Tennova Heart Institute Turkey Creek Medical Center ardiovascular diseases, including heart attacks, strokes, and congestive heart failure (CHF), remain the greatest threat to life for East Tennesseans. But “take heart” – heart diseases can be predicted and prevented. Early detection is our best weapon. The expert team of cardiologists and cardiac surgeons at Tennova’s Turkey Creek Medical Center is ready to treat any heart condition, from irregular heart rhythms to blockages and heart attacks. In addition to treating heart disease, Turkey Creek Medical Center is a center for world-class research where results from clinical trials are being used to develop breakthrough drugs and devices. We are proud to feature one such landmark study in this month’s edition that gained national attention on an episode of the ABC drama Grey’s Anatomy. The Parachute IV clinical trial, a minimally invasive treatment for congestive heart failure, offers an estimated six million Americans the promise of a brighter and healthier future. The procedure was performed for the first time in Tennessee and only the third time nationally by the Tennova Heart Institute’s Director of Clinical Research, Malcolm Foster, MD. Dr. Foster, along with Turkey Creek Medical Center CEO, Lance Jones, recently sat down with Everything Knoxville to talk about this exciting program.

board-certified and have extensive experience in open heart surgery. And, of course, we are extremely proud of the worldwide clinical research being performed by this stellar group.

Lance: Turkey Creek Medical Center offers a complete range of cardiac services, including open heart surgery. Most of our cardiologists are with East Tennessee Heart Consultants, the same physicians who were part of the nationally recognized Baptist Heart Institute. Most recently two additional cardiologists with more than 60 years combined experience joined the team, with one having served as a former co-founder of an award-winning cardiac program. EK: Dr. Foster, let’s talk about the Parachute IV trial and, more specifically, your patient, 47-year-old Gregg Fruchtnicht.

8

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE October 2013

Dr. Foster: Mr. Fruchtnicht came to us with the classic symptoms of congestive heart failure – shortness of breath, fatigue, and a rapid heartbeat. He could barely walk up stairs or even across the room. We determined he was an excellent candidate for the Parachute, a device inserted through a

catheter into the heart. The parachuteshaped device is deployed and allows remodeling of the enlarged heart muscle into a healthy shape, thus improving its function. You can see today that Mr. Fruchtnicht’s quality of life has changed significantly for the better. EK: You described the Parachute device as “elegantly simple.” Why? Dr. Foster: The Parachute device has a very simple design with a frame of hooks and wires and an umbrella-like barrier that protects the damaged heart muscle from pressure and strain. The Parachute is Photographs by D. Roberts Photography

inserted using a small catheter with no incision. EK: Where is the Parachute IV in trials, and who is a candidate for this device? Dr. Foster: Parachute IV is a Phase 2 Clinical trial, enrolling up to 475 patients with apical LV dysfunction, an LV Ejection Fraction of <35%, and Class III-IV symptoms of heart failure. EK: Mr. Fruchtnicht described his almost instantaneous feeling of enhanced vitality in recovery almost immediately after the procedure was performed. You’ve described how you are often able to observe a patient’s improved well-being even while a cardiac procedure is being performed. This must be gratifying. Dr. Foster: Absolutely. In the Catheterization Lab, we see people get better right before our eyes. It’s truly gratifying! EK: Lance, how important is the Tennova Heart Institute to patients living in the Farragut, West Knox, and surrounding areas? Lance: To know this level of cardiac care and research is available right here in the Turkey Creek area is amazing. Patients do not have to travel anywhere else to get heart care on par with some of the biggest cardiac programs in the

country. We are so fortunate to have this group of physicians serving our campus. EK: Dr. Foster, what other advances are taking place at Turkey Creek’s Tennova Heart Institute amongst your colleagues? Dr. Foster: We have a very close relationship with Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel. Our Emergency Department has instituted the ER Extra Program. Nursing and Cardiac Rehabilitation promote outstanding care and recovery. Many of our patients remain with us for long-term wellness programs. EK: In closing, do you have anything further you would like to tell our readers? Dr. Foster: Turkey Creek Medical Center is a very special place. We draw on years of experience from the Baptist Heart Institute and deliver world-class care in a comfortable new facility with state-of-the-art technology. I cannot imagine a better place to work or receive care.

“Elegantly Simple” Those are the words used by Turkey Creek Medical Center Cardiologist and Clinical Research Director, Malcolm Foster, MD, to describe the revolutionary new medical device used by his team in a landmark, first-of-its-kind treatment for heart failure here in the United States.

he trial procedure ,

performed for the first time in Tennessee on February 6th at Turkey Creek Medical Center and only the third time in the nation, involved implanting a device referred to as the “Parachute” into the heart of 47-year-old Gregg Fruchtnicht of Sevierville, Tennessee. The procedure gained even more national attention after being featured on the ABC drama Grey’s Anatomy. Gregg suffered with congestive heart failure (CHF) after years of damage to the heart muscle from multiple heart attacks. He had his first heart attack in 2005, followed by another in 2007, which led to five heart bypasses. However, damage had been done to his heart, and he developed continuing side effects from CHF – shortness of breath, fatigue, and a rapid heartbeat. “Inserted through a catheter into the heart, the Parachute device is deployed and allows remodeling of the enlarged heart muscle into a healthy shape, thus improving its function,” said Dr. Foster. “Gregg did extremely well, and he expressed an improvement in his ability to breathe just days after the procedure.” “I can climb stairs now without becoming completely winded – something I could not do before this procedure,” said Gregg. “It’s gratifying to be a part of something that may become a standard treatment for others like me.” After a heart attack, many heart failure patients experience enlargement of their left ventricle, causing a decrease in cardiac output, resulting in heart failure symptoms such as shortness of breath. Treatment options for patients whose ventricle has enlarged are limited. The Parachute device offers the first minimally invasive catheter-based treatment to partition the damaged muscle, excluding the 10

non-functional heart muscle from the healthy, functional muscle to decrease the overall volume of the left ventricle and restore its geometry and function. “I feel as if I’ve been given a second chance at life,” said Gregg. “There simply are no words to describe my gratitude to the caring and compassionate medical professionals at Turkey Creek Medical Center or the simple joy I experience each and every time I climb stairs.” Heart failure is a common, debilitating, and potentially deadly condition in which the heart is unable to supply sufficient blood flow to meet the needs of the body. Symptoms of heart failure negatively impact quality of life and include shortness of breath, persistent coughing or wheezing, buildup of excess fluid in body tissues (edema), fatigue, lack of appetite or nausea, impaired thinking, and increased heart rate. More than 20 million people around the world are affected, with approximately six million in the United States, where

it is responsible for 1.1 million hospitalizations annually. Tennova Healthcare, with six acute care hospitals, more than 1,000 leading physicians, and more than 5,000 healthcare associates, is committed to providing East Tennessee with the highest level of experienced and compassionate care using the latest, state-of-the-art technology. The Parachute devices for heart failure, and multiple clinical trials taking place at Turkey Creek Medical Center, represent Tennova Healthcare’s commitment to improving the cardiovascular health of our community. Get Close to Fall Color at Biltmore

F

all road trips through the western North Carolina mountains offer what very few areas in the country can: a chance to drive on roads canopied in golden autumn leaf colors. Stopping at Biltmore along the way is a great fall travel idea since the estate’s 8,000 acres give the chance to stretch the legs and explore that color close up. Park the car and wander through Biltmore’s formal gardens, filled with colorful mums and other seasonal blooms, hike through forests, or even climb to the rooftop of America’s Largest Home, the 250-room Biltmore House. Whatever you choose, Biltmore’s sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Mountains make the estate a sweet spot for taking in vivid fall color.

where children can run off energy in the Village Green or play in Pisgah Playground. The playground is a new addition this year and features a ferry that children can navigate across a small lagoon. A Children’s Maze offers a pathway through a forest of 500 trees. The Village also features a kid-sized Land Rover Course complete with small Land Rover carts and a track populated with small hills and other obstacles to drive over. The course is part of the estate’s Land Rover Driving School.

Two rooms inside Biltmore House – the Second Floor Living Hall and the Salon – re-open this fall after the estate’s Museum Services team restores them to their appearances as they were when George Vanderbilt opened the home in 1895. To bring the rooms back to their original states, the team has spent the summer conserving all the furnishings, recreating elaborate window treatments, and making structural changes. As appropriate for such a grand space, several notable paintings were returned to their original locations in the Hall. John Singer Sargent’s portraits of Richard Morris Hunt and Frederick Law Olmsted and Anders Zorn’s painting “The Waltz,” which have been hanging temporarily in the Salon, will once again hang where George Vanderbilt intended. The restored room reopened September 1. Relocating the paintings from the Salon has led to its reinterpretation. Curators decided to tell the story of how the room has changed through the years. Removal of a wall revealed an original firebox and brick walls. A section of the fabric ceiling treatment is being removed to show the terra cotta tiled ceiling above. Information panels will explain the new interpretation of the room when it re-opens Oct. 1.

