Moms are celebrated for all that they do for their families and the influence they have in shaping their children’s lives. I was brought up in the ’50s when Photo by D. When my dad came home from his day shift at the post office, my mom was off to her second shift billing clerk job for a trucking company and coming home late into the evening. But she was always up bright and early to make us all breakfast and see me and

All moms sacrifice in some way for their children. I’ve come to know many of our advertisers that are moms and see how they balance owning and operating a business with family responsibilities. So let your mom know how much she is appreciated by pampering her on her special day. Our advertisers have some great gift suggestions that are sure to please, whether you are buying for mom or for a May bride or a young graduate. Everyone at Everything Knoxville wishes all moms a very happy Mother’s Day!

Introducing

SUNBELT BUSINESS BROKERS of Knoxville

F

OR MANY entrepreneurially

minded individuals, owning and operating a small business is the centerpiece of their American dream. The economic powerhouse of the U.S. economy, small businesses today create two out of every three new employment opportunities in the United States and represent the bedrock of our nation’s economy. Small business ownership is an exhilarating experience requiring entrepreneurs to react to a wide range of issues on almost a daily basis. Successful owners surround themselves with experienced and trustworthy associates, as well as a small group of mentors who help guide them. Nowhere is the experience of seasoned advisers more crucial than when buying or selling a small business. Many investors consider the purchase of an ongoing business with an existing customer base and cash flow preferable to launching a new business. Conversely, existing small business owners, perhaps contemplating retirement, are overwhelmed with all of the many responsibilities involved in selling their business. Sunbelt Business Brokers, helping business sellers and buyers for more than 30 years, sells more businesses than anyone else in the world. In this issue of Everything Knoxville, we are excited to introduce to you Blake Henry and Tim Varney, owners of Sunbelt Business Brokers of Knoxville. Whether you are an aspiring entrepreneur considering a small business opportunity or an existing business owner with an eye on a new venture or possibly retirement, this interview with Blake and Tim might very well provide you with the successful outcome you hope to achieve. EK: First of all, provide our readers with some insights into Sunbelt Business Brokers of Knoxville. Blake: Sunbelt Business Brokers is a privately held business brokerage, merger, and acquisition firm. Its mission is to 6 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE May 2017

Tim Varney & Blake Henry serve Knoxville area business owners to confidentially market their businesses for sale on a nationwide basis to ensure maximum exposure and to sell for the highest possible price. Sunbelt has more combined experience than any other firm in full-time business brokerage. We handle transactions of all sizes and types – from main street businesses to multi-million dollar, mid-sized corporations. No one in this marketplace is more committed and has more resources to attract buyers, both inside and outside the Knoxville area. EK: Owning and operating a small business is a full-time endeavor. What mistakes do business owners frequently make when trying to sell their own businesses? Tim: Two common mistakes come to mind: 1. Small business owners typically wear many hats, including operations, sales, marketing, and administration, to name a few. Because dayto-day operational activities take precedent over strategic planning for selling a business, the sale process can suffer. Take too much

time away from operations and the business suffers, which can impair its sale price. Sunbelt Knoxville eliminates this dilemma by offering strategic vision and insight to attract the ideal buyer for their business. 2. Selling a business is extremely time consuming and complex, because most businesses are unique. Therefore, business owners don’t typically have the necessary skill sets or resources required to value, price, and aggressively market their business. We offer a proprietary combination of data points, national comparable research, and business financial restatement to realize the full value of the business. EK: How does a business owner understand if their business has value on the open market? Tim: Many business owners fail to recognize the intrinsic value they have created within their business and often elect to cease operations rather than marketing their business for sale. If the business has provided a living for the owner for a sustained period of Photo by D. Roberts Photography

time, it can likely do the same for someone else and thus has value. We will happily review your business and give an opinion as to the ongoing value of your business. EK: Many would-be entrepreneurs mistakenly believe that launching a business is far less expensive than buying an existing business. How important is an existing cash flow and customer base to an investor? Blake: Statistically, nearly 80-90% of all business start-ups fail. Stepping into an existing successful business provides the necessary reassurance that the business can succeed, as well as provide enough cash flow to earn a living, service financing costs, and continue to grow the business. Further, people forget to account for the “start-up” costs associated with a start-up. There are many one-time expenses incurred when launching a new business, including equipment, furniture and fixture purchase, lease space finish out, and office infrastructure, for starters. In an existing business purchase, most of these items have already been paid for. Everything considered, buying an existing business is usually the best solution offering the reassurance of an established cash flow and far fewer start-up headaches and expenses. EK: How does Sunbelt achieve higher sales prices than the typical business owner selling on their own? Tim: According to FitSmallBusiness. com, Sunbelt has the “highest volume of businesses for sale, highest closing ratio, and highest average sale price.” We achieve this by understanding how to value the business, market the business, and leverage our 38 years of relationships working with business buyers across the country. Also, the power of the Sunbelt Network should not be underestimated. Our Businesses For Sale listings can be viewed and accessed by qualified buyers and our national broker network, thus offering unparalleled exposure. We simply attract and have access to more buyers. All of these factors contribute to the reason that Sunbelt is able to sell for more. EK: Business owners attempting to sell their own businesses often fail to maintain the confidentiality of their sales efforts. How can that impact them? Blake: Maintaining confidentiality is perhaps one of the most important aspects of successfully selling a business. Tim and I understand this and specialize in marketing and selling businesses while maintaining a high level of confidentiality for the business owner. In the absence of this confidentiality, competitors may attempt to capitalize on the

The Greater Knoxville area is a great place to buy, sell, or operate a business based on a variety of factors, including the region’s stable economy. instability that can occur during this period of transition, not to mention the uncertainty that can result among employees. In most instances, a buyer desires to maintain the current employee structure, and changes to that structure could ultimately impact the price a buyer was prepared to pay. EK: Business owners often lack the ability to find qualified buyers. How can Sunbelt help? Tim: As the recognized leader in business brokerage, Sunbelt is the go-to organization for new prospective business owners. While working with buyers, we review their financial capabilities, interests, and goals prior to any meeting with business sellers. This ensures that business sellers are not inundated with buyers that are not genuinely interested or who do not possess the financial resources required to purchase their business. EK: How do you maintain buyer and seller confidentiality? Blake: We develop 100% of our marketing material for each client with confidentiality in mind. Once created, the seller approves every detail, word, and avenue of distribution. With Sunbelt’s natural ability to attract buyers, we then ask each prospective buyer to sign a non-disclosure agreement, as well as disclose their financial data demonstrating their ability to purchase the business. By the time a buyer/seller introduction occurs, a buyer has been through a multiple step process to better determine suitability and maintain confidentiality. EK: What is the current environment for buying and selling a business? Tim: The Greater Knoxville area is a great place to buy, sell, or operate a business based on a variety of factors, including the

region’s stable economy. The local economy is diversified into a variety of sectors with recent substantial growth in trade, utilities, transportation, and financial activities. The economy is also buoyed by an unusually high number of business incubator facilities and a labor force with one of the lowest turnover and absenteeism rates in the country. Additionally, Knoxville’s overall cost of living is among the most affordable in the country, combined with lower than average nationwide housing prices, low taxes, no state income tax, and low utility bills. Lastly, pent-up demand after the 2008-2009 economic crises and increased financing availability make the current environment excellent for buying and selling a business. EK: How can people with an interest in buying or selling a business contact you? Blake: Tim and I are always excited to speak with anyone who is considering buying or selling a business. To further assist business owners in this decision making process, we are happy to provide a FREE BROKERS OPINION OF VALUE to the readers of Everything Knoxville. We can be reached by phone at 865-964-7786 or 865-951-3651 or by email at bhenry@sunbeltnetwork.com or tvarney@sunbeltnetwork.com to discuss this or any other questions you may have. EK: In closing, is there anything you would like to add? Tim: Blake and I thoroughly enjoy working with business owners that in many cases have invested a large portion of their lives building a successful business. We look forward to guiding each of our clients through the process achieving the maximum value for their business, both for them and their families, and to help oversee a successful transition that allows their business legacy to continue in the future.

that elle Boutique is celebrating its 10th anniversary. What’s most encouraging to us is the knowledge that you, our Knoxville community, have been SO very supportive, and for that we thank you… a million times thank you! While we’ve had tons of fun during the past decade, there have also been countless late nights by the staff that have taken place in order to have our little store running for you, and we can’t thank you enough for all of your support and encouragement. We’d like to mark our 10th anniversary by inviting you to celebrate with us on Friday, May 5th, from 10 am to 6 pm. We know many boutiques (including us) throw the usual sip and shop sale, but we really want to make you feel appreciated for these 10 years. We’ll be offering a lot of smiles, laughs, and good conversations with a side of snacks, drinks, 25-75% off sale racks, and some ridiculously good giveaways, because we appreciate you so much! Here are a few staff favorites to stock up on during our sale: Denim (because we have the best, that’ll last for years, and it’ll be a steal of a deal), Melody Vintage Jewelry (because it never goes on sale, and her pieces are amazing), Mother’s Day gifts from our other jewelry lines and amazing skin care products, Eberjey swimsuits and coverups (so you can enter summer in style), and a good causal day dress you’ll wear in the summer months ahead. We hope you feel in your shopping experience what is most important to us at elle. We don’t simply exist just to provide you with the “latest trends” or “coolest new fad.” We consider each of you individually, your unique style, things you’ve asked for, and how we can make you feel your best. We’re committed to offering you the highest quality clothing brands at reasonable prices where your dollars can be confidently spent. And, most of all, our goal is to provide you with the highest level of customer service possible to show our true appreciation for giving us a chance to not just hang in your closet, but to also be your friend. Thank you for believing in us, and we look forward to hopefully many more years with all of you! See you on May 5th!

