Why Choose the Institute?

THE ANSWER to this important question can be found in three categories, namely:

EXPERTISE EXPERIENCE COMPASSION

D

r. Jeffrey Dell is currently in his 20th year of practice in Knoxville. He was one of the first physicians in the U.S. to become Subspecialty Board Certified in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS) and founded the Institute 15 years ago to provide a center dedicated to the advancement of female pelvic floor medicine in East Tennessee. In addition to seeing patients from all across East Tennessee, Dr. Dell and the Institute for Female Pelvic Medicine have been a national referral Center of Excellence for the management of complications following surgeries with mesh and slings and have evaluated and performed complex surgical procedures on numerous out-of-state patients from across the U.S. Dr. Dell has published numerous articles in peerreview journals and has lectured extensively nationally and internationally in academic forums. developments in female pelvic floor health is the MonaLisa Touch®. Dr. Dell and the Institute are one of only three training centers in the U.S. where all providers must be trained before beginning to perform the procedure. As such, Dr. Dell has performed hundreds of procedures and has a level of experience and expertise that is unparalleled currently in the U.S. “We have instruments and technology advancements, as well as experience on the treatment of vulvar and external tissues, that other centers currently do not have,” says Dr. Dell. The Institute for Female Pelvic Medicine is completing the U.S. patient trial for the treatment of lichen sclerosis, a painful inflammatory condition affecting many women, and has seen very encouraging results. These evolving treatment protocols are being developed in conjunction with the Italian physicians and engineers who pioneered the technology a few years ago in Florence and Milan. Virtually all questions, issues, or clinical scenarios in the U.S. are funneled through Dr. Dell and the other two training centers on a weekly basis, again providing an unparalleled knowledge of the technology at the teaching centers. Finally, patients who come to Dr. Dell and the Institute for Female Pelvic Medicine for treatment appreciate first-hand not only

the passion he has for what he does, but the compassion he has for his patients and their families. That compassion is also shared by the team members of the Institute who are all considered valued members of the patient support staff. Our vision is to provide a “concierge” level center that is quiet, sophisticated, accommodating, and unlike any other center in the region. Joining Dr. Dell at the Institute are Dr. Lionel McCollum and Teresa DeBusk, Nurse Practitioner, each with more than 30 years experience, to provide all aspects of general gynecology and routine care of women as needed. Double Chin?

Lifestyle

Help Is on the Way! Call Dr. Dean Kleto

A

RE YOU self-conscious about

your “double chin?” Do you wish you could make it go away without Liposuction or surgery? Then KYBELLA™ may be right for you. Dean Kleto, MD, Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, is one of the first and only practitioners in East Tennessee who will be personally injecting KYBELLA™. KYBELLA™ is the first and only FDA approved prescription non-surgical treatment for adults used to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), also called “double chin.” Submental fullness, or “double chin,” is a common facial cosmetic condition impacting women and men. It can be influenced by aging, genetics, and weight gain. Studies have shown that 68% of

people are frustrated with their “double chin,” and an overwhelming majority of those patients treated with KYBELLA™ reported satisfaction with the appearance of their face and chin. KYBELLA™ is deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring molecule in the body, that when injected into the fat beneath the chin causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those fat cells cannot store or accumulate fat, and retreatment is not expected. During your appointment, Dr. Kleto will customize your KYBELLA™ treatment regimen, including the number of treatments you will need depending on your desired chin profile. You will receive a series of injections at each treatment, which will be spaced one month apart. Visible improvement of your chin profile usually occurs in

two to four treatment sessions. Up to six treatments may be necessary. Dr. Kleto is currently scheduling appointments for KYBELLA™, so if your “double chin” is a source of frustration for you, then call his office or visit his website. Dr. Kleto has more than 25 years experience in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in Knoxville and the surrounding area. He received his training in plastic surgery at Duke University Medical Center. Information on future seminars is coming soon!

Richie Furay BABY BOOMERS

are more than a little familiar with the iconic groups Buffalo Springfield and Poco. Buffalo Springfield was made up of Stephen Stills, Neil Young, Dewey Martin, Bruce Palmer, and Richie Furay. Poco consisted of Jim Messina, Rusty Young, George Grantham, Randy Meisner, and, again, Richie Furay. After his stint with these two legendary bands, Richie went on to form his own namesake band that blazed new trails in contemporary Christian music, establishing his mark as one of its influential pioneers. His former work earned him his place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The latter provided him his ultimate calling as minister to a flock of Christians in Colorado. Both roles have given him the ability to influence people well beyond the end of his life. From his Colorado home, Richie chatted about his new CD, “Hand In Hand,” and other things going on in his life. “This album is very current from my perspective,” he said. “I’ve really been thought of as a love songwriter, and these songs are definitely love songs. They’re about my love for life, my love for my wife, my love for my country, my love for what the Lord has blessed me with. The music is as current and as fresh today as anything anybody could hear on the radio.” I asked Richie what he hoped people get or take away from “Hand In Hand.” “I hope that they’ll take away hope. With my life, I’ve gone through different changes, different struggles, different places where I’ve come to a crossroads in my life and asked, ‘Which direction do I go?’ But I’ve always found that there was direction. I will say I didn’t know what that direction was at times, but I did come to find out it was the leading of the Lord. What I hope the people will take away from this is hope. When they’re not sure where things are going in their life, there’s hope. They can read that in the music and the songs that I’ve been sharing.” About his role as a minister, Richie said, “We have a small little church in Broomfield, Colorado, called Calvary Chapel. We are a part of the Calvary Chapel network of churches. When Al Perkins led me to the Lord back in 1974, my wife and I had been married for seven years and separated for seven months. It was a disastrous time in my life, and I had no idea what was going to be taking place in my life. “Things started to change, and I really thought that music was pretty much going to be the end of the road for me. It didn’t turn out to be that way. In the meantime, there was a 12

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE August 2015

little bit of diversion there, and I said, ‘Lord, what would you have me to do?’ He opened up the doors, and I started a little home Bible study. Next thing I know, people are coming around saying, ‘When are we going to have church?’ I said, ‘You know, we’re kinda having it right now.’ They wanted something else, and as it turned out, we started a little church in Boulder, Colorado. Then we moved down to Broomfield, and it’s been so great. “Early on, neither I nor the church congregation that I had at the time understood, and I think there was some question about ‘can you do both?’ Sometimes, people want to say, ‘How can you go out, do this music, and still be a pastor of a church?’ It all flows. I’ve got a very unique position in having a church but still going on the road, traveling, doing concerts. “I’m not out there to proselytize when I go into secular venues. I’m out there to share my life, and the biggest part of my life is the fact

that Jesus Christ has saved me and loves me. He has given me the desires of my heart. He gave me the gift of music, so we always get to share with the people regardless. If they hear ‘A Good Feelin’ to Know’ and ‘Pickin’ Up the Pieces,’ they still hear.” Richie was asked how he wanted to be remembered and what he hoped his legacy would be. “Truly, I want to hear the Lord say, ‘Well done, thou good and faithful servant.’ He didn’t tell me just to preach within the four walls of a church building. He told me to go into all the world and to proclaim His goodness, glory, and salvation. That’s what I want to do. I sincerely believe in my heart that is being accomplished by the response I get from all kinds of people.” You can keep up with Richie and order his music at www.RichieFuray.com and read the expanded version of this interview at www. Boomerocity.com. Photo by Ed Ziehm

History

BY C A R R O L L M C M A H A N

The King’s Academy Has Deep Roots A

S EARLY as the 1840s, there was a

small one-room school in operation on the farm of John S. McCroskey in the community that is now Seymour. This was known as McCroskey School House and was often called Owl College. McCroskey School served the needs of the neighborhood until 1880. Professor John H. McCallie was one of the last to teach in the old school house. He and his brother Sam aroused such interest in school work that there was a demand for a larger building.

McCroskey School, often called Owl College

After attending McCroskey School, John McCallie tried his skills in teaching there. This experience helped him realize the need for more training; therefore, he entered Grant University in Athens, Tennessee. He attended the university during the regular sessions and taught during vacation. After graduating from Grant University, he returned to his home community and began teaching at the McCroskey School where he had attended school as a boy. This was the beginning of what became Harrison-Chilhowee Baptist Academy. The academy was born in the recognition that the McCroskey School, even though it had served well during its day, was no longer adequate for the needs of the education of the youth of the community. With McCallie at the forefront, a charter with the State of Tennessee was drafted in 1881 forming Boyd’s Creek Academy. In 1884, to honor the donation of land to the campus by Harrison Ellis, the school was renamed Harrison Seminary. Churches of the nearby Chilhowee Baptist Association began to provide financial support to the school in 1887, and the Board of Trustees changed the name to Harrison-Chilhowee Institute. A revised state charter in 1932 cemented the school’s affiliation with the Tennessee Baptist Convention and established the

14

school’s identity as Harrison-Chilhowee Baptist Academy. During the first few years of existence, it was primarily a community school. The academy stressed Christian principals throughout its curriculum and activities. Although it had Baptist connections, early brochures clearly indicated “the school excludes none but rather invites all.” From the beginning, facilities were provided for students who had to travel a considerable distance to go to school. By 1889, a girl’s dormitory and several cottages were constructed. The first boy’s dormitory was completed in 1908. Roy Anderson served as president of the institution from 1929 until 1952. As president, Anderson led the school through a difficult period. The school had been left in a precarious situation due a financial crisis brought forth by the Southern Baptist Convention and the Home Mission Board. By the time Roy Anderson resigned 24 years later, the school was experiencing tremendous growth. Walter S. Rule became president of Harrison Chilhowee in 1952. He was the grandson of Uncle Caleb Rule, one of the pioneer Baptist preachers of Sevier County. One of the interests of Rule when he came to the school was to make the ministry of the school available to the children of missionaries. He contacted the Secretary of the Foreign Mission Board, who was thrilled at the opportunity. The Sevier County Board of Education did not have a public school in the community until the mid-1900s. Through a unique public-private school partnership, the Sevier County school board paid the academy to take the county students. A public high school was built across the road in 1961, and the county’s subsidy to the academy ceased at that time. In 1993, the Board of Trustees reorganized the academy and gave distinct names to

The King’s Academy Administration Building

three operations under the HarrisonChilhowee corporate umbrella. Since that time, the elementary and secondary day school and boarding school division has been doing business as The King’s Academy. The Bible Training Center is an adult education program for bi-vocational ministers. The Chilhowee Retreat Center offers academy facilities and services to churches and schools for retreats and music camps, primarily during summer months. Before the advent of the GED high school equivalency program, many older students, particularly married ministerial students with families, returned to school after sensing God’s calling on their lives and earned their diplomas at HarrisonChilhowee. A campus cottage community, called Preacher Street, developed where some of these families lived as they prepared for college and seminary training. Students from more than 80 nations and most states in the U.S. have studied at The King’s Academy. From a crude one-room school called Owl College to a current 67-acre cosmopolitan campus, the school has served the needs of its students well for more than a century and a half.

