AS I sit on my deck under blue skies with a cool breeze (finally!), Knoxville is still giddy from Saturday’s “big game” where the Vols defeated the Gators. It was so nice to see a full checkerboard stadium! Our daughter, a UT alumni, came to town with friends and was more than thrilled with the win - it hasn’t happened since she was a UT student herself. Her group spent the rest of the day, hopping from one downtown party venue to the next. Knoxville is definitely the right place to be for a celebration!

We feel very fortunate to have linked up with others here in Knoxville that love our Scruffy City and all it has to offer as much as we do! Somewhere.inthe.South’s Lori and Denton, who we have known for more than a decade, have been gracious enough to share their “date night” outings with us. They are always up on all the fun places to grab a beer and a burger. Their son, who just hiked the entire Appalachain Trail from south to north,

KNOX SHOWERS has grown out of a locally founded and award-winning handyman business Smart Home Fix. Both Alex Shelyakov and Eugene Khalezov, his business partner and uncle, came to Knoxville as kids with their parents in search of the quintessential “American Dream.” After college and working in the construction and IT/ supply chain businesses respectively, Alex and Eugene began Smart Home Fix more than 10 years ago. Knox Showers grew out of a customer need they knew they could fill. EK: You seem to have decided that Knoxville is “home.” What led to putting down your roots and starting a business here?

Alex: I actually met my wife here when I was only 14! I had big dreams to move to a big city once I was finished with school - little did I know, Knoxville would be my forever home. We got married right out of college, and I started my own construction company. After several years of business, I had repeat customers asking for us to do smaller jobs around their house. I brainstormed the idea of Smart Home Fix but knew that I didn’t want to go it alone.

Eugene: It really is a family business at heart. Alex and I partnered to create Smart Home Fix. Alex is a people person who likes sales and new opportunities, and I am more of the specific business details aspect end. We make a great team.

EK: With more than 10 years as a successful handyman busi ness, why branch out into bathroom shower installations?

Eugene: In the past couple of years, we noticed that the need for people to update their homes had increased dramatically,

so we decided to pinpoint what homeowners would find to be the most useful in terms of bathroom renovation. The solution became very clear. Bathroom remodels usually take weeks to do properly with craftsmen using tile and grout. Most people are reluctant to begin a project that may require taking consid erable time off work, not to mention dealing with a possibly more than a month’s worth of dust and noise.

Alex: We knew this would be a service many Knoxvillians would appreciate! It took us some time and lots of dedicated research to find the right product, but once we did, we (and our customers) fell in love.

EK: How can Knox Showers be a real asset to any bathroom renovation?

Eugene: We are able to offer a great looking product that is available in a variety of styles, patterns, and colors and that can be installed in days, not weeks.

Alex: The reasons are clear - we put in a great looking shower faster. It will not look like an ordinary fiberglass tub and is also much easier to clean. Our product comes with a lifetime warranty, looks like tile, and has no maintenance in sealing or cleaning grout. It’s a win-win!

EK: After a prospective client calls your office, what happens next?

Alex: We don’t have salespeo ple. Our estimator will come out - in a recognizable ladder-topped Smart Car that made my wife think I was crazy! - to listen

to your wants and needs, do measure ments, and show you the many products we have to offer. He won’t be pushy and won’t pressure you “to sign.”

Eugene: After the client chooses the specific material color and style, adds convenience items like niches for products or safety features such as grab bars or shower seats, the shower is constructed to their specifications. We then come out and install everything in just a few days. And remember, there is honestly a lifetime warranty!

EK: What is next for Knox Showers?

Alex: We are in the process of creating a showroom (opening in November) within our offices in the Hardin Valley area where people will be able to come see and feel the finished product in its many variations. We are excited to be able to show up close and in

person why it is one of the best shower systems on the market.

They’re Both Good!

AS A guy with years of experience interacting with women, you’d think I’d be comfortable with tears.

Tears come for lots of different reasons, but I still feel uneasy when a client starts crying. I have a lot of interactions with clients, and women clients in particular, but I still struggle with exactly how to react.

Years ago, I had a client come in who had really curly hair. (When this story took place, curly hair was “out,” so she was struggling with what to do with her hair.) I introduced her to some great, heat-protection products and flat-ironed her hair. She looked intently in the mirror and said, “I never imagined it could look like this!” and kept petting her hair. She had been to other salons, but nobody had bothered to tell her that this was an option. She couldn’t stop staring at her self and petting her hair. Then the smile broke out… and the waterworks started! (Yay! Happy endings!) And when clients are that excited, it makes me want to cry! (Yeah… I’m a crier!)

