Preserving the Past

D

uring the Gilded Age, America’s wealthiest families flocked to Newport, Rhode Island, the City by the Sea and its surrounding areas, making the area their summertime playground. The meticulous preservation of more than a dozen of these mansions gives us intimate access to the artistry, personality, and complex culture that went into these colossal time capsules. All that being said, simply having access to and enjoying the breathtaking grounds and cliffside vantage points of these homes is a treasure we cherish. Here we highlight one of those magnificent mansions, The Breakers. The Breakers is the grandest of Newport’s summer “cottages” and a symbol of the Vanderbilt family’s social and financial preeminence in turn of the century America. Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794-1877) established the family fortune in steamships and later in the New York Central Railroad, which was a pivotal development in the industrial growth of the nation during the late 19th century. The Commodore’s grandson, Cornelius

Vanderbilt II, became Chairman and President of the New York Central Railroad system in 1885 and purchased a wooden house called The Breakers in Newport during that same year. In 1893, he commissioned architect Richard Morris Hunt to design a villa to replace the earlier wood-framed house, which was destroyed by fire the previous year. Hunt directed an international team of craftsmen and artisans to create a 70-room Italian Renaissance-style palazzo inspired by the 16th century palaces of Genoa and Turin. Allard and Sons of Paris assisted Hunt with furnishings and fixtures, Austro-American sculptor Karl Bitter designed relief sculpture, and Boston architect Ogden Codman decorated the family quarters. The Vanderbilts had seven children. Their youngest daughter, Gladys, who married Count Laszlo Szechenyi of Hungary, inherited the house on her mother’s death in 1934. An ardent supporter of The Preservation Society of Newport County, she opened The Breakers in 1948 to raise funds for the Society. In 1972, the Preservation Society purchased the house from her heirs. Today the house is designated a National Historic Landmark.

The Breakers Stable & Carriage House The Breakers Stable & Carriage House is located approximately a half-mile west of the house on Coggeshall Avenue. Completed in 1895, it is 100 feet deep and 150 feet wide, U-shaped with a carriage house in the center. The stable functioned as follows. There were two ways carriages were requested: Mrs. Vanderbilt sent a day-book down every morning at 8 am with a list of the carriages that would be used that day, and people in the house could call down their requests on the telephone. When a carriage was requested, the horses were brought out, hitched, and left the building from the north door. All of the returning carriages entered through the south door. The carriages were unhitched, washed off, and wheeled into the carriage house.

The horses were taken to the back, un-harnessed, and washed down in two rooms with cement floors. The harness was cleaned and placed in the tack room. The horses went to the stable, which consisted of 26 tie stalls and two box stalls. The carriage house and stable were run by the head coachman. There were 12 grooms and stable boys working under his supervision, and they lived directly overhead on the north side. There was a large hayloft and grain room over the stable itself, and the head coachman had a five-room apartment. To the rear, on the south side, there was a large kitchen, dining room, and living room for the grooms and stable boys. Unfortunately, the second floor was destroyed by fire in 1970. Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, who was a leader in the sport of coaching, had Brewster Company of New York, the finest of the coach companies, build him the Venture. He took the Venture, his coachman, grooms, and stable boys along with 12 teams to England each year, where he had a stage coach line that ran from Brighton to London. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday they came up to continued on page 2A ...

London from Brighton; every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday they went back down to Brighton. The run was about 50 miles, and they stopped every 10 miles to change teams. They also stopped for lunch and for tea. The entire run took from 10 am to 5 pm to complete. The Venture is among the coaches now on display in the carriage room. In 1915, Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt was on the steamship Lusitania when it was sunk off the coast of Ireland at the start of World War I. As the ship went down, he gave his life jacket to a woman who could not swim, and as a result, he lost his life. Also on display in the Stable is an exhibit on the New York Central Railroad.

ho wants to pay the full retail price when shopping, especially for furniture? Most items sold at retail stores today inherently include significant markups, and furniture and room décor are no exceptions. That’s why we launched Premiere Consignment. Premiere Consignment offers both buyers and sellers the perfect venue for conveniently buying and selling quality, name brand, gently used furniture, décor, Oriental and area rugs, and art at prices far below their original retail selling prices. The sellers win because they can conveniently sell no longer used quality items resulting from a relocation, downsizing, or estate sale. Safety is another important consideration, because sellers don’t have to invite strangers into their home or sit and wait for buyers who never show up or who want to negotiate an already agreed upon price for an item. Buyers all have full access to our full-service eBay store as well. Buyers especially appreciate our large selection, as well as our convenient showroom location and business hours. And because we accept most forms of payment, there is no need for sellers to be concerned about bad checks or handling large amounts of cash. Homeowners, here’s a great suggestion for the upcoming holidays. Think back to how conveniently guests were able to enjoy your home last holiday season. Did a particular room appear cluttered, or was the traffic pattern or flow obstructed? Was there sufficient seating for all of

your guests? Was your dining room table too large or too small? Would a buffet or sideboard have been helpful when serving meals? Reflecting on last year’s holiday events provides you with the perfect opportunity on just how to improve your home for the upcoming holiday season, allowing you to comfortably and efficiently entertain friends, family, and neighbors this Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s. Here’s how Premiere Consignment can help. From décor to furniture, we can help you enhance every room in your home or help you find a new home for those quality items that you may no longer need. Why not let Premiere Consignment take the inconvenience out of buying and selling quality, name brand furniture, décor, Oriental rugs, and art while saving you up to 90% off full retail pricing? Premiere Consignment is simply your smartest and easiest way to buy and sell! Premiere Consignment 320 Lakeside Plaza Loudon, TN 37774 865-458-9721 www.premiereconsignment.com

From the Publisher

ovember is the month when we take time to give thanks for all of our blessings, and we celebrate Thanksgiving Day to reflect on those blessings with family and friends. I remember back to my childhood Thanksgiving Day celebrations when spending time with family meant everything to me. We all helped with the food preparation, and the turkey was the focal point of that dinner. Special recipes were prepared to enhance the dinner, and my grandmother was always delighting us with a new dessert. I can almost smell those wonderful aromas coming from the kitchen and see the elegantly set table. These memories of family being together are the blessings I will always treasure as many of my family are no longer a part of those gatherings. But we celebrate with them in our thoughts and remember the precious times we had together. As I get older, I truly appreciate anytime my family had those special occasions when we all were together, and I have learned not to take those times for granted. What are you grateful for this Thanksgiving? Is it your family and friends or maybe the opportunities you have available to you living in this country? Or is it your health and well-being? Or maybe you have overcome some significant obstacles that life placed in your path? We all have blessings in our life, and this Thanksgiving take time to reflect on them and be truly grateful. We at East Tennessee’s Mountain Views are grateful to you, our readers and advertisers, for helping to make our publication the best it can be. From our house to yours, Happy Thanksgiving!

