The Land We Are On

The Gottingen St. Neighbourhood Shop and Every One Every Day Kjipuktuk (EOED) exists in Halifax North, which is situated in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq. Oral histories, supported by written evidence and artifacts, tell us that the Mi’kmaq have occupied this territory for over 13,000 years.

Mi’kma’ki is covered by the Treaties of Peace and Friendship, which the Mi’kmaq, Wolastoqey, and Peskotomuhkatiyik Peoples first signed with the British in 1726. These treaties did not implicate or affirm the surrender or transfer of lands and resources to the British but recognized Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqey title and set the rules for what was to be a long-standing relationship between nations, initially preventing war and facilitating trade.

For the Mi’kmaq, these treaties are revered as legal covenants. These sacred pacts are the foundation of Mi’kmaq - Euro-Canadian government relations and we all, as treaty people, must recognize and appreciate their legitimacy if we are to truly acknowledge the presence of the Mi’kmaq—past, present, and future.

This land acknowledgment is a commitment to build upon as we recognize that such statements are inconsequential without meaningful action toward reconciliation. Because we operate on stolen lands, we stand strong in our commitment to learning our shared history and honouring truth, supporting healing and offering reparations, and upholding Active Reconciliation.

Where people from across communities can get to know one another through respectful learning and sharing stories across cultures and generations.

Mark your calendars! The Every One Every Day Summer Program begins July 27th, 2023 and is full of hands-on activities hosted by people that live in your neighbourhood, and they want you to join in! Whether it’s making, cooking, playing, building, fixing, mending, repairing, dancing, or anything else – Every One Every Day has something for everyone.

Come along to take part or share your ideas for fun and creative projects we could get started on, in preparation for Fall. Everyone is welcome.

What is Every One Every Day about?

Practical ‘hands on’ sessions brought to you by local residents. Every One Every Day brings together people from different parts of the North End neighbourhood to create and learn from one another. These projects involve sharing spaces, skills and resources. They range from batch cooking and community meals, getting outside to explore the neighbourhood, sharing cultural knowledge and traditions, as well as making, crafting, building, repairing fixing and much more.

Support with getting things going in your neighbourhood. The Every One Every Day team is here to help take care of all the essentials such as finding spaces, purchasing materials, ensuring health and safety and inviting others to take part. To create each Program, we work with residents to surface their ideas and bring them to life in the neighbourhood. We hope it will spark more ideas and creativity around future projects that we can grow together. And this is just the start! What ways of bringing people together can you imagine in the North End? Come in for a cup of tea and let’s see what we can make happen together.

What, Where, When?

The Neighbourhood Shop

The Gottingen St. Neighbourhood Shop is located at 2169 Gottingen Street and is open to the public during set hours on weekdays and weekends.

The Neighbourhood Shop is a creative hub where residents are invited to meet and connect with one another, take part in fun and practical activities led by other residents, and work together to plan and grow all sorts of neighbourhood projects. Don’t be fooled, there is nothing for sale there!

When you come to the shop, you’ll find a range of equipment and supplies, a welcoming team to introduce you to the space, inspirational project ideas, and open invitations to lead and take part in things that interest you. Whether it’s a focus on greening projects, cooking, fixing and repairing, fashion and fabrics, or anything else, it’s a space for neighbours to meet and do things together.

In the shop you’ll find equipment like sewing machines and fabric, basic tools for making and woodworking, crafting materials, computers, supplies for gardening projects, and much more.

The Community Build Trailer

What if you had easy access to all the tools and supplies needed to build basic building projects for the neighbourhood? What if you were supported to learn new skills and connect to people close by to help bring your idea to life? Maybe it’s building new gardens or gathering spaces, or other fun ideas like building colourful neighbourhood bird boxes or a portable stage for pop-up community performances.

The Community Build Trailer is here to bring your ideas to life! It’s a mobile unit that can travel just about anywhere and is equipped with all the tools necessary to build or fix basic things and inspire fresh ideas around how residents can work together to shape different spaces in their own neighbourhoods. Have an idea for a build project we could work on together? Get in touch!

Look through the Summer Program calendar to find out where the Community Build Trailer will be and what projects we’ll be working on. No experience is required, just bring your ideas, or even a DIY project you’d like support with, and we’ll get creative together.

During Spring Program, a total of 505 residents participated across 68 sessions, more than doubling the number of residents who participated in Fall Program 2022. Of those who participated, 221 were new to Every One Every Day.

‘Language Club’ sessions were among the most attended during Spring Program and will be offered again during the summer as ‘Language Connect’. These sessions emerged through a co-design process with staff and community members connected to Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia (ISANS). This first iteration was bursting with participation and excitement. On average, 32 participants gathered to teach and learn across 10 different languages.

