From the Publisher IN HONOR OF Father’s Day this month, I am devoting this space to my dad, who will always hold a special place in my heart. He was the best father and role model a little girl could have growing up, and with his passing a few years back, I learned to further appreciate and respect his gentle demeanor, his thoughtfulness, and his love for his family. My dad was and still is my hero. A father is more than just the head of his family and the provider of life’s basics; at least my dad offered more than the basics. He took a genuine interest in the education and upbringing of his two daughters. He was one to be involved and take an active role, like helping with schoolwork when needed, spending an evening playing a board game, or just throwing a baseball in the

backyard. My dad was always there for us. I watched my dad age gracefully. He lived alone for 12 years after my mom’s passing. They were married for 50 years, and while he missed mom very much, he was aware that he needed to stay active and not just sit at home. That active spirit took him well into his 80s until it was time for him to pass on. I now see glimpses of my dad in every elderly man who is a widower shopping alone for groceries or dining by himself in a restaurant. Scenes like this remind me of my dad’s last years. Yes, my dad still remains my hero. He was a husband, father, World War II veteran, and the most decent person I have had the privilege to know. Happy Father’s Day, dad. You’re sorely missed. And a very Happy Father’s Day PUBLISHER + EDITOR IN CHIEF to all dads.

BARIATRIC SURGERY

A LIFE TRANSFORMING WEIGHT LOSS OPTION orbid obesity is a life-threatening disease that affects more than 15 million people in the U.S. A landmark study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that bariatric surgery improved or resolved type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, and high cholesterol in the vast majority of morbidly obese patients. Most patients had lost 55 to 70% of their excess weight one year after bariatric surgery. THANKS IN LARGE part to the leadership of dedicated physicians, other healthcare professionals, and Tennova Healthcare, there is now a comprehensive surgical weight loss program in the Knoxville region designed to help patients who are unable to sustain significant weight loss, have weight-related medical issues, and are ready to make life changes to become healthier. The Tennova Center for Surgical Weight Loss program is the only accredited Level 1 facility by the Bariatric Surgery Center Network (BSCN) Accreditation P r o g ra m o f t h e A m e r i c a n College of Surgeons (ACS) in the Knoxville area. The bariatric suites offer larger than average hospital patient rooms equipped with specialty furniture to provide safe and comfortable accommodations. Surgeons Stephen Boyce, MD, and K. Robert Williams, MD, have extensive training and experience and are qualified to offer all approved bariatric surgical options. “We are pleased to offer a nationally accredited program that has 8

such far reaching medical benefits for patients, family members, and friends,” said Dr. Boyce, Medical Director of the Tennova Center for Surgical Weight Loss. “Bariatric surgery offers hope of a normal life for those suffering from obesity.” “In addition to the clinical elements, Tennova Center for Surgical Weight Loss is designed with the patients and their families in mind,” said Lance Jones, Chief Executive Officer of Tennova’s Turkey Creek Medical Center.

EK: Lance, can you tell us a little about the bariatric program at Tennova? Lance: Our bariatric unit is located on a specialty floor with a dedicated clinical team that works together to coordinate the care, education, and post-surgery follow-up. The Tennova Center for Surgical Weight Loss is very focused on the holistic elements that come from our coordinated

approach. From nursing and surgical services to our support programs, we see this life-changing process and our ability to impact the lives of so many through each individual transformation. This is a service truly focused on the patient, their family, and the support networks. EK: Bariatric surgery includes a number of proven weight loss techniques. Describe them. Dr. Williams: There are four approved bariatric procedures. The laparoscopic adjustable gastric band and the sleeve gastrectomy are both restrictive operations that cause weight loss by limiting the amount of food one can eat. The biliary pancreatic diversion with duodenal switch is a malabsorptive procedure that works by limiting digestion of food after it is consumed. Rouxen-y gastric bypass is considered a hybrid procedure that is both restrictive and malabsorptive. EK: Dr. Boyce, let’s talk about the Roux-en-y gastric bypass procedure and, more specifically, your patient, Sandra Crabtree. Dr. Boyce: Roux-en-y gastric bypass restricts a person’s oral intake and also limits digestion to produce excellent weight loss in many patients. By losing significant excess weight, our patients often see an improvement in co-morbid conditions. These are medical problems that often accompany obesity. In Sandy’s case, her diabetes, hyper lipidemia, and obstructive sleep apnea were eliminated and her hypertension improved. She has a long family history of these problems, and she decided to do something about it. EK: Despite all the fad diets and celebrity-endorsed weight loss programs, why do so many people still experience difficulty in losing weight? Dr. Boyce: This is a complex problem, and there is no easy Photos by D. Roberts Photography

solution. Obesity has become more of a problem in recent years, in part because of a change in environment. We live in a more automated society, and we eat higher calorie foods than our predecessors. More calories and less exercise leads to more obesity, but genes can often play a role as well. It is especially difficult for patients who start with body mass indexes above 35 (roughly 100 pounds overweight). As we know from many studies, only 1% will achieve durable weight loss with diets, even if we add medical supervision. EK: Just who is a candidate for bariatric surgery? Dr. Williams: A good rule of thumb is if a person’s weight is 100 pounds overweight, you are likely a candidate for surgery. Also, people who have medical problems

as a result of the excess weight should consider surgery. It is also important to be committed and motivated. Don’t let anyone tell you it is an easy way out of obesity. It requires commitment and determination. EK: To optimize your opportunity for success, the Tennova Center for Surgical Weight Loss offers both pre- and post-education and support. Why are these so important? Dr. Boyce: Weight loss surgery is really just a tool that a patient will use to achieve success. Like any other tool, the results will not be as good unless you are knowledgeable in how to use that tool, and we put a lot of emphasis on education, because it dramatically affects success. EK: If I feel that I might be a Stephen Boyce, MD, and K. Robert Williams, MD

candidate for bariatric surgery, how can I learn more? Do you offer private consultations or seminars? Dr. Williams: Of course there is a lot of information on the Internet, but you have to be careful about what you read, because some of this is misinformation. We have a large website that is an accurate source for someone looking to learn more. Another great resource is our free seminar series held at Turkey Creek Medical Center. I especially enjoy this, because I get to interact directly with patients who have a desire to learn more about weight loss surgery.

EK: Is there anything else you would like to add before closing? Dr. Boyce: Yes, it is a true pleasure and honor to be able to work as a bariatric surgeon at the Tennova Center for Surgical Weight Loss. As a surgeon, the technical difficulties provide a constant and meaningful challenge, and as a personal note, it is very fulfilling to see the positive change in health and quality of life for our patients.

“I HAVE MY LIFE BACK”

Sick and tired of being sick and tired, Sandra Crabtree had had enough. Three years and 150 pounds later, Sandra has reclaimed her life and her health for herself, her family, and their futures.

“I HAD JUST BEEN diagnosed with diabetes, which

would require medication for the rest of my life,” said Sandra. “I had watched my father battle diabetes and its ill effects – poor eyesight, vascular disease, total kidney failure, the loss of toes on both feet, and the loss of most of one foot. Further complications resulted in pancreatitis, from which he never recovered.”

Stephen Boyce, MD, and Sandra Crabtree

It was soon after a family vacation that Sandra made her life-changing decision. “During what should have been an exciting and memorable family vacation time, I was simply miserable,” she said. “I experienced muscle cramps, from which there was no relief. I also experienced insomnia and extreme thirst. This was my life-changing moment. I couldn’t continue on and didn’t want my husband and daughter to become bystanders as they watched my health continue to deteriorate as I had watched my father’s.” Sandra discussed her concerns with her husband and her physician, both of whom supported her. She attended an educational seminar at the Tennova Center for Surgical Weight Loss and felt the bariatric option was right for her to reclaim her life and her health. Both Sandra and her 10

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE June 2014

husband attended all of the education and instruction classes offered by Tennova to prepare them for their preand post-surgical experiences. “We felt like we were as prepared and educated as we could possibly have been,” said Sandra. “There wasn’t any detail that wasn’t covered. I remained at home for one week and returned to half days of work during my second week post-operative period. I lost weight rapidly and surpassed all normal milestones that my physician set for me. I was down 100 pounds in eight months. I have had a total loss of 150 pounds during the course of one-and-a-half years.” Everything went as planned. “I joined a local health club 60 days out of surgery and have been exercising five days per week since that time,” said Sandra. “I’m off three diabetic medications and was considered by my endocrinologist at six months out to have a ‘history of diabetes.’ I

stopped blood pressure medication and cholesterol medication within a week of surgery. It has been a road to a healthy life. It’s no longer about what size I can buy while shopping or what the scale says, although I still weigh myself on a weekly basis. It’s about health and longevity. I read labels. I know what I eat and how a healthy diet makes you feel. I also know how carbohydrates and unhealthy things make you feel. I enjoy chocolate and some desserts, but I also know what it takes to eat those things. Sometimes it’s worth an extra 30 minutes on the bike or running, and some days it’s not. It’s all about healthy choices, which are well in my control to maintain now. I will never go back to where I was before. I have reclaimed my life and health for my family’s future and myself.”

Biltmore Summer Vacations Are a Thing of the Past, Literally

Step back in time at America’s largest home, where the backyard is even bigger MORE THAN 100 years ago, young George

Vanderbilt was an adventurous man who embarked on building a home for his family and friends far away from the hustle and bustle of city life in New York. All these years later, visitors to Vanderbilt’s creation in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains may vacate their own everyday lives with a summer trip to that exact same place: Biltmore. Summer at Biltmore officially began on May 24 and runs through September 1. The season’s slower pace sets the tone for adventures along the estate’s 8,000 acres, a space that has been preserved and perfected over time. The castle-like, 250-room Biltmore House is open for exploration by all ages, enhanced this year by a new kid’s audio tour for ages seven to 13. Specialty tours go all the way up to the home’s rooftop for breathtaking birds-eye views and down into the basement, where a swimming pool and bowling alley reside.

Summer 2014 Vacation Deals at Biltmore

» Kids 16 and younger receive FREE admission

now through Labor Day, September 1. » Dads receive FREE admission on Father’s Day, June 15, with purchase of an adult or youth ticket. » Seniors receive $15 off admission on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. » Save $15 off the ticket price by purchasing tickets at least seven days in advance of visit; save $10 by booking online one to six days in advance of visit.

Biltmore’s Great Outdoors

Meander through the colorful and everchanging manicured gardens designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, or explore the miles of hiking and biking trails that wind through wooded areas and open fields. Take in mountain and Biltmore House views from a bike, on the back of a horse, while floating down a lazy river, on a Segway, or on a carriage ride. Try your hand at fly-fishing, sporting clays, or get behind the wheel of a Land Rover.

