PRING IS A TIME of renewal when we witness new leaves starting to show on trees and bushes and colorful spring blooms putting on a beautiful show. Here in Knoxville, dogwood blooms are celebrated all month long with the annual Dogwood Arts Festival. Color is finally coming back to the landscape, brightening our Photo by D. Roberts Photography surroundings and lifting our spirits. I know I get energized and inspired in spring to make some changes to my interior décor, and although we have been making renovations all last season, I still like to brighten up my rooms with a touch of spring. Sometimes all it takes is to add a nice colorful spring floral or maybe just change out some pillows on the sofa. Inspiration for home décor is endless, but sometimes it can be a bit overwhelming. I never know how something will look in my space until I try it, and sometimes it is not what I

Decorating Den Interiors

The Kozar Design Team

I

N THIS ISSUE of Everything Knoxville, it is our distinct pleasure to feature award-winning residential and commercial interior designer, Sandy Kozar, owner of Decorating Den Interiors. Sandy and her multi-talented design group have been featured on HGTV as a Pro Network Designer, Best of Houzz in 2016 and 2017 for customer service, and Dream Room Winner. Well known and respected throughout the Greater Knoxville area for her creative planning and design of both residential and commercial spaces, Sandy’s designs are featured in the popular “The Kitchen Bible” book by Barbara Ballinger, now in its second printing, as well as in several Knoxville Parade of Homes entries. Sandy’s commitment to each client is to transform the conventional design process into an enjoyable one, while at the same time offering outstanding quality and close attention to detail while remaining within each client’s budget. EK: Sandy, what would you say sets you and your design team apart from your peers? Sandy: We are a degreed professional design team with both the education and experience required to design beautiful and functional spaces for our clients. We typically do not sell design hours, focusing instead on the products and services each client desires in order to provide them with the greatest impact for their individual budget. This unique approach allows us to spend the time necessary to design a complete and beautiful design for our clients and not be focused on the clock. Because we are part of an established and well respected international franchise, we can offer our clients the largest selection of case goods, upholstery, custom window treatments, accessories, art, and more in Knoxville, with access to more than 200 vendors nationally and internationally. We provide good, better, best, and even luxury lines for our clients alongside all of the latest trends for today’s lifestyles. Clients also appreciate that we offer a complimentary consultation to all new clients, which is a great opportunity to discover a little bit more about how we work. EK: What is included in your complimentary consultation? Sandy: We tour the home with the homeowners and conduct a detailed question and answer period in order to understand what

6

the client is looking for and considerations to include in the recommended design of their home. We like to know their personality, their needs, their likes, and dislikes so we can custom create their design to be oneof-a-kind and unique for them. We also help establish the homeowner’s budget to determine the project’s scope, after which we schedule the design appointment and start making the magic happen for the client. EK: How long does it take for the magic, as you have described it, to happen? Sandy: If you truly want a beautiful room, it takes time, but it’s always worth the wait. After the initial consultation, it takes five to 10 business days to present a complete design to the homeowners. Our comprehensive design plans include three-dimensional space plans, renderings, and elevations, as

well as finish and fabric samples, customized for each project. Once the client makes a decision, we then order the selections. The furniture, window treatments, and other custom products generally require a six to eight week lead time. Then we install it all in one day, just like you see on HGTV. We find that revealing the transformation this way really makes a statement. EK: You recently began a Discover Series feature in Everything Knoxville. Tell our readers what you hope to achieve with this new series. Sandy: We are really excited about this new Discover Series that we feature each month in Everything Knoxville. Each month we focus on a different interior design topic and then delve into a variety of recommendations related to the subject that we trust your

readers will find both helpful and inspiring. Actually, we launch each monthly topic in Everything Knoxville and continue with helpful email tips throughout the month, as well as host an interactive workshop on the third Thursday of the month. This month our topic is “Outdoor Living,” with the interactive workshop scheduled for 10:30 am on Thursday, April 20th . If you would like to attend, we ask you to RSVP today, as space is limited. You can call our Design Studio at 865-982-6368 or email us at skozar@ decoratingden.com. We always have a fun interactive quiz, light refreshments, and fun and easy tips you can try at home yourself. EK: What topics do you plan on covering in your Discover Series in the future? Sandy: Our topic for April is “Outdoor Living.” We will also be exploring “Dining

Rooms” and more in the coming months. EK: Share with our readers how they can benefit from your Discover Series. Sandy: Our Discover Series is actually reader directed. While we suggest monthly topics, our readers direct our monthly narrative by asking questions. Our responses to their questions will hopefully help all of your readers. EK: If you don’t mind, give us an example. Sandy: Gladly. Here are a few questions submitted and our responses to our “Outdoor Living” feature for April. Reader: I like the look of upholstered outdoor furniture, but won’t the fabric mildew and fade? Response: Not necessarily. There are a variety of specially designed furniture and fabrics just for outdoor applications. Outdoor fabrics like Sunbrella®, which are perfect for

both indoor and outdoor spaces, resist stains, sun fading, and rain. This means far less maintenance and more family fun in the sun this season. Reader: I already have outdoor furniture, but my patio feels incomplete. How can I create more of a balanced feel? Response: Rugs are a wonderful way to ground and balance any space, whether indoors or out. Many of our lines have beautiful heavy duty rugs that are made for outdoors that dry fast and resist fading. Remember to get an outdoor rug pad so there is ventilation under the rug for maximum efficiency and longevity. Reader: My family and I love our outdoor living spaces. How can I give our outdoor spaces more of a homelike feel? Response: Adding accessories and accents like mirrors and lamps really help add that final touch to outdoor spaces. Some of our favorite recommendations are to reflect the light in darker corners with a starburst mirror or showcase that perfect view with tall plants. Many of our clients also have outdoor kitchens and TVs, allowing them to spend as much quality family time out-ofdoors as possible. Reader: Our family likes to eat outdoors, but the angle of the sun shines right into our eyes. Any suggestions? Response: Blocking the intense rays of the sun at certain times of day can make a huge impact on the comfort of a space. Outdoor window treatments add a great layer of coziness, as well as control over the sun during certain times of the day. Whether full length Sunbrella® drapery panels or woven shades from Hunter Douglas®, window coverings are the perfect touch to add to outdoor living and the perfect solution to the glaring sun. EK: I know our readers will continue to look forward to your continuing Discover Series feature in future issues. In closing, is there anything you would like to add? Sandy: As the days are getting warmer, and with families anxious to begin enjoying their home’s outdoor living spaces more, we would like to offer your readers a 20% discount on select outdoor furniture and accessories, good through April 30th. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of our wonderful clients for both their past encouragement and support.

Knoxville Marble Polish

Your Premium Stone Care Connection BY JULIE MURRELL

A

LTH OUGH TH E TIMELE SS elegance and lasting durability of natural stone surfaces has made them the perfect choice for use throughout many homes and commercial spaces for centuries, twenty-three years ago, when I married Bob, I knew nothing about stone. Bob, on the other hand, had been working for many years for his father’s family business, which was one of the largest suppliers of machines and chemicals to the U.S. natural stone industry. I could have never imagined the adventures we would share as we traveled around the world studying natural stone restoration from master craftsmen. A lot has been learned over the many years, miles, and square feet of stone that Bob and I have journeyed together. Every restoration project has added its own valuable lesson. I will never forget the very first of the many marble restoration projects that Bob took me on when

we were newlyweds. It was in an amazingly appointed motor-coach. We restored the badly etched and worn marble corridor and kitchen floor of a million dollar tour bus. It was a tight squeeze with many lessons learned, but it was awesome to put the shine back on the tiles and a smile on the owner’s face. I continued to travel with him as he taught. The international trade shows were my favorite trips. My knowledge and skills were growing, and I felt a desire to provide a marble restoration solution for Knoxville. I wanted to design a system to educate homeowners and their housekeepers on how to properly care for and maintain the beauty of the investments they had made when they chose natural stone and to provide restoration services for worn, scratched, etched, and stained natural stone surfaces. Today, with my oldest daughter, Logan, also educated in the school of rock, I now

have a dependable assistant and the drive to grow that desire into a business. Together with Bob’s continued support, expertise, and consultation, Logan and I provide our clients with the highest quality of restoration services. Knoxville Marble Polish provides restoration and maintenance solutions for marble, granite, slate, travertine, limestone, and terrazzo surfaces. From a full grind restoration to a final polish and everything in between, we have solutions for your particular indoor/outdoor natural stone issues. We are a family business passionate about preservation/restoration of all-natural stone installations. hyaluronic acid dermal fillers has arrived! These new products, Restylane Refyne and Restylane Defyne, could be game changers in the facial aesthetic industry! They are both FDA-approved and have been used since 2010 in Europe under the name Emervel. Dean Kleto, MD

