EK: Lance, can you tell us a little about the Tennova Heart Institute at Turkey Creek? How many physicians and other medical professionals make up the Institute?

Lance: Turkey Creek Medical Center offers a complete range of cardiac services, including open heart surgery. Most of our cardiologists are with East Tennessee Heart Consultants, the same physicians who were part of the nationally recognized Baptist Heart Institute. Most recently two additional cardiologists with more than 60 years combined experience joined the team, with one having served as a former co-founder of an award-winning cardiac program. EK: Dr. Foster, let’s talk about the Parachute IV trial and, more specifically, your patient, 47-year-old Gregg Fruchtnicht.

Dr. Foster: Mr. Fruchtnicht came to us with the classic symptoms of congestive heart failure – shortness of breath, fatigue, and a rapid heartbeat. He could barely walk up stairs or even across the room. We determined he was an excellent candidate for the Parachute, a device inserted through a
catheter into the heart. The parachuteshaped device is deployed and allows remodeling of the enlarged heart muscle into a healthy shape, thus improving its function. You can see today that Mr. Fruchtnicht’s quality of life has changed significantly for the better. EK: You described the Parachute device as “elegantly simple.” Why? Dr. Foster: The Parachute device has a very simple design with a frame of hooks and wires and an umbrella-like barrier that protects the damaged heart muscle from pressure and strain. inserted using a small catheter with no incision. EK: Where is the Parachute IV in trials, and who is a candidate for this device? Dr. Foster: Parachute IV is a Phase 2 Clinical trial, enrolling up to 475 patients with apical LV dysfunction, an LV Ejection Fraction of <35%, and Class III-IV symptoms of heart failure. EK: Mr. Fruchtnicht described his almost instantaneous feeling of enhanced vitality in recovery almost immediately after the procedure was performed. You’ve described how you are often able to observe a patient’s improved well-being even while a cardiac procedure is being performed. This must be gratifying. Dr. Foster: Absolutely. In the Catheterization Lab, we see people get better right before our eyes. It’s truly gratifying! EK: Lance, how important is the Tennova Heart Institute to patients living in the Farragut, West Knox, and surrounding areas? Lance: To know this level of cardiac care and research is available right here in the Turkey Creek area is amazing. Patients do not have to travel anywhere else to get heart care on par with some of the biggest cardiac programs in the
country. We are so fortunate to have this group of physicians serving our campus. EK: Dr. Foster, what other advances are taking place at Turkey Creek’s Tennova Heart Institute amongst your colleagues? Dr. Foster: We have a very close relationship with Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel. Our Emergency Department has instituted the ER Extra Program. Nursing and Cardiac Rehabilitation promote outstanding care and recovery. Many of our patients remain with us for long-term wellness programs. EK: In closing, do you have anything further you would like to tell our readers? Dr. Foster: Turkey Creek Medical Center is a very special place. “Elegantly Simple” Those are the words used by Turkey Creek Medical Center Cardiologist and Clinical Research Director, Malcolm Foster, MD, to describe the revolutionary new medical device used by his team in a landmark, first-of-its-kind treatment for heart failure here in the United States.
he trial procedure ,
performed for the first time in Tennessee on February 6th at Turkey Creek Medical Center and only the third time in the nation, involved implanting a device referred to as the “Parachute” into the heart of 47-year-old Gregg Fruchtnicht of Sevierville, Tennessee. The procedure gained even more national attention after being featured on the ABC drama Grey’s Anatomy. Gregg suffered with congestive heart failure (CHF) after years of damage to the heart muscle from multiple heart attacks. He had his first heart attack in 2005, followed by another in 2007, which led to five heart bypasses. However, damage had been done to his heart, and he developed continuing side effects from CHF – shortness of breath, fatigue, and a rapid heartbeat. “Inserted through a catheter into the heart, the Parachute device is deployed and allows remodeling of the enlarged heart muscle into a healthy shape, thus improving its function,” said Dr. Foster. “Gregg did extremely well, and he expressed an improvement in his ability to breathe just days after the procedure.” “I can climb stairs now without becoming completely winded – something I could not do before this procedure,” said Gregg. “It’s gratifying to be a part of something that may become a standard treatment for others like me.” After a heart attack, many heart failure patients experience enlargement of their left ventricle, causing a decrease in cardiac output, resulting in heart failure symptoms such as shortness of breath. Treatment options for patients whose ventricle has enlarged are limited. The Parachute device offers the first minimally invasive catheter-based treatment to partition the damaged muscle, excluding the 10

Two rooms inside Biltmore House – the Second Floor Living Hall and the Salon – re-open this fall after the estate’s Museum Services team restores them to their appearances as they were when George Vanderbilt opened the home in 1895. To bring the rooms back to their original states, the team has spent the summer conserving all the furnishings, recreating elaborate window treatments, and making structural changes. As appropriate for such a grand space, several notable paintings were returned to their original locations in the Hall. John Singer Sargent’s portraits of Richard Morris Hunt and Frederick Law Olmsted and Anders Zorn’s painting “The Waltz,” which have been hanging temporarily in the Salon, will once again hang where George Vanderbilt intended. The restored room reopened September 1. Relocating the paintings from the Salon has led to its reinterpretation. Curators decided to tell the story of how the room has changed through the years. Removal of a wall revealed an original firebox and brick walls. A section of the fabric ceiling treatment is being removed to show the terra cotta tiled ceiling above. Information panels will explain the new interpretation of the room when it re-opens Oct. 1.