Don’t Miss These 2023 Medicare Changes

EXCITING CHANGES are afoot for Medicare in 2023, and I can’t wait to share them with you. If you are one of over 60 million Americans in the Medicare system, there is no denying that the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act will bring predictability to your drug costs:

• Insulin costs will be capped at $35/month beginning in 2023, which will be a sigh of relief to Part D enrollees who spent $1 billion on insulin in 2020, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.

• Annual out-of-pocket prescription costs will be capped at $2,000/year beginning in 2025. Retirees spending many thousands of dollars on expensive drugs will be a thing of the past.

• The U.S. government will be able to nego tiate prescription drug prices on behalf of Medicare recipients beginning in 2026 and ramping up through 2029. More cost-effec tive drugs are on the horizon.

• Lastly, vaccines of all types will be free for Medicare recipients. No more delaying on those pneumonia or shingles vaccines!

Switching gears now to Medicare Advantage plans. Remember that Advantage plans are all-in clusive plans that have low monthly premiums and then you pay a co-pay for care. The two big knocks were high maximum out-of-pockets and limited ability to be covered beyond your local net work. Time to take a fresh look. 2023 Advantage plan coverages will include $2,000 - $3,000 den tal, vision and glasses, hearing aids, and a $200 quarterly payout for OTC pharmacy items. And I’m not done yet: The max out-of-pocket for those co-pays is dropping to $3,200 in 2023 and then down to $2,000 in 2024. No more worrying that a hospital stay could drain your savings. Most importantly, plans are putting into writing that you can see any network provider while traveling in the U.S. and the co-pay will be the same.

WHENANN FIRST walked into our clinic, she had no outward signs of the imminent danger she was facing. I invited her into my office and reviewed her medical history and medications. It immediately caught my attention that she was on three blood pressure medications and reported frequent headaches. I scanned the remainder of her paperwork, and when my eyes fell upon her previous diagnosis of a 90% blockage to her right carotid artery (major artery in your neck), it became evident that time was of the essence. The severity of the situation further heightened when I took her blood pressure, which was 240/126 (120/80 is normal). I confirmed that she had been taking her medications and double checked the reading on her other arm. She was in a hypertensive crisis, and I knew I must work quickly to get her pressure down. She admitted it had been running high but was shocked at how high it was that dayexplaining that she didn’t have a headache or blurry vision, her typical symptoms when she was in the “danger zone.”

Hypertension is notoriously called the silent killer. Values generally have to be extremely high before most people notice, making fre quent monitoring essential. Symptoms of high blood pressure can include blurry vision, headaches, nose bleeds, irregular heartbeat, chest pain, fatigue, and ear buzzing.

After treating her with medication in our clinic, I decided to add two additional medi cines and provided her with a blood pressure cuff to take home. After three days, she sent me a text with her list of blood pressures. Although her blood pressure had gone down, it was still too high. I stopped two of the original medications she had been taking to see if these other medicines were providing any added benefit. Based on her initial blood pressure, I doubted stopping them would even be noticeable. There was no significant change, and I was glad to have two fewer medications in the mix.

During the next few weeks, she continued recording her blood pressure and called to report any that fell outside the parameters we had set. On one occasion, she called after hours with a very high reading, which led to us adding a prescription for her to use on an “as-needed basis” while adjusting her medications. Finally, after several trials and adjustments, with continuous monitoring and close communication, we got her to her blood pressure goal of 130/80 in just over four weeks.

Ann has worked in healthcare for more than 30 years and is familiar with the dangers of high blood pressure. She has frequently witnessed the consequences of untreated hypertension, such as kidney dis ease (resulting in dialysis) and heart disease

(resulting in heart attacks). Aware of her risk, she was proactive, did her due diligence, sought out doctors and specialists, and took multiple medications. Yet, none were able to manage her as closely and aggressively as her condition required. It wasn’t due to the provider’s lack of competence or willing ness to treat Ann, but rather their lack of time. Her confirmed coronary artery dis ease and extremely high blood pressure left her in a volatile space, and it took a personal healthcare advocate to closely follow her to the point that she was safe and out of danger. And it took time.

The timeframe from diagnosis to optimized therapy is one of the leading contributors to our chronic disease burden in our country, and the problem can be traced back to time.

Or rather, the lack thereof. Primary care appointments in 2022 are averaging a mere seven minutes. Doctors barely have time to see their patients, much less call and check up on them after hours. They certainly cannot be expected to treat them aggres sively due to their inability to provide close supervision. Medical insurance require

medication adjustment and monitoring, severely exaggerating the timeframe to res olution. Knowing this, it would likely have been close to 12 months for Ann to reach her goal. Twelve months of silent damage and imminent danger while navigating the system her insurance required.

Tips for a Happy Retirement

EVERYONE

WANTS a happy retirement, and “happy” means different things to different people. Regardless of your aspirations, here are the top three for enjoying what I believe to be a happy retirement.