Top Tips for Getting Your Child Ready for College H

EADING BACK TO SCHOOL can be stressful for

a number of reasons, from new routines and lengthy shopping lists to preparing your students for the year ahead. It becomes even more stressful when you’re faced with the tough task of outfitting a college-bound teen for dorm life. But there’s no need to worry. The following tips will allow you to rest easy and have confidence that your child is prepared for the adventure ahead. Plan-ahead packing Unlike typical back-to-school shopping, college preparation takes a lot more planning. Begin shopping for school supplies and clothes at least two months in advance to avoid last minute stress. Many schools help by providing a shopping list of musthaves for the dorm, including power strips, refrigerators, and toiletry kits – which is a great place to get started. You can also encourage your teen to reach out to their new roommates in advance through social media to discover their likes and dislikes. This can help them learn what kinds of supplies and furniture each person is bringing, so they don’t end up with two microwaves or small refrigerators in what will likely be extremely limited space. Many retailers even allow grads to create a college registry so family and friends know just what to get them. Soon-to-be college students can create an account and handpick specific gifts that range 16

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE August 2015

from dorm room essentials to tailgating supplies, bicycles, and even pepper spray. These retailers also often provide helpful registry guides so you don’t miss a thing. Creating a registry will allow you to start preparations early and shop throughout the summer for items that may not be purchased as a graduation gift, rather than darting out on a mad dash when it’s time to move. Savvy storage If there’s one thing your teen will need to adjust to when going to college, it is dorm life. The rooms are typically a small, bland 200-square foot space with very little storage. And sharing with at least one other person is definitely not luxurious. While preparing for life in such small quarters may feel like a messy situation, it doesn’t mean your teen’s room has to look like one. With a little creativity and know-how, your teen’s home away from home will be an organized, cozy retreat. For storing large items, look no further than under the bed. Use extra-long containers to store clothing, shoes, and other items that require easy and often access. To eliminate clutter, you can also turn empty suitcases from move-in day into storage containers. If you need more space, consider requesting a lofted bed to create more height for additional storage. When closets and horizontal space run out, look to the walls. Reusable hooks help provide added storage to dorm rooms,

allowing your teen to easily organize items such as desk accessories, jewelry, and jackets. Utilize hooks in the closet to organize scarves and hats and by the door to keep keys, umbrellas, and backpacks at hand. These types of hooks are easy to re-position and reuse, which means you can move them – and your belongings – around the room to find the best organizational solution for your new space. Plus the hooks remove cleanly, so you won’t have to worry about damaged walls during move out next spring. Life basics While purchasing the correct supplies is essential, it’s also important to teach your child to become self-sufficient. Show your teen how to do laundry and insist that they do their own clothing, sheets, and towels while still at home. By the time they get to college with a roll of quarters in hand, they’ll have the hang of it. College kids also need basic financial know how. This summer show them the basics of banking, including how to responsibly use an ATM and debit card, write checks, pay bills online, and balance their account. You may also want to set a budget – late night pizza and movie nights can quickly add up – to ensure your teen is responsible enough to manage his or her funds. Sending your teen off to college can be an exciting and emotional time, but with these tips you can make sure they are well equipped to survive dorm life.

Important Information to Help Protect Seniors from Summer Heat S

TAYING COOL during summer

heat isn’t just a question of comfort for senior citizens; it’s a matter of good health. High temperatures can lead to serious heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and older people are at greater risk, no matter where they live, health experts say. As we get older, it gets more difficult for our bodies to manage extreme heat. A number of factors contribute to this problem, including physiological changes, increased use of medications – such as diuretics – that can contribute to dehydration, chronic health conditions, and dementia that may make it difficult for people to recognize thirst or to know how to properly protect themselves from sun and heat. Heat-related deaths occur more frequently among older people than younger age groups, with those older than 75 being substantially more at risk, according to a 2014 National Health Statistics Report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In fact, heatrelated illnesses claimed more than 3,300 lives between 2004 and 2010 – more than 1,200 fatalities occurred among people older than 64. The following is guidance on how seniors and their care-givers can act to prevent heatrelated illnesses: Learn the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are the most serious forms of heat-related illness, and they can be fatal for older people. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, nausea, weakness or fainting, and cold, clammy skin. Heat stroke symptoms include a body temperature higher than 103 degrees Fahrenheit, hot or red skin, a fast pulse, and possible unconsciousness.

18

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE August 2015

If you recognize any of these symptoms in yourself or a senior loved one, seek medical assistance immediately. For heat stroke symptoms, call 911 for help. It’s critical to treat both conditions as quickly as possible. Fight dehydration Seniors can be at particular risk of becoming dehydrated during the day. Normally, when we get hot, our bodies sweat to dissipate the heat, but if you’re dehydrated, the volume of fluid in your body is already depleted. That can impact your vascular system, which can affect your blood pressure. Aging may make you less able to perceive thirst, too, so you may not realize you need fluids. Drink more than you’re thirsty for, especially when exercising or in warmer weather. Eating fruits and vegetables with high water content, like watermelon, is also a good way to increase your fluid intake, especially if you have trouble remembering to drink more. Watch for signs of dehydration, including urine that’s a darker yellow rather than pale or clear. Mild dehydration can lead to heat cramps, and you can combat mild dehydration by simply drinking more. Severe dehydration can lead to heat stroke and may require treatment with intravenous fluids. Be aware of medications’ effect on heatrelated illnesses Most seniors are on at least one type of medication, and diuretics are a common treatment for multiple common disorders, including high blood pressure. Diuretics can contribute to dehydration, and other medications may lower your resistance to the effects of extreme heat. If you’re on a diuretic, increase your water intake during the summer. Be aware that alcoholic beverages may also affect your body’s

ability to regulate temperature. Talk to your doctor about your medications and how they may affect you during times of extreme heat. Be aware of how your medical conditions might elevate your risks Certain medical conditions – such as neuromuscular disorders, cardiovascular disease, and renal disease – can increase your risk of overheating and make you more likely to suffer from heat-related illnesses. People with Alzheimer’s or other dementia may not know when they’re feeling thirsty or too hot and may not be able to communicate how they’re feeling. Be aware that heat can also make medical conditions worse. Heat-related issues can elevate your risk of falling, and falls are a leading cause of hospitalization for seniors. Take steps to stay cool Avoid exercising during the heat of the day, especially outdoors, and monitor weather reports for temperature and air-quality forecasts. Choose exercises like swimming and water aerobics, and consider exercising indoors. Check and change the air-conditioning filters in your home to ensure your air conditioning is working at its best to keep you cool. Choose lightweight, light-colored clothing to help your body stay cool. Protect your skin from sun damage Older skin is less efficient at producing melatonin, so it’s important to wear sunscreen to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. It’s also a good idea to talk with your doctor about taking a vitamin D supplement because, as you age, your skin is less efficient at converting vitamin D into its active form on exposure to the sun. And although sunblock is highly recommended to reduce your risk of sunburn and skin cancer, it can contribute to vitamin D deficiency.

Keeping Your Glass Full

Retirement Planning for a Long Life DOES THINKING

Ali

about retirement leave Swofford, you with a glass half PhD empty feeling when you think about the future? Do you know the variable with the largest impact on whether or not someone will outlive their retirement income? The answer is life expectancy, also known as longevity. Longevity is the new buzzword in retirement planning, and rightfully so. It wasn’t that long ago when most people retired at 65 and maybe lived another five to 10 years if they were lucky. Those days are over, which makes current retirement planning a much more challenging endeavor. People are living much longer, and their retirement nest eggs must live much longer as well. According to the Social Security Administration, a man who reaches the age of 65 today is estimated to live until he is 84.3 years old. A woman turning 65 today is expected to live, on average, until she is 86.6 years of age. In addition to that, 25% of all 65-year-olds today will live past 90 and 10% will live beyond 95. This dramatic increase in life spans is expected to continue well into the future. So how can you prepare for the long road ahead? How can you get back that glass half full feeling about retirement when you might live another 20 or 30 years? You need a plan. A great financial planning expert can identify investment opportunities best suited to your stage of life, tolerance for risk, and long term quality of life needs. Consulting a financial planning expert is a great first step toward planning your retirement. Want to learn more about retirement planning and raise a glass to your future? You’re invited to drop by August 27th anytime between 4:30 to 6:30 pm at Swofford Financial for a Wine Tasting and Open House. HE DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS

of modern medicine are remarkably useful and valuable. The ability to determine precisely which tasks undertaken by the body are malfunctioning has reached heights even the most imaginative forward thinkers of the past never conceived. Yet long before these technological wonders are able to identify specific conditions or disorders, our own bodies have sent us messages daily that warn us of the coming affliction. These messages can be very subtle, but if you pay close attention, you can discover that your direction may need a change. Even though there are many reasons for fatigue, fatigue can be an indication that either the amount of fuel or oxygen, or both, is insufficient. Of course after a day of labor we need to rest to restore our energy, but persistent, longlasting fatigue on a daily basis can be an indication that we are not properly nourishing ourselves. Often this is masked by the use of stimulants, but if we find it necessary to resort to this, our long-term health is being undermined. Steady energy is supported by the regular use of complex carbohydrates, chiefly found in whole grains and legumes. Keen appetite, for both food and life, is an indication of well-being. This is not meant to imply that overeating is healthy. Rather, if we have an appetite for the most simple and unprocessed

food, we are more likely to prevent becoming ill as we age. Sleeping deeply allows your body to detoxify itself through the night more efficiently. The more deeply you sleep, the less you will need and the more refreshed you will feel upon awakening. If you sleep restlessly or intermittently, you can know that your body is retaining toxins, which will eventually lead to disease or disorder. Good memory and judgment are not just agreeable traits to possess. They forecast a life unencumbered by accidents or mistakes that lead to affliction and turmoil. A strong func t i oni ng ne r vous system is dependent upon the consumption of good quality minerals on a regular basis. Lastly, but perhaps the most revealing, are our emotions. Anger, fear, worry, sadness, mania, and other psychological expressions are both the result of and the creators of underlying pathological conditions. As we turn to a more balanced and simple diet, our emotions become more balanced as a result, and in turn, the reduction of stress from emotional imbalance enhances our ability to remain healthy. Pursuing our own health should be a priority. Experts now agree that lifestyle contributes to 85% of our health. Understanding that our bodies give us clues as to the status of our health and knowing how to read these clues becomes a great compass for well-being.