Guide in a Continuously Shifting Culture Draw Bigger Circles, Take Risks, Love Wildly, Share Generously, and Embrace Opportunity

hree years. 1,095 days. That’s how long I’ve been the Senior Pastor at Central Baptist Bearden, and I’m overwhelmed by two emotions: humility and pride. Humility because I’m so appreciative they called and trusted me to be their friend, teacher, preacher, family member, and fellow traveler on such an important journey. Pride, dangerous as that emotion is, because of this congregation’s overwhelming capacity to draw bigger circles, take risks, love wildly, share generously, and embrace opportunity. For three years we have explored our congregation’s mission to “Know” Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, to “Grow” as his disciples, and “Share” his love in word and deed. The church scene has shifted dramatically in the 21st century, and we assume that such changes will continue. Although some see such transitions as polarizing and divisive, we choose to see them as incredible opportunities. I am often asked what I envision happening in the future. I think these three emphases should be our guide in a continuously shifting culture. 1. Unity and Diversity

We are a both/and kind of church, and that makes us unique, unusual, and, I think, quite Christian. I say yes to discussing, debating, talking, and learning from each other, and I say no to arguing, hating, vilifying, or demeaning each other – especially when we disagree. I say yes to prioritizing our mission and purpose for existence, and I say no to allowing secondary issues, beliefs, or convictions to sidetrack us. I say yes to the continuing support of our roots and traditions, but I say no to allowing politics, religious or secular, denominational or para-church, to divide us. I say yes to a church that embraces the willingness of early Christians to cross 14

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE October 2013

ethnic, economic, social, cultural, and political barriers, but I say no to a church that looks too much alike, sounds too much alike, and does not reflect God’s wide creation. I say yes to a community of faith united by love for Christ, committed to a lifestyle of service, and motivated by joy and hope, but I say no to a church energized by strife,

stubbornness, self-centeredness, and a future that’s always looking backwards, longing for what was rather than the what-can-be. I say yes to a church that moves with caution, prayer, and is always in step with its core values, but I say no to a church whose inactivity or fear of change resigns it to irrelevance, impotent to engage in its mission and left only with stories of once-filled halls and once-sung songs of praise.

2. Inward Care and Outward Dare Dr. Wade Bibb, Senior Pastor of Central Bearden

Opportunities require careful, constant, coarse corrections, or we will fail our mission. We must care for and nurture those who come to this place even as we find new, creative, meaningful avenues to reach those who will never walk through those doors. The biblical images of the Church as the body of Christ and the people of God embrace both our need and opportunity for “inward care and outward dare.” I say yes to a church that cares deeply for those who join our fellowship and our journey with God, but I say no to a church that will not sacrificially engage its community. I say yes to a church that educates its members and helps them process their inward faith with outward experiences, and I say no to a church that will not seek creative means to improve the lives of those whom they pass each Sunday as they drive to worship. I say yes to putting the needs of others first, ranging from the basic needs for life, the desire for love and encouragement, and the need for worship, but I say no to defining the church, worship, or meaningful Bible study by my preferences, my background, my likes and dislikes, or my prejudices. I say yes to lives characterized by prayer,

Faith & Ministry

meditation, and quietness in a world that continues to spin beyond our ability to control, but I say no to a spirituality that denies the needs of others, ignores the homeless and hungry, or hides behind comfortable piety.

3. Savior and Servant

We know that while Millennials, people born in the 1980s to early 2000s, “like” Jesus, they do not care for the church. They are suspicious of institutions that are too focused on its own life and future and too concerned about status quo instead of a willingness to engage in open discussion and frank dialogue. The church does not exist for us or for itself. The church exists for the Kingdom of God and to bless others. We must share in word and deed, near and far, with those like us and those unlike us. Anything else is failure. I say yes to

a church that takes Jesus’ words and Jesus’ life seriously, valuing others over self, love over hate, service over power, and peace over conflict. I say no to a church that puts its needs before the needs of its neighbors, its institutional struggles over its mission, and its fear of failure over the possibilities for transformation. I say yes to a budget and servants seeking to respond to needs we have overlooked, individuals we have forgotten, and those whom the world is reluctant to acknowledge. I say no to a budget and servants seeking only to serve ourselves, please our desires, and honor those who are already like us and may not really need us. I say yes to a church that is generous in word and deed, bringing good news to broken lives, and I say no to programs that separate the spiritual needs of people from their holistic self, a separation Jesus was unwilling to recognize in his life or in his death. I say yes to a church that embraces the tension of individual responsibility and the corporate life of community, but I say no to a church that

abandons those who make mistakes, who flounder in their humanity, or have trouble trusting when they have been hurt so deeply. Such authenticity requires effort, determination, and intentionality by all of us. I’m convinced, however, that it’s worth the struggle. Who knows what can happen in the next 1,095 days. We welcome you to Central Bearden. You will be surprised at what you find.

The Two Biggest Retirement Misconceptions Presented by Ali Swofford

While the idea of retirement has changed, certain financial assumptions haven’t. We’ve heard about the “new retirement” – the mix of work and play that many of us feel we’ll have in our lives one day. While this is becoming a cultural assumption, it’s interesting that certain financial assumptions haven’t really changed with the times. In particular, there are two financial misconceptions that could prove financially harmful for baby boomers future.

1. Assuming retirement will last 10-15 years. Today, a quarter of the people

reaching 65 will live beyond 90, and 10% will live another five years or more.1 However, some of us may live much longer. The Census Bureau counted 53,364 centurions in 2010, and the numbers are growing.2 If you have good health insurance and access to excellent health care, you may live even longer. Many people don’t realize how much retirement money they may need. 2. Assuming too little risk. Our appetite for risk declines as we get older, and rightfully so. Yet there may be a danger in becoming too risk-averse. Holding onto your retirement money is certainly important; so is your retirement income and quality of life. There are three financial issues that can affect both: taxes, health care costs, and inflation. Over time, even 3-4% inflation today saps your purchasing power. Your dollar buys less and less. Could you live today on what you earned in 1999? Taxes may be higher in the years ahead. Tax reduction and tax-advantaged investing are even more important whether you are 20, 40, or 60. We also need to be prepared financially for the rising costs of health and long-term care. No one wants the “Rip Van Winkle” experience in retirement, waking up 20 years from now only to find that the comfort of yesterday is gone. Retirees who retreat from growth investing may risk having this experience.

How are you envisioning retirement right now? Has this vision changed? Is retir-

ing becoming more of a priority? Are you retired and looking to improve your finances? Regardless of where you are, it is vital to avoid the common misconceptions and proceed with clarity.

Vegetarian Classics for All Creamy Fall Butternut Squash Soup

It’s a Choice

O

ctober

is

National Vegetarian Awareness month. This is a great month to make changes and incorporate a leaner diet full of vegetables and grains. If you are worried about protein, don’t be. Eating nuts, seeds, and beans can give amble supply of that daily allowance. By the way, sprouting beans is a much better way to digest them as well as supplying much more vitamins and enzymes. So if digestibility is a problem, try this technique for surprising results. A vegetarian diet has so many benefits that, experts agree, can slim your physique as well as improve your health. With so much variety of vegetables at the farmers’ market, it’s hard to pass on observing National Vegetarian Awareness month. The impact of food choice is great. Kenneth Thorpe, a health policy expert from Emory University, suggests “75% of the money being spent for chronic medical conditions such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes are preventable by healthier lifestyle choices.” Experts agree that “40% of all deaths in the U.S., approximately 900,000 people a year, die from causes that are completely avoidable by maintaining lower weight, eating more fruits and vegetables, exercising more, drinking less alcohol, and eliminating the habit of smoking.” Implementing a plant-based diet has wide ranging benefits. Besides lowering the intake of saturated fats and cholesterol, a vegetarian-based diet creates more variety with complex carbohydrates, dietary fiber, and ingestion of carotenoids and phytonutrients, as

well as receiving ample sources of magnesium, folic acid, and vitamins C and E, according to the Institute of Nutritional Science in Germany. Needless to say, going vegetarian should be considered with all its advantages. Eating a plant-based diet also has an effect on one’s mental state. According to a recent study published in the Nutritional Journal, mood states were improved after a group of omnivores changed from a meat-based diet to a plant-based diet. Meat produces more omega 6 fatty acid, which promotes changes in the brain and negatively disturbs mood. Omega 6 has been linked to clinical symptoms of depression. Omega 3, however, which is found in walnuts and flax seeds, has been linked to mood improvement and is instrumental in fighting mental disorders such as depression. The benefits of a vegetarian diet are too great to ignore. October offers many opportunities to celebrate the fall season. With Halloween and pumpkin carving being the most famous, other national observance days give us the opportunity to celebrate life in a more healthy way. Since October is National Vegetarian Awareness month, trying a vegetarian fare may not be a bad idea. It’s all about choice. Note: Consult your healthcare professional

before making any dietary changes. These articles and recipes are not intended to diagnose or treat any illness.

