of a new year, I always take note of things I hoped to accomplish but did not because of the busyness of life. But this New Year was different. I found that I accomplished more than I expected. On my 2016 New Year’s resolution list was travel, health and wellness, d i v e s t i n g o f p r o p e r t y, a n d Photo by D. Surprisingly all of these resolutions were accomplished, and the accomplishment provided me a great sense of satisfaction, which left me optimistic about what could be accomplished in 2017. N THIS ISSUE OF Everything Knoxville, we are especially excited to feature Southeastern Dermatology and their team of compassionate and caring medical professionals. First launched by board certified dermatologist, Dr. Matthew Doppelt, in 2003, Southeastern Dermatology has become one of East Tennessee’s most recognized leaders in the treatment of skin disorders and the enhancement of the skin with their state-of-the-art cosmetic dermatology services. Selected by working physicians in Knoxville’s medical community as one of Cityview Magazine’s Top Docs for 2016, Dr. Doppelt and his highly trained team of conscientious medical caregivers have earned Southeastern Dermatology a reputation for providing a level of care that you might have thought no longer existed in today’s medical marketplace.

Providing patient-focused treatment for all their patients, Southeastern Dermatology offers an extensive array of services in the fields of medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology. To help you become better acquainted with Southeastern Dermatology, we bring you this interview with Dr. Doppelt. EK: Dr. Doppelt, tell our readers a little bit about your background, education, and training. Dr. Doppelt: I was born and raised in central Illinois. My father was a pharmacist, which is how I was introduced to the healing power of medicine. I graduated from Southern Methodist University with a bachelor’s degree in biology. From there, I completed a special masters in physiology program at Georgetown University before earning my doctorate degree at Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Prior to my dermatology residency, I completed an internal medicine residency through a major teaching hospital affiliate of Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, as well as Nova Southeastern University. It was during my internal medicine residency that I realized my true medical passion was for the practice of dermatology. To pursue this goal, I completed my dermatology residency through NSU and the North Broward Hospital District in Fort Lauderdale, where I had the honor of serving as Chief Resident during my third year. Because fields of medicine, including dermatology, advance rapidly, I keep up to date with these advances by maintaining an active membership as a Fellow of the American Academy Dermatology and the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, in addition to regular participation in continuing educational seminars and hands-on training classes. I am also frequently accused of “geeking out,” as you are as likely to see me reading a medical journal as you are to see me reading Car and Driver (another passion). EK: Many of our readers may not know the requirements to become a board certified dermatologist. You completed a three-year residency in dermatology after earning your medical degree, and you were also required to pass a board examination to become a board certified dermatologist. For individuals seeking dermatological treatment, why should your level of expertise be so important to them? Dr. Doppelt: To become a board certified dermatologist, one must first complete four years of medical school. After medical school there is typically at least one year of a medical internship followed by three additional years of a dermatology residency. After completing an approved residency, a candidate must then sit for a certifying board exam. As you can see, there is extensive training after medical school required to obtain this specialty degree. This is precisely

why individuals with dermatologic conditions should seek out a board certified dermatologist. EK: Your patients repeatedly describe you as a compassionate and caring healthcare provider possessing an excellent “bedside manner.” Tell us about your passion for both medicine and your patients. Dr. Doppelt: What first attracted me to medicine was the ability to serve people by helping to heal people. The knowledge that you can help relieve suffering or discomfort in patients brings me and my team a great deal of personal satisfaction. The practice of dermatology allows our team to do this while building relationships with each of our patients and their families. In a way, dermatology is unique in that the diseases we treat are often visible for others to see. For instance, it is both gratifying and humbling when you can treat a depressed psoriasis patient who is too embarrassed by their disease to go out in public. Working together with the patient, we help to restore not only their health, but their self-confidence as well, as they can once again enjoy going out in public in shorts and a t-shirt. They say thank you with their smiles. It’s more gratifying than I can express in words. We have instilled a unique culture of excellence at Southeastern Dermatology, where you will never be treated like a mere number, but rather as a member of our extended family. EK: You recently became an adjunct professor at Lincoln Memorial University – Debusk College of Osteopathic Medicine. What does that mean for your patients? Dr. Doppelt: In 1993, I was given the opportunity to pursue my dream of becoming a physician. I credit much of my success to the physicians who dedicated a portion of their time to teaching and mentoring the next generation of physicians. I feel a sense of responsibility to continue this fine tradition. The enthusiasm for learning that the medical students bring to both the classroom and our medical office is contagious. What this means to my patients is that from time to time, a medical student will be shadowing me in our office and the exam rooms. The staff always informs the patients when this is the case and asks for their permission for the student to participate. This offers both our team and our patients the opportunity to invest in the futures of these aspiring medical students. And no, our students are not offended if a patient declines. EK: There are three distinct areas of dermatology services that Southeastern Dermatology offers – medical, surgical, and cosmetic. Briefly describe each. Dr. Doppelt: One of the things I love about the practice of dermatology is that I never get bored because of the variety of conditions that I can treat. At Southeastern Dermatology, I have tried to create three centers of excellence – medical, surgical, and

cosmetic. The medical center of excellence focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases of the skin, hair, and nails. Conditions may be as common as acne, rosacea, eczema, or hair loss, but they may also be uncommon and require a dermatologist to properly diagnose and treat the ailment. The evaluation of skin lesions for cancer is another important aspect of medical dermatology. The surgical center of excellence focuses on the excision of both cancerous and non-cancerous lesions with skillful reconstruction to minimize the appearance of scars. The cosmetic center of excellence focuses on providing customized treatments using the latest technological advanced treatment devices, procedures, and products. Because no two patients are alike, we avoid the “cookbook” approach to treatment which seldom provides optimal results, choosing instead to develop a treatment plan as unique as the patient. EK: Let’s examine cosmetic dermatology more closely. What makes the cosmetic services offered at Southeastern Dermatology unique? You appear to be unique in that you are the only cosmetic dermatologist in the Greater Knoxville area. Why is that important, and how does that differentiate you from other practitioners offering cosmetic services? Dr. Doppelt: Dermatology and plastic surgery are really the only two specialties of medicine that have aesthetics at the core of their training. As a cosmetic dermatologist, I have honed that requisite core training through years of experience, advanced training courses, and being mentored by some of the most respected cosmetic dermatologists and plastic surgeons in the nation. I have also assembled a talented, compassionate aesthetic team to support me in this endeavor. We have a full-time product educator and cosmetic coordinator, as well as a highly capable aesthetician. At Southeastern Dermatology, careful individualized treatment planning, skillful, artful, and precise execution, and continued engagement through followup combine to provide superior results and the greatest patient value. EK: Is it true that you personally perform all cosmetic injections? Dr. Doppelt: It may come as a shock to your readers, but there are more than 1,000,000 individuals who could legally perform cosmetic injections in the U.S. The question that individuals should ask is, “Who will be performing my injections?” It is because of my passion for cosmetic dermatology that I personally perform all of the cosmetic injectables in my office. I don’t believe that someone seeking cosmetic injections should select their treatment options based solely on price. In the field of cosmetic medicine, we call this “commoditization.” Looked at another way, we all have access to paint, but it takes an artist to create a masterpiece. EK: Cosmetic dermatology is an area of Januar y 2017 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

medicine that is evolving rapidly. Talk about some of the newest technological advancements and state-of-the-art services and procedures you offer. Dr. Doppelt : New tools for aesthetic enhancement are continuously being developed and brought to the marketplace. I consider it my responsibility to thoroughly research each of these opportunities and only provide those that I feel offer the greatest value and results to my patients. We now have a large variety of injectables available to our patients, and the understanding of their unique properties and characteristics is essential in recommending the appropriate products to achieve optimal outcomes for each patient. Some of the newest injectable products available include Volbella for fine lines and wrinkles and Kybella, which permanently destroys fat under the chin. Southeastern Dermatology is proud to have been selected as the exclusive provider of the Picosure Laser, which has revolutionized the process of tattoo removal. We are also the preeminent provider of Ultherapy in East Tennessee. This non-invasive procedure utilizes ultrasound to lift, tone, and tighten the skin on the face, neck, and chest. We also offer non-invasive body sculpting in the form of SculpSure, as well as minimally invasive laser assisted liposuction, better known as SmartLipo and SlimLipo. We offer many other medical devices and treatments as well to assist you in addressing any of your cosmetic concerns. EK: Whether a patient is seeking a medical, surgical, or cosmetic procedure, having all of these service available through a single provider would appear to be in that patient’s best long-term interest. Dr. Doppelt: I whole heartedly agree. There is considerable overlap between the various facets of dermatology. Many of my medical patients go on to become surgical and cosmetic patients. Conversely, I have had numerous patients come in for a cosmetic procedure and during my assessment discover a skin cancer. I have even found two melanomas on BOTOX® patients. Fortunately, they were 48 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE January 2011 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE Januar y 2017

both early melanomas, which I was able to excise. We can now joke with the patient that “BOTOX® may have saved their life.” EK: Provide our readers with some details on your new facility. Dr. Doppelt : I moved to Knoxville in November 2003 and started my practice on the campus of Baptist Hospital in downtown Knoxville. As Baptist initiated consolidation plans, we elected to move our practice to its current location. I remember moving into the current location thinking that was all the medical space that we would ever need. However, the response from our patients to our unique approach of the practice of dermatology has led to growth that exceeded our most optimistic expectations. The opportunity to build a new office with about twice the square footage of the current office presented itself last year, and we should be able to relocate in to our new home in April 2017. The new office, which is adjacent to our existing facility, will be even more technically advanced, yet remain warm and inviting. We are already making plans to expand our centers of medical, surgical, and cosmetic excellence. EK: In closing, is there anything you would like to add or say to our readers? Dr. Doppelt : It is a great privilege to serve the dermatologic needs of the people of Knoxville. The growth of Southeastern Dermatology is really in thanks to our patients. The majority of new patients coming into the office are through personal referral. I often tell patients that the best compliment they can pay our team is to refer a family member or friend. If you have any medical, surgical, or cosmetic dermatology needs, I would like to personally invite you to discover the caring difference we offer at Southeastern Dermatology. Have a happy, healthy New Year!

