or some reason, if you say family farmhouse and over a century old in the same sentence, I get all giddy. Even without pictures, my mind goes to work painting beautiful visions. I begin to think of the stories that could be told by generations of people that have occupied Exposed ductwork the house and my mind paints pictures allows for higher of shiplap and farm sinks. For Bryanna ceilings. Durnwald, the mental pictures are real and don’t have to be imagined.

View looking in before..

Contain kitchen essentials neatly by using a rustic, wire basket!

Bryanna and her husband now own this beautiful Georgia farmhouse that 4 generations of her family lived in before her. Her great, great grandparents were the original owners and Bryanna grew up there. When I learned of the history of this home, I knew I had to feature it. It’s simply a beautiful home with a beautiful story. Before deciding to purchase the home from her parents, Bryanna and her husband lived in the home for a while. With a goal of making the house their dream home and with plans to complete renovations, they purchased the home. With the home dating back to the late 1800s, they not only knew that renovations would be a huge undertaking, but they also knew that structural changes would require expertise and the help of a professional. The majority of their renovation budget was spent

removing walls to create an open floor plan. The removal of a wall leading into the kitchen opened up the space and was the beginning of this gorgeous kitchen renovation.

rest of the home, so a plan was put into place to make the house flow from one room to the next. When you have a 100+ year old farmhouse, you have to have a farmhouse kitchen! But to get that, they had to put themselves and their creativity Blue cabinets once filled the kitchen, to work. They had no other choice, but were painted white before any because the kitchen makeover had to be Exposed ductwork pre-renovation pictures were taken. The done on a next-to-nothing budget that allows for higher kitchen didn’t match the character of the this newly married couple could afford. ceilings.

Open shelving offers a beautiful way to display your dishes and antique finds!

A focal point of the kitchen are the three windows over the kitchen sink. To make this wall stand out, they carried the shiplap from the rest of the house into the kitchen. The upper cabinets on that wall were removed and open shelving was added. Three barn lights above the windows were also added that complete that wall perfectly! I’m swooning over this wall! A must for any farmhouse kitchen is a farm sink. However, the budget was super tight and at one point Bryanna thought she would have to do without the farm sink. Luckily Ikea came through for them and they were able to get a farm sink without breaking the bank!

Although they knew the white laminate countertops had to be replaced, they were not sure what type of surface they wanted. After looking into several options, Bryanna kept coming back to the idea of concrete countertops. The thought of pouring their own originally sounded a bit too risky, but after doing a little research, she discovered that they could just cover the existing counters with concrete. She managed to convince her husband she wasn’t crazy and away they went! While it was an extremely messy job, it was worth it. They mixed concrete, spread it on the countertops with a drywall spreader, let it dry, sanded it, and repeated the process 3 more times. “They are by no Exposed ductwork means perfect, but they’re concrete! They’re not supposed to be!” allows for higher ceilings.

Having a center island was high on the list of must haves, so they reconfigured the kitchen a little and moved the peninsula to make room for the fun green island. It was an old work bench that her mother-in-law found at a local antique store. The island fits perfectly in the long, narrow kitchen. It also adds a wonderful pop of color and character! The tile flooring didn’t quite fit in with the updated farmhouse kitchen, so hardwood flooring was installed to match the rest of the hardwood in the home.

This breathtaking family farmhouse was begging to be brought back to its original beauty and that’s just what they did. New family memories will be made here to add to the many that have already been made in years past.

For unique farmhouse lighting, try searching for outdoor light fixtures that can also be used indoors.

Bryanna Durnwald teaches first grade in Cumming, Georgia. She lives there with her husband and two spoiled dogs. They are currently working on finishing up projects around their farmhouse that was renovated in the Fall of 2015. DIY Heart Hangers -BY-

Little Glass Jar Blog Believe it or not, February is one of my favorite months. That’s hard to believe coming from a Midwesterner because it tends to be our coldest and snowiest time of the year. I prefer cold winters over hot summers here in St. Louis any day! However it is not the weather that draws me to this month, it just so happens to be Valentine’s Day that I love. For as long as I can remember I have always loved this special day. I see it as a day not just to celebrate a relationship, but it’s also a good day to get your craftiness on, because Valentine’s Day crafts are seriously so much fun! The tables are being turned on me this month, as I will be sharing my blog Little Glass Jar with all of you, and some easy DIY Heart Hangers for you to display during this month of love!