Shop Small Saturday

I

n 2010, the United States was in the middle of a recession. Locally owned small businesses, the backbones of all communities, were suffering. In an effort to lend support to small businesses, American Express introduced Shop Small Saturday, an annual campaign held the last Saturday of November. Its purpose is to encourage holiday shoppers to support the locally owned small businesses in their communities. Fast-forward eight years and Shop Small Saturday continues and is now a movement celebrated in all 50 states and was spear-headed by more than 7,200 “Neighborhood Champions” in 2017. The Athens Area Chamber of Commerce, Main Street Athens, and the Athens Downtown Business Association are partnering as “2018 Neighborhood Champions” in the Athens area for this year’s Shop Small Saturday on November 24th. As an incentive for choosing to “shop small” that Saturday, shoppers will have the opportunity to win a shopping spree at participating Athens area small businesses. To enter, all shoppers have to do is take selfies while shopping in Athens area small businesses and post those selfies, including the names of the businesses they are shopping in, to the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce’s Facebook page by 7 pm on November 24th. A winner will be randomly selected from all the Shop Small Saturday selfie posts. There is no limit to the number of selfie entries each person may submit. Obviously, the more “shop small” selfies entered means an increased chance of winning the shopping spree! Shoppers are encouraged to consider foregoing (or at

least decreasing a bit) their Black Friday shopping in order to support Shop Small Saturday. Here are six excellent reasons to do so according to www.co-opcreditunions. org: 1. Shopping small helps create jobs in the community. According to the Small Business Administration, the 28 million small businesses in America account for 54% of all sales in the United States. Small businesses also provide around 55% of all jobs and 66% of all new jobs. Shopping at local small businesses helps to stimulate local economies. 2. Shopping small means tax dollars will stay local. Shopping at small businesses helps keep tax

dollars at work in the community. The research firm Civic Economics found that 48% of purchases at locally owned small businesses go right back into the community, compared to less than 14% of sales at big box chain stores. Shopping small means shoppers’ tax dollars are put to work supporting local schools and other public services. 3. Small businesses are more likely to give back to their community. Owners of local small businesses are more likely to form partnerships and relationships with organizations in their community. 4. Shopping with one local small business helps to strengthen all local businesses. As shoppers discover and shop with one local business, they will invariably investigate neighboring small businesses. 5. Locally owned small businesses carry unique merchandise. Mass produced merchandise can be found in big box chain stores. Small businesses offer locally and/or regionally made products unique to the area – perfect gifts for friends, family, teachers, and co-workers. 6. Shopping with local small businesses helps communities remain unique. Participating in Shop Small Saturday ensures independent businesses are successful and helps them continue to add life and vibrancy to the communities where they are located. These unique small businesses would have a hard time keeping their doors open without shoppers’ patronage and support.

American Legion Post 256 Visited by Lt. General Ulysses S. Grant

6A • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, November 2018

I

n his second appearance in front of American Legion Post 256 members, Dr. Curt Fields began his introduction by explaining he was going to provide an insight into “the young” Ulysses Grant. Grant may have grown up like most young boys during this time period, but a few things did stand out, such as his love for horses and his natural ability to ride, as he was an expert horseman. In school, he was always an average student but with an above average understanding of arithmetic. A surprising note about the young Grant was that he never aspired to go into the military, let alone pursue a military career. But through circumstances and connections, young Grant entered into West Point. Though not aspiring to climb the military career ladder, Grant did posses special leadership qualities and an uncanny ability to be in the mist of many battles within the Mexican War and the Civil War and never be shot or injured. We know Ulysses S. Grant as the 18th President of the United States and at one time commander of the Federal Armies for President Lincoln, but a notable mention in his history is he had once been made commander of West Tennessee armies. Dr. Curt Fields, a truly professional historian and an inspiring re-enactor, is so believable with his presentations that you feel you are there in the 1800s with General Grant himself. Breakfast for Buds a Resounding Success

T

he Tellico Village Veterans of Foreign Wars post hosted the first Breakfast for Buds on October 13th at Mama’s Grits/Classico Restaurant in Tellico Village. We had 27 veterans attend to reminisce and enjoy each other’s company. Many discovered that even though they were in separate units, they were stationed in the same places. A memorabilia table was set up for everyone to share with each other. One person brought a before and after picture of when he was in Vietnam and when he went back for a visit years later. Another brought a WWII locker that his father had with pictures and newspaper articles about local Iowa soldiers wounded, captured, or killed plus letters to home. A third person brought memorabilia from WWI to the present, which was just a thimble drop of his collection. He has one room in his

house he calls his museum. The next Breakfast for Buds event will be held on Saturday, November 10, from 8:30 to 10 am. This monthly veterans’ breakfast is always held on the second Saturday. The informal gathering has no agenda, announcements, or speeches, but rather is intended to give veterans and active military personnel an opportunity to meet, have a meal, and share their military experiences. Veterans are also encouraged to bring photos and other military memorabilia for display on nearby tables. “I enjoyed the breakfast, meeting other vets, and being able to display some of my military memorabilia,” said Tellico Village resident Jim Rogers, a U.S. Air Force officer who served in missile silo. TV Lions Install New Collection Station

n order to facilitate the process of collecting used eyeglasses, pill containers, and used hearing aids and make it more convenient for donors, the TV Lions have purchased and installed a new collection facility for these items. The new collection station is located at the rear of the Welcome Center in what were formerly the drive-thru lanes for the bank. The station can be accessed by going around the right side of the center (as you face it). You then simply pull up to the station and drop your items into the large post office style box. The items can be dropped into the container without leaving your vehicle. As indicated above, three items can be placed in the container. They are used eyeglasses that are collected and sent to a Lions Recycling Center in Roanoke, VA, where they are refurbished, as necessary,

acceptable type container is as pictured. It is critical that the labels be removed from them. This can best be done by soaking the container in water for a couple of hours; the labels come off quite easily after the soaking. An alternative is to purchase Goo-Gone, which is designed specifically for removing labels and the residual glue on items such as these containers. The collected containers are taken by the Lions to an NGO located in Columbus, OH, from where they are shipped, again, primarily to third world countries. They are used by physicians and drug dispensers in these countries to eliminate loss and damage to pills that occurs when the patients simply carry their medications in their hands or pockets. The third item that can be placed in the container are used hearing aids. They are sent to the Hearing and Speech Foundation in Maryville, where they are refurbished and given to indigent residents of Loudon County. How successful has the collection effort been in the past? In the last Lions business year, 1,598 pairs of used eyeglasses were sent to Roanoke, 5,640 pill containers to Columbus, and about 40 pairs of used hearing aids to Maryville. Hopefully, with the convenience of the new collection station, these figures will increase during the course of the current business year. The success of this program, as with all other TV Lions service efforts, is only possible with the support of TV residents. An example of this support is the recently completed Oktoberfest. More than 600 residents attended, making it both a social as well as financial success. Why is something like this important? The profits from this event, estimated at about $4,000, enable financial support to a number of service efforts. For example, in a recent month, the Lions Health Fair vision tested 32 individuals at the Good Samaritan Center in Lenoir City. Of those, 25 needed glasses; all 25 were eligible for free glasses, which were provided to them. The cost to the Lions Club in that one month alone was $3,200. If another recent donation, $2,000 to the TV Library is added, more than the entire profit from the Oktoberfest was used in just one month. It is for reasons such as this that community support to Lions fundraisers is so critical. Again, the Lions thank you for your support and hope it continues well into the future.

