The Basics

There are a few basic products that everywoman should have in their skin care regimen regardless of age, skin type or skin tone. They include...

Cleanser Designed for daily use, cleansers come in many forms (face washes, lotions and creams) and should be used twice a day; once in the morning and again in the evening before bed. • A face wash is normally a foaming cleanser good for individuals with oily or combination skin. • Cleansing lotions are water-based emulsion for normal and combination skin. • Milky cleansers that contain more oil are recommended for dry skin. • Cleansing creams are oil based emulsion used to dissolve makeup and dirt; they are good for dry and mature skins.

Exfoliate Designed for daily or weekly use, exfoliation is the process of removing dead cells off the skin and includes physical, chemical and enzymatic exfoliates. • Physical exfoliation- is just that, the use of a scrub or other product, which you use in a rubbing motion to remove dead cells of the skin. • Chemical exfoliation is the use of a chemical agent to dissolves dead skin cells. • Enzyme peels are exfoliating creams that are beneficial for softening oily, clogged, dry and dehydrated skin.

Masks Masks can be used daily or weekly to treat a variety of skin conditions like dehydration or hyper-pigmentation. They also aid in brightening and lifting the skin.

Toners Toners are generally applied just before moisturizing and are used to restore the pH balance of the skin after cleansing or treatments.

Serums Serums are applied under moisturizer and are formulated with smaller molecules to penetrate deeper into the skin, and thus are extremely effective in delivering vitamins, lipids, or antioxidants to the skin. Some serums are used during the day to help tighten and brighten, while others are used over night to heal and repair.

Moisturizers/sunscreen Moisturizers with sunscreen added must be used daily to moisturize and protect the skin from harmful sun rays. everythinggirlslove.com

20’s

Beauty

The Twenties

The 20’s represent a time for most women when there are very little visible signs of aging. At this age, insufficient sleep and overindulgence is not likely to have any major effect on the skin. Due to this fact many young women tend to neglect their skin. However, your 20’s are the perfect time to begin preventative regiments that will help you maintain that youthful look.

Product Picks One question that always comes up for newbies in skin care is “Should I use/buy products that are all within the same line”? Well, the answer is... “It depends”. Product interactions among different lines may vary and most product lines are designed to work together. However a skin care professional that works with many different lines is usually skilled in knowing which products interact well with each other. So when doubt stick to the same line or consult a professional.

• Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser Kiehl’s products work very well on all skin types. The brand is natural and easy on the skin. They carry a wide variety of eye creams, lotions and cleansers. The Ultra Facial Cleanser is safe for all skin types, and helps break down surface dirt and oil. $20, kiehls.com

40’s The Forties

Characterized by hormonal changes, fine lines, and sagging skin. Lifestyle choices are catching up with your skin in the forties. Smoking, stress, and low physical activity are all starting to show on the skin. Many women in this age bracket are either in maintenance or corrective mode at this point. If you had a strong regimen in your thirties you may be able to sail through your forties with awesome skin. If you are just getting started you may have to go with a corrective line to help improve the appearance of the skin. Dermal fillers and advanced peels may also be an option to correct and improve the skin.

• The Youth As We Know It Cleanser Light anti-aging cleanser that is packed with an anti-aging cocktail to fight fine lines and wrinkles. $30, blissworld.com

Beauty

The Necessary Extras • Remove your makeup before bed. Leaving your makeup on overnight cause’s serious dirt and oil build up that can rigorously clog your pores. • Drink water Not only does water hydrate the body, but it hydrates the skin as well. Your normal water intake should be 8 glasses a day but it can be difficult to hit this mark daily. You can get bored drinking water and it can make you feel full really quickly. Try adding lemons or cucumbers to your water and eat fruit. Most fruits contain about 70% or more water. • Change your pillow case It’s recommended that you change your pillow case weekly to avoid build up. Dirt and oil, dead skin cells, makeup, hair products etc., it all stays on your pillowcase and will clog your pores. • Cleanse after you sweat Whether you had a sweaty workout, day in the sun, or major hot flashes it is important to cleanse your skin as quickly and thoroughly as possible. The longer sweat sits on the skin, the more prone you are to acne and other breakouts. • Do not over wash The feeling of fresh clean skin can be addictive. However, you should try to steer clear of washing repeatedly. Your skin benefits from its natural oils, so don’t exceed two washes a day. everythinggirlslove.com

DON’T BELIEVE THE HYPE! You think you know, but you have no idea By Chey Parker

When talking about the female rap game, you can’t help but to talk about Brittnay Carpentero. You may know her as Diamond or Ms. 32 Flavors, the fire-spitting girl in the hit rap group Crime Mob. Now an independent artist making her own mark in the rap game, Diamond continues to release hot music and build her brand, letting all the haters know that she isn’t going anywhere! EGL’s Chey Parker chopped it up with Diamond and got the real 411 on why she didn’t respond to the Love & Hip Hop Atlanta drama, current endeavors and her response to all the rumors and naysayers!

January 2013 • everythinggirlslove.com

Cover Story

So you’re comfortable with your decision of not being a part of the show last season? Yes ma’am I was. I’m a strong believer that once you make your mind up about something, you just have to go with it. If it was the wrong decision at least you learned from it. If you don’t make a decision and just sit in the middle, then you don’t stand for anything. I don’t regret my decision and everything’s good. What initially inspired you to do music? I have four sisters but my closest sister in age is 5 years older than me, and I always wanted to do everything she did. She was in a rap group and I was into poetry. One day she told me, ‘you know poetry isn’t too far from rappin’, and she kind of helped me with words. That was my first time being exposed to it. We played with words and melodies for about an hour and half or so. After that, I got frustrated and left it alone until about 4 years later. Three years after that, I started getting into it with Crime Mob, knocking out songs after school and on the weekends. We would just record songs and I just began to fall in love with it more and more. With you being so young and everything happening so fast, how did it affect your life? It was bittersweet because I had to leave my life behind. I had friends. I had a boyfriend. I still kept my boyfriend, but it wasn’t the same. I never went to my actual prom.

When Knuck if you Buck first came out it was my 9th grade year and that summer I had just auditioned to be on the drill team and I made it girl! I made the team. I was so happy! The same day I was supposed to be there, we shot the video for Knuck if You Buck and I had to make a decision. Was I going back to school to live a regular life like everybody else? Or was I going to do this music? I had to make a choice and never look back. Do you think it will ever be a reunion album? I think that will happen one day. We’re still young; that’s the blessing about it. We were 14, 15 and 16. Now everybody is 24, 25, 26, so you never know what might happen in the next couple of years. How do you feel about the current state of your career right? I never really had a voice. Now, I can make my own decisions. When I was in the group, it was about being a number and we had to vote. It was six people so if all six agreed, that’s what we rolled with. If the group members didn’t think your verse was hard enough then you couldn’t be on the song. Now, I make my own decisions. It’s a blessing, but at the same time it can be a curse because when you’re solo [and] you fuck up, people look at it as Diamond fucked up. It’s not 6 group members anymore. It has its times, but shit … I don’t have to split the money 6 ways no more. What’s that one thing you think has allowed you to be as successful as you are? Mainly keeping God first and having a wonderful family, a wonderful support system. I have wonderful parents, wonderful sisters, wonderful brothers, and now I have

I’m a strong believer that once you make your mind up about something, you just have to go with it.

I know you’ve answered this question a thousand times; but to clear it up, will you be joining the 2nd season of Love & Hip Hop ATL? I have answered that question a million times, but I will answer it again… I won’t.

