T WAS a lovely day yesterday - not quite “spring time,” but definitely closer than it has been! We made the decision to get out from behind our computers and go for a walk. Sometimes just a change of scenery does wonders for mind and body. We chose the UT Arboretum (on Photo by Mirtography the way into Oak Ridge) for our outing. Along with being a research and education facility, it also boasts seven miles of trails with a lovely creek running through the property. Some of the trails are wooded and hilly so you really get the feeling of being “away from it all.” Knoxville has been blessed with an ample number of parks and greenways in our beautiful city - an excess of 50 parks and more than 100 miles of greenways. If you have not ventured out to your local park, you are encouraged to do so. If you are a regular there, then why not explore some of the other parks and greenways available? Victor Ashe is a sprawling park to the

north, Lakeshore has some of the best river views, and Neyland Greenway (although not actually green but blessedly paved for strollers, bikes, and wheelchairs) follows the Tennessee River downtown under stately bridges with informative historical markers. Kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards can be rented at The Cove at Concord Park on Northshore - along with the occasional view of sailboat races on Fort Loudon Lake. There is also the new Mayor Ralph McGill Plaza in Farragut that will be hosting its first Bluegrass on the Lawn with the East Tennessee Bluegrass Association on March 26. So get out there and get some fresh air! While you are being refreshed outside, don’t forget to refresh your inside spaces, too. pandemic has affected peoples’ home décor needs, how she and her team go about filling those needs, and the most rewarding parts of being an interior decorator. EK: Before beginning a home decorating project, what should people look for when considering a professional interior designer? Sandy: Whether you are redecorating your existing home or beginning from the ground up with a new home, the greatest challenge starts with choosing the right interior designer. Good listening skills are crucial to working with clients. We have found that many people just can’t articulate exactly what they want; they just know what they DON’T want. It’s up to us to not only listen to what the client is saying, but also guide them through the millions of design options to discover their own unique style.

We know every project presents its own unique set of circumstances. We take the necessary time to help establish the scope of your project with the style you desire; our initial consultation is always complimentary. Your designer should ask you questions about your overall project goals, your family and lifestyle, personal preferences, and a budget should be discussed. Beyond listening skills, look for a professional interior designer that is a capable facilitator and communicator. EK: What design changes have you witnessed in light of the pandemic and the trend towards working from home? Sandy: If you thought you knew your home backwards and forwards before, odds are you’ve come to know it even better post the pandemic lockdowns! Many of us have been working virtually since early 2020.

Before people knew it, their jury-rigged office setups that were supposed to be temporary have become permanent. Along with the blurring of boundaries between home and office life, clients aren’t getting the decompression and relaxation needed when “off the clock.” Many struggle with the difficulty and frustration of trying to channel creativity and productivity when their surroundings seem to constantly stunt both. Our solution - make a room or space beautiful and functional. A place that allows you to thrive, rather than just survive, and boosts your mood to provide both style and comfort all in one package. We do keep up with the trends by attending Market several times a year and by analyzing what we are seeing from our suppliers around the world. If a client desires a specific trend, we will do that on a smaller scale. As colors, styles, and trends change, it allows the client to change without completely redesigning the room. It’s an exciting time as a designer, as there are so many different styles and colors available to fit anyone’s taste. As degreed professional designers, our team possesses the education and experience required to design beautiful and functional spaces for our clients. We typically focus on the quality of the products and services each client desires to realize the greatest impact for their budget. Global Asias:

Contemporary Asian and Asian American Art

HE KNOXVILLE MUSEUM of Art is pleased to present Global Asias: Contemporary Asian and Asian American Art from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation through April 24. Global Asias examines the cosmopolitan, playful, and subtly subversive characteristics of contemporary Asian and Asian American art. The exhibition highlights the work of 16 artists of Asian heritage who draw on a rich array of motifs, techniques, and cultural motivations to construct diverse “Asias” in a modern global context. “The artists included in this exhibition open our eyes to what it is like to cross boundaries both real and cultural,” shared Jordan Schnitzer, whose family has a longstanding history of championing Asian art and culture. “I hope each viewer is as moved as I am by this exhibition and is challenged and inspired by the art. The power of this exhibition will influence all of us for years to come.” What does “Global Asias” mean? Is it a place? An idea? This exhibition moves us away from considering Asia as a geographical location and instead invites us to think broadly about how “Asia” has long served as an imaginative construct. Always a Good Time for a Cookie