Going Long

M

any of us at one time or another have toyed with the idea of growing our hair out longer than it currently is. Having done this myself a number of times, in addition to guiding countless guests through this process, allows me to offer some sage advice on how to best accomplish your goals.

First, keep in mind that this process takes time, and there is no instant gratification involved. After determining your desired length and style, the best thing someone trying to grow their hair can do is stay away from scissors. If you are dealing with chemically treated hair, there may be some need to do routine maintenance on the ends

if they become broken or split. However, if the hair is healthy and in reasonably good shape, it is always best to keep the scissors out of it unless abBrian K. Whitehead solutely necessary. There Managing Partner have been myths and The Village Salon wives’ tales that regularly trimming your hair will The Village Salon make it grow faster. This is 222 Village Square simply not true. Human hair in Tellico Village grows from the roots and not 865-458-9332 from the ends. thevillagesalon@aol.com Once the desired length has been achieved, now the real work (and fun) begins for your stylist. By this time in the process, both the guest and the stylist have gathered enough information on what the hair might possibly be capable of, and the decision making for choosing a particular style will have been made much easier during the growing period. Going long is a fun project at any age, because as many stylists love to say, “Your hair don’t know how old you are.” If you ever consider this for yourself, simply discuss it with your salon professional and develop a plan for successfully going long.

Guests also enjoyed hearing from Heather Bishop and Kelli Williams, prospective homeowners who became good friends while working on their Habitat homes. Tired of Wire? Replace Inefficient Wire Shelving with a Custom Design

10A • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, November 2018

W

hether you live in a small condo or multilevel home, a new house or an old one, many homeowners face a common problem: A wire closet system. Wire is inexpensive, but in the end, is cheaper always better? While wire shelving is certainly adequate and easy to install yourself, the non-adjustable hanging and shelving never utilizes all the storage space available. Additionally, there’s a probability of an untimely failure. “We have received calls from homeowners asking for a custom design when their wire pantry collapses in the middle of the night or they come home to find all their clothes dumped on the floor,” said Dennis Falls, a designer and co-owner of Tailored Living of Knoxville. “There

can be inherent structure problems with wiring. Often the anchoring system is not sufficient to support hundreds of pounds of clothes or pantry food.” A custom closet is not only more durable, it also: »» Maximizes Storage Space – A custom design adds 30-40% more storage space than wire or do-it-yourself kits. »» Fits Any Budget – A custom closet doesn’t mean expensive. A simple design will still maximize storage space. An experienced designer can help meet almost any budget. »» Offers Adjustability – As your needs change, shelves and rods can be adjusted, converting shelves to hanging and vice versa, with no damage to the system or sheetrock. For kids’ closets and pantries, adjustability is a must. »» Provides Better Organization – There’s a place for everything, and everything has a place. When you open your closet or pantry, you’ll feel good about yourself. No more emotional stress about feeling disorganized.

»» Increases Home Value – Whether moving in a few years or not, professionally designed closets are high on the list of features homebuyers are looking for today. The amount of square footage a home has doesn’t matter nearly as much as how well the space inside is used. With classic white or a wood-grain finish, the difference is dramatic. Once you have a custom closet, you will never want to have wire again!

Create the Ultimate Baking Station with Organization Tips

W

hether you bake on certain holidays or every weekend, it’s helpful to have the supplies and ingredients at your fingertips when the mood strikes you. Before you get started, survey your kitchen for everything you might need for baking so you can determine how much space to carve out. By creating a special section in your kitchen for baking, you can easily access everything you need whenever you want. Here are some tips for setting up a baking/prep station in your kitchen.

within the triangle that has usable counter space for your baking station. Clear a section of your cabinets to store cookbooks, ingredients, and small bowls. Glass jars are a functional and decorative way to store sugar, flour, and other frequently used ingredients in your cabinet. When you can see your ingredients, it’s easier to keep track of inventory. A stand-alone cart or rack can also be utilized as a baking station when cabinet space is limited. The key is to keep everything together in one section of your kitchen.

Location in the kitchen

Baking utensils and measuring cups

Most kitchens are set up around a functional triangle, incorporating the stove, sink, and refrigerator. Try to use an area

Keep measuring spoons and cups at eye level by hanging them on a peg board on

the inside of a cabinet door. Mixing utensils can be displayed on the counter in a decorative jar or in easy to access drawers. Measure your drawer space to configure different size organizers. The wider ones are perfect for spatulas and whisks, while the smaller ones can house food coloring, sprinkles, and more.

Baking sheets and muffin tins Vertical dividers can help you to see and access baking sheets and tins in the lower cabinets. This customizable solution is also great for cutting boards, baking dishes, and serving platters. If you’re tight on cabinet space, consider using a large basket to store these items.

Mixers and bowls Store small appliances and bowls on glide-out shelving beneath your workable counter space to keep your counters clear when not in use. Mixers tend to be heavy and bulky and often difficult to store. Glide-out shelving allows you to look at everything in the cabinet without having to move around all the items every time you need something. A dedicated space can make baking easy and more enjoyable. Set aside some time to create a baking station in your kitchen. When it comes time to make your next batch of cookies, you’ll be glad you did! ShelfGenie® 865-409-1197 www.shelfgenie.com/east-tennessee

All Clean Pressure Washing

M

ost homeowners are very familiar with home pressure washing services. Performed by an experienced pressure washing company, pressure washing can enhance the appearance of our home and extend the life expectancy on many of our home’s out-of-door surfaces, including siding, concrete, pavers, fencing, and more. Done improperly, pressure washing can actually damage these same outdoor surfaces, dramatically reducing the life of these surfaces such as decks. Also, performed by an inexperienced operator, surface damage from pressure washing can actually detract from your home’s curb appeal. With 25 years of experience, All Clean owner, Steve Davis, has the experience

that homeowners depend upon to safely and efficiently pressure wash your home’s exteriors, gutters and downspouts, concrete drives and walkways, pool decks, patios and decks, fences, pavers, and much more without damage to surrounding surfaces, landscaping materials, or plants. A member of the Loudon County Chamber of Commerce and fully licensed and insured, All Clean can help you achieve the pressure washing results you deserve with the safety and confidence that only comes with 25 years of experience. Even though this was the second time we had built, Kit Keener helped us by giving us great suggestions to make our house a home here in Tennessee. The result was an awesome home that we love. One thing we liked was their approach to the customer; they treated us like we were family, trying to make sure we got the best within our budget. Any concerns we had were dealt with quickly and professionally by their staff, so we found the experience so much easier this time versus the first time we had built. Community Church at Tellico Village Goes Worldwide