Dean Kleto, MD, who received a medical degree from the University of Tennessee, Memphis, and completed a general surgery residency at Chattanooga’s Erlanger Hospital and a plastic and reconstructive surgery residency at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, is a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon. He is affiliated with The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and The American Society of Plastic Surgeons and has practiced in the Knoxville and Sevierville areas for more than 25 years. Dr. Kleto offers a variety of surgeries that include: • Breast procedures: reduction, lift, reconstruction, and augmentation, using the AxisThree 3-D Simulator, which allows patients to visualize breast augmentation results • Body contouring: liposuction, tummy tuck, body lifts, butt lifts, and thigh lifts • Facial procedures: eyelid surgery, brow lift, facelift, and rhinoplasty 865.524.2442 Photos by Christian Lange

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally-occurring substance found in human skin. Its production, however, diminishes with age. Therefore, hyaluronic acid dermal fillers have become an important component in helping rejuvenate facial tissue. Furthermore, this new generation of products allows more flexibility with facial expressions, thus preventing an unnatural or hardened look. The effect of treatment can last up to 12 months and is especially successful in softening moderate to severe laugh lines. This new technology may be the answer you have been looking for! And the office of Cynthia St. Germain, BA, BSN, RN, is where you’ll find it. Call to make an appointment for a consultation, where all your questions about the products will be answered. Speaking of making an appointment, if you have or are in the process of planning your spring/summer vacation, remember to also plan for any procedure(s) you want to enhance your figure. This is the time to make an appointment for a breast augmentation or tummy tuck, and Dean Kleto, MD, is the physician who can help you attain that enviable silhouette. Dr. Kleto has a well-deserved reputation for achieving his patients’ expectations and satisfaction. Have the look others want!

Hardwood Flooring Facts Every Homeowner Should Know

I

F YOUR HOME has hardwood floors, you’ve likely already discovered t hat t hey requ i re occasional tender loving care in order to retain their natural beauty. But at some point, normal wear and tear and UV damage will require the help of a professional if you want to restore your home’s hardwood floors to their original showroom quality appearance. The great thing about hardwood flooring is that it can usually be refinished multiple times, allowing you to restore their original showcase quality look. Two methods that are most often promoted to homeowners today are “dustless” and “sandless.” Despite both being advertised as hardwood refinishing systems, the two methods are completely different. “Dustless” refinishing is the only method that allows you to restore your floor’s original finish. “Sandless” refinishing, on the other hand, is more or less a cosmetic method used to enhance only your floor’s topcoat. Here are some important facts to consider when refinishing your hardwood floors: Which method will restore my hardwood floors to like-new condition? » “Sandless” – This method is used to

enhance your floor’s topcoat and will not eliminate imperfections, dents, scratches, or other damage. » “Dustless” – The only method that incorporates sanding, “dustless” will safely return your floors to their original like-new condition without dust or fumes. Can my hardwood floors be restained? » “Sandless” – The answer is no. Because there is no sanding, stain cannot penetrate into the surface of the wood flooring. » “Dustless” – Yes. In fact, you can also change stain colors. Another important fact to consider is that the application of stain offers you an extra layer of protection as it helps to seal your refinished floors. At European Fine Hardwood Floors, we not only use our skills learned from Euro-

pea n f looring a r tisa ns to install the finest hardwood f looring, but we a lso use the newest technology and training to provide you with a dust-free and fume-free hardwood f loor restoration experience. Taxing

B Y Y V O N N E M A R S H , C F P ® , C PA

T’S EASY TO THINK

that you’ll be paying less tax in retirement. After all, you’re not working full time anymore and, odds are, your income is less. But hang on – let’s look at the whole picture: Yvonne Marsh, Your deductions may disapCFP®, CPA pear: Once the house is paid off and the children are grown, you may not get the same tax breaks for deductions and dependent exemptions. And beginning in 2017 for all age groups, medical expenses have to exceed 10% of adjusted gross income rather than 7.5% to be deductible. Your Social Security might be taxed: The IRS has a pesky concept called provisional income where you add up half of your SS benefits, plus all of your other income (including tax-exempt interest). If it is greater than $32,000 for married couples and $25,000 for singles, some of your SS will be taxed. This dollar amount is not indexed for inflation in the tax code and catches more and more retirees each year. You might be in a higher tax bracket at age 701/2: Many retirees have a golden period between retirement and age 701/2 when they are in a lower tax bracket. But once the minimum distributions kick in from your tax-deferred 401(k)s and IRAs, you can easily get pushed to a higher bracket, where you will stay for your lifetime. Your finances get more complicated: You don’t have an employer to withhold taxes anymore, so now you need to pay quarterly estimates or manage the withholdings of your SS and taxable investment distributions. Plus, you may have multiple investment accounts that need consolidation to withdraw money tax-efficiently. The good news is that there are solutions for all of these tax challenges. And that’s what we specialize in – preparing retirees for the next phase of life in the most tax-efficient manner possible. You CAN control how much tax you and your heirs will pay in the future. Every tax year that goes by without a plan is another lost opportunity, and it’s up to you to get started. Call 622-2162 for a complimentary meeting, or reserve your spot at our next Lunch ‘n Learn to learn more.

Tennessee Pottery Festival BY LOGAN HULL, GRE AT SMOKY MOUNTAINS HERITAGE CENTER DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL E VENTS AND RENTALS

I

N ITS INAUGURAL YEAR, the Tennessee Pottery Festival is set for Saturday, May 6, in Townsend, Tennessee. Located at the Great Smoky Mountain Heritage Center, this festival is to become a yearly tradition with approximately 15 renowned potters sharing their clay art and craft this year, and it will continue to grow each year. This event will give pottery collectors a chance to meet the artists and purchase pieces to take home. The selected potters for 2017 have been recommended by their peers, but the organizers plan on creating a jury for applicants for future years. This festival was created to showcase the many different styles and varieties of handmade clay art and help support the art community by giving them an outlet to sell their goods. The event will run from 10 am to 4 pm (rain or shine) and is located outside the Heritage Center in the Historic Village. Admission is $5 for adults (GSMHC members and non-members), and children 5 and under are free. Featured artist, Joe Frank McKee, will hold demonstrations throughout the day. McKee is the co-owner of the Treehouse Pottery studio in Dillsboro, NC, and the co-founder of the Western North Carolina

Pottery Festival held in November each year. There will also be hourly pottery giveaways for visitors. A collection of the nation’s finest potters from New York, North Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee will display and sell their art for a wide range of prices. This is a perfect time to learn from and discuss different styles and forms of pottery with the expert potters. With the unique backdrop of the Heritage Center, the equally unique pieces of art are sure to delight shoppers. Many different styles of pottery will be showcased and available for purchase, including wheel thrown, functional stoneware, clay sculpture, horsehair, earthenware, and Raku. The Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center would also like to welcome visitors to view a new collection of Pottery Artifacts. Discovered in Blount County, this collection was created between the Woodland and Mississippian time periods. These Native American pieces were created and used approximately from 1600 BC until 1000 BC. The Blount County Fire Department will be onsite cooking their “Cast Iron” lunch of mixed greens, pinto beans, cornbread, and cobbler for a donation of $10, which supports

their “Coats for the Community” fundraiser. Live music will also be on hand in the Historic Village by local Maryville College students, Maddie Carpenter and Jordan McCullough. Special thanks to our sponsors: Richard and Joni Maples, Cades Cove Cellars, and our media sponsor, The Daily Times. 5 Flavorful Ways to Prepare Pork A R T I C L E C O U R T E SY O F B P T

T

IRED of the same old casseroles

and pasta dishes? As the seasons transition, you’re probably looking for fresh and flavorful ways to prepare satisfying foods for your family and friends. An increasing number of home and professional chefs are using pork to produce mouth-watering, palate-pleasing recipes. Pork is a satisfying, excellent source of protein that’s packed with flavor. What’s more, it’s budget-friendly and versatile, which allows you to customize pork with your preferred flavors and cooking methods. Want to know the hottest cooking tips and trends for pork this year? Consider these insights from five-time James Beard Award nominee Chef Jose Mendin. For more meal inspiration, visit www.PorkTeInspira.com. Savory main dish, fewer calories To prepare delicious pork without adding extra calories, use cooking methods like grilling or roasting that don’t add fat. Pork loin and ribs are great options for grilling or roasting. Look for lean cuts such as the pork tenderloin in the meat case. Many of these cuts meet USDA’s guidelines for “lean,” which means they have less than 10 grams of fat per serving. Customize with spice rubs Spice rubs are an easy way to customize flavors and infuse them into pork. Herbs and spices with heat are trending, so don’t be afraid to enhance your rubs and give them that extra kick. Embrace Cuban influences Many of today’s hottest cooking trends have Cuban influences. For example, try marinating a pork tenderloin in citrus, garlic, and onions – also known as “Cuban-style.” Serve on top of rice and beans or place between two pieces of bread and enjoy a sandwich bursting with flavor. Experiment with the traditional Pork offers a fantastic base for expanding on the flavors you already know and love. For example, spicy teriyaki is reinvented with a touch of spice for a special meal any day of the week. Try the recipe at the right to see for yourself!

