WOMEN IN CHARGE

No Longer Daddy’s Little Girl! By Tianna Robinson

We’ve seen her grow up right before our eyes. From a cute teen on MTV’s Run’s House, to a sexy socialite and business woman manning her own empire, a descendant of hip-hop royalty, Angela Simmons is busy carving out her own lane. Beauty mogul, fashion designer and philanthropist are just a few of the titles that Ms. Simmons can claim. Angela sat down with EGL correspondent Tianna Robinson and dished about everything from business, beauty, boys and how she got her banging body.

What’s new in your world Angela? What are you working on? Where do I start?! So much going on! I’m so excited; I don’t know where to begin. What are you most excited about? My collaboration with Indique Hair! I have my own extension hairline being released June 21! The line is called ‘Bikini’ and it’s a mixture of curly and wavy hair. That’s huge! We are huge fans of Indique over here, no wonder you’re excited! Yes, I’m a huge fan and loyal customer to Indique. I’ve been wearing their extensions for a couple of years now and always wanted to work with them. I came up with the concept and texture myself. It’s perfect from the summer. The hair is so versatile, you can go from the pool or beach with curly/wavy hair then straighten it effortlessly and it’s bone straight. Wow, that’s innovative and very ambitious of you. What else are you working on? My sister and I launched a website not too long ago, AngelaandVanessa.com. It’s a fun way for our fans to keep up with us. We give them a sneak peak into our personal lives while chatting about clothes, fashion, health, and beauty! All the things girls love! It’s basically an online community for girl talk. We hear we can expect a fashion line from you. Is this true? Yes, you can! Very soon! I don’t have an exact date yet, but I’m working on a fashion line, very different from Pastry. It will exude my sense of style, the line will be couture and high-end. It’s a dream of mine to see my line on runways during Fashion Week! Fashion and philanthropy are my two loves; I’m always going to be doing something related to either one.

What charities or philanthropies are you involved with? I spend a huge chunk of my time working with PETA and the Children Miracle Network trying to bring awareness to sickle cell anemia. Lately, I’ve been working with an organization called NY Class, to get the horses off the streets of New York. The horses that ride us around on carriages are treated so horribly and horses have no business being in the city. I believe that everyone, if possible should choose a philanthropic cause and dedicate some time to it. A little bit of your time can make a significant impact in the lives of others and on the world. Well said and agreed. Entrepreneurship runs in your family. Do you think this has been the driving force and inspiration behind your motivation? Definitely! Growing up watching my dad and Uncle Russell’s work ethic naturally rubbed off on me. Their work ethic is insanely rigorous. I was always told that I can go for anything and hard work and passion will take me there. Having great models around that inspire me has also been extremely helpful. I look at people like my Aunt Kimora in amazement. She’s a business women, mother and fashionista. She manages it all, almost effortlessly – that’s admirable. Beyoncé is a role model of mine as well. I’ve seen her build her career from the ground up. She went from being a Destiny’s Child group member to one of the most prominent entertainers in the world, while still remaining a humble person with a remarkable spirit. Speaking of bikinis. You are always spotted in a teeny tiny bikini showing off your body. The girl we saw on TV didn’t have that body. What has changed? I LOVE the beach and I love my bikinis, so I work out a LOT. I have a personal trainer Cont’ on next page

“A lady never kisses and tells.”

“Growing up watching my dad and Uncle Russell’s work ethic naturally rubbed off on me.”

What are your favorite summertime activities? Isn’t it obvious?! The beach and tanning! DUH! Also, love family time, any time of the year.

I meet with a couple days a week. I do a lot of outdoor running, swimming, cardio, yoga and horseback riding. I mix it up a lot, but I’m always moving and working out. I became a vegetarian a couple years ago that along with being active helps me keep my body where I want it to be.

(Giving Angela the side eye) You’ve been seen lately looking cutesy and comfortable with a certain sexy son of a rap mogul! What’s good with that?! (In between laughs) I’m single.

All that hard work is paying off, you look great! Do you recommended for those of us trying to tighten and shed the pounds to become vegetarians? I say do what works best for you and your body. I do think you must love yourself from the beginning, no matter what the scale says. It’s a process; make a lifestyle change with your eating habits and fitness. Be committed to the gym and have a focused mind on what you want your body to look like. Are you a girly girl? I can be. Being a fashion designer, my style varies with my mood; it’s all over the place. Some days I’m extra girly and chic, the next day I’m dressed down with some jeans and Jordan’s. What are your favorite summer beauty products? NARS bronzing powder is a must for me. I also really like Bobbi Brown beach spray. They both give me the beach glow I love to have.

What are your summertime plans? Working! I’m a workaholic, so fun comes second to that. I love what I do, so it’s all good. Is there any new romance you want to tell us about? No, I’m single.

So to be clear, you’re not dating Romeo?! I’m single. I’m cool and loving being single! Haha, ok. Straight from the horses mouth. What would people be surprised to know about you? I’m a tattoo addict. I have nine, with plans on getting more. They are not in visible places, so I can still conduct myself as a professional when need to. Nice! Where and what are they?! (Brief silence) A lady never kisses and tells, LOL. Is that your motto that you live by? Haha… one of them. No, seriously, my motto is “Do your best and forget the rest”. My Dad always told me this! If I’m not doing my best, I’m not expecting success, so I make it a point to always give my all…and then some!

Is ”Stand Your Ground” a License To Kill? By Kalyca Lee Johnson ESQ

KNOWING THE FACTS Trayvon Martin is a name that has gained national recognition in the wake of his tragic and untimely death. The Trayvon Martin case has also introduced the country to a law many of us were unaware existed; the “stand your ground” law. George Zimmerman’s initial ability to evade arrest by evoking the “stand your ground” law as his defense came under sharp criticism by the public at large. As a result, EGL has received many questions about this unfortunate situation. So, we turned to EGL’s legal correspondent to give us some back ground on this controversial law. Promoted and drafted by the National Rifle Association, “stand your ground” was adopted in Florida in 2005 with over 20 states adopting a similar version of the law. The “stand your ground” law allows you to use self-defense when a reasonable belief of a threat exists, without the duty to retreat first. It provides that any person may use deadly force when “he or she reasonably believes that such force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to himself or herself.” PURUSANT TO FLORIDA STATUTE 776.012. George Zimmerman, therefore, claimed he shot Trayvon Martin in self-defense because he was being attacked. According to Florida legislators responsible for adopting the law, the law does not support Zimmerman’s self-defense claim because Zimmerman pursued and confronted Martin initially. Consequently, the law does not authorize such confrontations as stated by Florida legislators, but the problem is the law as drafted does not say otherwise. A majority of the states have adopted the Castle doctrine, which states that a person does not have a duty to retreat when under attack at their home premises. The idea is that in the privacy of your home you have the absolute right to protect your “castle” as well as yourself from harm. However, some states like Florida have taken this doctrine further by removing “home” and broadening the scope to anywhere a person is lawfully located. Therefore, Zimmerman, according to the law, had the lawful right to be on the premises. And as a result, was able to stand his ground from the alleged threat of imminent harm resulting in his self-

defense claim. The duty to retreat is a self-defense claim which is raised by a defendant as a justification for a criminal homicide or grave bodily harm. The idea is that the defendant acted reasonably and tried to take steps to avoid the impending conflict prior to using deadly force or harm. Most American jurisdictions acknowledge that the duty to retreat or take reasonable steps to avoid impending conflict is not always possible. For instance, in some jurisdictions there is no duty to retreat when doing so puts the person under attack in harm’s way or danger. Additionally, as stated earlier, most legislation does not require a person to retreat in their home or use reasonable steps to avoid conflict in their dwelling. Further, police officers never have a duty to retreat when in the line of duty.