The Fitting That Was Heard Around the World

T

hirty years ago this

month, President Ronald Reagan made headlines when he appeared in public wearing Starkey INTRA hearing aids. As a powerful world influencer and one of the first public figures to be fitted with a hearing aid, President Reagan increased the acceptance of hearing devices and marked a monumental turning point in the hearing industry. Bill Austin, Founder of Starkey Hearing Foundation and Founder and CEO of Starkey Joe Simpson Hearing Technologies, had a front row seat to the momentous event. Having fit the President of the United States, Starkey Hearing Technologies’ business doubled overnight and then again two weeks later, changing the company’s trajectory and

moving custom hearing aids into the spotlight. We have never looked back. Thirty years later, we continue to provide lifechanging innovations and technology to people around the world. As an advocate for those with hearing loss, President Reagan sparked a movement focused on reducing the stigma of wearing hearing devices and advancing accessibility in the industry. Our goal at Audibel Hearing Aid Center is the same – to provide every person who needs hearing help with the best technology available. Just as Ronald Reagan sought out help to improve his life, we at Audibel would like to enhance yours in the same way. For more information, call 865-566-0370 or visit www.tn.audibel.com.

Creating the Best Hearing Aids Possible: The Audibel* Difference As a world leader in hearing innovation, Audibel has helped millions of patients experience more with never-before-seen hearing aid

technologies. It was Audibel that first made A DIVISION OF hearing aids virtually feedback-free. It was Audibel that created the industry’s first in-canal hearing aid and the first custom, digital, and fully programmable invisible hearing aid. It was Audibel that first utilized nanotechnology in hearing aids, brought touch technology to hearing aids, made hearing aids waterproof, and began tackling the biggest challenge wearers have historically faced – hearing in noise. It is Audibel that never stops working on the next breakthrough. From the technicians in their labs to the scientists, audiological researchers, and thought leaders at their state-of-the-art Audibel Hearing Research Center, they put innovation in action every day.

Educational and Behavioral Solutions for Back-to-School Success Back-to - school time is stressful for

all families and children, especially those with learning and behavioral difficulties. Academic, learning, and behavioral difficulties in the classroom that may have gone unnoticed in the summer are starting to show again this year, and teachers and parents are taking notice. If your child is having educational difficulties, let us help. We offer comprehensive behavioral and learning evaluations and testing to determine the causes of your child’s difficulties in the classroom, including evaluations for ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, intellectual disabilities, learning problems, and other conditions that affect an individual’s academic success. Having the knowledge of why your child is not doing well is the beginning of a successful road to treatment that empowers parents and informs practitioners to make the best treatment options available. In addition to comprehensive psychological testing and assessment, we also offer academic intervention for struggling readers. Our scientifically based and research backed interventions have proven successful for many learning difficulties. Our academic interventions are different than traditional tutoring in that we do not address your child’s weakness in a particular subject area, but our Educational Psychologist works on the core deficits of reading that will improve your child’s skills in all academic areas that require good reading skills. As the interventions are proceeding, we monitor the process of your child’s growth and track their progress over time. This allows us to work together to either continue with the intervention currently in place or make adjustments as needed. Whether your child has a learning disability or is just behind their classmates, our interventions can help improve their skills. The back-to-school season is a great time to begin interventions to start your child on the road to success. Whether your child is already suffering from a learning disability or you suspect your child may have a learning problem, we can help identify their difficulties and start intervening. At Family Psychology Group, our psychologists can assess and intervene. To schedule an appointment with our psychologists, call 865-247-4055 or visit www.familypsychologygroup.com.

Webb’s new Upper School “Courtyard of Sparta” contains an outdoor classroom and ample gathering space for social interaction and/or quiet reflection and study.

Four projects highlight this latest stage of development. The centerpiece is a 35,000-square-foot multipurpose building that will house a K-12 dance studio, a new robotics center, a broadcast journalism set/classroom, and additional classes for world languages and music. It will also hold a new gym used for Lower School P.E. and athletic teams. The second project is an enhancement to the Upper School, including a new front entrance, an expanded weight training facility, and additional study space. The third undertaking is an outdoor pavilion near Webb’s Lower School, which will enable Lower School classes to be held outside and provide sheltered space for social/recreational interaction. The fourth project is a courtyard centered within our Upper School. It contains an outdoor classroom and gathering space for social interaction and/or quiet reflection and study. Its feature attraction is an eight-foot-high Spartan (the school mascot) crafted from scrap iron, stainless steel, and copper. This project is complete. Exceptional facilities are not a prerequisite for a quality education, but being able to learn on a campus designed to inspire one’s best is an advantage for any student, and having specific facilities to support specific activities is important. Webb takes great pride in the work of our students and faculty, and we invest in and design our facilities to best ensure that their work is supported.

Principal of Carter Elementary School

The new Carter Elementary School has opened its doors for its first school year, and leading the way is its principal, Shay Siler. “Car te r Elementary

School has a history of strong, effective leadership,” said Shay. “It is an honor and privilege to work beside the dedicated teachers and staff who are committed to providing a quality education to our students. Their reflective and effective practices encourage each of us to be our best for our school family and for the students of Carter Elementary School.” Shay has worked in education for 17 years. In that time, she’s been a classroom teacher, a curriculum coordinator, and an administrator. Her career has taken her to Charleston, SC; Monroe, NC;

and Knoxville. “A typical school day includes greeting students each morning in the car rider area, visiting classrooms, meeting with teachers to discuss data that drives instruction and practices that engage learners, assisting in the lunchroom, attending various curriculum meetings throughout the day, aligning resources to the needs of the school, teaching and learning, and assisting with the dismissal in the afternoon,” she said. Although her days are jam-packed, Shay rises to the challenges that face her every day. “Change is constant and everpresent in education,” she said. “Accountability is a strong component in education during the past few years. Teaching and learning is a reciprocal process that we commit to each day as educators. Like our students, educators continue to grow professionally and learn innovative ways to engage our students in a learning environment that is nurturing and academically challenging.” Shay earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the College of Charleston. She also earned master’s and Ed.S. degrees from the University of Tennessee. “The greatest benefits and joys of being an educator are working with students and having an active role in the learning and growing each school year,” she said. “It is inspiring to observe students interact with each other and collaborate on topics to foster their own understanding and mastery of skills.” The new Carter Elementary School is located at 8455 Strawberry Plains Pike.

Creek Medical Center who is using James said he noticed a big an unconventional procedure – a difference several days after shot of basic alcohol to the heart – to the procedure, and during improve blood flow in patients sufhis recent post-op visit, Dr. fering from hypertrophic myopathy. Mehta showed him how his This condition causes a thickening heart is now functioning and stiffness of the septum, which normally. Ravi Mehta, MD divides the walls of the heart. The result is an obstruction of proper blood flow in and out of the heart, which causes the symptoms James was experiencing. “The procedure, called Alcohol Septal Ablation, is an effective, non-surgical alternative to conventional surgical treatment of hypertrophic myopathy, or when medications have not proven effective,” said Dr. Mehta. “Patients have fewer complications and recover much more quickly.” Alcohol Septal Ablation works by inserting a small catheter tube into the artery of the right leg. It’s pushed up slowly into the heart and into the obstructed artery. A small amount of pure alcohol is released into this area during a span of five minutes, blocking the outflow with a tiny balloon that is controlled by the catheter. The alcohol relaxes and deadens the area of obstruction without having to surgically go in and cut out the muscle. “What the alcohol actually does is cause a heart attack in a specified area of the heart,” said Dr. Mehta. “This causes damage and deadening to that area. After a short time, due to the damage, the obstructed area will actually thin out. Technically this is just a controlled heart attack.” During the procedure patients might feel some chest pain and rapid heartbeat. There is also a chance of needing a pacemaker or defibrillator once the procedure is done due to weakening in a portion of the heart muscle. However, this is the same risk as with open heart surgery. The first Alcohol Ablation procedure was performed overseas in Great Britain in 1994.

“I’m so glad I had this procedure; it’s truly incredible,” said James. “Now I can walk normal distances, and I feel great. I just wish I’d had it done earlier as it has been life-changing for me.”

Lisette Week October 21 through 26 We’re loving the fabulous Lisette pants! Oprah is endorsing Lisette on the cover of her October issue where she’s seen wearing the new red ones!

Many of you have already been introduced to and are enjoying the benefits of Lisette pants, but we feel they’re worthy of mentioning again. When wearing Lisette, you really can

have it all… just enough stretch to give a smooth, beautiful silhouette, slimming the abs, contouring the hips, and shaping the behind with no bulk from either the zipper or pockets. Many styles are available to choose from… the extremely popular ankle pant, the full-length (in either slim or boot cut) and in 28”, 31”, and 33” inseam! The 28” ankle is a perfect petite fit as a long pant. Also, you’ll find many new color choices for fall – red, camel, chocolate, and charcoal, as well as the number one, black, plus their signature prints! To encourage you to try this unusual pant line, we will be celebrating “Lisette

Lisette Limoges and daughter, Kathryne

10th Annual

Festival of History, Harvest and Heritage

Week” October 21-26 when, just for trying on a pair, you may register for a free pair to be given away on Wednesday and again on Saturday. There will be free Lisette tote bags for everyone! Lisette has previously been endorsed by Kathie Lee on The Today Show; her plane arrived in Florida without her luggage, so she bought Lisette at a boutique there and had to wear it for three days. The slacks did not get “rump or knee sprung,” so she endorsed it as one of her favorite things! Let us introduce you to Lisette October 21-26, where it’s sure to become one of your favorite things, too!

