S I LOOK BACK on

2016, I ask myself where the year has gone? Seems that I was just taking out my Christmas decorations last year, and here I am faced with my holiday decorating this year. Time really does go quickly, and it makes me realize how I need to enjoy the journey more and not focus on what is left undone. Photo by D. Roberts Photography Recently one of my cousins was going through some family photos and found some photos of my parents and grandparents that she thought I might like to have, so she sent them to me. Many of those photos I had never seen before, and they brought back a flood of memories of family holiday gatherings. I loved looking through those photos, especially the ones of my grandfather, who had passed away a couple of months after I was born. Those photos gave me more of an insight into who he was and how he valued family, and those

photos are priceless. Receiving those photos and looking through them became the highlight of my week and was the best gift I could have received. This holiday season, as we are busy with our everyday lives, take time to slow down and visit with family and friends; maybe even reconnect with some old acquaintances and appreciate those true lasting relationships. In doing that, you may find that it will be the highlight of your week or year. We at Everything Knoxville have come to appreciate all of our readers and advertisers, many of which have become great friends. We wish all of you and your families a very Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year. We look forward to continuing to serve our community by highlighting all the best Knoxville has to offer while making new friends along the way. Enjoy the holiday season!

Amish Excellence A

from the Heart

LTHOUGH HER CAREER as a

Human Resource Administrator in the medical field spanned nearly three decades, this Tennessee native turned entrepreneur discovered that her true passion laid elsewhere. “I was always confident that the positive decisions I made as an HR professional had an impact on the quality of care that the healthcare organizations I represented delivered to our patients,” said Angie Carroll, Amish Excellence owner. “But like so many career professionals, I began to explore that entrepreneurial spirit that seems to exist within so many of us today.” Angie pursued her inner calling to become a member of Knoxville area’s self-employment community when she launched Amish Excellence, offering the finest Amish, hand-crafted furniture at affordable pricing that surpasses most of her customers’ expectations. In this issue of Everything Knoxville, we are excited to introduce to you one of East Tennessee’s newest woman entrepreneurs, Angie Carroll, and to help you, our readers, gain a fuller appreciation of just what genuine Amish Excellence furniture is. EK: Before diving into Amish Excellence, first tell us about your self-employment journey. After nearly three decades in the human resources profession, you no doubt surprised many members of your family and friends. Angie: My family and friends weren’t surprised at all. They wondered what took me so long to start my own business! Throughout the years, I’ve enjoyed helping friends decorate their homes, sewing window treatments and bedding, making flower arrangements, and decorative painting. I’ve also planned and decorated for several weddings and special events. Using creativity to make things pretty has always been my passion. EK: Why did you choose Amish Excellence? Angie: This time last year I was doing a lot of soul 6

searching and praying about how I should spend the rest of my life. The corporate world wasn’t where I found happiness any longer, so I started looking at a number of different business options. None of them inspired me. I sought the advice of my longtime friend, Brad. He introduced me to Guy Irwin, the owner of Amish Excellence in Franklin, Tennessee. After a few visits and several conversations with Guy, I decided that opening an independently owned Amish Excellence retail location in Knoxville was the right thing for me to do. EK: You’ve had the opportunity to visit many of the Amish craftsmen in their homes and in their workshops. Tell us a little bit about their culture and why their commitment to genuine quality successfully differentiates themselves in the furniture industry. Angie: Yes, I have met most of our craftsmen and speak with them on a regular basis. Their culture is very different from “the English” culture, as they refer to us. These are people with strong values and firm beliefs. They communicate these values and beliefs not just through words, but through their way of life. The Amish people are not a reminder of what once was, but a clear statement of how a community of people have been successful in creating and maintain a way of life – a way that has proven over time to be right for them. They give the modern world a clear example of how a strong faith can provide in ways the modern world seems to have forgotten. The communities are prosperous and lively, rooted in faith in God, family, tradition, and hard work. EK: Let’s dispel some rumors. Not all Amish manufactured furniture is created equal. Angie: That’s right. The furniture available from Amish Excellence is not manufactured in a large, modern facility as with online purchases or “big box” stores. None of the builders we work with are employed in a factory. All shops are guaranteed 100% Amish ownership. These are individual families with shops on their farms where a few other family members build the furniture. We Photos by D. Roberts Photography

ONLY sell furniture made by Amish craftsmen with American solid hardwood. Each piece comes with a lifetime warranty against any defects in material or workmanship at no additional cost to the customer. Each piece is created when the order is placed and is not part of a large “off the shelf” inventory. EK: Another misconception is that all Amish made furniture is Shaker or Craftsman in style. What furniture styles are available? Angie: We do offer these styles, as the clean lines of Shaker and Craftsmen furniture continue to be very popular. Many customers are surprised to find contemporary styles and fresh, new stain colors and finishes available. Our furniture options appeal to anyone who appreciates genuine quality, value, and pieces they won’t have to replace in a few years. Our craftsmen can build furniture that will beautifully complement any home or office space. EK: All of your Amish Excellence furniture is custom made. Why is that important to your customers? Angie: Our customers enjoy knowing that they have a piece of furniture that is uniquely theirs. While every piece is beautiful and very well made, the choice of wood species, stain and finish, size, shape, and edge profile makes their furniture special. Our craftsmen aren’t limited by what can be mass produced in a factory. They can customize almost every aspect of the design. The natural beauty of solid hardwood contributes to the warmth, uniqueness, and character of each piece. We don’t offer any furniture that is made of computer-generated images that are laminated, veneers, MDF, pressboard, or cardboard. Additionally, our furniture is sustainable, environmentally-friendly, more durable, and long lasting. These are all important to our customers. EK: Explain to our readers how you help them design their own custom pieces. Angie: I try very hard to connect with my customers and understand how they intend to use the furniture. This helps me offer suggestions and designs ideas. There are a

variety of furniture pieces in our showroom that shows the craftsmanship, quality, various stain colors, and fabric options. From there, we may browse through several catalogs for design inspiration. I also encourage our customers to bring in pictures of items they like. We may even sketch the design and dimensions on to graph paper. My service also includes in-home consultations that are free of charge. EK: Perhaps the greatest surprise to your customers is that your higher quality, custom made, 100% Amish hand-crafted furniture is often less than what they would pay for a similar furniture piece in area retail furniture stores. Would you care to comment? Angie: Yes, it’s important that our furniture be affordable for the majority of our customers. Our showroom is smaller than most furniture stores, and we don’t carry a large inventory. Being a custom furniture maker allows us to do that without a lot of expensive overhead. Because the furniture can be made at any time, some customers choose to start with a few pieces and add to it throughout the year. We’re working with a young couple now that recently purchased a bed and two nightstands, and they plan to add the triple dresser and chest next year. EK: How can our readers learn more about Amish Excellence? Angie: Come by the store! We’re open Monday through Saturday and always closed on Sunday. You can also visit us online at www.AmishExcellence.com. EK: In closing, is there anything you would like to add? Angie: I believe our service statement best sums up our priorities and the business model for Amish Excellence: Dedicated to Things that Last. God, Family, Integrity, Thrift, and Simplicity.

of the Knoxville area by painter Inna Knox and wood designs by Nelson Zeigler are on display now through December 31st at the Art Marker Gallery. An opening reception will take place on December 2 from 5:30 to 9 pm during downtown Knoxville’s First Friday Art Walk, with complimentary refreshments. Inna Nasonova Knox was born in Kazan, Russia, and came to the United States in 2000. She is now a dual citizen. Her educational training in Russia includes fashion design, graduating with honors in interior design, and in the United States, a degree in graphic technology design at Gateway Technical College in Racine, WI. During her years of studies, she has shown and sold her work at numerous art galleries and exhibitions. Inna creates her images with a vivid and rich use of color. Drawing on a fascination with new art ideas and her varied educational background, Inna likes to use different painting techniques and styles. Her wish is that the viewer’s eye sees the dramatic hues and feels her passion for art. Nelson Ziegler of Sevierville is a graduate of The Art Institute of Boston and Northwestern Academy of Watercolor. He has won many awards for both his painting and woodturning, both regionally and nationally, and is a member of the American Association of Woodturners. He has been turning for more than 20 years. “I enjoy turning wood, because it allows me to think in three-dimension rather than the twodimensions I use in my paintings,” said Nelson. “It also allows me to explore form, as well as the use of grain in the wood, and/or color and allows me to explore the possibilities of incorporating my painting into the work as well. The pieces on display are a combination of carving and dying and detailing done with a dental tool. Most of my pieces are turned from green wood rather than kiln dried. There will also be Christmas ornaments for sale that are handmade by the gallery’s artists. Proceeds from ornament sales will benefit the Community School of the Arts, a school in downtown Knoxville that offers exposure to fine arts education and provides mentoring and guidance to East Tennessee’s young people.