T’S THAT TIME of year again… Girl Scout Cookie time. If you’ve ever wondered which wines go best with which cookies, here’s a quick guide to get you through the next box of deliciousness. We’ll pair them based on the order of popularity of my office co-workers. There are conflicting accounts about which cookie is the most popular, which has led to some pretty heated arguments. Still, I really don’t think this list provides much of a controversy. THIN MINTS The reigning champion. I think I have Thin Mint crumbs between my couch cushions from last year. They are great frozen or at room temp. The mintiness of the cookie is its trademark, but pairing directly with mint is a challenge because the chocolate adds another layer to consider. I’ve been on a French wine

kick recently, so I’d recommend going with a Syrah or a Bordeaux. • 2017 Becheras Crozes Hermitage Rhone, France ($29.99) • Rothschild Blanc Selection Prestige Entre-Deux-Mers ($19.99) SAMOAS I’m sure the suggested serving size is one sleeve. I honestly thought the creators just decided to throw as much stuff on a cookie as possible. If it was a wine, I’d describe it as complex. I’d match it with a Malbec, or if I wanted to double down on my sweet tooth, I’d pair it with a Port. • Fabien Jouves Les Escures - Cahors, France ($24.99) • Quinta do Infantado Tawny Port - Porto, Portugal ($18.99) TAGALONGS When chocolate and peanut butter combine, good things happen. The critical ingredient to pair in this dynamic duo is peanut butter because it’s the dominant flavor. I think most people, when they hear peanut butter, automatically associate it with PB&J sandwiches. In my opinion, the best complementing jelly flavors on a PB&J come from black fruits. I’d recommend pairing this with cabernet sauvignon, which has a flavor profile that includes black cherries and blackberries. • Brea Cabernet Sauvignon - Paso Robles, CA ($29.99) • 2017 Unanime - Mendoza, Argentina ($25.99)

TREFOILS The iconic shortbread cookie-cut shaped like the emblem of the Girl Scouts of America logo needs no introduction. There are multiple ways to approach pairing. You can match the richness of the shortbread and complement it with a Chardonnay. You can also cut it with bubbles, which would add some complexity and texture, leaving your palate with a brioche-like taste and finish. • Macrostie - Sonoma, CA ($19.99) • 2019 Catena - Mendoza, Argentina ($16.99) LEMON-UPS These cookies aren’t really my style because I’ve been spoiled by Ham ‘n Goodies Lemon Cookies, but they made the list. Not to be confused with (retired) Lemonades, Lemon-Ups have motivational words to get you through the box. They have just enough sweetness for the citrus to stand out. You’ll need something with a medium-high acidity to balance things out. I would recommend a Pinot Grigio. • 2018 Terlan Pinot Grigio - Alto Adige, Italy ($19.99) • 2019 Albrecht Tradition Pinot Gris Alsace, France ($19.99) I hope that these suggestions will help you complement the next sleeve of cookies you eat with a bottle of wine. Please remember that my recommendations might not match your palate, so feel free to pair your favorite wine with your favorite cookie. Cheers!

Market corrections EARLY in your retirement years, coupled with ongoing withdrawals, can dramatically decrease the ability of your money to last your lifetime. It’s called Sequence of Returns investment risk, and few investment professionals talk about it or plan for it. Markets don’t give you the exact same rate of return every year; they give you up and down returns that work out to an average. If the downs come early in retirement, that can spell trouble. Many new guaranteed income opportunities exist today that didn’t exist 10 years ago. HEN I WAS in the market for a paddleboard, I noticed them wherever I went. When we were expecting our first child, we shared knowing glances with fellow parents to be. Premiere Consignment was started when we saw a need for an upscale furniture consignment store in Tellico Village. We (Mom and Son, Becky and Aaron) rolled up our sleeves and got to work! After weeks of trying to find a good location, we set our eyes on the old “grocery store” at Lakeside Plaza. After lots of cleaning, scrubbing, and securing the necessary paperwork to start a business, we opened our doors in March 2012. Our inventory on opening day was very limited, but the support from our clients was huge! We soon saw the need for different avenues to help our clients “downsize.” At that point, we opened our eBay store and have now shipped all across the world… even to places that don’t have zip codes.