Fun in Antler Hill Village and Farm

Admission to Biltmore includes access to Antler Hill Village Farm and Barnyard, both of which harken back to the 1890s, when families lived on the estate raising crops and livestock and tending to milk and ice cream production 14

at Biltmore Dairy. The Barnyard area is home to blacksmiths, woodworkers, and other craft demonstrations. Kids can also explore Pisgah Playground, a Children’s Maze, and the Land Rover Course for Kids. The Winery hosts a Kids Grape Stomp in the village from 2 to 5 pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

The Winery

Admission offers entry to Biltmore Winery, with complimentary tastings and a production tour. Specialty tours like the Vine to Wine Tour, Biltmore Bubbles Tour, and the Red Wine and Chocolate seminar are available at an additional cost. An exhibition, “The Vanderbilts at Home and Abroad,” is just a few steps away from the Winery and sheds light on the time the Vanderbilt family made Biltmore House their home and their world travels.

Music Under the Stars

Dance under the stars on select summer nights during Biltmore’s Concert Series. Legendary rockers ZZ Top will kick off the 18th annual Biltmore Concert Series on Wednesday, July 30, on the South Terrace. BUTTERMILK SKY PIE SHOP

“A Recipe for Success”

A K E A S O U T H E R N gal from

Memphis who spent summer evenings on nanny’s back porch making homemade ice cream and enjoying her homemade pies and biscuits at meal times and a Missouri farm boy who lived in his granny’s kitchen canning vegetables and fruits and helping bake fresh peach and apple pies and you’ll discover local entrepreneurs and husband and wife team, Scott and Meredith Layton. Founders of the popular Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop in Bearden, Scott and Meredith have combined their culinary passions with their three generations of fond memories from their farm kitchen and back porch experiences as youngsters. Add to this their grandmothers’ recipes, and you’ll rediscover your own fond memories, which will take

you back to your very own childhood. “We bake on-site, using our grandmothers’ recipes, creating the very same pies and biscuits we loved as children,” said Meredith. “It’s an experience that will take you back in time, allowing you to enjoy the same tasty treats you may have thought no longer existed.” So where does the Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop name originate from? “Well, it’s an old Southern expression to describe a cloudy sky with the clabbered appearance of buttermilk,” said Scott. “It’s even more appropriate when you consider that buttermilk is a key ingredient in so many of the items we feature.” Now with two locations in Bearden and Turkey Creek, Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop serves up 4” and 9” homemade pies that include Granny’s Apple, Southern Buttermilk, C h o c o l ate Me r i n g u e , Nanny’s Pecan, and others, in addition to their seasonal pies, including summertime specials Summer Peach and Edisto Key Lime. There’s also their to-die-for, madefrom-scratch buttermilk biscuits, whipped butter, chocolate gravy, and biscuit toppings that will take

you back to your childhood. “Beginning this month, we will introduce seasonal, artisan crafted ice cream from local entrepreneur, Elaine Evans, founder of Elaine’s Ice Cream,” said Meredith. “Available by the scoop, you’ll be able to savor Peanuts & Coke, Strawberry Meringue, and others, all designed with Southern palates in mind.” “We’re also excited for our ‘Pie It Forward’ initiative, which features a special pie flavor each month,” added Scott. “This program allows Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop to give back to our community that has given us so much.” June’s “Pie It Forward” flavor is Blueberry Cobbler, and it benefits the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. “We are so blessed to be able to share our generations-old family traditions with your family,” said Meredith. “We’d like to thank all of you for your support and encouragement, which has helped Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop experience its overwhelming success.” To learn more or to inquire about franchising opportunities, visit www. buttermilkskypie.com.

June 6-22 Knoxville Children’s Theatre 109 E. Churchwell Avenue in Knoxville noxville Children’s Theatre will present a live stage adaptation of the Walt Disney Studios film Aladdin. The play will be performed June 6-22, Thursdays and Fridays at 7 pm, Saturdays at 1 and 5 pm, and Sundays at 3 pm. The show is KCT’s 58th full-scale production and features 21 young actors in the cast. DISNEY’S ALADDIN was the best-selling worldwide film of 1992 and is based on “Aladdin and the Magic Lamp,” a story in the collection 1,001 Arabian Nights. The play features much of the Oscar-winning music from the film, written by Alan Mencken, Howard Ashman, and Tim Rice, including “A Whole New World” and “Friend Like Me.” Agrabah is the City of Enchantment, a place filled with magic, mayhem, and flying carpets. Only in such an exotic place could a street rat like Aladdin become a mighty prince. Jasmine, Jafar, and The Sultan, as well as all the unusual characters of the film, appear in the charming stage adaptation from Music Theatre International. The play is performed by 21 talented young actors from ages 9 to 16. Ethan Turbyfill, a student at Alcoa Middle School, will play Aladdin. Ethan was last seen in memorable roles in KCT’s Little Women and Disney’s Mulan. Emma Lesniewski, a student at Seymour Middle School, will play Jasmine. A.J. Tierney, a sophomore at West High, plays The Genie. Four actors are making their KCT debuts: Betsey Blumberg, Emily Cyrus, Alex Lensgraff, and Joel Paultre. Minimize Probate for Your Heirs Presented by Ali Swofford

PROBATE REDUCES the value of many estates.

It can take more than a year with attorney’s fees/ court costs possibly eating up 5% +/- of a decedent’s assets. Here are some ideas that exempt your assets from probate and it’s costs.1 Joint accounts. Jointly titled property with the right of survivorship is not subject to probate. It simply goes to Ali the surviving spouse when Swofford, PhD one spouse passes.

POD & TOD accounts.

Payable-on-death and transfer-on-death forms are used to permit easy transfer of accounts and securities. The beneficiary has no rights to claim the funds during your lifetime. At your death, the beneficiary will simply need to provide a death certificate and his or her identification to claim the assets.2 Gifts. For 2014, the IRS allows you to give up to $14,000 each to as many different people as you like, tax-free. This reduces the size of your taxable estate. Gifts over the limit count against the lifetime gift tax exclusion of $5.34 million.3 Revocable living trusts allow people to do much of their own probate while living. The grantor – the person who establishes the trust – funds it during their life with their assets and designates beneficiaries. The trust owns the assets, but the grantor, while alive, can use the assets. At death, the successor trustee distributes the assets without probate. Distribution is private.4

Are there other assets probate doesn’t touch? Yes. Accounts with beneficiary designations like IRA’s, annuities, and life insurance.

Update account/policy beneficiaries.

Your beneficiary designations on all retirement accounts and policies need to be reviewed regularly to prevent assets going to someone you no longer trust or love. Beneficiary forms take precedence over wills.5 To learn more about strategies to help you minimize probate, join us for an Estate Planning Breakfast with Attorney Anne McKinney on Saturday, June 14, at 10 am at Classico Italian Restaurant. Recipes to Enhance Absorption BY MICHELLE SAMPLES

Tempeh with Sauerkraut

Getting the Most from Our Food WE’RE ALL FAMILIAR with the cli-

ché that we are what we eat, but there’s a bit more to our makeup than that. It’s not enough just to consume the right nutrients and avoid injurious choices in order to be healthy. Our nourishment must be properly absorbed in a usable form to be beneficial. Properly digested, food is absorbed through the villi of the small intestine and duodenum. However, improperly digested food can be absorbed into the body long before reaching the villi, and this can lead to a less than optimal quality of blood. The human digestive system has several divisions that perform different functions in the process, and how we consume our fare can be as important to our well-being as what we eat. Digestion begins in the mouth where saliva, a slightly alkaline substance, begins the breakdown of carbohydrates. The lack of sufficient chewing when carbohydrates are consumed will result in insufficiently broken down complex carbohydrates entering the stomach, which can inhibit the effectiveness of gastric juices. In the case of simple carbohydrates such as sugar, alcohol, or fruit juice, the salty saliva will enable the sugar to be absorbed right through the mucous membranes in the mouth and therefore enter the bloodstream prematurely. Alternating from the alkaline saliva, acidic pepsin and hydrochloric acid in the stomach begin the digestion of protein. Sugars from refined grains and breads can also be absorbed in the stomach, again short-circuiting the route to the intestinal villi. Continuing the alternating pattern, alkaline juices in the duodenum carry on the process with the breakdown of fats. Finally, acidic measures in the small intestine complete the process.

18

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE June 2014

If proper digestion has taken place all along the way, nutrients enter the bloodstream in the most beneficial way. The single most important factor is proper chewing. Thoroughly masticating all your food not only starts the process of breaking down carbohydrates, but it also conditions the food to be in the proper balance for digestion in the stomach. An abundant amount of vegetables with the meal also provides a buffering mechanism for the breakdown of protein and fat. In the intestines, beneficial bacteria complete the breakdown for a smooth absorption through the villi. There are things we can do to enhance this bacteria, and there are also things we do that impair it. Animal food tends to putrefy before passing through the intestines completely and can be a detriment to the intestinal flora; therefore, keeping animal foods to a minimum can be helpful. On the other hand, various types of fermented foods such as miso, sauerkraut, natto, tempeh, and pickles can help maintain a healthy intestinal flora. The importance of a healthy diet is common knowledge today. But how we eat our food can also determine who we are. You really are not what you eat; you are what you absorb. Note: Consult your healthcare professional before

making any dietary changes. These articles and recipes are not intended to diagnose or treat any illness.

› 1 lb tempeh › 2 shallots, diced › 1 fresh twig of rosemary › 2 cups sauerkraut with juice › 2 tsp toasted sesame seed oil Prepare tempeh first. Place in pan with 1/2 cup water and 1/4 cup shoyu. Add 2 cloves of garlic. Cover and simmer for 30 min or until all liquid evaporates. Remove from pan and slice. To pan add sesame seed oil, shallots, sliced tempeh, sauerkraut with juice, and top with rosemary twig. Cover and simmer for 20 min. Let all juice evaporate. Remove twig and serve with basmati rice.

Sauté Summer Vegetables › 2 beets with tops chopped › 1 bunch Swiss chard, sliced › 3 large scallions, sliced › 1 Tbsp fresh thyme, stem removed › 1 tsp sesame seed oil › 1 tsp shoyu › 1 Tbsp balsamic vinegar To pan add sesame seed oil and scallions. Sauté for 1 min. Add beets first and sauté for 1 min more. Then add all greens, including thyme. Cover and let simmer for 3 min. Add shoyu and balsamic vinegar. Toss and serve.

Rice with Daikon, Carrots, and Onion This dish is great with leftover rice. Prepare medium grain rice with 1 cup rice to 1 1/2 cups water ratio. Take 2 cups of this cooked rice and add to pot with 1 cup water, 1/4 cup each of sliced carrot, chopped onion, and diced daikon. (Dried diakon can also be used and is delicious.) Cover and simmer 30 min. Rice will be creamy and very digestible. Top with sesame seeds, and eat with small amount of pickles for maximum absorption.

