DIY Whimsical Hot Air Balloon Written by: Jenna Gentry

We recently moved out of the city to a more remote part of Phoenix. Since moving up here, we’ve been spoiled with some beautiful scenery, crazy wildlife, and awesome views of the mountains. But we especially look forward to seeing the 20-30 hot air balloons that launch right down the road from us every morning. My youngest daughter has fallen in love with them, and asked me to make her some hot air balloons for her room. JoAnn Stores has a great tutorial for making one, and using their instructions (along with a little trial and error), ours turned out great! I thought you all might like to see how we made it, with some step by step photos of the process.
*Supplies Needed* • • • • • • • • • • •
1 latex balloon 7-10 large fabric doilies – I found mine at Michaels for $1.50 a piece Fabric stiffener – buy a few bottles because you’ll use a lot Large bowl Latex gloves for handling wet doilies (optional) Plastic wrap Needle Glue gun Scissors Rope, decorative ribbon, lace, bows, etc. Small basket or box
Step 1: Blow up balloon to desired size. To hold it in place, tape it to the table or put it in your basket.
Step 2: Pour fabric stiffener into a large bag or bowl. Dip a doily in and fully saturate it. Squeeze out the excess, and place it on top of balloon, making sure all edges are completely flat. Repeat this process, overlapping the edges until the entire balloon is covered. If doilies start to slide off, put plastic wrap around balloon to hold them in place. This will slow down the drying time, so as soon as the doilies seem to be set in place (a few hours) remove the plastic wrap. Allow about 24 hours for drying time. 5 Step 3: Make sure the doilies are completely dry. Using a needle, carefully pop the balloon and remove it. If any areas start to detach, hot glue them back together. You now have your balloon top ready!
Step 4: Starting at the top of balloon, measure 4

pieces of rope down to desired length for where you want the basket to hang. Evenly space and hot glue the rope to the top and down the sides. Glue the ends to the inside corners of the basket.
Step 5: Get creative and add your ribbons and bows. Use hot glue to attach everything.
Step 6: Thread a piece of rope through two holes in the doilies up top and tie it in a bow. I screwed an eye hook into the ceiling and hung it from there.

A Farmhouse Dining Room With Vintage Charm

reativity and character fill Deborah’s dining room from B Vintage. As you enter the space you are greeted with significant letters that define the room for its exact purpose: eating. The wood tones that grace this room are varying in shade. They are weathered and loved, a feature that describes this room well. Many of the pieces have been thrifted

Written by: Annie Anderson and handed down, each carrying stories of their own. They are used and yet they are treasured, and as a result they are priceless. While shopping for her furniture on a budget, Deborah has found ways to make her house a home. She has thought outside the box with her design plans and created statement pieces that could not be bought.
One such example is the ladder/light fixture that so eloquently hangs above their handmade farmhouse table. Furniture has been restored or painted to perfectly fit in, as if it always belonged there. Specifically, her grandmother’s white hutch and the chicken wire that adorns it, which was a special addition from her grandfather’s farm. Or the intricate sidebar rescued before it was nearly thrown out by a sweet couple no longer in need of it.

Combining metal dining chairs with a rustic bench helps define this spot, giving it an industrial farmhouse style. Romantic elements enhance the space allowing it to feel floral and fresh. Scrolling lines, pretty blooms and bright linens accent her place making it a heartfelt home. The table is fit for a feast,
but more importantly it is made to accommodate those whom she loves. Deborah has done a lovely job finding her style, rather than following rules or trends, it speaks of her likes and tastes. This is something to strive for when creating spaces of our own, that they may truly be ours.

