PRIL IN Knoxville is

full of activity as our calendar of events will show, and we at Everything Knoxville hope you can get out and enjoy some of the events we’ve posted. While some flowers have already bloomed, my favorite spring blooms are still to come. April Photo by D. Roberts Photography brings the blossoming of the cherry trees, magnolias, and, of course, the dogwoods. In the Knoxville area, April is dedicated to the dogwoods celebrating those blooms with a month-long festival. Activities for this year’s Dogwood Arts Festival are included in this edition. When spring arrives, I am energized to clean and redecorate the inside and outside of my home. The longer days make working on projects more enjoyable, and East Tennessee has the best spring weather. If spring energizes you to spruce up your home, then consider contacting some of our advertisers that cater to your home’s interior and exterior décor like 4

our featured business, CertaPro Painters. Their team of professionals can give your home a fresh look both inside and out, and they have services that go beyond painting. I know that for me, spring means I can enjoy the outdoors more with the longer days, so I have a tendency to enjoy exercising more like taking a walk through our neighborhood or a hike in the nearby forest preserve. But if you need more motivation to exercise regularly and be accountable, then you should consider checking out one of our highlighted fitness centers like Fitness Together. If you have some stubborn areas you need to work on that exercise does not seem to meet your goals, then you might contact Southeastern Dermatology and get yourself ready for bathing suit season. Spring is all too short, and the hot days of summer will soon be arriving, so get out and enjoy the weather. With all the great scenery here in East Tennessee, you have no excuse not to explore our beautiful Knoxville area.

of the year to tackle those projects to update your home or business that perhaps you have been postponing, and there is not a faster or more cost-effective way to update your interior and exterior surfaces than painting. With literally thousands of colors and finishes to select from, you are sure to discover those just-so-perfect colors for your every mood, every space, and every project in your home or business. Experts understand that the successful outcome of every painting project rests entirely on your selection of a painting contractor. The selection of a paint brand, paint type, and colors are secondary. So just how do you know if your choice of a painter is the right choice? In this issue of Everything Knoxville, we 6

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE April 2018

are pleased to share this interview with CertaPro Painters of East Tennessee owners, and husband and wife team, Jeff and Joann Brown. CertaPro Painters of East Tennessee is the proud recipient of numerous awards and honors for their expertise in the fields of both residential and commercial painting during the last 15 years, and they continue to earn a reputation for honesty, integrity, value, and quality craftsmanship. EK: Describe the CertaPro Painters process and how this process differentiates you in the residential and commercial painting marketplace. Jeff: We work very hard to make the painting experience “certain” for our customers. I believe people generally think that working with contractors is often just more trouble than it is worth. So, we work hard to do what

we say we will do, doing it as scheduled, on time and on budget with as little disruption as possible to customers’ lives at work or home. EK: At CertaPro, you state that you “don’t paint houses – you paint lives” and that you “don’t paint commercial businesses – you paint people’s livelihoods.” How is this approach not only unique, but also important to your customers? Joann: We understand how busy our customers’ lives can be, so we respect and value their time. We know they have hired CertaPro because they want a quality job at a fair price, and they don’t want to have to worry about the project they have hired us to perform. They may continue with their regular schedule and let us take care of the rest without the hassles. EK: Perhaps the number one complaint of Photo by D. Roberts Photography

both home and business owners when hiring a contractor is poor communication. How do you overcome this communication challenge with your customers? Jeff: We start by listening to the needs of our customers, consulting with them about their project scope, needs, timing, vision, and budget. We provide detailed written proposals quickly, review it in person with the customer the morning we start the project, provide daily updates to the customer, and at the end, we perform a “pride walk” to ensure the project is 100% complete in their eyes! EK: How do the prices at CertaPro compare to those of your competitors? Joann: We research this regularly and find that our prices are very competitive with every other professional painting contractor. By professional, I mean a company that carries workers’ compensation and liability insurance, a company who has been in business for several years and offers a warranty, a company whose painters go through training to make sure they follow company policies, a company that doesn’t ask for money up front but only at the end of the project when everything is complete and the customer is satisfied. That is CertaPro, and we want to help protect your largest investment! EK: CertaPro Painters of East Tennessee has earned the distinction of being the most referred painter in the entire area. You have also earned a reputation for achieving a nearly 98% customer retention rate,

with almost half of your new clients coming from existing customers’ referrals. Why should this be important to prospective new customers? Jeff: Trust is the first word that comes to mind. We believe our customers call us time and time again because we have proven to them that we do what we say, do it timely, with little disruption and at very competitive prices. We work hard to earn and keep their trust. EK: What other services do you offer your clients? Joann: In addition to interior and exterior painting, we offer pressure washing, drywall removal and installation, drywall repair, concrete staining, wood repair and replacement, stucco repair, knockdown/texturing, wallpaper removal and installation, and small remodel projects. (Bathroom remodel, mud room addition, screen porch or deck additions, and commercial build-out are a few examples.) EK: Contrast your “consultation” proposal method to the “estimate” alternative used by your competition, and tell our readers why this is so important. Jeff: Often our homeowners know they want or need to paint or do repairs but they are unsure of color, scope of work, materials, etc. We listen to what our customers want and work with them to ensure they get what they are looking for, and then we detail it with a written proposal. An estimate is vague, usually just a number, and frequently winds

up in disappointment. EK: What kind of warranty do you offer your customers? Joann: We offer a written warranty both residentially and commercially. More importantly, we ensure we do it right the first time so a customer is not inconvenienced by a warranty issue! EK: What is the best way for prospective new customers to learn more about CertaPro Painters of East Tennessee? Jeff: If someone is considering a project, they should give us a call and one of our sales associates will come to their home or business and provide a free consultation about the project, and they can also learn more about our company and services. EK: In closing, is there anything else you would like to tell our readers? Joann: We would like to say thank you to all of our loyal customers who we have worked for during the past 15 years. We know you have many choices, and we truly appreciate you letting CertaPro into your homes and businesses. If you haven’t given CertaPro a try, please give us a call for a complimentary consultation and estimate. We have an amazing team who is always anxious to help. Thank you, East Tennessee!

Tennessee Pottery Festival I

N ITS SECOND year at the Great

Smoky Mountains Heritage Center, the Tennessee Pottery Festival returns on Saturday, May 5th. Located in Townsend, this festival is destined to become a yearly tradition with a hand-picked selection of renowned potters sharing their clay art. Last year’s success has made it possible for the growth of the festival in 2018. This year’s festival will offer more types of pottery by a larger selection of potters with more demonstrations and more door prizes. With half of the artists hailing from Tennessee, this shows that there is a great passion for this hand-crafted art. With an even larger selection of returning and new potters, this event will give a chance for pottery collectors to meet the artists and purchase pieces to take home. The potters for 2018 have been juried to offer the best in earthenware and stoneware. This festival was created to showcase the many different styles and varieties of handmade clay art and help share the talent of these artists. The event will run from 10 am to 4 pm (rain or shine) and is located outside the Heritage Center in the Historic Village.

8

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE April 2018

Admission is $5 for adults (GSMHC members and non-members), and children 5 and under will be free. A collection of the nation’s finest potters from Tennessee, Georgia, New York, North Carolina, Georgia, Ohio, Michigan, and Louisiana will display and sell their art for a wide range of prices. This is a perfect time to learn from and discuss different styles and forms of pottery with the expert potters. With the unique backdrop of the Heritage Center, the equally unique pieces of art are sure to delight shoppers. Many different styles of pottery will be showcased and available for purchase, including wheel thrown, functional stoneware, clay sculpture, horsehair, earthenware, and Raku. 2018’s featured artist is Alysha Baier, who will hold demonstrations throughout the day. Baier is a ceramic artist working out of Honeoye Pottery in Honeoye, NY, located in the Finger Lakes region of upstate NY. She keeps a whimsical and loose approach to her work by taking wheel thrown forms and altering the surfaces. Her style is also known for slip design that complements the altered forms. Though Baier focuses mainly on the

production of functional tableware, she also has a line of decorative horse hair pottery. MOOYAH Burgers, Fries & Shakes will be serving up lunch for an additional charge, and live music will also be on hand in the Historic Village. “We are so proud of the 2017 festival, and we are excited about the future that is in store for 2018 and beyond,” said Logan Hull, Director of Special Events at the Great Smoky Mountain Heritage Center. “We have grown quite a bit and are focused on providing THE place to find unique and creative pieces of pottery!” Special thanks to our sponsors: Blount Partnership, Richard and Joni Maples, and our media sponsor The Daily Times. PUBLIC LANDS Alliance (PLA) has announced the recipients of its 2018 Partnership Awards that celebrate the best in public lands partnerships. These awards honor individuals, organizations, publications, products, programs, and services that embody leading edge achievements in the preservation of public lands and the enrichment of visitors. Friends of the Smokies’ Trails Forever program was nominated for the Outstanding Public Engagement Award, which recognizes exemplary programs or services created in partnership by a non-profit organization and public lands that advance meaningful and sustainable connections between individuals and America’s public lands. The Trails Forever program is a partnership between Friends of the Smokies and Great Smoky Mountains National Park to rehabilitate some of the park’s most heavily-impacted trails. While the Trails Forever program did not win its category, it was awarded the Partners Choice Award as the most inspiring submission, decided by popular vote. Great Smoky Mountains Association received an honorable mention for Outstanding Public Engagement for the 2017 Solar Eclipse Events in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. New Belgium Brewing received the Corporate Stewardship Award on behalf of their philanthropic and partnership efforts with Friends of the Smokies. This award recognizes a company that has demonstrated exceptional achievement to enhance the quality of the visitor experience in America’s public lands. “New Belgium has been an important partner of Friends of the Smokies ever since they 10

PLA established the Public Lands Hero Award to celebrate individuals and organizations whose actions exceed the high standards to which all public lands partners aspire. The PLA Board of Directors honored the following non-profit organizations in recognition of their exemplary responses to natural disasters and crises affecting the public lands and communities that they support: Friends of the Smokies, Great Smoky Mountains Association, Eastern National, Friends of Virgin Islands National Park, Glacier National Park Conservancy, National Park Foundation, South Florida National Parks Trust, Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods, Student Conservation Association, Timucuan Parks Foundation, and Western National Park Association.

