From the Publisher BY THE time March arrives, the

Knoxville area starts experiencing more moderate temperatures, and we know spring is just around the corner. Soon everyone will be focused on outdoor activities. I look forward to time on the lake like boating, fishing, swimming, and just enjoying the sunshine. To stay in shape for spring and summer apparel, I have been consistent during the winter in doing power walking, weather permitting. But walking is not always enough. Overall fitness requires more, and our featured business, Koko FitClub, has the answer, combining programs that include nutrition, aerobics, and strength training, all using the latest in technological equipment. In this feature highlight, you will meet Patricia Kilgore, owner of the Koko FitClubs in Knoxville, and you will discover how 4

Believe it or not, summer is just around the corner, which means impromptu visits to the pool, lake, and even quick weekend trips to the beach. Who would want to miss out on these fun opportunities based on unsightly hair issues? Not us! We all know being swimsuit ready is not an easy fete. Yes, there are ways of getting rid of hair, such as waxing and shaving. These types of treatments must be repeated and are not permanent. Who has time for that these days? But there is hope! Have you ever considered laser? On average, we spend about 130 minutes shaving a month. Also, don’t forget all the supplies to go along with that – razors, creams, and smell-good lotions Admit it; a majority of us received a tattoo on a “double dog dare” sometime in our past. Even though the story may be great, the regret and embarrassment is too much to handle in today’s time. At Gallaher Plastic Surgery and Spa MD, we are here to help. Revolutionizing Fitness in 30 Minutes or Less

A

S IS SO often the case,

necessity became the mother of invention, and Koko FitClub became a reality. Founded in 2004, Koko FitClub was the creation of entrepreneurs and husband and wife team, Mike Lannon and Mary Obana. Overwhelmed by busy careers and a young family, Mike and Mary experienced what so many others experience – greater emphasis on career and family activities and less emphasis on personal fitness. Recognizing that their desire to get back into shape and still balance their careers and family would be others’ desires as well, this entrepreneurial couple combined their creative skills to launch Koko FitClub. This revolutionary new concept combines technology with the science of fitness to produce truly amazing results when compared to other traditional fitness models. Koko FitClub is a comprehensive approach to fitness, unlike other plans that often focus only on weight loss or building lean muscle. Koko FitClub’s comprehensive fitness model combines the most important aspects of total fitness, including exercise, cardio, nutrition, and other important health related criteria. By focusing on total fitness, Koko FitClub helps their members achieve an uncommon level of health and well-being that can have a very positive impact on their lives and their futures. 6

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE March 2015

The success of Koko FitClub has grown to 28 states, with two locations here in Knoxville (in Bearden and Farragut). Patricia Kilgore, a Registered Nurse and lifetime fitness enthusiast, realized the life-changing potential that Koko FitClub’s comprehensive approach to fitness offered the community and opened both clubs in 2012. EK: As a medical professional, does it bother you to see the piecemeal approach to fitness that so many of us pursue? Patricia: Where do I begin? It drives me crazy! The appeal of a specific “quick fix” is marketed to appeal to people’s emotions. I love the “lose weight while you sleep” promise. We are bombarded daily with unrealistic promises that appeal to our emotions. We know better. To achieve the most effective results and maintain them, we must make balanced lifestyle changes involving our activity level and nutrition. It does take action on our part, but the “no pain, no gain” attitude of yesterday is really not true. We do not need pain to make gains. It doesn’t have to be that hard. That is why Koko is so great. We do the research and planning for you. You commit, and you will get fit. EK: Why do those of us who wish to enhance our personal fitness avoid this more comprehensive approach? Patricia: It’s primarily a lack of knowledge. Most of us don’t possess the knowledge required to plan out a comprehensive program

that includes exercise, cardio conditioning, and dietary changes that will help us meet our goals. It is also about having been exposed for years to misinformation that is now accepted as factual, when actually there is little or no science to back it up. EK: Is that why you feel that many people with even the best intentions confuse activity with fitness? Patricia: So many people in our society today are de-conditioned. We only need to look around us. No one enjoys being overweight, lacking energy, or taking medicines for chronic conditions. People have a real desire to be more fit and healthy, but how does one go about it? Just getting moving is a start and is definitely better than sitting on the couch. However, it does not usually reach the level of intensity required to achieve significant change. EK: Tell our readers about Koko’s unique approach and the personal assessments you conduct for each member. Patricia: What struck me immediately when I was introduced to the Koko concept was its simplicity. Yet, the “total package” was all there! What sets Koko apart from other “traditional, older style” gyms is the unique software system and patented Smartraining equipment. When you join a Koko FitClub, you are not just purchasing access to a facility. You are purchasing a customized training program with a built-in support system of

