From the Publisher WHEN SPRING ARRIVES, I am

energized to clean and redecorate the inside and outside of my home. The longer days make working on projects more enjoyable, and East Tennessee has the best spring weather. If spring energizes you to spruce up your home, then consider contacting Sandy Kozar, owner of Decorating Den Interiors and our feature business this month. Sandy and her team can give your home a spring facelift, and for more decorating ideas, check out the Knoxville Symphony League’s Show House event taking place this month. Living in more of a country setting with a variety of wildlife is what I especially enjoy. On our walks through the neighborhood, we can enjoy deer, red fox, ground hogs,

and other small country critters. But since the beginning of the year, we have had the opportunity to observe a pair of nesting eagles just across the lake from us. We’ve focused on their nest in the hopes of seeing the young eagles, although they are not quite ready to leave the nest. Besides the wildlife to enjoy, spring in East Tennessee bursts with color as the flowering shrubs and trees come to life. In Knoxville, we celebrate the dogwoods with a month-long festival having the dogwoods as the focus of this art, music, and craft event. So get out and enjoy the beautiful spring weather, the blooms, and all the great events we have in the Knoxville area.

Decorating Den Interiors “From Inspiration to Reality”

E

VERYTHING KNOXVILLE was

delighted to feature Decorating Den Interiors owner and interior designer, Sandy Kozar, in the December 2014 issue of our magazine, and we are even more enthusiastic about the opportunity to highlight Sandy once again in our current issue. Sandy is among a small group of interior designers whose designs will be featured in the 2016 Knoxville Symphony League’s Show House. Everything in the two guest rooms the Kozar team designed will be sold to benefit the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra. This year’s Symphony League Show House was custom built by Johnson & Galyon and is located in the all-new Legacy Cove subdivision in the Rocky Hill community. Many of our readers are already familiar with Sandy’s award-winning design work, as well as being seen on HGTV as a Pro Network Designer, Knoxville’s Parade of Homes, Best of Houzz 2016, and Dream Room Winner, in addition to being featured in a variety of national and international design publications. Her design work is also featured in the book “The Kitchen Bible” by Barbara Ballinger, which is in its second printing. Clients appreciate Sandy’s unique approach to interior design, as well as that of her interior designer associates, Taryn Stait and Donna Prendergast. The Kozar design team is committed to delivering 6

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE April 2016

professional design assistance in a professional, approachable, service-oriented, and successful way. EK: Sandy, let’s jump ahead and talk about your participation in this year’s Knoxville Symphony League Show House. Tell our readers about your participation and just what they should expect. Sandy: As a participant, we donate a significant portion of our proceeds from the sale of items in our two designer upstairs guest rooms to the Knoxville Symphony. It’s our way of giving back to our community. The Show House is open daily to the public from April 9th through 24th, including two evenings. The Kozar design team of Decorating Den Interiors will be presenting design workshops on the grounds both Friday and Saturday, April 15 and 16, at 10 am and 1 pm and again at the same times the following Friday and Saturday, April 22 and 23. Decorating Den Interiors will present “Dream Makers” with before and after room photographs, as well as “Elements of Design,” which will teach you some basic principles of design that make your room “feel right.” EK: Tell our readers how Adele and Justin Timberlake played a role in your design work at the Show House. Sandy: I love Adele’s music style and her persona. To me, she is a strong woman with a

voice just as powerful! So, I thought, what kind of environment would she want to surround herself with? Raspberry velvet! Shimmering, flowing fabrics and comfy places to sit and write, bright colors of raspberry, cilantro, lime, royal purple (yes - that’s Adele!). I see her as pretty down-to-earth, so a collage of pictures from home. Now Justin Timberlake, well, that’s just fun! Doing a gentlemanly room with touches of whimsy - the “timber” giclee artwork and the fun tortoise shell chest with a tail drawer! Can’t you just see him relaxing on the crocodile leather chair? The distinguished fabrics certainly add to his identity. EK: The Symphony Show House showcases your unique design talents, but how do you collaborate with your clients to ensure that your design work reflects their unique lifestyle and personal tastes? Sandy: The best part of working with our clients is getting to know them. Most people are so anxious to show you their home and share ideas on how they’d like to see it different or share what they love about it. We are great listeners! We spend time considering all aspects of a design - from the function of the room, which always comes first, to the finishes. EK: What sets you apart from other interior designers? You work from a full studio featuring tremendous fabric selections and a sample Photos by Edie Ellison

library with more than 200 lines of furniture, accessories, lighting, artwork, upholstery products, and more, yet you prefer to meet with your clients in their homes. How do your clients benefit from your in-home consultations? Sandy: Our in-home consultation is always complimentary. Many others offer a consultation, but you have to travel to them. Going to a client’s home allows us to see your home from a holistic (whole house) approach. Also, we are able to see paint colors, fabrics, and finishes in the lighting they are going to be placed in. Most of all, it’s a service we provide to our clients to save them from spending their precious time traveling from place to place trying to find just the right piece. EK: What’s the next step after the initial consultation? Sandy: We discuss a decorating budget. (If you make a purchase of any kind, you usually will have a budget in mind. Those that say they don’t have a budget, well, that’s just not realistic.) We offer lines of good-better-best and luxury items, so we are able to meet most budgets. EK: If a client is contemplating a design project, how much time should they allow for completion? Sandy: If you truly want a beautiful room, it takes time. I know that in our instantaneous world, sometimes it’s hard to wait, but if you take the time to truly choose pieces that are made for you (like custom upholstery or window treatments), it can take up to six to eight weeks. The saying “it’s worth the wait” comes to mind. EK: What services do you offer your existing clients? Sandy: You may want to read this twice: We do

not charge for our design time when product is purchased! Plus, I can honestly say that we will spend more time on your design than any other designer, as we do not have to “watch the clock.” Another terrific part of our services is that we install your room in one day! We can complete your room while you’re at work, running errands, or simply having a spa day! That is the best day for us! Many people are so moved that they actually cry, and we always leave with a hug or two! EK: Take a minute to tell our readers a little bit about your interior designer associates Taryn Stait and Donna Prendergast. Sandy: Oh, I just love working with Taryn and Donna! I feel so fortunate, as we have such a creative, professional, and kindhearted environment in our studio. Taryn brings a fresh perspective to her clients. She is truly appreciated by her repeat clients for her attention to detail and creative designs. Donna, an experienced interior designer, has completed many designs in and around Knoxville during her career. Donna has a deep understanding of beautiful design and what it takes to create something lovely. EK: As a Decorating Den Interiors franchise owner, you have more than 200 lines of interior design products available to you. Why is that important to your clients? Sandy: We all love choices! Why not for our home as well? The majority of our lines are only available through us because we are a franchise; we have more “buying power” and have secured lines that are not available to most independent interior designers. EK: Do you find that most clients have a vision of what they would like but just don’t know how or where to start?

Sandy: Yes! That’s why they initially call us. They are at a loss. Maybe they’ve purchased something somewhere else and it may not fit, they don’t like how it looks in their home, or the quality is just not what they expected. I always praise those clients that call me before they make a major purchase, because we can save them costly mistakes. EK: What about clients with a limited budget? Sandy: We really are able to meet most budgets because of our extensive lines of products. If it is a large project, we can break it up into stages. Remember what I said about “it’s worth the wait?” Well, this is also a way to get quality pieces and build upon it over time. EK: How can a prospective client who may be considering using the services of an interior designer learn more about you? Sandy: Just call us at 865-982-6368, visit our website at www.SandyKozar.DecoratingDen. com, or simply email us at skozar@decoratingden.com. We would love to talk to you and spend a few minutes getting to know you and your project! EK: In closing, is there anything else you would like to add? Sandy: I am appreciative of all of our existing clients that have helped to make Decorating Den Interiors a successful Knoxville-based small business for more than six years and counting. We have made many great friends and always feel blessed with each and every client we have assisted throughout the years.

by ceramic artist Lisa Kurtz and photographer Dennis Sabo will be on display now through April 30 at the Art Market Gallery. Lisa Kurtz has been a functional potter for more than 37 years. An award-winning ceramic artist, she is a clay professor at Cleveland State in Cleveland, TN, where she teaches hand building and wheel throwing. After getting her master’s degree in clay at the University of Louisville, Lisa set up her first studio in the eclectic Highlands neighborhood in Louisville, KY. She has been an exhibiting member of many professional guilds, boards, and galleries. Her work has been featured and shown in galleries and juried fine arts and craft shows across the U.S. and is in many private collections nationally and internationally. Lisa throws and hand builds her clay pieces and often integrates the two methods to create her functional pottery, sculpture, and clay wall art. Dennis Sabo is an internationally honored photographer specializing in contemporary abstract, landscape, and seascape photography. His awardwinning work has appeared in various publications and institutions, including National Geographic, NOVA, PBS, Canon, Hilton Hotels, and the Anthology of Appalachian Photographers. Autumn in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a wonderful time to be in the park, and Dennis’s photography has transcended that seasonal experience into a magical fairytale of color, light, textures, and patterns. His choice of medium and processing is preserving images by infusing dyes directly into specially coated aluminum sheets. These metal prints reveal vibrant colors with breathtaking luminescence while maintaining archival quality. The Art Market Gallery is a unique gallery in Knoxville, because it is owned and operated by more than 60 of the best professional artists in our regional area. Hours are 11 am to 6 pm Tuesday through Thursday and Saturday, 11 am to 9 pm Friday, and 1 to 6 pm Sunday. The gallery is wheelchair accessible. Microneedling: The Latest Approach to Beautiful Skin

W

E WOULD LIKE to introduce microneedling, the newest skin

rejuvenation procedure, and announce our offering of this service. But first, some groundwork to help understand the procedure.