There were many ways in the Spring Program for residents to engage with, learn about and from different cultures. As the host of a session called Breaking Bread says, “The session ended up being a great way to facilitate a multi-cultural exchange, since everyone got a chance to chat about what bread looks like in their own culture and families” –Session Host

Throughout this paper, you’ll find a range of projects you can contribute to, as well as inspiring ideas and projects we’ve come across from elsewhere. But there is no limit to ideas, and we want to hear yours! Stop by for a cup of tea, take part in a session, or send us an e-mail—we’d love to chat about what we can make happen together.

Curbside Blooms

Let’s make the North End beautiful together! Curbside Blooms was started by a neighbour Quincy, who’s been working with North End community members to add some vibrancy to some of the planters along Gottingen Street. But there’s lots more to plant! So, we’re calling all enthusiastic neighbours with a green thumb or interest in gardening to help plant the rest of the garden beds. No experience needed. Mi’kmaq History Month showcases Mi’kmaq history and celebrates the succession of Mi’kmaw culture despite years of oppression and discrimination. It also recognizes and honours the many achievements of L’nuk (term that the Mi’kmaq use for themselves meaning ‘the people’) from across Mi’kma’ki.

Did you know that October 1 is Treaty Day in Nova Scotia and marks the beginning of Mi’kmaq History Month celebrations all over the province? Treaty Day recognizes the Peace and Friendship Treaties between the Mi’kmaq and the British Crown, which were first signed in 1752, and reminds us of our commitment to one another, as kin and as treaty people.

Not sure where to start on your Truth and Reconciliation learning journey? Are you in need of opportunities and resources to learn about the Mi’kmaq and become an active ally? Visit with the Every One Every Day team and start the conversation!

In 1993 Premier John Savage and Mi’kmaw Grand Chief Ben Sylliboy declared October as Mi’kmaq History Month to recognize and celebrate Mi’kmaw culture and traditions past, present, and future.

Understanding Reconciliation

The Every One Every Day team, along with support from the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre, have created ‘Kokum’ (translates to “big old tree” in Mi’kmaw), a planning resource for discovering and adopting decolonized learning and practice in our work, while maintaining accountability to our commitment to Active Reconciliation. At the heart of Kokum is Reconciliation, which is represented by a strawberry shaped like a heart. The strawberry teaches us forgiveness and peace, and signifies the power of change and healing.

We invite you to stop by the Neighbourhood Shop to explore the large print out of Kokum and discuss what ‘Everyday Actions’ we can all take to advance Truth and Reconciliation in the North End.

How does Every One Every Day define and interpret Active Reconciliation?

• Raising awareness about colonization in “Canada” and exposing the ongoing injustices and harms towards First Nation, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.

• Disrupting oppressive and inequitable spaces and processes. Reclaiming individual and collective identity, not just of First Nation, Inuit, and Métis People, but of everyone. Restoring harmony with all of nature.

• Reviving and reclaiming treaty relationships.

• Acknowledging and valuing Indigenous knowledge systems.

Powwows 2023

Are you interested in learning more about Indigenous cultures and traditions? Have you ever been interested in experiencing a powwow? In Mi’kma’ki, they’re often referred to as a Mawio’mi, which means ‘a gathering’ and it’s a chance for people to see, hear and experience First Nations culture firsthand. Summer 2023 Calendar

The Mi’kmaq have traditionally used the moon as a measurement of time passing. This provides a 13-month annual calendar, representing the 13 times the moon travels around the earth in a year. The names given to each month, or moon, are based on whatever is happening in the surrounding natural environment at that time.

Traditional Mi’kmaw Tea Recipes

The Mi’kmaw word for tea is pitewey (pronounced bit-eh-whey). Tea has always been and continues to be a fundamental part of Mi’kmaw approaches to healing and hospitality.

Mi’kmaw Strawberry Tea (makes 4 cups)

• 4 tsp of dried strawberry leaves

• 4 cups of water

Add leaves to boiling water, remove from heat. Steep for 5 minutes.

Mi’kmaw Blueberry Tea (makes 4 cups)

• 80 dried blueberry leaves

• 40 dried blueberries

4 x 3" cinnamon sticks

• 4 cups of water

Add leaves, berries, and cinnamon stick to boiling water. Steep for 10 minutes. Sweeten with honey if desired.