Guide in a Continuously Shifting Culture Draw Bigger Circles, Take Risks, Love Wildly, Share Generously, and Embrace Opportunity
hree years. 1,095 days. That’s how long I’ve been the Senior Pastor at Central Baptist Bearden, and I’m overwhelmed by two emotions: humility and pride. Humility because I’m so appreciative they called and trusted me to be their friend, teacher, preacher, family member, and fellow traveler on such an important journey. Pride, dangerous as that emotion is, because of this congregation’s overwhelming capacity to draw bigger circles, take risks, love wildly, share generously, and embrace opportunity. For three years we have explored our congregation’s mission to “Know” Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, to “Grow” as his disciples, and “Share” his love in word and deed. The church scene has shifted dramatically in the 21st century, and we assume that such changes will continue. Although some see such transitions as polarizing and divisive, we choose to see them as incredible opportunities. I am often asked what I envision happening in the future. I think these three emphases should be our guide in a continuously shifting culture. 1. Unity and Diversity
We are a both/and kind of church, and that makes us unique, unusual, and, I think, quite Christian. I say yes to discussing, debating, talking, and learning from each other, and I say no to arguing, hating, vilifying, or demeaning each other – especially when we disagree. I say yes to prioritizing our mission and purpose for existence, and I say no to allowing secondary issues, beliefs, or convictions to sidetrack us. I say yes to the continuing support of our roots and traditions, but I say no to allowing politics, religious or secular, denominational or para-church, to divide us. I say yes to a church that embraces the willingness of early Christians to cross 14
EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE October 2013
ethnic, economic, social, cultural, and political barriers, but I say no to a church that looks too much alike, sounds too much alike, and does not reflect God’s wide creation. I say yes to a community of faith united by love for Christ, committed to a lifestyle of service, and motivated by joy and hope, but I say no to a church energized by strife,
stubbornness, self-centeredness, and a future that’s always looking backwards, longing for what was rather than the what-can-be. I say yes to a church that moves with caution, prayer, and is always in step with its core values, but I say no to a church whose inactivity or fear of change resigns it to irrelevance, impotent to engage in its mission and left only with stories of once-filled halls and once-sung songs of praise.
2. Inward Care and Outward Dare Dr. Wade Bibb, Senior Pastor of Central Bearden
Opportunities require careful, constant, coarse corrections, or we will fail our mission. We must care for and nurture those who come to this place even as we find new, creative, meaningful avenues to reach those who will never walk through those doors. The biblical images of the Church as the body of Christ and the people of God embrace both our need and opportunity for “inward care and outward dare.” I say yes to a church that cares deeply for those who join our fellowship and our journey with God, but I say no to a church that will not sacrificially engage its community. I say yes to a church that educates its members and helps them process their inward faith with outward experiences, and I say no to a church that will not seek creative means to improve the lives of those whom they pass each Sunday as they drive to worship. I say yes to putting the needs of others first, ranging from the basic needs for life, the desire for love and encouragement, and the need for worship, but I say no to defining the church, worship, or meaningful Bible study by my preferences, my background, my likes and dislikes, or my prejudices. I say yes to lives characterized by prayer,

meditation, and quietness in a world that continues to spin beyond our ability to control, but I say no to a spirituality that denies the needs of others, ignores the homeless and hungry, or hides behind comfortable piety.
3. Savior and Servant
We know that while Millennials, people born in the 1980s to early 2000s, “like” Jesus, they do not care for the church. They are suspicious of institutions that are too focused on its own life and future and too concerned about status quo instead of a willingness to engage in open discussion and frank dialogue. The church does not exist for us or for itself. The church exists for the Kingdom of God and to bless others. We must share in word and deed, near and far, with those like us and those unlike us. Anything else is failure. I say yes to
a church that takes Jesus’ words and Jesus’ life seriously, valuing others over self, love over hate, service over power, and peace over conflict. I say no to a church that puts its needs before the needs of its neighbors, its institutional struggles over its mission, and its fear of failure over the possibilities for transformation. I say yes to a budget and servants seeking to respond to needs we have overlooked, individuals we have forgotten, and those whom the world is reluctant to acknowledge. I say no to a budget and servants seeking only to serve ourselves, please our desires, and honor those who are already like us and may not really need us. I say yes to a church that is generous in word and deed, bringing good news to broken lives, and I say no to programs that separate the spiritual needs of people from their holistic self, a separation Jesus was unwilling to recognize in his life or in his death. I say yes to a church that embraces the tension of individual responsibility and the corporate life of community, but I say no to a church that
abandons those who make mistakes, who flounder in their humanity, or have trouble trusting when they have been hurt so deeply. Such authenticity requires effort, determination, and intentionality by all of us. I’m convinced, however, that it’s worth the struggle. Who knows what can happen in the next 1,095 days. We welcome you to Central Bearden. You will be surprised at what you find.