Add That Finishing Touch with Hardwood Floor Vents

W

HETHER YOU are installing new hardwood flooring or restoring your existing hardwood floors, improve their new, showroom quality look with flush wood floor registers from European Fine Hardwood Floors. These vents sit completely f lush with the top of your hardwood floor, providing a nice, clean look that is easy to clean with vacuums and your favorite hardwood floor cleaner. Another benefit is that you can easily remove the vent from the built-in surround for easy access to the duct opening, and they come with built-in dampers to allow airflow, or you can shut off that particular duct. “After completing new hardwood flooring installation or a total hardwood flooring refinishing project, the conventional metal HVAC floor vents can dramatically detract from the natural beauty of your home’s hardwood f loors,” said Valera Tomescu, owner of European Fine Hardwood Floors. “There’s no need to compromise between aesthetics and function, because our flush wood floor registers enhance the appearance of your home’s hardwood f looring rather than detract from their beautiful and timeless look.” Flush wood f loor registers from European Fine Hardwood Floors are available in a variety of styles and wood types to perfectly complement your hardwood flooring. These exquisitely hand-crafted

This 10th anniversary season of Broadway, featuring six shows and a total of 32 performances from December 2017 to July 2018, includes something for everyone. Last season broke records for Broadway attendance and ticket sales, and the Tennessee Theatre expects a record-breaking 10th anniversary season. “Part of the mission at The Tennessee Theatre is to offer diverse, high-quality entertainment, which includes bringing a wide variety of Broadway shows to Knoxville,” said Becky Hancock, Executive Director of the Tennessee Theatre. “Broadway brings together long-time theatre attendees and first-timers to this beautiful venue to experience a popular art form and create lasting memories in the Official State Theatre of Tennessee. The 10th anniversary season will be one to remember, so I hope that Broadwaylovers from all over East Tennessee and beyond will join us!” The 10th anniversary kicks off with Kinky Boots, Broadway’s huge-hearted, high-heeled hit! With songs by Grammy® and Tony® winning pop icon Cyndi Lauper, this joyous musical celebration is about the friendships we discover and the belief that you can change the world when you change your mind. Inspired by true events, Kinky Boots takes you from a gentlemen’s shoe factory in Northampton to the glamorous catwalks of Milan. With direction and choreography by two-time Tony Award®-winner Jerry Mitchell (Legally Blonde, Hairspray) and a book by Broadway legend and four-time Tony Award®-winner Harvey Fierstein (La Cage Aux Folles), Kinky Boots is the winner of six Tony Awards®, including Best Musical, Best 14 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE May 2017

The season continues at the infamous Kit Kat Klub, where an intoxicating Emcee, singer Sally Bowles, and a raucous ensemble take the stage nightly to tantalize the crowd – and to leave their troubles outside. Cabaret is based on Roundabout Theatre Company’s Tony Award®-winning production by Director Sam Mendes (Skyfall, American Beauty) and Rob Marshall (Into the Woods and Chicago, the films). Come hear some of the most memorable songs in theatre history, including “Cabaret,” “Willkommen,” and “Maybe This Time.” Leave your troubles outside – life is beautiful at Cabaret– John Kander, Fred Ebb, and Joe Masteroff ’s Tony®-winning musical about following your heart while the world loses its way. There truly is no place like home as the greatest family musical of all time, the wonderful Wizard of Oz, twists its way into Knoxville! The entire family will be captivated as they travel down the yellow brick road and beyond with Dorothy, Toto, and their friends the Cowardly Lion, Tin Man, and Scarecrow in this lavish production, featuring breathtaking special effects, dazzling choreography, and classic songs. A spectacular celebration of the iconic 1939 MGM film, the Wizard of Oz will blow you away from the moment the tornado touches down and transports you to a dazzling Oz, complete with munchkins and flying monkeys. Don’t miss the chance to travel over the rainbow and experience this national treasure on stage. It began as one man’s story... became everyone’s music... and is now Broadway’s musical. Motown the Musical is the true American dream story of Motown founder Berry Gordy’s journey from featherweight boxer to the heavyweight music mogul who launched the careers of Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson, and many more. Motown shattered barriers, shaped our lives, and made us all move to the same beat. Featuring classic songs such as “My Girl” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” experience the story behind the music in the record-breaking smash hit. Beautiful – The Carole King Musical tells the Tony® and Grammy® Award-winning inspiring true story of King’s remarkable rise

to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband, Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends, Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Along the way, she made more than beautiful music; she wrote the soundtrack to a generation. The 2017-2018 season concludes with The Book of Mormon, back by popular demand following its record-breaking engagement in 2016. This outrageous musical comedy follows the misadventures of a mismatched pair of missionaries, sent halfway across the world to spread the Good Word. Now with standing room only productions in London, Australia, on Broadway, and across North America, The Book of Mormon has truly become an international sensation. Contains explicit language. French Bread

Ingredients: » 1 3/4 cups warm water (100 to 110 degrees F) » 2 envelopes Fleischmann’s Active Dry Yeast » 1 Tablespoon Mazola Corn Oil » 2 teaspoons salt » 5 to 5 1/2 cups all-purpose flour » Cornmeal » 1 egg white beaten with 1 Tablespoon water Directions: Place water in a large, warm bowl. Sprinkle in yeast; stir until dissolved. Stir in oil, salt, and enough flour to make a soft dough. Knead on floured surface until smooth and elastic, about six to eight minutes. Place in greased bowl, turning to grease top. Cover; let rise in warm, draft-free place until doubled in size, about 30 to 45 minutes. Punch dough down. On floured surface, divide dough in half; roll to 15x10-inch ovals. Roll up from long ends to make loaves. Pinch seams and ends to seal; taper ends. Place (seam sides down) on large greased baking sheet sprinkled with cornmeal. Cover; let rise in warm, draft-free place until doubled in size, about 30 to 45 minutes. Brush with egg white mixture. With a sharp knife, make four or five diagonal cuts (1/4-inch deep) on top of each loaf. Bake in a preheated 400 degree oven for 25 minutes or until done. For crispier crusts, brush two more times with egg white mixture after 15 and 20 minutes of baking time. Remove from sheet and cool on wire rack.

HE ARTS & CULTURE

Alliance is pleased to present five new exhibitions at the Emporium Center from May 5-26. A public reception will take place on Friday, May 5, from 5 to 9 pm to which the public is invited to meet the artists and view the artwork. Most of the works are for sale and may be purchased through the close of the exhibition. “6 to 96: The Stevens Family” in the Lower Gallery Very few artists have been successful without the contributions of family, community, and teachers. “6 to 96: The Stevens Family” is a group show consisting of artists from an extended family with ages ranging from six to 96 years old. Like the distance between six and 96, there is a spectrum of styles, perspectives, and experiences displayed. There is an inherent poetry created by the family unit. It is where one first learns to love, function, forgive, and inspire. “6 to 96” is a show about the grace and beauty that emerges when immersed in a supportive creative environment. Exhibiting artists include Nate Butkus (drawing and mixed media), Ray Butkus (ceramist and jeweler), Virginia Butkus Gould (painter), Jonathan Grant (painter), Kathryn Lindsay Grant (painter), Allison Rae Nichols (painter), Carl Stevens (functional design), Carol Grant Stevens (painter), Charles Stevens (sculpture and jewelry), Connor Stevens (drawing), Mark Stevens (photography), Terry Stevens (painting), and William Stevens (painter and sculptor, deceased). Luis Velázquez: Retrospective 19372016 and Family Continuity in the Balcony Gallery In this retrospective of Luis Velázquez, curated by Dina Ruta, the public will have the opportunity to contemplate his artistic trajectory. Velázquez was born in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, in 1937 and worked as a civil engineer, a community activist, and an artist 20 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE May 2017

who liked to paint landscapes and portraits. He used primarily oil, and all through his work, one can see his interest in landscapes. Every piece of art is a mirror that reveals his acute vision and is testimony to his perceptions, dreams, and memories. Reality was a single element and is reflected in his paintings. His technique was a calculated elaboration of the chromatic plane. His brush was free, his palette colorful, vibrant, and full of light, and his scenes were always full of life. His favorite inspirational sites included Puerto Rico and the Smoky Mountains. She also taught Drawing and Ceramics at Southwestern Community College in North Carolina. She was also an artist assistant to Tennessee-based glass artist Richard Jolley. Her work directly responds to the contradictions and complexities of life. She strives to create beauty out of chaos. Works by Heather Huebner on the North Wall Heather Huebner grew up in a suburb east of Cleveland, Ohio. Her body of work is creating abstracted memories and/or thoughts of landscapes into paintings, influenced by growing up on Lake Erie.

Stephen Spidell

“The first half of my work was done by using fluid materials and allowing them to dry over time, letting nature take its course upon the pigments,” said Huebner. “The process in which they are created – pouring onto the canvas – has the same effect as the fluidness of bodies of water on land or on a shoreline. Just as a puddle may sit for days and eventually evaporate, leaving some sediment behind, so too do these pigments. For me, these marks create a personal connection to experiences I’ve had in the past. A unique mark or color or texture invokes the imagery of a landscape in my memory.” The second half of Huebner’s work is fantasy. The shapes, colors, and compositions have been determined by a feeling of unknowing and are structured on ideas of what could be rather than what she has seen in the past. S t e p h e n S p i d e l l : I t e ra t i o n s o f Movement in the Atrium Stephen Spidell’s latest body of work exists merely for your aesthetic pleasure. His charcoal and pastel drawings abstract human hair to create close-ups and landscapes. The emotive marks create waves and undulations that replicate the dynamism of the tress while contriving contrasts of value and texture. Stephen currently resides in his hometown of Knoxville. His art education started at age seven when he trained under Janice Fancher, and he received his Associate of Arts in Studio Art from Pellissippi State. He is mainly known for his charcoal abstractions of hair, but he continues to indulge in other media, including graphite, pen and ink, and pastel; his other subject matter includes botany and the human figure. The exhibitions are on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. Hours are Monday through Friday 9 am to 5 pm. The Emporium will be closed on May 29 for the holiday. For more information, call 865-523-7543 or visit www.knoxalliance.com.

FTER THE SUCCESS of Dolly Parton’s NBC movies about her childhood, Pigeon Forge’s newest dinner theatre attraction is telling a special story very close to her heart. Dolly Parton’s Smoky Mountain Adventures Dinner and Show will take guests on a journey they will not soon forget. “Now that Jennifer Nettles and Rick Schroeder have made my parents famous, I thought it was time to tell a story about them before I was around stealing the spotlight,” Parton explained with a laugh. “Things were a lot more exciting before I was born, and you’ll see it in this show! I am really looking forward to seeing the finished product after all the work we have put in this winter.”

passion in life, and East Tennessee is where she draws her inspiration from. Judy truly enjoys capturing everyday subjects, including local scenery, animal life, f lowers, fascinating architecture, landscapes, and still life. Whether she’s depicting the captivating eyes of a loving dog or the rusting paint on an old truck in a hayfield, Judy paints in a strikingly realistic manner, with a unique sensitivity to the finest detail, for which she has been recognized with many awards for her fine art creations. “I enjoy everything about the painting process, from the visualizing I do in my head long before the painting begins, to the chemistry of the art materials, to the challenges every new work presents,” said Judy. Judy has developed a distinctive style with dynamic use of color and dramatic lighting effects. She uses bold contrast and sharp edges to carry the viewer’s eye to the center of interest, softening and muting other areas of the painting. “I aim to preserve a moment, hoping that I can make others see more in my painting than they would see if the same subject were really in front of them,” she said. Judy’s work is in private collections worldwide, including that of a member of renowned artist Andrew Wyeths’ family. Judy also welcomes commissions. Gallery on Main is proud to present the arts and crafts of local and regional artists and artisans at their gallery located in historic downtown Sweetwater. Their collection is available for both viewing and for purchase. Gallery on Main also offers art classes to the public.