Christmas Pointers A

DAPTING TO CHANGE

is difficult, especially when it involves lifestyle change. Setting goals with the intent to have better health should always be a top priority, but most people find this goal difficult or oftentimes unachievable, especially around Christmas time. What better way to celebrate a wonderful time of year than by using the best ingredients in our recipes that will promote health and happiness for our family and friends? It’s a great gift to give that can help promote long-term commitments even after the New Year. Eating a balanced diet rich in organic ingredients is an important key to longterm health. It is important to avoid processed foods laced with monosodium glutamate (MSG), sugars, and preservatives for a healthier way of life. Simple sugars add unneeded calories, as well as imbalances and cravings that must be satisfied. MSG intensifies flavor that encourages larger consumption of food and could result in obesity. Preservatives, flavorings, and dyes are unwanted chemicals that are harmful and are oftentimes difficult for the body to eliminate. Many diseases, including

diabetes and cancer, have been linked to preservatives. By focusing on a fare of whole grains, fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts, beans, and seeds, your whole life experience can be changed for the better. What we consume in the form of food affects our thinking and our happiness. Weight loss is just a side benefit of a balanced, healthy diet. Eliminating processed foods, white sugar (including artificial sugars), refined grains such as white rice or white bread, hydrogenated trans fats, coffee, and alcohol can have a profound effect on your health. Of course occasional indulgences are likely to happen, but day-to-day eating habits are most important. This Christmas make a commitment to improving your health by avoiding foods that are heavy laden with simple sugars, preservatives, and trans fats. It will be a great opportunity to show family and friends how great they can feel after indulging in delicious fare. Transitioning into the New Year by implementing this foundation of using the best ingredients can impact the future with better habits and ultimately better health.

Note: Consult your healthcare professional before making any dietary changes. These articles and recipes are not intended to diagnose or treat any illness.

“Godspell, Jr.” at Knoxville Children’s Theatre December 2-18

K

NOXVILLE CHILDREN’S T H E A T R E will present

“Godspell, Jr.” – a live onstage version of the smash Broadway play, especially adapted for ages 6 and older. The play will be performed December 2 through 18: Thursdays and Fridays at 7 pm, Saturdays at 1 and 5 pm, and Sundays at 3 pm. Prepare ye for the timeless tale of friendship, loyalty, and love based on the Broadway musical that inspired a generation. The disciples help Jesus Christ tell parables, using a wide variety of songs and comic timing. An eclectic blend of music, ranging in style from pop to vaudeville, is employed as the story of Jesus’ messages of kindness, tolerance, and love come vibrantly to life. The play, based on the parables in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, started as a college project at Carnegie-Mellon University. It became an off-Broadway sensation for five years before transferring to Broadway in 1976. A successful Broadway revival recently ran for two years, and the original cast version of the song “Day By Day” reached #13 on the

Billboard Pop Singles Chart. The play is performed by 10 talented young actors from ages 13 to 16. Konnor Stump, a freshman at Bearden High, plays Jesus. Derrick Washington, Jr., a sophomore at L&N STEM Academy, will perform the role of John the Baptist, and high-school junior Lily Kate Corley will portray Judas. A talented ensemble plays the remainder of the roles: Celeste Paultre, Sydney Reed, Averi Richardson, Hannah Sloas, Keegan Spurr, and Simeon Thress. Keegan Spurr is making his KCT debut. Kayla June Nobbe, a junior at Gibbs High, serves as the show’s stage manager. Wheeler Moon, a junior at West High, is the play’s scenery and lighting designer. Charlotte Stark, a high school sophomore, is the show’s costume designer. Sean Sloas will perform the duties of Production Manager. Dennis E. Perkins is the show’s director, with assistance by Wheeler Moon. KCT is East Tennessee’s leading producer of stage plays for children. New Feature Exhibition at the Museum of East Tennessee History

E

AST TENNESSEE M A R B L E is prized the

world over. “Rock of Ages: East Tennessee’s Marble Industry,” a new exhibition by the East Tennessee Historical Society, offers a first-time look into the industry that launched the rock’s fame and crowned Knoxville as the Marble City. The exhibition at the Museum of East Tennessee History is open to the public now through April 30, 2017. The marble industry was once an important sector of East Tennessee’s economy. By the mid-1850s, East Tennessee marble from Knox County had been chosen for the interiors of the Tennessee State Capitol, and marble from Hawkins County was being installed inside the new House and Senate wings of the United States Capitol. In the decades that followed, East Tennessee’s varicolored marble was sought by architects and patrons for the interiors of a variety of public buildings: State capitol buildings, courthouses, and city halls. Tennessee marble would soon also be ordered for high traffic railroad terminal flooring across the United States and Canada. In the 1870s, with the example of Knoxville’s handsome new Custom House, the marble became known for its strength and durability as an exterior stone. The Custom House marble was extracted from a quarry in the Forks of the River district, near the confluence of the French Broad and Holston Rivers. By 1873, this quarry was being operated by the Knoxville Marble Company, one of East Tennessee’s first modern marble businesses. Others were soon to follow on both sides of the Tennessee River; the Crescent Marble Company in the Boyd’s Bridge area provided marble for the Memphis Custom House (completed 1885) and the Ross and Mead Marble quarries, developed by John M. Ross in the Island Home section, furnished marble for two exemplary museum buildings: The Morgan Library (1906) and the National Gallery of Art (1941). While the Mead quarry pit is now filled with water, the integrity of the Ross quarry has been preserved. Both quarries are situated in Knoxville’s Urban

20

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE December 2016

Wilderness within the Ijams Nature Center. What remains of the industrial landscape includes a rock wall created from marble waste blocks, two intact pits that demonstrate bench quarrying techniques, historic road traces and railroad berms, scattered piles and stacks of marble blocks, and the location of the former railroad bed. Along this same railroad line, about four miles south in the Vestal neighborhood, is the Candoro Marble Company’s office and mill buildings. Candoro, founded in 1914, housed a marble mill, finishing plant, and shipping office for the John J. Craig Companies, which had quarries in both Knox and Blount counties. The company office building, a Beaux Arts masterpiece designed by Knoxville architect Charles Barber in 1923, is a fine example of exterior use of light pink marble. The interior walls and floors served as a showroom for the types and finishes of marble offered by the company. Reminders of the once prominent Tennessee marble industry can be seen today in late 19th/early 20th century buildings on Gay Street and other corners of downtown, in building facades, steps and entranceways, and interior lobbies. The Knoxville Post Office and Federal Building on Main Street is a particularly fine example dating from the 1930s. And Knoxville, a city that has won national recognition for historic preservation, continues to embrace its marble heritage in modern buildings. Notice how seamlessly the new three-story East Tennessee History Center adjoins the original Custom House and how the exterior marble of the contemporary Knoxville Museum of Art brings the building’s formal geometry to life. The exhibition includes more than two dozen artifacts and numerous photographs and illustrations representative of Tennessee’s unique marble story. Some feature items include a footed marble dish, c. 1861, owned by John Hasson (1823-1901), a New Yorker who was involved in the Tennessee marble industry by 1857, when he founded the Hasson Marble Quarry; a

mid-19th century East Tennessee biscuit table with Tennessee marble slab inset and yellow pine frame; and a beautifully carved “Head of David” by master carver Albert Milani (1892-1977), who spent 40 years at Candoro Marble Company, where he was foreman/head of the cutting department. The bust, crafted for his own pleasure, was nationally acclaimed by art critics. The Museum of East Tennessee History is open 9 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday, 10 am to 4 pm Saturday, and 1 to 5 pm Sunday. Museum admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, and free for children under 16. Each Sunday admission is free to all, and ETHS members always receive free admission. The Museum is located in the East Tennessee History Center, 601 South Gay Street in Knoxville. For more information about the exhibition, scheduling a school tour, or visiting the museum, call 865-215-8824, email eths@eastTNhistory.org, or visit www. easttnhistory.org. About East Tennessee Historical Society Established in 1834, the East Tennessee Historical Society is widely acknowledged as one of the most active history organizations in the state and enjoys a national reputation for excellence in programming and education. Arrowmont Exhibits Traveling Quilt Show and Pieces from Its Permanent Collection

A

RROWMONT SCHOOL of Arts and Crafts is exhibiting more than 25 quilts in Piecing Together a Changing Planet – a juried exhibition of fiber arts highlighting climate change in America’s national parks. The exhibit is on view through January 14, 2017, in the Sandra J. Blain Gallery. Admission is free. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm and Saturday 10 am to 4 pm. Piecing Together a Changing Planet is a collaboration between Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA) Florida and Biscayne National Park. Opening at Biscayne National Park’s gallery, the exhibit has traveled to nine other national park venues across the country. The exhibition coincides with this year’s centennial celebration of the National Park Service, marking the beginning of a second century of stewardship of America’s national parks. Unlike utilitarian quilts used as bed coverings, these art quilts convey the beauty and fragility of the environment and the urgency of climate change in ways that touch the heart and soul. All quilts were created

by members of the Studio Art Quilt Associates, a 3,000 member national organization dedicated to promoting art quilts through education, exhibitions, professional development, documentation, and publications. In conjunction with the exhibit, Arrowmont will be exhibiting quilts from its permanent collection. Arrowmont’s permanent collection includes nearly 1,000 works in a variety of arts and crafts media. Made by the hands of current and past Arrowmont instructors, individuals from the settlement school’s days, and past artists-in-residence, the works represent the school’s past, present, and future.