Shortly after we opened, a client needed help with an estate sale, so once again, we said “Why not?” Since that time, Premiere Consignment has hosted estate sales in Tellico Village, Rarity Bay, Avalon, Loudon, Vonore, Madisonville, and other nearby areas. Our “girls” who work the sales with us have become like family, and we all enjoy working together and getting to visit with our “regulars” at each sale. As the store has expanded what we offer the community, Mom and Son have been joined by Dad and Wife, Toby and Misty. We are now truly a family business. Mabry-Hazen House Three Generations of History

OCATED ON A promontory with sweeping views of the Smoky Mountains to the south and the skyline of Knoxville to the west, Pine Hill Cottage, now called Mabry-Hazen House, sits at the crest of the ridge, slightly obscured from the roadway by the century-old magnolias. Finished in 1858 for Joseph and Laura Mabry, the house was situated just east of the city. During the next century, Pine Hill Cottage would then shelter three generations of their family and unbeknownst to them, also would serve as a museum for thousands of visitors to learn about their colorful history. The stories of the Mabry-Hazen household are worthy of their own period dramas. The house tells the origins of Knoxville’s iconic Market Square, the bitter divisions of the Civil War, the lives of enslaved and domestic workers, the infamous 1882 Gunfight on Gay Street, the scandalous 1934 breach of promise and seduction trial, and much more through the rich, colorful lives of the Mabry and Hazen families. Joseph A. Mabry cultivated a reputation as one of Knoxville’s most dynamic characters, investing his resources wherever he saw a potential profit and using whatever means necessary to protect his holdings, whether peaceful or violent. His portfolio ranged from land speculation and real estate development to railroading and mercantilism. Indeed, it was his real estate dealings that provided Knoxville with one of its most iconic spaces: Market Square. In 1853, Mabry, along with William Swan, donated land to the city for the express purpose of building a market house. While the structure itself was demolished in 1960, Market Square continues to serve as Knoxville’s central commercial and social district. In 1883, Mabry’s oldest daughter, Alice Evelyn Mabry, was married to Rush Strong Hazen. Rush Hazen’s personal initiative and business acumen led to a successful career as a wholesale grocer. He moved his family to his wife’s old home in the early 1890s, joining his aging mother-in-law. They expanded the home, building a rear wing with a new kitchen, bathroom, and office to meet the new century. In 1899, Rush and Alice’s youngest daughter, Evelyn Montgomery