Autumn Discoveries There’s no other way to say it – I love

autumn! Cooler evening temperatures give way to a season of explosive colors that inspire floral designers like me. At Sweetwater Flower Shop in historic downtown Sweetwater, you’ll discover hundreds of fall-inspired wreaths and florals that I’ve only recently created to help you transition your home from summer to autumn. These new creations offer a three-dimensional depth uncommon in many similar florals and are perfect to help accessorize your fireplace mantel, dining room table, entry door, coffee and end tables, side table – you name it – for fall. You’ll also discover new shipments of jewelry, scarves, handbags, and women’s accessories that will help you accessorize your fall wardrobe. I encourage you to visit us online or call us to take advantage of our very popular scarf tying lunches held upstairs at The Mansion Restaurant. Enjoy The Mansion Restaurant’s varied menu of southern-inspired salads, sandwiches, and signature entrees as you enjoy a demonstration of different scarf tying techniques using our colorful array of newly a r r i ve d sca r ve s t h at will demonstrate their extraordinary versatility. The perfect complement to any woman’s wardrobe, our scarves can affordably add flexibility and depth to your favorite fall ensembles, from elegant to casual attire. You’ll also marvel at all of the new designerinspired jewelry pieces that are arriving daily from my recent trip to the Atlanta market. Our quality jewelry selections offer very affordable alternatives to similar jewelry that costs significantly more at area department stores. I think you’ll be truly amazed at the quality, selection, and pricing. If you’re like me and enjoy autumn as much as all of us here at Sweetwater Flower Shop do, I hope you will plan a trip to historic downtown Sweetwater to discover for yourself everything we have in store to help you enjoy this autumn to the fullest, whether for your home or for you personally. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month here

is

nothing fashionable about breast cancer. However, we are taking a break from talking about fashion for the month of October in honor of the clients and consignors we know personally who are facing this demon. Statistically speaking, breast cancer impacts one in eight American women every year. (It is the second most common cancer for women behind skin cancer.) Every year 40,000 women in the U.S. die from this disease. As a small business, we have the privilege to know our customers. Many we know by name. We are a local women’s consignment store; a woman-owned business with eight women employees. There isn’t one of us who doesn’t know or hasn’t known someone who has been diagnosed with breast cancer, is facing breast cancer, or died from breast cancer. Statistically,

it seems one of us will likely face this dreaded disease ourselves. While there are approximately 233,000 new cases in the U.S. each year, the death rates have been declining since 1989, largely due to increased awareness and earlier detection through screening. Today there are approximately three million breast cancer survivors in the U.S. At Next To New, we are taking a stand with our friends, families, clients, and consignors for the month of October to stamp out breast cancer. We will donate 5% of our sales for the month to The Thompson Cancer Survivor Center of Knoxville.

Mothers Smile ©

Tessa McGregor

I remember your brave face through all the pain, The day you told us and I tried to remain sane. "I have breast cancer," you said as a matter of fact, Yet you didn't shed a single tear you stayed intact. Throughout the radiation, chemo, and pill, You still smiled and had such a strong will. Your attitude is what carried you on, Without it I don't think that you would have lasted as long. The cancer ate at you like a starved disease, Killing your insides and slowly bringing you to your knees. But still through it all you held that smile, But sometimes I could see it faltered but only for awhile. I love you mommy with everything I have to offer and give, Maybe one day they can find a cure and help other people To still smile and live.

Celebrating and Honoring the Volunteer Spirit Last month, Random Acts of Flowers’ staff and board gathered together at the home of Jacqueline and Keith Holdbrooks for its annual “Vol-A-Bration.” Those in attendance came for good barbeque, drinks, and to celebrate and honor the many volunteers who make the local charity successful. Two volunteers were given special recognition for their exemplary service to the mission. The first award, the Glen Baxmann Award, was given to Donna Alexander for dedicating the most hours in service of RAF Knoxville’s charitable mission during the course of the last fiscal year. In contributing so much of her time, Donna most resembled the selfless attributes for which the award honors. An attendee of the American Floral Art Institute in Chicago, Glen continued to contribute his time and floral talents by designing and training other volunteers, all while courageously fighting his own battle with cancer. He lost his battle in March of this year, but his memory lives on in the volunteers

Bettie Kurtz, Rosie Bumpus Award recipient (left) and Donna Alexander, Glen Baxmann Award recipient (right)

who he trained and the many smiles he brought with his floral arrangements. The second award of the night was the Rosie Bumpus Award, given to Bettie Kurtz, who embodied the extraordinary volunteer spirit with whom the award was named. Given in honor of Rosie Bumpus, the award is the greatest recognition of someone who gives of themselves to others more than can possibly be expressed. Rosie battled Cystic Fibrosis for many years, and

even through all of her many treatments became one of Random Acts of Flowers’ greatest supporters. She was the first Random Acts of Flowers recipient to send a photo of themselves with their flowers, and she shared her “story” many times with local, regional, and national press. Rosie sadly passed away in June while awaiting a lung transplant, but her desire and commitment to spread joy to others is the very embodiment of the mission of Random Acts of Flowers. While these awards were special recognition, the many volunteers who were in attendance and those who were not deserve the greatest admiration. More than 200 volunteers consistently donate their time to source flower donations, repurpose flowers, and deliver arrangements to patients in area healthcare facilities – fulfilling the mission every week with exceptional kindness and compassion. The Art Market Gallery is a professional artists’ cooperative which has thrived in downtown Knoxville for more than 30 years. But, while our location on South Gay Street remains the same, repeat patrons tell us they are amazed by how different the interior of the Art Market Gallery appears to be every time they visit. Here’s why: Each month, members bring in work to replace what has sold. Existing pieces are moved within a newly reconfigured space to be displayed in a different, eye-catching way. And last but not least, a few times a year, an infusion of fresh talent enriches the gallery’s diverse offerings. These artists are juried in by a rotated panel of six members who assess applicants’ works for technical skill, design, artistic style and presentation. Five new members working in a variety of disciplines were juried in last year: The medium of choice for Loudon resident Linda Johnson is watercolor and her preferred subject matter children and flowers, handled with vibrant color and delicate lines. Kory Kiker of Greensboro, NC, “paints” with wood using a technique called intarsia in which individual pieces of wood in their natural colors are intricately wrought into a picture.

Sponsored by:

Joann Marie of Knoxville, a transplant from the West Coast, creates fine jewelry in sterling silver or 18k gold, studding many of her pieces with gems, and often using cat themes. Dennis Sabo of Loudon, a frequent workshop instructor, is an internationally honored photographer specializing in contemporary abstract, landscape, and seascape photography. Oak Ridge resident Ron Sullivan’s background of travel and studies of 18th and 19th century poetry and printmaking is reflected in his photographic cityscape images and collages. Besides the new members’ show in the front of the gallery, each month two gallery members have a featured exhibit and an opening reception during Knoxville’s First Friday Art Walks. This 10th anniversary of the downtown art walks is a wonderful time to see recent works by the October Featured Artists copper jeweler Kathy Bradley and watermedia and pastel painter Brenda Mills. The reception will be held from 5:30 to 9 p.m., Friday, Oct. 4, with live music by the Tennessee Valley Accidentals, and complimentary refreshments.

Supporting Second Harvest Food Bank’s Food for Kids Program

October 11 | 6-9 pm | Hunter Valley Farms 9111 Hunter Valley Lane, Knoxville, TN 37922 In a collaboratIve effort between Second Harvest Food Bank and area schools, the Food for Kids program provides kids with a backpack filled with kid-friendly food to take home after school or on the weekends. For many in the program, this may be the only food they receive all weekend. The number of children who need to enter the program is far outpacing the funding received by Second Harvest Food Bank. Finances are so short that the number of children being served will be limited to 50 of the neediest children per school.

Join the Marsh Professional Group, LLC and other generous sponsors in a festive evening of wine tasting, appetizers, music, and fun. It only takes $60 to fill a child’s backpack for an entire year, and our goal is to fund 100 backpacks. Help us make a difference in a child’s life – buy your tickets today, and invite your friends, too! Tickets cost $30/individual and $50/pair. Price of admission includes wine tasting, appetizers, music, and complimentary drink ticket. A silent auction table and cash bar will be available. For tickets, call 865-622-2162.

