uch is the story of husband and wife team, and successful entrepreneurs, Justin and Nina Morgan. Justin is CEO of Development & Design Concepts, LLC, a fully integrated land development, custom design, and construction firm that builds high-end custom homes and commercial buildings. Nina, a mom, Licensed Professional Counselor, IFBB Figure Professional, and doctoral candidate, recently launched two Planet Beach Automated Spa locations in Bearden and Turkey Creek, which are the first Planet Beach Automated Spa locations in Tennessee. In this issue, we’ll focus on Nina and Planet Beach Automated Spa, which has high tech, innovative, affordable services that are revolutionizing the spa industry. In our February issue, we will interview Justin and learn more about Development & Design Concepts, LLC. EK: First of all, tell our readers a little bit about Planet Beach and how it differs from traditional spas. Nina: At Planet Beach Knoxville, we currently offer 13 different spa services to service both men and women. We offer everything from massage, weight management, detox, anti-aging, skincare, stress-reduction, pain relief, sunless color, and even teeth whitening. We offer convenience and affordability. With my locations now in Knoxville, luxurious spa services are no longer unattainable. All of our services are between 15 to 30 minutes. You can be in and out in 20 minutes or you can spend a few hours with us; it’s your choice. We offer monthly memberships and session packages to suit everyone’s goals, lifestyle, schedule, and budget. Whether you are a student, career person, or stay-at-home mom or dad, Planet Beach is just what you have been looking for. We are even open seven days a week! EK: You have extensive backgrounds in competitive sports, fitness, modeling, and professional counseling. How does your professional training and career experience benefit your clients? Nina: I have always been passionate about fitness, health, wellness, and helping others. It’s all about the total package. We all want to look good on the outside, but we also want to feel good on the inside, too. We can’t focus on just one and lose sight of or neglect the other. Our self-esteem can be in direct correlation with our appearance. Self-care is so important – emotionally, physically, mentally, Photos by D. Roberts Photography

and spiritually. Our expert spa consultants are here to help our members and clients achieve their goals. Our services can help get you on the right track to a healthy lifestyle. EK: You describe Planet Beach as a onestop shop for total skincare and wellness. Can you elaborate? Nina: While similar services exist elsewhere, clients would have to visit numerous locations to be able to take advantage of all the services we offer under one roof. We have a full line of skincare for face and body to clear, maintain, and transform your skin. We also offer relaxation products like masks, spa socks, personal massagers, candles, and melts, as well as nutrition products like vitamins, protein, detox, anti-cellulite herbs, and PB Clean Energy. We carry sunless color products by PB Glow and Sunless Pro, and we have in-spa, home teeth whitening kits, touchup pens, plus much more. EK: Clients are often reluctant to commit to the high fees charged by spas or to sign long-term contracts. How is Planet Beach different? Nina: We offer all different types of memberships, which start as low as $29 per month. We even offer month-to-month memberships and session packages. You can even freeze your membership. EK: You also offer an appointment-based, no wait commitment to your clients. Nina: Yes, our services are appointmentbased. This enables us to keep a client’s wait to a minimum. We will also accept call ahead and walk-ins. EK: Highlight for our readers two services that are popular with your clients. Nina: Our most popular service for weight loss is the Slim Capsule. You can lose anywhere from one to five pounds and burn 400-500 calories in just one 28-minute session! Slim Capsule combines heat, light, massage, and natural aromas for a truly powerful and unique multi-sensory experience. The capsule provides the perfect environment to complement any exercise, fitness, personal training, spa, or beauty regimen. Dry heat and radiant heat combine with LED light therapy to enhance your POD experience. Aromatherapy, vibratory massage, and cool facial air complete the pampering and relaxation. Slim Capsule provides the perfect heated environment, maintaining desired heat levels throughout the duration of each session for more

Identity Theft

LAST YEAR, as we were filing a client’s tax

return, we were notified by the IRS that a return had already been filed under that social security number. After doing some research, we found that identity thieves had swooped in early and filed a fraudulent tax return, claiming a large refund which had been direct deposited in their bank account. We then had to submit additional proof that our client was the rightful owner of the social security number before their return could be processed – a long and laborious process, as you can imagine. Unfortunately, that wasn’t an isolated instance – we had several clients walk in our doors who have experienced this unsettling fraud in the last few years. It seems that identity theft is all around us and becoming commonplace. The good news is that there are steps you can take on a daily basis to minimize your risk. Here are some quick tips: » Stay vigilant and know what is being reported on your credit: Order a free credit report from www.annualcreditreport.com and a free report of checking accounts opened in your name from www. consumerdebit.com. » Be alert for statements that don’t arrive on time – the mailing address may have changed. » Review not just your bank and credit card statements, but review your health insurance statement of benefits, too. Health insurance fraud is a booming business. » Mail your bills from the post office rather than leaving them in your mailbox. » Shred credit card offers that come in the mail, or, better yet, request to stop receiving them at www. optoutprescreen.com. » Monitor your minor children’s credit report – a child’s social security number may be compromised for years before it is discovered. Learn more about ways to reduce the risk of identity theft, how to spot it, and what to do if it happens to you. Call today for a complimentary appointment, or join us on January 28th from 11:30 to 12:30 for our free Lunch ‘n Learn at Lakeside Tavern. Each guest will also receive a free FTC Guide “Taking Charge: What to Do If Your Identity is Stolen.”

Five New Year’s Resolutions Too Simple to Overlook IF YOU make New

Yea r ’s re solut ion s , you’re not alone. About h a l f of A mer ic a n s make special goals for each New Year, according to University of Scra nton resea rch . Unfortunately, you’re also not alone if you break them, as only 8% of people are successful in achieving their resolution. Why do so many people fail, and furthermore, what’s the secret to success? The start of a new year is not powerful enough to help you continue to make the best decisions. People need to define their “why” if they’re going to make a permanent change. If your reason for changing your life is for your mental and physical well-being, you understand your “why.” But instead of selecting a huge resolution that will take months or years of dedication to achieve, why not focus on small things you can easily implement that will compound to have a dramatic effect? Start with one small change. You don’t have to wait for the right time, right date, right day, event, etc. Start now, and start small. Then work your way up with small, daily habits. Here are five, fail-safe goals that are surprisingly simple and will still have a big impact on your overall health and wellness.

1. Include lean protein with every single meal

Protein is an important part of balanced nutrition, but many people go without it, particularly for breakfast and lunch. Data suggests that 20-30 grams of protein daily helps you feel full and maintain muscle mass. While chicken, pork, and lean beef are protein-rich foods, meat isn’t the only option. For example, a half cup of beans contains as much protein as one ounce of broiled steak. Other meat-free protein sources include soy, yogurt, and eggs.

4. Take an omega-3 supplement

2. Make raw nuts your snack of choice

When hunger pangs strike, it’s too easy to head to the vending machine or reach for prepackaged sweets. To keep hunger at bay and give your body wholesome nutrients that truly satisfy, keep several jars of raw nuts nearby for snacking. Just one or two handfuls of raw nuts a day can help control your caloric inta ke! A lmonds, ca shews, hazelnuts, pecans – all are great options that will fill you up without the extra oil and salt, plus they keep your energy high.

Commit to taking one supplement in the New Year: omega-3s. People all across the world don’t get enough omega-3, and correcting this can drastically reduce the risk of disease and mortality. A Harvard study found up to 96,000 people in the United States die each year from insufficient omega-3 intake. Omega-3 fats impact every single cell in the body, and because they are essential fatty acids, they can’t be self-produced and must come from your diet. Select a pure omega-3 supplement which is produced without contaminants or impurities for superior quality.

10

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE Januar y 2015

3. Move more every day

You don’t need to join a gym or make a dramatic fitness goal – just resolve to move around more every day, particularly if you have a sedentary job. The average adult sits for 15 hours a day, not including sleeping! Take a walk during lunch, park in the back of the parking lot, or opt for the stairs over the elevator; it all adds up when done daily. If you find yourself forgetting, set an alarm on your phone or computer to go off every two hours as a reminder to take a 10-minute move-and-groove break.

5. Turn off electronics and tune into life

Your health and wellness go beyond what you eat and how much you exercise. Modern life is busy, and it’s easy to get distracted by email and mobile devices. Resolve to turn off your electronics at least once a day to focus on two things: yourself and your loved ones. It’s easy to lose sight of what’s really important, like friends, kids, your spouse, and even you. Take time every day to tune out of the electronic stimuli and focus on things you’re grateful for – perhaps quiet moments by yourself, belly laughs with your kids, or a tender hug from your partner.