--Get to know ME! My blog Little Glass Jar began in August of 2014 as a creative outlet for me to explore outside of my full time corporate job. I have always had a passion for decorating/DIY and finally decided I needed a place to put it all! I fell in love with the idea that I could work on my house as I normally would, but also be able to share every project with people who are so kind enough to respond to it and follow along. I would describe my decorating style as modern farmhouse with a mixture of vintage flea market finds. I love the clean farmhouse look with a lot of white ironstone, wood texture, neutral/natural colors, but then I love old, worn, rusted and busted antiques I find at our local flea market. To me there is no better way to spend a weekend than roaming around the country and finding new places to go thrifting. Luckily, my husband doesn’t mind it either! We live in a builder grade house, but slowly we are adding a little charm and character along the way!

Instructions 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Use a heart stencil to trace two heart shapes onto the 1x6 piece of wood Carefully cut out the heart shapes with a jigsaw. Use a sander to smooth any rough edges of the hearts. Stain the hearts with a dark wood stain. Using a sponge brush, dry brush the white paint onto just one side of the stained heart. 6. Use your staple gun to staple a piece of red ribbon to the back side of your painted wood heart. 7. Hang where desired!

I love projects that can be used for different purposes. These DIY Heart Hangers can really be hung anywhere in your house! Hang them on your door knobs, on the inside of a wreath, you can even leave the ribbon off and set them around your home as a decorative piece, on a stack of old books or on your kitchen table with some candles on top. The possibilities are endless!

How could I not?

She has an amazing decor style, she’s not afraid to take chances with design choices, and she’s truly one of the sweetest people ever, always taking the time to answer questions from her friends. I have watched her account grow from 5,000 friends almost two years ago, to the staggering 169,000 faithful friends she has today! She has worked with many big box stores and has been featured on countless Instagram accounts and blogs. Let’s learn about the magic behind this home decor phenomenon!

~How would you best describe your design style? My design style would be best described as all over the place…is that an answer choice? Really though, I love mixing styles to create a unique and interesting home. When you walk into my home, you will see a mix of antique furniture, vintage/reclaimed finds, rich linen fabrics, a few industrial pieces and some unexpected touches. My home is very “collected” and it is constantly changing. You never know what might show up! ~Do you have formal design education? I do not, actually. I studied early childhood development in college but have always loved interior decorating. I can remember being in elementary school and taking all the drawers out of my dresser and desk so I could drag my furniture around my room for a new look. My mom would get so mad thinking I was going to hurt myself...but I kept doing it! My mom always had a great eye for design so I think that rubbed off on me! In college I did not want to study design because I didn’t have an interest in the architectural aspect of it. I didn’t want to design building layouts or tell someone where a support beam should go…I just wanted to do the fun stuff like shopping for cute throw pillows and styling bookshelves! ~What inspires you today? Other people that have found out what they are great at and have run with it! It is nice to see so many people who have discovered their true passion and have made something from it with hard work and dedication. I believe we are all born with a gift and it is important to find out what that gift is and share it with the world!

~How long have you been an interior designer? I have been "in the business" for 13 years as an interior stylist. I took five years off when my youngest daughter was born so I could stay home with her and really soak up the baby years. When she started kindergarten 3 years ago, I got back into it. During the last three years I have switched gears a little bit due to having some amazing opportunities come my way. Right now I am working with several large home decor retailers on various projects! It really has been a dream come true for me! ~What motivated you to become an interior designer? What is funny is that the opportunity sort of fell in my lap. When my oldest daughter, who is now 18, was in kindergarten, I hosted her birthday party at our home. A few of the moms inquired about who decorated my house and the next thing I knew, they were hiring me to decorate theirs. From word of mouth and referrals, my styling business took off! Once I had my second daughter 5 years after that, I took time off as mentioned above. When she was 5, we moved into our current house and I started sharing pictures of projects I was working on in our new home on social media. I also started my blog, Whimsy Girl Design. Never in a million years did I think anyone other than friends or family would follow my blog or my social media accounts, but I started noticing that people were following me and commenting on my photos. A few years later, I am blown away by the amount of people who have taken an interest inHebbring my work and the opportunities that Christine have come my wayPainted from it! It is really hard to Jennifer Murray/ Fox even call it a job because I love what I do so much!

~Do you have any design rules? Yes, I have one...and it is not to follow any design rules! I am a “design rule breaker”...I do not believe in design rules because I believe design is such a personal thing and if you love something, who has the right to tell you that you are wrong? Besides, it seems as though the “rules” are always changing…remember when brass was out…and now it is all the rage.

~What are some of your favorite completed design projects? I love our breakfast nook wall...I bought a huge cubby shelf from an antique dealer before our home was completed and had no clue what I would use it for. The minute we moved in, a light bulb went off and I knew it was the perfect piece for the huge wall. Once I knew it was going there, I started brainstorming ideas for the rest of the space and it all came together better than I imagined! We also just completed a master bedroom makeover and I am loving that space! I must admit that it takes me forever to complete a space because I love finding unique pieces for each room. It pays off to be patient and it is always fun treasure hunting for those special additions!