The problem with George Zimmerman’s “self-defense” claim is that he confronted Trayvon Martin resulting in Martin’s death. Trayvon Martin was unarmed and his only threat appears to be the hoodie that he was wearing, and the shade of his skin. “Stand your ground” laws should only permit people who are threatened to stand their own ground and protect themselves. Under no circumstances should people be able to confront others in an antagonistic manner, end up using deadly force, and escape punishment. Public outrage finally resulted in the arrest of George Zimmerman by a special prosecutor on April 11th, 2012. We will all have to wait and see what impact this self-defense claim will have on this case!

RISING STAR

TO BE SUCCESSFUL Women taking control of their today and creating their own tomorrow’s

Leader of a New School By Ayesha J. Gallion

Lorna Hanley is one of those multidimensional women who can explore in any career path, wear any color clothing, and engage just about anyone in conversation. Despite the boundless possibilities, this Temple Hills, Md. native considers herself grounded firmly in her life’s mission as founding principal of The Baltimore Leadership School for Girls. As an educational leader who has traveled throughout the country to observe other institutions as well as a panelist who has presented ideas alongside Susan Taylor and commediene Me’Shell – Hanley has pretty effective ideas about how to support girls in becoming confident intellects who care about themselves as well as the world they are sure to shape.

With two parents as staunch advocates for education, Hanley studied English at Morgan State University before working as a news producer at Baltimore’s WJZ (Oprah’s former stomping grounds). As if dabbling in B-More’s current events weren’t enough, Hanley acquired her license and eventually became a certified high school English teacher before being promoted department chairperson of her English Department. Hanley’s instructional savoir faire paved a yellow brick road right to the College of Notre Dame, where she earned her Master’s in Educational Leadership. Shortly thereafter, served as Resident Principal of Digital High and soon began focusing on aspirations to fuse the quality of life and education for young women. Hanley envisioned a school that provided high educational standards and results for girls of all social backgrounds while giving them a rich experience that mirrored a prep school engaged in community service, social awareness, and cultural enrichment. Driven by faith and courage, Hanley secured an opportunity to plan a school for the students she now fondly refers to as her girls. The Baltimore Leadership School for Girls is one of the city’s high-

est performing middle schools and the first school in the city with a salad bar! (Hanley’s also big on healthy eating when it comes to her girls. She once confiscated fried chicken wings and hot sauce that a student picked up for breakfast from Lexington Market en route to school). Teachers and staff create an atmosphere that centers on the girls’ character and academic advancement. Hanley shares, “Yes, it is a lot of hard, long work, but so rewarding and fulfilling! I can’t imagine doing anything else with my life!” She shares tips with EGL’s readers below: ON PARENTS WHO “POP”: I get excited when I see what I call POP, “Parenting On Purpose.” POP occurs when a parent/guardian is completely aware of and engaged in the on-going process that requires the parent to be deliberate and purposeful about their child’s company, conversations, diet, television shows, website, wardrobe choices, and music. I am a huge advocate for Helicopter and Tiger Moms. I wish we had more in our community. THE ADVOCATE PARENT VS. THE ATTORNEY PARENT One of the biggest mistakes occurs when a parent confuses being their child’s advocate

with being their child’s attorney. An Advocate Parent protects, provides for and counsels, while an Attorney Parent will defend even when their client (the child) is wrong. An Attorney Parent will also transact important business on their client’s behalf. It is so disheartening when a child who has had an Attorney Parent is unable to speak up for herself, cook, clean, or share an independent thought because she grew up with her parent doing everything for her. We also have a generation of young people who feel entitled and have no sense or understanding for consequences, because their Attorney Parent defended or negotiated for them even in the midst of wrongdoing. ON PARENTING THE PRE-TEEN: This has to be one of the most challenging tasks in the 21st century. Imagine, as a parent, competing with Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Facetime, and all the other social mediums that seem to have a greater influence on our girls. One of the greatest mistakes is when parents think the word “parent” is just a noun and not realize that it is also a very powerful verb.

RELATIONSHIPS

DATING AND MATING

Can Women Really Do Anything Better Than Men By Precious Avorkliyah

No you can’t! Woman cannot do ANYTHING better than men; maybe most things, but they definitely cannot think like a man better than a man! We cannot mimic the emotional detachment and superficiality of their desires in order to avoid emotional disappointments. We cannot shape our behaviors, expectations, and emotional responses in order to manipulate and create the most appeasing conditions during a relationship. There is enough confusion amongst the sexes with women becoming more and more detached from their value and fundamental design. And these feeble attempts to imitate have left us women in distress and internal conflict. We mustn’t lose the true meaning of what is actually being suggested. Think of it like this… think outside yourself and act like the you that you aspire to be.

Think Outside Yourself

“Anything you can do I can do better I can do anything better than you… No you can’t… Yes I can… No you can’t… Yes I can! Yes I can!”

Too often we form unrealistic expectations of others. This is due to our tendency to want others to be a reflection of our own values, emotional awareness, and etiquette. We become aggravated when men don’t reciprocate exactly what we give. We have to stop being so Self Centered! You can’t get frustrated with your man for behaving in a way that is innate to his fundamental design. Men aren’t designed to nurture, nest, or be emotionally inclined; women are. And while men can learn and become all of those

things; don’t expect more than he is able or willing to give. Definitely don’t ignore signs that may help you discern if a man is simply a jerk or just a man with reservations. The objective isn’t to teach him nor is it to engineer yourself to think like him; it is simply to open your mind and learn him as he his. Know that learning a man, also means understanding that he isn’t just a man, but a man with a different background, reference point, and perspective than you. Act Like the You That You Aspire to Be We need to STOP being careless and reckless if we really want to be treated with dignity and respect. It is as simple as that. Just STOP it. We can stop allowing our insecurities to plague on our relationships if we become aware and make a conscious decision to STOP acting out! Because women are more emotionally inclined than men; we can uncover the truths related to our insecurities and how they manifest in your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Once you find your answers you will know enough to be okay with simply being you; and your man will too. You will no longer have irrational expectations, but you better have high standards, to which the right man will reach. There is nothing wrong with thinking like a woman and acting like a woman; as long as you do it with a broader perspective and with esteem, conviction, and confidence.