AVERAGE

female shopper has several sizes hanging in her closet… so why are you a size 6 in some brands and a size 10 in others?? Alfredo Cabrera, author of 101 Things I Learned in Fashion School, explains. “Most companies start with a size 8 production pattern which sometimes gets shifted larger or smaller. A highfashion 8 isn’t typically as large as a mass-market brand’s size 8.” Even in Europe, where measurements are standardized by law, there can be some variation because a designer

may decide to slide a garment’s waistline above or below a woman’s natural waistline. Our experience has been that European lines, as a rule, are approximately 1-2 sizes smaller than your average fit. This is where an experienced sales clerk can be very beneficial as you shop, many times suggesting that you begin trying on certain lines a size or even two above what you normally wear. Don’t limit yourself to a certain size… be open to some variation… basing your decisions on style, designer and your individual sales associate’s advice. Remember… we have seen the

styles tried on, trying many on ourselves to better advise our customers of the fit. The very best way to ensure a good fit is to try on several sizes. Remember to trust your personal sales associate and the mirror instead of the digit on the label! We are here to advise you on the size and fit of your selections; however, for men who are purchasing a gift for Mother’s Day, may we suggest a beautifully designed, boxed and gift wrapped gift certificate! Always a perfect gift! Happy Mother ’s Day and Happy Shopping!

wounded Master Sergeant Jeffrey Mittman on July 7, 2005, in Baghdad, Iraq. Though within 30 minutes of the attack Mittman was airlifted to a hospital in Baghdad, he sustained permanent bodily damage. When he awoke one month later at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., he was blinded in his left eye, his right arm was badly damaged, and he had lost his nose, lips, and most of his teeth. After the U.S. invaded Afghanistan in 2001, tales like Mittman’s have become increasingly more common. The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq created more injuries resulting in blindness than any conflict since the Civil War. Advanced medical technologies have enabled more service personnel to survive serious injuries, which in prior wars

would have resulted in fatalities. Back at home, Mittman faced many roadblocks to rehabilitation. Today, as it was back then, 70% of working-age people who are blind cannot find jobs. Mittman chose to become involved in a training program with National Industries for the Blind (NIB) through the Warrior in Transition Program. In this role, he supports a critical mission of employment for people with disabilities. He recently received the prestigious “Oz Day” award, presented to a federal employee or member of the military who demonstrates exceptional service in promoting employment opportunities for people who are blind or severely disabled. “I decided long ago that I can either own my experiences and learn from these experiences or I can let them own me,” said

Mittman. “I chose the former. I am humbled and proud to receive this honor, and I am eager to continue to be an example to our wounded warriors and other individuals with disabilities, showing them what is possible.” Through the Wounded Warrior Program at NIB, wounded veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts can become informed about training, job placement, and career opportunities within NIB and 90 associated non-profit agencies across the country. NIB’s mission is to enhance the opportunities for economic and personal independence of persons who are blind, primarily through creating, sustaining, and improving employment. This Memorial Day remember all of those who have served or are serving our country. For more information about the Wounded Warrior Program, visit www.nib.org. May 2017 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE 25

Annuities aren’t always the best option for every individual, but there is a time and place for everything. When you’re trying to maintain low client expenses and create a comprehensive financial plan, an annuity considered holistically may not be the best financial vehicle. So what are some reasons you don’t need an annuity? Perhaps you possess the necessary expertise required to manage your own investments and you don’t need an annuity company to do that for you. There are also other investment vehicles such as mutual funds or ETFs available that offer higher potential returns. And you can often invest money with a broker for far less than you can with a company offering annuities. Another reason an annuity might not be your best choice is that the fees are extremely high. Ask yourself these questions. What is

my surrender charge? What are my mortality and expense fees? What is my cap rate? Will I participate in dividends? The list goes on and on. When you compare these fees to other investments, you often discover that your fees can be two and three times more. If you manage your finances well and spend less than you earn, you won’t benefit from an annuity. The same will be true if you like to control how your money is invested. Annuity companies place your money into their general account, which they in turn invest. If you’re hoping to earn the maximum return on your investments, know that an annuity invested in the same investments will earn far less after all of the annuity charges and fees are factored in. So when is an annuity a wise choice? When you need to defer taxes. However, if you won’t benefit from these tax deferral features, then you probably don’t need an annuity. Before you decide to invest in an annuity, make sure you understand all the complexities of that particular annuity. What you don’t know could end up costing you. If an

annuity is merely being sold to you and you don’t understand how it will fit in with your financial plan, be sure to ask questions until you’re comfortable. And if you already have a hefty retirement nest egg, an annuity, created to prevent you from outliving your retirement money, may not be the right choice. For more information regarding annuities or questions about other financial matters, I invite you to contact us at Heritage Investors at 865-690-1155.

IS THE SEASON. No, not

that season. Wedding season. Wedding season is indeed upon us. The calendar fills with engagement parties, bridal showers, rehearsal dinners, and, of course, wedding ceremonies and receptions. Historic Westwood, an 1890 Victorian house museum, has been associated with weddings throughout its 130 year history. In fact, it was built as a wedding promise by John Edwin Lutz for his bride, Adelia Armstrong Lutz. The same Victorian period that produced beautiful architecture and decoration also inspired many wedding traditions that we still celebrate today. Queen Victoria set the trend for brides, like Adelia Lutz and her daughter after her, to don white or ivory for their special day after she was married in a white, heavy silk satin dress in 1840. She also wore a crown of orange blossoms, previously unseen on brides. The 1890s saw bustles disappear and large sleeves come into fashion. White kid gloves were long enough to tuck under the sleeves and had a slit in one finger to slip the ring on without removing the glove. Slippers were of white kid, satin, or brocade, and the heels rose to one inch. Visitors to Historic Westwood can gaze upon Louise Lutz Holloway’s ivory wedding dress dotted with seed pearls, satin slippers accented with beaded bows purchased in New York, and her flower crown. Next to her wedding day ensemble is the framed original invitation to her June 28, 1911 wedding. Some traditions pre-date Victorian times. June has always been the most popular month, for it is named after Juno, Roman goddess of marriage. She would bring prosperity and happiness to all who wed in her month. June also signified the end of Lent and the arrival of warmer weather. We have all been to a wedding and enjoyed the artistic flair of the groom’s cake. Oftentimes it is inspired by the groom’s interests or passions, such as golf, his trusty labrador, or the Vols. The custom originated with Victorians and was made popular in the south during the same time. Cake was considered the wedding favor for your guests. It has been said that single ladies would take their piece of cake home and tuck it beneath their pillows in hopes of dreaming of their future groom – hence the term groom’s cake. Many women can recall having their wedding gifts on display in their parent’s home for people to come and see. This custom began late in the Victorian era, around the time that wedding guests started to bestow more significant gifts on the bride and groom. Prior to that, the bride’s family traditionally provided all household supplies that the 28 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE May 2017

couple might need through the trousseau. Guests gave smaller, token gifts, if anything at all. Giving a substantial wedding gift may have been taken as an insult, implying that the guest thought that the bride’s family could not properly provide for their daughter and new son-in-law. By the close of the 19th century, manufactured goods had become increasingly accessible, and people started the wedding gift traditions that we know today. Appropriate wedding presents commonly accepted were things like china, crystal, silver, and fine linens. These items made for lovely displays in the bride’s home.

Adelia Lutz, original resident of Westwood and accomplished artist, had a vast, handsome studio space on the east side of the house. In photographs from her daughter Louise’s wedding in 1911 and from her granddaughter, Cecil Holloway Matheny’s, wedding in 1933, one can see the room is filled with silver, crystal, lamps, and other beautiful gifts from guests. For Louise’s wedding reception at Historic Westwood in 1911, the family added string lights to the front porch to commemorate the celebration. We keep string lights or party lights on the front of the house all year-round for that reason. Historic Westwood is now the headquarters of Knox Heritage and also a special event venue, where weddings are still celebrated, continuing the century-old tradition. Built as a “wedding promise” in 1890 by John Edwin Lutz and his wife, Ann Adelia Armstrong Lutz, the house and grounds of Historic Westwood offer a beautiful and unique setting for your event in Knoxville. For availability, pricing, and to schedule a tour of the property, call 865-523-8008 or visit www.historicwestwood.org.

Friends of the Smokies Foot Race Returns to Cades Cove

UNNERS… on your marks

and mark your calendars! At the Knoxville Marathon last month, the Knoxville Track Club announced that Friends of the Smokies is set to host the Cades Cove Loop Lope on Sunday, November 5, in Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP). Billed as a “onetime-only” event in 2010, the park service approved the highly acclaimed foot race for a return to Cades Cove this fall. “We are very excited to bring this race back to such a beautiful part of our national park,” said Jim Hart, Friends of the Smokies President. “This is a unique way to experience the splendor of the Cove and raise money to protect it for future generations at

the same time.” This year Friends of the Smokies will provide $1.4 million for critical park projects, including more than $90,000 in historic preservation and wildlife management programs in Cades Cove. For GSMNP Superintendent Cassius Cash, the race marks an opportunity to connect with the next generation of public lands stewards who are active in our national parks. “We are pleased to work with the Friends to offer this opportunity that supports the park and encourages people to use the park for fitness,” said Superintendent Cash. “The park provides an incredible setting for people to improve mind, body, and spirit.”

November’s Cades Cove Loop Lope will offer pre-registered runners a choice of the full 11 mile loop or a 3.5 mile loop course. Registration will open on August 1st and will be hosted by Knoxville Track Club, who will also be timing the race. More details about this November’s race, including cost and online registration, will be posted to www.CadesCoveLoopLope.com in the coming weeks. Friends of the Smokies is an official nonprofit partner of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and has raised more than $55 million to support critical park programs and maintain the Smokies as a crown jewel of the National Park Service. Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center Announces 14th Annual Heritage Center Gala and Auction on May 20

REPARATIONS ARE

continuing for the Great Smoky Mountain Heritage Center’s Heritage Happening Gala and auction presented by Northwestern Mutual, Kevin Proffitt, Managing Director. The theme of this year’s fundraising event is “Celebrating the Smokies,” which echoes the purpose of the Heritage Center to preserve, communicate, and celebrate the rich history of the Smoky Mountains and their people. The Gala will be held at the Heritage Center in Townsend on Saturday, May 20. It will feature both silent and live auctions, as well as an elegant dinner catered by Rothchild Catering of Knoxville. This year’s live and silent auctions feature more unique and exclusive items than ever before. Among the one-of-a-kind offerings at the live auction will be a special work by a local artist honoring the Smokies’ recovery from the devastating fires to be unveiled at the Gala, a catered tour of the Elkmont fireflies for 16 people, a private viewing site for the August 21 solar eclipse with catering by renowned chef Peter Glander, and an intimate wine dinner for four prepared by Chef Mike Blair in the winner’s home featuring a bottle of Chateau

