In the Knoxville area, April is dedicated to the dogwoods celebrating those blooms with a month-long festival. Activities for this year’s Dogwood Arts Festival are included in this edition. When spring arrives, I am energized to clean and redecorate the inside and outside of my home. The longer days make working on projects more enjoyable, and East Tennessee has the best spring weather. we say we will do, doing it as scheduled, on time and on budget with as little disruption as possible to customers’ lives at work or home. EK: At CertaPro, you state that you “don’t paint houses – you paint lives” and that you “don’t paint commercial businesses – you paint people’s livelihoods.” How is this approach not only unique, but also important to your customers? Joann: We understand how busy our customers’ lives can be, so we respect and value their time. We know they have hired CertaPro because they want a quality job at a fair price, and they don’t want to have to worry about the project they have hired us to perform. both home and business owners when hiring a contractor is poor communication. How do you overcome this communication challenge with your customers? Jeff: We start by listening to the needs of our customers, consulting with them about their project scope, needs, timing, vision, and budget. We provide detailed written proposals quickly, review it in person with the customer the morning we start the project, provide daily updates to the customer, and at the end, we perform a “pride walk” to ensure the project is 100% complete in their eyes! EK: How do the prices at CertaPro compare to those of your competitors? Joann: We research this regularly and find that our prices are very competitive with every other professional painting contractor. By professional, I mean a company that carries workers’ compensation and liability insurance, a company who has been in business for several years and offers a warranty, a company whose painters go through training to make sure they follow company policies, a company that doesn’t ask for money up front but only at the end of the project when everything is complete and the customer is satisfied. Joann: In addition to interior and exterior painting, we offer pressure washing, drywall removal and installation, drywall repair, concrete staining, wood repair and replacement, stucco repair, knockdown/texturing, wallpaper removal and installation, and small remodel projects. (Bathroom remodel, mud room addition, screen porch or deck additions, and commercial build-out are a few examples.) EK: Contrast your “consultation” proposal method to the “estimate” alternative used by your competition, and tell our readers why this is so important. Jeff: Often our homeowners know they want or need to paint or do repairs but they are unsure of color, scope of work, materials, etc. We listen to what our customers want and work with them to ensure they get what they are looking for, and then we detail it with a written proposal. An estimate is vague, usually just a number, and frequently winds

up in disappointment. EK: What kind of warranty do you offer your customers? Joann: We offer a written warranty both residentially and commercially. More importantly, we ensure we do it right the first time so a customer is not inconvenienced by a warranty issue! EK: What is the best way for prospective new customers to learn more about CertaPro Painters of East Tennessee? Tennessee Pottery Festival I

N ITS SECOND year at the Great

Smoky Mountains Heritage Center, the Tennessee Pottery Festival returns on Saturday, May 5th. Located in Townsend, this festival is destined to become a yearly tradition with a hand-picked selection of renowned potters sharing their clay art. Last year’s success has made it possible for the growth of the festival in 2018. This year’s festival will offer more types of pottery by a larger selection of potters with more demonstrations and more door prizes. With half of the artists hailing from Tennessee, this shows that there is a great passion for this hand-crafted art. With an even larger selection of returning and new potters, this event will give a chance for pottery collectors to meet the artists and purchase pieces to take home. The potters for 2018 have been juried to offer the best in earthenware and stoneware. This festival was created to showcase the many different styles and varieties of handmade clay art and help share the talent of these artists. The event will run from 10 am to 4 pm (rain or shine) and is located outside the Heritage Center in the Historic Village.

Admission is $5 for adults (GSMHC members and non-members), and children 5 and under will be free. A collection of the nation’s finest potters from Tennessee, Georgia, New York, North Carolina, Georgia, Ohio, Michigan, and Louisiana will display and sell their art for a wide range of prices. This is a perfect time to learn from and discuss different styles and forms of pottery with the expert potters. With the unique backdrop of the Heritage Center, the equally unique pieces of art are sure to delight shoppers. Many different styles of pottery will be showcased and available for purchase, including wheel thrown, functional stoneware, clay sculpture, horsehair, earthenware, and Raku. 2018’s featured artist is Alysha Baier, who will hold demonstrations throughout the day. Baier is a ceramic artist working out of Honeoye Pottery in Honeoye, NY, located in the Finger Lakes region of upstate NY. She keeps a whimsical and loose approach to her work by taking wheel thrown forms and altering the surfaces. Her style is also known for slip design that complements the altered forms. Though Baier focuses mainly on the