Design Trends to Heighten Your Home’s Style in 2015 AS THE New Year kicks off, it’s the pre-

mier time to refresh and refocus on certain aspects of your life... and the home is no exception. Say goodbye to lackluster interiors as renowned interior designer and DIY television personality, Taniya Nayak, has forecasted the top trends for 2015 that will be sure to enhance and revive any home. Deep, rich hues Be bold with shadowy and opulent tones; there are many ways to infuse a rich color scheme into your space. “Don’t be intimidated by dark hues,” says Nayak. “Incorporate shades from the same color family throughout a room with a coordinating accent wall, rug, and decorative pieces, such as pillows and blankets. This creates a bold, yet harmonizing visual. “The concept of a ‘pop’ of color is blown up in 2015,” adds Nayak. “We’re seeing deep, rich hues adorning walls, lavishly upholstered furniture pieces, window treatments, and area rugs. This year we like to say ‘go bold or go home.’” Gallery walls Create a room that’s uniquely yours by making a gallery wall with items of your choice. Display an array of mirrors, framed family photos, sketches, or even postcards. The key is to be creative and be yourself! “2015 is all about you,” Nayak explains. “Hanging a variety of frames or objects in a well-thought out cluster on the wall provides the perfect place to showcase pieces that are important and meaningful. When people walk into your home, they’ll know exactly what you love.” Bold patterns in neutral colors Although neutrals provide a calm palette, it’s possible to infuse bold statements into these rooms, as well, with the use of patterns. Revitalize your room with a geometric rug in an earth tone, and also add window treatments with a daring floral design in a complementary, yet understated, color. When mixing prints, pair structured linear patterns with organic ones for a look that’s polished, and not too “matchy.” “This is a beautiful way to add drama and what appears to be ‘texture’ to a space,” says Nayak. 60s mod The retro panache of mid-century modern decor will perk up rooms with its soft, sculptural lines, woven upholstery, and 12

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE Januar y 2015

bright accessories in geometric shapes. Search for vintage furniture pieces like rounded chairs and button-cushion couches with short, tapered legs to add a sense of authenticity. “We are going retro mod – way back to the 60s, where design was about curvy forms, vibrant colors, and eccentric patterns,” says Nayak. “Be prepared to leave your design fears at the door and go full throttle with the bright and loud elements found in the mod movement.” Organic elements This year mount antlers above your mantel or create centerpieces with shells, metallic leaves, or branches for a rustic vibe. With these earthy components juxtaposed against woodsy furniture and ivory tones, you’ll create an impressive, outdoorsy aesthetic. “It’s easy to bring nature and organic

structures into your home,” says Nayak. “Leave linear styles out of the equation. Instead, think of free flowing shapes, colors found in nature, and the peaceful serenity associated with the outdoors. The goal is to evoke the same emotional responses throughout your home.” Copper “Each year we see a particular metal rise to the top of every designer’s list, and this year, it’s all about copper,” says Nayak. Copper is a captivating metallic that adds a modern edge to even the simplest scheme. Small pieces make a big statement, so subtly pepper in copper pieces to your décor, like light fixtures, planters, or table settings. Display copper cookware in your kitchen – it’s a great way to add a touch of glamour without being gaudy. 2015 is full of impressive design trends. Use Nayak’s expertise, and this year your home will serve as a canvas for self-expression, creativity, and style.

Davy Jones Looking Back:

F

OR A SHOW that only ran two

seasons in the 60s, The Monkees made a lasting impression on the hearts and minds of the baby boomer generation. Mickey Dolenz, Peter Tork, Michael Nesmith, and Davy Jones won the hearts of minds and America’s youth – especially the girls. The “imaginary band” sold more than 75 million records around the world, and posters of the band adorned the walls of kids the world over. In addition to promoting peace and love as their musical peers were doing, The Monkees also promoted a message of fun and lightheartedness – a message still needed today. Five years ago this month, I had the privilege of interviewing Davy Jones who, sadly, passed away from a heart attack three years ago next month. The chat was in support of a Dallas area appearance and, frankly, what I expected was a by-the-numbers interview where in this icon of the Broadway, TV, and concert stages would try hard to tolerate questions that he’s had to have heard a million times before. Jones started our conversation off by filling me in on a little historical background about The Monkees being followed by David Cassidy (with whom he was touring) and The Partridge Family after The Monkees’ show

14

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE Januar y 2015

was canceled. Davy said, speaking of David, “I had actually known his father, Jack Cassidy, back in New York, in the 60s, as well as Shirley Jones. I was on Broadway in Oliver. He was all part of that little click with Jack Cassidy and Shirley Jones. It was Judy Garland and Tony Newly, Dudley Moore, Joan Collins, Peggy Lee, and Buddy Rich. “Oh my goodness! It was like, Judy Garland was good friends with Georgia Brown. Georgia Brown was Nancy in Oliver. She put me under her wing like I was her little man. I was only 16 at the time. We always went to Judy’s apartment on Central Park West and they got into whatever they got into. I wanted to be JUST like them. By the time I was 17 years old, I was well into gin and tonics, you know? “I’m thinking, ‘This is it. I’m just like everyone else!’ It wasn’t until I saw Judy Garland go around the revolving door at the Russian Tea Room three times, trying to find her way out, that I realized, ‘I don’t think I want to be like that!’ “I sang with her at Carnegie Hall and that was cool. It was all about the time that I was on the Ed Sullivan Show in ’64 – the night the Beatles were on. I did a song from Oliver. That was when I first thought, ‘Ah! Music! It’s good, all these girls! I think I’ll have a piece of that fame, actually!’ That’s why I got into what I got into.” Sliding in a little humor, Jones humorously made light of the ages of his peers. “Cassidy sings, ‘I think I love me, what am so I afraid of?’ Tony Orlando sings, ‘Knock three

times on the ceiling if you hear me fall’. Peter Noone sings, ‘Mrs. Brown, you have a lovely walker’. Roberta Flack sings, ‘The first time I ever forgot your face’. And Willie Nelson’s, ‘On the Throne Again’. All this stuff is, like, ridiculous. Ringo Starr sings, ‘I get a little help from Depends'. It gets crazy. Paul Simon sings, ‘50 ways to lose your liver’, and Abba is singing ‘Denture Queen’. Davy closed by reflecting on his career and his current act. “The Monkees was such a successful idea. I don’t need to escape anything. I just need to include other things. I’ll sing some theater. I’ll sing a medley of Oliver songs. Or I’ll sing something from West Side Story. And I won’t feel uncomfortable or like I’m throwing it down people’s neck. I’m just adding to the schedule of the show and be entertaining. I talk. I talk about things that have happened to me and about things that will happen to me. I make it as tough as I can for the next act who comes into that theater. They better be good if they come after me, okay?” Davy Jones is definitely a tough act for anyone to follow. However, what isn’t tough to follow are the messages of love, peace, fun, and lightheartedness that he and his former band mates promoted and still promote today. Maybe we need to dust off one of their albums and put a song in our hearts to help lighten us up and to not take life quite so seriously. Perhaps we should take to heart that message that was in a verse in their theme song: “...we’re too busy singing to put anybody down...”

Mark, Set, Go! Oh No! DOGS MARKING in the house – oh

gross! Leg lifting is a natural, normal behavior for dogs, but not exclusively males. Of course, like some other natural dog behaviors, it’s totally unacceptable in our human world. Fortunately, most dogs learn early that humans don’t appreciate their efforts to tell the world “this house and family are mine, keep your paws off.” Indoor marking may also be a function of stress. Calm and relaxed dogs are less likely to mark indoors. Standard housetraining protocol, reducing the dog’s opportunity to mark by taking him outdoors persistently, reinforcing appropriate elimination outside with treats, and interjecting any leg lifts you see with an “Oops! Outside!” should work for easy cases. As much as 40% of dogs mark because of stress. Identify and remove the stressors. Vigorous off-leash aerobic outings can work wonders, as can force-free routines, which require dogs to think and tire mentally. Neutering is a good first step in stopping behavior, as intact males mark everything in response to the scent of a female in season somewhere in the area. Testosterone contributes to the motivation of the “this is

John and JeanAnn at Ms. C’s B&B will be happy to visit with you regarding dog behaviors. Also, don’t forget to set up your Winter Break boarding reservation today. mine” statement. Between 60 and 90% of male dogs will stop urine marking within weeks or months once neutered. Marking by females will usually stop with spaying. John and JeanAnn at Ms. C’s B&B will be happy to visit with you regarding dog behaviors. Also, don’t forget to set up your Winter Break boarding reservation today.

2015 will bring COLAs, changes, and something new

EACH YEAR, the retirement benefits landscape

looks a little different, and 2015 is no exception. The 401(k) contribution limit expands $500 to $18,000. The catch-up limit for participants age 50+ rose to $6,000. If you’re in the 25% tax bracket and put $18,000 in your 401(k), you’ll save $4,500 in 2015 federal income taxes. Tax savings applicable to a regular 401(k) only.1 IRA contribution limits will stay the same, but phase-out ranges changing. The contribution limit for Roth and traditional IRAs remains at $5,500, with an additional $1,000 catch-up contribution allowed for IRA owners 50+.2 Adjustments have been made to the phase-out ranges for the deduction of regular IRA contributions. If you own a traditional IRA and contribute to a 401(k), you can claim a tax deduction for your IRA contribution until your adjusted gross income (AGI) is between $61,000-71,000 (single) / $98,000118,000 (married filing jointly). If you own an IRA and don’t put money in an employer-sponsored plan but your spouse does, you can claim tax deduction on IRA contributions until your spouse’s AGI reaches the phase-out range of $183,000-193,000.3 The phase-out ranges regarding eligibility for Roth IRA contributions start $2,000 higher at AGIs of $116,000-131,000 (single) / $183,000-193,000 (married filing jointly).3 Social Security income will rise. A 1.7% COLA kicks in and the maximum monthly benefit at full retirement age (FRA) increases to $2,663. Social Security recipients younger than FRA at the end of 2015 will have $1 of benefits withheld for every $2 of income (AGI) they earn above $15,720. Medicare premiums and deductibles. Part A hospital stay deductible grows to $1,260. The standard monthly Part B premium will remain at $104.90; the Part B deductible will still be at $147. Part D premiums about 4% higher.4 More help for retirement savers. Eligibility limits for the saver’s credit are going up. Potentially new for 2015 is a myRa which is a Roth IRA federally-backed. “How To Get Rollover Ready for Retirement.” Free Educational Workshop on Tuesday, January 13th, at 5:30 pm at Rothchild’s. Recipes for Liver BY MICHELLE SAMPLES

Loving Your Liver

T

HE HUMAN liver gets

no love. It may be the most ignored organ in the body until it screams for your attention. The heart, lungs, kidneys, and bladder all get daily attention as their function noticeably affects our behavior and comfort. Even our pancreas gets noticed if our energy level drops. But the liver just works steadily with no fanfare, keeping your body and other organs relatively free from toxins and wastes. Closely associated with the liver, both in proximity and function, is the gall bladder. In traditional eastern medicine, these two organs are paired as opposites and are complementary. Certain foods tend to distress both organs, while other foods tend to help restore their function. It is well known that alcohol in excess damages the liver and can lead to cirrhosis. Yet oily, fatty food can also be destructive. High fat animal food can be clogging to the liver, especially if fried. Fried foods, especially deep fried, tend to clog the liver and inhibit its ability to function. Nuts and nut butters high in fat can also contribute to liver congestion. The quantity and quality of oil consumed can be pivotal. Sesame oil

is excellent for sautéing and stir-frying. In all cases, oil should never be allowed to smoke, as this is an indication that the structure of the oil is changing. Olive oil is well suited for salads and raw dishes but volume must be kept in check. Traditional eastern medicine identifies the sour taste with the liver and gall bladder, collectively known as wood, or tree energy. Just as citrus is used in dish detergent to cut grease from your cookware, sour tasting foods such as oranges, grapefruit, and sauerkraut can help cleanse the buildup of fats and oils in the liver. By keeping a check on the oily, fatty foods consumed, plus making sure to include sour tasting foods on a regular basis, your liver and gall bladder functions can be kept functioning smoothly. Lastly, fresh greens such as kale, collards, turnip greens, or even romaine lettuce are the absolute best things you can eat for your liver. They provide the nutrients for the most efficient buffering of toxins as they are filtered by the liver and safely discharged from the body. By adopting these suggestions, you may not notice the benefits to your liver today, but it may prevent you from experiencing considerable difficulty in the future.