Justin Goodbread, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™

Comprehensive Wealth Planning A Life’s Lesson I’ll Never Forget

I

BY JUSTIN GOODBRE AD, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PL ANNER™

GUESS it wasn’t a total surprise when,

in 2005, my mom and dad asked me to help them put together a financial plan to help them secure their retirement dreams. After all, I’m a Certified Financial Planner™ (CFP). In my career, it wasn’t unusual to share in the grief of my clients who experienced personal losses, but nothing could prepare me for my father’s (we called him Pops) totally unexpected death on October 20, 2016, at age 62. I still can’t describe the emotional roller coaster I’ve experienced. As the grieving and healing continue, as a family, we are grateful for the foresight that my parents demonstrated, putting into place 12 years ago a plan designed to protect themselves and their loved ones from life’s uncertainties. I wish I could encourage everyone who reads this article to put a comprehensive plan into place for their family to provide for not only retirement, but life’s unexpected twists and turns as well. Unfortunately, too many people postpone planning. Maybe they think that they’re too young, or perhaps they’re uncomfortable confronting their own mortality. I believe that many people don’t have someone to confide in that they feel they can trust. Regardless of the reason, the lack of a comprehensive financial plan for the future can make life’s uncertainties even more devastating. At only 59 years old, Mom will likely enjoy many more productive years surrounded by her three children and 11 grandbabies. Fortunately, the decisions Mom and Pops made in 2005 will permit my mom to continue to live comfortably in retirement and will not necessitate having to return to the workplace as so many other spouses have had to do to make ends meet. I, as I am sure so many of you were, was very moved when a member of the Reagan family shared with all of us the love letters that the former president wrote to his wife, Nancy. My pops’ love letter to Mom and his legacy to his children and grandchildren, and I hope you, too, is to demonstrate our love for our families by carefully providing for their futures. Despite his relatively young age and totally unexpected

passing from a massive heart attack, I am confident that Pops achieved the peace of mind that we all search for in life, knowing that we have provided for those we love the most. Comprehensive wealth planning is not something reserved for the mega-wealthy. That’s a common misconception. Mom and Pops were middle-class Americans. They never owned new automobiles or lived in fancy homes. Their real wealth came from their love for each other and their family. Their goal was to live a life free from the worry of money or the prospect of outliving their retirement nest egg. My dad’s passing has given me a renewed passion. The comprehensive wealth plans I create for individuals and families are far more than mere forms and spreadsheets. I am confident that what I have experienced firsthand with Pops’ loss provides me with even greater insight to be able to help you and your family navigate life’s uncertainties. With the beginning of a new year, why not thank the Lord for all of your blessings? As a resolution for 2017, I would like to encourage you to put a comprehensive wealth plan into place to provide for those you care about the most. Please feel free to contact me for assistance. Stop rolling the dice.

Something Worth Barking About

Stop That Barking! MANY PEOPLE THINK

dogs bark as an act of aggression. Not true! Dogs vocalize to communicate a warning, emotion, desire, or happiness. Getting upset and yelling at a dog when it’s barking is never helpful. There are five basic reasons dogs bark. To teach a dog not to bark at certain times, you must know why he’s barking. » Excitement barking: Expresses happiness to the expectation of something good. Don’t punish joy! Let the dog “talk” about the excitement. Yelling at the dog is misinterpreted as “I’m barking, so my owner barks, too.” » Warning barking: Least heard type of barking, but the first type of bark people recognize. Used in situations where the dog believes either other dogs or humans need to be alerted to danger. Place yourself between the dog and whatever he perceives as the threat. Let him know you’re coming to the rescue. » Fear barking: A call for help. Very high pitched, similar to excitement barking but comes in a long series. Sounds like hysteria, sometimes ending in a howl. Punishment makes the barking much worse. Keep the dog out of fearful situations. Remain calm, talk in

a smooth, not harsh voice. » Guard barking: The hardest type to suppress. Often accomplished by growling bark. People view it as aggressive, but it’s not. This is normal “canine behavior.” Territorial barking is not necessarily fear based. Territoriality is built into canine DNA. Don’t ignore this bark. Mitigate it by acknowledging the dog did his job. Calm the dog. » Frustrated barking: Often heard by dogs tied up, alone outside, not allowed to be with people. Heartbreaking to hear. The solution is simple. Take the dog inside, and allow it to be part of the family. Stay calm and don’t ever get angry with barking. Dogs continually communicate. At Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits, great relationships are built between staff and canine guests through trust, respect, and open communication.

Star-Studded Smoky Mountains Rise Telethon Raises Nearly $9 Million (So Far)

ILLIONS WATCHED

Smoky Mountains Rise: A Benefit for the My People Fund telethon, and millions were raised. The telethon, broadcast on GAC, AXS-TV, RFD, and The Heartland Network last month, received huge donations from music stars like Taylor Swift, Kenny Chesney, Chris Stapleton, Chris Young, Paul Simon, and Dierks Bentley but also from families across the country who just want to give the people of Dolly Parton’s home area a hand up in the tragic wildfires. “I am overwhelmed by the generosity of the people who have donated from all across the country and to my friends who donated their time, talent, and money for My People,” said Parton. “The response has been so overwhelming that we haven’t been able to count all of the donations yet; right now, in total, we have raised about $9 million dollars for the folks who lost everything in Sevier County.” The total amount raised is expected to rise as mail donations are counted. Anyone who would like to make a tax-deductible contribution to the My People Fund may visit www. dollywoodfoundation.org. For those wishing to send donations via mail, those contributions should be sent to: My People Fund, c/o Dollywood Foundation, 111 Dollywood Lane, Pigeon Forge, TN 37863. Donations are also being accepted by texting DOLLY to 501501 for a one-time $10 donation or DOLLY25 to 501501 for a one-time $25 donation. Messaging and data rates will apply. Bridge Group Raises Money for Gatlinburg Fire Victims

game for improving memory and enhancing thinking skills. Another big bonus for bridge players is the fact that it provides social opportunities unmatched by other interests, because it’s so much fun and you meet so many interesting people. But few people know how a simple bridge game can impact a need in a neighborhood, a community, a city, a state, a nation, or even the world. The American Contract Bridge League consists of more than 167,000 members. This story is about 1,000 of those members and what they are doing to help the victims of the fires that recently destroyed homes and businesses in the Gatlinburg area. These 1,000 people live in Crossville, Knoxville, Maryville, Tellico, Oak Ridge, Kingsport, Johnson City, and Morristown in Tennessee and in Abingdon, Virginia. They are the members of Unit 165 of the American Contract Bridge League, and they have participated in 16

bridge games for charity for many years. On December 1, Bill Waters, a retired Knoxville attorney and President of ACBL Unit 165, announced that he would like to launch a special Unit 165 fundraiser for the victims of the horrific fires in the Gatlinburg area. He suggested that each player place $1 in a special basket each time they play a game during the month of December. This money would be donated to victims of the Gatlinburg fires. There were 36 players at that Knoxville game where Bill first presented the challenge, and the basket total was $600 at the end of the game. The total increased to $10,000 in the Knoxville and Oak Ridge games alone in just five days. Including generous donations from other games in the unit, the ACBL, and the Unit 165 Board, the total now exceeds $40,000 and is increasing daily. The American Contract Bridge Charity Foundation donated $25,000, and that check was presented to Dolly

Parton just before the telethon televised on December 13. Unit 165 designated certain games in December as charity games, and a portion of all proceeds from the games will be donated to the fire victims. Other units and even entire districts within the ACBL followed suit and also planned charity games in December for the fire victims. (Estimations indicate a possible total of $100,000.) The ACBL and the units and districts therein have always donated to charities a portion of the money collected as entry fees in games designated as charity games. But this special challenge presented by Bill Waters on December 1st began with the members of Unit 165 and has “spread like fire to other units and districts in the American Contract Bridge League. As a result, most ACBL districts located east of the Mississippi River played bridge in December to raise money for the victims of the fires in Gatlinburg.