“Moments of crisis remind us of the critical importance and value of strong partnerships between land managers and non-profit partners,” said Dan Puskar, PLA Executive Director. “Hurricanes and wildfires unexpectedly impact many of our public lands, and it is strong partnerships that provide the resiliency needed to bounce back from their destructive impacts.” About Friends of the Smokies Friends of the Smokies is an official nonprofit partner of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and has raised more than $60 million to support critical park programs and maintain the Smokies as a crown jewel of the National Park Service. Find your park at www.FriendsOfTheSmokies.org. About the Public Lands Alliance The Public Lands Alliance is a network of more than 130 member organizations that serve more than 600 public lands and contribute more than $250 million dollars annually to the preservation and visitor enhancement of those lands. The Top Four Areas to Focus On to Increase Your Home’s Curbside Appeal & Value

A

CCORDING TO the National

Association of Realtors, 63% of homebuyers will tour a home they’ve viewed online. They cite “curbside appeal,” which refers to the first impression buyers have of a property. Regardless of the home’s inside, it’s the outside that matters most. What will buyers see when they view your home? First impressions matter. Look at your home from a buyer’s perspective. The four main areas they focus on include your front entry, yard and landscaping, driveway, and roof. Here are some suggestions.

Front Entry

» How well is your entryway illuminated? Consider using affordable LED and solar lighting. » Repaint your front door, trim, and shutters with a bright color contrasting the house. » Make sure the doorbell operates and that metalwork, including your street numbers, is clean and polished. » Replace burned-out exterior bulbs, and clean all lighting fixtures. » Seasonal wreaths or a decorative door knocker can make your home more welcoming. » Add large potted plants to your deck or porch. » Consider upgrading your walkway to an alternative surface or applying stain or paint

» Repair or remove old or outdated fencing.

Driveway and Walkway

BEFORE

AFTER

to your concrete. Add plants and a rock shoulder on each side of the path. » Do a “mailbox makeover.” » Replace your welcome mat with a large, bright, and cheery mat. » Add a rocking chair or even a bench. » Consider adding an arbor near the front door. » Add outdoor curtains to set off a seating area or porch to add a touch of color.

Yard and Landscaping

» Create a pop of color with flowers on your porch, along the drive, or around your trees. » Select a variety of plants and flowers to create year-round color. » Weed, remove dead blooms, and mulch regularly. » Mow and trim your entire yard regularly. Reseed bare areas, and eliminate yard clutter. Keep bushes and shrubs trimmed.

» Remove clutter and anything else that will detract from the home’s appearance. » Repair cracked and damaged walkways. » Make sure your driveway is well lighted and easy for guests to navigate. » Add plants or decorative rock along your drive.

The Roof

» Clean and repair gutters. » Remove holiday lighting and hooks. » Remove accumulated leaves and pine needles. » Does your roof need replacing or just a good cleaning? The time and money you invest in improving your curbside appeal will more than pay for itself. A few hundred dollars and a weekend or two spent improving your home’s first impression can result in thousands of dollars in the purchase price, so take the time to do it right.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Reaches 100 Million Book Milestone

F ROM ITS INFANCY

in Sevier County, Tennessee, to the largest children’s literacy program in the world, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library has introduced millions of children around the globe to the fun of reading. Last month Parton herself enshrined the 100-millionth book distributed in the program’s existence into the Library of Congress. In addition to the extraordinary moment for Parton, the Imagination Library and Librarian of Congress, Carla Hayden, announced a monthly reading program for young readers at the Library of Congress. “I always like to say that 100 million books have led to 100 million stories,” said Parton. “I am so honored that our little program has now grown to such a point that we can partner with the Library of Congress to bring even more stories to children across the country.” Now through August, the library will host story time in the Great Hall of the Thomas Jefferson Building the last Friday of each month. Each story time will feature the reading of a book for readers up to age five, music, and special guests. The programs also will be livestreamed so children and parents anywhere with an internet connection can join the fun. The Library of Congress, the largest library in the world, has more than 160 million items catalogued. Fittingly, the 100-millionth book from the Imagination Library is Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors. Written by Parton, the book is an adaptation of her iconic song of the same name. Both the book and the song encourage children – and adults – to look past superficial appearances to the true heart of an 16

individual. Much like the amazing legacy of her Imagination Library, Parton used her humble childhood upbringing as motivation for a career of accomplishments that are without equal. The Imagination Library, which now distributes one million books every month, mails free books to children from birth to age five in participating communities within the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. “ D o l l y Pa r to n ’s wo r k t h ro u g h h e r Imagination Library is awe-inspiring,” said Hayden. “They have counted the number of books given away – 100 million, but there is no way to truly quantify the impact this program has had on developing young readers across America and in other parts of the

world. This is an extraordinary gift to humankind. The Library of Congress shares this passion for developing young readers, and I am so pleased to announce these cooperative programs, which will provide an opportunity for children anywhere to connect with a fun, engaging reading experience.” The story times will take place the last Friday of each month through August at 10:30 am in the Great Hall of the Thomas Jefferson Building, located at 10 First Street SE. The events are free and open to the public. No tickets are required. The programs will also be livestreamed on the Library’s Facebook page at www.facebook. com/libraryofcongress and its YouTube site (with captions) at www.youtube.com/ LibraryOfCongress.

Happiness in Retirement – It’s Easier Than You Think

Y

B Y Y V O N N E M A R S H , C F P ® , C PA

OU KNOW WHO

my happiest clients are? People with pensions. Maybe they were teachers or firemen or worked for a company that provided them one. They have peace of mind that comes with a Yvonne Marsh, guaranteed paycheck in retirement CFP®, CPA along with Social Security. We all have Social Security – a type of pension – but it’s only meant to cover about 38% of our income. So what happens to those of us who have to fill that 62% gap with our savings riding the whims of the markets? We worry. We worry about how long we’re going to live and how long the money has to last, for ourselves and our spouses. We worry about whether the markets are going to make us wealthy or make us poor. We worry about inflation. We worry about our health and how we’re going to pay for spiraling health care costs. But stop worrying! Anyone can create a happy retirement. Here’s how: If you don’t have a pension, create one. Use a portion of your retirement savings and fund a pension annuity with a reputable life insurance company. How much? Have enough guaranteed lifetime income to cover what you NEED and DESIRE. Cover basic living expenses such as housing, health care, food, and debt repayment. And plan for fun spending, too – travel, golf, shop, garden, spoil grandkids. Otherwise, you might end up leaving the money to the kids, and guess what they’re going to do? Spend it on the fun things that you didn’t. Optimize the rest of your portfolio to protect against inflation using a well-diversified portfolio. If inflation is running at 2% to 3%, costs will literally double during your retirement years. The portfolio should be invested for both short-term and longterm income needs. Have a plan for long-term care costs not paid for by Medicare. It’s difficult to withstand the shock of a multi-year health event costing $40,000 to $60,000/ year. Having a long-term care plan in place, especially using asset-based LTC insurance, equals peace of mind for you and your spouse and your adult children. Have smart tax strategies in place. Don’t give your hard-earned dollars to the IRS because of poor tax planning, whether during your lifetime or as assets pass to heirs. How to Eat More Protein and Improve Athletic Performance A R T I C L E C O U R T E SY O F B P T

W

HETHER COMPETING recreation-

ally, at an amateur level, or professionally in front of the world, proper nutrition is a key component of any athlete’s performance. A variety of nutrients come into consideration, but one seems to get the highest level of attention: Protein. Because protein helps build and maintain muscle and body tissue, it’s important for active individuals to eat enough. Snacking on protein-rich foods and eating meals packed with protein can help support an athlete’s physical wellness so they can reach their goals. Here are a few recommended practices for athletes to lead the pack with their meal routines: Pre-workout fuel for sustained energy Before practice or a workout, load up on whole grains and protein with hard-boiled eggs and a granola bar to keep you fueled longer. A nutritional powerhouse with only 70 calories, one large egg contains six grams of high-quality protein and nine essential amino acids. Remember, your muscles rely on mainly carbohydrates but also protein for sustained energy during activity. Recovery and repair post-workout After physical activity, include eggs and other protein-packed foods in a post-workout sandwich or wrap to help your recovery. Research indicates eating a mix of carbs and protein – ideally about 20-30 grams of protein – has been shown to promote muscle repair and optimal recovery. Not only are eggs delicious, nutritious, and versatile, they are also one of the most affordable sources of high-quality protein. This makes it easy for athletes to maintain an optimal diet that is heavy on the results and light on their wallets. Previous misconceptions had many people just eating egg whites, but eating the yolk offers loads of nutritional benefits. That’s because the yolk contains more than 40% of the protein in an egg and most of the egg’s nutrients, like choline, vitamin B12, and selenium. Want to fuel yourself to be the best you can be? The Incredible Egg has a collection of proteinpacked egg recipes to help you get inspired. For athletes always on the go, there are also quick and easy egg recipes to please any palate.

The Healthy Side of Dental Implants

M

The above image shows the deterioration of the jawbone over time in the absence of your natural teeth.