Hazen, was born. Evelyn enrolled at the University of Tennessee at the young age of 15, graduated at 19, taught English at Knoxville High School, and worked briefly for the New York Times. Yet her life was sadly defined by an ill-fated 15-year love affair and scandalous breach of promise and seduction trial in 1934. Despite the odds, she won the trial and was awarded the unprecedented amount of $80,000. She likely never received a dime of the award and for her perceived impropriety and “unladylike” activities, Evelyn Hazen was blacklisted by Knoxville society. When Evelyn died in June 1987, she had outlived every member of her immediate family by three decades and spent all of nearly 88 years in her family’s antebellum home. In her will, she left two options for it - either the house razed to the ground and the property sold for the benefit of the Humane Society or the home and the family heirlooms in it converted into a museum for the benefit of the public. To satisfy the latter of these options, the Hazen Historical Museum Foundation was created to preserve the home, the extensive family collection, and tell the occasionally wild, always colorful, sometimes tragic stories of the house and its family since the museum opened in 1992. Because the home never left the family, the museum showcases one of the largest original family collections in America, with more 2,500 original artifacts on display and several thousand more in the archives. Walking into the historic house museum, you are offered a glimpse of the styles and tastes of the family. Throughout the year, the historic house museum presents a variety of special programming that highlights stories of emancipation or recreates 19th century Spiritualist seances. HAT COMES to your mind when you think of moss? Do these small, non-vascular flowerless plants in the taxonomic division Bryophyta sensu stricto transport you to an enchanted forest in a fairytale or a memory of hiking along a mountain stream hugged by moss-covered boulders? Whatever your memories or knowledge of moss might be, it is a fascinating living thing that is often either misunderstood or simply goes about its life unnoticed. I have loved moss for as long as I can remember. Photography and the love of nature have been central in my life for more than 40 years, and moss has always been part of the visual background and beauty of many of the areas I hold near and dear to my heart, yet I knew little about them. In the fall of 2011, that was all about to change, because moss was about to enter my world in a big way. I had been trying to establish a nice lawn to complement my native plant garden for years, but the soil was so thin and of such poor quality that I had all but given up on it. One fall I was walking the lawn area (or what was left of it) and trying to decide if I was going to plant grass seed again when I noticed a small patch of moss about three feet in diameter growing in what lawn remained. I made the decision to nurture the area by keeping it free of leaves and debris and encouraging the moss. I manually removed the grass and weeds in the area so the moss didn’t have any competition. Then I used an assortment of natural weed and grass killers, with various levels of success, to speed up the process. Slowly the moss began to spread, and by spring, it had filled in most of the area, though it was still not what one might call “lush.” After a few years, the moss filled all the areas that had been lawn, and it was beautiful! I began posting photos of the moss lawn on my social media and website and sharing them with all my plant friends. The reactions and interest were immediate and far-reaching. In all my years of growing and promoting native plants, nothing compared to the level of interest and enthusiasm the moss lawn received in those early days. With all that positive feedback, I began reading in earnest everything I could about moss. The more I read, the more fascinated I became. The questions from visitors and from followers on social media were

unending, and the excitement was palpable. Questions began to roll in: “Can I walk on it?” “Does it stay green year round?” “Are there mosses that grow in the sun?” “Do I need to weed a moss lawn?” My research assured them they could, it would, and yes, yes, yes. More questions came: “Do you have to fertilize it?” “Do I have to mow it?” “Does moss need good soil?” “Does the buttermilk in a blender thing work?” And with them more answers: No, absolutely not, nope, definitely not. Then came the more complex questions that required more in-depth answers, such as: “Does moss have roots?” The answer? Moss doesn’t have true roots but a root-like structure called rhizoids that attach to the soil surface. The more I researched, and the more complicated the questions and answers became, the more enthralled I was, and the more momentum this new interest gained with followers. New moss enthusiasts were born. A moss lawn may not be the solution for everyone, but it’s a great option for those with the right conditions. A moss lawn is a great environmentally friendly lawn alternative, and its year-round beauty will reward you for years to come. My suggestion for those that want to give it a try is to start out with a

small area to learn its requirements. The primary varieties in my moss lawn are Thuidium delicatulum, Oxyrrhynchium hians, Hypnum curvifolium, and Brachythecium sp. I’ve only touched the surface about moss and moss lawns. To further your knowledge, I recommend the following three books: The Magical World of Moss Gardening by Annie Martin, Gathering Moss by Robin Wall Kimmerer, and Common Mosses of the Appalachians by Karl B. McKnight, Joseph R. Rohrer, Kristen McKnight Ward, and Warren J. Perdrizet. It is critically important to buy mosses from nurseries that are both responsible and sustainable in sourcing what they sell. A reputable nursery that I strongly recommend is Mountain Moss Company (MountainMoss.com) in Brevard, North Carolina. You can view an installation of diverse mosses at the UT Gardens, Crossville. The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Crossville, and Jackson. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. warm, cold; that is what the weather does this time of the year here in our little corner of the world. It might be 40 one day and 70 the next. It is very tempting to want to go outside and start planting on those nice days, but don’t get carried away. Our average last frost is not until early to midApril. Don't be tempted to plant too early, it never works out well. There are, however, many things that you can do on pretty days: • Do your walk around. What has changed in your yard? Have you had trees come down so that a normally shady spot is now sunny? Do you have trees that have grown so that a formerly sunny area is shady? How have your plants fared during the winter? Do you need to add, subtract, multiply, or divide? What would you like to do this spring to improve your yard? Stop by if you need some help with your planning. • If you have an area where nothing seems to thrive, do a soil test. This will let you know if your problem spot has an imbalance that needs to be corrected. • This is the time to do a good cleanup. Get fallen leaves and plant debris out of the beds and see how badly the weeds have taken over. Pull those weeds and treat the beds with Preen or another pre-emergent to keep them from coming back. While you are out there, work some good compost into the soil to add nutrients. • Cut perennials back to where new growth is emerging, but please consider leaving perennials that still have seed heads for the birds. They need the food to prepare for spring families. • Consider freshening or topdressing your mulch beds. It protects the plants from the spring freeze/thaw cycles and keeps moisture stable. Do NOT use too much, however! Three inches is optimal. NEVER pile the mulch around the base of plants or create volcanoes around trees. Your mulch should look like a flattened donut around trees and shrubs. If you already have a good base of mulch in place, give it a good raking to “fluff” it. Mulch can become very compacted and hard during the winter. • You can plant cool season annuals, perennials, and vegetables, but please do not plant warm season annuals and veggies yet. Everybody wants to get the first tomato of the year, but a tomato planted while the soil is cold will not bear well. Flowers will sit and pout because you were mean to them. Wait.