the month Hi Terri! Can you tell us a little about what inspired you to start your business? Always being an entrepreneur and loving to create things for myself and my home, I decided to make that one extra, (which was a burlap and white cotton ruffled shower curtain) and see if anyone else would like it too and actually pay for it? Well, that’s all it took, and I was off and running. I began making items that I liked and thought if they didn’t sell, they would go perfect in my house. Much to my surprise, other people had the same taste in home decor as I did. It has evolved to over 500 items from burlap shower curtains to boxwood wreaths. Personalized items have been a big hit, from prints to pillows and family tree items. A lot of my inspiration for new products comes from my customers, they love to give me an idea that they have and let me create it for them. I love seeing an item that inspires me and then adding my own twist to it and making it my own. Every items gets that handmade feel. I opened Simply French Market in May 2010 and have had close to 14,000 sales to date. Needing some help with orders I enlisted my husband Andy to take over the shipping duties. Those duties turned in to teaching him how to sew and now he’s working side by side with me every day. He’s sometimes referred to as the “Burlap King”. Seeing as we go through hundreds of yards of burlap every month. People think we’re crazy but it works for us. We’ve been married for 25 years and this has given us the ability to be there for our three sons as they grow. Can you tell us a little about the products you offer? Here at Simply French Market, you can get your shower curtains, curtain panels or valances for your rustic, beach, cottage or farmhouse decor. Add a few personalized prints and pillows from a variety of fabrics, add a bit of green with a boxwood wreath and not to forget the family tree items for the person in your life who has everything.

Do you do custom orders/designs? Almost all my items can be customized to some extent. Everything is made to order! You can choose your fabrics, fonts, trims, lengths, widths, and more. What is the turnaround time for an order? My pillows and prints are usually 2-4 days, shower curtain and curtain panels are approx. one week. You can always ask if you need it for a particular time. Do you ship worldwide or just to the US? I do ship to Canada (not all items have Canada on them yet). Just ask, I will get it done for you. What was your main inspiration to start a small business? We are attempting to create a more back to basics lifestyle for our family through crafting, gardening, homeschooling, raising a few dairy goats and a flock of chickens and ducks. Audrey laid the foundation for Wood and Button about ten years ago. It happened gradually, like most things do, but she began making a few items to give as gifts, which lead to selling a few things, which started the ball rolling towards launching her own craft company in 2008. Rory and Audrey Joyce of Wood and Button operate a home based craft company specializing in handmade wooden and fabric items for your home and kitchen. They are a husband and wife team living on a small homestead in the foothills of North Carolina with two children. Let’s learn more about this amazing duo!

Do you create all designs yourself? When it comes to sewing and even making spoons, it is difficult to create a design that is 100% original. Most of our designs have certainly been inspired by the countless other crafters from around the world that have perfected certain designs. We try to put a recognizable touch into everything that we make. The highest compliment that we get is when someone can recognize our work without looking at the tag. Audrey sews a number of high quality items including one of a kind bags, aprons, and baby blankets. She also created a line of reversible and reusable fabric coffee sleeves for those disposable coffee house cups. Each coffee cuff has two different designer fabrics and a button on each side which allows you to customize your daily cup and say “No thank you� to the disposable cardboard sleeve at your local cafe. Rory is creating wooden kitchenware using original and traditional designs. The goal is to be beautiful, functional and last a lifetime. Much of the woods that we use come from local Maple, Cherry and Black Walnut trees. A neighbor may need a fallen tree cut up and hauled off and we can use the wood for projects and also for fire wood. A win win! We also purchase some of the more exotic woods from local woodworking shops. Our favorite item is the wooden coffee scoop. A coffee scoop or spoon is created by splitting a log down the middle, removing the inner most portion called the pith, drawing the spoon outline onto the wood and cutting the rough shape out with a saw. From there they are shaped by hand and the bowl part of the spoon is removed with metal gouges and spoon carving knives. Each piece is sanded glassy smooth and finished with a homemade mixture of walnut oil and beeswax.
Do you have another job besides running your store? Audrey is now a full time stay at home mom, homeschool teacher, crafter and countless other titles associated with running a small family farm. She learned to sew and crochet as a child from her mom and grandmother and continued to use those skills mending and sewing when opportunities presented themselves. Using those skills to start her own business has allowed her to be “job free� for over 6 years. Rory is the wood worker of the team and creates coffee scoops, kitchen utensils, cutting boards and other wooden crafts from local and exotic hardwoods. He currently works a day job 4 days a week but hopes to one day become a full time crafter and homesteader. Do you create custom orders? We set up a craft booth at many festivals around the state of North Carolina as well as at the Hickory Farmers Market in downtown Hickory, NC during the months of April through November. We currently sell our goods online through our Etsy shop and are also very active on Instagram. We are happy to take special requests and custom orders. Many items may be created from start to finish within a week or so. Most items found in our Etsy shop or on previous Instagram posts may not be available currently, but can be always recreated.

