. Another time wasting scenario. Often a shoot team may have taken a number of shots before they notice your ‘discrete’ stud earrings. And yes it might only take a second to remove them in post production, but at the expense of annoying a photographer and team who would have worked with you again had you done it yourself? Think.

5

Underwear. Always take a selection with you to any shoot. White, black and nude should cover

all angles. If you show up in a sexy black bra and you are given a white chiffon dress to model... you get the picture?

6

Do not offer advice to a shoot team unless asked for your opinion. As much as you may feel you

are the centre of the process, you are one part of a complex production. Unless this is a personal portfolio for yourself, you are modelling for someone else, and what you like and don’t doesn’t come into it.

7

Don’t bring an entourage of people with you to a shoot. Even if you are a high end model and

may bring your own team with you, make sure you leave it at the minimum needed. Too many cooks, etc. A creative team work far better with fewer people around them. They don’t want the world and his dog seeing their pictures before they have even finished.

8

Never change your appearance without consulting your agent first. This should be in

your modelling contract anyway. If a client books you as a brunette and you arrive on set as a blonde, you will have wasted a huge amount of people’s time and money. You may also find yourself dropped by your agent as a result of breaching your contract. Your job is your look. You have chosen this career and as with any other, there are restrictions, compromises and considerations.

9

Never party the night before a job. Dark circles, dehydrated skin and nauseous models are not

a big plus.

10

Never take photographs on your phone of the shoot and instagram, facebook or twitter

unpublishable. Any seen in the public domain prior to official release may be withdrawn by the publisher or client. The whole essence shooting specifically for a client is the exclusivity. You can remove that with a couple of clicks of your phone. This is probably the biggest ‘No No’ there is. Leave your phone switched off and in a secure place until your work is done.

Hydrated skin = Win! Well-hydrated skin is important to strive for as it means, less fine lines, better elasticity, all-round younger looking skin. Who wouldn’t want that? Especially a model. Having well-cared for skin is an essential start to a great make up session. As an MUA I need to ensure that my models’ skin has been moisturised prior to applying make up. A model that takes skin care into their own hands will get rewarded as time goes by with a healthy complexion and youthful looking skin. How old were you and when did you first consider modelling to be a career for you? I think I was about fourteen years old, I was asked by my hairdresser in Norfolk to do a photoshoot for them and it went on from there I guess. Then at sixteen my hairdresser took me to the Birmingham Clothes Show to see if I would get scouted, and I did! By Select in London. Are you currently signed to an agency and if so who is it? I’ve just recently signed with Elite, which is my ultimate 44

dream. They’re amazing, I’m so happy with them. What kind of modelling work do you enjoy the most? I actually really enjoy shows, I love walking down a catwalk but I’m not really a fashion week kind of girl because of my height. Is there any type of work you would love to do but haven’t been given the opportunity yet? Obviously as a model, you hope and pray for a big campaign. I haven’t been with Elite for very long so I’m still hoping there’s time!

If you could go back in time and be anyone you wanted who would it be? Audrey Hepburn What advice can you offer aspiring models? First and foremost, don’t take anything anyone says to heart. It’s like any other job, where there’s an interview/ audition process and sometimes you get turned down. Be natural and keep trying. I love this saying; “Different flowers look good to different people.”

What are your imminent plans modelling wise? At the moment I am rebuilding my portfolio, we’ve scrapped my commercial images and are going for a more editorial look. So I’m testing and casting again. It’s exciting, I love that I’m starting from fresh. Who inspires you? Honestly, my mum. She’s the hardest working woman I have ever met and the most incredible mother and wife. I think I have her work ethic in that I will happily work long hours at various jobs etc to get the bills paid - this is London after all! I want to be like her in both her work and family life. What annoys you? Ignorant and argumentative people. What is your favourite piece of clothing? I love my jackets. Smart light jackets make any of my outfits look classy. Well I think so. What is your beauty essential? Bobbi Brown face oil, I have such dry skin so it’s perfect for me. Also my Chanel Vitalumiere foundation is amazing. Is there any kind of work within the industry you definitely wouldn’t do? Glamour modelling, purely because I don’t feel comfortable trying to be sexy, and secondly because I have no bust!