Health Related Questions to Ask Yourself in the New Year

❏ 1. Do you believe you deserve high quality healthcare? ❏ 2. Do you want good quality healthcare but don’t have insurance? ❏ 3. Are you paying a high monthly premium for insurance and never using it? ❏ 4. Do you have to go to the ER when you get sick? ❏ 5. Do you dislike waiting in a waiting room for care? ❏ 6. Would you prefer to see the same doctor at each visit? ❏ 7. Would you rather be seen in the comfort of your own home or office? ❏ 8. Would you like to save money on your healthcare needs?

HAPPY NEW YEAR! It’s that time

of year when we all start thinking of New Year’s resolutions. It’s that time of year that we think of losing weight, stopping smoking, eating healthy, sleeping better, and generally getting our act together. At Essential Health Access, we would like to invite you to join us in an exciting new concept in healthcare. Essential Health Access is a medical practice that focuses on helping to prevent catastrophic medical events from happening to you and your loved ones in the future – events such as heart attacks and strokes. We want to help you lower risk factors by looking at yourself today with an eye on tomorrow. While many of us are focused on the health of our loved ones, it’s time to focus on our personal health. As a Certified Family Physician, I am offering my service to you in as many ways as possible to meet your current and future healthcare needs. I will be your life coach, and at the same time, I will be here to take care of your immediate healthcare needs as well. Together we will develop a one-on-one doctor-patient relationship so I know you and you know me. Our affordable membership fee provides you immediate access to acute care in your own home or office while also focusing on preventive healthcare

issues that can enhance both your longevity and quality of life. What are some of the things that prevent many us from living a healthy lifestyle? Often we lack the necessary motivation, we don’t have the time, or perhaps we think it’s too expensive. We all set priorities in our lives. If we’re sick, we seek care. If we don’t have insurance, we have to go to a walk-in clinic and wait in an office where everyone else is sick. If we can’t afford that, then we have to go to the emergency room. The walkin clinic, the family practice clinic, and the emergency room all have two things in common: They all cost money and require time. Just imagine… what if you could simply pick up your phone and receive the quality healthcare you deserve, all without leaving your home, office, or place of work? All of our members experience the same affordable, dependable, professional, compassionate, and personal care regardless of their income. We are not a replacement for a health insurance plan. Essential Health Access is an alternative for those who may not have insurance and may represent a less expensive form of healthcare for those who can afford insurance but would rather not pay the high monthly premiums. Essential Health Access offers its members affordable healthcare services, which, when combined

Timothy E. Bell, D.O. with the lower cost of premiums available with higher deductible health insurance plans, can actually save you money while resulting in a higher level of healthcare for you and your family. Consider all your options and then decide. Don’t you and your loved ones deserve the highest quality medical and preventative care without the high cost of monthly premiums? Our team here at Essential Heath Access is ready to provide you with the highest quality, compassionate, and caring healthcare without compromise. To a healthy New Year!

Four Simple Steps to a

Happier, Healthier 2015

ANOTHER YEAR is upon us, leaving

plenty of time to reflect on what went well (and not so well) in 2014. Before you start outlining your self-improvement plan for 2015, consider this: only 8% of people who make New Year’s resolutions actually stick to them. Control the urge to recycle annual resolutions that you know you’ll never keep. Instead, identify new opportunities to keep your body fresh and your mind focused. Here are four simple steps to a happier, healthier 2015. 1. Schedule a few “mental health days” We spend a lot of time at the office, and if you’re clocking more than 10 hours a

day, it’s likely too much. Scientists often link overtime to everything from depression to cardiovascular issues. It’s no secret that we all count down the days until that next holiday vacation or summer road trip. But why wait? Don’t put off precious time away from the daily grind. Instead, avoid burnout by planning a few long weekends every year that help you recharge and refocus. Whether you’re sleeping in and catching up on your DVR or connecting with old college roommates, a little R&R will do wonders for your morale. 2. Improve your indoor air quality Nine in 10 homeowners realize poor

indoor air quality can contribute to certain health issues, yet only one-quarter are worried about the air quality in their homes. With the majority of homeowners spending 90% of their time indoors, it’s important to identify telltale signs of unhealthy air before they trigger health issues. If you’re noticing foggy bathroom mirrors after showering or lingering food aromas after preparing meals, chances are your home isn’t properly ventilated. Protect your home and your family by updating your range hood or installing a new bath fan. 3. Clean out your closets If you’re like most, you’re probably hanging on to one too many items that you’ve outgrown or no longer use. Free up hangers and closet space by taking inventory of any items you haven’t worn in several months. Holding on to jeans in the hopes you’ll fit into them? Donate them to someone who can wear them now and treat yourself to a new pair. Stockpiling old bridesmaid dresses? Have them altered into the ideal cocktail dress. Hoarding fashion jewelry and accessories that are no longer in style? Create a dress-up box for nieces, young cousins or students. Not only will you make more space for things you do need, de-cluttering creates feelings of happiness and accomplishment. 4. Try something new If “learn to cook” and “lose 10 pounds” have been on your to-do list for years, it’s probably time to mix things up a bit. Be more specific when outlining goals. For example, instead of focusing on weight loss, why not focus on new classes to try out? From cardio kickboxing and spin class to ZUMBA and yoga, there are endless opportunities to get your heart rate (and your spirits) up. Check out your local gym, and pledge to try something new every quarter until something sticks. As for cooking, turn it into a date night with your spouse by enrolling in a cooking class together, or buy a cookbook and take turns selecting new meals to prepare. Keep in mind that you won’t do yourself any favors by shrugging off goals or not planning in advance. Set up reminders and calendar invites to help keep you on track. Better yet, outline at least one shared resolution and invite friends or family members to join in.

Inside the Crystal Ball: Mobile Predictions for 2015 MOBILE HAS certainly come a long

way to help connect people with loved ones, improve productivity, and simplify daily tasks – with simple swipes or taps, they can instantly locate the best restaurants in town or get directions from point A to point B among other game-changing benefits. But it doesn’t just end there. In 2015, significant developments in the mobile space will empower people to do even more with their devices. Intel executives predict these top five trends will emerge across mobility in the New Year. 1. LTE will take 2015 by storm. “People are used to associating LTE with their smartphones, but in 2015, LTE technology is going to connect more than just mobile devices,” says Hermann Eul, Intel’s corporate vice president of the mobile and communications group. “We’ll not only see LTE in 2 in 1s and laptops, but in other categories including fashion, wearables, home appliances, and medical devices. More cars will be connected on LTE. This will give a new meaning to the connected lifestyle and change the way people interact with their technology. More regions around the world will begin launching LTE to help people more quickly access data on their phones and increase cellular reliability.” According to the Global Mobile Suppliers Association, 331 operators have launched LTE networks and service in 112 countries, which is more than half of the world. 2. Focusing on 5G in 2015. “The clock is ticking on 5G deployment, and 2015 is the year 5G starts to get real, as the mobile and wireless industry moves from concepts to actual technology trials and standards development,” says Aicha Evans, Intel’s vice president of wireless platform research and development. “Designed with billions of connected Internet of Things devices in mind, 5G will be tasked with resolving a slew of new challenges like network congestion, spectrum availability, energy efficiency, cost, reliability, and more. Put simply, it’s no longer only about speed, but about intelligence and how people can connect with a high influx of devices and how devices can connect and compute with one another. We’ll 24

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE Januar y 2015

start to see 5G coming into focus in 2015.” 3. Emerging markets will dominate mobile. “Emerging markets will be a key driver for global smartphone growth in 2015,” says Rupal Shah, general manager of Intel China. “There is a lot of competition among original equipment manufacturers (OEMS) in the emerging markets. More importantly, this growth and competition will push innovations forward at lower price points with more interesting capabilities and features built into smartphones and tablets. We’re already seeing skyrocketing growth from Chinese smartphone manufacturers such as Xiaomi and Lenovo, and this trend is not slowing down anytime soon. People will be getting more value from their devices.” In fact, CCS saw that the average selling price of mobile phones declined for the first time in four years in 2014. Additionally, Strategy Analytics predicts there will be a 158% growth in tablets under $150 and only a 17% growth in tablets in the $150 - $249 price point in the next four years. 4. One size does not fit all. Consumers will see more choices when it comes to screen size, price point, and new tablet capabilities in 2015. Whether they are more comfortable with Windows or Android operating systems, there will

be a tablet for everyone with great performance. “One thing we’re seeing in the tablet market is how it is fulfilling more specific needs as more people have integrated tablets into their lives and adopted them so widely,” says Chris Walker, Intel’s general manager of tablets. “Now it is about more customized devices that address specific usage needs such as the Kurio tablet for kids or the tablet we developed with AARP for the ‘tech-shy’, as well as devices that can appeal to a wide variety of uses.” 5. Do and play differently with a new generation of tablets. As tablets evolve, innovation will drive new user experience and adoption in tablets. For example, the Dell Venue 8 7000 Series Tablet with Intel® RealSense™ snapshot has multiple cameras to capture photos with full depth information, enabling consumers to dynamically change the focus of their pictures after they have been taken with a single touch, among other exciting new usages. The Lenovo Yoga Tablet Pro 2 tablet comes in a very sleek design that has an enhanced kickstand or hangs on a hook, and it’s also the first of its kind with an integrated projector that can project a 50-inch viewing screen. “2014 has been a great year and 2015 is shaping up to be exciting as well,” says Walker. “We are pleased with the partnerships and products that have come out as a result of our efforts and there are some exciting, innovative features and tablets on the horizon.”