Koko FitClub. A Digital Gym. FitCoaches that are there to guide and motivate you on your fitness journey. We use our patented technology to bring the knowledge of our world-class personal trainers to each workout session. All workout data is stored on a member’s Koko key to help track and analyze progress. When people visit us for the first time, we offer a comprehensive fitness assessment. This innovative process includes defining goals, identifying limitations, and performing a baseline strength test to determine current fitness levels. EK: So how do you create a personalized plan to help individuals achieve strength, cardio, and nutritional goals? Patricia: It is really amazing. Based on information gathered during the assessment and strength test, we recommend a program track. The program is then customized through a series of complicated algorithms to define each person’s fitness level, and the training begins. EK: You offer members a wide variety of programs and options that can be periodically adjusted. Please explain. Patricia: As members progress, their program is adjusted based on periodic strength tests and milestones. But that is just the strength component. In addition, we help with cardio conditioning and nutrition. The saying “abs are made at the table” is true. Changing eating habits is as hard as any workout, if not harder. Koko FitClub knows this and offers personal coaching and accountability sessions to help with fuel. We have a number of membership options to meet different budgets and fitness goals. We use a team approach (members + FitCoaches) to ensure all fitness needs are covered. EK: Tell us how Koko FitClub helps its members avoid high blood pressure, diabetes, and other diseases. Patricia: We really do change lives for the

Photos by D. Roberts Photography

better as evidenced by results and data our members have shared with us. We surveyed 3,746 Koko members across the U.S. and found the following: » 38% reported reductions in blood pressure » 43% reported reductions in cholesterol » 36% reported improved blood sugar levels » 78% reported improvements in mood since joining Koko » 81% reported reduced stress levels post Koko workouts » 77% report other health status improvements Every day an article or study is published touting the positive benefits of regular exercise and smart nutrition. Koko FitClub delivers on these promises. Unfortunately, many people living with chronic health conditions are intimidated and hesitate to enter large gyms with no direction. Koko FitClub offers special health tracks for people living with arthritis, diabetes, back problems, and even cancer recovery. EK: Is there anything else you would like to tell our readers? Patricia: I think the words of Dr. Deborah Ebert Long, MD, FCCP (Fellow of the College of Chest Physicians), who is triple board certified in pulmonology, thoracic surgery, and critical care medicine, express my feelings perfectly:

“I have been a Koko member for two years. On a personal level, I am amazed to have finally found a regimen that is motivating, effective, and sustainable. As a physician, I recommend Koko on a daily basis for health maintenance, disease management, and prevention. I am amazed at how the concept adapts to any age or fitness level. The constant feedback of performance into the system allows people to progress at whatever pace is appropriate and at a very low injury rate. Without asking people to commit enormous amounts of time or money, Koko provides health results that I have never seen equaled by any other intervention.” If you are new to fitness, ready to make a change, or need guidance and motivation, come try us, completely risk free. We perform fitness assessments at no charge as a way of allowing people to experience what makes us unique. Ours is a one-of-a-kind, proven approach to fitness that is done in as little as 30 minutes. Our system has worked for thousands of people nationwide, people just like you and me. Let us prove to you that fitness can be simple and how easy it can be to stick with our program. There is a better way, and it is Koko FitClub! As the saying goes, we really do have “Fit Figured Out.” Thanks for welcoming Koko to East Tennessee. The first three years have flown by, and we are looking forward to many more lives changed! My team and I look forward to getting you started on your journey today!