We love how Lindsay displays dried elements for extra layers of texture and style!

Stay the course. Don't let others discourage you. You will always run into nay sayers and doubters. You know the type.. glass half empty.you Disregard this ~What is your favorite book or magazine on design? Website visit often? negativity.

I love Pinterest but I try not to spend too much time on there because it is a black hole! I will search “party dip recipe” and four hours later I am ready to rip off my kitchen cabinets and create open shelving…and for those reading this, I know you do the same thing. Don’t you? I used to read a lot of design blogs before I started my own. I still browse through them when I have free time and wish I could do it more. There are so many talented people out there and I love seeing people do what they love!! Currently, Instagram is where I connect with a lot of people who share the same passion for decorating. Although it isn’t a magazine or a book, it is full of inspiration! And because you mentioned book…I can share that I have a crazy fun, “pinch me I am dreaming” announcement coming soon….stay tuned for that!! I cannot wait to share!

~What advice do you have for young designers reading this interview? I feel silly giving advice because I do not feel qualified at all, but here it goes…just go for it! If you are passionate about something and work hard, it can become anything you want it to be! Document your work, share you work via social media, find people who share your passion and see what happens! Make sure that during the process you stay authentic to who you are and your designs reflect that.

~What is the most frustrating aspect of your job as a designer? And the most rewarding one?

Bed & Nightstands from Arhaus

Hmmm...I think the most frustrating aspect would be when you know what type of piece you need for a client or for you own project and you just cannot find it. As mentioned above, I love using unique (vintage, antique, custom made, reclaimed, refurbished) pieces in my work Hmmm...I thinkfor the most frustrating so sourcing those items can be tedious. aspect be Iwhen you know what A lotwould of times will picture the perfect typepiece of piece need forbut a client or for and ityou won't exist, I usually find that does thejust trick! yousomething own project and you cannot find The most rewarding just waking it. As mentioned above, aspect I loveisusing up each day loving whatcustom I do! It really unique (vintage, antique, made,is a dream job and I am just so thankful for reclaimed, refurbished) pieces in my work every opportunity that has come my way!

so sourcing for those items can be tedious. A lot of times I will picture the ~If you had no limit of money or perfect piece and it won't exist, but I Clock via At Home Store resources, describe the type of space usually find something that does the you would create. trick! The most rewarding aspect is just waking This is an interesting question because I up each day loving what I do! It really is a really believe that if money weren't an dream job and I am just so thankful for issue, anyone could design a gorgeous space. What I love most when styling a every opportunity that has come my way! room is the challenge of not having an endless supply of money...the bargain shopping, the reworking of items that are currently there to create a new look, adding in just a few new touches to update a space....that is what I love to do! With that said, if I had no limit on budget or resources, you would find me antiquing through France filling up containers to ship back to my home! Maybe one day...a girl can dream, right?

~What are your favorite types of design elements to work with? Being a neutral loving girl, I love creating interest in a room using textures. For example, our living room has a very bland color scheme of off white, mixed metals and shades of gray. I absolutely love the color scheme, but I knew in order to create the feel I wanted the room to have, it was going to take some special touches. To keep it feeling warm and interesting, I’ve incorporated a variety of items that all bring in texture. A wool rug is layered on top of a jute rug to add softness and dimension to our hard wood floors. Our stone fireplace is adorned with shag pillows and a faux fur throw to create a welcoming feel. Our rustic wood shelves are styled with glass bottles and faux fern plants for a natural look. I used a sleek, industrial metal coffee table to give the room an unexpected element. So in my home, texture is number one. I also love incorporating at least one conversation piece in each room. For me, those are mainly vintage finds like our old library card catalog. You wouldn’t believe the conversations that have come up when people see that piece in my home. Those types of finds are a great way to add character to a room and it is always fun to have a unique piece!

Lindsay’s home is filled with unique one of a kind pieces including this vintage card catalog.

~Where do you reside? What is your family dynamic? I reside in Frisco, TX, which is just north of Dallas, TX , with my husband of almost 19 years, our two daughters, Ashtyn (18) and Channing (8) and our Chihuahua, Lilly. When I am not rearranging my home or restyling bookshelves you can find me shopping at the area antique malls, eating chips and queso, watching college football (Go Sooners) or cheering on my daughters in their many activities!

