IKAP Independent Knoxville Area Publishers

From the Publisher WHEN MAY is mentioned, it brings to mind spring flowers, weddings, graduations, and, of course, Mother’s Day. Moms are celebrated for all that they do for their families and the influence they have in shaping their children’s lives. I was brought up in the ‘50s when it was not common for women to work outside the home. But my mom and dad dreamed of owning their own home, and to make their dream a reality, my mom elected to go to work. When my dad came home from his day shift at the Post Office, my mom was off to her second shift billing clerk job for a trucking company and coming home late into the evening. But she was always up bright and early to make us all breakfast and see me and my sister off to school. I admire my mother for the work ethic she inspired, and after my parent’s home was

Everything Knoxville is distributed in Downtown Knoxville and select residential communities including Sequoyah Hills, Bearden, West Knoxville, Farragut, Concord and Hardin Valley

built, my mom continued to work so we could enjoy little extras as we grew up. All moms sacrifice in some way for their children. I’ve come to know many of our advertisers that are moms and see how they balance owning and operating a business with family responsibilities. Kristi Hickey, co-owner of Consign To Design with her husband, David, is a mom setting a great example for her children and for other women entrepreneurs. Read the feature article on the success Kristi and David have achieved in building an expanding consignment business known for quality merchandise and friendly service. I invite you to celebrate the events of May with gift suggestions from our advertisers. You’re sure to find something special not only for mom but for a May bride or a young graduate. Everyone at Everything Knoxville wishes all moms PUBLISHER + EDITOR IN CHIEF a very happy Mother’s Day!

N THIS ISSUE of Everything Knoxville, we are proud to feature the founders and owners and husband and wife team of Knoxville-based Consign To Design, David and Kristi Hickey. David and Kristi have truly redefined how others view the consignment furniture marketplace, providing homeowners and renters alike with the perfect venue to sell their high-quality, gently used furniture, art, and home décor items to other quality conscious individuals who may be shopping for that perfect single accent piece, bedroom or living room suite, or an entire home full of furniture. With just over 10,000 square feet of floor space, Consign To Design’s showroom provides shoppers the perfect venue to discover just the right furniture, art, or home décor items at just the right price – often up to 80% off full retail. EK: Your store is incredible. Tell our readers how this concept developed. David: Our first exposure to this concept was through a friend with a similar store. We were so taken with the idea that we decided to open our own. From the very beginning, we knew we wanted to provide the community with a place to find high-quality, gently used furniture and home décor at reasonable prices.

EK: How did customers respond at first? Was Consign To Design an instant success? Kristi: Customers were very excited when we opened. We heard things like Knoxville needed a store like ours. We have been thrilled with the excitement of our customers – both buyers and consignors. In fact, we have made some wonderful friends. I would say “Consign To Design has been an instant success.” We started out in November 2010 with about 4,300 square feet and grew to just over 10,000 square feet in March of 2012. We just recently added more than 1,000 square feet for our new intake center. EK: Consign To Design doesn’t look like what most people would expect a furniture consignment store to look like. Explain. David: I think many people have a preconceived notion of what a consignment store will be like. Some expect dusty old pieces like an antique store while others expect worn out furniture lined up on concrete floors. We work very hard to ensure that what our customers find when they come in is of high quality and only gently used. In fact, many of our pieces are so gently used that they basically look brand new. First timers often have a hard time believing that our merchandise is consigned. EK: Is it true that visitors often confuse your store with a

furniture store selling only new furniture? Is it also true that your growing list of shoppers includes many interior designers? Kristi: When new customers come in the store, we hear “wow” as their face lights up. We hear “this can’t be consignment,” “everything looks brand new,” and “this is displayed as beautiful as a new furniture store. Who gets rid of this beautiful furniture?” We have interior designers and decorators who frequent our store often. They buy for their clients or have their clients come in the store. A lot of times they come in together, and usually they don’t leave empty handed. EK: What is the significance of the word “design” in Consign To Design? David: We hope to be a place where customers can not only find unique and interesting items to decorate their space, but also a place where they can find inspiration and new ideas. Also, in addition to having a designer on staff, many local designers and decorators come in on a regular basis, either shopping for their clients or for themselves. EK: Where do most of your furniture, art, and home décor items come from? Kristi: Most of our great items come from people who live in the West Knoxville area, and a large amount comes from the lake and golf front communities located in Loudon and Monroe counties. They are either moving, just moved in, or are redecorating their homes. Some bring us an item or two, and some bring us their entire household of items. It seems like the furniture never goes in another home like it does for the one you purchased, and a lot of our customers have just relocated to the area and are downsizing or are empty nesters. There are others that family members have passed away and/ or have moved to assisted living or nursing homes, and the family needs help with selling their furniture and household items. EK:You frequently display furniture in tasteful vignettes. How does this assist shoppers? David: We wanted to display items in vignettes that were comfortable and inviting. Our hope is that this would not only create a relaxing atmosphere for customers, but it

would help them visualize how the items might look in their own homes. EK: You also have an interior designer on the Consign To Design team. Kristi: Yes, we sure do. Sher Hutchins has been a godsend to us. Sher owns Cent$ible Interiors here in Knoxville. She started as a consignor, and after frequently shopping in our store, she started working here and assisting our wonderful customers. EK: Can you list some of the brand names our readers will find at Consign To Design? David: We have had items from manufacturers such as Henredon, Hickory Chair, Stickley, Drexel Heritage, Baker, Lexington, Ekornes, Councill, Hekman, and Ethan Allen, just to name a few. EK: Any shopping tips for buyers? Kristi: The best tip I can give you is that if you see something you love, buy it immediately. We do markdowns every 30 days, and we put the markdowns on our tags, but if you wait for the markdown and you love the item, you will unfortunately be disappointed. So I say “if you love it, buy it; if it’s a well, maybe then play the game.” Our store changes every day with new items coming in and going out, and we usually only have one of that particular item. EK: How can our readers learn more about

consigning furniture? David: They can visit us online at www. consigntodesignstore.com or come by the store and we’ll be happy to answer any questions. EK: Is there a way to view your furniture and home décor online? Kristi: For now, you can visit our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/consigntodesign. I try to post daily. Also, we will have an inventory link coming soon to our website where you will be able to view everything online. We are very excited about this, but it takes time to get it all set up. But it’s coming soon! EK: Anything else you would like to say to our readers? David: A great big thank you! We have made some wonderful friends that have become family. We appreciate your support of our business and for telling your wonderful friends, because they come in and tell us who sent them to the store. If you haven’t come in, please do – we think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Travel

The Road to Happy

Tips to Boost Happiness on Vacation DO VACATIONS make you happier or less happy? The answer, according to new research – it depends. In theory, vacations should equal happiness. After all, taking time off work and time away allows us the opportunity to share experiences and memories with our families and friends. It gives us the chance to look at the world differently – to introduce us to new scenery, different places, people, and customs. But according to new research, theory doesn't always translate to reality when measuring happiness and travel. Traveling the world can “cross train” your brain to help you see more possibilities in life. Based on this

new research, it was also found that travel can make people happier, healthier, and more productive when they return from a vacation. But not all travel creates happiness. Travel stress can undo the positive effects of travel. Given this fact, there is a very specific formula needed to make the most of a vacation, allowing us to increase our happiness and overall energy. According to the new Monograms Road to Happiness Study, four primary ingredients are needed to enjoy a happy travel experience. In fact, 97% of travelers report being very or exceptionally happy when their vacation had these components:

1 MINIMIZE STRESS When asked about their best trips, only 4% of people reported feeling stressed. Conversely, on their worst trips, stress played a big role for nearly 75%. Specifically, the biggest vacation stressors were: » Wasting time figuring things out » Being unfamiliar with the destination » Managing transportation

3 CONNECT LOCALLY On their best trips, 78% of travelers knew a knowledgeable friend in the destination or met with a local guide. When you meet up with a local guide or someone you know, you are better able to connect with the destination. Creating a connection with people, places, cultures, and histories allows us to open our minds and increase our chances of experiencing happiness.

2 PLAN AHEAD If you want a happy vacation, check spontaneity at the door. New research revealed that the best – and happiest – vacations for 90% of people were those planned more than one month in advance. Planning ahead reduces stress and increases the opportunity to anticipate the getaway, and anticipation offers a great happiness advantage.

4 GO FAR AND AWAY The Road to Happiness Study also revealed that 85% of travelers’ best trips during the past five years were in locations outside their home country. Staycations just don’t bring the same happiness and meaning that travel does. Ninety-four percent of travelers vacationing far from home found more meaning – and more happiness – during their time off than those who stayed home.

Traveling the world can be an amazing and – even better – a happy experience. It should be. You just have to travel the right way.

Is It a Cold… Or Could It Be Mold?

PERHAPS YOU or your children can relate to my

experience. Having grown up in East Tennessee, I never realized I had such severe allergies. I was always assuming it was a cold. I grew up just outside Knoxville and lived in a split foyer basement home with my parents and siblings until graduating. My bedroom was in the basement, a consistently damp environment with an adjoining laundry room. Needless to say there were several occasions when the washing machine overflowed or leaked, and I can’t forget the two water heater explosions. My dad, like most homeowners, did what he thought was right – borrow a dehumidifier from a friend and shopvac out all the contaminated water. We realized during a remodel that the wall cavities were mold ridden. I guess this is what triggered my initial interest in fungal contaminated buildings. Like a young boy observing an astronaut for Jeremy & Ashley Akers the first time, I became interested in learning just how fungus and mold formed and the potential health risks they represented. My research led to the discovery of the IAQA, now known as the ACAC (American Council on Accredited Certification), a respected industry leader in mold remediation that offers certification to qualified members. After submitting a resume and educational background, members are permitted to develop their skills and knowledge, which leads to an accreditation certificate after an extensive examination process. The ACAC is the only board awarded certification, as well as the only HUD approved remediation vendor, and is recognized by the American Lung Association, Council on Scientific Building, and many state legislators as being the leading mold remediation specialists in the nation. Four out of five “mold cleanup” companies have no certificate, diploma, degree, or accountability. Mold Drs. USA is known to be the best at what we do for our customers. We have the very best training, knowledge, and education in the air quality industry. Since 2005, we have helped many families in the Knoxville area have the peace of mind they deserve. If you think mold might be at the source of your family’s health problems, why not call Mold Drs. USA today?