Meet the AAA Lady Tripsters MY PASSION for travel began in 1982

and ultimately, but perhaps not surprisingly, led to a 23 year career with AAA. In 1998, based largely on an idea that I got from my mother, I started the Lady Tripsters. My mother shares my passion for travel, but unfortunately my father’s career demands didn’t allow them to travel as a couple as often as my mother would have liked. As a result, I began talking to other ladies who were single or, in some instances, whose husbands were not always available to travel. So the Lady Tripsters was officially launched. I posted a message in the AAA magazine, and to my amazement, we received hun-

dreds of inquiries from other like-minded women who desired the companionship of other like-minded women, although we often have spouses and gentlemen friends that join the Lady Tripsters as well. We’ve visited England, Ireland, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Czech Republic, Hungary, Austria, and Greece. To take advantage of the lower winter rates, we often travel in March. This has proven helpful to many of our ladies who are on fixed incomes. And while it’s more about destination, we remain committed to discovering the very best travel values available. The Lady Tripsters’ future plans include an exciting trip to historic Morocco in

Travel

March 2015, as well as cruises to the Norwegian Fjords, South America, and China. If you’re a single lady or a wife whose husband doesn’t share her passion for travel, but you’ve been reluctant to travel, I encourage you to discover the possibilities that the Lady Tripsters offer. Join Karen Casey and me for our very special Tripsters/Solo Travelers event on Tuesday, January 20, at 6 pm at our West Knoxville location. We will be sharing with participants our 2015 lineup of upcoming tours and cruises, as well as listening to your suggestions for future travel ideas.

Happy New Year and Happy Savings! ANUARY is a great time to reas-

sess your winter wardrobe. There is finally time to go through all of the pieces hanging in your closet that haven’t been worn yet this year and either donate them or take them to your nearest consignment shop. Whichever you choose, you’ve begun the process of updating your own winter wardrobe while selections are still great and on sale! At The Lily Pad, our sales are huge semiannual events which take place in January and July. Our winter merchandise is now 25% off, and on Saturday, January 17th at 10:00 am, every piece that’s left goes to 50% off! We’ve found this method to be quite effective to not only clear out the store, but also to pass tremendous savings on to our customers. As the winter merchandise goes on sale, our “La Sale Boutique” (the big room in the rear of the store) goes to 70% off! Thus, the

clearing out begins as we ready ourselves and the store for a brand new season! Spring fashions have been ordered, new, fresh looks are arriving and the holiday decorations have been put away for another year. We’ll look forward to seeing so many of our

Fashion

customers and friends during our unbelievable sale days. If you’ve ever spent a day at Filene’s Basement in Boston, The Lily Pad is almost as wild on the first days of our sale! Plan to spend some time with us as you visit with friends and neighbors, every arm loaded with bargains and having the time of our lives! What a fun day during a not-so-fun month… it’s a social event you won’t want to miss! At The Lily Pad, we reflect on how blessed we have been this year to again be a part of your lives. recently? Be prepared for sticker shock. With the cost of new automobiles averaging more than $32,000 in 2014, an increase of 3% from 2013 prices, I’m often surprised that car owners don’t take far better care of their vehicles. While it’s true that today’s vehicles don’t require service as often as cars manufactured a decade or more ago, the cost of repairs tends to be higher than in the past due in large part to today’s highly technical and sophisticated engines, drive trains, and suspension systems. Notice that I used the term repairs. That’s because there are two different costs involved in maintaining your automobile. First, there are maintenance costs, and secondly, there are repair costs. Costs for routine maintenance help your vehicle operate at its peak performance levels, ensuring that it runs as efficiently and economically as possible. Following your manufacturer’s recommended service intervals also helps prevent the second cost of vehicle ownership, namely repairs. Repair costs can range from hundreds of dollars to many thousands, and, sadly, many repair costs could have been avoided if the car’s owner had just performed the required maintenance. So why don’t ca r ow ners fol low t hei r manufacturer’s suggested service intervals? Perhaps they lack the confidence they feel is needed in trusting a repair facility. I understand how they feel. In fact, that’s why my wife and I started Christian Brothers Automotive in Farragut. Christian Brothers Automotive represents not only the highest standards of quality and workmanship, but it also offers you the peace of mind you deserve with competitive pricing – all backed up by one of the best warranties in the industry: two years or 24,000 miles, whichever benefits you the most. If you would like to avoid unnecessary repair costs, if you would like to have people you can trust maintain your vehicle at regular intervals to ensure that it operates at its peak performance, and if you prefer straight, uncomplicated talk and not the technical jargon you’re used to, then I would like to invite you to experience the future of automotive maintenance and repair excellence at Christian Brothers Automotive. We’re your full-service automobile repair and maintenance headquarters.

cancer in the United States, and most people have no idea they may be exposed to radon, for you can’t see it, smell it, or taste it! January is National Radon Awareness Month, and the EPA and U.S. Surgeon General recommend that all homes be tested. What’s different about Dayton’s as compared to do-it-yourself tests is that Dayton’s technicians perform radon services in compliance with the radon gas industry’s recommended practices, PLUS they know how to remediate the problem, so you can get it all done by one provider! Rising to the surface through the path of least resistance, radon can be found in new or old homes, drafty or well-sealed homes, and homes with and without basements. The risk factor increases for homes resting on cracked foundations or other gaps in the ground. Excessive insulation in homes with poor ventilation can also trap radon gas. If high levels of radon are detected after an accurate testing with a Continuous Radon Monitor, Dayton’s will complete a FREE structural analysis and design survey with recommendations on what is needed to effectively pull the radon from within your home and expel it outside. Other services provided by Dayton’s include convenient quarterly perimeter pest control (rodents/spiders/ ants, etc.), carpenter bee control (Apr-Aug), mosquito treatment (May-Oct), bedbug elimination, VA/FHA termite inspections, fungicide/moldicide treatments, and CleanSpace® Crawl Space Encapsulation. New customers can receive $10 OFF a Continuous Monitor Test and $50 OFF Radon Mitigation if high levels of radon are detected (one coupon limit per household – expires 3/31/15). Getting Your Home’s Roof Ready for Winter YOUR HOME’S roof is its first line of

defense against the searing sun, rain, wind, hail, ice, and snow. It’s exposed to more potentially damaging elements than nearly any other area of your home’s exterior. For this reason, the best way to protect your home is to keep your roof in good, sound condition at all times. Make a point of visually inspecting your home’s roof periodically. If you observe something that’s questionable, it’s best to contact a licensed roofing contractor who can make a thorough evaluation of your roof. A trained professional will evaluate the following areas: ›› Roof structure ›› Existing roof materials ›› Roof flashings ›› Gutters ›› Vent pipes ›› Loose or rusting fasteners They will also check for leaks that may be occurring inside your attic to see if it is insulation related. This will save you money on your monthly utility bill.

The best time to take corrective action is at the first sign of a problem, before it becomes an even bigger problem that’s more expensive to repair and might damage your home’s interior. The best way to avoid future problems is to have your home roofed or re-roofed correctly the first time. Unfortunately, many problems homeowners experience are a direct result of poor materials and workmanship. Sadly, it’s not always easy to tell the difference between a roof that’s been installed properly and one that’s been installed poorly. The best way to avoid problems is to select an experienced and qualified, licensed, and insured roofing contractor. Request references and check them. Contact the Better Business Bureau as well. As owner of All Dry Roofing, I personally meet with every homeowner. I conduct a thorough evaluation of your home’s roof and make recommendations and discuss possible alternatives. At All Dry Roofing, every roof we install is not only backed up by a guarantee, but all work

is performed in a manner to ensure the roofing manufacturer ’s warranty isn’t voided by failure to adhere to required specifications. We also protect your home by using roofing materials such as ice and water barriers and lifetime warrantied roof vent boots at no additional charge. These added safeguards are standard features we provide at no added cost. You may also want to ask about our convenient financing program. So whether you need a minor roof repair or a new roof to protect your home or just to get ready for winter, I invite you to discover the All Dry Roofing difference.

A Healthy New Year’s Resolution for Your Home WHAT RESOLUTIONS are you making for

the New Year? Are they to eat healthier, exercise more often, make wiser financial decisions, earn more income, or reduce potential health risks within your home? If one of your resolutions is to protect your family from potential health risks within your home, Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning can help. Did you know that the quality of the air within your home can have a significant impact on your family’s health? There are many factors that can determine the quality of your indoor air, including your home’s carpeting, rugs, and upholstery. There are steps you can take on a regular basis, such as vacuuming, that will help improve indoor air quality. However, vacuuming has limitations, and only professional cleaning of these surfaces will deliver optimum results. The process of delivering optimum cleaning starts with the use of water. Sounds simple enough, but not if the carpet and rug cleaning company you select relies on ordinary tap water. You see, water is the universal solvent that’s used to remove soil and contaminants that can accumulate over time in carpeting, rugs, and upholstery. Pure, soft water is the only safe and proven method to remove these contaminants. Because untreated tap water contains chlorine, minerals, and silt, this untreated water can actually become the source of additional contaminants that remain after the cleaning is completed. Put another way, the water that you rely on to remove contaminants can actually add contaminants. At Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning, we only use water purified using Kinetico Aqua Clear Water Treatment Systems. Our purified water allows our technicians to CLEAN your carpets, rugs, and upholstery more thoroughly, effectively, and efficiently. That’s because we remove contaminants that can negatively impact your indoor air quality and do not introduce new contaminants by using untreated water. Because your home’s Oriental rugs cannot be professionally cleaned using the same methods used for carpeting and upholstery cleaning, Superior offers homeowners their proprietary, multi-step cleaning process, which is performed in their state-of-the-art Oriental rug washing studio. This assures that your Oriental and area rugs are both thoroughly and safely cleaned. Call Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning today, and give your family the gift of healthy, clean air in 2015.