Cover Story is about falling “ Life down and getting back up so unless I lose my voice or I’m a vegetable, I’m not going to stop.

a wonderful team and I think me being persistent. It’s only so much they can do if I’m the main key to the program. So I think just them seeing my drive; I dust myself off and I get back up and that makes them want to go harder for me. Life is about falling down and getting back up so unless I lose my voice or I’m a vegetable, I’m not going to stop. I think that’s what got me this far. 10 years strong. What are you working on right now? Right now, we just launched the Secret Kisses ad. I’m the new face of that, I love it! My favorite lipstick is red, which is Seductive. There’s between 36 and 38 [products] from lip balm to lipstick in different shades and colors. I don’t see how a woman can get bored! So I’m excited about partnering up with them and helping the brand. We just shot the video for “Clap for me” and were going to be dropping that in two weeks. I got a new deal as well, but we aren’t going to say who it’s with yet... I’m about to do it big boom boom bang! I’m just ready to drop this album finally girl! It’s what everybody’s been waiting on! What was the process behind the album? What’s different between this album and your mix tapes? Well I think for me, they’re (Mix tapes) are like street LP’s to show people how far my strength is so when my album comes out they can see it in full circle. We’re going to have the hood shit, the dancing records for the ladies, and the radio- friendly singles. But doing what we did be-

fore, I had to learn [that] you got to open up. People have to be able to relate to you. I think that has been the hardest part and the best part because after I rap and get something off my chest, it makes me feel better. It’s therapeutic. Everybody will know who Brittnay Carpentreo slash Diamond is. It will be fun, you know very fashionable, very confident. The same sassy shit y’all love me for but at the same time, you’re going to get some of that grownand-sexy this-is-where-I am-now type records. Everybody knows about your relationship with Soulja Boy. With both of you guys being artists, what holds you two together? Well, I’m single; but the relationship as far as me and him, we’re best friends so I think that’s what keeps us so balanced. I learned a lot from him and he learned a lot for me. It’s about seeing each other do well and do great and it’s about give and take. Our foundation is that we’re really, really good friends, he’s a good person. A lot of artists shy away from going public with their relationships, why did you decide to put your relationship on Instagram for everyone to see? It was already out there. If I’m with somebody and we’re on that level that’s what it is; I’m not going to hide it and not live my life. Whatever they see me doing that is what I’m doing, I’m real. If I’m with this person and I feel like taking a picture that’s what I’m gonna do.

Is there anything that you would like to clear up? Any misconceptions of what people might think of you… I’m not a home wrecker. I’m wifey material; and a man that has me on his arm would love to wife me up because I’m a wonderful person and I’m down for whoever I’m with and whatever comes with them. If I love you and I’m rolling with you in a relationship, whatever bad and good I take on. And the tattoo that’s going around, that’s not my ass. I wouldn’t get a Chanel [logo] tattooed on my ass and if it was me I would say it was me and be like so fucking what! I’m in a process of getting tattoos removed actually, because I feel like I have too many and where I’m trying to go I don’t need all these tattoos. So tell me something about yourself that people wouldn’t expect? I’m a very kind-hearted person. I would take the shirt off my back to cloth someone else. I would give them my last. I’m like a mommy. I’m younger than everybody else, but I’m always like “are you ok? Anything you need?” I’m like the caretaker and I fix problems. I just want people to be right and comfortable and kick back and enjoy themselves.

a home wrecker! “ I’mI’mnot wifey material and a man that has me on his arm would love to wife me up.

People are constantly taking shots at you and you always seem to not counterattack, what makes you not entertain the negativity? The truth is gonna come out. You can’t hide the truth. It’s only a matter of time. It’s not for me to do, it’s for God to reveal when the opportunity presents itself and I get that green light to speak my truth. I know what happened, I know who I am and I don’t need to keep going back and forth. Why waste my time and my energy when I can put that focus on my career or taking care of my family or bettering me? That’s not going to do nothing but distract me and deter me from where I’m trying to go. So when I get to that point to where it can be told and it WILL be told, the truth is gonna set me free. I have too much to lose

If you can go back in time and change anything about your life, your career what would it be and why? Everything that has happened to me has been a learning experience; good and bad, and it only helped me for the better. I wouldn’t change anything. Any resolutions for 2013? Try not to worry too much. I worried a lot about cleaning my image up. I know I’m not a bad person and when you let that burden go of not being so worried then you can really tap into things that you need to tap into, like what makes you happy. This year, I got more into the word and as long as I know who I am and God knows who I am, I don’t really care We were pleasantly surprised and very impressed with Diamond’s maturity, intelligence, drive and business sense. With such a positive outlook on life, we are more than confidant that diamond is destined for greatness.

EGL’s Reality TV Star of the Year: Nene Leakes Nene Leakes is “VERY RICH” and that’s why she’s EGL’s Reality TV Star of the Year! Nene came from humble beginnings but has transformed herself into an actress, entrepreneur and a socialite. EGL’s Artist of the Year: Rihanna Bad girl Rhi-Rhi has definitely been doing her thing for years, but she turned it up for 2012! This year, Rihanna has been all laughter and joyous smiles, remaining unphased by the consistent gossip. The self proclaimed bad girl embarked on her 777 tour (7 cities, 7 shows, in 7days) celebrating the release of her seventh studio album, “Unapologetic”; in which earned the pop star her very first No.1 album in the USA, and 12th No. 1 single for “Diamonds” simultaneously. Aside from her musical accomplishments, in 2012 she was also considered GQ Magazine’s “Obsession of the Year”, she shutdown the Victoria’s Secret fashion show, solidified her role as a fashion diva and launched her third fragrance, Nude. Rihanna shouldn’t be considered anything less than AMA-ZING; she is beautiful, talented and her work ethics are out of this world! She connects with her fans and acknowledges that she is not perfect (although we beg to differ). She embraces her flaws and absolutely loves to please her fans. Rihanna is UNSTOPABLE! EGL appoints princess Rhi-Rhi as “artist of the year” because she is definitely shinning bright like a Diamond!

Gabrielle Douglas

EGL’s Athlete of the Year: Gabrielle “Gabby” Douglas During this year’s Summer Olympics in London, Team USA had quite a few breakout stars – among the selected athletes was Gabrielle “Gabby” Douglas of the Fab Five (gymnastics team). With little talk of her going into the games, the 16 year-old gymnast proved to the world how much of a talent she really is as she went on to snag GOLD medals in both the individual and the team competitions. Gabby’s successes this past summer allowed her to make Olympic history. She’s the FIRST woman of color and African-American gymnast to be honored as the individual all-around champion and the FIRST American gymnast to win the gold medal in the individual and team competitions during the same Olympics. Ever since her triumphs across the pond, the Virginia Beach native has landed a slew of endorsement deals and a completely new fan base. Respectively so, Gabrielle Douglas is the real deal. Breaking barriers and melting hearts in the process, this past year belongs to her!

entertainment Shonda Rhimes

EGL’s Hustlaprenuer of the Year: Shonda Rhimes Considered “One of the Most Powerful Women in Television”, Shonda Rhimes has changed the face of primetime. Shonda once told a friend, “one day I’ll rule the television world” and 10 years later she has fulfilled that prophecy! Shonda’s creative thinking is what landed her three hit television series on ABC: Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, and the new breakout hit, Scandal. The success of these series makes Shonda the first African-American woman to create and executive-produce a primetime drama for television! Shonda got her big break in 1999 as the screenplay writer for HBO’s ‘Introducing Dorothy Dandridge’, but it was only a matter of time before she’d breakout on her own; Shonda realized network television is where she needed to be! She then placed her magic pen to paper and began dishing out the characters like the super sexy doctors “McDreamy”, “McSteamy”, and the ultra powerful “Olivia Pope”! After 10 years in the business, three hit television shows running consecutively and 20 million weekly viewers; Shonda Rhimes has turned her hustle into a nationwide phenomenon! This tenacity is the reason Shonda Rhimes is EGL Hustlaprenuer of the Year!