The Two Biggest Retirement Misconceptions Presented by Ali Swofford
While the idea of retirement has changed, certain financial assumptions haven’t. We’ve heard about the “new retirement” – the mix of work and play that many of us feel we’ll have in our lives one day. While this is becoming a cultural assumption, it’s interesting that certain financial assumptions haven’t really changed with the times. In particular, there are two financial misconceptions that could prove financially harmful for baby boomers future.
1. Assuming retirement will last 10-15 years. Today, a quarter of the people
reaching 65 will live beyond 90, and 10% will live another five years or more.1 However, some of us may live much longer. The Census Bureau counted 53,364 centurions in 2010, and the numbers are growing.2 If you have good health insurance and access to excellent health care, you may live even longer. Many people don’t realize how much retirement money they may need. 2. Assuming too little risk. Our appetite for risk declines as we get older, and rightfully so. Yet there may be a danger in becoming too risk-averse. Holding onto your retirement money is certainly important; so is your retirement income and quality of life. There are three financial issues that can affect both: taxes, health care costs, and inflation. Over time, even 3-4% inflation today saps your purchasing power. Your dollar buys less and less. Could you live today on what you earned in 1999? Taxes may be higher in the years ahead. Tax reduction and tax-advantaged investing are even more important whether you are 20, 40, or 60. We also need to be prepared financially for the rising costs of health and long-term care. No one wants the “Rip Van Winkle” experience in retirement, waking up 20 years from now only to find that the comfort of yesterday is gone. Retirees who retreat from growth investing may risk having this experience.

Vegetarian Classics for All Creamy Fall Butternut Squash Soup

National Vegetarian Awareness month. This is a great month to make changes and incorporate a leaner diet full of vegetables and grains. If you are worried about protein, don’t be. Eating nuts, seeds, and beans can give amble supply of that daily allowance. By the way, sprouting beans is a much better way to digest them as well as supplying much more vitamins and enzymes. So if digestibility is a problem, try this technique for surprising results. A vegetarian diet has so many benefits that, experts agree, can slim your physique as well as improve your health. With so much variety of vegetables at the farmers’ market, it’s hard to pass on observing National Vegetarian Awareness month. The impact of food choice is great. Kenneth Thorpe, a health policy expert from Emory University, suggests “75% of the money being spent for chronic medical conditions such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes are preventable by healthier lifestyle choices.” Experts agree that “40% of all deaths in the U.S., approximately 900,000 people a year, die from causes that are completely avoidable by maintaining lower weight, eating more fruits and vegetables, exercising more, drinking less alcohol, and eliminating the habit of smoking.” Implementing a plant-based diet has wide ranging benefits. Besides lowering the intake of saturated fats and cholesterol, a vegetarian-based diet creates more variety with complex carbohydrates, dietary fiber, and ingestion of carotenoids and phytonutrients, as

well as receiving ample sources of magnesium, folic acid, and vitamins C and E, according to the Institute of Nutritional Science in Germany. Needless to say, going vegetarian should be considered with all its advantages. Eating a plant-based diet also has an effect on one’s mental state. According to a recent study published in the Nutritional Journal, mood states were improved after a group of omnivores changed from a meat-based diet to a plant-based diet. Meat produces more omega 6 fatty acid, which promotes changes in the brain and negatively disturbs mood. Omega 6 has been linked to clinical symptoms of depression. Omega 3, however, which is found in walnuts and flax seeds, has been linked to mood improvement and is instrumental in fighting mental disorders such as depression. The benefits of a vegetarian diet are too great to ignore. October offers many opportunities to celebrate the fall season. With Halloween and pumpkin carving being the most famous, other national observance days give us the opportunity to celebrate life in a more healthy way. Since October is National Vegetarian Awareness month, trying a vegetarian fare may not be a bad idea. It’s all about choice. Note: Consult your healthcare professional

› 2 butternut squashes or 8 cups of cubed 2-inch pieces › 1/2 cup water › 2 cans coconut milk › 1 tsp coriander › 1 tsp sea salt or to taste › Dash of pepper (optional) This dish is simple and delicious. Remove skin and seeds from the squash. Cube into 2-inch pieces. Add to pot with water. Bring to boil and simmer covered for 20 min or until done. When cooled, add to blender with coconut milk and blend until creamy. Put back into pot and heat. Add coriander and salt. Simmer for 5 min. Add scallions or parsley as garnish. Serve warm with bread or crackers.
French Lentil Loaf › 1 cup French lentils › 2 cups water › 2 cloves garlic › 1 tsp turmeric › 1/2 tsp cumin › 1 sweet potato, peeled and cubed › 1/2 cup walnuts › 2 Tbsp chopped fresh sage › 3 scallions, chopped › 1 shallot, diced › 1 celery stalks, sliced thin › 1 zucchini, cubed › 1 cup chopped parsley › 2 tsp sea salt or to taste Cook lentils covered in water with garlic for 30 min. Add cubed sweet potato, turmeric, and cumin and cook covered 10 min more. Set aside to cool. To bowl add cooked lentils and rest of ingredients. Bake at 350 for 30 min. Cool and serve a slice of lentil loaf on individual plates lined with romaine lettuce. Top with balsamic vinaigrette dressing, and then top with sunflower seed sprouts and a few slivers of red onion.
Swiss Chard Sauté › 2 bunches Swiss chard, cleaned › 2 cloves garlic › 1 Tbsp toasted sesame seed oil › 2 Tbsp shoyu or soy sauce › Dash cayenne pepper Heat 4 cups water in pan. Boil whole Swiss chard for 3 min. Remove and discard water. Run chard under cold water until cooled. Slice chard into 2-inch strips. Set aside. To skillet add sesame seed oil and heat. Add diced garlic and toss with cooked chard for 3 min. Add shoyu and dash cayenne pepper.