The Best Fashion Rule for Spring 2017: There Are No Rules!

I

B Y B R E N D A B R YA N

F I H A D to

sum up in two words about spring 2017 fashion trends, I’d say “anything goes!” Even the base fabrics can’t seem to make a decision and are a blend of various textures and finishes; colors range from stark white to wild floral prints, fabrics from “crinkle knit” to polished cottons. Trouser styles are going everywhere… from skin-hugger to wide leg! The best rule is that there are no rules! The wider pant leg is sophisticated yet relaxed. It must be said, however, that the wide leg pant is not for everyone. It’s for that very reason they’ve never been THE dominate style to conquer the fashion scene. Skinnies have a long life left in them, but this is the year in which flares are on trend, and the wide leg pants are there alongside them. Leggings and Skinnies Still by far the number one style in slacks, remember these look their best when paired with a slightly longer top, covering the derriere. Many styles are hitting the market as ankle length, giving a slightly dressier look than the “cropped” pant, which began losing its appeal last Style for Spring/Summer: summer. The Ankle Pant Wear the wider leg pant with heels, please! Flats simply will never complete this look as heels will… wear with a slimfitting top to balance out the volume on the bottom half and with ’70s glam… a wide leg trouser, platforms, and a big, floppy hat. Begin playing with the wider leg trousers now, and you’ll be ready for the next season – fall – where you’ll see even more of this style. So while you don’t want to ditch your leggings and skinnies, it might be a good time to re-introduce a pair or two of wider-leg pants into the mix! Let us show you the looks for spring 2017 and the fun you can have with each style in this “no rule” season!

New Exhibitions Opening at the Emporium Center on April 7

HE ARTS & CULTURE

Alliance is pleased to present five new exhibitions at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from April 7-28. A public reception will take place on Friday, April 7, from 5 to 9 pm to which the public is invited to meet the artists and view the artwork. Most of the works are for sale and may be purchased through the close of the exhibition. The First Friday reception also features jazz music by Vance Thompson & Friends from 7 to 9 pm in the Black Box. Complimentary hors d’oeuvres will be available. Little River Artists in the Lower Gallery Little River Artists include Thomas Cover, Aleksandr Cherepov, J. Austin Jennings, Michael Cover, Annalee Bohon, and Brittany Elle. The exhibition will feature J. Austin various styles that make Jennings up an impressive collection of contemporary art with an eye toward interior trends. They use a variety of mediums, including oil, acrylic, glass, and wood. While specializing in large scale atmospheric abstract paintings, they also feature more traditional landscape oils, as well as a beautiful array of wooden “frame boxes.” Sharon Gillenwater and Michael McKee: Acrylics and Oils in the Balcony Gallery Raised in a small coal mining community in southern West Virginia, Sharon Gillenwater was always interested in art. While living in Fort Worth, Texas, she saw an ad in the local paper stating, “If Sharon you can hold a Gillenwater brush, I can teach y o u t o p a i n t .” This was the beginning – she started to pursue her passion for art. While in Knoxville, Gillenwater took lessons from several teachers and eventually found her way to Bob Ross, where she became a Bob Ross instructor. Her next move was to Johnnie Liliedahl at the Liliedahl School of Classical Oil Painting. Sharon completed her training at the school and became a certified Liliedahl Fine Art Instructor. She teaches locally and in her

home studio, as well as nationally at workshops, seminars, and conventions. In the field of art, Michael McKee is largely self-taught and has cultivated his talents through practice and observation. His subjects of choice are animals and landscapes, and his medium of choice is acrylic. He has attended art workshops featuring some of the best wildlife artists in the business, including Robert Bateman, Terry Isaac, and Rod Frederick, and his works have won Best of Show and First Place Awards in local art shows. McKee is a native Tennessean and has been a member of the Tennessee Artists Association since 1992. Connections by Renee Suich in the Display Case Re ne e Sui c h creates mixed media art including collages inspired by nature, history, and the energy that surrounds us all. Early years spent in design were furRenee Suich ther fostered by time spent working at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Her work has been referred to as “Heritage Collage,” as she incorporates vintage imagery in a contemporary composition. “My vision starts with a story that I want to share,” said Suich. “I then use layers of my own artist-made altered paper, natural objects, and painting.” Suich now resides in East Tennessee and enjoys experimenting with new media, including encaustic work. Different mediums, like encaustic work, allow her to explore color and texture in a new way. Every piece becomes a new challenge. The Enlightened and Lost by Kat Lewis on the North Wall Kat Lewis is an East Tennessee native who grew up in Andersonville. She studied art at the University o f Te n n e s s e e Knoxville, as well as Pellissippi Kat Lewis State Community College. She has previously worked with oil and acrylic mediums. She currently resides in Knoxville as a mother and hairstylist. Kat will display a collection of works that illustrate dreams, visions, and stories of spiritual awakening and enlightenment. These

illustrations of enlightenment are through the artist’s perspective, as well as shared experiences from others. These are experiences that go beyond the tangible, physical realm in order to touch the soul and create a new state of mind.

Owen Weston Barbara West Portrait Group in the Atrium The original art group was formed in 2001 by a wonderful person named Barbara West. When she died, the group decided to continue meeting in her name. Members have come from various parts of the U.S. and other countries, as well as from Tennessee. Their list of occupations is amazing: Photographers, teachers, architects, doctors, nurses, scientists, homemakers, and artists, to name just a few. Many are just starting to explore art but range all the way up to professional artists and use a variety of media. Although the common thread is art, the group tries to provide a strong sense of community – an important gift as they move through life. The exhibition includes work by Sandra Abraham, Sandy Armel, Carrie Ellen Barnes, Debbie Barnes, Beverly Burdette, Shannon Duggan, Nancy Erickson, Barbara Gray, Tony Kampwerth, Steve Romer, Bob Weir, Owen Weston, and others. The exhibitions are on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. Exhibition hours are Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm. F YOU ARE NEW to consignment, here’s how to make the most money with your consignment goods. Consignment shopping has been growing in popularity for years, and there is money to be made with these tips on how to make the most of your consignment experience at Next To New. First, check your closet for merchandise that you no longer wear. Ask yourself, “Would I buy this again now?” If you answer no, consider selling these items yourself or donating them to charity. The condition of the item and the original purchase date are key points. You may have a terrific suit with the original tags, but if you bought it 10 years ago, today’s savvy consignment customer will likely pass it by. Before visiting your consignment store, check your items closely for any defects. A “pull here” or a “snag there” reduces your chance for success. Make sure your items are cleaned or dry cleaned as necessary. All clothing should be pressed and presented on hangars. Customers will reward you for your efforts. If you love it, just keep it. This should be an emotion-free business opportunity. Here are 10 important things to consider when consigning: 1. At Next To New, we carry all major mall brands and all boutique designers. 2. Familiarize yourself with the brands the consignment store carries. 3. Consign items in season. 4. Consign best-selling sizes: For women, it’s sizes 10-16. 5. Consign designer accessories in any size. 6. Consign popular brands or classic brands that stand the test of time. 7. Bring a minimum of 20 f lawless items (no missing buttons, stains, cleaned, pressed, and ready to sell) for the store to consider. 8. Accept the truth about the market value of your merchandise. 9. Next To New markets online, on local and cable TV, in magazines, and by email. 10. Our goal is to help you make as much money as possible. Visit Next To New to learn more and to give your closet some much deserved breathing room. Our success is your success! Visit our website at www.nexttonewknox.com Next To New