Lafitte Rothschild 1999, which commemorates the eclipse of that year. All looking for unusual gifts or for a treat for themselves will find something to please at this event, thanks to the generosity of donors all across East Tennessee. You can preview both silent and live auction items by clicking the Auction Catalogue link on the Heritage Happening website at www.auctria.com/ auction/HeritageHappening2017. Items are continually being added, so check the website frequently. Online pre-bidding on silent auction items will be available from May 1st to midnight on May 14th, and a code to access the auction site will be emailed at the start of pre-bidding to those who have purchased Gala tickets. The Heritage Center Guild was founded by a group of 21 women in 2003 with a goal of helping to raise funds for the yet-to-bebuilt Heritage Center museum. According to the Guild’s mission, it annually hosts the Heritage Happening auction and dinner to help support the continuing development of the Center and its extensive educational programs for children. This year more than 8,000 students are expected to participate in the Center’s unique educational

programs. Commenting on the Guild’s role in the Heritage Center’s story, Director Bob Patterson said, “We could not do educational programming, bring in new exhibits, maintain our grounds, and fund transportation for visiting school children, among many other needs, if it were not for this Guild. In addition to their fundraising efforts, they volunteer thousands of hours each year in support of school field trips, festivals, and concerts.” Tickets to “Celebrating the Smokies” can be purchased by calling the Heritage Center at 865-448-0044 or online at www. gsmheritagecenter.org. Tickets are $125 per person, $90 of which is tax deductible. The Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center is 501(c)(3) Museum and Cultural Center. The Heritage Center is open Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday from noon to 5 pm. Admission is free for Heritage Center members, adults are $7, seniors 60+ and children ages 6-17 are $5, and children 5 and under are free. and/or a music nut, you have heard of – and probably all about – the Beach Boys and the various members of the band. Of all the music they recorded, probably the most lauded LP was their ground-breaking “Pet Sounds” – largely written by the band’s co-founder, Brian Wilson, and released 51 years ago this month. A music statistician friend of mine, Steve Orchard of 101.5 The Frog in Kingsford, Michigan, told me, “The last time Rolling Stone did their top 500 albums of all time, they had it ranked at number two. That’s some pretty weighty company right there for that album. You can see that it certainly faired a lot better over the years than its initial chart position would indicate.” Also chiming in with some input on the music legend was Boomerocity friend, Greg Harris, CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. “Things that connect millions of people when they hear the opening notes to not just one or two of these songs, but dozens of these songs,” he said. “You know, when you hear the organ come in or when you hear the harmonies come in at the start, that’s really where it’s at. It’s especially incredible that he made amazing, popular hits. His focused studio work on Pet Sounds and on Smiley Smile 30 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE May 2017

– the genius of his ear and the creativity that got those sounds – is just remarkable.” As Knoxville’s luck would have it, Brian Wilson is bringing his performance of Pet Sounds to the Tennessee Theatre on May 6th. And, as my luck would have it, I got to chat with Brian very briefly about the tour and the upcoming show. Brian is notorious for his short answers and abruptly ending interviews. He’s not being rude; it’s just how he rolls. Such was the case when his publicist called me for our interview. Our chat was to talk about his current tour that’s promoted as being the final Pet Sounds tour. I asked Brian why this was the case. “Well, we toured the world on a world tour, so we’re just about ready to wrap up,” he said. As for what fans can expect from one of the shows in this tour, he said, “Well, they can expect Pet Sounds and a lot of Beach Boys classics!” Of crowd reaction so far, Brian said, “Very good. It’s gone over very well!” Well known for his collaborative work, I asked Brian who he would like to work with in the future. His response: “Paul McCartney!” With up-and-coming artists emulating the classics, I asked Brian if he was listening to

any of those people. “Yeah, I’ve listened to quite a few,” he said. “I really like that kind of music!” With such a prolific body of work already to his credit, I asked what Brian would still like to accomplish in his career. “I would like to accomplish a rock and roll album,” he said. According to Brian, such an album is already in the works, and we should be able to hear it next year. What does Brian love most about life these days? “Music,” he said. “I love music mostly.” Wrapping up our chat, I asked the icon two final questions: What’s on his radar for the next year and how did he want to be remembered? “A rock and roll album and maybe another tour,” said Brian. “I want to be remembered as a good singer. Thank you for the interview.” As I said: Short and to the point, and when he was done, he was done. No harm, no foul, and still feeling good vibrations. Sitting in Cash? It’s Not as Risk-Free as You Might Think B Y Y V O N N E M A R S H , C F P ® , C PA

dilemma – you are sitting in cash because you don’t have the same tolerance for loss you once had. And if you rode the gut-wrenching ride of the 2008 stock market Yvonne Marsh, correction, you never want to CFP®, CPA feel that vulnerable again. Yet, unfortunately, you can’t stay in your “safe” money market account earning about 0.2%, because there is that sneaky thing called inflation chipping away at your purchasing power over time. Using historical inflation rates, a loaf of bread that cost $1.99 in 2002 would cost $2.70 in 2017, an increase of 36%. That same $1.99 invested at 0.2% for the same period would have grown to a whopping $2.05. So now you only have $2.05 to pay for a $2.70 loaf of bread. Do you see the problem? You have a negative real return in that “safe” investment. So what’s an investor to do? Here are a few tips for a solid investment strategy that can withstand the test of time: » Remember it’s not an “all or nothing” proposition between the total safety of banks and the total risk of the markets. Structure your investments into three buckets based on when you need it – now, soon, or later – and invest accordingly. » Dollar cost average into the market. Slowly invest into the markets on a monthly basis stretched out over a one to three year period. Then, if the market corrects, you haven’t put all of your money in at the peak, and you can continue to buyin at new market lows. » Don’t overlook the safety of insurance companies – Investments here can be tax-deferred, not subject to market loss and satisfy the adage that “slow and steady wins the race” compared to the volatility of the stock market. Banks themselves invest excess cash with insurance companies, and bank regulators consider those assets to be Tier 1 capital – among the safest banks are allowed to hold. You have a lot of options. Give us a call to set up a complimentary one-hour meeting. I can teach you how to create an investment strategy that matches your tolerance (or intolerance) for risk in the most tax-efficient manner. You’ll sleep easy and stay ahead of inflation!

May in the Garden BY LISA GRUGIN

ARE WE THERE YET?

If you have children, you’ve heard that question many, many times. That is sort of the way I feel about spring this year. Mother Nature has been teasing us since February with warm temperatures, only to turn around and break our hearts with sudden drops. May is usually the month when gardeners are finally free to plant, but don’t store those blankets and sheets yet in case she has a nasty surprise in mind! » My first topic is going to be a plea for the pollinators. They are in trouble, and that means we’re in trouble. One out of every three bites of food we eat is pollinated by bees, and some of the bee species are getting mighty scarce. I’m asking each of you to plant at least a couple of plants in your yard that will provide nectar and/or pollen and/or habitat for these guys. We have lists here at Meadow View, or you can do a quick search online. You can also help by choosing your chemicals wisely. Using the safest product that’s effective for your problem and applying it late in the afternoon when bees are not active will help prevent the accidental death of the good guys. » You still have plenty of time

to plant, but you need to be prepared to water. The spring rains tend to taper off after April, and what we do get in the summer tends to come as a torrent instead of a gentle soaker. If you don’t have a rain gauge (or if yours is one of those cute but somewhat useless ones), put a tuna or cat food can near your plants. If it doesn’t fill up by the end of the week (that’s about one inch), you need to drag out the hose and do a little hand watering. Remember that sprinklers don’t provide enough water for trees and shrubs. Drip irrigation is another good option. » You can still sow seeds of fast growing summer annuals like sunflowers and vegetables such as squash and melons. » If your spring blooming trees and shrubs need shaping, now is the time to do that. They rest after they bloom, and then they start forming buds for next year. Pruning while they’re resting means you don’t remove next year’s flowers. » Some of our trees and shrubs took a beating with the rollercoaster temperatures and spring storms. Broken, jagged areas should be cleaned

up with sharp pruners, loppers, or saws to help them heal. Outer leaves/needles on evergreens that were killed by the freeze can also be pruned now. Be careful, and ask us if you have questions. Pruning is like getting a haircut: You don’t want the word “whoops” to be involved! » Blasting shrubs that have finished blooming with a water hose will remove spent flowers that can become home to insects and fungus. This is also a good technique for dense evergreens that have insect problems, such as the Dwarf Alberta Spruce. A weekly blast will cut down tremendously on the insect population. » There is still time to fertilize your trees and shrubs, but remember that many plants are just fine without it IF your soil is good. If your trees and shrubs seem to be struggling, however, a little organic boost won’t hurt. Be careful not to overdo chemical fertilizers. » Annuals, on the other hand, should be fertilized on a regular basis. We do ours weekly with a mild strength water soluble type. If you used Osmocote or another slow release, it will need to be reapplied to heavy feeders (petunias, calibrachoa, mandevilla, etc.) at the end of the month. » Fungal spores are busily breeding in our warm, damp weather. Keep an eye on susceptible plants and start treating as soon as you see a problem. » Insects are also busily breeding. Check your plants often and you can stop an insect outbreak before you are infested. Remember to always start with the least toxic product first! » Stake tall perennials before they start flopping. You can buy supports and cages, or you can use bamboo or sticks. Old panty hose makes a great plant tie if you cut them into strips. » Start deadheading perennials and annuals to continue your bloom season. It’s best to pinch/cut back to the next leaf so you don’t have ugly stalks sticking up. Pinching back also makes leggy plants bushier. » Don’t cut back bulb foliage until it turns yellow. They have to store up energy for next year’s bloom. You can also divide bulbs now. » Never stop weeding. » Don’t forget the birds! Keep feeders full and birdbaths clean. Most birds are feeding hatchlings and appreciate the help. That’s all for this month. Stop by and see all the beautiful new things we have for your home and garden!

HE PERSON WHO WROTE “a man’s home is his

castle” was no doubt a man. Thirty-three years of marriage has taught me otherwise. As a husband, dad, and grandfather, I’ve learned that our home is far more than a place to sleep. Our home has become a family gathering place full of past memories and an entire future of memories yet to be experienced. I’ve also learned that, as the old saying goes, no matter where we entertain our guests, they seem to like our kitchen best. Despite all of the planning that my wife, Patti, and I have put into our entire home, our kitchen inevitably becomes the gathering place for our guests. And in anticipation of this fact, we designed a kitchen that is a friends and family gathering place yet retains that showcase gourmet look that we’re so proud of and that adds significantly to the value of our home. One big advantage that we had in designing our home’s kitchen is that we really put our extensive experience as owners of Granite Transformations to work. Our kitchen was designed to be both safe and durable. We used Granite Transformations’ engineered granite countertops that never need sealing, unlike conventional slab granite countertops. And unlike slab granite, ours are NSF certified and don’t emit potentially harmful gases such as radon. Designed by our own in-house design consultants, fabricated in our own Knoxville manufacturing facility, and installed by our own experienced craftsmen, our kitchen is both beautiful and, more importantly, safe and durable. If you would like to transform your ordinary kitchen into that gourmet appearance that you’ve been dreaming of, why not let my family help your family discover the Granite Transformations’ difference? With our wide selection of quartz, granite, recycled glass, and mosaic tiles, we can help you transform the ordinary into the extraordinary.

