ITH FATHER’S DAY

coming up on the 19th, I have been thinking a lot about the concept of “following in your father’s footsteps” - whether that means literally, like going into the family business, or figuratively, like having the same values and principals. Photo by Mirtography Our feature this month, Fleenor Security Systems, is a good example of following in your father’s footsteps. Will Fleenor is now vice president of the business his father, Norman, began more than 50 years ago. Fleenor Security has long been known as a company of integrity and awesome customer service that began with brothers Norman and Mike and is now carried on by Will. What a legacy! According to NPR, many more daughters, as well as sons, have now begun to follow their fathers into family businesses and professions. I had a strange epiphany when I realized that my brother and I now

have careers “in marketing,” something that our dad did for DuPont for many, many years. We both have a strong sense of the importance of family and of doing well in our professions - no doubt passed on from our own father. A good friend recently lost his dad and was then compelled to sort out their often difficult relationship. He made a conscious decision to focus on the positive outcomes of their time together, the overall message of love that his father strived to convey - much of it in hindsight, as we all tend to get more perspective as time passes. As it is written, “honor your father… so you may live long and it may go well with you…” So take the lessons and know-how that you got (or are getting) from your own dad and improve upon it as each generation should strive to do.

Giving You One Less Thing to Worry About

F

LEENOR SECURITY Systems is celebrating its 50th

year in business and has grown to be the 62nd largest security company in the nation by taking care of their customers and employees alike. Fleenor Security of Knoxville is now back at their previous address on Cogdill Road in the Dutchtown/Murdock business area. Everything Knoxville was interested in their evolving presence here in Knoxville. Vice President Will Fleenor, son of owner and President Norman Fleenor, gave us some of the company’s back story and why he believes Fleenor Security has been a trusted East Tennessee family-owned business for more than five decades. EK: Fifty years is an impressive run! How did Fleenor Security Systems begin? Will: My grandparents had a cattle and chicken farm in Bristol. My dad, Norman Fleenor, the oldest of three boys, always had a passion for electronics - including aeronautics - and, as it turns out, not so much for chickens! He got his commercial pilot’s license, became VP of a large furniture manufacturer, but continued to dabble with electronic security systems at night. Before I was born, he decided to devote his time and talents to his fledgling security business that ran out of his basement. During the early 1970s, Fleenor Security continued to grow, needing a larger space to house the tremendous amount of support and professional service that my dad wanted to provide for his customers. The Johnson City office has been in operation ever since.

Vice President Will Fleenor (standing) with Branch Manager Andre Duhaime and Operations Manager John Smith

EK: How did you become a part of the family business? Will: Beginning in the early 1990s, I worked at Fleenor as an installation technician during my school holidays and summer breaks. I joined the business full time after graduating from UT Knoxville - working in all areas of the company. I was eventually named vice president and am now proud to have led the company to double digit growth. EK: Did the Knoxville Fleenor Security Systems branch off of the Johnson City location? Will: In the early 1980s, my uncle, Mike Fleenor, joined the business in Johnson City, where he too fell in love with the industry. He then moved to Knoxville to start his own branch of the company, building a business that served thousands of area residents and business owners and where many of our current staff got their start. Uncle Mike sold his Knoxville business in 2015 to a regional security company. He was unaware that the regional company would soon be absorbed by a large national company who moved all operations out of state - including service calls and monitoring. At that point, Fleenor Security Systems of Knoxville ceased to exist. EK: Why bring Fleenor Security back to Knoxville?

“Through years of hard work honing our skills and industry knowledge, we know what it takes to design, install, and monitor the systems that protect our clients, their families, and their businesses. We do not take this accountability lightly!” Photos by Morgan Hayley Photography

Photos by ?

Will: We decided it was important to offer the level of service and accountability that was no longer available in the area and opened a new branch in December of 2015. I was fortunate to be able to hire many of the previous Knoxville Fleenor team that our customers have known and relied on for many years. The Knoxville team is led by Branch Manager Andre Duhaime, an industry veteran who knows the importance of customer focus and the worth of the right team members. The Knoxville location has experienced record growth - enough to warrant relocating to the prior office building on Cogdill Road. EK: Why has Fleenor Security Systems been such a long-term successful business? Will: Our Fleenor family has always known that the “secret ingredient” to a thriving organization is the people that make up the company. Our success is directly attributable to the talents and gifts of our wonderful team members. We also know the value of doing what we say we are going to do. Our policy has always been to under promise and over deliver. Fleenor Security understands that the systems we install are responsible for protecting lives and property so we must be ready when it counts. We do not outsource our monitoring to mega stations that handle thousands of accounts from many different security providers like many other companies do. We believe it is important to have our dispatchers trained, managed, and employed directly by Fleenor Security to ensure the best possible support for our customers. Our goal has always been to create a healthy and thriving company where we care for our clients and our team by creating a culture that positively affects all those we serve. A quote by James Penny sums it up: “It is the service we are not obliged to give that people value most.” We want to delight each client with the unexpected small things that make a big impact. EK: What lies ahead for Fleenor Knoxville? Will: We will continue to retain our knowledgeable talent - it benefits the company and our customers, in addition to serving as a huge advantage in our industry. We only market products that we have vetted and know are dependable and solid. That, coupled with providing world-class, local customer service through our UL listed Central Monitoring Station, means our customers can depend on us now and in the future.

Fleenor is focusing more on the Internet of Things (IoT) since businesses and homes are increasingly using IoT to operate more efficiently, be better connected, and have the ability to enhance their own services. We will also continue to look for acquisition opportunities as we enter new markets. EK: Anything else you would like our readers to know? Will: To sum it all up - we are a locally owned, 2nd generation, family business who cares about every single one of our customers. I recommend calling our awesome sales representatives to discuss how we can help solve your security needs either by installing a new product or service or by taking over the monitoring of your existing system and adding the Fleenor touch. I am confident that if given the opportunity to earn your business, you will experience the Fleenor Security difference with the peace of mind knowing that your family, belongings, pets, and assets are well monitored! Fleenor is always ready when it counts. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

THE BENEFITS OF LOCAL SECURITY SYSTEM MONITORING: • Live operators to answer incoming calls, 24 hours a day. No voicemail when you call direct. Devin Taylor, President, and Ben Johnson, Vice President

• Top quality team members who care about our customers, hand-picked by Fleenor. • Our customers are our own. We know you, and you know us. • Local event awareness - like severe weather and power outages - that keeps you better informed. • Direct contact with service department so customer needs or questions get handled. • No need to make a second call if after hours technician is needed. We handle it for you.