Note: Consult your healthcare professional before making any dietary changes. These articles and recipes are not intended to diagnose or treat any illness.

Educator Profile

BY C O U R T N E Y C R A I G

Samantha Roloff Massey

S

AMANTHA ROLOFF MASSEY is a great teacher because

she learned an important lesson early on: Put the students first. That philosophy has served her well, as the West High School English teacher has been selected as a Fellow in the 2015-2016 Tennessee Educator Fellowship, one of only 26 teachers in Tennessee to receive the honor. “I am so excited to be a SCORE Tennessee Educator Fellow this year,” she said. “It will allow me to learn more about the policies that impact my students and teachers like me. I hope to bring a deeper understanding of these policies to my fellow teachers.” Samantha has taught at West High for four years. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Freed-Hardeman University in West Tennessee and is currently in the M.Ed. program at the University of Tennessee. “I had a couple of effective teachers in high school who really put students first,” she said. They inspired me to want to teach students and help them prepare for life after high school. It was these teachers who helped me look past myself as a child and see myself as a

community member. I have always wanted to do the same thing for students. I love my community and serve it by teaching its youth and preparing them for their futures.” Samantha gets to school early every day to prepare her classroom. Before each class, she outlines the day’s goals for her students and explains the purpose of the lesson. “Most of my classes involve group work, and this is where I get to move from group to group and really speak to every student,” she said. “It is important to me that my students learn to work together and independently. Likewise, there is always a sharing part of the class. I believe that the skills they will need in the future include reading, writing, working together, and presenting or talking in front of others. I try to give them opportunities to develop these skills every day.” Samantha also collaborates with other

teachers to ensure they work together to provide the most effective instruction. “I’m lucky that I work with a team with four other ninth grade English teachers who help share this load,” she said. “Sometimes there isn’t enough time to do everything we want on our own. It is imperative that we work together, and we always do.” Teaching is undoubtedly hard work, but when Samantha sees a lesson click for a student, it’s all worth it. “I love working with my students,” she said. “Seeing them interact and grow throughout the year is so exciting. I love hearing a student say something like, ‘I really get this now’ or ‘I can write!’”

Six Red Cross Tips to Stay Safe When Temperatures Soar

E

XTREME HEAT has been a staple this

summer, and the American Red Cross reminds everyone of the steps they should take to stay safe when the temperatures

rise. “High temperatures, humidity, and hot, indoor environments can quickly cause heat-related emergencies,” said Michelle Hankes, East Tennessee Executive Director. “Excessive heat can lead to sunburn, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.” The Red Cross has some simple steps to help beat the heat: » Never leave children or pets alone in vehicles. The temperature inside can reach a dangerous level within a few minutes. » Slow down, take frequent breaks, and drink more water than usual – even if you’re not thirsty. » Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing. » If working outdoors, take frequent breaks and use the buddy system. » Check on family, friends, and neighbors who do not have air conditioning, who spend much of their time alone, or who are more likely to be affected by the heat. » If possible, bring animals inside. If not, frequently check to ensure they are comfortable and have water 22

and a shady place to rest. The free Red Cross Emergency App provides instant access to expert heat safety tips. Users also have the option of receiving alerts for excessive heat watches, warnings, and heat advisories. The Red Cross Pet First Aid App has steps pet owners should take to help keep their furry friends safe during hot weather. You can find the apps in your app store by searching for American Red Cross and at www.redcross.org/apps. You can learn how to prevent and respond to heatrelated and other emergencies by taking a Red Cross First Aid and CPR/AED or Advance Child Care Training course. A variety of online and in-class options are available. Course and registration information is available at www.redcross.org/takeaclass. About the American Red Cross The American Red Cross shelters, feeds, and provides emotional support to victims of disasters, supplies about 40% of the nation’s blood, teaches skills that save lives, provides international humanitarian aid, and supports military members and their families. 1964 “THE TRIBUTE”

AUGUST 8 • 8 PM • TENNESSEE THEATRE

TWENTY YEARS of research and performing have made “1964” masters of their craft. They have been featured on Entertainment Tonight, PM Magazine, CNN, the USA Network, and the Nashville Network. On January 10th, 2003, “1964” performed to a sold out crowd at Carnegie Hall… a dream come true for both themselves and their fans who came to New York from all across the country for the show. They have since performed at Carnegie Hall every year since then.

1964 has performed at many other such illustrious places such as the famous Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Denver, where they outdrew The Beatles by 2,000 fans 40 years later. Choosing songs from the pre-Sgt. Pepper era, 1964 “The Tribute” astonishingly recreates an early 60s live Beatles concert, with period instruments, clothing, hairstyles, and onstage banter. Come see why 1964 “The Tribute” is the definitive Beatle show!

Peyton Manning Draws Thousands at Chamber Event

I

N LATE JUNE,

the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce held its 9th Annual Benefit Dinner with speaker Peyton Manning. Several thousand people attended representing 13 different states and 128 different cities. The age range was from a two-month-old baby to a 96-year-old grandmother. The five-time NFL Most Valuable Player did not disappoint the crowd as he received multiple standing ovations. Before getting into the main part of his speech, he humorously spoke about a few of his business dealings and TV commercials with Nationwide, Papa John’s Pizza, and the comedy routines on Saturday Night Live. He stated that now when people come up to him, they don’t speak, they do it in a jingle (in the same tune as the Nationwide commercials). In his speech, Manning listed seven characteristics of game-changers, which included

learn to thrive on being uncomfortable, devote yourself to intense meticulous preparations, invest in a coach, cultivate trust, don’t be stymied by change – be stimu lated by it, become a master obser ver, st op a nd look at things that no one else has bothered to look at, and understanding the sustained power and influence that flows from a leader’s relationship with others. After the speech, he answered some questions that had previously been submitted. One question that was on a lot of peoples’ minds is whether he’d ever think of entering coaching after he retires from playing. His response was, “I don’t think I’d be a very good coach. People in Tennessee like me. If I were to coach, that number would be cut in half.” We spoke to several people after the event, and one 81-year-old stated, “This was an evening I will never forget – one of the best of my life!” August 2015 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

Classic Q Band Kicks off Hot Summer Nights Concert Season at Blount County Public Library NEW TO THE AREA, the Classic Q Band

is a classic rock band whose members are feeling right at home in East Tennessee. Quincy Follweiler, band organizer, says, “Our goal was to be authentic in our approach to the music. We knew we were an original band, and I wanted to be authentic to my roots in music genre: Classic Rock. That term covered so much when I was growing up, from heavier sounds of Zeppelin to songwriter-driven rock. All we knew was that we would do whatever came natural without trying to be like anyone else.” The Classic Q Band will kick off this season’s Hot Summer Nights concert series at the Blount County Public Library on August 6 at 7 pm. Audiences are invited to enjoy this year’s concerts at 7 pm on every Thursday evening from August 6 through September 3. The concerts, sponsored by the Blount County Friends of the Library, will all be held indoors in the air-conditioned climate of the library. The Classic Q Band concept came in winter 2012. Quincy, being new to East Tennessee, decided to start a brand new project by stepping away from the name “Sons of Levi” that he had carried in four other CD projects. Quincy and Jamie have been playing music together for years (yes, they are father and daughter), so that was a given. Next on board was Barry Cochran on bass guitar. In early 2013, the band was formed, but then had to transition to a new drummer after Don Page moved away. Seven auditions later, in mid2014, John DiCrosta fit right into the style of the Classic Q Band. In October 2014, the band began recording its first CD project, “Inside-World,” which was released in April 2015 with Jeff Ervin mixing and mastering under the helm of Wandering Gypsy Recording at The Mothership. Although in previous years Quincy had completed four other CD projects, he is excited about the energy in this current CD. “Being a product of our generation, we grew up listening to all the greats,” says Quincy. “We have all been influenced by them in some way. Original, and authentically classic, that’s who we are. As a band we do not try to be anything else. Strong musical hooks, grooves, and memorable lyric lines are what we strive for.” The members of CQB have plenty of professional experience and talent and, of course, love all the greats that are far too many to mention here. So they will be adding a few of their favorite classic rock tunes to the Classic Q Band set lists, and they hope you like what you hear. “We are primarily an original band with a few cool classics sprinkled in,” says Quincy. “Guitars, bass, drums, and melodic vocals