Cynthia St. Germain, BA, BSN, RN

Cynthia St. Germain, BA, BSN, RN, who has

been a registered nurse since 1996 and an aesthetics nurse since 2005, received a BA in Psychology from the University of Tennessee and a BS in Nursing from CarsonNewman College. She served in the US Army and attained the rank of captain. She is both a nurse injector and a trainer nationally for product manufacturers, teaching injection procedures, techniques, and theory to physicians and nurse practitioners. The nonsurgical injectable products Cynthia offers include: • Dysport® and Botox® • Restylane®, Perlane®, and Juvéderm® XC • Sculptra • Restylane® Silk

Elastin is a highly elastic protein found in connective tissue that allows skin to return to its original shape after being stretched, pulled, or pinched. Collagen, another protein, provides strength, flexibility, and resilience through a fibrous network for the growth of cells and blood vessels. In other words, it is the support framework for the skin. When skin is young, the collagen network is intact, allowing skin to retain structure and elasticity. As the body’s natural collagen production declines with age – and lifestyle factors (e.g., stress, poor diet, health imbalances, etc.) – skin loses its tone, and facial lines and wrinkles begin to appear. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally-occurring simple sugar that has great ability to attract and retain moisture. It also provides plumpness, firmness, and suppleness to the skin. The Microneedling procedure, also known as collagen induction therapy (CIT) or percutaneous collagen induction (PCI), is a minimally invasive skin procedure. Hyaluronic acid is applied to the selected treatment area, both for the chemical benefits of the substance and because it helps the MicroPen glide smoothly over the skin. (Picture the smooth glide of a razor using shaving cream versus bare skin that “catches” the razor.) The MicroPen contains tiny, sterile, single-use disposable needles that move up and down to create microscopic skin channels that will stimulate the body to fill with new, naturally-produced collagen and elastin. This creates a controlled skin injury, without pain, because the needles are super tiny. The small channels in the skin close very quickly, and the healing response begins right away. Post-procedure response: Depending on the depth of the treatment, the skin may only have a slight inflammation (similar to that of a sunburn), or there may be some small pinpoint bleeding, which stops almost immediately. Outstanding features: » It is safe, simple, and fast. » The needle penetration depths are adjustable. » Microneedling can treat fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, pore size, surgical scars, photoaged skin, and stretch marks. » It can be repeated safely and used on all areas of the body, including some where laser treatments and deep peels are not usually performed. » It can be performed on all skin types and colors. » Since the procedure doesn’t use heat, there’s no risk of burning the patient, such as in laser treatments. This reduces patient discomfort, downtime, and complications.

From my humble beginnings as a technician, I have worked my way up. information and ideas using symbols and imagery, visual communication is one of three main types of communications, the others being verbal and nonverbal. For most marketers, visual communications easily overshadows the other two, and for good reason! Visual Communications Are: IMMEDIATE: Studies have shown that the human brain deciphers images almost simultaneously in contrast to other forms which take more time to process. By some measures, visuals are processed 60,000 times faster than text! MEMORABLE: Researchers note that images are processed directly by long-term memory, allowing “etching” in our minds while words are processed by short-term memory, which only retains about seven bits of information. EVOCATIVE: Visuals affect us emotionally. For example, the color red can heighten our pulse and breathing rate, which is one reason for red stop signs and retail “sale” signs. Photos and graphics can be even more powerful than even color. PERSUASIVE: Academics who study visual aids conducted research on the use of graphics in the use of presentations and found that those who employ visuals are 43% more effective in obtaining desired results than those who don’t. CREDIBLE: The phrase “seeing is believing” has some truth to it. A university conducted a study asking 2,440 people how they evaluate the credibility of websites they were shown. Nearly half indicated the design or look of the site was the most important aspect for judgment of credibility. POWERFUL: Visual communications do what text alone cannot do by affecting us both cognitively and emotionally. As some of the research shown above indicates, graphics can expedite and increase comprehension, recollection, and retention, as well as affect us on an emotional level. Do you need to do more? To find out, enlist the support of our staff who are trained in graphic arts and the latest advancements in the field. They can not only cast a fresh and impartial eye on your efforts, but also are capable of offering imaginative solutions and informed suggestions.

Through scheduled investments such as $100 per month, you buy investment shares over time as opposed to pouring a big lump sum into the market. Why it is worthwhile in a bear market? First, when the market drops, the investor practicing dollar cost averaging isn’t hurt as much as the lump sum investor holding many more shares of the declining fund or stock. Second, a stock market downturn produces a “clearance sale” environment. Picture Wall Street with signs everywhere announcing 20% or 30% off. You have a chance to buy some top-quality companies “on sale.” Dollar cost averaging allows you to buy in at a lower price, obtaining more shares for your money. So what happens when the market recovers? Pat yourself on the back. You bought at the bottom of the market; as the market rises, you will have a lower cost basis and the associated gains. Plus, you continue contributing to a winning fund or stock. Perhaps, most importantly, you stay invested. Dollar cost averaging gives you a regular, passive investment strategy as opposed to market timing. In a volatile market, the active investor can quickly become a frustrated casualty of his or her impulses and foolishly “abandon ship.” Learn more How are you positioning yourself to take advantage of the markets? This is a good time to meet with a financial advisor to review or rebalance your portfolio and look toward your long-term objectives. If you’re not currently practicing dollar cost averaging, you may want to talk about the concept with your advisor. Ali Swofford may be reached at 865-690-0049 or ali@swoffordfinancial.com. EA VEGETABLES are loaded

with nutrients. Unfortunately, they get a bad rap because most people assume they are unsavory. But by examining their value and tasty ways of preparing, sea vegetables could be a featured cuisine on your dinner menu. Each sea vegetable is known for its specific qualities and healthful benefits. Most of all, sea vegetables can be purchased at stores that sell healthy ingredients, in Oriental shops, or online such as Maine Seaweed Company. Know your sources since waters should be unpolluted in order to have the best quality. Perhaps the most common seaweed is found in sushi restaurants. Nori is the wrap that delights sushi connoisseurs. Its value is unrivaled when it comes to powerful nutrients. The Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry published in 2011 on the health benefits of seaweed reported that some of the proteins in seaweed could be better sources of bioactive peptides than those in milk products. They were determined to reduce blood pressure and boost heart health. Nutrients are abundant, including vitamins A, B-6, and C, as well as iodine and fiber. The calorie content is also a plus, with 10 sheets of nori containing only 22 calories. Kombu is another seaweed that is loaded with nutrients and minerals. Kombu is known for reducing blood cholesterol and hypertension. It is high in iodine, iron, and calcium, as well as vitamins A and C. Kombu renders beans more digestible and less gas producing when cooked together. It contains enzymes that help break down the raffinose sugars in beans, which are the gas-producing culprits. Once they are broken down, we are able to absorb more of the nutrients and have less intestinal complaints. Wakame is a great seaweed for soups and salads. Wakame is not only extremely high in nutritional value, but

it is also extremely low in calorie and minimal in fat. Wakame only contains about five calories per serving, and it also burns fat. It helps to prevent heart disease, cancer, diabetes, blood clotting, and obesity. Wakame has beneficial effects on stroke, hypertension, viral infections, tumors, oxidation, and inflammation while promoting a good immune system. Fucoxanthin is an antioxidant found in wakame that was shown to burn fat in lab tests on rats and obese mice, prompting the rodents to lose weight, according to research by Kazuo Miyashita, PhD, and colleagues. The fucoxanthin appeared to boost the rodents’ production of a protein involved in fat metabolism. Also, levels of the omega-3 fatty acid DHA were increased when added to their diet. Add wakame to your daily diet for a boost of nutrients and fat burning qualities. Dulse is another seaweed that demands attention. Dulse contains iron and other valuable nutrients. Some of the most important health benefits of dulse may include its ability to improve vision, protect the immune system, build bone health, improve the thyroid gland, increase growth, repair and optimize the gastrointestinal system, lower blood pressure, strengthen the brain and nervous system, and boost circulation. Dulse is great on salads, baked into chips, and even made into sandwiches as a substitute for bacon. Sea vegetables are a mainstay in most cultures. They provide nutrients, vitamins, and minerals with other qualities of fat burning, increasing metabolism, increasing immunity, and other helpful cardiovascular benefits. John F. Kennedy noted that “it is an interesting biological fact that all of us have in our veins the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists in the ocean, and, therefore, we have salt in our blood, in our sweat, in our tears.” Seaweeds can be a big part of restoring the necessary biological mineral balance inherent from our ancient past.

Knox Essential Oils Offers Locally Made Body Care Products

E

VEN THOUGH our main focus

is essential oils, Knox Essential Oils loves to support local businesses when we can. We are proud to feature three local business products that are made right here in Knoxville. We offer Honey Dew Natural body care products and Wild Child Botanicals body care products, as well as Reclaiming Your Roots Herbal Teas and Alternatives. These three amazing companies are home-grown right here under our noses. At Knox Essential Oils, use these products every day as part of our wellness routines. We love that we can talk with the owners and know that what we are getting is safe and in line with our goals as wellness advocates. We love to teach people about these. Changing your body care products is one of the most important steps in wellness that you can make. So many of the commercially made products contain chemicals that cause a lot of problems on our bodies. Making the change to more sustainable and healthy choices is pretty easy. Knox Essential Oils also offers Himalayan

salt lamps. We offer a wide range of beautiful crystals. So how do the salt lamps work? Well, have you ever breathed and experienced the air around a thunderous waterfall... on a serene mountain top... at a pulsating seashore... or after a thunderstorm? Remember how fresh the air felt and how easy it was for you to breathe? What you experienced was likely the result of negative ions. The forces of nature through phenomena like rainstorms, waterfalls, lightning, sunlight, ocean waves, and wind create negative ions. Prior to a thunderstorm, you can feel the build up of tension in the air – the positive ions in the air are reaching their peak. Once the storm hits, the air produces electrical charges in the atmosphere and rain falls. The resulting oxygen-rich air bursts with negative ions. Once the storm passes, you can feel the sensation of calm and clarity in the air. This is how a salt lamp works. They counteract all of the positive ions that our environment and electronics put off. Placing salt lamps around your home can work wonders to reduce the amount of

unhealthy positive ions in your home. They can also help counteract allergens in the air and are beneficial for your chakra as well. Aside from the benefits they provide you, Himalayan salt lamps are also an environmentally friendly source of light. Stop in an experience all the wonders at Knox Essential Oils.

a long, damp winter. All of us are understandably excited to begin enjoying the great out-of-doors again, and our dogs are no exception. Our dogs, like us, are winter couch potatoes. But don’t try to turn them into springtime athletes overnight. We’re all tempted to play fetch or go on long walks with our dogs on the weekends, but then Monday comes and we’re back to work, and our dogs go back to the couch. This inactivity does not allow your dog’s muscles and joints to become acclimated to this vigorous weekend exercise routine, resulting in strained muscles and pain, and worse for arthritic dogs. Daylight savings time has begun, so begin taking your dog for shorter evening exercise activities. But stay off hot concrete, as your dog releases heat

through their foot pads, and their pads can only take a small amount of heat. And be diligent as well in keeping your dog’s toenails and fur on pads trimmed. Stay off of manicured lawns that may have had commercial fertilizers applied that can cause moderate to severe stomach ache, vomiting, and diarrhea. Consider using dog safe alternatives to the usual bone meal, cocoa mulch, and pesticides often used on lawns in the spring. All of these helpful tips will assure that your dog’s spring fling will be a happy, healthy time for both of you.