Webb’s new Upper School “Courtyard of Sparta” contains an outdoor classroom and ample gathering space for social interaction and/or quiet reflection and study.
Four projects highlight this latest stage of development. The centerpiece is a 35,000-square-foot multipurpose building that will house a K-12 dance studio, a new robotics center, a broadcast journalism set/classroom, and additional classes for world languages and music. It will also hold a new gym used for Lower School P.E. and athletic teams. The second project is an enhancement to the Upper School, including a new front entrance, an expanded weight training facility, and additional study space. The third undertaking is an outdoor pavilion near Webb’s Lower School, which will enable Lower School classes to be held outside and provide sheltered space for social/recreational interaction. The fourth project is a courtyard centered within our Upper School. It contains an outdoor classroom and gathering space for social interaction and/or quiet reflection and study. Its feature attraction is an eight-foot-high Spartan (the school mascot) crafted from scrap iron, stainless steel, and copper. This project is complete. Exceptional facilities are not a prerequisite for a quality education, but being able to learn on a campus designed to inspire one’s best is an advantage for any student, and having specific facilities to support specific activities is important. Webb takes great pride in the work of our students and faculty, and we invest in and design our facilities to best ensure that their work is supported.

The new Carter Elementary School has opened its doors for its first school year, and leading the way is its principal, Shay Siler. “Car te r Elementary
School has a history of strong, effective leadership,” said Shay. “It is an honor and privilege to work beside the dedicated teachers and staff who are committed to providing a quality education to our students. Their reflective and effective practices encourage each of us to be our best for our school family and for the students of Carter Elementary School.” Shay has worked in education for 17 years. In that time, she’s been a classroom teacher, a curriculum coordinator, and an administrator. Her career has taken her to Charleston, SC; Monroe, NC;
and Knoxville. “A typical school day includes greeting students each morning in the car rider area, visiting classrooms, meeting with teachers to discuss data that drives instruction and practices that engage learners, assisting in the lunchroom, attending various curriculum meetings throughout the day, aligning resources to the needs of the school, teaching and learning, and assisting with the dismissal in the afternoon,” she said. Although her days are jam-packed, Shay rises to the challenges that face her every day. “Change is constant and everpresent in education,” she said. “Accountability is a strong component in education during the past few years. Teaching and learning is a reciprocal process that we commit to each day as educators. Like our students, educators continue to grow professionally and learn innovative ways to engage our students in a learning environment that is nurturing and academically challenging.” Shay earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the College of Charleston. She also earned master’s and Ed.S. degrees from the University of Tennessee. “The greatest benefits and joys of being an educator are working with students and having an active role in the learning and growing each school year,” she said. “It is inspiring to observe students interact with each other and collaborate on topics to foster their own understanding and mastery of skills.” The new Carter Elementary School is located at 8455 Strawberry Plains Pike.

It’s pushed up slowly into the heart and into the obstructed artery. A small amount of pure alcohol is released into this area during a span of five minutes, blocking the outflow with a tiny balloon that is controlled by the catheter. The alcohol relaxes and deadens the area of obstruction without having to surgically go in and cut out the muscle. “What the alcohol actually does is cause a heart attack in a specified area of the heart,” said Dr. Mehta. “This causes damage and deadening to that area. After a short time, due to the damage, the obstructed area will actually thin out. Technically this is just a controlled heart attack.” During the procedure patients might feel some chest pain and rapid heartbeat. There is also a chance of needing a pacemaker or defibrillator once the procedure is done due to weakening in a portion of the heart muscle. However, this is the same risk as with open heart surgery. The first Alcohol Ablation procedure was performed overseas in Great Britain in 1994.
“I’m so glad I had this procedure; it’s truly incredible,” said James. “Now I can walk normal distances, and I feel great. I just wish I’d had it done earlier as it has been life-changing for me.”