A Rose Is a Rose, But Who Wants Rosette?

R

OSE ROSETTE is a disfig-

uring and lethal disease of one of America’s favorite blooming plants. It is spreading throughout cultivated and wild rose populations by way of tiny mites that can blow about in the wind. An upcoming event will feature discussions of the disease’s threat and new research by University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture entomologists and plant pathologists that is helping to combat the disease. Rose enthusiasts and the interested pubic are invited to a Rose Rosette Field Day at the UT Plateau AgResearch and Education in Crossville. The event is scheduled for Saturday, May 20, from 9 am to noon CDT. Visitors may tour the rose rosette research plots where thousands of plants are being tested to see which treatments may help

mitigate the disease and which plants may offer some resistance. Attendees will also learn how to manage the disease and how to detect the eriophyid mite in their gardens. The mite is the known vector for rose rosette. UT’s nationally known rose researcher, Mark Windham, a professor of plant pathology, is coordinating the event and will be among the speakers. An “ask the expert” tent will be available for people to ask questions about their own plant problems. There is no cost to attend. The field day will be held at the Plateau Center’s Rose Rosette Research Plots on 2815 POW Camp Road in Crossville, next to the Clyde M. York 4-H Center. For more information, contact Windham at mwindham@utk.edu or call the Plateau AgResearch and Education Center at 931-484-0034.

our parents, grandparents, and even great grandparents purchased (and sometimes custom crafted) furniture that would be passed on to children and grandchildren. So unique, hand-crafted, and possessing a level of character uncommon in today’s offshore production line systems of furniture manufacturing, this furniture was destined to become heirloom quality pieces that would be treasured by future generations of family members. Gone are our nation’s finest furniture manufacturers whose factories once housed skilled artisans who produced some of the highest quality furniture in the world. Today even those furniture brands touted as producing the finest quality furniture in the world now produce their furniture on assembly lines in countries like Vietnam.

44 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE May 2017

Fortunately, Americans who still seek quality furnishings have rediscovered quality, hand-crafted Amish furniture. Buyers are surprised to discover that genuine Amish furnishings are available in a wide variety of styles, often upholstered, and not just the shaker or mission style for which Amish craftsmen are so well known. But even Amish furniture buyers need to exercise caution, as occasionally assembly line manufacturers employing Amish workers have been known to brand the furniture they sell as genuine Amish made. All of the furniture we sell at Amish Excellence, located in nearby and convenient Farragut, is produced one piece at a time in woodworking shops located on individual Amish family farms just as it has been for generations. I personally visit the home of each of the nearly three dozen craftsmen whose furniture I have chosen to market, and I communicate with them directly to ensure that each and every piece they hand craft is made to your exact specifications. As a result of this simple but

unique business model, our customers can purchase quality, custom made, hand-crafted furniture, often at prices below what they might expect to pay for similar, lower quality furniture elsewhere. Now celebrating our first year in Knoxville, Amish Excellence has become an overwhelming success thanks entirely to all of our wonderful customers who have encouraged and supported us. We are proud to announce that in order to meet the growing demand for our genuine Amish hand-crafted furniture, we will be more than doubling the size of our present showroom in early May. I would like to take this opportunity to invite the readers of Everything Knoxville to visit our newly expanded showroom to discover all of the possibilities that exist with genuine Amish furniture and to rediscover the lost tradition of creating heirloom quality furniture for future generations.

HANKS TO THE professionals at Undercover Systems,

you can enjoy unlimited out-of-door events this season that the entire family will enjoy all year-round. Spring is the perfect time to install the totally unique and proprietary underdeck ceiling system from Undercover Systems under your home’s existing raised decks. This underdeck system will ensure that this year’s events will be protected from unexpected and unwanted rain, searing summertime sun, and winter snow and ice. “Right now is the perfect time to weatherproof all of your outof-door events,” said Undercover Systems’ owner, Jim Conn. “Throughout the entire process, our skilled craftsmen work with you, each step of the way, until your project is completed to your total satisfaction. And because your project will be completed this spring, you can begin enjoying your new outdoor spaces before barbeque season heats up.” Undercover’s patented underdecking system is designed by and manufactured exclusively by Undercover Systems, unlike other systems that use off-the-shelf, one-size-fits-all underdecking products. And because Undercover’s system is supported entirely by their patented drain system and not your deck, air is free to circulate under your deck to ensure the longevity of your deck’s wooden structural supports, preventing them from premature failure. You’ll also appreciate Undercover Systems’ attention to detail, which comes from years of experience, as they help you craft a seamless transition from your home’s interior to your new out-ofdoor living spaces, which will perfectly complement your existing architecture and landscaping plan. You will also appreciate that every Undercover Systems decking project is personally supervised by Jim. A complaint-free member of the Better Business Bureau, Undercover Systems offers homeowners the peace of mind that they deserve in a building contractor. Five Great Reasons to Install Retractable Screens on Your Home This Spring B Y S T E V E K R AW C Z Y K , OWNER OF SCREENS OF E AST TENNES SEE

A breath of fresh air for your home Screens of East Tennessee 865.919.1615 steve@tennesseescreens.com

1. Let in fresh air and keep out insects. As summer approaches, we look forward to spending more family time on our patios and porches. Yet with warm weather comes bugs, making it often difficult to stay outside in comfort. Installing retractable screens on your home allows you to open up your living space without the nuisance of insects. Whether you need to screen your doors, windows, patios, or lanais, there’s a retractable screen solution that fits your needs. 2. Retract your screen for an unobstructed view. Retractable screens allow you to enjoy unimpaired views when the screens are retracted and let in fresh air without worrying about annoying insects when screens are in place. Large, motorized screens can blend form, function, and comfort. They can be recessed into the beams or walls of your home, thereby staying hidden when fully retracted. They don’t diminish your views or esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. 3. Preserve the look and design of your doorway. Homeowners are abandoning the idea of conventional fixed screens and adopting retractable screens as the ideal solution. Retractable door screens provide the utility of a conventional insect screen without the unsightly appearance of conventional door screens, making it a perfect addition for any home. 4. Let more natural daylight into your home when desired. Retractable screens are the versatile and cost-effective choice for creating a more comfortable living environment while reducing energy waste. For example, installing Phantom’s fully retractable screens in the windows on the west side of a home allows homeowners to block the hot afternoon sun in the warmer months or fully retract the screens to gain the maximum warming effects of the sun in the cooler months. 5. Enjoy the convenience of a professional design and installation. Homeowners often struggle to find screen solutions that match the design and size requirements of the openings they want to screen. For example, it can be difficult to install screens on large openings like a patio or balcony, especially if you’re considering recessed or motorized options. Professional installers eliminate these concerns by providing a screen solution that’s specific to your needs. To discover all the possibilities retractable screens can offer you and your family, contact me today.

6 Home Office Ideas Be More Productive

PAJAMA-CLAD workday and an

extremely short commute: Two of the many benefits of working from home. Each year more of us are working from home. A 2015 survey found that 20-25% of the American workforce telecommutes with some frequency. However, if your office is the dining room table or a desk stuck in the corner of a bedroom, the quality of your work and overall performance suffer because it’s not conducive to uninterrupted, productive time. Since many employers see working from home as an employee benefit, it’s important to have an efficient workspace that enhances productivity. Just like your traditional office environment, design and organization should be a priority at your home office. Tailored Living of Knoxville designers are experts in developing custom home office designs for maximizing storage, functional organization, comfort, and utility. Here are six ideas that will help streamline and improve your home office work life. » Establish a dedicated workspace A dedicated space makes it easy to focus

on the work at hand. While you may have to share the space with other family members during your non-work hours – such as the kids doing their homework – when you’re there, make it yours! Tailored Living can help design a multi-user home office that fulfills everyone’s needs. » Create comfort for better concentration An ergonomically designed custom home office, including proper desktop height and a comfortable chair, will make every workday a little better. You can work longer and more efficiently in comfortable surroundings. » Get organized Reduce stress and keep your workspace free of clutter by using drawers or cabinets for pens, paper, paperclips, files, etc. With custom-designed home office space, you can place printers, scanners, shredders, and other equipment behind closed doors until you need them so work surfaces stay clear. » Use locking cabinets and drawers Security is important, requiring locking storage for sensitive information or personal data. If you have shared space at home,

being able to lock up proprietary documents reduces the risk of losing crucial information. » Let there be light Position the desk so you get proper light from a window, and use window coverings that give complete light and privacy control. You can add desk task lights and stylish lamps where you need more illumination. » Personalize your work space What makes you happy: A favorite coffee cup, family pictures, or framed art that transports you to a favorite vacation spot? Personalize your space with things you love and make you smile so the time you spend in the space is more enjoyable and productive. Call Tailored Living today to help you create a space you’ll love to work in!

the dogwood blooms have finally blossomed, welcoming a much anticipated spring. For a few precious weeks, we can open up our windows to allow these mild spring breezes to refresh our homes. But all too quickly temperatures rise, windows close, and air conditioners are turned on. One challenge many of us experience during those periods of time when our homes are “buttoned up” is that dust and allergens are trapped inside. And our home’s HVAC and ceiling fans only help to redistribute these contaminants throughout our entire house, as is evident by the dust on your furniture. No amount of dusting seems to alleviate the sneezing and coughing that many of our family members experience from these contaminants. While there is no way to totally eliminate annoying dust and allergens in your home, there are steps you can take to significantly reduce these airborne contaminants. One sure fire way is to remove dust and allergens from your home’s carpeting and Oriental rugs. While vacuuming helps, your vacuum only removes a small portion of the accumulated contaminants that are trapped deep in the fibers of your home’s carpeting and rugs. At Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning, we offer homeowners two proven solutions to dust and allergens in your home. For your home’s wallto-wall carpeting, we offer a deep cleaning and extraction process that thoroughly cleans your carpets using only specially treated water from our truck-mounted cleaning plant that assures a level of clean that leaves our competition in the dust. For your home’s Oriental rugs, we offer our proprietary 11-step rug washing process at our state-of-the-art rug washing boutique that achieves a level of clean that is simply not achievable using any method. This early blooming pleaser is Baptisia australis, commonly referred to as blue false indigo. Blue false indigo gets this name from early settlers who used this plant as a substitute for true indigo, which is of the genus Indigofera, for making blue dyes. Other baptisia species occur in Tennessee, including Baptisia alba known as white wild indigo, Baptisia albascens known as spike wild indigo and Baptisia tinctoria known as horsefly weed. Blue false indigo is the most well known of the baptisia species that grow in Tennessee. This seemingly delicate perennial is actually a sturdy native plant that can be seen growing in open wooded areas and along stream banks in the Central Basin and in isolated populations on the Cumberland Plateau and Highland Rim. It usually reaches a height of three to four feet, is clump forming, and can become shrubby in appearance when fully grown. Its leaves are slightly pale green in color and grow in clusters of three small leaflets. It is easily found at garden centers. Baptisia flowers closely resemble the flowers of other plants in pea family and are a pale blue to purple. They grow in spikes that can be anywhere from five to 15 inches in length. In Tennessee, blooms will start showing in late April and will persist through the month of May and occasionally into early June. Baptisia attracts a wide array of pollinating insects looking for an early season nectary snack. It is a particular favorite of bumble bees. After it has finished blooming, an abundance of attractive brownish, bean-like seed clusters will form, giving the plant a unique and attractive appearance for the remainder of the growing season. In the fall, the foliage will turn yellow and then grayish silver before dying back to the ground after a heavy frost. Baptisia prefers a sunny to part shade location and likes moist, but well-drained soil. Baptisia australis can be planted in heavy clay soils and can tolerate a fair amount of moisture, making it a suitable plant choice for use in rain gardens. At the UT Gardens, Knoxville, baptisia has survived several years in conditions that range from extended 54 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE May 2017

swamp to long droughts. Most baptisia species are excellent sustainable plant choices and are relatively insect and disease-free. Occasionally false wild indigo will require some degree of staking and support due to the shrubby growth form, and when seed pods become abundant, it can cause the plant stems to droop. When looking for baptisia at your local garden center, the Decadence® series from Proven Winners is among the many choices available. Look for this baptisia at any of the UT Garden locations across the state of

