Skinsense with Dianne Rathnow Veteran Skincare Consultant, Dianne Rathnow, recently joined The Lucas Center for Plastic Surgery where she will manage the skincare division. Everything Knoxville caught up with Dianne as she shared some insights into the world of skincare.

EK: Dianne, it’s great to hear you’ve joined the professionals at The Lucas Center for Plastic Surgery. What is your background? Dianne: I’ve been working as a skincare consultant in the world of aesthetics for the past 15 years under a highly reputable group of dermatologists. From anti-aging to assisting patients struggling with rosacea, acne, or sun damage, I enjoy providing solutions that improve the appearance and quality of my patients’ skin. I love it when they return for a follow-up visit, and I can see a marked improvement. EK: How will your role at The Lucas Center differ from your past experiences? Dianne: I’m really looking forward to working in a clinical environment. In addition to the range of services we currently offer, I will be focused on providing quality post-surgical skincare. I’ll be dedicated to helping skin to heal and prevent scarring as well as improving the overall appearance of post-surgery skin. EK: What is your favorite skincare line?

Dianne: At The Lucas Center, we offer primarily pharmaceutical grade skincare products that you can only get from a licensed physician. We just introduced SkinMedica®, and it’s the best skincare line I’ve ever utilized! The entire aesthetic product line is based on the science of the skin’s own healing abilities. The scientifically proven recovery compounds include essential ingredients ranging from vitamins C and E to retinol to TNS®, which is SkinMedica’s patented blend of growth factors, soluble collagen, antioxidants, and matrix proteins. We’re seeing fantastic results with SkinMedica®. EK: What is your beauty philosophy?

Dianne: A little daily skincare goes a long way! I’m a firm believer in customizing skincare regimens that work for my clients and encouraging them to spend 5-10 minutes a day on their skin. Your skin is your largest and most delicate organ and deserves your attention.

EK: Dr. Lucas, tell our readers what you mean by taking an artistic approach to cosmetic surgery. Dr. Lucas: I don’t take a one-size-fits-all, cookie-cutter approach to cosmetic procedures. Cosmetic surgery is a very personal decision, and people have different reasons and circumstances for choosing to make a change or improvement. There is no universal “standard of beauty,” so I focus on enhancing the patient’s best pre-existing features and consider everything from ethnic background to body shape to provide the best possible outcomes. EK: Let me jump ahead a bit because you have an exciting announcement. The Lucas Center has already earned a reputation for employing the latest in both procedures and technology, so tell us about the new VECTRA 3D Imaging System you now use, which is a first in Knoxville.

Dr. Lucas reviews VECTRA 3D images with a patient to select breast implants. EK: You are renowned for post-bariatric body contouring. Can you tell us about your work in that area?

Dr. Lucas: We use VECTRA 3D Imaging to show patients what they can expect from their surgery. The VECTRA 3D camera captures three-dimensional photos from different angles of the area(s) you would like to treat. These images are used to build a 3D model of you in our system. Then we can manipulate your 3D image to see how each surgical experience may affect your overall appearance. For example, if you are considering a breast augmentation, we can see how different sizes and shaped implants would look on your particular body. There are three implant manufacturers in the U.S., and this imaging software allows our patients to choose from all implant options approved by the FDA. We’ll then discuss your desired results, and I can use the 3D images as the basis for your surgical plan.

Dr. Lucas: Yes, I’m very passionate about helping people that have undergone massive weight loss from either surgery or lifestyle changes. Through body contouring, I can help them achieve a healthy body image. We’ve had many success stories with patients who have undergone bariatric surgery and lost 100 or more pounds. Prior to seeing me they have felt imprisoned in their own excessive skin. Through state-of-the-art body contouring procedures, I am able to give the patient back a body they can be proud of. This is achieved with lower body lifts and breast, arm, and leg rejuvenation procedures. My goal is to give patients that final burst of self-confidence they need to get on with their lives and live them to the fullest.

EK: Wow! That sounds like amazing technology. What other procedures can the VECTRA 3D help a patient understand and visualize how cosmetic surgery could improve their look?

Dr. Lucas: We have many patients who are seeking conservative body contouring procedures, and we’ve been thrilled with the VASERlipo® procedure. If you’ve struggled with body image and you’re larger than you want to be, then VASERlipo® may work for you. The VASERlipo® system has particular advantages over traditional liposuction techniques for the areas of back, arms, and sides. It is a minimally invasive liposuction technology that produces noticeable results in just one procedure. It’s powerful enough to eliminate substantial areas of fat but gentle enough to treat delicate areas such as the neck and arms.

Dr. Lucas: The VECTRA 3D Imaging System can be used for most of our cosmetic surgery procedures. Whether you are considering a facelift, rhinoplasty, breast augmentation, tummy tuck, or liposuction, our advanced imaging system will help you make the right choices for your body and eliminate the guesswork.

EK: What is one of your more popular services?

Facial rejuvenation is another popular area of our practice. As baby boomers age they want to look as young as they feel. The Lucas Center offers a variety of surgical and non-surgical rejuvenation procedures to fit individual lifestyles and budgets. EK: We’ve heard you’re very dedicated to Komen Knoxville. What is your role with that organization? Dr. Lucas: Well, I have a heart for the women that go through any type of cancer, particularly breast cancer, and we’ve performed hundreds of reconstructive surgeries. Previously, I served on the board of directors for the Susan G. Komen organization here in Knoxville, and we’ve been a sponsor of the Race for the Cure since 2006. I’m committed to helping raise awareness, encouraging women to take control of their breast health, and fighting for a cure through this organization. EK: It’s been a pleasure chatting with you, Dr. Lucas. Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers? Dr. Lucas: The message of my practice is one of hope. We offer a confidential, caring environment for patients to come explore the many options to achieve their desired results.

have increasingly become aware of the environmental impact we have on our world that we pass on to our children and children’s children. In the dry cleaning industry, we’ve been made aware of the potential impact we’ve had on our environment. More importantly, we’ve learned about new technological advances in both dry cleaning equipment and cleaning solutions that are not only environmentally friendly, but also produce superior cleaning results. But, as you might expect, these technological advances carry a steep price tag, which is often a barrier to many dry cleaning companies. After thorough research and much deliberation, I made the only decision that a long-time Knoxville native and father of four children could make. We’ve invested in the future. Knoxville’s future, my family’s future, and your family’s future. Just recently we installed the most state-of-theart dry cleaning equipment available anywhere in the world that is not only environmentally friendly, but also produces cleaning results which I am confident will please you. Our investment in our environment is our way of thanking Knoxvillians for nearly a half century of support. But our investment also underscores our commitment to our children to whom the future belongs. Once again, thank you for your half century of support and for your future support as we at Crown Cleaners continue to invest in all our futures.

H2OUT Waterproofing If your home or business’s basement, crawlspace, or foundation had a water problem, then this year’s excessive rainfall will likely have already made that abundantly clear. The question that remains, however, is what do you do about it? Moisture problems can wreak havoc on both your home and business’s structure as well as create a variety of health problems arising from mold, mildew, and more. Most homeowners or business owners, in searching for a solution, turn to either the Yellow Pages or online search engines. While there are a number of reputable waterproofing firms in the Knoxville area, not every company offers the same level of expertise, experience, or options. That’s why my husband, Scott, and I launched H2OUT Waterproofing. As a Tennessee licensed general contractor, and with experience working for several of the area’s best known names in the waterproofing industry, we decided to introduce an entirely new concept in home and business waterproofing. First, H2OUT Waterproofing employs no commissioned salespeople. That means you only pay for services we provide and not needless sales commissions that add to the cost of waterproofing. Second, H2OUT Waterproofing makes no recommendations until your home or business’s structure has been thoroughly evaluated and inspected by Scott, a Tennessee licensed general contractor. Our competitors may have good intentions, but a commissioned salesperson is no substitute for a knowledgeable, licensed contractor who can make an informed evaluation of your home or business.

Tate & Lyle Tour de Tellico aLLing all cyclists! The 8th annual “Tate & Lyle Tour de Tellico” will be held Saturday, September 28. The Tellico Lake Rotary Club is pleased to organize the 8th annual bicycling event that will benefit four local charities in Loudon and Monroe counties. The recipients of this year’s proceeds include the Boys and Girls Club of Loudon County, The Good Samaritan of Loudon County, Good Shepherd of Monroe County, and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. The 2013 Tate & Lyle Tour de Tellico will include a 100-mile “Century” ride for very experienced bicycle riders, a 100-kilometer “Metric Century” for seasoned cy-

clists, and less challenging 50-kilometer and 25-kilometer rides for families and entry level riders. A two-and-a-half mile fun “poker” walk will provide a scenic tour of Tellico Village neighborhoods. Participants by the hundreds come from across the southeast to be part of this annual event. TV personality, Olympic medalist, and fitness guru, Missy Kane, is a regular participant and helps promote the bicycling events. For more information or to register, visit www.tourdetellico.com.

Third, H2OUT Waterproofing offers a full range of waterproofing services, including crawlspace waterproofing and encapsulation, basement waterproofing, and foundation repair. We believe that your home or business’s water problem is unique, calling for a unique solution, not just the one-sizefits-all solution offered by many waterproofing companies. » No commissioned salespeople! » Tennessee licensed general contractor! » No one-size-fits-all solution! Do you have a water problem? Eliminate your water problems once and for all – guaranteed! Why trust your home to a commissioned salesperson who only offers a one-size-fits-all solution? Insist on H2OUT Waterproofing, and keep water out permanently.