However, we are taking a break from talking about fashion for the month of October in honor of the clients and consignors we know personally who are facing this demon. Statistically speaking, breast cancer impacts one in eight American women every year. (It is the second most common cancer for women behind skin cancer.) Every year 40,000 women in the U.S. die from this disease. As a small business, we have the privilege to know our customers. Many we know by name. We are a local women’s consignment store; a woman-owned business with eight women employees. There isn’t one of us who doesn’t know or hasn’t known someone who has been diagnosed with breast cancer, is facing breast cancer, or died from breast cancer. Statistically,
it seems one of us will likely face this dreaded disease ourselves. While there are approximately 233,000 new cases in the U.S. each year, the death rates have been declining since 1989, largely due to increased awareness and earlier detection through screening. Celebrating and Honoring the Volunteer Spirit Last month, Random Acts of Flowers’ staff and board gathered together at the home of Jacqueline and Keith Holdbrooks for its annual “Vol-A-Bration.” Those in attendance came for good barbeque, drinks, and to celebrate and honor the many volunteers who make the local charity successful. Two volunteers were given special recognition for their exemplary service to the mission. The first award, the Glen Baxmann Award, was given to Donna Alexander for dedicating the most hours in service of RAF Knoxville’s charitable mission during the course of the last fiscal year. In contributing so much of her time, Donna most resembled the selfless attributes for which the award honors. An attendee of the American Floral Art Institute in Chicago, Glen continued to contribute his time and floral talents by designing and training other volunteers, all while courageously fighting his own battle with cancer. He lost his battle in March of this year, but his memory lives on in the volunteers

who he trained and the many smiles he brought with his floral arrangements. The second award of the night was the Rosie Bumpus Award, given to Bettie Kurtz, who embodied the extraordinary volunteer spirit with whom the award was named. Given in honor of Rosie Bumpus, the award is the greatest recognition of someone who gives of themselves to others more than can possibly be expressed. Rosie battled Cystic Fibrosis for many years, and
even through all of her many treatments became one of Random Acts of Flowers’ greatest supporters. She was the first Random Acts of Flowers recipient to send a photo of themselves with their flowers, and she shared her “story” many times with local, regional, and national press. Rosie sadly passed away in June while awaiting a lung transplant, but her desire and commitment to spread joy to others is the very embodiment of the mission of Random Acts of Flowers. While these awards were special recognition, the many volunteers who were in attendance and those who were not deserve the greatest admiration. More than 200 volunteers consistently donate their time to source flower donations, repurpose flowers, and deliver arrangements to patients in area healthcare facilities – fulfilling the mission every week with exceptional kindness and compassion. The Art Market Gallery is a professional artists’ cooperative which has thrived in downtown Knoxville for more than 30 years. Planning Your Home with Kids in Mind Deciding to move is a family decision. Many kids are resistant to change. Will there be room for me? Will I need to get rid of my toys? Will I have friends in my new neighborhood? Magazines and websites display images of slides and climbing walls for children’s entertainment. These may be cool ideas, but they’re not practice or budget conscious projects. So what are some ideas on integrating your children into your home design plan? I ’m a l w a y s tripping over my children’s backpacks, lunch boxes, and shoes, and don’t even get me started on the sporting equipment! Create a “drop zone” with cubbies for each child with a shoe bin or pull-out drawers for ballerina slippers and baseball gloves. You can even cover the cubbies with a door or place them in the garage where they’re out of sight. Peg boards or cork boards can be mounted inside or on the door for school/sports calendars and birthday party invitations. A kitchenette refrigerator with slide-out drawers are ideal for a snack station. Fill them with healthy, pre-portioned snack options they can grab on the go. (If your kitchen isn’t large enough for a second refrigerator, use the lunch meat drawer.) Build in a slide-out stool so they can help you prepare dinner or, better yet, wash the dishes after! Creating space for your children isn’t just part of the Martha Stewart and Pinterest craze. Designating a place for them inside the home establishes order, creates a sense of safety and importance, and cultivates autonomy and creativity. Hurray for cooler weather, bright autumn leaves, pumpkins, mums, and pansies! Hurray for bonfires, cider, carving pumpkins! Can you tell I’m happy to see fall coming? October is one of the best gardening months, so I have plenty to talk about. ›› The first thing you need to do is walk around and see what’s going on in your yard. I’m betting that a fair amount of you have some things that are dead or close to it. At this point in the lecture, let me make a confession: I killed an entire flower bed this summer. I was in such a funk after a close friend died that I didn’t even look at my flower beds for a month. By the time I did, the weeds were taller than me. I had to mow them all down, spray an herbicide on them, and start my landscape bed all over. I’m not saying this to be depressing; I’m saying this to reassure you that if you have a bed
or beds in your landscape that have gone to weeds, there are always second and third and twentieth chances! Fall is a great time for new beginnings. ›› With that in mind, October is generally the best month for planting (or re-planting, as the case may be) trees, shrubs, and perennials. Our soil temperature stays warm, and we usually get rain during the winter, so the plants have several months to get their roots established before it starts getting hot. ›› If you haven’t gotten your pansies planted, it’s not too late. Pansies can be planted now and will last all winter and on through spring. Don’t forget containers! Consider putting mums, cabbage, kale, mustard, or grasses in with pansies for interesting colors and textures. ›› If you’ve noticed that your yard is boring now that summer blooming flowers are done, add plants with fall and winter