ers, entrepreneurs – we as women do so much for family and friends throughout our hurried lives that I just thought it was time for us gals to do something for ourselves for a change. It’s time to treat ourselves to something special; a time to become the best you that you can be. Are there any of us that wouldn’t like to look a little younger? Then it’s time to discover just what facial rejuvenation can do for you. Non-surgical, customized facial rejuvenation is not just a superficial change in one’s appearance; it creates a boost in selfesteem and self-confidence, allowing the individual to become more self-assured. Because our society is so visually oriented, beauty is widely sought after. I’ve achieved amazing results with dermal fillers, and I’m excited to spread the word about the effects of microneedling. Microneedling is one service that has many skin benefits to help you look younger and erase flaws. It decreases pore size, erases acne scars from skin damage, reduces hyperpigmentation, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, as well as boosts collagen production under the skin. Aging of the skin is caused by collagen loss, which is triggered by free radical formation in the skin and the production of collagenase. Skin aging is accelerated by sun damage, environmental pollutants, smoking, stress, improper skin care, and weight loss/gain. The Face Place is proud to give you a non-rushed, relaxed environment with a “one-on-one,” private, free consultation by appointment. We specialize in expert facial injections. I approach your face artistically for unique, customized facial esthetic results. I visualize each person’s face as a unique canvas, remembering you should look like yourself, only younger and more beautiful. We are also versed on the latest injecting techniques with a large variety of dermal fillers, and we can help you select the filler that’s right for you. During December, we will be offering a “special package” of microneedling services that includes free bonuses valued at $549. Also, for the holiday season, we have special holiday savings on all products and services, as well as holiday packages. You’re invited to visit or call us for details. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of my customers for their past support and encouragement and to wish all of you a happy and healthy holiday season.

NE OF THE HOTTEST rock

and roll bands to dominate the airwaves in the ’90s was a little group from Georgia called The Black Crowes. In case you need your memory jogged as to who I’m talking about, the band splashed onto the music scene in 1990 and beyond with songs like “Hard to Handle,” “Remedy,” and “She Talks with Angels.” Formed by brothers Rich (on guitars) and Chris Robinson (vocals), The Black Crowes enjoyed 25 years of success before the brothers decided to go their separate ways. One of the results of that parting is Rich’s new CD, Flux. Raw and gritty, the album is what rock is all about. It was about Flux that I had the opportunity to chat with Rich while he enjoyed a day or two at home during a tour break. Responding to my question about fan reaction to the album and supporting tour, he said, “So far, it’s been a really good response. Everyone’s been really cool. Crowds have been really enthusiastic about the new songs, so it’s been great! I think that people feel that it all works together. I try to look at everything as a large piece, you know what I mean? How does this fit into the overall spectrum of what I’ve done? To me, I think it fits right in line with everything and, again, I’m really happy with it.” Picking a favorite song one has written is like being asked to pick your favorite child, so I asked Rich a slightly different question: Which song would he point to as a calling card to people to entice them to purchase the CD? “I have no idea!” he said. “Songs are songs, and the interesting thing about all of my records, really, is that they’re all very different. Certain people I talk to will say, ‘Ah! That’s my favorite song!’ It’s what the person chooses, you know what I mean?” Rich and his bandmates are touring off and on in support of the new CE. I asked him if he was touring with the same musicians who were on the new album. “Yeah!” he answered. “In the studio, it was me and my drummer, Joe Magistro, and keyboard player, Matt Slocum. On tour, I also have Svien Pipien from The Black Crowes playing bass. And then I have a friend of mine from Argentina named Miko Bere – a really good guitar player and a really good guy. So yeah! That’s who we’re touring with!” Guitarists like Rich typically own a lot of guitars and are often in search of that one guitar they think is the “holy grail.” In response to being asked how many guitars he owns and if there is such a thing as one that is the “holy grail,” he said, “I think about 50 or 60. I don’t know. I haven’t really counted in a while. I don’t think there really is a holy grail of guitars. I think that guitars have their own personality, and I think that people can connect with different guitars. So I don’t necessarily think that one is better than the other. Again, it’s like asking what my favorite 32

RICH ROBINSON

song is that I wrote – I really like all of them, and I use them for different things. One guitar might be great for a cleaner sound. One guitar might be great for a dirtier sound.” As our chat wound up, I asked Rich another question I typically ask of those who have been in the music business as long as he has: When you step off the tour bus for the final time and go to that great gig in the sky, how do you want to be remembered, and what do you

hope your legacy will be? “Oh, I don’t know,” said Rich. “I never think about that. I don’t necessarily do this for a posthumous reason, ha ha! I just do it while I’m living, and whatever happens after that I don’t really care. I guess you want people to like your music, and if it lives on, great. It’s not something that I think about, ever.” You can read this interview in its entirety at www.boomerocity.com. Photo by Alysse Gafkjen

want to be included in Christmas fun. Pet toys serve many benefits, including channeling pent-up energy, alleviating temptation to destroy household items, reducing stress, and preventing behavioral problems. And playtime with your pets is an important bonding and socialization process, resulting in your dog being better adjusted around other people and animals, plus developing a deeper bond between you and your dog if proper play is taught. Safety should always be top priority when selecting the best toy for your dog. Size is important; too big and your dog will have trouble holding it in their mouth and paws, too small and it could become a choking hazard. If your dog is one to cuddle his toys, a stuffed toy may be the perfect complement to his personality, but if he’s a chewer, hard rubber is more appropriate. If your dog likes to roughhouse, a very durable material that will stand up to their rough-and-tumble ways

is needed. All dogs are different; for Fido, a simple ball may be stimulating, while Rex requires a complex treat dispensing puzzle toy to keep him engaged. Make sure the safest, most nutritious ingredients are in the treats. With many recalls on commercial treats, homemade treats are your best option. Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits does not allow owners to bring commercial treats unless they are in their original package and clearly marked “Made in the USA.” Homemade, nutritious treats are served to guests at Ms. C’s. Safety is imperative in selecting presents for your pets. Play smart, play safe, provide nourishing treats, and above all, love your pets like family!

Heartwarming Christmas Show Comes to Life During Dixie Stampede’s Holiday Adventure

T

HE “HIGH-SPIRITED ADVENTURE” of Dolly Parton’s

Dixie Stampede Dinner Attraction receives a festive twist for the 2016 holiday season with the magnificent sights and sounds of Christmas, including a fullscale living Nativity, holiday decorations, Santa Claus, and a fabulous four-course Christmas feast. The Christmas show at “The Most Fun Place to Eat in the Smokies” debuted November 1 and runs through New Year’s Day. Thanks to last season’s renovations, which added a state-of-the-art, LED wall backdrop to the show’s 35,000-square-foot arena, Christmas at Dixie Stampede becomes a fascinating experience for everyone in the family. The LED wall backdrop seamlessly complements the exciting action with stunning holiday scenery, which immerses guests and helps them feel as if they instantly have been transported deep into the natural beauty of Christmas from the foothills surrounding the Great Smoky Mountains to the clear skies above Bethlehem on the night of Jesus’ birth. “Christmas is a very special time of year at

Dixie Stampede,” said David Swangel, General Manager of Dixie Stampede in Pigeon Forge. “While our thrilling high-spirited adventure provides fun for our guests thanks to the friendly rivalry between the North and South Poles, we also take time to celebrate the meaning of Christmas thanks to a full-scale, living Nativity. Families always take the time to let us know this show has become a treasured part of their yearly traditions.” Guests will be awed by the birth of Jesus reenacted with Mary, Joseph, the wise men, and a living Nativity of camels, donkeys, and sheep. This touching scene is a reminder of the importance of the Christmas season. Families also will enjoy “Toys Come to Life,” an amazing musical fantasy starring The Sugar Plum Fairy and a number of toys she magically brings to life in a musical celebration, which includes a stunning aerial display set to the unforgettable music of The Nutcracker. The stars of the show challenge each other in barrel races and other thrilling competitions, all in the name of Dixie Stampede’s friendly Christmas rivalry between the