From the Couch to Confidence FOUR YEARS AGO I noticed a young lady

walking into the gym, and I immediately knew that I could help her reach her fitness goals. She was very overweight and felt very nervous just walking into the gym. Her hair was long, hiding her face, and the dark glasses she wore hid the embarrassment in her eyes. Sometimes it’s not about getting that perfect body but about getting the confidence to live life to the fullest. When weight weighs you down, life becomes limited. I knew I had to help her. Nutrition was first and foremost. We worked on how to eat healthy foods with the right balance. Then we started moving. There’s not a magic pill to replace exercise. The key is knowing how to exercise effectively. You don’t have to kill yourself on the treadmill for hours. Thirty minutes a day of moderate exercise with a few bursts of intensity is all you need. With a solid nutrition and exercise plan, my new client shed more than 100 pounds. I was so proud. She says I changed her life forever, but she really changed mine. Seeing her walk through the gym with confidence and her head held high was a huge reward for me. She no longer lets

PHOTOGRAPHER FOCUSES ON WEIGHT LOSS SUCCESS WITH BARIATRIC SURGERY K. Robert Williams, MD, and David Roberts

DAVID ROBERTS is another bariatric surgery success story. Long-time readers of Everything Knoxville may recognize David’s company name of D. Roberts Photography from the various photo credits; most notably on the majority of cover images during the past four years. As “one of our own” so to speak, we thought that featuring his bariatric surgery experience as part of this month’s cover story was only fitting. On August 28, 2013, David underwent the vertical sleeve gastrectomy bariatric procedure, or more commonly known as the “gastric sleeve.” The laparoscopic surgery was performed by K. Robert Williams, MD, FACS. The catalyst for David’s decision to undergo the procedure was his wife, Fran, an Emergency Department Registered Nurse, telling him of the New Life Center for Bariatric Surgery’s move to the hospital where she is employed. David was immediately interested. He had struggled with his weight for decades, trying various diets and exercise programs. But he had fallen into the same old pattern of “yo-yo dieting” that always resulted in some weight loss but invariably ended up with the lost weight gained back; usually at a level that was even greater than when he started. During one 20

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE June 2014

period of 2012, he had peaked at just over 300 pounds, so he was strongly motivated to deal with the ongoing problem. “It was more than passed time for a change,” he said. In December 2012, David attended a free introductory seminar hosted by New Life. After the seminar, he met with his family doctor to get a physical and begin the sixmonth medically-supervised diet required by his insurance provider. The physical revealed that David had developed type 2 diabetes sometime early in 2012. That disturbing discovery, coupled with the fact that he already suffered from sleep apnea and was on CPAP therapy, just added to his determination to move forward with the surgery. When he started the supervised diet, he was at 287 pounds. After the initial consultation with Dr. Williams, it was determined that David would undergo the gastric sleeve surgery. The six months went by quickly, and the surgery was scheduled for August 28. On August 14, he started a two-week, very lowcalorie diet of high protein, low-carb foods acquired from New Life for the purpose of reducing the size of his liver to make the surgery easier to accomplish in a less crowded abdominal space. The surgery was performed on a Wednesday. By Friday afternoon, David was at home. Following the procedure, he had a zero-complication recovery. He had to use almost none of the prescribed drugs that were sent home with him to counter what can be consequences of the surgery, such as pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. There were only four tiny incisions

in his abdomen – three for the laparoscopic tools and where the portion of the stomach was removed and one for a drain. All healed very quickly, and his pain was minimal. “I only took the liquid pain meds for three nights after coming home, and even then I really didn’t need to,” said David. “It was more to hedge my bet to sleep well.” The consequences of the surgery were significant. David is now diabetes-free. With the gastric sleeve, between 70 to 75% of the stomach is permanently removed. As David puts it, “It’s as if I have a builtin portion control because of the altered anatomy of a tiny stomach.” Another benefit also resulted from the removal. The majority section of the stomach that was excised is the portion that produces the hormone grehlin, which is considered the “I’m hungry hormone” that signals the brain to eat especially highcalorie foods. “I don’t have the hunger pangs I used to have before the surgery,” said David. “I get hungry, of course, but I don’t feel the overpowering urge to eat. It’s like having another built-in feature – an appetite suppressant – which is great!” David stuck to the regimented plan for the first six months following the surgery that prescribed a diet and exercise routine that was broken into three phases of one month, one month, and four months. Each progressive phase relaxed some of the restrictions on what he could and could not eat and how much. By the sixth month mark in mid-February 2014, he had lost an amazing 115 pounds to bring him down to 172 pounds and was cleared for Phase Four, which is an eating and exercise regimen that he will stick to for the rest of his life. David believes he has been this successful for two reasons. “One, it was something that I really wanted to do and was more than ready for,” he said. “I was very tired of fighting with my weight, so I was highly motivated.” That motivation explains his second reason. “I am a compliant patient,” he said. “I’ve done – and continue to do – what I’ve been told to do from the very beginning. My thought is… these are the experts with years of experience who know exactly what I have to do in order to be successful. It would be foolish of me not to follow their instructions.” The end results speak for themselves, and David sums it up nicely when he says, “At fifty-two, my only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner.” “After” Photographs by D. NATIONAL ORGANIZATION ENCOURAGES KNOXVILLE’S YOUTH TO

RECONNECT WITH THE OUTDOORS The Search for Millennial Leaders to Attend OWN It Summit Begins

RIVER SPORTS OUTFITTERS, Visit Knoxville, and Ijams Nature Center are proud to announce the Knoxville OWN It Summit on June 7 in Knoxville. This day-long, youthled summit will connect young Americans to identify, discuss, and develop environmental literacy and civic engagement by connecting kids to the outdoors. “We are all very excited to have the opportunity to have an Own It Summit event in the Knoxville area,” said Alle Hunter, a student at the University of Tennessee. “Our hopes, aspirations, and goals are to create a wave of outdoor awareness and start a movement to change the way young people view the great

outdoors. We are gathering our peers to help break down the barriers that are keeping Americans indoors.” “Bringing kids out into nature is a big deal for any city,” said Kim Bumpas, President of Visit Knoxville. “Knoxville has an amazing Urban Wilderness that needs to be experienced by kids of all ages.” “River Sports, Ijams, and Visit Knoxville are super excited to host the first OWN It Summit Knoxville,” said Laura Jones, River Sports General Manager. “It is super important to engage young people in the outdoors, as it promotes community and conservation. This one-day summit is just a starting point

for getting our kids and young adults involved in outdoor recreation.” OWN It Summits, which are planned and produced entirely by passionate millennial leaders, will address the regional issues preventing young Americans from spending time outdoors, including cultural relevance, access, cost, safety, and the environmental health of local outdoor spaces. Delegates will select the most creative and impactful projects that solve these problems to receive funding and support from The Outdoor Foundation. Following each Summit, participants will work together in the community spearheading the projects, influencing decision-makers, and mobilizing people to get active and outdoors. Ultimately, the goal is to create long-term change in the relationships young people have with the outdoors. “Outdoor Nation works to ensure that the Millennial Generation and all future generations will enjoy and benefit from a strong connection with the outdoors,” said Chris Fanning, Executive Director of The Outdoor Foundation, the organization that launched Outdoor Nation. “This year we are excited to empower young outdoor leaders to plan and organize their own Summits, allowing them to determine and pursue their own agenda.” Passionate young outdoor advocates interested in participating can purchase tickets online at www.brownpapertickets.com/ event/657489.

June Celebrations at the Art Market

Gallery

When you think of June celebrations, weddings, Father’s Day, commencements, Flag Day, even the Summer Solstice may come to mind. FOR MOST OCCASIONS – or simply for their intrinsic value – the Art Market Gallery offers a wealth of original and affordable fine art and crafts. From unique glazed ceramics and glass art for bridal gifts to wood-turned pens and trout paintings for the new graduate or your favorite fisherman, plus so many other choices in between, everything in this gallery is made one at a time by talented hands and creative minds of East Tennessee artists and artisans. This June, the gallery will also celebrate with two exhibits. The first features recent works by photographer Mike Naney of Knoxville and potter Larry Gabbard of Kingston. Naney uses his geology training and passion for earth science to capture artistic photographic images of ephemeral natural beauty while illustrating an earth science-related concept, principle, or process. Gabbard works with distinctive alternative kilns and firing methods, among them raku, horsehair, saggar, naked raku, and pit firings. He likes fast-firing techniques for their rich variety of texture and color. The second exhibit is a memorial show of paintings by Betsy Worden, a co-founder of the Art Market Gallery and an institution in Knoxville’s art community. A painter, tapestry weaver, and printmaker, she taught at Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts and Knoxville Museum of Art and was a tireless benefactor, officer, and board member for many local, regional, and statewide organizations. Her work is in major collections, among them those of the late President Gerald R. Ford and Second Lady Mrs. Joan Mondale and Knoxville Museum of Art. These exhibits are sponsored by Stuart Worden and an anonymous donor. An opening reception with live music will be held from 5:30 to 9 pm on Friday, June 6, during downtown Knoxville’s monthly First Friday art walk. Art Market Gallery, an artist’s cooperative next door to Downtown Grill & Brewery and near Mast General Store, is wheelchair accessible. Hours are 11 am to 6 pm Tuesday to Saturday, 11 am to 9 pm Friday, and 1 to 5 pm Sunday. Parking in the abutting garage is free on weekends and after 6 pm weekdays. Art Market Gallery

Once men become “spa goers,” they are much more likely to do so on a regular basis, naming the physical and psychological benefits of spa treatments as being necessary. Men in sales seek manicures for better looking hands, men working in high-stress environments look to massage to reduce stress, and men in general are interested in anti-aging facials and on-going skincare. These are just a few of the now common place choices of men. Spa 9700 understands both the differences and similarities of the male/female spa experience. On the Gentlemen’s Menu, you will find services very popular with men like the men’s Organic Sun Damage facial or the Hot Stone massage. Jack Black men’s products allow men to have skincare and body care made especially for them. Spa 9700 also has a custom-built Hydrotherapy Shower featuring an overhead rain shower, 12 body jets, and cold water douse. This shower puts forth 100 gallons of water per minute, a totally relaxing standalone or pre-treatment service. Spa 9700’s private men’s nail room allows both hands and feet to be manicured in private. There are no blow dryers, chemical smells, or other hair salon distractions; just a relaxing and quiet environment perfect for re-charging. Why not give the man in your life the gift of relaxation? Whether he is a spa veteran or it’s his first time, Spa 9700 knows how to make him feel welcome, relaxed, and comfortable. Shop Spa 9700 for Father’s Day gift certificates, or visit www.spa9700. com to view the Gentlemen’s Menu and Father’s Day specials.

As for tops, some great summer 2014 trends include graphic prints and tees, exposed midriffs, and gauzy, oversized styles. Every suitcase should include a lightweight cardigan for cool nights on the beach (or even cooler restaurants). A denim jacket is also a staple paired with dresses, shorts, or linen slacks. Sunsphere Observation Deck Reopens to Welcome Visitors VISIT KNOXVILLE, the City of Knoxville,

and the Public Building Authority have worked together to create an updated experience on the observation deck of the Sunsphere. In addition to basic upgrades, including new floor and ceiling tiles, the observation deck features updated information on the numerous and diverse educational and entertainment opportunities Knoxville has to offer both visitors and locals. “The Sunsphere is the first thing many people see when they come to visit our city and a favorite spot for locals in the community,” remarks Kim Bumpas, president of Visit Knoxville. “We were proud to partner with the city and the Public Building Authority to create a fresh, new experience for everyone.” The structure underwent renovations more than seven years ago. The story of the World’s Fair continues to be told here. In addition, visitors and community members will find fun and informative information as they take in a 360-degree view, looking as far as the eye can see. Regular business hours are 9 am to 10 pm.

