From the Publisher

I LOVE April in Knoxville. You’ve

heard the old saying that “April showers bring May flowers,” and there are quite a few flowers that have already bloomed. But my favorite spring blooms are still to come. April brings the blossoming of the cherry trees, magnolias, and, of course, the dogwoods. And in the Knoxville area, April is dedicated to the dogwoods, celebrating those blooms with a month-long festival. Activities for the 2015 Dogwood Arts Festival is included in this edition. With the coming of spring, the focus is on indoor and outdoor cleanup, and our advertisers this month offer a variety of products, services, and tips to make home cleanup and spruce up almost painless. If you are ready to brighten your home inside and out, our feature article on CertaPro Painters of East Tennessee is who you need

to call to get your home spring ready. The owners, Jeff and Joann Brown, and their team of professionals not only can brighten the interior and exterior of your home, but they also offer services beyond residential and commercial painting to provide a turn-key, one source experience. Read about their services that can benefit you this spring season. April in Knoxville is full of activity as our calendar of events will show, and we at Everything Knoxville hope you can get out and enjoy some of these events. Of course the Dogwood Arts Festival dominates the month with a variety of activities not only in downtown Knoxville but all across the Greater Knoxville area. Enjoy the blooms of the season and this great spring weather. It’s time to shed the winter blues and enjoy the bright colors of spring in East Tennessee.

Much More Than Knoxville Area’s Most Trusted and Referred Residential Painters

E

ARNING A surprising 98%

customer approval /referral rating and several Angie’s List Super Service awards, you might think that CertaPro Painters of East Tennessee has earned a reputation as the area’s most trusted and referred residential painters. While this is true, what you may not know is that CertaPro Painters of East Tennessee also established a reputation for a wide variety of other home renovation, repair, and remodeling services, including carpentry, deck restoration, pressure washing, drywall, staining, wallpapering, and wallpaper removal. CertaPro Painters of East Tennessee also offers area business office/retail business owners, schools, churches, healthcare facilities, managed properties, and more a full line of commercial painting services. With the addition of all of these to their full array of interior and exterior painting services, CertaPro Painters of East Tennessee offers area homeowners a complete turn-key solution for many of their home’s renovation, repair, and remodeling needs. Everything Knoxville is excited to share with its readers an interview with CertaPro Painters of East Tennessee’s owners, and husband and wife team, Jeff and Joann Brown. EK: Jeff, how would you describe the 6

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE April 2015

CertaPro difference? Jeff: We strive to operate like a world-class service company! There is a perception in our industry that it is difficult to find a truly good contractor or painting company. As we speak, I have two project managers and four painting supervisors in a service training session in our training room. We spend a lot of time and resources training and coaching our painting crews, not just in application methods, but in customer service. We are deeply committed to meeting and exceeding customer expectations! In order to accomplish that, we are constantly learning and training with information provided by customer feedback and interaction. EK: You insist on personally providing your residential customers with comprehensive proposals on the spot and a rapid turnaround on commercial proposals. Tell our readers why this is so important and how this differs from the typical customer experience. Joann: We believe it is important while the scope of work and project is fresh in everyone’s minds to enter the proposal in the computer and print a detailed proposal on the spot and review in person with the customer carefully to ensure accuracy. Others may email you a brief estimate days later with little detail, leaving you uncertain of what is included or not included. It takes the guesswork out!

EK: How does your pricing compare to competitive pricing? Jeff: There is a misconception sometimes that as a professional company, we may be a little high. In fact, we frequently hear from our customers “oh, you are in line with the solo guy” or “that is less than what I was expecting.” We work hard to ensure our prices are competitive while providing a level of service above the competition! In addition, we are, in fact, licensed, bonded, insured, and have a two-year residential written warranty! EK: How have you been able to earn Angie’s List’s esteemed Super Service of the Year awards, as well as a 98% customer approval rating? Joann: We have understood since day one that the successful way to build and grow our company was to do whatever it takes within reason to meet and exceed customer expectations. Further, that word of mouth was the most powerful form of advertising. So, we have a mission to create customers for life and know that if we practice this business philosophy, the great scores will come! EK: Tell our readers about several of the services you provide homeowners in addition to quality interior and exterior painting. Jeff: We have been methodical and strategic to add services and value to our customers Photo by D. Roberts Photography

This winter we were privileged to have participated in a Homes for Our Troops new home build in our area. throughout the years as our competence levels increased at all levels of our organization. Early on we started repairing rotten wood on home exteriors. During the past 12 years, we have added many services to include deck build/rebuild, screen porch additions, interior trim carpentry, and custom built-ins to tile work and interior remodeling. We can now do most anything in the “home improvement” category well. We certainly offer other services and are happy to review them on the phone with potential customers. EK: Describe your unique five-step interior and exterior painting process and how that varies from what most competitors offer. Jeff: Our purpose is to ensure our customers get the same risk-free experience every time they utilize our services. So, our first step is to review the scope of work with the customer and the crew the morning the project starts to ensure we are all on the same page. Second, we set up the area to be painted/repaired and ensure furniture is moved, drop cloths are down, plastic covers things as needed, and the general “set up” is complete. The third phase is to perform any prep work (drywall repair, sanding, rotten wood replacement, etc.). The fourth step is when we actually start the painting or improvement project, and finally, we clean up, have the customer inspect with the crew, and collect our payment! EK: Joann, how does your commercial business unit process vary from your residential unit?

Joann: Depending on the type of property, some businesses need painting done monthly, so you develop a partnership with your customer. You might see them monthly or quarterly. They know they can depend on us to take care of whatever their needs may be and in the time frame they need. On a residential job, you might paint for a customer every four or five years, so you don’t see them as often. That is why we are excited to offer additional services besides painting. Homeowners are usually doing some sort of remodeling or home improvement, and we can help with most of those projects. Whether you are adding a deck or remodeling a bathroom, we can take care of that project for you. EK: You are committed to a goal of improving and exceeding your customers’ expectations. Explain. Jeff: Joann and I have been in some sort of service business our entire lives, so we grew up professionally in a very competitive service industry. We learned early on that the ONLY way to grow and keep our business healthy is to surround ourselves with people who understand that and take pride in what they do. Our two main goals every day is to meet and exceed customers’ expectations and to practice continuous improvement at every level. We are lucky to have a very dedicated and professional team at CertaPro! EK: How important do you feel it is that both of you are engaged in your business full time each and every day?

Joann: Our staff at CertaPro is remarkable, but Jeff and I both enjoy being involved in the day-to-day business. We like meeting our customers and helping with their individual needs. EK: How can our readers learn more about CertaPro Painters of East Tennessee? Jeff: Our estimates for painting and home improvement are free and with no obligations. Our team is very well-trained in most every aspect of the business, so the best way to learn is to call CertaPro and schedule a consultation/estimate appointment at a time that is convenient for you. EK: In closing, is there anything you would like to add? Jeff: First of all, we would like to express our appreciation to all of our customers for their support and encouragement. As our company has grown throughout the years, our ability to give back to the community has grown as well in many ways. For instance, this winter we were privileged to have participated in a Homes for Our Troops new home build in our area. HFOT is a wonderful organization that provides mortgage-free, specially adapted homes nationwide for severely injured veterans post 9/11, enabling them to rebuild their lives. When we got the call to help, as a veteran myself, I did not let the woman even finish asking if we could donate all the painting services before I said “yes, and when can we start?” I was asked to speak at the key ceremony and felt so privileged to do so and give back in a small way to a veteran who had sacrificed so much for our great country! We believe it is our company’s obligation to continue to seek ways to give back to our community.

A RETIRED couple came to my office recently to talk about their investments. In the course of our conversation, the husband wondered aloud how he could have lost a third of his portfolio in 2008 when he had invested in mutual funds, rather than individual stocks. Didn’t he have his money well diversified? On the surface, it seems so. But after we talked further, I found that he had inadvertently invested in mutual funds that held one kind of investment – large cap stocks – and that particular asset class had suffered a 37% decline that year. He had mistakenly put all his investment eggs in one basket. True investment diversification spreads your money across many asset classes – large cap stocks, small cap stocks, mid cap, growth, value, US, international, real estate, less-risky bonds and fixed income, cash… well, you get the idea. Each asset class performs differently under changing market conditions. The trick is to find the right mix that suits you and your unique risk profile. The first step is to assess your risk personality – in our office, we use a questionnaire to assess your true tolerance for risk – to find out how well you can financially and emotionally withstand a market downturn. You will also want to consider your guaranteed income sources and amount of debt. Then, build a diversified portfolio that reflects your comfort zone. Why is this so very important? If you get that mix right, you’ll stay in the market through its inevitable ups and downs. If you get that mix wrong, you’ll flee to safety as so many investors did in 2008, who then missed the upswing in 2009. The ability to stay invested in the market over the longterm is an important key to building wealth. If you would like to determine your risk personality and analyze your current portfolio’s diversification and how well it matches your risk profile, call our office for a complimentary appointment. If you would like to learn more about the importance of asset allocation, join us on April 29th from 11:30 to 12:30 for our free Lunch ‘n Learn at Lakeside Tavern. Steve Lukather Discusses TOTO XIV

I

F YOU’RE a music aficionado at all,

you’ve heard of TOTO and are familiar with their mega huge hits like “Africa,” Rosanna,” “99,” “I Won’t Hold You Back,” “I’ll Be Over You,” and many others. What you may not be aware of are these absolutely amazing statistics: » They have recently celebrated their 35th anniversary as a band

Birmingham, Alabama, while he was on the road performing with Ringo Starr (yes, THE Ringo Starr). About TOTO XIV, he said: “I never thought we’d do another record, actually. When we got back together in 2010, it was to help our brother, Mike Porcaro, with some of his medical bills. He’s been tragically hit with ALS, and sadly, he’s really not doing