T

he Community Church at Tellico Village serves a wide area of Loudon/Blount/Monroe counties in East Tennessee, and it is now expanding its impact worldwide with two separate strategies. The first impact involves bringing their 10:15 am service to the Internet via a live YouTube feed every Sunday. It is now possible not only to watch and worship with this dynamic congregation from anywhere on Sunday morning, but also past services are archived on the church’s website. By simply visiting the church’s website and with one click, you can enjoy the 80+ person choir, hear an important message, and celebrate using a phone, personal computer, or smart TV. To learn more or to watch a service, simply visit www.tellicochurch.com. “We believe that while we look outward within our surrounding communities to serve, reaching those that are beyond our local area or are challenged with travel allows us to increase our mission and service,” said Steve Prevatte, Sr. Pastor. “Using the Internet with our live broadcast each Sunday to share our message or traveling to provide service to others that are less fortunate allows our congregation to share their blessings.” The second impact is the new “Go Forth” ministry. This new mission was created to assist those local, national, or international communities that need support after a natural disaster. This past year more than $40,000 was raised, and a team from the Community Church traveled

to southern Florida to provide aid, clean up, and support to victims of the massive hurricane. A new trip is now being planned to travel to North Carolina to provide support to a local community due to the recent flooding from hurricane Florence. Locally the church’s “Go Forth” team is coordinating with Loudon and Monroe counties to understand their local disaster plans and needs. The church is currently planning to provide food services utilizing their kitchen facilities and deliver to those individuals in need or provide meals to firefighters, first responders, or others to the area. The Community Church also invites everyone to their spaghetti dinners, free movie nights, and Fine Arts concert series. To learn more, visit www.tellicochurch.com/events. The Community Church at Tellico Village is an inter-denominational church welcoming all faiths with services on Sunday at 8 and 10:15 am. This year they are celebrating 30 years serving the local communities in Loudon and Monroe counties. For more information, listen to our message at www.TellicoChurch.org. Annual Meeting at The Public Library at Tellico Village

O

n Wednesday, November 14, the Annual Meeting for the Friends of The Public Library at Tellico Village will be held at 7 pm in the Christian Life Center of the Community Church of Tellico Village. All are welcome! The evening will include library updates and the election of officers by members of the Friends. You won’t want to miss the main event of the evening – the program presented by Dr. William M. Bass, Forensic Anthropologist, best-selling author (fiction and non-fiction that centers around

forensics and bodies), and creator of “The Body Farm.” The University of Tennessee Professor Emeritus is widely regarded as a foremost expert in this field. He has many experiences to share – 48 years and 700 cases – although he does acknowledge not all have been solved, but even that is a lesson learned. Maybe as many as 30-40 remain unsolved and pose the questions what have I missed and what can I do better? There is no charge for this presentation. For more information, call The Public Library at Tellico Village at 865-458-5199.

Dollywood Hosts Light the Way 5K Walk/Run November 16

P

Proceeds benefit Keep Sevier Beautiful & Share It Forward, an assistance program for Dollywood employees

articipants in the seventh annual Light the Way 5K Run/Walk get to see Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas festival in a different light – actually five million lights – as the theme park hosts this special event on Friday, November 16, beginning at 11:18 pm. Proceeds from the event benefit Keep Sevier Beautiful (KSB) and the Share It Forward (SIF) program at Dollywood. KSB, an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, is a volunteer-based organization that focuses on waste reduction/recycling, litter prevention, and beautifying public spaces through education and community-based programs. KSB’s goal is to protect the natural beauty of the area that millions of visitors come to see each year. SIF is a non-profit organization to serve The Dollywood Company employees and their families through a variety

of quality programs. SIF programming is funded primarily through employee donations, which are matched dollar for dollar by The Dollywood Company and, up to specified limits, by the shareholders of Herschend Family Entertainment, the park’s operating partner. “The beauty of Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas festival combined with the challenge of a course that only a theme park can provide makes Light the Way a one-of-a-kind event for runners and walkers,” said Aaron Newberry, Executive Director of Share It Forward. “But, most importantly, this event helps provide our nonprofit organizations with financial assistance just before the holidays,” added Lisa Bryant, Executive Director of Keep Sevier Beautiful. Light the Way 5K Run/Walk participants are

treated to a unique course decorated by the park’s five million Christmas lights, beginning their journey at Dollywood’s preferred parking entrance, traversing through the parking lot, and then winding through the theme park. The certified race will be chip timed and managed by Scenic City Multi-Sports. Awards will be presented to the top three overall for male and female participants. Pre-registration is encouraged for the Light the Way 5K, as the race is limited to 2,018 participants. Registration fee until race day is $45. Register online at www. lighttheway5k.net. Race day registration takes place from 11 am to 10 pm at the front gate area at Dollywood’s Splash Country. For more information, email info@ keepsevierbeautiful.org or visit www.lighttheway5k.net.

Dolly Parton Selects the Great Smoky Mountains for Second Pirates Voyage Dinner and Show

K

eep an eye to the spyglass, mateys! Dolly’s pirates will be searching for treasure in the Great Smoky Mountains next summer! After nearly a decade of rave reviews and financial success on the Carolina coast, Dolly Parton’s newest Pirates Voyage dinner attraction is slated to open in the spring. “The show has been so successful in Myrtle Beach that we kept looking at Pigeon Forge and wondering why we didn’t already have a Pirates show there,” said Parton.

“We have the perfect location, in one of the hottest areas of Pigeon Forge, and the time is now for my pirates to stake claim to the Great Smoky Mountains!” When complete, the 21,000 square foot arena, adjacent to The Island in Pigeon Forge, will be the stage for Crimson and Sapphire pirates to battle on deck, in the water, and in the sky above their full-sized pirate ships in a 15-foot-deep indoor lagoon. Spectacular acrobatic competitions, live animals, and an original music score by Parton and Mark Brymer

creates an immersive adventure experience, all while guests enjoy a spectacular four-course pirate feast. “We’re glad we can finally share Dolly’s exciting news,” said Jim Rule, World Choice Investments CEO. “For some time, we have been working on set and costume designs, unique show elements for this theater, and animal and staff training. We’re all looking forward to opening in 2019.” Site construction is slated to begin in early January with an opening projected for spring.