Retire “TO” something - not FROM something I meet with far too many people just counting the days until they retire from the “daily grind.” While I certainly understand the sentiment, these same individuals often jump right back in the workforce a year later - because they got bored! Or, even worse, they sit at home lonely and disconnected since their identity and circle of friends was entirely wrapped in their former workspace. In my experience, someone who is a new chapter of life filled with family, hobbies, and acts of service enjoys a smoother transition from the workforce and enjoys retire ment exponentially more.

Don’t Penny-Pinch

Don’t get me wrong - a budget is still import ant, and spending above one’s means over an extended period is a bad idea! But simple plea sures like a cup of coffee or tickets to the local ball game should always be within reach. Retirement is a time to enjoy life and “master the middle ground” of spending. Big trips and expenditures must be planned out carefully, but everyday plea sures should not be a daily question mark.

Take Your Health Seriously

In my experience, the happiest retirees are also among the healthiest. It’s more difficult to enjoy the simple pleasures in life when you’re in chronic pain or a frequent flyer at the hospital, right? Simple steps such as regular exercise and healthy food choices are just as important as choosing the proper investments in your IRA account.

WHAT IS peripheral neuropathy?

Peripheral Neuropathy is a condition where the small nerves, usually in the toes and feet, stop working prop erly. Most people feel burning, tingling, or numbness in their feet, which may cause them to fall.

What causes this condition?

There are three broad categories that cause peripheral neuropa thy. The first and most common is diabetes. Another potential cause may be autoimmune conditions where the body starts attacking its own tissues. The third broad category can be labeled environmen tal, which includes things like certain medications, chemotherapy, or excessive use of alcohol that can damage these small nerves.

How does diabetes cause neuropathy?

All of the tissues in our body rely on blood for nutrients so they can be repaired. Let’s imagine that blood is the consistency of water for this example. In a person with diabetes, their blood will be more like the consistency of syrup due to the higher sugar content. This type of blood cannot easily flow through the small blood vessels that feed the nerves in their toes and feet. Eventually the nerves will start to degenerate and they lose the ability to feel their feet.

What are common treatments for peripheral neuropathy?

The most common treatments are medications. For many people, medications do not work very well to control their symptoms and create additional uncomfortable side effects.

Are there other options for people with this condition?

AS SUMMER comes to an end, autumn hues begin to cover the stunning rolling ridges of the Great Smoky Mountains. They begin in the higher elevations and slowly make their way to the base of mountains for one last hurrah, just before the hills fall into a deep slumber until the buds of spring appear the following year. In this month’s feature, I’ve put together a few different autumn adventure ideas for you. Seize the season and do them all, mix & match, or pick your favorite and enjoy the most beautiful time of the year in the Smokies.

Scenic Drives, Shopping, and Solitude

Mountain Lodge Gatlinburg is a locally owned vacation home that is a perfect balance of rustic and luxury. Are you a lover of wine? The Gatlinburg Garden Club Wine Fest returns on October 15th. If you can’t make it to the festival, plan on doing the Gatlinburg Wine Trail, mak ing time to stop in Tennessee Homemade Wines. The winery keeps a solid 5-star set of reviews on TripAdvisor and was voted Tennessee’s Best Winery by Yelp in 2022. You’ll also find sips of the season being served up in the form of hot mulled cider at their sister business, Tennessee Cider Company. If you find yourself tired from the hustle and bustle of the day, treat yourself to dinner with a view at Anakeesta or at my personal favorite culinary spot in Gatlinburg, The Greenbrier.

Camping, Cammerer, and Coffee

Are you more interested in a dose of sol itude with a deeper connection to nature? Then a camping trip is what you need! Visit the national park website, book a camp site in the Cosby Campground, pack up your camping and hiking gear, and escape to one of the most peaceful corners of the Smokies. From the campground, you can explore the nature trail, hike out to Hen Wallow Falls, or take on the challenge of hiking to Mount Cammerer.

During your time in Cosby, I highly recom mend stopping off at Our Place Books, having a cup of freshly brewed coffee, and getting lost in the abundance of books that they have in stock. You’ll find books about the Smokies, Gatlinburg, and other nearby areas that you often can’t find anywhere else.

Another great stop for the season is Carver’s Orchard & Applehouse Restaurant. I know I can’t imagine a more picture per fect setting for the season. Or wait, can I? Of course I can! Next up…

This next destination will take you over the hills and through the woods to the North Carolina side of the Smoky Mountains. Clean an Epoxy Garage Floor in 3 Easy Steps

IF YOU already have a PremierGarage durable floor in your garage, you’ve taken an important step in having a cleaner, more attractive home.