Planning Your Home with Kids in Mind Deciding to move is a family decision. Many kids are resistant to change. Will there be room for me? Will I need to get rid of my toys? Will I have friends in my new neighborhood? Magazines and websites display images of slides and climbing walls for children’s entertainment. These may be cool ideas, but they’re not practice or budget conscious projects. So what are some ideas on integrating your children into your home design plan? I ’m a l w a y s tripping over my children’s backpacks, lunch boxes, and shoes, and don’t even get me started on the sporting equipment! Create a “drop zone” with cubbies for each child with a shoe bin or pull-out drawers for ballerina slippers and baseball gloves. You can even cover the cubbies with a door or place them in the garage where they’re out of sight. Peg boards or cork boards can be mounted inside or on the door for school/sports calendars and birthday party invitations. A kitchenette refrigerator with slide-out drawers are ideal for a snack station. Fill them with healthy, pre-portioned snack options they can grab on the go. (If your kitchen isn’t large enough for a second refrigerator, use the lunch meat drawer.) Build in a slide-out stool so they can help you prepare dinner or, better yet, wash the dishes after! Creating space for your children isn’t just part of the Martha Stewart and Pinterest craze. Designating a place for them inside the home establishes order, creates a sense of safety and importance, and cultivates autonomy and creativity. Plus it’s less for us moms to pick up at the end of the day! Jenny Blalock

October in the Garden Hurray for October!

Hurray for cooler weather, bright autumn leaves, pumpkins, mums, and pansies! Hurray for bonfires, cider, carving pumpkins! Can you tell I’m happy to see fall coming? October is one of the best gardening months, so I have plenty to talk about. ›› The first thing you need to do is walk around and see what’s going on in your yard. I’m betting that a fair amount of you have some things that are dead or close to it. At this point in the lecture, let me make a confession: I killed an entire flower bed this summer. I was in such a funk after a close friend died that I didn’t even look at my flower beds for a month. By the time I did, the weeds were taller than me. I had to mow them all down, spray an herbicide on them, and start my landscape bed all over. I’m not saying this to be depressing; I’m saying this to reassure you that if you have a bed

or beds in your landscape that have gone to weeds, there are always second and third and twentieth chances! Fall is a great time for new beginnings. ›› With that in mind, October is generally the best month for planting (or re-planting, as the case may be) trees, shrubs, and perennials. Our soil temperature stays warm, and we usually get rain during the winter, so the plants have several months to get their roots established before it starts getting hot. ›› If you haven’t gotten your pansies planted, it’s not too late. Pansies can be planted now and will last all winter and on through spring. Don’t forget containers! Consider putting mums, cabbage, kale, mustard, or grasses in with pansies for interesting colors and textures. ›› If you’ve noticed that your yard is boring now that summer blooming flowers are done, add plants with fall and winter

appeal. Some trees, shrubs, and perennials are at their best this time of year. Burning bush and nandina turn fiery red, beautyberry and winterberry hollies put on clusters of berries, and fall annuals and perennials are showing off their blooms. ›› Fall is cleanup time! I have already seen several plants dropping leaves. If the leaves were unhealthy or if you have lots of them, you need to get them up. Otherwise, they can be shredded and used as mulch or compost. ›› Speaking of compost, this is a terrific time to add organic “stuff” to your flower beds. If you add it now, it has all winter to break down and add nutrients to your soil. When spring gets here, all those nutrients will be ready to make your plants grow. ›› Let’s talk about water. I know I got lazy because we didn’t have to water at all during the spring and early summer. One day I looked out and saw that my poor hydrangeas and azaleas were literally dying of thirst! If we’re not getting at least an inch of rain a week, you’ll need to water. This is especially true for those plants that you put in now. ›› While you’re overcome with your enthusiasm for gardening, resist the urge to prune. This isn’t a good time to do any cutting except to remove dead branches. ›› October is a great time to mulch. It’s nice and cool, and the mulch will help preserve moisture and stabilize ground temperatures during the winter. Don’t bury your plants! Three inches is enough. ›› You can never stop weeding. Get weeds out and do a new application of a pre-emergent to keep them from taking over your beds during the winter. ›› It’s time to start planting bulbs! Some people are intimidated by bulbs, but please don’t be. They are a terrific lesson in delayed gratification. Different bulbs have different requirements, so read the packaging for directions. ›› If you’ve been ignoring your bird feeders, it’s time to start filling them again. Make sure they’re clean, and buy a good quality food. Don’t forget the birdbaths either! Keep them full and clean as well. Glass and ceramic baths should be brought in before a freeze, but metal and plastic baths can stay out all year. We have several terrific workshops and events coming up, so stop by and see what’s new. We want to help you make your little corner of the world more beautiful.

Ladybugs like to crawl around on windows and

other light sources as the weather starts getting cooler. The fluid they emit will soil your curtains or furniture and may also aggravate allergy symptoms.

Box elder bugs will often gather on the south

side of homes where the sun hits and hide in small cracks and crevices before migrating inside to overwinter. They also emit a fluid that can stain draperies and other fabrics.

Kudzu bugs are small, olive green stink bugs that are NEW to this area. Their favorite foods are kudzu and soybeans. If crushed, they emit such a pungent smell that it can be nauseating. Brown marmorated stink bugs like to hideout within a home’s exterior siding. If squished, they emit a noxious odor similar to cilantro. The Fall Invaders treatment provided by Dayton’s Pest Control will eliminate ladybugs, box elder bugs, kudzu bugs, brown marmorated stink bugs, and a variety of other aggravating pests. New customers can take advantage of $25 off a Fall Invaders treatment or $25 off the initial service for a Quarterly Perimeter Pest Control treatment with an annual agreement. Are You Fully Enjoying Your Home’s Outdoor Living Spaces? If your home isn’t equipped with retractable screens, the answer is likely no. Why? Because flying and biting insects are probably keeping you indoors. But here’s a solution. While homeowners across the country are increasingly creating popular outdoor “rooms” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially made to be weather-proof, flying and biting insects often keep homeowners from using their new outdoor spaces. Retractable screens provide the perfect answer to these problems. By combining indoor and outdoor spaces, these innovative screen solutions enhance and promote our outdoor living experience. They provide shade and allow people to extend the time that they, family, and friends spend on patios while keeping annoying, biting insects at bay. Large, motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of a building, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. The best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish the views or your home’s esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, some of the retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. These retractable screens are available in different custom colors and wood grain finishes that help merge the screens with your interior or exterior color schemes. The screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and be connected to the general building automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection is called for. Five Years Strong and Still Giddy During the hustle of summer, with children running through my house, I tend to be more relaxed with cleaning.

B

y the end of summer,

my house feels a little dingier and needs some TLC before I feel comfortable inviting friends over for evening barbeques and weekend get-togethers. Enter the honey-do list. Luckily, this is one chore my husband, John, doesn’t mind tackling in our home. But, it wasn’t always so. Five years ago, before we began the deep cleaning business, John was a restaurant manager. One of his most frustrating challenges was getting the commercial kitchen and dining areas clean. I think he tried most every cleaning technique, product, and tool in the market, but those restaurant floors never succumbed to his efforts. The LAST thing he wanted to do when he got home was to even think about helping to scrub the kitchen floor.

tile & grout

So, in 2008, when John and I flew to Arizona to check out some innovative cleaning equipment, my husband was an “easy sell.” The equipment was amazing, and he still gets giddy from time to time when he encounters a floor that looks beyond help that he can transform into something beautiful. That first week we practiced in our own home, and I was astonished at how different my tile and grout floors looked. My carpet lightened several shades, and my driveway literally glowed in the dark. Many of our friends got free cleanings those first few weeks as well, and they were equally thrilled! Here’s what I’ve learned during the last five years. Every now and then, even the most well-cared for and well-maintained house needs an occasional deep cleaning – cleaning places that are not in a regular cleaning schedule or places that are hard to clean. Dirt and contaminants build up over time and cause beautiful tile and grout to discolor. Dirt becomes trapped within the pores of your floor and cannot be removed without some powerful measures. Surface Doc has some really cool

equipment that simply does what we can’t do on our own. With a combination of high heat, high pressure, and a powerful spinning brush, all contained under a pressure hood, your floors will have no choice but to release the soil and contami- Co-owner nants buried deep John within them. This Fitzwilliam process allows for the complete removal of years of build-up within your floor. If it’s time for your floors to look new again, please give John a call at 865-567-1986. He’ll be honored to give you a free in-home demonstration on your floors. You can also schedule a visit at www.SurfaceDoc.com.

ORIENTAL RUG WASHING SPECIALISTS

Free Entry Rug Cleaning (up to 3’x5’) with Rug Cleaning Order of $250 or More

At Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning, we take enormous pride in the quality of all the work we perform, whether we’re cleaning your home’s wall-to-wall carpeting or washing your Oriental rugs, but especially if we’re washing your valuable or heirloom quality Oriental rugs. Washing an Oriental rug, like the manufacturing of the rug itself, is an art. Like the craftsmen that created the rug, experienced technicians who wash rugs must consider the rug’s natural fibers (wool/silk), organic dyes, and construction when washing each rug. Washing an Oriental rug is not a job for anyone other than a trained and experienced technician.