Quality You Can Stand On Garage Floor Coating

W

E’VE ALL SEEN it: The house that is the epitome of curbside appeal, that is until the garage door opens, revealing a disorganized mess. If your garage’s main purpose is random storage, maybe it’s time to repurpose all that valuable space. PremierGarage of Knoxville can help you transform your overlooked and underused garage into functional living space, starting with a custom garage floor to take your garage from frantic to fabulous. Why consider anything beyond your standard-issue concrete garage floor? • Protect concrete from the harsh chemicals and liquids that leak from your automobile. Even the water, salt, and snow your car brings into the garage promote deterioration and cracking. • Cleaning is easier. Untreated concrete gives off dust, but a flooring system significantly reduces dirt and dust. It prevents materials - from cars and your other garage-based activities (gardening, building, painting) - from soaking into the porous concrete. • Fill and cover-up existing cracks for looks, safety, and protection. • Open up new activities in your garage. It could double as a workout room, gardening center, or children’s play area. • Increase the resale value of your home. For a striking and durable garage floor coating that is easy to maintain, Knoxville’s PremierGarage can transform an oil-stained, pitted, and peeling epoxy-coated garage floor into a showroom quality look. PremierGarage, serving East Tennessee for more than 15 years, combines its proprietary hybrid polymer flooring system technology with their extensive industry knowledge and experience to provide a high-quality finish that is chemical-, stain- and slip-resistant. The two-day process starts with trained technicians who diamond grind the floor to the ideal surface condition to achieve a permanent chemical bond that substantially outlives traditional epoxies. The polyurea topcoat, which cures two times harder than epoxy, provides a continuous, non-porous coating surface that naturally resists various liquids that may leak from your automobile’s engine. It’s like armor for your concrete floor. Your garage will look more “finished,” and cleanup requires only a hose or mop. Available in dozens of various chip and color combinations, you can customize your garage flooring to fit your home and style. PremierGarage’s flooring solutions are also suitable for commercial and light industrial applications. Discover the affordability and beauty of transforming your garage floor. Home really does begin in the garage!

Neuropathy Relief is Possible “I had been to many, many doctors after years of pain and numbness in my feet without getting any relief. I really look forward to coming in for my treatments because after each one, my condition improves. I can now sleep at night without having to get up and walk around until the numbness subsides.”

D

R S . A .J . and Monica Sarrat, owners of West Knox Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine, answer some of the most common questions about Peripheral Neuropathy and explain how their clinic specializes in alleviating the disabling symptoms. What is peripheral neuropathy? Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the small nerves in the feet and hands, often causing pain, numbness, tingling, and the most debilitating symptom, balance problems. This damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet. Every part of the body relies on blood for oxygen and nutrients. Without it, the body begins to lose function. When the blood vessels that surround the nerves become diseased, they shrivel. This prevents the nerves from getting the nutrients necessary to survive. The nerves begin to degenerate and no longer conduct sensation adequately. When these nerves begin to “die,” they cause you to have balance problems, pain, burning, pins and needle sensation, and a variety of other symptoms. Are there any other causes of peripheral neuropathy?

16

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

June 2022

Yes, there are three broad categories to consider. The first and most common cause of peripheral neuropathy is due to diabetes. The second category would be autoimmune conditions, where your body starts to attack itself and the small nerves can get damaged in the process. The third category could be considered environmental and would include things like excessive alcohol use, certain medications, chemotherapy, and radiation, among others. What is the “typical” treatment for peripheral neuropathy? The most common treatment your medical doctor recommends for peripheral neuropathy is prescription drugs. While these may temporarily reduce your symptoms, medications such as Gabapentin/ Neurontin, Lyrica, and Cymbalta are primarily antidepressant or anti-seizure drugs.

These drugs may cause you to feel uncomfortable and have a variety of harmful side effects. Many patients tell us that they do not feel any improvement while taking them either. How can West Knox Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine help? Our program to reduce your symptoms and speed healing uses a combination of Acupuncture, ATP Resonance BioTherapy, and other proven treatments. Acupuncture helps to stimulate the blood vessels and the peripheral nerves so they are able to receive proper nutrients needed to heal and repair. Collectively, these treatments function to increase blood flow, stimulate nerves, and expedite recovery and healing. What are the main factors to consider to effectively treat peripheral neuropathy? It helps to know what the underlying

cause is so we can tailor our treatments even more. We also like to know the amount of sustained nerve damage. These two factors will help us determine how much treatment is required. Who are good candidates for these treatments? At your initial consultation, we will conduct an exam that consists of detailed sensory nerve testing and an analysis of neurological findings. After the exam, you will meet with the doctor to discuss your results and determine if you are a good candidate for our program. How many people have you helped with these types of treatments? We have given hundreds of thousands of treatments like these to patients for almost 20 years and only take on cases that we believe we can truly make a significant improvement in their lives. We are often asked if we turn some patients away, and the answer is unfortunately yes, if we do not think we can help them. How long will it take for people to see improvement? The amount of treatment needed to allow nerves to recover and regenerate varies from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed history, neurological, and vascular evaluations.

children or grandkids again. Who should reach out to you for treatment? This life impacting condition affecting millions of people can be helped and even reversed. Whether the neuropathy is chemical in nature, due to diabetes, or mechanical such as disc disease or arthritis, treatments are available to help alleviate your suffering. We are excited to bring cutting-edge, non-surgical, natural pain interventions to Knoxville. If chronic pain is impacting your life, medications may not be your only solution. We will evaluate your specific needs, then a customized treatment plan will be created specifically for you. Don’t wait until it’s too late! What is the next step for people with neuropathy? Call our office at 865-275-2444 to make an appointment to determine if your nerve pain can be treated. We have helped thousands of people just like you. You don’t just have to live with it.

What are long-term goals for treatment? We want to increase blood flow, stimulate the nerve fibers, decrease pain, and improve balance. If we can accomplish most or all of these goals, we can help you get your life back by increasing your activity levels. Knox Farmacy 5 Years Fresh

I

Denton & Lori Lesslie love to eat. They are Knoxville natives who have fun finding and experiencing local food and drink spots while sharing their adventures @somewhere.inthe.south.