The Right Beneficiary Presented by Ali Swofford

Who should inherit your IRA or Life Insurance? Here’s a simple financial question: who is the beneficiary of your IRA?

How about your 401(k), life insurance policy, or annuity? You may be able to answer quickly, or you may be saying, “You know… I’m not totally sure.” Whatever your answer, it’s smart to periodically review your beneficiary designations.

Your choices may need to change with the times. Was it in the 80s when you

first bought life insurance or opened your IRA? Have your priorities changed a bit? Over five or 10 years, some major changes can occur in your life – and they may warrant changes in your beneficiary decisions. In fact, you might want to review them annually. Here’s why: companies frequently change custodians when it comes to retirement plans and insurance policies. A beneficiary designation can get lost in the paper shuffle. If you don’t have a designated beneficiary, the assets may go to the “default” beneficiary.

How your choices affect your loved ones. Beneficiary designations commonly take

priority over bequests made in a will or living trust. For example, if you long ago named a son who is now estranged from you as the beneficiary of your life insurance policy, he is in line to receive the death benefit when you die, regardless of what your will states. Beneficiary designations allow life insurance proceeds to transfer automatically to heirs; these assets do not have go through probate.1,2 You may have chosen the “smartest financial mind” in your family as your beneficiary, thinking that he or she has the knowledge to carry out your financial wishes in the event of your death. But what if this person passes away before you do? What if you change your mind about the way you want your assets distributed and are unable to communicate your intentions in time? And what if he or she inherits tax problems as a result of receiving your assets?

Are your beneficiary designations up to date? Don’t assume. Don’t guess. Make

sure your assets are set to transfer to the people or institutions you prefer. Let’s check up and make sure your beneficiary choices make sense for the future. Just give me a call or send me an email – I’m happy to help you.

Dilemma: Staying with a Friend or Kennel Boarding? You think to yourself, “Our friend will

keep our dog at their house, and it’s free!” But what responsibility do you want to place on your friend? Just this past month, Linda, the owner of Anna, a Rat Terrier, allowed her best friend, Lisa, to care for Anna in Lisa’s home while Linda vacationed in California. Anna ran across the street while Lisa was in the driveway visiting with the next door neighbor. A car approached, hitting Anna. This possibility was never thought about or discussed when determining where Anna would stay while the family was on vacation. The situation ruined what should have been a wonderful vacation, and a friendship of many years has been tested and strained for all

members of both families. One of the greatest benefits of boarding at a professional facility is the security of the family pet. Double gates and doors, exit doors that pull in instead of pushing out, trained staff in dog handling, and surveillance systems are a few measures taken at Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits to ensure safety first. What is a friendship worth? What unknown strain is placed on your friends and family when they are responsible for your four-legged family members? Consider professional boarding when comfort and safety are your first priority. Call Ms. C’s for a tour, and discuss any concerns you may have when leaving your four-legged kids when you’re away from home.

City of Knoxville’s Safety City is Named Site of Fourth Annual Knoxville Walk to Defeat ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) East Tennesseans who are coping with

ALS and their supporters, friends, and families have an opportunity to strike a blow against the terminal neuromuscular disease, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Individuals and teams are encouraged to sign up now for the Fourth Annual Knoxville Walk to Defeat ALS, which will be held Saturday morning, September 14, at the City of Knoxville’s Safety City, 165 South Concord Street. During the past three years since the Knoxville Walk was founded, persons with ALS and their supporters rally together to generate a resounding battle cry against the disease that has forever changed life. Walkers can choose to walk in memory of a loved one whose life has been snuffed out by ALS. Since 2010, when a grassroots effort on the part of a few individuals sparked the first Walk in coordination with the Tennessee Chapter of the ALS Association (Nashville), more than $300,000 has been generated to directly help Tennessee families dealing with ALS with advocacy programs,

medical equipment, and the like. About 20% of the tax-deductible donations go to the ALS national headquarters to support its aggressive research program and awareness campaign. The ALS Association and its state chapters are 501(c)(3) tax-exempt; therefore, all donations are tax-deductible. Every 90 minutes, someone loses his/her life to ALS, and every 90 minutes, there is a new diagnosis. From diagnosis, the usual life expectancy is still only two to five years. That is why the Knoxville Walk is a torch of encouragement and real support for the cause of finding a cure and helping fellow Tennesseans with the disease. Individuals may create teams in support or in memory of someone with ALS by visiting www.alstn. org or by calling 1-877-216-5551. To register online, go to the website and click on the Knoxville Walk. Then either select the icon “Start a Team” or “Join a Team” and follow the prompts to complete registration. Registration for the Walk will begin at

9 am with plenty of entertainment for the family. The Walk, which begins at 10 am, will be wheelchair accessible, so all may participate. Safety City, a community service project of the Knoxville Police Department, is easily accessed. From I-40, exit at 386A toward Middlebrook Ave./University Ave. Merge onto 24th Street NW and Sutherland Ave. Turn left on Concord Street, and follow the red and white signs one-tenth of a mile to the Walk site. Sponsored by B97.5 Radio and other caring commercial patrons, a festive event is planned, with complimentary breakfast items and coffee, UT and youth cheerleading squads, clowns, balloons, and music galore. T-shirts will be awarded to individuals who raise $100 or more. This fall, the non-profit ALS Association’s Tennessee Chapter will also host Walks in Memphis, Nashville, and the Tri-Cities (Kingsport). For more information, contact Monika Hancock, Development Specialist, at 865-936-3296 or monika.hancock@alstn.org.

Sleep Help Recipes Quinoa Tabouli

The Beauty in Sleep As fall ushers in shorter days and lower temperatures, it’s time to finetune our health. Some indicators of good health are sound sleep, good appetite, and high levels of energy. Sleep is the main resource for health. This is the time that damaged cells get repaired and tissues re-grow. When it comes to boosting your immune system and creating vitality, sleep is a priority. A normal sleep cycle goes from light to deep sleep and then back to the lighter REM sleep. There are usually four sleep cycles per seven to eight hours of sleep. When these cycles get interrupted, cellular repair is hindered. Moreover, sleep deprivation causes your body to produce ghrelin – a hormone that tells you to eat more and to produce less of the hormone leptin, which signals the body to stop eating. According to a recent University of Chicago study, people that got only four hours of sleep were more likely to choose high carb, sugary, and starchy foods, which promote weight gain. Other negative implications to sleep derivation are decreases in melatonin, increases in estrogen, which have been shown to increase incidences of breast cancer, and an increase in cardiovascular disease. Chronic sleep loss has been shown to decrease thyroid function and increase the likelihood of diabetes, stress, and the incidence of high blood pressure. Getting a good night’s sleep has other advantages. Besides providing repair time, melatonin is released, which signals the body to shift from daytime activity mode to nighttime healing mode. Sleep improves performance and memory and

boosts the immune system. Sleep also releases growth hormone, which makes bones stronger, increases muscle mass, promotes the loss of body fat, increases protein synthesis, which stimulates optimal maintenance of internal organs, and supports the pancreas to make insulin. Clearly, sleep is of vital importance for maintaining optimal health. Foods are an important factor in the quality of our sleep. Scientists say that eating certain healthy foods calm the nervous system and triggers a sleep-inducing hormonal response, helping you to rest better at night. Foods that enhance sleep include cherries, which contain natural melatonin, jasmine rice, which has a high glycemic index, complex carbohydrates such as quinoa, barley, buckwheat, and brown rice, sweet potatoes, which contain complex carbohydrates and potassium, bananas, which contain magnesium and potassium, and turkey, which contains tryptophan – a sleep inducer. Other suggestions for better sleep include keeping your bedroom clean and free of clutter. Linens should be of good quality, and the room should be completely dark for the best sleep. Also, researchers have suggested that sleeping before midnight is extremely important for maximum benefit. Any hour of sleep before midnight equals two hours of sleep after midnight. Sleep should not be underestimated when it comes to our health. With all its benefits, sleep should be a priority to maintain tissue and cellular repair. Not only will you feel better, but you’ll look better, too. Our outside reflects our inside, so be sure to get your beauty sleep! Note: Consult your healthcare professional

before making any dietary changes. These articles and recipes are not intended to diagnose or treat any illness.

Don’t be shy –

We know you have a few more questions » What’s the difference

between a bikini and bikini Brazilian? When it comes to a bikini wax, the focus is to tame the unruly sides and leave a little or a lot on the front. Think of a bikini wax as “keeping things tidy.” For a bikini Brazilian, you can go completely bare if you dare. They’ll leave a strip or nothing on the front, then remove all the hair on your sides, derriere, and everything in between.

» How long is long enough

for my hair to get waxed? Let the hair grow to about 1/4 inch so the wax can grab the hair.

» How long will my wax last? Usually a wax will last between three to four weeks, but everyone’s rate of re-growth is different.

» What products do you

offer? Boost your beauty with our vitamin-packed products. Not only are they divine for your skin, but our products ensure your next wax is less painful and lasts longer. From the Ingrown Hair Serum and the Slow IT body wash/lotion to the brow Shape IT and Restore IT, your skin and your brows will never look better.