“The Sunsphere is a Knoxville icon, and the observation deck offers a breathtaking view of our city and our beautiful, natural landscape,” says Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero. “I want to thank Visit Knoxville for their great work in making it more attractive and informative for visitors.”

Project Overview

The original kiosks that line the perimeter of the observation deck have been updated to feature information on local attractions, as well as historical and fun facts about our city. Two kiosks feature wayfinding and street maps, with convenient QR codes for downloading, and an iPad has been installed in one kiosk to provide and collect visitor information. A gallery of what will become rotating images of iconic Knoxville sites, scenes, and events has been installed along the interior wall. Locals will recognize pictures from the historic Tennessee Theatre, Knoxville Zoo, and Ijams Nature Park, just to name a few. A separate section of the interior wall displays the history of the World’s Fair. Information and

images tell the story of how this “scruffy city” hosted more than 11 million visitors from around the world in what would become America’s last successful World’s Fair. In addition to these upgrades, Visit Knoxville has teamed with Knox County School’s Art Department to develop Knoxville themed murals in the two alcoves located within the space. Each alcove contains a flatscreen TV monitor displaying information on Knoxville. Operations are still running on the fifth floor, location of the Icon Lounge, sixth floor, headquarters for Sunsphere events such as receptions and parties, and the seventh and eighth floors, which house offices for private tenants. 40,000 Lives Impacted East Tennessee Charity Spreading Joy, One Bouquet at a Time SUCCESS IS OFTEN measured by the

numbers, whether it is in dollars earned or objects produced. For Random Acts of Flowers (RAF), success can be measured by the number of bouquets delivered, which will top 40,000 in June. The true success for RAF, however, lies in the innumerable lives improved through the simple act of delivering a bouquet of recycled flowers. RAF began in 2009, when founder Larsen Jay used a personal experience to inspire a simple yet generous mission. After a nearfatal accident of his own, Jay was amazed by the amount of support and encouragement he received as his room filled with beautiful flowers. It dawned on Jay that there were patients around him without visitors or flowers, and it became his personal mission to share the floral encouragement he had received. The bouquets he shared with other patients that fateful day serve as the inElavon U.S. Bank volunteers

spiration behind RAF’s mission to recycle and repurpose flowers by engaging dedicated volunteer teams to deliver beautiful bouquets and moments of kindness to individuals in healthcare facilities across the country. Despite humble beginnings, RAF’s mission now reaches across the country. RAF currently has three branches: Knoxville, Greeneville, Tennessee, and Pinellas County, Florida (Tampa Bay area), with two more cities in development: Salt Lake City, Utah, and Cincinnati, Ohio. The Knoxville chapter of RAF plans to celebrate the mission’s 40,000th bouquet delivered with a special celebratory delivery. In addition, RAF recently announced development in four major markets: Chicago, Silicon Valley, Indianapolis, and Los Angeles. These markets should blossom into functional branches in the near future. “We have grown from small, simple beginnings into a large national charity,” says Jay. “No matter how many branches we develop or how many bouquets we deliver, we remain focused on our mission and the moments of kindness that impact the patients.” A national development office, based in Chicago, is being formed to assist RAF with support and resources for the expected “grow-

ing pains” of a national organization. From four bouquets to 40,000 bouquets and beyond, RAF’s focus remains on the local impact. With each joyful smile delivered, RAF serves area healthcare patients such as this woman’s father: “My elderly father suffers from Alzheimer’s. I had just thought that I should get pop some flowers myself when a gentle knock came at the door. The sweetest lady came in carrying a bright yellow basket full of carnations, hydrangeas, daffodils, and sunflowers. My dad was so excited. He said, ‘Those flowers brighten up the whole room, don’t they?’ It’s amazing how something as small as a basket of flowers can mean so much.” Similar feedback from patients, family, and friends serves as motivation to continue driving RAF’s mission. The delight from receiving a bouquet of flowers is a universal source of happiness, and RAF looks forward to delivering many smiles across the country. To learn more about RAF, become a volunteer, or make a donation, call 865-633-9082 or visit www.RAFKnoxville.org.

ID YOU KNOW that the tem-

perature inside your automobile engine’s combustion chamber can reach up to 4,500 degrees fahrenheit? Or that the temperature inside your vehicle’s exhaust manifold can exceed 1,800 degrees? And that, overall, your automobile’s engine operates at an average of 225 degrees? Automobile engines and their other major components, such as t ra n s m i s s i o n s a n d drive chains, are engineered to perform at these higher temperatures. That’s because of their design and the assumption on the part Rick Berry, Founder of manufacturers that and Co-Owner the vehicle’s owner will perform the required maintenance procedures at the recommended service intervals. This is where most engine and major component failures take place. Maintenance! Poor maintenance can cost you hundreds and even thousands of dollars, not to mention negatively impacting your automobile’s resale value. At Eurotech Knoxville, our total focus is on European motorcars. The precision crafted automobiles are manufactured to exacting standards in order to maintain both their performance and longevity. The engines and other critical components require a level of care not commonly found in most automotive repair facilities or quick lube centers. Our technicians have many years of experience and often have earned multiple certifications to ensure your European motorcar is repaired and maintained correctly the first time, every time. But that doesn’t mean our high standard levels have to cost you more. Just compare our prices to area dealer costs. With summer temperatures on the rise, and with your vehicle operating at levels that could damage its critical components if not properly maintained, doesn’t it make perfect sense to trust the European motorcar professionals at Eurotech Knoxville? Maintain your automobile’s performance and protect your investment by trusting the professionals at Eurotech Knoxville.

CAR LOVERS: TAKE CARE OF YOUR FOUR-WHEELED FAMILY MEMBER Do you view your car or truck as a member of your family? Have you named your vehicle? If so, then consider how caring for your car is similar to caring for your kin. For the most part, caring for your family is pretty straightforward. Watch their diets, keep them clean, fix their bumps and bruises, and they are likely to lead a healthy, happy life. So how do you raise and rear your sedan, SUV, light truck, or mini van? Use your parental prowess and follow some basic guidelines.

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU’RE A CAR OWNER While your human brood does not come with an

owner’s manual, your car does. Read up on your vehicle. Become familiar with the safety features. Know what all the knobs and buttons do and where to refill things like windshield washer fluid and antifreeze. Your owner’s manual provides recommended maintenance schedules and other important warnings, and, by giving it a quick glance, you can save yourself the frustration of not knowing how to program the radio presets or change the clock for daylight saving time.

TREAT THE SCRAPES AND SCRATCHES

When a child stubs a toe or scrapes a knee, you clean it and treat it to prevent bigger problems. It’s the same thing with your car. Your vehicle is bound to see a scratch or two from things like road salt, pebbles, and other road hazards. It’s better to treat these when they are small so rust and corrosion don’t cause further damage. Inspect your car regularly for little dings, then mend them.

34

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE June 2014

WELL-CAR VISITS

Prevention is the best medicine. That’s why you get a yearly checkup. The well-visits monitor your health and prevent illness. You should consider similar checkups for your car. During a regular vehicle maintenance visit, a car care professional will inspect the battery, brake and cooling systems, engine oil and filter, wheels, tires, and more. They will provide guidance on what should be repaired or replaced and when. You may find that a small, less expensive repair made now will prevent a bigger hit to your wallet later and keep your car running longer.

GOOD FOOD AND EXERCISE

After preventive and necessary care, similar to a person, tending to your car comes down to feeding it, cleaning it, and making sure it gets enough exercise. Your vehicle requires fuel to properly run. Some vehicles call for specific grades or types of fuel to operate at an optimal level. Check your vehicle’s owner manual for any specific recommendations. Using a fuel different from what’s suggested can be the equivalent of feeding a child nothing but junk food. It will run slower and be at risk for future problems.

The elements can be rough on your car. Salt, de-icers, and other road treatments can wreak havoc on your vehicle’s finish. So give your car a bath every once and a while, and be sure to clean the undercarriage whenever possible. Also, don’t forget a good coat of wax to prevent sun damage. Finally, your family members need exercise, and so does your vehicle. If your car sits idle for too long, engine problems can occur. Take it for a drive. It’s good for the vehicle, as well as the driver. If you think of your car as a cherished family member, you should take care of it like one. Preventive maintenance, like annual checkups, can make a big difference. It’s also wise to treat nicks and scratches when they’re small and not let them turn into something big. If you approach vehicle care with just a hint of maternal or paternal instincts, your ride will do well for many years to come.

New Research on West Nile Virus and Kidney Disease With an estimated three million people infected with the West Nile virus since 1999, protecting yourself from mosquito bites is a great reason for using Dayton’s mosquito control. New research shows that a person may be susceptible to kidney disease years after they have been infected with the West Nile virus. Another surprising fact is that eight in 10 people infected with the West Nile virus don’t get sick right away. The virus can burrow deep into the body, surfacing years later with a persistent infection that can lead to kidney disease. In a study funded by the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases on those infected with the West Nile virus in the last 10 years, about 40% are now showing signs of kidney disease and lasting West Nile virus infection.

This study suggests that West Nile virus infection not only can persist, but that, like a termite, it slowly and surely gnaws away at kidney function,” says William Schaffner, MD, professor, and chair of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University and president of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases. Dayton’s Mosquito Control Management Program, recommended monthly through October, kills existing mosquitoes and prevents many of the mosquito eggs from becoming biting adults. Dayton’s also guarantees elimination of other warm weather pests such as carpenter bees, ants, wasps, and yellow jackets. New customers will receive $25 OFF on one pest control service for warm weather pests. (Mosquito control discount requires contract through October.) For pricing or to schedule services, call 865-588-6686 or visit www.daytonspestcontrol.com.