38th Anniversary Celebration

ow, how time has flown since that humble beginning in 1978 when The Lily Pad opened its doors to this fast-paced and ever-changing world of ladies’ fashions! What an exciting and rewarding experience it has been to dress many of you through the decades and now to have the privilege of providing the fashions you love for your daughters and granddaughters! Our purpose in 1978 was the same as it is in 2016 – to provide the ultimate in not only customer service, but fashion forward merchandise for women of all shapes, sizes, and ages! So to each of you, along with the awesome staff at The Lily Pad, a heartfelt thank you for 38 years of fun and fashion... an incredible experience and a dream come true! – Brenda

“I’ve known Brenda and The Lily Pad for at least 15 years and have seen the shop evolve and grow during those years. The clothing that Brenda chooses for her shop is first rate, and when I’m looking for something special or unique for a trip or an event, I know I will find it at The Lily Pad. Brenda and her staff are very attentive to detail, and they know their customers. Service is a priority at The Lily Pad, and that plus all the great clothing and accessories keep customers coming back.” – Judy Irmen, Rarity Bay

“Whether it be a special occasion or a new season, I can always find exactly what I’m looking for at The Lily Pad. The minute I walk in the door, Brenda, Renee, and the staff always seem to know exactly what I’m looking for!” – Beverly Harrison, Loudon

“When I think of shopping at The Lily Pad, I feel as if I’m going to visit dear friends. The amazing staff always makes me feel warm and welcome; we have fun and laugh a lot! I also leave looking my best in just the right clothes. Brenda buys for her store like she was picking out clothes with all of her clients in mind. Believe me, she always remembers what you like!” – Sandy Price, Rarity Bay

“When I walk through the door of The Lily Pad, it’s like entering an episode of ‘Cheers,’ because ‘everybody knows my name!’ They also know my likes and dislikes but still encourage me to step out of my comfort zone to try new things. It’s always a fun day at The Lily Pad!” – Polly Gerstenlauer, Knoxville “Brenda and I met seven years ago during a fashion show. I was ‘doing’ makeup, and she was ‘doing’ clothes. After seeing the clothes, I couldn’t wait to get to The Lily Pad. I was there the next day when the doors opened and spent the day there! The rest is history. I have never met anyone more passionate about her customers! She loves every minute of every day ‘playing dress up’ with her friends and customers. She has dressed them for every notable occasion and for every day. I am absolutely blessed to call her a friend and a mentor.” – Renee Fisher, Athens “I have been shopping at The Lily Pad since its beginning. It is still a special place where I love to shop each season for my clothes.” – Polly Click, Lenoir City

“I always go to The Lily Pad knowing that I will find what I need or something I love when I’m shopping with my daughter and three granddaughters! We are all pleased when each of us can leave with something special!” – Kathy Payne, Knoxville

“Shopping at The Lily Pad has always been a special treat for me. I know I will find fashionable and one-of-a-kind clothing.” – Glenda Click-McNabb, Lenoir City “It is a pleasure to shop at The Lily Pad in Sweetwater. The staff is so accommodating and helpful. The lines they carry are great for any occasion, especially for easy traveling.” – Lisa Mayfield, Athens

Fashion

“We moved to Sweetwater in September of 1979. At that time, The Lily Pad was a little shop in what was known as the Marvel Hotel. Locations have changed, and each has been a great improvement, but Brenda and her attention to her clientele remains forever the same. The Lily Pad and Brenda have been a constant in my life since my first visit in 1979. Such consistency in the ever-changing world of ladies’ fashions is rare and beautiful and so much fun! Thanks, Brenda, for all you and your staff do for all of us and for the years of friendship you and I have shared. Congratulations!” – Charlotte Mayberry, Sweetwater “The Lily Pad has been a dream come true for 38 years for me and my closet! I can speak for many of my friends who shop with Brenda, also.” – Jane Venable, Tellico Village “The Lily Pad has the best customer service of any store I know. Brenda and her staff go out of their way to make your experience with them wonderful. The clothes are great, too!” – Ronda Tucker, Decatur “I have shopped at The Lily Pad for more than a decade. I ALWAYS find things that I not only like in the store but enjoy wearing over and over again. Brenda and her staff wrote the definition for customer service. The personal attention and the great choices definitely make the trip from Signal Mountain to Sweetwater worthwhile.” – Patsy Hazlewood, State Representative, Signal Mountain, TN

“I have shopped with Brenda at The Lily Pad for years. After moving back to Athens, it is my primary boutique for clothing and accessories! Brenda has the perfect outfit for every occasion.” – Pat Christopher, Athens “The Lily Pad Boutique is a unique shopping experience in a beautiful venue. The quality of the clothing is unsurpassed – I’m able to wear their classic styles year after year but can also find the newest fashions every time I walk in. The whole staff has the ability to find beautiful yet comfortable clothing that flatters any size. It’s a true pleasure to shop there.” – Jessica Morgan, Sweetwater

in aesthetic medicine today is the use of injectable cosmetic fillers. These soft tissue fillers, which are injected into the skin, help to fill facial wrinkles, restoring a smoother, more youthful appearance. There are a wide range of fillers on the market today that are manufactured by a number of reputable pharmaceutical companies, each who have their own unique features and benefits. As to which filler is best for you, I would recommend that you consult with a trained and licensed medical professional with experience in the field of aesthetic medicine. While it’s not unusual for patients to take advantage of special offers available on these fillers, I encourage you to exercise caution here. No matter how great the offer is, remember that it’s your face. The money you save is no replacement for a licensed and experienced medical professional who I recommend inject your filler. And a great savings is no guarantee that the filler you receive is the best filler for you. At The Face Place™, I perform every facial filler injection. I am an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) with a Master’s Degree in Nursing with a concentration in Family Practice. I am also a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner. I have trained extensively with each facial filler company many times and keep this training current with any and all new techniques recommended. I founded The Face Place™ for individuals just like you who wish to take advantage on non-surgical facial rejuvenation in a relaxed medical setting. Patients should have total confidence not only in the facial filler being recommended, but also in the medical professional that provides the services. If you would like to learn how you can enjoy a more youthful and younger version of yourself, with the confidence in the medical provider that you deserve, I would like to invite you to call me to schedule your free, no-obligation consultation. Introducing Slender Body Solutions at Spa 9700

W

HO DOESN’T have a spot here

or there that could use some work? Even those who eat right and workout regularly sometimes wish they could just shave an inch or two from a particular area. Spa 9700 is excited to offer our clients an affordable, comfortable way to lose inches using the Body Light Te c h n o l o g y. The Body Light machine uses BEFORE lipid peroxidation technology, which uses an LED system to penetrate 10-12mm into your layer of fat. The treatment is a safe, 15-minute process. Light stimuAFTER lation opens pores in the fat cells which release their fatty acids into the space between cell membranes. This opening allows the triglycerides to escape and the fat cells to empty and shrink. These fatty acids are then transported to the circulatory system and metabolized by muscle movement during exercise. This quick and easy fat loss procedure provides predictable spot reduction with no pain, no weight loss drugs, and no invasive surgery! The entire treatment takes about 30 minutes. You will be able to treat the exact area of your concern. The average client loses 2” in 6–9 visits (2-3 visits per week). After treatment, resume a healthy diet and exercise plan, and you will be able to maintain your loss indefinitely. Spa 9700 is offering one treatment for $79, three treatments for $189, or six treatments for $329. Call 865-357-7721 to schedule your appointment.

Get Ready for Summer: The only three skin care items everyone needs on their shelf

SUMMER IS JUST

around the corner, and after a cold winter, most of us are ready to get back outside and play at the pool or on the lake. However, spending time outside can wreck havoc on your skin. There are literally thousands of different skin care products out there, all of which claim to be the “best” at preventing wrinkles, slowing or reversing the aging process, or hydrating your skin. It’s very easy to find yourself spending hundreds of dollars on products without really knowing what you’re getting. With that being said, here are three products that everyone needs in their skin care regimen: 1. The most important of the three is SUNSCREEN. The best sunscreen acts as a physical barrier. (One that is zinc-based is the best.) These sunscreens act to block the harmful ultraviolet rays from penetrating into the skin. This prevents the development of brown spots and will reduce the appearance of red veins on the face. It also helps slow the aging process by protecting collagen in the skin from breakdown and helps to prevent the development of wrinkled, leathery skin. When it comes to sunscreen, SPF 30 or higher is necessary for protection from damaging UV light. Our favorite sunscreen is EltaMD UV Clear, which is available in a clear or tinted version. 2. The second most important skin care product is retinoic acid (also known as tretinoin or Retin-A). RETINOIC ACID is a derivative of vitamin A. It helps speed skin cell growth and turnover (evening out discoloration and “brightening” skin tone), reduces pore size (helping

You can find Retinol in some over-the-counter skin care preparations. However, the FDA has limited the concentration that can be sold without a prescription, and even the lowest prescription strength retinoid is more than 20 times stronger than the strongest one you can buy in the store. Retinoids can and do cause some dryness and irritation when you first start using them, but this quickly resolves; people who have sensitive skin should start with a low strength retinoid a few days a week to get used to them before increasing either the frequency or strength of the preparation. 3. A good ANTI-OXIDANT is the last of the three “must-haves” in your skin care regimen. Anti-oxidants help by destroying the “free-radicals” that are produced within the skin when it is exposed to ultraviolet light. These free-radicals are the invisible cause of aging of the skin, and a

good anti-oxidant in combination with an effective sunscreen can help prevent their formation and slow the aging process. Look for products in this category that contain Vitamin C, Vitamin E, green tea, caffeine, and ferulic acid. The market is flooded with skin care products, all claiming to prevent or reverse the aging process. However, everyone’s skin is different and comes with its own set of unique needs. With more than 25 years of combined skincare experience, Dr. Jason Hall, Brooke Nix, and Cheryl Houser can help design a skin care regimen that works best for you. Biltmore Blooms W

HILE EVERY SEASON

brings unique touches to a Biltmore visit, springtime 2016 is full of new estate offerings. This year’s Biltmore Blooms celebration includes not only flowers coloring acres of gardens, but also a major new costume exhibition, an opportunity to be among the first to stay at Biltmore’s new hotel, tastings of new wine releases, the addition of new educational seminars, and much more.

BILTMORE’S SPRINGTIME GARDENS

Biltmore’s gardens and grounds will flourish this spring as a progression of colorful blooms blanket the estate, paying homage to the legacy of Frederick Law Olmsted and his final professional project – George Vanderbilt’s gardens at Biltmore. The estate’s celebration of Olmsted’s vision and the beauty of springtime runs now through May 26. In the earliest days of Biltmore Blooms, guests enjoy the tropical hues of orchids in the Conservatory as the exotic flowers reach peak bloom in March. Crocus, forsythia, and daffodils are among the first blooms to be sighted in the outdoor gardens, which give way to thousands of tulips in April with a concentrated tulip bloom occurring in Biltmore’s Walled Garden pattern beds. May promises irises, roses, and acres of azaleas with mountain laurels and rhododendrons close behind. Stay up-to-date with what’s currently flowering with weekly reports from the estate’s director of horticulture, Parker Andes, at www. Biltmore.com/bloomreport.