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE Januar y 2017

It’s that time of promises that we make on New Year’s day to improve our physique and overall health. Is it possible to stay the course when it comes to these commitments, or are there pitfalls that set us up for failure to persevere? Are there strategies that need to be put into place to help with our success? There are things you can do that may help you stay on track. When it comes to exercise, get a friend, partner, or someone that can hold you accountable. Exercising together is not only fun but also provides an incentive. Exercising can be something simple, such as walking, but it is important to get moving. Sitting has its pitfalls. Not only do we not burn calories when we sit, but our cardiovascular system becomes unhealthy. Exercise increases good HDL cholesterol, which helps maintain healthy arteries and also can reduce blood pressure. By increasing your heart rate through exercise, you reduce stress, increase lung capacity, and increase the ability to sleep. It is time to make that commitment to exercise. Even if initially you only move your arms in circular motions, just get started, and you will be surprised how you can build from that. Your stamina will increase as you slowly add more to your routine. Hydration, hydration, hydration. Unless there are contraindications such as congestive heart failure or kidney disease, for example, drink water equal to half your weight in ounces daily. Debates are ongoing as to the quality of water to drink, but drinking 16 oz. of alkaline water first thing in the morning before ingesting anything else is a great way to start the day. Then, throughout the day, continue to drink the appropriate amount needed to stay hydrated. Dehydration occurs not by just heat through perspiration but also through breathing. Try breathing on a mirror or window, and you can see how much moisture you are losing with every breath. This adds up during the day and should be replenished. It is estimated that we lose approximately 2.5 liters of fluids a day as part of our excretory process, including lungs and skin. Of course, as always, consult your health care provider for tips and approval if there are health concerns. Another strategy is to consume a smaller

amount of food at each meal. Get a salad plate and eat from this size of plate, and don’t return for refills. Our society is inundated with “all you can eat” food bars that have contributed to obesity in our country. Volume control is a must for successful weight control. Eating smaller portions may actually rev up the metabolism. “The Fast Metabolism Diet” by Haylie Pomroy is a good resource. How about the foods that we eat? Additives are not a person’s best friend. MSG is an additive that makes us addictive to food. Remember the potato chip ad that said “I bet you can’t eat just one?” MSG makes us want to overeat. Monosodium glutamate is an excitotoxin and has been associated with problems such as headaches, flushing, poor attention, fibromyalgia, weakness in the legs and arms, and stomach disorders. MSG is found in many products and is disguised under names such as autolyzed yeast, hydrolyzed protein, and whey protein, to name a few. Becoming a label reader is important for helping you stay on track for the New Year. If you haven’t started eating whole grains, this is a good time to start. Staying away from broken grains such as breads and noodles is a must for losing weight. Bread and noodles are broken down into simple sugars, which turn into weight gain. Whole grains, however, are complex sugars that require digestion. Simple sugars add weight, and complex sugars, if not overeaten, do not. Along with this, eating simple white sugars should be avoided as well for the same reason. Sweeteners such as grade B maple syrup, agave, and stevia are better sources for adding sweetness to desserts. Staying away from other flour products for baking cookies and cakes or making pancakes are an equally important step in helping to achieve these goals. Strategies for maintaining successful commitments are important for helping with New Year’s resolutions. Don’t lose heart. Making strides in the right direction can positively impact your health, physique, mental wellbeing, and attitude. Taking two steps forward and one backwards is still keeping you heading in a positive direction. Make 2017 a great year by using strategies to help you keep your goals. Remember that slow and steady wins the race.

here or there that could use some work? Even those who eat right and workout regularly sometimes wish they could just shave an inch or two from a particular area. Through its association with Slender Body Solutions, Spa 9700 is able to offer their clients an affordable, comfortable way to lose inches using the Body Light Technology. The Body Light machine uses lipid peroxidation technology, which uses an LED system to penetrate 10-12mm into your layer of fat. The treatment is a safe, 15-minute process. Light stimulation opens pores in the fat cells, which release their fatty acids into the space between cell membranes. This opening allows the triglycerides to escape and the fat cells to empty and shrink. These fatty acids are then transported to the circulatory system and metabolized by muscle movement during exercise. This quick and easy fat loss procedure provides predictable spot reduction with no pain, no weight loss drugs, and no invasive surgery! The entire treatment takes about 30 minutes. You will be able to treat the exact area of your concern. The average client loses two inches in six to nine visits (two to three visits per week). After treatment resume a healthy diet and exercise plan, and you will be able to maintain your loss indefinitely. Spa 9700 is offering 10% off its list prices of one treatment for $79, three treatments for $189, or six treatments for $329 through the month of January 2017. Jewelry Artisan Cathy Barnes

A Journey of Many Years and Miles

BY VICKIE SAL ADIN, OWNER OF GALLERY ON MAIN

J

EWELRY ARTISAN Cathy Barnes,

a Kingsport, Tennessee native, has lived a life on the move thanks in large part to her husband’s military career. After graduating as a Registered Nurse from St. Mary’s School of Nursing in 1966, she and her husband, Tom Barnes, a member of the U.S. Air Force, were transferred to Panama City, Florida. When Tom received orders for Vietnam, Cathy returned to Tennessee while he was overseas. When Tom returned from his tour of duty, he and Cathy relocated to Dallas, Texas. While in Texas, Cathy returned to school to earn her degree as a Nurse Practitioner. After 30 years and another transfer for Tom to Quitman, Texas, Cathy retired from her nursing career and pursued her passion for quilting. In 2007, she returned home to Tennessee, where she continued to quilt but expanded her artistic horizons to include jewelry making. Cathy has displayed her jewelry designs at Gallery on Main since it first opened. You can see Cathy’s creations at Gallery on Main in historic downtown Sweetwater. All hand-crafted design originals, you can view Cathy’s jewelry, as well as the original creations of dozens of other regional and local artists and crafters, featured at Gallery on Main.

was quoted as saying “change is the only constant in life.” In December 2012, after our recovery from an earlier devastating fire, The Mansion restaurant opened on our second floor retail space. Owned and operated by chef Lea Watson, The Mansion quickly became a favorite dining spot for so many area residents and visitors to historic downtown Sweetwater. Lea, who has done an extraordinary job, has decided to pursue other interests. I know that you will all join me in wishing Lea the very best in her future Chef Josh Russell endeavors. You will be delighted to know, however, that the restaurant will remain open. And, as is only appropriate, we have renamed the restaurant Upstairs at The Mansion. Upstairs at The Mansion will reopen in early to mid-January after we complete some needed modifications to our kitchen, food preparation, and service areas. It will be managed by chef Josh Russell, who has more than 17 years of experience in the restaurant and food service industry. Our hours will remain the same during our transition, but Josh is receptive to your ideas to add additional menu items and extending his hours of operation. NE OF OUR favorite ques-

tions to ask is, “How did you hear about Random Acts of Flowers?” For many, it was through television or newspaper stories. For others, it was through word of mouth. But the best is when people first learn about us by having been personal recipients of a RAF arrangement. Many times we hear that our visit was a highlight of a hospital stay. Or we hear from a family member that the time we spent with a loved one uplifted the whole family. There is an element of magic that comes along with the stories of recipients who received an arrangement that included a favorite flower or color. On one delivery, a volunteer picked out an arrangement that had been made in a large, smiley face coffee mug. When she walked into the hospital room, she met a young girl surrounded by cards

and balloons with smiley faces on them. Somehow our flowers have a knack for finding their way in the hands of just the right recipient. There is no better way to experience the joy of a Random Acts of Flowers delivery than through the words of a recipient. Do you have a RAF story to share? Please help us keep the joy of our mission going by sharing your experience at www.rafknoxville.org and click on “contact us.” Random Acts of Flowers improves the emotional health and well-being of individuals in healthcare facilities by delivering recycled flowers, encouragement, and personal moments of kindness. NOXVILLE’S 2017 concert

season is off to an explosive start with Tedeschi Trucks Band’s show at the city’s beautiful and historic Tennessee Theatre on January 26th. The Jacksonville, Florida-based band is led by husband and wife team, Susan Tedeschi and virtuoso guitarist Derek Trucks, and is backed by 10 of the best musicians jamming today. Susan is the primary lead vocalist in Tedeschi Trucks Band and is also an amazing blues guitarist in her own right. If you haven’t heard her sing and play “Midnight in Harlem,” you’re missing out on a real treat. With three studio albums, including a Grammy-winning debut, they are one of the best blues rock bands touring the planet today. Derek took time out of his busy schedule to chat about the shows on the current tour, as well as the band’s new CD, Let Me Get By. Derek started off by sharing how the tour is going so far. “It’s been a great year, but it’s been pretty intense,” he said. “The last six months – really, in some ways, since we put out this last record – the band’s just in a better place musically, personally. Every tour seems to get a little better. There’s been one or two runs this year that we played our best stuff to date. I feel like we’re on the right track.” The band’s new CD, Let Me Get By, is a phenomenal body of work – probably their finest yet. Regarding how much of the new album would be performed during this tour, 26

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE Januar y 2017

Derek said, “We play most of those tunes – at least two or three a night, but it does shift quite a bit from show to show. They’ve been a lot of fun to play and have taken on a life of their own.” Obviously proud of the album, Derek continued, “That record was a turning point for the band; it was all done in-house. We wrote all the tunes as a group. It was a great moment for the band, and I feel like we got better, musically, coming out of making it. We’ll look back on that record as being when the band became realized. “There’s a lot of stuff on the record that I still enjoy listening to. I don’t put our records on and listen often, but I do go back. We’re mixing a live record now, and I go back and listen to the album just to check in on it to see how the mixes hold up. Something feels really natural, to be honest about it.” Asking an artist what their favorite song is on one of their albums is like asking a parent who their favorite child is. Instead, I asked the legendary guitarist which song he would point people to as the calling card for the entire CD. “Let’s see… there are a few that I can say we enjoy playing a lot right now. ‘I Want More’ and ‘Let Me Get By’. I loved recording the tune ‘Hear Me’. We really haven’t played that one live yet. For some reason, those three seem to stick out.” Artists are always nervous about what their fans’ reception to a new project is going to be.