» Have sold more than 35 million albums » Band members were South Park characters, while Family Guy did an entire episode on the band’s hit “Africa” » Collectively, the members of the band made their mark on more than 5,000 different albums that total a half billion units in record sales » It’s been estimated that 95% of the world’s population has heard a performance by a band member of TOTO Steve “Luke” Lukather accounts for much of the previously mentioned statistics. He’s contributed to approximately 2,000 albums for artists such as Michael Jackson (including much of the “Thriller” album), Rod Stewart, Miles Davis, Alice Cooper, Cheap Trick, Roger Waters, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Larry Carlton, and countless others. As if that’s enough, the band is releasing their first studio album of new material in 10 years entitled TOTO XIV. I recently chatted with founding member, guitarist, and vocalist, Steve Lukather, about the album. I contacted him at his hotel room in

well right now. It’s eight years into it, and it’s a tragic, horrible, insidious, cruel disease. That was hard. (Note: Sadly, Mike succumbed to ALS on March 15th.) “When we decided to do the 35th anniversary DVD, we found out that one of our ex-managers had signed something saying that if we ever do anything, we have to deliver a studio album. At first, we sort of fought that, but our lawyers said, ‘Look, you should make the record.’ “So we all looked at each other and said, ‘If we’re going to do this, we gotta do a really good one. We can’t just phone it in and make this a fulfillment of an obligation.’ “We figured we owed it to the people who have been supporting us for 40 years, so we need to come up with something really good. It’s been 10 years since we sat down

16

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE April 2015

to write a record, so we dug deep. We decided that if we were going to do this, we were going to go for it, really go for it. We wanted to dispel the myth that the album is dead, and old guys can’t write music. We said, ‘We’re gonna go for it.’ “The world is looking at us differently. The band is playing better than they ever have, so we are sort of a surprise wild card at this point. There are a lot of great bands out there making the circuit, but it’s the same eight guys in various configurations. We kinda came out of nowhere last year in the U.S.” Then, as a little tease, Luke said, “There’s a big surprise, which I can’t tell you about yet. I’d like to, but I can’t. We’re going to be touring with somebody really cool, and it’s not anybody obvious at all. The U.S. tour starts in August/September, but we’re doing two months in Europe. Everyone is super healthy and focused, and we’re going to prove everybody wrong about the idea that these old guys have nothing new to give. I don’t believe in that, you know?” What surprises on the album can TOTO fans expect? “We’ve got a couple hundred songs we can grab to play outside of hits with all these records we’ve made,” said Luke. “David Hungate’s back. Lenny Castro’s back on the road with us along with Steve, me, Dave, and Joe. We’ve got a killer band to bring on the road, and we’re going to perform this new stuff. We’re going to play a lot of the old stuff we haven’t been able to play. It’s just a really exciting time for us.” As our chat wrapped up, I asked Luke to summarize his life. “I’ve been given a great gift, and I’m very, very grateful for it – probably more so now than I’ve ever been. Thank you for life. It’s like that movie, Defending Your Life, where you have to sit and watch all the rough spots. I hope God has a great sense of humor.” The expanded version of this interview can be found at www.Boomerocity.com. Photo credit: Heather Porcaro

Taking Taxes Into Shred Your Old Tax Mistakes... Account Year-Round HOW MANY of us invest

Ali Swofford,

with an eye on tax implica- PhD tions? Not many. In 2014, Russell Investments polled financial services professionals to learn how many of their clients had inquired about tax-sensitive investment strategies. 35% reported clients wanting information, and only 18% said clients proactively discussed the matter.1 Good financial professionals aren’t shy about bringing this up. Many advisors make tax-managed investments available to their clients.1 When is the ideal time to address tax matters? Year-end can prompt many investors to think about tax issues. The problem is that your time frame is short in December. You can’t always pull off year-end charitable donations, gifts of appreciated securities, or extra retirement plan contribution. It’s better to think about these things year-round. Addressing tax implications year-round may save you some money. Think about taxes as you contribute to your retirement accounts. Contributing to a qualified retirement plan can lower your taxable income. In 2015, you can contribute up to $18,000 to a 401(k) or 403(b). If you’re 50 or older, you can put in up to $24,000 into these accounts. This can reduce your taxable income and lower your tax bill.2,3 What capital gains tax rate will you face? The long-term capital gains tax rate is 20% for high earners and can be greater in some cases. If you sell depreciated real property, part of your gain will be taxed at 25%. If you owned qualified small business stock for more than five years, you typically can exclude 50% of any gains from income, but the other 50% will be taxed at 28%. If you sell an asset you’ve held for less than a year, the realized gains will be taxed as regular income, which could be as high as 39.6%.2,4 A tax-sensitive investing approach is always specific to the individual. Therefore, any strategy needs to start with an in-depth discussion with your tax or financial professional. Call me at 865-690-0049, and I can help you stay aware of the tax ramifications of certain financial moves.

Allergies of

Spring A

S WE WELCOME

the warmer weather of spring and all its glory, millions of Americans prepare themselves for pollen and the allergies that come with it. Thirty-four percent of Americans will develop some form of allergies, a significantly higher rate than the rest of the world, which averages about twenty percent. Allergies have become so common that we seem to just accept them as a fact of life and try to manage the symptoms as best we can. But if we understood their cause, we just might be able to prevent them or even reverse them. If someone sticks a dandelion in your nose, you will sneeze. That is a perfectly normal body reaction. But if you’re still sneezing 24 hours later, that’s an over-reaction, and that’s an allergy. It is an exaggerated immune response to a stimulus. There are two aspects to the immune system. One is the innate aspect, which we are born with, and the other is the acquired aspect, which is developed over time. Allergies are a natural response to the immune system that has been altered in some way. Gluten allergies are an excellent example of this. Because of a leaky gut that results in inflammation due to poor diets and stress, harmful food particles are allowed to pass into the bloodstream and reap havoc on our immune system. There are many identifiable foods

that are prone to create allergies. Besides gluten, the more familiar ones are nuts, dairy, flours, wheat, and soy products. Symptoms can vary with allergies from sneezing, runny nose, GI problems, tingling, and swelling of the lips and tongue to fatigue, headaches, and congestion. Also, as in the case with gluten, inflammation may ensue, which perpetuates autoimmune problems. Exposure to minute amounts of potential allergens, especially at a young age, can assist with creating a strong immune system. Local honey has been thought to be an excellent mechanism for this, as bees gather pollen from local plants and therefore provide in one source hundreds of immune building stimulants. If you have already reached adulthood and are saddled with allergies, there are still steps you can take to minimize the resulting discomfort. First, strengthen the immune system by giving it proper nourishment with a good balance of complex carbohydrates, vegetables, and good quality proteins and fats. For total well-being, it is best to avoid foods such as dairy and flour products that produce mucus and can result in allergy symptoms such as congestion, feeling groggy, and fatigue. So this spring, why not try a healthier lifestyle, shed a few pounds, and turn up the energy? You just may find your allergies have been shed, too.

Couch Potato Dog

WELCOME SPRING! After some harsh

winter weather, everyone is ready for fun in the sun. Playing in the snow was fun, but due to the chilly temperatures, exercise was lacking. Many dogs, along with us owners, put on a few extra pounds. Being overweight is unhealthy for dogs. It can lead to increased risk for diabetes, pancreatitis, hypothyroidism, joint disease, osteoarthritis, intervertebral disease, compromised heart function, kidney problems, and, finally, reduced quality and length of life. It’s up to the dog’s parents to assure that their four-legged kids are not overweight. Ask yourself, “When feeding the dog, has it become a time of bonding, an act of love? Is this leading to overfeeding?” We know counting calorie intake is important. Are you Winner in the counting your dog’s calorie intake? Read Boarding Category & A Favorite (3rd) ingredients on your for Grooming dog food label. Is it

high in fat and sugar? Treats have calories, too. Also, food dropped from the table adds calories in a hurry. Create a “Doggy Food Allowance” box to help you keep track of your dog’s caloric intake, including treats. This box will help you to distribute food in small portions throughout the day. When the dog box is empty, no more food, and no more treats! And NO food from the table, please. Exercise is the second major component in weight management. For overweight dogs that haven’t been active, start with several fiveminute walks, working up to a few 20 minute walks per day. If your dog is not getting the needed exercise at home, consider arranging daycare a couple times a week. Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits offers active daycare Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm. Spring is a great time to start a health conscious regimen for your dog and their parents.

Spring’s Super Separates

I

F YOU’VE been shopping for

a dress for the past few seasons, you’ve probably discovered that there aren’t many dresses in the market to purchase. But why stress for a dress? You can get the same look in this year’s strong separates! Lifestyles now are much more relaxed, very rarely calling for a dressy look that cannot be found by combining a beautiful, flowy palazzo pant with a gorgeous blouse. Even weddings, which at one time called for a dress, are attended now more in dressy pants or skirts, many times combined with a jacket to give a completed and quite formal look. Our models pictured are all wearing separates, enabling them to separate these pieces and combine them with other items in their wardrobe as well; thus, wardrobe building at its best! Most any top can be mixed with denim, so use your jackets, blouses, and tunics to extend your casual wardrobe. Not the least important reason to choose separates instead of a dress is the fit. Larger top? Larger bottom? Separates will work perfectly for you!

Most women are not perfectly shaped, so it becomes almost impossible to find a dress style that fits the entire body perfectly. Look closely at our models, who are all wearing this season’s separates. Think of the many ways you can incorporate these pieces into your existing wardrobe… and remember, we’re always happy to have you bring pieces you already own into the store to freshen your look for a new season!