Paint in the New Year PERHAPS IT’S just a single room inside

your home, or perhaps it’s the entire interior, but you just can’t stand the color. Maybe they’re the original colors, and because they’re builder’s grade quality, they’ve lost their luster and are not of the quality that allows walls, baseboards, and trim to be easily washed. Or maybe you’ve added new furniture, home décor items, or art that clashes with your existing color schemes. No matter what your reason or the size or number of rooms that require repainting, CertaPro Painters can help you transform every room in your home to restore that brand new, showroom quality appearance that it once had. Repainting not only renews your home’s appearance, but it also increases its resale value. So if you’ve made a resolution to update your home in the New Year, or if your spouse made the resolution for you, I’d like to offer you a special incentive to keep your resolution while saving you 30% at the same time. Right now, if you call me and schedule your painting or remodeling project to begin before March 15, you’ll save 30%. You’ll not only receive our special winter pricing, but you’ll also discover a level of quality in both our materials and workmanship that is becoming increasingly more difficult to find today. While you’re discussing your interior painting needs with us, don’t forget your home’s exterior or that we also offer a variety of other home repair and renovation services, including pressure washing, carpentry, drywall, faux finishing, staining, and wallpapering – all backed up with the same CertaPro guarantee for quality and workmanship. Transform Your Home’s Tub and Shower Glass Enclosures in 2015 SAY GOODBYE to that sliding shower door

that refuses to roll open effortlessly, comes off its track, or makes enough noise to wake the neighbor’s dog. Why not replace your outdated door in the New Year with a semi-frameless sliding door from Creative Reflections? Creative Reflections specializes in the removal and replacement of semi-frameless glass sliding doors. Our quality glass sliding enclosures don’t have that cheap, outdated look, nor do they cost an arm and a leg. The sliding glass enclosures we offer are far superior to the doors you’re likely familiar with or those available at the big box stores. Most homeowners prefer the appearance of frameless glass. We offer a variety of alternatives for tubs and shower areas where a frameless swing door configuration may not be the best option. The semiframeless enclosures are constructed of heavier gauge aluminum and thicker glass (3/8 inch) for a more luxurious look and feel. We also offer taller glass sliding units for shower areas, which makes them look and feel more rigid and sturdy. One of the most important improvements in sliding door configurations is the use of top rollers only. Our sliding doors are suspended from a roller system inside the header, and because there are no bottom rollers, there’s no need for a bottom frame on the glass. Select from several glass options such as ultraclear, low iron glass to highlight your shower ceramic tile designs. For more privacy, we offer a rain patterned glass option. We can also add decorative knobs or towel bars to the doors for additional convenience. Our semi-frameless sliding doors come standard with an easy clean bottom rail, so there’s no more trapped water, soap residue, or body oils which collect in the bottom grooves, creating an unsightly mess. The header bar is constructed of heavy gauge sidewalls, making it much more stable. Combined with the lifetime warranty on the smooth and quiet rollers, family members from young children to seniors will enjoy many years of trouble-free service from these easy to care for sliding glass doors. We offer a 10 year guarantee, in addition to applying a special glass sealer for easy maintenance. Simply squeegee the glass after each shower, and it’ll continue to look like the day it was installed. If you’re ready to update your home’s tub and shower enclosures, I invite you to call us today.

Frozen Water Pipes May Be Just the Beginning of Your Problems LAST WINTER thousands of Knoxville area

homeowners experienced flooding related to frozen water pipes. The one thing that each of these homeowners had in common was the belief that frozen water pipes, and the flooding that results, always happens to the other person. Last winter proved them wrong. When a water pipe bursts, every second counts. Water can permeate just about everything in your home, from carpeting and hardwood floors to cabinetry, furniture, insulation, drywall, and even our most priceless possessions. But unless the water remediation company you call has the necessary training and experience, your problems may have just started. Unless all water is removed from your home, you may have created the perfect environment for mold to grow. Left untreated, mold can not only damage your home, but it can also become the source of a variety of health related problems. That’s why I started Ethos Restoration. Ethos Restoration is a full-service, total turnkey water damage remediation contractor. Available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, we provide homeowners with the peace of mind they deserve. A licensed, bonded, and insured water damage restoration contractor, Ethos Restoration has a team of trained and experienced professionals that can handle every phase of your water damage emergency, from cleanup and mold remediation to restoration, remodeling, and rebuilding. Take all the necessary precautions to prevent water damage from frozen water pipes this winter, but if an emergency strikes, turn to the full-service water, storm, and fire damage specialists trusted by homeowners and insurance companies throughout East Tennessee, Ethos Restoration. The only number you’ll need to remember when water damage strikes is 865-693-3265.

January in the Garden IT’S TIME to bid farewell to

2014 and say hello to 2015. How was your year? I’m sure some of you will be sorry to see the year go, and others will slam the door shouting “good riddance!” For most of us, I assume it was a typical mixed bag of good and bad, happy and sad. Now it’s time for us to start looking to the future and making plans for next year. This includes plans for your landscape. During the cold months coming up, I harbor no illusions that you’re going to be outside working in your yard. Be aware, however, that yard work is a great stress reliever and cabin fever antidote. For those days when you have to get outside before you say something to your still visiting inlaws that will put you in deep trouble with your spouse, I’m conveniently providing you with a to-do list! » It’s predicted to be a cold winter. If you haven’t applied mulch this year, it would benefit you greatly to do so. Sending your plants into a harsh winter without mulch has much the same effect as sending your

kids out to play without coats. Well, that’s an exaggeration, but tender plants and newly planted trees and shrubs can certainly use the extra protection. Mulch also helps stabilize ground temperatures so shallow rooted plants don’t “heave” out of the ground. » While mulching is your most important winter chore, don’t overdo it. Whatever type of mulch you use, keep it at two to four inches. Deeper mulch promotes side roots, rot, and hiding places for rodents to gnaw away on your plants. » You can still plant trees and shrubs as long as the ground isn’t frozen. Yes, you need to mulch new plants and amend the soil. » Beware walking on frozen grass because it will damage the crown. You also need to continue to get leaves up with an occasional mowing or blowing so grass doesn’t suffocate. » Make sure your plants don’t dry out. We usually receive adequate rainfall in the winter months, but it’s very damaging for

plants to freeze while they’re dry. If we’ve gone more than a couple of weeks without measurable rain, you should water any shrubs that were planted in the past year. Evergreens are especially vulnerable since they are still losing water through their leaves or needles. Also, don’t forget those nice container gardens you planted either. They tend to get neglected in winter. » We’ve gotten several questions about pruning. I usually put mine off until late in January or February when plants are dormant. Do not prune spring bloomers until after they bloom, however! Also, please use sharp pruners so you don’t tear and injure the plants. Would you want your surgeon to use a dull blade? » You can cut back most perennials that have gone dormant. There are a few exceptions, so ask if you have questions. » No matter how cold and miserable the weather, I guarantee that you’ll have weeds. Try to keep the upper hand by weeding during the warmer days. You can also apply a pre-emergent such as Preen to prevent weed seeds from germinating. Remember that these products should be reapplied every few months. » Don’t forget the birds. Food and water supplies start to run low for them, and a wellstocked bird area with several food sources and a non-frozen water source will provide hours of entertainment. During my mom’s last days, her primary source of enjoyment was the hundreds of birds that flocked to the feeders outside her window. Nothing competes with the beauty of red cardinals or blue jays against snow. » Your inside plants probably need some attention by now. Small plants can be placed in the sink and rinsed off to remove dust, and larger plants can go in the shower. If the plants are too large to move, dust the leaves with a cloth or Swiffer. If dry, indoor air is making them unhappy, try a humidifier or a tray of pebbles and water placed under them. You may not need to water them as often, so check the soil before watering. Remember that even succulents should be watered occasionally! Every two or three weeks should suffice. » You can start seeds for annuals, perennials, and herbs inside. There are cute little grow kits available, or you can use old egg cartons and a lamp. That’s all for this month! Watch our Facebook page and website for spring activities, and call or stop by with any questions. We are here five days a week in the winter and will be happy to help. Happy New Year!

TRADITIONAL

SEED SWAP AT IJAMS

“However many years she lived, Mary always felt that she should never forget that first morning when her garden began to grow,” wrote Frances Hodgson Burnett in The Secret Garden.

J

ANUARY: IT’S COLD. It’s

dreary. But, we all know that spring is on the way. Traditionally, this is the time of the year to look forward to better weather and start planning your garden. Whether it’s a backyard plot or a container on your downtown balcony, what are you going to plant this year? There was a time when you didn’t buy seeds; you traded for them. Ijams Nature Center held its first Seed Swap in 1995. On a Saturday in April, members, friends, and visitors came together and brought their favorite seeds, cuttings, or bulbs to share with others. We discovered it was a chance to share not only plants but also gardening lore, growing experiences, and family stories. The history of seed sharing is told not only in diaries and journals but also in letters and oral histories from many of our ancestors. A seed swap was one of the ways our forbearers found out about different successful varieties of plants. At Ijams, we continue that tradition. Our Seed Swap has become a rich and rewarding experience during the past 20 years. It is a kind of family reunion where organized chaos reigns. New and old gardeners bring in seeds, cuttings, bulbs, and sprouts – anything they have that they want to share. This year’s Seed Swap is Saturday, January 31, from 1 to 4 pm. Bring seeds to swap, but

even if you have none to share, there’s always plenty to go around. Make it a part of your gardening tradition. For information, call Peg Beute at 865-577-4717, ext. 114. Ijams Public Programs Shake that cabin fever. The Ijams education staff has several activities and programs planned to get you out and about. Stephen Lyn will host a Birding and Breakfast talk on Saturday, January 10. This month’s topic is “Winter Birds.” Dr. Louise Conrad, the Ijams veterinarian, will lead another Wag n’ Walk doggie outing on Saturday, January 17. Sabrina DeVaultGreene will host a Children’s Nature Hour on Saturday, January 17, and a Stroller Stroll for young ones and their adult partners on Thursday, January 29. Free Creature Feature animal programs are also regular happenings on all Saturdays. On select Saturday mornings, Peg or Jill will be serving breakfast for visitors with the proceeds going to the education department.