Broadway Studios and Gallery Art Exhibit

B

roadway Studios and Gallery (BSG) presents Lange, Peters, and Kidd, an art exhibit opening on First Friday, November 2, from 5 to 9 pm and on display through December 1st. Three artists offer a variety of art to enjoy. Christian Lange (Santiago, Chile) is a local veteran of the arts who creates fine art black and white photographs of the human figure with impeccable technique. His work is very refined, sophisticated, and beautiful.

Charles Peters (Kingsport, TN) is a 20-year-old wunderkind making his second exhibit appearance. His work has recently evolved beyond his age in the discipline of Abstract Expressionist painting. His works are organic and challenging. Jeanne Kidd (Long Island, NY) has work in collections as far away as Israel. Her works are marble abstractions, where she says she lets the shape flow out of both the marble and her imagination. Her pieces are

unique and sublime. BSG is located at 1127 N Broadway in Knoxville. Regular business hours are 10-6 Friday and Saturday. BSG is a collective of 10 artists working under one roof. They operate a retail space, curate monthly art exhibits, and teach private lessons. For more information, call Cynthia Tipton at 865-851-2824, email BroadwayStudiosAndGallery@gmail.com or visit www. Friends of the Smokies to Expand Its Kodak Footprint

F

riends of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Great Smoky Mountains Association, two of the national park’s oldest and most profitable partners, have shared space at the Sevierville Visitor Center on Winfield Dunn Parkway near Interstate 40 for more than a decade. GSMA has operated a retail space on the ground level, where it offers visitors educational items designed to enrich their Smoky Mountain experience, while FOTS staff occupied office space directly above. However, the organizations’ roles have transformed over time. One has outgrown its share of the space, while the other has felt the need to scale back, making the next move obvious. GSMA plans to close its retail store by November 1, and Friends of the Smokies will convert the first floor into much-needed additional office space. “For 12 years, GSMA has been helping area visitors plan their Great Smoky Mountains National Park adventures and offering a comprehensive selection of award-winning books and other educational materials in our beautiful Sevierville Visitor Center store,” said Laurel Rematore, GSMA CEO. “The volume of this store’s customer traffic has been steady but has never reached the level we had hoped for in this location.” “While we have greatly enjoyed having GSMA as our downstairs neighbors, we know this opportunity will

allow both park partners to more effectively support the park we love,” said Jim Hart, FOTS President. “We are pleased that our former store space will be put to good use by giving Friends of the Smokies more elbow room to do what they do so well,” said Rematore. “GSMA will continue to serve park visitors at its Gatlinburg Welcome Center and 11 other stores in and around the park.” Friends of the Smokies is an official non-profit partner of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and has raised $62 million to support critical park programs

and maintain the Smokies as a crown jewel of the National Park Service. Discover and donate at www. FriendsOfTheSmokies.org. Since its inception in 1953, Great Smoky Mountains Association has supported the preservation of Great Smoky Mountains National Park by promoting greater public understanding and appreciation through education, interpretation, and research. A non-profit organization, GSMA has provided more than $42 million to the park during its 65-year history. For more information, visit www.SmokiesInformation.org.

“I’m the luckiest guy you’ve never heard of.”

T

hat’s how master musician, Robert Berry, describes himself. That may be true when it comes to the bulk of music fans but not for those who get into the nuts and bolts of music and how it’s made. He’s arguably most known as the bassist/ vocalist for 3, the Emerson, Lake, and Palmer spinoff that consisted of Berry, Carl Palmer, and Keith Emerson. Additionally, he was vocalist and guitarist for Ambrosia (from 2000-2010) and has worked with Alliance, December People, and the Greg Kihn Band. If being a studio wiz and band member wasn’t enough, Robert has also

released five solo projects and has pitched in on an impressive number of tribute albums. His latest project is titled “3.2 – The Rules Have Changed.” It’s an album that was to be the follow-up to 3’s debut album and would’ve had featured Keith Emerson. However, as music fans know, Keith left us far too soon in March 2016. It’s about 3.2 that I caught up with Robert by phone at his Silicon Valley home recently. We started with the background to the album. “Keith, Carl, and I had a band called 3. In 1987, we got together. In 1988, it came out. We toured. We had a Top Ten hit. We

had a very successful tour.” After a great debut album and a very successful tour, the band broke up. Fastforward almost 30 years, and the record industry began to clamor for something from 3 again. “I said okay. We had four songs written with ideas and another one in concept. I had all kinds of files from him – digital things of pieces where he had recorded the keyboard parts. I had a cassette tape from 1988 with a song we didn’t use that I now thought was really great.’ Then came the news that rocked his world and that of the rock music world. “In three months, I get a call from Keith’s ex-wife, Eleanor, who I knew well when I lived in England when we were working on the first album. She said, ‘Keith’s gone.’ I’m like, ‘What?’ ‘Yeah, he’s gone.’ “I hung up the phone. It really hit me hard. That was the only time I had a Top Ten record – it was with Keith Emerson, and he was the sound of it. We’d stayed friends for 27 years. Done all kinds of things. He was my highest profile friend. The guy who’s always going to be in the history books. He was a funny guy. Of course I had always had that dream of a second 3 album, because for me, that was the best thing and greatest success that I had ever had as a musician. “Here it was, coming around again, and all of a sudden – boom! All of that was gone. One phone call. Gone. It was really tough on me. It’s hard for me to explain, because I’d

lost my dad and I’d lost some friends to cancer, and it’s always very sad for me. But that loss hasn’t also impacted my career and how I kind of defined myself and my goals, so this one was a triple whammy – a quadruple whammy. I lost so much in so many ways. But of course, mostly a really sweet, funny friend that I just loved talking to. He always made me feel like a viable part of the music community, because Keith Emerson was my friend. It was really amazing! “It haunted me. I’m thinking, ‘I’m just going to do it as 1 and we’ll see where it heads.’ A year later, it’s done. I sent Serafino a copy – the rough mixes. He said, ‘This is genius! We’ve got to put this out!’ I’m thinking, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah.’ “This was a year of me sitting alone in my studio in the dark saying, ‘What would Keith do here? What would I do if he did that?’ Sort of taking on both sides of the conversation.” And what has the response been from Keith’s family and friends to the album? “I got the nicest post from Aaron Emerson, his son. I can’t remember exactly what he wrote, but it was something like, ‘I know it was a labor of love. You did a great job. We’re proud of the album.’ Gave it his stamp of approval.” There’s no doubt that Keith Emerson fans will give “3.2 – The Rules Have Changed” their stamp of approval, too. T

