ready, set, diy Creative Ideas for your Next DIY Project Let's see how she did it! If you decide to take on this awesome project, be sure to share it with all of us here at Everything Home! The shelf turns out to be 8ft 8in wide and about 7ft 6in tall, with a depth of about 11.25in. However, one of the things that I love about DIY projects is that they are totally customizable! The size of the shelves and piping can be changed to fit perfectly into your own space.
Industrial Meets Farmhouse! As soon as I saw Heather's DIY shelving system on Instagram I went on a scrolling frenzy to find more photos! I love the industrial look of the piping along with the natural wood pieces. The neutral color palette of the system offers endless styling options! Let’s get started! WashAthe pipes and fittings in hot soapy water because they are typically greasy. Note from the Editors Spray paint the pipes and fittings
Sand the pine boards to smooth out any rough spots. Paint the pine boards Place all pieces out on the floor and position them in your desired layout. Create the vertical poles by connecting the longer pipes into the top and bottom of a 3-way tee. Create the horizontal poles to hold the wood board by connecting the shorter pipes into the side opening of the 3-way tee. The 90 degree elbows will be on the back end of the unit to support the wood boards and at the top of the unit where the poles attach to the wall. The flanges will be used to secure the bottom of the unit to the floor and the top of the unit to the wall. As you start putting it together, use your 3/4″ round drill bit to make your holes in the shelves so they can slide onto the pipes. Attach the unit to the wall starting with the center pole. Be sure that this pole is secured into a wall stud.

Style your shelves! I typically shop my own home for items that I love and want to display. Stacking books horizontally and vertically can create different levels. Adding art pieces will bring in pops of color and add personality to your shelves. Layering pieces will make the shelf appear deeper and bigger. Lastly, mix it up! Photography has been a passion of mine for several years now, but even before I fell in love with having a camera in my hands, I fell in love with editing. Editing, or more commonly referred to by photographers as post processing, can be a simple and enjoyable experience if you just have the right tools. Anyone, from professional photographers to everyday hobbyists, can benefit from knowing more about post processing and finding the right software that fits their needs. In my opinion Adobe Lightroom is an essential tool for professional photographers, bloggers, and hobbyists alike. If photography is new to you, you may be wondering what Lightroom is. Adobe Lightroom is essentially the “digital dark room�. It allows you to enhance, organize, and store your photos while preserving the original image. Adobe refers to this post processing software as non-destructive which means you can easily experiment with editing your images but your original remains intact. There are endless features in the software that benefit all photography lovers. Here are just a few of the many reasons why I believe you will love this software:

Family describes this room best because memories reside here through the pieces that decorate it, the laughter that fills it, and the individuals who spend their time in it. You enter this room and immediately notice the shiplap walls. It is a feature that grabs your attention with the fine details of wood planks and white walls. Next, your eye is drawn to the special pieces of furniture that have found their home here. Spring: Neutral Style Grandmother’s well-loved books are displayed in a basket complimenting the industrial glam “feel” of this well designed room. There is an aged buffet adorned with bronzed lamps creating that rustic charm we all have grown to love. I've always loved art since I was a little girl, but it wasn't until my third child started kindergarten that God began to open the opportunity. My inspiration is found in the beauty around me. What was your main inspiration to start a small business? After my brother Alex died unexpectedly in 2000, I was a little “lost” to say the least. He was my best friend, we did everything together. I took a little time to concentrate on a way to honor his memory and June 1989 was born. He was born in June of 1989, so the name seemed perfect. Our family symbol for Alex is the dragonfly, so I decided to make handmade bracelets in memory of him. This gorgeous space is their absolute favorite room in their home. The features their family loves the most are the high ceilings, the large windows that let in a ton of natural light, the fireplace, which is the rooms focal point, and finally, the open feeling this room brings. The living room is adjacent to the kitchen, which allows everyone to feel included in conversations and family activities. Jennifer loves the volume this space adds to her home, yet feels very cozy at the same time.