HERE COMES THE BOOM THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS AND VISIT KNOXVILLE’S BOOMSDAY TEAM UP FOR A SPECTACULAR NEW LABOR DAY WEEKEND CELEBRATION

HE VOLS’ SEASON OPENING game with Utah State is moving to Sunday, August 31, at 7:00 pm. As a result, Visit Knoxville will hold the 27th Annual Boomsday Festival on Saturday, August 30. The festival will expand down Neyland Drive and feature special programming celebrating Knoxville and the Big Orange. Playing on Sunday provides the opportunity for the game to be broadcast on ESPN’s new SEC Network. “This will be a unique and exciting weekend for our city and our state,” said Tennessee head football coach Butch Jones. “With Boomsday on Saturday and our season opener on Sunday, the atmosphere and energy in Knoxville will be unrivaled. We’re also excited about being one of the schools featured on the first weekend of SEC Network football telecasts, and we are looking forward to this tremendous opportunity.” The 2014 season opener will mark the seventh time Tennessee has played on Sunday. The Vols are 3-2-1 all-time in the previous six games. The last Sunday contest for Tennessee was the season opener on September 5, 2004, a 42-17 win over UNLV that marks the only Sunday game to date in Neyland Stadium history. “Holding Boomsday on Saturday in partnership with the University gives the opportunity to provide Vol fans and visitors alike with a truly memorable holiday weekend,” said Kim Bumpus, president of Visit Knoxville. “Events like this stimulate our local economy and highlight all that Knoxville has to offer. We look forward to celebrating this great city all weekend long.” Boomsday 27 will feature more music than ever before. The Knoxville-based Black Lillies will headline the event on the main stage with other local artists performing a variety of music from jazz to country and bluegrass on a total of three stages. Women & Money Paralysis Not making a move may not be the best move. Presented by Ali Swofford Financial indecisions may have consequences. There is an old belief that women are

more cautious about money than men. However, both women and men fall prey to a kind of money paralysis as they age – in which financial indecision is regarded as a form of “safety.” Retirement seems to heighten this tendency. You may be fearful of investing in a way that entails any kind of risk.

“Paralysis by analysis,” or simple hesitation, may cost you in the long run. Inflation

can subtly reduce your purchasing power over time. This is often the least addressed of all the risks to quality of life in retirement. In order to maintain your standard of living, you will need some growth investing. Even though you may want to stay out of equities, they offer you a chance to out-earn inflation and avoid financial peril.

Retirement is the time to withdraw retirement assets. We cannot control how long we

will live, how much money we will need in the future, or how well the economy will perform in 10 years. Growth investing now offers you the potential to generate a larger retirement fund for later. If you seek retirement income, ask a financial professional about ways to arrange it. There are multiple ways to plan for it, some of which involve little risk to principal.

Don’t forget America’s built-in retirement insurance: Social Security. For every year you wait to claim SSI between your full retirement age (66/67) and age 70, your monthly payments grow by 8%. In contrast, if you start taking Social Security before your full retirement age, it will mean less per month than if you had waited.1

Are you wondering how much money you’ll need to live on in retirement? Are

you wondering how your retirement savings and income may grow? Call me at 865-690-0049 to talk about your options, or join me for the Investing With Style Fashion Show on May 15th at Gettysvue Country Club. Moving the Body Painlessly THE LYRICS from Camelot speak of

the “lusty month of May,” the time when we are eager to romp outside with the warmth and beauty of the season and play, run, jump, swim, dance, love, twist, and turn. Even so, aches, pain, stiffness, and fatigue can temper that eagerness. For those suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, pain and stiffness can be an overwhelming obstacle. Conventional wisdom says that there’s not much you can do other than using pain and anti-inflammatory medication and sometimes physical therapy. But actually, thousands of people worldwide have relieved their pain permanently by changing their diet and lifestyle. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder that creates inflammation in the joints initially and, over time, can cause problems in the major organs and glands as well. It has been theorized that the cause of arthritis is of genetic or hormonal origin, but environmental and lifestyle factors cannot be discounted. In fact, various foods and drinks have been identified as either causing or relieving the inflammation, and thus the pain, of arthritis. Simple sugar is perhaps the most inflammatory food we consume. It can affect all systems of the body in a negative way, and the joints and ligaments of the body are no exception. Baked white flour products and sugary sodas, especially those with carbonation, facilitate inflammation. High heat such as frying and pasteurizing can produce toxins that lead to inflammation. Preservatives and additives can enhance inflammation, so choosing organic, whole, unprocessed foods are important. It has also been observed that certain proteins in dairy

18

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE May 2014

food may irritate the joints. In fact, all animal food is acid forming in the body and possibly leads to inflammation. Among fruits, citrus has been regarded as a detriment to joint health, as well as tomatoes and vegetables in the nightshade family. A comprehensive plan to avoid all of the foods listed above could go a long way toward eliminating the pain of arthritis. Foods that can help reduce inflammation and enhance the immune system include all types of leafy greens and root vegetables. Sea vegetables are an immune system building food that is unsurpassed in nutrient density. Miso soup made with the sea vegetable wakame, onions, and leafy greens can help build the immune system and reduce inflammation. However, by far, the most important undertaking is to avoid the foods that enhance inflammation. It’s May, it’s lusty, it’s time to move about and enjoy life to the fullest. Don’t resign yourself to a lifetime of pain. There is a way to end it if you’ll only take back your health and seek out the changes that will reduce or eliminate the pain.

Mint Garbanzo Beans with Quinoa › 1 can garbanzo beans, drained › 2 cups cooked quinoa › 1/2 cup chopped scallions › 2 Tbsp chopped fresh mint › 1/2 cup fresh sweet peas › 1/4 cup chopped parsley › 1 tsp coriander › 3 Tbsp brown rice vinegar › 1 tsp sea salt or to taste Wash 1 cup quinoa in bowl and strain in fine mesh strainer. Add to pan with 1 cup water. Bring to boil and cover on medium heat for 20 min. Remove from heat. Add peas to hot quinoa and let cool. This will be enough heat to slightly cook the peas. A Modern Approach to Straightening Teeth BEAUTY MAY BE skin deep, but our appear-

ance impacts many areas in our lives, from our personal self-esteem to how others view us. In my career as a dentist, I have had countless conversations with patients, friends, and family members on the best procedure or options to achieve straight teeth. Until recently, the most common procedure was the one we’re most acquainted with – metal braces. For cosmetic reasons, many patients avoid braces, and older Pablo Foncea, DMD patients, particularly those with active careers, shun them altogether, associating metal braces with the teen years. But as is so often the case, technological advances now make it possible to invisibly attain the visible straight teeth you desire. Thanks to researchers at Invisalign, a revolutionary new approach to straightening teeth

has emerged. Using a custom made series of virtually invisible aligners, you can finally achieve the straight teeth you’ve always dreamed of. That means no metal brackets to attach and no wire to tighten. Just pop in a new set of aligners, which are made from smooth, comfortable, and transparent plastic, every two weeks until your treatment is complete. Wearing these Invisalign aligners will gradually and gently shift your teeth into place based on the exact movements I plan out for you. You’ll achieve the great smile you’ve always wanted with little interference to your daily life. Also, the best part about the whole process is that most other people around you won’t even know that

Walking: The Old Way to Get Fit is New Again WITH SO MANY fitness trends, you might not think of walking as good exercise. If you’re not pushing a tractor trailer tire or shaking your hips to a Top 40 dance beat in a scheduled group class, you’re not cutting it, right? Well, not so fast. Walking is actually a great way to get in shape. In fact, if you walk often enough and fast enough, the simple act of putting one foot in front of the other can satisfy your body’s daily requirement for aerobic activity. Walking may just seem like an old method of exercise; it certainly is tried and true. But quite the opposite of outdated, it seems to be making a resurgence in the health, fitness, and medical worlds as a low-cost solution to the nation’s ongoing health care crisis. Walking is advocated as a crucial method of preventative care and is a low-risk means to optimum health. With a consistent, brisk walking routine, you can boost your immune system, help manage weight, improve your mood, and help ease depression, as well as improve

cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure, and prevent osteoporosis. The additional benefits may be endless. The walking movement is growing: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that between 2005 and 2010, the number of adults who walked for 10 minutes or more at least once a week rose from 56 to 62% - an increase of almost 20 million people. Need more convincing reasons to walk onto the bandwagon? Here’s why walking for exercise is so ideal: » Walking is what your body is designed to do. » Among all forms of aerobic exercise, walking carries the least risk of injury. » You can walk almost anywhere, any time. » Nearly everyone can walk, and it’s something you can do throughout your life. » It’s free. » There’s no special skill, training, or equipment needed – all you need is the right footwear.

sible, but controlling shedding is possible. When a dog scratches, it’s usually not fleas but the dog helping to facilitate the loosening and removal of dead hairs on its body. Dogs shed in an attempt to cool down. The undercoat is an insulation coat that maintains much needed body heat during the winter months. This coat sheds during warm weather. Dogs can also shed if they’re stressed.

As you develop your walking program, set your own pace. As a general rule, taking 10,000 steps a day is a great goal for improving your overall physical, emotional, and mental fitness. But the journey, as they say, begins with a single step. There’s no better time than now to begin.

Bathing your dog at least once a month. John at Ms. C’s uses a de-shedding accessory during the bathing process to eliminate excess hair. Brushing the hair daily will keep your house cleaner. Regular brushing helps collect loose hair. Very heavily shedding dogs may need brushing up to three times a day. Food plays a big role in shedding. Your groomer can explain reading the ingredient list to select the highest quality foods with

easily digestible protein sources to maintain the right chemical balance in their body to prevent excess shedding. Check-ups regularly, minimum of once per year, will ensure your pet’s shedding is natural and not a result of stress or disease. Ticks and flea bites will cause the dog to itch and scratch, which in turn will cause the dog to shed more than usual. Assure your dog is on a quality flea and tick prevention. Fatty acid supplements, such as fish oil and omega 3 daily, will replace lost oils in the dog’s skin and guard against shedding. Ask Ms. C’s about NuVet, which provides your dog the very best human-grade natural ingredient supplements that helps fight shedding, allergy issues, and other skin and joint problems.