Spring is finally here and it’s my favorite time of the year! The smell of fresh morning air, blooming flowers, and the sight of green grass is such a joy. It is a new season for many things including spring cleaning, house projects, fresh landscaping, and even time for more DIY projects with warmer weather rolling in.
Spring is the best part of the year for this old house and it is when the curb appeal is in full affect. With the spring rain pouring in, the luscious grass and old trees turn a gorgeous green that surrounds the brick house. When the dogs aren’t running around and playing outside, they can be found soaking up the sun in the family’s sunroom. In fact, Who doesn’t dream of living in a charming the sunroom is one of the whole family’s old house? When I first laid eyes on Karen favorite places to hang out. Karen, her Wilshire’s 1908 home, I was in love with its husband and their children spend charm. Old houses always have a story to countless hours gathered around the tell and Karen and her family have a great table playing boards games, laughing, one. When dogs aren't trailing behind her, Karen can be found updating and DIYing her home. She started her sunroom transformation last year by updating it with white paint, new furniture and a DIY game table. The sunroom is perfect on a quiet morning with the bright sunshine pouring in through the windows. Karen loves to sit and enjoy the morning sun with a hot cup of coffee. She likes to keep her home neutral, comfortable, and decorated with lots of greenery. Fresh flowers can be found in almost every room, bringing the outdoors in. It is easy to enjoy an outdoor space and sunroom as beautiful as Karen’s but, I have a feeling most of us aren’t that lucky to live in a charming old home. However, adding greenery (real or faux), fresh flowers, flowing drapery, lightening up a wall color, and bringing in durable fabrics, and texture are great ways to bring life to an indoor space. ~How would you best describe your design style?
I consider it to be kind of a traditional style touches of rustic farmhouse with a handful of small more modern twists. I think most often I describe it as being kind of a casual elegance. I like each space to feel visually appealing, but also welcoming and soothing as well. ~Do you have formal design education? I studied at the New York School of Interior Design for a year before transferring and ultimately getting my degree in graphic design.
~What inspires you today? Oh goodness, I find inspiration just about everywhere - from just watching my kids, family and friends to exploring nature, our beautiful town, the beautiful towns in New England that we visit regularly, perusing magazines, Instagram, Pinterest, local shops and even places like Target - ha! ~How long have you been an interior designer?