Attention to detail makes this pre-teens room fit for a princess!
W
hen faced with the task of making over her daughter's bedroom, Randi of Randi Garrett Design wanted to create a space that could be updated as her pre-teen daughter transitions from middle school likes and interests to high school and beyond. Essentially it needed to be a space that she could grow with over the next several years. A little background: one of 5 children, Randi's daughter is the only girl. Yikes! Not only was this makeover completely necessary, but much needed for the sole female of the group so she could escape the plethora of "boy stuff." The star of this makeover is the cream colored velvet tufted headboard which is the anchor for the bedroom. Randi searched high and low in stores and could not quite EVERYTHINGHOMEMAGAZINE.COM | MAY 2016
come up with the solution she had envisioned. Either the shape was right or the color was wrong or vice versa. So, she ended up calling on her local upholsterer, conveying exactly what she wanted. It is obvious that this was the right choice. Just look at this headboard! It is perfectly scaled for the room and offers a foundation to work from as the remaining pieces come together. What a great reminder that if you cannot seem to find what you are looking for through retail outlets, let your creativity shine and call on a specialist. In this instance, the item delivered was spot on and within budget.
Now, no bedroom makeover is complete without new bedding. Here, Randi invested in a neutral color palette featuring whites and a little pop of color with the polka dot sheet set. As she points out, items that you expect to hang on to for an extended period of time, such as duvets, sheet sets, and head pillows, will pay you back tenfold with their quality and durability. Accent items and pieces you expect to change out more frequently need not carry that higher price tag.
There are two different paths to making over a space within your home. You can take it on all at once or you can pick up pieces over time which seems to add a bit of personality to the space. In this instance, Randi spent six months locating and purchasing the right items for her daughter's bedroom. This route allows you to save for those specific higher cost pieces so as not to break the bank all in one swift motion. One of the more unheralded components of this look is the Ralph Lauren Edwardian Linen paint which adorns the walls. It is such a soft color and offers a feminine sophistication that her daughter will appreciate for many years to come.
Have fun with fabrics that can be easily changed out over time, like this chair!
Finally, the details of the space begin to take shape. The knobs on the dresser are changed out to
overly cute bow pulls. I just love them. Additionally, she found the frames long before she found the artwork which would fill them. What a great tip to remember. When you find the right item, grab it as she did here. The artwork was found at a later date and works perfectly. Speaking of working perfectly, the neutrals and light pinks in this room call for an eye popping piece. Allow me to introduce to you the velvet leopard fabric reupholstered chair. Shown with a balancing throw pillow, the two pieces work seamlessly together and create just the right amount of intrigue and contrast within this adorable bedroom.
This project came together over time and I would imagine the vision slightly changed throughout the process as the items were collected. In essence, when you are making over a space, enjoy the journey as it may take you to a slightly different destination than you had originally planned. Randi flat out knocked it out of the park with this bedroom makeover. It is perfection!

Floral arranging can be quite daunting and a little scary. It really isn't. It actually turns out to be a beautiful thing. When buying flowers, I've found the most beautiful flowers have been found at my local Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. If you have a business, look for a local wholesale floral company where you will have access to many more varieties than those sold in the stores. I get flowers from both sources. When I am doing an arrangement, I don't always know what I'm looking for unless it's for a client/event. Otherwise, if you are just making an arrangement for your home or for a table centerpiece, pick what's in season and what goes well together. This arrangement doesn't take a lot to put together.
24 dozen white roses 5 white peonies 10 stems of pink ranunculus Written by: Kelly Fellin 8 stems of another variety of bold pink flowers A bunch of silver dollar eucalyptus BEFORE STARTING remove any leaves and stems from your roses. In a mid size glass vase, fill your vase with water. Ensure that when you are putting in your flowers, you don't allow any greenery/leaves to be UNDER water. This will cause your flowers to die quicker.
Cut your white roses down about 6-8 inches, enough to allow them to lay nicely in the vase. Next add the peonies, then the ranunculus, then your pink flowers. of the WrittenMost by: Kelly Fellin time I end by adding in the greenery to fill empty space and to bring the arrangement all together. Sometimes, it's OK to use more than one variety of greenery. There are no rules. This arrangement should last up to a week and a half.