ILLIO NS O F Americans

suffer from tooth loss, primarily the result of injury, periodontal disease, or decay. In the past, treatment options included bridges and dentures, but unfortunately, neither option addresses the issue of bone loss of the jawbone that often results from the loss of natural teeth. One of the major advantages of dental implants is that the implant root, which is placed into the bone socket of the missing tooth, actually helps to support and maintain a healthy level of jawbone mass, much the same as your natural teeth. Preventing jawbone loss helps to maintain both your health and a more youthful appearance, preventing the “collapsed” jaw look of those who have lost significant bone loss of the jaw. The presence of natural tooth roots or implant roots continues to preserve the jawbone through the pressure and stimulus resulting from normal chewing action. This same pressure is reduced by 90% or more with conventional dentures. So the positive and healthy implications of dental implants go far beyond just your

appearance. With good oral hygiene and regular dental care, your implants can function just like your natural teeth while lasting a lifetime. And with the added advantage of the implants’ roots, you can avoid that sunken, premature appearance that happens when jawbone loss occurs. At Heritage Family Dentistry in nearby and convenient Farragut, Dr. Jonathan Bradshaw and his team of experienced, caring, and compassionate medical professionals can assist you in making the right choice of dentures or implants, as well as provide family friendly dental care. Heritage Family Dentistry can also assist you with financing to help assure that you receive the dental care you need. Fitness Together “I Love the Results!” “I could not have achieved these goals without Fitness Together.”

“B

Y THE TIME I finished graduate school, my poor

eating habits and sedentary lifestyle were beginning to catch up with me,” said wife, mom, and busy medical professional, Laura Black. “I knew I was a little heavier and thought I could lose the weight on my own.” Unhappy with the way her clothes fit and experiencing shortness of breath when running up a flight of stairs, Laura decided to act. “I didn’t know what to do or where to start,” she said. “I knew I needed one-on-one help, so I began looking for a professional trainer.” While researching personal trainers online, Laura recognized a client of Fitness Together featured on their website. “I actually contacted her with questions,” she said. “She was happy with her experience, so I decided to try it out. I didn’t have anything to lose but weight.” Laura made an appointment for a complimentary workout at Fitness Together. “It was tough but doable – exactly what I needed,” said Laura. “I signed up and have been there ever since.” Laura’s commitment has helped her succeed. Working with her Fitness Together personal trainer, Shea Sims, she has lost 30 pounds – a 10% body fat loss. She has also lost 6.9 inches in her chest, 4.3 inches in her hips, and 7.2 inches in her waist. Upon starting, Laura could do seven pushups in 60 seconds. Now she can do 33 in the same timeframe. “I just wanted to look good in clothes again,” said Laura. “I also didn’t want to feel out of breath when traveling short distances.” Although not a runner, Laura has been able to extend her running time from under one minute to 40+ minutes. “I could not have achieved these goals without Fitness Together,” said Laura. “There are times that I don’t feel like working out, but I have a scheduled time to be there, which holds me accountable. Whether you choose to train one-on-one or with a friend, Fitness Together will customize a plan just for you. I really enjoy Fitness Together. I love the trainers, and I love the results.”

12th Annual Run for Autism on April 21 Supports Autism Breakthrough NAN KRICHINSKY

thought her young adult son with autism would enjoy participating in a 5K run. She and her son, Seth, registered for the first annual Breakthrough Run for Autism when she saw that the race welcomed anyone with intellectual and developmental disabilities. A bit tentative about the race, because sometimes those with autism have social interaction or communication challenges, Krichinsky figured those at the Breakthrough Run would be understanding of her son’s behavior. “After the race, I was ready to go home when the awards were being handed out,” said Krichinsky. “Every time someone would receive an award Seth was whooping and hollering. All I wanted to do was crawl into a hole. I thought, ‘Oh, they are going to kick us out.’” Instead, a race organizer asked her Seth’s name and said he had been so enthusiastic that race officials wanted to give him an award. “They called his name,” the relieved mother recalled. “Everyone cheered for him.” Seth has returned for the annual race all but one year, and each year he helps hand out awards and cheer for the race winners. “He is just so happy that he is there,” said Krichinsky. “It’s such a good time. You can just see the joy in his face.” Seth said running, seeing his friends, handing out awards, and being with his new friends, honorary race chair Lori Tucker of WATE-TV and Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett, who he helps with awards, all make the Breakthrough Run enjoyable. Seth plans to help again at the 12th annual Breakthrough Run for Autism on April 21, with Autism Breakthrough of Knoxville inviting individuals, teams, and those with intellectual and developmental disabilities to participate. The 5K Run /Walk and 1-Mile Fun Run begin at 8:30 am at Regal Cinemas Pinnacle Stadium 18 in Farragut’s Turkey Creek. The run, held during National Autism Awareness Month, supports Autism Breakthrough of Knoxville, a non-profit organization committed to helping adults facing the challenges of autism in the East Tennessee region. Lori Tucker, WATE-TV news anchor, will again serve as honorary chair of the run and will be the emcee during the awards ceremony. Happy Lee, a Breakthrough volunteer, is the race director. Autism Breakthrough of Knoxville invites any individual with a disability to register for the run or walk as a Breakthrough Buddy, as Seth does for each race. A Buddy may

request to participate with a volunteer, who will run or walk the course with the Buddy. Breakthrough Buddies receive special recognition during the award ceremony. Community, corporate, and school teams are encouraged to enter, and awards will be given to the largest teams. Teams bring a festive atmosphere to the race, designing their own t-shirts or wearing matching accessories. Families and friends have built teams supporting an individual on the autism spectrum. The Breakthrough Run is held on a flat, certified course through the quiet neighborhoods behind Turkey Creek, with chip timing for the 5K. Autism Breakthrough of Knoxville, started in 1999 by parents determined to improve the lives of adults with autism, provides individualized and communitybased services that offer quality care, a safe environment, family connection, and community involvement in a cost-effective

way. Autism spectrum disorder, a range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech, and nonverbal communication, is estimated to affect more than 2,000 individuals of all ages in Knox County. Autism Breakthrough provides residential services, in-home support, a Saturday therapeutic recreation program, day activities focusing on lifelong education, job skill development, and community integration, and a social group for adults with Asperger’s syndrome. It is the first such organization in Tennessee to provide those services specifically for adults with autism, according to race director Lee. “I can’t tell you how much we all appreciate Breakthrough and how supportive and welcoming they have been with Seth and the family,” said Krichinsky. Seth wasn’t receiving services from Breakthrough when he ran that first race. Now he participates in Breakthrough programs and works at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. Race registration is $25 for adults and $15 for students, and individuals may pre-register online at www.runnerreg.us/ breakthroughautismrunwalk or by mail through April 13. Late registration, after April 13 and in person from 7-8 am on race day, is $30. Register by April 9 to be guaranteed a t-shirt. This race is a participating event in the Run and See Tennessee Grand Prix Series. Results will be posted on the KTC website, www.ktc.org, and the Total Race Solutions website, www.totalracesolutions. com. Single or Multiple Dog Family?

O

FTENTIMES WE’RE ASKED:

“Is it really easier to have more than one dog in a household?” Not surprisingly, there’s no one answer. The decision to bring home another dog is often a decision between no companionship for most of the daylight hours due to family members being at work and school and constant companionship. Because dogs are highly social creatures, dogs in isolation are not usually happy. It’s hard on social creatures not to live with their co-species or not have any social co-species interaction. There are a couple of general rules that will assist in selecting the proper canine friend for your current dog. » Activity similarity is much more important than breed similarity. Look for dogs that have similar exercise capacities and like to do similar things. A dog who’s quiet, shy, and timid and a dog who likes a lot of activity will have a challenge finding common ground. It will be hard if the dogs have different interests and ideas of a good time. » A dog who likes to romp through the woods for hours and a dog who simply enjoys playing fetch for five minutes and then wants back on the couch means you’re going to have some difficulties satisfying the instincts of

both. It makes catering to your dogs’ needs very time consuming. » Similar age doesn’t matter as much as similar health status. A lot of people ask us if bringing a puppy or young dog into the house will “spunk” up their older dog. Well, it depends on what your older dog is up for. An older dog can get revitalized by the younger dog only if the older dog is not sickly or slow with arthritic pains. If the older dog suffers from sickness or arthritic pain, the younger dog might only cause the older dog a great deal of stress. You can’t turn an arthritic ridden pet, in pain, into a frisky young one just because a new dog has lots of energy. Daycare is another good social interaction answer for your four-legged kids. At Ms. C’s, we conduct a personality profile for each of our guests, pairing like/like size and temperament to accommodate a wonderful day of fun and entertainment for each individual preference. CELEBRATING OUR 40TH YEAR I T IS DIFFICULT enough for a

startup company to survive five years, much less 40 years. And if that business was launched by a woman, the survival statistics are no doubt far less. But that is exactly what local entrepreneur, wife, and mom, Brenda Bryan, has succeeded at achieving. This month The Lily Pad in historic downtown Sweetwater celebrates its 40th anniversary – overcoming the inevitable obstacles, including recessions, competition, a busy family life, and, let’s face it, success in a business environment where very few women ventured 40 years ago. Her dreams being greater than these and other obstacles, Brenda has earned a well deserved reputation as one of the area’s most outstanding entrepreneurs, becoming a source of inspiration for many other women who aspire to succeed in the world of small business. We trust that you will enjoy our recent interview with Brenda and that it will serve as a source of encouragement in your own life. EK: When did you first identify your desire to pursue your entrepreneurial, self-employment dreams? B r e n d a : My husband, David, young daughters, Angie and Amy, and I moved to Sweetwater in 1977. With both girls in school, I found the time to pursue my dreams of opening a small boutique in a wonderfully unique environment! It was a perfect way to meet new people, make new friends, and contribute to the local community. EK: When you launched The Lily Pad Boutique 40 years ago, you did so at a time when women owned businesses were a rarity. How did this impact your thinking at that time? Brenda: It honestly never crossed my mind that because I was a female, that it would not work! I believe that everyone, male or female, has the ability to recognize the moment and seize the opportunity to make things happen in their lives. EK: What many people might be unaware of is that you launched your self-employment dreams while raising young children. What challenges did this present? Brenda: Having opened The Lily Pad on a much smaller scale than it is now, it enabled me to be available as our daughters were growing up. Both Angie and Amy worked in the store during their high school and college years, accompanied me on buying trips to various cities, and have been involved in every aspect of the business. 24