Arrowmont Announces “A Naturally Picked Stacked Attraction of Glitz” ARROWMONT INVITES the public to

view “A Naturally Picked Stacked Attraction of Glitz,” the final exhibition from current Arrowmont Artists-in-Residence. The exhibition is on display in the Sandra J. Blain Gallery through May 9. The exhibit showcases sculpture, video art, installations, and interactive work made by Artist-in-Residence F.E. Toan, Amy Masters, Hunter Creel, Matthew Dercole, and Nicholas Stawinski. The opening reception is Friday, April 10, from 7-9 pm and is free and open to the public. The community is encouraged to attend with their friends and family. This cumulative exhibition features the work made during the artists’ 11-month residency at Arrowmont and will include wall-scaling squirrels, 200 candleholders creating an illuminated labyrinth, some bulbous funk, and the world’s largest rag rug. The Arrowmont Artists-in-Residence Program was established in 1991. The program provides early career, self-directed artists time, space, and support to experiment and develop a new body of work in a creative supportive community environment. Matthew Dercole received his MFA in ceramics with minors in metalsmithing and

drawing from the University of Iowa. Dercole has participated in previous artist residencies at the Lux Center for the Arts and at Lillstreet Art Center. Dercole’s emotional and sometimes disturbing sculptures incorporate illustrational and narrative qualities, reflecting the viewers’ own psychological complexities. A my Ma ster’s tactile work utilizes fiber-based sculpture, installation, and performance to investigate memory and storytelling. Her “rugs” at once become zoomorphic, biological, and nostalgic. Masters received her MFA in Fibers from Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University and has also completed residencies at the Wassaic Art Project and at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center. Hunter Creel received his BFA in metalsmithing from Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville in 2012 and has also completed at residency at Craft Alliance in St. Louis, MO. Creel creates futuristic hollow-ware forms, which become individual characters, suggesting personality and disposition through subtle gestures. Nicholas Stawinski is an artist, furniture designer, and fourth-generation upholsterer.

He earned his MFA from the University of Wisconson-Madison in 2014 and was featured in the July 2012 issue of American Craft magazine. His totemic, upholstered forms pay homage to his family’s trade, as well as contort in unfamiliar and playful ways, subverting their traditional function. F.E. Toan works with fiber and traditional metalsmithing techniques to create seductive structures and systems that both restrict and facilitate touch. Toan received his BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2012 and helped found and manage the Mule Barn Craft Studio in Richmond, VA. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday 9 am to 5 pm and Saturday 10 am to 4 pm. For more information, interested parties can contact Kelly Hider, Gallery Manager, at 865436-5860 ext. 22 or khider@arrowmont.org. Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts is a national art education center. The school enriches lives by developing aesthetic appreciation and fostering self-expression with hands-on experiences in a variety of media, classes, conferences, and seminars. Massage is widely known to provide these additional benefits: » Lower blood pressure » Increase blood circulation and lymph flow » Relax tight muscles » Alleviate discomfort during pregnancy » Promote deeper and easier breathing » Relieve tension-related headache » Enhance the health and nourishment of the skin » Relieve mental stress » Reduce levels of the stress hormone Cortisol Spa 9700 offers private, quiet treatment rooms where your modesty is always maintained. This Atlanta-based company was started in 1996 with their main line of clothing being produced in India. An additional line of fall/winter capes are produced in France and Italy. There are full-time designers at each manufacturing facility, and the Singh brothers are very hands-on with their designs, visiting each location twice a year to make the final decision on each season’s designs. Their innovative lines are offered in sizes small to 3X. It was apparent on my first visit that this was a business dedicated to quality, great design, and unsurpassed customer service. They had the same aspects for me (their customer) that I wanted for my customer. I am proud to introduce this exciting line each year with the assurance that my customers are offered a quality garment. Our customers will not be disappointed with this spring’s choices from Parsley & Sage. The colors are bright and cheerful, and they have introduced some new looks into some of their designs. New designs arrive in our store every two weeks, so there is always something new to see when you visit. In addition to Parsley & Sage, we have introduced several new fashion lines this spring that have been strongly received by customers and are selling out fast. So come visit Veronica G Boutique soon! Next month we will share the interesting story behind our first 100% sustainable clothing line. This comfortable casual wear is already creating quite the “buzz.” Come in soon, and enjoy the beautiful colors of spring at Veronica G Boutique.

UT Institute of Agriculture Names New Leader of Tennessee 4-H/ALEC Richard Clark leads new combined unit A LIFE-LONG educator, Richard

Clark, is dedicating his career to giving young people in Tennessee every opportunity to grow and succeed. It starts as early as the fourth grade and continues through the college years. Clark recently started work at the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture as the new leader of Tennessee 4-H, the youth development program for UT Extension and Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication (ALEC), a department in the Institute’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. These two units – service-oriented and academic – have been merged in an effort to better serve Tennessee youth. “I’ve been involved in 4-H and ag education in some capacity for almost my entire career,” says Clark. “The new department of 4-H and ALEC has the opportunity to serve as a model for other universities for impacting the lives of young people from elementary school through college. 4-H and ALEC have a common, underlying youth development and Photo by R. education knowledge base which makes this merger ideal.” Clark’s main responsibilities will be providing leadership to the state 4-H staff in Knoxville and county 4-H agents all across the state. He will also serve in an academic capacity, developing curriculum for faculty and students here at UTIA. “My first goal is to inspire students of all ages to reach for their dreams and empower them with the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in life,” says Clark. “The second goal is for the department to become a national leader in scholarship related to youth development in both non-formal and formal education. We will continue to engage in cutting-edge research and showcase innovation in university teaching and in outreach through 4-H.” “Dr. Clark brings a diverse background and experiences that make him an ideal leader for our new 4-H/ALEC Department,” says UTIA Chancellor Larry Arrington. “This newly created department pulls together all of our faculty and staff working in the areas

of youth development and leadership. This will allow UTIA to better serve the state of Tennessee, including 4-H and FFA programs throughout the state.” Clark comes to UTIA from the University of Illinois College of Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences, where he served as Associate Director of Agricultural Education from 2009 to this year. He also led the Illinois 4-H program during that time as Interim Director. In his career, Clark also led the 4-H program in New Jersey for Rutgers University and had administrative appointments at Ohio State, Penn State, and Virginia Tech. He holds his doctorate from Ohio State and also has degrees from Virginia Tech. He is a native of Danville, Virginia, and very early in his career, worked at the county level in 4-H in that state. The UT Institute of Agriculture provides instruction, research, and outreach through the UT College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, the UT College of Veterinary Medicine, UT AgResearch, including its system of 10 research and education centers, and UT Extension offices in every county in the state. Ninth Annual Breakthrough Run Supports Programs for Adults with Autism

O

RGANIZERS OF the ninth

annual Breakthrough 5K Run/ Walk for Autism on April 18 invite youths and adults who have disabilities to join in the race. Those with autism and any other disabilities are invited to join more than 400 runners and walkers in the 5K run and walk and one-mile Fun Walk that supports the not-for-profit Breakthrough of Knoxville, which provides a range of services to help adults with autism to live as independently as possible. The Breakthrough Run/Walk for Autism begins at 8 am on Saturday, April 18, at the Regal Cinemas Pinnacle Stadium 18 at Turkey Creek in Farragut. The run, on a USATF-certified course, will have chip timing for the 5K. More than 40 children and adults with autism and other disabilities participate in the race each year, among the opportunities Breakthrough provides for those with autism to be involved in their community. These participants will receive special attention as “Breakthrough Buddies” during and after the race, and they may request that a volunteer accompany them on their run or walk. Teams are also invited to participate in the run. Lori Tucker, co-anchor at WATE-TV, is honorary chair of the Breakthrough Run. Race directors are Judi Brookshire and Susan Lee, who each are parents of young adults with autism. They joined other parents in forming Breakthrough to improve the way services are provided to adults with autism in East Tennessee. According to Judi, Breakthrough provides individualized services that offer quality care, a safe environment, family connection, and community involvement. Breakthrough has seven homes for adults with autism in its South 32

The run takes place during Autism Awareness Month in April, focusing attention on the needs of those with autism, a lifelong disorder of the brain that has no known cause or cure. The Centers for Disease Control describes autism spectrum disorder as a developmental disability that can cause significant social, communication, and behavioral challenges. “The CDC has reported that the prevalence of autism spectrum disorders has risen to one in 68 births from the 2008 estimate of one in 88, and one in 42 for boys, nearly five times higher than the one in 189 for girls,” said Judi. “We believe that the Greater Knoxville area has more than 2,000 people with autism, and an estimated 1.5 million Americans have some form of autism.” Breakthrough was the first such

organization in Tennessee to provide services specifically for adults with autism. Besides residential services, Breakthrough offers in-home support, a Saturday therapeutic recreation program, day activities focusing on lifelong education, job skill development, and community integration. Additional homes and apartments for supported living are located throughout the Greater Knoxville area. Breakthrough also hosts a social group for adults with Asperger’s Syndrome. Judi’s son, Luke, participates in the race each year as a leader of the Fun Walk. Susan’s son, John Ryan, also participates by designing and making the “Robotz” figures that serve as race trophies each year and show up on the race t-shirts. The Breakthrough Run is part of the Spring Fling Series of two local races that includes the Run for the Deaf, on May 2, raising funds for the Tennessee School for the Deaf in Knoxville. Both races, which raise funds for worthy causes in the community, are in the Tennessee Grand Prix Series. To register for individual races or the Spring Fling races on one form online, go to “events” at www.totalracesolutions.com or to https://runnerreg.us/autism2015. any profession, not all contractors are created equal, and in the area of mold remediation, selecting an inexperienced or unqualified contractor can have negative longterm consequences to both your family’s health and your home’s building Jeremy & Ashley Akers structure. At the first sign of mold in your home, the key is to act quickly. Mold remediation costs vary greatly but can skyrocket into tens of thousands of dollars if undetected or left untreated. Should you discover mold on drywall, unfinished wood surfaces, or trim, and if the area exceeds 10 to 15 square feet, contact an experienced mold remediation contractor as soon as possible. Largely unregulated, selecting a qualified mold remediation company can be a challenging task. Unfortunately, there are a great many companies representing themselves as mold remediation specialists, although they lack the credentials, certifications, and experience. And if you believe that simply spraying bleach on the affected areas is the solution, please note that bleach can actually promote the further growth of even more mold. Professional mold remediation experts can usually remove mold in a few days or less. They will remove mold-infested materials and disinfect the affected and surrounding areas. Removal of mold-infested materials is important, as dead mold is often allergenic. As you might imagine, there are a great many variables involved in treating mold contaminated areas, and rarely are two situations identical. But, again, the single and most important decision that you as a homeowner can make is the selection of an experienced and qualified mold remediation professional. The first question to ask a mold remediation service is whether they are ACAC certified. This certification is given only to those professionals who have earned the highest standard of education in the industry. If the company you’re considering is not ACAC certified, consider another contractor. If they are in fact ACAC certified, ask that they provide proof of certification. ACAC certification is your assurance that the mold remediation company you selected has the qualifications you can depend on to safely and efficiently eliminate mold in your home and to protect your family’s health and your home. Insist on ACAC certification!