“Sleep with a slice of wedding cake under your pillow, and you will dream of your husband to be…” Springtime is here, and love is in the air, for it is the start of wedding season! There is always a buzz of excitement this time of year, as brides and grooms to be put the final touches on all of the planning that has been going on for the last few months. There are dresses to be tried on for the final fitting, meals to be planned, songs to be chosen, and seating arrangements to figure out, but there is one part of the wedding that cannot be overlooked… The wedding cake. Wedding cakes have been a very important part of the wedding reception since medieval times.
Sitting in their place of honor, they served as not only a sweet delicacy for the guests, but also for traditional acts of symbolism to solidify a married life filled with happiness, children, and prosperity. The bride and groom cutting the cake together, symbolized their first act together as husband and wife. In Victorian times, powdered sugar was very expensive, so the whiter the cake, it became a symbol of wealth in the family. The wedding cake has changed throughout the years, starting with a stack of rolls in medieval times, to fruitcakes, to the traditional white cake with white frosting that we all know today. They’ve also become more simplified, going from little plastic stairs that held little plastic bridesmaids and groomsmen circling down the sides of the cake, to ribbons and fountains, and massive amounts of colorful frosting flowers…to a simpler, more romantic, and elegant kind of cake today.
A rustic sophistication. Simply frosted, and adorned with fresh flowers, a three or four tiered wedding cake makes a beautiful contribution to the wedding reception.
And because of its newfound simplicity, the wedding cake couldn’t be easier, and surprisingly inexpensive to make yourself! Here is a super fun, super easy, and super delicious wedding cake that you can throw together a couple of days before the wedding! You’ll be surprised at just how easily this cake can be put together! The fluffy frosting is flavored with a butter flavoring, and complements the vanilla in the cake so deliciously! This particular cake was baked in about 8 hours the first day, and about 2 hours of frosting and decorating the second day. A little on the denser side, this cake remains super moist for the third day (wedding day), as long as you coat it with a thin layer of frosting while it is still just a little warm. It can be baked and frozen a couple of weeks in advance, by wrapping it up in several layers of plastic wrap, and a final wrap in aluminum foil.

This cake will serve about 144 people: The bottom layer is a 14 inch single layer cake. It will serve 40 - two inch by two inch slices. The second layer is a 12 inch double layer cake. It will serve 56 two inch by two inch slices. The third layer is a 10 inch single layer cake. It will serve 20 - two inch by two inch slices. The top layer is an 8 inch double layer cake. It will serve 28 - two inch by two inch slices. The cost? Around $75 total for the ingredients, flowers, cardboard rounds and dowels!

…And getting back to the idea of sleeping with a slice of wedding cake…I heard that myth so many times as I was growing up, and to be very honest, I’ve never slept with a slice of wedding cake, nor have I have I ever heard of anyone who has. If someone is going to hand me a slice of cake, I can promise you, I’m not going to sleep with it, most likely there will be a fork involved, possibly a napkin, and the hopes of getting an end piece with lots of frosting!

have always believed there is an art to decorating with found or second hand items. Blending the old with the new can be tricky for some but Colleen has brought the two worlds together and the results are incredible! When choosing items for her Nashville home, Colleen wanted it to feel very collected with more of a sophisticated edge. This is her specialty in design. She has the ability to incorporate vintage with modern pieces and leave you feeling as if they were made for each other.
"I am ALWAYS about the mix." Colleen and her husband have recently become "empty nesters" so she decided to indulge a bit more with their dĂŠcor than she normally would. Working with a local lumber yard, she designed this massive table and had it built from reclaimed wood. The mid century Eiffel chairs and Art Deco light fixture were brought in to complete the blending of the styles.

Group like vintage finds together for a stunning display, like these candlesticks. Both houses are filled with one of a kind finds like this table base. She was drawn to it because of its uniqueness and glamour, which was a change for her! From there she gathered pieces that she said had been around for a very long time. The Panton mirror and antlers are two of her favorites. The console was a bit more masculine and was added to give the room balance.

Colleen has a pretty organic approach to her designs. She normally begins with white walls and wood floors then begins adding pieces that resonate with her. In her lake house office, the combination of the beaded chandelier, vibrant wallpaper and vintage rug all help create a space that inspires her daily!

In the family room Colleen chose a fun pillow collection for the space. "Whimsy is so important in making a house personal and interesting!" The bright, white built ins showcase some of her found treasures.

Colleen is a self proclaimed "rule breaker" and loves the contrast of styles in her breakfast nook. She added the vintage settee as a backdrop piece for the modern design of the table and Bertoia chairs. "Finding one of a kind lighting is challenging but I'm always up for that challenge!" Colleen loves what lighting can do for any room. She feels the vintage Sciolari light is the best part of her kitchen. Her brass and Lucite shelves were revived and added to the space along with the large brass mirror. "I truly believe the little things make the biggest impact. I feel that many kitchens are beautiful but eventually all begin to look the same." By adding smaller vintage piece she has created a space that is a bit more unique. The dining room at Colleen's lake house was my first glimpse into her beautifully decorated world. It was love at first sight for me! The new light fixtures make a bold statement above that perfectly aged table. Her touch of vintage is also displayed on the rustic mantle across the room. The bowling pins are a recent find that Colleen refers to as lifers....meaning they aren't going anywhere.