production of functional tableware, she also has a line of decorative horse hair pottery. PUBLIC LANDS Alliance (PLA) has announced the recipients of its 2018 Partnership Awards that celebrate the best in public lands partnerships. These awards honor individuals, organizations, publications, products, programs, and services that embody leading edge achievements in the preservation of public lands and the enrichment of visitors. Friends of the Smokies’ Trails Forever program was nominated for the Outstanding Public Engagement Award, which recognizes exemplary programs or services created in partnership by a non-profit organization and public lands that advance meaningful and sustainable connections between individuals and America’s public lands. The Trails Forever program is a partnership between Friends of the Smokies and Great Smoky Mountains National Park to rehabilitate some of the park’s most heavily-impacted trails. While the Trails Forever program did not win its category, it was awarded the Partners Choice Award as the most inspiring submission, decided by popular vote. Great Smoky Mountains Association received an honorable mention for Outstanding Public Engagement for the 2017 Solar Eclipse Events in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. New Belgium Brewing received the Corporate Stewardship Award on behalf of their philanthropic and partnership efforts with Friends of the Smokies. This award recognizes a company that has demonstrated exceptional achievement to enhance the quality of the visitor experience in America’s public lands. “New Belgium has been an important partner of Friends of the Smokies ever since they 10

PLA established the Public Lands Hero Award to celebrate individuals and organizations whose actions exceed the high standards to which all public lands partners aspire. The PLA Board of Directors honored the following non-profit organizations in recognition of their exemplary responses to natural disasters and crises affecting the public lands and communities that they support: Friends of the Smokies, Great Smoky Mountains Association, Eastern National, Friends of Virgin Islands National Park, Glacier National Park Conservancy, National Park Foundation, South Florida National Parks Trust, Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods, Student Conservation Association, Timucuan Parks Foundation, and Western National Park Association.

Regardless of the home’s inside, it’s the outside that matters most. What will buyers see when they view your home? First impressions matter. Look at your home from a buyer’s perspective. The four main areas they focus on include your front entry, yard and landscaping, driveway, and roof. Here are some suggestions.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Reaches 100 Million Book Milestone

in Sevier County, Tennessee, to the largest children’s literacy program in the world, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library has introduced millions of children around the globe to the fun of reading. Last month Parton herself enshrined the 100-millionth book distributed in the program’s existence into the Library of Congress. In addition to the extraordinary moment for Parton, the Imagination Library and Librarian of Congress, Carla Hayden, announced a monthly reading program for young readers at the Library of Congress. “I always like to say that 100 million books have led to 100 million stories,” said Parton. “I am so honored that our little program has now grown to such a point that we can partner with the Library of Congress to bring even more stories to children across the country.” Now through August, the library will host story time in the Great Hall of the Thomas Jefferson Building the last Friday of each month. Each story time will feature the reading of a book for readers up to age five, music, and special guests. The programs also will be livestreamed so children and parents anywhere with an internet connection can join the fun. The Library of Congress, the largest library in the world, has more than 160 million items catalogued. Fittingly, the 100-millionth book from the Imagination Library is Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors. Written by Parton, the book is an adaptation of her iconic song of the same name. Both the book and the song encourage children – and adults – to look past superficial appearances to the true heart of an 16

individual. Much like the amazing legacy of her Imagination Library, Parton used her humble childhood upbringing as motivation for a career of accomplishments that are without equal. The Imagination Library, which now distributes one million books every month, mails free books to children from birth to age five in participating communities within the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. “ D o l l y Pa r to n ’s wo r k t h ro u g h h e r Imagination Library is awe-inspiring,” said Hayden. “They have counted the number of books given away – 100 million, but there is no way to truly quantify the impact this program has had on developing young readers across America and in other parts of the

world. This is an extraordinary gift to humankind. The Library of Congress shares this passion for developing young readers, and I am so pleased to announce these cooperative programs, which will provide an opportunity for children anywhere to connect with a fun, engaging reading experience.” The story times will take place the last Friday of each month through August at 10:30 am in the Great Hall of the Thomas Jefferson Building, located at 10 First Street SE. 12th Annual Run for Autism on April 21 Supports Autism Breakthrough NAN KRICHINSKY