After

I’ve invested nearly a quarter of a century learning and refining my skills and have sought the expertise of leading professionals in the Oriental rug industry, including one expert whose family has been weaving fine Oriental rugs for more than four generations. During the last decade, I have combined my firsthand experience with the priceless advice from these well-known and respected professionals to create an Oriental rug washing gallery here in Knoxville that applies this knowledge and uses a variety of proprietary processes, many of which I developed myself. The end result is a state-of-the-art, environmentally controlled gallery that uses our proven proprietary techniques that not only thoroughly cleans, but protects each rug we hand wash. I was reminded recently just how important the care each Oriental rug we wash receives at Superior. Upon returning a combination of silk and wool rug to a client, the customer, after raving about the quality of the work we performed, disclosed that the rug was valued at more than $25,000. I thought long and hard about that rug for many days after. Was I nervous? Perhaps at first. But then I realized that there was little to be nervous about, because at Superior, each Oriental rug we hand wash is treated as a priceless heirloom. Whether your rug is valued at $25,000 or you paid $25 for it, each piece is treated like your precious heirloom. Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning can give you that level of quality you expect and deserve.

Advantages of SingleStory Living Affordability and single-story design make the ranch style home one of the most prolific residential home designs in America, but today’s ranch house plans are anything but simple and plain. The latest designs come in all shapes and sizes to meet your needs, budget, and lifestyle. You can expect to discover flexible rooms, open kitchen, living, and dining areas, extended outdoor living spaces, tons of amenities, and simple, yet elegant exterior features to reflect various architectural styles. One-story homes offer more flexibility in the design of the interiors than multi-level homes, because a combined space can serve multiple functions. One-story living spaces allow for an interior design that has vaulted ceilings, dramatic windows, and the use of skylights to add a spacious feel. They almost always have an open living space that combines the dining room, living room, and kitchen to create a comfortable and cozy place for families to gather. One-story houses are also generally more efficient to heat and cool, saving you money and making you more comfortable year-round. Circulation in a onestory home is more fluid, because all the rooms flow into each other. One-story homes also do not require regular physical taxing use of steps and stairways, granting access to the entire home for those with limited mobility. Additionally, thoughtful layouts make households easier to maintain. For example, bedrooms are located close to the laundry facilities, greatly minimizing the work and time of transporting laundry loads to and fro. Kitchens are also located nearer to the bedrooms than other general spaces with immediate access to the garage. Ultimately, a one-story house is more convenient. With a two-story house, you inevitably want what’s on the other floor. Having a one-story house makes it easier to keep an eye on children,

and noise is less of a problem when there’s no one overhead. If you need to make changes down the road, having an open, flexible floor plan will make that an easy and affordable remodel. It is undeniable that many homeowners building their new dream home are looking for a long-term place to settle, and what good is space if it becomes too difficult to access? Many people are looking to the future, building dream homes in which they can live for the remainder of their lives. These people want enough space they can access independently. Typically no one puts in the time and effort to build a home they will only occupy for a short period of time. Keeping this in mind, it’s important to consider that there is a trend forming in dream home construction – the one-story home is gaining rapid popularity not just for baby boomers, but for all generations. There are a great many things to consider when building; however, builder Jenny Blalock’s specialty is helping to take the

stress out of the process and making your dream home a reality. At Luxe Homes & Design, they style your home Jenny Blalock General a r o u n d y o u r Licensed Contractor life. They work closely with you to decide which floor plan is right for you, your family, and your lifestyle. They help you discover what design will work best to create the home of your dreams. You see them everywhere, but are they really a legitimate discount? I’ll admit that I’m always looking for a good

sale before I will buy just about anything, including the paint stores. I want the best price available and love a good bargain just like most folks. “$1 over invoice” “$100 off for any job over $500” Sounds great, but then you read the small print that tells you that the “coupon must be presented at time of estimate.” Is that really a discount? A true discount comes after the estimate is given; otherwise, I have always felt the discount was merely added in before the estimate was given. For all NEW jobs during the months of October and November, simply ask for a 10% discount off all labor AFTER you get the written estiJohn Carver mate. That is a true discount. Everything Knoxville has really given us our broadest platform yet where new and existing customers are connecting. Some clients simply did not know where to find us from years ago. Every month I hear from people who have seen our ads. Even if they are not looking to get an estimate, they know where to look. Call us to look at your next painting project, inside or out. Get our estimate, and then ask for our true discount. I will certainly know then where you found us.

Five Easy Ways to Refresh Your Home One of the questions I get asked most often is how to make a change without breaking the bank. Well, my reply is often the same. Here are some tips: » A fresh paint color. » New decorative pillows on a sofa or bed. » New bedding and draperies in a bedroom. » Thinking of changing a sofa? A neutral one is

often your best bet. » Area rugs – some even have two sides that simply

flip over for an entire new look! I’d love to come to you with ideas for your fresh start! A free consultation is always available. So, let’s get those pencils sharpened and get started! Say Hello to Endless Hot Showers

D

id you know that nighttime temperatures in October only average 40 degrees? While cooler temperatures bring welcomed relief to the often oppressive summertime heat, you’ll soon remember how last year’s dream of a long, hot morning shower was interrupted by hot water turning warm and then cold. The problem is your water heater. Conventional water heaters only heat a limited supply of water. Once exhausted, it could easily take an hour or more to reheat a new supply of hot water. Here’s something else to consider. All of that unused water that goes down the drain while you wait for your water to heat up is costing you big time. In fact, for every $100 Jamie Foster, in water you waste Owner needlessly, your water utility charges you an additional $300 in sewage fees. That’s $400 down the drain. The solution is a tankless, on-demand water heater that not only provides an instant and unlimited supply of hot water, but only heats the water required. Conventional water heaters heat, and then continue to reheat, hot water. And with as much as 30% of your home’s energy budget going toward your water heater, tankless, on-demand water heaters just make good sense, and good cents. Welcomed cooler months are already here, but so is that unexpected cold shower. One call to My Plumber can ensure that you’ll have an unlimited supply of hot water this winter, not to mention a much needed decrease in energy consumption, while reducing both your monthly water and sewer bills, with your home’s new tankless, on-demand water heater. Call today! My Plumber, Inc.

The Unseen Enemy of Your Home What is encapsulation, and why would you want your home encapsulated? That’s a very good question, and here are some facts for you to consider. Water is the number one problem confronting homeowners and builders today. One of the most common ways for moisture to enter your home is through the crawlspace, where more than 50% of the air in your home’s living space comes from. Because some homes with crawlspaces experience standing or pooling water, you often need to install a waterproofing drainage system to eliminate it. Even if you don’t observe pooling water in your crawlspace, if your home doesn’t have an encapsulation system, it remains susceptible to excessive atmospheric moisture. That same excessive moisture can result in musty odors; sagging insulation; cupping, warped, or creaking floors; microbial growth such as mold, mildew, fungus, and algae; and also rotted or weakened floor joists and other forms of wood decay. An encapsulated home by H2Out Waterproofing will provide you with a clean, dry, and healthy space beneath your home. The advantages of an H2Out encapsulated home are: » Reduction of musty odors » Protection from wood decay » Improvement of indoor air quality » Reduction of soil gases into your living space » Creation of a clean, dry, sanitary, usable storage area » Protection of your floor joist system » Protection from hardwood flooring cupping

and warping

» Lowers humidity levels in your home » Elimination of the ideal conditions for

microbial growth H2Out Waterproofing is uniquely equipped to address your home’s moisture or water-related problems. As a licensed general contractor in East Tennessee, I have observed firsthand the devastating effects water has on a home. That’s why I decided to launch my own company to offer a comprehensive approach to helping families across East Tennessee. The knowledge and experience I have gained from my years as a licensed general contractor will provide you with the confidence that your home will be handled with the greatest of care. H2Out provides a solution that’s tailor-designed for your home rather than a one-size-fits-all approach all too common in the waterproofing industry today. Call H2Out Waterproofing today to set up your appointment with me to evaluate the health of your home. Get it out… Keep it out… H2Out!

Fall Plant Sale for October 12 Fall is the ideal time to add plants to the landscape, so the University of Tennessee Arboretum Society invites the public to its Fall Plant Sale, which will be held Saturday, October 12, from 9 am to 3 pm at the UT Arboretum, located at 901 S. Illinois Avenue in Oak Ridge.

T

he season’s milder tem-

peratures and more dependable rainfall, as well as the fact that during fall plants devote their resources to developing a stronger root system rather than putting energy into their top growth, means now is a great time to purchase and install plants in the landscape. Fall-planted specimens often get a head start toward spring growth and exhibit a much better survival rate. Beaver Creek Nursery, East Fork Nursery, Riverdale Nursery, Sunlight Gardens, as well as UT Arboretum Society members and friends will be offering quality plants for sale.

Dr. Will Witte, the Society’s “Answer Man,” will be there to answer plant-related questions. Dano’s Hot Dogs will also be at the sale. Proceeds from this sale and other society events go to support and secure the future of the UT Arboretum. The UT Arboretum Society is a 45-year-old non-profit organization dedicated to furthering the objectives and programs of the UT Forest Resources AgResearch and Education Center’s 250-acre arboretum. For more information, visit www.utarboretumsociety.org. The UT Arboretum and the Forest Resources AgResearch and Education Center are outdoor demonstrations and laboratories operated by UT AgResearch, a division of the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture. In addition to its agricultural research programs, the UT Institute of Agriculture also provides instruction, research, and public service through the UT College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, the UT College of Veterinary Medicine, and UT Extension offices in every county in the state.