I asked Derek what fan reaction has been like for the new material. “This year there’s been a big wave,” he said. “We can feel it. You look out in the crowd when you play some of those tunes and you can tell that people know the music. They know the record. We’ve had that a little bit in the past, but I feel that everything kind of ratcheted up a bit. It’s the most well-received of anything we’ve done as a band. The fact that we have our own studio and this was the first record we did everything on our own. We were between record labels. From top to bottom, we just did it the way we wanted to do it. That’s a rare thing. You don’t get that chance very often. We’re somehow avoiding being micro-managed.” The sign of a great album or performance is when a band or artist leaves their fans craving for more. That’s how I feel after devouring Let Me Get By, so I asked if there were already other albums in the works. “Yeah, we have a live record that’s close. We’re probably a few days away from finishing that. That’ll be next, and then we’re heading back into the studio sometime on this next break to start writing and digging in on a new record. But that will probably be a little further down the road." There may still be a few seats available for the band’s January 26th show, so check www. tennesseetheatre.com for ticket availability. ONDER MOUNTAIN STRING

Band has always played music by its own set of rules. Bending bluegrass, rock, and countless other influences that the band cites, Yonder has pioneered a sound of their own. With their traditional lineup of instruments, the band may look like a traditional bluegrass band at first glance, but they’ve created their own music that transcends any genre. Banjo player Dave Johnston points out, “What could be more pure than making your own music?” Yonder’s sound cannot be classified purely as “bluegrass” or “string music,” but rather it’s an original sound created from “looking at music from their own experiences and doing the best job possible.” The band continues to play by their own rules on their new record, The Show. The Colorado-based foursome has crisscrossed the country during the past 11 years, playing such

varied settings as festivals, rock clubs, and Red Rocks Amphitheater in the band’s home state. Their loyal fan base has been built from this diverse setting of music venues as fans latched on to their genre-defying original sound. In between tours, the band spent time this last year working on its 5th studio album. The Show is the second album with rock producer Tom Rothrock (Beck, Elliott Smith, Foo Fighters). While some might scratch their heads as to why a string band would want a rock producer, this decision was a natural choice for the band. “We don’t have a lot of nostalgia for the past,” says Johnston. “You shouldn’t try to recreate the 1940s. I like to think of us as informed by the past and all the great performers before us. But we also want to look forward rather than give people something that has already been perfected.”

AST YEAR, as we

were filing a client’s tax return, we were notified by the IRS that a return had already been filed under that social security number. After d o i n g so m e re se a rc h , we found that identity thieves had Yvonne Marsh, CPA, swooped in early and filed a CFP® fraudulent tax return, claiming a large refund which had been direct deposited in their bank account. We then had to submit additional proof that our client was the rightful owner of the social security number before their return could be processed – a long and laborious process, as you can imagine. Unfortunately, that wasn’t an isolated instance – we had several clients walk in our doors who have experienced this unsettling fraud in the last few years. It seems that identity theft is all around us and becoming common place. The good news is that there are steps you can take on a daily basis to minimize your risk. Here are some quick tips: » Stay vigilant and know what is being reported on your credit: Order a free credit report from www.annualcreditreport.com or a free report of checking accounts opened in your name from www.consumerdebit.com. » Be alert for statements that don’t arrive on time – the mailing address may have changed. » Review not just your bank and credit card statements, but review your health insurance statement of benefits, too. Health insurance fraud is a booming business. » Mail your bills from the post office rather than leaving them in your mailbox. » Shred credit card offers that come in the mail or, better yet, request to stop receiving them at www. optoutprescreen.com. » Monitor your minor children’s credit report – a child’s social security number may be compromised for years before it is discovered. Learn more about ways to reduce the risk of identity theft, how to spot it, and what to do if it happens to you. Call today for a complimentary appointment, or join us on January 25th from 11:30 to 12:30 for our free Lunch ‘n Learn at Lakeside Tavern. Each guest will also receive a free FTC Guide “Taking Charge: What to Do if Your Identity is Stolen.”

featured the best new attraction of 2016, Lightning Rod, as well as the successful first anniversary of Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort, The Dollywood Company continues to provide more unique experiences at each of its family-friendly properties. Two new family rides debut this summer at Dollywood providing thrilling new adventures for guests. The first is Drop Line, a 200-foot tall free-fall experience that towers over Timber Canyon and provides an incredible view of the park before its exhilarating finish. The drop tower ride lifts Dollywood guests nearly 20 stories above the Canyon’s pool before plummeting them back to the ground in a thrilling rush. Also new is Whistle Punk Chaser, a junior coaster that throws exciting twists and turns at Dollywood’s younger loggers, helping prepare them for the day. They can join their parents aboard the award-winning Thunderhead wooden coaster. “As everybody already knows, family is very important to me,” said Dolly Parton. “These days there doesn’t seem to be enough time for families to be together, whether you’re just a couple like me and Carl or you have 12 kids like my family did growing up. That’s why we continue to add all these new rides and shows for families to experience together. “We have something for everyone, but even more important, we have something for you AND your family. We’re adding so much this year; I’m calling 2017 ‘the year of the family!’” In addition to the new attractions, families have two engaging new events to experience 2017. Just in time for families enjoying spring break, the park will introduce enra, a Tokyobased dance company who was featured on America’s Got Talent in 2015. The group 30

Interactive video and lights combine with the talented performers to create a unique, cutting-edge experience for guests. In October, Dollywood’s Harvest Festival adds the spectacular GREAT! Pumpkin LumiNights event. This nighttime event immerses families in fabulous fall pumpkin illumination. Additionally, a new pumpkin trail comes to life after dark with a number of spectacular pumpkin displays glowing with the fire of fall. The festival also includes the Southern Gospel Jubilee, which brings in the greatest Southern gospel talent around. “We are really excited about adding the GREAT! Pumpkin LumiNights to our Harvest event,” said Gene Scherrer, Dollywood Vice President and General Manager. “We’ve created a number of impressive displays that will light up the night and allow us to add some new experiences for families to enjoy the fun of fall in a uniquely Dollywood way.” The company also recently announced the addition of TailSpin Racer, a multi-lane, mat-racer-style slide to Dollywood’s Splash Country for 2017. The parks’ 2017 additions are all part of Parton’s $300 million investment in Dollywood announced in 2013. ONNIE MILSAP ranks as the pre-eminent country soul singer of his generation. He also represents much more than any two-word definition can convey: A humble, overtly friendly fellow with a talent as vast and multi-dimensional as the American South. Milsap provided country music with one of its most important voices, as the genre was moving beyond its rural roots into the mainstream of modern entertainment. Country music couldn’t have found a man more suited to lead the

charge. Steeped in the mountain music of the North Carolina hills and schooled in classical piano, Milsap early in life found inspiration in a wide variety of music. Even as he mastered Beethoven and Mozart, his heart belonged to hardcore country and rhythm-and-blues – music he heard beamed from powerful radio stations located in Nashville. Those earthy sounds about life and love provided a young, impoverished blind boy with a connection to a world beyond the harsh reality of his daily existence.

Amish Excellence: The Best New Year’s Resolution Ever B Y A N G I E C A R R O L L , O W N E R O F A M I S H E XC E L L E N C E

L IKE SO MANY

of you, I’ve made numerous New Year’s resolutions throughout the years. But perhaps the most significant resolution I ever made was my decision to pursue my dream of owning my very own small business. After nearly three decades in human resource management, this decision seemed monumental. My interest in interior design, decorating, and event planning really did prepare me for

ownership of Amish Excellence. Certainly launching a retail furniture store might have seemed a logical decision for me, but it just wouldn’t have been the same. You see, today’s furniture, regardless of the brand name, is for the most part generic, being produced on an assembly line, in a factory, usually located offshore. The furniture offered at Amish Excellence is worlds apart from the furniture offered in the “big box” stores. The Amish Excellence story begins with the individual craftsmen. It begins with a more than three century old culture that places great emphasis on faith, family, and work ethic. Every piece of Amish furniture we sell is 100% hand-crafted, hand-selected U.S. hardwoods. The skilled artisans that produce our furniture carry on a craft that their family has embraced for many generations. The quality you’ll discover in each piece of furniture these craftsmen produce is unparalleled and simply can’t be reproduced in a factory.

So just where is our furniture produced? The answer is simple. Amish furniture is produced in private workshops you’ll find on many Amish farms. This is a unique distinction, because Amish Excellence does not sell factory manufactured furniture, where a small group of Amish workers may be employed, as Amish made furniture. Robert Burns in 1788, this poem, which was later set to a popular and traditional folk song, celebrates t h e p r e s e r va t i o n o f old friendships. But these old friendships celebrate personal relationships and not that older, outdated furniture and décor that you made another New Year ’s resolution to replace again this year. If the only thing that’s preventing you from shopping for newer furniture, area and Oriental rugs, and décor is cost, then we can help you keep this year’s resolution to update a single room or your entire home. At Consign To Design’s 27,000 square foot super showroom, we offer everything you’ll need to update your home while leaving your budget intact. That’s easy: Consign To Design accepts consignment, gently-used, major brand name furniture from homes throughout Bearden, Sequoyah Hills, Farragut, and upscale lake and golf front communities, including Tellico Village and Rarity Bay. Much of the furniture and décor items we feature come from relocations, downsizing, and estates, in addition to the brand new factory closeouts. So celebrate by singing Auld Lang Syne to old acquaintances but goodbye to your old and outdated furniture and décor and hello to big savings on your new furniture and décor from Consign To Design.