thought her young adult son with autism would enjoy participating in a 5K run. She and her son, Seth, registered for the first annual Breakthrough Run for Autism when she saw that the race welcomed anyone with intellectual and developmental disabilities. A bit tentative about the race, because sometimes those with autism have social interaction or communication challenges, Krichinsky figured those at the Breakthrough Run would be understanding of her son’s behavior. “After the race, I was ready to go home when the awards were being handed out,” said Krichinsky. “Every time someone would receive an award Seth was whooping and hollering. All I wanted to do was crawl into a hole. I thought, ‘Oh, they are going to kick us out.’” Instead, a race organizer asked her Seth’s name and said he had been so enthusiastic that race officials wanted to give him an award. “They called his name,” the relieved mother recalled. “Everyone cheered for him.” Seth has returned for the annual race all but one year, and each year he helps hand out awards and cheer for the race winners. “He is just so happy that he is there,” said Krichinsky. “It’s such a good time. You can just see the joy in his face.” Seth said running, seeing his friends, handing out awards, and being with his new friends, honorary race chair Lori Tucker of WATE-TV and Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett, who he helps with awards, all make the Breakthrough Run enjoyable. Seth plans to help again at the 12th annual Breakthrough Run for Autism on April 21, with Autism Breakthrough of Knoxville inviting individuals, teams, and those with intellectual and developmental disabilities to participate. The 5K Run /Walk and 1-Mile Fun Run begin at 8:30 am at Regal Cinemas Pinnacle Stadium 18 in Farragut’s Turkey Creek. The run, held during National Autism Awareness Month, supports Autism Breakthrough of Knoxville, a non-profit organization committed to helping adults facing the challenges of autism in the East Tennessee region. Lori Tucker, WATE-TV news anchor, will again serve as honorary chair of the run and will be the emcee during the awards ceremony. Happy Lee, a Breakthrough volunteer, is the race director. Autism Breakthrough of Knoxville invites any individual with a disability to register for the run or walk as a Breakthrough Buddy, as Seth does for each race. A Buddy may

request to participate with a volunteer, who will run or walk the course with the Buddy. Breakthrough Buddies receive special recognition during the award ceremony. Community, corporate, and school teams are encouraged to enter, and awards will be given to the largest teams. Teams bring a festive atmosphere to the race, designing their own t-shirts or wearing matching accessories. Families and friends have built teams supporting an individual on the autism spectrum. The Breakthrough Run is held on a flat, certified course through the quiet neighborhoods behind Turkey Creek, with chip timing for the 5K. Autism Breakthrough of Knoxville, started in 1999 by parents determined to improve the lives of adults with autism, provides individualized and communitybased services that offer quality care, a safe environment, family connection, and community involvement in a cost-effective

way. Autism spectrum disorder, a range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech, and nonverbal communication, is estimated to affect more than 2,000 individuals of all ages in Knox County. Autism Breakthrough provides residential services, in-home support, a Saturday therapeutic recreation program, day activities focusing on lifelong education, job skill development, and community integration, and a social group for adults with Asperger’s syndrome. It is the first such organization in Tennessee to provide those services specifically for adults with autism, according to race director Lee. “I can’t tell you how much we all appreciate Breakthrough and how supportive and welcoming they have been with Seth and the family,” said Krichinsky. Seth wasn’t receiving services from Breakthrough when he ran that first race. Now he participates in Breakthrough programs and works at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. Look for dogs that have similar exercise capacities and like to do similar things. A dog who’s quiet, shy, and timid and a dog who likes a lot of activity will have a challenge finding common ground. It will be hard if the dogs have different interests and ideas of a good time. » A dog who likes to romp through the woods for hours and a dog who simply enjoys playing fetch for five minutes and then wants back on the couch means you’re going to have some difficulties satisfying the instincts of

both. It makes catering to your dogs’ needs very time consuming. » Similar age doesn’t matter as much as similar health status. A lot of people ask us if bringing a puppy or young dog into the house will “spunk” up their older dog. Well, it depends on what your older dog is up for. An older dog can get revitalized by the younger dog only if the older dog is not sickly or slow with arthritic pains. If the older dog suffers from sickness or arthritic pain, the younger dog might only cause the older dog a great deal of stress. EK: When you launched The Lily Pad Boutique 40 years ago, you did so at a time when women owned businesses were a rarity. How did this impact your thinking at that time? Brenda: It honestly never crossed my mind that because I was a female, that it would not work! I believe that everyone, male or female, has the ability to recognize the moment and seize the opportunity to make things happen in their lives. EK: What many people might be unaware of is that you launched your self-employment dreams while raising young children. What challenges did this present? Brenda: Having opened The Lily Pad on a much smaller scale than it is now, it enabled me to be available as our daughters were growing up. Both Angie and Amy worked in the store during their high school and college years, accompanied me on buying trips to various cities, and have been involved in every aspect of the business. 24