The Art Market Gallery

Open its glass doors and you never

know what you’re going to find within the inviting downtown space of the Art Market Gallery. This cooperative is an always-changing treasure trove with one-of-a-kind, yet affordable, fine art and craft. With September an unofficial start of the holiday shopping season, what better place to start than here for a gift of high-quality original art? The gallery, a few doors from Mast General Store, now has Friday evening hours until 9 pm, when street and nearby garage parking are free. In addition to a new show by artists, each month two gallery members have a featured exhibit and an opening reception during Knoxville’s First Friday Art Walks. For September, painter Nelson Ziegler of Sevierville and clay artist Karen Kyte of Seymour will present recent works. This month’s reception will be held from 5:30 to 9 pm on Friday, September 6, with live music by Sunshine Station and complimentary refreshments. Ziegler’s oil and watercolor paintings are in private and corporate collections nationwide. His work has been in many notable national juried exhibitions, among them the National Arts Club, Salmagundi Club, Allied Artists, Faces of America National Watercolor Portrait Show, the Copley Society, and the Tennessee Watercolor Society. His many national and regional awards include Gold Medal for watercolor at the American Artist Professional League and Honorable Mention in The Artist’s Magazine annual competition. Kyte’s educational goal had been a practical one – to study medical technology until she took an undergraduate painting class. “Liver flukes lost their glamour, replaced by my real passion, mudpies,” she says, and she graduated with a B.F.A. instead. Her imaginative clay pieces are created spontaneously. Kyte visualizes what she describes as compelling images in a lump of clay, which then wills itself into forms expressing certain shapes, colors, and movement. Owned and operated by more than 60 professional regional artists, Art Market Gallery is next to Downtown Grill & Brewery. Hours are 11 am to 6 pm Tuesday through Saturday, 11 am to 9 pm Friday, and 1 to 5 pm Sunday. The gallery is handicapped accessible. Parking in the abutting garage is free after 6 pm and on weekends. aficionado, you’ll insist on pure chocolate, although pure chocolate is not as easy to find as you might imagine unless you’ve already discovered Schakolad Chocolate Factory in Turkey Creek. Schakolad is your destination for internationally-acclaimed, handmade, European-style chocolates that contain nothing but pure, healthy, all-natural ingredients. Why is that important? If you truly enjoy chocolate and wish to indulge yourself in the very best, then you’ll want to avoid most of the varieties of chocolates sold at retail stores, which can contain wax, fillers, and preservatives. Wax? You bet. Called baker’s wax or paraffin, but not to be confused with the paraffin wax used to make candles, it’s used by many chocolate manufacturers as a filler, gloss enhancer, and to help retain moisture. The bottom line? If you like the store bought chocolate, one thing is for sure – you’re going to love Schakolad chocolate. In fact, you’ll likely become a chocolate aficionado yourself – one who indulges their pure chocolate cravings by regularly visiting Schakolad Chocolate Factory in Turkey Creek. Also, you’ll discover that Schakolad is much more than a European-inspired chocolate boutique, because Schakolad’s all handmande chocolates are made into hundreds of shapes, sizes, and novelties that are perfect for just about any occasion. How about pure chocolate champagne glasses to toast the bride and groom, a pure chocolate horn of plenty for Thanksgiving, or a pure chocolate golf ball for the Jack Nicklaus in your life? You name it, they’ve got it. Can’t find it? They’ll locate it. Cutting back on sugar and carbs? No problem. Schakolad features a variety of sugar-free chocolates. Indulge your pure chocolate cravings today at Schakolad Chocolate Factory, and discover what becoming a chocolate aficionado is all about.

Fall’s Best Trends goes without say-

ing that September in East Tennessee is more of an extension of summer with soaring temperatures and sun-soaked days. It also goes without saying that anything ORANGE is the perfect fall color here in Knoxville, but for the fashion trendsetters, here are few ideas for how to update your fall wardrobe whenever fall actually arrives in our state. The must-have color for fall 2013 is oxblood or chianti (translation: burgundy). It is the “it” color for fall 2013. It can be worn from head to toe as a blouse, sweater, or jacket, or complemented by an accessory in this fabulous hue. “40s glamour” is all the rage. In particular, the peplum styles of this era graced the runways for fall fashion week in New York. Paired with classic tweeds in sportswear, dresses, and outerwear, this vintage style looks fresh and modern. Regarding pattern, the aforementioned tweed, herringbone, and a sophisticated plaid

has a place in your wardrobe for fall 2013. Baroque jewelry and embellished tops bring a Bohemian vibe to standard jeans and tees and is a trend for this season. The fact is, the more ornate, the better. Lightweight turtleneck sweaters are trendy this fall and add the right layering touch to every outfit. A staple in every woman’s wardrobe, this invaluable piece can be used for the office or for casual weekend wear. We know it’s way too early to discuss outerwear, but “boxy” is in! So is fur, both faux and natural. Cooler weather is coming! Whatever your personal style preferences for this fall season, we do recognize the trends, and we have you covered at Next To New. We look forward to seeing you soon. If you haven’t shopped with us in the past, we can’t wait to meet you!

Old Gray Cemetery’s Annual Lantern and Carriage Tour will be held on Sunday, September 29th, from 4 to 7 pm. In one of the most politically and

philosophically divided regions of the country, Knoxville neighbors quickly became mortal enemies. In the beginning, brothers already literally lined up to fight against brothers at opposing recruitment points on opposite ends of Gay Street. Matters only worsened during the course of the war as Union and Confederate forces took turns occupying the city, both of them viewing the citizens as the enemy. Knoxville’s police weren’t just disbanded; its members also became military prisoners. Men suspected of holding sentiments at odds with the occupying side were arrested and sent to

“Camps of Instruction.” Soldiers moved into homes with or without invitation. Possession of weapons, alcohol, and even dogs were forbidden. Anything and everything could be confiscated. Food, shelter, and clothing became scarce. Then, one of the coldest winters remembered hit the region. By the end of the Civil War, September 2013 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

Chemical Peel? It’s that time of year. After a summer of beach trips, forgetting our sunscreen, and watching wrinkles and uneven skin pigmentation become a problem, we are ready to try to fix it. But how?

C

hemical peels are one of the most effective methods for improving damaged skin. There are many options available, offering everything from simply brightening the skin to correcting conditions like hyperpigmentation, scarring (such as in acne), wrinkling, and uneven surface texture. And they’re not just for the face. Common areas to treat with peels, in addition to the face, are the chest, back, arms, and hands. At Spa 9700, we have a great menu of peels to meet the increasing demands of our clients. In addition to simple skin brightening peels, Glo Therapeutics’ deeper formulations allow us to achieve dramatic results in a shorter period of time. Because any chemical peel will require some period of time out of direct sunlight, fall is the perfect time to begin a skin peel series. What exactly is a chemical peel? In basic terms, a chemical peel means to topically apply acids to the skin with the goal of stimulating cell turnover, resulting in the shedding of dead skin cells. The level or depth of the peel is determined by the makeup of the acids involved. The deeper the peel, the better the results and the longer the recovery time, meaning the time needed for the skin to stop the exfoliating process. During this post-treatment exfoliation, it’s important to use great quality skincare and sunscreen, which Spa 9700 can also help you with. When choosing which peel is right for you, you should enlist the help of one of Spa 9700’s experienced estheticians. They will analyze your skin, discuss with you your goals, and then make recommendations for the best treatment for you. With the flexibility provided from a variety of peels, Spa 9700 can tailor your treatment to your lifestyle. Spa 9700 has a complete selection of facials, chemical peels, and skincare sure to set you on the path to the best skin of your life! See our menu at www.spa9700.com. Mention this article and receive $10 off any chemical peel in the month of September. Spa 9700

Franklin TRAVEL TENNESSEE :

ranklin is a city in Williamson County,

Tennessee, and is the county seat and a suburb of Nashville. Founded in 1799, it was named after Benjamin Franklin and is a unique blend of well-preserved history and progress, having grown from a tiny, agricultural community into a vibrant county of residential, commercial, and corporate citizens. There is much to see and do in Franklin, from Civil War history with museums and antebellum mansions to their thriving downtown shopping area and the bustling modern Cool Springs area. In May 1995, Franklin was honored as one of the best downtown areas in the nation when it received one of five “Great American Main Street” awards in the first year of an annual competition held by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Since then, accolades have included the “Best Small Town in Tennessee,” “America’s Most Romantic Main Street,” and “One of America’s Greatest Antique Destinations,” among others. In May 2012, Franklin was ranked #4 on Livability.com‘s Best Places to Visit for Historic Preservation. Any time is perfect for a visit, but Franklin has fun, free events throughout the year – major festivals and happenings that have attracted visitors from all around the world. From Franklin’s Art Scene on the first Friday of each month to two street festivals consistently named as among the best in the southeast (Main Street Festival and Dickens of a Christmas), there are always opportunities to have fun in Franklin.

Main Street in Historic Downtown Franklin

As more and more Main Streets are disappearing, Franklin, winner of the Great American Main Street award, boasts a thriving, vital historic Main Street with more than 70 unique shops in the downtown historic district, including a dozen dining options.