June in the Garden WHAT A DIFFERENCE a year makes! Last year I was writing about how cold and wet the spring had been. Now it’s 88 degrees, and our rainfall is actually quite low for the year. I hope those of you that had to replace plants that didn’t survive the miserable winter are watering them well! June is a busy month, so let’s get started on your to-do list: ›› Some of you are still nursing winter damaged plants back to health. Continue to be patient with them. The main issue will be water since root balls were damaged as well as the part above ground. If we’re not getting at least one inch of rain each week, you’ll need to supplement with hand watering or drip irrigation. Don’t add chemical fertilizer now! It’s too late in the year and will cause the plants additional stress. ›› If you haven’t planted yet, now is a great time! Annuals and perennials can be planted throughout the summer. Even veggies can still be planted since the soil was so late to

warm. If you’re planting trees and shrubs, try to get them in soon, but don’t panic: some shrubs such as crape myrtles and grasses actually prefer to be planted when the soil is completely warm. ›› Some annuals are already in need of a haircut. Don’t be afraid to cut them back and fertilize to make them bush back out and start blooming again. Deadheading is also important to encourage reblooming and prevent spent blooms from collecting in the branches and growing fungus and insect colonies. ›› Some perennials have outgrown their ability to support themselves. Cut them back so they’ll be fuller and less prone to flopping. You can also cut back spent flower stalks on iris and peonies and remove dead foliage from spring bulbs. ›› Keep pinching back herbs to keep them bushy and full of new growth. Remember not to let them flower if you’re using them for cooking, because flowering

reduces the flavor. ›› Veggie gardens are either going to be exciting right now or you’ll have reached the “what was I thinking” stage. I’m sure that planting three rows of cucumbers sounded like a great idea at the time, but you may be a little overwhelmed. Weeding, watering, and bug patrol can consume an amazing amount of your day. Remember that you are supposed to work your garden: it isn’t supposed to work you. This means that landscape fabric or other weed barriers and irrigation systems are your friend. ›› This spring is starting out very buggy. Check your plants on a regular basis, and start treatment as soon as you spot a problem. Look for holes in the leaves, sticky leaves, light spots on leaves, and brown spots on the back of leaves. Look for white, fuzzy spots in the crotches of plants or white or brown spots that move. Start treatment with an insecticidal soap. If that doesn’t work, you can move up the toxicity chain. If you can’t figure out what’s going on, bring us a piece of your plant to diagnose. ›› The humidity is breeding fungus already. Powdery mildew had been the first to raise its fuzzy head, but I’m sure the others won’t be far behind. Watch your plants, and begin treatment with a fungicide as soon as the first signs appear. Problem plants will benefit from a systemic product. ›› Impatien Downy Mildew is a non-treatable fungus that is airborne and affects only Impatiens. It came in two years ago from growers outside the state. Our plants don’t have the disease, so we continue to sell them. If you had the disease last year, don’t plant impatiens this year. If you live in a neighborhood where it was a problem last year, don’t plant them. The disease doesn’t spread to other plants and is toxic only to regular Impatiens, not New Guinea or Sunpatiens. ›› Keep your eyes open for Rose Rosette. The disease shows up with deformed stalks that are typically red and covered with hundreds of thorns. Leaves are deformed, blooms are deformed, and it just doesn’t look right. Bring us a section or picture for diagnosis. ›› Pull, hoe, and Preen on a regular basis to keep the weed population as low as possible. ›› It’s grass mowing season, but don’t scalp your lawn! Cutting too short weakens grass and makes it more vulnerable to insects, disease, and weeds. Keep mower blades sharp, and alter the direction in which you mow. Don’t forget to enjoy your yard. Pick bouquets, harvest veggies, and smell the roses. Enjoy the beauty we’re surrounded with. Remember to check our website and Facebook for summer sales and activities.

Open Up Your Outdoor Living Spaces GET READY TO let the outdoors in! The sun is

getting stronger, and the days are getting longer, and with it will come the endless ways available to have fun right in your own backyard. Are you really enjoying your outdoor spaces to their full potential? In most parts of the country, if your outdoor space doesn’t include retractable screen solutions, then the answer is most likely no. Here’s why. Homeowners across the country are making significant investments creating outdoor “rooms” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially designed to be weather-proof. However, the hot afternoon sun and biting insects often keep homeowners away from their new outdoor spaces. Retractable screens provide an answer to this dilemma by combining indoor and outdoor spaces and promoting the outdoor living experience. They provide shade and allow people to enjoy outdoors during hot summer days, extending the time spent on patios in areas where there are lots of annoying bugs that come out in the evenings. Large, motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of a home, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. The best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish the views or esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many of the retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. Increasing in popularity are different custom color and wood grain finishes that help seamlessly blend the screens into interior or exterior color schemes. The screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and be connected to your home’s automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection are needed. For more information about retractable screen options, and to discover how to combine your home’s indoor and outdoor living spaces, visit www. phantomscreens.com.

Now You Have a Reason to… Never Call Us Again UGH… IT’S TIME to clean the toilet…

again. If you have boys, you understand my frustration. At least three times a week I am on my hands and knees scrubbing the porcelain bowl, inside and out. Don’t even ask me about the floor around the toilet. If I had a “gross and disgusting” chore list, this would top the chart. It’s not the act of cleaning the toilet that bothers me so much… it’s the monotony of cleaning the toilet… again. So, when something comes along with a promise of “do it once, and only once”… well, I am all ears. Even though I continue to do laundry, dishes, and clean the litter box, my days of scrubbing the floor have come and gone… even the area behind the toilet! For five years, we at Surface Doc searched the world for a sealer worthy of our stamp of approval – and just over a year ago, we found it. I haven’t seen John this excited over a product since Charmin with Aloe toilet paper. (No, I’m not kidding.) We are so impressed with this sealer that we guarantee it for life.

Surface Doc’s new sealer provides the ultimate protection for most hard surfaces, including natural stone floors and countertops, tile and grout, and many others. Since the molecules penetrate deep into porous materials, they bond permanently together, thus creating a deep barrier of protection. This process protects your floors and hard surfaces from staining, efflorescence, cleaning chemicals, traffic, sunlight, and even high pressure hosing. So here’s how Surface Doc does it. First, they use an effective emulsifier to begin breaking down years of buildup. Then, they use their patented tools for a perfect combination of pressure, heat, and extraction to remove all foreign contaminants from your floors, leaving them clean and sanitized. Once the surface has been properly restored to a like-new condition, John then offers homeowners the option to seal. If you’re like me, you’ll appreciate anything that makes your life easier. Now that we have found the ultimate sealer, we can turn our

attention to giving your home the sparkle it deserves… and teach you how to maintain it. You may never need to call us again! UT GARDENS PLANT OF THE MONTH

Emily Bruner Holly THE UT GARDENS’ selection for plant of

month is the Emily Bruner Holly, or the Ilex x ‘Emily Bruner’ as it’s known botanically. The Emily Bruner is one of many hybrid hollies stemming from crosses of American, European, and Asian cultivars, and it is truly a homegrown selection. The Emily Bruner Holly was patented by Tennessee nursery owner, Don Shadow, a world recognized plantsman and horticulturist. Shadow came across this selection as a student at the University of Tennessee. He named his find after fellow Tennessean Emily Bruner, possibly because of her influential status and publication Ask Emily about Gardening in East Tennessee: A Collection of Emily Bruner’s Horticulture Class Notes from 1970 to 1988. This large holly has been a fundamental plant of Tennessee landscapes for many years. Its durability in various climates, evergreen foliage, and fall/winter red berry display makes it appealing for almost any design. The Emily Bruner grows 20 to 30 feet tall and 15 to 20 feet wide. It has a slow

to moderate growth rate, making it desired for its lower maintenance. Its evergreen leaves are finely serrated around the entire circumference of the leaf. Leaf color is what I consider as glowing emerald, very glossy, and vibrant. A healthy, groomed specimen can almost have an artificial look. Like most other hollies, it can be pruned or maintained in several ways. Beginning early it can be staked and pruned to “standard” or “tree form,” revealing a lower portion of its trunk. It can be sheared, keeping a specific shape or height with foliage starting from ground level, or it can be left alone to grow its natural pyramidal growth habit. Emily Bruner thrives in full-sun to partial shade and is tolerant of a variety of soils. It is a female holly, and the cultivar ‘James Swan’ is its male pollinator. For landscape use, it makes a great specimen or focal point plant in large lawn areas and is great for use as a privacy screen. It also can be a nice foundation plant

for large-scale homes and buildings. Its colorful red berries provide good winter interest in the landscape and a good food source for birds. Emily Bruner is deer resistant, which is appreciated greatly by gardeners in Tennessee. It is also heat, drought, and disease resistant. It is hardy to zones 7-9. Ben Cordes is a horticulturist with the University of Tennessee Gardens, Knoxville. The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit http:// utgardens.tennessee.edu.

Planning Your Outdoor Spaces

Home AS SEEN ON

HGTV

WITH SO MANY of today’s new homes being built

to incorporate gorgeous patio spaces, doesn’t it stand to reason that with a little thought and preplanning, these spaces can become an exciting extension of your home’s indoor space? So where do you begin, and how do you master the design of flowing your indoor and outdoor spaces together? Here are a few things to take into consideration before creating the outdoor space of your dreams!

It all starts with a plan!

It’s generally a good idea to begin this process by first taking into consideration all the possible events your family will want to plan for when they use your new outdoor haven. Large gatherings and family events will call for one type of plan, and, conversely, an outdoor space designed for two to relax and unwind will dictate a totally different set of priorities. As you consider all the activities you want to accommodate in your new outdoor space, you might consider creating specific spaces for specific events. Activities such as outdoor cooking on a grill or customized outdoor kitchen might be best suited in one area, dining in another. Just as on the inside your home, area rugs are a great way to help separate and define spaces. Today’s selection of outdoor area rugs is wide and varied – in many shapes, sizes, and colors! Secondly, creating the right landscape plan to surround your outdoor space is extremely important. Shrubbery, flowers, and architectural accents will all play an important part in the overall design as you finalize your landscape plan. You’ll find that stonework and carpentry choices will be critical components to aid you in creating your perfect outdoor retreat. Why not give special consideration to the plants you choose to surround your space? Just think of the delicious scents you could add to your outdoor space with the right plantings! The sooner you start planning, the sooner you’ll be relaxing and enjoying your newly created outdoor space!

Home Trends Move from Lavish to Practical

HOMEOWNERS SEEM TO BE moving toward a mindset that’s becoming more practical, more grounded in reality. They now have a whole new attitude toward just how much space is “enough.” In the McMansion era, we had square footage for the sake of square footage. Now there’s a strong trend away from that. People want warm, homey, and comfortable. Consumers don’t express a natural inclination for spaces that are small; rather, they’re requesting spaces that are smaller than what they might have asked for just a few short years ago. I call it “right-sized luxury.” Making better use of existing space is proof positive of a shift in consumer preferences in all home sizes. Square footage is far less important than the details, which brings us to these new custom home trends of 2014. #1: High-quality detailing. Architectural detailing that focuses on appropriate scale and proportion is high on buyers’ wish lists, regardless of home size. #2: Come-to-your-senses bathrooms. Some bathrooms are getting simpler. Homeowners aren’t looking for the expansive bathrooms like they were during the housing boom. They seem comfortable doing more with less – removing extra partitions and space between fixtures and using clear glass shower doors and wall panels to visually expand the space. #3: Kitchens are still king. Kitchens sell houses, and many designers use them as the starting point for the rest of the home. Watch for “mega islands” to dominate kitchen design in the coming years. We see some that are massive and double as food prep, gathering spaces, and seating for guests. Also, expect to see more white cabinetry. White is everything – you’ll also see a veritable sea of highly polished white Carrera marble countertops. #4: Specialty rooms. Outdoor rooms for barbecuing and entertaining have been growing in popularity for the past few years. Joining the specialty list is an emphasis on pet-friendly spaces. Pet amenities are everywhere – spaces for dog crates and dog washing. Pets have Photographs by Beth Fellhoelter

become an integral part of home design. #5: Look up, please. When you walk into a space, where do your eyes go first? They go straight, but the natural thing is you want to determine where you are, so you look out and then you look up. Today we are incorporating a lot of vintage barn wood beams in the ceilings, which draws attention to the ceilings and gives them a unique “wow” factor. #6: Room for the whole (extended) family. Multi-generational living is more than a demographic flash in the pan, and even when homeowners aren’t accommodating an aged parent, they’re thinking about their own needs down the road. It shows up not only in multiple master suites, but in thoughtful design choices, such as lowering the microwave so it might be opened more easily by someone

that she wanted it to be in cooler color tones ranging from sea foam greens to gray blues and to try to give it a “spa” feeling. Also on her wish list was a makeup area, an alternative option for flooring in her master closet (for which we chose bamboo flooring in a blue/gray color tone), plenty of lighting, as well as optimizing space for a built-in shower and whirl tub, not to mention new furniture, custom bedding, and draperies for the bedroom.