Know Before You Go:

Trusty House Hunting Tips

Y

OU HAVE officially decided to

embark on the journey of house hunting. Before you cross the threshold of one homestead in search of that elusive dream home, there is much work to be done. Here are some trusty tips to arm yourself with. Enlist help To begin your adventure, we suggest bringing along a guide to help navigate your journey. Hiring a Realtor® will automatically give you an expert’s insight into each question you may have. Hunt within budget Know your limits. Ask your agent who they recommend for a mortgage lender. Once you have a pre-approval letter in hand, you’ll have an idea of the price range. Stay a little below your approved limit to keep your budget under control. Location and surroundings There’s more to a home than what’s inside. Consider your commute time to work. Are you near a favorable route for the daily drive? What about schools? The neighborhood There are subdivisions and there are homes with sprawling acreage on residential streets. Which do you prefer? If you see a home in the daytime that you like, go back at night to examine the atmosphere. This will be a clue as to the safety of the area. Priority list Sit down with your family and make a list of priorities. Give a copy of the list to your agent. It’s rare to find a home that meets every priority. Determining which items on your list are needs versus wants will save you time. Be flexible without settling. Now that you are armed with the knowledge and understand how to effectively begin the search for a home, you will have less stress during the process and more time to enjoy the hunt! A Healthy New Year’s Resolution for Your Home BY KERRY MCDUFFIE, OWNER OF SUPERIOR CARPET & RUG CLE ANING

W

HAT RESOLUTIONS are you

making for the New Year? Are they to eat healthier, exercise more often, make wiser financial decisions, earn more income, or reduce potential health risks within your home? If one of your resolutions is to protect your family from potential health risks within your home, Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning can help. Not surprisingly, the quality of the air within your home can have a significant impact on your family’s health. There are many factors that can determine the quality of your indoor air, including the condition of your home’s carpeting, rugs, and upholstery. There are steps you can take on a regular basis, such as vacuuming, that will help improve indoor air quality. However, vacuuming has limitations, and only professional cleaning of these surfaces will deliver optimum results. The process of delivering optimum cleaning starts with the use of water. Sounds simple enough, but not if the carpet and rug cleaning company you select relies on ordinary tap water. You see, water is the universal cleaning solvent that’s used to remove soil and contaminants that can accumulate over time in carpeting, rugs, and upholstery. Superior uses only pure, soft water from Kinetico, which is the only safe and proven method to remove these contaminants. Because untreated tap water contains chlorine, minerals, and silt, this untreated water can actually become the source of additional contaminants that remain after the cleaning is completed. Put another way, the water that you rely on to remove contaminants can actually add contaminants. Because your home’s Oriental rugs cannot be professionally cleaned using the same methods used for carpeting and upholstery cleaning, Superior offers homeowners their proprietary, multi-step cleaning process, which is performed in their state-of-the-art Oriental rug washing studio. This assures that your Oriental and area rugs are both thoroughly and safely cleaned. Be sure to ask about pickup and delivery service. Restrictions apply. One last thing. We would like to invite all of our customers to join us in assisting the victims of the recent wildfires in the Gatlinburg area. During January, we will be donating a portion of our sales to Dolly Parton’s “My People Fund” to benefit the victims. Call Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning today, and give your family the gift of healthy, clean air in 2017 and to assist our neighbors in Gatlinburg.

January in the Garden BY LISA GRUGIN

H

ELLO 2017! Let’s

hope you’re less erratic than 2016. Let me just begin this article by telling you that some of your plants are probably not going to come back this year. Too many traumatic events have happened in the last 15 months. Last fall was mild, which means that we had a “soft hardening.” (We jumped right from summer to winter without a hardening off period in the fall.) That was followed by an early and wet spring, which was followed by extreme heat and drought, which was followed by another soft hardening. Then we topped it off with torrential rain! Some of your plants are traumatized. Some are dead. That doesn’t mean, however, that you should just sit on your bum in January and wait to see what happens. There are several things that you can do. » Monitor your plants. You aren’t going to know what made it and what didn’t until spring gets here, but you can keep an eye on

your plants so you aren’t blindsided when you have to replace half of them. Stressed plants also emit hormones into the air that attract insects and disease. If we have another mild winter, 2017 will be a banner year for infestations and sickness. Watch for these problems so you can treat them before they get established. » Henbit, chickweed, pop weed, and green onions aren’t stopped by cold weather. In fact, they count on you being cooped up in the house so they can take over the world! Get a little exercise and therapy by digging up those suckers. A pre-emergent, such as Preen, will help stop more weed seeds from germinating if applied on a regular basis. » Houseplants may need some attention this month. If your houseplants are unhappy, try a sunnier spot and a humidifier. If you don’t have a sunny spot, put them under a fluorescent lamp. If you don’t have a humidifier, try setting the pot in

a tray of water that has pebbles to keep the pot elevated. (You are trying to give them humidity, not drown them.) If your plants are covered in dust (or pet hair, like in my house), wipe them off (a Swiffer does a good job) or rinse them in the sink or shower to clean out their pores. They may also be drinking less this time of year, so adjust your water schedule. And unless a plant is climbing out of its pot, wait another month or two to transplant it. » This is a good time of year for dreaming. On wet and nasty days, look through magazines and seed catalogs and start planning the things you want to do in your yard. Please be aware, however, that some of those lovely photos were taken in other parts of the country. You may have to adapt those ideas to make them work here. Stop by with photos if you need some help. » Give your tools a good cleaning, oiling, and sharpening. This will get you ready for action when planting and pruning time arrives. » Seeds can be started indoors for annuals, perennials, and herbs. You need a sunny window, or you will need to supplement with artificial light. Fluorescent bulbs (including CFLs) work nicely and should be placed 1-2” from plants for best results. There is also a very wide selection of indoor greenhouses online for those who want to have a broader selection of plants. You can thank the pot growing industry for that! » If you have lots of leaves in your yard, get heavy layers off your lawn or shred them with your lawnmower and use them as mulch. Leaf compost is a great source of nutrients. » If you’re not using your leaves as mulch, what is your mulch situation? If you have naked soil, it’s a good idea to apply more. Mulch protects your plants and keeps soil temperature and moisture levels stable. Three inches is all the plants need, however! More is unnecessary and may cause crown rot of perennials or side root growth on trees. » Some of you have already been bitten by the pruning bug. Some of you should really never have a set of pruners in your hand. Yes, late January is a great time to prune summer flowering shrubs, but don’t go crazy! Call or stop by if you have questions. » Don’t forget the birds. Natural food supplies will soon run low, so keep feeders and baths clean and full. Never allow mold to grow in your bird feeder, because it’s toxic to the birds. That’s all for this month. Keep warm, and we hope to see you soon. Happy New Year!

DWEEZIL ZAPPA: 50 YEARS OF FRANK

JANUARY 17 AT 8 PM • BIJOU THEATRE

D

WEEZIL ZAPPA was born on September 5, 1969, in Los Angeles and is the son of Frank and Gail Zappa. It was inevitable that from the moment of his birth, his life would be filled wall-to-wall with music (his father having listed his religion as “musician” on Dweezil’s birth certificate). Dweezil’s early years were spent largely away from the spotlight, something of a rarity for the child of a celebrity but perfect for cultivating a close relationship with his family. Having primarily heard the music his father was working on or listening to at home while growing up, Dweezil soon found himself exposed to some new sounds on the radio. Besides his father’s music, he began listening to the Beatles, Queen, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, The Who, and Jimi Hendrix. Like many aspiring guitarists of his generation, Dweezil’s ear was caught in a stranglehold by the trailblazing guitar styles of Edward Van Halen and Randy Rhoads. UT Gardens Plant of the Month: Edgeworthia B Y A N DY P U LT E , U T D E PA R T M E N T O F P L A N T S C I E N C E S