EK: Why did you choose to pursue the ladies’ apparel marketplace? Brenda: When The Lily Pad opened in 1978, every small town across the country had their own ladies and men’s stores, as well as department stores… sometimes two or three of each! We were a novel idea, opening in the main lobby of a newly constructed hotel on I-75. The first thought was to appeal to the tourist traffic and travelers, but very quickly the market grew to local shoppers as well! Many of those still shop with us today, and we love hearing those stories… “Remember that dress I bought when you were at the hotel?” EK: Briefly describe your journey during the last 40 years. Brenda: Fast-paced, I would say! It has been amazing to experience the growth and to know The Lily Pad has been a part of the resurgence of our beautiful downtown area. I am constantly reinventing myself and the shop in the ever-changing world of fashion! EK: What motivated your relocation to historic downtown Sweetwater? Brenda: Having rented or leased for 25 years and constantly improving other people’s property, I decided it was time to buy my own! Sweetwater is a perfectly located small town, allowing us to serve a customer base within the entire East Tennessee Valley. With easy

interstate access, our customers travel easily from Chattanooga, Nashville, Knoxville, and the Tri-Cities areas. Once customers arrive, we’re quick to tell them of all the other amazing shops and eateries in our downtown area. One look at our guest book and you’re amazed by all of the areas we serve! EK: You’ve had several family members join The Lily Pad Boutique team. How has that influenced your plans for the future? Brenda: I feel very blessed that my family understands and loves what The Lily Pad is all about. Having grown up in the business, they are constantly reminded of the bonds and relationships that are formed through a business venture. One daughter, Angie, is a full-time part of our amazing Lily Pad team. Amy is a constant source of support, and selling is in her DNA! My granddaughter, Ivy, will be joining our team this summer, bringing her degree in marketing to take us to that next level! EK: How have you competed so successfully with the growth of online shopping? Brenda: While online shopping offers a great convenience, many women prefer to have complete control of their shopping experience. Women are very sophisticated shoppers and prefer to examine, touch, and try on what they are buying. Beyond the actual shopping, The Lily Pad adds a pleasant social element to their shopping experience. After their first trip, our customers are also, more importantly, our friends… something that is not possible online! EK: What future expansion plans do you have for The Lily Pad? Are there any plans to expand your product offerings or services? Brenda: We have had several inquiries about franchising our brand and expanding into other markets, so with Ivy joining us, the possibilities are endless… stay tuned! EK: What words of encouragement do you have for aspiring women entrepreneurs? Brenda: To quote one of my favorite female entrepreneurs, Estee Lauder, “I never dreamed of success, I worked for it.” Those are the most important and encouraging words you’ll need to carry with you as a business owner, whether male or female!

A N O P I N I O N about the beauty or utility of the state’s greenery? Researchers with the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture are accepting nominations to help determine a list of the 10 plants that have had the greatest impact on Tennessee. Imagine Florida without oranges or Georgia without peaches. The researchers are looking for nominations of the plants that most represent Tennessee. Members of the public are invited to submit nominations for the “Top 10 Plants that Changed Tennessee.” Participants may submit the name of a single plant that fits into one of six categories: Food, economy, health, history, landscape, and spiritual or cultural. Plants will be judged by their impact – either positive or negative – across the state’s history. Your contributions will be more than

just a fun exercise. Nominations will be evaluated by a panel of experts who will ultimately decide upon an official list of the 10 individual plants that have had the broadest impact on Tennessee. This information will then be used to create educational curricula for Tennessee’s elementary schools on a variety of subjects including biology and history. Natalie Bumgarner and Andy Pulte, faculty members with the UT Department of Plant Sciences, are heading up the project. “Plants influence almost every aspect of our lives,” said Bumgarner. “We eat them, wear products made by them, and sometimes even choose where we live because of them.” Pulte said the project already includes a lesson plan for state teachers to get students in grades K-5 thinking about the importance of plants throughout the state’s history,

including their importance to today’s economy. The researchers sent a letter to teachers in mid February outlining class activities and asking teachers and students to submit nominations by the end of the school year. Nominations from the general public are open through July 31. “We hope to have a definitive list for future curricula by the beginning of the next school year,” said Pulte. Jennifer Richards, a UT Extension 4-H curriculum specialist in the Department of Food Science, is also involved in the effort. The researchers ask everyone to take some time to ponder some plants, then go to the website, www.tenplants.tennessee.edu, and submit a nomination. The submission process is quick and easy, and participants may choose to receive follow-up information on the project by email.

I know that the calendar says that spring begins in March, but you can’t trust the weather until April. Actually, you can’t completely trust it until May, but at least your odds are better now. If you are new to this area, you may not have expected the roller coaster weather. Get used to it. Those of us who have lived here for a while know that this is typical. No, we don’t always hit 80 in February and then have snow in March, but it does occur surprisingly often. Have patience, and don’t get in such a hurry. Gardening isn’t about instant gratification. There are all kinds of things that can be done in the garden now, so here is your list: » Before you do anything, remember that the average last frost date ranges from April 6th to April 16th, depending on what area you live in. Keep that in mind when planting tender annuals and vegetables. » Finalize your garden plans for the spring. What would you like to add/ subtract/change? If you need help, stop by with some photos and we can make suggestions.