Is It All in My Head? IF YOU’RE EXPERIENCING pain, fatigue, or other similar symptoms and have been told there’s nothing wrong with you, you’re not alone. At West Side Medical Clinic, we frequently hear stories from patients who are experiencing very real fatigue and pain but have been told by others in the medical profession that there’s nothing organically wrong with them. They are told all their tests are normal and routinely handed medicine, in particular anti-depressants and pain medicines. We complete more comprehensive testing that often highlights the real cause of the patient’s symptoms – tests we offer that others do not. An example of this is neurotransmitter testing, stress hormone testing, and food sensitivity testing. We work with outside specialty labs to be able to do these unique tests and have seen great results. Neurotransmitters are the brain chemicals that communicate information all throughout our bodies. It is estimated that more than three-fourths of all Americans have suboptimal neurotransmitter levels, which

can affect our mood, sleep, or our brains. Customer Service

The most overlooked asset in any business is good listening skills exemplified by the personnel they hire. Hear what your customer is saying, whether via a non-verbal clue or by asking pertinent questions. Customers who expect a higher level of service are easy to identify, too, if employees are experienced and well trained. Not only should the staff recognize and appreciate your needs, but they should surprise you with a level of expertise of the merchandise offered, provide total attention to your needs, and make suggestions that suit you best. Providing the service that our customers expect are the “marching orders” for the staff at Next To New. We look forward to serving you. Come see us soon!

VE RY BUSINESS

should be concerned with serving the customer. It is an especially important component for small businesses. Small businesses generally cannot compete with the “big box” stores on the breadth of merchandise, nor do many have extensive advertising budgets, but they can win over patrons with personalized service and gain new ones by word of mouth. But what constitutes customer service? And, more importantly, what constitutes good customer service? At the very least, employees should be friendly, sincere, and greet folks when they walk through the door. The store should be clean and well presented, the merchandise should be neat and organized (don’t underestimate silent service), and the “check out” process should be expedient. No one ever wants to wait to pay for their purchase. With most customers, that may be all they expect. Being aware of body language is an

important and learned skill. It most often determines how much personalized service a customer wants. There are some who get turned off by aggressive sales personnel, but if you read your customer correctly, you can provide the appropriate level of service they will appreciate.

Enrich Your Retirement: Simple Strategies to Achieve a 0% Tax Bracket BY YV O N N E M A R S H , C PA , M A R S H P R O F E S S I O N A L G R O U P

HOW MUCH MONEY will you give to the government each year in retirement? 15%? 25%? Perhaps more if tax rates rise, as they are expected to do. As recently as the 1970s, the highest marginal tax rate was 70% on earnings over $200,000! But take heart – there are strategies you can implement today that will keep you in a 0% tax bracket tomorrow. Now is the time to build tax-free assets to create tax-free income in the future (and no, I’m not talking about muni bonds). Think of your money in three buckets: taxable, tax-deferred, and tax-free. Your goal is to allocate the right amount of money into each of these three buckets during your working years so all your retirement income is tax-free. It’s easy for us to think that loading up on taxdeferred 401(k)s and IRAs are the best solution for retirement, but 100% of your withdrawals are taxed at potentially higher rates when you retire. The importance of creating a tax-free bucket with Roth IRAs, converted IRAs, and even tax-free cash value life insurance is often totally neglected. At Marsh Professional Group, we can teach

you how to keep more of your hard-earned money and transition from a totally-taxable retirement into a minimallytaxed retirement. Call us today for your complimentary appointment. You can learn even more by attending our free Lunch ‘N Learn at Lakeside Tavern on Wednesday, May 28, from 11:30 to 12:30, where I’ll be discussing 0% tax in greater detail. Multi-Generational Shopping AY IS the month we celebrate moms, but at The Lily Pad, we celebrate all women every day! We are a multi-generational shopping experience and love having three (or, if you are extremely blessed, sometimes four) generations come shopping together! Our buyers and sales associates fall into different age brackets also, which enables us to connect with every age.

Our scarf selection, for example, tends to be fuller, fluffier, and closer to the neck for the younger shopper… her mom, however, may choose a softer, slightly longer design. The younger crowd naturally gravitates to the beautiful sleeveless styles available for spring, while moms and grandmothers might want to add a “Sleevey Wonder.” (See our Insights & Highlights item on page 36.) Whatever age group you fall into, The Lily Pad has age appropriate dressing for all of the women we

celebrate – moms, daughters, grandmothers, sisters, and aunts! Happy Mother’s Day, or use this month just to celebrate you! Remember that The Lily Pad gift certificate is always the perfect gift! Wanda

Passing the Bouquet to Charity ITH TH E arrival of spring comes an exciting time for brides: wedding season. There are many aspects to wedding planning, and one of the largest (and most expensive) aspects is the floral decorations. After the bouquet is tossed and the happy couple departs, the flowers become an afterthought and are typically discarded and forgotten. What if the beauty of these flowers could be preserved and given to someone who needs some cheer? Random Acts of Flowers (RAF), a local non-profit charity, makes this happen. For absolutely no cost, brides can ask that their flowers are donated to RAF after the wedding. RAF works with event facilities throughout the Knoxville area to arrange picking up the flowers, which are then deconstructed and arranged into new bouquets by volunteers. These bouquets are then delivered to patients in area hospitals, senior care facilities, and hospice centers. The concept of passing wedding flowers to others has roots in historic cultural tradition. In the Victorian ages, brides tossed

their bouquets to a friend as she left the festivities to keep that friend safe and to offer her good luck. Much like a bride tossing her bouquet, donating wedding flowers to RAF can spread well-wishes to not only one, but many people – one bridal donation can impact the lives of anywhere from 50 to 100 patients and their families. Many beautiful flowers have already made an impact in the Knoxville area. Since 2009, RAF has delivered more than 33,000 bouquets and touched countless lives. RAF often attends local bridal shows, where attendees may talk to a volunteer and learn more about RAF’s mission and impact. Any person interested in donating flowers from a wedding may call the RAF Knoxville office at 865-633-9082. May 2014 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

HE ARTS & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville announces a call for entries for “Then & Now,” a juried exhibition that celebrates the 10-year anniversary of the Emporium Center by hosting 20-25 artists to showcase two of their works in a side-byside format: a piece from “then” (at least 10 years old) and a piece from “now” (created within the last two years). Fine art works in all styles and genres from both emerging and established artists will be selected by the jurors for exhibition in the main gallery of the beautifully-restored Emporium Center at 100 S. Gay Street, Knoxville’s downtown arts anchor location, from July 4-25. The Emporium is free and open to the public Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and Saturday from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. The deadline for entries to be received is midnight on Sunday, June 1. The call for entries is open to all artists. Works do not have to be for sale. At least one work in the set of “then” and “now” should not have shown

in any Alliance exhibition at the Emporium Center or in any Alliance satellite gallery (including Knoxville McGhee Tyson Airport). Entries must be original works in the following categories: 2-D (painting, drawing, mixed media, printmaking, photography) and 3-D (sculpture of all media). The nonrefundable entry fee is $20 for up to three sets of entries (FREE for Arts & Culture Alliance members). “Alive After Five” Begins New Era at Knoxville Museum of Art Alive After Five (AA5), the live music series at the Knoxville Museum of Art, begins its 21st year and a new era with the premier of the spring-summer series on May 9 at 6 pm. FOR 20 YEARS, AA5 has been presented

year-round in four seasonal series at the Knoxville Museum of Art, but it has been on a nine-month hiatus since its 20th anniversary celebration last August. Then came the installation of a permanent glass and metal sculpture of monumental proportions by Richard Jolley in the Great Hall, where AA5 takes place. There were also many major renovations both inside and outside the museum, including a complete redesign and landscaping of the North Garden, which created a wonderful new performance space. Plans are to utilize that space and the mild weather of May for the first two AA5s on

30

May 9 and 23. Everyone is encouraged to bring blankets or folding chairs for use in the Great Lawn, a large, level area in front of the stage. There are also concrete benches around two sides of the Great Lawn which can accommodate 150 or more people, and cushions, blankets, or stadium seats are encouraged. There will be a food vendor outside in the North Garden and another in the Great Hall, where tables and chairs will be available. If the forecast calls for rain, the program will be moved back inside the Great Hall as usual. The first three AA5s of the spring-summer series will each feature two bands and have extended hours beyond the normal 8:30 pm conclusion. The two shows in May will present the best of blues and R&B from Nashville and Knoxville. Stacy Mitchhart, aka “The Blues Doctor,” and his six-member band from Nashville will headline the May 9 premier, and the Davis Mitchell – Labron Lazenby Blues Experience from Knoxville will open the show, which will go until 10

pm. On May 23, a double-bill of Jenna & Her Cool Friends from Knoxville and the Andy T – Nick Nixon Band from Nashville will perform until 9:30 pm. On June 13, AA5 will move back inside the Great Hall, and big band swing will be the theme. The 17-member Streamliners Swing Orchestra will keep the dance floor crowded until 9:30 after a smaller combo, led by Streamliners vocalist, Kayley Farmer, opens the show. On June 20, AA5 will resume its normal hours, from 6-8:30 pm, and remain inside for the rest of the series, with six more shows through August 22. Plans are to do some additional shows outdoors in September and early October at the beginning of the fall series. Admission to the spring-summer series premier of AA5 is $15 for general admission and $10 for museum members and college students with valid ID. Ages 17 and under are admitted free. All shows begin at 6 pm. Doors open at 5 pm. For more information, call 865934-2039 or visit www.knoxart.org.

Mother’s Day at the Art Market Gallery

The Art Market Gallery is gearing up for Mother’s Day on May 11. Its talented fine artists and artisans offer original and affordable works that make unique gifts for that special mom.

EACH GLASS CASE features one of our six

jewelry artists. Their styles and materials differ from one another, from intricate beading and handworked polymer to semiprecious stones and fine silver or gleaming copper. All are one-of-a-kind works of art to wear. There are earrings, necklaces, pendants, bracelets, rings, and scarf pins. The gallery’s fiber artists offer hand-painted silk scarves (no two are alike), hand-woven tops, jackets, and shawls, felted handbags, and much more. Our clay artists have produced beautifully glazed vases, trays, bowls, and other items for display or to use. The wood-turners are showing wonderful bowls, honey dippers, rolling pins, decorative pieces with lids, and even contemporary accent furniture. Glass artists’ works glisten in the sunlight, from crystal-clear sun-catchers to paintings made of stained glass. To adorn the walls, our painters in oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolor, mixed-media, and colored pencil, as well as photographers and printmakers, offer enormous diversity in style, subject matter, and surfaces at many price points. Infusing new works into the already creative mix are pieces by some brand new members juried into the gallery: Eric Davidson of Dayton, who sculpts in marble, Ron Smith of Dandridge, who makes artistic pens, Mary Saylor, who creates fanciful animals from papier-mache, and Lin Ogelsby, who weaves elegant fashions, both of Knoxville. Along with all these great choices is the gallery’s monthly featured artist show. Recent works by painter Suzanne Jack and clay and fused glass by Elaine Barnes will be exhibited through May 25. An artist’s cooperative run by about 60 professional East Tennessee artists, the Art Market Gallery is a few doors from Mast General Store and next to Downtown Grill & Brewery. Hours are 11 am to 6 pm Tuesday through Saturday, 11 am to 9 pm Friday, and 1 to 5 pm Sunday. The gallery is wheelchair accessible, and parking in the abutting garage and on the street is free on weekends and after 6 pm weekdays.

