Halifax

Halifax is on Mi’kmaw territory. The people of the Mi’kmaw Nation have lived on this territory for millennia. Their culture and presence have nurtured and continue to nurture this place. The partners behind Every One Every Day Kjipuktuk honour our ancestors, the peoples, and the land of the Mi’kmaw Nation.

Why we do this

In acknowledging the traditional territories of First Peoples, you are inviting those who are gathered with you to build awareness of Indigenous presence and land rights in everyday life, and to deepen their knowledge of the land’s richness and significance to all living things. Land acknowledgments are a sign of respect and a means to begin your journey towards a more reconciled future. Learn more about this here: native-land.ca/resources/territoryacknowledgment

Take part in creating your own land acknowledgment! Be sure to check out one of two sessions in our Fall Program on Acknowledging Traditional Territories, where you will learn about the importance of acknowledging the land we are on and create your own sincere land acknowledgment that you can use in your every day!

Fall 2022 Program · October 21 – November 26

Halifax’s North End is a special place, and home to many people with different languages, cultures, skills and hobbies.

Together we want to create even more ways for people to get together and share these wonderful things. Can you imagine a place where people can get together to cook, play, share, learn, bake, make and chat? We’re going to make it happen, but we need you!

Every One Every Day is working with local residents and organizations to create opportunities for neighbors to connect and learn over shared interests, and where everybody from across the local area can get to know each other. Central to these interactions is respectful learning and sharing across the histories and cultures that make up the places we call home.

Mark your calendars! The Fall Program is coming up and it’s going to be full of hands-on activities run by other people that live in the area, and they want you to join in! Whether it’s learning to use new tools to build and fix things, preparing a delicious Caribbean meal, learning the art of henna, or working on DIY projects for your home, there’s something for everyone!

The Program starts on Friday October 21st where you can join us at the Gottingen St. Neighbourhood Shop for an afternoon of hands-on making and cultural sharing in celebration of Mi’kmaq History Month. Come on your own, or bring friends and family to join in the fun!

WHAT EVERY ONE EVERY DAY IS ALL ABOUT!

We have a Neighbourhood Shop on Gottingen Street that is here to help neighbours connect over shared interests and work together on mutually benefical projects.

People pop in to have a cup of coffee (or tea!) and share their idea for a project, working with the design team to bring their ideas to life in the neighbourhood.

Since June 2022, the project has been working to grow a large enthusiastic network of people who are doing practical things together to make everyday life better for everyone.

So far a range of projects have been initiated with a growing number of people participating, with as much or as little support as needed, included cooking, sewing, building, making, and much more.

Many small things done by many people really add up, and really do make friendly, healthy, and happy neighbourhoods.

Lots of wonderful things are being achieved by local people, friends, family and neighbours. What ways of bringing people together can you imagine in the North End? Come along and let’s see what we can make happen together!

October is a Time to Celebrate Mi’kmaq Abundance!

Mi’kmaq History Month and Treaty Day Celebrations

The Mi’kmaq have recognized and honoured abundance since time immemorial; abundance in connections with others and the natural world, abundance of the gifts of Wskitqamu “Mother Earth”, and abundance in the richness of Mi’kmaw culture, tradition, and experience. October, Mi’kmaq History Month, showcases Mi’kmaq history and celebrates the succession of Mi’kmaw culture despite years of oppression and discrimination. It also recognizes and honours the many achievements of L’nuk (the term the Mi’kmaq use for themselves) from across Mi’kma’ki, past and present.

The Mi’kmaw word for the month, or moon, of October is Wikewiku’s, “animal fattening time”. It is a time for hunting and preserving, in preparation for the colder months ahead. The Mi’kmaq have traditionally used the moon as a measurement of time passing, providing a 13-month annual calendar, representing the 13 times the moon travels around the earth in a year. The names given to each month, or moon, are based on whatever is happening in the surrounding natural environment at that time.