For information about any of these programs, including dates, start times, fees, and registration, call 865-577-4717, ext. 110, or visit www.ijams.org/events. Nature Almanac While on a nature walk at Ijams this month, look for these signs of the season: Witch hazel is surprisingly in bloom around the Plaza Pond. Even though most of their leaves are long gone, these native shrubs put forth their flowers late. They look like shredded yellow coconut. Many species of birds only spend their winters in the Tennessee Valley. They nest farther north or much higher in the mountains. Look for the isolated hermit thrush at Ijams. It’s the species poet Walt Whitman called the bird with “the bleeding throat” because of its melancholy song. If you are lucky, you might notice two feathered pixies skittering about the trees. Goldencrowned and ruby-crowned kinglets can both be found at Ijams, but only in the winter. As always, Ijams welcomes you in all seasons, 12 months of the year. Peg Beute is a senior naturalist in charge of the gardening demonstration site and gardening programs and a darn good cook. Stephen Lyn Bales is senior naturalist at Ijams and the author of Natural Histories and Ghost Birds published by UT Press and available in the Ijams gift shop. Januar y 2015 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

Storage Systems Promote Healthier Living GETTING ORGANIZED is said to be

the second most possible vow made when we prepare for the new year. Here are some benefits from tackling that chore: » You’ll be able to relax more. We often waste two hours a day looking for something. A well-organized home will help you find things faster. » You’ll feel better about your home. » You’ll stay healthier by reducing stress. » A well-organized home is easier and faster to clean and straighten up. » You’ll save money, because many purchases actually never get used because they can’t be found once they’re brought home. You’ll only buy items you have a place for. Start with your bedroom. Shouldn’t you have a closet that makes you feel better at the start and end of every day? Then take a look at the entryway you use most often. How does that make you feel every time you use it? Then move on to your pantry, laundry, each bedroom, the garage, etc. View them each as an opportunity to make you feel better. A time to purge and reduce the clutter of things you no longer need. There are closet, shelving, and storage systems that will fit anywhere in your home

or office. There are inspirational designs for every room or space. There are combinations that are limitless and offer extensive, stylish design options ranging from traditional to contemporary. We use systems that provide us the ability to adapt to every need. The endless configuration options achieve multiple uses such as room dividers, a display system, shelving, storage, or even a fabulous walk-in closet. Whatever the space, we can create a personalized furniture system just for you. Tight on space? Systems like these can help you transform any space into one that’s not only functional, but looks great, too. Get the most of every space in your home. Whether it’s a space to entertain the family, putting space under a staircase to good use, or a place for display, there’s a system that will work just right for your home.

It’s advantageous to use a professional when organizing your home. It’ll save you time, money, and the frustration often felt from “do-it-yourself” projects. Organizing is just one of those projects that seems overwhelming and almost always gets put off for another day. Let a professional put an end to the procrastination and get you moving on to the neat home you want and deserve. At Decorating Den, we specialize in organizing your home to maximize your space and get the most out of your home. Let us show you how we can help with our free Refresh and Renew Review. Make a Clean Start to the New Year RECENTLY WE hosted a beautiful baby

shower for our oldest daughter, who is due with our first grandchild. Our home bustled with almost 40 people, all of whom had worn their shoes during the evening and several that made numerous trips through the yard as they came back and forth from their respective vehicles. We had a great time, but when they left, my floors were filthy. After we vacuumed up loose leaf fragments and grass clippings that littered the entire first level, we were left with shoe prints, punch spills, and a lot of dirt that had been ground into our carpets, as well as our tile. My first thought was thankfulness for the incredible cleaning equipment I was sure we would need to clean this mess. My next thought was to ask John to clean it… that day. He declined as he told me that all I needed to do was wipe the tile and grout with hot water and to simply vacuum the carpets. Three hours

later, all traces of the party had been erased. I almost couldn’t believe it. The sealer John had used on our hard surfaces and the Teflon guard on our carpets made cleanup a snap. Never before had our floors been put to such a test, but because we had been proactive in protecting our floors, it was easy to bring all our surfaces back to perfection with minimal effort. Perhaps this holiday season was particularly brutal to your home and you need to call in some professionals. If it’s been a while since your carpets were cleaned, or if they experienced some abuse this season, you will want to address the problem before it gets out of hand. After an intensive deep-down sanitizing clean, which ensures the entire carpet structure is clean and sanitized, you may opt to apply a Teflon guard. This additional step acts as a layer of protection to the carpet fiber to reduce wear, as well as to repel soil. But what about your home’s tile and grout?

Make a New Year’s Resolution to Fully Enjoy Your Home’s Outdoor Living Spaces This Spring

W

HILE HOMEOWNERS across

the country are increasingly creating popular outdoor “rooms” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially made to be weather-proof, flying and biting insects often keep homeowners from using their new outdoor spaces. Retractable screens provide the perfect answer to these problems. By combining indoor and outdoor spaces, these innovative screen solutions enhance and promote our outdoor living experience. They provide shade and allow people to extend the time that they, family, and friends spend on patios while keeping annoying, biting insects at bay. Large, motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of a building, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. The best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish the views or your home’s esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, some of the retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. These retractable screens are available in different custom colors and wood grain finishes that help merge the screens with your interior or exterior color schemes. The screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and be connected to the general building automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection is called for. Why not make a New Year’s resolution this year that your entire family can enjoy? Create a season of memorable out of door experiences with family and friends in 2015 with retractable screens from Screens of East Tennessee. Rhythm N’ Blooms Music Festival Announces 2015 Dates and Three Artists THE MUSIC-FOCUSED highlight of

Dogwood Arts’ April celebration will once again rock Knoxville over a three-day span from April 10-12. With the stages set exclusively along downtown Knoxville’s historic Jackson Avenue, Rhythm N’ Blooms will showcase first-timers, chart-climbers, and highly lauded acts from varied musical backgrounds. The Decemberists, The Dirty Guv’Nahs, and Delta Spirit were the bands festival producers released recently – a small taste of the 2015 festival lineup, with many more artists to be announced in the New Year. Tickets for the music festival are on sale now. Three-day passes are $60 each and VIP passes are $125. To purchase festival and VIP tickets, visit www.rhythmnbloomsfest. com/tickets. The Decemberists After a four-year hiatus, the band’s highly anticipated tour in support of their new album “What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World” stops in Knoxville for a headline performance at the festival. 50

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE Januar y 2015

“In some ways, this album was four years in the making,” says Colin Meloy, frontman and primary songwriter of the Decemberists. “We were on hiatus, so we had all the time we could want, no schedule or tour, no expectations.” With the ability to work at their own pace, the resulting record is the band’s most varied and dynamic work, both musically and emotionally. The Dirty Guv’nahs Knoxville’s own Dirty Guv’nahs make their festival debut in 2015 – a performance that has been years in the making. Each year Rhythm N’ Blooms features a headline act with local ties, and audience members have long requested the Guvs. But it wasn’t until now that the timing worked out. The live experience of The Dirty Guv’nahs has been hailed as one of the best in the southeast. They are led by the soulful holler of singer-songwriter James Trimble and accentuated by the intricate lead guitar work of Cozmo Holloway and the tasteful piano, organ, and harmony vocals of Kevin Hyfantis. The sturdy rhythm section of the band

is filled out by brothers Justin and Aaron Hoskins on bass and drums, along with the glue and musical leadership of songwriter Michael Jenkins on the rhythm guitar. Delta Spirit “Into the Wide,” the fourth album from San Diego-bred five-piece Delta Spirit, was born in a flood-ruined, cave-like, rat-colonized room in the band’s new hometown of Brooklyn. After spending more than a year writing together in the windowless studio they rebuilt after Hurricane Sandy wreaked its havoc, the group resurfaced with a batch of demos and headed to Georgia to team up with Ben Allen (a producer/engineer known for his work with artists like Animal Collective and Deerhunter). Recorded near an old shipping yard in Atlanta, “Into the Wide” intimately captures the claustrophobia of Delta Spirit’s creative space, turning that tension into a moody meditation on the restlessness of city life, growing older, and longing for escape. New Year’s Resolution: Get Organized and Enjoy Life More JANUARY IS the perfect time to finally com-

mit to getting more organized. In fact, since getting organized is one of the most common New Year’s resolutions, January is National Get Organized Month. Organization is about creating conveniently designed rooms that make your life easier. Be Realistic Trying to organize your house in a week is enthusiastic but probably unrealistic. Start with a space that’s an organizational priority. Clear the Clutter In each room, remove items no longer needed. Place them in piles for donating, recycling, or tossing away. Then make a list of organizational items you need, such as additional shelving or cabinets in the laundry or children’s rooms. Clear Garage and Front Door Entry If you always enter and exit through disorder, you’ll carry that clutter – emotionally and physically – into the rest of your home and out into the world. Having a clean entryway and garage flows into the rest of your home and life. Organize Your Closet Donate or toss anything not worn in the past year. Organize clothes by style, color, and season so you can see everything at a glance. Add shelving so shoes can be easily seen. Install belt or scarf racks to end the search for disappearing accessories, and a slide-out valet rod helps saves time by helping plan outfits in advance. If your closet is a wire system, consider investing in an affordable, custom-designed closet to maximize available space. A custom-designed closet adds 30% more storage space than wire shelving or do-it-yourself kits. Stay Organized An organized home reduces stress by decluttering your mind so you can focus on the important things in life. Keep everything in order by spending just 15 minutes a day decluttering. From the closet to the garage, Tailored Living can help organize every room in the house. Using 3D design software, Tailored Living’s organization specialists listen to your needs, create a computer model of your new organization system, and provide a quote – all in one free visit. With Tailored Living helping you get organized, this is one New Year’s resolution you can keep!