I

FIRST

W R O T E about Edgeworthia, or paperbush, as a plant of the month five years ago. I wrote about it then, because it was one of my absolute favorite plants, and today it continues to be towards the top of the list of plants I love. I feel as if I’ve learned more about growing this plant in Tennessee since that first article and believe it’s worth sharing. This may not be the perfect month to talk about Edgeworthia – its leaves have already turned buttery yellow, fallen, and are now showing bare stems. However, the stage is being set for a wonderful transition, and the opening act starts now. Those bare stems are now developing tightly packed tubular flower buds. As the new year develops, buds will become sweet-smelling candelabras of beautiful yellow flowers. In its native China, you would find Edgeworthia clinging to stream banks and hovering on the edge of woodlands. Here in the Mid South, partial shade or more shade is a must for the plant to be successful. It will find a happy home in areas with rich organic soils that don’t completely dry out. Edgeworthia quickly makes a multi-stemmed woody shrub when provided the right growing conditions. Final size of plants is hard to predict, with most I’ve seen in Tennessee hovering under six feet high and wide (often growing eight feet or more). Training a plant to a single stem also can be a nice effect. Those familiar with the closely related plant Daphne might recognize

some similar characteristics. When I was first introduced to this plant, I made the assumption that its common name, paperbush, was given to it because of its paper-thin leaves. However, the common name refers to paper products made from the woody bark and stem of the plant. In a 1920 edition of the Paper Trade Journal, Clarence Jay West lists reading suggestions for different paper-making materials. He lists several references from the late 1800s on Edgeworthia in places like Nepal, Japan, and China. He also states that Edgeworthia and Daphne are good choices for fine paper when strength is also required. In fact, Japanese bank notes are made in part of an Edgeworthia paper called misumata. For those interested in botanical nomenclature and taxonomy, you will run into unfortunate confusion with this plant. You will most often find Edgeworthia chrysantha in the trade; its leaves are of a good size and flowers are showy. You may also run into Edgeworthia papyrifera, which is sometimes used as a synonym for E. chrysantha or to refer to a plant with overall smaller

characteristics. (It is most likely a diploid form of E. chrysantha.) Additionally, in some specialty nurseries, you will find cultivars like ‘Rubra’ or ‘Red Dragon’ that produce reddishorange flowers. These red-flowering plants tend to have leaves that are slightly less attractive and do not demonstrate the vigor or ease of growth found in other E. chrysantha. Edgeworthia is truly a four-season plant. In the summer, the plant is covered in beautiful elongated five inch leaves that hold droplets of water on a finely pubescent surface. In fall, leaves drop to reveal a beautifully structured plant that develops sweet-smelling winter flowers. Edgeworthia is hardy for almost all in the state of Tennessee when it is sited properly. Spring planting seems to be the trick to getting it off to the right start. However, this plant is by no means perfect – cold or desiccation can knock-out flowers just at the height of anticipation. Two cultivars of note are ‘Snow Cream’, which is known for having bigger flowers, and ‘Nanjing Gold’, which is reported to have a more pronounced golden color in the flowers. Edgeworthia specimens can be found in the UT Gardens in Knoxville and Jackson. In Knoxville, it’s located in the bottom garden near Neyland Drive. In Jackson, look for it on the north side of the main building near the gazebo. The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit www.utgardens.tennessee.edu. Photo by A. Pulte, courtesy UTIA

HILE HOMEOWNERS across

the country are increasingly creating popular outdoor “rooms” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently installed grills, refrigerators, work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially made to be weather-proof, flying and biting insects often prevent homeowners from fully enjoying their new outdoor living spaces. Retractable screens provide the perfect answer to these problems. By combining indoor and outdoor spaces, these innovative screen solutions enhance and promote your outdoor living experience. They provide shade, allowing people to extend the time that they, family, and friends spend on patios while keeping annoying, biting insects at bay. Large, motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of a building, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. And the best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish your views or your home’s esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many of the available retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. These retractable screens are available in a variety of custom colors and wood grain finishes that help blend your screens with your home’s interior or exterior color schemes. The screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and can be connected to your home’s general building automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection is needed. of Everything Knoxville, I am excited to introduce our new “Discover” series of designinspired feature articles that we hope will inspire you. In this and future issues, we will explore new and exciting interior design topics. In this issue, we will attempt to answer many of the questions asked by homeowners to design professionals related to window coverings. What is meant by the term “window coverings?” Window coverings created by design professionals are custom made blinds, shades, shutters, draperies, sheers, cornices, valances, or any fabric treatment used on and/or surrounding a window that provides not only aesthetic beauty to any room in your home, but also offers other features, including privacy, UV protection, and energy savings. What do you mean by “custom made?” Every aspect of the window and the area around it is considered when designing a custom-made window covering. We consider what is above the window: Are there any obstructions? What is the design style of the room? Do you want more light in the room or less? Also, other aspects such as size, how your

windows open/close, and if they’re framed or unframed are considered. We combine all of these factors, analyze them, and select the correct fabric weight, style, and color to create the perfect custom window treatment for your home’s windows. Your custom designed window treatment then goes to our professional workroom where it is hand-crafted by experts. Then we professionally install and dress your window. How do I know which covering is right for my windows? Our design professional will visit your home to measure, ask if there are any energy related issues, and talk to you about the many other important elements to consider when designing a custom-made window covering. These are important first steps prior to offering our recommendations. What if I have a beautiful view that I don’t want obstructed? That’s not a problem. If you enjoy beautiful views, rest assured they will remain! Our years of experience in homes just like yours enables us to recommend the perfect widow covering to both protect and enhance your views. We offer the right products and the expertise

New Year: New Clean BY CHRISTINA FITZWILLIAM

T

HE HOLIDAY SEASON has

wreaked havoc on my home. After all the holiday cooking, the parties, and a full-time toddler on the loose, just looking at the mess around me was enough to send me back under the blankets with my eyes shut tight denying the reality of the disaster at hand. But, since hiding wasn’t really an option, I eventually faced the “ultrafun” monstrous task at hand and plunged into getting my home back under control. After saying goodbye to our Christmas decorations, reorganizing each room, and wiping most every surface, it was time to tackle the floors. A short time later, my tile and grout and carpets were good as new, and all traces of the party and the season had disappeared. All I needed was to wipe the tile and grout with hot water and to simply vacuum the carpets. The credit for this easy clean-up goes to my husband, John. Two years ago John

applied a special sealer to our hard surfaces and Teflon guard on our carpets. Because he had been proactive in protecting our floors, it was easy to bring all our surfaces back to perfection with minimal effort. Perhaps this holiday season was particularly brutal to your home as well, and you need to call in some professionals. If it’s been a while since your carpets were cleaned, or if they experienced some abuse this season, you will want to address the problem before it gets out of hand. After an intensive deepdown sanitizing clean, which ensures the entire carpet structure is clean and sanitized, you may opt to apply a Teflon guard. This additional step acts as a layer of protection to the carpet fiber to reduce wear, as well as to repel soil. But what about your home’s tile and grout? This is where Surface Doc really shines. Using state-of-the-art equipment,

countertops

tile & grout

Surface Doc uses a perfect combination of pressure, heat, and extraction to remove all foreign contaminants from floors, leaving them deep-down clean and sanitized. Homeowners are then offered the option to seal, which further protects the integrity of the floor and makes maintenance a breeze. We are so impressed with our sealer, and know that you will be as well, that we guarantee it. This year make a New Year’s resolution that you can keep. With our help, keeping your surfaces clean this year has never been easier. Get your home in tip-top shape for the New Year and call John at Surface Doc today at 865-567-1986 or visit www. New Year’s Resolution

J

ANUARY IS THE PERFECT

time to finally commit to getting more organized. In fact, since getting organized is one of the most common New Year’s resolutions, January is National Get Organized Month. Research shows that people waste as much as 50 minutes a day – almost eight days a year – looking for things they own but can’t find. So it pays to be organized, because lost time is one commodity we can’t get back. If getting organized feels a bit overwhelming, here are some tips on getting started: » Be Realistic Trying to organize your house in a week is enthusiastic but probably unrealistic. Start with one space that’s an organizational priority. » Clear the Clutter In each room, remove items no longer needed. Place them in piles for donating, recycling, or tossing away. Then make a list of organizational items you need, such as additional shelving or cabinets in the laundry or children’s rooms. » Clear Garage and Front Door Entry If you always enter and exit through disorder, you’ll carry that clutter – emotionally and physically – into the rest of your house and out into the world. Having a clean entryway and garage flows into the rest of your home and life.

5

Tips to Get Organized and Enjoy Life More

Built-in mudrooms help minimize family clutter by keeping everyday items in one place

» Organize Your Closet Donate or toss anything not worn in the past year. Organize clothes by style, color, and season so you can see everything at a glance. Add shelving so shoes can be easily seen. Install belt or scarf racks to end the search for disappearing accessories, and a slide-out valet rod helps

saves time by helping plan outfits in advance. If your closet is a wire system, consider investing in an affordable, custom-designed closet to maximize available space. A customdesigned closet adds 30% more storage space than wire shelving or do-it-yourself kits. » Stay Organized An organized home reduces stress by decluttering your mind so you can focus on the important things in life. Keep everything in order by spending just 15 minutes a day de-cluttering. From the closet to the garage, Tailored Living can help organize every room in the house. Using 3D design software, Tailored Living’s organization specialists listen to your needs, create a computer model of your new organization system, and provide a quote – all in one free visit. With Tailored Living helping you save time by getting more organized, this is one New Year’s resolution you can keep!

MERICAN COUNTRY music singersongwriter, Sara Evans, made the hit albums Real Fine Place and Stronger. Her song “Born to Fly” won a 2001 Country Music Award. After signing a contract with RCA, Evans released her first album, Three Chords and the Truth, in 1997. Her next effort, No Place that Far, had a more popular sound and was certified gold thanks in part to a chart-topping duet with Vince Gill. More hits followed, including “Suds in the Bucket,” “Saints and Angels,” and “Born to Fly.” Her 2003 platinum album, Restless, was followed by 2005’s Real Fine Place, which was number 1 and number 3 on the country and pop charts respectively, making it the best-selling album of her career. But for what you might ask? How about those dirty, watermarked windows in your home that you and your family have been trying to look out of for the last several months? But isn’t it too cold to wash windows? It is if you’re the one doing the washing, but not if you’re an experienced window washing professional who safely works out-of-doors nearly every day of the year. The fact is, because of colder temperatures, we spend more time in our homes during the winter months than at any other time of year, often resulting in cabin fever. And looking out of those dirty and watermarked windows won’t likely improve your disposition. So here’s the perfect solution. Right now Fish Window Cleaning, a local, family owned company, is offering a 40% discount on window cleaning for residential customers for a limited time. Why not put the ladder, bucket, and paper towels away and take advantage of this incredible offer from Fish Window Cleaning? Just imagine what you can do with the savings. While you have a uniformed, trained, professional Fish Window Cleaning associate at your home, what else can they do for you? What about cleaning those gutters that are still full of leaves? Their gutter cleaning service consists of scooping, bagging, and disposing of the leaves, twigs, and other debris that are blocking your gutter channels that can result in both interior and exterior damage to your home.