EGL’s Breakout Star of the Year: Kerry Washington Kerry Washington has blossomed since her “Save the Last Dance” days. Although the actress has been on the big screen for years, Kerry definitely claimed 2012 as her own. Kerry captured the attention of many with her starring role on ABC’s hit show “Scandal”. Taking on the role as the great Olivia Pope not only reinvented Kerry as an actress, but has also earned her a spot in TV history. Kerry was named the first African-American woman to lead a primetime series on a major network in 38 years. For her work, Kerry received the Star Power Award at the 2012 Black Girls Rock Awards. Between filming a major primetime show and gracing the covers of magazines such as ELLE, Vibe and Women’s Health (to name a few), Kerry has filmed three movies, most notably, the Oscar worthy Django:Unchained, which is set to be released Christmas Day 2012. Kerry also took a stand politically as a supporter of President Obama delivering a moving speech at the 2012 Democratic Convention. Within a year’s time Kerry has transformed her career into one to be envied, thus making her EGL’s “Breakout Star of The Year!”

Now that we are well into the new-year, many of us have resolved to start hitting the gym. Unfortunately, hard economic times have caused potential clients to place gym memberships on the bottom of their to-do list. However, lack of funds does not mean you cannot commit to becoming active in the New Year. To get you started, here is a list of five moves you can do at home to get you closer to that goal of a healthier you, and the best part is, there’s no membership required.

1• Sit Ups- Exercise in which one uses the abdominal muscles to raise the torso from a supine to a sitting position and then lies back down again without moving the legs. The main objective is to work the abdomen muscles. An exercise schedule of (2) sets of reps 12-15 is a good start for beginners.

4• Arm Circles- Exercise used to strengthen and stabilize the shoulder girdle. This exercise is completed by standing with legs shoulder width apart, while extending arms, and rotating in small circles. An exercise schedule of (2) sets of 20 each way is a good start.

2• Back Extensions- Exercise aimed to stretch and strengthen your lower back. The exercise is completed by lying face down on a mat, and lifting the torso and arms off the floor. An exercise schedule of (2) sets of 10 reps is a good start for beginners.

5• Running – Exercise where individuals move rapidly on foot. This is a great releaser of stress while getting you in shape. For the beginner it’s recommended a person starts slow and move forward at a moderate rate. In a nutshell, moving too fast can lead to potential burnout on your end. Therefore, it’s important to remain consistent as well as realistic when getting started.

3• Walking Lunges- The art of lunging while walking during your exercise regimen around the track. The main focus areas are the Glutes, Hamstrings and Quad Muscles of Your Legs. An exercise schedule of (2) sets of 10 for each leg works is a good start.

Rock Candy

quiet storm By: Latisha Elmes

Chipz da General For many people there’s a particular situation or event that encourages change… For Chipz Da General, an unfortunate run-in with the law is what prompted this change and introduced Chipz to the music industry. Signed to a label that lost their distribution through Sony, Shaq (affectionately known by those close to him) was left to start from scratch and has returned to tell us why he refuses to take any days off.

“You’re going to lose a lot trying to get anywhere in this business.” January 2013 • everythinggirlslove.com

EYE Candy

Was being a rapper something you always aspired to be? Music was just something that was always around me; but not something I took too serious until I had a little run-in with the law. I was placed in a probation program that got me an internship with The Source magazine. Being in that environment opened my eyes to a lot, and once again I found myself surrounded by music. One night in 2006, I was messing around in the studio… A Dj by the name of DJ focus happened to be there in another booth recording his mix tape and overheard me. He came and he told me he wanted to host my mix tape. I said if you serious imma get serious. Needless to say, he was very serious and we put out the first mix tape, Leaders of the new school. I’ve been rapping since. You’ve been signed to a major before, what happened? I had a situation with Macktown/ Sony and from the outside looking in I thought everything was great. I had just released “Recession Proof” and was getting show money and modeling checks, and then out of nowhere it all just stopped. The phone calls, everything and I always wondered why until recently I ran into the labels DJ Big Inf and he put me on to game. What happened was there were a couple of other acts on the label at the time… Sony wanted Macktown to push me, but they {Mack town} had other plans. Eventually Sony froze everything. The process of waiting for my deal to expire was all that really affected me. Getting out of that situation took 6 months, so I

hibernated to the studio and kept pushing. Who are some of the artist that you have worked with? I’ve done records with Lloyd, John Mayer, Jadakiss and Tre Williams. I’ve opened shows for Trey Songs, Fabulous and Pleasure P just to name a few. It’s a lot. I’ve been around a lot of people. So tell us a little about “No Days Off” It’s my ninth project, but I consider it to be my first actual project. Not taking anything from the eight previous ones, but with No Days Off, I found myself as a fully developed artist. From the work ethic I put into this project to the structure of the records and the production on it. It’s easy to take somebody’s beats and say you killed it but, try it from scratch and you won’t get the same results. Patience is a process and I can really say out of all my projects I just enjoyed creating this one from start to finish. On previous projects I was bouncing around from studio to studio with five different engineers and a bunch of yes men. This go round I didn’t have none of that around me. I didn’t need an entourage around me. I was good with just my manager, my engineer, my beats and my thoughts. So yea, the Street single is out right now “Shouldn’t be about the money” and it’s doing well. The video has over 100,000 views on World Star, we got a good buzz. This is gonna be a classic one. Jan 22nd y’all shall see!

rock candy “Don’t ever let anyone discourage you. Obama is president of the USA, you can do anything you put ya mind to”

rock candy Any major deals on the table? I got an independent situation with Jas Group Entertainment; they’re based out in L.A. I’m the only artist up at the label so they pretty much put all the focus on me. We got a few offers that are being presented now. I’ve been talking with Young Jeezy, talking with Yo Gotti … its a few things up in the air. We just have to see where it goes. Has the road to success been a hard one? It’s definitely been a hard one. Everything that glitters isn’t gold. It’s a struggle to get where you trying to go. You’re going to lose a lot trying to get anywhere in this business.

“I keep myself motivated so I can get where I need to go.”

What advice would you give to aspiring rappers? If there is something that you do, something you love and something you have a passion for, work hard at ya craft. When I sit back and listen to my first project, I remember niggas told me, “Yo don’t do this. Stay in the street, stick to getting money… ” This here {music} is something I worked hard at, something I crafted. Now I’m here with my ninth project, No days off so don’t ever let anyone discourage you. Obama is President of the USA, you can do anything you put ya mind to”. What drives you? My past struggles. My family situation. Never wanting to be down again. Never wanting to have to go back to those streets again.

January 2012 • everythinggirlslove.

Why?! There must’ve been deal breaker situations in a previous relationship… I gotta be able to trust you. My problem is I’m always on the road. I cut the phones off when I’m working, I like to zone out… that’s just how I am. I’ve had fights over me not answering my phone... I’ve dealt with trusting a woman and while on the road cheating and being cheated on. I know both sides so if we coming together and we understand each other we gotta be supportive of one another. I’m not an arguing type [dude]. My phone shouldn’t be an issue… You gotta trust me like I trust you. Do you think a female could maintain a relationship and a career and be successful at both and keep you happy? Majority of the women out here, no. But I think there are some women that can honestly get it done. I can’t tell you how to maintain being happy. I’m going to do my part so you just have to do yours and understand everything I’m going through because I’m going to understand everything you’re going through. What is the definition of a real man? Someone who takes care of his family; someone who provides. Not someone out here busting his gun or making the most money but somebody who could provide for him and everything that is around him. Any New Year’s resolutions? Progress more. Get more money; Bust some more deals; that’s pretty much it.