BOO! Trick or Treaters May Be Scary

Y

our pets can not dif-

ferentiate Halloween from any other day of the year. Trick or treaters who are “cute” in your mind may be perceived as intruders to your pet. The chaos that accompanies celebrating Halloween, such as costumes, may even cause a great natured dog to be nervous, irritable, and possibly snapping. Naturally protective breeds may mistake jovial, good fun as a genuine threat. Most dogs are happier in the quiet comfort of their home. Do not leave your dog in the

backyard; there have been reports of taunting, feeding, agitating, and even poisoning on Halloween. A nervous dog will also bark and howl at the constant foot traffic. One half hour prior to trick-or-treat time put your dog in a secure, quiet place in your home as far away from the greeting door as possible. Depending on the dog, you may crate him. Candy is NOT intended for pets. Chocolate can be especially dangerous as well as candy wrappers. If your pet consumes wrappers, it can cause intestinal blockage that can lead to surgery having to be performed to save their life. Keep all candy OUT of reach of your pets! To avoid placing your pet in harm’s way during Halloween, provide him/her a party of its own by making overnight reservations at Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits. Call 865-986-6325 for reservations.

That means that all cleaning solvents used in our new dry cleaning process not only meets current statutory environmental regulations, but goes beyond these regulations.

The solvents we use are: • Non-toxic • Non-hazardous • Biodegradable • Dermatologically harmless • Odorless

Another significant benefit of this breakthrough technology is that it requires far less energy than conventional dry cleaning systems. In today’s current economic environment, entrepreneurs must weigh very carefully just how and where to invest their limited capital. But I can share with all of you that my decision was made easier when I considered my role as your neighbor, as a husband, and as a father. Each of us has an environmental responsibility to our community, and this decision is our commitment to the future. Fall Festivities at Marble Springs The year may be winding down, but Marble Springs State Historic Site still has a full calendar of fun activities and events going through the holiday season. Do you love hearing scary stories told around a fire? Or have you ever wanted to trick or treat at a historic site? Or maybe you want to show off your costume and try to win a great prize? If you’ve answered “yes” to any of these, be sure to visit the site on October 26 from 3 to 7 pm for Halloween Haunts and Haints. Maybe you want to learn how food was cooked over an open fire? Marble Springs will be hosting an open hearth cooking workshop on November 2 at 10 am. Participants will learn how to make desserts just in time for the holiday season and get to enjoy the tasty treats at the end of the workshop. Space is limited to 10 participants. Maybe you are more interested in turning your eyes towards the skies? Join in the celestial experience on November 9 at 7 pm. The lecture topic will be “Mysteries of the Moon.” Then again, you might feel like enjoying music, good food, and fun at the inaugural Sevier Soirée on November 23 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Other activities for this event include a bonfire, open hearth cooking, and a silent auction. Music will be provided by Red Shoes and Rosin. But with the holidays coming soon, maybe Photographs courtesy of East Tennessee History Center

you’d rather learn how to make beeswax candles over an open hearth like they would have back in the early 19th century. This popular workshop takes place on December 7 at 11 am. Of course, with the holidays just around the corner, maybe you would rather experience the historic site in a candlelit setting? Fresh greenery, music, open hearth cooking, baked goods, and warm drinks will round out the holiday experience. All activities take place at the Marble Springs State Historic Site, located in South Knoxville at 1220 West Governor John Sevier Highway. Marble Springs is open to the public from 10 am to 5 pm on Wednesdays through Saturdays and 12 to

Marble Springs is funded under an agreement with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, Tennessee Historical Commission, and supplemented by additional funds raised by the Governor John Sevier Memorial Association. Marble Springs was the home of John Sevier, Tennessee’s first governor. He moved to Knoxville shortly after Tennessee became an official state. He owned more than 300 acres in South Knoxville during his time as Tennessee governor, state senator, and U.S. Representative. The state purchased more than 30 acres of the property in the 1940s, and the site has been open to the public since the 1960s. The Governor John Sevier Memorial Association manages the site and programming for Marble Springs. The nonprofit organization also offers tours of the historic structures, and the site includes hiking trails, an arboretum, and a Certified Wildlife Habitat for the public to enjoy.

Each month contributors from the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance (ETPA) write an article for Everything Knoxville celebrating the rich heritage of our region. TRAVEL TENNESSEE :

Explore Scenic Byways and Fall Foliage Cherohala Skyway States: North Carolina and Tennessee National Forest: Nantahala National Forest, Cherokee National Forest Length: 43.0 mi / 69.1 km Time to Allow: Two hours to drive the byway

hat better

way to enjoy the glorious fall colors of Tennessee and North Carolina than a leisurely drive along the Cherohala Skyway? Take this scenic byway through the Cherokee and Nantahala National Forests in autumn, and fall in love with the brilliant colors of the Appalachian Mountains. To see autumn’s colors at their peak, plan your trip around the end of October or early November. You’ll be astounded by fiery oranges, deep reds, and glowing yellows of more than 120 species of trees native to the area. Notice how the autumn sunlight dances off the light-hued wood of the poplar aspen and its luminescent, quaking leaves. Smell the crisp air; it may be laced with a hint of wintergreen from the aromatic yellow birch, easily recognized by its golden yellow bark.

Colorful Forests

Drive a couple miles

north from the eastern terminus of the byway in Santeetlah Gap, NC, and you’ll find the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest. This 3,800-acre forest is home to the largest stand of old-growth trees in the eastern United States. The forest was dedicated to the poet, Joyce Kilmer, famous for his poem, “Trees.” His famous line reads: I think that I shall never see a poem lovely as a tree. The line is especially poignant 70

when you take in this beautiful land and trees in their shimmering autumn glory. Come hike among the red oak, and take in the earthy smells of the forest just before it descends into winter. Get back on the byway and continue your drive through Nantahala National Forest. Full of plunging gorges and towering eastern

hemlock, an evergreen that lives more than 500 years, the Nantahala National Forest will leave you with a deep sense of peace and tranquility as you roam the landscape, taking in the region's dazzling colors and skyscraping mountains. Continue west along the byway into Tennessee, where you enter the Cherokee National Forest. A 145,380-acre wilderness, this national forest is known mostly for its whitewater rivers and abundance of waterfalls. Stop and have a picnic in the crisp fall air, and hike around the forest to see the dogwood trees turning crimson and purple or the maple leaves changing to their brilliant red. Want to take a stunning side trip? Take the byway further west into Tennessee, then near Tellico River turn southeast and drive six miles along River Road, passing the historic Tellico Ranger Station on the way, until you reach Bald River Falls. The falls will enchant you during the autumn season as the water rushes by, carrying leaves from a black or rose cherry tree over time-smoothed stones. Come back in the winter to see Bald River Falls when it is covered in ice – a true winter wonderland. As the sun sets on the south, leaves will dance and their colors will sing, truly embodying those famed words: I think that I shall never see a poem lovely as a tree. Take a drive on Cherohala Skyway and bask in the colorful splendor of autumn. For up-to-date fall foliage and byway information, visit www. cherohala.org. Photo courtesy of the State of Tennessee

had decided to hope for the best and rely on the money she had saved. Sound familiar? It is definitely a familiar refrain in my office. Ah, I thought, I had found her missing puzzle piece! I was glad to explain that there is an alternative to traditional long-term care insurance that does not require monthly premiums – a concept called asset-based long-term care. You simply reallocate a portion of your existing assets into an investment that provides a multiplier effect of long-term care benefits, should you need care. If you never need long-term care, your investment either passes to your heirs, or you can cancel the policy and get your money back. It’s as simple as that. In her case, reallocating $50,000 provided her with $249,000 in tax-free long-term care benefits and a $72,000 death benefit if she never used it. Plus she had the choice to simply cancel the policy and get a return of her investment if she changed her mind in later years. Easy, yet powerful, right? But still, it’s human nature to procrastinate. I could fill this article with stories of clients who never thought of long-term care protection until they needed it but no longer qualified because of ill health. Or stories of adult children asking me about the tax consequences of selling their parent’s house to pay for long-term care. Or stories about both of my own grandparents using up every asset they owned to pay for skilled care before being forced to turn to Medicaid, thus losing their ability to choose where they would reside. It is today’s reality, yet so easily solved. Having a plan in place to protect you, your spouse, and your financial legacy from the cost of an unexpected health event or elder care is priceless. It provides you peace of mind now and choice of care later, and you needn’t burden your extended family members with your physical care or financial assistance in later years. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss your “financial puzzle” and fill in any missing pieces. Simply call me at 865-622-2162 to schedule a complimentary conversation today.

Business

Turnabout? I experienced an unusual turn of events recently that was rather notable. I had a bank, a large regional bank, asking if perhaps I was considering any future borrowing to finance a potential business expansion.