Here’s One New Year’s Resolution I Can Help You Keep

I

T’S NEW YEAR’S resolution time

again. Most of us make them, and few of us keep them. It’s a shame really, as most of our resolutions are well intended. Because the resolutions we make most often are health, well-being, and financially related, keeping them could have a very positive impact on our lives. There is one resolution I could help you with. If you’re committed to making every dollar go further in 2015, I can help. Take a look around your home. Have you relocated, downsized, or become an empty nester recently? Why not transform your quality, unused furniture, art, and home décor items into cash? On the other hand, if you are looking for just the right accent piece, a room, or an entire house full of furniture, we can help with that too and at savings of up to 80% off original retail. We offer quality, gently used furniture from the nation’s top manufacturers, including Henredon, Lane, and Thomasville, just to name a few. Have you ever wondered where our furniture, art, and home décor items come from? From homes just like yours, all along the Kingston Pike corridor, from Sequoyah Hills to Farragut and on to Tellico Village and Rarity Bay.

Here’s another suggestion. Chalk type paint is all the rage now. Actually, we offer a chalk-free paint that outperforms other similar paints that you can purchase in a wide variety of colors and sizes, so you only buy what you need. Stop by, and we’ll show you how we miraculously transformed 52

furniture pieces that you can do at home yourself, or if you buy the furniture here, we can arrange to have it painted for you at a very reasonable price – far less than what you would pay elsewhere. Sell your unused quality furniture, buy quality, brand name furniture at up to 80% off original prices, or transform an existing piece of furniture from our extensive collection of furniture paints from Blackberry House paints. Consign To Design can help you keep your New Year’s resolution to keep more of your hard-earned income in 2015.

STEEP CANYON RANGERS January 7 • 8 PM • Bijou Theatre

WHEN THE time came for the Steep Canyon Rangers to record the follow-up to 2012’s Nobody Knows You, they headed north to Woodstock, NY, to Levon Helm’s famed studio with Grammy-winning producer Larry Campbell and engineer Justin Guip. This was a departure from their previous albums, where they chose co-producers from within the bluegrass

community. Instead of having Campbell co-produce, the band gave him full control. During the months before they started to record Tell The Ones I Love, they sent him several dozen new songs to consider. While the Steep Canyon Rangers were certainly open to recording songs by other composers, or to dip into traditional material, Campbell ultimately had them record all original tunes, based both on the strength of the songs and the band’s arrangements. This seems fitting for a band whose stellar reputation is based on performing original material and who had just won the Best Bluegrass Album Grammy Award for Nobody Knows You. There’s a backstory here, too: Last year the band played Levon’s Midnight Ramble and impressed Helm enough that he invited them to come back and record at the barn. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen before his untimely passing, but they still felt his joyful, creative spark and subtle influence while working in his studio. Photo by Jacob Blickenstaff

First Reception in The Guest House at the Alexander Inn

O

(As published in The Oak Ridger’s Historically Speaking column on November 24, 2014)

N NOVEMBER 7, 2014, a group of approx-

imately 50 people gathered in the historic Guest House at the Alexander Inn. Many of them had just attended the two-day East Tennessee Preservation Alliance’s 2014 annual conference held in the Y-12 New Hope Center. This reception was a pre-completion celebration to let interested individuals view the progress being made to create the senior living center that is the ultimate result of the restorative efforts by Rick Dover of Family Pride Corporation. The reception was held in the area where the main cafeteria will be located. As the visitors arrived, they were met by a brightly lit front entrance. The interior was lit by temporary electrical wires strung across the rafters and through the open wall studs to makeshift lighting fixtures. Music was provided by Kim Trent’s iPhone playing through a portable sound system. Kim is the Executive Director of Knox Heritage, the parent organization for the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance of 16 East Tennessee counties. Portable heaters knocked off the chill in the air as the evening progressed. The visitors signed the guest book at the original counter that had served such dignitaries as Robert Oppenheimer, Senator John F. Kennedy and Jackie, Enrico Fermi, and maybe even General Leslie Groves (although he is rumored to have preferred the maternity wing of the Oak Ridge hospital). Kim Trent, Rick Dover, and Scott Brooks (ETPA President) spoke to the audience. Kim recalled the efforts of the city of Oak Ridge, the Department of Energy, the Oak Ridge Heritage & Preservation Association, the Tennessee Historical Commission, and cited the teamwork that resulted in the $500K stabilization grant that enabled this project to become a reality. Scott thanked the audience for coming and for their support. Rick Dover described the restoration effort to include the final plans for the facility and the 64 spacious senior living units. He indicated that a lot of phone calls were being received from people wanting to reserve space already. Rick was complimentary of all the support received by the city, state, and 56

federal agencies to enable the development. He expressed excitement as he saw the final touches being placed on the restoration. His vision of the potential for The Guest House at the Alexander Inn is refreshing and a delightful turn of events for local preservationists who had fought for years to save the structure. Howard Harvey would be proud! The State Historic Preservation Officer, Patrick McIntyre, was given a private look at the progress, as he was unable to attend the reception. He was most impressed with what he saw and expressed the importance of saving this iconic Oak Ridge structure again and again. It was actually his suggestion that got the ball rolling to allow for the substitution of the $500K from the K-25 preservation initiative by DOE Environmental Management. The original flooring is being preserved in as much of the area as possible in the facility area near the cafeteria, and the fireplace in the main lobby will again be the centerpiece of what one sees when they walk through the front door. As much as is feasible, original items are being retained. Rick indicated a desire to have the main lobby become a museum curated by the Oak Ridge Heritage & Preservation Association and for the Manhattan Project National Historical Park to include the lobby and

museum in heritage tourism tours. There will be public events held there, and visitors will be encouraged to drop by and see the historic inn that will once again be one of the main attractions of the Jackson Square (townsite) historic district. The evening reception was a delight! Attendees got a glimpse of what the future holds for the grand ole Guest House. It will have a third chance at survival, and it will thrive for many more years than it functioned as a Guest House or the Alexander Inn. The Guest House at the Alexander Inn senior living center will be with us for a very long time. We will be proud of the iconic historic structure along with the Chapel on the Hill and Jackson Square, which together will form a heritage tourism hot spot. These three historic facilities will form key elements of interest in upcoming tour guides that will undoubtedly be developed as a part of the Manhattan Project National Historical Park. Already there is a replacement being developed for the dated Oak Ridge driving tour created several years by Leadership Oak Ridge that will feature the senior living center’s main lobby, as well as many other attractions in our historic city. It is good to see such progress!

Clinton Glass SUCCESS

As a business owner I receive calls every day from advertising reps asking me to spend money with them. Whether it’s print, radio or television, they all suggest that their advertising method is the best way to get my message out to potential clients. They have a high hill to climb, because Everything Knoxville already does a great job of finding potential customers for us. Everything Knoxville puts out a quality monthly publication that is mailed directly to homeowners. That means my customers pull the magazine directly out of their mailbox, making it more likely for them to read. We track our client phone calls from several advertising sources, and Everything Knoxville does better dollar for dollar than any other publication I’ve advertised in. Thanks Judy and Tom!

Mary Miller SWEET SOLES

OWNING A shoe store isn’t Mary Miller’s

first career, but it’s one she loves. After being a school teacher for 25 years, Mary is now the owner of Sweet Soles in Sweetwater. “I have had a boutique in Northeast Harbor, Maine (near Bar Harbor) for 15 years,” said Mary. “A shoe designer approached me about carrying shoes in the boutique and starting a shoe store in Charlotte, North Carolina, our winter home, so I started a small store in 2012. Little by little, I learned about the industry, met some wonderful mentors along the way, and developed a very loyal clientele. When the opportunity presented itself, Sweetwater seemed to be a natural evolution.” Mary opened Sweet Soles on September 15, 2014. “I start my day rather early,” she said. “All the creative work and all the bookkeeping take place before the working day begins at 10 am. The doors are open and the customers are all important. Each customer is served with care. Customer service is essential in any small family business. The goal is to keep our

customers interested by having varied and comfortable styles from good shoe companies that make beautiful shoes and boots.” Mary studied fine arts and humanities at San Diego State University. “I am new to business life!” she said. “The day goes in waves from very busy to less so. When I am not serving a customer, there is a fair amount of paperwork, ordering, and mailing. The website needs attention, as do social media and personal correspondence. The day is full and doesn’t end at 5:30 when the doors close!” Mary says the biggest challenges she faces are being consistent, keeping the process creative, making sure the store is beautiful for customers, and ensuring their experiences are unique. “I love meeting customers, learning about what works for them in terms of style, but also getting to know them as friends,” she said. “I also enjoy studying trends and working with the companies that make the shoes.” Mary draws much of her inspiration from

wouldn’t be interested in being a teacher – that is, until she actually got into a classroom and fell in love with teaching. “I was working on a master’s degree in mathematics at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and my major professor approached me about a teaching position at Austin-East High School,” said Jannice, who now teaches at Dr. Paul L. Kelley Volunteer Academy. “Apparently, there had been several teachers in the position who had each chosen to leave after a few weeks. My professor thought I would be a good candidate for the job. I assured him that I was not interested in the job, and he asked if I would consider teaching for a semester until they could get someone permanent in the position. I agreed, fell in love with the students, faculty, administration, and the community, and stayed for 24 years.” Jannice’s love for teaching has endured, so much so that she’s been named the 2014 Simon Youth Foundation National Teacher of the Year. I am enormously grateful to work with such dedicated professionals.” Her daily schedule at the academy, a nontraditional high school that teaches 11th and 12th graders, is different from that of most teachers. “We run year-round with a three and a half week break during the summer,” said Jannice. “We have two sessions; one is from 8:30 am until noon, and the other session is from 1-4 pm. New Year’s Resolutions for Your Small Business THE ORIGINS of New Year’s resolutions,

which were primarily religious in nature, date back to the ancient Babylonians. Today almost 40% of all Americans are estimated to make resolutions annually, despite the fact that their failure rate is a whopping 88%. The failure rate of New Year’s resolutions is based on the failure to achieve a stated goal; for instance, losing 25 pounds. But the real success, I believe, results from acknowledging a needed area of self-improvement. Execution of your plan to achieve your desired results can be refined through trial and error over time. So don’t give up on identifying areas of self-improvement just because you’ve come up short in the area of execution. Here are sure ways to succeed: » Identify areas requiring self-improvement. » Implement a common sense approach to achieving your goals. » Make yourself accountable to a trusted friend. Want to stretch yourself just a bit further in