GP LIVE RECENTLY announced 2017 tour dates for “The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses” in North America and Europe, including Friday, November 17, at the Knoxville Civic Auditorium. Upcoming shows will feature a new piece from the newly released Breath of the Wild, an all-new movement from Skyward Sword, an updated overture, and the return of a classic piece that might just make some wishes come true! Celebrating 30 years of stirring virtual adventure and memorable soundtracks with live orchestral renditions directly approved by franchise producer Eiji Aonuma, The Symphony of the Goddesses is now in its fourth season. The

two-hour concert comes to life with a 57-piece orchestra, 20-person choir, and a re-imagined score that draws from recent and requested Zelda games, including A Link Between Worlds, Twilight Princess, and the remake of Majora’s Mask, while still paying homage to such classics as Ocarina of Time and A Link to the Past. The concert’s five-movement symphony regales ears with Nintendo composer Koji Kondo’s original music, recalling moments of Link conquering dungeons, running through forests, and struggling to decide what color tunic to wear. Don’t Coop Me Up JUST A FEW YEARS AGO,

at the mention of a “doggy day care,” many people would roll their eyes thinking that the whole concept was just a little crazy. Why would anyone pay for someone else to take care of their dog when our four-legged kids could keep themselves entertained at home with toys, water, and food? Today’s dog owners understand the importance of socialization. Doggy play dates provide the entertainment and outdoor exercise your dog craves and is a place where your dog makes friends, romps, plays, and receives plenty of love and attention in a safe and secure environment where they are paired with other dogs of like size and personalities. Dogs are “pack” animals by nature, and day care encourages them to socialize and play with other dogs in a way that is natural for them, which keeps them active and healthy. Besides, who wants to be cooped up during beautiful weather? Play dates are important to dogs, as they provide a mental break, physical activity, less boredom, and diminish destructive behavior like chewing. At Ms. C’s, many owners appreciate what a pleasure it is to pick up

time I arrived in Knoxville, I knew I had come home. The warm humidity’s embrace, the smell of cut grass and flowers, the symphony of birds and bugs, and the bright green everywhere I looked; nature hits all my senses, and I fell in love! Starting a Gentle Barn in this environment to be home to rescued animals and host to atrisk children was such a delight. Our horses and cows enjoy their big pastures, the pigs lounge in their wallows, and the chickens chase bugs and nap in the shade. It is definitely the life we wanted to give our animals to make up for the abuse and neglect they have suffered. And when the children come from schools and foster homes alike, they take in the wide open spaces, embrace the animals, and understand that the world is full of infinite possibilities. We have been renting for the last two years,

but it’s time for us to find a larger forever home for our rescued animals and our programs for children. We love Knoxville and want to stay near UT and all our precious volunteers, staff, and guests who have become family. We are looking for 25 acres or more in Knoxville. If you or anyone you know has land to donate to help animals and children and get a tax write-off, please email us right away at infotn@gentlebarn.org or please share. Thank you for helping us save even

more animals and give hope and inspiration to even more children and adults! In the meantime, come visit us on Saturdays from 11 am to 1 pm and hug the cows, feed the horses, hold the chickens, and give the pigs tummy rubs. For tickets, directions, and more information, visit www.gentlebarn.org.

Could a 401(k) Plan Actually Lower Your Taxes?

BY JUSTIN GOODBRE AD, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PL ANNER™

I

F YOU PARTICIPATE in a 401(k),

you’re among millions who utilize this option for retirement planning. These plans are great for stocking away pre-tax dollars to fund your lifestyle once you leave your job. However, a properly planned 401(k) can be an excellent benefit for a business owner as well. Here’s why. We recently met with a small business client, along with their CPA, who produces around $2 1/2 million in gross revenue a year. The owners, a husband and wife team, each earn $75,000 a year in W-2 wages, and the business saw a profit of just over $297,000, which is split 50/50 between them. They’re frugal with their money, carrying no debt and spending roughly $6,000 a month on living expenses. This is the key to their success. They’re making almost $450,000 a year in taxable income. Before they incorporated 401(k) planning into their business model,

it wasn’t unusual for them get tax bills ranging from $150,000 to $180,000 a year. Now, with the plan in place, their combined tax bill was $63,000. We placed $106,000 of their income into the plan. Utilizing employee contributions, safe harbor contributions, and profit sharing contributions, we amassed huge savings for these business owners. The cost of implementing this 401(k) plan? Just $3,000. Their employee contributions combined with the employee portion of the profit sharing contributions totaled $15,000. So for just $18,000 in cost to them, we essentially cut their tax bill by more than half. In doing this, the couple not only saved money on their taxes, but they helped their employees begin making a plan for future as well. As with anything, each situation is unique; however, with the current Department of Labor rules in flux, one of the actions we’re taking at Heritage Investors to help business owners in our East Tennessee community is offering a COMPLIMENTARY 401(k)

review. If your company offers a 401(k), SEP, or SIMPLE plan, we want to help. If you’d like to see how financial planning could benefit you and your business, give us a call. Now is the time to review your planning to see if you’ll qualify for extra tax savings in 2017. With proper planning, we may be able to create some added tax deductions for 2016. This is certainly one of those situations where working with your CFP® and your CPA could save you thousands.

8th Annual Farragut Food & Wine Festival A FEASTival of Food, Drink & Fun

E

IGHT SUPER-SIZED tents, three generators, one stage complete with band, 60 volunteers, more than two dozen restaurants, and eight purveyors of adult beverages help to create one of the most exciting evenings eagerly anticipated every year. The Farragut Food & Wine Festival has proved to have a regional draw of more than 1,000 food and fun lovers. This event, now being produced for the 8th time, is hosted by the Farragut Business Alliance and Town of Farragut. It will be held on Friday, May 5th, from 6:30 to 9:30 pm on the lawn of Renaissance – Farragut at 12700 Kingston Pike with the help of a dozen business sponsors. Our goal is to showcase Farragut’s culinary arts. “The festival was created to draw attention to our eateries,” said Stephen Krempasky, Farragut Business Alliance’s new Executive Director. “From hometown bakeries to fourstar experiences, it is a showcase of ‘best bite’ samples from Farragut’s area restaurants and food providers. Then patrons can pair those

businesses in Farragut and enjoy more!” The popular beer lounge and exclusive “VIB,” or “Very Important Bites,” tents are back this year. New to this year’s event will be live entertainment, featuring The Coveralls. General admission tickets are $30 for adults in advance or $35 at the gate. VIB seats are limited to the first 64 sold and are $75. Admission for children under 12 is $10 in advance or $15 at the gate, and children under 5 are free. Tickets are available at all Knoxville Ticket locations, online at www. knoxvilletickets.com, or by phone at 865656-4444. Tickets will be exchanged on-site for punch cards, giving attendees a record of their samplings throughout the festival night.

BETH HART DISCUSSES FIRE ON THE FLOOR I

B Y R A N DY PAT T E R S O N B O O M E R O C I T Y. C O M

N OUR LAST interview with

Beth in 2015, I said that to say that she is one of the most amazing new female singer/songwriters of the new millennia would be an understatement. After having the privilege of speaking with Beth for a third time, I still hold to that statement. She is one of those people who, when you first chat with her, you feel as if you’ve known her all your life. Warm. Embracing. Open. I’ve since learned that she is all of that and much more. The reason for our recent chat was to discuss her new CD, Fire on the Floor. In our last chat – which was about her last album, Better Than Home – we talked about it being very introspective and even “ministering.” I asked her how she would describe Fire on the Floor. “I couldn’t tell you this the last time I talked to you because Michael Stevens – who was one of the producers – didn’t want me to go on and make another record, because I wanted to make another record right away,” said Beth. “So this album, Fire on the Floor, has been done way before my last talk with you. So when I did New York for that week for Better Than Home, as soon as I got home – before Better Than Home was even mixed – I called Ed at the label and said, ‘You gotta let me make another record right now or I’m probably never going to go back into the studio.’ And he 32

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE April 2017

said, ‘Why? What’s wrong?’ and I said, 'The reason that I’m calling you is that it was such a painful experience watching Michael be so sick for all that time.’ You know, he ended up dying. And he was only 47 when he died. All that time seeing him go through that – that poor man! This was so healing for me. It really helped me get through that.” When asked which song seems to resonate with fans the most, Beth shared, “Good Day to Cry and Fire on the Floor, so far. But also all the promoters and the radio people really love Jazzman. But it seems that with the audience, they’re really responding to Jazzman but the most to Fire on the Floor. Definitely number one – and Good Day to Cry.” During our last conversation, Beth had indicated that she wanted to be on the road a lot less and focus on living healthier. When I asked how that worked out for her, she laughed and said, “It’s so funny. As soon as I put my foot down and said, ‘Okay. Seven months on the road, max, so that I can have more time at home, be a wife to my husband’ – like I told you about the last time we talked – so I can write more and all that. As soon as I laid that boundary, now I want to be on the road more. As soon as I make a decision that I want to do something, my head says, ‘Oh! I want to do something else!’ I just can’t even keep up with myself! It’s so funny. It’s so

weird. I’m so weird.” And what is on Beth’s radar for the rest of the year? “You know, what I’m really into right now is speaking,” she said. “I’m having so much fun and am so passionate about it. I’m having a lot of ideas with that. I’m putting a lot of effort into that. I’ve really, really been studying a lot with my vocal coach, Bob. I’m with him off and on since I was 16. So I really feel like this past year I’ve grown a lot as a singer. I’m looking forward to doing that live and using some of the techniques that he’s taught me. Things just to be stronger and healthier and trying new ways of approaching songs. I’m also really looking forward to us doing more work here in the states, which is really exciting for me. And then we’re also going to India for the first time. We’re going to do a couple of shows there, so I’m looking forward to that.” Beth also spoke of other projects that can’t be shared now. However, you can be among the first to know about them (as well as other Beth Hart news) before the rest of the world knows by signing up for her newsletter at www.BethHart.com. Garage Flooring: Make Sure It’s Durable