here is nothing I love more than a beautiful remodel completed on a budget, and this kitchen from Benina, @balkanina, is the perfect example of how to do it right! Benina and her fiancĂŠ Tom wanted an updated kitchen without the high costs that are usually associated with it, to save for their upcoming wedding. They decided to go with a complete DIY remodel, including painting the cabinets white, installing subway tile, and choosing laminate countertops. When I asked what her inspiration was for this beautiful space she said, “My main inspiration was the idea of a clean, fresh but 'lived in' look. I wouldn't say I necessarily chose a design style for my kitchen, or my home for that matter...I used different styles and sort of meshed them together. For example, I love the farmhouse kitchen look with the subway tile, open shelving, and pops of black hardware, but I also love the clean traditional look of marble counter tops, clean and cohesive appliances, and a dining table that is timeless.â€? Add rustic, open shelving to a space to add instant farmhouse appeal!

One of my favorite features is this salvaged wood panel Benina put above the window. She said she didn’t want to lose any of the natural light by adding a curtain. It breaks up the soft colors and adds beautiful warmth and texture. Her husband added the crown molding above the cabinets which really gives them an updated look. Of course, with any remodel there is always struggles along the way, for them it was the existing backsplash, which they had to cut certain pieces out of the drywall and replace the wall. Luckily Tom is very handy at DIY! The wine rack under the cabinet was a DIY built by Tom using Shanty 2 Chic plans. EVERYTHINGHOMEMAGAZINE.COM | MAY 2016
Benina says Home Depot was the main source for their remodel, the tile came from The Tile Shop, and she accessorized by shopping at Home Goods, Marshalls, and TJ Maxx. Their dining table was a flip they scored for $20! Simply beautiful. With a lot of DIY and hard work, their outdated kitchen and dining room now looks fresh, new, and welcoming.

Making the most out of a small space!

ami needed this shared bedroom to look as big as possible for a small space. Her solution was to paint the walls white and to add wood detailing to make them more interesting. It is very important to Cami that all of the rooms in their home flow nicely together. She tries to start every room with plenty of white on the walls. Then the subtle color is brought in with the furnishings. Doing this has helped Cami feel the rooms flow from space to space, yet have their own personality and needed function inside.

Her husband is very handy and made the two beds to fit along one wall and the custom fit desk with some options for toy storage. I loved that she finished the room by filling it with thrift store finds and re-purposed items.

Cami painted the door to their room in pink, she said if she had left it up to her kids they would have painted the entire room pink with rainbows and butterflies everywhere. It looks to me like they had a great compromise.

Cami created a place to store their treasures and things they collect. Cami said that the treasure drawer can get full really quickly, and that is when they go through the drawer and determine what is really worth keeping, it is a great lesson that kids need to learn. They also have a roll around cart where they store their collections and toys. Cami said that this is absolutely all the toys allowed in their room. She shared a great tip; they keep other toys locked in a closet in their basement and they rotate them regularly so they get to re-love their toys. Most of the images that gave Cami inspiration were mostly very white, clean, and simple Nordic children’s rooms. She does strive to teach her kids that less is more, and she wanted their rooms to feel open, clean, and uncluttered.

on't you just get so excited when you turn someone’s trash into your treasure? It's so fun to take something old and use it in a different way. It makes my little heart so happy to see pieces that would rust or rot away being restored in fun ways and being used again. That's what this column is all about! Those Up-Cycled items that are getting a new life! When I first stumbled upon Lara from @JunqueCottage on Instagram, I knew we'd be friends. Not only was her home and eye for rustic design as Written by: Laurie Scardina gorgeous as she was, she was funny, witty, and talented! I fell in love with her feed and found myself 30 minutes later coming back to reality after scrolling through her gorgeous pictures and amazing uses and ideas for items that I never would have thought to use in my home dÊcor.

One of my favorite things in Lara's home was this Chicken Feeder she upcycled and found for her dining room. I think it makes such a statement and I mean, who would have thought to use something like this as a focal point in a room? It screams country, rustic, vintage, found farmhouse, and all of those other things.

When I asked Lara if she decorates spaces around pieces or pieces around spaces, her response was a good one; "I tend to buy items that speak to me� Lara told me, "I don't always have a plan on where I'll use it, I bring it home, and if it doesn't fit I will sell the item and keep treasure hunting." I think when up-cycling items it's really great to have a general idea of what you can do with something, but it's also nice to buy things and then make spaces for those things later. That's how the greatest rooms are put together in my opinion. Having a house full of things we truly love is what makes our homes different and unique.
Many of us love the idea of up-cycling, but don't know where to look or where to start searching for the perfect items! A great place to start, Lara says, is at local antique shops, or garage and estate sales. I have to agree, I've found some of the best things at my local estate sales and auctions! Also, don't be scared to get out there and search Craigslist or local Facebook sites for some goodies. I picked Lara's brain for a little while longer and asked her if there were any An old chicken specific items she looks for when feeder makes unique storage shopping her favorite places, and she for white plates! responded by telling me she loves "anything chippy, rustic and unique. Just about anything metal I can use." I know so many of you can relate. I get an instant smile just talking about anything chippy, rustic, and unique. There is something that just makes our homes so unique and different when we incorporate re-purposed items we love.