» Examine your plants for damage from the weather, insects, and disease. If a problem has you befuddled, stop by with a sample so we can help you make a proper diagnosis. It is easy to mistake fungus damage for insect damage and get frustrated when insecticides don’t work. It can also be costly to treat for a problem that you don’t have. » Please remember that not all insects are bad. Our frenzy to eliminate bugs has decimated our pollinator populations. Unless they are damaging your plant, sometimes it is best to leave things alone. » Don’t be in too big a hurry to prune out damaged branches or pull up “dead” shrubs. Wait until mid to late April and see what the plant is going to do. Sometimes foliage is damaged, but the plant is still alive. It will push off the old foliage and grow new if you give it time. Here’s that word again: Patience. » Will there be plants that don’t come back? Possibly. Look at it as an opportunity to try something new! » Do you know what is never, ever killed

by bad weather? Weeds! Pull them and/or spray them, then apply a pre-emergent to keep them from coming back. If you are spraying, please follow label directions. Some products require warmer temperatures to be effective. I also advise you to avoid spraying on a windy day unless you want to replace your neighbor’s plants. » Most flower beds would like to have some nice compost, topsoil, or manure mixed in to lift the nutrient levels. Healthy soil = healthy plants. Clay can be hard to deal with (literally), but it is amendable. Important note: Sand + clay = brick! Sand does not make a good additive without other products to keep the molecules from binding. » Trees, shrubs, tough annuals, most perennials, and cool season vegetables can be planted now. If you are a gambler, you can plant anything. If you want to be safe, wait until midmonth to plant the more delicate plants that like their soil to be warm. This includes tomatoes, pepper, and basil. I know that some of you had tomatoes in the ground weeks ago, but I promise they will do better if you wait. Tomatoes planted too early do not have good fruit set. » Since I mentioned vegetables, let’s talk about vegetable beds for a few minutes. It is critical that you do not plant the same plant in the same place! The old idea of crop rotation still applies if you are doing raised beds or container gardens. Most veggies can harbor viruses or bacteria in their roots that may not affect the current year but will devastate subsequent plantings. Move your plants around or replace the soil. In addition, it is also critical that you have a minimum of six hours of sunlight and use drip irrigation whenever possible. Water from overhead irrigation wets the leaves and contributes to fungal problems. » Cage peonies and stake tall perennials while they are small. » Remember our feathered friends. Bring out those birdbaths, and keep them clean and full. Stock up on good quality birdseed, or try a variety of feeders and seeds to increase the bird population. Blaine to Rutledge in neighboring Grainger County. The county was named in honor of Mary Grainger, who became Mrs. William Blount, the official first lady of the Southwest Territory from 1791-1796. Grainger was the second county that was organized after the State of Tennessee was received into the Union, Carter having preceded a few days before. By an act of the Legislature passed on April 22, 1796, contiguous portions of the extensive and unwieldy counties of Hawkins and Knox were severed from those jurisdictions and “created into a separate and distinct county by the name of Grainger.” Come for a visit, there is much to see. Within the 15 miles from Blaine to Rutledge, the past will be on your side. Some interesting historic sites to see include: Janeway Cabin (240 Indian Ridge Road in Blaine): This single-room cabin was constructed about six miles east of here and is the home of John Janeway and his wife, Gertrude. She was one of the last surviving widows of a Union Civil War veteran. She married John Janeway, an officer in the 14th Illinois Cavalry, in 1927 when she was 18 and he 81. Shields’ Station (U.S. Route 11W in Blaine): A tavern was established at the site around 1830. It was acquired by Dr. Samuel Shields, who operated the property as a stagecoach stop, tavern, store, medical dispensary, and post office. Andrew Jackson, Tennessee’s Old Hickory and seventh president of the U.S., stayed there. Poplar Hill, also known as the Cynthia Lea House (Northeast of Blaine): She turned down Sam Houston’s proposal to marry. It’s now a bed and breakfast. You are in the land of historic Lea Springs, 11 miles southwest of Rutledge off U.S. Route 11W, west on Lea Lake Road. Major Lea, Pryor Lea’s father, came to the region in the early 1790s. He traveled with Daniel Boone during his second 52