with plenty of hooks and groove. Our songs are mostly faith based in that they come from our experiences in our walk of faith. Lots of music, not too preachy.” They are a family-friendly band, so there won’t be any foul language or songs that aren’t appropriate for all ages. Quincy Follweiler, vocals and guitar, says he’s never stopped learning playing. Throughout the years, he has played extensively all across the country in festivals, concerts, conferences, camps, bike rallies, coffee houses, Houses of Worship, and every wide spot in the road. He says he enjoyed it all and is excited about “the Classic Q Band and the great people I get to play music with. Music is my passion, and I will continue to play as long as the Good Lord allows. All honor and Glory belongs to Him. I am just thankful that I get to ride along.” Madison Moore, vocals, acoustic guitar, and percussion, grew up around music and has an amazing ability to find harmonies. She and her father have been a dynamic duo for years, and she has been on four full-length CDs. Jamie does all the backup arrangements for The Classic Q Band. Barry “Kaboom” Cochran, bass guitar, brings the thunder to the band. Heavily influenced early on by Led Zepelin, REO Speedwagon, Rush, and many others, Barry played piano, drums, and guitar. In the mid-1980s, he played on church worship teams. In the 1990s, he switched to bass guitar, bridging his

experience with drums and guitar. John DiCrosta, drums, was born in Schnectady, New York, learning to read music and play drums during fifth grade. Throughout middle school and high school, he played clarinet, alto sax, bass guitar, and all percussion instruments. Winning first and second place awards in high school stage/jazz band throughout the state of New York, he played bass guitar and drums and began his love affair with jazz music. He studied under Chuck Mangione, earned a BA in music performance at UCF, and followed a brief stint as a Disney musician. It may be the only town around where salaried songwriters and fulltime session musicians are as common as accountants and schoolteachers. Music is the product, and the factories line the street, from the swank Music Row mini-high-rises to the low-slung Sylvan Park bungalows. Only Nashville could give birth to a band like The SteelDrivers: A group of seasoned veterans – each distinguished in his or her own right, each valued in the town’s commercial community – who are seizing an opportunity to follow their hearts to their souls’ reward. In doing so, they are braiding their bluegrass roots with new threads of their own design, bringing together country, soul, and other contemporary influences to create an unapologetic hybrid that is old as the hills but fresh as the morning dew. This is new music with the old feeling. The SteelDrivers fan Vince

Gill describes the band’s fusion as simply “an incredible combination.” Since the release of The SteelDrivers (2008) and Reckless (2010), The SteelDrivers have been nominated for three Grammys, four IBMA awards, and the Americana Music Association’s New Artist of the Year. They were presented the International Bluegrass Music Association’s award for Emerging Artist of the Year in 2009. That same year the band spent a week in Georgia as part of the cast in the movie “Get Low.” The movie, starring Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek, and Bill Murray, featured a soundtrack that included four tunes by The ‘Drivers. In 2011, the English pop star Adele began performing The SteelDrivers song “If It Hadn’t Been for Love” in her live performances. Her opinion of The SteelDrivers is: “They’re a blues, country, bluegrass, swagger band, and they are brilliant.” They have been invited to perform on numerous radio and TV shows ranging from The Grand Ole Opry, to NPR’s Mountain Stage, to the Conan O’Brien show.

When Bad Things Happen to Good People EVERY SO OFTEN I

have someone ask me what the most common mistake I see in tax planning is. Without a doubt, it’s when people have not updated the beneficiary designations on ALL of their pre-tax and tax-deferred investment accounts. Yvonne Marsh, CPA Why is that so important? The beneficiary designation form is really the “will” for all of these types of accounts, which include 401ks, 403bs, IRAs, pension plans, and annuities. The beneficiary form trumps the will. So if you’ve remarried and updated your will, but your beneficiary forms still reflect your first wife, guess who inherits your assets? Some clients have named their estate as the beneficiary or intentionally not named a beneficiary so that those assets will pass under the will, but that is a tax planning mistake that can cost your heirs thousands of dollars. Heirs have to pay tax on these types of accounts, but if they are named as specific beneficiaries, the IRS allows for them to “stretch” their inheritance over their lifetime, taking only a portion of it into income each year. But if they are not named, they have to take their inheritance according to the terms of the will, which can quickly push them into the top tax brackets. There goes up to 40% of your hard-earned money to the government in taxes… all because the beneficiary forms weren’t completed properly. Separate rules apply when a spouse inherits these accounts that limits the tax due. A common mistake though is that an individual has named a spouse as primary beneficiary and thinks that is sufficient. But what if they are in a common car accident and both pass at the same time? With no contingent beneficiaries named, you’re back to the same tax problem. So you see, estate tax planning is not just for the rich – it’s for everyone. Our Family Estate Organizer process is the first step in making sure your plans are in place. It will save your loved ones heartache, and headache, in the future. And it will save you and your heirs taxes, perhaps now and certainly in the future. Call today for a complimentary appointment to learn more.

The 15-Minute Remodel: Transform Any Room into a Work of Art AIR RETURN vents are in all our homes;

however, little is done to hide these necessary items. Those white vents aren’t things of beauty. You can’t cover them up or bury them behind furniture. Many homeowners resign themselves to the fact that they’ll just have to live with those eyesores. Wel l, t here’s a bet ter way w it h Fancy Vents, who manufactures cast iron and steel cold Before After air return vents. Cindy Moore co-founded the business with her late husband, Earl, a skilled metal artisan. He created the first “Fancy Vent” for their home in his basement shop. The decorative iron return air grill quickly became a popular conversation piece for visitors, and some suggested they sell the pieces. So, Cindy created flyers and placed them on mailboxes near her home. They began discussing the possibility of a real business opportunity when at least three months of orders poured in. By mid-2008, Fancy Vents, Inc. was born. With more than 100 designs, there is a Fancy Vent to fit any décor. Choose from traditional designs such as the “Glory” or the “Gothic” or select a more contemporary design such as the “Valenti” or the “Modern.” Also, all of the vent covers are available in six finishes and almost any size. “We’ve created vents in standard and odd sizes,” said Cindy. “You can choose from existing designs, and we also build themed designs such as beach scenes for homes in Florida, Western themes for homes in Montana, and the Texas star for homes in Texas. If we can cast it, we can make it.” It’s not just the quality workmanship that makes Fancy Vents shine. Their commitment and dedication to a high level of customer service from the design phase and beyond installation sets them apart. Keeping things personal and “made to order” is part of their business model. The best part is the vents’ functionality. The vents are easy to clean, and you can open them with one finger so you don’t break your fingernails. All designs have been tested to ensure functionality and that they meet or exceed HVAC airflow specifications. It seems that something that adds so much character to a home would be hard to install, but almost anyone can complete a DIY installation by watching the “15-Minute Remodel” video at www. fancyvents.com.

STOP!

BUILDING A HOME is overwhelming. You

stay up late at night staring at floor plans until your eyes cross and your brain hurts. Before you lock in the contract and start pouring the foundation, here are a few items for your consideration: » Do you have a hallway or intersection with overlapping doors knocking into each other? Solution to consider: Pocket doors. » Multiple spaces allocated to dining: Do you really need a formal dining room, breakfast room, and a breakfast bar? Solution: Consolidate space with an open floor plan. Create a cohesive arrangement with a family room/kitchen/dining combination. » Windows in the corner of a room leave inadequate corner space. Solution: Window jamb needs to be a minimum of 8” from a corner to accommodate window treatments of 18” to 24” if you need room for furniture. » Installing every gadget: There is little return on your investment in this category. They often fade out or become obsolete. Solution: Smart stations/charging stations are all the rage. Place these in a cabinet or drawer so they are not in plain sight when no longer in use. The following may not make the most sense long term, but live a little! They will certainly add that touch of personality that’s fundamental in a custom home.

Are You Enjoying Your Home’s Outdoor Living Spaces to Their Fullest? IF YOUR HOME ISN’T equipped with

retractable screens, the answer is likely no. Why? Because the hot summer sun and biting insects are probably keeping you indoors. But there’s a solution. Homeowners across the country are increasingly creating popular outdoor “rooms” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially made to be weather-proof. Unfortunately, the hot afternoon sun and biting insects often keep homeowners from using their new outdoor living spaces. Retractable screens provide an answer to these problems. By combining indoor and outdoor spaces, these innovative screen solutions enhance and promote the outdoor living experience. They provide shade and allow people to enjoy the outof-doors during hot summer days, extending the time spent on patios while keeping annoying, biting insects at bay. Large, motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of a building, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. One of the best features of retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish your views or your home’s esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many of the retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. These retractable screens are available in a variety of custom colors and wood grain finishes to complement your home’s interior or exterior color schemes. The screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and be connected to your home’s automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection are called for. For more information about retractable screen options, visit www.phantomscreens.com.

INKING SLABS are a common problem among many homes in the Knoxville area. In fact, some concrete slabs will continue to get worse over time and eventually require replacement. It’s important to understand and fix these issues before they become too severe. Not only could sinking slabs become a tripping hazard for your family and guests, but they could also lead to a more expensive solution and destroy your home’s curb appeal. We highly recommend that you take a few minutes to review your concrete surfaces and consider getting a FREE inspection, courtesy of Master Concrete Lifting. What to look for The first thing you should do is check for sunken concrete slabs, as these are the most obvious and severe symptoms. The Great Smoky Mountain Film Festival to Feature Rare Home Movies and the 1927 Silent Classic, Stark Love, at the Tennessee Theatre on August 15th