G

ARAGE REMODELING is cur-

rently the fastest growing segment of the home improvement industry. It’s a separate room – and often the largest room in the house – that is not only a place to park a car, but can be used for various purposes: A workshop, warehouse, kids’ toy storage, or simply a place to hangout. To give a garage a finished look and make it a more user-friendly space that’s easy to clean, renovations usually include a floor coating. While there are a few flooring options, the decision usually comes down to a choice between a standard epoxy or PremierOne’s polyurea coating, developed and installed by PremierGarage. Do-it-yourself epoxy kits are widely available and easy to work with. The down side is many things can go wrong while applying the coating. The epoxy may not set properly or have a weak bond to the concrete, and it takes a long time for the epoxy to dry and bond to the floor. And while the cost of epoxy is initially less expensive, epoxy also quickly delaminates when a vehicle’s hot tires bond to the surface and peels it away from the concrete. “There have been many improvements in coating technology during the past 20

PremierGarage floor coatings come in dozens of colors to match your style or exterior decor. Pictured is Iced Coffee.

years, and the preferred garage flooring is our polyurea coating,” explained Brain Falls, co-owner of PremierGarage of Knoxville. “Polyurea is a hard wearing coating that’s widely specified in commercial settings where failure is not an option and floors are designed to last the test of time.”

For the longest lasting concrete floor coating in the market, company technicians diamond-grind the floor to the ideal surface condition to achieve a permanent chemical bond. Other primary benefits of PremierGarage’s professionally installed flooring coating instead of epoxy is: » Superior finish that cures two times harder, eliminating unsightly marks, peeling, or blistering from hot tires and abrasions » Chemical, UV, stain, and slip-resistant » Commercial-grade product that is guaranteed for 10 years » Easy to clean Available in a variety of colors, the flooring system is also perfect for concrete flooring in basements, front porches, and retail stores. Call PremierGarage and discover the affordability of transforming your garage floor. Home really does begin in the garage!

F YOU’RE in the process of spring cleaning your home, don’t neglect your Oriental rugs. They’ve experienced a great deal of use this winter from wet, wintry mix covered shoes, including shoes contaminated with salt used on sidewalks and driveways. And no, simple vacuuming will not remove these accumulate contaminants, which can actually damage your rug’s natural fibers and organic dyes. Genuine, Oriental rug washing is the only proven way to thoroughly clean your home’s valuable rugs, and if you’re a pet owner, rug washing is an absolute necessity. Most Oriental rug customers think that the first goal of Oriental rug washing is to “clean” their rugs. The first goal should be to “safely” wash their rugs. Let me explain. Oriental rugs are far different from their wall-towall cousins. Oriental rugs are hand-woven using natural fibers and organic dyes, including, believe it or not, tea and vegetable dyes. While beautiful to admire, Oriental rugs cannot be cleaned using today’s conventional carpet cleaning methods. These conventional cleaning systems can actually permanently damage your valuable rugs. At Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning ’s West Knoxville-based Oriental rug washing boutique, we pamper your rugs by using our proprietary 11-step Oriental rug washing process, which assures you of both a thoroughly and safely cleaned rug. If you have not already done so, I encourage you to visit us online at www.superiorofknoxville.com and view our informative video to discover for yourself the Superior of Knoxville Oriental rug washing advantage. Why Not Really Enjoy Your Home’s Outdoor Living Spaces This Year?

G

ET READY to let the great out-of-

doors in! The sun is getting stronger, and the days are getting longer. Before you know it, summer will be here, and with it will come the endless ways to have fun right in your own backyard. But are you really enjoying your outdoor living spaces to their full potential? If your outdoor space does not include retractable screen solutions, the answer is most likely no. Here’s why. Homeowners across the country are making significant investments in the design and creation of outdoor “rooms,” including porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanentlyinstalled grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful accent lighting, and even weatherproof artwork. However, the hot afternoon sun and biting insects often keep homeowners and their guests from enjoying their new outdoor spaces to their full potential. Retractable screens provide an answer to this dilemma. By combing indoor and outdoor spaces, these screen solutions enhance and promote the outdoor living experience, allowing people to enjoy the out-of-doors during hot summer days while extending the amount of time they can spend on patios and decks, where biting insects can become a nuisance in the evenings. Large, motorized screens are the perfect solution for blending function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of your home, thereby remaining truly hidden when fully retracted. And the best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish your home’s views or esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many of these retractable screen solutions can be incorporated into virtually any architectural style. Increasing in popularity are different custom color and wood grain finishes that help to blend your screens into your existing interior or exterior color schemes. Also, the screens can be programmed to lower and retract with sun and wind sensors and can be connected to your home’s general building automation system, allowing the screens to come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection is needed. For more information about retractable screen options that will allow you and your family to fully enjoy your home’s outdoor living spaces this year, visit www.tennesseescreens.com.

lighting design can turn your house into a showcase just as quickly as poor lighting design will reduce it to little more than an eyesore. Curb appeal isn’t just for daylight hours. If you spend your entire landscaping budget on plants and flowers, you only have curb appeal for half the time! Good landscape lighting design should draw attention to the architectural details you fell in love with when you purchased your home and highlight features in your landscape design, bringing beauty and drama to your yard, all while increasing the value of your home. Think of your home’s lighting as a nightscape. A nightscape is like painting with light to show the beauty of your home. Quite often this could show off features that aren’t as prominent during the day but are captivating at night – as if revealing your home’s secrets. Lighting your home correctly will create two separate and beautiful landscapes – one a dayscape and the other your nightscape, each with their own character. Ever y home has its own persona lity and unique features. A landscape lighting designer can show you how to highlight and help you decide which approach to take in your landscape lighting design. A

minimalist design uses landscape lights to highlight your house and walkways in an understated way, whereas a statement approach uses more lights to highlight features with a dramatic effect. A balanced approach shows off the symmetry in the house or plantings. If you are mainly concerned with safety, you could take a safety approach and focus only on landscape lights for security. Many people choose a more natural approach that uses landscape lighting to emulate the way the moonlight dances through the trees. A professional landscape lighting designer can help you

see which approach would work best for your nightscape. If you’re considering outdoor lighting, I invite you to discover why Lighthouse Outdoor Lighting is East Tennessee’s first choice in exterior lighting. Call 865-484-4011 today or visit us at www.lighthouse-lights.com.

Once is All It Takes

Are you frustrated because your floors look dingy no matter how often you clean them? Don’t feel bad. It’s not your fault! VER TIME, dirt and contami-

nants are absorbed into the porous surfaces of your floors, which dull tiles and cause grout to darken. When you clean your floors with a mop, you are only able to penetrate the uppermost layer, leaving nasty stuff to fester underneath. Scrubbing has a tendency to push soil deeper into the floor, causing unsightly staining and permanent darkening. Traditional cleaning methods simply aren’t able to extract grime that is embedded in your surfaces. It takes a combination of high heat (to open the pores in your floor), high suction, and pressure, as well as a quality emulsifier, to adequately remove all the junk under the surface. Only the perfect combination of pressure, heat, and extraction will effectively remove all foreign contaminants from hard surfaces, leaving them spotlessly clean and sanitized.