RELATIONSHIP

Redesigning, Refining, and Re-establishing your "type of man" By Precious Avorkliyah

DATING AND MATING Most women have had their fair share of relationship fails, fumbles, and falls. It seems like every time we recover from the last we find ourselves right back in another dead end relationship. We force situations that have neither foundation nor potential and we need to start sharing the blame for these world wind disasters. We say we like a certain “type” of man, yet due to desperation or deprivation we take whoever comes along and however he comes along. We fixate on one feature or quality that the man possesses and choose to ignore all the other shortcomings that disqualify him from truly being our “type”. Women often make statements such as, “I just need someone who knows how to control me” or “I need a man that knows how to appreciate a woman”. Thinking like this tends to cloud our lens when assessing potential love interests. So we end up with the “bad boy” who can control us but lacks control in every other area of life. He’s financially unstable, has a bad temper, illegitimate children, a criminal history and has a number of past relationships lingering. Or, we select the “player” who appreciates women but struggles to contain his romantic flare to just one woman. Every now and again we might run into the “push over” that meets all our needs, but cannot head our house hold or father our children because he lacks confidence and leadership skills. We cycle through these types over and over again, different scenes, same script. We must stop being so

immature and superficial about how we select our men. Have standards, but make sure they are well defined and you understand how a man who meets those standards will demonstrate them. Consider the “too legit man”. This man is not perfect and he may have some of the qualities of the former types; however this man has direction, goals and ambition that are well inclined with our own. Sadly, we usually resist this type of man because he seems too rare and just too legit. We badger him every chance we get; almost to force him to surface as one of the former types. We verbally abuse him or ridicule him as to test his true intentions and allegiance. Then we lose him and label him as one of those dead-beat men, and end up reverting back to the patterns that we are more familiar with: The “player”, “bad boy”, and “push over”. LISTEN! If you want a man that is going to lead your household, father your children, promote your emotional and spiritual growth, and supplement your financial contributions, then you must be the woman who is prepared to accept and embrace him. Recondition yourself. You are a reflection of the type of man you attract; therefore you can become the difference that you want to see in your man.

KNOWING THE FACTS

LIFESTYLE

As summer sets in, Americans are going in various directions regarding extracurricular activities. For some it’s time to take the bike out of storage, while others start a walking regime to increase heart health, but what about the forgotten heart exercise, volunteering. Though considered boring by some, volunteering can afford awesome benefits such as learning a new hobby, career networking, and most of all feeling good about helping others in need.

Tips for success: • Determine your motives for wanting to get involved. Are you out of work looking to sharpen your skills? Volunteering is your chance to network into a possible job opening. Or, are you looking to offer a few hours of your time a week to give back to your favorite charity? This step is imperative to the success of your efforts, because no one wants to waste minutes, hours, or even days volunteering without a genuine interest in the organization.

Volunteering, warming the heart of the world By Kanarian Kindred

• For those looking to sharpen your skills or network into a possible job opening, determine your target. Find organizations that focus on your work history and/or fields you’re looking to work. To put it bluntly, if you’re an out-of-work mechanic it doesn’t make sense volunteering at the local hospital if the ultimate goal is to keep your skills fresh. Upon locating an organization of interest, contact their volunteer relations department for further information. It’s important to know a resume and cover letter might be required before volunteering can take place. Also, certain organizations such as hospitals and the Salvation Army may require a background check before volunteering on the premises.

• For those looking to give back instead of sharpening any particular skill, the rules above can also apply. Focus on organizations you can give back to as well as have fun with. This would be a great time to venture off into something different from the norm. For example, if you love kids this might be a great time to volunteer at the church daycare. • Once your motivation and location have been determined, it’s time to work on schedules. Though volunteering doesn’t pay it’s still a vital part of the organization. Therefore, before you offer your services a reasonable amount of hours need to be established on your end. If you can only offer one day per month stick to it and do not increase unless your schedule honestly can afford it. • You have the motivation, hours, and location now get to work. • For more information on how to get involved or locate an organization, the following links are valuable resources: Volunteermatch http://www.volunteermatch.org/ Healthcare Volunteer http://www.healthcarevolunteer.com/home Reference source websites: Salvation Army link, question one confirms comment regarding background check in certain cases: http://www.thesalarmy.org/vol/faq.htm

A GETAWAY

South Beach Miami

By Ann-Marie Nicholson

Sleep & Play What’s not to love about South Beach? It’s like traveling to the Caribbean without having to leave the U.S. or bring your passport. Miami is mostly known for its wild Memorial Day weekend, which dilutes the things we love about Miami itself: The laid back vibe, the beautiful serene beaches, the amazing nightlife and the fantastic dining. To avoid the drama and higher costs, consider going right after Memorial Day—say that Tuesday—and you will not be disappointed. Summer in Miami is our version of spring in Paris.

For a more romantic vibe, we recommend staying at hotels above 21st and Collins like the Standard, the W or the Gansevoort. There are also the hotels that line Ocean Avenue below 5th Street. If you would like to be in the mix and close to everything, any of the hotels on Collins and Ocean below 14th Street but above 6th are great options. These locations are also conveniently close to all the nightclubs that make South Beach famous.

Eat No need to worry about your budget or money on this trip, South Beach offers many options. We like to eat where the locals eat such as Big Pink, for Cuban fare, Puerto Saqua, and our all time favorite, albeit in a new location, The Front Porch. Grill Fish and News Cafe are two staples you also don’t want to miss.

Shop Known for its shops as well as it’s a la fresca dining options; Lincoln Road is not to be missed. Spend a few hours eating and shopping on this grand, carless boulevard and you will forget that you are on South Beach. If you want the option of shopping and being close to the beach then stay on Collins and enjoy all the shops of Madison Avenue.

Organic, Just Do It!

By Kanarian Kindred

THEMSELVES

“so take care of yourself from the inside out”

Whether we want to face it or not, a high percentage of African-Americans are overweight and/or obese. According to statistics provided by heart.org, for non-Hispanic Blacks, 70.8% men and 77.7% women age 20 and older are overweight or obese (BMI 25.0 or higher). Therefore, it’s time we began to take drastic measures in regards to getting ourselves healthy. It begins with exercise and most importantly healthy eating. It’s no secret that organic food items are very expensive or lack flavor when cooked. Keep reading, I’m going to give you a few tips that will not only help you eat healthier, but also provide you with shopping tidbits when hunting for organic food items at a bargain.

Tips to get you started: • Try your local farmers market. These places are known for selling fresh garden items from farmers in the area, and some are switching to organically growing certain foods. These questions can be answered by talking to the seller. Farmer’s markets tend to have cheaper and more affordable produce than Whole Foods or Trader Joes. For those in major cities, and like to research online, or need good places to search, use the Eat Well Guide http:// www.eatwellguide.org/i.php?pd=Home a free online guide to finding local, sustainable, and organic food in the US and Canada. • Grow your own. The internet provides several sources for organizations not only providing tips for planting organic foods, but also trading regular seeds with organic ones. A wonderful resource site is http://www.seedsofchange.com, an organization that has been around since 1989 dedicating themselves to organic seeds among other products. A free catalog can be downloaded via the company website.