Lifestyle After a long winter, many kids are dreaming of summer fun – and that could include a trip to a Tennessee 4-H camp. Tennessee 4-H operates camps in Columbia, Crossville, and Greeneville, and extension agents in every county are now registering thousands of kids for this summer’s adventures. But there’s always room for more campers. If you’re interested in your child attending a 4-H camp, contact the University of Tennessee Extension office in your county for information about registration. 4-H is the youth development program for UT Extension.

Zipping along over camp is among the many activities that today's 4-H camps offer students.

Tennessee 4-H Now Registering Kids for Summer Camp Video featuring Rhea County 4-Her shows kids, parents where summer fun begins THE RECRUITMENT campaign includes

a new promotional video highlighting the fun of camp as seen through the eyes of a camper. It’s hosted by Rhea County 4-H member, Katie Harris, a sixth grader from Dayton who spent a week at the Clyde Austin 4-H Center in Greeneville last year. Katie introduces segments about camp life, laughs and goofs off during the eight minute video, which also includes sound bites from 17 other kids from across the state who went to camp last summer. “I’ve been to 4-H camp, and it’s amazing,” said Katie. “I want other kids to go and have that kind of fun. I thought this video would be a fun experience and also a great way to encourage other kids across the state to go to camp.” Chuck Denney with UT Institute of Agriculture Marketing and Communications Services produced the video and “discovered” Katie when he was interviewing campers. He brought Katie and her parents to the UT agricultural campus in Knoxville to shoot additional segments and have her record audio. “When I first met Katie, I was impressed with her personality and enthusiasm,” said Chuck. “About halfway back on the drive from Greeneville to Knoxville, it occurred to me – she’s your narrator. Katie is a natural, and other kids will really relate to her.” 32

To see for yourself how much fun 4-H camp can be, search online for the YouTube video “Fun, Friends, 4-H: Summer Starts Here.” More than 4,000 Tennessee youth are expected to attend the three summer camps in 2014. Any child in the fourth through the eighth grade is eligible, and you don’t have to be a 4-H member to attend. Kids can take part in activities from arts and crafts to ziplining. Each camp also has its own pool and dormitories, as well as nature centers, hiking trails, and sports fields. “They get an opportunity to do archery, rifle, canoeing, swimming – some things they don’t get to do at home in the summertime,” said Scottie Fillers, camp director at the Clyde York Center in Crossville. “It’s all really hands-on, and we focus on getting them moving.” The other Tennessee camps are the W.P. Ridley Center in Columbia and the Clyde Austin Center in Greeneville. Mostly though the chief experience kids get from a week at camp is meeting new friends. “It’s like a city of kids,” said Joshua Taylor, a 4-Her from Sumner County. “My favorite part has probably been meeting new people – not just from this area, but from all across Tennessee,” said Cumberland County 4-Her Callie Strong. “It’s been a really, really exciting experience,

because I’ve never been to summer camp before, and I just love it here,” said Smith County 4-Her Chloe Baker. 4-H agents with UT Extension also spend a week at camp with the kids. “It’s really cool that parents trust us enough to send their kids with us for a week,” said Taunee Whittenbarger with UT Extension in Cumberland County. “We just try to keep them busy, keep them engaged, and usually by Friday they’re worn out, but they’ve had a great week.” UT Extension provides a gateway to the University of Tennessee as the outreach unit of the UT Institute of Agriculture. With an office in every Tennessee county, UT Extension delivers educational programs and research-based information to citizens throughout the state. In cooperation with Tennessee State University, UT Extension works with farmers, families, youth, and communities to improve lives by addressing problems and issues at the local, state, and national levels. 4-H is the youth development program for UT Extension. 4-H teaches leadership, citizenship, and service learning to approximately 184,600 Tennessee youth in the fourth through 12th grades. 4-H also has more than 6,100 adult volunteers in the state. Merry Anderson

Knox County’s Middle School Teacher of the Year WHEN MERRY ANDERSON reflects

on why she became a teacher, the answer is simple: She wanted to be a hero. “Teachers have always been my heroes!” she said. “The good ones come to work every day and attempt to ‘right’ the wrongs of the world – academically, socially, emotionally, and so on. I wanted to follow in the footsteps of the educators who inspired me to become the best person I could be – no matter what path I chose – as long as I made a difference among those around me.” It’s safe to say Merry’s career has turned heroic: She’s been named Knox County’s Middle School Teacher of the Year. “Ultimately, my life-changing decision to become a teacher was influenced by someone who never stepped into a classroom full of students herself; she was not an education major, and she never claimed to know anything

34

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE May 2014

about childhood or adolescent development,” said Merry. “My love of education and desire to teach others ultimately began at home with my very first teacher: My mom.” Merry, an eighth grade English teacher at Karns Middle School, has been teaching for 19 years. She earned her education degree from the University of Tennessee – Knoxville. “Daily challenges range from the benign to the bizarre,” she said. “My role as a teacher reaches beyond the textbook and extends outside the four walls of the classroom to address these various challenges. The uninformed may assume that teachers only deal with chewing gum, broken pencils, and hurt feelings, but the unfortunate truth is our difficulties are becoming more frequent and more severe each day. We, as teachers and counselors, are addressing students in severe physical,

emotional, social, financial, and academic distress. We are also nurses, grief counselors, social workers, attendance officers, guardians, and sometimes even ATMs.” A typical day – if such a thing exists – involves four English classes, committee meetings, bus duty, bathroom supervision, and much more. She says you never know what you’ll encounter when you enter a middle school. “Sharing my enthusiasm for learning is easily the best part of my job!” she said. “I enjoy being a positive advocate for lifelong learning, productive struggle, and ultimately my students’ learning and growth. I’m so fortunate to work with an extraordinary and talented band of educators and administrators at Karns Middle School who share a common vision and focus for our students – meet them where they are, and get them to where they need to be.” Merry describes being named Teacher of the Year as an overwhelming honor and privilege. “There are so many amazing and talented educators in our county, and they are also deserving of this award and recognition,” she said. “It has been an extremely humbling and reflective experience for me, and I look forward to many more years of teaching the students of Knox County.”

NOX COUNTY Public

Library invites readers of all ages to celebrate 10 years of the Children’s Festival of Reading on May 17 in World’s Fair Park. This year’s festival will host some of the most popular and acclaimed children’s authors and illustrators in the country. Headlining the day is Michael Buckley, author of the very popular Sisters Grimm series. Joining him are Chris Grabenstein, UT alumnus and author of “Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library;” husband and wife duo and Caldecott honorees, Andrea and Brian Pinkney; Horn Book honoree, Laura Veccaro Seeger; and Imagination Library favorite, Toni Buzzeo, whose book “One Cool Friend” will be acted out on the main stage by the Dollywood Penguin Players at the festival. World-class storyteller and children’s book author, Carmen Agra Deedy, will also be on hand. The Children’s Festival of Reading celebrates the literary arts with six performance stages, a Science Village, a Parade of Books, Jr. League of Knoxville’s Kids in the Kitchen, arts and crafts, book sales, 50 community booths, food, music, storytelling, and tons of fun.

Readers of all ages are encouraged to sign up for a summer of reading in one of the library’s summer reading clubs. Summer reading programs help students retain their academic skills during the summer. Research shows that struggling students can lose as much as 1.5 years of academic progress between grades one and six if they don’t read during the summer. Furthermore, summer reading offers children and youth a chance to explore books that are of personal interest. Studies show that when readers are encouraged to choose their own books, they become stronger and more engaged readers. “This festival is a great way to get a jump start on a summer of reading,” commented Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett. “This is a place where families can come to meet their favorite authors.” This year’s theme of the festival and the Summer Library Clubs is a nod to science: Fizz, Boom Read. Partnering with the L&N Stem Academy Students, the Science Village hosts “Mr. Bond, The Science Guy” as he demonstrates jaw-dropping, mind-bending, awe-inspiring experiments in front of your very eyes! Robots Alive! will feature L&N Stem Academy students as they explain

Decked Out from Coast to Coast: Top Outdoor Living Trends for 2014

FROM GENTEEL PORCHES in the East to sleek, seaside balconies in the West, the popularity of outdoor living spaces is poised for significant growth from coast to coast with industry analysts predicting it will be a $5.7 billion market by 2016. Reinforcing these projections, 63% of architects cite an outdoor living space as the most popular “special function room” in housing construction, according to the American Institute of Architects. What’s more, the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association reports that homebuilders list decks among the top three features most requested with new home buys. Decks and porches are now considered true extensions of a home’s living space. People are showing increased interest in maximizing the function, comfort, and personalization of their outdoor spaces and are realizing that it’s far more economical to expand their living space outside than to enlarge or renovate their home’s interior. As planning and preparation for the 2014 outdoor living season begins, experts offer a glimpse into the national trends that will be emerging outside homes across America in 2014.

Size matters

The biggest trend in decks right now is the increase in square footage. Gone are the days of the 20-by-10-foot rectangle with just enough room for a grill and some patio furniture. Today’s decks are expanding both horizontally and vertically. Demand for decks with multiple tiers is increasing, as are requests to finish the space below an elevated deck.

Thinking outside the box

When it comes to deck designs, today’s homeowners also are thinking way outside the box and customizing nearly every aspect of their outdoor living spaces. Remodelers and architects report increased interest in pergolas and walls to define different functional areas and create privacy, as well as integrated features like built-in benches, planter boxes, and storage. Similarly, consumer interest in accessories such as deck lighting, ornamental post caps, and decorative balusters also is on the rise. 42

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE May 2014

We are seeing a lot more mixing of materials. Contractors and consumers alike are creating highly customized deck designs combining two or more decking shades and also mixing materials such as composite railings in white with contrasting black aluminum balusters.

High-performance, low maintenance

In addition to design aesthetics, homeowners across the country are increasingly concerned with performance. Specifically, they want materials that allow them to spend more time enjoying their outdoor living space rather than maintaining it. This motivation has contributed to the continued innovation and popularity of composite decking and railing. Unlike wood or even traditional composites, high-performance wood alternatives resist fading, staining, scratching, and mold and won’t rot, warp, crack, or splinter. Upkeep is hassle-free and requires no sanding, staining, or painting. Food and drink spills wash off easily with just soap and water.