he Annual Garage Sale and Boutique on October 6 raised more than $14,000 for local charities, according to Tony Gibbons, Loudon County Habitat for Humanity Executive Director. Habitat co-sponsored the event with the Community Church at Tellico Village Crafters and was the recipient of some of the funds raised. Items not sold at the garage sale are now available at the Habitat ReStore, located at 303 Simpson Road, E. in Lenoir City. On October 5, Loudon County Habitat for Humanity volunteers, staff, and partner families, Crafters, and church volunteers picked up large donations, unloaded cars, and sorted and priced the merchandise in preparation for the Annual Garage Sale and Boutique at the Community Church at Tellico Village. “The volume of donated items and the number of shoppers require hundreds of volunteer hours,” said Kathy Blevins, one of the co-chairs of the event. “Many people help with this event year after year, but we always welcome a lot of new volunteers as well.” At 8 am on Saturday morning, the doors opened for the enthusiastic crowd. “It was a great turnout and a true community effort,” said Gibbons. “We are amazed how it continues to grow each year and are

grateful for the long-term partnerships that make that possible.” “There were lots of interesting items left after the sale, so if you missed it, you can come by the store for a second chance at that item that you just have to have,” said Christy Callahan, ReStore Manager. “We want to thank our co-sponsor, the Community Church at Tellico Village Crafters, the volunteers, the donors, and all the many, many shoppers,” said Gibbon. “All of you are helping address the need for affordable, safe housing for families here in Loudon County.” Loudon County Habitat for Humanity is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a worldwide Christian housing organization. All funds to build in Loudon County are raised locally to provide safe, affordable houses for low-income families who are willing to partner with Habitat. These partner families help build their houses and then buy them from Habitat through a no-interest, no-profit mortgage. Funds from these mortgages go into a Fund for Humanity, which allows Habitat to build other houses. For more information, call Sammie Shanks at 865-640-5578 or Lori Galbraith at 865-776-0094.

Don’t Miss These Tax Strategies for Charitable Giving

I

By Yvonne Marsh, CFP®, CPA

read an interesting statistic that said more than 30% of charitable giving is done in December of each year. If it’s on your mind to support your favorite church or charity before the year-end, don’t forget these tax tips: If you are over age 70½, have a portion of your IRA’s Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) paid directly to your favorite charity according to the Qualified Charitable Distribution rules. Those rules require that you have the charitable gift sent directly from your IRA to the charity. The gift amount is then excluded from the taxable amount of your RMD. For the majority of retirees who take a standard deduction, this restores the tax benefit of charitable giving. Be aware, though, that your IRA custodian is not required to report the QCD on your annual 1099, so you must tell your tax preparer so it can be properly reflected

on your tax return. Perhaps you would like to leave some of your assets to a charity after your passing. Instead of naming a charity directly in your will, name it as a beneficiary on your IRA accounts. Why? Pre-tax IRA accounts are fully taxable to your heirs, whereas non-IRA accounts get a “stepped-up basis” at your passing. The step-up wipes out any embedded gains so your heirs don’t pay income tax on those accounts. It makes more tax sense to give a fully-taxable IRA to a charity, who by definition doesn’t have to pay any taxes, and leave the stepped-up assets to your family. You don’t have to give the whole IRA to your charity – you can allocate as little as 1% on your beneficiary form and you can change the form anytime. Lastly, if you have appreciated investments, give those assets to a charity rather than cash. Once the charity receives the investments, they can sell them without recog-

nizing any taxable gain. Also, you get a charitable deduction for the full market value of the donation. It’s a win for both you and the charity! If you would like to learn more or would like to talk about whatever financial topic is on your mind, call today to schedule your one-hour complimentary meeting. Knoxville Opera Event at Rarity Bay Country Club T

2B • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, November, 2018

he Knoxville Opera made its milestone 10th visit to Rarity Bay Country Club on September 20. This is one of the biggest events of the year at Rarity Bay due to its uniqueness and intimate setting. This year’s performance included selections from the Opera, Operetta, and Broadway repertoires paired with a three-course plated meal prepared by the Executive Chef, Justin Holleman, at Rarity Bay Country Club. Maestro Brian Salesky, Executive Director and Conductor of the Knoxville Opera, directed and accompanied Jacquie Brecheen (Soprano), Tori Franklin (Mezzo-Soprano), and Derek Stull (Baritone). These singers represented the highest level of vocal accomplishment. The extensive and rigorous training for an opera singer is unmatched in our world of music. They are required to not only deliver the perfect pitch and meter of the music, but to produce the dramatic

performance, facial expressions, movement on stage, and interaction with other performers that the opera composer intended. Then to this they must add their own gifts that distinguish one fine performer from the next. This is the pinnacle of the art form, and we are pleased to be able to offer it in an intimate setting in Rarity Bay. We look forward to the Knoxville Opera returning the Rarity Bay in the years to come. A big thank you to the Rarity Bay Ad Hoc Opera Committee for organizing another wonderful opera event. “On behalf of the Rarity Bay Ad Hoc Opera Committee, we wish to convey our warmest appreciation for the fine arrangements, excellent meal, and top-notch service provided at the performance of Knoxville Opera at the Rarity Bay Country Club.” - The Rarity Bay Ad Hoc Opera Committee

Jambo moved to Knoxville on a “matchmaking” recommendation of the Chimpanzee Species Survival Plan, which is a national collaborative effort of accredited zoos to save chimps from extinction. An intelligent and confident chimp, Jambo quickly made friends with the zoo’s seven other chimpanzees upon her arrival in June. Since Jambo has never had any offspring, the next step will be to hone her maternal skills with training before proceeding with plans for her to become a mom as part of standard pre-natal protocol. When her caretakers feel confident she’s ready for motherhood, it will be up to Jambo to decide which of the resident males-Jimbo, George, Ripley, or Lu-catch her fancy. Chimpanzees are endangered and their wild populations continue to decline. The major threats to wild chimpanzees are illegal poaching for bushmeat, habitat loss due to logging, mining and agriculture expansion, and disease such as ebola Tellico Area’s First Choice for All of Your and respiratory illnesses. Create Your Home’s Holiday Kitchen Memories By Patti Baker, Co-Owner of Granite Transformations