North and South Poles. Audience members even may find themselves called in to help their side to victory. Finally, no Christmas would be complete without an appearance by Santa, as Old Saint Nick arrives in his sleigh while the arena is transformed into a winter wonderland of freshly fallen snow. Christmas dinner, the other star of the show, includes Dixie Stampede’s signature four-course feast consisting of Dixie Stampede’s original creamy vegetable soup, homemade buttery biscuit, a whole rotisserie chicken, hickory-smoked barbequed pork loin, corn on the cob, herb-basted potato, Dixie Stampede’s own specialty dessert, and unlimited beverages. Vegetarian meals are available upon request. Guests are invited to start their fun-filled evening in the Dixie Belle Saloon with the side-splitting comedy and hard-driving bluegrass and country music of Mountain Ruckus, Dixie Stampede’s house band. The band performs one hour prior to show time. Show times and reservations are available by calling 1-800-356-1676 or visiting www. dixiestampede.com. December 2016 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

Is Your Home Ready for Christmas? WE L C O M I N G

FA M I LY and friends into your home this season is a highlight for many of us. Getting your home ready to be an oasis of warmth and good cheer is probably at the top of your list of things to do this month. But before you get ahead of yourself and start retrieving those decorations from storage, your home may need some sprucing up. Decorating on a clean foundation is much more rewarding than covering up problems. As busy as this season can be, it’s a good idea to slow down and really analyze your home’s needs before adorning it with ornaments and knickknacks. You may want to deep clean all of your hard surfaces, including countertops, tile, and grout in the kitchen and bathrooms and possibly sidewalks and outdoor living areas, too. If carpets haven’t been cleaned for a while, you may need a restoration cleaning instead of the traditional surface steam cleaning. Once your home looks and feels

tile & grout

clean, you will be inspired to keep it looking that way. I think we all understand that when something feels right, it gives us incentive to keep it feeling great for a long time to come. A truly deep down clean home promotes positive interaction and just makes you feel good. Once you add your beautiful holiday décor, it’s sure to be a place that fosters the harmony and joy you desire. If you need some help getting your home in tip-top shape this season, please give us a call. We’d love to help you make this season as beautiful as possible for your family and loved ones. We at Surface Doc would like to wish you and your family a Christmas season filled with hope and joy from our Savior Jesus Christ. We’d like to thank our customers for accepting us into your homes and, in some

cases, sharing your lives with us. YOU have been such a blessing to us – this season and all year long. Please help us spread the beauty of Christmas by recognizing the real reason for the season as we count our blessings and live each moment to its fullest. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from your friends at Surface Doc. For help with all your deep cleaning and restoration cleaning needs, give John a call today at 865-567-1986.

UT Gardens Plant of the Month:

Magnolia Grandiflora

‘Little Gem’

Y

OU’VE SEEN them: Huge southern magnolias that have

engulfed the entire front yard, often leading to criminal acts of pruning. Luckily, the southern magnolia has demonstrated a lot of genetic diversity, and throughout the decades, there have been many selections made for compact growth habits. A number of cultivars have emerged with smaller forms, allowing them to be useful for the smaller landscapes and in more design applications. These would include ‘Little Gem’, ‘Hasse’, ‘Alta’, ‘Kay Parris’, and two more trademarked under the names Teddy Bear™ and Greenback™. These forms vary a bit on foliage density and color and overall form and size, so investigate them further to see which appeals to you and fits your design intentions. One cultivar has a characteristic that may persuade you that it is the “Southern Belle” you ask to dance in your landscape. This cultivar, ‘Little Gem’, likes to bloom and bloom and bloom. It is noted for flowering generously even when still a small plant, recently propagated. More amazingly, once it flowers in early summer along with the other southern magnolias, it doesn’t stop when they do. Though not as profuse as its first flush of bloom, flowers will continue to be produced sporadically right up to hard frost. It is a rare day that you will fail to find at least a few flowers on ‘Little Gem’, so be sure to place it where you can enjoy the heavenly fragrance. It can also be an interesting contributor to a mixed screen planting, with its bold texture and oval to pyramidal habit. The foliage is also spectacular, contrasting with other cut greenery in winter, and can be used to make a lustrous Christmas wreath. Southern magnolia is native to the deep south, and in the wild, it is usually found in wet soils and in the shade of large trees. That is a clue to its tolerance of a wide range of landscape settings. However, in shade, ‘Little Gem’ will not flower as prolifically, and the growth habit will be reminiscent of a narrow, sparse Christmas tree. In full sun, it will make a dense oval 20 to 25 feet in height, with a width about half that. The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit www.utgardens.tennessee.edu. Photo by C. Reese, courtesy UTIA

Turn Visions of Sugar Plums into Visions of a New Designer-Inspired Kitchen

I

T’S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME of the year to create a wish list

and start planning for your new dream kitchen in 2017! What are the top five items to think about when envisioning your new kitchen under your Christmas tree? 1. Cabinetry: When determining the new style for your kitchen, the key element is the cabinetry. Not only is the cabinetry one of the largest purchase items in a renovation, it is the element that lays the groundwork for your style. A fun design tip for your cabinetry is a colorful glaze. Consider a white cabinet with a gray or blue glaze to give it a color pop. Shae Design Studio offers a variety of cabinetry and hood options for you to choose from, as well as a staff of interior designers eager to help design your dream kitchen! 2. Backsplash: The backsplash is one of the smaller ticket items in the kitchen but also a place that you can take the most risk. There are many textures, colors, and finishes available that you can choose from to refine your style. Go bold and choose a metallic tile or glitter grout. It is a small chunk of the renovation budget and easy to install yourself!

3. Flooring: Have you considered engineered hardwood? Many homeowners love the look of solid hardwood but are nervous about installing it in the kitchen or bath. Engineered hardwood has the look of solid wood but is more cost-effective and easy to install. Pairing a dark floor with a light cabinet can have an appealing contrast, but it’s important to choose the right countertop to pull everything together. 4. Countertops: Two of the most prominent countertop surfaces are granite and quartz. Quartz is an engineered product and an excellent choice for homeowners that use their kitchens heavily. Granite is a natural product and requires maintenance but also has a bolder look with more pattern. If you like the look of marble, try a quartz alternative; it looks great without the vulnerability. 5. Lighting: After all of the big decisions are made, an important finishing touch is your decorative lighting. Pendants over a large island frame in the space, creating a focal point for your new designer kitchen. Lighting comes in a variety of finishes and makes a great accent item to introduce a wood stain, metal, or glass that you don’t

have in your kitchen. Shae Design Studio offers two free design hours to all cabinetry clients to help them navigate through the market and create a vision for their space. From cabinetry, lighting, flooring, furniture, and accessories, Shae Design Studio offers a variety of items to help jump start your new kitchen in the new year.

The New Old Wood: Using Reclaimed Wood in Your Home

T

HERE ARE MANY

unique characteristics of older homes that I feel set them apart from today’s newer homes. In my opinion, the intricate architectural details on display in many old homes are far superior to those found in most homes built today. However, if I had to name one trait that distinguishes older homes from homes built today, it would have to be their character. For me, character is felt rather than observed. When I walk in the front door of a home, the walls and flooring either emit character or they’re just standard framing with a few finish materials added to enhance their appearance. Recreate old home character with reclaimed wood Is it possible to add character to a home? Yes, it can be done with a generous infusion of reclaimed wood. Whether reclaimed from old barns, homes, or factories, reclaimed wood has decades and sometimes centuries of history etched into its beautiful grains and even visible on its surface at times. Reduce, reuse, and recycle. More people are finding ways to use reclaimed elements, especially reclaimed wood, when building or decorating their homes. Reclaimed wood lends a warmth to any room but also infuses a space with a sense of history and charm that new materials lack. You may be surprised at all the places you can incorporate reclaimed wood into your home.