Decks and porches are now considered true extensions of a home’s living space. Sustainability

Composite decking also responds to another growing trend among U.S. homeowners – interest in sustainable, eco-friendly building materials. High-performance decking provides the look and feel of real wood but without the environmental impact, making it an ideal choice for today’s eco-conscious consumers.

TERMITE

ANT

There are three types of termites: There is the worker who feeds the colony and does the damage to your property, the soldier who defends the colony, and the queen who lays the eggs and starts new colonies by annual swarming. Termite swarmers are often confused with flying ants, because both have wings and both are sent out of existing nests to create new colonies. Termites move in and out of your home from underground nests and anywhere wood touches the ground is an open invitation for termites. (There is usually a connection to dampness.) Termites eat approximately 120 different household materials in addition to untreated wood. They can enter buildings directly from the soil, through mud tunnels, cracks in footings, foundations, concrete floors, or anywhere untreated wood is in direct contact with the soil. Ants, on the other hand, are very social. They are everywhere and eat just about anything. Carpenter ants do damage to wood, but most of the damage done by ants is food contamination and destroying seeds and plants. The best way to control termites or ants is to call Heritage Termite & Pest Service. Call them today for a free in-home consultation at 865-525-8900 or visit www.heritagetermite.com.

THERE IS SIMPLY no better way to add exciting beauty and drama to your windows than with a carefully designed and crafted custom window treatment. The extra touches a custom treatment affords you are virtually endless. Detailing, ruffling, banding, cording, trims, and the ease of coordinating fabrics make custom treatments truly individual and reflective of your style and taste. What makes a window treatment custom? First, a custom window treatment is designed specifically for you, your home, and your windows. Some other considerations are: » Do you want your windows to take center stage in a room? » Is energy efficiency a consideration? » Do you want to showcase your windows with a layered window treatment? » Are you wishing to make your small windows look larger or wishing to make your large window appear smaller? » Are your two-story windows creating a design challenge? These are just a few of the many challenges a beautifully designed window treatment will help you solve. Second, a custom window treatment is custom crafted. They feature extra fullness for beautiful draping. Corner weights allow the fabric to hang straight and not flare into the room. Special linings are used help contribute to the overall energy efficiency or room-darkening capability of the treatment. A unique way to treat a transom or foyer window is with an exclusive “iron work” product that few people are aware of. Your Garage More Than a Place to Park the Car Gone are the days when you have to settle for a drab, cement-gray garage floor. Today your garage floor can be as beautiful as any other room in your home.

FOR A STRIKING and durable garage floor

coating that is easy to maintain, Knoxville’s PremierGarage can transform that oil-stained, pitted, and peeling epoxy-coated concrete garage floor into a showroom quality look. In fact, garage enhancement is the country’s fastest growing segment of home renovation as garages have become more than just a place to park your car. PremierGarage, serving the East Tennessee area for 10 years, combines its proprietary hybrid polymer flooring system technology with their extensive industry knowledge and experience to provide a high-quality finish that is chemical, stain, and slip resistant. Technicians diamond grind each floor to the ideal surface condition to achieve a permanent chemical bond that substantially outlives traditional epoxies. Curing two times harder than epoxy, the flooring provides a continuous, non-porous coating surface that naturally resists various liquids that may leak from your automobile’s engine. It’s like armor for your concrete garage. Not only will your garage look more “finished,” but it also means cleanup requires only a mop and water. Available in hundreds of various chip and color combinations, you can customize the garage floor to fit your home and style. PremierGarage’s flooring solutions are also suitable for commercial and light industrial applications. Your PremierGarage consultant will also design sturdy cabinets and organizers, custom fitted to maximize the existing space in your garage, while presenting an attractive and inviting look that adds value to your home. The cabinets’ suspended design makes it a snap to clean underneath while protecting your cabinets and its contents from water. As featured last month at the 2014 Knoxville Symphony League’s Show House, PremierGarage’s flooring system and cabinetry are sure to be this year’s most talked about home improvement option. Three-Room Makeover Take Your Home from Simple to Sensational This Spring

Spring is the season of new beginnings, so is it any wonder that many Americans think about home improvement and brightening their décor when the weather warms? Simple updates can bring the cheerful perspective from the outside indoors and revive any room just in time for warmer weather.

Spring-spruce the living room

Spring-ready sleeping chambers Light hues are a great go-to for spring home decorating; utilize one of 2014’s hottest trends with a white-themed bedroom. Not only is white timeless and versatile, but it allows an array of interior design options. Add crisp white curtains to your windows to brighten the room, and for a chic addition, add a delicate white canopy to soften the atmosphere even more. For a hint of color, add in shades of muted teals – a top color for spring this year – on accessories throughout the room. If your spring style calls for more color, add vibrant bursts throughout your boudoir. As the bed is the focal point of the master bedroom, make it the center of your attention as well. Fresh fabrics and linens are essential for spring, so opt for a delicate coverlet in your favorite pattern. Also, incorporate decorative vases filled with fresh flowers throughout the space, allowing the fragrance of spring to accompany your fresh décor. 48

Make your bathroom bloom Relaxed modernity is ideal for a bathroom, and a serene palette is a great step to create this calming oasis. Use the beach as your muse; pastels such as light blue and eggshell white will create an oceanfront vibe no matter where you live. The finishing touches tie any room together, and the bathroom is no exception. The right accent rug and towels will transform the look of your bath with minimal effort and deliver maximum style. Updating your decorative accents will complement your new spring color scheme and leave the space feeling refreshed season after season.

With these simple home updates, you’ll be sure to awaken your abode with springtime appeal.

To kick off spring with color and character, add an assortment of patterned throw pillows to your living room. Mix and match fabrics and patterns – geometrics, florals, and stripes pair well together. It will give your living area visual texture and is the perfect way to perk up this room for the season. If you’re not in the mood for a complete room redo, use your existing color palette as inspiration; simply add in complementary shades to create a modern and harmonious look. Looking to turn heads with a simple spring update? Reposition your furniture. First, determine the main furniture piece in the room, and place it in a position that welcomes guests so that it serves as the focal point. Next, rearrange your other furnishings, photos, and artwork for a whole new look that will take your visitors by surprise, without spending a dime. Be sure to keep items from blocking any natural light – a well-lit room is great for any time of year, especially spring.

Living Large

in Adequate Size Homes

THERE IS A nationwide trend. We’re start-

ing to see more luxury homes with less square footage but with all the same high-end fixtures and finishes of their much larger peers. In years previous, downsizing was more about simplifying, doing with less. Now many homeowners say they still want all the nice stuff – the high-end refrigerator, the heated marble floors, and the swimming pool out back – but want to put it in a smaller footprint. I attribute this at least partly to everyone and their mother’s new penchant for the “open floor plan,” which instantly makes homes feel bigger and airier and tends to make rooms more multipurpose. Because of modern floor plans, a 1,700 to 2,000 square foot house might feel more like a 2,500 square foot home – all because of the way it’s laid out. Today’s home plans accommodate the modern homeowner’s tastes, which blur the kitchen, dining room, and living room into a single space.

square footage specifically so they can spend their money on the highend fixtures of their dreams. Why have four bedrooms when you can instead build the kitchen you’ve always dreamed of without sacrificing a thing? You have seen it written before about how the dining room is being phased out; this also suggests that homeowners use space more economically by adding a guest “niche” rather than a guest room and by making their outdoor space more like an outdoor living room. This new trend has also created some pricing confusion among buyers. Simply put, a 2,500 square foot luxury home will cost less than a 5,000 square foot luxury home in total but may cost more per square foot. That’s because many costs such as land costs remain the same no matter what size home you build. You also have to consider the amenities and the cosmetic features in the home.

Create the Perfect Outdoor Living Room It’s that time of year - time to dust off your patio furniture, fill your planters, and set up to spend the spring outdoors. While expanding an outdoor space is a top renovation project for homeowners and renters alike, it does not have to induce a state of pre-spring stress. With a few simple tips, you can create an outdoor space that adds value and comfort to your home.

Focus on your front entrance

creates a polished look and feel. Not only does a weatherresistant, indoor/outdoor rug anchor furniture just like in a living room, but it also adds a punch of pattern and color to complement your outdoor furniture. Adding big, bright flowers such as red geraniums is a simple and cost effective way to brighten up your outdoor space. Not a gardener? Not a problem. Achieve beautiful results with minimal effort by using Drop ‘N Bloom pre-mixed containers of bright spring flowers. For additional pop, whitewash or paint your tired planters with this season’s hottest colors - pollen yellow or aquatic green.

Enhance your home’s curb appeal by brightening up your front entrance. A coat of brightly colored paint on your front door can redefine the look of your home. This year go bold with your color choice - try coral, tomato red, teal, aqua, violet, pistachio, and cobalt. Add a wreath, doormat, kick plates, and new door hardware to complete the look. Knobs and handles with a burnished bronze finish also hide fingerprints and don’t show tarnish as easily. After all, a fabulous front entrance can make a powerful first impression.

Plan for a party

Design your dream deck

The base of any great outdoor space is a clean slate. Start with a good scrub and power wash. Echo the feel of your interior to create a cohesive style that makes it easy for you to move indoor décor outside when you are hosting. Start by creating a sense of space with an arbor or trellis. Use colors, furniture finishes, and seasonal accessories that complement each other, such as a beautiful custom patio set. If you’re unsure where to start, use an online patio planning tool to make it easier to customize the look. Mix and

match patterns, textures, and sheens for a designer-inspired finish. For urban dwellers in apartments or small spaces, you can create a great outdoor space by installing a vertical garden filled with succulents and a small cocktail table and chairs.

Accessorize and add color

Accessories aren’t just about making a fashion statement. In fact, adding finishing touches to your front and back porch

What’s a great outdoor space without others to share it with? Set up your space to host parties all season long. Don’t leave your guests in the dark hang up string lights or place solar lights around the patio to get the party going. Create ambiance and a cool conversation piece with a fire pit, or add colorful throw pillows for your guests to sit back and relax. Finally, set yourself up for a season of signature meals by planting an herb garden. Make the night more interactive by inviting your guests to help pick herbs that will complement the meal.