“FASHIONABLE ROMANCE: WEDDING GOWNS IN FILM” SPECIAL EXHIBITION

Throughout the duration of Biltmore Blooms, Biltmore is host to a special exhibition that’s included with regular estate admission, “Fashionable Romance: Wedding Gowns in Film.” More than 40 wedding gowns and wedding attire from 19 films such as Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, and Out of Africa will be on display in rooms throughout Biltmore House. The exhibition continues in the estate’s Antler Hill Village, featuring wedding fashion and stories from 30

the Vanderbilt family. A highlight includes the first-ever display of the Lee Family wedding veil, worn by Mary Lee Ryan, bride of George Vanderbilt’s grandson. This family heirloom was also worn by Mary Lee Ryan’s cousin, Jacqueline Lee Bouvier Kennedy, when she married John F. Kennedy. Elaborate indoor fresh flower arrangements complement costumes in the exhibition. For example, five costumes from The Duchess, featuring the wedding gown worn by actress Keira Knightly and the wedding suit worn by actor Ralph Fiennes, reside in Biltmore’s Banquet Hall. Flowers and ribbons in hues of peach, cream, light blue, and orange cascade from the room’s chandeliers, reflecting the film’s English Rococo era. In Biltmore House’s Library, red roses accent the wedding dress worn by actress Helena Bonham Carter in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Cost is $25 in addition to estate admission. » New Celebratory Wine Release – Romance: The fashions featured in “Fashionable Romance: Wedding Gowns in Film” have a Biltmore wine worthy of the elaborate costumes with a new sec sparkling wine called “Romance.” The sparkler offers a delicate strawberry bouquet and flavors of honey and melon. » Limited Release Spring Seasonal Wine: This spring’s semi-sweet rose wine is made from Merlot and Cabernet France varietals from the 2015 harvest season.

Justin Goodbread, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™

Your Questions Answered

Jim DeTar, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™

Heritage Investors Answers Questions from Everything Knoxville Readers FEATURED IN THE December 2014

issue of Forbes magazine, Knoxville-based Heritage Investors founders, Justin Goodbread and Jim DeTar, provide a boutique-style wealth management experience to their clients. Both CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERS™, Justin and Jim offer a comprehensive array of services to individuals, families, entrepreneurs, and non-profits while maintaining a low CFP® to client ratio. Occasionally referred to by their clients as their very own CFOs, Heritage Investors provides financial, retirement, strategic business, investing, financial wealth management, tax, and estate planning services to their clients. Reader Questions of the Month EK: How can a person nearing retirement protect themselves against the possibility of running out of money? The answer always seems to be “buy an annuity.” Justin: Well, annuities receive a great deal of press today. They seem to be promoted just about everywhere and by everyone. Recently on a local radio station, five different “financial experts” were promoting index and variable annuity products as the perfect solution to everyone’s financial needs regardless of their personal circumstances. Even Tony Robbins, in his book “Money, Master the Financial Game,” endorses the use of annuities. In stark contrast, many of the country’s top financial experts, including Dave Ramsey, Susie Orman, and Clark Howard, strongly advise against the use of these high commission annuity products that are marketed as a one-size-fits-all solution. It’s easy to understand all of the confusion among today’s retirees. But, before I discuss annuities, there are a few steps that a person nearing retirement can take, besides purchasing an annuity, that can reduce the potential of running out of money during retirement: 1. Eliminate debt! Debt is often the single greatest transference of wealth from your pocketbook to someone else’s. By paying off the mortgage on your home prior to retirement, you can actually lower your monthly income requirements. 2. Create a budget! Yes, I said the “B” word! As you transition from the accumulation phase 32

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE April 2016

of your life to the distribution phase (living off your accumulated assets) of life, you will need to understand exactly what your monthly expense will be. 3. Watch out for the grandkids! Often when we retire, we occupy much of our time with family, friends, or charities. And while a worthwhile pursuit, it’s easy to start spending your accumulated savings on the people or things you love and value. 4. Avoid large purchases! I call this the “big truck syndrome.” We have all seen the retiree driving around in the expensive new car or truck, as in my case. During our working years, caring for our family was our first priority, so the dream of owning your dream car was, well, just that – a dream. In retirement, we are tempted to fulfill our postponed dreams. But, I recommend caution. Avoid unnecessary large purchases that could erode your retirement nest egg. Now back to annuities. Everyone is in a different place financially. I am not suggesting that any financial product should always be used or always be avoided. I’ve observed the pros and cons of annuities. While they MAY have a place in your financial plan for the future, I would only recommend them as a last resort. Be weary of those “financial experts” who ONLY offer annuities. You’ll be well served to remember the old adage that “there is more than one way to shine a penny.” I have three pieces of advice for this reader: » Diligently research all of the products and services that meet your needs at the lowest cost. Remember that annuities by nature usually carry high fees. Even Equity Index Annuities have fees, but because this product may not be regulated in the same capacity, as a typical security related product, the costs are easier to disguise. » Work only with a Fiduciary who offers the highest level of customer service, and be weary of any “advisor” who only promotes high sales commission products. A CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, NAPFA member, or a Fee-Only advisor are great choices when searching for a personal Fiduciary. » Only utilize those strategies that offer the least amount of risk to achieve your goals. Obviously there is a reward to risk, but an

experienced planner with your best interest in mind will examine every component of your life as a means to building your net worth within the risk allocation you are comfortable with. One last thought on Equity Index Annuities: In a more recent blog post on our blog, www.planningisfun.com, I addressed in detail the precautions you should exercise when considering an Equity Indexed Annuity and pointed out FINRA’s warnings on these often misunderstood products. EK: How can I enhance the return on my investment without assuming too much risk? Jim: The question itself suggests this person is risk adverse. We would look to maximize this person’s net worth by taking a comprehensive approach to his or her unique circumstances. The specific answer to this question will vary based on the individual, their needs, and risk tolerance level. Given today’s low interest rate environment, where Money Markets and Certificate of Deposits (the default investment for the risk adverse) are yielding roughly 1% or less, you might be well advised to pay down high interest debt. For example, let’s say that you have $25,000 in cash above and beyond your emergency fund. Instead of placing this money in an interest bearing investment earning 1%, why not use these funds to pay off your credit card debt, car loan, business loan, student loan, or home mortgage? You can save much more by paying down or eliminating higher interest debt than you can ever hope to earn in a low interest CD. Get Your Wardrobe and Closet Ready for Spring NOW THAT SPRING

is here, it’s time to put away the winter coats and heavy sweaters. It’s also time to make a seasonal assessment of your closet and update your spring wardrobe. The highlights from New York Fashion Week include these 2016 spring fashion trends: » Shoulder cut-outs, asymmetrical necklines, and off-the-shoulder look » Fringed hems to add interesting movement » Wide-cropped trousers » Ruffles, placed sparingly on the garment » Bright-colored purses » Orange continues to be the new black, but it’s always a favorite for Tennessee fans Before you grab your so-last-year purse to go shopping, take time to shop your own closet, assessing your wardrobe and de-cluttering. Go through your closet, piece by piece, and only keep what you will actually wear – the clothes that make you feel good about yourself! After discarding clothing, you’ll have a base wardrobe to supplement with new spring pieces. You can buy only the clothes and accessories you need to keep both your budget and

closet under control. Admittedly, much of what makes the runway never ends up in your closet, and not because of the price. Designers take bold liberties with style striving for a “wow” factor but often end up with a “yikes!” Align the new trends with your own style, and select new elements that enhance your personal fashion aura. Custom Closet Design to Fit your Needs Personal style is also true for closets. A custom closet from Tailored Living of Knoxville lets you decide exactly the features and accessories you need to make your closet truly your own. For example: » Shoe lovers require lots of custom racks to organize a wide array of styles. » Love purses? From Hobo bags to clutches, you’ll need shelves or deep drawers. » An extensive jewelry collection is protected in velvet-lined drawers with sections for rings, bracelets, necklaces, and watches. » If you’re much taller or shorter than average, items can be hung at the height that’s comfortable for you. closet space while helping you achieve the perfect closet with regard to style, accessories, and budget. By planning space for jackets, blouses, dresses, pants, shoes, and other accessories, everything will have its own place so your closet stays uncluttered and organized. If it’s a shared closet, customization accommodates the needs of both people. April in the Garden SPRING IS COMING!

As a matter of fact, it’s making me nervous that spring is coming in such a hurry! Today it is 77 degrees, and the sun is shining. The birds are singing, the frogs are croaking, and the plants are growing. As a consequence, we all have terrible cases of spring fever, and we are nervously watching to see what surprises Mother Nature has in store. While we anxiously wait, there are many things we can do to get ready for when spring really does arrive. Here is your list for this month: » Take a deep breath and repeat after me: Average last frost is April 19. That means you don’t need to be in such a rush to get annuals and vegetables in the ground. If you plant them too early, they sit and pout and then refuse to grow, because they don’t like to be cold. You can, however, get your flower and veggie beds ready for planting by adding manure, peat, compost, or topsoil. You can also start seeds indoors. » I’m very successful at growing

weeds. I’m sure there are some of you who have rampant weeds in your yard as well. If you’re using a weed killer like Roundup, please read the directions. Make sure it’s warm enough for it to work, and don’t spray it on a windy day unless you want to replace your neighbor’s shrubs. Preen or another pre-emergent herbicide applied now will keep the weed population down in the upcoming months. If your back can handle hand pulling, weeding tools and hula hoes will make it easier. » Speaking of Preen, please don’t apply a pre-emergent to beds in which you’re going to sow seeds! Preen doesn’t know a weed seed from a flower or vegetable seed and will keep any from germinating. » If you have an irresistible urge to plant something, this is a great time to plant trees and shrubs. The ground is moist and starting to warm up, and plants have time to establish a good root system before it gets hot. » You can still prune some trees and

shrubs. Cut out all dead, diseased, and straggly growth on evergreens. Don’t go down below the foliage to the bare wood, however, as some will not recover. Gentle shaping is best. Deciduous pruning will depend on the tree or shrub in question. Don’t prune spring flowering plants until they have finished blooming! Summer blooming shrubs (roses, butterfly bushes, crepe myrtles, etc.) can still be pruned now if you haven’t done them yet, but please do it carefully. Call if you have questions. » You can prune semi-woody perennials like Artemisia, lavender, and careopteris. » This is a good time to add fertilizer to your trees and shrubs if you’re using an organic product like Hollytone. If you’re using non-organics, wait until later in the month. They cause a faster response, and we aren’t out of frost danger. » Start watching for problem insects, but remember that there are lots of little fellows out there that do good work. Our honeybees are struggling, and we need to be careful how and what we spray. In general, use the least toxic product first, spray at dusk, and use systemic products if the organics don’t fix your problem. » You also need to begin watching for signs of fungus. The damp weather hasn’t done us any favors in that area. Some plants, like roses, should be treated with a systemic fungicide on a monthly basis to prevent damage. » Don’t cut back the foliage of spring flowering bulbs like daffodils until after they turn yellow. They have to store up energy for next year’s blooms. It will help if you apply a fertilizer like Bulb Tone to the plant. » If you planted cool season veggies, you should be able to harvest them now. You can still plant them if you’re getting a late start or want a second harvest. » Stake tall perennials and cage peonies when they are still small. You can do it later, but it’s harder after they get bushy. » Houseplants will appreciate a little attention this month. Clean them up, check for insects, re-pot if necessary, and fertilize. Pinching off new growth will help leggy plants fill out. » Birds are starting to migrate, so keep your feeders full. Birdbaths are also a welcome treat this time of year. Birds appreciate a drink and a splash while traveling. That’s all for this month. If you have questions, please give us a call or stop by. We’re getting shipments in almost every day this time of year, so there’s always something new to help make your garden beautiful!