PremierGarage floor coatings are popular for their durability, slip- and stain-resis tant properties, as well as ease of cleaning. Learning how to care for and clean a garage floor will ensure long-term function and satisfaction with your floor.

Step 1: Clear the Floor of Loose Debris

Remove anything that is sitting on the garage floor so the entire floor is exposed. Sweep or shop vac the floor to remove dirt, sand, and other debris. Make sure to clean under cabinets, work benches, and appli ances. In preparation for step two, place small plastic baggies over the garage infra red door sensors to they don’t get wet.

Step 2: Clean the Floor

The best way to clean the floor is by using a mop. A heavy-duty cotton mop is recom mended, and a rolling bucket will make the task easier sine you’ll want to rinse the mop as you go section by section. Take extra care as you work, since enough water on any floor will make it slippery.

Cleaning solutions that will clean while protecting the finish include ammonia.

Just mix five ounces of clear ammonia per gallon of water. Also, a diluted solution of a degreaser like Simple Green mixed with one-half cup per gallon of water cleans well.

Step 3: Rinse and Dry

Use a hose and spray nozzle to rinse the floor. Your garage floor will have a natural slope from the back of the garage to the driveway, so start at the highest point at the back to spray and rinse. Be careful under cabinets to limit splashing water onto wood

components. Hose the back and sides of the floor to the middle, and then out the door. To quickly dry the floor and ensure no standing puddles of water remain, use a floor squeegee ( 18 or 24 inches to speed things up) or a clean street broom to move any water out of the garage, using the same back-and-sides-to-middle routine. Remove the plastic baggies from the garage door sensors and you’re done!

BABY BOOMERS who were even just passively listening to music back in their youth will remember songs like “Free Ride” and the monster (pun intended) hit “Frankenstein.”

For any artist to enjoy two huge hits would be the dream of their lifetime. Those two songs fulfilled such a dream for Edgar Winter via his band at that time, The Edgar Winter Group (featuring the late, great Ronnie Montrose on guitar). And while those two songs have secured solid spots on the soundtrack of baby boomers' youth, there is much more to Edgar Winter.

Edgar is the younger brother of the late blues great Johnny Winter. Both boys were born with albinism. The odds that two children would be born with albinism to the same parents at the time were allegedly a million to one. Being albino in the rough and tumble town of Beaumont, Texas, created an inseparable bond between them. In addition to finding solace in each other as brothers and friends, they also found a refuge in music. Johnny became passion ate about learning the guitar, and Edgar became proficient playing various instruments and in reading and writing music.

After the aforementioned hits (featured on the band’s acclaimed debut album They Only Come Out At Night), the group released a second album titled Shock Treatment, featuring the founder of The McCoys (“Hang On Sloopy”) and guitarist Rick Derringer, who later recorded “Rock and Roll Hootchie Koo” and “Still Alive and Well.” That began a lifelong friendship between Rick and the Winter brothers that lasted until Johnny’s passing and to this day with Edgar. It is through that friendship, and my early interview with Rick, that I was introduced to the Winter brothers (first to Edgar and later to Johnny).

Sadly, Johnny passed away eight years ago while on tour near Zurich, Switzerland, from what is felt to have been emphysema and pneumonia. There was immediate pressure placed on Edgar to put out an album to commemorate his brother’s life and career. Edgar had resisted that pressure until recently.

The album is appropriately titled Brother Johnny, wherein Edgar is joined by such amazing artists as Billy Gibbons, Michael McDonald, Derek Trucks, Keb Mo’, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Joe Bonamassa, Joe Walsh, Ringo Starr, Steve Lukather, and several others. It was about that album that I connected with Edgar via Zoom. He shared the backstory about what led up to him recording the album so many years after his big brother’s passing.

“Shortly after Johnny’s passing, I was approached by several peo ple with the idea of doing a tribute, and it just didn’t feel right,” he said. “It just felt like an exploitation of his name used to sell records for other purposes than what I intended, and that was not something that I wanted to be a part of. But as years went by and I started to play more shows, it became really evident to me that it

was Johnny’s true and loyal fans that really wanted this to happen.

“I asked my wife, Monique, about it. Monique and I have been married now for 43 years. I trust her intuition more than my ana lytical thinking in many cases. She said, ‘Well, you’re always talking about how Johnny’s your all-time musical hero, and you wouldn’t be where you are were it not for him.’”

Once Edgar decided that the time - and reason - was right for a tribute album, he began the process of determining which songs should be recorded for it.

“The first question in my mind was should I just do a straight-ahead blues record in honor of Johnny’s memory and the legacy he left behind? Or should it be more of a personal tribute from me to my brother, based on a lot of my own particular musical preferences?