Once your floors have been redeemed to their former beauty, you may choose to seal them. Surface Doc’s sealer provides the ultimate protection for most hard surfaces, including natural stone floors and countertops, tile and grout, and many others. Since the molecules penetrate deep into porous materials, they bond permanently together, thus creating a deep barrier of protection. This process protects your floors and hard surfaces from staining, efflorescence, cleaning chemicals, traffic, sunlight, and even high pressure hosing. Using Surface Doc’s lifetime-guaranteed sealer ensures that no nasty grime will ever darken your floors again. HOMEOWNERS

know what’s required to replace your home’s tub, countertop, vanity top, or tiled area. But fewer homeowners are familiar with the cost-effective alternative commonly known as resurfacing! When you replace an existing tub, countertop, or tiled area, demolition occurs first before these items can be replaced. This option is both time consuming and expensive. When you resurface, you apply a new, high-quality, industrial grade finish on your existing surfaces at a fraction of the time and at a fraction of the cost! At Resurfacing Solutions, we offer homeowners the same quality finish that comes with a new countertop, tub, or tiled area, but at a 60-70% savings. Also, most work can be performed in just one day. Plus all of our work is backed by our five year warranty. If you’re considering updating your home’s kitchen or baths, I think you’ll enjoy reading what our most recent customers have said about Resurfacing Solutions: “We had old laminate, almond colored counters, and now we have counters that look like granite. I highly recommend Resurfacing Solutions for a reasonably priced way to have new looking counters! They were on time for our free estimate and on time for the work day and

BEFORE

finished job on time.” – L.S. in West Knoxville “Thank you guys! Highly recommended. Prompt and professional. Stripped and resurfaced my bathtub. Looks brand new! Couldn’t be happier with the results!” – P.H. in Maryville I invite you to call us to discover just how much time and money you can save, as well as how you can have the updated kitchen and/or bath you’ve been dreaming of. Here are some examples of how much money you can save: » Kitchen countertops – Starting at $550 (Approx. 35 sq ft) » Standard tub/shower stall – Starting at $475 » Tub and tiled surround – Starting at $525 » Bathroom vanity tops – Starting at $195 (5 Lf or less) » Tiled bathroom walls – Starting at $650 (Varies with size) Resurfacing Solutions also offers a bathtub repair service with our bathtub resurfacing

AFTER

service. If your tub is chipped, cracked, or leaking from a stress fracture or from previous damage, we can repair those problem areas for you. There’s absolutely no need to replace your bathtub. Why not let us put our experience and expertise to work for you to repair and refinish your home’s tub while eliminating the need for demolition and saving you money? T SHAE DESIGN STUDIO,

we specialize in kitchen and bathroom design and carry 12 lines of solid wood cabinetry. We also have a furniture showroom with more than 40 different lines of furniture, rugs, lighting, and accessories that is located off of Kingston Pike near Turkey Creek. We offer renovation and interior styling services, which can be anything from paint color consults to lighting and furniture selection. Furniture and lighting selection would be based on the items we offer in our showroom, but we have quite a few options through the lines that we carry and can order. With renovation design, we have the ability to create several different kitchen and bathroom configurations in our design software. When it comes to updating your space, nothing is more helpful than the power of visualization! At Shae Design Studio, we create amazing kitchen and bath designs

BEFORE for ou r cl ients using 3D software. The process beg ins w ith us coming out to a client’s home to take measurements of the space and discuss what is and isn’t working. We take that information back to the studio and draw up some design options in the software. The client comes in to view their options, and we discuss the opportunities we can create in their new space! It’s incredibly helpful to see our vision come to life before the renovation even begins! After we have gone through the designs and settled on the one that works best, we re-measure the space and order cabinetry. Our cabinetry prices are competitive and

come with the added value of the 3D design ser v ice. Clients who use us for their cabinetry can also purchase desig n time for help with tile, flooring, lighting, paint colors, and any other things they might need help with. They also receive free hardware and a discounted AFTER rate for desig n ti me should they need our help choosing the best finishes for them. Clients pair with contractors and begin construction! The timeline ca n va r y depending on the size of the project, but it feels amazing to see the renovation completed! Homeowners get to enjoy living in a new space designed specifically for them and their needs. If you’re curious about updating your space, give us a call or stop by our studio today. We would love to design an amazing kitchen or bath to make your space work better for you!

UGS ARE JUST as ready as we are to become more active with the warmer weather! Here’s why you need the pest professionals at Dayton’s to treat your home. Carpenter bees: Resembling bumble bees, the round holes carpenter bees make in exterior wood look like they have been made with a drill. Simply plugging the holes won’t get rid of them, for they will just drill new holes somewhere else. Favorite places include wood decks or porches, roof eaves, trim, railings, siding, outdoor furniture, and fences. Ants: The key to successful ant control is to treat the source of the ants. Just spraying them where you see them is not effective, for they will still keep coming back into your home from the outside. Did you know that the largest part of an ant colony is found underground? Termites: Hiding in out-of-the-way places, such as behind walls and underneath flooring, termites can cause tremendous structural damage that you can’t readily see. Dayton’s termite inspections are FREE, and their professionals have expertise in spotting signs of a potential termite problem. An added convenience for real estate sales is that Dayton Hylton is a licensed realtor and can access a lockbox without anyone having to be home for a termite inspection. Ladybugs, stink bugs, box elder bugs, kudzu bugs, paper wasps: They have hibernated in your home all winter and will now be emerging in large numbers to annoy you! New customers will receive $25 OFF an initial pest control treatment with an annual contract and $150 OFF Termidor® H•P termite treatment. Other services provided by Dayton’s include convenient perimeter pest control, radon testing and mitigation, CleanSpace® Crawl Space Encapsulation, monthly/quarterly/one-time pest control services, pest control for bed bugs/rodents/ wasps/bees, fungicide/moldicide treatments, and VA/FHA termite inspections. April in the Garden BY LISA GRUGIN

SOM E

SPRIN GS I think Mother Nature needs medication. Her moods are irregular, and she has a nasty sense of humor! She gives us 80 degrees in February, and after things leaf out and start blooming, she turns around and sends the temperature into the low 20s in March (or sometimes April). If you’ve lived here as long as I have, you’ve seen this before. That’s why I smile when customers ask me in March (or February) if I think winter is over. No. Our average last frost is around April 16th. If you’re a gambler and don’t mind rolling the dice on your plants, go ahead and plant those warm season annuals and vegetables. If you don’t want to run the risk of losing it all, be patient. Since Mother Nature’s mood was particularly bad this year and she decided to give us a late blast of severe cold, the first thing I’m going to talk about is dealing with the damage that has been done. Most of us have at least a couple of plants in our yards that got zapped. Any plants with new growth, anything blooming, anything that had broken dormancy, and anything tender

is likely to be showing damage. I know that some of you want to go out and start cutting things back or even pulling plants out, but you really need to chill for a couple of weeks. Let your plants figure out what was irreparably damaged and what wasn’t. Here are a few hints. » Established plants that are zone hardy here are pretty resilient. Don’t be too quick to give up on them. By early April, you’ll be able to tell what was actually killed, and then you can go out with your pruners and your loppers and do some judicious pruning. You still need to follow the pruning guidelines, so give us a call or stop by if you need instructions. » Clean up perennials that turned to mush, but don’t pull them up! Even if they were killed to the ground, they are likely to re-emerge later. » If you planted annuals or tender vegetables, you learned a lesson on waiting until the average last frost date to plant. » Yes, we lost some blooms. Yes, fruit trees may not bear. Yes, our spring

will be less spectacular. But there isn’t a darn thing we can do about it, and I learned a long time ago not to worry about things I can’t change anyway. Clean up your mess, plant some new flowers, and consider any losses as a chance to try something new! Now let’s move on to the type of things I’m usually telling you to do in April. » Guess what wasn’t killed by the freeze… weeds! You’re going to need to pull or spray them to get the upper hand before they take over your yard. Please read the instructions on your herbicide before you start spraying. I’ve heard many horror stories from people who have thought they were using a selective product, only to discover it was non-selective after the entire lawn turned brown. We also hear from those who have sprayed on a windy day and wiped out their neighbor’s (or their wife’s) favorite shrubs, or those who have used their herbicide sprayer to apply fungicide or insecticide, only to discover that they hadn’t cleaned it out as well as they thought they had! » Once you get the weeds gone, apply a pre-emergent to make your life easier. Do not apply a pre-emergent before you plant seeds, however! Preen doesn’t know a weed seed from a flower seed and won’t allow either to germinate. » Finish getting your beds ready by working up the soil and amending it. » Containers should be dumped after a couple of years and fresh potting soil put back in. » You can plant trees, shrubs, cold tolerant perennials, and cole crops such as broccoli, cabbage, lettuce, etc. If you don’t know if you should plant something now, ask us. That’s what we are here for. » Perennials that get leggy or floppy (that weren’t killed back) should be staked or caged while they’re still small. » Mulch if you haven’t. Three to four inches of mulch will keep moisture and temperature levels more stable if our spring continues to be a wild ride. » Don’t forget the birds! This spring has been hard on them, too. Keep feeders clean and full, birdbaths clean and full, and birdhouses clean so they will be full! We have a great line-up of workshops coming up this month. We also still have trucks arriving weekly – it feels like daily – with new merchandise and plant material. Stop in and see what’s new, and let us help you have a beautiful yard and garden!