T’S TIME to head on over to your local Farmacy at 5018 Kingston Pike to taste the goodness of super fresh, made-from-scratch modern southern food. This chef-owned restaurant opened in June 2017 and will be celebrating five years this month! Knox Farmacy is not only about captivating culinary creations, but creating the experience of enjoying time together. We love how they use local sources to create their fresh fun foods. When we cook at home, it’s a therapy session. There’s conversation, music, dancing, venting about the day behind us, thinking about the day ahead, beer and cocktails, and laughter. It’s endearing to read how owner Bettina Hamblin experienced her kitchen adventures growing up. “This wasn’t Mom putting dinner on the table for a 6 o’clock meal,” said Bettina. “This was music, wine, eating, and conversation.” Same! Bettina started catering in 2008 and realized what a unique opportunity she was given. “Families and friends were gathering to share these meals, all while building memories with each other. I saw that within these fleeting moments, something magical happens. A light bulb turned on for me and forever changed the way I feel about food, eating, and cooking for others. I have worked to bring these philosophies to life in our kitchen at Farmacy.” What delicious creations have we tried? We’ve gobbled up the Black & Blue Fries, and just wow,

these are something special. If you like wedge salads, then Farmacy’s wedge is a no-brainer. Looking for a good sandwich? Then go for their next-level french dip, the Good Ole Boy. This was so good, we actually drank what was left of the au jus. Did we actually just admit this in writing?! We’ve also had their wonderful burgers topped with fresh, surprising flavor combinations. And the tacos with chicken - we can’t even find the words for how tasty and full of freshness these are. Like cocktails? We tried the Remedy Sour and loved it. All we can say is an out loud “YES!” to all the deliciousness you’ll find at this fun, inviting, local love. Make a note of their specials: Taco Tuesday with tacos and margarita specials (4 pm-close), Wine Wednesday with 1/2 priced bottles (4 pm-close), Chicken & Spinach Enchiladas all day Thursday with LIVE jazz (6:30-8:30 pm), Lobster Rolls all day Friday, and Saturday/Sunday brunch with LIVE jazz Sunday (12-2 pm)! Give this super good vibes restaurant a follow, go check them out, and tell them Somewhere in the South sent you! Follow us as we venture out from Somewhere in the South to join us for more local food, drink, and life adventures @somewehere.inthe.south on Instagram and Facebook! Reclaim Your Tile & Grout Floors

I

BY CHRISTINA FITZWILLIAM, C O - O W N E R O F S U R FAC E D O C , I N C .

F YOUR FLOORS are dingy no matter how much you clean them, we can help! Did you know that the more often you clean your tile and grout floors, the dingier and dirtier they appear? Over time, dirt and contaminants are absorbed into the porous surfaces of your floor. Cleaning chemicals often have the same effect. Your floor acts as a sponge and absorbs all sorts of foreign matter and locks it deep within where no amount of scrubbing will help its appearance. The unsuspecting homeowner will often try all sorts of cleaning chemicals in hopes of success, all the while making it worse. Sadly, traditional cleaning methods simply are not able to extract the grime that is embedded in your surfaces. If you are wondering how dirty your floors really are, simply compare the grout in an unused corner to the rest of the floor. You may be shocked. It takes a three-step process to extract the grime embedded below the surface. High heat opens the pores in your floor. Powerful suction draws the dirt out to be whisked away. High pressure and a quality emulsifier are also needed to complete the process of removing all the junk below the surface. ONLY the perfect combination of heat, extraction, and pressure will be effective. Many homeowners opt to have their newly cleaned floors sealed. Surface Doc’s sealer provides the ultimate protection for most hard surfaces, including natural stone floors, tile and grout, and concrete. The sealer’s molecules penetrate deep within and bond permanently together, creating a deep barrier of protection. John and his crew are experts at cleaning inside and out. They can tackle the biggest jobs, from kitchens and bathrooms to the driveway, pool, and deck. Surface Doc has become the leader in this area for hard surface restoration, as well as carpet restoration. The estimate is free, and the service is affordable and effective. Visit www.surfacedoc.com to see before and after photos, as well as streaming videos of John’s cleaning tools in action. Turning Chaos into Calm

I

S YOUR CLOSET a jungle of clothes? Here is the thing about cluttered closets: Most people think of closets as “out of sight, out of mind.” Just close the door. Nobody will see it. However, YOU see it! There’s lost time scouring the closet for missing items and a financial drain of replacing things you can’t find. In fact, research shows there is a physiological impact as well. If you’ve got closet clutter, you’ll experience negativity and frustration because of the physical chaos. “If your closet is organized and everything is easy to find, it starts the day on a positive note,” said Kathryn Norton, co-owner of Tailored Living of Knoxville. “Having a closet designed for your specific needs is worth the time and investment.” When it comes to closet design and features, depending on the size of your closet, there are probably more options available than most people realize. Besides rods to hang your clothes, some of the most common features people want in their closets are: Dedicated Shoe Storage Shelving for shoes makes it easy to see each pair you own instead of constantly bending down and searching the floor for the match

24

to the shoe you want. Slanted shoe racks are one of the most p o p u l a r ways to store shoes since it is easy to see each pair. Straight traditional shelving provides easier adjustability when you need to transition from winter boots to flip-flops.

Drawers Once considered a luxury, drawers in a closet are now part of a basic design. Drawers not only increase storage inside the closet, but they allow you to get dressed without having to walk back and forth, back and forth, from your closet to a dresser in the bedroom. Keeping all your clothes in one place is definitely a time saver. And, of course, while shelves and hanging rods put your shoes or clothes on display, drawers conceal items - an essential for things like

underwear and pajamas. Accessory Display and Storage If you don’t have the proper storage for items like jewelry, belts, and other accessories, they often get lost or they’re hard to find when you want them. For jewelry, a dedicated lined drawer with compartments keeps jewelry organized and away from damaging dust. Jewelry drawers can also have locks installed. The most popular accessory is a slide-out valet rod mounted to the side of a panel. It serves as a temporary place to hang clothes as you move them around or place your next-day clothes at night on the valet rod to make getting ready in the morning even faster. Tailored Living of Knoxville can help you discover closet organization that brings calm to the chaos.