Before

Our first great find was the color for our bathroom cabinetry, which is also reflected in the bedroom in various elements like the custom upholstered headboard, velvet pillows, and the embroidered design in the drapery fabric. The goal with the bedding was to give it a clean and crisp look but also be washable since they are dog owners. (Yes, we have washable velvet and silk bedding.) We chose grass cloth wallpaper to create an accent wall behind the bed and to give the room some more

texture. The light fixture above the bed reflects a more transitional style and creates an interesting light effect on ceiling and walls. For color contrast, we flanked the bed with two large, black nightstands, which give our homeowners plenty of drawer space. Our flooring choice for the master bedroom and bathroom changes from a plush carpet to tile; however, the wall color between the two rooms remains the same in order to pull the master suite together. An oversized, antique mirror was placed against a bedroom wall, and placing various accessories and family pictures on the walls completed our job. We have to admit this was a very fun project for us, and we want to thank our homeowner for allowing us free reign and letting us help them make their master suite their own special retreat. Oriental Rug Washing

No One-Size-Fits-All Solution

QUALITY HAND-WOVEN and fine machine produced Oriental rugs are works of art representing hundreds of years of traditions that can be passed on from generation to generation. These fine crafted rugs owe their longevity and value to the quality of materials and craftsmanship that goes into each rug, and their longevity can be assured with a few simple steps, including periodic hand washing. But care needs to be exercised in the selection of an Oriental rug washing specialist. Because every rug is unique, crafted from a variety of materials and often dyed using organic dyes, each rug we wash is treated like the unique rug it is. That’s why we hand wash each rug, paying particular attention to its construction, materials, and dyes used, along with other factors. We do not employ a onesize-fits-all strategy that might potentially damage a family heirloom. Instead, each rug washed receives the individual treatment it requires to optimize the final result. Our proprietary washing process allows us to tailor design a washing process that adjusts the pH of the ionized water we use, as well as the quantities and types of cleaning agents we use. Also, all throughout the washing process, your rug is under the direct observation of our trained and experienced technicians. The end result is a rug that is safely and thoroughly cleaned, protecting it for the enjoyment of many generations to come. For Oriental rug owners who experience the occasional pet accident, we can often remove both the stain and any odor that may result. But, to improve the chances for a successful outcome, it is recommended that you act quickly. The sooner a pet accident is discovered and treated, the greater the chance that your rug can be satisfactorily cleaned. If you have Oriental rugs that require cleaning, call us today and learn about our pickup and delivery service that is free to many of the areas we serve and at a modest cost elsewhere.

Liquid Termite Treatments vs. Baiting Systems One ongoing debate in the pest control industry and among homeowners is whether liquid termite treatments or baiting systems offer superior results.

B

AITING SYSTEMS involve the

installation of bait stations at intervals that are designed to attract foraging termites. These stations contain a small piece of wood impregnated with poison with which a termite could eliminate an entire colony. Liquids such as Termidor, on the other hand, are applied as an invisible barrier between the ground on the treated structure. Baiting stations have Winged Termite several deficiencies. First of all, foraging termites could miss the bait stations altogether while still attacking the structure they were intended to protect. Also, bait stations need to be checked every three months, and it is possible, through incorrect handling, to contaminate the wood bait. So it is possible for a home to be infested by termites while the bait stations show no termite activity at all. Liquid treatments, such as Termidor, are your best protection against termite infestation, as they provide a total barrier. Also, because Termidor is undetectable to termites, as they continue to forage, they become carriers of the active ingredient in Termidor, which they transfer to other termites, killing and eliminating them. While both systems have merit, homeowners who rely on baiting systems for termite protection are still at risk for infestation. Your best termite protection and return on your pest control investment is Termidor, which offers superior protection. Termidor waits for foraging termites. Baiting systems rely on foraging termites to randomly discover the station’s bait. For more information on termite protection and all your pest control needs, call Heritage Termite & Pest Service today.

Mold May Be the Source of Your Family’s Health Problems IN AN AREA with such poor air quality at times

(i.e. high pollen, molds, and everyday pollutants), it’s no surprise so many suffer from allergies. Infants who live in moldy homes are three times more likely to develop asthma by age seven. COVENANT HEALTH FITNESS EXPERT, MISSY KANE, LEADS GUIDED HIKES FOR OUTDOOR KNOXVILLE

DID YOU KNOW?

Indoor air quality is responsible for more than 90% of upper respiratory infections. Newly constructed and more energy efficient homes tend to trap air inside, so there are fewer natural “air exchanges,” which in return creates a perfect environment for airborne contaminants.

Buying or Selling a Boat?

W

HETHER YOU’RE buying a new or used boat or considering the sale of an existing boat, there are a great many decisions and considerations. Perhaps the most important decision is whether to “go it alone” or seek the advice of an experienced and reputable boat dealer representative. An experienced consultant can guide you through the many decisions necessary when buying or selling a boat, including: » What is the boat’s true condition? » Does the seller have a clear title? » Is a survey necessary? » Where should I advertise my boat or look for watercraft advertisements? » How can I secure financing? » How should I handle the payment or receipt of funds? » Is this a fair price? » Where is a secure place to meet with the buyer/seller?

Founding Spirits: George Washington and the Beginnings of the American Whiskey Industry A BROWN BAG LECTURE BY DR. DENNIS J. POGUE June 4 at noon East Tennessee History Center THE FORMER DIRECTOR of restoration

at George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate, Museum, and Garden, Dr. Dennis J. Pogue, will discuss the history of the whiskey industry in early America, with a concentration on George Washington’s largely unknown career as a distiller. Washington played a leading role in the whiskey industry’s growth into a major business by the early 1800s, and in 1799, owned the largest distillery in the country, producing 11,000 gallons of clear, un-aged whiskey. Pogue is now an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland and the author of Founding Spirits: George Washington and the Beginnings of the American Whiskey Industry.

62

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE June 2014

The program is free and open to the public. The lecture will begin at noon at the East Tennessee History Center, located at 601 S. Gay Street in Knoxville. Guests are invited to bring a “brown bag” lunch and enjoy the lecture. Soft drinks will be available for purchase. For more information on the lecture, exhibitions, or museum hours, call 865-215-8824 or visit www. EastTNHistory.org.

Lifestyle It’s finally time to start planning for summer fun. So what can you do to make the most of the summer months? Flipping through a celebrity magazine, it’s easy to spot stars on exotic getaways, enjoying the water aboard a mega yacht. But, boating isn’t just for the rich and famous – you don’t have to be a millionaire to get out on the water. Climbing aboard a boat is easier than you may think, and it is one of the best ways to make every weekend feel like a vacation.

MAKE THE MOST OF SUMMER:

THREE EASY WAYS TO GO BOATING 1 › JOIN THE CLUB

Boat clubs are one of the best ways to experience the boating lifestyle. There are thousands of boating clubs and organizations across the U.S. that offer everything from sailing to powerboating and watersports. Members receive access to a fleet of boats for use, plus clubs usually provide maintenance, storage, and boating education.

BOATING IS A POPULAR American pastime, with an estimated 88.5 million Americans getting on the water each year, according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association. What’s more, boating is close to home, with 90% of Americans living within an hour’s drive of a lake, river, or ocean that’s perfect for boating. The reality is there’s a boat for every budget, and for boaters, being on the water creates priceless experiences. Whether it’s fishing, watersports, sailing, personal watercraft, or cruising, spending time on the water with family and friends creates memories for a lifetime. Boating is accessible, and it is important to do your research to figure out what kind of boat fits your budget and lifestyle. One of the best kept secrets is how to get on the water without owning a boat – consider it research, since it gets you on your way to becoming a boater before you own one. Following are three budget-friendly ways to get your feet wet this summer:

2 › GET SCHOOLED

Boating schools and courses are a great way to take the helm and learn the rules of the water. Hone your sailing or powerboating skills by learning the basics in boat operation, and have fun in the process. Check out a list of courses and find one that floats your boat close to home.

3 › TEST THE WATERS

Rental options have come a long way, with hourly or daily rentals to peer-to-peer options making boating even more accessible. Boat renters can now rent directly through boat owners, creating an affordable way to use privatelyowned boats equipped with amenities from insurance to boating education. Another popular option is fractional ownership, similar to lodging timeshares, where members can pre-schedule use of the boat online, and weeklong charters that let you fully experience the boating lifestyle. Don’t get left on the dock this summer. Take advantage of the warmer weather aboard a boat. Whether you’re curious about boating or looking into ownership, explore opportunities to get your feet wet, and experience the fun of life on the water.

6TH AVENUE MURAL

A L O N G T I M E R E S I D E N T of the Parkridge neighborhood, Lynne Sullivan could not help but see the contrast between the new greenway linkage on 6th Avenue and the dark, litter-filled underpass during her morning walks. Located roughly where Hall of Fame Drive crosses I-40, the 6th Avenue underpass acts as a gateway between the historic neighborhoods of Old North, Parkridge, and Fourth and Gill. Throughout the years, it had been little more than a magnet for trash and graffiti, but Sullivan had a plan. She began by forming a mural committee composed of Parkridge residents, and then submitted paperwork for a City of Knoxville Parks and Recreation Challenge Grant. After numerous meetings, several fundraising events to make up the difference in the grant funding, and an artist competition, a design was finally chosen. The winning artist was Per-Ole Lind, a native of Denmark, who at the time lived in East Knoxville. Lind, an artist and graphic designer, had previously participated in shows and exhibitions locally, such as Knox Heritage’s annual Salvage Show. His design, however, wasn’t what the organizers had originally expected. In the competition guidelines, suggested themes for the mural included the old trolley system, the architecture of George Barber, and Standard Knitting Mill. Lind, however, took a more 64

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE June 2014

iconic approach with his bold typographic representations of each of the surrounding historic neighborhoods – one panel each for Parkridge, Old North, and Fourth and Gill, and a final panel for Knoxville. But what appeared on paper was just the idea; the real task would be to turn that idea into a reality. An enormous reality. Lind started by hand tracing each graphic onto transparent sheets that could be used to project the images on the underpass panels. After the underpass was cleaned and primed, a few volunteers armed with sidewalk chalk and paint pens helped trace the graphic outlines at night when the projections could be seen. From there, more than 60 volunteers helped during a six-week period to paint the mural. Each of the four panels measures in at 30 feet wide by 25 feet tall. Ladders, scaffolding, and painting poles had to be used to apply the three layers of colored paint. After the painting was

completed, everything was coated with an acrylic varnish and an anti-graffiti coating. The end result is the product of countless volunteer hours and a source of community pride. The mural has received the Kristopher Kendrick Award from Knox Heritage and an Orchid Award from Keep Knoxville Beautiful. But the mural did much more than beautify a blighted underpass – it has brought neighbors together and proves that determined individuals can make a difference in their community. THE KEY TO A SUMMER VACATION FULL OF AMAZING SURPRISES:

THE TEXAS GULF COAST Summer vacation season is here, and to ensure yours is full of familyfriendly fun, you’ll need to move quickly and be creative. You need some out-of-the-box thinking and a location that’s dependably exciting, affordable, and amazingly diverse. One word: Texas. HE PHRASE “Texas vaca-

tion” probably conjures images of rodeos, cowboys, dude ranches, and the Alamo. The Lone Star State has plenty of all those things, but did you know it also boasts beautiful beaches and outstanding regional cuisine? No single concept completely defines Texas – the state is simply too big and diverse to easily sum up its personality and all it has to offer travelers. Seven distinct regions (each served by a major airport) offer a variety of experiences. Big Bend Country features adventure and scenic vistas in Big Bend National Park. The Texas Hill Country offers exceptional regional wines and the Live Music Capital of the World. The Panhandle Plains, Piney Woods, Prairies and Lakes, and South Texas Plains all boast iconic natural landscapes and rich Western history. But for an iconic summer experience, visitors should consider the hundreds of miles of beaches, water sports, and fresh seafood along the Texas Gulf Coast.