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE April 2018

EK: Why did you choose to pursue the ladies’ apparel marketplace? Brenda: When The Lily Pad opened in 1978, every small town across the country had their own ladies and men’s stores, as well as department stores… sometimes two or three of each! We were a novel idea, opening in the main lobby of a newly constructed hotel on I-75. The first thought was to appeal to the tourist traffic and travelers, but very quickly the market grew to local shoppers as well! Many of those still shop with us today, and we love hearing those stories… “Remember that dress I bought when you were at the hotel?” EK: Briefly describe your journey during the last 40 years. Brenda: Fast-paced, I would say! It has been amazing to experience the growth and to know The Lily Pad has been a part of the resurgence of our beautiful downtown area. I am constantly reinventing myself and the shop in the ever-changing world of fashion! EK: What motivated your relocation to historic downtown Sweetwater? Brenda: Having rented or leased for 25 years and constantly improving other people’s property, I decided it was time to buy my own! Sweetwater is a perfectly located small town, allowing us to serve a customer base within the entire East Tennessee Valley. With easy

interstate access, our customers travel easily from Chattanooga, Nashville, Knoxville, and the Tri-Cities areas. Once customers arrive, we’re quick to tell them of all the other amazing shops and eateries in our downtown area. One look at our guest book and you’re amazed by all of the areas we serve! EK: You’ve had several family members join The Lily Pad Boutique team. How has that influenced your plans for the future? Brenda: I feel very blessed that my family understands and loves what The Lily Pad is all about. Having grown up in the business, they are constantly reminded of the bonds and relationships that are formed through a business venture. One daughter, Angie, is a full-time part of our amazing Lily Pad team. Amy is a constant source of support, and selling is in her DNA! My granddaughter, Ivy, will be joining our team this summer, bringing her degree in marketing to take us to that next level! EK: How have you competed so successfully with the growth of online shopping? Brenda: While online shopping offers a great convenience, many women prefer to have complete control of their shopping experience. Women are very sophisticated shoppers and prefer to examine, touch, and try on what they are buying. Beyond the actual shopping, The Lily Pad adds a pleasant social element to their shopping experience. After their first trip, our customers are also, more importantly, our friends… something that is not possible online! EK: What future expansion plans do you have for The Lily Pad? Are there any plans to expand your product offerings or services? Brenda: We have had several inquiries about franchising our brand and expanding into other markets, so with Ivy joining us, the possibilities are endless… stay tuned! EK: What words of encouragement do you have for aspiring women entrepreneurs? Brenda: To quote one of my favorite female entrepreneurs, Estee Lauder, “I never dreamed of success, I worked for it.” Those are the most important and encouraging words you’ll need to carry with you as a business owner, whether male or female!

ORTEO, WHICH MEANS CORTEGE in Italian, is a joyous procession, a festive parade imagined by a clown. The show brings together the passion of the actor with the grace and power of the acrobat to plunge the audience into a theatrical world of fun, comedy, and spontaneity situated in a mysterious space between heaven and earth. The clown pictures his own funeral taking place in a carnival atmosphere, watched over by quietly caring angels. Juxtaposing the large with the small, the ridiculous with the tragic, and the magic of perfection with the charm of imperfection, the show highlights the strength and fragility of the clown, as well as his wisdom and kindness, to illustrate the portion of humanity that is within each of us. The music turns lyrical and playful, carrying CORTEO through a timeless celebration in which illusion teases reality. The cast of CORTEO includes 51 acrobats, musicians, singers, and actors from all around the world.

HE EASTER SEASON has come

and gone all too quickly, and now we find ourselves moving into spring with the celebration of Mother’s Day on the near horizon. Mother’s Day was first celebrated by Anna Jarvis in 1908 at St. Andrew’s Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia. Anna’s campaign to honor all mothers was inspired after holding a memorial service for her mother, who passed away in 1905. To d ay Mot her ’s Day h a s b e c ome a n international holiday to celebrate our mothers and to remember the sacrifices that they made on our behalf. It is one of the busiest days of the year for most restaurants, as many of us celebrate a time honored tradition of taking our moms out for a special Mother’s Day dinner. It is a day that she does not have to prepare a meal or clean up afterwards. Mother’s Day is also a day when we give our mothers a special gift to honor her – a gift that she will cherish for many years to come. Gallery on Main in historic downtown Sweetwater has many special items that will make the perfect gift for your special mom this Mother’s Day. Check out our hand-crafted, one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces or a special painting that she will be certain to appreciate. How about a hand-turned pen that she will treasure with thoughts of you every time she writes a note, a letter, or signs a card? Visit Gallery on Main and discover a treasure trove of unique gifts that you won’t find at the “big box” stores that will make this Mother’s Day extra special.

Help Pick the 10 Plants that Changed Tennessee Nominations Being Solicited to Help State’s Educational Curricula Photo composite courtesy of UTIA

HAVE

A N O P I N I O N about the beauty or utility of the state’s greenery? Researchers with the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture are accepting nominations to help determine a list of the 10 plants that have had the greatest impact on Tennessee. Imagine Florida without oranges or Georgia without peaches. The researchers are looking for nominations of the plants that most represent Tennessee. Members of the public are invited to submit nominations for the “Top 10 Plants that Changed Tennessee.” Participants may submit the name of a single plant that fits into one of six categories: Food, economy, health, history, landscape, and spiritual or cultural. Plants will be judged by their impact – either positive or negative – across the state’s history. Your contributions will be more than

just a fun exercise. Nominations will be evaluated by a panel of experts who will ultimately decide upon an official list of the 10 individual plants that have had the broadest impact on Tennessee. This information will then be used to create educational curricula for Tennessee’s elementary schools on a variety of subjects including biology and history. Natalie Bumgarner and Andy Pulte, faculty members with the UT Department of Plant Sciences, are heading up the project. “Plants influence almost every aspect of our lives,” said Bumgarner. “We eat them, wear products made by them, and sometimes even choose where we live because of them.” Pulte said the project already includes a lesson plan for state teachers to get students in grades K-5 thinking about the importance of plants throughout the state’s history,

including their importance to today’s economy. The researchers sent a letter to teachers in mid February outlining class activities and asking teachers and students to submit nominations by the end of the school year. Nominations from the general public are open through July 31. “We hope to have a definitive list for future curricula by the beginning of the next school year,” said Pulte. Jennifer Richards, a UT Extension 4-H curriculum specialist in the Department of Food Science, is also involved in the effort. The researchers ask everyone to take some time to ponder some plants, then go to the website, www.tenplants.tennessee.edu, and submit a nomination. The submission process is quick and easy, and participants may choose to receive follow-up information on the project by email.

Get It SOLD

Tips for a Successful Open House BY CHRIS MCKENRY

Get Out of Your House When selling your home, allow potential buyers to visualize themselves in your home. Remove everything personal: Family pictures, evidence of pets, etc. Keep it simple for buyers; too often they cannot see past your clutter. Open Space is Fantastic Remove any clutter from your home, including extra furniture such as chairs and tables. By taking away items that are in the way, your rooms appear larger. Even a beautifully appointed room will seem more open with less furniture. Make Repairs If walls need painting, use neutral colors. If you are taking your favorite wall sconce with you, replace it with another less expensive one. Your home should always look finished. Pre-Pack as Much as Possible Emptying clutter from kitchen cabinets and closets gives the illusion that storage is

plentiful. When things are packed in boxes, remove them from the house. If buyers see a wall of boxes in a spare room, they are likely to question why the boxes are there. Invest in the Sell A new master closet system can be very attractive to a buyer. This is a small expense

that yields large returns. If investing in a new closet is not an option, organize your wardrobe to make your closet look its best. Use uniform hangers, categorize your wardrobe, and remove clutter from the floor. Use Professionals Investing in a few hours of a professional organizer will allow “eyes from the outside to give perspective of what you are missing. They help review your clutter so important decisions are made easier and your move is less stressful. Remember that the house should be seen, not the things in it! These simple ideas will help your realtor place a SOLD sign in your yard. Chris McKenry provides custom closet design and professional organizing services to unpack your home.

Let Us Help You Tackle Mount Everest B Y J O H N F I T Z W I L L I A M , C O - O W N E R O F S U R FAC E D O C , I N C .

It’s that time of year again – time for spring cleaning your home! This annual ritual may strike fear and dread in your heart, but it doesn’t need to be painful. If deep cleaning your home seems like the Mount Everest of all cleaning jobs, we can help.

P

ERHAPS YOUR HOME

needs a jump-start. We at Surface Doc have the tools to get your tile and grout, carpet, concrete, and most anything else deep cleaned, sanitized, and ready for nominal maintenance. Once your home is sparkling clean, it’s much easier to keep it that way. After cleansing, the homeowner should

consider sealing. Sealer provides the ultimate protection for most hard surfaces, including natural stone floors and countertops, tile and grout, and many others. Since the molecules penetrate deep into porous materials, they bond permanently together; thus creating a deep barrier of protection. This process protects your floors and hard surfaces from staining, efflorescence, cleaning chemicals, traffic, sunlight, and even high pressure hosing. After a proper sealing, your floor need only be wiped clean with hot water and a microfiber pad. Say “goodbye” to harsh chemicals and stringent cleaning methods, and say “hello” to a beautiful home that is easy to maintain. Here’s how we do it. First, we pre-spray your floor with emulsifier to start the soil breakdown process. Then, we use a combination of heat, pressure, and extraction simultaneously to remove all foreign

John Fitzwilliam

chemicals, grease, build-up, and dirt. The extreme heat breaks down the soil and opens the pores in your floors to remove even deep down build-up. Without the heat and extraction method, one can only penetrate the topmost layer of your floor. With up to 3,000 psi and 15 pounds of suction, dirt is literally blasted out of your tile and taken away immediately. In addition, Surface Doc uses purified water to leave absolutely no residue. Once the surface has been properly restored to a like-new condition, Surface Doc offers homeowners the option to seal floors, which we guarantee for LIFE. We look forward to helping your home reach its finest potential. Call me at 865-567-1986 or visit us at www.SurfaceDoc.com.