The Ultimate Weapon Against Soil, Grease, and Grime

A

RE YOU FRUSTRATED

because your floors look dingy no matter how much you have cleaned them? Don’t feel bad. It’s not your fault! Over time, dirt and contaminants are absorbed into the porous surfaces of your floor, which dull tiles and cause grout to darken. When you clean your floors with a mop, you are only able to penetrate the uppermost layer, leaving nasty stuff to fester underneath. Scrubbing has a tendency to push soil deeper into the floor, causing unsightly staining and permanent darkening. Traditional cleaning methods simply aren’t able to extract grime that is embedded in your surfaces. It takes a combination of high heat (to open the pores), high suction, and pressure, as well as a quality emulsifier, to safely and adequately remove all the junk under the surface. The proper way to clean tile and grout, concrete, slate, brick, and most other hard surfaces is what John Fitzwilliam at Surface Doc is all about. Here’s how he and his crew

do it. First, they use an effective emulsifier to begin breaking down years of build-up. Then, they use their patented tools for a perfect combination of pressure, heat, and extraction to remove all foreign contaminants from your hard surfaces, leaving them spotlessly clean and sanitized. Once your floors have been redeemed to their former beauty, you may wish to seal them. Sealing with Surface Doc’s lifetime guarantee sealer will ensure that no nasty grime will ever darken your floors again. Sealer also makes cleaning in the future a breeze and will guarantee your floors looking like new for years to come. Although Surface Doc, inc. specializes in deep cleaning all your hard surfaces, they also do an amazing job with carpet. Also, they are the only ones in the area that use purified water in the carpet restoration cleaning process. John and his crew can safely clean all surfaces inside and outside your home, from the kitchen and bathrooms to the driveway, pool deck, and even the sidewalks.

It’s no wonder Surface Doc has quickly become the leader in this area for hard surface restoration as well as carpet restoration. As always, they offer fast, effective, and affordable service. Five Great Reasons to Install Retractable Screens On Your Home This Spring 1. Let in fresh air and keep out insects.

As summer approaches, we look forward to spending more time on our patios and porches. Yet with warm weather comes bugs, making it often difficult to stay outside in comfort. Installing retractable screens on your home allows you to open up your living space without the nuisance of insects. Whether you need to screen your doors, windows, patios, or lanais, there’s a retractable screen solution that fits your needs.

2. Retract your screen for an unobstructed view. Retractable screens allow you

to enjoy uninterrupted views when the screens are retracted and let in fresh air without worrying about bugs. Large motorized screens can blend form, function, and comfort. They can be recessed into the beams or walls of a building, thereby staying hidden when fully retracted. They don’t diminish the views or esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed.

3. Preserve the look and design of your doorway. Homeowners are throwing

out the idea of conventional fixed screens and adopting retractable screens as the ideal solution. Retractable door screens provide the utility of a conventional insect screen without the unsightly results of conventional dock screens, making it a perfect addition for any home.

4. Let more natural daylight into your home when desired. Retractable screens

are the versatile and cost-effective choice for creating a more comfortable living environment while reducing energy waste. For example, installing Phantom’s fully retractable screens in the windows on the west side of a home allows homeowners to block the hot afternoon sun in the warmer months or fully retract the screens to gain the maximum warming effects of the sun in the cooler months.

5. Enjoy the convenience of a professional installation. Homeowners often

struggle to find screen solutions that match the design and size requirements of the openings they want to screen. For example, it can be difficult to install screens on large openings like a patio or balcony, especially if looking for recessed or motorized options. Professional installers eliminate these concerns by providing a screen solution that’s specific to your needs. stems spring forth from the earth, ultimately reaching 12 to 24 inches tall. The young stems are tinged with maroon and are adorned with alternating variegated leaves. The bright green leaves are parallel veined and are edged in pure white streaks. In late spring, it produces small white pendulous, bell-shaped flowers. They dangle in pairs on short pedicles at each leaf axil underneath the curving stems. They are said to be sweetly scented, but one must get down to their level to smell them. The flowers are followed by small spherical berries that mature to bluish black in the fall. The foliage turns a showy golden yellow in the fall. Variegated Solomon’s seal grows well in average to moist well-drained garden soil, but

it performs its finest when grown in fertile organic rich conditions. It is happiest in part shade but adapts well to full shade. Slowly spreading by shallow rhizomes, it forms colonies that are easily dug and divided in the fall or early spring just as they emerge. This plant has much to offer a woodlands garden, naturalized area, shady border, or rock garden. The arching habit and pendulous flower also make it a great choice for growing on top of a retaining wall. It combines well with ferns, hosta, lungwort, trillium, heuchera, and many other shade perennials. The stems make excellent cut stems and add graceful beauty to arrangements even when not in flower. Variegated Solomon’s seal can be found growing in the shade gardens of the University of Tennessee Gardens in Knoxville and Jackson. It is hardy in zones 3 to 8. Jason Reeves is a research horticulturist with the University of Tennessee Gardens, Jackson. The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit http://utgardens.tennessee.edu. Photo by J. Reeves, courtesy UTIA

May in the Garden HALLELUJAH – it’s May!

Winter was miserable, and April was a tease. Temperature fluctuations, storms, and paranoia kept many of you from planting until now, and that was smart. Early is not always better. It’s true that early planting gives trees and shrubs more time to put down roots, but tender annuals, perennials, and vegetables would prefer you to wait until the ground is warm. May is planting time. Do I guarantee there won’t be another frost or even, heaven forbid, a freeze? Of course not. Statistically speaking, the odds are on your side, since April 19th is the average last frost date. Just keep a couple of spare sheets on hand to cover plants with if Mother Nature decides to get in a final cold snap. There’s much to be done, so here’s your list for May: ›› Before you replace shrubs you think didn’t survive winter, please make sure they’re dead. Many borderline evergreens

such as loropetalum, gardenias, and Indian hawthorn turned completely brown but didn’t die. Evergreen shrubs aren’t used to replacing every single leaf in the spring, so they’re slow. If there’s flexibility in the branches, there’s life! UT is telling us it’ll be the end of May before we can really determine the extent of the damage. Patience may reward you with fresh growth. ›› Once the spring rains slow or stop, you’ll need to water those freshly planted trees and shrubs if we’re not getting one inch of rainfall a week. One way to check this is to put a tuna or cat food can near the plants, and see how much water accumulates during the week. If it doesn’t fill up, drag out the hose. ›› If your spring blooming trees and shrubs need shaping, now’s the time to do that. Pruning while they’re resting means you don’t remove next year’s flowers. Spray shrubs that have finished blooming with a water hose to remove spent flowers that

might hang around and become home to insects and fungus. ›› Many of you have questions about fertilizing trees and shrubs. Yes, you can still apply. No, you don’t have to. A good slow release or organic product is like a vitamin supplement for humans – not absolutely necessary but a way to cover your bases. ›› Fungal spores are busily breeding in our warm, damp weather. Keep an eye on susceptible plants, and start treating them as soon as you see a problem. ›› Check plants often for insects. If you need to treat, start with the least toxic products first. Systemic insecticides are great for plants like azaleas, euonymous, and Alberta spruce that are especially susceptible to bugs. ›› While you’re checking plants, keep your eyes open for rose rosette. Infected roses have red branches, deformed leaves and buds, and often have hundreds of flexible thorns. There are no treatment options, and the plant should be removed and destroyed. ›› Perennials can be fertilized now. There are some that prefer not to be fertilized, so check if you have a question. Annuals, ferns, and tropicals generally like to be fertilized frequently. A half strength water soluble fertilizer applied every two weeks will do the trick. ›› Stake tall perennials before they fall over. You can purchase supports and cages or use stakes. Attach the plants with a flexible tie if needed. Panty hose cut into strips makes a wonderful plant tie, by the way. ›› Deadhead perennials and annuals to extend the bloom time. ›› Zinnias, coleus, salvia, and petunias will be bushier and have more blooms if you pinch the tops out regularly. Any plant that’s getting leggy can be pruned back to make it fuller. ›› There’s still time to sow seeds. Fast growing annuals such as marigolds, zinnias, and sunflowers have time to grow. So do vegetables such as squash and melons. ›› Never stop weeding! Henbit, chickweed, and popweed are still rampant. Green onions will take over your flower beds. Pre-emergent herbicides will stop weed seeds from germinating if you ever do manage to eradicate the weeds from your yard. ›› Don’t forget the birds! Keep feeders full and birdbaths clean. Most birds are feeding hatchlings and appreciate the help. Please call or stop by if you have questions and to see what’s new. Don’t forget to check our website, www.meadowviewgreenhouse.com, for other information. Now go on out and play in the dirt!

GETTING KIDS OUTDOORS AT IJAMS NATURE CENTER

PUBLIC PROGRAMS AT IJAMS, we have always been passion-

ate about getting kids outside. For more than 90 years, the park has welcomed children into outdoor exploration. Today we are still incredibly fortunate to have the chance to open the doors of nature discovery for our community’s children. In fact, for some of the children that have participated in our programs, Ijams has been their first experience on a nature trail, in the forest, or wading through a creek. One child even asked if we were going into the “real woods.” Comments like these are a very real reminder that today’s kids are becoming separated from nature. At Ijams, we believe playing outside is a vital part of childhood. Most of the staff is here because of magical memories they have of catching fireflies in jars, looking for tadpoles in the creek, or just gazing up at the sky, imagining shapes in the clouds. Kids today are getting farther and farther away from these experiences. This summer Ijams is embarking on an exciting new program for East Tennessee children. With the help of generous partners West Knoxville Sertoma Club, Boys and Girls Club of the Tennessee Valley, Grassroots Outdoor Alliance, Horny Toad Activewear, Pelican International, and River Sports Outfitters,

• Mother’s Day Tea: Bring your mother and have tea with Jennifer on May 10 • Knoxville Urban Wilderness Hike with Stephen Lyn on May 10 • Walk n’ Wag doggie walk with Ijams veterinarian, Dr. Louise, to celebrate National Pet Month on May 17 • Cooking from the Ijams Garden with Peg on May 17 • Happy Hour Walk with Sabrina on May 20 • Creature Features: Public animal programs every Saturday For information about any of these programs, including start times, fees, and registration, call 865-577-4717, ext. 110 or visit www. ijams.org/events. As always, Ijams welcomes you in all seasons, 12 months of the year.

Ijams will be able to offer camp scholarships for kids in traditionally under-served communities. After all, if we can open the doors to nature with just a two-hour field trip, imagine what we can do with the kids for 40 hours, having fun and exploring more than 300 acres of forests, meadows, creeks, ponds, and rivers! What if we can teach them exciting and safe ways to enjoy nature while also inspiring them to want to care for it? There is nothing like this camp in East Tennessee, a revolutionary hybrid of outdoor recreation and environmental education.