England 2009. Seeing all of the other girls taking part it was hard to put the winner in the frame, nobody knew who it would be. Everyone was deserving of the title hence why they were there in the first place. All of us took to the catwalk and battled it out giving the judges a hard decision. After such a long and eventful day, it was time to announce the winner. As all of us were waiting nervously back stage, I was sitting with my shoes off as I really didn’t expect to win. Kat called the 3rd runner up and then second so I thought I hadn’t been placed at that point... “And the winner of Miss Every Model 2013 is” ... and then announced it was me! I was just so shocked and couldn’t believe I had won. I walked out onto the catwalk and straight away I saw how proud my parents were of me. My dad was in tears and the smile on my moms face was huge! The photographers were taking so many pictures and I was concentrating on trying to hold back the tears so that I didn’t ruin the images. It really is an overwhelming experience. Following on from the night of winning, one of my prizes was to have a shoot with the fabulous Alan Strutt. I travelled down to London to have the shoot and it was my first ever experience of anything like this and I loved every second of it. Fay and Alan made me feel really comfortable and it all felt so natural to be in front of the camera. This experience is where I made my decision to pursue a career in modelling. The pictures were

that weekend as well. One of my other prizes was to have a bespoke dress hand made by the lovely Karen Karmody who is based in London. I travelled down there from West Bromwich where she measured me up for the gorgeous design we decided on together. We went for a full black sequin material with a little fish tail and a split up the left leg. When I finally got into the dress at the finals I felt great and I would like to thank Karen again for such a beautiful gown. Thank you. Getting to the finals was such an achievement and I still couldn’t really believe it when I was there, it was all so surreal! We started with rehearsals where we practiced gracing the catwalk with our allocated partners. I

gorgeous and I couldn’t believe they were me. Thanks so much Fay and Alan! After the shoot I used one of my bikini shots to enter the beach beauty round for Miss England and I was selected as one of the lucky finalists. For this I went to Torquay for a few days along with the other eleven selected finalists. We were lucky enough to take part in a shoot on the beach. There were loads of press from local and national newspapers and it was crazy! My first experience of the paparazzi! All the other girls were so friendly and we had an amazing time together, running in the sea and along the beach as well as individually having the chance to show the camera what us girls were made of. We were blessed with fantastic weather

was with the outstanding beauty Charlotte Hodson. We really worked it together and I definitely made a friend for life there. We even had to learn a dance for the opening of the show which was fab! I think it gave everyone the chance to have some fun. So the night of the finals arrived and I was number 8 in the line up. The first time I walked out I could hear the support I had from my family, it made me feel great and a lot more confident. After such a long night the final 15 were announced and I was placed, following on from that I made the final 5 and that’s where I Every Model Magazine

finished. I was emotionally happy and couldn’t believe I had made it that far. I was so grateful and I consider it to be the best experience ever. After the finals were over I had more few exciting things to do as Miss Every Model Magazine. I went for a relaxed Spa break thanks to Barnham Broom with Ruth. We stayed overnight in the hotel and had a lovely pedicure in the Spa. Dare I admit that this was the first time I’d had one and as a result I will be having them regularly now. They are so relaxing. Ruth and I had an amazing meal in the Brasserie with outstanding food and lots of atmospheric giggles and smiles. We were made to feel very welcome by Barnham Broom and I hope very much to go back there again soon. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank The Real Effect for my beautiful winners pendant, Olivia Weddings for my silk flowered and jewelled bouquet and Wizard Publicity for the fab goody bag bursting with beauty must have products

Ditch Your Baggage! Eye Bag Removal The Simple Way No wonder we’ve got hollow, tired eyes. Late nights, long commutes to work, the sinking economy – we’re shattered! Stephen Handisides

T

he sensitive skin around the eyes can be the first to display the signs of tiredness and stress – yet can be the most difficult for even the most experienced make-up artist to cover. So how can you hide the problem? For the busy model dashing from one shoot to the next, commuting around hot, dusty cities and trying to stay cool and unflustered the last thing you want to worry about is those ‘sacks of coal’ under your eyes. You could try an effective, pharmaceutical grade eye cream, such as the Brightening

54

Every Model Magazine

Bionic Eye Cream Plus from Exuviance. Its powerful antioxidant formulation will visibly reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and target dark circles and puffiness in the eye area. After four weeks of twice daily use, clinical studies showed that 88% of users saw a reduction in puffiness and fine lines and 62% saw an improvement in under eye dark circles. Personally I use NeoStrata’s Bionic Eye Cream. Gluconolactone, Lactobionic Acid, and Pro-Vitamin A visibly fight fine lines and wrinkles while Vitamin K, Green Tea Extract, and Cucumber Extract to target dark circles and puffiness. After four weeks 90% of users recorded an improvement in puffiness. Both products come in around the same price point (£30) but ensure none of the ingredients will irritate your skin type. Of course, eye creams are only a temporary solution.