Open Up Your Home’s Outdoor Living Spaces

A

RE YOU RE ADY to let the

outdoors in? The sun is getting stronger, and the days are getting longer. Before you know it, summer will be here, and with it will come the endless ways to have fun right in your own backyard. Yet are you really enjoying your outdoor spaces to their full potential? In most parts of the country, if your outdoor space does not include retractable screen solutions, then the answer is most likely no. Here’s why. Homeowners across the country are making significant investments creating outdoor “rooms” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially made to be weather-proof. However, the hot afternoon sun and biting insects often keep homeowners from enjoying their new outdoor spaces. Retractable screens provide an answer to these problems. By combining indoor and outdoor spaces, these screen solutions enhance and promote the outdoor living experience. They provide shade and allow people to enjoy being outdoors during hot summer days, extending the time spent on patios in areas where there are lots of biting bugs that come out in the evenings. Large motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of a building, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. The best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish your views or your home’s aesthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many of the retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. Increasing in popularity are different custom color and wood grain finishes that help merge the screens with your home’s existing interior or exterior color schemes. The screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and can be connected to your general building automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection is required. For more information about all of your retractable screen options, call 865-919-1615 or visit www. tennesseescreens.com.

Is Building Right for You? NEWS PROGRAMS keep talking about the

“low inventory” in the housing market. What does low inventory mean to a buyer or seller? When the housing market first took a downturn, many buyers were reluctant to purchase a home. Slowly, the market has improved, and the predictions for the 2015 housing market are trending for continued growth. As interest rates continue to hover at historically low rates, the buyers that have remained on the fence have abandoned their fence post and committed to searching for their dream home. Christopher Thornberg, principal at Beacon Economics, said, “We expect sales and price appreciation to pick up steam this year. Existing homes sales should rise over five million, and prices will accelerate some – probably close to double digits by the end of next year.” Sounds great, right? Low rates, lots of buyers. So what’s the problem? The problem is that many of the buyers actively searching are uninspired by our current inventory. They’re waiting for the spring market to bring fresh and exciting listings. Until the spring market officially commences, there’s an unprecedented bidding war for move-in ready, accurately priced listings. Homes are selling within days, and these sellers are left in the same precarious circumstances. Where do they move when none of the houses on the market are appealing? The answer? Build. Why build? » Take advantage of historically low interest rates! » After the housing market crashed, banks were hesitant to loan for products as risky as construction loans. Buyers are surprised to learn there are many affordable options, such as land loans, construction loans using your lot as collateral for your down payment, even one-time closes. » Prices on building materials are increasing – lumber, concrete, labor – all of these increases have incremental impact on your bottom line. » If you don’t like the options available, build a home that fits your family’s needs. » The one commodity in real estate that can’t be replicated is land. There are some amazing opportunities to build in some of Knoxville’s hottest neighborhoods, but the best lots are being snatched up quickly, and we can’t make more! If you would like a no pressure, free consultation to discover if building is the right path for you, contact us today.

HE HOMETOWN boys return to the Bijou Theatre for a one night live performance that you don’t want to miss! Purchase tickets early, because last year’s show sold out fast. Special guests include Sol Cat and Johnny Astro & The Big Bang. Tickets cost $15 in advance and $17 the day of the show and can be purchased online or at the Bijou box office. The Black Cadillacs are a five-piece rock band from Tennessee with an original sound that includes influences from ‘60s era rock and roll to more modern grunge and indie rock. First cousins, Will Horton and Matthew Hyrka, formed the band in Memphis with childhood friend and bassist, Philip Anderson. With more than five years of writing, recording, and performing together, the band has carved out their place in the touring landscape. Relix Magazine named the band one of their “Summer Stars” after their 2014 European tour and appearances at several major festivals, including Bonnaroo, Hangout Fest, SXSW, Wakarusa, Summerfest, and Bunbury.

The band has just finished their new selftitled, five-song EP that features their most exciting material to date. Produced by Ken Coomer (member of Wilco and Uncle Tupelo), the EP exhibits a darker, more mature sound, with the familiar strong rhythms, thoughtful lyrics, and hard hitting guitars that earned the band their following. The new single, About You, is currently being played on the radio. The band’s music has been featured in several major network TV shows, including ABC’s Nashville, CBS’ CSI, USA’s White Collar and Unnecessary Roughness, as well as multiple feature films and documentaries. Here’s an All Dry Roofing tip for April: Did you know that your home’s roof is its first line of defense against the searing sun, rain, wind, hail, ice, and snow, and it’s exposed to more potentially damaging elements than any other area of your home’s exterior? The best way to protect your home is to keep your roof in good, sound condition and take corrective action at the first sign of a problem, before it becomes an even bigger problem that might damage your home’s interior. As owner of All Dry Roofing, I personally meet with every homeowner. I conduct a thorough evaluation of your home’s roof, including roof structure, existing roof materials, flashings, gutters, vent pipes, loose or rusting fasteners, and examine your roof from your home’s attic for signs of leaks before making any recommendations. Every roof we install is not only backed up by our guarantee, but all work is performed in a manner to ensure that the roofing manufacturer’s warranty isn’t voided by failure to adhere to required specifications. We further protect your home by using ice and water barriers and lifetime warrantied roof vent boots at no additional charge. We also offer convenient financing. Quality materials and workmanship at affordable prices – that’s the All Dry Roofing difference.

Homes for Gently Loved Furniture, Art, and Home Décor

I

’M OFTEN asked where

our gently used furniture, art , and home décor items on sale at Consign To Design come from. I answer “from homes just like yours” – homes from Sequoyah Hills to Farragut and lake and golf front communities from Tellico Village and Rarity Bay. But did you ever wonder where this same furniture, art, and home décor find a new home? The answer shouldn’t surprise you – often from the very same communities that they come from. Discriminating shoppers want two things: quality and value. So when empty nesters downsize or another family relocates, quality furniture from the nation’s top brand name manufacturers look for new homes, and at pricing as much as 80% off full retail. Just recently we helped furnish nearly an entire lake front home in Rarity Bay with beautiful furniture

from Henredon and Hooker. This furniture, which was less than two years old, was consigned by a couple who had just completed their dream home but who then decided to relocate to the coast. All of this beautiful furniture was purchased by the new buyers for less than half of what they would have paid elsewhere. Currently I am working with two homeowners in Rarity Bay that also purchased a lake front home, which I hope to be able to share photos with you in the very near future. With furniture, art, and home décor for every taste and budget, I invite you to discover the incredible savings that await you at Consign To Design.

Decorating with Mirrors WALL MIRRORS are simply the most ele-

gant, useful, and underappreciated decorating element in our homes. Most people use a mirror every day without considering its beauty or significance. A mirror is essentially neutral and neither traditional nor contemporary. Properly placed, a mirror will blend well with any interior. There are certain mirrors for certain spaces. In the public areas of one’s home, mirrors are about defining and decorating the interior instead of checking one’s reflection. In bedrooms, bathrooms, and closets, mirrors are a practical necessity. In a foyer, mirrors are useful for checking hair and makeup before leaving. Mirrors also have visual appeal. When deciding between hanging a mirror or a piece of wall art, choose the one that is most visually appealing. In some cases, a mirror just works better. With a beautiful frame, a mirror can be considered a piece of wall art. Furniture companies and interior designers are trending towards utilizing mirrors to fill wall space. Mirrors with decorative frames are affordable, look great, function as wall art, and will most likely last longer than most furniture pieces. Helpful suggestions: » When hanging a mirror, consider the height. Which is critical for getting the best reflection? For example, when positioning a mirror above a mantle, it may be too high to see yourself or the room in the reflection. If it’s too high or tall, the reflection may be of the ceiling. Mirrors with wider frames and beveled edges work very well at higher levels, especially when the reflection is not as important. » Mirrors work best for making ourselves more beautiful or attractive and reflecting light, so try placing one near a window or lamp. » Check what will be reflected in the mirror by positioning yourself where it’s going to be placed, looking at the opposite view towards the room to determine what will be reflected. » Use a wall hanger or wall cleat to hang a mirror rather than a wire stretched across the back. The hanger will help keep it flat to the wall. Remember, mirrors are simply the most elegant, useful, and underappreciated decorating element. If you follow these recommendations, you will add beauty and significance into your home’s interior décor. If you would like more information about mirror products, design, or need assistance, call Creative Reflections Inc. at 865-392-1515 or visit www.mirrorglassdesign.com.

Local Room Makeovers Part of International Design Competition Public invited to judge online

I

NTERIOR DESIGNER Sandy

Kozar, Owner of Decorating Den Interiors of Knoxville, and Taryn Stait, Interior Designer, have seven room makeovers that were selected for inclusion for an online judging by people throughout the U.S. and Canada as part of an International Dream Room competition. Sandy’s design of a family room was the People’s Choice first-place winner of last year’s competition. “If you enjoy looking through interior design magazines, this is for you,” said Sandy. “You can be part of the online judging. Last year we had more than 25,000 votes from around the world.” Visit www.drvoting.decoratingden.com to vote. Voting is open until April 11. There are before and after photos with brief descriptions of each makeover. The categories are bathrooms, bedrooms, children’s rooms, commercial, dining rooms, family rooms, home offices, kitchens, living rooms, window treatments, outdoor spaces, and miscellaneous. Visitors to the site can vote in any or all of the categories. “The rooms we designed are in the living room, family room, bathroom, and window treatment categories,” said Sandy. Below are the rooms that were submitted using clients’ homes Sandy and Taryn designed in the Greater Knoxville area:

A converted loft apartment family room uses black and white zig-zag fabric chairs with pops of red. The room also includes beautiful window treatments in a geometric velvet on linen fabric with a red banding. A multi-purpose family room with the focal point being the fireplace with a bright painting, a soft black and taupe area rug, and 46

interestingly patterned red pillows. The coffee table/two seat ottoman combination adds to the function of the room.