A

NYONE WHO’S EVER BUILT

or thought of building a new home can agree with one thing: The process can be dauntless, requiring hundreds of key decisions that will ultimately determine how satisfied you are with your home. Should you have more cabinets or less? A large front porch or save the outdoor space for the lanai on the back of the house? A separate dining area or an open floor plan that includes kitchen, dining, and living areas combined? Can a utility room also serve as a grooming area for pets? Should you consider adding smarthome technology to your house? If your goal is to build a home that you and all members of your family will love well into the future, you’ll need a little guidance to get you there. The key to building a house you won’t regret coming home to lies with your builder. Luxe Homes & Design helps you from start to finish, each step of the way, by showing you how to get exactly what you want at the best possible price. With surprising precision, they can help you perceive room flow, lighting, space, and an assortment of details that most homeowners can be oblivious to. First and most importantly, compile a detailed list of what you want to build. Don’t focus on the size but what rooms you’ll need and how you’ll use them. Think in terms of who (and how many people) will use the room and the furniture you envision in the room. Eliminate all of the things you think you should add because “every house has them” but you’ll never use. Formal living rooms, dining rooms, and large bathtubs frequently fall into this category. Large “glamour” baths photograph well but don’t make it any easier to get ready in the morning. Look for rooms that can serve dual uses. If you only use your dining room for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, maybe that space could be an office for the other 363 days of the year, and the dining table, sans extra leaves, could be the desk. Builder Jenny Blalock’s specialty is helping you eliminate the stress from the building process and making your dream home a reality. Any custom built home should be a reflection of the family that will live there, so Luxe Homes & Design begins each project with a twofold objective: To interpret the client’s needs and desires and to creatively incorporate them into a pleasing and functional dream home. Since most people have only a vague idea of what they want, Jenny will determine information about each client’s lifestyle and tastes and then interpret them. Jenny is there with you during each step of the process to help you refine your options that meet your budget. A home is an investment in your future, so you want it to

spring cleaning your home, don’t neglect your Oriental rugs. They’ve experienced a great deal of use this winter from wet, wintry mix covered shoes, including shoes contaminated with salt used on sidewalks and driveways. And no, simple vacuuming will not remove these accumulated contaminants, which can actually damage your rug’s natural fibers and organic dyes. Genuine, Oriental rug washing is the only proven way to thoroughly clean your home’s valuable rugs, and if you’re a pet owner, rug washing is an absolute necessity. Most Oriental BEFORE AFTER rug customers think that the first goal of Oriental rug washing is to “clean” their rugs. The first goal should be to “safely” wash their rugs. Let me explain. Oriental rugs are far different from their wall-to-wall cousins. Oriental rugs are hand-woven using natural fibers and organic dyes, including, believe it or not, tea and vegetable dyes. While beautiful to admire, Oriental rugs cannot be safely cleaned using today’s conventional carpet cleaning methods. These conventional cleaning systems can actually permanently damage your valuable rugs. At Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning ’s West Knoxville-based Oriental rug washing boutique, we pamper your rugs by using our proprietary 11-step Oriental rug washing process, which assures you of both a thoroughly and safely cleaned rug. If you have not already done so, I encourage you to visit us online at www.superiorofknoxville.com and view our informative video to discover for yourself the Superior of Knoxville Oriental rug washing difference. For all of your Oriental rug washing needs, along with your upholstery and carpet cleaning projects this spring, trust the one company that has put “superior” back into cleaning since 1985: Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning.

T WAS our great pleasure to host

members of the Interior Design Society (IDS), as well as students from area colleges and universities studying interior design, to our February 13th Special Open House at our retail store: Amish Excellence. I wish to thank all who participated for helping to make this event a huge success. As its core mission, the IDS embraces the strengthening and growth of the Interior Design Society through a variety of educational resources and programs and services designed to assist their members on their professional career path in residential interior design. Founded in 1973 in High Point, NC, today the IDS is comprised of more than

2,000 members whose goal it is to develop their skills and talents, to inspire each other, and to have a positive impact on the communities they serve. During the event, we were honored with the opportunity to share our knowledge of some of the finest handcrafted furniture available anywhere in the world by our personally handselected Amish artisans. All of our furniture is hand-crafted, one piece at a time, using only the finest American made materials available. And unlike furniture found in the big retail box stores, all of our furniture is custom made. That means that the homeowner determines the size of the furniture item, wood species, stain, finish, and fabric of every piece of furniture we sell. And even more surprising is the fact that our custom made furniture is similarly priced with similar items found at the “big box stores – and often less. Perhaps the most important message we communicate at Amish Excellence every day is that you can purchase custom made, all hand-crafted furniture that you might have thought was no

longer manufactured today at prices far less than you might have imagined. We sincerely appreciate hosting the Interior Design Society and area interior design students and are hopeful that this and future events will help them better serve their clients during their professional careers.

Shift Your Garage Into High Gear It Starts with the Floor G ONE ARE THE DAYS when

you had to settle for a drab, stained, cement-gray garage floor. Today your garage floor can be as beautiful as any other room in your home. Why consider anything beyond your standard-issue concrete garage floor? » Protect concrete from the harsh chemicals and liquids that leak from your automobile. Even the water, salt, and snow your car brings into the garage promote deterioration and cracking. » Cleaning is easier. Untreated concrete gives off dust, but a flooring system significantly reduces dirt and dust. It prevents materials from cars and your other garage-based activities (gardening, building, painting) from soaking into the porous concrete. » Fill and cover up existing cracks for looks, safety, and protection. » Open up new activities in your garage. It could double as a workout room, gardening center, or children’s play area. » Increase the resale value of your home. For a striking and durable garage floor coating that is easy to maintain, Knoxville’s

PremierGarage can transform an oilstained, pitted, and peeling epoxy-coated garage floor into a showroom quality look. PremierGarage, serving East Tennessee for 10 years, combines its proprietary hybrid polymer flooring system technology with their extensive industry knowledge and experience to provide a high-quality finish that is chemical, stain, and slip resistant. The two-day process starts with technicians who diamond grind the floor to the ideal surface condition to achieve a permanent chemical bond that substantially outlives traditional epoxies. The polyurea

topcoat, which cures two times harder than epoxy, provides a continuous, non-porous coating surface that naturally resists various liquids that may leak from your automobile’s engine. It’s like armor for your concrete floor. Your garage will look more “finished,” and cleanup requires only a hose or mop. Available in hundreds of various chip and color combinations, you can customize your garage flooring to fit your home and style. PremierGarage’s flooring solutions are also suitable for commercial and light industrial applications. Call PremierGarage and discover the affordability of transforming your garage floor. Home really does begin in the garage!

HE CHOICES you have available to

you when you require the assistance of a heating and cooling contractor are likely far more than you might have imagined. But if years of service, training, and experience matter – and they should – the available field narrows rather quickly. With energy costs skyrocketing, efficiency should be your number one priority. That’s why you should select a qualified heating and cooling contractor with the years of training and experience needed to help you achieve your HVAC system’s optimal performance. Every heating and cooling contractor can make your home’s HVAC system respond to signals from your thermostat. But sadly, that’s the highest level of service and efficiency that many customers experience. With 30 years of experience, Gent Heating & Cooling provides an unprecedented level of customer service that most home and business owners no longer thought existed. We are a full-service company that will

In addition to maintaining your system to operate at its peak efficiency, thereby lowering your energy costs, Gent Heating & Cooling has the expertise in replacing your old and worn out HVAC system. We offer you a wide var iety of cost-effective choices, including Trane, Carrier, and Amana, in addition to the all-new comfort solutions from Mitsubishi Electric that offer incredible efficiency, zone control, and air quality. Our Bosch geothermal heat pumps offer the ultimate in Eco-friendly systems. This technology uses the relatively constant temperature of the earth (thermal energy) to provide heating, air conditioning, and hot water. Our backup generators from Honeywell can provide the backup power needed for those unexpected power failures,

available in both natural gas and propane models. Many homes and businesses today, which are equipped with older, less efficient HVAC systems, can significantly reduce their energy costs when replacing these units with today’s high-efficiency units. In fact, it’s possible to reduce energy costs by as much as 50% depending on the age of your existing unit and the new replacement unit you select, allowing you to recover your investment in far less time than you might have imagined. If you’re tired of rapidly increasing heating and cooling costs, or if your current HVAC system just isn’t operating as well as it used to, then I invite you to experience the Gent Heating & Cooling difference. Tennessee Theatre ONG BEFORE she was Carole King, chart-topping music legend, she was

Carol Klein, Brooklyn girl with passion and chutzpah. She fought her way into the record business as a teenager and, by the time she reached her 20s, had the husband of her dreams and a flourishing career writing hits for the biggest acts in rock ‘n’ roll. But it wasn’t until her personal life began to crack that she finally managed to find her true voice. Beautiful: The Carole King Musical tells the inspiring true story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband, Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends, Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Along the way she made more than beautiful music; she wrote the soundtrack to a generation. doors in! The sun is getting stronger, and the days are getting longer. Before you know it, summer will be here, and with it will come the endless ways to have fun right in your own backyard. But are you really enjoying your outdoor living spaces to their full potential? If your outdoor space does not include retractable screen solutions, the answer is most likely no. Here’s why. Homeowners across the country are making significant investments in the design and creation of outdoor “rooms,” including porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanentlyinstalled grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful accent lighting, and even weatherproof artwork. However, the hot afternoon sun and biting insects often keep homeowners and their guests from enjoying their new outdoor spaces to their full potential. Retractable screens provide the perfect answer to this dilemma. By combining indoor and outdoor spaces, these screen solutions enhance and promote the outdoor living experience, allowing people to enjoy the out-of-doors during hot summer days while extending the amount of time they can spend on patios and decks, where biting insects can become a nuisance in the evenings. Large, motorized screens are the perfect solution for blending function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of your home, thereby remaining truly hidden when fully retracted. And the best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish your home’s views or esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many of these retractable screen solutions can be incorporated into virtually any architectural style. Increasing in popularity are different custom color and wood grain finishes that help to blend your screens into your existing interior or exterior color schemes. Also, the screens can be programmed to lower and retract with sun and wind sensors and can be connected to your home’s general building automation system, allowing the screens to come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection is needed. For more information about retractable screen options that will allow you and your family to fully enjoy your home’s outdoor living spaces this year, visit www.tennesseescreens.com.