building a relationship with every couple and helping them create the vision for their perfect wedding. I would like to share the experience of one such couple. “Since the first day I met Kathy, venue owner and wedding c o o r d i n a t o r, I immediately felt the peace that I’d be well taken care of. I became acquainted with Springtree Farms at the Pink Bride Show in Nashville. My fiancé and I had already gone to three different venues but hadn’t really felt that feeling of ‘this is it.’ During the Bridal Show, I’ll never forget the enthusiasm and flexibility that Kathy and her crew greeted me with. I was limited with the time I could schedule for a venue tour, but Kathy promised that she would contact me by the end of that day and that she would work around our schedule to meet us for a tour of the property. On the day of our tour, my fiancé and I drove from Nashville and were late for our appointment by almost two hours. Talk about flexibility, Kathy was on the phone with me, helping us find our way when we got lost. When we arrived, Kathy greeted us with a warm welcome as if we weren’t late for our appointment. Our venue tour was great! Kathy didn’t focus on giving the sales talk about the venue. She was more interested in our relationship and our story. It wasn’t long before my fiancé and I had that feeling of ‘this is it!’ That day, we not only booked a venue and set our date, but we even got a mentor! Kathy prayed for us, for our wedding planning, and for our marriage before we left the property. Now we’re in the process of planning our wedding. Kathy has been by our side, contacting us and physically accompanying us to our vendor meetings. She has made sure that the vendors we are booking are ones she is familiar with, having seen their work. We’re very grateful for the personal relationship we made with the staff at Springtree Farms!” – Claire If you share my passion for creating and experiencing the perfect storybook wedding, I would love to help you write yours at Springtree Farms! Understandably, that’s the question most frequently asked by our clients. The answer is yes. In fact, we’re so confident you’ll lose inches that you’ll pay nothing if your treatment doesn’t produce results. Here’s how the Strawberry procedure works. At the beginning of your first treatment, measurements are taken of your treatment area. Completely painless, the treatment requires only 20 minutes, during which time you can read, watch TV, or just relax. The unique Strawberry Laser works by safely expelling water, fatty acids, and glycerol from your fat cells, causing them to shrink and ultimately be carried out of your body in your urine. How Women Are Planning Their Financial Futures W O M E N A R E approaching retirement

with greater confidence. Recent intriguing data indicates that women are planning their financial futures with some degree of pragmatism but also with considerable motivation. One of the key motivations is receiving financial advice. TIAA-CREF polled a sample of 1,000 men and women age 18+ for its 2014 Advice Matters Survey. It found 81% of women who had obtained financial advice were more likely to feel informed about retirement planning and savings than women who hadn’t. Additionally, 63% of women who had received advice felt confident that they were saving sufficiently for retirement.1 What kind of difference does financial advice make? A significant difference, it seems. 87% of the women surveyed said they had taken “positive steps” in their financial lives as a consequence. 64% altered spending habits and 53% took an organized approach to managing debt.1,2 In addition, 51% of the women had created an emergency fund and 57% had increased monthly saving rates since getting advice – and that leads us toward another interesting statistic.2 Are women more dedicated to retirement saving than men? In 2013, Vanguard discovered that 79% of women earning $50,000-75,000 were participating in its employer-sponsored retirement plans; only 60% of men in that income group were.2 Also, women in all income levels saved for retirement at rates ranging from 6-12% greater than men. The message that women need more money for (a potentially longer) retirement than men is being heard loud and clear.2 Women may put more importance on long-term care planning than men. Genworth’s 2014 Online Consumer Survey collected responses from 1,200+ U.S. adults age 18+, and 64% of women respondents said they were motivated to plan for long-term care needs versus 40% of men. Less than 30% of respondents had talked with their loved ones about planning for eldercare or aging issues.3 Advice promotes action. At Swofford Financial, we can help you set goals and run the numbers to estimate the level of retirement savings and income you will need. Planning your financial future starts with commitment and action. Call 865-690-0049 for a complimentary Retirement Strategy Session today.