UT Gardens Plant of the Month: Flowering Dogwood B Y C E L E S T E L U C K E Y S C OT T, U T E X T E N S I O N AG E N T, M A D I S O N C O U N T Y

A

S A C H I L D , the arrival of

flowering dogwood, along with forsythia and quince, marked the beginning of wonderful things to come. Even with Easter’s wandering date from year to year, I somehow convinced myself that Easter would come soon with bright white flowering dogwood and warmer days would not be far behind. For me, there is nostalgia and a serene beauty in a woodland dappled with dogwood lying in wait for the flush of spring to arrive. There is much history and folklore behind Cornus florida from the Native Americans’ belief of ‘little dogwood people’ who served as protectors and guardians, to legend of its use in the crucifixion, and even its historical use as a topical medicine. However, there are some things we know to be fact. First, dogwood is native to Tennessee. The fourpetaled blooms (usually white or a pale pink, but sometimes a deeper pink to nearly red) are not petals at all. They are actually scales that become showy bracts. The flowering dogwood is truly a plant that adds color and interest to any landscape during all seasons. Not only do we treasure the blooms in spring, but we appreciate its low-branched canopy in summer, its vibrant orange, yellow, and reddish-purple foliage in the fall, and the plant’s bright red berries in winter. Though beautiful, this tree also trends toward practicality by providing winter habitat and food sources for more than 40 bird species. With the various growth habits that are available, dogwood can be used with great success as a specimen planted near structures or in groupings in the forefront of dark evergreen foliage for a real kick of contrast. Flowering dogwood performs well in the understory of larger trees, but it can thrive in sunnier locations. First, attempt to mimic the soil environment of the forest which they love. They are happiest in acidic, welldrained sites. Next, providing leafy compost, mulching the root zone for cooling effects, and planting specimens a bit high to improve air exchange will improve your likeliness of success. Although establishing a new planting can be tricky, these tips can help improve your odds. The flowering dogwood is susceptible to several pests including dogwood borer, dogwood anthracnose, as well as powdery mildew and other leaf spots. However, by selecting the proper planting location, we can reduce stress, which can alleviate many of these pests. Photo by A. Windham, courtesy UTIA

Selecting resistant cultivars is also recommended. The Appalachian series of dogwood introduced by researchers with the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture includes selections bred for resistance to powdery mildew, as well as dogwood anthracnose. Several selections are easily found in garden shops and at nurseries, and they can be viewed in the landscape at both the UT Gardens, Knoxville, and the UT Gardens, Jackson. Among the most popular are: » ‘Appalachian Spring’: Dogwood anthracnose resistant, white. (UT Gardens, Knoxville & Jackson) » ‘Appalachian Joy’: Powdery mildew resistant, white, most recent release. (UT Gardens, Knoxville) » ‘Karen’s Appalachian Blush’: Some powdery mildew resistance, white edged in pink. (UT Gardens, Knoxville) » ‘Kay’s Appalachian Mist’: Powdery mildew resistant, white, good flowering on young trees. (UT Gardens, Knoxville) » ‘Jean’s Appalachian Snow’: Powdery mildew resistant, white. (UT Gardens, Knoxville) At the UT Gardens, Crossville, you’ll find selections of Cornus kousa on display in the Discovery Gardens, but we will save that species for another month! For more information about dogwood, check out the UT publication PB1670, Dogwoods for American Gardens, which is available online at www.extension.tennessee.edu. Just search for the publication by number. The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are

part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The Gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit www.ag.tennessee.edu/utg.

Preservationist Stories: The Lacy Legacy Lives on in Lenoir City BY DIANE POWELL

O

NE BLOCK

off the main intersection of downtown Lenoir City, William Nelson Lacy, Jr. built a small hotel in 1926. He and his wife and their four children operated The Lacy Hotel and restaurant for almost five decades. The building changed owners through the years, and it became a restaurant frequented by Lenoir City residents that was known as “the place to eat on Sunday after church.” Locals remember hosting parties, weddings, and community meetings there. In the mid‘90s, Brad Allen purchased the building for his audio business and rented some of the rooms as private offices. During this time, downtown began declining, and Lenoir City residents mostly forgot about the hotel. Almost three years ago my husband and I moved to Lenoir City and purchased a historic building in downtown that had been donated to Knox Heritage. We saw the potential of the small town and began renovating our building. Each day as I drove to work I found myself admiring The Lacy Hotel and wondering what was inside. I chased down the owner and found that he was ready to sell. As soon as we walked through the front door, I knew I wanted to buy this wonderful old hotel. The Lacy was a typical arts and crafts design with eight foot French doors and large glass transoms that had never been painted, pine floors on both levels, 12 foot ceilings, and large metal paned windows. I could see its beauty even though all the surfaces were thoroughly covered with years of dirt, grime, and more cobwebs than I’d ever seen. Even though it was built almost a hundred years ago, you can truly feel what it means when people say “they don’t build them like they used to.” The floors were solid and didn’t creak. The stairs and handrails were still perfect. In the basement, we could see the 2x12 joists and the intact exposed brick walls. The first floor was the public space that featured a reception foyer, a large dining area, a kitchen, and a small dining room with a fireplace. Upstairs still maintained the original hotel layout with eight bedrooms and four-and-a-half bathrooms. As I walked through, I thought, “I know I can make it special again, but what am I going to do with this much space?” I had visions of a beautiful home décor store that I enjoyed visiting but knew it would be hard to find the right proprietor.

56

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE April 2017

Two days after we agreed to purchase The Lacy, the owner of the store that I was thinking about called saying she was looking for store space in Lenoir City. Yes! We purchased the building in late July and immediately jumped into deep cleaning and tearing out anything that wasn’t original. Because parts of the building still had the original knob and tube wiring, we rewired and upgraded the electrical service. The Lacy was in dire need of a facelift, so we changed out windows, painted the walls and ceilings, cleaned the woodwork, updated the bathroom, and created a welcoming front entrance. In December, Deborah Taylor opened The Lacy Fine Furnishings, Antiques and Gifts. I’m so excited to see customers come into The Lacy that have grown up in Lenoir City and haven’t seen this beautiful building until now. Many have told me that they remember coming to the hotel as a child, and now they are so pleased to see it all restored and open to the public. Visitors are enchanted by the structure as soon as they enter the spacious foyer and see the tall doors and original dark stained arts and crafts style staircase leading to the second floor. The hotel’s dining area is a large 25x35 foot space that is now filled with select antiques, painted dining tables, and farmhouse design accessories. The second floor rooms feature hand-crafted lighting fixtures, clothing, and hand-painted furniture by Jackie Vance. Deborah Taylor has a distinct, creative style that carefully mixes antiques with new furnishings and accessories to create rooms that meet the needs of today’s families. The

most often heard comment from customers is that they want to move in and live in the store! On the day after Christmas, a woman named Nancy Cavett came into the store and introduced herself as the granddaughter of William Lacy, Jr. She shared how she now lives in Florida but always drives by The Lacy during family visits and through the years has been saddened by its outward deterioration and neglect. But this year was different, and she was delighted to see The Lacy beautiful again. She has shared stories and pictures of the Lacy family, and Deborah and I will proudly display the photographs in The Lacy. During the past couple of years, downtown Lenoir City has begun to make a comeback. Several new stores have opened, and downtown is experiencing shoppers once again. It is a thrill to be a part of this revitalization. There is such a profound satisfaction in bringing a once loved building back to life and seeing the enjoyment and appreciation on visitors’ faces. Lenoir City residents can be proud of The Lacy hotel and be grateful to W N Lacy, Jr. for building such a fine structure for us to enjoy almost a century later. The East Tennessee Preservation Alliance works to preserve the structures and places with historic or cultural significance in Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Hamblen, Jefferson, Knox, Loudon, Monroe, Morgan, Roane, Scott, Sevier, and Union counties. ETPA partners with Knox Heritage to serve as the regional arm for preservation activities in these 16 counties.

Contemporary Christian hit makers highlight this day-long celebration. Area student ministries should plan to cap off the summer with this energizing event. One of the most beautiful times of the year is autumn in the Great Smoky Mountains. The park offers extended hours, until 9 pm each night,

responsibilities faced by small business owners are more challenging than establishing prices for your company’s products and services. For many entrepreneurs, it’s a shot in the dark. Others may rely on competitive price comparisons within their marketplace, or perhaps your franchise or dealer network provide pricing recommendations. Regardless of how you arrive at your company’s pricing structure, pricing should be regarded as both a short- and long-term strategy designed to be a driver of both sales and high margin profitability. Here are some important points to keep in mind when establishing your pricing strategy: » Being busy does not equate to being profitable. » Closing on 100% of your proposals likely means that your prices are far too low. » Price gouging will likely only attract additional competitors into your marketplace, which will result in lower

If the perceived value the customer receives from your products and services far exceeds their actual cost of the product, your price is likely too low. Pricing is more of an art than a science, and many of us lack the prerequisite skills or experience needed to create a comprehensive pricing strategy. Regardless, the responsibility is yours. Familiarize yourself not only with your competitors’ pricing but, more importantly, the perceived value they offer customers.