What’s All the Fuss About Termites? G ETTING PREVENTATIVE termite

treatment is worth a “pound of cure,” as termites cause billions of dollars in damage each year that is very expensive to repair! They feed on wood 24/7 every day of the year (with no holidays!). Termites are often known as the “silent destroyers,” because by the time you realize they are there, significant damage may have been done. Below are just a few examples of the damage termites can cause, and to get rid of them effectively, you need a pest professional. Drywall: If your walls look like they have small pinholes or bubbling paint, you most likely have a termite problem. Structural damage: Termites can damage b a s e b o a r d s, a s well as hardwood, plywood, and slab flooring, causing floors to bow or sag. They can also significantly compromise the stability of a home’s foundation by eating up wood that is part of the support structure underneath the home. This type of structural damage is usually the most expensive to repair. Also, let’s not forget about other pests you’ll soon be noticing with warmer weather such as ants, carpenter bees, ladybugs, stink bugs, box elder bugs, kudzu bugs, and paper wasps. Dayton’s can take care of them all so they stay gone and out of your way! New customers will receive $25 OFF an initial pest control treatment with an annual agreement and $150 OFF a termite treatment with the Termidor® HP Injection System. Dayton’s other services include radon testing and mitigation, CleanSpace® Crawl Space Encapsulation, monthly/quarterly/one-time pest control services, pest control for bed bugs/rodents/wasps/bees, fungicide/moldicide treatments, and VA/FHA termite inspections.

ASTING CROWNS has an established foothold on the contemporary

Christian music (CCM) scene, boasting album sales of more than four million, along with a Grammy Award and 23 Dove Awards, among other accolades. The inspirational music group keeps its lyrical focus on Christianity, while concerts fall in the soft rock range, occasionally tinged with pop influences. The Georgia-based band really took off after the 2003 eponymous effort, which reached double-platinum status and produced three Top 10 singles. Most recently the Christian outfit left the studio with its fifth effort, “Come to the Well,” which includes a track co-written by fellow CCM big shot Steven Curtis Chapman. That collection earned a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album and led to a successful support tour. When they’re not performing across the nation, several of the seven Casting Crowns members enjoy full-time careers as youth pastors at their McDonough, Georgia, Baptist church.

April in the Garden BY LISA GRUGIN

! APRIL YAY HERE!

IS

I know that the calendar says that spring begins in March, but you can’t trust the weather until April. Actually, you can’t completely trust it until May, but at least your odds are better now. If you are new to this area, you may not have expected the roller coaster weather. Get used to it. Those of us who have lived here for a while know that this is typical. No, we don’t always hit 80 in February and then have snow in March, but it does occur surprisingly often. Have patience, and don’t get in such a hurry. Gardening isn’t about instant gratification. There are all kinds of things that can be done in the garden now, so here is your list: » Before you do anything, remember that the average last frost date ranges from April 6th to April 16th, depending on what area you live in. Keep that in mind when planting tender annuals and vegetables. » Finalize your garden plans for the spring. What would you like to add/ subtract/change? If you need help, stop by with some photos and we can make suggestions.

» Examine your plants for damage from the weather, insects, and disease. If a problem has you befuddled, stop by with a sample so we can help you make a proper diagnosis. It is easy to mistake fungus damage for insect damage and get frustrated when insecticides don’t work. It can also be costly to treat for a problem that you don’t have. » Please remember that not all insects are bad. Our frenzy to eliminate bugs has decimated our pollinator populations. Unless they are damaging your plant, sometimes it is best to leave things alone. » Don’t be in too big a hurry to prune out damaged branches or pull up “dead” shrubs. Wait until mid to late April and see what the plant is going to do. Sometimes foliage is damaged, but the plant is still alive. It will push off the old foliage and grow new if you give it time. Here’s that word again: Patience. » Will there be plants that don’t come back? Possibly. Look at it as an opportunity to try something new! » Do you know what is never, ever killed

by bad weather? Weeds! Pull them and/or spray them, then apply a pre-emergent to keep them from coming back. If you are spraying, please follow label directions. Some products require warmer temperatures to be effective. I also advise you to avoid spraying on a windy day unless you want to replace your neighbor’s plants. » Most flower beds would like to have some nice compost, topsoil, or manure mixed in to lift the nutrient levels. Healthy soil = healthy plants. Clay can be hard to deal with (literally), but it is amendable. Important note: Sand + clay = brick! Sand does not make a good additive without other products to keep the molecules from binding. » Trees, shrubs, tough annuals, most perennials, and cool season vegetables can be planted now. If you are a gambler, you can plant anything. If you want to be safe, wait until midmonth to plant the more delicate plants that like their soil to be warm. This includes tomatoes, pepper, and basil. I know that some of you had tomatoes in the ground weeks ago, but I promise they will do better if you wait. Tomatoes planted too early do not have good fruit set. » Since I mentioned vegetables, let’s talk about vegetable beds for a few minutes. It is critical that you do not plant the same plant in the same place! The old idea of crop rotation still applies if you are doing raised beds or container gardens. Most veggies can harbor viruses or bacteria in their roots that may not affect the current year but will devastate subsequent plantings. Move your plants around or replace the soil. In addition, it is also critical that you have a minimum of six hours of sunlight and use drip irrigation whenever possible. Water from overhead irrigation wets the leaves and contributes to fungal problems. » Cage peonies and stake tall perennials while they are small. » Remember our feathered friends. Bring out those birdbaths, and keep them clean and full. Stock up on good quality birdseed, or try a variety of feeders and seeds to increase the bird population. More birds will give you fewer insects! That’s all for this month. If you have gardening questions, please call or stop by so we can help you make good decisions. Also, we’re getting in shipments of plants and garden décor almost daily, so I’m sure we will have things that will work for you. After all, we have been making homes beautiful for more than 22 years!

professionals at Undercover Systems can provide you with the unlimited out-of-door options that the entire family can enjoy all year-round. Spring is the perfect time to install Undercover Systems’ totally unique underdecking ceiling system under your home’s existing raised decks. This totally proprietary and patented underdeck system will ensure that this year’s events will be protected from unexpected and unwanted rain, snow, and the searing summertime sun. “Spring is a great time to weatherproof all of your future outof-door events,” said Jim Conn, owner of Undercover Systems. “Throughout the entire process, our skilled craftsmen work with you each step of the way, from consultation to project completion, until you are completely satisfied. And because each underdeck system we install is custom made by Undercover Systems specifically for your home, you can be assured of many years of trouble-free family enjoyment. This promotes greater deck air circulation and longevity.” You’ll also appreciate Undercover Systems’ attention to detail, which comes from years of experience, as they help you craft a seamless transition from your home’s interior to your new out-ofdoor living spaces, which will perfectly complement your existing architecture and landscaping plan. of the entire Hunt family, as we begin our 6th year in business, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for both your support and encouragement since we launched Premiere Consignment in Tellico Village. In addition to offering you incredible savings on thousands of square feet of quality, name brand, pre-owned furniture, home décor, lamps, Oriental and area rugs, and art from homes in area lake and golf front communities, including Tellico Village and Rarity Bay, Premiere Consignment also offers you access to the world marketplace for selling, powered by eBay. Premiere Consignment provides you with the perfect venue to take full advantage of this growing selling phenomenon. “The key to success in selling many of your household items at the highest price available is to target a marketplace with the largest number of potential buyers,” said Aaron Hunt, Premiere Consignment co-owner. “Through the power of eBay’s millions of buyers, products can often sell much faster and often at a much higher price than you might expect – and with very little effort on your part.” Premiere Consignment has made a significant investment in photographic and lighting equipment, software and computer hardware, and a packaging station designed to bring the power of eBay to you. Here’s how it works: 1. Items are evaluated for acceptance at our intake area at Premiere Consignment. 2. Accepted items receive a tracking number. 3. Ac c e p t e d i t e m s a re p ro fe s s i o n a l l y photographed. 4. Items’ descriptions, pricing, and photographs are entered onto the eBay website. 5. As items are sold, they are carefully packed and shipped to the winning bidder. “The key to success on eBay is to present your item in as professional a manner as possible,” said Aaron. “That’s why professional quality photos and well-written descriptions are essential. The other important feature we offer our customers is our ratings. Ratings are very important to eBay buyers. Because of the quality and quantity of items we sell on eBay, we offer potential buyers the peace of mind that comes from selecting a seller with an established track record. Buyers are often reluctant to buy from a seller with no track record or a limited record.” To learn how to take advantage of a world of opportunity to sell many of your unused household items through Premiere Consignment, powered by eBay, call us at 865-458-9721 or visit us at 320 Lakeside Plaza in Loudon today.