Excess Versus Deficiency

T

HE HEALTH problems

of western nations, particularly the United States, and that of third world countries can be seen as opposites. Poor nutrition, both in quantity and quality, are the hallmark of underdeveloped nations. Malnutrition is a problem in the United States, too, but it is generally the result of excess rather than deficiency. Excess in America is the leading source of our health issues. When we take in any food, the body deals with it in one of three ways. The first option is to use it. It uses it for the building of new cells and also for producing energy for our thinking and activity. If the food cannot be used for this, either because it has an unusable makeup or because it is in excess of our energy demand, the next option is to eliminate it through digestive, excretory, and respiratory functions. The third option comes in to play when we exceed our eliminatory functions’ capacity. What is not used or eliminated is stored in the body. If this storage is continued during long periods of time, the excess begins to interfere with the organs’ abilities to function. Some of these organs are used for elimination (the second option), and our ability to eliminate excesses and toxins is reduced. At this point, we begin to experience the first symptoms of chronic illness. It may arise in countless ways, depending on our genetic tendencies and the amount and type of excess that we have taken in. At some point, we begin to give these symptoms

names, such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, etc. But whatever their nature, their origin is in the lifestyle and eating pattern of the person. The increase in consumption of animal food and simple sugars, along with the reduction of whole grains during the last century, has had a devastating effect on our health. It has come at a tremendous cost, both in dollars and in human suffering. Although much has been said in the media about diet and health, most of the resources invested in research have been aimed at trying to find a magic bullet for whatever affliction is being studied. But what about natural magic bullets? Good, sound nutrition, exercise, good sleep, and staying hydrated are a must for building a good immune system and staying healthy. Staying alkaline by eating a variety of vegetables creates health, as well as decreasing obesity that is definitely on the rise in America. According to the CDC, the national average for adolescent obesity increased from 5% in 1980 to 21% in 2012, and according to the National Diabetes Educational Program (NDEP), losing 5 to 7% of body weight can prevent or delay debilitating diseases such as Type II diabetes. Healthy lifestyles are a must in decreasing this trend of obesity and thwarting our health issues. Excess and deficiency can both be a problem when it comes to our health. Lack of proper nutrition can negatively impact our health, as well as eating excessively. Balance is the key.

PROGRES S I V E

HOUNDMOUTH • MARCH 6 • 8 PM • BIJOU THEATRE

T

HAT FIRST November 2011 night, when it all fell together at the Green House, was nothing more complicated than four friends playing music, armed with something to drink and a curiosity about what might happen. They were the generation who has come of age in the new economy, already adept at shuffling jobs and get-bys, firmly acclimated to the diminished expectations that come with growing up somewhere the rest of the world assumes is nowhere. Which, in this case, is New Albany, Indiana. Houndmouth, then, knew each other

from around. Matt Myers and Zak Appleby had played in cover bands together for years, schooled in blues and classic rock and Motown, toughened by indifferent audiences and the clatter of empty bottles. Matt and Katie Toupin had worked as an acoustic duo for three years, when she wasn’t on the road tending to a straight job. Katie and Shane Cody had gone to high school together, before Shane disappeared off to Chicago and New York to study audio engineering. In the beginning it was Shane and Matt who’d started knocking around at first, just drums and guitar, once Shane got home and free of a brief bluegrass flirtation.

contact lenses or glasses for years or have never had to depend upon vision correction devices until now, if you have been experiencing difficulties in focusing at near, you have options. Traditionally, reaching the age of 40 has meant either wearing reading glasses, bi-focal glasses, or monofit contact lenses. Multi-focal contact lenses hit the market in the mid-‘90s and have been much improved since those early days. Today’s soft multi-focal contact lenses provide acceptable vision for many but leave others with blurred, distorted vision. Astigmatism poses a unique problem for presbyopic contact lens wearers. Now we have a much better option for those who have either given up on contact lenses or have not been happy with the vision or comfort they currently get from their contact lenses. Duette Progressives are the latest generation of hybrid contact lenses that combine the comfort of soft lenses with the clear vision of rigid gas permeable lenses. Duette Progressive’s rigid center delivers crisp, clear vision at all distances to let you focus on near objects, as well as enhancing intermediate and distance vision. With Duette Progressive, you can live focused… any time… any distance! The primary requirements to be successful with contact lenses are clear vision, comfort, and health. Duette Progressives provide crystal clear vision at all distances, advanced materials that are highly permeable to oxygen and block more than 80% of UVA and 95% of UVB radiation, and are very comfortable for all day wear. For optimal success, it is best to find an eye doctor who is very experienced in fitting these types of lenses. Dr. Brent Fry of Premier Eyecare has fit more than a thousand patients with hybrid contact lenses during the past 10 years. He is currently one of a few select doctors in the country who is on the Synergeyes advisory board to help other doctors around the country learn how to fit these unique lenses. He has also been recently selected as a beta tester for a new hybrid contact lens developed for keratoconus. His experience and passion for fitting contact lenses provides an excellent opportunity for anyone in the Knoxville area looking to be free from glasses. A Patient’s Guide to Dental Implants