• Learn tasty recipes that fit your family’s pallet. We all have our own ideas of how we feel certain foods should be cooked, but it’s just as important to ensure the taste is there also. With websites such as http://www.organickitchen.com/ a person can learn the basics of healthy organic eating. The site also includes a cooking link providing websites of various cooking experts offering tasty recipes. • For those interested in subscribing to organic food blogs, these sites are great resources: http://deliciouslyorganic.net/recipes/, http://www.organicauthority.com, and http://blog. wholefoodsmarket.com/. Though this is a quick tidbit, it’s an awesome start to healthful living. Happy Cooking!!!

Tips to Beat Top Summer Health Hazards By Dr. Louisa C. Gaiter Johnson

The summer is a time of warm weather, vacations and all sorts of pleasures. But before you race outside, make sure you’re ready for everything the season can throw at you. That means more than just slathering on sunscreen. The last thing you want is to have to sit out with a sprained ankle, a case of food poisoning, or raging poison ivy.

THEMSELVES “so take care of yourself from the inside out”

Get Outside to Exercise: Pick one outdoor activity, such as going on a hike, taking a nature walk, cycling, roller blading, swimming, or playing games like tag with your kids. Also, remember that stretching is a very vital part of your exercise plan. Get a checkup with your doctor before you start any new workout plan, which can really prevent slips, sprains and many other health issues. Be Sun Savvy: Stay out of the sun between noon and 3pm. Wear a hat, sunglasses, T-shirt and apply sunscreen with an SPF factor of 30 or higher. Sunscreen needs to be applied 20 minutes before going out into the sun and then reapplied regularly, especially when in and out of the water. If you experience sunburn, make sure to apply plenty of moisturizer and don’t expose the skin to any more sunlight. If sunstroke occurs, move the person to a cool area, provide cool drinks and seek medical attention as needed.

Be Good To Your Eyes: To protect your vision at work and at play, wear protective eyewear. When outdoors, wear sunglasses that block at least 99% of ultraviolet A and B rays. Sunglasses can help prevent cataracts as well as wrinkles around the eyes. Dehydration: Drink plenty of fluids as dehydration can occur very quickly in the sun. Children and older people are especially susceptible to dehydration, so make sure the family drinks small amounts of liquid at regular intervals to keep hydrated.

Stomach Issues: If you are prone to an upset stomach, do not eat unwashed fruit or salads. Make sure that food is thoroughly cooked and is hot. Try not to eat unusual or spicy foods. Don’t drink tap water or take ice cubes in your drinks as changes in the water may bring on an upset stomach, esp. while traveling abroad. It is important to drink plenty of water and eat fiber-rich foods to help avoid constipation.

Improve Diet: Check out a Farmer’s Market near you weekly (every Saturday morning, perhaps), and stock up on the fruit you’ve been missing all winter. Put those berries, peaches, watermelon, or whatever looks super-ripe into your smoothies, add a sprig of fresh mint, and enjoy. Some may decide to have a cup of mixed fresh berries -- blackberries, blueberries, or strawberries every day. They’ll help you load up on antioxidants, which may help prevent damage to tissues and reduce the risks of agerelated illnesses. Blueberries and blackberries are especially antioxidant-rich.

Lastly Learn your Leaves: Poison ivy, sumac, and oak aren’t just woodland hazards. These leaves can also pop up at the beach, in your backyard, and in parks. If you don’t know what they look like, check out photos. If you believe you’ve come in contact with any poisonous plant, wash the infected area immediately with soap and water. If a rash persists, seek medical attention.

KNOWING THE TRUTH What inspired you to write your book Shot Girls? I met Drake, we were cool, and one day out of nowhere he said ‘You know what? You should write a book.’ I’m always really open with my friends and people I’m around about my shots. I never lied about them. I think he saw it as being something small, but to me it was confirmation. To me it was like God putting this person in my life saying this is what you need to do. I figured the only way for me to write [this book] was under a pen name, but then Drake said ‘Nah…fuck that! This is your story. Own it! Write it in your name.’ Literally, that Sunday I went out and I started [writing] the book.

Interview by Kenneth Miles

Bigger isn’t always better. Former video vixen Vanity Wonder can attest to that. In the hip-hop culture, big butts are idolized. Who can forget Sir Mixa-Lot’s famous line, “I like big butts and I can not lie.” This infatuation has lead many women to seek artificial enhancements. Plastic surgery is nothing new. For years women of all races have been going to doctors to nip/tuck and improve what they believe are their imperfections. But, plastic surgery comes with a heavy price tag and unaffordable to many. So, what about those who lack that portly posterior, but long for the positive reactions a bigger butt receives. They seek out the cheaper alternative, black market butt injections. These injections are normally done in a setting without any medical attention and performed ILLEGALLY by an unlicensed individual. As this procedure becomes a widespread phenomenon, in her new book, “Shot Girls” Vanity Wonder warns of the dangers associated with this popular enhancement alternative. Vanity Wonder sits downs with EGL correspondent, Kenneth Miles to tell her story.

How long did it take you to write it? It took me two years to write the book. The reason it took me two years is because this is not a book just about butt shots. It’s about a lot of missing pieces in myself. It’s a book about addiction. It’s a book about all of that. It took me two years to come to grips with everything I had to write. So tell us, what are some of the missing pieces of your life you think are responsible for this addiction?

“My experience with shots morphed and perverted itself into several different things and feelings.”

“In urban communities, everybody knows somebody who is getting it done. Everybody is getting it done.”

BEFORE

AFTER

Well, I found them in the process of writing this book. I got involved with a lot of [the wrong] people. You see a lot of girls grow up and they get involved with the wrong guys. Daughters that didn’t have father’s growing up tend to get involved with guys that aren’t really good. For me, I didn’t get involved with guys who weren’t good. I got involved with women…and not in a sexual way. I was looking for a mother figure who would love and care about me. That’s how I got involved with this whole shot life. Tell me about the ‘shot life.’ Let the EGL readers out there know exactly what it is. I can let you know as much as I can because a lot of that is in my book and I don’t want to give it away. Honestly, it’s a lot more widespread than anybody is going to say and everyone knows that. It really surprised me that a lot of people weren’t surprised. In urban communities, everybody knows somebody who is getting it done. Everybody is getting it done. Your grandmother is getting it done. Your mom is getting it done. Your aunt is getting it done. Your little sister is getting it done. It transcends any border you try to put it around. Why did you decide to get butt shots? The first time when I got it done, I got it done because I was just doing something. The second time I did it, it was pure competition because everybody was doing it. After that, it was like ‘Ok’ I’m getting a little attention. Let me go ahead and get a little more. Then, it got

infected. I’m like ‘Oh crap.” It looked terrible. So now I have to get it done again in order to make it look better. Now, I’m getting it done out of necessity. My necessity is turning into addiction. So, my experience with shots morphed and perverted itself into several different things and feelings. It’s like a disease. It morphed and changed into different things to make it immune to whatever you try to throw at it. The thing about addiction is I didn’t grow up in a house with a drinker, drug addict, a smoker, none of that. I grew up as a Jehovah Witness so I was sheltered from a lot of things especially addiction. I didn’t know what it was. I didn’t know what to look for. It turns out…I wouldn’t say that I had an addictive personality, but I was easily susceptible to addiction. So, have you sought help for your shot addiction? That hasn’t been an issue for a long time. I understand what the bigger picture is and the bigger picture is my kid. When you realize that what’s inside of you can be a ticking time bomb it really puts things into perspective. I call it the probability dice. People don’t understand [you could] get sick, die or get maimed. So every time you get injections you roll that probability dice to see if you are going to be in the group that’s going to be fine or in that group that gets sick. With this being illegal and being done in a hotel room, it’s not worth rolling that probability dice. When you go and get your boobs done or some botox from a board certified plastic surgeon that probability dice