1986

Grand Chief Donald Marshall Sr. proclaimed every October 1st as Treaty Day. Treaty Day commemorates the key role of treaties in Mi’kmaq–Crown relations and recognizes Mi’kmaq presence and habitation on these lands for more than 13,000 years.

October 1 is Treaty Day in Nova Scotia, and marks the beginning of Mi’kmaq History Month celebrations all over the province. Treaty Day recognizes the Peace and Friendship Treaties between the Mi’kmaq and the British Crown, which were first signed in 1752, and reminds us of our commitment to one another, as kin, and as treaty people.

Each year, the Mi’kmaq History Month Committee selects a theme for the production of a poster that will be used as a resource for teaching, and highlighting Mi’kmaq history and culture. The theme for Mi’kmaq History Month 2022 is “Mi’kmaw Beadwork and the Art of Beading”. Our very own Neighbourhood Project Designer, Killa Atencio, is a beadwork artist!

The poster, designed and created by Mi’kmaw artist(s), is revealed during Treaty Day celebrations. To learn more about Treaty Day and Mi’kmaq History Month or to download a copy of this year’s poster, visit www.mikmaqhistorymonth.ca.

1993

Premier John Savage and Mi’kmaw Grand Chief Ben Sylliboy declared October as Mi’kmaq History Month to recognize and celebrate Mi’kmaw culture and traditions past, present, and future.

During the New Moon of October, we experience the world’s highest tides!

Be sure to check out this year’s New Moon of October, on October 25, 2022 7:48am. For other moon phases and dates, visit www.bit.ly/moons2022

Abundance

Discover, Share and Celebrate

Abundance can mean different things for each of us, especially when thinking of the important people, places, and activities in our lives. Consider the many gifts and talents of people you know, the stories and teachings we share with one another, the places and things that bring joy or comfort in our daily lives, and the wonderful gifts of nature that surround us. The Every One Every Day Fall Program is an invitation for us all to explore the different forms of abundance that are present within us, and around us. Let’s discover, share, and celebrate abundance together.

Discover

Do you enjoy painting or other forms of expression? Do you know how to grow a garden or make pickles and preserves? What about creating poetry or doing interior design? Whether it’s something you already know how to do or something you wish to know more about, the Gottingen St. Neighborhood Shop is a place to discover fun and practical activities that help to spark joy and creativity around all the things we can do more of together. Most of all, it’s a place for us to learn from one another, and discover abundance in all its forms. Stop by for a chat and see what you can discover!

Share

The North End is home to many different people who have wonderful skills, talents, and hobbies that can bring us together to share and learn from one another. Whether it’s a special skill like painting or woodworking, or something you do every day like cooking or mending, each one of us has gifts to share and things we can learn from the people around us. The Every One Every Day team is here to help you explore the unique gifts and talents of your neighbours and find more ways to work together on fun and useful projects that help to fuel our shared sense of abundance. Do you have a skill to share or a project you’d like to work on with others? Let’s make it happen together!

Celebrate

As the days shorten and the moon gets a little brighter, we pay attention to the changing seasons and how these shifts can affect our everyday lives. As the cooler days of fall set in, it can be a time to think about mother nature and all her gifts such as the smells and colours of the outdoors, the time to harvest seeds that have been sown, and a time to gather and prepare for shorter and darker days. It can also be a time to come together and celebrate the many forms of abundance that are around us. Take a look through the Fall Program to find lots of fun ways to get together, be creative, and celebrate our abundance.

Netukulimk

In the Mi’kmaw culture there is a value at the centre of everything we do: netukulimk (pronounced neh-DU-guh-limk). Its teachings — that the human and natural worlds are not separate from each other — are sewn into the fabric of Mi’kmaw identity, celebrated and acknowledged as a guiding principle in how we work, and how we interact with community and the land every day.

Netukulimk means to have enough, but not more than enough. It teaches us to use natural bounty for ourselves and community sustenance, without wasting and jeopardizing it for the future.