“I decided that it should be a balance of both. There are some obscure songs on there. Obviously, ‘Rock and Roll Hoochie Coo,’ ‘Alive and Well’ - songs that everybody knows and loves. And then there are a lot of songs that Johnny popularized like ‘Jumping Jack Flash’ and ‘Highway 61’ that were not songs that he wrote. I expected that it might be a difficult album to make. I knew it was going to wind up as being highly emotional and stir up a lot of mem ories. But it really turned out to be a joyous experience beyond my expectations... but it was very cathartic.”

The interview is quite extensive with a lot of territory covered, including Edgar and Johnny’s performance at the original Woodstock and Edgar currently performing as part of Ringo’s All Starr Band. This exhibition features random portraitures of several ongoing series by Hei Park who was born in Inchon, South Korea. It also displays images from the documentary Cycle of Life by Richard Jolley, revealing the behind-the-scenes process of making massive glasswork over five years.

Artist statement excerpts: America is my adopted home. Making photographs of people provides me an opportunity to reach out to establish connections with strangers - maybe even relationshipsbased not on inherited genetics, but rather on trust. Photographic portraiture is my passion. A successful portrait induces an involvement. My current work is on exploration of the possibilities of creating prolonged vision by placing the figure against a rear projected image creating a correlative combination. AIA East Tennessee | [Knoxville] By Design: Art Salon 2022 in the Upper Gallery

[Knoxville] By Design, part of National Architecture Week, is a month long annual celebration of architecture and design in our community. A staple event since [Knoxville] By Design began, the Art Salon celebrates and showcases the vast range of original works of art created by architects, designers, emerging professionals, students, and allied professionals in the East Tennessee Region. That means anyone engaged in shaping the built environment (or shaping the minds and conversations that shape the built environment). From woven textiles and ceramics to oil paintings and hand-made musical instruments, the Art Salon highlights the diverse talents of creative professionals in that field.

Four Dames, Four Seasons in the Atrium

When four women of diverse backgrounds, interests, and tastes come together out of their mutual appreciation and admiration for artistic expression, the results are lively and fascinating. The variation in color, texture, and ideas encourages repeated viewing of this new exhibition by Linda Blair, Cheryl Massey, Leesa Osburn,

and Marcia Shelly. Through acrylic, oil, and watercolor, each “dame” has been free to explore, enjoy, and express each of the four seasons in her own way.

Linda Blair : Watercolors are my first painting choice - the colors blend from quiet to joyful. Cheryl Massey : I adore works that pop with bold strokes of colorful imagination, and drawing and painting in a variety of media fuels my creative spirit. Leesa Osburn : I am always looking for a subject that is intriguing in a new way to me, whether is the subject matter or the atmospheric conditions. Marcia Shelly: I am drawn to the way light touches an object and how it changes the object’s base color.

Casey Field: Our Quiet Attention on the North Wall

This collection of oil paintings and drawings created in 2022 represents self-exploration and contemplation of the creative path. Field includes the use of personal stories, the feminine as sacred, and the portrait as a portal to the universal. She creates art in the subgenre of contemporary classical figurative art.

The title of this collection of artwork comes from the idea that an intentional devotion to any pursuit - artistic or otherwise - requires a certain amount of thoughtful dedication.

Vazeen’s Expressions in the Display Case

Jon “Rooz” Vazeen loves to connect with people and organizations that have an interest in creating structures in much larger dimensions. Excerpts from the artist’s statement: I got bumped into the art world by accident, and being able to express myself through art has been a superb experience.

Because of my interest in technology and science, the use of technology as a tool of creation has been a dominant component of my work. The driving force is the desire to experiment; I consider all my work as ongoing experiments. While people are normally attracted to the structure’s appearance, structures may also be an art of engineering when observed from a technical viewpoint.

UT Gardens’ Plant of the Month Grow Sweet Potatoes for Fun, Beauty, and Great Nutrition

DELICIOUS, NUTRITIOUS, and easy to grow, sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas) are a good choice for Tennessee gardeners with a sunny space and the desire to “grow your own.”

The long, humid days of summer in the Southeast are perfect for this vigorously vining root crop that features edible leaves and charming funnel-shaped flowers that come in shades of pink and purple.

Sweet potatoes grow so well in Tennessee, in fact, that Weakley County in West Tennessee is central to the crop’s produc tion across the United States. In the 1950s and ’60s, five companies in the county pro duced more than 10 million sweet potato slips. Slips are the rooted cuttings from which sweet potatoes are generally grown. Today, while only the Steele Plant Company remains, this family-owned and operated company shipped more than three million slips this year to locations throughout the continental U.S. Another fun fact to know is the town of Gleason, Tennessee, is known as Tater Town and annually hosts a festival called the Tater Town Special each year on Labor Day weekend.