A lake view condo conversion. This family room lacked personality but was created to reflect the homeowner’s personality. Using bold patterned floral chairs, complemented by a black leather sleeper chair and an ottoman added flair to the room. The taupe and black abstract floral area rug, java colored, sofa and creative window treatments bring the room to life.

A client with a love for Downton Abbey commissioned this living room with the focal point of a mirrored, eclectic framed drawer front chest, soft patterned fabric, and a classical area rug, all done in soft blues and whites.

Glamourous, with sparkling faux finished walls, crystal bath light, silver shimmer vanity with a black granite top, multi-colored floral fabric hangs as the shower curtain from a custom made ceiling rod and chains. Artwork featuring shoes gives a whimsical touch to this elegant bathroom makeover. Two stories of WOW! From the metallic, embroidered, and bling wallpaper centered above the fireplace to the e l e ga nt l y h u n g shimmery silver fabric, this window treatment hangs from a square rod and rings. Metallic, specialty shaped, remote shades highlight the design and provide function for the windows.

Velvet on linen pattern with red banding gives this window treatment a stunning look and complements the design of this loft apartment. “These are real rooms for real people with real budgets,” said Sandy. “This is a great opportunity for people to get some inspiration and ideas for a decorating project they’ve been considering for their own home. The three rooms with the highest number of votes will get People’s Choice Awards at our company’s national conference to be held in Jacksonville, FL in May. You’ll see some of these rooms in national magazines in the months ahead.” Let Decorating Den Interiors help you design your next “dream room!” Call them today for a complimentary consultation.

What Builds Character in a Home? CHANCES ARE you’d answer that ques-

tion by rattling off characteristics like hardwood floors, deep baseboards, and cheerful front porches, but those are just a small part of the total equation. They can’t imbue a house with character any more than Prada shoes can make a boorish person elegant. “Character is more of an overall feeling produced by a house – a combination of emotional and physiological responses to the surroundings,” said designer/builder Jenny Blalock. In short, it’s what makes a house feel like home. “We know what home feels like, but we don’t always know why, because most people can’t define the source of that feeling,” said Jenny. “They don’t know what to ask for when they’re designing a new home or renovating an existing one, and too often they’re disappointed with the results. In actuality, our response to a house is triggered by the way its designer shaped space, light, and order. We respond positively to certain features, such as spaces that are sheltered and repeated elements like shapes or colors, because our brains are wired to do so.” The designers of many older homes incorporated those elements into their designs, which is why we tend to think of older homes as having character. Nevertheless, Jenny doesn’t equate character with just age or style. Rather, she assists homeowners to incorporate and blend these characteristics into their own unique designs in order to create the feelings of comfort and belonging for their family members and guests. “Unfortunately, many newer homes miss that mark,” said Jenny. “They just don’t have any soul to them.” Homes became houses and started to lose their uniqueness and character when mass production reached the housing industry. Time became money, so easy-to-build rectangles and squares became the norm. Gone were elements like hand-crafted doors and cabinetry, generous use of windows, and interesting nooks. Jenny believes that natural materials like reclaimed wood and stone give a house an authenticity that look-alikes can’t match.

“They have their own life, and you sense them,” she said. “They can transform the ordinary into extraordinary.” Jenny’s specialty is helping you make your dream home a reality. “Every custom built home should be a reflection of the unique needs of the family that will live there,” she said. “As families grow, they care more about function than form. They want a home that meets their needs and lifestyle.” Jenny is there with you during each step of the process to help you refine your options that meet both your budget and your individual needs. “Your home is an investment in your future and your family’s lifestyle, so you want it to meet your

April in the Garden 2 015 H A S certainly

started out with a bang! Ice, snow, and flooding rains have been punctuated with the occasional warm, sunny day just so that we don’t lose all hope. I am beginning to see signs of spring, however. My daffodils are blooming even when they have snow on them, and the trees are starting to show a hint of green. Spring is coming, hallelujah! While we anxiously await its arrival, there are many things we can do to occupy our time. Here is your list for this month: ›› If you haven’t cleaned up your beds, that is where you need to start. Remove dead plants, leaves, weeds, and debris. Then walk around and see what is going on in your yard. ›› Get your flower and veggie beds ready for planting by adding manure, peat, compost, or topsoil. ›› Repeat after me: average last frost

is April 19. Don’t get in a rush to get warm season annuals and vegetables in the ground! If you are desperate to plant something, you can plant cool season veggies such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, and greens. You can sow seeds for early peas and carrots in the ground and start seeds indoors for tomatoes, peppers, and basil. You can also plant potatoes now. ›› This is a great time to plant trees and shrubs. The ground is moist and starting to warm up, and plants have time to establish a good root system before it gets hot. The exceptions are crape myrtles and grasses, which prefer a warmer soil. ›› Pansies planted now will carry your containers and beds through until the end of May. You can also plant primroses for a little pop of color. ›› Green onions, chickweed, and henbit are sprouting like, well, weeds! If you are planning to use a weed killer

like Roundup, read the directions. Most have a minimum temperature requirement. It is also best to wait for a day that the wind isn’t blowing. Preen or another pre-emergent herbicide applied now will keep the weed population down in the upcoming months. If you want to go about your weeding the old-fashioned way, ball weeders and hula hoes will make it easier. ›› Speaking of Preen, please do not apply it or any other pre-emergent to lawns or beds in which you are going to sow seeds! These products do not distinguish between good seeds and bad and will prevent all from sprouting. ›› Pruning can be done on spring blooming plants that have finished blooming. You can also remove damaged branches and do minor shaping on some things, but please call if you have questions. It is better to be safe than sorry! ›› Organic fertilizers such as Hollytone can be applied now. They break down slowly and will not cause sudden spurts of growth. If you are using non-organics, wait until later in the month, because they cause a faster response, and we are not out of frost danger. ›› I am crossing my fingers that the harsh winter weather will cut down on the insect population, but start watching for problem insects now. Remember, however, that not all insects are bad. Some of them actually prey on the ones you want rid of, so be careful how and what you spray. In general, use the least toxic product first, spray at dusk, and use systemic products if the organics don’t fix your problem. ›› Begin watching for signs of fungus, such as spots or rusty looking patches. The damp weather is not doing us any favors in this area! ›› Don’t cut back the foliage of spring flowering bulbs like daffodils until after they turn yellow. They have to store up energy for next year’s blooms. It will help if you apply a fertilizer like Bulb Tone to the plant. ›› Stake tall perennials and cage peonies when they are still small. You can do it later, but it is harder after they get bushy. ›› Houseplants will appreciate a little attention this month. Clean them up, check for insects, re-pot if necessary, and fertilize. Pinching off new growth will help leggy plants fill out. ›› Birds are starting to migrate, so keep your feeders full. Birdbaths are also a welcome treat this time of year. Birds appreciate a drink and a splash while traveling. If you have questions, please give us a call or stop by. We are getting shipments in almost every day this time of year, so there is always something new to help make your garden beautiful!

It’s River Rescue Month with Ijams

F

OR THE past 25 years, Ijams has

organized a spring cleanup of the local rivers. Called “River Rescue,” the event routinely attracts more than 800 volunteers who come together at 40 shoreline sites to pick up trash – tons of unsightly debris, collected and removed. But the 26th River Rescue is about more than just a cleanup. Of course, we all want litter-free shorelines, people and wildlife alike, but this year, River Rescue is part of a larger cleanup and education effort. The Tennessee River Tour organized by Living Lands & Waters (LL&W) will kick off in Knoxville in early April. LL&W is a national non-profit organization created by Chad Pregracke, whose personal mission is to clean up America’s waterways. His crew spends nine months a year living and traveling on a barge hosting river cleanups, watershed conservation initiatives, workshops, tree plantings, and other conservation efforts across the country. This year, during April and May, LL&W will bring their

conservation barge and operations down the Tennessee River for the first time, kicking off their tour in Knoxville. TVA is the primary sponsor of the tour. So get involved! For more information about LL&W, contact Tammy Becker at 309-2360725 or email tammy@livinglandsandwaters. org. To volunteer for Ijams River Rescue, call Sarah at 865-577-4717, ext. 124.