Because I don't have a degree in interior design I wouldn't consider myself an interior designer - more of a graphic designer who loves to decorate - ha! And I have been out of school and doing that for over ten years now.
~What makes a happy home in your eyes? Knowing that our little family and all of our extended family and friends always feel welcome and know that our home is always open to them. And because I am a little OCD sometimes, I'd say for me a tidy home is a happy home too - ha!
~Do you have any design rules? Honestly, not really. I mean I think focusing on scale, texture and color is all important. But ultimately I think you just want to focus on using pieces that you love or that mean something to you and not take it too seriously, or worry too much about it being or looking perfect. ~What are some of your favorite completed design projects? I am really happy with how our kitchen and family room turned out - we really updated the space and it's now the space we spend 90% of our day! I also am happy with our den which we just added some finished touches to this week as well as our dining room which we've been playing around with quite a bit lately. ~What is your favorite book or magazine on design? website you visit often? My favorite magazine is Country Living. ~What is the most frustrating aspect of your job as a designer? And the most rewarding one?
I guess just that I feel like I always have so many ideas in my head but am not always able to bring them to life due to time or budget. The most rewarding part of a project is definitely adding those final touches once you've finished a project - just those last little finishing touches and once it's done stylizing it a bit with fresh flowers and taking photographs of the finished product - that's definitely the most rewarding part I think! ~If you had no limit of money or resources, describe the type of space you would create.? I would love to either do a beautiful country farmhouse from top to bottom with a slight industrial twist with lots of beautiful warm woodwork mixed in with lots of whites and blacks for a elegant yet still warm look or do a very traditional historical type home and modernize it a bit with updates kitchen and bathrooms but still keep the traditional and classic type feel to it overall. ~What are your favorite types of design elements to work with? (paint colors, textures, etc.) I love working with fabrics and rugs and adding as much texture as possible to a room and then using paint colors to accent and pull out the best colors from the textiles in the room. ~What advice do you have for young designers reading this interview?
You want to make your clients happy and make the space feel like it is an extension of them but it's also fun to add your stamp to it as well, as that is why they hired you for the touch you bring to the design. Also, just have fun. Pretty much everyone has slightly different taste so what one person might absolutely love another could hate and that doesn't mean the design was bad or wrong. It's just a matter of taste so if you and your clients are happy with the space once it's done don't let any of the negative comments or opinions people have bother you! ~Where do you reside (general area) family dynamic? I am married to a college basketball coach and we live in Virginia with our two young girls, Lillian and Lorelei. We spend quite a bit of time in New England as well as our business is run out of New Hampshire and most of my family lives up there.

Imagine this... A beautiful March day, a bright sun shining from blue skies. There were no sounds coming through my windows (because it was so beautiful out, I could open my windows on what was technically still in the winter season!). And then I heard her. I stopped and listened. And there it was again. I ran to the window to try to see her, because I knew that song well, a song that I hadn't heard in quite a few months. And even though I couldn't find her, I knew that there was a little robin somewhere in my yard... content to stay where she was, out of sight, safe, and from the sound of her song....happy. Happy to be back home, enjoying and rejoicing in what turned out to be a most perfect day.
I think you know that pure joy, pure excitement that I felt the moment I heard her song. It meant that the end of winter was near, and if the robins are back in my area, I could not blame them. It has been a gorgeous January through March so far. Don't get me wrong, we've had snow. We've even had ice. But it has been so short lived, that even a sweet little robin probably could have lived through it unscathed.
After hearing that little robin's song, I became more aware. Aware of the smell of the earth in the air. Aware of the buds on the trees, and the parsley...yes, my parsley...coming to life on the 50 degree days that we've had. Perfect.
I can honestly say it has been a perfect winter. Mother Nature did what she had to do, but got it done quickly, and painlessly. Perfect. Mr. Webster defines the word as: "having all the required or desirable elements, qualities, or characteristics; as good as it is possible to be" And that's exactly how I can define this past winter. It had all of the required elements, but on the more desirable side. Perfect. And with the onset of spring, my mindset moves to the lighter fare of spring and summer...eating light meals of fresh vegetables...and desserts with fruit. Like cheesecake and berries. The perfect cheesecake with berries, to be exact. The trick to this cheesecake is to take it out of the oven while it's still a touch jiggly in the center. Too often, we hesitate to take it out of the oven for fear of it being raw in the middle, but trust me, that's the time you want to take it out. Think of jiggling a bowl of gelatin. That's the consistency you're looking for. It will finish baking after it’s been taken out of the oven! And while I made this a double layer cheesecake for looks, I found that I really love a double layer cheesecake! Topped with a variety of fresh berries, it's not only beautiful, but the light and fluffy sweet cheesecake filling is the perfect dessert for a perfect spring evening. My wish for you, my friends, is the joy of a perfect spring day, with the sun shining in a blue sky...and the happy song of a robin filling the trees.