Cool Springs Galleria: your shopping destination

Franklin brings you an art crawl on the first Friday of each month that takes you through its beautiful downtown core and historic buildings! The Franklin Art Scene includes more than 30 galleries and working studios dispersed through an area thriving with spots listed on the National Register of Historic Places in downtown Franklin. This monthly event provides both the novice and the art connoisseur an opportunity to see a sweeping variety of magnificent work, from blown glass, to turned wood, to mixed media and more. The event is free, but a $5 unlimited trolley ticket runs all night to take guests from spot to spot. Many of the locations serve complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres and are within walking distance.

Travel Dickens of a Christmas

Historic Downtown Franklin’s Main Street steps back in time to the Victorian era with more than 250 costumed characters bringing to life “A Christmas Carol” and other tales of Charles Dickens. The 28th annual Dickens of a Christmas is a free street festival, open to the public, December 14 from 10 am to 5 pm and December 15 from noon to 5 pm.

Civil War Attractions Carnton Plantation witnessed the "five bloodiest hours" of the Civil War on November 30, 1864, called the Battle of Franklin. Nearly 10,000 soldiers were killed, wounded, captured, or went missing. Carnton, home of the McGavocks, became the largest Confederate field hospital, and the bloodstains of that fateful battle still mar the floors today. Carnton is also home to McGavock Confederate Cemetery, the nation’s largest privately owned military cemetery. Home of the New York Times bestseller “Widow of the South,” Carnton Plantation offers a rare opportunity to experience the stories behind the novel firsthand. The Lotz House reopened its doors to the public on October 30, 2008. Unique antiques and collections are on display along with the Battle of Franklin experience from The Lotz House perspective.

The Carter House, built in 1830, also

witnessed one of the bloodiest battles during the Battle of Franklin. This farmhouse was commandeered for use as a Federal command post while the Carter family took refuge in the basement along with two other families. The battle that ensued is being called "the Gettysburg of the West." Evidence remains of the battle with more than 1,000 bullet holes on site, which includes the farm office, known as the most bullet-damaged building still standing from the entire Civil War.

Battlefield Preservation is the largest

battlefield reclamation project in the nation and is the eastern flank hallowed ground of the Battle of Franklin. 2014 will mark the 150th anniversary of the battle, and the city of Franklin will be the focus of the State Sesquicentennial. Keep an eye out for many events, especially the Battle of Franklin Re-enactment, planned for November 15 and 16 at Eastern Flank Battle Park.

The Civil War Trails program has come to Tennessee. On September 17, 2008, the first trail marker was ceremoniously placed in the ground in historic Franklin. Tennessee joins Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, and Maryland. Williamson County has more than a dozen sites on the trail. For more information on everything to do in Franklin, visit www.downtownfranklin.com or www.tnvacation.com.

30th Annual Pumpkinfest Historic Downtown Franklin is gearing up

for its 30th Annual Pumpkinfest, one of the town’s favorite traditions on and around Main Street, on Saturday, October 26th. The free festival will be in full swing from 10 am to 6 pm, and festivities will include live music, children’s activities, a Franklin Tomorrow chili cook-off, costume contest, and more to highlight the fall season. “Pumpkinfest is one of our great Main Street traditions,” said Downtown Franklin Association President Bob Roethemeyer. “We love being able to capitalize on our close community ties and exhibit the large pool of local talent. This year we’re excited to offer the preview party that will add another dimension with a showcase of local restaurants.”

Pumpkinfest Activities Include: » More than 75 arts and crafts booths will feature handcrafted fall and holiday items. Booths will be set up from the Public Square and East Main Street to First Avenue. » Children’s activities on Third Avenue North will include pumpkin painting, free games with small prizes offered by several local non-profits, inflatables, games, and more. Returning this year is the Great Pumpkin, delivered to Main Street by Franklin’s Sister City – Carleton Place, Canada. » Live music anyone? Two stages will offer continuous entertainment at Main Street and Fifth Avenue and on the Public Square. » The 11th Annual Franklin Tomorrow Chili Cook-off will feature at least 10 teams who will serve up to twoounce portions of chili per person. An $8 ticket includes 10 samples from local chefs. The tent is at Third Avenue South, between City Hall and the Courthouse, and they’ll be serving from 10:30 am to 3 pm. » Children can compete in four categories during the annual costume contest on the Public Square. The categories are pets, children ages 0-5, 6-13, and 14+. The entry fee is $2, and sign-up is next to the stage in front of City Hall from 10 am to 3 pm. There is a maximum of 50 contestants in each category. Contestants must be entered and present on the Public Square by 3 pm to participate. » For some spooky fun, tours of downtown Franklin’s two historic cemeteries on North Margin Street (two blocks from Main Street) will be offered from 7 to 9 pm on Saturday evening. In “Grave Matters: Stories Behind the Stones,” costumed actors relay fascinating stories of the cemeteries’ inhabitants. Tickets are $15 for ages 14 and up and $5 for ages 7 to 13. Tickets may be purchased at www.franklinonfoot.com, at the Heritage Foundation office at Five Points Post Office, or at the gate the night of the event. Pumpkinfest is a free event except for special activities as noted. For more information, call 615-5918500 or visit www.historicfranklin.com.

hat do you get when you combine America’s best-selling and the only engineered granite with the nation’s number one rated Granite Transformations franchise? How about a showcase quality kitchen or bath that exceeds your expectations? Our products speak for themselves. Granite Transformations is an international company and the largest factory-direct granite countertop company in the world. We take the best granite Mother Nature has to offer and make it better. Our state-of-theart engineered granite countertops have strength and durability that exceeds that of ordinary slab granite. It is maintenancefree, heat, stain, and scratch resistant, and

But it’s our service that sets us apart. We chose Granite Transformations because of its proprietary, cutting-edge, state-of-the-art technology 38

that simply could not be duplicated. But we also recognized that the nation’s best granite countertops would be no better than the quality of the fabricator and installer. We felt deeply in our hearts, before we took the plunge into this opportunity, that we would be successful. That’s why we’ve put our name on every project, right next to the Granite Transformations name. Our goal was to create a reputation for providing our clients with a level of old-world craftsmanship and pride that you might have thought no longer existed. Remember – who you choose to do business with can be as important as the product you choose. When you add together the best product + the best process + the best

warranty + the best company and the best employees, you have SUCCESS. We succeeded! We are pleased to announce that we were just selected as Granite Transformations’ Franchise of the Year for 2012 in North America. We wish to thank all of you for your past support and encouragement, which has helped make this achievement possible. As we look forward to the future, both Patti and I are even more committed to providing you with an even higher level of customer service, whether you’re installing new countertops, backsplashes, tub and shower surrounds, or cabinet refacing. $ Detailed and clearly worded contracts outlining what we are expected to do have taken the guesswork out of the equation. “How many coats did you say?” “Was the paint included in the price?” “You said caulking was included.” All of these items are addressed in every job we do. We list between 7-15 items we are committed to completing. Another important aspect is providing current local references. If we have 10 or 30 satisfied customers in your subdivision, chances are good you already know some of our clients. When we send out our estimates, we always list 6-8 recent interior or exterior local references. Talk to our customers and see what they have to say about our work. Responds to Change

Do you find viewing websites on a smartphone or tablet frustrating? Research shows more than 80% of people are disappointed with their mobile browsing experience and would use their smartphones more if it improved. If consumers can’t access what they’re looking for, they quickly change course. Good news! 2013 has been declared the year of Responsive We b D e s i g n (RWD) by technology sources like Mashable. com. Meaning, more and more websites will be implementing this design to adjust to the many devices used today. The increasing use of mobile web access demands it. Responsive Web Design, a term only recently coined in 2010, means that no matter what device you are using – smartphone, tablet, or desktop – the image adjusts according to the screen size of the device it’s being viewed on. Home shoppers need and expect full functionality on their mobile device just as they would get on a desktop. Homes & Land redesigned their website HomesAndLand.com earlier this year, becoming one of the first real estate search sites to incorporate RWD. Larger property photos easily display on both smartphones and tablets, encouraging the viewer to stay engaged. That translates to them being on the site longer, because it delivers what they need and want. Real estate agents gain greater exposure as a result. For serious house hunters, RWD means getting what they want when they need it. HomesAndLand. com’s responsive design provides a satisfying experience for buyers and sellers, which means better exposure for your home. If you’re considering selling your property, be sure to speak with one of the real estate professionals taking advantage of today’s technology as seen in Homes & Land magazine or online at HomesAndLand.com. About Homes & Land

Homes & Land Media is a leading integrated real estate media franchise founded in 1983 by Russ and Cheryl Haskins. Family owned and operated, the Haskins family serves more than 600 real estate agents across East and Middle Tennessee from their Farragut office.

Well, in the case of Oriental rugs, although durable and long lasting, their longevity relies on periodic washing designed to remove harmful dirt, debris, and abrasives. But the washing process must also protect your rug’s natural wool fiber and organic dyes. Water is a natural, universal solvent that dissolves the buildup of solid and debris in carpet and rug fibers. Regular tap water can contain hardness and traces of chemicals and metals. The chlorine, chemicals, and metals found in tap water can cause premature wear and fading and can result in residue remaining in your carpets and rugs, which can cause odor and shorten their useful lives. Water of high purity cleans very effectively and does the heavy lifting so soap doesn’t have to. De-ionized water allows Superior Carpet to go more natural and sustainable by using far less soap and cleaning product to clean your home’s carpets and rugs. For the cleanest rugs and carpeting possible and to protect your valuable Oriental rugs for generations to come, insist on the superior service that only Superior Carpet Cleaning & Rug Washing can deliver.