Consider one of these five memorable Texas Gulf experiences: 1. Bask on the beach in the Gulf Coast city of Galveston. Its location along the Gulf affords Galveston more than 30 miles of beautiful beaches and delectable seafood, not to mention the city’s gulf port, a prime location for cruise

ships. Steps away from the beach are some of the city’s most iconic attractions, including Mood Gardens, a 242-acre theme park and educational facility home to a 10-story rainforest and one of the world’s largest aquariums. Visitors will also enjoy the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier, which stretches more than 1,000 feet over the Gulf, offering rides, games, food venues, and more. 2. South of Galveston, Corpus Christi sits at the heart of the Texas Gulf Coast, offering the perfect combination of city life and beachside relaxation. In addition to sailing and strolling along the Corpus Christi Bay, visitors can tour the USS Lexington – famed WWII vintage aircraft carrier-turned museum on the Bay – as well as the Texas State Aquarium, home to hundreds of species educating visitors on the protection and preservation of the environment. You’ll be hard-pressed to choose between spending time outdoors in the city’s parks and wildlife areas or in one of the many great museums and shopping venues. 3. Just east of Corpus Christi, Rockport, Port Aransas, and Mustang Island offer families plenty of fun in the sun. Visitors will enjoy miles of beautiful open beaches, dolphin tours, and a variety of water activities. Nature tourism is at its best on Mustang Island, which has one of the highest bird counts on the Gulf Coast. Port Aransas has an abundance of birding sites, including the Wetland Park, Joan & Scott Holt Paradise

Pond, the Leona Belle Turnbull Birding Center, and the South Jetty, all of which are on the Great Texas Birding Trail. 4. Located at the southern tip of Texas is South Padre Island, one of the country’s most popular beach destinations, given its laid-back ambience and beautiful beaches. Encompassing more than 130,000 acres, the island is famous for its fishing, camping, and windsurfing opportunities. Visitors will also enjoy a variety of other water activities, from kayaking and beachcombing for shells to kite-surfing, jet skiing, parasailing, and surfing. 5. Get outside and get wet! Water parks are a great way to cool down and have some summer fun, and Texas-based Schlitterbahn Waterparks has some great parks along the Gulf Coast. The number one kid-friendly destination in Texas, Schlitterbahn has been named the top waterpark in the world for 16 consecutive years by Amusement Today. Along with locations in New Braunfels, Galveston, and South Padre Island, Schlitterbahn will open their newest park in Corpus Christi this summer, offering families across the Lone Star State opportunities to splash their way to a fun summer vacation. Whatever your requirements for a dream vacation, you can find them in Texas. Plus, ample lodging and transportation opportunities ensure you can find a great deal with a bit of advanced planning. adding to the area’s skyline, but it’s certainly not short on history. Pan for gold at the site of the nation’s very first gold rush at Reed Gold Mine. Relive a civil rights era sit-in at a lunch counter, or stroll down a recreated main street to try on a hat in an early Belk department store at Levine Museum of the New South. Plenty of historic sites such as the Rosedale with its Civil War era docents and Historic Brattonsville with its Revolutionary War re-enactments make for interactive and educational experiences. For a fun take on a historical tour, hop aboard a bicycle or Segway with Charlotte NC Tours for a look at Charlotte’s past, or step back in time with a horse-drawn carriage ride. Reminders of Charlotte’s roots still stand among new office buildings and suburban homes. Check in to the historic Dunhill Hotel in the heart of Center City, originally opened in 1929 as the Mayfair Manor and a member of the Historic Hotels of America, or take in a quiet retreat at the The Duke Mansion, the palatial former home of James B. LUXURY

Lose yourself in luxury in Charlotte. The Mobil Four Star and AAA Four Diamond Ballantyne Hotel & Lodge offers elegant guest rooms, upscale dining at Gallery Restaurant, a redesigned golf course, and a spa with treatments too good to be true. This south Charlotte resort is just a short drive from South Park, the luxury destination for fashion, which offers up some of the best designer labels this side of Manhattan. Just ask Laura Vinroot Poole, owner of Capitol Clothing. Her new South Park boutique, located in the Morrison complex, is the only place in the region to find Balenciaga and Yves Saint Laurent. During the past year, the addition of alfresco mixed-used developments such as the Village of South Park and Blakeney have added to this area and attracted some of the most upscale boutiques in the Southeast. rousing May and October races at Charlotte Motor Speedway, and the boisterous Duke Energy Broadway Lights performances at NC Blumenthal Performing Arts show exactly why Charlotte has a lot to offer. For animal enthusiasts, don’t miss the Lazy 5 Ranch for an up-close look at exotic animals and the Carolina Raptor Center for a lesson on birds of prey. With everything from firework-filled minor league baseball games to adrenaline-rushing adventures at the U.S. National Whitewater Center, Charlotte’s familyfriendly attractions engage, excite, and exhilarate. As for recent enticements, Great Wolf Lodge in Concord combines indoor water park fun, a spa to excite the senses, themed restaurants, and much more. Discovery Place, the premier children’s science museum in the Southeast, revealed a complete renovation in recent years. Affordable hotels throughout Center City such as the new Starwood concept, Aloft, make family getaways easy on the pocketbook. Aloft is located in the mixed-use entertainment hub, the EpiCentre. So skip the dull getaways of yesteryear and prepare for thrills, wonders, and good, plain fun.

The first Ritz-Carlton in North Carolina opened in Center City Charlotte in October 2009. Synonymous with luxury, the hotel features 147 rooms, 12,000 square feet of meeting space, a bi-level penthouse spa, and Bulgari bath amenities. Meanwhile, Charlotte’s flavorful dining scene has become a magnet for inventive and high-end restaurant concepts, thanks in part to the addition of culinary leader Johnson & Wales University. Newer additions including Chima Brazilian Steakhouse, M5 Modern Mediterranean, and Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar bring together cuisine that crisscrosses the globe. Time-tested mainstays such as Bentley’s on 27 with panoramic city views and Mimosa Grill with farm-to-fork fare dish up excellence with a Southern twist.

Suitable for kids big and small (that includes mom and dad), Charlotte is ready to add excitement to family vacations. Year-round happenings unique to Charlotte showcase the city at its very best. One that attracts more than one million people to the region annually is NASCAR. Races including the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race, Bank of America 500, and Coca-Cola 600 draw fans to Charlotte Motor Speedway – a favorite track for drivers, as almost 90% of Sprint Cup teams are headquartered in the area. Leslie Howe

Knox County’s High School Teacher of the Year FROM A YOUNG AGE, Leslie Howe

knew she was meant to work with young people. Years later, that calling has paid off – she’s been named Knox County’s High School Teacher of the Year. “During my college years, I worked as a camp counselor,” said Leslie. “I found that I enjoyed teaching high school students. When I graduated from college and thought about career choices, I couldn’t imagine a life for myself that didn’t involve being around young people.” Leslie teaches computer science at Farragut High School. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA, her master’s degree from Cleveland State University in Cleveland, OH, and she also has a master of theological studies degree from Gordon-Conwell School of Theology. Leslie has also taken courses at the University of Tennessee and Pellissippi State to learn modern computer languages such as Pasca, C, C++, Java, and VB.

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE June 2014

A typical day for Leslie involves waking up at 5 am and beginning her classes at 7 am. “The rest of the day goes quickly,” she said. “I teach classes. When I’m not working with my assigned classes, I administer the math lab. When classes come, I monitor the class along with the regular teacher. When there’s not a class in the lab, I check to make sure the monitor screens are clean and the computers are still working. Throughout the day, I troubleshoot the technology in the math wing, help students with calculator issues, and tutor.” Leslie’s workday technically ends at 2:15, but she usually gets home between 4:30 and 5 pm. “It’s hard to find time to do everything that needs to be done,” she said. “Every day brings new challenges. We teachers are constantly thinking about how we can motivate students and how we can better explain a concept. But I enjoy seeing students learn. I especially like hearing someone say, ‘I get it!’” Leslie is honored and humbled to be named

Leslie Howe, 2014-2015 Knox County’s High School Teacher of the Year, with Dr. Jim McIntyre, Superintendent of Knox County Schools, and Lynne Fugate, Chair of the Knox County Board of Education

the Teacher of the Year, and she’s quick to point out her fellow teachers’ dedication to education. “Being named Teacher of the Year is a very tangible honor,” she said. “I’m grateful for that honor but feel a little guilty. We have many excellent teachers, most of whom go unrecognized. When I walk down the halls of Farragut, I’m overcome with the excellence in teaching that I observe in the classrooms. I find myself thinking, ‘I wish I could have taken Latin, History, Art, French, Physics, etc. from that teacher.’ It’s a privilege and an honor to teach among them. Come on a snow day or some day in the summer and see how many teachers’ cars are in the parking lot.”

Married? Divorced? Widowed?