WHAT’S FOR DINNER? C O U RT E S Y O F B P T

L

EFTOVERS ARE an easy solution to the common question, “What’s for dinner?” A recent survey found that 72% of Americans identify as pro-leftovers - but how can we cook and store these foods for maximum mealtime “yum” and less food waste? Whether you’re proleftovers all the way or need some convincing, follow the tips below for a more sustainable approach to enjoying meals. Keep an organized fridge An organized fridge is key to making the most of your leftovers and limiting food waste. Give your fridge interior a refresh so you can best find food items and develop a system that works for your family. A recent Bosch survey found that 61% of people believe they would waste less food if their fridge had more useful storage capacity. Utilize flexible storage and shelving solutions (like the FlexBar from Bosch) to make space for taller items so every inch of your fridge interior is maximized. Label your leftovers with the date they were made, and store them in airtight, glass containers. It’s easy to forget what’s in your fridge until it’s too late - glass storage containers are not only reusable and sustainable, but also allow you to see what’s inside. Cook meals that you already know will make great leftovers Many Americans choose their meals based on whether or not they will make good leftovers for future meals. In the survey, Americans noted that eggs and sushi are by far the worst things to keep as leftovers (42% and 33%), whereas soups (79%), meat (62%), and pasta (60%) are among some of the best leftovers. Rather than making that egg frittata for your at-home brunch, consider sweet potato hash browns or cheesy pasta bake that you can enjoy for days to come. Treat “extras” as a foundation for new meals For example, repurpose vegetable scraps to make a soup or stock. Toss extra carrots, onions, and the like in a gallon zip-top bag in the freezer. If you prepare twice the vegetables you’ll need for a meal, you’ll have a starting point for a soup or pasta salad later in the week, such as Leftovers Creamy Veggie Soup. Maximize freshness with the right appliances You can freeze leftovers if you want to extend their life for a longer period of time. An easy storage hack for leftover soup or sauce is to freeze them in muffin tins or ice cube trays for small portions to easily use for other meals. When buying a refrigerator, choose one that features freshness technology specifically designed to extend the shelf life of your food. The Bosch French door bottom mount refrigerator with VitaFreshPro drawer optimizes both temperature and humidity to keep meat, fish, and produce fresher, longer. Reheat your leftovers like a pro There are a number of ways to best reheat leftovers, and 41% of survey respondents said reheating ability is a key factor that would incentivize them to eat more leftovers. Your cooktop is a good method for making your leftovers feel like a brand-new meal. While microwaves are handy, they might give your leftovers an undesirable consistency, whereas cooking on the stovetop on low heat maintains its original taste and texture. You can also reheat leftovers on an induction cooktop or in an air fryer for fast reheating that ensures your leftovers don’t have any cold spots. Steam cooking is another great way to reheat leftovers, as it retains nutrients, moisture, and the original integrity of your food. Try reheating foods like fish and veggies in a steam oven - your leftovers will always come out fresh and flavorful!

TIPS F MAXIM OR LEFTO IZING VERS

LEFTOVERS CREAMY VEGETABLE SOUP By Teri Fisher (SpoonForkBacon.com), Bosch home appliances brand partner

Serves 4 Ingredients: • 2 pounds vegetables (like carrots, potatoes, parsnips - anything really!) peeled and roughly chopped • 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, divided, plus more for garnish • 3 shallots, chopped (or 1/2 yellow onion, chopped) • 3 garlic cloves, minced • 2 tablespoons minced thyme, plus more for garnish • 2 teaspoons cumin • 5 cups vegetable or chicken stock, plus a little extra as needed • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter • salt and pepper to taste • splash of cream, optional Directions: Preheat oven to 375º. Spread carrots (or root vegetable of choice) onto a baking sheet and toss in 2 tablespoons oil. Season with salt and pepper and spread into a single layer. Roast for 25-35 minutes or until fork tender, tossing around 15 minutes into the roasting process. Remove from oven. Place Dutch oven onto stove over medium heat. Add remaining oil to pot. Add shallots (or onions) and garlic to pot and sauté for 3 to 4 minutes, then add thyme and cumin and continue to sauté for 3 to 4 minutes. Next, add the roasted vegetables and stock to pot, simmer for 15 minutes. Allow mixture to slightly cool. Carefully pour mixture into a blender (this can be done in batches), add butter, salt, and pepper, and puree - adding more stock if mixture is too thick - and continue to puree until smooth. Pour mixture back into the pot and adjust seasonings. Simmer for about 5 minutes. Ladle into bowls and drizzle with extra virgin olive oil and fresh thyme leaves. Serve.

Always a Good Time for Dad’s Favorites BY J E F F G OTC H E R

A

S A NEW “bonus dad,” I’m relatively new to the “dad game.” Still, I’ve been training for it for years... rocking New Balance 1990s, telling bad jokes, judging others’ grilling acumen, and a passion for a well-manicured yard. My beverage suggestions for Father’s Day are going to be focused on what’s on the menu. BBQ Even if underwear is labeled “one size fits most,” there is no one-size-fits-all beverage for BBQ. If you’re firing up the smoker, especially if you favor hickory wood, you’ll want to pair it with something that can go toe-totoe with the smoke flavor. My go-to would be a Miller Lite with a lime wedge, but if I’m looking to impress, I will snag a Trousseau. This is one of the few red wines served cold. They have a smidge of citrus. Its herbaceousness can take the place of a beer as a solid summertime BBQ drink. Trousseau goes with whatever you throw on the grill, pork, or red meat and will pair 10/10.

• 2018 Domaine Rolet Pere & Fils Arbois Trousseau – Jura, France ($23.99) Burgers There are very few things more dad than flipping burgers over a hot grill. I’m not going to get involved in the debate between cooking over charcoal and gas. The only thing you’ll want to avoid is turning that burger into a coal briquette. Those dads need to turn in their “grill card.” A burger should be big and bold with all the fixings… mayo, bacon, cheese with spicy mustard. There are many flavors in there, but you have to match the wine to the dominant flavor. Most people think of Argentina when they hear Malbec, but the varietal calls Southern France its home. Go with that. • 2018 Antisto Malbec Cahors – Cahors, France ($16.99) Beer Can Chicken Beer can chicken is always fun and depending on the beer you’re into, super flavorful. For this pairing, I’d suggest you cook

the chicken with an IPA. The hoppiness will bring out the marinade and/or seasoning, and it’ll add another layer of flavor. You can either double down on the IPA or go with a Burgundian Chardonnay. I’d recommend something from Chablis. The minerality would pair well, and the structure of the wine would lead to one hell of a meal. • 2018 Jean Goulley Chablis – Chablis, France ($34.99) I owe a lot to my dad, and I hope to be as good as a dad as him to my amazing bonus kiddos. Hopefully, I’m well on my way with my beard and a passion for ruling the grill whenever possible. Whatever you choose to drink, toast to good dads everywhere cause you wouldn’t be here without them. Cheers! Jeff Gotcher is a graduate of the Wine & Spirits Education Trust, member of the Wine Scholar Guild, and a winemaker who resides in Knoxville. June 202 2

Jessica mentioned in her first message to me that she had been following along with my travels and wanted to know if I would be interested in visiting Nurture + Nature Retreat and possibly consider helping to share my experience. Two of the things I’m most passionate about are folks that chase their dreams and giving back to our communities, so less than a week later, I was making my way to Franklin, NC, for the first time. I began my journey to Franklin with a sunrise at the top of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, explored the

Kephart Prong Trail when I reached Oconaluftee, had breakfast in Cherokee, and then rolled into Dillsboro, NC. It was there that I finally met the beauty of the Tuckasegee River and wondered to myself why I had not taken time to visit the area in the p as t. I s lipped into Sylva, NC, where I found delicious grub at Lucy in the Rye, a never-ending selection of v i nt a ge b o o k s at Harry Alter Books, a chill vibe at Innovation Brewery, the location of the Jackson Arts Market, and many other spots that I did return to months later after my quick stop during my search for Franklin. After falling in love with Sylva, I knew once I reached Franklin that I would have to check out the downtown area, and I wanted to pick up a gift for the Merritt

family. And, just as I suspected, Franklin was another mountain town filled with charm, hospitality, history, and an ambiance that would make anyone feel welcome. A large mural of signatures from Appalachian Trail thru-hikers that had passed by on their way to Maine and Springer caught my attention, as did the mention of gems that seemed to be around every corner. Lazy Hiker Brewing, Scottish Tartans Museum, Ruby City Gems & Minerals, and Brooklyn Bagels stood out. I found the perfect gift at Blackberry Market Boutique and Gifts, then headed out for a 15 minute drive to the Merritt’s Nurture Nature Retreat.