is much smaller. Of course you have some people who are still going to get messed up, but it’s much smaller. It’s a sterile environment. It’s legal. There are things put in place. These doctors have insurance they have to pay to make sure their practice stays running. I’m smart enough now, but a lot of people have come out and said, ‘How dare you. You did this to your body!’ I’m not allowed to wisen up? Am I supposed to be condemned for the rest of my days? I’m not allowed to redeem myself? I’m not allowed to say that I did this stuff, but I don’t want your daughter doing it? These women want to be better than the next woman. It goes deeper than that with some. Some have daddy issues. Some have body issues. A lot of women look to the next woman and says she’s not going to get more attention than me. So, after getting multiple shots I’m sure you receive a lot of attention. How do you feel when people stare at you when you walk out in the streets? Before, it just pissed me off. Now, I don’t care. FEATURE/ROCK CANDY

MAKING MOVES Interview by Yandy Smith Composed by Aishlinn Mallory

“You don’t have to compromise anything to reach your dreams. I’ve been poor a lot longer than I’ve had money.” Summer is here and without further ado, EGL has fulfilled its promises. Our readers were polled to find out which sexy entertainer they would most like to see featured in our next Rock Candy, and here he is... BET’s “106 & Park’s” own Terrence J dished on his transition from music countdown host to acting roles on the big screen and television. Fans have watched Terrence blossom from the host of the popular program to starring in Stomp the Yard 2: Homecoming, Burlesque, and the fourth season of BET’s “The Game”. EGL’s very own Yandy Smith sat down with Terrence to get the scoop on upcoming projects as well as his love life.

BOYS

How has it been on the “106 & Park” set? Is that where you started? I know Rocsi was doing radio in her hometown. Is that where you pretty much started on the entertainment front or had you already had a background in that? I started interning for my first radio station when I was 15 years old in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. So, radio was my background as well. I went to college at North Carolina A&T and I worked for the on-campus radio station and the radio station in Greensboro, North Carolina. I have a Communications degree, so I always tried to do TV shows and stuff while I was in school. So, that’s always kind of been my aspiration. When I graduated from college, I auditioned for a bunch of stuff and wasn’t getting anything. So, that was kind of the transition period I was going through post college. Do you feel like 106 & Park” fulfilled your career expectations? Oh yeah, absolutely! You know, “106 & Park” was one of the biggest blessings in my life because it’s such a learning curve. I always say that it’s been able to give me great relationships with people and I’ve been able to see careers. Like, I’ve been able to see these guys with the biggest hit records in the world mismanage their money and squander it all. Or, you have the biggest movie, but because you don’t build the right relationships you’re not able to really get your career where you want it to go. So, just being there for seven years and getting to watch everybody and meet everybody has been a blessing, cause now I hopefully can escape some of the hurdles that I’ve witnessed during my career at “106

& Park”. And it’s a fun job you know. I love music. I love people. Now you’re branching out and doing movies. That’s amazing! How was it being a part of Steve Harvey’s successful movie Think Like a Man; which dominated the number one spot for a few weeks in theatres. I absolutely loved the movie. Will Packer from Sony Screen Gems is the producer and he did Stomp the Yard, Obsessed. He does some dope films. My character Michael is a mama’s boy and you see the growth of my character throughout this movie. It was a lot of fun because I got to work with people like Kevin Hart, Michael Ealy, Taraji P. Henson, Gabrielle Union, and La La. I mean, it’s just a dope cast and it was so much fun.

“Just being at (106th & Park) for seven years and getting to watch everybody and meet everybody has been a blessing!” Have you always aspired to be an actor or is this something that you kind of fell into? You know, I’ve always loved entertainment. But, I never knew where my place would be. I can’t rap and I can’t sing, so I never knew where I could fit. Acting has always been something I wanted to do. But, it just seemed so big and so far and so out of reach. I never even thought that I could do it, because it was so big. So, every single day now I’m just able

to live my dreams. Like, I’m really a happy person and enjoying myself. I follow you on Twitter and I can tell by your tweets that you’re just in a great space and that’s a good place to be in. So, are you still doing a recurring role on BET’s “The Game”? I had to make a decision this year, you know with the film coming out. I can’t leave “106 & Park” but for so much time. So, to do “The Game” and do the movie, I had to do one or the other. But, I would love to go back. I loved working on “The Game”, and hopefully the next season, if schedule permits, I can go back and join the cast again. I would love to. Right! We would love to see you back on the show. You did a great job. So, has the film industry welcomed you with open arms? Like for us on the music side, when artists transfer over to films, it’s hard to break down those walls. Everyone’s like, ‘here goes another rapper turned actress.’ You know, did they embrace you or was it kind of an obstacle? I don’t think I’ve been embraced with open arms in anything I’ve ever done in my life. You know, it’s especially hard when you’re a host trying to make the transition because people see you every single day and they just associate you with one thing and don’t want to consider your other talents or your other aspirations. It was especially hard. Like, I might have gone out on a hundred auditions. The people that are successful in this industry are those that have thick skin and those that are extremely persistent and don’t get offended when they’re told no. I can be told no. It doesn’t faze me one bit…I just keep going. Con’i on next page

Yep. That’s the key. Are there any future roles you can discuss? Please, do share! I have a small role in Sparkle, which comes out this August. It was exciting being on set. I got to meet Whitney Houston! You know, that was devastating when we lost her. I’ve always been a fan of hers, so at least I got to meet her; which was always a goal. But, Sparkle comes out next and then I have another film called Battle of the Year, starring Laz Alonso, Chris Brown, and Josh Holloway from “Lost”. It’s the first 3D b-boying dance movie and we shot it in France. So, it’s a big 3D budget and I think people are gonna love it. That movie is gonna be a lot of fun. I cannot wait to see that! One of my celebrity crushes is in it but, I will never share who that is. [Laughs] But, that’s great. Congratulations on all of that! So, we put the feelers out there of who are readers wanted our next Rock Candy guy to be and got an overwhelming amount of requests for you. Oh, wow! You’re a guy that Every Girl Loves! Now the question the ladies want answered is, are you involved? Uh, yes. I’m involved and very happy! That’s beautiful! Do you find it difficult to maintain a long-term relationship while you’re in this industry? Yeah, I think it has its complexities. But, I think with the right level of maturity you can make it work, you know. Absolutely! So, the EGL girl is beautiful, sexy, independent, successful, and family-oriented. What’s your type of girl and does she possess those qualities? I like a complete woman who’s confident and knows who she is. One of the things I hate is when people say ‘you complete me’. Like, I know it’s a great line. But, I feel like in order for a re-