Health

Missing Teeth? Discover how dental implants can be your lifetime solution

A DENTAL IMPLANT is an artificial tooth

root that is placed under the gums, in the bone, to hold a replacement tooth. This new root can be used to replace a single tooth or to secure a bridge or denture. When a patient looses a tooth, they not only loose the tooth itself, but also the root that held it in place. The implant Pablo Foncea, DMD takes the place of the lost root. Once it is secured into the bone, then a crown is created and attached to replace the tooth. The basis for modern dental implants is a process called osseointegration, where materials, like titanium, fuse to the bone. Because of the integration, implants can last for decades. They are strong, natural looking and feeling, and not susceptible to decay.

Whether it is used to replace a tooth lost during an accident or several teeth lost to periodontal disease, an implant can restore natural function and appearance. Dental implants provide a stability that is only rivaled by original teeth. Whether it is used to replace a tooth lost during an accident or several teeth lost to periodontal disease, an implant can restore natural function and appearance. With an implant-supported denture, patients can eat and chew with confidence and without embarrassment. At Sequoyah Dental Arts, our state-of-the-art laser technology reduces the potential for infection, speeds recovery, and improves the final results. Today, having an implant placed is much less invasive than it used to be. If you are interested in your option for replacing missing teeth, or you’re looking for a new dental home, I invite you to contact us today to schedule an appointment. ALABAMA SHAKES March 21 • 8 PM • Tennessee Theatre THE STORY of the Alabama Shakes begins in a high school psychology class in Athens, Alabama. Brittany Howard, who had started playing guitar a few years earlier, approached Zac Cockrell and asked if he wanted to try making music together. “I just knew that he played bass and that he wore shirts with cool bands on them that nobody had heard of,” said Howard. They started to meet up after school and write songs sitting on Howard’s floor. “It had that rootsy feel, but there was some out-there stuff,” said Cockrell. “David Bowie-

style things, prog-rock, lots of different stuff. We started to come across our own sound a little bit, though it’s evolved a lot since then.” Steve Johnson worked at the only music store in town, and Howard knew he played the drums. She invited him to a party where, she said, “he met everybody from our side of the tracks.” The three young musicians began working together, further expanding their style and approach. “Steve is kind of a punk-metal drummer, so we embraced that edge he brings to everything he does,” said Howard.

and pricing new spring arrivals for Veronica G Boutique and entering them into our inventory, one of my associates stated, “Most customers have little or no idea all the different tasks that are required to be per formed for a boutique like ours!” She had spent more than 16 years in the fashion sales industry, where corporate staffs handled virtually everything from the buying and shipping to pricing and inventory control. This same associate had joined me on a buying trip to Atlanta last fall and witnessed how overwhelming, exciting, and exhausting the buying process can be. Many times we have had a customer say, “I don’t know who your buyer is, but she certainly knows what women our age want. I love your selections.” That is when she realizes she IS talking to the buyer! So just how do we decide at market what fashions to order for our boutique? About two to three times a year we attend a show at the Atlanta Apparel Mart, where there are national and international exhibitors with showrooms and/ or temporary booths where new merchandise is displayed. There we are introduced to the latest trends by visiting with suppliers and attending fashion shows and seminars. So how do an owner and her assistant make choices from those thousands of garments, jewelry, and accessories? First, it has to be unique. (No “cookie cutter” looks allowed.) We ask ourselves, “Would our customers like it?” “Is the item of the quality that our customers expect and deserve from Veronica G Boutique?” Those decisions are made easier because of our individual personal service with each customer at Veronica G Boutique. Because of the relationships we have with each of our customers, we learn their style, fit, color preferences, etc. In future issues of Everything Knoxville, we will introduce you to some of our suppliers and share with you their interesting stories of how their companies began and how they bring their items to market. As always, we thank you for helping us make the right selections for you and all of our loyal customers.