Shields Tavern trip through Cumberland Gap. In 1824, Pryor Lea, Major Lea’s first son, served as United States Attorney for Tennessee. Pryor was secretary of East Tennessee College, later known as University of Tennessee, from 1826-1827. From 1827-1831, he served as a United States Representative from Tennessee at the time that David Crockett and James K. Polk were serving. Richland – Albert Miller Lea farm (1760 Rutledge Pike in Blaine): Grainger County’s most famous citizen. Minnesota knows all about him, do you? Bryan House (7995 Rutledge Pike in Rutledge): Built in 1869 for Michael Goldman, who at one time was a merchant in Rutledge and was County Court Clerk of Grainger County from 1885-1872. Nance Building (Junction of Marshall Street and U.S. Route 11W in Rutledge): This substantial Federal style antebellum structure contributed to the development of commerce in Grainger County. Originally a commercial structure, it was probably used as an inn or tavern from its earliest days until circa 1857 and as a general mercantile store between 1857-1897 before becoming a private residence in 1897. Old Grainger County Jail (SE corner of Water Street & TN 92 in Rutledge): Oldest remaining jail in Tennessee. Henderson Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (Church Street in Rutledge): The church building was constructed in 1890. It is a frame building with a gable entrance, a vernacular design that is commonly seen in rural African-American churches built in the 20th century. Presbyterian Church and Cemetery (123 Church Street in Rutledge): Rutledge Presbyterian Church and Cemetery were constructed in 1903. It’s an example of a Folk Victorian style church with Gothic Revival detailing. A one-story, weather-boarded building is with a corner bell tower, shingles in the front gable, and stained glass windows.

Each of the windows has different patterns in stained glass. The cemetery has burials dating to 1864 and surrounds the church. William Cocke House (Northeast of Rutledge): Home of Congressman William Michael Cocke. A member of a politically prominent family, he represented Grainger County in both the Tennessee House of Representatives and Tennessee Senate and served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1845-1849. Ask and we will tell you about the murder. Tate Springs Springhouse (East of Bean Station on U.S. Route 11W in Bean Station): The springhouse is one of the last remnants from Tate Springs Resort, a popular resort of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Grainger County Archives is located on the top floor of the old Rutledge High School building (now the Board of Education offices) at 7850 Rutledge Pike (Hwy 11W) in Rutledge, located 33 miles northeast of Knoxville, on Hwy 11W. It’s open Mondays and Tuesdays 9:30 am to 3:30 pm and the first and third Wednesdays of the month from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. Many of the county’s records go back to the time before statehood, when the area was part of North Carolina and then the Territory South of the River Ohio. We welcome your visit.

and Knoxville have a special relationship that goes back many years. In fact, it goes all the way back to when Tommy’s career in America began. So whenever his nearly annual show here in K-town is announced, it’s always a highly anticipated event. Such is the case this year with Tommy’s April 27th show at the historic Tennessee Theatre. I caught up with Tommy to talk about that upcoming show and others on the tour, as well as his new CD, “Accomplice One.” We chatted by phone while he was vacationing in California. “We’re coming back to the Tennessee Theatre,” he said. “One of my favorites. It’s a special place, there’s no doubt about it. It’s made extra special by the fact that my dressing room has Chet Atkins’ name on the door. It’s Chet Atkins’ dressing room. It’s always good to call in the master’s voice. “There are beautiful theaters like that all across America. The Fox Theaters, everywhere, were always the elite theater. The best place to play. But, of course, me playing in Knoxville is like coming home to me, because it’s really where I started in America with the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society. “We started in a little place called Ossili Circle, which was basically a ladies’ bridge club. We got a little stage there and some seats. “I used to go out there to Luttrell, Tennessee, to see where Chet was born and where he was from and visit some of the folks that lived next door and all that. It was a bit of a pilgrimage for me when I was young. And then to play in Knoxville was a great feeling, because I felt like my life was coming full circle almost. I played the guitar, because I loved the music that came out of that area, and now 56

I’m back there playing it.” Continuing on, Tommy shared what Knoxville fans can expect from the show that will include Amanda Shires. “Obviously I’m going to be playing a lot of new stuff from ‘Accomplice One,’ and Amanda and I will do ‘Borderline,’ and there’ll probably be something else. We’ll have to work that out. She’s going to showcase a lot of her new songs, because she’s got a great new album coming out. I’m going to play stuff from right through my whole career, really. I’m going to take everybody back to the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s, ’90s." Regarding his new CD, “Accomplice One,” Tommy had this to say: “First of all, it’s called ‘Accomplice One,’ which might give you a hint that I did a lot more recording than what is just on that one record. With each of the artists, with the exception of Mark Knopfler, just about every one of the other artists and I recorded more than one song. So that’s fun!” He then shared how his cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze” (with his good friend, Jerry Douglas) made it on the CD. “We had about an hour left before our studio time was up, and I said, ‘Do you want to have a go at Purple Haze?’ and he said, ‘Yeah!’ I played a bit of it for him, and he joined in and said, ‘Let’s not rehearse it. Let’s just play it.’ So we did, and that’s the track. We only played it once.” What’s on Tommy’s radar for the rest of the year? “In April is America. May is England and Scotland. I’m doing a camp in Scotland, up in the Highlands. In June, I’m back recording some stuff. July is some dates here at the Chet Atkins convention and my guitar camp in Memphis. August and September will be in Australia and South Africa. October is Italy, I think. Jerry Douglas is doing that tour with me. November will be France and Clive Carroll, the guy who plays the Irish tunes with me on the album – Clive’s doing that tour. Then in December, I’m back here in America for Christmas. The last three years I did Christmas tours. I’m not doing Christmas tours this year. more than 20 examples of southern mountain rifles and pistols at an upcoming temporary exhibit at the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center in Townsend, Tennessee, from May 1 to October 25, presented by the Kentucky Rifle Foundation. These 18th and 19th century tools were essential for the survival of pioneers in the frontiers of Eastern Tennessee and Western Carolina. These southern mountain rifles fully evolved in the last quarter of the 18th and the first quarter of the 19th centuries, as pioneers and settlers moved into what is now Eastern Tennessee and Western North Carolina. In the original colonies during