Develop Your Social Security Maximization Strategy THERE ARE MORE THAN 88 different strategies for maximizing your Social Security benefits. It’s true – that’s why I use special software to help my clients receive the largest benefits possible. For example: Married Couple: A couple approaching retirement age were wondering how to make the best choices relating to their Social Security benefits. Should they claim under their own earning records or utilize the Spousal Benefit option? I showed them they were immediately eligible for an additional $1,000 in monthly benefits by claiming a Spousal Benefit. Divorced Single: During a consultation with a woman preparing to claim Social Security under her own work record, I learned that she had been married for 30 years and divorced 15 years ago. She was eligible to claim Social Security under her ex-husband’s work record since she had (1) been married for 10 years, (2) was over age 62, and (3) was currently unmarried. This strategy increased her lifetime benefits by more than $30,000. Widow/Widower: Most widows and widowers are unaware that they can use claiming strategies to increase their lifetime income too, such as $69,000 for a recent 59 year old widow I helped. Strategies for Everyone: If you wait to claim Social Security until age 70, your benefit will grow by 8% a year between age 66 and 70, providing 32% higher monthly benefits while you’re alive, plus higher survivor benefits, too. At Marsh Professional Group, LLC, we provide comprehensive financial, legal, and retirement planning to individuals, couples, and small business owners for each phase of their lives. If you’re retired or approaching retirement, especially between the ages of 55 and 70, I encourage you to maximize the Social Security benefits. Evaluating Your Small Business’s Advertising Results I’VE BEEN A STUDENT of marketing for

nearly four decades now, most of this time as a self-employed. I say student because you never stop learning. While I studied marketing at the University of Wisconsin, most of what I have learned is the result of firsthand observation. I’ve stated this before – marketing and advertising are two different animals, but the terms are often regarded as synonymous by many small business owners. Simply put, advertising is the vehicle by which you implement your short- and long-range marketing plans. In the absence of a marketing plan, you’re flying blind. Advertising for advertising sake is undoubtedly better than not advertising at all, but it’s not likely that your efforts will be as productive as they might otherwise be. Also, duplicating your competitions’ advertising efforts is not a marketing plan. How do you know if their ad campaigns are successful?

But assuming that your advertising campaign has as its foundation a well-thought out marketing plan, the next step is to monitor and evaluate its results. This exercise is challenging for many small business owners, particularly new entrepreneurs. In our fast-paced, instant gratification society, some advertisers expect instantaneous results, and in the absence of these instant results, they begin making changes to their advertising strategies just as the campaign is being launched. Other advertisers receive phone calls or book appointments from their advertisements, but because a sale does not result, they often place the blame with the

advertising platform that they selected. Perhaps it’s time for you to “reboot” both your marketing and advertising plans. Begin with the basics. Start with a wellthought out marketing plan that will lay the necessary groundwork for an effective advertising strategy. Finally, be realistic. You’re not likely to hit a grand slam your first time at bat in the majors. Be patient. Give your strategy time to succeed. If your advertising generates phone calls and appointments, yet fails to produce the sales you had hoped for, something else is likely at work. You can have a professional writer create your resume, but you’ve got to go on the interview by yourself. How’s your price points, image, presentation skills, quality, etc.? These are all important questions to ask yourself when you’re evaluating your small business’s advertising results.

Consistency is Key MANY PEOPLE love roller coasters. They are often the featured attractions at popular theme parks around the world. The very point of a roller coaster is to be scary. The more a ride takes your breath away, the better it is for those who enjoy the ride. No matter whether you love them or run from them, you understand what they are all about. My first boss was Tina. Her personality was much like a roller coaster. Up some days, down others, Tina was always unpredictable and sometimes scary. There was no way to anticipate her moods other than to try to read her body language and facial expressions when she got out of her car each morning. We knew by her initial step towards us what kind of day it was going to be for those under her supervision. Inconsistency is not good for relationships. While we all have good days and bad, we cannot afford to become the roller coaster others seek to avoid. Our goal should be to become authentic people who demonstrate self-control while learning productive ways to manage frustrations. It’s important to develop self-discipline while factoring in ways to seek a balance.

AT WORK: Have a same sex confidant. Elicit the trust of someone who is wise, even tempered, which allows you the freedom to grow while also becoming a trusted confidant. Set aside time with this person regularly. Then, when you feel the need to vent, remember your session is not until Tuesday. Hold it until then. You are making an appointment to give your emotions attention but at an appropriate time and place. It will help contain unvented emotions while giving them a voice at the same time. AT HOME: How often have we taken misplaced anger out on some undeserving loved one? We are all guilty. Exercise! It relieves stress. Also, since pent up frustrations wreak havoc in homes, talk to others who can help: counselors, experienced people, or friends who listen well. Join groups with similar interests. Be with others striving to create consistent environments that foster calm

and comfortable. It’s important to create intentional outlets where you can maximize opportunities to become stronger and mentally fit. Frustration is normal. Learning to manage stress maximizes key relationships and character growth. Skills like time management and effective leadership are common topics in today’s self-help environment and career momentum. Add to those skills both mental stamina and consistency. Intentionally building relationships that are strong and predictable brings a sense of fulfillment and contentment that builds confidence. Tina was one of my first teachers in forming my career. From her I learned that influence is important and to leverage it carefully every day. Her inconsistency taught me the importance of mastering the art of consistency. While I might want to ride a roller coaster, I don’t want to be one. Consistency is a key in striving to be your best each day.

Unplug and Go Outside

The Importance of Being Outdoors GIVEN THE CHANCE to choose, most kids would opt to be indoors instead of outdoors. They want to be close to entertainment sources and electrical sockets. Mom and dad are probably not that much different. While the days of telling your kids to go outside and play by themselves are long gone, kids do need to spend time outdoors. Research has shown that kids who spend time outside are calmer, happier, healthier, and less likely to be overweight. They also tend to be better students and more creative. Exposure to sunshine and nature helps everyone, not just kids. It may seem that today’s hectic pace makes it nearly impossible to make time for your kids to play outside. After all, there are meals to cook, housework to be done, an endless to-do list, and more. Yet, 45 minutes to an hour of outdoor time is crucial for a child’s development, and all of the “chores” can truly wait. Here are some ideas to get you started on making outside time easier to manage. Make an inviting outdoor space that is safe

and age appropriate. A wading pool, climbing structure, or sandbox can keep kids entertained for a long time while you sit and unwind after a day of work. If you live where you are unable to add these types of things to your outdoor environment, think outside of the box. You can fill up a bucket with water and give your child cups and funnels to play with, or give them a pack of sidewalk chalk to color with, ropes to play jump rope, or balls to bounce. Even a bottle of bubbles to blow can keep a kid happy. You can also go to a nearby park or large grassy area and just let your children run and play for an hour or so. When it comes time for planned family activities, include outdoor things in your plans. Play kickball or tag, ride bikes together, go on a picnic, camp out in the backyard, go fishing, chase fireflies, or just take a walk together. Not only will you and your children reap the mental and physical health benefits, but you’ll also be creating family memories. When you are outdoors having family time, make it a rule that cell phones and gadgets be

turned off. If you don’t, most kids will just sit around outside with their noses in a screen – regardless of what’s going on around them. Mom or dad can keep their phone turned on in case of an emergency. But, do lead by example, and keep your phone interaction to a minimum. Some of the best family times that many of us probably remember from childhood are those that involved little or no money. Those memories probably also took place outdoors while interacting with family and family friends. Every child should have the chance to make those types of memories. You can make that happen for your child. Unplug from the indoors, go outdoors, and let life happen. Wendy Jackson is a freelance writer based in Blount County, Tennessee. Addressing Adults WHAT’S THE ETIQUETTE RULE regarding how children should address adults? Children should address adults by their last name with an appropriate title like Mr., Mrs., Ms., Dr., etc. For some reason our society is encouraging children to address adults by their first name with an occasional “Ms.” in front, like “Ms. Angie.” Why are we doing this? Why are we taking away more opportunities for children to show respect towards adults? Why are we blurring the lines between adults and children? Why do we think that having a child call us by our first name, like “Ms. Monica,” somehow makes our relationship closer instead of the child calling us by our last name, like Mrs. Irvine? I notice a whole lot of complaining from adults that’s directed to the fact that children don’t show respect towards authority anymore or towards parents, teachers, and other adults. Do you know who I blame? Yes, us. I absolutely disagree with the thought process that we can have a more intimate relationship with a child if they call us by our first name. Does it change the relationship? You bet it does. But it doesn’t change 74

the relationship in a way that’s beneficial to the child or the relationship. Children are in need of guidance, wisdom, direction, support, love, and acceptance. They need role models, not more buddies. Children and adults can have an amazing relationship as the children understand the role of the adults in their lives. Out of respect and honor, children address adults by their last name. When children learn to stand for adults, answer “yes ma’am” or “yes sir,” and when they learn to allow adults to go in front of them, they are being given a gift. This gift is the gift of respect for self. It comes when we know we’re being kind and participating in a small act of kindness to help those around us know how we feel about them. If more adults remembered their roles as adults to children and stopped trying to get on equal ground with them, we would see healthier relationships between those children and adults. If you’re insistent about a child calling you by your first name, although I hope you aren’t, the proper way to approach this is to approach the parent of the child and ask their permission for their child to call you by your

first name. Only with a parent’s permission should an adult notify a child of this desire. If a parent doesn’t wish their child to call you by your first name, please honor that. No one should ever interfere with how a parent is teaching and raising their child unless the child is in some type of danger. Let’s do our part to help children have healthy, respectful, and appropriate relationships with all adults by starting with the proper way to address one another. Fat Reduction That Fits WITH SUMMER just around the corner, many of us start thinking about how we are going to look in our warm weather wardrobes. Frequently, unwanted body fat taints this image. Fortunately, the science behind the removal of unwanted body fat has evolved. There are now scientifically proven, non-invasive and minimally invasive procedures to help individuals obtain their ideal body shape. If you can pinch an unwanted inch, the revolutionary Liposonix device may be just the answer to what diet and exercise alone have not been able to accomplish. Liposonix is a new device that utilizes focused ultrasound energy to non-invasively permanently

destroy body fat. “1 hour, 1 treatment, 1 size smaller” is the moniker for this treatment. In controlled studies, Liposonix patients lost an average of one to two inches from their waistlines, with maximum results seen within eight to 12 weeks. The treatment takes approximately one hour, and there is no downtime. In fact, there are no post-treatment restrictions, and most patients can leave the office and immediately return to their normal activities. Liposonix is different from other non-invasive body contouring devices that can be limited in their ability to treat certain areas of fat and may require several hours and multiple treatment sessions to adequately address problem areas. The Liposonix system is highly versatile, allowing control over precisely how and where energy is delivered for a truly customized treatment in a single one-hour session. While

Liposonix was cleared in the U.S. by the FDA in 2011, it is backed by 10 years of extensive study. It has been featured on Dr. Oz, 20/20, The View, and in many of the top beauty magazines such as Allure, Vogue, and Elle. For those that need to lose more than an inch or two, tumescent microcannular liposuction may be the answer. This in-office, minimally invasive procedure, which utilizes only local anesthesia, was pioneered by a dermatologist in 1985 and is now considered the worldwide standard for liposuction. SmartLipo and SlimLipo are two well-known devices that have been cleared by the FDA for the destruction of fat (laser lipolysis). These devices serve as an enhancement to tumescent microcannular liposuction, promoting easier fat removal and better skin contraction. After SmartLipo or SlimLipo, most patients are able to return to work in two or three days. Virtually any area with excess fat can be treated. The neck, arms, abdomen, love handles, and thighs all respond beautifully to this procedure. Patients often ask me how much weight they are going to lose with

these procedures. I try to explain that these are body contouring procedures, not weight loss procedures. It is also very important that patients maintain a healthy lifestyle after these procedures. Even though fat is permanently destroyed, if a patient gains weight, the fat must go somewhere, and it probably won’t go where you want it to.