I know this sounds crazy, but
from the very first moment I saw Kathleen’s home on Instagram, I just knew that we would be instant friends! I could tell from the photos that Kathleen loves a bright white interior, pops of beautiful colors, and special heirloom pieces. Now that I've had some time to get to know Kathleen better, I was right from the very beginning, we have become fast friends! Come on in and let me introduce you to this precious woman and her gorgeous home!
Kathleen grew up in a very modest home and is one of 9 children! She learned at an early age how to love things that didn’t cost a lot of money. She enjoys reading lots and lots of books and playing the piano. I love the way she has incorporated those loves into her decor. Kathleen and her husband have had quite the busy life! They are parents to five children, seven beautiful grandchildren, and have lived in 16 different homes in 7 different states! They now live in Utah so they can be close to their children and grandchildren. Family is very important to Kathleen and number one on her “favorite things to do” list is getting together with her siblings, parents, and her own children and grandchildren. Sounds absolutely perfect to me! With all of the moving and home building that Kathleen has experienced, she has learned quite a few things about decorating. She and her husband have either built or renovated 13 of their homes! Kathleen believes, “Beauty can be found or made no matter where you live or what style of home you are in.” Because of her many years on the east coast, and all the history there, she developed a love for antiques and vintage items. Having said that, she appreciates a chippy, banged-up vintage piece as much as a beautifully preserved antique piece, just because of the history it carries with it. Kathleen's design sense was honed through lots of practice, formal design classes, and experimenting over the years with different styles. Because she is so talented and has so much experience, I picked her brain to get great design ideas and tips for all of us! Kathleen shared, “I like to group my selected objects together for display - I think they have much more impact that way versus being sprinkled around a room. Even though I love vintage objects, I think they need to be balanced with clean and fresh decor to keep a home from looking like a dusty old museum.”
She also shared that she loves to use lots of white in her home because it keeps the rooms looking fresh, modern, and clean, even with the vintage pieces mixed in. She also added that to keep a room looking fresh, don’t fill every available surface. Kathleen believes a home feels most like a home when the personalities of those who live there shine through. When she is designing a room for someone else, she tries to find out THEIR interests and passions, so that she can make sure the room exudes their personality instead of hers. Kathleen is a collector of many beautiful items. She absolutely loves old books and uses them ALL the time in her decor. In addition, she loves vintage items, especially textiles. Her favorites are quilts, embroidered pillowcases, and towels. You will see clocks, milk glass, scales, and vintage floral paintings scattered throughout her beautiful home.
As you can see, Kathleen’s home is absolutely stunning! But the best part, is that she is a beautiful person as well. Her love for her family, her faith in God, and her kind welcoming spirit are all displayed in the house that she calls ‘home’.

Doesn’t the saying go something like, “The couple that up-cycles together, stays together?” This contractor’s wife, Patty, @1greenacreslane on Instagram, believes her husband’s junk pile can be seen from Google Earth! He brings home everything from every job. Since she doesn’t like to waste anything, she needed to find a way to use it. What started as a way to eliminate waste, became a fun hobby for the both of them. EVERYTHINGHOMEMAGAZINE.COM | APRIL 2016
Patty believes her up-cycle inspiration is found just about anywhere, but her father, the “Upcycling King”, was reusing way before it was the trendy thing to do. As the youngest of nine children, this art of creating something new from something old often becomes a necessity.
“I learned, early on, that with my husband’s help, we could have fun together and create some really neat pieces.” -Patty
In her husband’s junk pile were two large pieces of wood. The first piece they added some coat hooks to and it is now hung by their front door. It’s beautiful and functional. The other, she painted her Instagram name on and proudly displays it in the kitchen.

The local salvage shop supplements their “junk” pile. After a recent trip she found the top portion of an old door. They crafted and attached some candle holders under each window. It was then finished with a custom mix of chalk paint.