Thank you so much Lindsay! I know our readers loved getting to know you better! For more home decor and design inspiration please visit Lindsay at her blog and on her Instagram account. EVERYTHINGHOMEMAGAZINE.COM | FEB 2016

photo corner Monthly Photography Tips And Tricks

Smartphone photography, iPhoneography, mobile photography or whatever you want to call it, it's clear that taking great pictures with a phone has become a thing now. What does that mean, exactly? It means that people are creating works of art using their smartphones, and those pieces also go up in galleries or are made into prints. That's the extreme end, of course, but on the other we have Instagram photos that look totally killer. 1 Get Close and Fill the Viewfinder

.

Sometimes when you try to capture the big, all-encompassing picture you miss out on a really great photo. When you’re too far away from your subject, you get a tiny, unrecognizable figure and far too much background. Instead, make sure you get close and fill the viewfinder. Avoid zoom, which can reduce the image quality.

2. Crop, Never Zoom

Written by: Kelly Fellin

Most smartphone cameras have the ability to zoom in while taking a photo. As the overwhelming majority of smartphones don't have an optical zoom module, this zoom feature digitally zooms, simply enlarging and cropping the output from the sensor before the photo is captured. To get the best photos from your camera, never use the zoom feature. Zooming before capturing does not allow you to reframe the image after the fact. Written by: Kelly Fellin

One of my favorite things about featuring small business owners is the unique items I find in the process. Rhonda Hallstrom, owner of Hallstrom Home, is a prime example. Her hand painted mirrors and home décor items are not only beautiful, but they are unique and will add the perfect touch of elegance to anyone's home. I asked Rhonda a few questions about how her business came about and what she offers and her response was inspiring!

the month What was your main inspiration to begin a small business and when did you first start?

I started my small business 2 years ago on a whim and a dream. I was approaching a time in my life when my baby of seven kids was going to school soon and I wanted something to keep me busy. I have always dreamed of having my own business since a child and with an empty nest approaching, I took the jump. What items do you offer?

I primarily sell mirrors, however, my custom painted furniture, candle holders, home decor and beautiful shower curtains have really been a big hit as well. I love to offer a variety of products so that I can keep my creativity going and to be able to help decorate one's home with a variety of custom items. What would you say makes your business unique?

One of the biggest selling points that helped propel my shop to success is the quick processing time of 3 to 5 days on most items, and 1 to 2 weeks on large custom mirrors. We also make custom wood shipping boxes for all of our mirrors, for the safest delivery possible. Our smaller home decor items and chalkboards also receive custom made boxes. Customer feedback on our excellent shipping has led to many repeat sales and happy customers.

Do you come up with all the designs yourself?

Most of my designs are created by myself or my assistant Lana, however some are found and I do sell vintage items as well. Can you tell us a little about yourself?

We live in the Pacific Northwest in a classic old Farmhouse that I have dreamed about owning since we were first married. It is unbelievable that this dream actually came true after the previous owners lived here for 38 years. We have seven children however our two oldest boys no longer live here so we are now left with five at home. I can say that my dreams would not have come true had it not been for my hubby. He is the support behind everything that I do.

Do you do custom orders?

I love custom orders. We plan to offer custom sized mirrors later this year. Your gorgeous mirrors are a big part of your home, do you ever find it hard to let them go?

There have been a few mirrors that I've had a hard time letting go of. I remember when I first started, I painted a gorgeous large ornate gold mirror with silver paint. Once this was done, I stood back and just marveled that I could let it go. Just this past month, I sold one of my favorite mirrors to a wonderful repeat customer. Although I fell deeply in love with this custom painted mirror, I happily sent it off knowing it was going to someone special. I now have hundreds of frames and mirrors, so my house has a constant rotation of stylish mirrors that I can change out at whim. Most of my photos are taken in context within my home. I think it helps to show people each item staged in a way that will inspire others to create beautiful homes with purpose. Owning a small business is more work than I would ever have imagined. The reward of having happy customers and lasting friendships drives me to do better each day. Gold Vintage Mirrors Set 2 Ornate Bathroom Mirrors, Large Baroque Hollywood Regency Hanging Mirrors

C Frugal DIY Valentine Banner EVERYTHINGHOMEMAGAZINE.COM | FEB 2016

Written by: Jenna Gentry

ready, set, diy Creative Ideas For Your Next DIY Project It’s February. If you’re like me, you’re still feeling the backlash of your holiday spending. You know, that lifetime’s worth of money you used up in about 4 weeks buying everyone gifts? And now that it’s a new year, you need a fresh start and new home decor that doesn’t cost you any money... Because you have none left, remember? This month’s issue of Everything Home is all about being frugal! So I have a budget AND Valentine’s Day friendly DIY for all of you. This is a fast, simple, inexpensive and adorable project for you to knock out. When I say inexpensive, I mean it. A few dollars can go so far here, you will want to make a bunch of these cuties to go in every room.