• Please stop pruning your plants without research. Crepe myrtles get murdered, hydrangeas and spring bloomers don’t bloom, and trees are horribly deformed by homeowners (and some bad “landscapers”) who have no idea what they are doing. Our first workshop of the season is on this subject, so call and sign up for the 10 am class on March 5th if you need help. The Knox County Master Gardeners Program also has some wonderful pruning videos on YouTube. • Houseplants are ready for some TLC this time of year. Clean them up by washing the leaves off. Small plants can go in the sink for a good rinsing and larger ones can be cleaned with a damp cloth. I use a Swiffer on some of my biggest plants! Check for disease and insects, and up-pot if necessary. Don’t go too big! One pot size is enough. Use the best potting soil you can afford, because cheap soil is the equivalent of junk food for humans. I also resume fertilizing in March. • This is a good time to get your containers ready for the spring. You can dump the soil from small pots into your garden beds and work it in. Some pots may just need a quick rinse, and some may need a thorough scrubbing. If you had a fungal

problem with the plants that were in the pot, rinse it with a mild bleach solution. If there are white lines on your pot, it is an indicator that you have been a bit overzealous with your fertilizing and salts are building up, so you need to scrub those off and ease up on the fertilization. If your containers are large, you don’t need to dump the entire thing out every year. If there are trees, shrubs, or perennials planted in them, you can top dress with compost. If you do seasonal planting, replace the top 6"-12" with fresh soil. If you have had problems with fungus or insects, however, you may want to start all over. Both can hide out in your soil and re-infect new plants. I’ll finish up this month with a reminder to take care of our feathered friends. Keep your feeders clean and full, keep birdbaths clean and full, and protect the birdhouses. We are getting shipments in on a daily basis right now, so stop in and see what’s new!

Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Energy Bites Recipe courtesy of Culinary.net Yield: 20 bites Ingredients: • 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter • 1/3 cup honey • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1 cup raw oats • 1/2 cup shredded coconut • 1/2 cup flaxseed meal • 6 tablespoons mini chocolate chips Directions: In medium mixing bowl, stir peanut butter, honey, and vanilla extract until combined. Add oats, coconut, flaxseed meal, and chocolate chips. Mix until combined. Shape into 1-inch balls. Store in airtight container in refrigerator until ready to serve.