the Garden Study Club will hold their 52nd annual Talahi Plant Sale on April 9 from 9 am to 2 pm at Lakeshore Park. This year’s theme, Let it Grow!, is a celebration of the many plants that have been lovingly grown and dug from members of the Knoxville Garden Club’s own gardens. This year we will be offering several varieties of these treasured native and non-native plants. Garden enthusiasts will be able to purchase hundreds of perennials, wildflowers, annuals, and herbs. The perennials area will feature Lenten Roses, Astilbe, Heuchera, Bleeding Hearts, and unique varieties of Hosta. The wildflowers area will have our signature Jack in the Pulpit, Trillium, and several varieties of ferns. Annuals will include a wide variety of locally grown seasonal color, and herbs will offer flowering, culinary, and medicinal varieties, including such favorites as lavender, sage, basil, thyme, and rosemary. The “Ask and Expert” section will

make available some of Knoxville’s most experienced gardeners for individual questions. In addition, The Marketplace consignment area will feature area vendors with many garden accessories and garden art. Also, don’t forget to visit the Kudzu Cafe for lunch and the Sugar Shack Baked Goods booth to purchase delicious homemade treats. Last year’s proceeds from the sale totaled more than $20,000. The beneficiaries included Knox Heritage, Blount Mansion, Dogwood Arts Festival, Foothills Land Conservancy, Friends of the Great Smoky Mountains, Friends of the UT Gardens, Ijams Nature Center, Knox County Library’s McClung Collection, KGC Brunner Scholarship Endowment, Knox Youth Sports, Knoxville Museum of Art, Legacy Parks Foundation, Old Gray Cemetery, and Random Acts of Flowers. Admission is free, and the event will go on rain or shine. For more information, visit www.knoxvillegardenclub.org.

The Benefits of Building a New Home vs. Buying an Older Home

I

F YOU’RE LIKE

most homebuyers, you have a picture in mind of what your “dream home” should look like. When you search for an existing home with those features, it’s rare that you will find one with all the bells and whistles that you care about. Odds are that every prospective house will have a few things that need to be changed before you move in, such as paint color, flooring, cabinetry, or landscaping. As a result, you’ll have to spend more time and money to get the house into shape. Even if you’re lucky enough to find an older home that has the features you want, home repairs and maintenance costs could put a big dent in your wallet. New homes provide a builder’s warranty that’s good for at least a year, while other major components are usually warrantied for extended periods. Building a new home gives you the advantage of being able to design the look of your house right from the beginning and empowers you with choice. Instead of trying to cram your lifestyle into a predefined space, you can tailor a design that matches with the way you and your family want to live. Need a cozy nook for reading all of your favorite books? Or maybe an extra room for the gym equipment? Or how about a bonus room with the latest technology for the kids? The choice is yours! Jenny Blalock, Design/Licensed Contractor, can help you assess your family’s lifestyle and your living preferences. At Luxe Homes & Design, Jenny and her team will help eliminate the stress from your home design and building experience. Because there are hundreds of details that go into each home design, Luxe Home & Design will help you successfully navigate the design/build process that is perfect for your current and future needs and lifestyle, whether you’re a first time homebuyer or seasoned professional. Another major benefit to building a new

home is that it will be more energy efficient than an older home. New homes are built according to the latest energy conversation standards and feature higher efficiency insulation, doors, and windows, for starters. Plus, Luxe Homes & Design goes a step further by using tankless water heaters, Energy Star rated appliances, and water-saving faucets and shower heads that minimize utility bills. An older home usually has to be retrofitted with these features at an additional cost. By building with the latest materials and

designs, you can be rest assured that your brand n e w h o m e Jenny Blalock General meets today ’s Licensed Contractor hi gh b ui l di ng standards for structure, safety, and sustainability. New homes are fitted with the latest technology that makes it easy to maintain the comfortable lifestyle and living environment you want. You’ll also get the opportunity to design the house that perfectly suits your needs instead of purchasing somebody else’s problems. For a free, no-obligation consultation for your new home, contact Jenny Blalock at 865-755-4680 or visit www.luxehomesdesign.com. UT Gardens Plant of the Month:

BARRENWORT B

ISHOP’S CAP – barrenwort or

fairy wings, as it is commonly called – is the perfect plant to add to any shade garden. This often overlooked perennial, botanically known as Epimedium, is oh-so-easy to grow, and its tenacious habit provides a welcome first breath of spring with its airy flowers followed by a solid backdrop of attractive foliage. A member of the mostly woody barberry family, Berberidaceae, barrenwort blooms in March to April and comes in a kaleidoscope of colors, including white, yellow, purple, orange, red, and many shades in between, giving the gardener a broad palette to add to a shady landscape. Epimedium is commonly called bishop’s hat, because the four-parted, spider-like flowers resemble a clergyman’s hat or miter. Barrenwort is found throughout the world, with the greatest concentration found in China. The 50+ species that have been cultivated and hybridized for more than 150 years in Europe (even longer in Japan) all prefer shady woodland, scrub, and rocky places. Barrenwort’s growth habitat ranges from dense mounds to wide-spreading ground covers. “Ground-cover for dry shade” is a common characterization; however, the vast majority of species are clump forming and all of them prefer adequate moisture and well-drained, humus-rich soils. Those selections which most often make the dry shade ground-cover cut include E. × rubrum, E. × versicolor ‘Sulphureum’, and E. × perralchicum ‘Frohnleiten’. These selections are drought-tolerant only after they become established. The often heart-shaped or arrowheadshaped foliage distinguishes barrenwort from other shade-loving perennials. Foliage can be evergreen or deciduous, depending upon variety. Evergreen leaves with good substance usually maintain their color until spring. But some foliage suffers some winter burn, and plants will look their best with such foliage pruned. The leaves of deciduous

44

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE April 2016

varieties dry up and either blow away or hang limp with the first few frosts of the season. The foliage and blooms of many barrenworts are among nature’s first flush of color early in the spring. After they harden off, they will then produce a second layer of new spring foliage, with the same beautiful colors that they first displayed. If the weather brings a long, cool spring, barrenworts can linger with up to six weeks of colorful flowers and new spring growth. After a green summer, barrenworts sport fall foliage with beautiful shades of yellow, red, or bronze, making them a major player in the autumn landscape. Barrenwort makes a great companion for bulb plantings and later serves as an effective cover-up for declining daffodil and tulip foliage. Because of its low height, it lends itself well to being planted in the foreground of a garden. Heights range from six inches to twoand-a-half feet but are most commonly from 12 to 18 inches. Clump forming types usually mature to a plant that is as wide as it is tall. Barrenwort is cold hardy to at least Zone 5

and heat tolerant to Zone 8. For Mid-South landscapes, select varieties that have been rated as heat tolerant. Barrenwort is really an indispensable plant for any gardener. With so many wonderful attributes – great flowers and foliage, deerresistance, low-maintenance, and tolerant of dry shade – this plant should earn a spot or even two in any garden. For more information, visit www.epimediums.com. You can also see some specimens in bloom at the UT Gardens, Jackson, near the gazebo. The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit www.utgardens.tennessee.edu.

ET READY to let the great out-of-doors in!

The sun is getting stronger, and the days are getting longer. Before you know it, summer will be here, and with it will come the endless ways to have fun right in your own backyard. But are you really enjoying your outdoor living spaces to their full potential? In most parts of the country, if your outdoor space does not include retractable screen solutions, the answer is most likely no. Here’s why. Homeowners across the country are making significant investments in the design and creation of outdoor “rooms,” including porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful accent lighting, and even weatherproof artwork. However, the hot afternoon sun and biting insects often keep homeowners and their guests from enjoying their new outdoor spaces to their full potential. Retractable screens provide an answer to this dilemma. By combining indoor and outdoor spaces, these screen solutions enhance and promote the outdoor living experience, allowing people to enjoy the out-of-doors during hot summer days while extending the amount of time they can spend on patios and decks, where biting insects can become a nuisance in the evenings. Large motorized screens are the perfect solution for blending function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of a home, thereby remaining truly hidden when fully retracted. And the best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish your home’s views or esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many of these retractable screen solutions can be incorporated into virtually any architectural style. Increasing in popularity are different custom color and wood grain finishes that help to blend the screens into existing interior or exterior color schemes. Also, the screens can also be programmed to lower and retract with sun and wind sensors and can also be connected to your home’s general building automation system, allowing the screens to come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection is needed. For more information about retractable screen options that will allow you and your family to fully enjoy your home’s outdoor living spaces, visit www. tennesseescreens.com.

S MUCH AS I ADORE autumn,

my favorite season is still spring. It’s a time of rebirth when new foliage, blossoms, and flowers replace winter’s now dull, drab palette of colors. But in addition to the time most of us invest in preparing our home’s exterior landscaping and outdoor living areas in preparation for spring, it is also a time when many of us are getting ready to update our home’s interior as well. What’s on your interior springtime “to-do” list? A new tablescape for your dining area? A new accent chair for your living room? New art with vibrant colors to replace your existing pieces? Perhaps it’s time to replace your dining room table or that worn out recliner in the family room? There’s no limit to the many ways that you can freshen up your homes’ interior spaces for springtime. And the best news is that updating doesn’t have to break the family budget. In fact, with the money you can save at Consign To Design compared to paying full retail price for furniture, art, décor, and Oriental rugs, you might very well be able to afford that exotic trip that you’ve been postponing for years. The secret to buying quality, brand name furniture at up to 70% and even 80% off is Consign To Design. Hundreds of your neighbors throughout upscale communities within Knoxville and nearby lake and golf communities are new empty nesters looking to downsize or are updating their own homes.