The Mi’kmaq have recognized and practiced this concept for centuries and it has been the foundation for sustaining Mi’kmaq families, communities and society since time immemorial. One of the key practices of Netukulimk is understanding your impact on the natural world, and its life forms, and the future generations which guides us in a way to live and act responsibly in all aspects of our life. Some ways that we are practicing Netukulimk in the Gottingen St. Neighbourhood Shop are reducing use of single-

use plastic and disposable water bottles, putting processes in place to use less paper, and making sure to recycle, upcycle, and compost when possible. We invite you to think about how you can practice Netukulimk at home, and in your community.

How We Work

Open to everyone

When we say everyone, we mean everyone. We all come with unique stories, experiences, gifts and talents. Every One Every Day is an open invitation to connect and learn from one another across shared interests. Can’t find something that interests you? Not sure where to start? Our team is here to support you in taking part and connecting with your neighbours.

Beginner to expert

This isn’t about being skilled or an expert in something. It’s about learning and spending time with others, and having support to bring your ideas to life in the neighbourhood. Whatever you enjoy doing or think you might like to try could be something that others are interested in too—we’re here to make it easier to start and grow your ideas.

Easy to take part

Most people have busy lives. Between work, raising children, caring for older relatives and keeping households going, people need participation opportunities that fit with all the other things going on. These activities will be near where you live, they will be short and at different times of day, and free to attend.

Everyone is valued and able to contribute

The whole neighbourhood matters. Getting involved in Every One Every Day means creating space for everyone to have a say in picking projects, planning, and taking part. The projects outlined in this newspaper are designed to spark ideas around what we could do more of together. Anyone can contribute, including children of all ages—we call them mini-makers.

Projects that benefit the whole community

Every One Every Day is not a volunteering program. We work with residents to help create projects that directly benefit you, your neighbours, friends and family. These benefits might include learning new things, saving you money or time, sharing and trading resources, or making new friends and creating a greater sense of community.

Practical ways of making new connections

These projects see people working together on practical ideas that make their neighbourhoods more exciting and enjoyable places to live. By taking part in these projects people become creators and co-producers of the places in which they live. Over time, we can create networks of people and projects that make everyday life better for everyone.

Meaningful ways to learn about Truth and Reconciliation

We all have a responsibility to learn the truth about Canada’s history, particularly the nation’s relationship with the First Peoples of this land. Every One Every Day strives to create space for important conversations about the truth in our history and how sharing that knowledge contributes towards a more reconciled and socially-just future.

Gottingen St. Neighbourhood Shop

The Gottingen St. Neighbourhood Shop is located at 2169 Gottingen Street and is open to the public during set hours on weekdays and weekends.

The Neighbourhood Shop is a creative hub where local residents are invited to meet and connect with one another, take part in fun and practical activities led by other residents, and work together to plan and grow all sorts of neighbourhood projects. There is nothing for sale in the shop and it is not run for the purpose of generating profit.

When you come to the shop, you’ll find a range of equipment and supplies, a welcoming team to introduce you to the space, inspirational project ideas, and open invitations to lead and take part in things that interest you. Whether it’s a focus on

greening projects, collective cooking, fixing & repairing, fashion and fabrics, or anything else, it’s a space for neighbours to meet and do things with people who live nearby.

A team of Project Designers will always be around to offer support to help start and grow project ideas that benefit you and the neighbourhood. If we don’t have the knowledge and skills needed to support, we’ll help to find other local residents who can help us to get going!

Over time we hope to develop more of these spaces, and that they become familiar gathering and co-creation spaces that help to show what public spaces can be when they are designed around people and their natural gifts and creativity.