Like personal resolutions, success with business resolutions begins when you identify areas of improvement and then implement an achievable plan for succeeding. 2015? How about combining your personal resolutions with those of your small business? Just like yourself, your small business most likely can benefit from resolutions focusing on its financial health, well-being, and its relationships with customers. Ask yourself these questions for starters: » Are you managing your small business or is it managing you? Identify possible areas for healthy future growth, and invest time

implementing a well-thought out plan for success. Tr y de l e gat i ng routine tasks to co-workers to free up the needed time. » Can your customers and prospective new clients differentiate you from your competitors? Don’t expect great success in a generic marketplace. Identify those areas where you can successfully differentiate your small business and then implement a marketing strategy to educate existing and future new customers. Like personal resolutions, success with business resolutions begins when you identify areas of improvement and then implement an achievable plan for succeeding. But consider supercharging your potential for success by becoming accountable for your resolutions to a trusted friend, mentor, or co-worker. Happy New Year!

Finding the New You in the New Year IT ’ S N O T about resolutions. While

they have their place, life is defined by commitments. It’s true that you can quickly determine your values by reviewing your checkbook and calendar. Where you spend your money and time is how to accurately define what you value most. Many have heard the common phrase “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.” Often New Year’s resolutions are about good intentions. Workout more, eat better, spend more time with family, spend less time on this or that. While such goals have merit, the reason they top most lists year after year is because we don’t take them from intention to commitment. The question is, who are you now? Who you are and who you wish you were are two different people. It’s about accepting what is, while giving the person you wish to become a comfortable identity, and how to make decisions that envelope both. Then define clearly, who do you wish you were? Often we let that person taunt us, reminding us of what we have not accomplished or goals we have not attained. Those thoughts often lead to feelings of regret and

failure. Instead, those very thoughts can be the launching pad of a renewed sense of energy and commitment in the new year. Get specific: » Getting healthier. It’s the top resolution every year, yet it’s unrealistic at its core. Instead, give up completely (for the year) one unhealthy habit or food. Chips, candy, fried foods. Take the stairs to your office. Make ONE tangible decision that leads to a healthier lifestyle. When you’ve mastered that one commitment, then add one more. Build tenacity. » Better time management. This is another list topper, yet again unrealistic. Start with identifying time wasters. There is no worse feeling than realizing you’ve wasted a good chunk of time each day on a useless habit. No more than 30 minutes a day on Facebook. Turn your phone off one hour a day. Shut the door to your office for productive blocks of creative thinking without interruption. Make commitments and then honor them. Build strength. » Achieving your dreams. What keeps us from feeling like our dreams are unattainable

is the deception that they are no longer achievable. They are. You must remind yourself daily that decisions, not intentions, are what lead to accomplishments. Build confidence. All it takes is one good decision at a time to change everything. To accurately assess the changes in your life that will lead to the changes you want, review 2014 honestly. Boldly identify your weaker decisions, and then boldly deny them in 2015. It is that simple. One great decision leads to the next. Success builds on success. Commitments become habits and we become stronger in denying that which robs us of what is rightly ours, a sense of purpose and confident identity. Build consistency. Have you found the new you for the new year? You are one great decision away. Beth Townsend is a dynamic freelance speaker and writer and can be reached at 225.910.7426. A Different Take on New Year’s Resolutions IT IS EXCITING to make New Year’s

resolutions. They are made with good intentions, and most of us try hard to fulfill them. While you are making your resolutions for the year, make a couple in regard to how you parent. No matter how awesome of a mom or dad you may be, we all can grow, learn, and improve. Here is a list of possible resolutions to consider, or you can come up with ones of your own. Be realistic and choose resolutions that will benefit both you and your family. Work on Being Consistent Setting consistent limits and boundaries and following them up with proper discipline can be a struggle in today’s fast-paced world, but both you and your children need this consistency. When children and teens refuse to cooperate and misbehave, act calm and reasonable. While you should be willing to give a little ground and negotiate for special circumstance, do be consistent with your discipline. Focus on the Positives and Give Compliments If you catch yourself nagging or constantly focusing on your children’s negative behaviors, work on that. Just like adults, children

and teens will respond favorably to positive comments. Focus on the things about your children that are unique and positive. Point out these good traits to them, and give compliments when you see them doing good things. Be an Encourager A recent study estimated that children and teens hear approximately 17 discouraging comments in their home for every one encouraging comment. Most parents don’t set out to discourage their children on purpose or act negative on purpose. However, children who grow up in a discouraging, negativeminded environment often internalize things and develop low self-esteem. So be careful with your words. It is better to say nothing at all unless you can be encouraging about situations and life. Don’t Over Protect Good parents want to protect their children. However, many parents over protect their children and end up hurting them in the long run. Do you find yourself consistently making extra trips home to pick up and deliver things to your child that she has forgotten? Do you often have to pay fines for overdue

library books, movies or games, parking tickets, or speeding tickets for your child? Do you find yourself doing your child’s chores because his life is so busy? If you are doing these types of things repeatedly, your attempts at protecting and being a good parent is backfiring. Children learn to be accountable and develop responsibility and independence through life lessons. Don’t always step in and rob them of these opportunities. These are just a few resolutions you can consider for the New Year. Remember, any step you take to improve yourself is a step in the right direction for your family as a whole. If you fall off the resolution-wagon, don’t quit. Get back on and begin again. Wendy Jackson is a freelance writer based in Blount County, Tennessee. Being Condescending I WANT to talk about a topic that I think we

as parents need to guard against – speaking with a condescending tone to our children (or anyone for that matter, because our children are listening). The definition of condescending is: Having or showing a feeling of patronizing (believing that we are more intelligent or better than others) superiority. Basically, it’s really a slap in the face. Let me describe the unspoken or spoken messages we are sending to those we are speaking to when we use condescending language or tone. They are: » I can’t believe you would be stupid enough to say/do that! » Surely you don’t really believe that is true! » Do you literally have no idea regarding consequences? » I, however, would never do/say such a thing. » I am never guilty of such an offense. And the list goes on. Allow me to give you a few examples: A child is helping his dad wash the car. The 66

dad looks at the front where the child has washed and says, “Really? So I guess you think bugs on the car is considered clean?” What does the child hear? “You are so stupid that you can’t even get bugs off the car. I can’t believe that’s the best you can do.” Instead, dad could have said, “Hey, that front is tough to wash. Let me show you a little trick I use to get those nasty bugs off. Let’s see if it works for you, too.” The difference: Now the child wants to do better instead of feeling humiliated. Mom is helping her child write a paragraph for English class. Her child is misspelling words and failing at making complete sentences. Mom says, “Honey! I can’t believe you’re misspelling simple words. You should know these. This doesn’t even make sense. I thought you already learned what makes a complete sentence.” What does the child hear? You fail at writing, so why try. Instead, mom could have said, “It took me a while to figure out the difference between the different ways to spell ‘there’. Let me draw a picture for

you to see if it helps.” The difference: Instead of the child becoming exasperated due to the multiple corrections, the child can feel accomplished when they understand the one grammar rule, thus leading to confidence to move on to the second rule. Parents, let’s watch our tone. Speaking with compassion and respect to our children creates a greater desire to learn and obey. If our children hear negative “unspoken” messages too often or for too long, then we will have no one to blame but ourselves when we hear our children speaking this way to others and when our relationship with them as adults is not what we would hope. Start today.

that our neck and chest are left out of the daily skin care regimen, which means they are showing age at a much faster rate than our face. Clothing often exposes the chest to the sun, making it vulnerable to sun damage and signs of aging just like the face. It’s time to treat your chest as well as you do your face. While there are many energy-based devices on the market that are used to treat wrinkles and lines on various surfaces of

the skin, Ultherapy Décolletege Treatment is now the ONLY non-invasive procedure specifically indicated by the FDA to improve lines and wrinkles on the chest. The Ultherapy Décolletage Treatment is a safe, non-invasive, non-surgical treatment that takes only 30 minutes. With one single procedure, patients notice improvement in lines and wrinkles on the chest by using safe ultrasound that stimulates the body’s natural collagen production. In addition to Ultherapy Décolletage Treatment, Ultherapy remains the only

Before Ultherapy

non-invasive procedure FDA cleared to lift skin on the neck, under the chin, and brow. Ultherapy is able to do this by going deeper into the tissue than lasers and radio frequency without injuring the surface of the skin. Another factor that promotes safety and maximizes results is that with Ultherapy, we can visualize the targeted areas. Results will unfold during the course of two to three months, with maximum improvement at six months. Ultherapy uses focused ultrasound technology to bypass the delicate upper layers of skin and target deeper tissues. Think of a magnifying glass’s ability to focus sunlight into an extremely high temperature point capable of burning. This is similar to how Ultherapy works. While ultrasound technology does not duplicate the results of plastic surgery, Ultherapy is an inviting alternative for those who are not yet ready or who are not candidates for surgery.