So how do you produce taters of your own? Whether you purchase them from a local grower, get them from your neighbor, or order them online, the ideal planting time

is between May and June, which allows for a 3-5 month growing period before cool weather sets in. Slips planted later in the season may still produce, but the yield will be smaller. Plants that are put in the ground too early may suffer from cool soil tempera tures. While no special soil preparation is required in the average garden, the tubers will be larger and more perfectly shaped if the soil is deep and well drained with a moderate level of fertility. Side dress with a general all-purpose fertilizer about a month after planting if desired.

Harvest at the end of the growing season before the first deep frost by cutting back the vines and lifting the roots out of the ground with a small shovel, potato fork, or your hands. At the UT Gardens, Knoxville, we do our best to find children to help with this part. Harvesting the sweet potato patch is like digging for gold! Kids love it. Once all the tuberous roots have been found, it’s important to start the curing process. This is a process that increases the sugar content and gives the sweet potatoes a longer storage life. After brushing off most of the soil, store them in a dark area at 80-85º and 90% humidity for about a week. After this they should be stored in a low humidity area between 50-60º.

There are thousands of different kinds of sweet potatoes from which to choose. Common varieties like ‘Beauregard’ and ‘Jewel’ will grow rapidly, sending vines out as long as 16 feet in one season. If space is an issue, try growing them up a trellis, reg ularly trim back the vines to keep the plants in check, or choose a bush variety such as ‘Vardaman’. Treasure Island is a new series commercially available from Burpee that includes three varieties with deep purple or chartreuse leaves. We are experimenting with the purple-leaved ‘Manihi’ at the UT Gardens, Knoxville this summer with great success so far. You can see them growing outside the Kitchen Garden.

The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Crossville, and Jackson. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The Gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public.

IAM WRITING about October in the middle of September, and it is still hot.

We do, however, have the occasional nice, cool day thrown in so we don’t lose all hope. I’m ready for a real fall. For days in the 70s and nights in the 50s and pumpkins and pansies and mums. How about you?

Let’s talk about fall planting first. This is typically the best time to plant trees and shrubs, because fall and winter is when the vast majority of root growth occurs. That means that any trees and shrubs planted between now through the end of December have a head start on those planted next spring. There are a few things you need to know about fall gardening, however.

☼ October is typically our driest month. This means that you’re going to HAVE to water well. Sprinklers are inadequate for trees and shrubs because you need to get water 12" into the soil at least once a week. (As a guideline, I plan on 5 gal lons on smaller shrubs, 10 on trees and large shrubs.) You can’t do that with a sprinkler! Hand water or use a drip line.

Some of your plants probably don’t look great. This doesn’t mean they are dead or dying. We had a lot of diseases and insects this year, so spotty, holey leaves are more common than nice green ones right now. Some trees have already defoliated. Some plants are leggy and overgrown. When we have one of those glorious cool days, I suggest you go out and do a little work. Pull weeds, trim overgrown plants (call us if you don’t know what to prune), apply an organic fertilizer, and fluff up your mulch.

☼ You can plant other things besides trees and shrubs, but you need to do it soon. Most perennials and veggies need to get roots going before we have a frost, and our average first frost is October 23rd. Let’s discuss fall color. You know the obvi ous tree choices (maple, gingko, dogwoods, crepe myrtles), so let’s talk about shrubs. Camellias are one of my favorites, and we just got a new load, so let’s start there. The Camellia sasanqua is a fall bloomer and tends to be a little less temperamen tal than the japonica, which blooms in the spring. The blooms will last for several weeks. Camellias prefer morning sun, after noon shade, and acidic soil. There is a new line from Southern Living that stays a bit smaller, so the size range is 4' to 20'. Most bloom white, pink, or red. A few have varie gated blooms. They are all beautiful.

I also love oakleaf hydrangeas, which turn a deep burgundy in the fall. Even after the leaves drop, the shape and bark are lovely.

Burning bush, Virginia sweetspire, cotoneas ter, and blueberries also turn red. For yellow shades, try clethra, forsythia, or witch hazel.

What if you’re looking for berries?

Beautyberry is my favorite, but don’t for get viburnums, cotoneaster, chokeberry, and hollies. Mahonia also has a good berry set in the fall and winter.

There are also some perennials that either bloom in the fall or keep their foli age. Anemones, Joe Pye weed, sedums, and turtlehead bloom now. In addition, many of the summer bloomers such as coreop sis, coneflowers, black-eyed Susan, and Russian Sage often put on a new flush as temperatures cool. Don’t forget the peren nials that are evergreen! Dianthus, some sedums, Lenten rose, heuchera, and candy tuft are just a few that stick around for the winter months. Grasses also add color and movement through the cold months.