Historic Sites of Grainger County B Y TO N I E N G S T R O M

Grainger County Jail

RIVE INTO THE PAST from

Blaine to Rutledge in neighboring Grainger County. The county was named in honor of Mary Grainger, who became Mrs. William Blount, the official first lady of the Southwest Territory from 1791-1796. Grainger was the second county that was organized after the State of Tennessee was received into the Union, Carter having preceded a few days before. By an act of the Legislature passed on April 22, 1796, contiguous portions of the extensive and unwieldy counties of Hawkins and Knox were severed from those jurisdictions and “created into a separate and distinct county by the name of Grainger.” Come for a visit, there is much to see. Within the 15 miles from Blaine to Rutledge, the past will be on your side. Some interesting historic sites to see include: Janeway Cabin (240 Indian Ridge Road in Blaine): This single-room cabin was constructed about six miles east of here and is the home of John Janeway and his wife, Gertrude. She was one of the last surviving widows of a Union Civil War veteran. She married John Janeway, an officer in the 14th Illinois Cavalry, in 1927 when she was 18 and he 81. Shields’ Station (U.S. Route 11W in Blaine): A tavern was established at the site around 1830. It was acquired by Dr. Samuel Shields, who operated the property as a stagecoach stop, tavern, store, medical dispensary, and post office. Andrew Jackson, Tennessee’s Old Hickory and seventh president of the U.S., stayed there. Poplar Hill, also known as the Cynthia Lea House (Northeast of Blaine): She turned down Sam Houston’s proposal to marry. It’s now a bed and breakfast. You are in the land of historic Lea Springs, 11 miles southwest of Rutledge off U.S. Route 11W, west on Lea Lake Road. Major Lea, Pryor Lea’s father, came to the region in the early 1790s. He traveled with Daniel Boone during his second 52

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE April 2018

Shields Tavern trip through Cumberland Gap. In 1824, Pryor Lea, Major Lea’s first son, served as United States Attorney for Tennessee. Pryor was secretary of East Tennessee College, later known as University of Tennessee, from 1826-1827. From 1827-1831, he served as a United States Representative from Tennessee at the time that David Crockett and James K. Polk were serving. Richland – Albert Miller Lea farm (1760 Rutledge Pike in Blaine): Grainger County’s most famous citizen. Minnesota knows all about him, do you? Bryan House (7995 Rutledge Pike in Rutledge): Built in 1869 for Michael Goldman, who at one time was a merchant in Rutledge and was County Court Clerk of Grainger County from 1885-1872. Nance Building (Junction of Marshall Street and U.S. Route 11W in Rutledge): This substantial Federal style antebellum structure contributed to the development of commerce in Grainger County. Originally a commercial structure, it was probably used as an inn or tavern from its earliest days until circa 1857 and as a general mercantile store between 1857-1897 before becoming a private residence in 1897. Old Grainger County Jail (SE corner of Water Street & TN 92 in Rutledge): Oldest remaining jail in Tennessee. Henderson Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (Church Street in Rutledge): The church building was constructed in 1890. It is a frame building with a gable entrance, a vernacular design that is commonly seen in rural African-American churches built in the 20th century. Presbyterian Church and Cemetery (123 Church Street in Rutledge): Rutledge Presbyterian Church and Cemetery were constructed in 1903. It’s an example of a Folk Victorian style church with Gothic Revival detailing. A one-story, weather-boarded building is with a corner bell tower, shingles in the front gable, and stained glass windows.

Each of the windows has different patterns in stained glass. The cemetery has burials dating to 1864 and surrounds the church. William Cocke House (Northeast of Rutledge): Home of Congressman William Michael Cocke. A member of a politically prominent family, he represented Grainger County in both the Tennessee House of Representatives and Tennessee Senate and served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1845-1849. Ask and we will tell you about the murder. Tate Springs Springhouse (East of Bean Station on U.S. Route 11W in Bean Station): The springhouse is one of the last remnants from Tate Springs Resort, a popular resort of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Grainger County Archives is located on the top floor of the old Rutledge High School building (now the Board of Education offices) at 7850 Rutledge Pike (Hwy 11W) in Rutledge, located 33 miles northeast of Knoxville, on Hwy 11W. Professional Lighting Installation or “Big Box” Retailer… What’s the Difference?

I

S A LIGHTHOUSE Outdoor Lighting® system more attractive and efficient than a “do-it-yourself” lighting system? “Big box” retailers have created an entire aisle dedicated to the DIY landscape lighting marketplace. Consisting of inexpensive, easy-to-acquire lighting fixtures and power centers, homeowners are led to believe they can create a DIY project that’ll look as professional as a neighbor’s home whose landscape lighting system was designed and installed by professionals such as Lighthouse Outdoor Lighting®. Here are some points to consider: 1. Quality – Most lighting fixtures sold at DIY stores are produced offshore from low grade pot metal. They’ll chip and corrode in just a few years. At Lighthouse, we use only the highest grade of cast brass, copper, and stainless steel in our lighting equipment – metals that can withstand the elements and the test of time. 2. Underground connections – DIY lighting has been designed to be easy to connect. While easy to use, these connections provide no waterproofing or protection against oxidation due to water, soil minerals, and air, the number one source of failure. Lighthouse’s 100% waterproof connectors, which can’t be accidentally pulled apart, are

54

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE April 2018

failure proof. Your underground system is as important as what’s above it. 3. LEDs – In the past when mentioning LED, homeowners responded negatively to their cold, blue light output. Lighthouse was slow to adopt LED lighting until its output closely matched that of popular halogen lights. Quality LEDs have been available to the professional lighting marketplace, but the DIY market is still lacking as it pertains to landscape lighting due to the cost of producing quality LED chips with a high color rendering ability. In fact, Lighthouse has created its own line of LEDs that meet our rigorous standards for color temperature and color rendering ability, creating a warm and inviting look. 4. Longevity – DIY lighting systems are designed with planned obsolescence in mind. At Lighthouse, we design and install

a custom lighting system. We never cut corners on the quality of the equipment we use or how we safeguard the system for longevity underground. Our lighting systems, protected by the industry’s most comprehensive warranty, work flawlessly night after night. 5. Professional look – DIYers have difficulty creating a professional look with components found in a ready-to-install kit from the “big box” store. Our experienced and certified master designers know exactly how to assess your home and surrounding landscaping to create the most visually stunning scenes at night. It’s our passion and the only thing we do. A beautifully illuminated home and landscape consists of far more than the sum of its parts. Lighthouse can do for your home at night what your architect did for your home in the daylight. You’ll never find a onesize-fits-all DIY lighting kit that includes passion, training, and experience.

Custom Closets

W

Answers to 5 Common Questions HETHER IT’S a new house

or a home undergoing a few renovations, most Knoxville-area homeowners are choosing to invest in a custom master closet so they don’t have to search through an overstuffed, disorganized closet again. Tailored Living of Knoxville, a local provider of whole-home organization, works closely with area homeowners to design a closet that meets their needs and style. If you’re thinking about a new closet, kitchen pantry, or home office, here are five of the most common questions homeowners ask Tailored Living design consultants: 1. How much does a new closet cost? Products range in price, depending on the color, accessories, and decorative elements you choose, as well as the size of the space. For example, selecting a white finish will cost less than a dark, wood-grain finish, and an off-the-floor system will be more economical than floor standing. Tailored Living works with you to stay within budget and create a system that meets your needs, lifestyle, and wallet. 2. What type of material do you use? All of Tailored Living’s products are made

of high-quality materials and designed with expert craftsmanship to create a long-lasting system. Shelving and panels are made with industrial-grade laminated composite. The custom shelving and cabinetry has a 3/4-inch thermo-fused laminate. This thick finish provides strength and durability. Because it’s laminated, Tailored Living offers a variety of finishes and textures that are not available with solid wood. 3. Do your systems mount to the wall or sit on the floor? To ensure the best stability to stand up to everyday wear and tear, Tailored Living mounts all its systems to the wall. Some cabinets are designed to be off the floor, while others are designed to the floor with crown molding to look like a piece of furniture. Your design consultant will discuss these options with you. 4. Will updating closets and storage areas increase the value of my home? As most real estate agents will tell you, maximizing the functionality of a closet and other storage areas definitely increases the value of a home. When prospective homebuyers see a customized storage area, they can envision their own clothes or belongings

in that space. Adequate storage space is essential, and well-organized closets are extremely valuable. 5. How long does it typically take to install? Installation times vary depending on the size of the project, but most projects are completed in a single day! If installation includes numerous rooms in the house – several closets, a pantry, home office, garage cabinets, etc. – the installation may take one or two additional days. Most importantly, from the owners to each employee, Tailored Living of Knoxville maintains a sharp focus on providing excellent customer service. Call Tailored Living to help you develop beautiful organization!

and Knoxville have a special relationship that goes back many years. In fact, it goes all the way back to when Tommy’s career in America began. So whenever his nearly annual show here in K-town is announced, it’s always a highly anticipated event. Such is the case this year with Tommy’s April 27th show at the historic Tennessee Theatre. I caught up with Tommy to talk about that upcoming show and others on the tour, as well as his new CD, “Accomplice One.” We chatted by phone while he was vacationing in California. “We’re coming back to the Tennessee Theatre,” he said. “One of my favorites. It’s a special place, there’s no doubt about it. It’s made extra special by the fact that my dressing room has Chet Atkins’ name on the door. It’s Chet Atkins’ dressing room. It’s always good to call in the master’s voice. “There are beautiful theaters like that all across America. The Fox Theaters, everywhere, were always the elite theater. The best place to play. But, of course, me playing in Knoxville is like coming home to me, because it’s really where I started in America with the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society. “We started in a little place called Ossili Circle, which was basically a ladies’ bridge club. We got a little stage there and some seats. “I used to go out there to Luttrell, Tennessee, to see where Chet was born and where he was from and visit some of the folks that lived next door and all that. It was a bit of a pilgrimage for me when I was young. And then to play in Knoxville was a great feeling, because I felt like my life was coming full circle almost. I played the guitar, because I loved the music that came out of that area, and now 56