Here’s a glimpse of what you can find in the Gottingen St. Neighbourhood Shop:

• Puzzles and board games

• Plants, pots, soil, trowels, gloves

• Fully stocked kitchenette

• Desktop computers

• Outdoor games and toys

• Toys and children’s books

• Play kitchen

• Sewing machines, fabric, thread

• Embroidery floss

• Art and craft supplies

• Knitting and crochet supplies

• Woodworking tools

• Cosy space with books

• Recyclable materials

Every One Every Day Community Build Trailer

Have a project idea for the neighbourhood that we could build together? Have something at home that you need fixed? Maybe you’d like to work with others to add public seating on a nearby street, or like the idea of building planters and flower boxes that can live in different spots around the neighbourhood!

Over the past few months, Every One Every Day has teamed up with OSO planning + design (www.osoplan.com) to work with local residents on the design and build of a Community Build Trailer as a way to bring tools, and inspiration for people to work together to shape different spaces in their own neighbourhoods. Whatever your idea, the trailer will be equipped to build just about anything that residents can dream up for Halifax’s North End and beyond. During the Fall Program, there will be many opportunities to contribute ideas that can build on the look and feel of the Community Build Trailer—including what’s in there and how it might be put to use.

Take a look through the Fall Program calendar to find out when these sessions will take place. Whether it’s learning a new thing about design, brainstorming ideas for new build projects, sharing and learning skills , or building something useful and creative for the neighbourhood—there will be something for everyone! Come along and bring your ideas, or even a DIY project you’d like support with—everyone is welcome to take part and help bring the Community Build Trailer to life!

Wije’winen Come With Us

The Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre has a bold vision for a new Friendship Centre.

This new facility, called the Wije’winen Centre, will be brought to life in the coming years as the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre (MNFC) breaks ground next to the historic site of Citadel Hill—a site marking the beginning of colonization by the British on lands stewarded by the Mi’kmaq.

To coincide with plans to relocate to a new home, and to better reflect the journey that the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre wishes to take with the entire community, MNFC introduced a campaign: Wije’winen, meaning Come With Us. Advanced by Elders, this term expresses a sense of moving forward together that has and will continue to be carried through the design and build of the new building.

Once completed, the Wije’winen Centre will be central hub in the heart of the city to provide culturally relevant services and experiences for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people. It will become a center for cultural collaboration that helps to foster a sense of Indigenous identity and belonging in the urban context and serve as a highly visible emblem of reconciliation that welcomes everyone. Most importantly, it will be an essential landmark that enhances

visibility of Indigenous culture and helps to remind Nova Scotians, Canadians and visitors to this region, of the important history and contribution of Indigenous peoples to the Province, the Atlantic Region, all of Canada and North America.

As Every One Every Day grows, it carries the spirit of Wije’winen into neighbourhoods

Truth & Reconciliation at Every One Every Day

—working shoulder to shoulder with residents to create a growing network of neighbourhood projects invite the participation of everyone. These projects form the basis of new relationships, peer to peer learning, and harmonious interactions with the places in which we live.

At Every One Every Day, we are on a journey to discover what it means to live in ways that honour our responsibilities as Treaty People, and work together daily to build a more reconciled future for all.

As a starting place, we have developed a set of guideposts that can help us to be aware of our impact and ensure that we work together in a good way. The actions we take to support these guideposts reflect our efforts around decolonized practice.

Reconciliation

Guideposts

• Considering our impact on the First Peoples of this land, and with the same lens, taking care to eliminate the on-going harm and oppression of racialized and marginalized communities.

• Building Indigenous identity and belonging in the urban context.

• Creating space for truth and honouring the process of healing.

• Thinking and acting for future generations.

• Recognizing the interconnectedness of all living things and being a good relative.

Learn more about important pieces of our shared history and what this means for us all now by reading about the Treaties of Peace and Friendship Treaty Education Nova ScotiaHome and the 96 Calls to Action Reports - NCTR.

As Every One Every Day continues to deepen its connection and presence in the North End, we also recognize that the African Nova Scotian community have called this area home for centuries and have been forcibly displaced and marginalized on this land. We acknowledge the resilience of so many in the face of systemic oppression, as we work to create a more just and equitable society for all.