A.J. Croce’s Got a Name and Plays by Request BY R A N DY PAT T E R S O N , B O O M E R O C I T Y.C O M

AY THE NAME “Croce” in front of music-loving baby boomers or people who love the music of our generation and great music comes to mind. Songs like “You Don’t Mess Around with Jim,” “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown,” “Time in a Bottle,” and “I Got a Name” instantly come to mind. That’s because the writer and singer of those songs, Jim Croce, achieved musical greatness with those songs - songs that I still hear on the radio and in establishments all around the world every day. That greatness and timelessness came from a career that lasted only 18 months. Sadly, Jim met an untimely death in a plane crash. A death that left a loving wife, Ingrid, and a son, A.J., who turned two years old eight days after his death. Ingrid and A.J.’s story from that moment on is one of serious challenges and rising above them. In the case of A.J., to be a successful artist and musician in his own right. With 11 solo albums and countless collaborations under his belt, A.J. tours to connect with his fan base. His current tour is bringing him to Maryville College on March 31st, with tickets almost sold out. Before A.J. shared what fans can expect from that show, he revealed an amazing story that took place while he was focusing on his own music and not leveraging his dad’s work, but managing his dad’s publishing and recording archive. “I wanted a certain integrity, and with not even touching my father’s music for 20 years, not so much because I didn’t love it, but I just I wanted to make a name for myself,” he said. “I got to a certain point in my early 30s, I was really taking over (my dad’s) publishing at that point. I had had a lot of experience with my own for 10 years prior to that and was transferring these old audiotapes. There was one in particular that I heard where my father was playing all these obscure blues and old country blues songs. They were songs that I had covered since I was 12 years old, and it was like 10 of the 12 or 13 songs on that tape. I had played every single one of them since I was a kid but never knew that my father had ever played them. It was so eerie. The hair on my neck just stood up. I was just completely blown away by this.” As to what fans can expect from the

IN CONCERT MARYVILLE COLLEGE • MARCH 31 upcoming show, A.J. said, “Oh, it’s a really fun show! I’ve been having a lot of fun with it... it’s been on and off for a while, for a couple of years. But it is really great to be able to connect with the audience. It’s a very energetic show. Some people might think of my dad’s ballads. There’s some of those in there - certainly, the famous ones are part of the show. Some of the biggest songs are part of the show. Outside of that, it’s really free. I can move around musically through my music, through his music, and I’m telling stories about where it all came from and how it connects. The whole thing about this, for me, is I want people to feel the way that I felt when I listened to that recording of my father and found this deep connection. I want them to feel that for me, for my father, and how everything is connected. I want them to have a great time while they discover this, and I think people will laugh. It’s really fun.” One of A.J.’s personal and direct influences was the late great Leon Russell. “I wrote with Leon Russell. We wrote a bunch of songs together, and it was a very similar thing. I liked Leon. I always respected him. I dug those early albums. But that wasn’t my influence. I was listening to what he was listening to; listening to that old boogie stuff, early rock and roll, Little Richard, Johnny Johnson, Pete Johnson - all

those old New Orleans and early rock and roll and blues based piano players and performers. We had all these similar influences, probably mostly Ray Charles. Ray was such a big influence on everyone that came after him. “It was funny because he (Leon) said, ‘You know, I heard your dad was a musician.’ And I said, ‘I would figure you would have known some of the songs,’ and I named some of them and he didn’t know what they were. It was so funny because we came to know each other by accident, sort of, through me opening for him or playing on the same festival bills.” Watch this fascinating interview in its entirety to find out more about A.J. Center New Exhibitions Opening Emporium March 4

Robert Felker: Patron Saints of Rock in the Lower Gallery Artist statement excerpt: This exhibition comprises a series of mixed-media collages portraying icons of the music world. These epic figures have been canonized into a church of my own making - a “Communion of Saints” - based on their worship status in the public eye, as well as my own. Music has accompanied me in my countless hours as a visual artist. Patron Saints of Rock is my attempt to share my admiration for the music creators which has stirred my soul. It is also my hope to honor the legacy of these artists’ contributions. Artists that have moved mountains. Jessica Burleson: Don’t Touch in the Upper Gallery Jessica Burleson is a Panamanian-American artist and recent Knoxville transplant. Her debut solo exhibition speaks to her experience of femininity and nature through the materiality and objectivity of paint. These acrylic paintings are created from acrylic skins and impasto cake decorating techniques to form a collage of textures and control. Artist statement excerpt: My works are a reflection of the embodiment of femininity and nature that is met by the world with an all-consuming hunger. I compose impossibly thick, icing-like, touch-worthy feminine floral elements. I speak to the exploitation of femininity as a pound of flesh to be devoured. My work lives in a world where worth is not of the body but within one’s essence, where femininity is allowed to remain sacred and untouched by burden, blooming into its full potential - living beyond objectification and allowed to accept our full spectrum of self. CAW: Coral and Amos Works in the Atrium CAW is an idea that Coral and Amos fabricated more than 10 years ago and is finally coming to fruition. This exhibition will be their first step toward collaborating together. Coral’s work had utilized more illustrations in the past compared with the natural elements she currently uses in her hand screen