BY HOLLY S. JONES, MANAGER OF THE KITCHEN GARDEN AT THE UT GARDENS, KNOXVILLE

UT Gardens Plant of the Month:

HARDY KIWI BERRY

W

HEN I first learned that you

could grow kiwis in Tennessee, I had a hard time believing it. Real kiwis? That you can eat? The answer is yes. Actinidia arguta, or hardy kiwi berry, is a delicious cold hardy true kiwi that can be grown in USDA plant hardiness zones 4-8. Not to be confused with the brown fuzzy kiwi (Actinidia delicosa), this vigorous woody vine produces a lovely smooth skinned small kiwi fruit about the size of a large grape. They taste like a very sweet kiwi with a thin edible skin. Higher in vitamin C than oranges, they also provide a healthy package of other immune-boosting antioxidants, fiber, and essential minerals. The vine is native to the mountainous regions of Northern Asia. In China, the fruit is often pickled in brine. Commercial production in the U.S. has been slow to develop because of its relatively short shelf life and the labor cost of hand harvesting and annual pruning. But for the home gardener who is able to provide a well-thought out space, a supporting structure, and regular maintenance, the kiwi berry is an edible jewel. Most A. arguta are dioecious, which means male and female flowers are produced on separate plants. For fruit production, you will need at least one male for every nine females. The commonly recommended spacing is 10 feet to 16 feet between plants with a maximum distance of 30 feet between pollinating pairs. Hermaphroditic varieties, such as ‘Issai’, are sold as self-pollinators, but they will yield much more reliably with a male planted nearby. Male plants tend to be less hardy than females and may require winter protection, such as burlap wrapping, until they reach maturity. Russian cultivars like ‘Anna’, ‘Tatyana’, and ‘Natasha’ are gaining popularity for their hardiness and productivity. While kiwi berries are grown successfully in areas with winter temperatures as low as 50

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE April 2015

minus 25 degrees, there can be winter complications even in our milder climate. Just like most fruiting plants, the fruit buds are more susceptible to winter injury than the leaf buds, so you may lose a crop one year but see no visible damage to the plant. When winter temperatures fluctuate drastically during a short period of time, even if the lowest temperature reached was well above the standard hardiness prediction, this stress can lead to damage and even death of many fruit crops, hardy kiwi included. Plants that are well cared for and are situated in ideal planting locations are more likely to endure climate pressure. For maximum fruit production and general plant health, plant in deep, fertile, well-drained soil with full sun exposure. To prevent fruit bud damage from late spring frosts, look for a planting site with northern exposure. This will help to ensure that the plant stays dormant until warm weather has truly come to stay. It’s important to keep them well watered, especially in the summer, but make sure the water drains freely as they will not tolerate wet feet. Raised beds and large containers (15 gallons or greater) can be used with success. It may take four to five years for the plants to produce fruit, but once they reach maturity, each plant can produce 60-100 pounds of sweet, flavorful fruit per year. The berries are harvested in mid to late October when most other fruit crops are long gone. Though I have seen these kiwis grown as a large, ranging shrub hedge, the best way to collect the fruit is to train them onto a strong trellis system or some other sturdy support. Expect to

prune a few times during the year. During the summer, thin excess shoots to increase sun exposure and trim remaining flowering shoots back to about five leaves beyond the last flower. Late winter pruning is done to remove last year’s fruiting canes and any dead or diseased wood. Abandoned or neglected plantings can grow out of control and may require pruning all the way to the ground. New growth can then be trained properly. The cultivars Tatyana and ‘Meader’ were planted in the fall of 2014 on the main arbor in the Kitchen Garden at the UT Gardens, Knoxville. Come by and check out their progress! Holly S. Jones manages the Kitchen Garden at the UT Gardens, Knoxville. The University of Tennessee Gardens located in Knoxville, Crossville, and Jackson are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public except during designated special events. For more information, visit www.utgardens.tennessee.edu. Photo by H. Jones, courtesy UTIA

The Ecosystem Within Your Tile and Grout Floors I

F YOU own a tile and grout floor, you

have probably noticed that tile cleaners and traditional cleaning methods do little to remove the soil buildup within your grout lines. Scrubbing the grout may remove surface soil, but it can’t eliminate stains or stubborn soil buildup beneath the top layer. As a result, your grout will darken over time as the increased soil load is pushed deeper and deeper within the grout. If you are unsure if your grout has darkened over time, find a spot in an unused corner and compare the shade of the grout located there with the grout in high-traffic areas. If there is a difference, your grout is likely stained and the soil embedded within is impossible to remove without the proper process. Here’s why. Grout is a natural sponge with millions of tiny holes that accumulate dirt and grime. As you clean, only the top surface layer is exposed, because it takes extreme heat to “open” the sponge-like pores, thus allowing dirt to be removed from the lower

The best way to test whether your grout needs to be resealed is to drop a few drops of water onto the grout line and see if it remains on the surface or soaks right in. If it disappears, it’s time to reseal. Also, it may be time to call in a professional. layers. Without the needed tools, your grout tends to get dirtier the more you clean it. How’s that for frustrating? So what does it take to get your tile and grout floors clean? Four separate components are needed to get down inside your floors and remove stubborn stains and buildup: heat, pressure, suction, and quality cleaning solution. Once you have had them cleaned and sanitized, a quality sealer is recommended to minimize future cleaning efforts and maximize your efforts. Home Begins in Your Garage GONE ARE the days when you had to settle for

a drab, cement-gray garage floor. Today your garage floor can be as beautiful as any other room in your home. Why consider anything beyond your standardissue concrete garage floor? » Protect concrete from the harsh chemicals and liquids that leak out of your automobile. Even the water, salt, and snow your car drags in promote deterioration and cracking. » Cleaning is easier. Untreated concrete gives off dust, but a flooring system significantly reduces dirt and dust. It prevents materials – from cars and your other garage-based activities (gardening, building, painting) – from soaking into the porous concrete. » Fill and cover-up existing cracks for looks, safety, and protection.

For a striking and durable garage floor coating that is easy to maintain, Knoxville’s PremierGarage can transform an oilstained, pitted, and peeling epoxy-coated garage floor into a showroom quality look. » Open up new activities in your garage. It could double as a children’s play area or workout space while the car is out. » Increase the resale value of your home. For a striking and durable garage floor coating that is easy to maintain, Knoxville’s PremierGarage can transform an oil-stained, pitted, and peeling epoxy-coated garage floor into a showroom quality look. PremierGarage, serving the East Tennessee area for 10 years, combines its proprietary hybrid polymer flooring system technology with their extensive industry knowledge and experience to provide a high-quality finish that is chemical, stain, and slip resistant. The two-day process starts with technicians who diamond grind each floor to the ideal surface condition to achieve a permanent chemical bond that substantially outlives traditional epoxies. Curing two times harder than epoxy, the flooring provides a continuous, non-porous coating surface that naturally resists various liquids that may leak from your automobile’s engine. It’s like armor for your concrete floor. Not only will your garage look more “finished,” but cleanup requires only a hose or mop. Available in hundreds of various chip and color combinations, you can customize your garage flooring to fit your home and style. PremierGarage’s flooring solutions are also suitable for commercial and light industrial applications. Call PremierGarage and discover the affordability of transforming your garage floor. Home really does begin in the garage!

Parkinson’s Fundraiser

Fox Den Country Club in Knoxville Saturday, April 18 • 7 pm to midnight Join us for a special evening of live music, gaming, dinner, dancing, and live and silent auctions. Tickets are $100 per person. For reservations, contact the KiMe Fund at info@kimecnd.org. The KiMe Fund is focused on finding a cure for Parkinson’s.

Most Oriental rug customers think that the first priority of Oriental rug washing is to “clean” their valuable rugs. Well, that’s only partially correct, as the first priority should be “safety.” Let me explain. Oriental rugs are far different from their wall-towall cousins. Oriental rugs are hand woven using natural fibers and organic dyes, including, believe it or not, tea and vegetable dyes. While beautiful to admire, Oriental rugs cannot be cleaned using conventional carpet cleaning methods. These cleaning systems can actually permanently damage your valuable rugs. Successful Oriental rug washing combines two important items – decades of experience and a state-of-the-art multi-step washing system, using specially treated water, that significantly reduces the potential damage to your rugs. Simply put, there is no replacement for experience and a proven washing system. We have recently completed important upgrades to our West Knoxville-based Oriental rug washing boutique, where we pamper your rugs. With twice the capacity that we had previously, you can be assured that every rug we wash using our proprietary 11-step Oriental rug washing process will be thoroughly and safely cleaned. If you have not already done so, I encourage you to visit us online at www.superiorofknoxville.com and view our informative three minute video to discover the Superior of Knoxville Oriental rug washing difference. For all of your Oriental rug washing needs and upholstery and carpet cleaning during all of your spring house cleaning projects, trust the one company that has put “superior” back into cleaning: Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning of Knoxville.

N-Hance Your Home for Spring WITH THE weather finally

cooperating, our thoughts are turning to spring. That means prioritizing a number of interior and exterior projects, many of which were postponed from last year. Perhaps you took on too many projects, or maybe they stretched your household budget beyond your comfort zone. Well, here’s some great news for you, just in time for your spring fix-up projects. If your kitchen and bathroom cabinets are worn and faded and in need of a major facelift, the professional wood renewal specialists at N-Hance can really be the solution. Instead of replacing or resurfacing your existing cabinetry, you can restore your existing cabinets to a “like new” look for far less than you might imagine – up to 80% less in fact. And if you’d like to move beyond the “traditional look,” consider experimenting with colors like off-whites, blues, and grays, which are very popular today. Also, not only can we restore that “like new” appearance to your home’s existing cabinets,

but we can also “warm up” your cabinets with a “color shift.” You might even want to consider N-Hance’s line of opaque cabinet finishes, which saturate your cabinet’s wood with a variety of rich, beautiful colors. You can also select from four different techniques: Glazed, antiqued, burnished, and vintage. Here’s something you may not know. N-Hance can use their very same patented and proprietary process that has revolutionized the cabinets’ replacement and resurfacing marketplace on your home’s wooden f looring. Why replace or re-sand your home’s hardwood floors when you can N-Hance them for savings of up to 80% off the cost of replacement? I would like to ask you to extend me an invitation to personally demonstrate just how

N-Hance can not only restore your home’s existing cabinetry and wood flooring, giving you that “new look” that you’re hoping to experience once again, but also let me demonstrate just how you can incorporate your cabinets into your home’s interior design while saving you up to 80% from the alternative solutions you may be considering. One more thing. Why not use the savings that N-Hance offers to complete those other projects on your springtime “to-do” list?