JULY Peskewiku’s (pronounced bes-gay-we-goos) “Birds shedding feathers moon”

Many First Nations regard various bird kin as sacred teachers. Their teachings are preserved within the culture of individual Nations through their stories, language, landmarks, art, music, dance, regalia, sacred items, and ceremony. Feathers are sacred gifts that signify strength, honour, respect, and freedom. The Eagle, kitpu in Mi’kmaw (pronounced git-boo), is held in the highest regard because of its gifted ability to fly high in the sky, delivering our prayers to Creator as a sacred messenger. Gifting an Eagle feather is a significant act of appreciation for knowledge that has been shared or the binding of a newfound relationship built on trust and reciprocity.

“Berry Ripening Moon”

To the Mi’kmaq, plants are not seen as a food “resource” that only serve to provide sustenance for our bodies. The Mi’kmaq understand that we are in relationship with plants and that they must be respected and cared for, grounding the relationship in reciprocity. All parts of the plant, berries, roots, leaves, bark, and flowers can provide vitamins and minerals for our well-being as food and medicine, contribute as dye for art, jewelry-making, and regalia, are woven into ceremony and communal gatherings, and offer us teachings.

Wild blueberries, pkwiman in Mi’kmaw (pronounced ep-gwee-mun), are a traditional Mi’kmaw food. They are harvested in August and continue to sweeten into September.

This project is a collaboration between Every One Every Day, OSO planning + design, Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre’s Youth Program, Wonder’neath, and local artists Angela Doyle-Faulkner and Vanessa Thomas. The painting process of the mural will be open for community members to join so that we can work together to make a piece of art that reflects our community and the kind of future we can build together. Precious Plastics

Precious Plastics is part of a global movement giving plastic waste a new life! At the Neighbourhood Shop, you can use simple kitchen tools to transform bottle caps into jewelery, buttons and more.

This is a little project with big potential: in other cities, Precious Plastics projects are making furniture, home goods, and even construction materials all from repurposed plastic! Shape This Space is an opportunity for us to work together to shape our neighbourhood and we are getting started with a garden and gathering space at the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre! Imagine a neighbourhood where there are many beautiful spaces to meet and gather, take in artwork made by community members, connect to nature in the city, or learn interesting things about the different communities that live in the neighbourhood. The Babysitting Co-op is a platform that helps arrange free babysitting trades to support friends and neighbours when they need it and build relationships among children. Fallen Fruit

Los Angeles, USA

Three friends decided to push a shopping cart around on night walks to gather unpicked fruit. Over 100 people joined them on night fruit forages, neighbours invited them in to pick fruit in the backyard, and groups of residents gathered to make jam. People who have never met before sit down to make experimental jam using home grown or street-picked fruit.

Worldwide

Repair Cafés are free meeting places for local people to repair items together. Tools and materials are provided to help people repair clothes, furniture, appliances, bikes, toys and more! Visitors bring broken items from home to repair alongside specialists as part of an ongoing learning process.

Ball Boxes Brazil

A campaign in Brazil places footballs in boxes throughout the streets to encourage kids to get moving. The ball brings children from around the neighbourhood together and creates a centralized space for community interaction and activity.

Collaborative Business

Every One Every Day Collaborative Business programs are designed to be collaborative, emphasizing and strengthening teamwork and shared responsibilities to lower personal risk, and build stronger collectives. They create opportunities for residents to learn skills, bring forth ideas, and test new products and services in a supportive environment.

Launching Pantry!

Do you currently make a jarred food product that you’d like to start selling? Do you dream of starting a food product line but don’t know where to start? Are you interested in working alongside others to build new skills and confidence around a food-based retail collective?

Take part in Every One Every Day’s Collaborative Business Program!

Throughout this 10-week program (Aug. 10 – Oct. 14), you’ll have a chance to share your favourite recipes and learn the skills needed to sell your product at local markets. Together we’ll review the ins and outs of safe water-bath technique jarring practices, test your recipe with the public, design product labels, create a collaborative brand and have the opportunity to sell the products you make at a few local markets! Pantry promotes sustainability by utilizing surplus ingredients from local gardens and organizations such as Veith House to create eco-conscious product. We will also have access to a commercial kitchen at the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre.

Whether it’s cooking at home for yourself, preparing food for others, or trying your hand at making your own food product— we can all use a food safety check-up! Every One Every Day is offering the chance to sign up for a food hygiene safety course by Safety Check 1. The course includes ten hours of online learning that you can do at home, at your own pace. Backpack Program at MNFC

The Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre is excited to announce the return of their Backpack Program that Every One Every Day is happy to support! The Neighbourhood Shop will be a collection location for new school supplies that will fill backpacks so come drop off new or likenew school supplies during Shop hours before August 4th and write well wishes to Indigenous students for the 2023/24 school year.