Starting in 1967, well before all the hits started flowing, Chicago established a reputation for its powerful live show. Fueled by a passion for music, Chicago's members exploded the conventions of what rock music could or should be. The result was a groundbreaking new form, played by extraordinarily talented musicians. Once the group began making

records, fans rewarded them with record sales of 100,000,000, 21 Top 10 singles, five consecutive number one albums, 11 number one singles and five Gold singles. An incredible 25 of their 33 albums have been certified platinum. To date, Chicago is the first American band to chart Top 40 albums in five decades – a landmark accomplishment.

Are you enjoying the new style of weddings as much as I am? Gone are the days of boring décor, nasty fruit cake, and weddings that look identical. My husband and I have attended three weddings recently – one with a country theme, one with a Paris theme, and one with a Disney theme. I loved them all! It really made me think of how we decorate our homes and how they SHOULD represent who you are in every way. When you invite guests into your home, does it reflect your personality, taste, and style? The odds are there’s something in your home right now that “just doesn’t feel right.”

I listen and learn and return with a design that will please the taste, style, and personality they are trying to surround themselves with. The first time I meet with you I take a short tour of your home to get a sense of your taste and style. You may ask, “What if I want to completely change my current style?” Well, that happens most of the time, but the foundation of your likes and dislikes are clear after the tour. I spend time with you discussing many different aspects of your room, colors, fabrics, and finishes. The design experience that I have helps me determine what you want to express in your home. I listen and learn and return with a fresh design that pleases the taste, style, and personality you want to surround yourself with. Whether it’s an original design, a picture from a magazine, or just an idea of what you want, I’m able to pull the design together – usually on the first try! One client handed me a picture of a complicated window treatment she wanted for her very tall and very large window. It took some time to design the actual window treatment so it fit the window correctly. The result was beautiful, and she loved it! When you’re planning how you want your home to feel, you shouldn’t feel rushed. I take more time with you so I can connect on a personal level and work hand-in-hand with you to design the room of your dreams! I’d love to come to your home and help you express all of your amazing uniqueness! Sandy Kozar is an Award-Winning Interior Designer and Owner of Decorating Den Interiors, Knoxville. What’s Really in a Square Foot?

One of the first questions a potential home-

owner asks is “How much does it cost per foot to build a house?” Cost per square foot (CSF) is the best way we know to compare costs, but it is also the most deceptive and misleading. Unfortunately, it is also one of the few questions that we simply cannot answer very specifically. Can you tell me how much it costs to take a vacation? How much should I expect to spend on a new car? All of these questions contain so many variables that it’s impossible for anyone to answer them accurately without first asking several additional questions and gathering much more information.

Jenny Blalock before you put too much faith in “average” numbers, keep in mind that the only home you really care about is the one that you’re about to build. The best approach to determining how much your new home will cost might be to simply work backwards. Start by determining how much you can afford to spend, and then be realistic about the size of the home you need. Finally, decide what and where you can afford to build. Luxe Homes & Design can help guide you and discuss the home that you would like to build and the amount of money you can spend. Then you can get an accurate construction cost for the specific home that you’re about to build. “We believe every home should be a work of art that bears the unique signature of its owner,” said builder Jenny Blalock. “I love

to collaborate with my clients and integrate their lifestyle to a home design and translate their visions into artistically original designs. Having a home designed for your needs and personal taste is great, but it also needs to be designed to save you money in the long run to make it a worthwhile investment.” That’s why it’s important to choose a builder wisely, and insist that they discuss in detail the products and building materials they’ll be using in your home. Homes with lower square footage cost may be appealing at first glance, but cheaper and less efficient building materials will likely cost you much more in the long run. The same is true when calculating the cost to build a new home. Let’s begin by considering what square foot homebuilding costs really are – nothing more than the total cost of the home divided by the total number of square feet in that home. So, a 2,000 square foot home with total construction costs of $250,000 would cost $125 per square foot to build. Spend another $50,000 on a gourmet kitchen, an elegant master bath, 10-foot ceilings, or any other combination of “above average” features or finishes and that same 2,000 square foot home would now cost $150 per square foot to build. Other considerations would be if the home was single story or two story, the type of foundation, the pitch of the roof, the shape of the home and number of corners or offsets in the design (square or rectangular shapes are the least expensive), the number of windows, the height of the ceilings, the size of the garage, zoning laws, covenants, as well as the number and size of decks or porches, patios, and landscaping. There really isn’t any uniform method of defining what’s included in any given square foot price. Local contractors might be able to quote “average” homebuilding costs and figures, but Jenny Blalock portrait by Beth Fellhoelter | Bathroom photo by D. Roberts Photography

Donna the Buffalo September 13 at 8pm Bijou Theatre Donna the Buffalo's feel-good, groove-oriented, danceable, and often socially conscious music all began more than 20 years ago with roots in old time fiddle music that evolved into a soulful electric Americana mix infused with elements of Cajun, zydeco, rock, folk, reggae, and country. Donna the Buffalo is known for touring the country, remaining fiercely independent as one of the industry's most diverse

roots-music bands, and has "earned a reputation as one of the most respected, eclectic, and hardestworking acts today," according to Encore. Enjoy Instant, Endless Hot Showers and Stop Pouring Money Down the Drain

W

hile it may be difficult to

think about the winter months ahead, we’re just months away from winter. Think for a moment about that hot shower you had hoped to enjoy last January or February that was interrupted all of a sudden when your hot water heater turned warm, and then cold. The problem is your water heater. Conventional water heaters only heat a limited supply of water. Once exhausted, it could easily take an hour or more to reheat a new supply of hot water. Here’s something else to consider. All of that unused water that goes down the drain while you wait for your water to heat up is costing you big time. In fact, for every $100 in water you waste needlessly, your water utility charges you an additional $300 Jamie Foster, in sewage fees. That’s Owner $400 down the drain. The solution is a tankless, on-demand water heater that not only provides an instant and unlimited supply of hot water, but only heats the water required. Conventional water heaters heat, and then continue to reheat, hot water. And with as much as 30% of your home’s energy budget going toward your water heater, tankless, on-demand water heaters just make good sense, and good cents. Welcomed cooler months are just ahead, but so is that unexpected cold shower. One call to My Plumber can ensure that you’ll have an unlimited supply of hot water this winter, not to mention a much needed decrease in energy consumption, while reducing both your monthly water and sewer bills, with your home’s new tankless, on-demand water heater. Gently Used! o you know the difference between brand spanking new and gently used furniture, art, and home décor items? How about savings of up to 75% off retail? Here’s something else to consider. Brand spanking new becomes gently used the moment it leaves the delivery truck and enters your home.

My husband and Consign To Design cofounder, David, and I pride ourselves in selecting the very best in pre-owned, gently used home furnishings, art, and home décor items that are displayed in beautiful vignettes which are designed to help you visualize how the items will appear in your home. We also pride ourselves in helping families who are moving, consolidating households, redecorating, remodeling, or downsizing to repurpose otherwise brand name, high-

quality, gently used furniture. Finally, we’re proud of the savings we can offer buyers in search of quality, brand name furniture at just a fraction of its original retail price. Here’s a novel idea that’s growing in popularity – Milk Paint! Isn’t that the paint everybody is talking about which is used to achieve a primitive look in repurposed furniture? Well… yes and no. Milk Paint is an allnatural paint used to provide chairs, tables, desks, dressers, armoires, and more with an often much needed facelift. Milk Paint can also be used for almost all interior and exterior surfaces, including previously painted

September 15 at 2 pm Farragut Folklife Museum

FREE EVENT

Join us for an afternoon at the movies! “Gettysburg” is a war drama depicting one of the biggest events of the American Civil War. The massive three-day conflict begins as Confederate General Robert E. Lee (Martin Sheen) presses his troops north into Pennsylvania, leading to confrontations with Union forces, including the regiment of Colonel Joshua Chamberlain (Jeff Daniels). As the battle rages

on and casualties mount, the film follows both the front lines and the strategic maneuvering behind the scenes. The movie is rated PG and has a running time of approximately 4 hours and 30 minutes. Seating will begin at 1:45 pm with a 10 minute intermission at 4:15. Light refreshments will be provided. For more information, visit www. townoffarragut.org.

Pests Thrive in Rainy Weather

If your home has more insects than the movie set of “A Bug’s Life,” then it’s probably time to call in the professionals at Heritage Termite & Pest Service. April showers bring spring flowers, but the

unprecedented level of rain this year has given rise to an unprecedented level of unwanted pests. Persistent rain means saturated soil, and this excessive moisture gives rise to an increase insect propagation and forces many pests out from under the ground where they live and breed. These pests, including ants, earwigs, fleas, mosquitoes, and a host of other insects, are pervasive. They invade our homes through cracks and spaces in our home’s exterior, improper sealing, door and window weather stripping, Persistent rain and damaged or miss- means saturated soil, ing screens. Insects, and this excessive including a growing number of reported moisture gives rise bedbug cases, reside in to an increase insect spaces under cabinets, propagation and in our carpeting, and, forces many pests yes, even in our beds. More than just a nui- out from under the sance, pests, including ground where they termites and carpen- live and breed. ter ants, can cause hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars in damage to our homes, while other insects, such as mosquitoes and fire ants, can result in health risks to both our pets and family members. The solution is easier than you might imagine: Heritage Termite & Pest Service. Their experienced and licensed professionals will initiate a thorough inspection of your home to identify the pests present and then recommend an affordable solution to control your pests once and for all. They will then implement a follow-up program to prevent their return. Unlike the one-size-fitsall pesticides sold at the big box stores, Heritage Termite & Pest Service’s professionals will use the right product to safely eliminate unwanted pests and provide the long-term control your family deserves – guaranteed. So if unwanted pests and insects are bugging you, then one call to Heritage Termite & Pest Service can do it all – safely, efficiently, and affordably.