lationship to work it needs to be two complete people that know who they are and that bring things to the table in order for it to work. You look at powerful couples like Will and Jada, Michelle and Barack, and Jay-Z and Beyonce. These are complete solid people in their own right and when they got together it’s something even bigger. It’s magic. I’m not saying you have to be the President or an international superstar. What I’m saying is if you’re dealing with your own insecurities and you’re not complete as your own person, then that’s where a lot of relationship issues will come into play. You’ll be insecure and bring that energy to the person that you’re dating. As long as a woman is herself and is confident and complete, then I think a relationship can work. I completely agree. Do you think a woman can be independent and successful and still be a great wife and a great mother, or do you think one has to be sacrificed for the other? Oh, absolutely! I think you can do both. That’s what Think Like a Man talks about. Like, Taraji and Meagan’s characters. All of the females in this movie are successful and it shows how they are able to balance their relationships along with their level of success. But to answer your question, I think it can be done. My mom was able to do it. I’ve seen it done first hand and she’s been married now for 27 years and she’s always done well in her career. So, I know it can be done. Wow! That’s a beautiful thing. Is there one thing you want our readers to know about you? Not necessarily on a relationship tip, just about who you are, what you do, what you aspire? You don’t have to compromise anything to reach your dreams. You can be yourself. You know, I’ve been poor a lot longer than I’ve had money. To this day I’ll go shop at a T.J. Maxx or a Marshalls. I was just in Target earlier today and I have no shame. I’ll go shop in Wal-Mart and I love it. For me, people say what they’re gonna say and I smile. I don’t sell drugs and I don’t wear any

chains and I’m not a tough guy. I just work really hard and the reason I’ve been able to win is not because I had contacts and relationships in the game, or because I was born with a bunch of money or I did anything to hurt anybody. I built my career off of positive energy. I like to be that alternative. I went to college and I studied hard and I have a degree in Communications and I’ve been a nerd my whole life. I was student body president. If you are true to yourself you’ll still be able to accomplish all your goals. Now, I still have everything I ever wanted in life and more and that’s because I never compromised and I just believed in God. And because you’ve applied yourself and you’re known to work hard. And like you said, you definitely have a belief in God and you’re faithful. Yeah, God has always been there spearheading me. I just want to tell people just be yourself and never give up. You’ll be able to accomplish whatever you want to accomplish.

“I don’t think I’ve been embraced with open arms in anything I’ve ever done in my life.”

SUCCESS STORY Just 5-years-ago, bestselling author Wahida Clark “The Queen of Thug Love Fiction,” was completing a 10 year bid for a white collar crime that seemed like a never-ending nightmare. Yet the novelist penned a list of her dreams while in prison, realizing that she had two daughters to take care of and a calling that was much greater than a 9 by 5 foot prison cell. She decided that her legal hustle would begin in prison, not knowing that she would blow life into a “thug life” genre that would ignite the world of urban fiction as we know it. After walking away from the deep darkness of her past, Clark has transformed her life of crime to selling more than 650,000 books, and then snagging a national publishing deal with Baby’s Cash Money Content. Wahida Clark sat down with author Brandi Forte and had a sisterly conversation on ambition, having a plan and why there is room for new writer’s to become successful. Relax, it’s an open book.

QUEEN OF THUG LOVE FICTION

WAHIDA CLARK

TALKS ABOUT SUCCESS AFTER PRISON AND WHY “THUG LIFE” WINS By Brandi Forte

Peace Wahida, I am so happy that you made it to Mary-land. “Payback” just dropped, you have sold almost one million books, are you scared of success? No not at all. When I was in prison I knew that I would write novels. That was my plan and I knew if I stuck to my plan that all would work out. In prison alone I wrote 7 novels. WOW! So what took place to land you 10-years in prison? I was living in Atlanta, making good money and I had a good job. I got caught up in a situation that went down with the company that I was working for. I received a subpoena. I decided to go to trial. I got my sentence and it was like I was in a state a shock. I couldn’t believe it. I was thinking that I could go home and plan things out for me and my daughters.

Any human being would be in a state of shock, especially a woman. Was being sentenced surreal? Yes and it was like I didn’t even have time to say good-bye to my daughters. The same day I got sentenced was the same day I began serving time. It hurt me so bad that I couldn’t talk to my daughters. Where were your daughters during this time period? In Jersey with my family. The crazy thing was that when I was going to prison my husband was coming out. They lost one parent, but gained another. Was your husband a thug? (Loud laughter) Yes he was. He was it all.

How did you decide that you would write Thug Fiction? I wanted to write books that people would buy, they would read, the books would sell and there was a market for it. No one was writing Thug Fiction at the time. My books mirror my life growing up in that lifestyle while living in New Jersey. Fast-forward, you now have how many books under your belt? I have 12 published books which includes my new book “Payback Ain’t Enough” which was released in April. I also have my own publishing company, which is the home to 14 authors. The company is doing well. My goal is to sell more than one million books. What is your experience being an author with Cash Money Content? It’s great. It is a family. They treat me like a sister. They have a New York office that I do go to. But with technology, we communicate well. I understand that you are really an advocate for prison reform. Tell me more about your community service endeavors. Every month I have programs specifically for juveniles and ex-offenders. I share my story at speaking engagements at juvenile facilities in hopes that it will help someone else and bring hope to their lives. I am the Vice President of Prodigal Sons and Daughters Redirection Services, a re-entry program for ex-offenders in Jersey. I am very much a part of the prison reform movement. Speaking of hope, what word of advice can you offer to young aspiring writers? Write your dreams down and hustle hard. There is room, you just have to find your niche and don’t stop! She is the founder of Amala Lives, a community based organization in Washington, D.C. that provides innovative mentoring programs to adjudicated youth and at-risk females. BEING FASHIONABLE

Platform Sandals

Summer and Sandals By Nicole Goodnight

With the summer being near, our fashion sense takes on a whole new journey. We are ready for fresh, clean and colorful looks. During the summer we frequently attend cookouts, picnics, festivals and of course the beach! With the weather being extremely hot, this takes away from the amount of fabrics that we wear, which is why the summer is the season for sun and sandals. Our sandals usually become the focal point of our wardrobe because of the lack of pieces that we may have on. A hot pair of wedges and eye-popping platforms makes a huge difference to a pair of jean shorts or a solid color maxi dress. There are shades of sandals that come in all different styles and shapes and made to fit every look that we are trying to achieve. Let’s take a look at this summer’s hottest sandal and shade trends.

What girl doesn’t want some height and comfort? Platform’s give you a little bit of both while still remaining sexy. This chic 1970’s inspired look is very popular this season. It is a wonderful day look, while still having enough comfort to transition into the night scene.

Cork Wedge I know you’re thinking cork is only for wine, but that’s not true. A classic cork wedge is always a wonderful and fun look for a summer shoe. Cork wedges also give a natural look and pair great with most colors.

Gladiator This look has been going strong for the past 3 years now. This flat sandal gives comfort, simplicity, while still remaining sexy. They come in plain styles and can also be bedazzled with gems, rhinestones and even a small heel to give it more of a dressy look. Gladiator sandals tend to be lower in price and also more of an everyday wear.