Other services provided by Fish Window Cleaning include: » Pressure washing » Awning cleaning » Ceiling fan cleaning » Chandelier cleaning » Interior & exterior light fixture cleaning » Mirror cleaning » Screen cleaning » Window paint removal » Graffiti removal » Construction cleanup So clean up on the 40% savings on window cleaning today by calling Fish Window Cleaning, and discover a new view on life!

Happy New Year from Shae Design Studio

O

NE OF THE BIGGEST jobs

for an interior designer is making sure that the design elements you suggest to your clients are timeless and trendy, memorable and vibrant, and clean but sophisticated. Sound a little confusing? It is always a challenge to find the perfect balance of all of those things. What are the most important elements of design that you should look for this year? Simplicity with Edge Homeowners across the nation are in love with neutrals. During the past few years, we

have seen popularity juggle between whites and grays. One quick way to start creating your timeless palette is beginning with either one of these colors. Whether you are purchasing a linen sofa or renovating your kitchen with white or gray cabinetry, starting with a neutral and layering on top of it is not only timeless but also trendy. Pops of Color Color worked its way into 2016 and will have permanence in 2017. Homeowners and renovators were a little burned by blue and pink carpet from those 80s homes we once loved but have taken the blinders off and accepted that a little bit of color goes a long way. Our featured kitchen this month hosts a navy island. Similar to that pair of blue jeans that will never go out of style, navy is a fantastic color to use in your home that will give you sophistication with vibrance. Semi-Open Floor Plan As the presence of technology in our

homes increases, so does the popularity of the semi-open floor plan. If you are building a home or renovating, keep areas of escape in mind. Plan for a reading nook, where you can unplug and snuggle up or scroll through a feed in peace. Oversized knit blankets, poufs, and daybeds adorn this space and are the new featured room for every home. Call Shae Designs Studio today at 865313-2656 to set up an appointment with one of our amazing designers.

INTER IN TOWNSEND

may look sleepy to the untrained eye, but the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center is changing that perception. In conjunction with the Cades Cove Preservation Association, the Heritage Center is hosting the 9th Annual Winter Heritage Festival January 27-29. In this free to the public event, presenters will take you on a journey back a hundred years or more and show what life was like for the families of Cades Cove before it became a national park. Experts in their respective fields will cover the stories that make East Tennessee so special and unique. From hiking and conservation of the natural resources to the everyday struggles of pioneer life, the grace and charm of the area will come to life. Local historians, such as Sam Venable, will share the stories gathered over a lifetime of traveling across the East Tennessee/Appalachian region. This is a truly special event for anyone who calls this region home. All of these presentations will be held in the auditorium of the beautiful Great Smoky Mountain Heritage Center, located at 123 Cromwell Drive in Townsend. Presentations will begin each day at 10 am and will cover a range of topics related to the heritage of our area. Along with the presentations, you will also receive free admission to the museum, which allows visitors to trace the history of Tuckaleechee Cove, beginning with those Native Americans from 5,000 years back through the Pre-Cherokee and Cherokee eras 58

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE Januar y 2017

and the Euro-American period. Tools, ceremonial masks, housing, cooking utensils, plants, furniture, medicine, and more are featured, along with interactive videos on such topics as Cherokee games and pottery making. Outside the Heritage Center are 12 historic outbuildings; all but two are authentic structures from Blount and surrounding counties that were carefully taken down and re-constructed on the center’s six acres. The Winter Heritage Festival strives to continue the tradition of oral storytelling to share the history of Cades Cove. You can learn what it took to survive harsh winters without everyday conveniences and with only your family and neighbors to lend assistance. Discover what the word neighbor really means and what a high honor that word implies. Find out the detailed histories of the teachers that taught in the Cove. Learn what volunteering inside the park for more than 47 years has taught Robin Goddard and what it means for future generations. In an effort to help support the community, the Blount County Fire Department will be offering meals on Saturday and Sunday with proceeds going to the “Coats for our Community” effort, which supplies coats to deserving community members. Finally, on Sunday morning, join us for an old-time country church service,

including gospel singing and preaching. The Cades Cove Preservation Association and the Great Smoky Mountain Heritage Center welcome you to immerse yourself in the history of our mountains. For more information on the Winter Heritage Festival, call 865-448-0044 or visit www.GSMHeritageCenter.org. The Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center is 3/4 of a mile east of the traffic light at the intersection of Highway 321 and Intersection 73 towards the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Townsend. While in Townsend, please check out other activities the town has to offer as part of the Smoky Mountain Snowdown: A Winter Festival. A complete list of Snowdown events is available at www. TownsendSnowdown.com.

The East Tennessee Preservation Alliance works to preserve the structures and places with historic or cultural significance in Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Hamblen, Jefferson, Knox, Loudon, Monroe, Morgan, Roane, Scott, Sevier, and Union counties. ETPA partners with Knox Heritage to serve as the regional arm for preservation activities in these 16 counties.

East Tennessee Chinese New Year Festival

T

H E L A R G E S T celebration

of its kind in the region, the East Tennessee Chinese New Year Festival is an exciting way to celebrate the coming of spring! During the past decade, this annual variety show has featured dancing, singing, music, martial arts, drama, poetry, and some surprises from local performers and professional guests. The festival brings together many local Asian organizations and typically more than 100 performers to give the local community a sense of what it is like to spend Chinese New Years at a grand gala event in China! The celebration of the new year in the Chinese calendar coincides with the new moon in late January to early February. In 2017, our festival will be held on Sunday, February 5, from 3:30 to 5:30 pm in the beautiful Cox Auditorium in the Alumni Memorial Building on the campus of the University of Tennessee. Each year the festival has a professional performer or group that headlines the show. Our recent professionals have included contortionists, jugglers, singers, musicians, and

dancers. Last year Professor Linghui Tu of the National Academy of Chinese Theater Arts and the Confucius Institute of Chinese Opera in Binghamton University was our special guest. She performed five masterful Chinese cultural performances in singing, dancing, and instrumental music for our packed audience. This year our special guest will be singer, musician, model, and actress Jennifer Zhang. Jennifer had previously won the CCTV Star of Talent Competition in her native Shanghai and was the 2015 Miss Friendship Ambassador of her new home city of Chicago, representing the Windy City in the 2015 Miss Chinese International Pageant in Hong Kong. Jennifer will dazzle our audience with her vocal and instrumental skills and will help us welcome the “Year of the Rooster” in grand style. The festival is co-hosted by the Confucius Institute (CI) of the University of Tennessee and the UTK Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA). Festival producer, Michael Smith, heads an organizing committee that selects acts and arranges volunteers for decorations, handling stage

props, lighting, sound, advertising, guest relations, a full-color commemorative brochure, and more. “The East Tennessee Chinese New Year Festival is the most attended Chinese cultural event in East Tennessee,” said ShihLung Shaw, Director of the CI and UTK Professor of Geography. “It offers a great opportunity for the local community to get together to experience Chinese culture and celebrate the Chinese New Year.” One example of last year’s acts featured young students from the Knoxville-based East Tennessee Chinese School performing a Chinese fable that helping a single person may not necessarily change the entire world, but it may change the world for that person. The performers then beckoned the audience to start their new year by helping others. For information on tickets (all-reserved seating), sponsorships, and volunteering, visit www.knoxvillechineseculture. org. With $200 cash in door prizes, this fast-paced cultural variety show is a familyfriendly community event that should not be missed!

does not result from merely being in business. Not a spectator sport, success in small business requires that you be on the playing field, actively engaged in providing a quality product or service and differentiating your business from those that you compete with. Small business ownership isn’t for the timid as the last decade has proven. And we must all remain vigilant to not allow ourselves to become so pessimistic about the future that we miss what might become a huge growth opportunity. Although I have spoken about this very subject many times in the past, I feel that it deserves to be repeated once again. Anecdotal evidence is suggesting that a growing number of small business owners are experiencing recent new sales increases beyond their earlier expectations. I’m not offering any political commentary, so whether this renewed economic optimism is the result of the recent election or not,

But to benefit from this renewed economic optimism, it’s imperative that you act. It’s understandable that entrepreneurs are noticeably cautious after experiencing nearly a decade of anemic economic growth; however, you will have no other choice but to play in the game if you are to win the game. of West High School, Ashley Jessie knows the value of technology in the classroom. That’s why she’s working hard to help put a Chromebook in the hands of every West student. All seniors at West already have their Chromebooks, but by this month, all students will have one, making West a “one-to-one” school. “The one-to-one initiative is an incredible opportunity for students to start becoming more independent learners, focusing on student awareness of mastery of content,” said Jessie. “Through the laptops, students will be involved in more personalized learning environments where teachers become facilitators and students become more a part of the learning process.” This is Jessie’s first year as principal of West High. Previously she was assistant principal and then principal of Holston Middle School, and she was a language arts and math teacher before moving into administration. “I am always striving to be better today than I was the day before,” she said. “I believe in purpose and that we all have a purpose. strongly believe that at this time, my purpose is to be at West High School.” Jessie earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Carson Newman College, then went on to earn a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Tusculum College. She also holds an educational specialist’s degree in administration and supervision from Lincoln Memorial University. “I believe teaching is the greatest profession,” said Jessie. “There is no other profession that has such an impact on people than teaching. A teacher provides the structure, encouragement, direction, knowledge, and wisdom for the next presidents of the United States, engineers, accountants, teachers, doctors, professors, etc. One could not be what they are without a teacher.” The one-to-one initiative is a popular trend in K12 education. Success requires action. Do you have a deliberate and comprehensive plan for your small business for 2017? Flying by the seat of your pants or rolling the dice will not likely produce the results you have been hoping for. One year from now, a small number of success-oriented entrepreneurs will be reflecting back on 2017 and viewing it as their breakout year. This success will not be the result of luck, but rather action. How you will view your small business success for 2017 just one year from today? Will you get down onto the playing field where success awaits you, or will you choose the comfort of the grandstands?