As for annuals, you can’t beat a pansy for color. Plant them now, and they will last until next May! They do well in the ground and in containers, so stop by while the selection is good.

I will finish by reminding you that there are a few chores that need to be done in the fall:

Clean up your flower beds. Cut back fading perennials, and clean up debris.

You can leave plants that provide seeds

ҋ

for the birds, but get diseased leaves up.

If you didn’t have any fungal problems, run over fallen leaves with your mower and then add them to your bed. They make wonderful compost!

Pull any weeds, then apply a pre-emer gent to keep them from coming back.

Keep harvesting cool season veggies and herbs along with any pumpkins, squash, and gourds that are still on the vine.

Mulch bare areas to help keep the weed population down and the temperature and water levels stable.

Don’t forget the birds! Keep those feed ers clean and full. If you have a birdbath that can remain outside, keep it clean and full also. Otherwise, clean it and store it for the winter.

The Classic Southern Casserole

Cheesy Squash Casserole

Ingredients:

• 2 1/2 cups yellow squash (4-5 medium squash)

• 1 chopped onion

• 2 eggs, beaten

• 2 tablespoons butter, softened

• 1 can cream of celery soup

• 1 cup Cooks on the Curb Classic Pimento Cheese

• 3/4 cups herb flavored stuffing, divided

Directions:

Slice squash, place in large pot and cover with water. Cook on medium heat for 12 minutes. Drain well in a strainer.

Preheat oven to 375°. Combine onion, eggs, butter, soup, pimento cheese, and 1/4 cup of stuffing. After mixing well, add the cooked squash and stir to com bine. Spread mixture into a greased casserole dish. Top with remaining stuffing. Bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown and bubbly. Let cool 15 minutes before serving.

Can easily be doubled to feed a crowd!

The Early Bird Gets the Roll

THE WORDS “House Special” might evoke grandiose visions of heaping, hot plates like gumbo with okra, grilled pimento cheese, or signature BBQ sandwiches. However, it was indeed an unexpected dish that prompted me to find myself in the parking lot of Scrambled Jake’s Breakfast Co. on Northshore Drive 15 minutes before they opened. Saturday morn ings are, in my book, for epic adventures, or sleeping in, and as I headed toward Rocky Hill at 6:30 in the morn ing, I hoped giving up one would get me the other.

My best friend and I were, in fact, the first customers to be seated that morn ing. For all those who love their sleep as much as I do, I’m happy to report that while patrons of all ages trickled in throughout

the morning, the hostess informed us that the crowd would peak at 10.

We weren’t just up to beat the crowd, though. We were trying to finally get a taste of that famous special.

The signature stiff cardstock menu pre sented breakfast staples like eggs benedict and waffles alongside southern favorites like grits and biscuits and gravy. But one thing held prominent space right below the appetizers in a category all to itself, empha sizing its uniqueness to Jake’s.

The words “cinnamon roll” might summon less extravagant images or flavors, simple memories of Pillsbury cans or flaky but cold Panera pastries with not nearly enough icing to moisten the dough or sweeten the roll.

That is nothing like the pound of pastry that arrived at my table.

Scrambled Jake’s fresh spiral of gooey hot dough was drowning in waves of cream cheese icing. Thank goodness we had ordered one to split. As we loaded the other half of the roll - what would be christened “second breakfast” - into our to-go boxes, I took a moment to notice the spiraled lay ers of pastry. The icing had been so thick

on top that it was impossible to tell, but when the roll is flipped over, it more closely resembles an ancient redwood tree than a pastry. Layer after layer speaks to the time, care, and skill put in to making several hun dred of them every morning.

Of course, bread and sugar aren’t a com plete breakfast, and we supplemented our stunning pastry centerpiece with eggs, grits, potato casserole, and gouda sausage links. The creamy, cheese-infused pork sau sage is unarguably my repeat order.

We emerged from the relaxing dining room decorated with exposed brick walls, hanging plants, and a mural of downtown Knoxville. Fully sated - but unsure whether to embark on another adventure or take a nap - it was easy to see why the small cus tomizable billboard sitting in the corner of their parking lot read “Voted Best Breakfast in Knoxville.”

THE KNOX COUNTY COURTHOUSE A Brief History

THE KNOX COUNTY Courthouse, located on Main Street in downtown Knoxville, was built in 1885 and served as our county’s courthouse until the completion of the City County Building in 1980. The courthouse sits on Lot 36 of the original 1791 plat of the town of Knoxville. This lot is directly across the street from the courthouse location set aside by Knoxville founder, James White (1747-1821). The first three courthouses were built on that site in 1793, 1797, and 1842.