At the same shop, she found a mirror that needed a lot of TLC. He created a shelf to go under the mirror and she painted it. They attached three smaller hooks to complete the piece. The pieces they create together, not only use up their surplus construction debris, but also challenges their creativity. This has resulted in beautiful projects and a stunning home.

ollie, from Design Loves Detail, daughter’s bedroom caught my eye when I saw her statement painted floral walls. They stopped me in my tracks and I shared the photo on my Instagram. It got so many compliments, I had to find out the details of this kids space. Everyone loved the floral wall that was inspired by Rifle Paper Co. She wanted to use their wallpaper, but none of their prints were large enough scale, so she made her own hand-painted version that was inspired by their florals.

Mollie believes kid’s spaces need to be imaginative and colorful. She wanted to create a space that was girly, but would also be fun for a toddler or even a teen so that she wouldn’t have to redesign in a year or two. Her daughter loves lots of color and spending time outside in nature, so the floral wall made a great backdrop and she loved the idea too. She provided plenty of solicited and unsolicited feedback since she’s quite opinionated, even at the age of 3. Her daughter has been pretty thrilled with having her own “flower garden wall”!
Mollie incorporated a lot of cute baskets & boxes into the room to keep the space clean and organized. Her daughter is at an age where it’s fun to put things inside of boxes or baskets, it works out quite well to hide the less “pretty” stuff. She actually calls the little suitcases on the shelves her “treasure boxes” so that worked out perfectly.
This room is 90% second hand! Mollie shopped yard sales all summer and picked up a lot of the pieces, and also found some on Craig’s List. The beauty of that is that this entire room cost about $500. Even the vintage light fixture was purchased from an estate sale for just $10. The only things Mollie bought new were the sheets, pillows, and rug!

- One of the perks of living in Southern California is that we usually have pretty good weather. My family loves to take advantage of that and eat outside whenever we have the chance. Most of us will start to experience some pleasant weather this spring (hopefully) so I want to share with you an easy way to set up a small table for two out in your own backyard.
Simple touches make the difference!
I don't have a backyard in my home (just a front yard) but while my family and I were visiting my parents, I noticed how beautiful and fragrant the orange tree was out in their yard. I immediately thought how enjoyable it would be to have lunch under that tree. I grabbed a blanket, pillows, wine glasses, dishes and a couple napkins and took them outside. I created a small table using an old framed painting on top of two plastic crates I found in the garage and just covered it with a sheet! You could also use a coffee table or wooden pallets; especially if you want to fit more people around the table.
For my centerpiece, I made a runner by tying together some branches that I collected in the yard. To make my table feel a bit more luxurious I added a pair of crystal candlesticks I found in my mother's bedroom. For some unexpected interest, I decided to tape some foliage to the stems of the wine glasses. It was a great experience being able to eat under that beautiful tree. I especially enjoyed my makeshift table. Having a flat, raised surface made it a bit more comfortable to eat on the floor. But, the best part about this lunch is that I used what was readily available to create a fun outdoor picnic for two.
I encourage you to take advantage of the great outdoors. It can be your local park, your backyard, front yard or even the beach. There is no need to go out and buy anything fancy, either. Start with what you have, get inspiration from your surroundings, and create something special for you and your loves ones to enjoy!

ave you ever read that sweet children’s book If You Give a Mouse a Cookie? The story goes, "If you give a mouse, a cookie, he's going to ask for a glass of milk. When you give him the milk, he'll probably ask you for a straw"... and so on. It's a circular tale about a series of events happening all because of a cookie. Our patio makeover is titled, "If You Give a Lady a Patio Set". Seriously. You see, my parents gave me their hand-me-down patio set complete with rust and rot and so began the entire patio makeover. I am always up for a challenge and this one would add an outdoor space to our home that my whole family of 8 and I could enjoy. After repurposing and building most everything in our design, it just goes to show that you don't have to break the bank to get a custom look.