Going to the Mountains is Going Home As I drove down the gravel road in the Nantahala National Forest to Nurture + Nature Retreat, I felt as if I was going home. My mind became clearer, joy flooded my heart at the sight of wildflowers along the way, and my spirit was overcome with peacefulness. When Jessica and her friend greeted me, it seemed as if we were old friends seeing each other for the first time in years. As I approached the glamping tents, campfire area, barn, farm animals, and my home for the night, I knew that I

had discovered a place that would stay with me for many years to come. Buddy the mini-donkey made me laugh, the Nantahala National Forest that borders the property called me to explore, the Merritt family inspired me, and the glamping tents were far more beautiful than my pop-up Kelty tent that I often use when camping. I toured the property and heard countless stories of the incredible work that Nurture + Nature Retreat and Special Liberty Project does in the lives of those that truly need a connection with a community and nature. A delightful dinner was served around a cracking fire, we made dream catchers out of grape vines, and as the sun sank into the horizon, I found myself in a new favorite place. A place of beauty, nature, healing, and, most of all, hope. The primary reason for Nurture + Nature Retreat being created was to provide a safe haven in nature to welcome Gold Star Families through the Merritt’s non-profit,

Special Liberty Project. However, this little piece of heaven in Southern Appalachia is also available as an AirBnB. You can also sign up for one of the themed all-inclusive nature retreats that Jessica hosts throughout the year. In late May, I co-hosted a Wildflowers & Honey retreat, with all funds going towards sponsoring retreats for Gold Star Widows. On June 8th - 10th, The Art Studios of the Smokies from Sevier County will be joining Jessica for a Nature & Art Retreat. Yoga, autumn, and equine are a few other focus points that guests have been immersed in while visiting Nurture + Nature Retreat. Are you interested in an AirBnB Stay, an all-inclusive retreat, or learning more about the Special Liberty Project? Visit NurtureNatureRetreat.com to connect with the Merritt family. Innovative Solutions for

YOUR KITCHEN CHALLENGES

Y

OU MAY have a particular challenge in your kitchen related to storage, organization, or access. Luckily, ShelfGenie has some organizational tips and solutions to help transform these frustrations into joy. Issue #1: Deep or narrow pantry shelves Deep or narrow pantries make it more difficult to see and access items you’re storing. Grouping items in like categories and keeping frequently used items up front can help. ShelfGenie Glide Out shelves can also help since they pull out the full depth of your pantry, making seeing and retrieving items easier. Issue #2: High overhead cabinets If you have a high cabinet that is hard to reach, consider putting in vertical dividers to use this space to store flat items such as baking sheets and trays. You can reach each item at the bottom, which makes access much easier. Issue #3: Blind corner cabinet Some homeowners struggle with cabinets that extend back to a corner, which makes full access nearly impossible. ShelfGenie has a solution that can increase usable storage space by up to 50% and brings items from the back of the cabinet to the cabinet door for more accessibility. Issue #4: Tricky space under the sink The area under the sink is hard to reach and keep organized. A ShelfGenie under-sink Glide Out with a riser shelf is custom designed to your cabinet to avoid pipes, hoses, and the garbage disposal so it

maximizes your usable space - and increases access. Issue #5: Hard-to-reach spaces For those with mobility issues, bending down to grab pots and pans in lower cabinets can be a real struggle. To make accessing these items easier, ShelfGenie designers suggest storing heavier items higher up on Glide Out shelves that pull out for easy retrieval. Issue #6: In-the-way trashcans Keep your trash/recycling out of sight - but always within reach - with a Glide Out trash/recycling unit installed in a lower cabinet. The unit pulls out for easy access and can be attached to the cabinet door for an elegant, functional solution. To bring these solutions to your home and begin turning your frustration into joy, schedule a complimentary in-home consultation with a ShelfGenie designer today.

THE YOUNG RASCALS AND BEYOND

B

ABY BOOMERS and classic rock aficionados readily recognize songs like “Groovin’,” “Good Lovin’,” and “A Beautiful Morning” whenever and wherever they are played. The band who recorded those hits was The Young Rascals, and the iconic voice and keyboards behind those hits was Felix Cavaliere. Felix is 77 years young and is still singing, touring, and recording. When he’s not doing that, he’s working out to keep himself fit. If that’s not amazing enough, Felix recently released an autobiography of his storied and gifted life titled Felix Cavaliere: Memoir of a Rascal. It’s an incredible, well-written book that shares The Young Rascals’ story from an insider’s perspective. I recently spoke with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee about his book. Regarding how long it took to write the tome, Felix shared: “Well, it took a little longer than I expected. Basically, what happened was in 2013, the original group, the Rascal group, we did a Broadway show called “Once Upon a Dream,” which was named after one of our albums. We had press conferences and the four of us would sit on the stage, and people would ask questions. I noticed that every single one of us had a different answer. I said, ‘You know, wait a minute. I really thought I was there.’ It was really kind of like astonishing, the different ways that, for example, how’d you get your name; how the group started; what was the emphasis behind this song and behind this song. It was very strange. So, I decided to write a book. I started not too long after that - maybe 2015.” As an aside, he added: “It’s much easier to write music! It was really tough. I respect all you guys (writers) because you look at somebody like Stephen King, I think he must be a robot to have that output. Let me tell you, that’s incredible.” Before the reader opens Felix’s book, they are greeted with an image of rock and roll history. Felix shared the story behind the cover photo.