T

ENNESSEE ARCHIVE of Mov-

ing Image and Sound (TAMIS) and its partners, the East Tennessee Historical Society, Friends of the Library, and the Historic Tennessee Theatre, will host a day of film screenings featuring rare home movies and films focusing on the Smoky Mountains. TAMIS, a department of the Knox County Public Library, holds the largest and most diverse collection of Smoky Mountain home movie footage in the state of Tennessee, including the collections of Jim Thompson, Jack Huff, the Smoky Mountain Hiking Club, Arrowmont School, and others. Part of the East Tennessee History Fair, this event will be unique and exciting for East Tennesseans, as many of these films have never been shown publicly. Daytime screenings, beginning at noon, will be free and open to the public and will feature a variety of films. Highlights include the earliest recorded footage of the Smoky Mountains, home movies of Cades Cove, and clips of Knoxville and the Smokies from the Jim Thompson Collection. Local musicians will provide live music to accompany the silent films. The film festival will culminate in a ticketed screening of the 1927 Paramount feature Stark Love. Included in 2009 to the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically” significant, this silent classic was lost for decades before turning up in a European archive. Stark Love was cast almost exclusively with amateur actors and filmed entirely in the Great Smoky Mountains near Robbinsville, North Carolina. Helen Mundy, a Knoxville teenager discovered in a local drugstore by Paramount talent scouts, gives a riveting performance as a free-spirited mountain girl destined to escape the confining traditions of life in the hills of Appalachia. The male lead in the film was Forrest James, father of Fob James, 48th governor of Alabama. Directed by pioneering filmmaker Karl Brown, Stark Love was a critical success when released in 1927, lauded for its realism and documentary-style approach to filmmaking. The film, however, performed poorly at the box office and promptly disappeared. Stark Love has stood the test of time and is now considered a classic of its era when viewed by modern audiences. Recently restored by the Museum of Modern Art with support from the Celeste Bartos Fund for

Film Preservation, the new 35mm motion picture preservation print of Stark Love is on loan from MOMA. Rex Ward, house organist for Bristol’s Paramount Theatre, will improvise a score live at the Tennessee’s Mighty Wurlitzer to accompany the film. Lost Masterpiece, a documentary about the making of Stark Love, will precede the feature. Filmmaker and historian, Dr. John White, will introduce the documentary, and Jack Neely, Director of the Knoxville History Project, will introduce Stark Love. This ticketed portion of the festival begins at 7:00 pm. Schedule of films: Free events: 12:00 pm - Dr. Bill Snyder performs on the Tennessee Theatre’s mighty Wurlitzer organ 12:20 pm - The Motion Picture Films of Jim Thompson, 1915-1950 1:30 pm - Picturing the Smokies: Vintage Views of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, 1920s-1960s 2:45 pm - From the Vaults: The Heartland Series, 1989 The Rolling Store episode and its outtakes (WBIR-TV) 3:45 pm - Sounds and Silents: Found Footage and Mountain Melodies

» Silent Town; Music accompaniment by Todd Steed » Our Southern Mountaineers / In the Moonshine Country (Paramount-Bray, 1918); Music accompaniment by Dave Ball » A Forgotten Smoky Mountain Road Trip, circa 1938; Music accompaniment by The Swill Sippers Ticketed event: 7:00 pm - Lost Masterpiece: Karl Brown’s Stark Love (2011); Introduction by filmmaker and historian Dr. John White followed by Stark Love (Paramount, 1927) with an introduction by Jack Neely, The Knoxville History Project. Music accompaniment by Rex Ward on the Wurlitzer organ. About the Tennessee Archive of Moving Image and Sound Knox County Public Library’s Tennessee Archive of Moving Image and Sound is dedicated to preserving the moving image and audio heritage of East Tennessee. This unique archive contains films from as early as 1915. Its moving image collection currently contains more than 5,000 reels and videotapes of home movies, documentaries, advertisements, industrial and training films, commercial films, television programming and newsreels, all with local or regional connections. Its audio collection includes vintage radio programming, sound recordings, and oral histories and field recordings from the region, which date back to the 1930s. The Archive works to preserve these rare pieces of East Tennessee history and make them accessible to the public. August in the Garden B EFORE I BEGIN

your to-do list, let’s talk a little about the birds and the bees. Don’t get excited, I’m talking about pollinators. Birds, bees, butterflies, and bats play a critical role in gardening by taking pollen from one plant to another. This pollination is responsible for about one-third of the food we eat. Without these little guys, our diet would be severely limited! Unfortunately, some of our best pollinators are facing a dramatic reduction in population due to diseases, parasites, chemical overuse, and lack of habitat. Honeybees are facing colony collapse disorder, and the Monarch butterfly population has been reduced by 90%. We can help the pollinators we have left by creating gardens that attract, feed, and house them. Here are some hints: » Go native. Many pollinators prefer native plants, which are often easier to care for anyway. You can find lists of native plants online, or give us a call. » Plan for a long bloom season. Try

to have something blooming in your yard from early spring until fall. If you will plant pansies for the winter, that is even better. » Plant generously. It is better to have a larger area of one plant than one each of several plants. On the other hand, you also want to have a diverse assortment of color, fragrance, and shapes. Bees like blue, purple, white, and yellow. Butterflies like red and purple. Bats like fragrant flowers that bloom at night. » Include herbs, vegetables, and fruit. Pollinators love the flowers, so consider letting plants that have bloomed or bolted stay around for them. » Provide a food and water source. Use birdfeeders and birdbaths to attract birds, and put out small, shallow bowls of water for butterflies. » Use pesticides responsibly. Follow labels closely and avoid spraying when pollinators are active. In general, spray in the evening after the bees have gone back to their hive, and don’t spray the blooms unless absolutely necessary.

Now it’s time for the to-do list. Don’t worry, I know none of you are overly anxious to get out and work in your yard, so I’ll keep the list short. » When is the last time you had a good look around? If it’s been more than a couple of weeks, take a walk in your yard and see what’s going on. The damp weather has caused a vast outbreak of several fungal diseases, so give us a call if you need treatment help. Powdery mildew, rust, black spot, shot-hole, and other diseases can be controlled if you use the right product. There are also bugs galore. Bring in your little baggies of samples, or give us a call if something is eating your plants. » Some of your annuals are probably looking sad. Give them a haircut and some fertilizer, or yank them out and plant something new. Life is too short for ugly plants. » Perennials may also be getting floppy and leggy. Most will do well with a good shaping. If there’s new growth at the bottom, you can cut it all the way down to the new growth. Call if you have questions. » August is a good time to divide daylilies and iris. I usually dig up the whole clump of daylilies and cut it up if the clump is small. If you have a large group, just use a shovel to dig out part of it. For irises, I check for rhizomes that are holey or mushy and throw them away. The others I plant in a shallow trench. Don’t bury them! One-third of the rhizome should be above the ground. » If you have mophead or oakleaf hydrangeas and you need to prune them, the end of August is a good time. They only rest for four to six weeks after they stop blooming, and then they set bud for next year. Pruning after September means bye-bye blooms! » Don’t prune anything else unless it’s broken, diseased, or completely out of control. » Plant summer and fall blooming perennials to continue the color throughout the season. » Weed! My goal is to pull 20 weeds every morning as I walk across my yard on the way to work. I’m not making much progress. The weeds are winning. » Clean up veggie gardens as plants die back and make plans for next year. You can also plant broccoli, cabbage, kale, and cauliflower late in the month. That’s it for this month, except I do want to remind you that Lindsay is back from maternity leave and ready to do landscape consultations again. Schedule a visit now while she has plenty of openings. We have lots of great things, so come by and see us!

Hummingbird Fest and Canopy Adventures at Ijams

IN THE HEAT of August, most birds are

quiet. Their activity level slows, but not hummingbirds. Their pace quickens as they begin to fatten up for their long migration back to the tropics where they spend their winters. If you have a hummingbird feeder outside, refresh it often with new sugar water. To celebrate everyone’s favorite feathered pixie, hummer-aholics can also attend the fifth annual “Wonder of Hummingbirds Festival” on Saturday, August 22. The festival is a joint fundraiser for the Knoxville Chapter of the Tennessee Ornithological Society (KTOS) and Ijams Nature Center. The festival hours are from 8 am to 2 pm, and admission is $5.

The highlight, as always, is Mark Armstrong, Curator of Birds at the Knoxville Zoo and licensed hummingbird bander. Mark and his team will be catching hummers and placing bands on their tiny legs. Come early for the opportunity to see ruby-throated hummingbirds up close at the banding. Also, this year’s festival will feature guest speakers David Pitts discussing “The Hummingbirds that Nest in Your Yard;” David Unger, “Predators and Bears;” Chris Ogle, “Golden Eagles in Tennessee;” and Ijams staffer Stephen Lyn Bales, “The Secrets of Backyard Birds.” Ijams vet Dr. Louise Conrad will address everything you need to know about black rat snakes, and local wildlife rehabilitator Lynne McCoy will exhibit her various birds of prey and mammals. There will also be guided nature walks and vendors selling food and drinks, locally made arts and crafts, bird feeders and supplies, garden items, and other merchandise with hummingbird and nature-related themes.

NAVITAT KNOXVILLE

Get a bird’s eye view of the world. The Ijams Canopy Experience is now open. Navitat Knoxville’s tree-based zipline adventure park at Ijams is designed to thrill, educate,

and inspire. With more than 60 adventure elements – from ziplines and bridges to swings, nets, elevated tunnels, and more – the park is a treetop wonderland full of surprises. The canopy park features six different elevated “adventure trails,” unique educational themes, and environmental artwork. Treetop adventurers are always secured to safety lines. They can choose their own adventure, either by sticking to the easier trails or challenging themselves to conquer the more difficult trails. For more information, visit www.navitat.com/knoxville-tn.

NATURE ALMANAC

Even though the birds are quiet, nature is not silent in August. Listen for the drones and calls of cicadas and katydids in the trees. It’s the males that do the calling in the hope of attracting females. Also in the meadows, the wildflowers are blooming and the butterflies are fluttering. As always, Ijams welcomes you in all seasons, 12 months of the year. Stephen Lyn Bales is senior naturalist at Ijams and the author of Natural Histories and Ghost Birds published by UT Press and available in the Ijams gift shop. August 2015 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

Do’s and Don’ts of Successful Furniture Placement MANY MISTAKES in furniture place-

ment are made because it’s difficult for many people to visualize the three-dimensional effect of furniture in advance. A floor plan is a necessary ingredient of furniture placement pre-planning, but you must also take into consideration the dimensional qualities of furniture as well! We create a 3D design layout that gives you the sense of standing in the room – all done to the proper scale. This is where a professional designer’s expertise will save you time and costly mistakes! Here are a few guidelines to successful space planning: DON’T block a view from a picture window – especially if it’s a good one! Placing tall chairs and a lamp on a table placed in the center of a picture window is a big no-no. Choice and placement of furniture should complement, not conflict, with architectural features. DO plan a furniture grouping that won’t conflict with your window. A sofa might fit below it, flanked by two end tables with lamps – creating symmetrical furniture grouping and allowing your picture window to take center stage. DON’T place only wooden pieces of

furniture along one wall or at one end of a room. Too many wooden pieces in one cluster tend to have a cold, inhospitable look. DO mix wooden pieces with upholstered furniture for texture contrast and interest. Polished wood tones look richer when contrasted by handsome fabric and vice versa. DON’T use too many matched pairs of tables, lamps, or chairs in one room. Matching

pieces help unify a room, but too many pairs will make your room resemble a furniture store. DO achieve variety by choosing some similar but not exactly matching pieces to balance each other. Two non-matching lamps of similar size and shape, for instance, would be the perfect solution. Why not let Decorating Den Interiors help you achieve that perfect furniture arrangement? Call today for your complimentary consultation! Sandy’s work has been featured in Canadian House & Home, and she recently won a People’s Choice award for her designs.