Don’t rely entirely on the pricing models provided by a franchise or dealer who may be unfamiliar with your local marketplace. Are you viewed merely as a commodity or as a company whose extra services are perceived as extremely valuable, perhaps even indispensable, to a client? It is absolutely imperative that you clearly articulate to every potential customer the real value of the services or products that you offer if you are to succeed. Customers will select the company with the higher actual price, provided that the perceived value they receive is greater. And one final thing. An estimated 20% to 30% of all customers are low price shoppers. Avoid them. This is the commodity marketplace that will leave you broke.

as a stayat-home mom and then as a substitute teacher, Heather Palmer knew it was time to pursue a career in the school library. She made the right choice – she’s been named Knox County’s Teacher of the Year for elementary grades. “I love sharing the gift of reading with children and providing a selection of literature and text to satisfy curiosity and curriculum,” said Palmer, the librarian at Dogwood Elementary School. “I thought at first I would want to be a high school librarian, but I have fallen in love with elementary school.” Palmer has been at Dogwood for eight years. She has a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Purdue University and a master’s in informational sciences from the University of Tennessee. “Dogwood Elementary is such a wonderful community of educators, students, and families who care about the whole child,” said Palmer. “We all support each other and put the students first. I am supported when I want to try crazy things, like starting a LEGO robotics team, because my colleagues know these experiences will only help our students.” 64

Every class covers language arts or research lessons from both fiction and nonfiction books, which incorporates with the students’ classroom lessons. Students also get to check out books and interact with STEM activity stations in the library. After school Palmer tutors students, and in the spring, she coaches a robotics team. “One of the biggest challenges I face is funding,” she said. “The budget for books that we receive can only go so far. STEM equipment costs a great deal of money. I know the crunch is felt everywhere. I work hard planning book fairs and securing donations to keep our collection current and relevant. “Another challenge is finding the right balance for my students,” she continued. “I may not always know what they are dealing with at home; they may not always be prepared for class. You’re also encouraged to search for waste in your family budget, and divert these savings into your 401(k) plan. » Meet your employer’s contribution match. Don’t leave any money on the table. Employees are encouraged to take full advantage of employer matching. I met with an individual recently who for 30 years had only invested 2% of their earnings to their employer’s pension plan despite the fact that their employer matched up to 5%. Name one investment where you can earn a 100% return instantaneously. Be sure to take advantage of your employer’s contribution match if it’s available. The great news is there’s pending legislation where employees will be automatically enrolled in their employer’s pension plans, which will make opting out more difficult. » Consider investing in mutual funds that invest in stocks. Historically the best performing investment vehicle for retirement investments has been equities. If you’re young, consider investing aggressively, as market f luctuations will balance out over time. Invest for the long term. » Don’t cash out of your employer pension plan when changing jobs. Always roll over your former employer’s pension into a new 401(k) or IRA. Avoid the temptation cash out borrow from your 401(k). Don’t compromise your future. Does Your Family Read? B Y W E N DY FAU L K N E R

T

HE PASSION for curling up with a good book and getting lost in a story is dwindling. People prefer to watch movies and television shows, play video games, and surf the Internet. Before technology infiltrated society, reading was a primary leisure activity. Fast forward to today and reports tell us that roughly 25% of adults do not read even one book a year. If the adults in the home aren’t reading, the chances are slim that the activity will be picked up by the children. This is unfortunate, because reading has benefits for both adults and children that television, computers, and using gadgets simply do not. Active processing, memory, and concentration Watching movies and television is essentially a passive mental process; reading is an active mental process. When you read, you have to think for yourself. You have to reason things out and paint the pictures of scenes and characters in your mind. Reading requires you to tap into your imagination. Reading also helps to strengthen and

improve memory functions. When you read, you have to remember characters, facts, details, themes, and more. This is different than watching movies or television shows that begin and end in one sitting. People rarely complete a book in one sitting. Remembering the details of a book and picking it back up to continue the story requires active mental processing and it strengthens memory. When you read books, concentration and the ability to focus can improve in many areas of life. To read a book, you must concentrate and focus for extended periods of time. This is something that many in today’s society are not used to doing. With emails, magazines, blog posts, text messaging, and other short chunks of information, people are not required to sit still, stay focused, concentrate, and become absorbed for very long. Reading requires the opposite. By reading, people learn how to concentrate and focus. No cost family bonding Reading is a very inexpensive thing to do. In fact, you can read without spending any money at all. Libraries are packed full of

books. There are enough books in a library to keep your family supplied with books for life, and it won’t cost you a cent. If you have children, reading books together can strengthen relationship bonds. It also works to instill a love of reading and learning into children. So instead of popping in a video for children to watch, take 15-20 minutes out of each day to snuggle up together and read a book. Reading with children is relaxing, and it is good clean fun. Not only will it make for good memories for both you and the children, reading books teaches children they don’t have to be plugged in to something to be entertained. Give Your Children the Gift of the Pen

H

ELLO FRIENDS, happy spring! Let’s get right to it. If you’re like me, I get really excited when I open the mailbox and find a personal letter, card, or note addressed to me. Because it doesn’t happen often, it’s a real thrill. When I was a girl, I exchanged letters on fun stationery with my cousin, grandmothers, and a few friends. I still have most of these treasured letters, and the memories of this activity are among my fondest from my childhood. Parents, it is such a gift to encourage our children to write letters and cards. Why? Because it’s a small way we can help our children serve and give to others. Children need to have many opportunities to experience the joy that comes from giving and spending a few moments of their

Our children are eager to please, and teaching them while they are young the value of sacrificing a few moments of their time to think of others and ensure that their friends and family feel their love and concern for them is a gift that will bless them for their entire lives. Some of the notes and cards that have meant the most to me throughout the years have come during times of struggle and need. I remember my son’s friend and his mother

bringing us a note of sympathy when our dog died. This kind act endeared us to this family forever. I remember another time when a lady at my church wrote a note to me thanking me for a Sunday School lesson that I had taught and expressing what that lesson had meant to her. I was so touched and of course felt reassurance in my own feelings of inadequacy with my assignment. I hope we can all take the time to put the pen to the paper and express our feelings towards and for our loved ones.

Botox Myths Debunked

OTOX is one of the most popu-

lar cosmetic treatments available. However, there are still a few misconceptions about what it does and doesn’t do and who the best candidates are for the treatment. Here are six myths debunked. MYTH: Botox freezes your face. Some people think that Botox will prevent you from making facial expressions and freezes your face into one position. If done correctly, this is not true. Botox works by blocking signals from your nerves to the muscles, preventing contractions and smoothing out lines. As a trained, board certified dermatologist, Dr. Doppelt can administer Botox that allows wrinkles to soften and relax but still allows you to express a full range of emotions - happiness, surprise, joy, and even anger. MYTH: Botox injections are poison and unsafe. Doctors have been using Botox for a variety of medical and aesthetic reasons for close to two decades. Nearly 6.5 million Botox injections were administered last year alone according to statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, suggesting that this treatment is popular, effective, and safe. When administered correctly, no significant long-term side effects have been reported, even after more than 10 years of regular use. MYTH: Botox is just for wrinkles. In addition to its cosmetic use, Botox is used as a medical treatment for hundreds

of medical conditions, including arthritis, hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating, migraines, TMJ, involuntary movements, and tremors, to name a few. Treating these medical conditions often requires much higher doses of Botox than are used for cosmetic conditions. There’s no denying the therapeutic qualities of this versatile treatment. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports that aesthetic-related Botox use has risen 700% since 2000, indicating that the treatment is an accessible anti-wrinkle solution for a growing number of people from all walks of life. MYTH: If you stop getting Botox, it will make your wrinkles worse. Botox injections typically last three to four months. That means that over time, the relaxed muscles will begin to contract again, returning your facial muscles to their previous positions. Though regular injections will maintain the treatment effects, you can stop receiving Botox at any time without any damage or making wrinkles worse. MYTH: Botox is only for women. More and more men are coming into the office to have Botox treatments. Botox can help to soften a man’s look to give a natural, more youthful appearance. As the business marketplace becomes more competitive, men are looking for something to give them a competitive edge. MYTH: The best time for Botox is when the lines appear.

Matthew B. Doppelt D.O., F.A.O.C.D., F.A.A.D. Board Certified Dermatologist

Not so. Lines and wrinkles are formed by repetitive muscle movements like raising the eyebrows, squinting, and scowling. If you wait until the lines and wrinkles are etched into your skin, it can be more difficult to smooth their appearance. Dr. Doppelt often compares the etched-in lines on the skin to the visible creases that remain in paper after it has been unfolded. By inhibiting muscle contraction, it prevents the folding that causes the lines to appear. Don’t worry if the etched-in lines have already appeared. With continued use of Botox, over time the body will do a good job of repairing them. Also, with repeated Botox injections, the treated muscles will become smaller from disuse. As this happens, patients may find they need less Botox or that the effects seem to last longer. To learn more, give us a call at 865-4748800 or visit www.drdoppelt.com.