this time, the Kentucky rifle was becoming an art piece in its “Golden Age,” while on the frontier, the southern mountain rifle had become an unadorned, iron-mounted utilitarian piece. Baxter Bean, whose work exemplified the typical southern mountain rifle, was a third-generation gunsmith who worked in the Jonesboro, Tennessee, area. One of Baxter’s rifles, which will be on exhibit, was brought into Cades Cove by Wilson “Wilse” Birchfield, who named the rifle “Old Bean.” Wilse chose to live high in the mountains just under Gregory’s Bald. When he moved out of the Cove into the mountains, the old timers told him the bears would eat him alive. Wilse’s response to this was, “Old Wilson

may eat some, too.” These rifles, pistols, and accoutrements will be on display May 1 through October 25. Ocmulgee National Monument

Macon was founded in 1823 on the banks of the Ocmulgee River, growing out of the 1806 frontier Fort Hawkins. The fort was named for an Indian Scout sent to the area to set up trading, and the city was named for a beloved North Carolinian statesman. Prior to Fort Hawkins’ establishment, the earliest European contact was in 1540 when Hernando DeSoto came through the area. North America’s first Christian baptism was recorded when priests in DeSoto’s band baptized two Indian boys in the Ocmulgee River near what is now Central City Park. However, Native Americans had inhabited the area for as many as 10,000 years before that as evidenced by the discovery of clovis points at the archaeologically significant Ocmulgee National Monument. Union General George Stoneman came close to Macon, but the city was defended three times before surrendering at the close of the Civil War, preserving its neighborhoods of classic Greek revival and Victorian style homes. Today Macon is a city of diverse cultures, beautiful architecture, an exciting music heritage, and thriving arts and educational opportunities.

Historical Locations

Ocmulgee National Monument Part of the National Park Service, Ocmulgee National Monument preserves evidence of 17,000 years of human habitation. Earthen mounds, a ceremonial earthlodge, artifacts, and dioramas help tell the story of Native American life. The monument hosts the Ocmulgee Indian Celebration every September.

Rose Hill Cemetery Established in 1840 along the Ocmulgee River, Rose Hill remains one of the oldest surviving public cemetery parks in the U.S. Duane Allman and Berry Oakley, founding members of the Allman Brothers Band, are buried here side-by-side. Also laid to rest are 600 Confederate soldiers, three Georgia governors, architect Neel Reid, author Harry Stillwell Edwards, an accused ax-murderer, and Lt. Bobby, whose inscription reads “Just a Brown Dog....”

A true birthplace of Soul and Southern Rock, Macon holds a storied place in American music history. Little Richard and Otis Redding grew up in Macon and began their legendary careers here, while James Brown recorded his first single in town at WIBB. In the ’70s, Macon’s Capricorn Records introduced the Allman Brothers Band, Marshall Tucker Band, and Wet Willie to rock music fans. Revered landmarks, including a life-sized bronze statue of Otis Redding, and lively nightclubs and festivals keep the local music scene exciting.

Southern Elements

Colorful Culinary History Macon is home to Nu-Way Weiners, the 80-year-old hot dog stand with the trademarked misspelled sign, and Fincher’s, whose Blue Ribbon bar-b-que traveled to space on a NASA mission in 1989. Mama Louise Hudson of H & H Restaurant regularly gave free plates of food to a scraggly group of starving