What kind of females are you in to? I’m attracted to females that I can relate to. Someone who understands my job and what I’m doing; at the same time being my support system. Someone who is going to love me and want to be with me for me before all the fame comes. I had a major behind me, so I was on the road and I was touring, I been through the whole circus so I know the ups and downs that comes with a relationship.

If you could describe yourself in one word, what would that one word be and why? I have so many, but I would call myself self-motivated. I keep myself hungry. I know the moves I’m out here trying to make. I know what needs to be done so I don’t need the crowd, the fame, the cameras or the entourage; I travel one deep. I keep myself out here motivated to get where I need to go.

Are you currently in a relationship? Nah, nah, not at all! That’s my smart answer. Not at all! LOL

Wardrobe 101: The Basics By The EGL Fashion Team

Trends come and go like the wind. What’s hot one season is black listed the next. Retailers like H&M, Zara and Mango make runway trends super accessible and affordable. But, before you go blowing your entire Christmas bonus on those embroidered Balmain jeans, make sure your closet is stocked with the basic wardrobe essentials. Think of your wardrobe staples as a blank canvas on which you can build your style identity. You can never go wrong with plain staple pieces, they’re classics that never get outdated and go with absolutely everything. With these key pieces as a foundation, you’re sure to be in style no matter the trend forecast.

The Skinny Jean-These jeans look good on everyone! From petite women to plus size women, these jeans are versatile enough to go from the grocery store to the office (casual Friday of course!) These jeans look best when the fitted form is balanced with a loose top. They are the perfect way to dress down a fancy embroidered blazer or flashy top. Opt for a darker wash, this shade flatters all body types and goes from day to night instantly. The Boyfriend Jean-The slouchy, comfy fit adds instant hipster cool to any look. For those ladies ready to bare abs, they’re the perfect compliment to those trendy crop-top shirts that are January 2012 • everythinggirlslove.

popping up all over the place. When matched up with next season’s sheer, chiffon blouses, the look is transformed from Tomboy to Downtown Chic! The Wide Leg Trouser-Just as skinny jeans look great with flowy tops, wide legged trousers look fabulous with fitted tops and knits. Avoid tops that are too loose and bulky with these pants…the look can easily go from sophisticated to sloppy. The Cigarette Pant-The perfect piece to take you from the boardroom to brunch, these pants look great with everything. Paired with a blouse and pointed heels for the office, this look is

polished and youthful. When matched with a simple knit top and a pair of flats, it becomes weekend warrior fab! The Pencil Skirt- Think of this piece as the sister of the cigarette pant. Pair with a fun, graphic sweatshirt and heels for a cool, quirky feel or keep the look polished and sharp with a great knit top or button down blouse. The Black Dress-When in doubt, a black dress works everywhere! Spice it up with next season’s trendy beaded cardigan, bright heels and strappy sandals full of hardware. Or keep the look classic with a plain black pump and minimal accessories. Either way, the

look is a winner! The Legging-No longer just for the gym, these pants work everywhere from the dance studio to the supermarket to the office to nights out. They are the ultimate in form fitting wear; so be sure to compliment these pants with longer, less fitted tops. Be sure to invest in a good quality pair with at least 5% Spandex/Elastane. The Tank-The perfect blank canvas! A good quality white or black tank goes with everything from sweatpants to suits. Be sure to invest in more than a few!

FASHION Wardrobe 101: The Basics

The White Blouse-Tone down trendy leather pants, skirts, paisley prints and embellished and embroidered bottoms with a simple white blouse. When there is doubt, a simple white blouse goes with anything from jeans to super trendy patterned pants. The Black Blazer- Just like the white blouse, a great black blazer never goes out of style; and goes with everything! A blazer adds polish to even the most casual ensemble. It also balances out super trendy bottoms with complicated textures and patterns.

January 2012 • everythinggirlslove.com

The Leather Moto Jacket- Surprisingly, this piece works wonders for a wardrobe! It updates every look. Use it to transition your summer maxi dresses into fall, add instant hipster glam to a Saturday Night glittery dress or go for a super badass look with jeans and heels. The Pointed Heel-A pointed heel will stand the test of time long after platforms have gone to shoe heaven. This classic shape literally goes with almost every outfit in your closet. The pointed heel works wonders for legs, instantly making them look slimmer and longer. Whether you wish to dress up jeans, attend a church function or go to dinner with your beaux, a pointed heel works for every occasion. Invest in a black and nude pair.

The Strappy Heel- For those looks that need a lighter feel, think flowy, less structured dresses, even the wide legged pants! Strappy heels are also a perfect complement to sexy, feminine sheer blouses. The Fun Flat-As much as we love heels, let’s face it…our tootsies need a break sometime. A pair of flats in a fun color will spruce up your casual wear and keep you comfy at the same time. Pick a bright, but wearable color like red or yellow or even a metallic like silver or gold for maximum style appeal and versatility.

The High Heel Boot-Much like the pointed heel, a pair of great boots can add instant “oomph” to any look! Avoid too short skirts or shorts…or the look can go from Polished to Pretty Woman! The Flat Boot-These feet friendly shoes work as the perfect “instant cool girl” accessory. Just like the leather jacket, use flat boots to transition your summer favorites into winter. These boots work with tights and shorts and sundresses too. Flat boots are also the PERFECT pairing for leggings. They keep the leg line sleek and clean.

1. How would you describe yourself? I’m very caring, warm-hearted, down to earth and very straight forward and direct; I call things as I see them. 2. Did you have a privileged childhood? I had a wonderful childhood. My father and mother separated when I was two. We had the things we needed but financially, my family had ups and downs just like everyone else. Because I was raised by my mother, I had the opportunity to see a very strong woman. Even if we were suffering, I never knew it. She put the spirit of entrepreneurship in me. That’s why I am who I am today. 3. How did your upbringing lead you to a life of charity? I’ve been rich before I ever had money because I’ve always had a family that supported me, loved me, and made sure that I knew what was important in life. My family was popular [because of my grandfather’s status], but as a child I just remember my family always going to feed the hungry and homeless. That was a humbling experience that’s what I set out to do. It’s a privilege for me to be able to give back. 4. Was your grandfather a big influence in your life? Absolutely! He was very outspoken and he lived out loud. He wasn’t afraid to say what he really felt and stand up for what’s right. 5. What lesson did he give you that stuck with you your entire life? He made sure that I was grounded and made sure that I had a purpose in life. He said that, “your purpose is something you find out after you pray about it.” So I live a life of purpose. That’s what I got from him, and that’s why I try to continue to let my heart lead me through life.

6. What does it take to catch a football player’s attention? To get the attention of a football player or any man you need to be an independent woman, but learn how to depend on a man as well. Depending on a man doesn’t mean that you’re less powerful. In actuality, you’re more powerful to be able to honor and respect your husband.

7. How did you meet your husband and figure out that he was the one? I met my husband at my girlfriend’s birthday party at the Lucky Lounge. So I always say, “I got lucky at the Lucky Lounge.” Once we went out on our first date I knew that he had this intensity and passion that I could identify with. From that moment on, we fell in love, and I knew he was the one.

8. How has your life changed since you got married? When we got married, his son came to live with us, so I became a mom. It’s a beautiful experience to be able to watch someone grow and to be able to take all the things that you’ve learned through your life and help teach that little person. So that was a big change and a really important responsibility that I gained. 9. Are you really a housewife? My priority is family and my household so yes, I am a housewife in all senses of the word.