Thank you so much to Tammy Groethe for this idea, and for sending over instructions on how to make it!

DIY VALENTINE BANNER Items needed: small white pom poms thick stickers of your choice glue gun needle and thread

How to make: 1. Using your needle and thread, string the pompoms. Be sure to get through the very center of them. 2. Choose your phrase. The adhesive that comes on the stickers isn’t strong enough to keep them on the thread. You will need to get as much of the adhesive off so nothing gets stuck to them. A little lotion or coconut oil will help here. 3. Flip letters upside down and start hot gluing them to the thread between each pompom. Be sure to get them on as straight as you can. Glue near the top of the letters, or they tend to flop over. Tip: to help keep your letters as straight as possible, hang the banner while gluing them on. 4. Hang your garland and admire! This would look great on your decorative ladders, a picture frame, mirror, bookshelf - really anywhere your imagination can think of!

DIY Dining with Alma Arrieta

Written by: Allison Meece

We’ve just finished up the holidays and tax season is right around the corner. I’m sure at this point most of us are saving a little money, whether it be for an upcoming vacation, a graduation trip, or maybe just to replenish our bank accounts. Decorating on a budget can be both rewarding and exciting. It’s fun to think outside the box and still be able to create a space you truly love without breaking the bank. Alma Arrieta has done just that. Alma transformed her dining room and DIYed her heart out to create an amazing space for her and her family. She needed a table that fit the size of the room, provided enough space to walk around, and still have enough seating for her family of five. When she wasn’t able to find a table within her budget or one that fit the room just right, her and her husband decided to build one. Like any DIY project, there were some trial and errors but when it was all finished the table was beautiful, functional, and perfect for their family. One of the biggest budget friendly projects in the dining room was the shiplap wall. Using reclaimed wood from other projects, Alma and her husband cut down the wood, installed it and painted it all in just one weekend. It was a project that Alma had been wanting to do for along time and when the wood became available, her husband surprised her by getting started on the project. She helped of course! You can check out the tutorials on all of Alma’s DIY projects for her dining room on her blog Almafied. EVERYTHINGHOMEMAGAZINE.COM | FEB 2016

farm to table recipes Comfort Food For The Rustic Life

Written by: Prudy Blank EVERYTHINGHOMEMAGAZINE.COM | FEB 2016

I stand corrected. For years, I believed that St. Valentine’s Day was a card company driven holiday…you know… a money making scheme. I scoffed at the idea of a bouquet of flowers and a card, given to me because they HAD to be given to me on that day. To me, a bouquet of flowers given as a surprise on any other day of the year meant much, much more. And I admit, it still does. But I had it all wrong. Valentine’s Day is much more than “boy buying flowers and candy for girl”. Now don’t get me wrong, Valentine’s Day truly is about romance and couples in love, but I have learned that it does go much deeper than that. If we look back at the history, or myth, rather… there was a priest named Valentine, who lived around 300 A.D. in Rome. The Emperor that year was Claudius, and he decided that single men made better soldiers than married men, so he banned marriage.

Valentine, in good faith, continued to marry those young lovers in secret. More of a tragic story, really…but Valentine’s ability to recognize that injustice, and his concern and compassion for those young people gave him the courage to spread his kindness and good will in marrying them, knowing full well that it could mean his ultimate demise. And it did. There was nothing in it for him. He was just righting a wrong. Giving love to those in need. Most myths like this are set up to help people see a deeper meaning. And what is the deeper meaning here? Could we look at Valentine’s Day in a different light? Possibly.

Fall the love *Topromises view full recipe & ofprint options, please theand recipe photo aclick warm cozy home

Maybe it is all about the true nature, and all-encompassing feeling of being loved, and genuinely loving back. It’s a feeling of real peace in your heart, gratitude and appreciation toward those people in your life who mean so much to you…and compassion and goodwill toward people you don’t know. It’s about spreading kindness, peace, and joy to those who might otherwise not have those things in their lives. Love is forever giving, and forever forgiving. It is the simple things in life that make us happy, and a homemade meal would be a perfect gesture to show just how much you care this Valentine’s Day. Surprise your loved ones with a romantic dinner at home with this delicious and classic pasta Bolognese! A labor of love with a most perfect pasta made by hand, topped with a very easy (that tastes like it cooked all day), and delicious meat sauce is a quick and easy way to spend less time in the kitchen, and more time for your romantic evening!