I typically have meetings with parents and students to determine needs and strategies for all students to be successful. I like to observe classrooms and watch the learning take place. I spend time looking at data and determining strengths and things that need to be strengthened to make West better today than the day before. West has many activities, athletics, and clubs that I like to attend and be apart of throughout the evenings. “I am excited and thrilled to be in a community where education is valued and appreciated,” she continued. “I am thankful for a community that supports teachers and students to be the best they possibly can. I challenge us all to be better today than we were yesterday, and even though I don’t expect perfection, I do expect progress.”

Cre- FINANCIAL PLANNER™ ating a budget is easier than you might have imagined. If you have a smartphone, great free apps are available that can help you track your expenses, such as Mint.com. Once you have an overview of your expenditures, you can determine where you might be able to eliminate wasteful spending. On the savings side of the equation, everyone should allocate at least $2,000 to $3,000 to what I refer to as a basic savings or reserve. Also, be certain to take full advantage of your company’s 401(k) plan. Most 401(k) plans provide Safe Harbor Rules. These rules state that if you allocate 5% to your 401(k) plan, you may qualify for a 4% (or other agreed upon percentage) contribution from your employer. Don’t leave any free money on the table. Make the elimination of credit card debt a high priority. Credit card interest can significantly erode your family’s monthly income. Finally, establish an emergency fund to provide for a three to six month cushion to protect you from the unexpected. Holidays can be a huge strain financially for many people, resulting in large amounts of accumulated credit card debt that often gets carried over from year to year. Consider starting a Christmas savings account. Many credit unions and small community banks offer Christmas saving accounts where they automatically deduct a predetermined amount of money every month from your checking account or payroll. Because you can’t touch your savings until November, it’s protected. Research also shows that you can save as much as 30% on groceries by having a pre-planned weekly menu. It makes shopping easier, saves time, and reduces stress. Planning might also help you keep another New Year’s resolution: Dropping those extra pounds you accumulated from all those holiday parties. Making a commitment to put your financial house in order for 2017 will not only provide for a more secure future, but it will also help reduce the financial anxiety so many of us experience in our lives. Preparing Your Only Child for a New Baby B Y W E N DY FAU L K N E R

B

RINGING A NEW BABY

into your home is a major life event. For an only child who’s used to being the center of the household, a new baby can create feelings of jealousy and insecurity. There are many things you can do to help your child feel they are part of the pregnancy and impending arrival. Doing these things can cut down on feelings of displacement an only child may feel when a new baby arrives, and it can also facilitate sibling bonding. Parental Bonding Your pregnancy is the time when the relationship with your partner and your child should be cultivated. You want your older child to be excited and satisfied spending time, being held, and playing with your partner. If the child is suddenly handed off to your partner after the baby arrives, they will feel a disconnection between you and them. This can result in bad feelings toward you, your partner, and the new baby.

Involve Your Child Calling the baby “our baby” during your pregnancy can go a long way in helping your child feel emotionally connected to the baby. They will see the baby as belonging to the entire family, not just mom. Besides your speech, involve your child in as many things as possible during your pregnancy. Conquer the Milestones Your pregnancy is the ideal time to get those milestones out of the way that your child is ready to conquer. Weaning, potty training, going to pre-school, and other changes such as a room change, routine visits to grandma’s, and more should be established well before the new baby arrives. Getting the changes out of the way during your pregnancy will help establish these things as normal and part of your child’s routine. Hospital Visits Request that your child come in to your hospital room to see you as soon as you’re able to have guests. It’s best if your child knows that they’re the first person who gets to see mommy after the baby is born. When your

child arrives in your room, greet them as if you haven’t seen them in a long, long time. If they’re old enough, you can let them hold the new baby. A bonding expert reports that a baby’s head gives off pheromones. When inhaled, people fall in love with the baby, and a feeling of protectiveness toward the baby develops. Let your child hold the baby if they want, as it can go far in developing the love your child has for their new sibling. Special Time with Older Child You should set aside special time each day to spend with your older child once the baby arrives. Even 15 minutes to an hour of your undivided attention can go far in allaying their insecurities and fears. While it’s good to emphasize to your child that they’ll be the older sibling, go out of your way to tell and show them that they’re still your baby, too. Family Meetings: They Make All the Difference

H

APPY NEW YEAR! Life

just keeps moving, and it never slows down. I hope you had a wonderful holiday season and are looking forward to a new year. Parents, may I introduce you to the value in family meetings in raising ladies and gentlemen. Having a family meeting once per week can literally cut down on so much wasted time, help the family be more united, give the family specific goals, and create much needed family fun time. Let me explain. A family meeting should have an agenda and should be led by mom or dad to help everyone stay on track. A family meeting is not a time for mom and dad to bark out orders, complain about everyone’s previous week’s mishaps, or become a laundry list of “to dos.” Instead, it should be a time where each family member feels like their voice is heard, their opinions matter, and they are an essential part of the family unit. 66

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE Januar y 2017

Here are some possible ideas for your family meeting agenda: » Schedule for the upcoming week, including doctor’s appointments, ball games, special occasions, birthdays, and any events that the whole family needs to be aware of. This helps ensure everyone is on the same page, rides are coordinated, and special occasions don’t get forgotten. » Ideas for family fun times. Every family should have “fun time” put on their schedule every single week. Just like us adults usually have things each week that we’re looking forward to, our children need this, too. Family fun doesn’t have to cost money. It can be a movie at home, playground time, library time, hiden-go-seek in the dark time… it just needs to be on the schedule, so everyone can look forward to it and mom and dad don’t forget about it. » Projects. Family meetings really help accomplish projects, because it helps everyone prepare physically and emotionally for

them. If everyone knows that they’re going to clean out the garage on Saturday, mom and dad can make sure they have all the needed supplies, and the kids can “gear up” emotionally for the fun. » One-on-one time with children. Children feel so important when they see their names on the calendar for special time with mom and dad. Parents, we are trying to raise engaging, responsible, productive, and capable children. Help them learn these skills by involving them in running the family. A family meeting is a great way to teach our children organizational skills that will benefit them for years to come both personally and professionally.

New Year, New You! T

HAT TIME OF YEAR is upon us again. New year,

same resolution, same results. Don’t be left frustrated in 2017. Discover SculpSure, the first FDA cleared, noninvasive laser lipolysis treatment for the permanent reduction in unwanted fat in just 25 minutes. What is SculpSure? SculpSure is a state-of-the-art solution that relies on controlled laser technology. According to information from studies performed by the manufacturer, Cynosure, one 25-minute SculpSure treatment can reduce fat in target areas by up to 24%. For patients, this means SculpSure offers a quick, easy, almostpainless solution to a lifetime of insecurities. The innovative technology behind SculpSure is based on heating targeted fat cells to the point of permanent destruction. The body’s immune system then takes over and removes the damaged cells. During the ensuing 6 to 12 weeks, the treated areas will shrink to their new shape. For patients, this means a quick and simple end to stubborn fat. Southeastern Dermatology is the first dermatology office in Tennessee to offer this revolutionary treatment.

Why Choose SculpSure? While there are several other non-invasive fat removal devices on the market, SculpSure sets itself apart from the others in several important aspects: » SculpSure is very efficient. Each SculpSure treatment lasts 25 minutes from start to finish. The short treatment time means that a patient could literally come in for a treatment during their lunch hour and return to work without any disruption in their schedule. » SculpSure offers the advantage of being a relatively painless procedure. Most patients feel a tingling sensation intermittently throughout the treatment, which is generally well-tolerated. » Fat cells treated with the SculpSure laser are heated to 42 to 47 degrees Celsius or 107 to 116 degrees Fahrenheit – just a little warmer than a hot shower. These temperatures do not damage the skin and can be used on virtually any skin type. » SculpSure is highly customizable, and just about any area of the body can be treated. » Studies suggest that SculpSure has a 90% patient satisfaction rate, and its RealSelf.com rating is 79% at the time of this writing. As a board-certified dermatologist with more than a decade of experience in Knoxville, I can help you develop a body sculpting treatment plan to help you feel confident in your own skin.