10. What is Key to Giving? Key to Giving is a foundation that I’m starting that will raise funds through fundraisers and different events to give money to charities that are important to me. 11. Are you trying to make a real career out of singing too? I have a true passion for music. I was in a singing group many years ago, but it did not take off, due to management. I’ve been doing demos so, I don’t know for sure if there’s an album coming out from myself, just yet. I’m still developing my sound. January 2013 • everythinggirlslove.com

12. Why did you join the show so late in the season? It took me some time to decide if this was what I wanted to do, which is why I joined the show late. 13. Are the friendships portrayed on the show real? Those friendships are absolutely real. I’m a grown woman and I don’t have time to develop fake relationships with people. I only use the word “friend” for people who are sincere to me. So, if I call you a friend of mine most likely you will be a friend for life. 14. Do you worry about how you’ll be portrayed on the show? How I’m portrayed on the show is not something that’s within my control. It’s a TV show and they’re going to take whatever is most entertaining about me to put on the show. That’s not to say that whatever they put on is not an actual part of who I am. But, it’s not all of who I am. There will be a lot of chances for America to get to know who I really am. January 2013 • everythinggirlslove.com

feature “It’s a TV show and they’re going to take whatever is most entertaining about me to put on the show.” 15. Will your husband and son be on the show a lot? My husband will be on the show but I made the choice not to put my son on the show. I can handle it because I’m a big girl, but a child should be a child, and enjoy his childhood. 16. How do you think the show will benefit you? I was looking to bring attention and awareness to my family’s foundation: Hosea Feed the Hungry and Homeless. It was important for me to bring that attention and bring awareness to what the need is, so that we can help make a change in other people’s lives. 17. Do you think that black women are portrayed in a bad light on reality TV? I agree that reality TV does highlight some negativity that women go through in relationships with other women but at the end of the day, that’s what we all go through in real life. If people want to see the positives, they can. A lot of the women on these shows are independent women who belong to various charities; women who have children and are trying to run a household.

18. Do you have a New Year’s Resolution? I can’t stand when I make promises to myself that I won’t keep So, what I’ve decided to do, if it pops in my mind, and I know it’s something that I need to start doing, I’m just going to do it. 19. What New Year’s traditions does your family have? My aunt always cooks black-eyed peas. So every New Years we get together and eat black-eyed peas together. It’s supposed to be good luck and a sign of a good New Year. 20. What do you have planned for the upcoming year? I’ll be coming out with a beauty product. I can’t announce what it is yet, because I’m still signing the paperwork. That’s exciting. Next year I’m going to be working with a foundation called Save Your Daughter. Cook You Way To A Healthier New You By Cashay Chanel It’s a brand new year! A new day! A new beginning! This is your time to create a brand new, healthy and sexy you! Becoming healthier is the number one New Year’s resolutions for Americans. Unfortunately, it’s also the first resolution that gets tossed out the window. Becoming healthy is not an easy feat. It’s a lifestyle change that takes an open mind, discipline, commitment and practice. However, it is certainly possible.

An essential part of becoming healthier is simply to make better choices in your diet. Now I’m not talking about crash dieting and torturing your body to consume concoctions of lemons and cayenne pepper or coercing yourself to eat like a rabbit munching on lettuce all day. A healthy body is a result of consuming nutritional foods with a well balanced diet.

January 2013 • everythinggirlslove.com

LIFESTYLE

Some of the simplest and sure fire ways to start on your road to healthy living is to be aware of what you are putting into your body. The best way to do so is to get your butt in the kitchen. Cooking your meals at home guarantees ingredient and portion control. Another tip is to shop the perimeter of the grocery store. There you will find your nourishing fresh produce options. The aisles are filled with temptation and processed foods, which you want to refrain from on your journey to wellness. Also, try swapping out ingredients like white rice for brown rice or starchy white potatoes for fiber rich sweet potatoes and alternate using whole grain pasta instead of white.

SALMON: The American Heart Association suggest that women eat salmon twice a week. Its filled with keeps you focused and improves your mood. The omega-3s in fish and quality fish oil help your body burn fat more efficiently, make your mind more focused and spiritually inclined, and improve your mood January 2013 • everythinggirlslove.com

As women, it is imperative that we make the best choices to ensure our optimum health, as well as for the ones we love at home. Here is my top ten list of foods that every woman should incorporate into their diets to achieve that sexy healthy body that you want and deserve.

OATMEAL: Oats have a low glycemic index and are high in fiber which keeps us feeling full and our digestive system regular as well as contains GLA which helps regulate our hormones.

AVOCADOS: Are high in good fat, vitamins, and antioxidants, which contribute to keeping our skin and hair beautiful.

GREEN LEAFY VEGETABLES: Whether it’s broccoli, spinach, kale or collard greens, leafy greens have powerful phytonutrients to alkalize your body and help neutralize carcinogens and stimulate detoxifying enzymes that help the body rid itself of cancer causing toxins.

LIFESTYLE

OLIVE OIL: Cooking with olive oil has been proven to decrease the risk and prevent the severity of certain inflammatory diseases such as asthma and rheumatoid arthritis. YOGURT: This creamy snack aids in digestion, promotes bone health, is an excellent source of protein, and protects against heart disease.

BERRIES: If you want to eat any fruit pick a berry! Berries have the lowest amount of fat and carbohydrates than any other fruit! Although all berries have immense nutritional value, Blueberries are loaded with free radical fighting antioxidants (no other berry has more) they are one of nature’s best protectors of cancer and heart disease while aiding in diminishing belly fat. They are also known as brain food because they increase communication between neurons.

WATER: This natural element prevents dehydration, cleans out the body and promotes the healing process. It also prevents overeating and obesity. Drink a glass of water before each meal and sip while you are eating and you will consume less food and still feel full. A woman should drink half her weight of water in a day! Meaning if you are 140 pounds you should aim for at least 70 ounces of water a day. Carry water with you everywhere you go to stay hydrated.

January 2013 • everythinggirlslove.com

BEANS: You’ve heard the saying, “Beans, beans are good for your heart!” They’re bursting with nutrients and are a rich source of foliate, fiber, protein and potassium. They’ve also been linked to reducing risk of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and even breast cancer. They have even proven to slow the absorption of carbs into your system.

LIFESTYLE

GREEN TEA: The antioxidant in green tea is 100 times more effective than vitamin C and 25 times better than vitamin E. This helps your body at protecting cells from damage believed to be linked to cancer. It also helps combat aging and promotes longevity rate naturally. Green tea also burns fat and boosts your metabolism. It can help you burn up to 70 calories in just one day. That translates to 7 pounds in one year!

Remember it’s all about moderation; Rome wasn’t built in a day. You didn’t become unhealthy overnight so you can’t expect to reverse it immediately. By incorporating even a few of these ingredients and tips into your daily diet, you will be back on the right track. Below is a list of delicious and simple recipes below to help you get started. The Death of a Friendship By Kanarian Kindred

For many of us 2013 will mark the creations of new chapters of our lives. Unfortunately, with the creation of new chapters a few old ones will be written and some might even close. In a nutshell, some people aren’t going to be a part of your life in 2013. This change does not have to result in resentment. The reality is, sometimes people have reached full capacity in your life and although it can be a painful process, it’s often necessary. Anyone that is not contributing to your progress is hindering your growth and that relationship needs to be modified. Here are some factors to consider when you begin cleaning house.

1. Everything has its seasonThough we hate to face it, some people aren’t meant to be in our lives forever. Therefore, when you start to sense that a relationship is going south, handle it like an adult talk to your friend regarding any concerns or hurt feelings you’re having. If the friendship is indeed over wish them the best and keep it moving.