You’ll be so surprised at just how simple this pasta is to make!, The pasta takes no time at all to throw together! Perfectly cooked al-dente it will proudly hold up to the meatiness of the Bolognese sauce. A true Bolognese sauce is simmered on the stove pretty much all day, but I promise that this one will be pasta ready in just about an hour and a half! The sauce is so rich and flavorful, it is one of those meals that have you taking “just one more bite”! Happy Valentine’s Day, my friends. Much love to you all.

Industrial Chic: Finding Love in Progressive Lighting Written by: Keila Bernowitz Photos by: Greer Dinsmore

Greer Dinsmore A trend once allocated to minimalistic and lofty apartments has made its way to suburban homes. Although this particular idiom of lighting originally stems from factories occupied with heavy machinery, it has been regenerated by innovative homemakers to fit everyday lifestyles.

Shop the Look

Welcome to the Arctic Beach House, where every piece of lighting is a conversation starter. “It’s most important to keep in mind the feeling you are trying to create in a room when choosing lighting," Greer tells us. At simple glance the style may appear befitting to solely modern design, however, traditional spaces are equally capable of incorporating selective pieces and making a personal statement. “When shopping for lighting, I would suggest choosing something that adds visual interest without competing with the rest of the decor. Take your time finding the perfect fit and more importantly have a little fun with it”! With that said, let there be light. EVERYTHINGHOMEMAGAZINE.COM | FEB 2016

Industrial Table Lamp Wayfair

Vintage Vibes: You’ll find a most ingenious lamp on the night table in Greer’s bedroom. “I like to choose lighting with a relaxed feel that looks as though it could be vintage.” Utilizing reclaimed wood and metals will enhance the rustic appearance that is distinguishing of this style. When opting to recreate the look, think of items in storage rooms of your own along with searching local flea markets and thrift shops. The irony lies in turning items long forgotten into focal points of decor without having to overspend.

Unconventional Shapes: A sophisticated piece with enough versatility to make a statement. Step out of your comfort zone and try a different shape. Square shades hold a contemporary feel and are proportioned to impress. Unconventional shapes, such as Greer’s star shaped pendant maintain a modern feel, while adding a layer of texture to the existing space. “I love the idea of adding a bit of whimsy to a room with a great lamp or a star shaped pendant”. Exposure: A somewhat raw and unfinished, yet sleek and simple setup that leaves you wanting more. The design is visually appealing to the extent that it can be found in an array of restaurants and diners across the country. No high roofs or ceilings? No problem. You’ll find more and more exposure in standard construction. No matter what the overall style, kitchens are notorious for baring their fixtures. “I love the boldness that a dark metal adds to a white kitchen,” says Greer. Picking the appropriate kind of exposed lighting can come across as overwhelming. Luckily, there’s a multitude to choose from, with options for everyone.

Dashing Pendants: A daring pendant or two goes a long way and more importantly, can be effortlessly incorporated with your taste. “A great light fixture can be the show stopper that elevates your decor and highlights your personal style," Greer adds. The glass pendant is a popular model with many consumers for its simple and unadorned manner. Its beauty surpasses practicality, exuding elegance with a dash of flare. You’ll find pendants with materials ranging from glass, to stainless steel, to copper. Many of the ones being sold in stores are considered to be progressive and energy efficient

Door after!

Waiting for the perfect piece can try one’s patience, but when the right one comes along, you know it was worth the wait.

This door is the perfect example. Janet looked for an entryway door for a long time. Since her door is larger then average, she wasn't having any luck. That is, unless she wanted to do a custom order. That, however, was not in the budget. One day when she was looking through Craigslist, she found what was going to be her new door! Not only was it the right size, but the door was over 100 years old which fit with the period of her home. It also had the original hardware on it. After some paint stripping, sanding, and replacing two of the panels with glass, the door turned out beautiful. Janet’s home is filled with items once discarded but now has new life.

This spice rack came about from an old cupcake holder at a thrift store. She instantly knew she could repurpose it into a spice rack. She spray painted the cupcake rack black, found some cute jars at Hobby Lobby that fit perfectly in the holes, and made some cute tags to hang from the jars with bakers twine. She used her Cricut to cut the spice names out of card stock and also to print out “Spice It Up” on black vinyl to put on the wood sign that she hot glued to the top of the cupcake rack. A really easy project that made something completely new out of something old!

A Sports Fan’s Dream! Written by: Brooke Christen

Bold statement pieces make this room a sport lovers retreat!

I asked Annie how she came up with the design of the room. She said that when they relocated back to Connecticut from California, Pinterest was just taking off. She had started collecting photos of black rooms, houses, everything in black on Pinterest. She said that the idea of black walls sort of anchored the look and feel she was going for in her son’s room. She said that Patrick was not too thrilled at first. It took some getting used to.