appeal. Some trees, shrubs, and perennials are at their best this time of year. Burning bush and nandina turn fiery red, beautyberry and winterberry hollies put on clusters of berries, and fall annuals and perennials are showing off their blooms. ›› Fall is cleanup time! I have already seen several plants dropping leaves. If the leaves were unhealthy or if you have lots of them, you need to get them up. Otherwise, they can be shredded and used as mulch or compost. ›› Speaking of compost, this is a terrific time to add organic “stuff” to your flower beds. If you add it now, it has all winter to break down and add nutrients to your soil. When spring gets here, all those nutrients will be ready to make your plants grow. ›› Let’s talk about water. I know I got lazy because we didn’t have to water at all during the spring and early summer. One day I looked out and saw that my poor hydrangeas and azaleas were literally dying of thirst! If we’re not getting at least an inch of rain a week, you’ll need to water. This is especially true for those plants that you put in now. ›› While you’re overcome with your enthusiasm for gardening, resist the urge to prune. This isn’t a good time to do any cutting except to remove dead branches. ›› October is a great time to mulch. It’s nice and cool, and the mulch will help preserve moisture and stabilize ground temperatures during the winter. Don’t bury your plants! Three inches is enough. ›› You can never stop weeding. Get weeds out and do a new application of a pre-emergent to keep them from taking over your beds during the winter. ›› It’s time to start planting bulbs! Some people are intimidated by bulbs, but please don’t be. They are a terrific lesson in delayed gratification. Different bulbs have different requirements, so read the packaging for directions. ›› If you’ve been ignoring your bird feeders, it’s time to start filling them again. Make sure they’re clean, and buy a good quality food. Don’t forget the birdbaths either! Keep them full and clean as well. Glass and ceramic baths should be brought in before a freeze, but metal and plastic baths can stay out all year. Ladybugs like to crawl around on windows and

Five Years Strong and Still Giddy During the hustle of summer, with children running through my house, I tend to be more relaxed with cleaning.

y the end of summer,
my house feels a little dingier and needs some TLC before I feel comfortable inviting friends over for evening barbeques and weekend get-togethers. Enter the honey-do list. Luckily, this is one chore my husband, John, doesn’t mind tackling in our home. But, it wasn’t always so. Five years ago, before we began the deep cleaning business, John was a restaurant manager. One of his most frustrating challenges was getting the commercial kitchen and dining areas clean. I think he tried most every cleaning technique, product, and tool in the market, but those restaurant floors never succumbed to his efforts. The LAST thing he wanted to do when he got home was to even think about helping to scrub the kitchen floor.

So, in 2008, when John and I flew to Arizona to check out some innovative cleaning equipment, my husband was an “easy sell.” The equipment was amazing, and he still gets giddy from time to time when he encounters a floor that looks beyond help that he can transform into something beautiful. The chaos that accompanies celebrating Halloween, such as costumes, may even cause a great natured dog to be nervous, irritable, and possibly snapping. Naturally protective breeds may mistake jovial, good fun as a genuine threat. Most dogs are happier in the quiet comfort of their home. Do not leave your dog in the
backyard; there have been reports of taunting, feeding, agitating, and even poisoning on Halloween. A nervous dog will also bark and howl at the constant foot traffic. One half hour prior to trick-or-treat time put your dog in a secure, quiet place in your home as far away from the greeting door as possible. Depending on the dog, you may crate him. Candy is NOT intended for pets. Chocolate can be especially dangerous as well as candy wrappers. If your pet consumes wrappers, it can cause intestinal blockage that can lead to surgery having to be performed to save their life. Keep all candy OUT of reach of your pets! Ag Day 2013 Promises New Venue, New Take on UT Institute of Agriculture

xciting changes, including a new location inside the recently renovated Brehm Animal Science Arena, await visitors to Ag Day 2013. Ag Day is the annual event for alumni and friends of the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture. Festivities will begin on October 5, four hours before the Vols take on the Georgia Bulldogs in Neyland Stadium. Current and former students, faculty, staff, and friends will celebrate reunions and learn what’s new at the UT Institute of Agriculture. This year’s theme, “If you think you know ag, think again,” focuses on technological advancements and efficiencies in agriculture, as well as unexpected agricultural career paths. A presentation of two inaugural awards, the Horizon Award and the Meritorious Service Award, will be made. Tours of the new Large Animal Hospital at the UT Veterinary Medical Center
and the renovated Food Science and Brehm Animal Science buildings will be given. Ag Day is fun for all ages. Marble Springs was the home of John Sevier, Tennessee’s first governor. He moved to Knoxville shortly after Tennessee became an official state. He owned more than 300 acres in South Knoxville during his time as Tennessee governor, state senator, and U.S. Representative. The state purchased more than 30 acres of the property in the 1940s, and the site has been open to the public since the 1960s. The Governor John Sevier Memorial Association manages the site and programming for Marble Springs. The nonprofit organization also offers tours of the historic structures, and the site includes hiking trails, an arboretum, and a Certified Wildlife Habitat for the public to enjoy.