January 2013 • everythinggirlslove.com

2. If it’s your fault own it and take responsibility- Sometimes you’re the problem, so take the time to evaluate the situation. Did I do or say anything to cause this person to fall back from my life? If so, be the bigger person and apolo-

gize for your misgivings. If they still choose to walk away accept their decision and move on. 3. Get your head out the clouds & back in the game- Lastly, it’s time to get real with yourself and everyone around you. To put it bluntly, are you really surprised people have severed ties with you? How often do they call? How often do you see them? Are you always a sounding board for their problems, but never get a shoulder to cry on when needed? If so, the fact the friendship is dying shouldn’t be a total surprise. The signs have been there all along, but you chose to ignore them. For that reason, speak with the person directly to gain a better understanding of what went wrong. This affords you the ability to end the friendship on a high note, and take the information with you as a “what not to do” in future friendships. As you move forward, take the time to enjoy the ride. Instead of instantly calling people friends, take the time to get to know them. Understand that everyone is not meant to stay with you for a lifetime; some are just meant to be there for a moment in life.

Being financially stable

Now is the time to establish and plan your “New Years” resolutions. This year you may decide to pay off your credit card debt or student loans, or maybe decide to increase the amount of money in your savings account by decreasing your expenses or spending. Whatever you decide, make this year different from the past and stick to your plan until you achieve your goal! Having a solid financial foundation is extremely important, especially in today’s economic market, so here are some suggestions to help you reach your financial goals.

Are You Balling or Falling? By Crystal Jordan

Assess- Before establishing any goals, you will first need to assess your current financial situation. • What is your gross income? • How much do you spend on bills? • How much do you spend on extracurricular activities? An assessment will be help you see the full picture of your finances and from there you can A) make the tough decisions in reference to your spending habits, and B) set realistic goals for making change.

January 2013 • everythinggirlslove.com

Set Goals- Now that you know where you stand financially, you can begin to set realistic goals. Establishing and writing your goals is one of the most important steps in creating a solid future for your finances. After you have written your goals, put them up on your bedroom wall or on your refrigerator as a constant reminder of what you are working towards accomplishing.

Execute- It is time to make a plan and call on your will power so you can see those goals come to fruition. For more tips and financial advice, visit the Hustlapreneur section in the EverythingGirlsLove.com.

The Blogging Business What it takes to make it to the top

By Milan Zoe The Jasmine Brand shares with us everything from what it takes to really make it in the entertainment industry as a blogger to how she really feels about the celebrities she interviews.

Can you tell us a little about your background and how you got started? I graduated from Morgan State University with a bachelor’s degree in Communications and P.R. I started off working at a small public relations firm, then in the communications department at a consulting firm, and right before I quit my job to start the Jasmine brand, I was director of marketing at an association for wine and spirits. So, I have a marketing communications background. Did you always plan to be in the journalism field? When I was younger I wanted to be a broadcast journalist; I wanted to be the next Oprah. I went to school and I was like I could do news first, [people] told me that I would have to start in a small market and I would only make like twenty thousand dollars a year. I was just like I can’t, that is not really going to work out for me. I really just put those dreams of working in journalism and communication to the backburner and that kind of realm of interviewing people and working in entertainment so I could just do PR and Marketing and I’ll be happy and I’ll be fulfilled. So, I kind of forgot that I always had a dream of being in front of the camera and talking to people. I guess it was my dream. It’s one of those things you kind of dream about when you were growing up and then reality hits and you think oh, I can’t do this. So, it was one of those things that kind of happened. I did forget that I actually had that dream. Were you nervous to switch from a nine to five with a steady paycheck to starting your own brand? I was very nervous but I don’t think it really hit me until I did it. Leaving the comfort of a nine to five, health insurance, and sick day has been an adjustment. I was nervous. I wake up nervous everyday.

January 2013 • everythinggirlslove.com

But you still made the jump? Yeah absolutely! I am naturally a worrier. I worry about things all the time. That’s just how my brain works. I am always thinking about the next thing that I have to do and what’s next. I have an ongoing to-do list. It’s just my nature but I am working on it.

What would you say are the perks and challenges of working for yourself? The perks are I get to do what I love every single day. I’m my own boss. It’s like a high actually. I literally am responsible for my money, my team and myself and that is just a beautiful thing. I guess the shallow perks are meeting celebrities and stuff like that but I don’t really care about that part so much. I don’t really consider that as a perk. I think being able to do what I want to do everyday is the best part. The challenges are, the same as the perks, I’m responsible for whether my team and myself can survive month to month. So I don’t have the option of waking up late, or partying too much, or taking a day off. So it seem like everyone is a “blogger” these days. What makes your brand unique or different and tell me a little about the Jasmine brand as a whole. The Jasmine Brand, as a whole at this point is an online blog. I give readers and folk alike the latest celebrity stories, entertainment news, a little bit of music, a little bit of fashion, urban hip-hop culture. I think what makes my site unique is number one the writing. I know how to write decent and a lot of people aren’t the best at writing, which is cool. I come from a place where I don’t shove my opinion down your throat. It’s very rare that you will see me attack a celebrity. I’ll give you what’s reported and I’ll end it with a question to let the reader decide how they feel. A third thing that sets me apart January 2013 • everythinggirlslove.com

To be Successful

is I think my personality comes through in my writing, I’m not really cool and hip, and I’m not the red bottom girl. I’m regular. I’m corny. I think they appreciate that. Have you ever wanted to give up on everything or perhaps was there ever something that almost deterred you from blogging? Yeah, every day I wonder if I made the right decision. I could be making a lot more money in the career I was in. I’m like a driven person in whatever I do, so I was going to be at the top of my game but I did not have a passion for it. What advice would you give to aspiring bloggers and individuals who either are in or would like to work in the entertainment industry? Number one, do research. That’s the most important thing! That was a great piece of advice. I think a lot of times people get into the entertainment industries with the wrong intentions and then they get upset when it’s not all the glitz and glamour that they thought it was. People see me on the carpet and meeting celebrities. First of all, those people are not my friends. A lot of celebrities, not all, they like you because they want you to write about them. It’s not a sincere relationship. The bigger you get, the more people try to use you. It has jaded me... I’ll be on the carpet, ill probably get like two seconds with somebody or arguing with their publicist behind the scenes because they don’t want me to talk about something in particular. Or, I’m in a room full of smoke because I’m interviewing a rapper. Nobody gets to see all of that, that’s a sacrifice. Who wants to get out the bed at one o’clock in the morning? Who wants to say to their boyfriend, can we reschedule because I have to go to L.A. for the such and such. It sounds cute but it’s really not that cute to your man.

So how do you balance your professional life with your personal life? I don’t. I don’t have a balance. I have a professional life. Do I have personal relationships? Yeah but they suffer and I don’t want to say I am okay with that but my professional life is more important than my love life, my romantic life. I’m not a balanced person so I don’t know what that looks like. Do you think you have had your defining moment as ‘The Jasmine Brand’? I don’t think that’s happened yet. I’ve had nice moments and people recognize my work or source me on big outlets and stuff like that. [But], I don’t think I’ve had that defining moment yet. As you stated previously, you’re not really like the red bottom fancy type of girl, so how would you describe your style? This is no shade to anybody else that wears red bottoms I think that’s cool and dope. I’m not really a trendy girl. I can’t really keep up with them because it changes so much. I just do whatever I want to do. I don’t match; I mix patterns, and if something looks cute on my body I wear that out. I

think red bottoms are cool. Not really my thing. I honestly feel like in real life the average woman does not wear red bottoms and there is nothing wrong with that. A lot of my readers don’t wear red bottoms. I don’t have that kind of reader. Any New Year’s resolutions? I don’t know if I have any resolutions. I would say I would take a vacation, because I haven’t taken a vacation since Jasmine Brand began. I would take a vacation and try to take at least one day off a week. Is there anything else that you wanted to share or wanted our readers to know? I love Everything Girls Love. I love your readers. I love the new blog that you guys have. I’m a big fan. We have a feeling her resolution for a vacation and a day off a week will never come to fruition, she is too much of a Hustlapreneur right now to take time off. But that’s the type of work ethic it took to get her to stand out in a sea of wannabes. Those same ethics will continue to lead her to success. 2013 is sure to be a year of milestones for this rising star.