M

y mother’s kitchen in our family’s Pennsylvania home has always been a very special place to me, going all of the way back to my childhood, particularly during the holidays. It was always the favorite place where aunts, uncles, cousins, and close family friends seemed to instinctively gather. I still have fond memories of newborn nieces and nephews and fiancés being introduced to other family members for the very first time. I remember roasted Thanksgiving Day turkeys, children decorating Christmas cookies, and festive New Year’s and Super Bowl celebrations. And I have since begun creating our very own memories in our family’s kitchen with my children and grandchildren just like my mom – memories that we will cherish for a lifetime. Our kitchens remain the centerpiece of American family life and a very special place for creating a lifetime of memories. Unlike any other room in our home, our kitchen exudes a sense of warmth and comfort that welcomes family members and guests. During the last 13 years, my husband, Buddy, and I have helped thousands of other area families create their own special

gathering place in their home’s kitchen. As owners of Granite Transformations, we have helped countless homeowners transform their kitchens into that unique place we cherished as children. It’s a room unlike any other room in our home, where they can create all-new memories of their own – memories that will last them a lifetime. And it’s that special room that we will think back to with the fondest of memories as we age. The centerpiece of the Granite Transformations’ story is their patented premium engineered granite countertops. They are made from the finest granite, quartz, and post-consumer recycled glass – the highest quality materials combined with stateof-the-art technology – to produce the finest granite countertop surfaces on the market. All the beauty nature has to offer, only better. You deserve the best, and you can get it without the demolition and installation headaches associated with ordinary slab granite. Granite Transformations’ surfaces outperform ordinary granite, because they are non-porous, stain resistant, and maintenancefree. There is no sealing necessary, so safe food preparation is assured. mixed baby greens farmer first introduced me to mizuna 10 years ago, and I’ve been growing it ever since. I worked on his farm in Haiku, Hawaii, for two years, where we grew six varieties of greens for salad mix. Mizuna, or Brassica rapa var. niposinica, was the most reliable, fastest growing one of them all. Though it is technically a mustard, mizuna is so mild that we used it as the basis for the hundreds of pounds of salad mix that we delivered once a week to one of the island’s top resorts. Luckily for us mainlanders, mizuna doesn’t require a tropical island to thrive. This seed-grown biennial performs well in temperate climates, providing attractive, nutritious leaves for much of the growing season. Mizuna exhibits both heat and cold tolerance, which means you can stretch your harvest window into late spring/early summer and through the fall into early winter during most years. It tends to bolt once summer temperatures consistently hit 90 degrees and hotter, but you can start growing it again in early fall when the weather begins to cool. It grows best with full sun exposure in rich, moist, welldrained soil, but it is also tolerant of light shade, lean soil, and low moisture. Flea beetles are the only pest that has bothered mizuna in our UT Kitchen Garden in Knoxville. One solution is to use row covers, or you can pull the plants out and start over in a different spot later in the season. In the U.S., mizuna has become a common ingredient in fresh salad mix, but in Japan and throughout Asia, it’s most often cooked in soups, stir-fry, or pot stickers. It can be harvested as mi-

crogreens, as tender baby greens, or as a cut-and-come-again leafy green. Farmers generally direct sow the seeds, but the plant can be easily be transplanted as well. Cornell University lists 16 different varieties on its Vegetable Varieties for Gardeners website, but chances are good that there are even more than that. The most common type is green and frilly with a tender white stem that can be eaten along with the leaf. It looks great as a border plant in the vegetable garden or mixed into a cool-season container. There are also beautiful red and purple selections. ‘Red Kingdom’ was named an All-America Selections Edible Winner in 2016, and it’s my new favorite variety. It looks very similar to the strong flavored ‘Red Giant’ mustard, but it tastes light and sweet with a mild pepper undertone. You can find both red and green varieties of mizuna growing in the UT Gardens, Knoxville. The UT Gardens include plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The Gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit www.ag.tennessee. edu/utg.

White Oak on the UTIA Indian Mound Listed as a Historic Tree Stately White Oak Named “The Morgan Tree” after Harcourt Morgan

A

stately white oak on the campus of the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture has been included as an historic tree on the Tennessee Landmark, Historic, and Heritage Photo by E. Haskey, Tree Registry, a list maintained courtesy UTIA by the Tennessee Urban Forestry Council. Located on the corner of Joe Johnson Drive and Chapman Drive and on top of the “Indian Mound,” the white oak (Quercus alba L.) that measures nearly 46 inches in circumference has been a landmark on campus for more than a century. Nominated for inclusion on the registry by Scott E. Schlarbaum, a professor of forest genetics, the Indian Mound on which the tree grows dates from the late Woodland period (roughly 1,000 years ago) and has witnessed the formation of the nation, the Civil War and our history to the present day. The tree itself has witnessed UT’s first agricultural research efforts and the formation and growth of UTIA, which is celebrating its 50th year. Schlarbaum says acorns from the tree have been collected by UT’s Tree Improvement Program, and the resulting seedlings will be incorporated into a genetic test to be planted on the Tennessee Valley Authority’s Norris Reservation in 2019. The genetic test will eventually be thinned to produce a seed orchard that will supply the State Nursery with acorns for reforestation and restoration purposes specifically for eastern Tennessee. Schlarbaum directs the UT Tree Improvement Program. Schlarbaum recommended that the tree be named after Harcourt Morgan, a professor of zoology and entomology who served as director of the Tennessee Agricultural Experiment Station beginning in 1905. Morgan, for whom the UTIA headquarters building Morgan Hall is named, eventually rose to the rank of UT president from 1919 until 1934 and was named to serve on the original TVA board of directors by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, becoming chairman in 1938. Morgan’s philosophy emphasized a harmonious relationship between humans and the environment, which he called a “Common Mooring.” By encouraging farmers to practice crop rotation among other beneficial practices, and through his work on boll weevils and cattle ticks, Morgan had a large impact on the agricultural industry in Tennessee and across the Mid South. The 27th Annual Conference of the Tennessee Urban Forestry Council convened October 14 and 15 at Cheekwood Estates in Nashville, and the tree was added to the registry at that event. “The Tennessee Urban Forestry Council is deeply rooted in promoting healthy and sustainable urban and community forests that contribute to clean air and water, economic stability, and beautiful green places in which all Tennesseans

and future generations will live, work, and play,” said Sharon Jean-Philippe, an associate professor of forestry who is serving as the current president of the organization. TUFC is a non-profit organization supported by members of businesses, groups, and individuals with an interest in urban forestry. The Morgan Tree has seen many changes and improvements made throughout the years on the UTIA campus. The 36-acre tract of land on which it resides was purchased in 1904 as an agricultural research farm. As described in An Honored Calling – A History of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, the University of Tennes-

see, by Professor Horace C. Smith (edited by Lisa Byerley Gary), many students had to work to attend school, and many of those students worked on the farm. Schlarbaum says it’s not hard to imagine those students and faculty eating lunch under the shade of the white oak. Today students, faculty, and staff of the Herbert College of Agriculture and UTIA pass the Morgan Tree on their way to work or class. The “UT Ag Farm Mound,” on which the tree resides, was entered in 1978 on the National Register of Historic Places and is maintained as a Native American Interpretive Garden, providing a green space for people to enjoy the Morgan Tree as well as other beautiful native plants.