Are You Enjoying Your Home’s Outdoor Living Spaces? If your home isn’t equipped with retractable

screens, the answer is likely no. Why? Because the hot summer sun and biting insects are probably keeping you indoors. But there’s a solution. While homeowners across the country are increasingly creating popular outdoor “rooms” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially made to be weather-proof, the hot afternoon sun and biting insects often keep homeowners from using their new outdoor spaces. Retractable screens provide an answer to these problems. By combining indoor and outdoor spaces, these innovative screen solutions enhance and promote the outdoor living experience. They provide shade and allow people to enjoy outdoors during hot summer days, extending the time spent on patios while keeping annoying, biting insects at bay. Large, motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of a building, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. The best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish the views or esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, some of the retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. These retractable screens are available in different custom colors and wood grain finishes that help merge the screens with your interior or exterior color schemes. The screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and be connected to the general building automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection is called for. For more information about retractable screen options, visit www.phantomscreens.com.

It’s An Ancient Chinese Secret

S

everal years ago my daughter made a new friend at school. Her mom invited us to their home later that year to celebrate Chinese New Year. The home they shared was a tiny studio apartment in which mom and daughter shared the bed at night, and it became their couch during the day. But what stood out to me most was the meticulous detail that had been given to every surface of the home. Although the carpet was threadbare and the bathroom was tiny, there wasn’t a speck of dust or dirt in that entire little space. I complimented her on how clean she kept her home, and she just smiled. I’m still not sure she understood me as the language barrier between us was great. I left that day with a new admiration for this small family and how well they took care of what was theirs. As spotless as that home was, it’s been

tile & grout

my experience that tile and grout is notoriously difficult to clean. For years I tried new products and techniques with little result. Unfortunately, home tile cleaners and home grout cleaning methods just don’t do the trick, especially if you’re trying to eliminate stubborn dirt that has embedded on tile surfaces or deep into grout lines. Have you ever wondered what makes tile and grout cleaning so difficult? Here’s the scoop… soil, chemicals, and contaminants build up over time and get pushed deep within your flooring with regular mopping. This causes build-up, which over time causes your tile to look dull and your grout lines to darken and discolor. Dirt becomes essentially trapped in the pores of your floor and without special equipment can be near impossible to dislodge. Surface Doc uses a high pressure, high

temperature, extraction technique to open the pores of your floor and extract deeply embedded dirt. This process allows us to remove years of build-up from tile and grout as well as concrete, stone, and brick pavers. As for how my Co-owner sweet friend man- John aged to maintain Fitzwilliam her floors without any fancy tools? I suppose that shall remain an ancient Chinese secret. For the rest of us, Surface Doc has our backs. Give John a call today for a free, in-home demonstration on your floors, or visit Surface Doc online to see before/after videos and pictures or to schedule a visit.

plant’s durability and ornamental features make sucker maintenance worth the effort. Common crapemyrtles do best in full to partial sun. They can take on the intense heat of summer and have moderate watering needs once mature. Common crapemyrtles are cold hardy from USDA hardiness zones 6 to 9 and can be killed back to the ground during a severe winter (-5 to -10 degrees Fahrenheit).

mon crapemyrtle (Lagerstroemia indica) is truly a southern garden staple. It’s found in practically every southern landscape and adds multi-season interest to the garden. Depending on cultivar, the showy summer flowers bloom between late spring and early fall, and flower colors range from white, pink, orchid, purple, and dark red to true red. As an added bonus, common crapemyrtle’s unique exfoliating bark and fall foliage color make it an alluring ornamental throughout the year. Common crapemyrtles come in many different sizes to fit a variety of garden uses. With such an expansive selection, it’s not difficult to find the desired color and size for your planting site. Dwarf cultivars such as ‘Pocomoke’ and ‘Cherry Dazzle’ grow less than five feet tall and are small enough to fit a small courtyard or city garden. They can also be used in containers or massed in borders. Semi-dwarf cultivars grow five to 12 feet tall, intermediate cultivars grow 13 to 20 feet

tall, while tree varieties grow more than 23 feet tall. Intermediate cultivars and tree common crapemyrtles make excellent specimens near a patio or entryway. Tree types create gorgeous living arches and canopies over a driveway, walk, or garden room. Site them where their summer blooms and winter exfoliating bark can also be enjoyed from indoors. Whether multi- or single-stemmed, I suggest that the lower side branches of common crapemyrtle be removed as the plant grows to expose its gorgeous exfoliating bark. Though basal sucker growth can be a continual battle with common crapemyrtle, the

September in the Garden Have you heard of something called “earthing” or grounding? According to the articles I read, earthing causes beneficial changes in your heart rate, decreases inflammation, reduces pain, promotes healthy sleep, and thins your blood. What is this wonderful new process? Walking barefoot! Yep, supposedly walking barefoot 20 minutes a day allows free electrons from the earth to transfer into your body through a conductor on the bottom of your feet. These electrons are supposedly some of the most powerful antioxidants known to man. Earthing is best done beside or in bodies of water or on dew covered grass, since water is a conductor. I’m not going to tell you that walking barefoot is going to cure everything that ails you, but I think it’s very interesting to think about how we keep going back to nature. We’re now realizing that our bodies were designed to work with the earth

instead of against it. Speaking of working with the earth, when is the last time you got your hands, if not your feet, into the soil? The seasons are changing, so it’s time to go back outside and get dirty. ›› The first thing I suggest you do is walk around your yard (preferably sans shoes). Look for signs of insects or diseases on plants. Look for broken or damaged branches on trees and shrubs. Do plants need to be cut back, divided, or pruned? What needs to be done to help your yard get ready for winter? ›› Is something missing in your yard? Fall is the best time to plant most trees and shrubs as well as some perennials. This will give them time to get their roots established before next spring. ›› Fall is also a good time to divide and transplant perennials. Most garden guides suggest dividing spring bloomers in the fall and summer/autumn bloomers in the

spring. Give us a call if you’re unsure how to go about the process. ›› Clean up your yard. Get the dead stuff off your plants, and pick up any diseased leaves. ›› For those of you who are new to the gardening/lawn care business, here’s a mini-course on pansies and mums. First, there’s no such thing as a “winter” pansy. A pansy is a pansy. In this part of the U.S., they’re normally planted in the fall, will survive all winter, and will be gorgeous next spring. As for mums, the ones you buy this time of year are, for the most part, hybrids. They’ll need to be planted in the ground by mid/late September if you want them to come back next year. If they do re-emerge, they may be a different color or come back as dozens of little mumlets. In other words, plant them as an annual, and be pleasantly surprised if they come back! ›› Vegetable gardening was either feast or famine this year. Either you had bushels of produce, or everything rotted or died of a fungus. Don’t give up! This was a rough year on veggies because of the rain and cool temperatures. Keep harvesting the remnants of your vegetable garden, and get it ready for next year by cleaning out debris. Make note of where things were planted this year, and plant them in a different location next year. This helps to prevent diseases. ›› If you found a lot of insects when you walked around your yard, you probably need one last treatment with an insecticide to help keep bugs from setting up winter homes. You’ll also want to treat houseplants that have been outside for the summer before you bring them inside. This will prevent unwanted houseguests like aphids, whiteflies, and ants. ›› You may need to do a little pruning to remove dead or diseased branches or to tame unruly plants. Save the severe pruning for later, however. Hard pruning encourages new growth, and that new growth will be in danger if we get an early frost or freeze. ›› Mulch does more than just make your yard look pretty. It also helps keep the moisture levels and temperature stable and acts as somewhat of a weed deterrent. If you piled it on in the spring, you may just want to fluff it up with a rake. If you didn’t put any on this spring, a couple of inches will help plants get through the winter. Keep checking our website and Facebook for updates! We’re working on getting our fall sales and workshops scheduled, and we’ll post those as soon as they’re finalized. Go play in the dirt! It’s good for you!