Campers will spend half their day learning about the safe and proper use of recreation equipment such as bikes, climbing walls, kayaks, paddleboards, and camping gear. The other half of their day will be spent catching tadpoles in the pond, wading through creeks, and tracking animals through the forest. It is our hope that this combination of activities will encourage them to have fun and play outdoors while also helping them gain an understanding of their role in protecting the environment. We believe Ijams will be a positive force for improving the lives of our children. Tennessee is a state that struggles with the challenges of childhood obesity and diabetes. In addition, we are among the states with the highest prevalence of children diagnosed with anxiety and attention disorders. Studies have shown that outdoor time enhances imaginations and attention spans, decreases aggression, and boosts classroom performance. In addition, children who spend time in nature regularly are shown to become better stewards of the environment. Our country, and East Tennessee is no different, is facing increasingly complex environmental challenges. The key to finding solutions is a well-informed and passionate population of people committed to the conservation and care of our natural resources. Through participation in these new summer camps, we hope children will begin a journey that will lead them to better health, both for themselves and for the environment. Jennifer Roder is Education Director at Ijams. May 2014 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

TENNESSEE THEATRE

SINCE THE 1950 s, there has been only one King of the Blues – Riley B. King, affectionately known as B.B. King. Since B.B. started recording in the late 1940s, he has released more than 60 albums – many of them considered blues classics, like 1965’s definitive live blues album “Live at the Regal” and 1976’s collaboration with Bobby “Blue” Bland, “Together for the First Time.” B.B. King, as well as the entire blues genre, is not radio oriented. His classic songs such as “Payin’ the Cost To Be the Boss,” “Caldonia,” “How Blue Can You Get,” “Everyday I Have the Blues,” and “Why I Sing the Blues” are concert (and fan) staples. can cause a potential risk for West Nile virus! Make your time outdoors more enjoyable and avoid the irritating bites of these bloodthirsty pests by using Dayton’s Mosquito Control Management Program! A major factor for successful mosquito control is to start the treatment early in the season for mosquito resting areas, landscaping, vegetation, trees, and shrubs, as well as breeding sites such as standing water, pool areas, and waterscapes. Treatment is recommended monthly from May through October, and Dayton’s Mosquito Control Management Program uses a treatment process that kills existing mosquitoes and prevents many of the mosquito eggs from becoming biting adults. New customers will receive $25 OFF the initial mosquito control service with a six month contract from May through October.

Warmer weather also brings out carpenter bees, ants, wasps, yellow jackets, etc., and Dayton’s can eliminate all of these nuisance pests, guaranteed! If you think you can just plug up carpenter bee holes to get rid of them, think again, for they will just drill new holes in different areas. As for ants, killing them inside doesn’t do much good, for you have to treat an ant problem at its source, which is usually outdoors. New customers will receive $25 OFF one pest control service for warm weather pests. For pricing or to schedule services, call 865588-6686 or visit www.daytonspestcontrol.com.

History

BY HOLLIE COOK, DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION, KNOX HERITAGE

Happy Anniversary Knox Heritage! N 1974, the Bijou Theatre was threatened by demolition and neglect. The historic venue that had once hosted the Marx Brothers, Dizzy Gillespie, and many other entertainers since 1909 had fallen on hard times. The wrecking ball was poised to wipe out an important part of Knoxville’s history. But a group of concerned citizens was determined not to let that happen. They formed an organization called Knoxville Heritage, a name later changed to Knox Heritage. Incorporated on April Fools’ Day in 1974 and founded in the Dulin Art Gallery on Kingston Pike, Knox Heritage was thereafter dedicated to protecting and preserving structures and places in Knox County with historic or cultural significance. In the nick of time, the group raised the money to purchase the Bijou Theatre and save it for future generations to enjoy. Since its founding, Knox Heritage has aimed to educate everyone about the benefits of historic preservation. We have acquired blighted houses that once were the worst examples of neglect and restored them to attractive homes, improving historic neighborhoods. We have helped secure funding for development projects that contribute to the revitalization of downtown. We have called attention to some of Knox County’s most endangered cultural and historic 64

assets, encouraging owners to preserve these unique places for the next generation. And we have helped build a broad network of those that value historic preservation throughout the community. Tireless dedication from countless volunteers serving on the board and committees, financial support from thousands of members, hardworking and talented staff, and the growing awareness of the importance of historic preservation by the community all have enabled Knox Heritage to reach its 40th anniversary – and the many success stories during the course of this history will ensure that this anniversary is celebrated with pride. Since 1974, Knox Heritage has been largely successful in working toward saving historic places that were endangered and neglected but ultimately proven to be valuable and beloved resources in our community. In the last 10 years, we’ve seen the tide begin to turn, and historic preservation is becoming an essential part of our community’s identity. But our work is never finished, and we need your help to continue. In 2012, Knox Heritage announced the Aslan Foundation’s generous donation of Historic Westwood and its efforts to raise $3 million to accomplish three goals: Preserve Historic Westwood and provide a permanent home for Knox Heritage, establish a preservation education center for the East Tennessee region, and expand

our endangered properties fund and create financial stability. This ambitious capital campaign to take historic preservation to a new level will not be possible without generous support from our long-time friends, donors, and the community. Thanks to the generosity of the Aslan Foundation and other campaign donors. But we want everyone to have the opportunity to be part of this exciting project. We invite you to join us in the campaign and make a meaningful gift that will help us reach our $3 million goal! Historic Westwood is now open to everyone in the region as a place to learn about historic preservation. For more information, visit www.historicwestwood.org.

Easy Ways to Create a

Home Sweet Vacation Rental Home After a bitter winter, summer is finally within sight, and many Americans are getting into full vacation planning mode. If you’re planning a family getaway or a trip with a large group of friends, it’s a great opportunity to explore staying at a vacation rental. These are often an affordable alternative to booking multiple hotel rooms for larger groups, and access to the additional space and kitchen facilities can be very advantageous. Follow these tips to find the best deals and locations:

» START PLANNING EARLY

Many travelers begin planning their summer vacations right after the New Year, but it’s not too late now. For the largest selection of rental homes, start several months before you plan to travel and look for early booking discounts.

» LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

Book properties further away from popular tourist attractions. Proximity typically comes with a price, so look for places that are away from the tourist hot spots. Cities like Orlando can be quite affordable when staying just a stone’s throw away from the major theme parks and can more than make up for the distance in pricing.

» CONSIDER AN OFF-THE-BEATEN-PATH DESTINATION

You can find plenty of destinations that offer great activities and cost significantly less if you don’t limit your search to major cities and beach locales. Deep in the Ozarks, Branson, Mo. becomes a summer playground with a plethora of outdoor adventures, as well as more than 100 live entertainment options. Outside of Phoenix, Scottsdale, Ariz. is much more than just a golfer’s paradise, offering a vibrant nightlife scene and plenty of shopping in a historic downtown.

TIPS FOR THE STAY: Obtain a list of all amenities included in your rental from the property owner or manager prior to your stay.

Vacation rentals located in condo communities often have planned daily activities for guests of all ages.

You’ll want to know if you should plan to bring extra towels, a specialty cooking utensil, or beach chairs for example. Owners should have a detailed list what’s on hand and the quantity of items that they provide such as hand soap and toilet paper.

These may include family movie nights, scavenger hunts, cooking classes, water aerobics, and guest social functions. Obtain a schedule in advance of your stay to plan out your vacation time wisely and take advantage of free entertainment.

While the hope is that you’re out enjoying the scenery and local attractions while you’re using a vacation rental, you’ll also want to be entertained while in the property. Pack your favorite movies, games, and even toys if you’re traveling with children to make it as much like home as possible while also enjoying the comforts of someone else’s home.

If you’re planning a family getaway or a trip with a large group of friends, it’s a great opportunity to explore staying at a vacation rental. May 2014 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

SMART WAYS FOR SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS TO SPEND THEIR CASH THIS SPRING TAX SEASON is a headache for

most people, and small business owners are no exception. In fact, nearly six out of 10 small business owners in America say taxes are one of the top factors affecting their success. Yet the potential of a tax refund can be the light at the end of the tunnel. If you do expect a refund, tax season is a good time to reflect on your business. Receiving a lump sum of money can provide you with the incentive you need to take note of the ways you might invest in your business to make it better and can spur you to ask some new questions about your growth strategy. There are a number of sources you can turn to if you aren't sure of the best course of action for your business. A first step you should take is to speak with your banker. A dedicated smallbusiness banker who knows you and your market can help you make the best decisions for your business – not just during tax season, but all year-round. For those expecting a tax refund, here are six tips for small-business owners to consider in order to receive the most bang for their buck:

70

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE May 2014

» INVEST IN TECHNOLOGY

Purchase new technology that will make your business run more smoothly. For example, replace traditional cash registers with tablets that allow you to check out customers from anywhere in the store, or switch to electronic invoicing so you get paid faster. Technology that makes your life easier will allow you to focus on doing what you love instead of taking care of the books, filing paperwork, or trying to fix old equipment.

» UPGRADE YOUR ENVIRONMENT

Is your office space getting a little run down? Consider sprucing it up a bit. According to The American Society of Interior Designs, employee satisfaction and productivity rise in aesthetically appealing workplaces. You don’t have to spend much – even the color of the walls can make employees feel more inspired or more compelled to collaborate.

» GET THE WORD OUT

Help get the local community buzzing about your business by reinvesting your tax return into a strategic marketing campaign. There is a lot you can do to reach new customers, from traditional advertising in print and on your local TV channel to marketing yourself in innovative ways online.

» INVEST IN YOUR STAFF

Put the money towards one of your most important assets – your people. Pay for training courses to help them better their existing

skills or to learn new skills. Or reward them for their hard work with a small bonus or gift. By fostering an environment of employee value and appreciation, you’ll likely get back what you put in.

» START THINKING ABOUT GROWTH

Have you been looking for some seed money to purchase more property or hire additional staff ? Think about how this money could jump start a bigger investment you’ve been waiting to make. A little extra capital can go a long way when making a larger investment that you would have otherwise needed more financing for. This money could be just what you need to get your loan started.

» PUT IT AWAY FOR NEXT YEAR

What if you don’t receive a tax return next year? Store your return away and save it for your 2014 taxes, just in case. Getting a lump sum of money from a tax return is really a unique opportunity to re-invest in your business. The best small business owners have a few things in common, and a main one is this: They know that business opportunities don’t come along every day, so when they see one, they work hard to take advantage of it. This tax season, getting a refund is one of those opportunities. Don’t let it go to waste. Be smart with your money and use it strategically to grow your business. Consult your tax advisor for input as it relates to your small business.