November in the Garden

E

ven though I absolutely hate being cold, November is one of my favorite months. Yes, I know I said that about October, too, but October decided it was going to be summer for the first couple of weeks! The heat hung around like an unwelcome houseguest. It looks like fall weather has finally arrived, so now I can bring out my fall clothes and eat fall food and enjoy all the beauty as nature prepares for the winter. November is an important month in the garden, because it is the month when it is time to finish “putting your garden to bed.” Yes, it is ok to not do a darn thing outside for the rest of the year, but you will regret it next spring when you are battling insects, diseases, and weeds! Here are the things I recommend doing before you tell your yard goodbye for the season: 1. The first step is to go out and walk all the way around your yard. Remember to look up, down, and all around. Make notes and give yourself a to-do list for pretty days this winter when you have spring fever and are desperate to work outside. This is also a good time to plan for changes you would like to make next year. 2. Step two is a final clean-up. You don’t have to make it pristine, however! Seed bearing annuals and perennials can be left as a food source for birds. What is most important is that you get up leaves that had fungal or insect problems. If those are allowed to remain on the ground, they will create a breeding ground for those problems to recur again next year. While you are out there, check your shrubs for invaders. Privet, honeysuckle, grapevines, and hackberries like to camouflage themselves in your shrubbery. It is also important to stay ahead of the weeds. Some of you don’t realize that you need to keep applying a pre-emergent to your beds even during the winter. Henbit, chickweed, and pop-weed seeds are already in those beds just waiting to emerge! Take care of them now and your spring weeding will be less of a chore. 3. Step three is to add compost or other amendments to your soil. Bagged compost and manure can also be used. If you add them now, they will break down during the winter and the nutrients will be available to your plants in the spring.

BY LISA GRUGIN

4. The last step is mulching. A 3” layer of mulch will keep soil moisture and temperature levels more stable during the winter. Do not pile the mulch around your plants, and do not make tree volcanoes! Once you get your yard all cleaned up, you may decide that you need a few more plants. Fall is a great time to install larger trees and shrubs. This gives them time to get their roots established, since our soil almost never freezes. Many perennials also do well if planted in the fall. Pansies and violas can still be planted to give you a wonderful show of color during the colder months. Bulbs should be planted by the end of November or placed into the refrigerator to chill. What do you need to do about all those leaves that are falling this month? It depends on how many trees you have. If you have several large trees, the leaves will likely pile up deep enough to kill your grass. Those will require removal. If you just have a couple of smaller trees, removal isn’t as critical, and you can actually use those leaves as mulch. Remember to run over your leaves with a lawn mower to chop them up before using them! Rodney blows ours out into the lawn, runs over them a couple of times with the mower, and then blows them back into the beds. Don’t forget to keep our feathered friends in mind during the upcoming months. All ceramic or concrete birdbaths should be drained and stored for the winter, but think about buying a small plastic or metal replacement. Birds get thirsty and dirty in the winter, too! It is also critical that you keep your feeders clean and full as natural sources of food become scarce. I will finish by reminding you that we are a great source for your holiday decorating needs. We have poinsettias from our family farm in Fentress County and freshly cut trees and greenery from a farm in North Carolina. Our gift shop is filling up with terrific ornaments and décor to make your home lovely. Next month I will give you a detailed list of care instructions for holiday plants. Until then, I wish all of you a wonderful Thanksgiving! Meadow View Greenhouses & Garden Center 9885 Highway 11E Lenoir City, TN 37772 865-986-7229 www.meadowviewgreenhouse.com

Big or Small: We Do It All! Inside or Out: Give Us a Shout!

By Christina Fitzwilliam, Co-Owner of Surface Doc

L

et me apologize for that lengthy title. For this month’s article, my husband, John, wanted me to write something that encompassed ALL we do. Ten years ago we were a “tile and grout” company that also did carpet, so a catchy subject was a pretty short order. But a decade later we have found ourselves specializing in so many other surfaces that it makes for a lengthy title! Most everyone around Knoxville knows that we are the best at cleaning tile and grout, but surprisingly we still have clients that don’t know that one of our most in-demand services is exterior natural stone (bluestone, flagstone, slate, etc.). We also do all sorts of carpet cleaning, from steam extraction to Roto-vac restoration, both with eco-friendly cleaners. For our clients that want to go the extra mile, we offer Scotchgard protection. We continue to resurrect many carpets and save our clients costly replacements. But back to our exterior services. What began as mostly driveways and walkways expanded quickly to docks, pool decks, and composite decking. As word got around about how good we were at exterior surfaces, we began to get numerous requests for soft washing and vertical surfaces. So this year we invested in equipment to safely soft wash houses and roofs made of sensitive and exotic material: Cedar shakes and shingles, stucco, vinyl, and brick. For roofs, we can tackle asphalt shingles, slate, clay, and even metal. Once

your outdoor surfaces are clean, many areas can be sealed to protect it for years from the abuse of Mother Nature. Why is our soft-washing so effective? What makes us better than other companies? To start with, we have been fortunate enough to have partnered with the manufacturers of a top-quality soft wash solution. Since the product we use also contains a commercial grade rinse aid, when Surface Doc does an exterior soft wash, you also get the added benefit of clean windows! In addition, our cleaning technicians will go the extra mile to treat your property with care to ensure nothing gets damaged. We encourage you to visit our webpage (www. surfacedoc.com), Facebook (@surfacedoc), or our Instagram (surfacedocinc) to review our weekly photos

of current clients. If you are curious about YOUR troublesome surface, chances are you’ll find exactly what you are looking for in one of our past jobs. If you’ve been a client of ours, you may even see your floor or outdoor surfaces pictured! With the holidays upon us, there’s no doubt that you are sprucing up for your relatives and friends. Surface Doc is the one call that does it all; inside or out, give us a SHOUT! Our professional team will show up and help you tackle your most daunting tasks. Give us a call today and have a cleaner tomorrow! Surface Doc 865-567-1986 www.surfacedoc.com

Why You Need Rodent Control

H

ere are five reasons you need Dayton’s for rodent control: 1. According to the Center for Disease Control, mice and rats can spread at least 35 diseases to humans. Infections may be spread through droppings, urine, saliva, rodent bites, or fleas and ticks that have fed on an infected rodent. 2. Their teeth never stop growing, and that’s one reason their gnawing can cause damage to your home. A rat’s teeth and jaws can gnaw through substances as hard as lead sheeting and cinder block. 3. A full-blown infestation can happen very fast and requires more vigorous control measures. A female mouse can have up to 15 litters in one year (10-12 mice/litter) and can get pregnant again 24 hours after giving birth! 4. Because rodents are smart, they can often find their way back into your home even if their customary entrance has been blocked off.

5. Rodents are always foraging for food, and it’s hard to keep them out of your home without some preventative measure, for they can squeeze through very small openings. Professional pest control is the best way to prevent or remediate a rodent problem. Dayton’s will set up bait stations with a substance for rodents to eat and take back to their nest to share. These stations are hidden in out-of-the-way areas and have small entrance holes to prevent any danger to your pets. NEW CUSTOMERS will receive $25 OFF one preventative rodent treatment or $25 OFF one rodent control service with an annual pest agreement, which also includes insect pest control. All services are guaranteed! Dayton’s Pest Control 865-588-6686 www.daytonspestcontrol.com