Find a variety of similar crates at Michaels stores!

Annie pointed out that kid spaces always have a lot of stuff. Collections, awards and trophies, and books. In her California house, his room had a built in for everything. Annie started collecting crates to create a wall of storage to replace those built-in’s. The crates and the Ikea locker cabinet hold everything her son collects.

“To keep a room from feeling so limited, don’t stick to one color combination.” -Annie Annie likes a room to look collected over time rather than one that looks like it was assembled from a catalog. Patrick’s room, as well as the rest of Annie’s home, is a collection of their favorite things. She found most of the pieces in her son’s room at Ikea. Also many pieces, just like the rest of her home, are from flea markets and thrift stores. Annie is constantly moving things from one room to another. She loves being able to mix things up and find new homes for their “things.” Thank you Annie for sharing this practical and creative kid’s space with us!

tablescapes Inspiring Ideas For Every Tabletop

Romantic Dinner at Home WITH ADWOA OSEI Written by: Oscar Bravo Photos by: Adwoa Osei

- One of my all-time favorite things to do is to gather around a nice set table with family to have a home cooked meal. There doesn't have to be a special occasion for this to happen; there just has to be a want, or need to relax and enjoy the comforts of your home. I actually enjoy eating at home more than going out to a restaurant. For this Valentine's Day, think about planning a nice dinner at home instead of making those reservations at that restaurant. Your dinner doesn't have to be over the top to be appreciated and neither does your tabletop decor. A simple bouquet of your favorite flowers from your local grocery store and some candlelight might be all you need to create a romantic and relaxing ambiance in your home.

“I love all things floral, soft, ethereal and feminine

I reached out to my creative friend, Adwoa Osei and asked if she could take some time away from her busy schedule to have an interview with me about her creativity and for her to share with me some of her gorgeous pictures that I am such a huge fan of. Please visit her Instagram page to see what I'm talking about.

Q: Thank you so much for taking some time from your busy schedule to chat. Tell me a bit about yourself. — A: I am a self-described softie. I tend to gravitate towards simple elegance and vintage items. I am Originally from Ghana. I currently live in Indiana, and have been here for about 6 years. I am busy during the day as a pediatrician. Outside the office, I spend time photographing, writing and baking.

Q: I love that you make time for yourself to be creative. I think that is very important. I really admire your work and the images you share on your Instagram profile of your baking and flower arranging. Do you have any training in those categories? — A: Thank you. I started baking when my oldest child was about 4 years old. We had discovered that he had a severe milk allergy in infancy. After years of struggling to find baked goods that were dairy free, I made my first cake for him at his 4 year birthday party. It was quite a disaster! Over the years, free online videos and recipes have been my go to for lessons and ideas. Sometimes, I do experiment as well. My interest in floral arrangement is quite new and has grown since joining Instagram. I do not have any formal training or schooling. I tend to do a lot of studying of popular florists, paying attention to the choreography of arrangements. Ultimately though, my floral pieces are built based on what I'm feeling or the mood I'm in for that day.

Q: I understand you completely. I also take an "organic" and thoughtful approach to decorating. Your pictures are so beautiful. How did you learn to be such a good photographer? — A: Thank you so much. I have been snapping for as long as I can remember. Often times, I have to take a few hundred shots, just to get the right one. My biggest ally has been my canon DSLR. I once took an online course via Groupon, which showed me how to use my camera. Currently taking some still life classes online. I take pictures mostly to reflect how I feel and what emotion I'm trying to portray. I also utilize VSCO mobile filters for editing. Have always been and still intimidated by Photoshop.

Q: It is always nice to find another creative person that you can relate to and that can help you grow. You are also a poet. I took a peek at your writing on your blog. Where do you get inspiration for your writing? —

Q: I love VSCO filters! Using their filters in a certain way can really bring emotion to a picture. Your pictures and your tablescape definitely have a "look" to them. How would you describe your style? — A: Romantic, feminine, ethereal, vintage, traditional, simple. I think my sweet mentor, Shirley Ann would probably be the best to answer this question. She has been the single most instrumental person in tying all these together for me.

Q:What is a favorite dish of yours that you would love to serve your family on Valentine’s Day?. —A: Pear and arugula salad with candied walnuts and blue cheese crumble with a honey balsamic vinaigrette.

A: Oh wow! That is so kind of you. Mostly based on emotions that I have been carrying around for a while. I enjoy the style of @sylviasimplelife, @nayyirah.waheed, Lady Lee Andrews, Rilke, Mary Oliver, Emily Dickinson and Pablo Neruda to name a few. I would say though, that writing slows me down, to notice the grace and gratitude present all around me.