Tennessee, and consider giving this early blooming perennial a spot in your garden! The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The Gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit www.ag.tennessee.edu/utg.

pianist, Mary McDonald, will perform a piano concert at First Farragut United Methodist Church, located at 12733 Kingston Pike, on Sunday, May 21, at 2 pm. The concert is free and open to the public. A reception will follow. Mary McDonald is well known in sacred music. With a career that spans more than 35 years, her songs appear in the catalogs of every major publisher of church music. More than 800 anthems, seasonal musicals, and keyboard collections testify to her significant contribution to sacred literature. Mary is a lifelong resident of Knoxville. She is the youngest in a large family, with a mother who played the piano by ear. Committed to teach her children to read music, her mother schooled some of the older children using an old piano method book, but after they left the piano, it was five-year-old Mary who would slip onto the bench and play the music she’d heard her siblings playing. She never looked back, and today her extraordinary natural

gifts have carried her into the hearts of people in congregations all across the country. No stranger to gl a ss c e il i ngs, he r energy and charisma served her well when she became the first woman President of the Southern Baptist Church Music Conference. But whether serving as accompanist for the Tennessee Men’s Chorale, her local church, or receiving prestigious composition awards for artistic merit like the John Ness Beck award, her desire remains the same: “To give God glory for the songs He has allowed me to compose. He alone is the true Creator behind my pen.” In 2011, after serving as sacred music editor for The Lorenz Corporation in Dayton, Ohio, for more than 20 years, Mary answered a new call. Now she takes her passion for music making directly to churches as an independent artist. She is in constant demand in churches across the nation for Composer

Weekends. In addition, Mary serves as host for many of the top Choral Music Dealer conferences in the country, where ministers of music gather to hear and bring back new choral music to their congregations. “I want my legacy to be that I lit up every room I walked into; that people felt better after being around me than they did before we came together,” said Mary. “The world will take care of belittling them and whittling them down to size. I prefer to be an encourager, a motivator, and to bring a smile and ray of sunshine and hope to their day. That’s how I want to be remembered, both through my music and my life.” This concert is the first in the 2017 “Music for a Sunday Afternoon” series. Concerts at First Farragut are funded by the Jerry Duncan Music Memorial Fund. First Farragut United Methodist Church is lcated in West Knoxville. From Knoxville, take I-40 west to the Watt Road exit. Turn left onto Watt Road and travel about 1.6 miles. Turn right onto Kingston Pike. First Farragut UMC is about .75 miles on the left.

Treat Mom on Mother’s Day

T

An Overview of Biltmore’s Gardens

HERE’S NO BETTER WAY

to honor and appreciate Mom than by bringing her to the estate on her special day! When George Vanderbilt began purchasing land for his grand country estate in 1888, the tracts were rough and overworked. Vanderbilt wanted to create a European country setting to complement his grand chateau, but he knew that he needed help to accomplish his goal. He hired Frederick Law Olmsted, the first American landscape architect, to fulfill his vision. It would be Olmsted’s final project and perhaps his most grand legacy.

The Creation of the Azalea Garden

To assist with the development of the gardens, Olmsted hired a Cornell-educated horticulturalist, Chauncey Beadle. Beadle was only hired temporarily in 1890 but ended up staying until his death in 1960. During his time on the estate, Beadle developed a love for azaleas and amassed a personal collection containing 3,000 plants. In 1940, he donated the entire collection to Biltmore. The shrubs were planted in the Glen, which is now known as the Azalea Garden thanks to Beadle’s extraordinary generosity.

Exploring Biltmore’s Gardens A Beautiful Vision for Biltmore

After visiting the estate for the first time in 1889, Olmsted wrote to Vanderbilt, “My advice would be to make a small park into which to look from your house, make a small pleasure ground and garden, farm your river bottom chiefly to keep and fatten livestock with view to manure, and make the rest a forest, improving the existing woods and planting the old fields.” Vanderbilt agreed with Olmsted’s recommendations, especially the suggestion that agricultural operations should be developed. Biltmore would be a working estate with a large farm carefully designed by Olmsted. But it would also be a place of beauty where impressive gardens would showcase nature’s glory. Olmsted included a combination of woodlands, fields, and gardens, which blended European design with his signature naturalistic style. His plans were for several formal gardens – a four-acre Walled Garden, a 16th-century Italian Garden with three reflecting pools, and a dramatic Rampe Douce and Esplanade lined by an avenue of trees at the entrance to Biltmore House. In addition to these more formal touches, Olmsted also planned a Shrub Garden, a Lagoon, and an elaborately designed three-mile Approach Road. Photos courtesy of The Biltmore Company

Library and South Terraces

The terraces were designed for Vanderbilt’s guests who preferred to stay close to Biltmore House. The South Terrace provides spectacular views, while the Library Terrace is shaded by an arbor of wisteria and trumpet creeper vines.

Italian Garden

The Italian Garden features classical statuary and three formal water gardens. Designed for quiet moments of reflection, this area also hosted tennis and croquet matches on the grassy area near the house. In warm weather, koi and goldfish swim in the pools among large Victorian lilies, water lilies, Lotus, and papyrus.

Shrub Garden

A path leads you through the Shrub Garden, notable for two N.C. State Champion Trees: The golden rain tree and river birch. This garden consists of more than 500 different varieties of plants, shrubs, and trees, many of which were popular in the early 1900s.

Spring Garden

This sheltered valley is surrounded by a grove of white pines and hemlocks. It is filled with an array of spring blooming shrubs, including forsythia, spirea, deutzia, and mock orange.

Walled Garden

This four-acre formal garden features flowerbeds planted in the “bedding out” style

popular in the late 1800s. Two arbors totaling 236 feet serve as its spine. The central beds feature thousands of tulips in the spring, vivid summer annuals, and a kaleidoscope of mums in the fall. Themed areas include a Victorian border, winter border, scented border, butterfly garden, and white border.

Historic Rose Garden

More than 200 varieties of heirloom and hybrid roses bloom in the Rose Garden. This garden also features historically inspired rose displays with may poles, plus a selection of varieties that are undergoing trial.

Conservatory

Designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt, this glass-roofed building nurtures exotic orchids, ferns, and palms and provides flowers and plants for the house just as it did in the Vanderbilts’ time.

Azalea Garden

This 15-acre garden – the largest on the estate – contains one of the country’s largest selections of native azaleas. It represents 60 years of work by Chauncey Beadle, an avid azalea collector and horticulturist hired at Biltmore in 1890 and who later became the estate’s superintendent. Also notable are the evergreen China firs – often mistaken for pine trees but with wide, flat, sharp leaves rather than needles – and the Katsura trees that display brilliant foliage and a distinctive “cotton candy” fragrance in autumn.

Bass Pond

Frederick Law Olmsted created this water feature from an old creek-fed millpond, adding a rustic boat house so the Vanderbilts’ guests could rest while enjoying the gardens. The arched brick bridge crossing the pond was featured in the 1991 film The Last of the Mohicans. May 2017 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE 57

TODD RUNDGREN Discusses Touring and White Knight B Y R A N DY PAT T E R S O N B O O M E R O C I T Y. C O M

S

OMETIMES, WHEN AN ARTIST of any stripe is

described, the word “genius” is used. I’d go so far as to say that it is often overused. One artist who more than deserves such a label is Todd Rundgren. Todd is one of those rare artists who requires more than one superlative to describe his creative output. Innovative? That’s a given. Prolific? Just look up his discography, and the answer will hit you between the eyes. Timeless? Absolutely. All of those are quite applicable. I’d also go so far as to describe Todd as often being on the bleeding edge of musical evolution, yet has the uncanny ability to create classics that will endure the ages. How else would you explain his popularity to sell out his own tour, be asked to join Yes on their Yestival tour, and the work with Ringo Starr’s AllStarr band for the past six years? His fans’ loyalty is the stuff of folklore. Affectionately referred to as “Toddies,” their passion for all things Todd could be to those of Deadheads and Trekkies combined. It was for the promotion of his current tour to promote his new CD, White Night, that I had the distinct privilege to interview Todd by phone. With an extensive tour schedule slated for this year, both for his own work as well as with Ringo Starr, I asked what Knoxville area Toddies can expect from his upcoming show. “Well, we’re doing pretty much the same thing on both tours, although probably a shorter set when we go out with Yes,” said

58 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE May 2017

Todd. “Our own show is close to two hours. It’s a pretty high level of production this time. A lot of video. Full band and also background singers and stuff, so it’s a really big ‘shoe’ this time.” At the time of our chat, I hadn’t yet received an advance copy of Todd’s soon-tobe-released CD, White Knight. I asked him to tell me about it. “Yeah, an album doesn’t have to necessarily have a singular theme beyond the fact that I’m working with a lot of other musicians,” he said. “That’s a decision I made when Cleopatra approached me about making a record. I made most of all my recent records myself out on the island, because it’s too hard to call up somebody and have them come on over for a casual session. It requires a different process. But things have come along in recent years in terms of file sharing services and greater bandwidth available to people. It’s become a lot more commonplace to do these kinds of collaborations where you send files back and forth and you’re not necessarily in the same room. “So I thought I’d take advantage of that. I started calling up people who I wanted to work with. Whenever somebody agreed, I got the process started. There are actually more potential collaborators than appear on the final record just because at a certain point, you have a deadline. If there’s a musical theme in it at all, I was trying to recapture a little bit of a certain era where funk music and eighties synth-pop overlap. Kind of lush sounds of eighties synthesizers and the

funky bass lines of Earth, Wind & Fire and that sort of thing. That’s the area that I’m trying to be rutilant of in a musical sense, but the lyrics are any variety of things, but certainly more contemporary than that.” Closing out our chat, I asked Todd how he hoped to be remembered and what he hoped his legacy would be. He started off humorous and closed in a more serious tone. “Well, if you don’t leave a legacy until you die, ha! ha! That’s kinda sad, you know? If people can’t figure out what you’ve done until after you’re dead, that’s kind of – you really don’t want to have to go to that extreme to get remembered. I would rather be remembered while I’m still alive. Musical success is something that comes and goes. You’re popular. People forget about you. Maybe you can come back. Maybe you can find an audience to sustain you for the rest of your career – however long that lasts. The thing that I always wanted to do was to become a father. It’s not like a big public thing that I talk about all the time, but for me, personally, that’s the most important thing that I did was to become a father. That I’ll be remembered through the kids that I have, I guess. Ha! Ha! And what they do in life and their kids, as well, because I’m just part of a lineage of fathers and sons, anyway.” And that, my friends, is what makes Todd Rundgren a real man. You can read or listen to a much lengthier interview with Todd at www.boomerocity. com or catch him at the Bijou Theatre on May 31st.