THE FABULOUS LIFE

CELEBRITY MOMS By Tahajah Samuels

Ditching public and high maintenance personas, celebrity moms are carrying what seems to be the hottest accessory of this season: babies. We see more and more of our favorite female celebrities opting to carry their precious infants with them everywhere in lieu of that latest new Birken bag. From within the womb, mommy is usually the first person baby develops an undeniable bond with. So of course, it makes total sense for that strong tie to progress after birth. We love to catch flicks of these various dynamic duos. Whether walking down the streets of NYC, catching a cool breeze in Los Angeles, or shopping in ATL, celebrity moms love to keep their babies close to them. Notorious for this are actresses, Tia Mowry, singer-rocker, Pink, and America’s sweetheart, Sandra Bullock. In early January, hip-hop and R&B royalty welcomed their heir to the throne, Blue Ivy Carter. From the moment Beyoncé and her mini-me took the New York City street scene, baby Blue was literally attached to her superstar mommy. Carried in the popular Baby Bjorn, Bey and Blue are always dressed ohso-cute.

Other celebrity moms who follow suit with baby accessorizing are Victoria “Posh” Beckham, Alicia Keys, Kourtney Kardashian, Mariah Carey, and Christina Milian just to name a few. With newfound moms like former-Disney star, Hilary Duff, Jessica Simpson, and Miranda Kerr, we can assure that they will soon take part in the new accessory trend. Motherhood is a part of life. And for most, it is the ultimate achievement. We can’t blame these moms for wanting their adorable babies with them every second of the day; these tiny little people captivate minds and melt hearts. Keep on accessorizing ladies!

DONNA SUMMER

AN ICON

On May 17th, music fans were surprised to learn that we had lost another one of our beloved musical treasures, Donna Summer. Born LaDonna Adrian Gaines, Summer was more than just the ‘Queen of Disco’ (as Beyonce penned in an open letter). Growing up in Boston, she began her musical career in the mid-70’s and was well-known for hits like “Love To Love You Baby”, “Hot Stuff”, “Bad Girls”, “She Works Hard For the Money” and a ton of other chart-topping songs. And while these are classics, there are a ton of recent remakes that she’s left her imprint on. From rappers like Nas to megastars like Beyonce, our generation has appreciated and sampled some of her best work. In no particular order, here are three of our favorite sampled Donna Summer songs. • Ne-Yo, “She Got Her Own” was sampled from Summer’s 1979 song “My Baby Understands.” The official remix entitled “She Got Her Own” (Miss Independent Part 2) was released as a single for Ne-Yo and Jamie Foxx and Fabolous. It samples the 1979 song “My Baby Understands” byDonna Summer.

• Beyonce, “Naughty Girl” was sampled from Summer’s 1975 song “Love To Love You Baby.” Beyonce’s version was featured on her first studio album, Dangerously in Love (2003) and was the fourth and final single from that album. • Nas, “Street Glory” was sampled from Summer’s “Once Upon A Time.” Nas’ version was on his 2000 compilation album, Nas and Ill Will Records Present QB’s Finest is a 2000 compilation album. Although Donna Summer left this earth at the age of 63, she’s left us with a lifetime of musical memories. Rest in Peace! “GOD HAD to create disco music so I could be born and be successful.” Donna Summer [Jasmine Brand runs theJasmineBrand. com, an entertainment blog that covers the latest in celebrity news, music and fashion. THROWING A GREAT PARTY

ENGAGEMENT: Now Whats Next? By Lauren Beamon Elle’s Couture Events

There are many details to consider when planning an engagement party. The date, guest list, venue, invitations and menu are all very important aspects of the planning process. Traditionally, one of the first things the mother of the bride does is put together an engagement party to celebrate the good news with the rest the family and close friends. However, engagement parties are not as prevalent as they once were as many couples see it as an unnecessary formality, and added expense. Although, it is a nice way to set things off on the track before you buckle down with wedding planning. Recently I had the pleasure of planning a surprise engagement for a wonderful couple. Hopefully the below tips will help you plan your engagement party with ease. Let the planning commence!

Setting an Engagement Party Date

Engagement parties usually occur a month or two after the engagement, but it really depends on the length of the engagement. Usually, it’s planned more than 6 months prior to the wedding. The purpose of an engagement party is to celebrate the engagement, not to announce it. It also provides a way for the bride’s family to meet members of the groom’s family, and vice versa. If there is less than 6 months between the engagement and the wedding, it might be best to host a very informal party or to forgo the engagement party altogether to avoid overloading guests, and yourself!

Guest List & Invitations

Traditionally, the size of your wedding guest list as well as the size of the party location determines how many guests can attend. Currently, most people invite close family and friends, which keeps the party low key and low cost. In terms of invitations, you can be formal or informal. You can’t go wrong either way. Be sure to base your invitation on your overall feeling and theme. This way you inform your guest on how to dress accordingly. Of course be sure to include all the necessary information such as Date, Time and Location.

Where to Have an Engagement Party

Usually, engagement parties are a relatively formal affair held at home or a venue with some music or entertainment where appetizers or hors d’oeuvres are often served as guests mingle. However, today’s couples choose to host a casual backyard barbeque or have a gathering at a local restaurant. Others throw their engagement party at a restaurant or art gallery. The location possibilities are endless; it’s really up to the couple.

Engagement Party Gifts

Gifts are not really encouraged, but are not discouraged either. Chances are many guests will not be sure what the protocol is for gift-giving, so decide how you’d like to handle it and consider adding a small statement like, “No gifts” or “Gifts are optional” to the bottom of the invitation. Your guests will thank you for letting them know what is expected of them.

Food & Dessert

Of course you and your fiancé are off the hook when it comes to cooking for your guest. I suggest hiring a caterer, picking up food from your favorite restaurant or enlisting friends/family. The proper etiquette is to hire a carter or have your parents handle the food arrangements. For desserts, head to your favorite bakery. If you don’t have one, locate a few local bakeries and set up an appointment for a tasting. Desserts can be expensive especially if you order a custom creation. Save the over the top cake for the wedding. Keep cost low and get a simple cake or an array of desserts.