BY R A N DY PAT T E R S O N , B O O M E R O C I T Y.C O M

“We were very fortunate to be able to use that. It was taken by Linda McCartney many years ago. Linda used to be a photographer, a very good photographer. She would come around to some of the shows and photograph a lot of us. If you’re not aware of that out there, you should take a look and see Linda Eastman’s photography. You’ll see some really wonderful books. I mean, she was really good. She was also one of the sweetest ladies I’ve ever met in my life. Beautiful. Sweet. She had I think it was a little girl with her at the time. A lot of fond memories. I remembered that shot and we called up the estate, so to speak, and they were kind enough to give us permission to use it, which I really appreciate.” When I asked if writing the book was cathartic, Felix diplomatically replied: “Well, yes and no. That was a good way of putting it. But, you know, I’ve been here for quite a few years on this planet - almost eight decades. I decided not to include some of the latter years after the breakup, which was 1972. They were not pleasant for me. I started to write about that and then I realized, ‘Wait a second. I’m an avid

reader. I really love libraries. I wouldn’t want to read that stuff.’ So, I left a lot of that out.” He fondly remembers “The ’60s had some really nice folks around…The peace, love and happiness world was pretty cool!” Particularly fascinating are Felix’s stories about his relationship with Jimi Hendrix. “Well, it’s interesting because I knew Jimi before Jimi was Jimi. Before Jimi became known, he was a sideman for Isley Brothers. He was always phenomenal, but he’s very shy (then).” Felix then fast-forwards a few years and talks about running into Jimi years later. “Here’s this man in the dressing room at Central Park, opening for The Rascals, The Jimi Hendrix Experience. I looked over and I saw this man very straight. He smiled and I said, ‘What happened? My man, what happened?’ And he said to me - I’m gonna paraphrase it - ‘I’ll show you what happened.’ And he did - man, he went out to that stage and let ‘er rip, man.” Reflecting on memories of Jimi that go beyond the stage, Felix added, “He was just a really nice man; a really good guy... was a good guy. It wasn’t easy, you know, obviously, for a black man to make it in any kind of business, especially the music business, and being as different, as unique as his style was, because nobody was doing that.” Felix shared so much more in the video interview including upcoming tours and albums that can be seen on Boomerocity.com. His book, Felix Cavaliere: Memoir of a Rascal, is available wherever books are sold.

Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

Jane Cartwright: Joyful Nonsense in the Display Case Artist statement excerpt: Joyful Nonsense is an assortment of my handbuilt, stoneware pottery. Whether I create functional or sculptural pieces, it’s always with a light-hearted spirit and a deep sense of fun. It delights me to give common objects a twist to make using them more entertaining… like wonky cups and wiggly spoons. I bounce between the bold black and white of sgraffito (carving) and exuberant, juicy colors. For me, it’s all about the joy. Jane Cartwright was born in Tokyo, Japan, but grew up in the U.S. Currently, she is a studio potter/cat wrangler and teaches handbuilding classes at the Oak Ridge Art Center. Jane Newman: Beauty Marks!? An Exhibition of Simplified Form on the North Wall Artist statement excerpt: Patches of pigment. Each unique, necessary, and important. Individual, yet communal. Texture, light, and movement impressions making their own exclamation! Shapes created with a plastic card loaded with beautiful tones of pigment stroked across panel surfaces, leaving their mark. Your eye completes the image. Beauty, marks. What makes a mark a beauty? The eye of the beholder! “As a maker of marks, I have discovered that accepting a mark for what it is, beautiful or awkward, and leaving it to work with the other marks in the painting creates a unity in the diversity of texture across the surface. Because each is unique, the painting becomes more interesting. The marks become the beauty in the painting (verb & noun).” Kara Lockmiller: POP Music in the Atrium Artist statement excerpt: I am a chromesthete, which means I see a vast array of real colors in my mind when I listen to music. My goal for each portrait is to let you glimpse music and musicians the way I do. There is a kinship between color and music - both can say what words cannot. After drawing out my musician in a grayscale underpainting, I add opaque and translucent acrylic colors according to what I see when I listen to their music. They come together like puzzle pieces on my canvas. I do not use editing software to produce my portraits. They are hand drawn according to their highlights and shadows. I’ve recently started to branch out into multimedia collages and varying subject matter - though musicians are still closest to my heart. The exhibitions will be on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. The Emporium is open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 1 pm. For more information, call 865-523-7543 or visit KnoxAlliance.com.

THE MILLER’S BUILDING: A Shopping Experience to Remember BY S H A R A C A S E Y, K N OX H E R I TA G E I N T E R N

T

H E B U I L D I N G that now occupies 445-465 South Gay Street bears a bronze plaque that simply reads “Miller’s Building,” hinting that there is more to the ornamental façade than meets the eye. Indeed, hiding behind a local ice cream shoppe and a closed-down bank is a building that boasts more than a century of commercial and architectural history. “Miller’s Building” refers to the fact that the address was home to Miller’s Department Store, a sprawling enterprise that was once the largest store for consumer goods in East Tennessee. Miller’s Store was originally located a little further down Gay Street at 311 when it opened in 1901. By 1905, business was booming, and the company secured a contract to construct a building at 445. The plan was to erect a seven-story storefront in the Neoclassical Beaux Arts style, and though plenty of columns and Grecian lady statuary made the final design, the top two floors did not. The new Miller’s Department Store opened for business in 1906 and was an immediate hit with Knoxville shoppers anxious for a taste of the luxury shopping experience at an affordable price. In fact, Miller’s did so well that by 1908, the sixth story from the original design was added to

42

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

the building, along with an elevator to take customers up to the top. The additional floor proved not to be enough, so three years later, Miller’s Department Store bought the property next door for an addition that perfectly matched their architectural style while more than doubling their square footage. This version of the Miller’s Building required Knoxville’s first use of a steam shovel for excavating a foundation, and once finished, it had the broadest footprint of any store, retail or wholesale, in the city. The Miller Store Company quickly became famous not only for its doorbuster deals, but also for its devotion to the holistic department store experience. It housed every clothing and home department imaginable, as well as a beauty parlor, cafeteria, credit lender, check cashing counter, sign maker, and gallery space. Through the roaring ’20s, Miller’s hosted art exhibitions, gave lectures, organized fashion shows, and held contests almost non-stop. 1922 saw the addition of Miller’s Budget Annex, a three-story building connected to the larger store by underground tunnel. Even as the pall of the Great Depression descended upon the 1930s, Miller’s Department Store seemed largely unaffected. The company made what was