The material can be used for flooring, interior trim, beams, doors, wall treatments, or pretty much anywhere in a home where you might consider using wood. If you’re concerned about protecting the environment, using reclaimed wood is the ultimate in recycling. You’re reusing material from trees that were cut down ages ago and saving it from ending up in the burn pile or landfill. There’s a reclaimed wood for just about any application Whether you’re looking for an elegant floor or an accent wall, there’s a reclaimed wood that’s right for your application. If you want wood that practically oozes character, choose reclaimed material that

still displays the nail holes from its previous incarnaJenny Blalock tion. Barn doors Owner are also popping up all over the place. Their rustic simplicity can be incorporated into any design preference and living space. Unlike hinged doors, these sliding ones require and take up very little space. The doors are easily mounted on special hardware. Reclaimed wood just might be able to add that missing character to your home and may become a foundation upon which your family can create its own memories. To discover how reclaimed, antique lumber can be incorporated into your new home or remodeling project, you’re invited to call us today.

getting in the Christmas spirit this year. The weather hasn’t felt like Christmas, and it will also be my first Christmas without all my children home. My middle daughter, Katie, is an Army Lieutenant stationed in Korea. Of course I’m proud, but I also miss her. As a result of my unease, I’ve been doing a lot of yard work. If there are others of you who need to get out of the house, here are some things you can do: » You can still plant trees and shrubs as long you’re prepared to water them. The severe drought continues, so those of you who are unable or unwilling to water your plants until we get substantial rain need to wait it out. » Did you plant pansies? If so, remember to fertilize them as long as we are abnormally warm. If the soil temperature drops below 45 degrees, you can stop fertilizing. It also isn’t a great idea to plant them late, because they tend to be stunted and not bloom well if they’re planted in cold

ground. You can still put them in planters in protected areas, because that soil temperature tends to be warmer. » Clean up beds if you haven’t done that yet. This is important if you had insect and disease problems. It’s also great therapy if you’re having a bad day. » Leaf removal is another mood reliever. Light layers can be run over by the lawn mower and left to decompose. For heavy layers, you’ll need to remove the leaves or find a way to use them. What we did this year is to blow the leaves out of the beds and on to the lawn, run over them with the lawn mower, and then blow the chopped up leaves back onto the beds. This makes great compost and keeps us from having the expense of new mulch. » Don’t forget about the birds! Keep feeders clean and full, and keep baths rinsed. Metal and plastic baths can stay outside, but ceramic and clay need to be drained and stored to prevent cracking. For those of you that are always ready for

Christmas, let’s talk about holiday decorations! » If you have sturdy containers, transition them for the holidays. You can use plants or greenery to make beautiful decorations. Check our Pinterest for ideas. » Your yard may be a great (and cheap) source for decoration. Magnolias, hollies, hemlocks, boxwoods, pines, and other plants are great for fresh greenery. Cut branches and immediately place in water. I’ll remind you that you’re pruning when you take off those branches, so do it carefully! » Don’t forget nuts, seeds, and berries. Nandina berries, holly berries, pinecones, rose hips, acorns, Magnolia seed pods, and a host of other things can be used for accent. » If you’re going to buy a freshly cut Christmas tree, buy from someone you trust. Yes, I mean like Meadow View. I swear I’ve seen spray painted trees from roadside stands. Cheaper isn’t better if it burns your house down! This will be crucial with the drought. » Can we talk about poinsettias? These beautiful divas need special treatment. They don’t get that at box or warehouse stores, where I’ve seen them displayed outside or in unheated areas or loaded into the back of pickup trucks. That makes me sad, because they’re going to die and the poor customer thinks it’s his/her fault! Here are the poinsettia rules: • Rule 1: Poinsettias won’t survive cold weather. Anything below 50 degrees will injure it, even if the exposure time is short. • Rule 2: Poinsettias are fragile and shouldn’t be placed anywhere they can be bumped, brushed against, or kicked. • Rule 3: Poinsettias should always be placed in a sleeve for transportation, but the sleeve should be removed as soon as you get it home. It should also not be sleeved while on store shelves, because this camouflages disease and breakage. • Rule 4: Water when the top inch of soil is dry, but don’t let it stand in water. If you follow these rules, your poinsettia will have no problem lasting through the holidays. » We have some really cute gift and décor items, so keep us in mind as a source for gifts during the holidays. If you don’t know what to get, we have gift certificates in any amount. If you have any questions or need more details on anything, give us a call or send an email to hello@meadowviewgreenhouse.com. From all of us at Meadow View, we wish you a very happy holiday season!

Discovering Your Home’s Holiday Potential EVERY SEASON

brings with it an exciting and fresh new panorama of vibrant colors that amaze us no matter our age or where in our great country we call home. As for me, the upcoming Christmas holiday season is hands down my favorite season of them all. As an interior designer, I witness an incredible phenomenon at this time of the year as homeowners throughout all of East Tennessee decorate their home’s exteriors and interiors in preparation for the arrival of friends and family members in this time honored celebration of Christmas. The phenomenon I refer to is the discovery by homeowners of just how they have transformed both the look and feel of their homes with their holiday decorating efforts. Countless homeowners are left wondering just what the potential is for redecorating and updating their homes. If you can transform your home during the

holidays, why not transform your home for the entire year? That’s where Decorating Den Interiors’ team of award-winning interior designers come in. January is a busy month at Decorating Den Interiors, when we field numerous questions from homeowners inquiring about a home makeover. Questions range in scope from a total makeover to requesting our interior design expertise for a single room.

Home

But as always, in the back of the minds of each of these inquiries is the looming unasked question: Can I work with the designers or will they impose their personal preferences on me? Well, here’s the answer to your unasked question. At Decorating Den Interiors, our design team views themselves as facilitators. We use our expertise to help you articulate your preferences, tastes, and lifestyle, and then in partnership with you, we help you create the showcase quality look that you envision. If this holiday season has you wondering just what the potential is for your home, why not call the experts at Decorating Den Interiors? Happy holidays everybody!

Santa’s Suggestion for Enjoying Your Home’s Outdoor Living Spaces Next Spring

I

F YOUR HOME isn’t equipped with

retractable screens, will you be able to fully enjoy your home’s outdoor living spaces next spring? The answer is likely no. Why? Because flying and biting insects are probably keeping you indoors. But here’s a solution. While homeowners across the country are increasingly creating popular outdoor “rooms” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially made to be weather-proof, flying and biting insects often keep homeowners from using their new outdoor spaces. Retractable screens provide the perfect answer to these problems. By combining indoor and outdoor spaces, these innovative screen solutions enhance and promote our outdoor living experiences. They provide much needed shade and allow people to extend the time that they, family, and friends can enjoy their patios while keeping annoying, biting insects at bay. Large, motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of your home, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. The best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish your views or your home’s esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many of these retractable screen solutions can be seamlessly blended into virtually any architectural style. These retractable screens are available in a variety of different custom colors and wood grain finishes that help to coordinate your screens with your interior or exterior color schemes. The screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and be connected to your home’s automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection is most needed. So if you’re uncertain what to buy your family for Christmas this year, how about retractable screens from Screens of East Tennessee, creating a season of memorable out-of-door experiences with family and friends next year? For more information about retractable screen options, visit www.phantomscreens.com.

Typical hiding places are mattresses, box springs, and bed frames. If infestations become large, bedbugs may seek out other hiding places like furniture, under carpet, inside walls, etc. Dayton’s bedbug treatment protocol requires NO PREP by the homeowner, and we rarely recommend that anything be thrown away. Because inspections are labor intensive, there is a $75 charge, which is deducted from the treatment cost if bedbugs are found. Dayton’s GUARANTEES their bedbug treatments if the homeowners are cooperative and work with Dayton’s technicians throughout the inspection, treatment, and follow-up process. Do you feel dampness in your home? This could be caused by damp and moldy dirt basements and/or crawl spaces. The moisture problem must be solved FIRST! Dayton’s recommends sealing and enclosing your crawl space with the CleanSpace® Crawl Space Encapulation System, recognized industry-wide for excellent performance. Reducing moisture in your dirt basement or crawl space prevents mold growth, and your home will feel drier and healthier. If you use all the recommended components, the system comes with a 25-year warranty. Inspections are FREE! New customers will receive $250 to $500 OFF a CleanSpace® Crawl Space Encapulation System with all recommended components, plus Dayton’s will beat any competitor’s price by $100 with equal components for homes 1,500 square feet or more. Dayton’s other services include convenient quarterly perimeter pest control (rodents/spiders/ roaches, etc.), fall invader control (stink bugs/ box elder bugs/ladybugs/kudzu bugs), carpenter bee control (Apr-Aug), mosquito treatment (May-Oct), VA/FHA termite inspections, fungicide/moldicide treatments, and radon mitigation.

How Many Ways Are There to Clean an Oriental Rug?

T

RUTH BE TOLD, probably hundreds

of ways. As many as the human mind can conjure up. I’ve heard of Oriental rugs being washed on the driveway of a home using a garden hose, dishwashing detergent, and a stiff broom. Some other Oriental rugs, while still on a hardwood floor, have been cleaned in place, using the same methods as those used to clean wall-to-wall carpeting. Then there are the rugs that are hung in the backyard and beaten with a broom. There may be hundreds of ways to clean an Oriental rug, but based on decades of experience, and after considerable input from Oriental rug experts, including rug weavers themselves, there’s only one way to clean them thoroughly and safely, and that’s by washing them. The problem for homeowners, however, is that an 8x10 rug can weigh several hundred pounds when wet and is nearly impossible to wash by hand. That’s why we designed our very own rug spa that uses our proprietary 11-step washing process that will thoroughly and safely wash your fine Oriental rugs. Our highly specialized process allows us to safely move your rugs throughout our facility through our multiple step inspection process, dye stabilization test, pre-vacuuming, pre-conditioning, washing, water extraction, pH neutralizing, drying, grooming and combing, fringe cleaning, post-vacuuming, and inspection.

Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning is proud to announce that we’re a WoolSafe Approved Service Provider committed to promoting best practices in wool rug and carpet cleaning.