SMILE LIKE A SUPERSTAR FOR THE NEW YEAR! By Dr. Catrise Lynette Austin

It’s 2013. A time where we all reflect on both old and new goals and commit to New Year resolutions improving our overall quality of life. We feel great as we make our commitments to lose weight, get out of debt, find a new job, or even finally find the love of our lives. But what about committing to having the best “New You” with a healthy SMILE? You see, many adults with imperfect teeth often think a change in their smile isn’t a priority. Either they think the cost can be applied towards something else (a new gym membership, clothes, hair, kids, the latest Apple product, etc.) or they think that they’ve lived with their teeth for so long that changing them isn’t really necessary. What many people don’t realize is that an unhealthy smile can prevent you from accomplishing your other goals, not to mention it drastically reduces your swag appeal.

When I bumped into the beautiful Rhianna backstage during the 2009 BET Awards rehearsals in LA she said, “A beautiful smile warms people up to you. It gives you confidence, especially in the entertainment industry.” Jennifer Hudson doesn’t play when it comes to teeth either so your smile better be on point when you encounter her. She told me, “Teeth are everything! It’s the first thing that people notice about you. As a matter of fact, I pay really close attention to people’s teeth.” It’s true… I say this all the time; your smile is one of the first things that people will indeed notice about you. It is your greeting card, your business card, your facial mood ring, and can be your best flirting tool when attracting the opposite sex. We all know that imperfect front teeth can impact your self-esteem, confidence, and overall sense of self-worth. As you think about your New Year’s resolutions, don’t forget to consider adding a healthier, more attractive smile to that list! Dentistry has advanced tremendously over the past 5 years. Not only is it more comfortable and even spa-like when you visit, there are more cosmetic dental treatment options available today than ever before that can help virtually any patient have a Hollywood Smile. Let’s take a look at today’s most popular cosmetic dental treatment options to consider for the New Year:

wellness

wellness Teeth Whitening Teeth Whitening is the most commonly requested cosmetic dental procedure on the planet. Virtually all celebs whiten their teeth. In fact, teeth whitening is the #1 most requested procedure. It’s one of the quickest and easiest options for improving your smile. If your teeth are not their brightest due to coffee or tea stains, smokers stains, or simply the effects of time, teeth whitening may be a great solution. There are many whitening options available to consumers in a wide range of prices. Before whitening your teeth, visit your dentist. Your dentist can assess the color of your teeth during a consultation to recommend the best whitening product and make sure that your teeth and gums are healthy enough to ensure a safe and effective whitening experience. The best results for people with moderate to darker yellow teeth are achieved with a 1hour in office whitening performed by your dental team. Popular 1 hour in-office whitening systems used by your dentist may include Zoom, Opalescence Boost, or Kor. When performed by your dentist in-office, the beauty is that there is no work for you to do at home afterwards. It will however cost you for this convenience. In-office teeth whitening can range from $500-$800 for a 1 hour session.

If you are on a tight budget, don’t worry. There are over the counter products that can still help you kick off your New Year with pearly whites. Crest 3D Whitestrips are by far the most popular at home whitening products that can be purchased over the counter by consumers. They are most effective once you’ve had a professional teeth cleaning by your dentist and on mildly discolored teeth. They have a variety of different options, ranging from 30 minute to two hour treatments.

Crest 3D White Intensive Professional Effects Whitestrips ($59.99 per kit) whitens as well as a $500 in-office professional treatment and provides a visibly whiter smile after just 1 USE.

Crest 3D White 2 Hour Express Whitestrips ($54.99 per kit) delivers whiter teeth after just one (1) two hour treatment.

Crest 3D White Professional Effects Whitestrips ($49.99 per kit) works to remove over 10 years of set-in stains and whitens 25X better than leading whitening toothpaste.

Porcelain Veneers You’ve seen plenty of A-List celebs rocking those flashy porcelain pearly whites called porcelain veneers. Before getting porcelain veneers comedian Chris Rock, Keyshia Cole, and even rapper 50 Cent all took a lot of flak for having imperfect teeth. These stars have all had amazing smile transformations however thanks to veneers. Although not the most cost effective option, after teeth whitening porcelain veneers are by far “The Celebrities’ Choice” for quickly improving their smiles without the hassle of wearing braces. 50 Cent reportedly shelled out a whopping $60,000 for his new smile.

Porcelain Veneers are ultra-thin shells of porcelain that are custom designed to fit your smile and are then permanently affixed directly to the teeth. They are a great option for restoring the appearance of teeth that have been damaged due to injury or that are discolored, chipped or misaligned, closing gaps or disguising discolored teeth that did not respond well to whitening procedures. The color, shape, length and size of your teeth can be completely altered with high-quality porcelain veneers. Any dentist who is an expert in cosmetic dentistry can make you look younger and more attractive with porcelain veneers, but warning, it does come with a high price tag. Porcelain veneers takes 2 visits to complete and typically cost a whopping $1,000-$2,000 per tooth!

Componeers Want a celebrity smile, but can’t afford the costly porcelain veneers? Consider Componeers. Componeers are an affordable veneer product that allows you to have the same results as porcelain veneers for a fraction of the cost. The Componeers however ranges only around $500-600 dollars per tooth. It’s known as the “1-Visit, Smile To-Go” procedure, because you can walk in the dental office, and walk out an hour or 2 with your new veneers! Componeers are pre-made thin shells of tooth colored material that look like teeth. These thin shells come in various colors and can be sized and shaped to fit over your natural teeth. Componeers are then permanently fixed to the upper front and/or lower front teeth to conceal cosmetic imperfections such as chipped teeth, gaps, crowding, crooked teeth, stained or discolored teeth, and teeth that are too short or too long. Once applied to the teeth, they are then contoured and polished to give you a clean, natural looking smile.

wellness Try the “Snap on Smile” to Have Smile Like The Stars! The Snap-On Smile accessory is another exciting option that can give you a perfect smile for the New Year in no time. It’s a removable dental appliance that is made of a durable yet flexible crystallized acrylic resin material that snaps and fits over the natural curvature of your teeth. Snap-On Smile is a viable option for people who want to hide multiple gaps, mask discolored teeth, replace missing teeth, align the teeth without braces, or make your smile look a little less gummy without drilling or surgery! The beauty of this custom made appliance is that it can be modeled after your favorite celebrity’s smile! You can pick the Beyonce, Laz Alonso, or the most popular request… the Halle Berry.

Bonding

Another option for repairing chipped, cracked, discolored and eroded teeth is bonding. Bonding is a process in which your dentist takes an enamel-like putty material that comes in a variety of colors and applies it to the tooth’s surface. It is then hand sculpted into shape, hardened and then polished for an ideal smile. Earlier in his career, rapper Nas was known for having a chipped front tooth. He later went on to repair this imperfection and now has a beautiful smile (and a Grammy Nomination to go along with it)! Bonding takes only 1 visit and can vary in price depending on how large of a bonding job is needed per tooth. The good news is if you have dental insurance, your insurance may pay up to 80% of the cost of bonding. Visit your dentist to see if you are a candidate for bonding. First, your dentist makes a putty molding of your existing teeth to replicate the existing smile. Second, your dentist will give you the opportunity to choose the preferred shape and color of your SnapOn. From the “smile-style” book, patients can choose from 19 color shades and over 18 shapes and teeth arrangements. Third, your case is sent to the Snap-On laboratory for custom fabrication and within 10-14 days, your beautiful Snap-on Smile is ready. No needles, no drilling, no pain. Simply wear this appliance over your natural teeth all day as normal while you speak, eat, and drink. It’s so natural looking that you’ll fool the masses with your Snap-On Smile. Each appliance (upper and/or lower) will cost you $15002000, a fraction of the cost of veneers. There has never been a better time to upgrade your smile so let 2013 be the year of YOU. Put yourself first and spend a little extra money on perfecting those pearly whites. Your smile is just as much of a qualified investment in who you are, or who you can become as any other thing on your New Year’s resolution list. Changing your smile and oral hygiene habits can literally change your life. Just know that there are affordable solutions for every kind of dental problem. If you are overdue for a basic checkup and teeth cleaning or are not familiar with the latest in cosmetic dentistry, it is time to take the first step by calling your dentist schedule a consultation and treatment. Imagine a New Year, a New “SuperStar” Smile, a New You…..Now that’s something to smile about!