“The Island of Dr. Libris” at Knoxville Children’s Theatre

K

NOXVILLE CHILDREN’S THEATRE presents a world-

premiere production of “The Island of Dr. Libris,” based on the 2015 New York Times best-selling novel by Chris Grabenstein. The play, adapted by Chris Grabenstein and Ronny Venable, will be performed May 5-21, Thursdays and Fridays at 7 pm, Saturdays at 1 and 5 pm, and Sundays at 3 pm. Young Billy Gillfoyle is spending the summer in a lakeside cabin that belongs to the mysterious Dr. Libris. But something strange is going on with Dr. Libris’ private bookcase. Whenever Billy opens the books, he can hear strange sounds coming from the middle of the lake. The clash of swords. The twang of arrows. Sometimes he can even feel the ground shaking. It’s as if the stories he’s reading are coming to life. But that’s impossible… isn’t it?

The play was written by Chris Grabenstein and Ronny Venable, who first met while performing at the Clarence Brown Theatre in Knoxville. They co-wrote the 1986 CBS movie The Christmas Gift starring John Denver. Grabenstein is the award-winning author of the New York Times best-seller Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library and co-author of the number one best-selling series “I Funny.” Both NYC playwrights will attend the 1 pm performance on May 13 and hold an informal Q&A session with the audience immediately following the show. The play is performed by 17 talented young actors from ages 8 to 16. Ethan J. Reed plays the enigmatic scientist Dr. Libris, owner of the seemingly magical island. Luke Carter will portray Billy Gillfoyle. Many famous book characters “come to life” during the show, such as Robin Hood, Maid Marion & the Sheriff of Nottingham (played

by P. J. Copeland, Annika Kallstrom, and Lucas Cunic), Tom Sawyer (Eason Bullard), Pollyanna (Brycen Ritchie), D’Artagnan & The Three Musketeers (C. J. Cyrus, Draven Copeland, Braxxton Sommers, Tanner White), Hercules (Tripp Keeton), and more. The rest of the cast includes Emily Cyrus, Corbin Fram, Eva Rogers, Boone Sommers, and Wyatt Keeton. Quintin Rhodes, a student at Gresham Middle, serves as the show’s stage manager. Wheeler Moon, a junior at West High, is the show’s scenery and lighting designer. Bethany Moon, a junior at West High, will provide the costumes. Sean Sloas will perform the duties of Production Manager. KCT Producing Director, Zack Allen, is the show’s director. KCT is East Tennessee’s leading producer of stage plays for children. For more information, call 865-208-3677 or visit www. knoxvillechildrenstheatre.com.

Before You Cruise, Embark on a Fun-Finding Mission in Your Port City A R T I C L E C O U R T E SY O F B P T

HEN BOOKING A SEA CRUISE vacation, it may seem

like a good idea to schedule your flight to the port of departure for the same morning your ship sets sail. A same-day flight might appear to save you time and money, but travel experts warn this could turn into an expensive mistake. Should airline delays keep you from getting to the port on time, you could end up shelling out hundreds more dollars to book another flight just so you can catch up to your ship at the next port of call. In addition, the panic and worry that set in from even the smallest hiccup in your tight travel schedule can defeat the idea of a vacation. To start your relaxing ocean getaway in the right frame of mind, give yourself and your family an extra pre-cruise day in your cruise line’s port city. If everything goes as planned and you arrive the day before your ship casts off, your vacation can start early, too. Use the extra time to explore and kick back. You’ll find the home ports for these cruise ships are set up to accommodate and welcome cruise travelers. For example, if your ship happens to launch from Florida’s Port Canaveral, the world’s second-busiest cruise port, you’ll discover many area hotels have cruise package deals that include free parking, special nightly rates, and even free shuttle transportation to and from the port and to and from the airport. You’ll also find plenty to see and do locally. Cape Canaveral, near the Kennedy Space Center, is part of the east-central section of Florida popularly known as the Space Coast. Here there are numerous attractions and other entertaining diversions that can help create the perfect countdown to your cruise to paradise.

Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex

For visitors, the eye-opening facility that has propelled countless rockets and scores of shuttles out of our atmosphere also provides a full day’s worth of exhibits and hands-on learning about space exploration. Eyeball a 3-D image produced by one of NASA’s powerful space telescopes, inspect the Space Shuttle Atlantis up close, and “experience” life on Mars through an interactive display.

62 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE May 2017

Of course there are plenty of space memorabilia to examine and fascinating astronaut stories to absorb, all of which will round out your appreciation of what NASA has accomplished so far – and what is yet to come.

Rocket watching

While planning your overnight along the Space Coast, be sure to check www.spacecoastlaunches.com for schedules of rocket launches, public viewing sites, and special hotel packages. If you’re lucky, you might have an opportunity to witness the sights, sounds, and ground-shaking vibrations of a rocket launch. Cape Canaveral and the greater Space Coast area have numerous parks and observation points that make it easy to sit back and watch these rockets streak into the sky.

Shopping, arts, and entertainment

The Space Coast features many historic shopping districts to help you leisurely pass the time morning, afternoon, and evening. You can dine al fresco at one of the trendy independent restaurants or pick out a catchy new cruise outfit at a local boutique. The area also has a lively arts scene to help inspire you for your trip. Take in a pre-cruise musical performance or theater production at the Historic Cocoa Village Playhouse, or wander the assorted art galleries that dot the Eau

Gallie Arts District.

Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier

A historic landmark along a beautiful stretch of beachfront, the Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier was established in 1962. Its festival-like setting is the perfect backdrop for any traveler’s early escape from reality: Beachside restaurants and bars with live entertainment, an 800-foot fishing pier, spectacular views of the majestic cruise ships coming and going, rolling waves breaking and beautiful bodies surfing, the sparkling beach, and the glorious sunshine. What could be better?

Coastal escapades

You also can elude the crowds and pilot your own escapade along the area’s beautiful waterways. It’s easy to rent a boat and navigate the rivers and canals. You can look for dolphins and manatees or drop anchor at an island for a family barbecue and swim. Cast your line into the Banana River, pull into Sebastian Inlet State Park for snorkeling and scuba diving, or simply enjoy the journey and tie up at a waterside restaurant when hunger sets in. For planning some Space Coast fun and relaxation before you set off to sea on your cruise ship, you can peruse an extensive collection of local tourism ideas and resources at www.visitspacecoast.com.

Take A Pause for Clicking Paws

erable amounts of time running on hard surfaces, including concrete and blacktop, wear their nails down gradually, but dogs who primarily remain indoors or run on soft surfaces, such as lawns, require regular nail care. If you hear click, click, click on the floor when your dog walks, their nails need care. Nail care is crucial, because over time, long nails can be medically harmful to your dog. When nails constantly touch the ground, they exert force back into the nail bed, creating pain and pressure on the toe joint. Compromising your dog’s weight distribution and natural alignment leaves them susceptible to injuries and makes walking and running difficult. Long nails can also tear or split, which is extremely painful, and

neglected nails can actually curve and grow into the pad of the foot if neglected for an extended period of time. A dog’s paw is made up of five parts, with two types of nails and three different pads. Professional groomers understand each part of the dog ’s paw and the function of each. Nail maintenance for your dog is crucial. A “spa day” is not only fun for your dog but, more importantly, a healthy day. Zoo Knoxville Receives Largest Private Gift in History from Randy and Jenny Boyd Family

T

$5 million gift is transformational for zoo HE FAMILY OF Randy and

Jenny Boyd has made a $5 million pledge to Zoo Knoxville, the largest private gift in the zoo’s history. To honor their generosity, the zoo has named the new four-acre group of habitats for tigers, birds, and primates the Boyd Family Asian Trek. “Jenny and our family have always loved the zoo, so it’s personal,” said Randy Boyd. “The economic impact on the region is more than $34 million annually, but what children learn about care and love for animals when visiting the zoo is priceless.” The pledge makes it possible for the zoo to fulfill plans to construct new habitats and experiences for both animals and guests. In April, Zoo Knoxville will unveil Tiger Forest, the first completed project of a 10-year master plan to transform the zoo. The new Malayan tiger habitat and breeding facility is part of the Boyd Family Asian Trek, which will expand to include new primate habitats

for langurs and gibbons and a new café in 2018. The master plan also includes construction of a new reptile facility and otter habitat scheduled to open in 2020. “The legacy of the Boyd family’s commitment to our zoo started many years ago,” said Lisa New, President and CEO of Zoo Knoxville. “It was Randy’s vision while serving as the chair of our facilities committee that challenged us to think beyond anything we had ever done. Their gift will transform the experience we give our guests, the care we provide our animals, and the impact we will have in saving animals from extinction.” “This takes our zoo to the next level,” said Eddie Mannis, Chair of the Zoo Knoxville Board of Directors. “It is our goal to be the ‘must-see attraction’ in Knoxville and the ‘most talked about’ destination in the region. The Boyds’ generosity is the catalyst for these aspirations. We intend to welcome 800,000 visitors annually by 2025, and a majority

of those will be tourists contributing to our local economy. The Boyd commitment benefits not just Zoo Knoxville but our entire community.” Zoo Knoxville is a non-profit entity situated on 53 wooded acres just east of downtown Knoxville. Zoo Knoxville features exhibits of wild animals in natural habitats and is world renowned for its efforts in conservation and species survival. Zoo Knoxville is nationally accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and is committed to the highest standards in animal care and well-being, ethics, conservation, and education. Knoxville’s largest attraction, the zoo is open every day except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The zoo is open Monday through Friday from 9:30 am until 4:30 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 am until 6 pm. Admission and ticket sales stop one-hour before the zoo closes. ERHAPS BECAUSE I’m