In 1883, Knox County government decided to replace the 1842 courthouse with a more modern building and purchased the land directly across the street - location of the 1793 government block house that was built by the United States Army to protect the town from Indian attacks - for $26,000. Construction of the fourth and current courthouse began in 1884 and was completed in 1885 at a cost of $82,000. The original building (the central section) was built by Knoxville building contracting company, Stephenson and Getaz. The design was based on an architectural plan from New York firm, Palliser, Palliser & Company, who were best known for their mail-order plans for residential homes. The 2.5-story brick building with its imposing clock tower contains a mixture of architectural styles that includes Queen Anne Revival, Colonial Revival, and Gothic Revival.

Until the early 20th century, most Knoxvillians lived and worked downtown or in the surrounding neighborhoods. By this time, the courthouse was too small to house the expanding county gov ernment. To address this overcrowding, in 1919, a 3-story wing designed by local architectural firm Baumann and Baumann was added to each corner of the 1885 building. In an effort to main tain the character of the original design, the exterior architectural elements were closely matched in the additions, and the new

structures increased the space by 50%.

On the courthouse lawn are several monuments, including those which mark the graves of Tennessee’s first Governor John Sevier (1745-1815) and his second wife, Katherine (Bonny Kate). Sevier served as Governor of Tennessee from 1796 until 1801 and then again from 1803 until 1809. He died in 1815 while on a presidential mission to Alabama and was buried there near Fort Decatur. In 1897, the body was brought back to Knoxville and reburied at the base of an obelisk - a reported 10,000 people attended the service. Sevier’s first wife, Sarah (Sadie) Hawkins, died in 1780, and a monument to her memory was placed beside the grave marker of Sevier and was dedicated on June 2, 1946, the 200th anniversary of her birth.

There is also a marble arched monument, built in the 1910s, at the corner of Gay Street and Main Street that honors the mem ory of Dr. John Mason Boyd, “Our Beloved Physician.” Boyd (1833-1909) was a well-known doctor, surgeon, and civic leader. Additional monuments on the lawn commemorate the signing of the 1791 Treaty of the Holston and one to honor veterans of the Spanish American War.

On the 100th anniversary of the construction of the courthouse, a complete exterior and interior restoration took place from 1985 until 1990, which included the restoration of the original Seth Thomas Clock Company clock and the 4,500-pound clock bell.

Today, the old courthouse still hosts some court functions and is home to a variety of Knox County Clerk offices.

Knox Heritage preserves structures and places of historic or cultural significance for our community. Established in 1974 as a non-profit educational corporation, our organization works to protect and raise awareness of what is beautiful and irreplaceable in East Tennessee.

THINGS TO DO PLACES TO GO PEOPLE TO SEE

IN 2017, when the Henrys moved to Tennessee from North Carolina, they were sure to include a few convenient roll-out drawers in the kitchen cabinets of their house when it was being built. They quickly became aware that the limited number of roll-out shelves actually made it more difficult to access the items in the deep lower section of their cabinets. Mentors: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

ECENTLY, WE’VE spent time with younger folks who are early in their careers. The benefits of mentor guidance in their “adult” jobs came up. Recalling a few of my own experiences, two significant but very different outcomes came to mind…

One of my first bosses (who actually fired me once!) did a great service by challenging me to meet raised expectations, and when I was not taking my responsibilities seriously (a rebellious teen at this point), let me go from his employ ment. At the time, I was hurt, angry, insulted, and a bit panicked without a job. In retrospect, it was a well deserved and a necessary lesson I needed to learn.

This was not a coaching or mentoring role, just a blue-collar business owner working 12-hour days with plenty of daily challenges. While being tough and having high expectations, he cared. At that age, I had no idea of the benefit or learning that was taking place, but I was being coached daily. Decades later, the lessons still resonate and mean a great deal.

Another example happened 20 years later. I was in management of a small company. The owner (another good mentor) sold to an inves tor group, and I then reported to a new CEO. This individual came from a national retail

background, was well respected, and an active leader in the community. All was generally okay until accounting entries were changed to affect financial reports in order to look good for board meetings. I expressed concern and was met with the explanation that this was a “common prac tice” and we would correct it later.

This CEO prided himself as a “mentor” of young executives, and although I did learn a bit about relevant business matters, there were some hard lessons and disappointments involving trust, ethics, and major decisions that affected our operations and financial position. Over time, the differences of our “operating phi losophy” were magnified, and after a battling for several years, I chose to step out.

My reason for sharing these experiences is to underscore the importance and responsibility placed on those in positions of mentoring and influencing others - whether in a formal role or as a coach, manager, co-worker, or trusted fam ily friend. The words and actions demonstrated can be so much more significant than we realize, and the impact - positive or negative - can have long term influence. Mentoring is a privilege and very important role to fill in the lives of others. There is a tremendous amount of good wisdom out there - and it needs to be shared!