more active with the warmer weather! Here’s why you need the pest professionals at Dayton’s. Carpenter Bees: Resembling bumble bees, the round holes carpenter bees make in exterior wood look like they have been made with a drill. Simply plugging the holes won’t get rid of them, for they will just drill new holes somewhere else. Favorite places include wood decks or porches, roof eaves, trim, railings, siding, outdoor furniture, and fences. Ants: The key to successful ant control is to treat the source of the ants, and the largest part of an ant colony is underground. Just spraying where you see them is not effective, for they will still keep coming back from the outside. Termites: Hiding in out-of-the-way places, such as behind walls and underneath flooring, termites can cause tremendous structural damage that you can’t readily see. Dayton’s termite inspections are FREE, and their professionals have expertise in spotting signs of a potential termite problem. An added convenience for real estate sales is that Dayton Hylton is a licensed realtor and can access a lockbox without anyone having to be home for a termite inspection. Ladybugs/Stink Bugs/Box Elder Bugs/ Kudzu Bugs/Paper Wasps: After hibernating in your home for winter, they will now be emerging in large numbers to annoy you! New customers will receive $25 OFF an initial pest control treatment with an annual contract and $150 OFF Termidor® H•E termite treatment. Other services provided by Dayton’s include radon testing and mitigation, CleanSpace® Crawl Space Encapsulation, monthly/quarterly/one-time pest control services, pest control for bed bugs/rodents/ wasps/bees, fungicide/moldicide treatments, and VA/FHA termite inspections. Lloyd Branson

An Artist and His Home

N O C H L L OY D BRANSON (1853–1925) was

born on a farm in nearby Union County to a prosperous, hardworking family. Folks there could tell from an early age that the young man had a special artistic talent. To paint, he made his own brushes out of wood and animal hair and used berries, herbs, and charcoal for pigments. When not painting, the young Branson was handy with a knife and became known for his woodcarvings. It was a woodcarving that really launched his career as a professional artist. In December 1865, Lloyd Branson watched as General Ulysses S. Grant marched through Gay Street in downtown Knoxville as part of a victory tour organized by President Andrew Johnson. He was inspired to carve the General’s likeness on a wooden cigar box. One day, prominent Knoxville doctor John Boyd was making rounds in Union County and noticed the box. He set out to find the boy artist and immediately became his mentor. Dr. Boyd arranged for Lloyd to begin working with Flavius James Fisher, a popular portrait painter who had a studio on Gay Street. Under Fisher’s tutelage, Branson’s skills grew dramatically along with his popularity as an artist. While best known for his portraits of Southern politicians and depictions of early East Tennessee history, Branson’s landscape paintings are a testament to the natural beauty found in rural East Tennessee. One of the most influential figures in Knoxville’s early art circles, Mr. Branson was a mentor to fellow artist Catherine Wiley and is credited with discovering twentieth-century portraitist Beauford Delaney. He organized the Knoxville Sketch Club, which often met in the home studio of artist Adelia Lutz. In 1875, Branson won first prize during a show at the Antique School of the National Academy of Design. Later he partnered with Franklin McCrary, a popular Knoxville photographer, and together they created an “artistic showplace” at their Gay Street headquarters. In 1905, Branson purchased 15 acres of subdivided land just off Broad Street (modern day Broadway) in Knoxville. The main street through the new development was originally

58

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE April 2015

named Rhode Island Avenue but was later changed to Branson Avenue by the City of Knoxville to recognize his cultural contributions. The artist planned and built many of the homes in the neighborhood, including his own, which was completed in 1922. Known as a man of “elegant simplicity,” the Branson home was nestled among sycamores and evergreens. The home still stands today, shaded by one of those sycamores. Sadly, the Branson house fell into disrepair throughout the years. Eventually it was declared blighted and boarded up to keep vagrants at bay. Knox Heritage recently included the house on its annual Fragile Fifteen list of endangered historic places. In January 2015, Knox Heritage was able to purchase the home through the City of Knoxville’s Homemaker program, and the non-profit preservation organization plans to transform the property into a beautiful home once again. Construction will begin this spring. Once neglected and almost forgotten,

the house that Enoch Lloyd Branson built will soon be a vibrant home again. Whoever the new owner will be, they will certainly have a lot to share with guests about the prolific artist who originally built the house on the street that now bears his name.

Each month contributors from the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance (ETPA) write an article for Everything Knoxville celebrating the rich heritage of our region. ETPA is a regional historic preservation organization that partners with Knox Heritage to serve a 16 county region. underway, a spotlight is cast on the Asheville area and its numerous 2015 connections to the silver and small screens. Playing the role of story muse, film backdrop, and celebrity playground, Western North Carolina offers adventures and immersive travel experiences for film and television fans. Learn the favorite hangouts of Kristen Wiig and Owen Wilson, visit Asheville’s own Downton Abbey, learn about the inspiration for a Nicholas Sparks tale, or explore the Appalachian Trail with these 2014 connections.

DOWNTON ABBEY

On the heels of Joanne Froggatt’s Golden Globe win, the popular PBS television series Downton Abbey comes to Asheville with “Dressing Downton: Changing Fashion for Changing Times,” an exhibit featuring more than 40 costumes from the show. Suitably located at Biltmore, the exhibit offers tie-ins to the lives of those who lived and worked at America’s Largest Home during the same era. Celebrate the Gilded Age: Check out a Downton-themed supper club, gourmet high tea, and Downton Abbey travel packages.

A WALK IN THE WOODS

Two of the nation’s signature hiking routes enjoy a moment in the spotlight this year with the film Wild, focusing on the Pacific Crest Trail and Sundance “delight.” A Walk in the Woods centered on the Appalachian Trail, running just north of downtown Asheville. Both films focus on the physical and emotional journeys of the main characters: Oscar nominated Reese 60

Hike with a Local Legend: The current world record holder for the fastest thru hike of the Appalachian Trail, Jennifer Pharr Davis lives in Asheville and owns Blue Ridge Hiking Co., creating custom trips for novices, adventurers, and everyone in between.

MASTERMINDS

Filmed on the streets of Asheville last summer, Masterminds is based on the famed 1997 Loomis Fargo bank robbery in Charlotte. Comedy stars Zach Galifianakis, Kristen Wiig, and Owen Wilson bring to life this $17.3 million “hillbilly heist,” the largest of its kind at the time. Those familiar with Asheville will recognize filming locations such as Pack Square, the Buncombe County Courthouse, and downtown streets.

GENIUS

Based on the book Max Perkins: Editor of Genius, the film Genius stars Colin Firth as Perkins, Jude Law as Thomas Wolfe, and Guy Pearce as F. Scott Fitzgerald. To take on the role as Asheville’s native son, Law visited last summer to walk in Wolfe’s footsteps and tour his mother’s boarding house. Follow the Footsteps of a Literary Giant: Take a tour at one of the country’s most famous literary landmarks, the Thomas Wolfe Memorial, in downtown Asheville. The childhood home to the 20th-century author was immortalized in his autobiographic tale, Look Homeward, Angel. Stay at the Omni Grove Park Inn, where F. Scott Fitzgerald spent his darkest days in Asheville.

THE LONGEST RIDE

North Carolina author, Nicholas Sparks, celebrates his 10th novel-turned-film with The Longest Ride, starring Alan Alda, Scott Eastwood, and Britt Robertson. As he did in The Notebook, Sparks again ties poignant plot points to his characters’ memories - this time a honeymoon visit to Black Mountain College in Western NC and to the lifelong art collection that followed. Visit Black Mountain College: The Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center expansion in downtown Asheville opens this spring. Also, check out the colorful and immersive (Re)HAPPENING on April 4 at the original campus of Black Mountain College.

THE WORLD MADE STRAIGHT AND SERENA

Local writer Ron Rash has two novels making a big screen debut this year. Filmed in Black Mountain, The World Made Straight stars Noah Wyle, Minka Kelly, and Haley Joel Osment and has ties to the Shelton Laurel Massacre, a bloody Civil War event in Madison County, NC. In the film Serena, a newlywed couple played by Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper operate a timber business in the 1930s. Numerous Western NC references in the novel include Biltmore and George Vanderbilt. Christine Schilleci OWNER OF K TOWN SPECIALTY

NO MATTER your size or athletic ability,

if you’re an active woman – or just enjoy wearing activewear for the comfort – K Town Specialty has something for you. The boutique carries all sorts of golf and tennis clothing for women. “K Town Specialty was created on the basis that there was a need for a larger selection of golf and tennis attire for women,” said Christine. “We are carrying quality lines with a wide selection, catering to the women that are sizes 0 through 22. Most everything in the store can be ordered for that perfect fit. “Like everyone else, we all go through our own ups and downs, and in those moments, sometimes a change comes and you redefine your path,” said Christine. “I was offered a field position in sales, but I knew I didn’t want to be traveling around. My new path was the start of K Town Specialty. Beginning this boutique has been a dream of mine for years, and a door had opened, and I stepped through it.”

Since opening the boutique, one thing Christine has really enjoyed is getting to know her customers. They don’t just talk about clothing, either. “Since opening, I have had the pleasure of meeting women from around the area, both golf and tennis and even the women who don’t play either sport but enjoy wearing the clothes because of the comfort every day,” she said. “Also, when someone walks through the door and can’t stop talking about Sarris Candies, it is like talking to a friend from back home. Sarris Candies is a delicious chocolate candy line from Western Pennsylvania that I carry at K Town Specialty, because there is no other chocolate that compares.” Although owning a business is hard work, Christine knows she’s in the right place. “Like every other new business owner, you worry what the future holds or if you did the right thing,” she said. “You have good days and not so good days. But I have been very blessed

discovering things humans have never known before, but for Karen Lloyd, it’s a reality. The assistant professor of microbiology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, has been selected as a 2015 Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow in Ocean Sciences. Her work involves studying subsea floor mud and frozen Siberian soil. “I like the thrill of discovery – knowing that in that moment, I and my students have discovered something that no one else in the world has ever known,” said Karen. “Then I like the challenge of trying to share those discoveries with others.” Karen has been at UTK since February 2012. She chose a career teaching microbiology because the variety and intellectual challenge appealed to her. “I felt like that was a career path that would leave me the most freedom for intellectual inquiry, through my research and also through 64

Karen earned her bachelor’s degree in biochemistry at Swarthmore College, then went on to earn her master’s and PhD degrees in marine sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She traveled to Denmark for her post-doc in geomicrobiology at Aarhus University. Karen’s workdays can involve any number of tasks, including writing grant proposals, analyzing data, writing scientific papers, nurturing scientific collaborations, advising students about their laboratory experiments, advising students about their class work, preparing lectures for classes, preparing lectures for scientific conferences, writing exams and in-class assessments, and performing service for the university. “I juggle a lot of balls at once, so my daily challenge is trying to make sure they all stay in the air without dropping them,” she said.