46

Others are relocating, building new homes, and remodeling. Whatever the reason, Consign To Design can offer you high-quality, brand name furniture, art, décor, and Oriental rugs at unbelievably low prices. So if you’re ready to do some springtime interior updating to your home this spring, Consign To Design is here to help with nearly 30,000 square feet of values. Get Proactive

Break the Cycle of Soil in Your Home CO-OWNER

John Fitzwilliam

W

HEN IT COMES to your floors,

soil is any foreign matter that accumulates, including dirt, dust, grease, or cleaning chemicals. As your family and pets move throughout the home, these contaminants are spread from one room to another, from carpet and hardwood to tile and back again. This process can leave the homeowner frustrated and not sure what to do. When one part of your home is cleaned, the soil load from other areas will quickly contaminate the cleaned areas, making your effort futile. In addition, the very act of scrubbing a kitchen or bathroom floor pushes tiny particles of dirt, oil, and grime deeper within your floor, causing it to look dingy and discolored. Without a deep down, pore cleansing,

48

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE April 2016

extraction method of cleaning, one can only hope to reach the surface level of the floor, which has little effect on its appearance. This process just keeps repeating itself, so the home environment never gets truly clean. Getting proactive will stop this grimy process in its tracks, eliminating all embedded soil from within your tile and grout or concrete, as well as removing dust mites, soil, and traffic patterns from your carpets. Your floors will be sanitized, grout returns to its natural color, and all soil that’s been deeply embedded in your flooring is extracted and evacuated. Once all the flooring types in your home have been cleaned and sanitized, it’s a great idea to seal your tile and grout and concrete areas. Surface Doc’s high-quality sealer

is backed by a lifetime guarantee and will make future cleaning easy. Imagine never using a chemical on your floor again. As for carpets, Surface Doc recommends using a Teflon Guard to protect the carpet fibers from pet stains, accidents, and dirt. Once your entire home is shining from the inside out, from the driveway and garage floor to the bedroom and bathrooms, maintaining it will be a breeze. And, if your family is like mine, a clean home will make your step a little lighter and your day a little brighter. Call Surface Doc today to get a dysfunctional environment functional again. Of course the demonstration is absolutely free, and your satisfaction is guaranteed. Visit us online to view before and after pictures at SurfaceDoc.com. Or give John a call at 865-567-1986.

your home, don’t neglect your Oriental rugs. They’ve experienced a great deal of use during the long winter from wet and occasionally snow covered shoes, including shoes contaminated with salt used to melt snow on sidewalks and driveways. And no, simple vacuuming will not remove these accumulated contaminants, which can actually damage your rug’s natural fibers and organic dyes. Oriental rug washing is the only way to thoroughly clean your valuable rugs, and if you’re a pet owner, rug washing is an absolute necessity. Most Oriental rug customers think that the first priority of Oriental rug washing is to “clean” their valuable rugs. Well, that’s only partially correct, as the first priority should be “safety.” Let me explain. Oriental rugs are far different from their wall-towall cousins. Oriental rugs are hand woven using natural fibers and organic dyes, including, believe it or not, tea and vegetable dyes. While beautiful to admire, Oriental rugs cannot be cleaned using conventional carpet cleaning methods. These cleaning systems can actually permanently damage your valuable rugs.

$50 OFF ORIENTAL RUG WASHING ($450 Minimum Order. Certain Restrictions Apply.) Expires 4/30/2016

Successful Oriental rug washing combines two important items – decades of experience and a state-of-the-art multi-step washing system, using specially treated water that significantly reduces potential damage to your rugs. Simply put, there is no replacement for experience and a proven washing system. We have recently completed important upgrades to our West Knoxville-based Oriental rug washing boutique, where we pamper your rugs. With twice the capacity that we had previously, you can be assured that every rug we wash using our proprietary 11-step Oriental rug washing process will be thoroughly and safely cleaned. If you have not already done so, I encourage you to visit us online at www.superiorofknoxville.com and view our informative three-minute video to discover the Superior of Knoxville Oriental rug washing difference. eliminating bugs is to find the source, and that’s what Dayton’s knows just how to do. Killing bugs where you see them won’t do the job! Carpenter Bees: Resembling bumble bees, the round holes carpenter bees make in exterior wood look like they have been drilled. Plug the holes, and they will just drill new ones somewhere else. Favorite places include wood decks or porches, roof eaves, trim, railings, siding, outdoor furniture, and fences. Ants: Did you know that the largest part of an ant colony is found underground? Spraying them is not effective, for they will still keep coming back unless their nest is eliminated. Termites: These silent destroyers are hard to find, for they like to hide in out-of-the-way places, such as behind walls and underneath flooring, eating 24/7 and causing structural damage to your home. Dayton’s termite inspections are FREE, and their technicians are trained to spot signs of a potential termite problem. For home sale termite inspections, Dayton’s has lockbox accessibility for added convenience. Ladybugs, Stink Bugs, Box Elder Bugs, Kudzu Bugs, Paper Wasps: Be watching for them to emerge in the spring after comfortably hibernating in your home all winter. Just because you haven’t seen them doesn’t mean they’re not there. New customers will receive $25 OFF an initial pest control treatment with an annual contract and $150 OFF a termite treatment with the Termidor HP Injection System. Dayton’s other services include radon testing and mitigation, CleanSpace® Crawl Space Encapsulation, monthly/quarterly/ one-time pest control services, pest control for bed bugs/rodents/wasps/bees, fungicide/moldicide treatments, and VA/FHA termite inspections.

Brad Greenwood Designs will have unique botanically themed copper garden ornaments and steel features for the home and yard. Dano’s Hot Dogs, with an expanded menu, will again be at this event. Back by popular demand, the Society will be offering ‘The Rising Sun™’ Redbud. This new Redbud displays brilliant, golden tangerine and lime-colored, heart-shaped foliage all summer and was a quick sell-out plant last year. The Society will also be offering a limited supply of another new redbud tree, ‘Alley Cat’. ‘Alley Cat’ was literally discovered in an alley in Kentucky and has beautiful green and white variegated foliage, which is stable and scorch resistant. ’VE NOTICED a trend in my practice – people not yet enrolled in Medicare are moving to high deductible health insurance plans to offset the ever-increasing costs of monthly insurance premiums. Whether people are selfemployed, want to retire early and have to bear the cost of health insurance before age 65, or just don’t have generous employer-paid health insurance anymore, the need to manage health care costs is a high priority. But few people know of a terrific, triple tax-advantaged opportunity to pay for outof-pocket health costs. What is it, you ask? It’s a Health Savings Account (HSA). Whether you obtain your health insurance through the healthcare exchange or through your employer, the 2016 rules simply require that the qualified high deductible health insurance plan has: 1. A minimum annual deductible of $1,300 for an individual or $2,600 for a family; and 2. A maximum out-of-pocket of $6,550 for an individual or $13,100 for a family. If your plan meets those criteria, you are on your way to enjoying many HSA advantages, including: » Tax-deductible: Contributions to the HSA are 100% deductible up to $3,350 for an individual ($4,350 if over age 55) or $6,750 for a family ($7,750 if over age 55). » Tax-free: Withdrawals to pay qualified medical expenses, including dental and vision, are never taxed. » Tax-deferred: Interest earnings accumulate tax-deferred, and if used to pay qualified medical expenses, are tax-free. » HSA money is yours to keep: Unlike a flexible spending account (FSA), unused money in your HSA isn’t forfeited at the end of the year; it continues to grow tax-deferred. Best of all, if you meet the requirements, you have until April 18th to make a fully tax-deductible contribution to an HSA for 2015 taxes. Call us today to see if you qualify. Join us at our next Lunch ‘n Learn to learn more, including: » Easy steps to set up an HSA account with your local bank if your employer doesn’t offer one. » The broad array of qualified medical expenses that can be paid with tax-free dollars. » The limitations of an HSA once you enroll in Medicare and how to use an HSA if you are over 65 but still working. 10th Breakthrough Run for Autism is April 9

T

HE BREAKTHROUGH Run for

Autism celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, with a goal of attracting 1,000 people to the 5K Run/Walk and 1-mile Fun Run that supports Autism Breakthrough of Knoxville. The non-profit organization is committed to helping adults facing the challenges of autism in the East Tennessee region. The run, beginning at 8 am on Saturday, April 9, takes place during National Autism Awareness Month. The run starts and finishes at Regal Cinemas Pinnacle Stadium 18 in Turkey Creek, with the course running through quiet neighborhoods behind Turkey Creek in Farragut. The Breakthrough Run takes place on a flat, certified course with chip timing for the 5K. Autism Breakthrough invites any individual with a disability to participate in the run or walk as a Breakthrough Buddy. A Buddy may request to participate with a peer volunteer, who will run or walk the course with the Buddy. Breakthrough Buddies receive special recognition during award ceremonies. Luke, the 28-year-old son of Judi Brookshire and Ron Koksal, is a Breakthrough Buddy who enjoys leading the 1-mile Fun Run on race day. Photo by Susan Lee

John and Tim, 30-year-old identical twins who are the children of Beth Ritchie, Breakthrough’s Executive Director, also enjoy taking part in community activities. They will again be Breakthrough Buddies. Beth, Judi, and Ron were among the small group of Knoxville area parents of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder who created Breakthrough in 1999 to address the lifelong needs of those with autism. They realized that few services were available for these children once they left the public school system. Autism Breakthrough provides community-based and individualized services that offer quality care, a safe environment, family

connection, and community involvement in a cost-effective way. The organization has developed housing, recreational, and educational programs and work opportunities as the first such organization in Tennessee to provide those services specifically for adults with autism, according to Race Director Chelsey Vaughan, who serves on the Autism Breakthrough Foundation board. Funds raised through the Breakthrough Run for Autism benefit the services that Breakthrough provides. Lori Tucker, WATE-TV news anchor, is serving as honorary chair of the run. Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett will be on hand to help distribute awards. Community, corporate, and school teams are encouraged to enter, and awards will be given to the largest teams. Teams have brought a festive atmosphere to the race, designing their own t-shirts or wearing matching accessories. Families and friends have built teams supporting an individual on the autism spectrum. Registration is $30. Preservation Success Stories in East Tennessee

I

N 1889, Knoxville railroad magnate

Charles McClung McGhee and his friend and associate, Edward J. Sanford, formed the Lenoir City Company and laid out plans for one of the first planned cities in America. Lot #1 located on the southeast corner of A Street and Broadway was sold in 1897. Shortly after that a two story building was constructed and used for retail and a drugstore. This corner became the heart of the town with the addition of the post office and a large hotel. In 1920, a second building was built next door, and the two buildings shared an open second floor. These two buildings continued being significant contributors to Lenoir City for the next 60 years, holding the Rexall drug store, various retail stores, the Southern Bell Telephone exchange, a dance hall, an armory, and the post office. During the past 30 years, commercial interest in downtown declined as larger retail stores built on the outside of town. The Waller family owned these buildings since 1935 and donated the buildings in 2014 to Knox Heritage, who then began looking for a new owner. Diane Powell and Mark Uhran had just relocated from Washington, D.C. where they renovated and operated a bed and breakfast in the historic district of Capitol Hill. They submitted the winning proposal to Knox Heritage and became the proud owners of these two century-old buildings. During the past year, they have begun renovations. The hardwood floors have been brought back to life, and the tin ceilings and plaster walls have been repaired and painted. The exterior was painted and given a fresh new look, including restoration of the large Rexall signs. All new mechanical systems are being installed to prepare the structure for the next 100 years! Currently Diane and Mark plan to house a coffee shop and bakery in the first floor, which will grow to include additional craft food and drink vendors. The second floor will be designed as a large event venue for weddings and community events. It is extremely important to Diane and Mark to be able to revitalize this building and the downtown district, as well as create spaces that the community can share and be proud of again. Their enthusiasm for revitalization is spreading, and new retail stores are opening nearby. A Downtown Merchants Association has recently formed and is planning several events and improvements to bring attention to the downtown district. On August 27th, a Knox Heritage/ETPA Summer Supper will be held in the building, giving guests the first opportunity to see 56