“Sew in Love” Worn sweaters find new life for Valentines Day!

Written by: Lauren Ashworth The New Year is full of fresh starts and organization and for many of us that means sorting through our closets and purging old items. I usually end up with a pretty big donation pile myself! But I’d be lying if I didn’t admit to occasionally sorting back through my things one last time to see if there was any hidden potential for a trash-to-treasure project. That’s exactly what Yvonne Gerratt did when she discovered the hidden potential in her stash of old sweaters! Her festive project is a darling addition to her Valentine’s Day décor and better yet, it didn’t cost her a dime!

*Vary the position of the stencil on your fabric so the direction is slightly different on each shape!

Steps

*Cut just below the pen outline so none of the ink is visible on the edges.

*Cookie cutters are great to trace different shape patterns!

EVERYTHINGHOMEMAGAZINE.COM | FEB 2016

Instructions Yvonne started out with a few of her favorite tops out of the donation pile and cut the arms off of each sweater, opening them along the seam. She chose a heart shape for her garland and created a pattern using a piece of folded cardboard to ensure that her heart was symmetrical. With the sweater placed right side down, she traced her patterns and cut out several hearts using fabric scissors. Although a sewing machine might have been a faster way to attach her fabric pieces together, Yvonne preferred to hand stitch the hearts instead to add an extra handmade touch to their look. Using a simple stitch approximately ¼” from the edge and leaving a one inch opening for filling, she carefully secured each heart, lightly stuffing them with polyfil and taking care to stuff each corner. Once the remainder of each heart was sewn closed, Yvonne had an entire pile of precious hearts to use all around the house. And, just like that – a pile of old stuff bound for the trash became a fun new addition to her household!

Yvonne chose to pin each heart to some twine to create her garland instead of permanently attaching them so they could be repurposed in other ways, as well. And surprisingly, the entire length of her garland was created using only one sweater sleeve! So this project could certainly yield enough tiny shapes for several uses. The extra hearts are perfect for garnishing gift bags and boxes. Yvonne even cut the waistband of the sweater off to use as an easy decorative pillow cuff. So clever!

“I love making beautiful things that are FREE! Getting creative and seeing how many ways I can upcycle something without spending a penny is one of the most rewarding aspects about repurposing!” –Yvonne Gerratt

ow that the cold has officially set in for most of us, (you southerners are totally making me jealous) it’s more crucial than ever to find activities for your kids. I won’t tell anyone if you are doing this more for your own sanity rather than your kid’s. I get it, I understand, and I am here to help. I have just the woman to introduce you to for your kid craft woes, and you will adore her if you don’t already. This is a craft that you and your children will equally love.

You may know Brittany Hayes from her appearance on Shark Tank, her incredible business and blog Addison’s Wonderland, her and her husband’s love of house flipping, or her newly featured abode in Better Homes and Gardens. Talk about a boss lady trifecta. This girl just can’t be stopped. Not only is she running the design world, she is also one of the sweetest mommas I know. It is a privilege to call this woman my décor idol, and friend. Brittany told me that like most kids, her two beautiful girls LOVE to craft, paint, and make messes. Since their ages are eight and three, she has a hard time finding crafts that they will both enjoy. She said “let’s be honest, it is especially difficult to find one that is feature worthy. I mean, I showcase their artwork in their playroom, and on our back door…but a full vignette? That’s another story.” This made me chuckle because I’m sure we all can totally relate. We want the world to know how proud we are of our babes and their artwork, but sometimes displaying them in an appealing way can be tricky.

Easy & Fun!

Supply List • 12” x 16” Canvas (the size shown, but you could customize your own) • Craft Paint • Foam Brushes • Letter Stickers

Before you begin your craft, Brittany has a few tips she wanted to share from what she learned while doing this project. •

Paper MAY work better than canvas at preventing the paint from bleeding underneath the letters.

Brittany used double sided tape to secure some edges of the letters that started to pop up.

She also used white-out to correct the paint that bled underneath the letters once she removed them. The colors are a perfect match.

4.

Step One: Mark lines in pencil for desired letter placement.

Step Two: Stick letters onto the canvas and press down firmly on every side.

Step Three: Paint! This is the very best part of the project. Perfection is not necessary; just let them go at it!

Step Four: Remove the letters! The Pinterest fail truth!

I cannot get over how adorable this kid craft is, and how it truly looks like a piece of art you could find at your local store. Perfect for your kids, perfect for you, and everyone has a fun time. Now, what’s not to love?