Take this scenic byway through the Cherokee and Nantahala National Forests in autumn, and fall in love with the brilliant colors of the Appalachian Mountains. To see autumn’s colors at their peak, plan your trip around the end of October or early November. You’ll be astounded by fiery oranges, deep reds, and glowing yellows of more than 120 species of trees native to the area. Notice how the autumn sunlight dances off the light-hued wood of the poplar aspen and its luminescent, quaking leaves. Smell the crisp air; it may be laced with a hint of wintergreen from the aromatic yellow birch, easily recognized by its golden yellow bark.

Drive a couple miles
north from the eastern terminus of the byway in Santeetlah Gap, NC, and you’ll find the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest. This 3,800-acre forest is home to the largest stand of old-growth trees in the eastern United States. The forest was dedicated to the poet, Joyce Kilmer, famous for his poem, “Trees.” His famous line reads: I think that I shall never see a poem lovely as a tree. The line is especially poignant 70

when you take in this beautiful land and trees in their shimmering autumn glory. Come hike among the red oak, and take in the earthy smells of the forest just before it descends into winter. Get back on the byway and continue your drive through Nantahala National Forest. Full of plunging gorges and towering eastern
hemlock, an evergreen that lives more than 500 years, the Nantahala National Forest will leave you with a deep sense of peace and tranquility as you roam the landscape, taking in the region's dazzling colors and skyscraping mountains. Continue west along the byway into Tennessee, where you enter the Cherokee National Forest. A 145,380-acre wilderness, this national forest is known mostly for its whitewater rivers and abundance of waterfalls. Stop and have a picnic in the crisp fall air, and hike around the forest to see the dogwood trees turning crimson and purple or the maple leaves changing to their brilliant red. Want to take a stunning side trip? Take the byway further west into Tennessee, then near Tellico River turn southeast and drive six miles along River Road, passing the historic Tellico Ranger Station on the way, until you reach Bald River Falls. The falls will enchant you during the autumn season as the water rushes by, carrying leaves from a black or rose cherry tree over time-smoothed stones. Come back in the winter to see Bald River Falls when it is covered in ice – a true winter wonderland. As the sun sets on the south, leaves will dance and their colors will sing, truly embodying those famed words: I think that I shall never see a poem lovely as a tree. had decided to hope for the best and rely on the money she had saved. Sound familiar? It is definitely a familiar refrain in my office. Ah, I thought, I had found her missing puzzle piece! I was glad to explain that there is an alternative to traditional long-term care insurance that does not require monthly premiums – a concept called asset-based long-term care. You simply reallocate a portion of your existing assets into an investment that provides a multiplier effect of long-term care benefits, should you need care. If you never need long-term care, your investment either passes to your heirs, or you can cancel the policy and get your money back. It’s as simple as that. In her case, reallocating $50,000 provided her with $249,000 in tax-free long-term care benefits and a $72,000 death benefit if she never used it. Plus she had the choice to simply cancel the policy and get a return of her investment if she changed her mind in later years. Easy, yet powerful, right? But still, it’s human nature to procrastinate. Turnabout? I experienced an unusual turn of events recently that was rather notable. I had a bank, a large regional bank, asking if perhaps I was considering any future borrowing to finance a potential business expansion.
To set the record straight, we’re not considering any expansion that would require financing. Nonetheless, this particular bank is somewhat perplexed, as they and many of their competitors don’t seem to be participating in the economic recovery, at least as it relates to small business lending. This was a strange turn of events from just a few short years ago when financing was largely unavailable to small businesses. In fact, many banks “called in” loans from a variety of small businesses, a decision that severely jeopardized their existing operations, and in some instances caused the failure, or near failure, of
many of these same businesses. One of the great pleasures I derive from my publishing career is my ability to interact with hundreds of small businesses on a regular basis. You listen to their stories, share in their successes, and, sadly, experience firsthand an occasional failure. In our three decades as small business owners, we have navigated a number of recessions but none as devastating as the most recent one. One thing is for certain few of the business owners I visit with on a regular basis will forget the lessons of this recession, the largest since the Great Depression, anytime soon. During the last several years, small businesses have consolidated, eliminated marginal products and services, trimmed staff, improved productivity, and paid down debt. Today we manage more streamlined versions of our former businesses and have little appetite for any expansion requiring financing. Add to this the economic
uncertainty moving forward and the lessons of the past, and what remains is a great many small business owners who have elected to avoid borrowing. What does the future hold? For the banks, I’d sugge s t fi n d i n g a n alternative use for their unproductive capital. Small business owners have an aversion to borrowing at the present time. The recent recession is fresh on their minds, as well as the many negative stories of banks refusing to help struggling small businesses, the same banks that were the recipients of $431 billion in bank bailout funds from American taxpayers, many of whom were the same small business owners whose requests for assistance went largely ignored.