Dating and Mating

Don’t be mad, be better! Sometimes we find ourselves on the ugliest end of envy. We experience such discontent in our own lives, but instead of taking necessary steps to make improvements, we hate on those who embody what we want to achieve. We talk about all the things we are planning, but planning never becomes doing. We may say that we want to lose ten pounds in two weeks, but we know that without proper exercise and dieting those results will be hard to come by. When identifying what changes we want to make, it’s important to listen to ourselves. Within our thoughts lay the answers to our own discontent. This introspection and self-exploration will help you identify the areas that need work, so that change may begin. Highlight your strengths and weaknesses; then use your strengths to improve upon your weaknesses. Instead of resenting others for having a seemingly good life, evaluate your own and begin taking action. Use tools such as: To-Do List, planners, deadlines, and graphs to help you actual work toward and achieve your goals. It’s important to understand that you might not be able to make the forward progress that you want to make, if you haven’t really identified the change in which you can truly invest. Don’t make change based on what you see in others; instead improve your life, based on what you see in yourself.

Love & SEX Speak success in to your New Year and life. A new year brings along new perspective, fresh ideas, and most importantly a renewed faith in one’s self. Setting realistic and attainable goals is half the battle when it comes to achievement. We know what we want but do we actually have the motivation to obtain it? One of the best things someone can do for themselves is to feed themselves positive messages or practice positive self-talk. Positive self-talk can help you develop the confidence and courage to achieve your goals. It is a great way of increasing your self-esteem and ultimately reducing stress so that you are poised enough to tackle whatever may come your

way. Self-talk can be very rewarding as it raises your self-awareness, which is essential for success and excellent tool for fulfilling your individual potential. Our highest individual potential is facilitated by our belief in our abilities; how we see ourselves and what we have actually accomplished in the past. It is our responsibility to speak greatness, possibility, and success to ourselves. So start today… Remind yourself “I am amazing” “I am powerful” “I am capable” “I am enough” … The more you speak it, the more you will believe it and eventually achieve it!

But what if my progress fades, am I hopeless? Most of us are persistently striving for self-improvement. We go back to school, we start new diets, we learn new skills, we buy books all in order to grow and address our flaws. However, change can be tough and as stagnant or invalid as we may feel; we still tend to gravitate towards what is familiar. We set goals, then we reach our goals, but then we inevitably regress. This isn’t because we are incapable; it is because we might actually be resistant to change. Remember these tips to avoid being too stoic or too relaxed that you eventually undo your progress.

-Allow Room For Error! Know that change is a process and we often learn our lasting lessons when we don’t get it quite right the very first time. -Don’t make excuses! If you have set this goal, this means that while your former way of doing things might have been your comfort zone, it wasn’t fulfilling to you, which means your comfort zone is no longer an option. -Be consistent! You have to practice change regularly in order for it to stick.

-Don’t look back! In the end, you’ll look at yourself with pride and say, “I DID IT!” French author, François de la Rochefoucauld said, “The only constant in life is change”. So remember that change is going to occur regardless, but it is up to YOU to create positive change.

Love & SEX I’m tired of just dating! How do I transition from casual dating to steady dating? The dating scene might be wearing you down lately. It was fun and exciting at one point, but now you want more. You want to have someone steadily in your life that you can have fun with but also someone on which you can depend. However, just wanting a commitment, isn’t going to make it come into your life immediately. You might have to improve upon your dating conduct, in order to hook that special guy and keep him coming back.

Look the part by transforming inside and out. A new year brings along new perspective, fresh ideas, and most importantly While on a mission to transform and recreate yourself, consider ways in which you can let the world know that you are a new and improved you. Your new found motivation and confidence would not match with the dull appearance of the former you. Adopt a Healthier Lifestyle- Eat food that is good for your body and skin. Also, exercising on a regular basis will help you boost energy and allow you to change your body image. Try taking Yoga or Pilates class’s to tone and sculpt your body the way you’ve always desired. Take Risks with Your Look- Step out of your comfort zone! A good haircut and color will make you feel new and sexy. Go on a shopping adventure choosing clothes that boost your sex appeal but also make you feel comfortable and confident. Don’t be afraid to enhance your beauty with some makeup tricks. Get an Attitude Adjustment- Take the necessary steps to alleviate you from any stress, anger or anxiety that may be weighing you down. Keep a smile on your face and exclude any negative energy around you. Bring in 2013 with a fresh start your peace of mind will thank you. Every passing of time, presents a new opportunity to move a little closer to a better you. Don’t hesitate to explore your other layers.

Love & SEX

Ask yourself these questions in order to make the necessary improvements. 1. Do I show that I am interested in the many aspects of his life? 2. Am I portraying that I am both fun but worthy of respect? 3. Do I take on girlfriend duties before I’m even offered the position? 4. Do I make it clear that I have a life, outside of the man I date? 5. Am I trying to force too much personality into just one date? The answers to these questions shouldn’t be used for playing games or preparing strategies; these are ideas for being the change that you want to see in the men you attract. If you want a man that is more serious about you, then abandon all the gimmicks by changing your dating conduct. Show up as the one character that you play the best…YOU!

It has been a long year and my relationship has been negatively affected…How can I start new trends to help us get the romance back? You found the one guy that made you smile, trust, submit, and indulge; but after all the stress that life brings, you two find yourselves not getting along as well. The good news is that the New Year always brings new opportunities and a fresh outlook. So this is the best time of year to start setting new trends in your relationship. Often times, when a dark cloud settles over your relationship, it is hard to bring the sunshine back, but it’s possible. Re-establishing positive patterns, requires the initiative to first leave all the drama in the previous year. Let go of the arguments, disagreements and even the mean comments; and trade them with grand gestures of love and passion. It is going to take courage to be the first one to make this move, but if you’re unhappy with the way things are going, don’t wait for him to make the move. There is no room for pride in love! So instead of exchanging nagging comments and degrading glares, be spontaneous and throw him off by breaking your pattern with a display of romance. This one action could be what it takes to start a domino effect toward more Sunshine and happier days.

Love & SEX

Families are assigned and friends are selected; but neither should ever be neglected! Let 2013 be the year you strengthen your bonds; not only with your significant other, but with your friends and family as well. Unfortunately, we often take our friends and family for granted. Show your dedication to your family and friends with these simple actions: 1. Forgive: Release the tension from past arguments, disagreements, hurt and pain. Move forward with healthy boundaries to avoid reoccurring conflict. 2. Check In: Call just to say “hello! Demonstrate interest and concern by finding out the latest happenings in their life. 3. Host: Invite those close to you to come over for dinners, game nights and other events. This will give you all an opportunity to catch up. This will help you feel deeply connected 4. Show up: Make appearances at their special events or acknowledge their success with a simple gesture. This will let them know that you encourage and support them and their goals. Remember that family members are the special people that were chosen for us; while friends are essentially family we chose ourselves. Either way they are linked to us and we should honor the gifts of family and friends with respect and unconditional love because family really is all that matters in the end.