If you’re looking for a cosmetic surgery solution to counteract droopy eyes and remove unsightly bags then this type of surgery is called blepharoplasty. Plastic surgery is a little scary and not everyone is that brave; as a model I also avoid making drastic permanent alterations! That’s why I think the ‘tear trough’ treatment is one of the most exciting recent advances in aesthetic medicine. By using dermal filler this procedure can improve tired eyes, baggy

eyes and dark circles under the eyes. Top facial aesthetics expert, Fab Equizi, performs the procedure at his Liverpool clinic. He says that patients who might previously have had to consider a surgical operation for mild lower eye bags, can now ditch the knife and enjoy excellent results simply with the injection of filler. “Tear troughs are depressions which run from the nose and all around under the eye. These depressions get worse as we age, as a result of the sagging skin and facial fat underneath, leaving this depression,” he said. “As the face ages this gives the appearance of lower eye bags and dark circles. Until quite recently, it was thought that only surgery could improve the eye bags, and there were no effective treatments for the annoying dark circles under the eyes. “I inject dermal filler into this depression through a very fine needle. The filler is then moulded through careful massage and the results are incredible and instantaneous.” Even more incredible, the procedure only takes 30 minutes – that makes it a true ‘lunchtime procedure’. The results will last around 9-12 months, but with a few top ups, the results can be very long lasting. There’ll be no more crying yourself to sleep once you’ve got those tear troughs under control.

my thoughts and go for a quick run to mentally organize my day and physically burn all the brie and ice cream I’ve probably had in abnormal quantities the day before. I’m just a mess when it comes to food. Then I shower, write and answer emails, indulge in one of two New York Magazine articles, throw on a robe and get to a shoot or meetings. I often end up my days writing at some bar in the city by myself. Late at night, I sometimes go on long skate rides to float in the wind and listen to soulful jams. IL You mentioned in your interests that you like modelling. Have you ever done anything in particular that you are very proud to talk about? Personally, I think the photographs on ‘She Walks on Pearls’ are a very clear example of your modelling ability. Is that just an interest on the side of all the others or a more official interest? CB Modelling takes a significant place in my whole body of work because I love it so much. Working with photographers like Mikel Helou and Tracy Allen Bailey (LVRS Tracy) made me understand that art is limitless. One piece of work I’m so proud of is the editorial shoot I did for 424 on Fairfax, the one with the gold KG & Co jewellery and that gorgeous gold Balmain dress. Does fantasy overtake the way you write? CB Teenage stories, summer loves, California. Movie sets, the ocean, relationships. I write a lot of real-life based short stories, sometimes with tiny drawings like I used to do in high-school and get paid $5 a page by kids for. I also wander in my inner dark places and write sad songs and melodies. I have a bigger project in mind, but it’s a process. I need to live more before it’s finished. IL Do people regularly contact you with admiration for your website and yourself? Have you been offered any jobs or propositions for collaborations? CB I’ve seen my photos liked and reposted hundreds of thousands of times, literally. Internet fame is what got me to do what I’m doing today. Kaffeine

I have to admit I am a coffee addict so I was pleased to stumble across this gem of a coffee shop in the heart of London. Kaffeine is an Australian/New Zealand independently owned coffee shop based at 66 Great Titchfield Street. The staff are warm and friendly and make a big effort to make you feel welcome. Kaffeine have many tasty treats to sample including Portuguese custard tarts, white chocolate blondies and a seasonal menu. They have a wide range of coffees and make your drink to how you like. Inside the vibe is relaxed with wooden benches and music. A great place to stop for the coffee lover.

Le Pain Quotidien

Once again I ventured to Soho on my quest for the meanest biggest breakfast and came across The Diner. I ordered a strawberry milkshake which came in the largest bucket I’ve ever seen, blueberry pancake stack and vegetarian breakfast. In my opinion this has been the best breakfast I’ve had in London. The eggs were perfect! The vegetarian sausage tasted excellent even to a meat eater like myself... Thumbs up especially for vegetarians looking for a hearty start to the day.

One of my favourite hang outs is Le Pain Quotidien, all of their produce is organic. They have the freshest foods which range from roasted vegetables and goats cheese to a detox salad. They have the scrummiest berry tarts and all of their bread is baked fresh.