We’ve already sold nearly 3,500 jars in the past 14 months and are the number one retail sales outlet in the country for the manufacturer. You can simply serve it over cream cheese with crackers or use as a glaze/marinade for any type of meat, seafood, or chicken. It’s gluten-free and all natural with no preservatives. It’s simply delicious. We’ve also added a new garden section in back of the store where we feature a wide selection of garden and house flags, flower pots and planters, metal and boxwood topiaries, bird feeders, bird houses, and so much more. Look for this area to continue to grow. Cranberry Hollow… your treasure trove of gifts for all occasions!

Sarah McLachlan The Shine On Tour March 21 • 8 PM Knoxville Civic Auditorium SARAH MCLACHLAN is one of the most celebrated singer songwriters in entertainment with more than 40 million albums sold worldwide. She is an eight-time Juno Award winner and a three-time Grammy Award winner. McLachlan’s landmark fifth album, the 10x-platinum Surfacing, contained two Grammy Award-winning tracks: “Building a Mystery” and “Last Dance.” In addition to her personal artistic efforts, she founded the Lilith Fair tour showcasing female musicians, which raised more than $7 million for local and national charities during its three years. In 2002, she founded her nonprofit organization the Sarah McLachlan School

of Music. The school provides free afterschool music education for at-risk and underserved kids who otherwise would have no access to music programming. From an early age, music provided Sarah with the tools she needed to navigate the challenges she faced in her life, so she recognizes how important it is for every child to have those same opportunities. McLachlan’s latest album, Shine On, was released earlier this year. It explores her personal journey during the last three years navigating love, loss, and change. Shine On celebrates the human ability to grow from our experiences, thrive, and shine on.

What Is Your Style?

H

AVE YOU EVER wondered how we just seem

to know what you will like when you visit The Lily Pad? One thing that’s most helpful to us is observing your type of style. Even though the lines may cross over a bit and you can certainly be a little of four basic styles, each seem to hold true. It’s meant to be fun, so don’t get in a tizzy, but see if you find your style here. Are you the modern romantic or maybe the traditional, sporty, natural? Perhaps a little dramatic and contemporary or just a true classic?

THE MODERN ROMANTIC gal is soft and feminine, always wanting to look nice but never wanting to stand out in a crowd. She can be comfortable in a tailored suit as long as she can add a ruffled blouse to soften the look. Her hair may be funky and fun, but most of all, she’ll find her style and is very comfortable with herself and her feminine style. THE TRADITIONAL, sporty, and natural you is the preppy one who loves the outdoors and is trend aware, likes coordinated and matched looks, and has your own personal style that you’re rigid about maintaining. You’ll like knowing you’re well-dressed even when you’re casual, like Martha Stewart or maybe Jennifer Aniston.

IF YOU’RE THE CLASSIC dresser,

you’ll love things that last and have a history. You’ll love better goods and ones with the most luxury you can afford. You’re timeless and love status and collections; no ruffles, no nonsense clothing, often in head-to-toe color because you want the complete picture. You’re self-confident and know who you are. Think Diane Keaten, always in her signature, all over black or white.

FINALLY, THERE’S THE DRAMATIC,

contemporary type, a fashion leader who likes to be first. She’s free with her styling and throws clothes together with ease. When she thinks western, it’s not cowboy – it’s west coast! She wants to see and be seen when she enters a room, because she knows she looks good. Cher was the outstanding dramatic girl, now maybe being replaced by Paris Hilton. Do you recognize your style? Let The Lily Pad team assist in still another way as together we find just the right look for you!

Tax Tips and New IRA Rules Can Save You Money YOU’VE WORKED hard and saved diligently