As is plain to see, it’s virtually impossible to duplicate this washing process on your driveway, in your home, or in your backyard. In fact, many of these alternative methods can actually permanently damage your fine Oriental or area rugs by abrading them on concrete surfaces, causing the dyes to migrate (bleed), or by adversely changing your rug’s pH. Not a DIYer project, Oriental rug washing is best left to an experienced professional – that is, if you value your rugs and your back. With just a few weeks before holiday guests begin arriving, isn’t it time to call Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning for all your upholstery, carpet cleaning, and rug washing needs? of the most common misconceptions that we respond to is the belief that Consign To Design is a second hand furniture store. Quite frankly, nothing could be further from the truth. Consign To Design is a 28,000 square foot furniture showcase featuring gently used, upscale furniture from homes in area communities, including Sequoyah Hills, Bearden, Farragut, Concord, and surrounding lake and golf front communities such as Tellico Village and Rarity Bay. Consign To Design also features brand new furniture closeouts and showroom floor samples from U.S. manufacturers at prices far below what most retailers pay. In addition to our large selection of name brand furniture, we also offer art, décor, and Oriental rugs. Consign To Design began more than five years ago with one objective, which was to offer shoppers the opportunity to purchase quality, name brand furniture at prices far below their original retail prices. Since then, and in response to your overwhelming response, we have had to relocate from our original 5,000 square foot retail space to our super showroom in the Market Place Shopping Center near The Home Depot. Shoppers really appreciate our numerous vignette displays that help them visualize just how our furniture pieces, including coordinating décor and art pieces, might appear in their homes. But the real secret to finding just what you want at just the price you want to pay is to shop early and often. Popular furniture often sells on the same day as it arrives on our showroom floor. We have even sold entire bedroom and living room suites as our associates were removing furniture from the moving van. If you’re committed to purchasing the highest quality furniture, décor, art, and area rugs for your home at the greatest possible savings, then the only name you have to remember is Consign To Design.

We Put the Excellence in Amish Excellence

F OR ME PERSONALLY,

one of the greatest experiences I’ve had since launching Amish Excellence in Farragut has been the many opportunities I’ve had to work with the Amish craftsmen that custom handcraft every piece of furniture we create for you. The simplicity of the Amish way of life and their dedication to their family, their neighbors, and their community are awe-inspiring. Their word is their bond, and their handshake is every bit as binding as a formally written contract. The furniture that these skilled artisans produce is a reflection of their unique culture, which is why so many people regard genuine Amish furniture as “legacy” furniture. That is, furniture that is destined to become family heirlooms. The lifetime commitment to their craft is an integral component of every furniture piece they build for your family. So why am I committed to visiting all of our Amish craftsmen? Well, first of all, there is often much confusion among customers purchasing Amish crafted furniture. The confusion often occurs when furniture manufacturers, who may employ members of their local Amish community, label their assembly line produced furniture as Amish made. At Amish Excellence, we only sell

56

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE December 2016

100% custom, all hardwood, hand-crafted furniture certified to be genuine Amish. It is also important to note that none of our furniture is produced in factories. Quite the opposite, 100% of our furniture is produced in woodworking shops located on Amish farms in states like Pennsylvania and Ohio. When you purchase a piece of furniture from Amish Excellence, you are investing in

the highest quality furniture made anywhere and a piece of furniture that will remain in your family for many generations to come. You are also investing in a piece of furniture produced by skilled Amish artisans that have passed their craft from family member to family member for many generations. Amish furniture is durable enough to be used every day and yet is of superb heirloom quality. Future generations will be reminded of you every time they glance at or use this furniture that you so carefully selected for both your family and theirs. If you would like to discover the world of genuine Amish custom, hand-crafted furniture, I invite you to visit me at Amish Excellence. Available in nearly every style and at prices often below furniture store prices on similar assembly line produced furniture, Amish Excellence is East Tennessee’s premier source for 100% genuine Amish made furniture.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library

Marks Unprecedented Milestone

D

O L LY

PARTON’S

Imagination Library, which began as a small community outreach in Dolly’s native Sevier County, Tennessee, has evolved to become the largest literacy program in the world. In December, the “little literacy program that could” marks another impressive milestone – one million books gifted to children around the world each month. To celebrate the unprecedented success, Evey Johns, a two-year-old from Conway, Arkansas, who just enrolled in the Imagination Library, has been randomly selected to receive a $30,000 college scholarship. The announcement was made by Dolly during her Pure & Simple concert tour stop in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, last month. The concert raised $500,000 to benefit the Imagination Library. “I thought long and hard about the best way to honor our achievement of reaching a million children a month,” said Dolly. “The Imagination Library is all about inspiring dreams, so what better way to pay tribute to this moment than by helping one special child pursue her college degree? I’m thrilled that today I can let the world know that precious little Evey Johns from Conway, Arkansas, will receive a $30,000 scholarship for the college of her choice.” The scholarship will be held in a special account and distributed to Evey when she enrolls in college. During the next 16 years, the amount of scholarship should grow to nearly approximately $50,000. Evey is enrolled in the Imagination Library in Conway thanks to the local affiliate in her area, Arkansas Preschool Plus. “The thought of our daughter going to college has been just that – a thought,” explained Evey’s mother, Connie. “Now, due to the enormous kindness and generosity of the Dollywood Foundation, that thought has now become a reality. Our family now has the means to develop a solid plan for our daughter’s future education. Thank you all so much for this unbelievable opportunity for our daughter.” In 2016, the Imagination Library and its local partners will gift nearly 11.5 million books to children from birth to age

five in participating communities in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia. To date, the Imagination Library, which is administered through the Dollywood Foundation, has provided more than 85 million books to children around the world. Arkansas Preschool Plus is just one of the many local affiliates the Dollywood Foundation works with to provide books to children. To provide the Imagination Library, a community must make the program accessible to all preschool children in their area, and the community pays for the books, promotes the program, and registers the children. The Dollywood Foundation manages the delivery of books to children’s homes. Arkansas Preschool Plus enrolls 960 children in Conway, Faulkner, and Perry counties. Currently nearly 15,000 children are enrolled in Arkansas. The Imagination Library currently is working with elected officials, foundations, and corporations in Arkansas in an effort to make the program available to all children from birth to age five in the state. About the Imagination Library Founded in 1995, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a book gifting organization that has, to date, mailed more than 85 million books to children in Australia, Belize, Canada, United Kingdom, and the United States. Each month the program currently mails more than

one million specially selected, high-quality, age-appropriate books to registered children from birth until they start kindergarten in participating communities. Dolly envisioned creating a lifelong love of reading in children, preparing them for school, and inspiring them to dream. Recent studies suggest participation in the Imagination Library is positively and significantly associated with higher measures of early language and math development. Penguin Random House is the exclusive publisher for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. December 2016 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

History

BY TODD MORGAN, DIRECTOR OF PRESERVATION FIELD SERVICES FOR KNOX HERITAGE/ETPA

A Significant Place in East Tennessee Disappears

I

N LATE OCTOBER, the City of

Morristown acquired the Morristown College campus. The 52 acre site, a National Register Historic District, is being demolished to make way for a new public park. As disheartening as that sounds to preservationists and alumni, it may be the thing that finally gives this silent site a chance to tell its important story. For more than two decades, the campus has sat neglected. Vandals destroyed buildings and started fires. Vagrants made their homes there. Neighbors did not appreciate living next door to hollow buildings with asbestos blowing freely across the lawns. Two of the most significant buildings burned down, the Laura Yard Hill Administration Building and the Refectory. The site has continually fallen into the hands of owners who never generated a viable plan for redevelopment. The community finally had all it could take and took control of the site. When we lose historic sites, it’s easy to point fingers. Historic buildings are complicated; a 52 acre former college campus even more so. One could argue that the city should’ve made more of an effort to save the campus years ago, but it’s not an easy decision to invest community dollars into an uncertain project, even if the dollars are there. The blame lies more with the irresponsible ownership that has plagued the old school. None of the previous owners, and it has changed hands several times, ever invested in stabilizing or even securing the buildings. As a preservation organization, we advocate for preserving the structures and places with historic or cultural significance in our region. Morristown College was one of those places. Will a lack of original structures affect how the college is remembered? Possibly. Regardless, it’s the unique story itself that’s now the important thing to keep alive. The City of Morristown is proposing a “heritage park,” and within that park there’s potential for the Morristown College story to be told in a new and impactful way. Perhaps future visitors to the site will learn that the first building was erected in 1830 and served as a church. That simple wood frame structure would later find use as a slave market, a secessionist meeting hall, and a makeshift hospital for wounded soldiers. The Civil War came in 1864 when the Battle of Morristown brought 5,000 Union and Confederate troops to the area. One of