67 years old, I think more often about those issues confronting other entrepreneurs my age. Whether those issues involve planning for retirement, health, or end-of-life considerations, most small business owners would be best advised not to postpone examining these very important issues for themselves. The truth is that far too many business owners have failed to put a comprehensive retirement plan into place. Perhaps they’re anticipating that the potential future sale of their business will provide the resources needed for retirement. But relying on the successful sale of your small business in the future to provide for your retirement is not without risks. Other business owners may be contemplating a continued stream of income during retirement after turning their business over to their children to manage. But if you lack a succession plan, that son-in-law you can’t stand could end up at the helm of that same company you worked a lifetime to build. Also, in the absence of a succession plan, the

divorce of one of your children could result in the dissolution of your company, all of which could be detrimental in the future to your retirement. If you believe that life will become sim-

Life has many moving parts, and delaying decisions on important issues that can impact your future will only compound the pressure you’re likely to experience later in life when you are forced to act. Also, inaction can create a level of anxiety that most people might

prefer to avoid. So how can you avoid this doom and gloom scenario? Find a trusted financial planner, one who will work closely with your attorney and accountant, who can help you find the answers to the questions you have, as well as the answers to questions you might not have even considered. Acting today will provide you with a level of confidence and the peace of mind that has likely been evading you, not to mention greatly enhancing your potential for a successfully and prosperous retirement. But your key to success rests on your decision to act today – not tomorrow, next week, next month, or next year. Imagine a future free from financial stress, where your income is assured and your company is continuing to operate efficiently and profitably while being managed by those individuals you’ve personally selected. Consider, too, that your spouse, children, and grandchildren will be provided for as well, because you chose to act and not to entrust your future to a roll of the dice. What are you waiting for?

She’s right – and she’s been named Knox County’s Teacher of the Year for high school grades. “I truly believe that quality, public education for all children is our best chance for a better world,” said Latus, who teaches Spanish at Bearden High. “It sounds cliché, but if we can give our kids a good start in life and the tools to think creatively and implement their ideas, the world will change for the good. I want to spend my life making that happen, in whatever ways I can.” Latus is in her third year at Bearden. After moving to Tennessee from Michigan 10 years ago, she started in Loudon County, then moved to Knox County in 2009. “When I was growing up, my teachers really created a home for me at school, and their care and dedication shaped my life in so many ways,” she said. “I feel fortunate to be able to pass on to my own students what my teachers provided for me.” Latus has a whopping three bachelor’s 64 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE May 2017

She took a roundabout path to becoming a teacher but quickly realized she loved working with high school students. “While I love Spanish, I still consider it to be merely the platform for where my heart is – working with kids to help them grow up to be strong and compassionate young adults,” she said. Latus’ days start around 7 am and go nonstop until 3:30 pm and often much later. In addition to teaching Spanish, she also maintains contact with parents and prepares materials for class. Outside of school, she’s often still grading papers or planning, in addition to training for triathlons and spending time with her husband and dogs. Latus is always up for dealing with the

I want them to learn what it means to be part of a community where their contributions matter and where others care about them, and thankfully I get to come home almost every day feeling like what I’ve done has made a difference!”

Should You Lease or Purchase Your Next New Car? B Y J O H N FAWA Z , C H F C ™ , C D FA ™ , C F P ®

EASING AN automobile often receives a bad rap. Despite representing only 20% of all new car transactions, I am convinced that more people John Fawaz should consider leasing their CERTIFIED FINANCIAL next vehicle rather than purchas- PLANNER™ ing it outright. Also, if you know what you’re looking for in a new car and negotiate wisely, you can actually save money by leasing. If you are fairly certain that you will need or want a replacement automobile after just a few years, then you should consider leasing. The average term of a new car loan is 65 months, while the average lease term is just 36 months. If you purchase a new car and trade it in before your loan is paid off, the value of the trade-in is unlikely to cover the remaining balance on your loan. If you don’t have a lot of cash to bring to the negotiating table, then a lease is a very viable option. Many leases require no money down, compared to a 20% down payment recommended for most new car purchases. Also, in most states, you pay sales taxes only on actual lease payments you make and not the entire vehicle price. If the possibility of future expensive repair costs concerns you, then you are strongly encouraged to consider leasing. New vehicle warranties typically last three years (the length of most leases), so you won’t have to worry about the repair costs associated with a leased vehicle. Some manufacturers, such as BMW and Hyundai, also offer free maintenance as an incentive. If you plan to drive more than 15,000 miles a year, then you should buy. A typical lease allows you to drive an average of 10,000 to 15,000 miles annually. You’ll pay a 20 to 25 cents per mile penalty for exceeding that limit, although you may be able to negotiate a higher mileage allowance on a leased car in exchange for a higher monthly payment. While driving an increased number of miles on a purchased vehicle lowers its resale value, this lower value is typically less than the excess mileage charges you will incur with a leased vehicle. Improve Communication in Your Family

I

B Y W E N DY FAU L K N E R

T PROBABLY isn’t surprising

to hear that poor communication is generally the cause of problems in the home. Poor communication doesn’t mean that people don’t talk to each other; they may talk to each other non-stop. However, they may not be communicating in the proper ways. When communication breaks down, conflicts, resentments, and feelings of loneliness can arise. There are components to having good communication, and it starts with the parents. When you learn these components and begin working them, the home should become more harmonious. Honor and Respect How good the communication level is within a family is dependent upon the level of honor and respect that is extended to one another. It starts with the parents. Whether couples realize it or not, if they do not respect each other in their thoughts, it can display itself in how they speak and act. Being respectful and honoring your partner involves more than just your words. It also involves body language. If you roll your eyes,

give your partner funny looks, or you do not give them your undivided attention when you should, your relationship can suffer, and children may also pick up these gestures and attitudes. Check your head. Are you having bad thoughts about your partner? If so, do what you can to get to the bottom of the resentment and fix it. Listening Too often in families people speak to each other, but they aren’t listening to each other. They are just waiting for the other person to be quiet so they can have their turn talking. In this situation, no one wins. Listening involves more than just hearing; it involves understanding what the other person is expressing, as well as making the heartfelt effort to understand how they feel. Doing this does not take away from how you think and feel. What it does is take the communication level to a higher place. A place where issues can be resolved and closeness can occur. Quality Time To have good communication within a family, there must be quality time. This

doesn’t just mean time spent together. Quality time means setting aside specific time in your day or week to touch base with each other on a personal level. Family life is busy. It is easy to lose contact with those in your home if you don’t make the commitment for quality time. Sometimes setting aside just 15 minutes a day is all that is needed to get the household back on track in the communication department. Start Now When one person in a relationship or family makes a change, the other people change, too. Why? They have to adapt to a new situation, because their old ways of interacting no longer work. Start now on being conscious of your communication patterns, and make changes for the better where needed. It will have a ripple effect throughout the home. Teaching Our Children to Be Givers

T

O D A Y W E H A V E many

people in our society complaining about what’s wrong with the world, our government, our country, the younger generation… the list goes on and on. Here’s the question: Are we raising a generation of children who will actively participate in making this world a better place, or are we raising a generation of children who, besides posting their recent grievances on social media, spend little time participating in real change? It’s never been more important to raise a generation of active doers than today. We need people who will problem solve, who will seek out those who need help, and who will not accept substandard conditions and policies that don’t benefit the majority as well as the minority. We need active participants!

66 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE May 2017

How do we start? We start by helping our children understand that they have special and unique talents and abilities that, when identified, can be used to benefit others. What is your child really good at? What is your child passionate about? What is your child striving to improve? As you and your child discuss this topic, you will hopefully be able to help your child identify their talents. Second, help your child brainstorm ideas of how they can put their talents into action for others. Perhaps your child is a great listener or a great storyteller, and they can use this talent to read to children who need extra help. Perhaps your child can play the piano and therefore agrees to play at the local nursing home once a month to share their talent with others. Perhaps your child is really good with animals, so they can volunteer to help at the local shelter. There are

so many things. It doesn’t matter what we do as long as we are helping our children learn the joy of serving and sharing. Parents, as we help our children give of themselves and their talents, we are giving our children the greatest gift we can give, and that is the gift of self respect, honor, and self-confidence. In addition, there is no greater joy than the joy that comes from serving others. We have a few places left in our Summer Manners Camps. For more information, visit www.TheEtiquetteFactory.com.

Acne is More Than Just Skin Deep H

IGH SCHOOL can be the best time of a child’s life. In the

classroom, on the stage, or on the field – there are plenty of opportunities to develop new interests, spend time with friends, and make lasting memories. However, many students struggle to enjoy these moments, because they’re worried about how they look due to the outbreak of acne. Clear skin is often a challenge for students, but the doctor and specialists at Southeastern Dermatology offer many services to help teens overcome acne and reveal a confident, beautiful face. While acne is predominantly a disease of adolescence, it often persists into adulthood. It is important to treat significant acne to prevent emotional as well as physical scars.

Matthew B. Doppelt D.O., F.A.O.C.D., F.A.A.D. Board Certified Dermatologist

What causes acne? There are many contributing factors that cause acne, including bacteria, hormones, inflammation, and clogged pores. Excess oil production, which is often the result of hormonal stimulation, combines with naturally occurring bacteria, resulting in inflammation that can clog the pores. The end result of this process is the eruption of a blemish. Types of acne When most people think of acne, they think of big red pimples. However, there are several types of blemishes that a person with acne may have to address, including blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, and cysts/nodules. Each of these kinds of blemishes responds differently to various treatments; therefore, it’s important to work with a trained specialist in order to properly address your acne situation. Acne treatment There are several approaches to treating acne. The one that’s recommended to you, or to your child, will depend on his/her unique situation. However, there are some common treatments: » Topical treatments: Topical acne treatments are those preparations that are applied to the skin. They may be in the form of a special wash, cream, or gel. They may work to kill bacteria, decrease the inflammation, or to dry the excess oil. Common topical treatments include benzoyl peroxide, antibiotics, retinoids, and salicylic acid. » Oral medications: Some acne cases require medication delivered in the form of a pill. For example, antibiotics can eliminate bacteria and minimize inflammation, while other medications work to balance hormones within the body. » Dermatology procedures: There are several dermatology procedures that can also help to clear up the individual’s skin. For example, a specialized chemical peel can remove the top layer of badly damaged skin while reducing oil and improving the skin’s appearance. These peels are safe and effective for use on teens and young adults. Photomodulation, also known as light treatments, may help as well. Something to keep in mind: Unlike what you may see on TV infomercials, results take time. These commercials do a disservice in that they promote unrealistic expectations. If your acne is severe or not responding to over-the-counter remedies, call board certified dermatologist, Dr. Matthew Doppelt, at Southeastern Dermatology today to schedule your appointment.