musicians who, when they hit it big as The Allman Brothers Band, took her out on the road with them. The novel Whisper to the Black Candle tells of Anjette Lyles, a beloved Macon restaurateur who rid herself of four family members with arsenic. Macon enjoys a variety of locally owned and acclaimed restaurants, from charming bistros to downhome soul food kitchens. Wini McQueen Internationally acclaimed folk-art quilter, painter, textile designer, writer, and social activist, Wini McQueen, explores her personal history, as well as the history of African and African American cultures, in her work. She developed a photocopy-transfer technique to create works of art on fabric. Her quilts are in the permanent collection at Atlanta’s High Museum of Art and Macon’s Museum of Arts and Sciences. Chuck Leavell Twiggs County tree farmer, Chuck Leavell, is not only a nationally recognized conservationist, but he’s also been an unofficial member of the Rolling Stones for the past 25 years. Other credits include recording and/or touring with Eric Clapton, George Harrison, The Allman Brothers Band, The Black Crowes, Gov’t Mule, Train, and many others. A solo artist and author of two novels, Leavell’s most recent project is an illustrated children’s book entitled The Tree Farmer.

Avoid New Tax Law Complacency B Y TO M I R M E N

T HE TAX CUTS

and Job Acts of 2017 gripped headlines right up to its enactment, but much less is heard today of its far reaching impacts on individual and business taxpayers. Many of us are understandably focused on reporting our 2017 tax liabilities and the day-to-day management of our businesses. One word of caution, however: Don’t allow complacency to creep into your tax planning for 2018 and beyond. It could end up costing you plenty. In fact, I would encourage every small business owner to schedule time with their accountant to discuss all of the applicable provisions of this new tax law that will likely impact them. I asked Yvonne Marsh, Certified Financial Planner™ and CPA of Marsh Wealth Management, to elaborate on several of the key provisions of the new tax. Here is her response: The new tax laws generally benefit both individuals and small business owners in the form of higher standard deductions and lower marginal tax rates. The biggest change for small business owners is the introduction of the Qualified Business Income (“QBI”)

Entering into this new tax year without a thorough understanding of the potential impact of the new tax law on our businesses could cost you thousands of dollars and missed opportunities deduction. QBI is generally the earnings from a trade or business. If the business is a passthrough entity (i.e. not a C corporation) and the total taxable income is less than $207,500 for an individual or $415,000 for a married couple, then the owners can take a deduction for 20% of their qualified business income. If those income limits are exceeded, there are additional rules relating to the type of business you own and the deduction begins to phase-out. Notably, this QBI deduction does not reduce your self-employment tax. Other changes for small business owners

include the elimination of the 50% entertainment expense deduction (the 50% meals deduction remains), increased deprecation for business cars, an employer tax credit for paid leave provided under the Family and Medical Leave Act, increased deductions for bonus depreciation, and the limit to expense purchases under Section 179 was raised from $520,000 to $1 million annually. Entering into this new tax year without a thorough understanding of the potential impact of the new tax law on our businesses could cost you thousands of dollars and missed opportunities that perhaps your competition may take full advantage of. If you’ve already prepared your taxes for 2017, schedule a follow-up appointment with your accountant. If you haven’t already completed your 2017 taxes, schedule an appointment with your accountant to discuss the new tax law. A Professional Seeks to Make Things Right Immediately

E ALL MAKE MISTAKES.

Quite often it seems. A professional, however, is quick to acknowledge their mistakes and tries to make things right as quickly as possible. This behavior requires courage, humility, and a commitment to ethical practices. I think we’ve all experienced working with those who have an endless supply of excuses and a fervent determination to avoid responsibility. I hope this is not us. It really is a matter of integrity. Someone with integrity is honest in all things, and that means that they are also honest with themselves and others regarding their performance or lack thereof. I’m not suggesting that we go around each day announcing to the world all of our failures or weaknesses. No, not at all. But what I am suggesting is that we take responsibility for our own actions without blame, without deterrents, and without a desire to 64

deceive in any way. Let’s say that I was responsible for getting a financial report to my boss for a large project coming up and it was due by today at 5 pm. I “dropped the ball” on a few things, and the report is not ready by 5:00. Some people who lack professionalism might: » Avoid their boss for the remainder of the day so they’re not confronted with the missing report. » Blame the delay on information that has not been received from others that is necessary for the report (knowing that it was their fault because they didn’t ask the other people for the information until yesterday). » Blame the delay on untrue circumstances like illness, family emergencies, etc. I think you get the point. While someone with integrity might say to their boss: » “I know you’re going to be disappointed in me, but it looks like I did not plan well and

have let this deadline slip up on me without the report being completed.” » “I am not going to be able to have the report to you by 5:00, which I am extremely sorry for, but will have it to you by 5:00 tomorrow. I have had to reanalyze my production schedule and have made some changes so I can keep my commitments to you in the future. I hope you will give me another chance. I’m really sorry.” I think you get the point. Being honest and ethical does not guarantee job security, but it does guarantee a clear conscience, honor, and self respect. May each of us acknowledge our mistakes quickly and then recommit to improvement.