Remove That Wall! T HE CONTEMPORARY

house design boasts a large open common area, known as “the great room,” composed of the kitchen, living, and dining areas. The great room is prime for family and friend gatherings and a general feeling of freedom and openness within a home. However, the more traditional layout we see while doing remodels keeps these rooms separated and secluded and is often a problem area for homeowners. It is amazing to see how taking out a wall can make such a huge impact on a space, but unfortunately, we cannot go knocking down walls as we please. Certain walls are loadbearing and necessary in keeping the roof of the home from caving in. But no worries! It is possible to take out a load-bearing wall with

Home

BEFORE

AFTER conscious planning and design. If you are looking to get rid of a wall in your home, the first step is to determine whether or not it is actually load-bearing. If you are unfamiliar with how to decipher which walls are load-bearing or not, it is a good idea to consult a structural engineer. The engineer will be able to confirm the wall structure and tell you how large your supporting beam needs to be. This supporting beam, often called a LVL, will replace the wall by diverting the load of the structure to either side of the beam, allowing your space to become open. If the wall is non load-bearing, you may simply continue demolition by removing the sheetrock and studs, which is also a great form of stress relief. If the wall is

load-bearing, the contractor or installer will temporarily support the wall, complete removal, install the supporting beam, and complete any necessary repairs. Removing a wall is well worth the extra time and cost. At Shae Design Studio, we can help you envision your space as an open concept and help you transform your space into something that caters to your lifestyle. Building a “She” Business in a “He” Marketplace

J

ENNY BLALOCK is the president

of Luxe Homes and Design, a 14-year-old company that designs and builds high-end custom homes. The company is committed to using materials and craftsmanship that are true to a home’s architectural intent, while incorporating the latest technologies and sustainability. But as a woman, Jenny has a unique advantage over her competition: She knows precisely what women want in a new home. It’s this unique insight that’s helped Jenny to establish an enviable track record of satisfied homeowners, while earning the respect and admiration of her peers at the same time. When building a home, Jenny’s primary consideration is to determine the nuances of her clients’ lives and how they will live in each space. She also carefully considers the architectural style of the neighborhood. “We build a product that works for the area and positively impacts the landscape, while still meeting the unique and individual needs of our clients,” she said. Although Jenny builds for a diverse group of clients – from single people, to families, to empty nesters – she finds that she designs with women in mind. “I know all of the things that women manage in a household on a daily basis, and that carries into my design work,” said Jenny. “I look for ways to make everyday household activities more efficient. You’ll see it in my consideration of storage space – layouts that work for moms and kids, nooks and crannies for children to store toys and/or arts and crafts, flexible laundry spaces, pet stations, etc. I think through how each person will live in the home and design accordingly. I love designing floor plans and building their homes, and I love creating the unique designs that will meet the individual lifestyle needs of each family member.” Overall, in today’s market, Jenny says homeowners want features such as an open kitchen and family areas, media rooms, and homes designed with long-term planning in mind, including main floor masters. She has also noticed a trend toward smaller homes that are well designed and not oversized. As an entrepreneur in the building industry, Jenny has not found it difficult to work and succeed in a male-dominated industry. “I am a very determined individual and one who embraces challenges,” she said. “It’s not that difficult for people to understand a woman in the business as long as she is a designer or works for a supplier, but it seems that people have a difficult time wrapping their minds around a woman owner of a construction business, someone who Photos by Beth Fellhoelter

can help you select your tile and discuss your foundation.” When she launched her company in 2001, her goal was to make the home building process enjoyable for clients. That meant absorbing much of the stress experienced by homeowners during the design/ build process herself. She’s often awake at nights, walking through construction sites in her mind. “Being a homebuilder is a little like being a wedding planner,” said Jenny. “Emotions run deep. Everything has to go as smoothly and as organized as possible, and I take all

my clients homes very personal. I do this by embracing one fundamental objective – creating a truly unique “home” for each and every client. It All Started With a License Plate LET ME APOLOGIZE up front that this

article has little to do with cleaning. Every so often we have an opportunity to explain to new friends how we got started with this company, and since it’s been several years since we’ve written about how it all came to be, we wanted to take this opportunity to share our story with you. Back in 2008, my husband John was working 60+ hours as a restaurant manager, and I was busy at home raising three children. If you’ve ever worked in restaurants, then you know the hours aren’t ideal for family life. I took it upon myself to search for other employment opportunities for John; something that could keep him home on weekends and holidays. That’s when I ran across a company based out of Arizona that ended up changing everything for our family. First, you need to know that John enjoys cleaning, and this company had some cool cleaning equipment I wanted him to see. After watching as many online videos as we could about the company and the equipment,

tile & grout

showers & glass doors

we decided to take a trip out west to see it for ourselves. The equipment turned out to be amazing, and we were sold. We just had one big problem. It was 2008, and the economy was tanking. We had very little savings and were a one-income family. It seemed impossible. We sat in the hotel room there in Arizona and almost gave up before we even started. On the plane ride home, our mood was melancholy as we laid out the reality of our situation. We finally said a prayer that went something like this. “Lord, we want to do this but have no idea how this can work. If this is something you want us to do, can you send us a really BIG sign?” We came to the conclusion that at that time, a new business just wasn’t possible, and anything short of a miracle (or a really big sign) we would have to decline. Little did we know that the answer to that prayer was waiting for us at home. We had purchased a used van two months earlier and had been waiting patiently for our tags. They were weeks late. We found our license plate in the mailbox as we returned home.

countertops

My husband held up the plate as he stared incredulously a t i t s l e t t e r - CO-OWNER ing. He turned John it around to face Fitzwilliam me. “Honey, here’s our sign,” he said with eyes wide and a large grin. The company we visited was named TMT, and the day we saw the equipment was September 8. The license plate was the company name followed by the date we visited. It read 981TMT. That was the sign we needed to sink everything we had in a new business in the midst of a recession, and we’ve never looked back. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to all of you that have given Surface Doc and our family a blessed business.

Save Up to 80% on Cabinet Resurfacing and Replacement

I

N THE past, if your

home’s kitchen and bathroom cabinets needed updating and replacement, you basically had two options: resurfacing or replacement. That is, until now. Today homeowners have a third option, which is 65% less than the cost of resurfacing and 80% less than the CARLEEN HEAD cost of replacement. Your third option to cabinet updating and replacement is an innovative and affordable wood renewal system that totally revitalizes your home’s existing cabinets without the frustrations associated with refinishing. Over time, wooden cabinets can become worn and faded. The N-Hance revolutionary wood renewal system can restore your cabinets’ life and luster at just a fraction of the cost of resurfacing or replacement. In fact, N-Hance allows you to shift colors or to change colors altogether. N-Hance’s trained technicians thoroughly remove all accumulated dirt, grease, and grime, as well as old coatings, before repairing any damaged areas. Finally, an elegant new finish is applied, revealing your “like new” cabinet results, using your existing cabinetry and saving you up to 80% off the cost of replacing your existing cabinets – and all without demolition, the mess of resurfacing, or refinishing. No dust. No mess. No odor. Also, the N-Hance story gets even better, because the same cutting-edge technology that can restore your kitchen and bathroom cabinetry’s original showroom appearance can also restore that new floor luster without the need to replace your home’s flooring or sanding and refinishing, and all at a significant savings. If you’re a homeowner who is considering updating your existing kitchen and bathroom cabinets, then I encourage you to consider all of your options before making a decision. Also, remember that the considerable savings you’ll experience with N-Hance could pay for that new countertop or appliances.

HIS SUMMER’S abundant rain,

high humidity, and temperatures are providing the perfect conditions for the growth of mold and mildew – and not just in the most obvious places such as roofs, siding, walkways, and decking. You can rest assured that if you are observing mold on the exterior surfaces of your home, there is a very good chance that mold and mildew are also forming inside your home as well. The challenge for homeowners is that mold and mildew formation within their homes often go undetected, forming within exterior walls, crawlspaces, basements, and attics. While mold and mildew can cause significant damage to your home’s structure, resulting in expensive repairs, often the greatest threat posed by mold and mildew inside your home is the potential health related issues that you and your family members can experience. So just how does mold and mildew formation begin? Water mold and mildew spores are all that are required. Spores are airborne and virtually impossible to eliminate. Water formation resulting from improper exterior drainage, leaking roofs, humidity within your home forming on cooler air conditioned surfaces, and leaking pipes are just a few of the ways that mold and mildew can start. So can I eliminate mold and mildew myself ? Perhaps, but it’s the undetected mold and mildew that will likely avoid your discovery that is most worrisome and which presents the greatest potential health and structural risks. For a no-cost, no-obligation consultation, call me at Mold Drs. USA today. Mold Drs. USA is Knoxville area’s only ACAC certified mold remediation specialists.