To set the record straight, we’re not considering any expansion that would require financing. Nonetheless, this particular bank is somewhat perplexed, as they and many of their competitors don’t seem to be participating in the economic recovery, at least as it relates to small business lending. This was a strange turn of events from just a few short years ago when financing was largely unavailable to small businesses. In fact, many banks “called in” loans from a variety of small businesses, a decision that severely jeopardized their existing operations, and in some instances caused the failure, or near failure, of

many of these same businesses. One of the great pleasures I derive from my publishing career is my ability to interact with hundreds of small businesses on a regular basis. You listen to their stories, share in their successes, and, sadly, experience firsthand an occasional failure. In our three decades as small business owners, we have navigated a number of recessions but none as devastating as the most recent one. One thing is for certain few of the business owners I visit with on a regular basis will forget the lessons of this recession, the largest since the Great Depression, anytime soon. During the last several years, small businesses have consolidated, eliminated marginal products and services, trimmed staff, improved productivity, and paid down debt. Today we manage more streamlined versions of our former businesses and have little appetite for any expansion requiring financing. Add to this the economic

uncertainty moving forward and the lessons of the past, and what remains is a great many small business owners who have elected to avoid borrowing. What does the future hold? For the banks, I’d sugge s t fi n d i n g a n alternative use for their unproductive capital. Small business owners have an aversion to borrowing at the present time. The recent recession is fresh on their minds, as well as the many negative stories of banks refusing to help struggling small businesses, the same banks that were the recipients of $431 billion in bank bailout funds from American taxpayers, many of whom were the same small business owners whose requests for assistance went largely ignored.

s a jogger, when finished, I cherish every mile. Not because I enjoyed it, not because I’m good at it, but because I did it. T h a n k f u l l y, g o n e a r e the days of tripping the mileage counter in the car to check distances. Now apps track every trail and tell you exactly how far you’ve been. Recently I jogged a usual route with the same predictable distance as I had done many times before. However, somehow I must have hit the pause button, because the mileage was a good bit shorter at the finish than times before. It was disappointing to say the least, not to mention I was tired, hot, and mentally spent. Then I had to decide whether to trust my smartphone or my route. It was tough looking at the distance and seeing less than expected. I wrestled. Could I be wrong, did I forget a part of the route? Or did I accidentally hit the pause button? Deep down I had a hard time deciding what to do, and I was even tempted to go further just to “see” my accomplishment. Nonetheless, due to time constraints, I accepted the lesser mileage on

the app counter and trusted that I had done what I set out to do. Doubt is a powerful deterrent that mysteriously robs us of the feeling of accomplishment when we reach a goal. You may recognize the voice. “You could have done more. You could have gone further. What did she mean by that? When are you ever going to finish this project?” The list goes on, and if we don’t recognize the power of doubt, it can rob us of the celebration we’re due when we do well. The opposite of doubt is belief. If you want to doubt less, then believe more. Only you can make that transition for yourself.

1. Believe in yourself. It’s that simple. The biggest gap in life lies between knowing and doing. We know what to do; we just have to do it. You can if you will. 2. Set goals. What saved my jog that day was the fact that I had a goal and a route to get there. Nothing can take that sense of accomplishment when we set out to do something and do it. That means having goals and not stopping short of achievement. 3. Surround yourself with people

who are on the move. Successful

people inspire one another, so be intentional who you hang out with. Invest your time wisely and be with people you can learn from.

4. Know your “nots.” Don’t be

afraid of who you are not, what you are not good at, and where you don’t need to spend your time. If you try to be everything to everyone, then you and those closest to you are the ones who will pay the often painful penalty. 5. Today is your priority. While goals are terrific, you can only live one day at a time, so live it well. It doubt powerful? That depends on how you believe.

Relationships

by D e a nn a B r a n n, Ph.D.

Four Tips for Dealing with a Passive Aggressive Daughter-in-Law A person who is passive aggressive

in his or her behavior is difficult enough to deal with, but when that person is a family member, it is even worse. For mothers-in-law, dealing with a passive aggressive daughter-in-law can be tricky. Many times daughters-in-law show this behavior through comments they say to you that are hard to defend against, yet are hurtful and sting. More times than not, though, they use the malicious subterfuge of the undermining “accidental” oversights – not letting you know about special family events that are planned (and you find out after the fact) – or whenever you come around, she goes into the other room or never comes out of the other room when you show up. On top of all this, your daughter-in-law may shut down any chance for you to discuss what’s going on. She may say that nothing is wrong, she’s fine, put it back on

Etiquette

you in some way, or she may just set things up so she is not available to talk about it. So what can a mother-in-law do? The goal is to create a more balanced sense of power. By doing this you are in a place to create a significant change in your daughter-in-law, in yourself, and in your relationship with her. Here are some steps you can take to get you moving in the right direction.

1. Take a few emotional steps back –

Realize what she’s doing to you is not personal. She behaves this way with other people as well. 2. Be a role model – Instead of slinking away or showing your anger, help her see that having feelings are ok.

3. Acknowledge her feelings even when she won’t – By stating to her in a

calm, compassionate way what she’s feeling, you help her see that expressing feelings can be a good way to deepen and strengthen

a relationship.

4. Help her see you really do want to understand –

When you show her she matters enough to listen to her feelings you will start to shift the power and begin to create a better relationship. Take these steps to kindly, gently show your daughter-in-law that not everyone is the same – that you are different. Help her see that the two of you can have a relationship based on respect. Business Telephone Etiquette All businesses hopefully realize that

the way in which they answer the telephone and communicate with their customers on the telephone is their most important asset. How often have we as consumers decided in less than 10 seconds whether or not we were going to do business with a company or someone depending on how they answered the phone? It’s so important. The best way for me to discuss these skills in this particular platform is to list them out. However, if you’re interested in a much more detailed approach, please see my professional services page on my website. » Answer the phone by the third ring, expressing a welcome, identifying the company and then yourself. » Remember that customers can hear your mood and appreciation for the call by your voice, tone, speed of speech, and energy level. Smile – they can hear it in your voice. » Try to make sure there’s no background noise or distractions while speaking to the customer. You really can’t multi-task

74

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE October 2013

well when you’re talking on the phone to a customer. » If it’s not a good time for you to talk, then don’t answer the phone. » The person who initiates the call is the person who should initiate the end of the call. » Before discussing personal matters with a customer, verify that now is a good time for them to discuss such matters. » Never get too personal with a customer unless the customer is the one to initiate such comments or questions. » Never place a caller on hold without getting their permission to do so first, and never leave them on hold for more than 30 seconds without coming back to inform them of progress or possible further wait. » Always reply with a yes or no or perhaps a “let me check to see if he’s available” before asking the caller for their name after they have asked to speak to someone. » Ask the caller for their name and number before transferring them to another department or person in case the call is accidentally

lost. Inform them of who and where you’re transferring them to and why you are doing so. Give the name and direct number to the caller in case the call is accidentally lost. » Give needed information to the second customer service rep so the caller doesn’t have to repeat information already given. » Show customer appreciation for their call by thanking them, asking them if there’s any more you can help them with, and wishing them a wonderful day. These are just a few etiquette skills that go a long way in ensuring that our customers feel our appreciation for them and our commitment to excellence.

ULTRASOUND is Heating Things Up

n the medical field,

ultrasound has been used for diagnostic imaging purposes for many years. More recently, ultrasound has been turning up the heat in the field of aesthetic medicine. The power of ultrasound has been harnessed to perform non-invasive cosmetic procedures with some amazing results.

Two companies have brought ultrasound technology to the aesthetic marketplace. These are Solta with Liposonix and Ulthera with Ultherapy. Both Liposonix and Ultherapy use focused ultrasound technology to bypass the delicate upper layers of skin and target deeper tissues. Think of a magnifying glass’s ability to focus sunlight into an extremely high temperature point capable of burning. This is similar to how Liposonix and Ultherapy work. Southeastern Dermatology Consultants is proud to be the exclusive provider of these treatments in Knoxville. Using focused ultrasound to melt fat, Liposonix has been approved to treat the abdomen and flanks (love handles). The Liposonix treatment is ideal for active, healthy individuals who have at least 1 inch or 2.5 cm of fat to lose

in their abdomen or flanks. It is noninvasive, so it is a great solution if you have stubborn fat but don’t want to have surgery. The Liposonix treatment has 10 years of research and testing behind its development. It has a welldefined safety profile during and after treatment with very good patient satisfaction. With a single treatment we typically see patients lose between one and two inches from their waistline, and maximum improvement is seen after two to three months. Ultherapy is the only device that has received FDA approval for a noninvasive neck and brow lift. We use it to lift and tighten the skin of the face, neck, under the chin, along the jaw line, and on the brow. Ultherapy is able to do this by going deeper into the tissue than lasers and radio frequency without injuring the skin’s surface. Another factor that promotes safety and better results is that with Ultherapy we can visualize the targeted areas. Results will unfold during the course of two to three months with maximum improvement at six months. While these ultrasound technologies do not duplicate the results of traditional surgery, Liposonix and Ultherapy are inviting alternatives for those who are not yet ready or who are not candidates for surgery. Please call Southeastern Dermatology Consultants to schedule a complimentary consultation, and see if either of these procedures are a good option for you.