this iconic building return to life. For more information, visit www.knoxheritage.org. 80 Years Later in Norris In 1933, the Tennessee Valley was reeling from the effects of the Great Depression. The land was over-farmed, farm prices were at an all-time low, banks were folding, and businesses were laying off workers or closing all together, leaving people starving and homeless. In May 1933, Roosevelt signed the Tennessee Valley Authority Act, creating TVA for the purpose of bringing energy to the Tennessee Valley and providing environmental stewardship and economic development in an area that was reeling from the Great Depression. At TVA’s first meeting, the board decided to build Norris Dam and what is now known as the City of Norris to house the workers. When Norris Dam was completed in 1936, it provided flood control and electric power generation and created Norris Lake, which offered recreation opportunities for residents and visitors. At the peak of construction, TVA had nearly 2,800 men at work building the dam and preparing the reservoir area. Norris Dam is one-third of a mile long, 265 feet high, made of a million cubic yards of concrete, and cost $30.5

million to build. The Norris Dam Power Plant has two generators, each with a capacity of approximately 50,400 kw, that transforms the power of falling water into electricity. Each generator is driven by a 66,000 horsepower turbine. While TVA was working on the dam, the Civilian Conservation Corp. (CCC) developed the lands that lay to the east and west of the dam, which would become Norris Dam State Park. The CCC built 20 rustic cabins and the Tea Room. Throughout the years, the Tea Room has served several purposes, including a restaurant for visitors, serving ice cream from a window, and selling light supplies to campers. It has been a dance hall, and during its entire time of existence, it has been a meeting place. On July 30th, a Knox Heritage/ETPA Summer Supper will celebrate Norris Dam and the State Park. Guests will enjoy touring the inside of the dam and a supper full of local flavor in the Tea Room. For more information, visit www.knoxheritage.org.

The East Tennessee Preservation Alliance works to preserve the structures and places with historic or cultural significance in Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Hamblen, Jefferson, Knox, Loudon, Monroe, Morgan, Roane, Scott, Sevier, and Union counties. ETPA partners with Knox Heritage to serve as the regional arm for preservation activities in these 16 counties.

Relax and Engage: Four Ways to Learn on Vacation

Students at the Sailing School at Chautauqua Institution

WITH BUSY SCHEDULES

and jam packed to-do lists, people often view vacations as a time to simply lounge by the beach and soak up the sun. And while that may sound like paradise, when was the last time you truly pursued a passion, goal, or curiosity? Vacation is a great time to take your goals and passions off the back burner. A learning vacation can help you reclaim old interests and discover places you never knew existed. One of the best learning vacation destinations is in western New York State. Home of Chautauqua Institution and many other learning venues, it’s a place to both relax and grow your mind. Whether you’re traveling with family, friends, or all on your own, here are some of the best ways to learn on vacation. Find a destination focused on education Instead of booking a flight to your ordinary vacation spot, why not try somewhere new? Take an adventure to a destination known for learning. The Chautauqua Institution is known for its life-long and vacation learning program. This educational center founded in 1874 on Chautauqua Lake features 750 acres of historic buildings, vacation homes and cottages, the grand Athenaeum Hotel, and a nine-week summer schedule filled with 58

Vacationers enjoying the waterfront in Bemus Point, NY learning opportunities for all ages. Nearby the City of Jamestown is home to the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History, the Robert H. If you’re interested in birds or nature, choose to vacation in a place with recreational trails and nature gardens. If you’ve always wanted to give skiing or snowboarding a shot, find a resort like Peek’n Peak Resort in Chautauqua County with learning academies focused on winter sports, as well as golf. From sailing and kayaking to fly fishing and stand up paddling, the possibilities are endless for what you can learn in western New York. Be adventurous with food and drink Make a point to try a dish you’ve never

tasted at least once per day on your vacation. Challenge yourself to get out of your comfort zone and taste the local cuisine. Wherever you’re staying, ask for recommendations on which restaurants to check out. You could even poll some locals to find the best places to go for coffee and any other must-visit places. Wine enthusiasts can research local wineries to schedule tours and tastings to discover a new favorite and learn how it’s made. Lake Erie Wine Country has several wineries, events, and attractions to keep you informed and entertained while relaxing on vacation. Make travel friends Traveling gives you the opportunity to meet people from all across the world. Strike up a conversation with the couple or family next to you at lunch and you could end up making some life-long friendships. Staying in a locally owned hotel or bed and breakfast can also be easy ways to interact with new people on a daily basis. Look for dining and sight-seeing partners; you never know who you’ll meet. Kinky Friedman M

AYBE SOME OF YOU have

heard of him. I’d describe him as the Will Rogers of our day. He is hands down one of the most entertaining and colorful people I’ve had the privilege of interviewing. Ever. Friedman is one of the most gifted writers of any kind (music, literature, or punditry) I’ve ever read or met. Admittedly, a lot of what he has to say may singe the most sensitive of listeners. However, what he does say – and how he says it – is the most logical, thought-provoking words you’re ever likely to hear. An accomplished singer, songwriter, and pundit, Friedman recently released his latest CD, The Loneliest Man I’ve Ever Met, and I had the honor of chatting with him via phone at his ranch about this album. “I’m kinda jazzed about this,” he said. “It’s hard to get excited when you’re 70 years old, and I can’t get my head around the idea that I’m 70. Of course I do read at the 72-year-old level. We will see how this all transpires.” I asked Friedman which song from the new CD he would use as a calling card to draw people’s interest to buy it. “I would personally point them to ‘Pickin’ Time’. Johnny Cash’s song that almost nobody appears to know. I tell you, I’ve talked to Johnny Cash fans, and they’ve never heard it! It’s not about a guy looking

forward to hauling his cotton into town. It’s more than about pickin’ cotton. We all have a pickin’ time, you know? We sure better take advantage of it when pickin’ time comes. So yeah, this record is personal. It’s not written to educate anybody. It’s written for a silent witness. That’s who it’s written for – who is either a dead sweetheart or a lost cat – both of which I have in my life. Yeah, and by the way, my animal rights group takes a lot of time.” Friedman then proceeded to tell me the back story about how he got Willie involved on “Bloody Mary Morning.” “Well, I did kind of a dirge like version of ‘Bloody Mary Morning’, which I really liked, but it’s really slow. It’s real slow. You hear some lyrics that most people haven’t heard because nobody’s listening because he sings it so fast. But there are some really nice lyrics in there. So anyway, Willie didn’t like that take. He thought it was too slow. I was just doing it without Willie there. I played it for Willie, and he didn’t like it. His people said, ‘Willie wants to do something you’ll both be proud of.’ I talked to him and he said, ‘Let’s do something more engaging. More upbeat.’ So, that’s what we did.” As our call wrapped up, I asked Friedman how he wished to be remembered and what he hoped his legacy would be. “I don’t know. I haven’t really thought

about what I want to be remembered as. Any life that you look at too closely is a failure – particularly your own. If you look at people that you think were great men like Churchill and John Lennon, for instance, both were convinced that they were failures, you know, with good reason. I mean, Churchill won the war, and they just pulled the rug out from under him. John Lennon was convinced that Paul McCartney was the genius of the Beatles. Paul did write a couple of great songs, but John was the genius of the band.” “I saw Ringo in Austin at a concert that he did there,” he continued. “I had a chance to talk to him. I knew him from the Bob Dylan tour and all of that. He played the voice of Jesus on my song ‘Men’s Room L.A.’ – which I did not write. It was written by Buck Fowler. Anyway, I asked Ringo who his favorite Beatle was, and he said John. I said, ‘Me too, present company excluded of course.’ “But now the reason why he was the spiritual heavyweight was he inspired. Without him I doubt that they would’ve been an inspirational band. I mean, he reached people! That’s kinda what we’ve lost.” Then, answering my question, Friedman concluded, “I don’t know. I guess on my tombstone, how about, ‘I aspire to inspire before I expire.’” You can read the entire inspiring, no-holdsbarred interview at www.boomerocity.com.

How Do You Know If Your Financial Advisor is Qualified? IT’S A COMMON

misconception among people planning for their financial futures that all financial planners are created equal. Nothing can be further from the truth, especially if your John Fawaz financial planner is not CERTIFIED “certified.” The fact is that FINANCIAL anyone can call himself PLANNER™ or herself a “financial planner,” whether they are an insurance broker, investment representative, or an accountant. Confusing things even further are the numerous designations that these financial planners often add after their names that are intended to create credibility for themselves. But very few of these certifications can compare to the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification. CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERS™, or CFPs, must meet very stringent requirements, including a comprehensive course of study at the college or university level and pass a comprehen sive t wo - day, 10 -hou r CF P Certification Examination that tests their ability to apply their acquired financial planning knowledge in an integrated format while adhering to strict code ethical conduct. Non-CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ designations often require little more than a short online course that might only take a couple of hours to complete before the applicant is free to use that official designation after their name. A valuable resource that those searching for a qualified financial planner might not be aware of is the BrokerCheck link on FINRA.org. On this site, you will discover just how many years an advisor has been practicing, the licenses they hold, as well as the designations they have earned. You will also be able to determine if they have had any complaints and/or lawsuits filed against them. You will also find a helpful link on the website listing the various requirements for each designation that an advisor may use. Selecting a qualified financial planner is your first step to a secure financial future.