printed fabric. These images all started as a photograph on her phone that she took while in nature, which she then separated by hand into several layers. Registration is used to create a repeat pattern, and there are random printed elements on each piece of linen yardage. Amos’s work is a mix of images from life and abstract scenarios, intended as screen shots from inner space. He draws inspiration from the endless and teeming variety of life on planet Earth with a particular focus on humor, absurdity, and small pleasures. Bruce Bunting: New Works in Paper in the Display Case Bruce Bunting is a retired engineer with a PhD in Mechanical Engineering who spent his career working in the automotive industry. He became attracted to papermaking because it combined art, chemistry, materials, and equipment. When he retired, he built a papermaking studio and fabricated all the equipment needed. He continues on with paper exploration, including materials, equipment, and techniques and considers himself fortunate to have the time and independence to follow his heart. Artist statement: I am calling these works “sculptural collages” collages, because they are assembled from paper with glue, and sculptural, because the works have depth and the paper has thickness and texture. I made the paper for these pieces in my studio. I’m working more toward a sculptural approach, rather than flat work, as I want the paper itself to be the art and not just a backdrop for another media. Stephen Brayfield: Pawtraits and Mewsings on the North Wall Artist statement: This is a collection of realistic portraits - or whimsical “Pawtraits” - that exhibit my ability to capture the essence or soul of our furry family members. These Pawtraits seem to be the most requested thing from me now. For most of these works, rather than stretch my watercolor paper, I mount it onto cradled wooden panels normally used for oil painting. When the painting is complete, I seal it with cold wax medium, thereby eliminating the need for a frame and glass. It can then be displayed more like an oil without any interference between viewer and art. The exhibitions will be on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. The Emporium is open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 1 pm. Spanning the Atlantic: The Arts and Crafts Movement Exhibit The Arts & Crafts m ove m e n t w a s a n international trend in the decorative arts that first developed in the British Isles during the 19th century before its influence made its way across the Atlantic to America. The movement stood for traditional craftsmanship, often incorporating medieval, romantic, or folk styles of decoration. Leading examples of works by Charles F. A. Voysey, William Morris, and Charles Rennie Mackintosh, to name a few, will be included in this twopart exhibition with the American portion on display in the spring of 2023. Cheekwood Estate & Gardens is a 55-acre botanical garden and art museum located on

the historic Cheek estate just outside of Nashville. Since being converted into a museum of art and botanical garden in 1960, Cheekwood has presented world-class art exhibitions, spectacular gardens, and a historic estate unlike anything else. As one of Nashville’s top attractions, Cheekwood has activities, programs, and festivals to celebrate all four seasons. Cheekwood will be open seven days a week from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. throughout the festival. Advanced reservations are required for all happenings, including workshops, classes, and general admission. Did you know… • U-Haul ranks Tennessee as the #1 state in the U.S. for net migration for trucks coming in vs going out • Realtor.com reports January 2022 listing prices up almost 16% since the same period last year

During the 2022 Real Estate Forecast Summit, the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) ranked Knoxville as one of the Top 10 “hidden gems” of the housing market. NAR defines a “hidden gem” as a market whose median home price-to-median family income ratio is at the lower end of 378 housing markets relative to the distribution of market fundamentals. Market fundamentals include job growth, wage growth, population growth, population to housing permits, net domestic migration to population, share of population ages 25 to 44 years old, and fraction of household with broadband services. “With continued growth on the horizon, it’s important to underscore that housing is the backbone of sustainable economic growth and prosperity. Meeting the rising demand for affordable housing of all types - subsidized, market-rate, single-family, multifamily - is one of the foremost challenges facing the East Tennessee region right now,” said Hancen Sale, KAAR