reported in The Knoxville Journal as “the largest real estate deal since the start of the depression” when it procured long-term leases for three more bays along South Gay in 1935. This final expansion of the main store broke away from the rest of the buildings Beaux Arts style, foregoing red brick for the grays of Tennessee marble and imported aluminum. These new materials reflected contemporary Art Moderne sensibilities and were intended to be used for refacing the original old brick as well. However, by the time the marble addition was completed in 1937, war was looming on the horizon, and the plans for creating a single, block-long, cohesive Miller Building had to be dropped. Miller’s continued to thrive and had plans to move the whole operation to a new spot downtown in 1954. The relocation never came to fruition. Instead, the Miller Company bought out their Henley Street competitor “Rich’s” and operated out of two locations until 1972 brought West Town Mall. By 1973, Miller’s store in the mall so outperformed the other two Knoxville locations that the company decided it was time to let go of the Gay Street location. It was bought by a developer who made his own attempt to modernize the edifice by removing some of the masonry and replacing it with reflective glass, but there was little interest in purchasing the building thereafter. In 1998, the Knoxville Utilities Board and the City of Knoxville worked together to rescue the building from demolition. They went on to share the costs of an arduous renovation of the exterior, stripping the reflective glass and attempting to restore the lost masonry. A few Grecian ladies were gone for good, but the one that remained was replicated to fill the space of her sisters. Local architect Duane Grieve led the effort and gave us the iteration of the façade we see today, preserved for admirers of architecture and the generations of Knoxvillians who will never get the chance to shop at Miller’s Department Store. Knox Heritage preserves structures and places of historic or cultural significance for our community. Established in 1974 as a non-profit educational corporation, our organization works to protect and raise awareness of what is beautiful and irreplaceable in East Tennessee.

UT Gardens’ Plant of the Month

New Vinca Series Is Tiny and Terrific BY J A S O N R E E V E S , R E S E A R C H H O RT I C U LT U R I S T, U N I V E R S I T Y O F T E N N E S S E E G A R D E N S , J A C K S O N

INNIAS ARE a longtime favorite of home gardeners. They come in a wide variety of colors and flower forms ranging from single to fully double, cactus flowered, and even crested. They are easy to grow from seed, relish full sun, are loved by pollinators, and have a long vase life for cut stems. They also are tough and drought tolerant, requiring little to no additional watering once established. What more could a gardener ask for than a flower that has attributes like these? How about disease resistance? The typical garden zinnia, Zinnia elegans, falls short in one category: disease resistance. It is susceptible to a wide range of foliar diseases, including powdery mildew, cercospora leaf spot, alternaria leaf spot, and bacterial leaf spot. Some Z. elegans cultivars claim resistance to these diseases, yet none can compare to the clean foliage offered by the hybrid Profusion and Zahara series. These series are hybrids of Z. elegans x Z. angustifolia, which incorporate desirable attributes from each parent. Z. angustifolia, commonly known as the

narrow leaf zinnia, has natural resistance to foliar disease and passes that trait along, while Z. elegans provides an array of flower color and larger blooms up to 2.5 inches in diameter. There are some tradeoffs, however. The hybrids have a compact growth habit of only 1 to 1.5 inches height similar to that of Z. angustifolia. This change in stature shifts its use in the garden from that of a striking mid-border cut flower to a non-stop flowering front-border plant. Profusion and Zahara have been recognized through the years for their endurance and performance in the landscape as All-America Selection (AAS) winners. In the early 2000s, ‘Profusion Orange’, ‘Cherry’, and ‘White’ each received AAS recognition. In 2010, ‘Zahra Starlight Rose’, ‘Double Zahara Fire’, and ‘Double Zahara Cherry’ were recognized, followed by ‘Profusion Double Deep Salmon’ and ‘Profusion Double Hot Cherry’ in 2013. Most recently, ‘Profusion Red’ and ‘Profusion Red Yellow Bicolor’ received AAS winner award status. This broad color range allows makes for a very versatile plant in the landscape and containers.

The Soiree® Kawaii vinca series is a great performer in containers, as well as in beds. Here Soiree® Kawaii White Peppermint grows among ‘Warrior’ onions.

Zinnia in general do not look particularly attractive to shoppers in cell packs or small containers and for this reason may be difficult to find at local garden centers. However, they are very easy to start from seed and can even be direct-seeded outdoors once soil temperatures rise and all threat of frost has passed. The University of Tennessee Gardens, Jackson grew ‘Profusion Red Yellow Bicolor’ in 2021, and it was phenomenal all the way until frost. The older blooms faded to shades of orange and pink, while the new growth simultaneously produced new flushes of vibrant yellow-red blooms. All three UT Garden locations grow at least one example of these outstanding Profusion and Zahara zinnias during the summer months. The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Crossville, and Jackson. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The Gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. Visit utia.tennessee.edu/state-botanical-garden for more information.

June in the Garden BY L I S A G R U G I N

I

AM STARTING to get the feeling that Mother Nature is tired of our shenanigans. We have gone from hot to cold and back like some bizarre refrigerator/stove combo. I don’t know whether to put my winter clothes away or keep them out in case it snows in June! We seem to be moving into a (much) warmer pattern, but please remember that the soil was very slow to warm up this spring. Plants whose growth is triggered by soil temps have taken their own sweet time emerging. Those of you who plant vegetables based on soil temps also had to wait awhile. Don’t worry, your tomatoes will outperform the ones that were planted too early! June is a more peaceful time in the garden, but there are still things that need to be done: • Do frequent walk-arounds to observe the status of your yard. If you have plants that were zapped by the 14º night, the best treatment is time. By this point, however, you should be seeing signs of life and can prune off ends that didn’t recover. If you aren’t seeing new growth, check for flexible stems. If they are brittle, it may be time to assign that one to the compost heap and move on. For gardeners, it’s a chance to try something new! • Don’t forget to look up, down, and all around - requiring you to actually get out there amongst things. You can get an overview from your window, but you can’t see into the plants from there. They are more stressed from the weather than we are and therefore more vulnerable to disease and insects, so you need to monitor them. Please remember that not all bugs are bad bugs! There are many beneficial insects, so research before spraying. • The cool, wet weather was a good breeding ground for fungus, so watch for it during your walk-around and begin treating at the first sign. Neem and copper are the first lines of defense. • You can prune a few things now. Cut back spent bulbs, the stalks of spring bloomers (iris, peonies, etc.), and annuals that are getting leggy. If you want to reduce the size of your spring blooming trees and shrubs, prune soon after they stop blooming so they have not set bud for next year yet. • Maintain your container plants. Most will need to be deadheaded, cut back, cleaned up (don’t let the spent blooms settle down into the container), and fertilized weekly. • How are your vegetables? Many are off to a slow start because the soil was slow to warm. Be vigilant in watching for trouble in the form of insects and disease then treat before it gets out of hand. Splashing water is a quick way to spread disease, so always use soaker