“Decolonized practice” refers to the ways in which we choose to examine and undo colonizing processes that are woven into our social fabric and institutions, and hold up structures of discrimination, oppression, and power imbalances. Examples of decolonized practices could be centering marginalized voices, recognizing Indigenous sovereignty, and sharing power.

“Being a good relative” means to acknowledge the interconnectedness among people, land, and nature by living in a way that honours a relationship of respect, reciprocity, and stewardship.

Call-Out to North End

Wed, Nov. 16, 2022 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Gottingen St. Neighbourhood Shop

Let’s get creative together!

Over the past few months, the Every One Every Day Team has heard from some incredible local makers who have an idea to work together to turn the Gottingen St. Neighbourhood Shop into a pop-up retail space. We don’t know what it will look like or what will be sold there, and that’s where you come in!

Are you a maker or creator in the North End who would like to try selling your wares as part of a collective? Whether you make pottery, jewelry, clothing, art, or something else, would you like to take part in the design and set-up of a neighbourhood pop-up shop, close to where you live?

Come in for a cup of tea or coffee, meet other makers nearby, and let’s chat about ideas to transform the Gottingen St. Neighbourhood Shop into a place to market and sell your locally made products. Most importantly, you’ll connect with others who are living in the community and are working to make and sell things locally. Let’s come up with exciting ideas to work together in ways that can support collaborative business!

A thousand

Everyone comes from somewhere.

Our kin from Africville, Cousins from Mi’kma’ki

Family from across the oceans and friends from a different sea.

You may think “what a sweet hobby”

Or “oh, isn’t this cute.”

We come in a thousand different colours with a thousand favourite foods.

We come with a thousand kinds of knowledge and a thousand different truths.

We come with a thousand kinds of pain and a thousand kinds of wisdom.

We’ve learned a thousand different tricks on how to navigate a system.

Everyone comes from somewhere

From families of blood or ones that are chosen.

When life is laid out for you or you’re just thrown in.

We have youth who will take a thousand different paths to find their own way.

We have Elders keeping generational trauma at bay.

The lanes, streets and avenues of the North End.

Have a thousand different stories written within.

Tales of Pride and tragedy etched into the sidewalk.

Of togetherness and culture, jump out like hopscotch.

We’ve got a thousand different rhymes etched into walls over time.

Centres of love and friendship keep us alive.

I have found my people in this place.

Access to my history and Nation as we take up our rightful space.

I have spoken a thousand different words,

On mics in back rooms just waiting to be heard.

Ideas spring forth from this community,

With a thousand different ways to weave together unity.

With insight from our children and the deft hands of adults.

There are a thousand different ways to reach a result.

We welcome PhDs and degrees.

We welcome starlight and the trees.

We know that smartness exists within and beyond the universities.

We’ll take your red seals and tickets.

Please share the recipe for your grandmother’s biscuits.

Please show us the best ways to lay down tracks and rhymes.

And someone else will show you graphic design.

But you don’t understand what we’ve all been through. For so many of us to come together and share what we know. We took on everything that the world could throw.

For language to be shared, Children kept on speaking while scared. Even after Africville was razed bare, Hope still managed to bloom brilliantly in the Square.

There are a thousand different ways to get to where you need to go. And we invite you to stop by for a tea and to say hello.

For a stitch and bitch.

A jingle dance class.

Get that bike tuned up, Learn that thing you’ve been putting off at last!

This place is so bright and complex.

With a thousand different talents, Please let us flex.

We are proud of what we have to offer from our bodies and our hearts. It’s what keeps these streets strong and from falling apart.

Your neighbour’s smile and your best friend’s tunes.

We really do hope that we’ll see you again soon. To share all of ourselves with each one of us. With our skills and scars, knowing we’re enough.

We are excited to meet you.

So please do come through. We grow love here, in a thousand different ways. Every single one of us, every single day.