End the Battle Over Kids’ Cluttered Closets

I

F YOU’RE A PARENT, then you’ve pro-

claimed this familiar battle cry: “Clean up your room!” And nowhere is the battleground more intense than in children’s closets. More often than not, kids are messy because they are usually relegated to the smaller rooms of a house with tiny closets that aren’t designed for their needs. The right closet design will virtually eliminate a messy room. Whether you have a pre-schooler or high schooler, a closet design should provide flexible space to meet your child’s needs today, while thinking about their future. Features a child’s closet should include are:

GET YOUR CHILD’S INPUT – Ask for your child’s thoughts when designing a closet. When kids help with the organization, they feel a part of the solution versus being told what to do. Kids are more likely to maintain a clean closet if they help create it. PULL-OUT BASKETS – Sturdy, wire baskets make it easy for a child to see their toys or older children to quickly identify clothing items. They can also be used for tossing dirty clothes. ADJUSTABLE RODS AND SHELVES

– If kids can’t easily reach hangers, shelves, and bins, they’re not going to put things away. For younger children, hang rods at lower, child-friendly levels. As a child grows, those rods are adjusted to accommodate bigger clothing items. Shelves can also be added and adjusted.

COLOR-CODED HANGERS – For younger

children, establish which color will be used for different types of clothes. Separate kids’ clothes into categories of school, play, and dress.

HOOKS – Placed at a child’s eye level, or within

their reach along the inside walls of the closet, hooks keep accessories such as caps, purses, and necklaces organized and easy to reach. Or hang the next day’s outfit to simplify the morning routine.

SLIDE-OUT RACKS – Belts, scarves, and other everyday clothing items are hung on racks that slide in and out from the side of panels, allowing easy access and more space in the closet. Helping kids organize their closet also has an automatic self-benefit: When they’re more organized, you have time to do the things you want!

Oriental rugs are washed by hand in our highly specialized facility using a proprietary process we’ve developed during the past decade. There simply is no in-home alternative to washing Oriental rugs. We call our process “For a Clean That Can Be Seen.” Because most homeowners are unfamiliar with Oriental rug washing, we’ve created a short video that demonstrates the proper meth- BEFORE ods to wash your valuable rugs and avoid the damage that can result when untrained and inexperienced individuals attempt to clean them. I encourage you to visit our website to view this AFTER informative video. I’ve devoted a large portion of my professional career during the last decade absorbing any information that was available on the history, crafting, and caring for fine Oriental rugs, including visiting with individuals whose families have been hand-crafting quality Oriental rugs for three generations or more. Knowing how Oriental rugs are crafted is important to know how to care for them, and because Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning helps homeowners care for their rugs, this understanding is essential. There is no correlation between wallto-wall carpeting and fine Oriental rugs, and they can’t be cared for using the same methods. Oriental rug creation begins with a design that often has a historical significance unique to the region where it’s produced. Most rugs are handcrafted using fine, all-natural wool that’s been hand-dyed using a variety of organic dyes. The dyed wool yarn is then hand-knotted in rows onto a cotton or wool warp, with as many as 400 knots per square inch in the finest Persian rugs. Although they may appear fragile, the long-wearing Oriental rugs are rugged and can outlast carpeting by centuries if properly cared for. Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning, the company I founded nearly three decades ago, has been helping East Tennessee families care for their fine Oriental rugs that can be passed onto future generations as heirlooms. If their care is ignored, the rugs will have a much shorter life expectancy while depreciating in value. If you desire the beauty and longevity that was hand-crafted into your fine Oriental rugs, then Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning can help. Regardless of your rug’s value, we value your rug and treat it accordingly. Call today or email info@ superiorofknoxville.com, and inquire about our pickup and delivery service.

around… mosquitoes, ants, bees, ticks, fleas, and carpenter bees. Fall invaders – such as ladybugs, kudzu bugs, box elder bugs, and stink bugs – are building up their populations to move into your home and prepare for hibernation during the colder months. Killing these bugs with do-it-yourself products won’t be effective for either the short term or the long term, for they will just keep coming back into your home to find food, water, and shelter. Should you wait until you see a lot of these pests before you take action? The answer is no, definitely not! If you start seeing a lot of bugs, it may mean you have an infestation, which is more difficult and more expensive to treat. The fact is that most bugs hatch multiple eggs when they breed, so the bug population can easily get out of control. You can protect your home year-round with Dayton’s Quarterly Perimeter Pest Control. Fall invaders require a special treatment protocol, and it’s best to get your home treated prior to their arrival, so they don’t spend the fall and winter inside your home. New customers can take advantage of $25 off the initial treatment for Quarterly Perimeter Pest Control with an annual agreement and $25 off a Warm Weather Pest or Fall Invader treatment. With all the rain we’ve had in this area, mosquitoes are still out and biting in full force, and new customers can receive $25 off their first treatment of Dayton’s Mosquito Control Management Program with an agreement through October 2015. Dayton’s can get rid of all your pests, guaranteed, so call for a free inspection!

The Three M’s in Real Estate F OR YEARS, real estate profession-

als have been telling homeowners that there are three things to remember when valuing a property, and they are location, location, location. But when selling a home, the three things to remember are marketing, marketing, marketing. An often generic term, the word marketing is frequently used by many as a synonym for advertising. But nothing could be further from the truth, especially as it relates to real estate marketing. Marketing in real estate is a comprehensive strategy implemented by successful real estate

professionals to sell homes at their highest possible value in as short a period as possible. The real challenge for homeowners is to be able to identify those Realtors® that employ these marketing strategies for success from those who merely rely on what they’ve always done in the past. Our team’s award-winning marketing strategies that resulted in 71 successful transactions in 2014 and nearly that same number in the first half of 2015 are part of a powerful and comprehensive plan that we employ for every one of our clients and at no additional cost.

Our successful, multi-tiered, customized marketing plans include:

1. CONSULTATION: Our team conducts an in-depth and thorough consultation with our clients, which forms the foundation for our customized marketing plan.

2. STAGING: Home staging, actually home styling, is a critical step designed to make your home as appealing to the highest number of potential buyers as possible, with the ultimate objective of selling your home as quickly as possible and for more money. We provide each of our sellers with the services of a professional home stager at no additional cost, because every home is its own stage.

3. CAMERA: You only have one chance to make a favorable first impression. That’s why we’ve substituted the professional photography of David Roberts for the cell phone images and good intentions so commonly relied on today by buyers who are viewing your home online. Again, at no additional cost to the seller.

4. ACTION: One of our dedicated team members initiates a “coming soon” campaign that utilizes a variety of media platforms, which is broadcast to 300+ websites. We also create a customized social media marketing plan for each seller that promotes your home on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc. In addition, we leverage our own state-of-the-art website platform, www.TiffanyDorn. com, to market your home to our vast database.

5. COMMUNICATION: With a specialized system of communication, a member of our team contacts each of our sellers on a weekly basis to keep them informed of any and all activity related to their home. It also provides our sellers with a principal contact person should they need to communicate with us.

This comprehensive, yet customized marketing plan has helped us achieve a level of success resulting in being honored as a top 1% sales producer. Not the marketing plan of the past so often employed today, this unique strategy, which costs you absolutely nothing, is designed to help you sell your home fast and at the highest possible price. SUBMITTED BY BETH WILLIS, UT GARDENS MEMBERSHIP/VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR

UT Gardens Plant of the Month: D

DAHLIA

AHLIAS

OFFER gardeners a seemingly infinite array of possibilities. They are available in many different sizes, bloom types, foliage colors, and bloom colors – even multicolor combinations. All will provide a spectacular display of blooms from midsummer through fall. Whether your main interest is a beautiful garden or you are interested in bringing that beauty indoors in a cut flower arrangement, there are numerous dahlias to choose from. Best of all, they are easy to grow when you keep just a few things in mind. Shorter varieties of dahlias, ranging from one to three feet, look great used as a border or planted in mass in the garden. Try planting them near complementary foliage plants such as coleus or colocasia for an effective combination. These varieties can also be used in containers for a showy display. Larger dahlias, which can reach four to six feet, are perfect for small groupings or as a standalone specimen in the garden. Dahlias are tuberous tender perennials, meaning they grow from a fleshy thickened root that resembles a carrot. Above zone 8, gardeners should typically dig up the tubers in the fall after the plant has died back and store them through the winter in a cool, dry location. In milder areas, the tubers can be left in the ground with a thick layer of mulch to help protect them. Whether saved or new, tubers should be planted in late spring, after all danger of frost has passed and the ground has warmed. Dahlias will perform best in full sun and in a rich, well-drained soil. All but the smallest varieties will benefit from being staked, as the blooms can be quite heavy and can pull the stems down. Especially for large varieties, consider a site that offers some wind protection. Tender new growth can sometimes be a target for slugs, but dahlias don’t usually have many issues with pests. In the warmer parts of Tennessee, dahlias will do best with some afternoon shade, and smaller flowering types will perform better than the larger forms. Also, in the heat of the summer, f lower production is slowed but will pick back up when the weather cools. Native to Mexico, dahlias have been in cultivation for many years, and thousands of hybrids have been developed. There are currently 12 official categories of dahlias based on the size of the plant and the form of the

Through the efforts of his case manager and mental health providers, Emmett began to take more responsibility for his health, which also underscored his need of permanent housing. He needed a place to stay. He moved into the Jackson Apartments, at that time owned and operated by VMC, on the corner of Gay and West Jackson Avenue. When VMC opened Minvilla Manor, Emmett was one of the first residents. He continues to live there today. The intended outcome for all residents is to achieve their highest level of self-sufficiency. The mission of VMC, as adopted by its Board of Directors, is to “facilitate permanent supportive housing for those who are homeless and to provide services to prevent homelessness.” Funded by generous donations from the community, VMC programs are based on accountability and include the Bush Family Refuge, dedicated to the prevention of homelessness; the Resource Center, which uses a case management model to help the homeless into housing; the VMC Dental Clinic, which provides dental care to the homeless and poor of Knox County; and Minvilla Manor. Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits SUCCESS

On January 12, 2009, our lives were turned upside down when Goody’s closed, where John was an IT manager. Living in a borrowed motor coach and with a contractor building our kennel, our income had just been cut in half. Worried was an understatement! Hearing of our misfortune, Tom from Everything Knoxville helped us to create a cost-effective, well-thought out marketing plan to help us secure potential clients for our new kennel. Everything Knoxville is not just magazines. Behind those publications is a great team of professionals, sharing their personal experiences, inspiring and promoting small businesses like ours. In 2014, Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits was recognized as a top boarding resort and grooming spa in the Knoxville area by the Knoxville News Sentinel Reader’s Choice Award. God has truly blessed us! Thank you Everything Knoxville for your role in our success.