hoses or water at the base of the plant. Mulch will help. Call us if you have problems. Now let’s talk about perennials, because June is perennial month! Many of you are switching to perennials so you don’t have to replant every year, but there are some things that you need to be aware of. The most important fact is that perennials don’t bloom as long as annuals; 4-6 weeks is average. This means that if you want consistent blooms, plant sequential bloomers. Choose a nice mix of plants that bloom in the spring, some that bloom in the summer, and some that bloom in the fall. A few evergreen perennials in the mix will keep your yard from looking naked. Let us know if you have questions! Additional information about perennials: • It takes them a little while to get going. The third year is when most really start performing. • If you have worked good compost or soil conditioner into your soil, most do not need fertilizing. • After 3-5 years, you can divide and share. Research timing or give us a call, because some prefer spring division and some fall. • Most can be moved if they (or you) are

unhappy with their location. Butterfly weed has a taproot and cannot be moved. • Perennial does not mean forever. Some, such as peonies, can live for decades. Others tend to start fading after a few years. • There are a few perennials that are toxic. If you have pets that like to nibble on your plants, please do some research! Let’s talk pollination before I close. If you do only one thing for the earth this year, let it be planting host plants for pollinators. There are many beautiful annuals, perennials, and shrubs that are also great for the birds and bees. Your HOA might not be happy if you turned your lawn into a native garden (although it would be much better for the environment), but you can easily tuck some butterfly weed, salvia, hyssop, or dill into a corner. A quick Google search will give you a whole list of beneficial plants, so be sure to add some to your yard. Have a great summer!

Random Acts of Flowers’

VOLUNTEER SPIRIT

T

Come Join the Fun!

HE GROWTH of Random Acts of Flowers since its beginning in 2008 has been quite remarkable. During the past 13 years, Random Acts of Flowers has delivered more than 152,000 bouquets of re-purposed flowers to individuals in healthcare facilities here in the Greater Knoxville area. With a staff of just three full-time employees, the only way Random Acts of Flowers can create and deliver this many personal moments of kindness is thanks to its dedicated, funloving, and hard-working volunteer base. During the past 12 months, Random Acts of Flowers volunteers were able to put in more than 7,100 hours into delivering hope by collecting flower donations from grocery stores, florists, and events around the area; sorting and preparing the flowers; repurposing them into beautiful individual bouquets; and delivering them to local healthcare facilities. Volunteers come to Random Acts of

Flowers for a variety of reasons: some volunteer to enjoy the comraderie of being with others that enjoy giving back to the community; some volunteer as part of a corporate day of service; some find floral arranging therapeutic; some volunteer in honor of a friend or family member that received one of our bouquets; and some volunteer because they themselves have been the recipient of a Random Acts of Flower bouquet! Whatever the reason for their participation, our volunteers are critical to our being able to carry out our mission of delivering hope and personal moments of kindness to those in our local healthcare community that most need one. During the past few months, more and more healthcare facilities have opened back up to allowing Random Acts of Flowers’ volunteers personally go room-to-room and make the floral deliveries directly to the recipients! The focus of the volunteers in 2022 has been - and continues to be

Volunteers and their creations.

- engage in activities that help others in a time of need and to continue to put forth their best efforts to ensure that Random Acts of Flowers maintains its minimal environmental footprint. As Random Acts of Flowers continues to increase its output and grow, there is always room for more volunteers. Even if you have never worked with flowers or made a bouquet, not to worry! Experienced volunteers teach and train newcomers until they are comfortable and confident. Come join the fun and know that your effort is making someone else’s day better! For more information about becoming a Random Acts of Flowers volunteer, call the workshop at 865-633-9082, email info@ RAFKnoxville.org, or visit RAFKnoxville.org.

Getting to Your Goals I

N MY L AST article, I talked about identifying and moving toward the deeper longings we have for our lives - a life of “more.” We discussed asking ourselves the right questions to identify the things that give our lives meaning and purpose. But, naming your desires and aspirations isn’t enough; to live a life of “more,” you need a plan to move toward those things or you’ll simply revisit your frustration and lack of fulfillment. In his classic book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey calls this planning process “beginning with the end in mind.” He says you must “make a conscious effort to visualize who you are and what you want in life, then you empower other people and circumstances to shape you and your life by default.” These days, the word discipline is out of favor. It smacks of other people’s rules being forced on us. But the idea of “empowering our circumstances” that Covey says will shape who we are, to attain what we want, begins by having life practices that accomplish those ends. No one attains a great life, a life of “more,” through a grand Epiphone or by drifting through their days like the feather in

wrd IN OTHER BY DR. JIM BAILEY

Forrest Gump. In his book The Principle of the Path, author Andy Stanley says it this way: “We don’t drift in good directions. We discipline and prioritize ourselves there.” In other words, the end results of our lives are achieved by consistently doing the same things over and over. We must do more than simply set noble goals; we must establish life practices that will help us attain those things. Life practices aren’t like New Year’s resolutions we promise ourselves then quit six weeks later because they’re too hard. They’re driven by our life priorities, the

core values that we want to mark our lives and that dictate how we spend our time. Our life practices are informed by a personal, moral, and ethical code we apply long enough for them to become character traits and life habits. For example, a friend of mine who grew up with a workaholic father wanted to have healthier relationships with his children than he’d experienced with his dad, so he made a life practice of being home (and mentally present) for family dinners when his kids were growing up. Recently, I met a man who has a life practice of “Ds” with his wife of 41 years - dialoging daily, date nights weekly, and destination trips annually - because he wants a rich marriage. Another friend of mine spends from 6:30 to 7:30 every morning in a Chick-Fil-A parking lot reading his bible and praying while he eats a chicken biscuit because he wants a thriving relationship with God. These people aren’t crazy or obsessed; they’ve simply determined what’s most important to them and established life practices to help them get those things. Their lives may not be great models for you. Your priorities and wiring may be vastly different than theirs, but their pattern of life practices is something to consider copying if you want “more.” Life practices aren’t just about daily habits either. It takes about seven weeks to establish a habit, but life practices also show up as consistent patterns in the mundane choices, unseen events, and occasional crises of our lives. The everyday moral, ethical, and personal choices you make when no one is looking (or you’re in your car) or when suddenly faced with a life-impacting decision add up. It’s the consistent patterns of our lives that determine whether we attain “more.” In my work, I ask every client what she or he ultimately wants - I help them define the ultimate goals (destinations) they want for their work and their lives, then I help them determine the action steps (life practices) they will need to attain those goals. I focus on these because I know information doesn’t change us - consistent action does. The trick is to define and consistently take the right actions. To quote Andy Stanley, “Direction, not intention, determines our destination.” Dr. Jim Bailey is a Knoxville native with a passion for helping others maximize their lives and through his career, business, and leadership coaching services. He also mentors and serves in local youth and UT ministries. He can be reached at DrJimBailey.com.