We built our harvest table and benches using online plans and our patio furniture was the up-cycled set paired with a coffee table made from pallets, siding, and a couple of antique wash tubs. I even created a corner table to look like it had been made of shipping crates. All of this was completed on a tight budget. You can see more of our makeover in my patio reveal complete with tutorials.
I will have to say that aside from the furniture, my favorite quirky addition to our space was the orb candle fixtures I made from four hanging flower baskets I found at a garage sale for a couple of dollars. My passion for junk and being thrifty came from my parents and grandparents. My family has humble roots and worked tirelessly for everything they have. When they achieved their goal and were living comfortably, they still continued to shop thrift stores and estate sales to look for the good in treasures otherwise deemed useless. Try thinking outside the box when shopping at thrift stores and garage sales. These planters turned orb candle fixtures are brilliant! EVERYTHINGHOMEMAGAZINE.COM | APRIL 2016
To me, there is nothing like taking a cast-off item and giving it new life. It is the epitome of the "waste not, want not" mentality that everything can be useful to some degree. So you most definitely will find me checking out curbside treasures (I call it trashure), thrift stores, and the like. You can see what I do with such things on my blog and in my shop. I have no doubt you will come away inspired!

Culinary Design ".
There, she taught cooking classes for children and adults. She also has been a food stylist, and featured for several years on The Fine Living Channel for Children's Cooking segments, as well as taught classes for Williams Sonoma and Sur La Table. Janice said she "sort of " retired to be able to spend more time with her grandson. When speaking to Janice, you can instantly tell her passions are her family, and being creative in the kitchen as well as garden. Everything she touches seems to have beams of sunshine sprouting from them. She completely loves what she does, and it radiates off of her. Completely infectious. Janice wanted to bring something so special to our readers. Something new, and fun, that you can keep, or giveaway in hopes to make someone else's day. To help ring in spring she is showing us her May Day Fresh Flower Bags. These little cuties are sure to leave you and any one around them smiling. I know when she told me her tradition she had with her mom, it left me feeling all warm and fuzzy. This is what she had to say: "When I was a little girl I always looked forward to the evening of April 30 th. May Day flowers were to be arranged and delivered in celebration of May Day…May 1st! My mom would help me make little bouquets of flowers from our garden to hang on our neighbors’ doors or gates. After dark we would quietly sneak up to their doors and tie little cloth baskets filled with garden flowers with ribbons and twine. Traditions are varied from country to country but according to my mom if I delivered May Day flowers to a boys’ home and he caught me delivering them …he had the right to kiss me! Needless to say, when I was a little girl I avoided the boys and delivered to “just the neighbors” instead! May Day traditions have almost disappeared over the years, I still enjoy this old tradition and I hope maybe this will encourage you to make your own May Day baskets with your children to share with friends and family! SUPPLIES NEEDED • An assortment of fresh flowers and greens
• Poly bags 4” X 6” (heavy duty 6 mil. Is best. I order mine from Paper Mart)
• Fabric pieces cut to 8 ¼” X 11 ¼”
• Fabric glue (Aleene’s Fast Grab Tacky Glue works well)
• Pom pom trim cut to 8 ¼” X 11 ¼” • Ribbon cut to 20 inches (2 pieces per bag)

• Scissors ***All of these supplies, except the fresh flowers, can be found at Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft stores.
Step 1.
Cut your fabric and pom pom trim into 8 1/4” X 11 ¼” pieces Cut your ribbon into 20 inch pieces
Step 2.
Fold and glue the long side of the fabric down ½ inch.
Step 3.
Glue the pom pom trim along the top edge of the fabric. Allow glue to dry for about three minutes.
Step 4.
Fold the fabric in half, pom pom trim facing inside. You may now either sew or glue the sides and bottom of the fabric together to finish the bag.
Step 5.
Glue the pieces of ribbon to the inside of the bags, 2 inches deep for strength. Tie the ends of the ribbon together to form a handle.
Step 6.
Place a poly bag (water tight plastic bag) into the fabric bag.
Step 7.
Choose some fresh flowers with your kiddos from your garden or farmers market. Choose an assortment of colors to mix and match with your fabric. Snip them into lengths of about 10 inches.
Step 8.
Have your little ones place little bouquets of fresh flowers into the May Day bags. Add about ½ cup of water to keep the blossoms fresh!