58

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE December 2016

General John Vaughn’s Confederate lines was stationed on the site. Later a Federal occupation camp was established in the last months of the war and during the subsequent Reconstruction. That first little rectangular building stood through it all and found its next use as a Freedmen’s grammar school. By 1869, there were 62 students attending the school, which was growing. Missionary Almyra H. Stearns, a native of Plainfield, Vermont, arrived the same year amid increasing racial tensions. Taunts, threats, and even arson attempts prompted another teacher to write to then Tennessee Governor Brownlow for help. With the governor’s threat to send in the militia, community leaders rallied to help protect the teacher and her students. By 1880, the Holston Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church had voted to form two separate conferences, one white and one black. This action created an immediate demand for more African American ministers. Under the leadership of Judson S. Hill, a Methodist minister and missionary originally from Trenton New Jersey, the M.E. Church made a decision to purchase the hilltop property and expand Stearns’ school to meet the growing needs of East Tennessee’s black communities. Morristown Seminary was born. Stearns remained as principal of the elementary school while Rev. Hill and his wife, Laura Yard Hill, began to establish high school and college programs. Hill and other founders wanted to ensure that the gains and opportunities of freedom for African Americans had a place to be nurtured and passed on to future generations. It took just two months to have 100 students enrolled. By 1901, Hill saw the need to include industrial courses in the curriculum and changed the name to Morristown Normal and Industrial College. Students began receiving training in masonry, carpentry, iron work, agricultural practices, and domestic sciences. Many of the products produced in the classrooms, such as brooms from the broom manufacturing class, were sold across the United States to help fund the college. Rev. Hill successfully obtained philanthropic support from individuals and organizations such as Andrew Carnegie, the McCormicks of Chicago, and the Kelloggs of Battle Creek, Michigan. From these efforts, Hill was able to launch a major expansion of the campus and

built new dormitories and classrooms. At one point, the school even owned a 300 acre dairy farm. Respect for the school grew, and by 1914, Morristown N & I was recruiting young men from Africa. Its graduates were teaching and ministering throughout the South. Students of the industrial arts were filling local schools and offices with furniture. Its masonry program was among the best. The school experienced many changes in the following decades, impacted by changing cultural and economic conditions. By 1961, the school’s name had changed to Morristown College and was restructured as a two-year institution. In 1983, the U.S. Department of Interior listed Morristown College in the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district, but by that time, the school was struggling. Many similar schools found it difficult to compete with a new higher education system of community schools and regional universities. In 1988, Knoxville College, another historic African American institution, assumed control of the Morristown campus and continued to operate it as a junior college until 1994. What was once a landmark of hope and achievement has sat silent for too long. JoVita Wells, editor of “A School for Freedom: Morristown College and Five Generations of Education for Blacks,” noted that the school has received little scholarly attention despite its significant contributions to black education. Like so many lost places before it, we’re now left with only pictures to share and stories to tell. We hope future visitors to the historic site will hear it speaking and understand its importance.

The East Tennessee Preservation Alliance works to preserve the structures and places with historic or cultural significance in Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Hamblen, Jefferson, Knox, Loudon, Monroe, Morgan, Roane, Scott, Sevier, and Union counties. ETPA partners with Knox Heritage to serve as the regional arm for preservation activities in these 16 counties.

Dollywood Set to Celebrate “Best and Brightest” Christmas Ever New parade, two new holiday shows, four million Christmas lights highlight annual festival

AS THE ONLY THEME PARK in

the world to win Amusement Today’s Golden Ticket award for Best Christmas Event, it is fair to say Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas, presented by Humana, can be considered a gold standard for Christmas festivals. This year, however, the park is outdoing itself with the best and brightest Christmas event in Dollywood’s history. Guests can expect a multitude of merriment this year with the awe-inspiring new Parade of Many Colors, the remastered Christmas in the Smokies, the all-new It’s a Wonderful Life, four million festive lights, and a joyous holiday atmosphere guests have come to enjoy during this lively festival, which runs now through January 1. “Christmas is such a special time of year for me because some of my most precious memories are the wonderful times I had with my family during the holidays as a kid,” said Dolly Parton. “It’s the time of year when our traditions, along with our faith and the love of family, combine to create those sweet experiences we always remember. After all of the things I’ve been able to see and do in my life, it’s the times from those Christmases with my family I still hold most dear. I know the families who come to visit my Dollywood during this beautiful time of year will leave with some of those same moments they’ll treasure forever.” Like her new NBC holiday movie, Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love, Parton’s new parade celebrates the fun, faith, family, and harmony of the holiday season. The new parade includes whimsical floats, interactive characters, and a heart-warming, cheerful message for Dollywood guests to enjoy. Dollywood’s entertainment team brings a Christmas classic to life with the debut of It’s a Wonderful Life. Based on the timeless holiday story of love and generosity, small town

businessman George Bailey discovers the true value of life, family, and friends with a little help from his guardian angel, Clarence. Additionally, one of Dollywood’s greatest entertainment offerings is remastered in 2016, as Christmas in the Smokies returns to its traditional home at D.P.’s Celebrity Theater. Guests can celebrate the joy of the season while a cast of singers and dancers performs hometown holiday favorites while accompanied by a band of live musicians! Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, the beloved Christmas television special, again comes to life at Dollywood this season. Guests can meet Rudolph and his friends, including Clarice, Bumble the Abominable Snow Monster, and Yukon Cornelius, in Rudolph’s Holly Jolly™ Junction, a magical area where festive fun awaits. After meeting Rudolph and his friends, families can head to Clarice’s kitchen to decorate custom Christmas cookies or even take part in a few reindeer games! Dollywood’s entertainment, which in 2016 earned its 8th consecutive Golden Ticket Award for Best Shows, features several other beloved shows this season, including An Appalachian Christmas, ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, O’ Holy Night, My People,

and Christmas with The Kingdom Heirs. Guests also can experience Santa Land, a whimsical workshop where the smallest guests can share their wish list with Kris Kringle. Families can finish their visit with a traditional Christmas meal as several of Dollywood’s menus feature holiday-themed items. Among the new offerings this year are a Cornish hen, complete with sweet potato casserole and green beans, and a hot chocolate station. Returning favorites include turkey and dressing, Christmas ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, hot flavored drinks like wassail, and much more. Holiday desserts available throughout the park include pumpkin pies, pumpkin rolls, and pumpkin spice funnel cakes. Smoky Mountain Christmas guests can upgrade a paid one-day admission ticket to a regular 2017 season pass for as low as $27 (plus tax when buying four or more). Ticket purchasers receive credit for the value of a regular one-day ticket ($65) toward the purchase of a 2017 season pass. A season pass purchased during Smoky Mountain Christmas provides unlimited admission to this year’s Christmas festival along with Dollywood’s entire 2017 season. (A one-day ticket is valid for upgrade on the day of visit only.) Also, guests who purchase a Dollywood one-day ticket after 6 pm receive free admission to the park’s next operating day. For more information, including operating days and hours, daily show schedule, and more helpful tips to help plan a visit, call 1-800-DOLLYWOOD or visit www.dollywood.com. Catapult Your Sales Skyward

I

BELIEVE the primary reason for

missing the potential to achieve explosive growth in your small business might be your decision to place your customer service levels on the back burner. Entrepreneurs often rely on their websites, social media and online, print, on-air, and mail marketing campaigns to increase sales volume. Yet despite their best efforts to generate additional sales revenue, many of these same companies offer their customers a woefully low customer service experience that only serves to erode even their best sales efforts. In a 1970s episode of M*A*S*H, a popular TV satire on the Korean War, Major Frank Burns, a not-so-skilled surgeon, focused primarily on his military career, once stated: “This war wouldn’t be so bad if it were not for all of the wounded.” I’ve witnessed firsthand how many entrepreneurs who, in response to overwhelming customer sales and their inability to maintain acceptable customer

“No business can have enough good press. Every satisfied customer is a reporter on steroids, telling those they influence about the positive experience they’ve had with your company. ” service levels, begin viewing their customers as adversaries. A sort of, “My business wouldn’t be so bad if it weren’t for all of the customers” philosophy. All too often I’ve witnessed small business owners who have succeeded in increasing their sales only to leave a negative wake behind them as their newly found customers are forced to accept their below standard service levels. They’ve promised their customers 100%, delivered 70%, and become angry when the customer brings the difference to their attention.