The Foundation of Your Business

W

HAT SECURES a business’s – every business’s – ability to survive, grow, and prosper? Financial strength? Good employees? IT? Vision? Strategy? All are important. But the true foundation of all business, from the smallest company to the largest, is the knowledge that a contract is a contract, that the parties can enforce contracts against each other, and that if the parties will not voluntarily meet their commitments, a court will uphold the bargain. If you run a business, step back and consider which contracts are at the bedrock of your business. Here is just a short list:

What’s in a Name? LAUNCHING A NEW small business is

not for the faint of heart. Risks and challenges abound, and there are seemingly hundreds of questions to answer and decisions to be made. One of the decisions to be made is what to name your new enterprise, and will you incorporate a logo into its design? I was recently asked by a young entrepreneur to comment on both his company’s name and new logo. The name was fine; in fact, the name he selected was helpful to those hearing it for the first time, which includes just about everybody, understand the nature of his new company and just what goods or services he offers. I find that many new entrepreneurs select names they regard as “cool” but leave many of us guessing just what it is that they offer. I lean toward simpler, more easily understood names that help potential new

customers understand just what it is I do. New customers aren’t necessarily inclined to investigate a new company’s name that doesn’t tell them anything. I’m not saying don’t go for it, but launching a new business is difficult enough without embracing a stealth company name that leaves people guessing. Sure, you can point to the names of high profile tech companies that have recently emerged from successful IPOs, but they’re the exception. I’d say target success and then change your name after the IPO. Oh, but that logo. Artistically his new logo was amazing. It included some type of superhero character that has, quite frankly, nothing at all to

Business

do with the product or service his company offers. I found the logo confusing, leaving me wondering just how others would interpret a design he appears to have fallen head over heels for. My recommendation is a simple one: Keep it simple. Unless you have unlimited resources to overcome obscurity, I’d recommend using your new company’s name and logo to help facilitate people’s understanding of your new venture.

Here are some names I like:

• Consign To Design • Clinton Glass • Granite Transformations • Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning • Synergy Auto Wash Make your new company’s name and logo work for you and not against you.

If Practice Makes Perfect, What Are You Practicing? RECENTLY AN ACCIDENT occurred

involving our 16 year old son. He was hit from behind during an ugly rain storm. Thankfully no one was hurt. However, due to both vehicles being damaged, a claim was filed to start the process of repairs being made. Almost immediately my cell phone began to ring. Claim adjusters and rental car companies called to assess needs. Questions were asked and answered, with appointments made to remedy issues. The rental car company called three times to schedule an appointment should we need a car. Every detail was being handled on our behalf, all I had to do was answer questions and plan as needed. The same week, my internet went out. Each device – my iPhone, iPad, and laptop – would not stay connected even for a few minutes. Several times I attempted to fix it. Turning everything on and off and reconnecting wires didn’t help. Adjusting my settings was fruitless. No option remained but to call my service provider. After three times of navigating my way through their automated system to make a connection, my call was disconnected. Starting over a fourth time, several frustrating minutes into my effort, I finally connected

with a live person after having punched number after number to satisfy each computer generated question. Finally, a person. Poor man. By then, I’ll admit my frustration. Most of my work is computer and internet dependent. The service representative asked questions about devices I couldn’t even identify. He had me wrapped in wires within minutes. At his prompting, everything was disconnected with wires hanging aimlessly, worse off than before I’d called. One thing became evident – me trying to fix this issue was not going to end well. We set an appointment for a technician the next day. Does practice make perfect? It depends on what you practice. These are common issues most have faced at one point or another. Business is predictable. You sell what you sell, service what you service, and, after a while, you learn what to expect and patterns become predictable. Therefore, you put into

practice what works best for the majority. At home and at work, you practice what you want to perfect. Faith or fear. Happiness or unhappiness. Positive or negative. While such tasks can seem daunting, practice is the vehicle we use to approach change. No one exempts this process; even the most learned people have to try and try again. Practice character growth daily. Being assertive, communicating clearly, random kind acts, listening attentively, positive body language, eating healthier, exercising more, forgiving more gently, and learning to rest more peacefully by worrying less about things you cannot control. These are learned skills, wrapped up in teachable moments by a student ready to practice until perfection becomes feasible. Does practice make perfect? Perfect is a big word. Therefore, focus on what you are practicing most each day. Evaluate how you are doing, admit what you want to change, and pursue perfection.

Family Life

BY W E N DY JAC K S O N

Setting Boundaries with Your Teen THE TEEN YEARS are hard on both teenagers and parents. Teenagers may think they can handle everything, but they can’t. They’re still forming their identities and need guidance. Having boundaries for your teenager are necessary, as they provide safety and structure. They also can work to guide your teen down the right path toward adulthood. When you set boundaries, tell them why you set those boundaries. If they understand your reasoning, they’ll be more apt to stay within the boundaries you set. You should also be open to listening to what your teen has to say. Negotiate when you feel it’s ok, but stay firm on things you feel strongly about. As your teen grows and matures, you can adjust the boundaries you set accordingly. For instance, a rule that a 14-year-old must abide by may no longer be valid, or reasonable, for a 17-yearold. Boundaries should change as your child matures and becomes more responsible. If you’re uncertain what types of boundaries a teen should have, here are some questions to get you started: » Should your teen be responsible for getting themselves up each morning?

» Should your teen be responsible for getting themselves ready to be somewhere on time? » Should your teen wash, dry, and put away their own clothes? » Are there family jobs/chores your teen are required to do? » Should your teen be required to work a part-time job? » What do you pay for and what does your teen need to work to pay for? » When can your teen date? » How many nights can they spend away from home and at a friend’s house? » What is your teen’s curfew? » Can opposite sex friends be in your home if no adult is present? » What happens if your teen gets a ticket when driving? In regards to boundaries, expect them to be broken from time to time. When this occurs, you’ll have to decide on a consequence. Whatever that consequence is, don’t let your teen talk you out of it or you lose credibility and are teaching them that boundaries and rules really aren’t that important. If your teenager doesn’t make wise choices

in general, try to let them suffer from the natural consequences of their actions. For instance, if your child didn’t manage their time well and is going to be late for work, don’t call and make an excuse to their supervisor. A parent’s job is to help teach a child how to grow into a healthy, responsible adult. All children must have boundaries. As children grow into teenagers and they spend more time out in the world, boundaries are crucial for their safety and development. If they’re unable to learn how to move and live within boundaries you set while they’re living at home, the chances are high they’ll have problems in society when they finally do leave home. Set the boundaries and stick to them. It’ll benefit your teen in the long run. Wendy Jackson is a freelance writer based in Blount County, Tennessee. Just Because You Can Doesn’t Mean You Should THIS MONTH I would like to speak about a

topic that I’m rather sensitive about as I see our society getting farther and farther away from this etiquette consideration. It’s polite to be aware of who is within our earshot when speaking about certain topics or using particular language. Something that has most definitely changed in recent decades is the manner that women and men will speak in the presence of those of the opposite sex. Today it seems like there are little boundaries about conversation. Let me give you a few things to consider. Gentlemen, it’s not polite for you to speak about vulgar topics, use foul language, or speak about gross or inappropriate things when you’re in the presence or earshot of ladies. Recently I was stuck on a crowded bus with two gentlemen standing right in front of me wearing prestigious suits and holding professional briefcases. They appeared to be quite the gentlemen. Then they started speaking. They began a discussion, with me

standing right in front of them, that was anything but appropriate. I thought to myself, “I wonder why they think it’s ok to speak like that in front of me?” It was obvious – they didn’t respect me or themselves enough to watch their tongue in front of a lady. Let me remind you something about manners. Manners are not lists of dos and don’ts. They’re an outward expression that shows how you feel about yourself and those around you. That’s why it matters. Ladies, it’s not polite to speak negatively about men, use foul or inappropriate language, or speak of feminine health issues in the presence of gentlemen, especially those you don’t have a close personal relationship with. As ladies you want to seek helping those around you feel comfortable, and as you speak in a way that is kind, generous, and gracious, others will be more comfortable in your presence. Both ladies and gentlemen should be careful to keep their conversation positive, upbeat, and cheerful when speaking at the

dinner table. You want to be a source of strength, encouragement, and positive energy to others, and the way you use your tongue will most definitely be a source of strength or a source of weakness to yourself and others. Do your best to be aware of those around you when it comes to your language and speech. Yes, this is a free country, and yes, you may say whatever you want to. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. Restraint and respect are two traits that every gentleman and lady has. Do you?

Fat Reduction That Fits WITH SUMMER just around the corner, many of us start thinking about how we are going to look in our warm weather wardrobes. Frequently, unwanted body fat taints this image. Fortunately, the science behind the removal of unwanted body fat has evolved. There are now scientifically proven, non-invasive and minimally invasive procedures to help individuals obtain their ideal body shape. If you can pinch an unwanted inch, the revolutionary Liposonix device may be just the answer to what diet and exercise alone have not been able to accomplish. Liposonix is a new device that utilizes focused ultrasound energy to non-invasively permanently

destroy body fat. “1 hour, 1 treatment, 1 size smaller” is the moniker for this treatment. In controlled studies, Liposonix patients lost an average of one to two inches from their waistlines, with maximum results seen within eight to 12 weeks. The treatment takes approximately one hour, and there is no downtime. In fact, there are no post-treatment restrictions, and most patients can leave the office and immediately return to their normal activities. Liposonix is different from other non-invasive body contouring devices that can be limited in their ability to treat certain areas of fat and may require several hours and multiple treatment sessions to adequately address problem areas. The Liposonix system is highly versatile, allowing control over precisely how and where energy is delivered for a truly customized treatment in a single one-hour session. While

Liposonix was cleared in the U.S. by the FDA in 2011, it is backed by 10 years of extensive study. It has been featured on Dr. Oz, 20/20, The View, and in many of the top beauty magazines such as Allure, Vogue, and Elle. For those that need to lose more than an inch or two, tumescent microcannular liposuction may be the answer. This in-office, minimally invasive procedure, which utilizes only local anesthesia, was pioneered by a dermatologist in 1985 and is now considered the worldwide standard for liposuction. SmartLipo and SlimLipo are two well-known devices that have been cleared by the FDA for the destruction of fat (laser lipolysis). These devices serve as an enhancement to tumescent microcannular liposuction, promoting easier fat removal and better skin contraction. After SmartLipo or SlimLipo, most patients are able to return to work in two or three days. Virtually any area with excess fat can be treated. The neck, arms, abdomen, love handles, and thighs all respond beautifully to this procedure. Patients often ask me how much weight they are going to lose with

these procedures. I try to explain that these are body contouring procedures, not weight loss procedures. It is also very important that patients maintain a healthy lifestyle after these procedures. Even though fat is permanently destroyed, if a patient gains weight, the fat must go somewhere, and it probably won’t go where you want it to.