The High Cost of Indecisiveness

I

B E L I E V E that one of the most

overwhelming obstacles facing many small business owners today is their own indecisiveness – the result of the great recession that started back in December 2007. And although economists have stated that this recession officially ended in June of 2009, nearly seven out of every 10 Americans believe we’re still in a recession six years later. Economists on the one hand use quantitative analysis to support their findings, but everyday Americans check their gut. Regardless of the reams of data supporting the conclusion that the recession has officially ended, those of us that experienced this great recession first-hand are still reeling from its impact. College grads waiting tables, unemployed family members, shrinking retirement accounts, and shuttered businesses are just a few of the current reminders that the impact of this great recession is still being felt today. But our emotions might very well be the

Today the greatest danger you may face is your own indecisiveness, which prevents you from taking full advantage of marketplace improvements and increased consumer confidence. most significant reminder of the recession that we continue to carry with us as we attempt to move our businesses forward. Small business owners who shrugged off smaller and shorter recessions in the past were caught off guard by this recession. Not wishing to repeat this same mistake twice, they are particularly cautious moving forward, almost to their own detriment. Their deep rooted caution has resulted in a level of indecisiveness that is placing them at a competitive marketplace disadvantage.

Business

Many are reluctant to believe that conditions have improved enough to move forward with renewed confidence for fear that the other shoe may drop, but in general, the business climate has improved notably during the last 12 to 18 months. “Once burned, twice cautious,” I understand exactly how you feel, but there’s no denying that the economy has improved. New construction and the sales of existing homes are just one example of economic growth. Today the greatest danger you may face is your own indecisiveness, which prevents you from taking full advantage of marketplace improvements and increased consumer confidence. Your indecisiveness might also cost you valuable market share should your competition act decisively.

The Grass is Greener Where? THE FIRST TIME I heard the phrase

“the grass is always greener on the other side” must have been 30 years ago. To me, it meant to pursue that which lingers in your mind and be a “go getter.” Throughout the years, I’ve come to realize its truer meaning, at least from more experienced perspective. Recently our adult daughter moved away from home. She graduated ministry school, secured a good job, selected roommates, and signed a lease on an affordable apartment. Such was the excitement as each moved into their first apartment! Her drive towards independence was strong, longing badly to be on her own. Taking that healthy leap into adulthood is a natural process, yet her father and I noticed some quick changes after only a few weeks. Now she calls for advice, loves coming over for home cooked meals, and stops in often just to visit. It’s not that she regrets her decision, it was the right one. But her view of home has new meaning. Perspectives change once we get on the other side of decisions. Once I recall taking a new job to escape what I didn’t like about the current one. My boss had high expectations,

and it seemed I was working around the clock. Yet in only a few short weeks, I went back, gleeful to pick back up where I left off. My perspective had changed. Those things I’d once complained about paled in comparison to that short lived job that was not what I’d hoped it would be. The grass is green where you water it. While often it seems easier to change environments in an effort to avoid problems, sometimes we are simply exchanging one conflict for another. Though change in inevitable, it does not serve as a conduit for problem solving. Conflict resolution is a necessary skill and is rarely as difficult as it may seem. » Assess: We should continuously evaluate our reasons for making decisions. Are we running from something or to something? Is it possible to illicit change where we are and bring about positive results? Am I running away to avoid difficult conversations? » Action: Once you’ve taken an honest look at the motive behind your decisions, you are ready to move into action. Don’t overthink. Just make sure your motives are correct and your expectations are based in reality.

» Achieve: Often the greatest achievements in personal growth come from working through conflict. Relationships, whether at work or at home, become deeper, and communication becomes more natural once we assume a position of strength and authenticity. The grass is as green as you see it. While there are difficult seasons in life, often we exacerbate issues by avoiding the steps it takes to improve our process of making important decisions. We should carefully assess every situation, take action to improve that which we can, and then press forward to achieve success. The grass is not greener on the other side. It’s how you care for it that determines its health. Beth Townsend is a dynamic freelance speaker and writer and can be reached at 225.910.7426. Follow her blog at http://bethtownsend.wordpress.com. Family Life

How to Get to Know Your Child’s Friends

NO MATTER the age of your children,

their friends play a very important role in their lives. Your child’s friends can change your child’s outlook on life, their fashion sense, their interests, and their attitudes. It is important that you keep a watchful eye on your child, their interactions with their friends, and what is going on in their social life. Know your child’s friends – Even if your child is an older teen, go out of your way to arrange a time when you can meet all of your child’s friends. Meeting the people that have a big influence on your child can give you an inside peek into their family situations, their personalities, and their interests. Try not to judge your child’s friends solely based on their outward appearances if they are very extreme or “out there,” but try to get to know the person beneath all of the outward projections. Know the parents – If your child is spending a lot of time with a certain individual, try to meet their parents or at least have phone contact with them. This is especially important if your child is hanging

out at this person’s home on a regular basis. Being able to discuss your views and expectations on curfews, activities, entertainment, and more can go far in keeping you in the loop on who your child is hanging out with and what your child is doing. It will also let you determine if that family has the same views and ideas on parenting as you. Make your home welcoming – Having a houseful of kids can get chaotic and loud. However, if you can open up your home and make it inviting to your children and their friends, you will be able to stay more in-theknow about what is going on in their lives. Have food readily available for the munchies, as well as activities and things to do that make your house “cool.” This could be video games, a basketball hoop, DVDs, a great sound system for music, and other things that are of interest to young people. Be sure you talk to each and every friend that your child brings home. Address them by name, and try to engage them in a few moments of small talk. Family outings – When children are in

middle school and high school, they often lose interest in family stuff. Going on family outings and hanging out with “the parents” can seem like a very boring thing to them. You can keep your children engaged in family life by letting them invite a friend to special events at your home and on family vacations. This works to keep your children involved in the family, and it also helps you get to know your child’s friends. Stay in the loop with your child and their friends as much as possible. Doing so can help you stay abreast of any changes or behaviors going on that you may want to address, such as smoking, drinking, drug use, bullying, sexual activity, and more.. Cell Phone Etiquette T

HIS IS a great time to review cell

phone etiquette. In fact, we probably should review these considerations once per year to help eliminate frustrations, exasperations, and down-right rudeness. The thing is that if we would simply remember the definition of etiquette – helping those around us to feel valued and comfortable – it would eliminate the following situations: » Being in a quiet environment being forced to listen to someone’s private conversation » Being interrupted by someone’s obnoxious, loud ringtone » Feeling left out or ignored when someone is texting in our presence » Having our phones out constantly, even when in the presence of others, placing our 70

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE August 2015

phone calls in higher value than those we are physically with » Wasting company time and company pay by spending time on our phones when we’re supposed to be working » Missing out on family conversations, family experiences, and other important events due to our obsession with our phones » Causing hurt feelings to those we care most about due to the inappropriate use of our phones And the list goes on. Surely I don’t need to list every “do” and “don’t” in regard to proper use of a phone. The guiding force that will always lead us in the right direction when considering use of our phone is asking the question, “What

message does this behavior I am exhibiting send to those I am with?” Let’s be more mindful of the impact the usage of our cell phones are having on our family, and let’s change our behavior if we conclude that it could be sending the wrong messages to those we love and even to strangers we share this earth with.

ultrasound has been used for diagnostic imaging purposes for many years. More recently, ultrasound has been turning up the heat in the field of aesthetic medicine. The power of ultrasound has been harnessed to perform noninvasive cosmetic procedures with some amazing results. Two companies have brought ultrasound technology to the aesthetic marketplace. These are Solta with Liposonix and Ulthera with Ultherapy. Both Liposonix and Ultherapy use focused ultrasound technology to bypass the delicate upper layers of skin and target deeper tissues. Think of a magnifying glass’s ability to focus sunlight into an extremely high temperature point capable of burning. This is similar to how Liposonix and Ultherapy work. Southeastern Dermatology Consultants is proud to be the premier provider of Liposonix and Ultherapy in the Knoxville area. Southeastern Dermatology Consultants has performed more than 300 Ultherapy procedures. Our Ultherapist is one of only four Ultherapists in the state of Tennessee who have received advanced Ulthera training. In 2014, our Ultherapist performed more Ultherapy procedures than anyone in the state. Using focused ultrasound to melt fat, Liposonix has been approved to treat the abdomen and flanks (love handles). The Liposonix treatment is ideal for active, healthy individuals who have at least 1 inch or 2.5 cm of fat to lose in their abdomen or flanks. It is non-invasive, so it is a great solution if you have stubborn fat but don’t want to have surgery. The Liposonix treatment has 10 years of research and

Matthew B. Doppelt, D.O. Board Certified Dermatologist

testing behind its development. It has a well-defined safety profile during and after treatment with very good patient satisfaction. With a single treatment we typically see patients lose between one and two inches from their waistline, and maximum improvement is seen after two to three months. Ultherapy is the only device that has received FDA approval for a noninvasive neck and brow lift and most recently to improve lines and wrinkles on the decolletege’. We use it to lift and tighten the skin of the face, neck, under the chin, along the jaw line, and on the brow. Ultherapy is able to do this by going deeper into the tissue than lasers and radio frequency without injuring the skin’s surface. Another factor that promotes safety and better results is that with Ultherapy we can visualize the targeted areas. Results will unfold during the course of two to three months with maximum improvement at six months. While these ultrasound technologies do not duplicate the results of traditional surgery, Liposonix and Ultherapy are inviting alternatives for those who are not yet ready or who are not candidates for surgery. Please call Southeastern Dermatology Consultants to schedule a complimentary consultation, and see if either of these procedures are a good option for you.