A
s a jogger, when finished, I cherish every mile. Not because I enjoyed it, not because I’m good at it, but because I did it. T h a n k f u l l y, g o n e a r e the days of tripping the mileage counter in the car to check distances. Now apps track every trail and tell you exactly how far you’ve been. Recently I jogged a usual route with the same predictable distance as I had done many times before. However, somehow I must have hit the pause button, because the mileage was a good bit shorter at the finish than times before. It was disappointing to say the least, not to mention I was tired, hot, and mentally spent. Then I had to decide whether to trust my smartphone or my route. It was tough looking at the distance and seeing less than expected. I wrestled. Could I be wrong, did I forget a part of the route? Or did I accidentally hit the pause button? Deep down I had a hard time deciding what to do, and I was even tempted to go further just to “see” my accomplishment. Nonetheless, due to time constraints, I accepted the lesser mileage on
the app counter and trusted that I had done what I set out to do. Doubt is a powerful deterrent that mysteriously robs us of the feeling of accomplishment when we reach a goal. You may recognize the voice. “You could have done more. You could have gone further. What did she mean by that? When are you ever going to finish this project?” The list goes on, and if we don’t recognize the power of doubt, it can rob us of the celebration we’re due when we do well. The opposite of doubt is belief. If you want to doubt less, then believe more. Only you can make that transition for yourself.
1. Believe in yourself. It’s that simple. The biggest gap in life lies between knowing and doing. We know what to do; we just have to do it. You can if you will. 2. Set goals. What saved my jog that day was the fact that I had a goal and a route to get there. Nothing can take that sense of accomplishment when we set out to do something and do it. That means having goals and not stopping short of achievement. 3. Surround yourself with people
who are on the move. Successful
people inspire one another, so be intentional who you hang out with. Invest your time wisely and be with people you can learn from.
4. Know your “nots.” Don’t be
afraid of who you are not, what you are not good at, and where you don’t need to spend your time. If you try to be everything to everyone, then you and those closest to you are the ones who will pay the often painful penalty. 5. Today is your priority. While goals are terrific, you can only live one day at a time, so live it well. It doubt powerful? That depends on how you believe.

Four Tips for Dealing with a Passive Aggressive Daughter-in-Law A person who is passive aggressive
in his or her behavior is difficult enough to deal with, but when that person is a family member, it is even worse. For mothers-in-law, dealing with a passive aggressive daughter-in-law can be tricky. Many times daughters-in-law show this behavior through comments they say to you that are hard to defend against, yet are hurtful and sting. More times than not, though, they use the malicious subterfuge of the undermining “accidental” oversights – not letting you know about special family events that are planned (and you find out after the fact) – or whenever you come around, she goes into the other room or never comes out of the other room when you show up. On top of all this, your daughter-in-law may shut down any chance for you to discuss what’s going on. She may say that nothing is wrong, she’s fine, put it back on

you in some way, or she may just set things up so she is not available to talk about it. So what can a mother-in-law do? The goal is to create a more balanced sense of power. By doing this you are in a place to create a significant change in your daughter-in-law, in yourself, and in your relationship with her. Here are some steps you can take to get you moving in the right direction.
1. Take a few emotional steps back –
Realize what she’s doing to you is not personal. She behaves this way with other people as well. 2. Be a role model – Instead of slinking away or showing your anger, help her see that having feelings are ok.
3. Acknowledge her feelings even when she won’t – By stating to her in a
calm, compassionate way what she’s feeling, you help her see that expressing feelings can be a good way to deepen and strengthen
a relationship.
4. Help her see you really do want to understand –
When you show her she matters enough to listen to her feelings you will start to shift the power and begin to create a better relationship. Take these steps to kindly, gently show your daughter-in-law that not everyone is the same – that you are different. Help her see that the two of you can have a relationship based on respect. the way in which they answer the telephone and communicate with their customers on the telephone is their most important asset. How often have we as consumers decided in less than 10 seconds whether or not we were going to do business with a company or someone depending on how they answered the phone? It’s so important. The best way for me to discuss these skills in this particular platform is to list them out. However, if you’re interested in a much more detailed approach, please see my professional services page on my website. » Answer the phone by the third ring, expressing a welcome, identifying the company and then yourself. » Remember that customers can hear your mood and appreciation for the call by your voice, tone, speed of speech, and energy level. Smile – they can hear it in your voice. » Try to make sure there’s no background noise or distractions while speaking to the customer. You really can’t multi-task

well when you’re talking on the phone to a customer. » If it’s not a good time for you to talk, then don’t answer the phone. » The person who initiates the call is the person who should initiate the end of the call. » Before discussing personal matters with a customer, verify that now is a good time for them to discuss such matters. » Never get too personal with a customer unless the customer is the one to initiate such comments or questions. » Never place a caller on hold without getting their permission to do so first, and never leave them on hold for more than 30 seconds without coming back to inform them of progress or possible further wait. » Always reply with a yes or no or perhaps a “let me check to see if he’s available” before asking the caller for their name after they have asked to speak to someone. » Ask the caller for their name and number before transferring them to another department or person in case the call is accidentally
lost. Inform them of who and where you’re transferring them to and why you are doing so. Give the name and direct number to the caller in case the call is accidentally lost. » Give needed information to the second customer service rep so the caller doesn’t have to repeat information already given. » Show customer appreciation for their call by thanking them, asking them if there’s any more you can help them with, and wishing them a wonderful day. These are just a few etiquette skills that go a long way in ensuring that our customers feel our appreciation for them and our commitment to excellence.