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE April 2018

I’m back there playing it.” Continuing on, Tommy shared what Knoxville fans can expect from the show that will include Amanda Shires. “Obviously I’m going to be playing a lot of new stuff from ‘Accomplice One,’ and Amanda and I will do ‘Borderline,’ and there’ll probably be something else. We’ll have to work that out. She’s going to showcase a lot of her new songs, because she’s got a great new album coming out. I’m going to play stuff from right through my whole career, really. I’m going to take everybody back to the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s, ’90s." Regarding his new CD, “Accomplice One,” Tommy had this to say: “First of all, it’s called ‘Accomplice One,’ which might give you a hint that I did a lot more recording than what is just on that one record. With each of the artists, with the exception of Mark Knopfler, just about every one of the other artists and I recorded more than one song. I figured that we might have an ‘Accomplice Two’ down the road with some of the same people but mix it up with some different people, too. I’ve already got people

like Alison Krauss organized to be on the next album. So that’s fun!” He then shared how his cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze” (with his good friend, Jerry Douglas) made it on the CD. “We had about an hour left before our studio time was up, and I said, ‘Do you want to have a go at Purple Haze?’ and he said, ‘Yeah!’ I played a bit of it for him, and he joined in and said, ‘Let’s not rehearse it. Let’s just play it.’ So we did, and that’s the track. We only played it once.” What’s on Tommy’s radar for the rest of the year? “In April is America. May is England and Scotland. I’m doing a camp in Scotland, up in the Highlands. In June, I’m back recording some stuff. July is some dates here at the Chet Atkins convention and my guitar camp in Memphis. August and September will be in Australia and South Africa. October is Italy, I think. Jerry Douglas is doing that tour with me. November will be France and Clive Carroll, the guy who plays the Irish tunes with me on the album – Clive’s doing that tour. Then in December, I’m back here in America for Christmas. The last three years I did Christmas tours. I’m not doing Christmas tours this year. But I’ll do some solo shows, and I’ll slip some Christmas music in there of course!” Visit www.tennesseetheatre.com for ticket availability for Tommy’s show. Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

Kentucky Rifles of the Great Smoky Mountains B Y R A N D A L P I E R C E A N D LO G A N H U L L

Y

OU ARE INVITED to view

more than 20 examples of southern mountain rifles and pistols at an upcoming temporary exhibit at the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center in Townsend, Tennessee, from May 1 to October 25, presented by the Kentucky Rifle Foundation. These 18th and 19th century tools were essential for the survival of pioneers in the frontiers of Eastern Tennessee and Western Carolina. These southern mountain rifles fully evolved in the last quarter of the 18th and the first quarter of the 19th centuries, as pioneers and settlers moved into what is now Eastern Tennessee and Western North Carolina. In the original colonies during

this time, the Kentucky rifle was becoming an art piece in its “Golden Age,” while on the frontier, the southern mountain rifle had become an unadorned, iron-mounted utilitarian piece. Baxter Bean, whose work exemplified the typical southern mountain rifle, was a third-generation gunsmith who worked in the Jonesboro, Tennessee, area. One of Baxter’s rifles, which will be on exhibit, was brought into Cades Cove by Wilson “Wilse” Birchfield, who named the rifle “Old Bean.” Wilse chose to live high in the mountains just under Gregory’s Bald. When he moved out of the Cove into the mountains, the old timers told him the bears would eat him alive. Wilse’s response to this was, “Old Wilson

may eat some, too.” These rifles, pistols, and accoutrements will be on display May 1 through October 25. For more details and to learn about special programming, call 865-448-0044 or visit www.gsmheritagecenter.org. This exhibit is included in the cost of daily admission to the Heritage Center or FREE to GSMHC members. Also, a special thanks to our sponsor, Blount Partnership.

Macon: “Where the South Rocks” Sign

Cannonball House

MACON, GEORGIA History

Ocmulgee National Monument

Macon was founded in 1823 on the banks of the Ocmulgee River, growing out of the 1806 frontier Fort Hawkins. The fort was named for an Indian Scout sent to the area to set up trading, and the city was named for a beloved North Carolinian statesman. Prior to Fort Hawkins’ establishment, the earliest European contact was in 1540 when Hernando DeSoto came through the area. North America’s first Christian baptism was recorded when priests in DeSoto’s band baptized two Indian boys in the Ocmulgee River near what is now Central City Park. However, Native Americans had inhabited the area for as many as 10,000 years before that as evidenced by the discovery of clovis points at the archaeologically significant Ocmulgee National Monument. Union General George Stoneman came close to Macon, but the city was defended three times before surrendering at the close of the Civil War, preserving its neighborhoods of classic Greek revival and Victorian style homes. Today Macon is a city of diverse cultures, beautiful architecture, an exciting music heritage, and thriving arts and educational opportunities.

A true birthplace of Soul and Southern Rock, Macon holds a storied place in American music history. Little Richard and Otis Redding grew up in Macon and began their legendary careers here, while James Brown recorded his first single in town at WIBB. In the ’70s, Macon’s Capricorn Records introduced the Allman Brothers Band, Marshall Tucker Band, and Wet Willie to rock music fans. Avoid New Tax Law Complacency B Y TO M I R M E N

T HE TAX CUTS

and Job Acts of 2017 gripped headlines right up to its enactment, but much less is heard today of its far reaching impacts on individual and business taxpayers. Many of us are understandably focused on reporting our 2017 tax liabilities and the day-to-day management of our businesses. One word of caution, however: Don’t allow complacency to creep into your tax planning for 2018 and beyond. It could end up costing you plenty. In fact, I would encourage every small business owner to schedule time with their accountant to discuss all of the applicable provisions of this new tax law that will likely impact them. I asked Yvonne Marsh, Certified Financial Planner™ and CPA of Marsh Wealth Management, to elaborate on several of the key provisions of the new tax. Here is her response: The new tax laws generally benefit both individuals and small business owners in the form of higher standard deductions and lower marginal tax rates. The biggest change for small business owners is the introduction of the Qualified Business Income (“QBI”)

Entering into this new tax year without a thorough understanding of the potential impact of the new tax law on our businesses could cost you thousands of dollars and missed opportunities deduction. QBI is generally the earnings from a trade or business. If the business is a passthrough entity (i.e. not a C corporation) and the total taxable income is less than $207,500 for an individual or $415,000 for a married couple, then the owners can take a deduction for 20% of their qualified business income. If those income limits are exceeded, there are additional rules relating to the type of business you own and the deduction begins to phase-out. Notably, this QBI deduction does not reduce your self-employment tax. Other changes for small business owners

include the elimination of the 50% entertainment expense deduction (the 50% meals deduction remains), increased deprecation for business cars, an employer tax credit for paid leave provided under the Family and Medical Leave Act, increased deductions for bonus depreciation, and the limit to expense purchases under Section 179 was raised from $520,000 to $1 million annually. Entering into this new tax year without a thorough understanding of the potential impact of the new tax law on our businesses could cost you thousands of dollars and missed opportunities that perhaps your competition may take full advantage of. If you’ve already prepared your taxes for 2017, schedule a follow-up appointment with your accountant. If you haven’t already completed your 2017 taxes, schedule an appointment with your accountant to discuss the new tax law. If your accountant doesn’t understand the new tax law changes, schedule an appointment with your new accountant.

Business Etiquette 101:

A Professional Seeks to Make Things Right Immediately

W

E ALL MAKE MISTAKES.

Quite often it seems. A professional, however, is quick to acknowledge their mistakes and tries to make things right as quickly as possible. This behavior requires courage, humility, and a commitment to ethical practices. I think we’ve all experienced working with those who have an endless supply of excuses and a fervent determination to avoid responsibility. I hope this is not us. It really is a matter of integrity. Someone with integrity is honest in all things, and that means that they are also honest with themselves and others regarding their performance or lack thereof. I’m not suggesting that we go around each day announcing to the world all of our failures or weaknesses. No, not at all. But what I am suggesting is that we take responsibility for our own actions without blame, without deterrents, and without a desire to 64

deceive in any way. Let’s say that I was responsible for getting a financial report to my boss for a large project coming up and it was due by today at 5 pm. I “dropped the ball” on a few things, and the report is not ready by 5:00. Some people who lack professionalism might: » Avoid their boss for the remainder of the day so they’re not confronted with the missing report. » Blame the delay on information that has not been received from others that is necessary for the report (knowing that it was their fault because they didn’t ask the other people for the information until yesterday). » Blame the delay on untrue circumstances like illness, family emergencies, etc. I think you get the point. While someone with integrity might say to their boss: » “I know you’re going to be disappointed in me, but it looks like I did not plan well and

have let this deadline slip up on me without the report being completed.” » “I am not going to be able to have the report to you by 5:00, which I am extremely sorry for, but will have it to you by 5:00 tomorrow. I have had to reanalyze my production schedule and have made some changes so I can keep my commitments to you in the future. I hope you will give me another chance. I’m really sorry.” I think you get the point. Being honest and ethical does not guarantee job security, but it does guarantee a clear conscience, honor, and self respect. May each of us acknowledge our mistakes quickly and then recommit to improvement.