Decorations & Entertainment

Let your theme or color scheme dictate the overall décor and design of your event. If you’re throwing a BBQ- think plaid prints, picnic tables, hurricane lanterns, and hay stacks for seating or décor props. If you don’t want a theme, pick your favorite colors. Incorporate these colors with your linen choice and flowers etc. Whatever you choose, make sure to include personal touches and elements. Entertainment can be kept pretty simple. Background music is really all you need. However, this can also vary based on the venue and your personal taste. Favors are optional, but they are nice touch. Do something simple like cupcakes or candles. Photo Credits: Patrick Neree Photography Event Credit: Elle’s Couture Wedding & Events

Don’t Get Burned This Summer By Regina Pearman

LOOKING HER BEST Summer is upon us. It’s time to spark up the grill, relax with family and friends, and watch the fireworks. Naturally, for many of us summer means spending more time outside. While a nice summer day can bring joy to our minds, bodies and souls, the strong UVA and UVB rays produced by the sun during the summer months can wreak havoc on our skin. It is important to protect your skin when you are out in the sun and by taking proper precautions, you can have “glowgeous” skin all summer long. Here is a list of EGL’s top 5 things to remember about the sun and sun protection during the summer: 1.) Remember Melanin Alone Does Not Protect You From Skin Cancer According to the National Cancer Institute’s website, a common misconception amongst African Americans is that the melanin in our skin protects us from harsh UVA and UVB rays produced by the sun. While skin cancer is less common in African Americans, some risks for skin cancer still exists and unfortunately we are not diagnosed until skin cancer is in its more advanced stages. 2.) Choose a Sun Protection Product that Provides UVA and UVB Coverage Remember, UVA rays are the rays from the sun that cause aging. UVA rays penetrate the skin and are present year round (that is why you should wear sun protection all year, not just during the summer months). UVB rays are the rays that cause burning. Broad-spectrum sun protection offers protection from both UVA and UVB rays.

3.) SPF Stands for Sun Protection Factor SPF indicates how long it takes for UVB rays to cause burning on the skin. A sunscreen with SPF 30 for example, will protect the skin against 30 times the exposure of UVB rays than if you weren’t wearing any sunscreen at all. The American Academy of Dermatology suggests applying a sun protection with a minimum of SPF 30 to exposed skin on the lips, face and body. 4.) Chemical and Physical Protection Sun protection has chemical absorbers that absorbs UV radiation and turns it into a less dangerous form of radiation that causes less damage to the skin. Sun protection falls into two categories. Chemical sunscreens are usually colorless (think ingredients like octinoxate and homosalate). Physical sunscreens are generally pasty and white (think titanium dioxide and zinc oxide). If you are ingredient cautious beware of products that contain oxybenzone, a product that some believe can disturb hormones. 5.) New FDA Standards The FDA is making changes to the way cosmetic companies market sun protection: 1.) Manufacturers will have to disclose the levels of UVA and UVB protection directly on the label, 2.) products will have to be marketed as water resistant, and 3.) must clearly indicate how often they should be applied.

Fabulous Summer Hair

By Monique McCullough

LOOKING HER BEST Want to have amazing hair that last well through Labor Day? Then protective styling and moisturizing need to be your top priorities starting now. Why are they so important you ask? Without these cornerstones your hair will be as dry and brittle as the Sahara by the time you retire your summer whites. Sun, heat and humidity see no race, color or creed. Weather you have relaxed or natural hair, are Black, White, Latina or other, the summer reeks havoc on our tresses. But with a few preventative measures we can take proper care of them.

What’s a girl (or guy) to do? Protective styles: • Whenever possible keep the ends of your hair pinned and tucked in. Stylish buns and up-do’s are perfect for a day at the office or a night on the town! So grab you favorite scrunchie, pins and products and Do-It-Up! • If you’re a Naturalista you may want to look into cornrow, double strand, mini or micro twists. They can last you from 2 to 6 weeks depending on how you care for them. There are tons of tutorials by great women (and men) with loc’s and natural styles like Franchesca Leigh on YouTube or Black Girl Long Hair in the blogosphere. Check them out if you need inspiration. • Rockin’ a full on luxurious weave or lace front wig? If properly maintained they can make great protective styles for your hair too. Just don’t neglect the hair underneath or your scalp. Make sure to wash and deep condition weekly. • Trendy hair accessories add versatility to your look, so invest in some colorful flowers or hair jewels for some summer sizzle. • Moisturize, moisturize, MOISTURIZE!!! I cannot say this enough. Moisturize from the inside by drinking plenty of H20. This is one of the best things you can do for your whole body. Getting plenty of water promotes healthy skin, hair and nails. But let’s get back to the hair talk. You need to find products that provide maximum benefit with minimum effort. They should hydrate without weighing your hair down. If your hair is short you may be limited in style choices, but not on moisture and hair protection. Moisturize daily and use quality Hot Oil Treatments and Leave-In Conditioners. They will do wonders to quench your thirsty hair. There are tons and tons of products on the market for you to choose from. Raid your girlfriends’ medicine cabinet or join a hair forum so you can get up to date info and find out what’s best for your hair. • If you’re looking for natural products, read the labels and select products made with Shea, Coconut, Hemp Seed and Olive oils. These Oils have natural SPF in them and will help protect your hair from the harsher sunrays. The choices are endless. Stay educated. BEING INFORMED News Rundown

NEWS AT HOME As the world sits in anticipation for the Presidential Election of 2012, President Obama and his administration are hard at work. Several new strategies have been unveiled as America decides who will win their vote on Election Day 2012. U.S. REVEALS NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH AFRICA- The White House has announced a new plan that might help the struggling U.S. economy. A partnership with sub-Saharan Africa was announced to increase trade and investment. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton calls Africa a “land of opportunity.” She believes that Africa offers the highest rate of return on foreign direct investment of any developing region in the world. The new strategy does not indicate exactly how different it is from the current Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which focuses on free elections and markets. YOUNG MIGRANTS WILL NOT FACE DEPORTATION- News of President Obama’s ruling to end the deportation of illegal immigrants who came to the United States between the ages of 16 and 30, came as shock to some American citizens. In addition, the new initiative requires the immigrants to have arrived in the U.S. before the age of 16, lived in the U.S. for five years, currently enrolled as students, graduated from high school, honorably discharged veterans of the military, and be under 30 years old. For some, the news was a victory worth celebrating. The National Council of La Raza, a dominant Hispanic group, described the announcement as sensible good news. But, Republican GOP Candidate Mitt Romney suggests the decision will add to an already complicated issue and should be dealt with through legislation. Mr. Romney believes that the status of young people who come to the United States through no fault of their own is an important matter to be considered and it should be solved on a long-term basis, so they know what their future will be in this country.

America will be paying close attention to all new strategies released by the White House Administration as Election Day 2012 vastly approaches.

RODNEY KING TRAGICALLY FOUND DEAD at 47- The man at the center of the Los Angeles riots of 1992 is found dead at the bottom of his swimming pool at the age of 47. Many of us recall the 1991 beating of Rodney King by four Los Angeles police officers. In March of 1991, King and two passengers were driving home after drinking with friends when a police car proceeded to follow them. King, who was on parole for a robbery conviction, began to panic because he was scared of going back to prison. The negative reputation of the LAPD led King to end the pursuit in a heavily populated apartment complex. But, what happened next would go down in history and be remembered for a lifetime. The subsequent actions seemed routine when the two passengers were apprehended and placed in the patrol car. This traffic stop took a turn for the worse when King was nearly beaten to death. A year later, four officers were acquitted of the incident, provoking a six day deadly riot in South Central L.A. Approximately 53 people were killed and as many as 2,000 were injured. King made it clear in several recent interviews that he has forgiven the officers that almost cost him his life. Now, twenty years later, we mourn the loss of a figure who’s unfortunate run in played a major part in bringing to light unethical actions of the LAPD. An autopsy and toxicology report will help determine the cause of death, as no signs of drug or alcohol use were evident.