FairMechanics.com Connecting Smart Shoppers with the Right Mechanic

Staci’s car was making a strange noise. When she pressed the brakes, she could hear a lowpitched chirp, and as time passed, the noise became louder and occurred nearly every time she drove. Staci decided to visit a website she’d seen advertised, FairMechanics.com. was concerned about safety,” said Staci. “What if my brakes went out on me while I was driving? I was also worried that if I waited and let the problem go undiagnosed, then I might have to pay for a major repair.” After Staci created a free Fairmechanics.com account, she created a simple post describing the noise her brakes were making. Within a day or two, Staci had received responses from three auto repair shops. They diagnosed the problem and gave her quotes on the cost to fix it. “My car is four years old, and I learned that it has brake wear indicators,” said Staci. “That’s where the chirping noise was coming from. Those indicators tell drivers that the brake pads need to be replaced. The mechanics also told me that my car was safe to drive, but I did need to service my brakes sooner rather than later. That was a relief.” Staci read reviews left by other shoppers for each mechanic and picked the one that offered the best value based on her budget and the location of the auto repair shop. She then contacted the shop and used the message board on her job posting to schedule a time to drop off her car. “The website saved me a lot of

time,” said Staci. “I didn’t have time while I was at work to call a bunch of different repair shops and explain the problem and try to get estimates for the repairs. FairMechanics.com did all the work for me, and the reviews made it easy to see which repair shops had honest mechanics.” Staci’s mechanic of choice finished the repair ahead of schedule at the agreed-upon price. “They were great!” said Staci. “I’d definitely go back and was happy to leave them a positive review. If you need an auto repair shop you can trust, FairMechanics.com is a good place to start.”

River Cruising An Easy Way to Explore and Experience Europe Europe is a popular destination for international travelers looking to visit the world’s great capitals such as Paris, Amsterdam, and Prague, to experience European culture, and to explore charming small towns. But planning a European trip can be daunting, because it involves a lot of research to decide where to go, how to get there, and what to see. River cruising offers an excellent solution to this travel challenge for these reasons:

» See Europe’s great cities:

Many of Europe’s greatest cities such as Budapest, Paris, Vienna, and Prague developed along the rivers because of the easy means of transportation and trade, as well as access to fresh water. That’s why river cruises can easily access so many of Europe’s cosmopolitan cities and even quaint towns and villages that developed along the river banks. Sleek, intimate ships hosting only about 200 passengers are much smaller than ocean cruise ships and often can dock right in the heart of town so passengers can walk right off and start exploring.

travel without the hassle of changing hotels, packing and unpacking multiple times, or finding transportation. These smooth-sailing cruises are the fastest-growing travel segment also because the views along the river are everchanging, providing a relaxing and highly scenic way to travel, and there’s never any seasickness as can happen on an ocean cruise. Because river cruising creates so many opportunities to visit different destinations on a relaxing, scenic vacation, it’s easy to understand why these cruises are growing in popularity. Start planning your river cruise today, and begin daydreaming about all the sites you’re going to see and different cultures you can experience.

Viking River Cruises passengers enjoy dining "al fresco" onboard their ship in the heart of Budapest

» Immerse in the culture:

In addition to being able to explore a new city each day of the cruise, river cruising allows travelers to develop a deep understanding of the cultures they explore. For example, Viking Cruises – the largest river cruise line – has launched 10 new river cruise ships this year alone and includes a “Cultural Curriculum” on all itineraries. This Culture Curriculum offers passengers language lessons, demonstrations of regional cooking and crafts, visits to local marketplaces, and privileged access to cultural treasures. Whether privately touring the ancestral home of Prague’s Prince Lobkowicz or providing guided tours with the best English-speaking local guides, Viking Cruises offers many ways to get up close with local culture on their cruises.

» Explore alone or with a knowledgeable guide:

River cruise travelers have the option to explore destinations on their own or with a local guide on a group tour. This flexibility gives passengers a chance to experience the local culture as they wish. For travelers with specific interests, Viking Cruises offers a complimentary concierge to help connect travelers with local treasures like a decadent chocolatier or reservations at local restaurants.

East Tennessee.” Dr. West does a masterful job of weaving entertaining stories with historic vignettes of the people and region. This year’s theme, The Power of Place, speaks to the importance of incorporating authentic places into economic development, planning, and tourism efforts. Across East Tennessee, communities are positioning their cultural assets as amenities for residents and visitors, which create a richer, more desirable place. The conference sessions and speakers will share insights and tips to enhance our communities by using The Power of Place. Historic preservation has become a fundamental tool for strengthening American communities. It has proven to be vital for a wide range of public goals, including small business incubation, housing, sustainable development, neighborhood stabilization, downtown revitalization, job creation, promotion of the arts and culture, small town renewal, heritage tourism, economic development, and others. Each year at the conference, ETPA announces the annual East Tennessee Preservation Awards. This year’s awards dinner will feature special guest, Kreis Beall, who is the founder and director of design for Blackberry Farms. Tennessee’s State Historic Preservation Officer, Patrick McIntyre, will also be on hand to assist with the awards presentation. On Thursday evening, the Downtown Maryville Association, one of ETPA’s longtime partners, is hosting their annual Maryville Uncorked event in conjunction with the conference. Make plans to join us to support downtown Maryville, and get a taste of local restaurants and a variety of wines. For more information, visit www. downtownmaryville.com.

For the past two years, we’ve partnered with the East Tennessee Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) to offer continuing education credits for architects. The two days are expected to yield seven hours of credits. Not only will architects earn AIA credits, but they’ll also have an opportunity to network with folks from across the region. Our conference is generously sponsored by a variety of organizations, companies, and individuals. Their support ensures the re g i s t rat i o n c o s t s remain affordable while still including meals, shuttle transportation, and first-rate speakers. This year’s conference is sponsored, in part, by MTSU’s Center for Historic Preservation, Plan East Tennessee, Family Pride Corporation, Gatlinburg Convention and Visitors Bureau, Merit Construction, Oak Ridge Heritage and Preservation Association, East Tennessee Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, Blount Partnership, Friends of the Smokies, MaryvilleCollege,InvestigativeServicesofEast Tennessee, Cultural Resource Analysts, Cocke County Partnership, Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center , Quality Financial Concepts, Shephard Inn of Dandridge, and Thomason and Associates. If you would like to learn more about sponsorship opportunities, please contact Ethiel Garlington at 865-523-8008 or egarlington@knoxheritage.org. To register online and see the full conference schedule, visit www.knoxheritage.org/ conference.

Each month contributors from the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance (ETPA) write an article for Everything Knoxville celebrating the rich heritage of our region. Candlelight Christmas Evenings with nighttime candlelight tours of Biltmore House take place November 9 through January 4, 2014. This year guests will see 56 trees throughout Biltmore House, each intricately designed and hand-decorated by members of Biltmore’s floral team. Miles of fresh garland and wreaths create a yuletide scent throughout the house, with around 1,000 red and white poinsettias in the Winter Garden and other areas. Candlelight Christmas Evenings

Biltmore House takes on an enchanting atmosphere during Candlelight Christmas Evenings, creating a unique holiday experience. Choirs and musical ensembles perform Christmas music throughout the house while guests wander among the decorated rooms. Educator Profile

By C o u r t n e y C r a i g

Dan Parker

Tennessee’s Assistant Principal of the Year Wh e n Dan Par ke r was named Tennessee’s Assistant Principal of the Year, he immediately credited his fellow educators. “I’m simply a representation of the many assistant principals who labor with students every day, year in and year out, working long and stressful hours, helping teachers develop our future leaders,” he said. “It’s an honor, and I’m humbled to think that what I do is so special. We all do what I do.” Dan, an assistant principal at Bearden High School, was honored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals and Virco, Inc. Though he’s been working in education since 1973, he’s been at Bearden High since 2007. “As a high school student I remember learning lots of stuff and continually asking, ‘What does this mean to me? How can I use this to make my life better?’” he said. “I would consider the use of learning history, solving quadratic equations, knowing the make-up of cells, or thinking about Macbeth’s motivation. I learned a lot but never quite understood the importance of

72

learning it. I eventually came to the realization that as an educator I could help young people ask and answer those sa m e q u e s t i o n s, m a k i n g their education more meaningful to them.” Dan arrives at school by 6:45 each morning. His workdays are spent making sure the school is safe, connecting with students about disciplinary issues, their grades, and life goals, meeting with parents, and walking through classrooms to see the good things students and teachers are doing. “I enjoy watching students and sometimes even helping them mature,” he said. “One of the most enjoyable things is when I’m able to call students who made all A’s for a report period to my office. These students generally aren’t called to the assistant principal’s office, so it can be rather stressful the first time this happens. We talk about the things

in which they’re involved, what their future plans are, and then I thank them for working so hard to get the grades they have. A Reese’s Cup or a Hershey bar makes the stress worthwhile.” Dan believes the most important part of his job is to keep a positive environment at school physically, socially, and emotionally. “I also like to serve the teachers to help make their lives a little easier, whether it’s unlocking a door for them, saying a kind word when they seem down, or saying something to make them smile, if not laugh,” he said. “There’s so much emphasis on higher and higher scores that sometimes it seems that’s the only thing we care about. Teachers are people, too, and if I can help them see that at least one person recognizes that they have value beyond what scores their students produce, then I have done a good job for that day.”