“Many Advisers Bring Success” T HIS ANCIENT proverb goes on to

state that “plans go wrong for lack of advice.” It has been a decade or more since the popular Marlboro man commercials were retired from television. The iconic Marlboro man portrayed in these commercials was a rugged individualist whose independence was viewed as courageous by many. However, in the years since, this same independence is now perceived by some as a major character flaw; an individual who placed his reliance on his own independence rather than on the advice and recommendations of trusted friends and mentors. As an entrepreneur, it is customary that the final decision on issues comes down to your choice. But it can be a huge mistake to make your decisions in the absence of the recommendations and advice of a few trusted advisers. I’m always surprised by the number of small business owners that elect to go it alone, much

like the Marlboro man. Some entrepreneurs prefer the freedom of independent decision making instead of relying in part on the advice of others. But unless you possess the wisdom of Solomon, this type of decision making seems ill advised. Seeking the advice of knowledgeable advisers on important decisions is not only critical to your success in making important

decisions, but it can also avert the consequences of poor choices. Confiding in others is not always an easy thing for free minded entrepreneurs to do, because it requires the courage necessary to place your trust in the wisdom of others. Little courage is required to act alone. But caution must also be exercised not to overthink your decision, waiting for the stars to align. I’ve often observed small business owners who seek out endless advice in order to avoid the fear that can result from making an important decision. Courage is the trademark of the successful entrepreneur, but the entrepreneurs that exhibit the greatest courage are those who are fearless in seeking the advice of trusted counselors and mentors.

Taking the Peripheral Vision Test

R

ECENTLY, AT my annual eye

exam, the optometrist tested my peripheral vision. This determines my ability to see that which is outside the direct line of vision. It’s also referred to as “side vision.” This is evident when I’m a passenger in a car. It’s impossible for me to lay off the imaginary breaks or avoid cringing when I sense the driver is following too close. It’s because my peripheral vision detects danger. What I see is determined by the panoramic view of my line of sight. How we see life determines everything. Our past, our future, and our present are all affected by the lens from which we view opportunities, thus make decisions. Therefore, we could all use a little “vision test” from time to time to determine if our peripheral vision is a help or a hindrance. PAST: We all have one. Most contain stories of heartache, hurt, and families that didn’t have it all together. While that can create present pain, it can also cripple the

future. If you are hindered by your past, get help. This is not an area to seek advice from friends. Often their well-meaning advice can be destructive. If this is a lingering issue, seek a professional therapist or pastor to seek an educated perspective. PRESENT: Each day is a gift called the present. Being able to enjoy what we have without comparing ourselves with others is a freedom like no other. Adopting an attitude of gratitude for those we care about, the homes we live in, and for food, clothing, health, and patriotic freedom. Every day is an opportunity to realize what we have while taking steps to pursue that which we want. F U T U R E : Living for the future is failure. We must be mindful not to fast forward past today into the future that has not happened yet. We all have aspirations. Most entrepreneurs have a strong sense of urgency. While those can be a driving force for action, they can also be a deceptive thief of your ability to enjoy life and the people most important. You don’t get today back.

When my son was young, he asked a brilliant question. “Do you ever wish you could rewind a day and do it over again?” That day he’d made a decision he regretted. As a result, he missed out on something he wished he hadn’t. As his mom, I could see his little mind churning a life lesson right then. Thankfully he was just a kid, and the consequences were minor. As an adult, that is often not the case. How’s your peripheral vision? Has it been tested lately? We are not a result of uncontrollable consequences or our parents’ mistakes. We are a result of our choices. One of those is how we view life. Blended, the past, present, and future are who we are. What we do with them each day determines who we can become. Family Life

BY W E N DY JAC K S O N

Why and How to Get Your Kids Exercising

D

ECAD E S AGO , screening

children for high cholesterol and high blood pressure was fairly uncommon. Today it’s not. If you haven’t heard, many of today’s children are battling the bulge. The excessive weight that many children are carrying around shouldn’t be ignored. It can lead to physical and mental health problems now – and in their future. You may be wondering why today’s children struggle with their weight more than children of previous generations. The simple fact is today’s children are more sedentary than their parents and grandparents were as children. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Kaiser Family Foundation report that the average child in America is spending between five to six hours per day taking part in sedentary media activities. When you take this into account, and then add the hours a child spends seated in a classroom and sleeping at night, it’s not surprising that children are having weight problems. We live in a technological age. Children don’t walk to their friend’s house to chat, get

up from the sofa to turn the channels on the television, or even walk around the library to find information they need for school. Most everything they want and/or need can be done or found with the click of a button. If given the choice, most children would prefer to watch television, sit in front of the computer, or play video games than do any form of exercise. According to the Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, every child over two should get one hour of exercise per day and eat a healthy, balanced diet. Get Up and Move! The solution for many weight problems in children and adults is to make exercise a part of the family lifestyle. The earlier parents can introduce physical activity to a child, the more receptive the child will be to it. The key to getting children enthused about physical activity is to allow them to choose what they want to do. If you force a child to go to a gym, do aerobics, or walk on a treadmill, they will probably rebel. Yet, these same children may love dancing, riding a

bike, skateboarding, playing soccer, or swimming. Find what your child’s interest is, and find a way to let them do it. Young children are generally not too hard to please. Look for things that will get their bodies moving such as jump ropes, kick balls, basketballs, a jungle gym, and bikes. Adolescents and teens generally prefer things such as inline skating, skateboarding, tennis, dancing, yoga, team sports, and lifting weights. Children need to see the entire family involved in physical activity. Go on picnics to places where you can take nature walks. Have a backyard dodge ball or football game. Go to your local Parks and Recreation center to swim. Walk around downtown, or simply walk the mall together. The possibilities are endless. Offering Everyone the Same Rights THIS GREAT country that you and I

are privileged to live in is a gift – a gift to be cherished, protected, and honored. As ladies and gentlemen, it is our duty to demonstrate to others through our actions and our words that we respect and honor their rights, opinions, beliefs, and the guiding principles that they live by. I know we talk about this often, but it seems to be a topic that further discussion and exploration is always needed. Most of us have come to believe certain ideas and principles to be true. We’ve reached these beliefs through our upbringing, our life experiences, and often research and study. Thank goodness we are in charge of our own brains. If you’re like me, you want to be allowed to believe what you believe and not be judged, ridiculed, or persecuted, assuming that our beliefs and actions 66

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE April 2015

do not place the safety of those around us in jeopardy. Yes, you absolutely can speak of your beliefs and try to persuade others to come to the knowledge of the truths that you believe, but you must do so only by acting in love, patience, kindness, and understanding. We all want the same rights to act upon our own beliefs, but so often we try to eliminate the rights of others through legislation and other methods, simply because we do not share their beliefs. We personally attack those who do not share our beliefs by using terms such as bigot, self righteous, judgmental, closed-minded, etc. We have a system in this great country in order to make change. We allow our voice to be heard through our vote, through contacting our representatives, by protesting and teaching and giving information, and all of these are acceptable practices

in trying to bring about change. Ladies and gentlemen, use the appropriate methods to give support to your causes and speak, speak loudly, but do so without insulting those who disagree with you. We must do all we can to protect the rights of the innocent, the rights of individual freedom, and the right for all to pursue happiness. No apology is necessary for believing the way you do, but respecting those who do not share your beliefs is required for every lady and gentleman.

Fat Reduction That Fits WITH SUMMER just around the

corner, many of us start thinking about how we are going to look in our warm weather wardrobes. Frequently, unwanted body fat taints this image. Fortunately, the science behind the removal of unwanted body fat has evolved. There are now scientifically proven, non-invasive and minimally invasive procedures to help individuals obtain their ideal body shape. If you can pinch an unwanted inch, the revolutionary Liposonix device may be just the answer to what diet and exercise alone have not been able to accomplish. Liposonix is a new device that utilizes focused ultrasound energy to non-invasively permanently destroy body fat. “1 hour, 1 treatment, 1 size smaller” is the moniker for this treatment. In controlled studies, Liposonix patients lost an average of one to two inches from their waistlines, with maximum results seen

Before SlimLipo

within eight to 12 weeks. The treatment takes approximately one hour, and there is no downtime. In fact, there are no posttreatment restrictions, and most patients can leave the office and immediately return to their normal activities. Liposonix is different from other noninvasive body contouring devices that can be limited in their ability to treat certain areas of fat and may require several hours and multiple treatment sessions to adequately address problem areas. The Liposonix system is highly versatile, allowing control over precisely how and where energy is delivered for a truly customized treatment in a single one-hour session. While Liposonix was cleared in the U.S. by the FDA in 2011, it is backed by 10 years of extensive study. It has been featured on Dr. Oz, 20/20, The View, and in many of the top beauty magazines such as Allure, Vogue, and Elle.

For those that need to lose more than an inch or two, tumescent microcannular liposuction may be the answer. This in-office, minimally invasive procedure, which utilizes only local anesthesia, was pioneered by a dermatologist in 1985 and is now considered the worldwide standard for liposuction. SmartLipo and SlimLipo are two well-known devices that have been cleared by the FDA for the destruction of fat (laser lipolysis). These devices serve as an enhancement to tumescent microcannular liposuction, promoting easier fat removal and better skin contraction. After SmartLipo or SlimLipo, most patients are able to return to work in two or three days. Virtually any area with excess fat can be treated. The neck, arms, abdomen, love handles, and thighs all respond beautifully to this procedure. Patients often ask me how much weight they are going to lose with these procedures. I try to explain that these are body contouring procedures, not weight loss procedures. It is also very important that patients maintain a healthy lifestyle after these procedures. Even though fat is permanently destroyed, if a patient gains weight, the fat must go somewhere, and it probably won’t go where you want it to.