Cheryl authored a proposal in the hopes of getting a $100,000 grant for Beaumont. “We had to submit a very thorough proposal complete with a budget and a timeline, so there isn’t a lot of wiggle room,” said Cheryl. “We plan to build an outdoor stage and an amphitheater. We will do a mosaic art project with a visiting artist, and then those times will be used to decorate the stairs to the playground. There was a piece of playground equipment that was removed last summer, and we will replace it with a climbing feature that can double as seating for the outdoor stage. There will also be lots of colorful painted games on an asphalt pad and some shade added to the playground.” Cheryl is currently in her third year teaching at Beaumont, Knox County’s only elementary arts magnet school. the staff at Beaumont after her daughter entered kindergarten there. “My mom was a home economics teacher,” said Cheryl. “My grandmother was a teacher. I had some amazing teachers, especially in high school, who I wanted to imitate. Plus, I’m loud and love an audience. I don’t think I had many other choices! Also, have you seen all the fun stuff that elementary art teachers get to wear?!” Cheryl earned her bachelor’s degree in art education from the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga, and a master’s degree in education from Tusculum. “Elementary art education is crazy!” she said. “As a high school teacher, I just came up with the motivation for my students, and they did the physical work. Now I don’t sit down. Everything is strategy. I have to know which materials are needed by which class and how to get them out and then put away. I think my experience as a party planner really helps me think about quick transitions and prep work

No business can have enough good press. Every satisfied customer is a reporter on steroids, telling those they influence about the positive experience they’ve had with your company. Conversely, they’re more than certain to pass along their negative experiences as well. Your competitor may have the “glitziest” website in town, but your commitment to a superior level of customer care will propel you past their façade if they fail to deliver the quality customer service their customers demand.

I love that Beaumont is really starting to look like an arts school, and I think having an art-themed playground is another exciting manifestation of what we are already doing inside our building.” to be ready for all my guests!” While it was Cheryl’s idea to submit the grant proposal, she credits many other people with getting it done. “We had help from the Great Schools Partnership, the Health Department, teachers, and parents,” she said. “Every time I needed help with something, we had a parent or staff member or a contact who had that skill set. Add to that the way that Knoxville rallied around us, and it’s just been a wonderful opportunity for our staff and our students to realize that, as a magnet school, we teach people all over Knoxville. “BMA has always been this great arts school, but now there is a lot more information available about what we are doing. I love that Beaumont is really starting to look like an arts school, and I think having an art-themed playground is another exciting manifestation of what we are already doing inside our building.”

John Fawaz With a 401(k) plan, you CERTIFIED FINANCIAL defer up to $17,500 ver- PLANNER™ sus Traditional and Roth IRA maximum contributions of $5,500 ($6,500 if you’re age 50 or older). You have until December 31, 2016, to take an RMD (Required Minimum Distribution) from your retirement plan if you’re over the age of 70 1/2 or you face a hefty 50% penalty. The most common mistake made is the failure to take an RMD for both an IRA and 401(k). You must take an RMD from each plan. Multiple IRA accounts are treated as a single account, so only one RMD is required. Consider making a charitable contribution of highly appreciated stocks. If you’re over 701/2 , donate your required RMDs to your favorite charity up to a maximum of $100,000. This could lower your taxable income and may even help shelter your social security income from taxes. If you realized losses on some stocks during the tax year, you can only deduct $3,000 of that loss. One strategy to consider, Tax Harvesting, is to sell some of the stocks you’ve made money on during the year to offset your stock losses. You could then wait 31 days and buy these same stocks back again. It’s important to wait 31 days, otherwise the transaction is considered a “wash sale” and you would forfeit the tax benefits. If you have a Traditional IRA, you might want to convert all or part of your IRA to a Roth IRA, providing you don’t increase your taxable income for the year. Converting to a Roth IRA may save you and your loved ones future taxes. Before you make any changes to any retirement plan, always consult a qualified tax professional. Teach Your Children about Abduction Prevention

HE HOLIDAYS are upon us,

and many of us will be in malls, shopping centers, and mixing and mingling in public among a crowd of people. Sadly, we have all seen the horrific news stories of children who have been abducted. Reports tell us that nearly one million children go missing each year. It is never too early to teach children ways they can keep themselves safe. » It is important that your children know what a stranger is and what a stranger is not. For instance, if your child should become lost at a store, mall, or other location, your child should be taught that it’s ok to ask someone that works there for help. While these people are strangers, they are generally helpful strangers. » Teach your children that if a stranger or someone they don’t know very well should try to grab them or take them somewhere they don’t want to go, that they should draw attention to themselves. Tell them that screaming

or crying isn’t enough, because people that are around might think they are just pitching a temper tantrum. Tell them that if a stranger should grab them or try to take them somewhere, they should yell something like “I don’t know you. Someone help me!” or “This person is taking me and I don’t know him!” » Tell your children that they are never allowed to leave your side, even if they are beckoned by someone who seems friendly or is offering them something nice. Tell them to tell you immediately if this happens. » If your children are older and they are out in a group setting doing holiday activities, they should be taught to still be aware of their surroundings. Teach them that if a vehicle should pull up alongside them, they should move away from the vehicle and roadway even if the person is asking for help or directions. The same goes if they are approached in a store, mall, or elsewhere. Move away from the person and alert an adult who is in charge of what happened.

» Teach your child to be friendly to all young people, but tell them that even older children and very young adults can do things that are bad or wrong. Tell your child if another youth touches them in a bad way, bullies them, or tries to get them to go somewhere they shouldn’t, to get away from the person and find you or another adult they trust to confide in. Things have certainly changed in the last 20-30 years. While no parent wants to alarm their children or make them live in fear, children should be educated on ways they can protect themselves. No longer should children be taught that they must obey all of the instructions given to them by strange adults. Some adults mean children harm. Keeping Your Commitments

I

KNOW you may be thinking that this

is a boring topic, but hold on, it’s really pretty awesome, because teaching our children to keep their commitments is one of the most important skills we can teach them that will positively affect their life. It is so important! Let me ask you... are there people in your life that you can depend on for just about anything? People you know that if you get in a real bind, regardless of how “bindy,” they will be there? Yes, me too. How do we know these people will be there? You’re right. We have watched them over time keep their commitments and follow through with the things that they have committed to. We have put them to the test and found that they pass with flying colors. They have kept their commitments of being a true friend, of helping the weary and honoring their word. If you’re like me, you have found that these people are less common these days. If you’re also like 66

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE December 2016

me, you cherish these people more than anything, because everyone needs people they can depend on. So here’s the question: Are you one of these people? I hope so, because you and I are not going to raise children who keep their commitments unless we do. If I were to ask your children today, “When your mom or dad tells you that they are going to do something like take you to the playground later this afternoon or take you to the movie on Saturday, can you count on it? Is there a very strong chance that they are going to keep their word, or is there a strong chance that something is going to come up that will keep them from keeping their commitment to you?” How would they answer me? Moms and dads, please listen. You must make sure that breaking a commitment to your children is the exception, not the norm. You and only you are the best way for your children to learn what being trustworthy

looks like and what it is. They have to see it, experience it, and know it in order to become it. They have to know that when mom or dad makes a commitment, then there is a 98% chance that it’s going to happen. That’s what gives children security and safety. No one likes to live in an unknown world. We adults hate it! We hate the unknown, so why on earth would our children like it? Please look for opportunities to make and keep commitments to your children, and also look for opportunities for your children to also make commitments. As they keep their commitments, they will increase in self-confidence and self-worth, which are the building blocks to making good choices.

ATTOOS HAVE BECOME increasingly popular.

Approximately 40% of people in the U.S. between the ages of 26-40 have at least one tattoo. However, the incidence of tattoo regret has also increased. A recent poll suggests that about 20% of individuals regret getting a tattoo. Fortunately, for those who rue their tattoo, the practice of tattoo removal has just recently taken a gigantic revolutionary step. Before lasers were used, people desiring to have their tattoos removed suffered through various procedures such as acid treatments, dermabrasion, salabrasion, and non-selective laser ablation. These procedures frequently resulted in significant scarring and left open the opportunity for serious infection. Surgical excision and subsequent skin grafting, while effective, also caused disfigurement. For decades, Charlatans have been hawking tattoo removal creams. At best, these creams are ineffective. At worst, they are expensive and can cause noticeable scarring. In the 1990s, physicians began employing Q-switched lasers to treat unwanted tattoos. While fairly effective, these lasers generally require at least 12 treatments and often as many as 18 or more. Q-switched lasers remained the gold standard for tattoo removal until the release of the PicoSure laser in 2013. With its picosecond pulse duration, the PicoSure laser literally shatters tattoo ink into microscopic dust-like particles that can then be eliminated by the body. The result is that it takes less than half the treatments of Q-switched lasers to remove a tattoo. In a published scientific study, 100% of patients obtained greater than 75% clearance after two to four treatments with the PicoSure laser. I had been evaluating the PicoSure laser prior to its FDA clearance. While this laser can treat all tattoo colors, what held me back from adopting this exciting technology was its inconsistent results with red ink. This concern has been specifically addressed by the addition of a 532 nm wavelength, which is designed to more effectively treat red, orange, and yellow tattoo ink colors. Even with the new gold standard PicoSure laser, tattoo removal remains a tricky business. As a board certified dermatologist at Southeastern Dermatology, I will be on-site to directly oversee your treatment and ensure the best possible outcome in the fewest number of sessions. Please schedule a complimentary consultation to see if this procedure is right for you.