Business

Everywhere and Anywhere

O

ne well- known

national media company estimates that individual consumers see between 3,000 and 20,000 marketing messages each and every day. The higher numbers include virtually every form of marketing message – including labels on goods in a grocery store, coupon mailers, you name it – and you may not even notice the majority of the messages directed at you. Whether you notice these marketing messages or not, it was the intent and the hope of the advertiser that you would. But the simple truth is that the human brain just can’t process 3,000+ messages in a day. Advertising messages appear everywhere and anywhere – on your supermarket basket, talking fuel pumps, the back of cash register receipts, and, can you believe it, in public restrooms. While we likely all agree that advertisers may seem to have gone too

far, having crossed the line by over saturating consumers with so much media noise, the fact remains that each small business owner still needs to communicate their unique marketing messages to current and potential new customers. So what’s the best way to proceed? Answer these three questions and you’ll know. First, what’s your message? I’ve been surprised of late to discover just how many small business owners cannot articulate how they differentiate themselves among their competition. If you can’t differentiate yourself, how do you expect your customers to? In the absence of these key differentiators, you’re as generic as scotch tape. Secon d, who’s your target audience? Unless you’re selling pizza, don’t answer to everyone. Be specific. Don’t over-reach.

1 2

F i n a l ly, what is the most efficient and cost-effective advertising platform that will properly frame your unique advertising message and reach your targeted audience? Here’s where you’ve got to do your homework. Select that platform(s) that helps your targeted customers and potential new clients to gain an appreciation of just what their experience might be if they were to become your client. How will it differ from a competitive experience? Don’t over-think this. Answer these three questions thoroughly and honestly, and you will build a business that will thrive – and not just survive – well into the future.

Running on Empty B U SINESS B ASI C S by Beth Townsend Are you running on empty? Our culture demands a lot from us. Often we find ourselves discouraged and sometimes defeated. While that is normal, what must set you apart is a commitment to deal with down cycles and pull through each stronger and more steadfast. I’m a fan of positive thinking, and my optimism far outweighs my pessimism. When it comes to choosing friends, there is no doubt it’s more fun to have lunch with the “glass half full” person than the “glass half empty” person. But even for the most optimistic, there are times when realities hit us hard. We face the fact that we must work harder than usual to just put on a happy face. Therefore, when you get down, accept the fact that this cycle makes you completely normal. No one is happy all the time. Even though it’s best not to share your unhappy days with everyone, it’s constructive to deal with reality and adjust as needed to improve your circumstance. Here are a few suggestions: 1. Talk to someone who can help, don’t talk to people who can’t. Don’t vent without a plan. It’s unproductive to share the depth of your concerns with someone who

can’t offer good counsel. Give your problems the attention they deserve, but don’t allow them to dominate your conversations unless you’re finding a solution.

2. Exercise. It is likely the number one activity in immediately improving your mental state of mind. While it’s also probably the hardest, it’s important to take that step towards discipline. It will help and can spur enthusiasm. 3. Get a new plan – change something. Often the culprit in feelings of

discouragement is a lack of satisfaction in your work and key relationships. Don’t sit around and think about what you wish others would do; make changes that elicit change. If you want others to communicate better, then you start communicating better. It can inadvertently remind others of the need to talk things through.

4. Deal with conflict productively.

Often we are quick to re-think difficult conversations in our minds, when we should simply revisit conversations where we were left confused by the outcome. Don’t second guess; go

back and clarify. Often ill feelings are simply misunderstood conversations, so be strong enough to revisit when needed.

5. Finally, accept what is not likely to change. It’s rare

we change anyone else. What prompts change is your own growth. When you start to stand up for yourself, others will respect you. When you are more direct with others, they will be more direct with you. When you are kind, others often respond kindly as well. We initiate the behaviors we hope to receive, and we do so with confidence. Are you running on empty? Take time to refuel, recharge, and re-enter your world a new and better you!

Relationships

Stop Holding On! Four Steps to Get Your Power Back in Your In-Law Relationship How many times have you been upset

with your in-law to where you can’t get what she said or did out of your head? You keep thinking about it, stewing about it, playing it over and over until you feel like exploding. You tell your friends about it, your family about it; you tell anyone who will listen. You just can’t seem to let it go. I have, you have… we all have. If you’re human, you can probably say you’ve done this on more than one occasion, right? Unfortunately, the only people who are impacted by this are you and probably the people who you’ve told the story to over and over again. If you think about it, the person who caused you this angst doesn’t even know any of this is going on. She’s just going about her life, free of the turmoil and stress you’re feeling. It doesn’t seem fair, does it? By playing the scenario over and over in your head, hanging on to what she said or did, making yourself feel miserable, you are

keeping this negative “thing” alive. You are giving her all your power. Here’s a chance to stop giving your power away to the last person you want to have it – your in-law! Try these simple steps to get your power back: » Stop! • Take a step back, then take a deep breath – let it out slowly. » Shift gears • You are in a negative place. When you are there, you are stuck. You cannot see a way out. The way to move from a negative place to a positive one is to take baby steps away from the negative toward the positive. It’s the “next doable thing” that helps you move from negative to positive. » Decide • Now that you are in a more positive place, you can determine how you want to feel – about yourself, your in-law, and your relationship. You can decide what steps to take to change your relationship to work better for you. Remember, one person CAN change the relationship.

» Action • Deciding to do something is not enough. You have to be willing to take action – to take that first step to improve things. Nothing happens magically. But it will happen once you start to take action. Going through these steps will empower you to think differently and thus act differently. It’s all about getting your power back… empowering yourself to take the steps to change your relationship… to make it better, forever. Dining Etiquette Review It’s been a while since we’ve talked dining etiquette, and this is definitely a subject that needs refining from time to time. More and more I go to business luncheons and dinners and am usually in awe of the lack of skills at the dinner table. I’m not stating this to sound judgmental but to encourage all of us to pay attention to our table manners, because others really do notice, and it sends a message of how much we value the dining experience of those around us.

Here are a few things to remember:

1. Your napkin should remain on your lap until everyone is exiting the table. If you must exit first or during the meal for any reason, place your napkin on your chair, and then upon return, back on your lap. 2. It’s not polite to heap your plate full of food. You should never have food stacked on top of each other. You also don’t want to fill your plate so full that you can’t see the rim of the plate. Think conservative, especially if you’re at a business or professional

74

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE September 2013

luncheon or dinner. 3. Never place your fingers in your mouth for any reason – not to clean your fingers, not to remove food from your teeth, and not to get the last taste of sauce from your hands. 4. It’s polite to only cut one to two bites of food at a time, placing your utensils down in between every one to two bites. 5. Never push your plate away after you’re finished eating to signal that you’re finished. Simply place your utensils side by side at five o’clock with the handles of the utensils slightly off the plate. 6. Never stack plates in order to help clean up the mess when at a restaurant or formal dinner. Only do this when you’re at home or when you have been asked to do so by the host. 7. Never reach across anyone to get something at the table. A simple “please pass the...” is all you need to do. 8. Do your best to keep conversation at the dinner table light, refraining from speaking of too serious of topics or topics that aren’t appropriate, such as gross things, vulgar

things, sad things, or political or religious debates. 9. Always find ways to sincerely compliment the cook or host. 10. Never announce any dislikes while at the table. Simply say “no thank you” if you would not care for something. Hopefully your host knows her manners and will never ask “why not?” These are just a few common mistakes we tend to make while dining with others. Having proper table manners is a great indication of our education level, our ability to show self control, and our sincere interest in the dining experience of those we’re dining with. Happy dining!

Fat Reduction That Works i th fall just around the corner, many of us are preparing for the upcoming holiday parties. Frequently, unwanted body fat taints this image. Fortunately, the science behind the removal of unwanted body fat has evolved. There are now scientifically studied, non-invasive and minimally invasive procedures to help individuals obtain their ideal body shape.

If you can pinch an unwanted inch, the revolutionary Liposonix device may be just the answer to what diet and exercise alone have not been able to accomplish. Liposonix is a new device which utilizes focused ultrasound energy to non-invasively permanently destroy body fat. “1 hour, 1 treatment, 1 size smaller is the moniker for this treatment. In controlled studies, Liposonix patients lost an average of one to two inches from their waistlines with maximum results seen within eight to 12 weeks. The treatment takes approximately one hour and there is no downtime. In fact, there are no post treatment restrictions, and most patients can leave the office and immediately return to their normal activities. Liposonix is different from other non-invasive body contouring devices which can be limited in their ability to treat certain areas

of fat and may require several hours and multiple treatment sessions to adequately address problem areas. The Liposonix system is highly versatile, allowing control over precisely how and where energy is delivered, for a truly customized treatment in a single one-hour session. While Liposonix was cleared in the U.S. by the FDA last year, it is backed by 10 years of extensive study. It has been featured on Dr. Oz, 20/20, The View, and in many of the top beauty magazines such as Allure, Vogue, and Elle. For those that need to lose more than an inch or two, SmartLipo may be the answer. SmartLipo was the first laser cleared by the FDA for the destruction of fat (laser lipolysis). It is a minimally invasive procedure that is an enhancement to the well-established procedure known as tumescent microcannular liposuction. SmartLipo is an in-office procedure that is performed with local anesthesia and requires very little downtime. Most patients are able to return to work in two or three days. Virtually any area with excess fat can be treated with this device. The neck,

arms, abdomen, love handles, and thighs all respond beautifully to this procedure. Patients often ask me how much weight they are going to lose with these procedures. I try to explain that these are body contouring procedures, not weight loss procedures. It is also very important that patients maintain a healthy lifestyle after these procedures. Southeastern Dermatology Consultants is proud to be the exclusive provider of both the Liposonix and SmartLipo procedures in Knoxville. We would enjoy meeting with you to discuss which procedure would best suit your needs. Call to schedule a complimentary consultation and receive discounted pricing through the month of September.