Educator Profile

BY COURTNEY CRAIG

John Faulconer

AS PRINCIPAL

of the Career Magnet Academy, John Faulconer has a clear idea of what career readiness should entail. His vision may well become reality, as he’s been invited to join the 2016 inaugural cohort of the Tennessee Educator Voice Fellowship as a founding member. “I want to bring to light the importance of redefining college and career readiness to include more than just an ACT or an AP score,” he said. John was hired in November 2013 to begin the design and hiring phase for Career Magnet Academy. The facility opened its doors in August 2014. “As a state, we need to ensure that all Tennessee students graduate from high school but with more than just a high school diploma,” he said. “Students need to graduate with industry certifications that will allow them the opportunities to find careers in fields that are in high wage, high demand, and high skill. Students need to graduate high school having already earned transferable college credit hours. In some cases, we need students graduating high school earning a high school diploma, as well as an associate degree from

one of our community college programs.” John earned his bachelor’s degree in special education from the University of Kentucky. Then he went on to earn his master’s degree in educational leadership from Tennessee Tech, and he’s working on his doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Kentucky. For John, there’s no such thing as a typical day. He’s constantly adjusting his schedule to meet the needs of students and faculty. He says his biggest challenge is fitting it all in. “I enjoy being around great scholars, great parents, great educators, and great community stakeholders,” he said. “I love when scholars have that ‘light bulb moment.’ When you get to witness it ‘click’ for them.” John will be accompanied by John Bartlett of Bearden High and Amy Crawford of West Valley, organizer of Reach Them to Teach Them, on the Tennessee Educator Voice Fellowship. “I enjoy coming to work every day and feeling that God has blessed me with an incredible group of individuals that I call colleagues,” said John. “I enjoy working with scholars on day-to-day issues that they face

Planning for Retirement O

NE THING all of us self-employed

individuals share in common is our busy, and occasionally hectic, lifestyles. This balancing act of family and business however, though challenging, is the true mark of every successful entrepreneur. Busy lives, which are often the end result of our success, require us to prioritize a multitude of decisions – some important, some not so. Some require our immediate attention, and others can be postponed. One important decision all too often postponed or ignored altogether is planning for retirement. If you’re in your 20s or 30s, it’s understandable. But it’s never too early to begin planning. In fact, the earlier you start, the greater the resources you will accumulate to secure a successful retirement. Also, the earlier you start planning, the greater flexibility you will have should you need to recover from an unexpected financial setback. Sadly, there are a growing number of selfemployed persons at or near middle age that have put off retirement planning for

Choose wisely, and find an “expert” that is truly as committed to your goals as you are. Choose as if your future depended on it, because it does. far too long. Relying on social security or the equity in your home or business is no assurance of a safe and secure retirement. In fact, the uncertainties existing in today’s real estate and financial marketplaces that have become the new normal during the past decade should serve as a warning to all of us contemplating retirement, whether in 30 years or in the not too distant future. So how should you proceed in planning for retirement? First, make it a priority. Second, unless you possess the needed skills to plan for issues such as investing, long-term care, wills, and much more, you’re likely going to need to rely on the advice of a

professional. But here’s where your plan fo r re t i re m e nt can become challenging, because not all financial experts are “experts.” Many “experts” are merely commissioned salespeople who lack the education, experience, or even the desire to conduct the comprehensive analysis of your unique circumstances required before creating your personalized retirement plan. It’s not always easy to select the real experts from those masquerading as one. Take your time, ask for references, and make certain that you’re comfortable with how your financial planner is remunerated. Choose wisely, and find an “expert” that is truly as committed to your goals as you are. Choose as if your future depended on it, because it does.

April Fool’s! All Work and No Play... WITH APRIL COMES

spring, beautiful blooms, warmer weather, and pollen… ushered in by April Fool’s Day! When the kids were little, the jokes were constant. Funny phrases, surprises, and silly little jokes followed with childish giggles that warmed hearts and left us with precious memories. Thinking back, April Fool’s Day is a warm reminder to lighten up and have fun. Life has its pressures, yet why the constant rush? As one guilty of working hard and pushing myself, what good is it if you can’t enjoy it? Especially this time of year when breathing in the fresh air and enjoying the magnificent blooming creation is such a boost! Fun is, well, fun. But how does that affect our artistic side? Creativity was never meant to thrive behind four walls, staring at a screen. As a speaker and writer, no one understands the confounds of sitting behind a computer for hours better than me. But knowing when it’s time to take an intentional break can make all the difference. Creativity! Use it or lose it!

» Get outside. The vast skies and sounds of spring open our minds to new ideas. Just to get outside and take a walk (with no phone) can clear our minds and lift our spirits. Plus it reduces stress and increases activity. » Have fun. When is the last time you belly laughed? If you can’t remember, it’s time for change! Don’t be so task-oriented that you can’t relax and enjoy the people around you. Take time for friends and hobbies. » Be spontaneous! We are far too scheduled, leaving little room for the unexpected. That is where important relationships slowly begin to suffer. Lingering conversations bring meaning and comfort. Authenticity can’t be scheduled. Intimate conversations are not on a to-do list. A quiet moment alone is worthy of personal commitment. » Don’t just go with the flow. Be different. Just because everyone else does something does not mean it’s for you. Determine your priorities, and don’t get led on some worthless guilt trip for saying no! We must know our “nots” in life if we are to

be great at what we do and who we are. » Finally, take care of your body. Lack of energy can be improved greatly by eating right and moving more. Life is so much richer when we feel energetic and invigorated. Added to that the correct amount of restful sleep and the physical balancing act becomes easier to manage. April Fools? The joke’s on you if you are all work and no play! Don’t take yourself too seriously. Tackle problems, prioritize, and yes, make lists. But don’t defeat yourself by being too scripted to enjoy anything. Take a bold and confident stand for your best life while giving your creativity an energetic boost! Do what really matters, and have fun while you’re at it! Beth Townsend is a dynamic freelance speaker and writer and can be reached at 225.910.7426. Family Life

BY W E N DY JAC K S O N

Traveling with Your Senior

WARMER WEATHER is around the cor-

ner. Many of you are probably already thinking about vacations and travel during the spring and summer months. If you plan to include a senior member of your family in your travels, there are some things you should know and can do to make it an enjoyable experience for everyone in your family. Preparations for Senior Traveling If you are traveling by plane, try to avoid booking flights during peak hours. This will cut down on your stress level and the stress level of your senior. Also, ask the airline if they have a tram available that will take your family from the parking area to the airport entrance and ask if a cart will be available for your senior once he/ she is inside the airport. If you are traveling by ship, alert the ship if assistance will be needed to get your senior on board. You should also alert the ship liner ahead of time about any health conditions your senior has that may require special care – such as traveling with oxygen or the need for special food.

If you will be staying at a resort or hotel, make sure you book a room on the ground floor. If a ground floor room is not available, confirm the resort/hotel has an elevator before you commit to the stay. You should opt for rooms that have a refrigerator and microwave and plan to keep food and drinks on hand. When possible, choose a resort/hotel that offers a continental breakfast. This will enable your family to have something hot to eat if you should be running late in the mornings. When possible, purchase tickets to any events you will be attending in advance and call ahead for meal reservations. This will cut down on the wait time that your family will have to experience. What You Should Bring You should make a list of your senior’s medical conditions, medications, medication dosages, insurance cards, emergency contact information, and physician contact information. Keep one copy with you, one copy in your luggage, and one copy with your senior. If you

are separated from your luggage or your senior gets separated from you, this will ensure that this necessary information is still available. Keep your senior’s medication with you. Do not place it in your luggage. If your luggage should be displaced, your senior won’t be forced to go without his/her medicine while you try to get it replaced. Also, no matter the temperature of your destination, take an extra jacket for your senior. If you are taking a long trip, have snacks on hand. With a little planning your family getaway can be fun, smooth, and enjoyable for everyone in the group, no matter their ages. This is the time to make memories with your loved ones, so avoid as much stress as possible with advance planning. Wendy Jackson is a freelance writer based in Blount County, Tennessee. HAT ARE WE TEACHING

our children to help them understand what a vital role they play in keeping our communities, schools, and country a place of safety, beauty, and freedom? A gentleman and a lady realize that their influence and responsibility begins inside the walls of their home, but it doesn’t stop there – rather, it reaches as far as their dreams can take them. Parents, we must do more. We must do more to teach our children how to serve, how to sacrifice, and how to do hard things. Why? Because if we don’t, their families, our communities, and our country will suffer for it. How do we do this? We start by being an example. That’s always the answer isn’t it? It really is. I know we’re busy, and no, I’m not suggesting that we can be on every board and say yes to every inquiry for help, but if we organize ourselves and prioritize our actions, we can probably say yes more than we do. What I love more than our children just watching us serve our community, our family, 66

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE April 2016

and our friends is when we serve alongside our children. I know you can relate to the feeling you feel when you’ve been working in the yard all day, and at the end of the day, you’re tired but feel like you’ve accomplished so much, and now you can enjoy the fruits of your labor. We want our children to feel the same way, but to even increase the feelings of satisfaction and self worth, we look for opportunities to serve on behalf of others. There is a great book called The Kid’s Guide to Service Projects that has 1,000 service project ideas. I think it’s wonderful. I love it because it has small ideas, big ideas, and ideas that one person can do alone, with their family, or as community. Parents, if you want to increase the love between your family members, if you want to decrease the tension or animosity in your family, if you want to lead your family to greater joy, serve together. Whether you are going across the street to clean up the yard of an elderly neighbor or going to the nursing home to

visit a complete stranger, as you serve together and get outside of your and your children’s comfort zones, you will find joy. It’s only when we are stretched, pushed, and challenged that we grow, and growing is what leads to joy. Sit down with your family and brainstorm ideas of service. Identify the talents that each of your family members have, and then think of how you can use those talents to bless others. This will be so fun! Really! Spring Into a

NEW YOU! M

Matthew B. Doppelt, D.O., F.A.O.C.D. Board Certified Dermatologist

ANY OF US HAVE experienced the frustration of

not being able to rid ourselves from unwanted fat despite dieting and exercising. Patients seeking a solution to stubborn fat have a revolutionary new option. SculpSure, the first FDA cleared, non-invasive laser lipolysis treatment, is designed to create a permanent, visible reduction in hard-to-slim areas in just a single treatment. Southeastern Dermatology is the first dermatology office in Tennessee to offer this revolutionary treatment. What is SculpSure? SculpSure is a state-of-the-art solution that relies on controlled laser technology. According to information from studies performed by the manufacturer, Cynosure, one 25-minute SculpSure treatment can reduce fat in target areas by up to 24%. For patients, this means SculpSure offers a quick, easy, almost-painless solution to a lifetime of insecurities. The innovative technology behind SculpSure is based on heating targeted fat cells to the point of permanent destruction (apoptosis). The body’s immune system then takes over and removes the damaged cells. During the ensuing 6 to 12 weeks, the treated areas will shrink to their new shape. For patients, this means a quick and simple end to stubborn fat. Why Choose SculpSure? While there are several other non-invasive fat removal devices on the market, SculpSure sets itself apart from the others in several important aspects: » SculpSure is very efficient. Each SculpSure treatment lasts 25 minutes from start to finish. Meanwhile other similar treatments, including CoolSculpting, often last 60 minutes or longer. The short treatment time means that a patient could literally come in for a treatment during their lunch hour and return to work without any disruption in their schedule. » SculpSure also offers the advantage of being a relatively painless procedure. Most patients feel a tingling sensation intermittently throughout the treatment, which is generally well-tolerated. » Fat cells treated with the SculpSure laser are heated to 42 to 47 degrees Celsius or 107 to 116 degrees Fahrenheit – just a little warmer than a hot shower. These temperatures do not damage the skin (which is actually further protected by contact cooling) and can be used on virtually any skin type. » SculpSure is highly customizable, and just about any area of the body can be treated. There is also not a minimum amount of fat

required for the treatment as there is with CoolSculpting. » Studies suggest that SculpSure has a 90% patient satisfaction rate, and its RealSelf.com rating is 100% at the time of this writing. As a board-certified dermatologist with more than a decade of experience in Knoxville, I can help you develop a body sculpting treatment plan to help you feel confident in your own skin. For more information about SculpSure and other treatment options, visit www.drdoppelt. com or call 865-474-8800 to schedule an appointment.