O: OK, this place looks like party central! So many fun colors! Where did you get your inspiration from when you created this outdoor tablescape? T&J: We are inspired by the warm weather that spring brings. We are ready to move entertaining outside. This fabulous turquoise bar is the main feature and starting point for our decorating. When we saw the colorful stoneware fish plates on a Target shopping spree we knew we had to have them for our tablescape!

O: That bar is so cool! I can totally see myself in a hawaiian-print shirt preparing some margaritas. Where did you find it? T&J: The bar was handmade by Tamara's father-in-law, Al. It's the perfect backdrop and gathering spot for our get-togethers. O: I agree! What kind of yummy drinks would you serve out here? T&J: We love a help yourself bar. A giant galvanized bucket of iced down beer and choice of white and red sangria in drink dispensers help get the party started while we are finishing up the food on the BBQ.
O: OK, you’re making me thirsty! What about the music? What kind of music would you be playing for your guests? T&J: We choose music according to the time of day, guest and food. For this party, we would choose music that soothes the soul. Ray LaMontagne, Alabama Shakes, The Head and the Heart, Empire of the Sun and Grouplove are definitely on our playlist for dinner parties. O: I Love all the bright colors you added with your bowls and how nicely they bring out the navy on your gorgeous plates. T&J: Thank you! The plates we picked up recently at Pottery Barn. We loved the contrast of the bright white and the navy trim making it a clean and fresh look. The bowls are from Anthropologie. We like the play on color making the tablescape modern and stylish. O: Modern, stylish and FUN! So, give us some tips. What are some good rules to follow when hosting an outdoor dinner party? T&J: Planning! Good planning helps alleviate pre-party nerves. Also, always have more food and drinks than needed (so there's no embarrassing moment when someone brings a friend). We like to be sitting down 15 mins before the party starts. It's a perfect time for a pre- party cocktail. O: What is your favorite part of your beautiful tablescape? T&J: We love the vibe it creates for our guest. They can anticipate a little beachy, a little funky and a lot of party!

crafty kids Simple And Creative Crafts For The Littles

he month of May is fabulous for many T reasons, one of my personal favorite being Mother’s Day. I may be biased, and I may be a mother, but I love this day for simply more than the day being all about me. Though that’s not always a bad thing, am I right? My kids and my sweet hubby are always very thoughtful gift givers, but tell me I am not alone when I say, if there is something I want, I screenshot an image of it, and send it to my significant other. A little nudge never hurts.
This year, like every year, I wanted something to remind me of my little ones still being little. I wanted something to capture them being their adorable and innocent selves. I have pictures of them framed, in books, in collages, and don’t get me wrong, I adore anything with their faces on them, but I was just looking for something different. I stumbled upon a few DIY profile projects, and I knew that is what I wanted to do!
There are many ways you can get creative with this Kid Craft, but here is how my kiddos and I made ours.
You will need: a slice of wood per child (or canvas, cardstock, whatever you prefer your base to be) a profile photograph per child (I used regular computer paper, in black and white) your choice of paints/paintbrush scissors fine-tipped black marker hardware for the backside if you are planning to hang it
Instructions 1. Take a profile photo of your child, and print it off.
2. Paint the slice of wood. My boys chose blue, and my daughter chose pink. I kept the colors on the lighter side, because I wanted it to feel soft. We didn’t quite take it all the way to the end, but my kids painted their own, so it was up to them. I kind of love that they don’t look perfect. We chose white for the polka dots. 3. While the paint is drying, cut out the photos of your child’s profile. I outlined them with a fine sharpie before cutting them out. That helped me a lot in terms of being able to capture the cute little details of their hair, and face.
4. Once the tree slice is dry, take the cut out photo, and trace it with the fine sharpie, so you have an outline of your child’s face.
5. You can choose to leave it this way, or as we did, paint it black. I think either way is so cute!
6. Once it is completely dry, you may place the hardware on the back if you are planning on hanging it up.

Something cute, and meaningful, and easy enough you can delegate this to your husband, and he and the kiddos can have an afternoon of it.