in your 401k and IRA throughout the years. Perhaps the time is drawing near to take the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) at your age 70 1/2, and you’re faced with the higher tax bill this creates. Unfortunately, the additional income can create increased Medicare Part B & Part D premiums, plus increase the amount of your Social Security benefits that are subject to tax. Here are a few tax tips to soften the impact of your RMD’s: » For charitable giving, have your RMD paid directly to the charity according to the Qualified Charitable Distribution rules. The RMD is then excluded from your income. This is especially beneficial for retirees who do not itemize and receive no tax benefit for their charitable giving. Be aware that Congress lets this tax break lapse each year, and we have to wait to see if it will be extended (which historically it has). Structure your charitable giving to take advantage of this tax break. » New for 2015! Once you reach age 70 1/2, consider using a Qualified Longevity Annuity Contract (QLAC) to remove 25% of your IRA (up to$125,000 per person) out of the RMD annual calculation. RMD’s aren’t required to begin on this portion of funds until age 85. A few other IRA tax-savings tips: » Consider defusing the RMD tax time-bomb with a multi-year strategy of Roth conversions. Each year, convert a portion of your IRA to a Roth being mindful to not push yourself into the next tax bracket. » Review your IRA beneficiary forms to ensure that both primary and contingent natural persons are named to preserve Stretch IRA tax rules for heirs. » New for 2015! The IRS has issued a ruling that specifically allows the after-tax portion of a 401k to be rolled into a tax-free Roth IRA. This is great news for people who may make too much income to contribute directly to a Roth IRA. Learn more about these and other IRA tax savings tips. Call today for a complimentary appointment, or join us on March 25th from 11:30 to 12:30 for our free Lunch ‘n Learn at Lakeside Tavern.

Ijams Hike-A-Thon Helps Beat Back the Winter Blues

B

RISK AIR fills the lungs, and

the brilliant blue of the clear winter sky provides a vivid backdrop for the outline of the mountains on the horizon. The occasional snow flurry enchants children and adults alike who don mittens and run outside to watch the soft flakes fall. Honestly, I used to hate this time of year. As someone whose nose is perpetually cold, who is terrified of the thought of icy roads, and who just looks downright awful in a knitted cap, winter was the bane of my existence. I am a creature of the sun, and the short days and frigid nights turned me into a frozen shell of a human being. A roommate of mine used to joke that she lived with two different people: a jovial, adventurous individual in the warm weather months and a grouchy, blanket-clad monster in the dead of winter. I will admit, she wasn’t far off. A couple of things happened in my life that changed my outlook on winter. First, I moved back to the South, a beautiful land whose winters are far more palatable than the Great Frozen North. (Ok, so I’ve only lived as far north as the Mid-Atlantic.) Second, I made a conscious decision to spend more time outdoors with the idea that perhaps I would overcome my aversion to the cold. I invested

in some good thermal underwear, a pair of thick gloves, and a (slightly more attractive) knit cap, and I set out to become a naturelover for all seasons. What I discovered was a whole new kind of outdoor experience. The relative quiet of the forest in winter provided a peaceful setting for reflection and exploration. The barren trees that I once saw as dead and bleak opened up beautiful vistas that were hidden the rest of the year. I began to imagine them as sleeping giants whose leafless branches revealed bird nests, squirrel dens, and other treasures hidden by the summer foliage. I discovered the numerous winter residents of the forest that flitted through the bushes and scurried along the ground. Even during the coldest stretches of February and March, the Lenten roses and the first pale blooms of witch hazel reminded me that even when you begin to feel like you may never be warm again, spring is never very far off. If you, too, are looking to become a winter naturalist, or if you are just desperate for the first glimpses of spring, Ijams Nature Center has the answer for you. Our third annual Ijams Hike-A-Thon kicks off on March 1 and runs through the end of the month. The purpose of the Hike-A-Thon is to get people out on

the trails to explore Ijams and the 1,000 acres of South Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness. You can hike, run, bike, or roll - however you like to get around. It’s the perfect way to meet fitness goals, spend quality time with friends and family, or just get “back to nature.” Do you have a group of coworkers that is looking for a fun way to stay fit? Have a social group that is looking for a great way to give back to the community? Are you looking to take your book club’s show on the road? Sign up as a team, and achieve your goals together! You can even track your mileage and fundraising and compete against other teams. In addition, Ijams will host a series of fun guided hikes, workshops, and social events throughout the month of March to celebrate the Hike-A-Thon. It all kicks off on Sunday, March 1, with a Pint Night event at Ijams. Everyone who is registered by then is entered to win a pair of Keen hiking boots, so don’t wait to sign up as an individual or as a team. The registration fee is $20. You can collect pledges from friends and family to help raise additional money for Ijams. Proceeds from the Hike-A-Thon help us create amazing outdoor experiences for everyone who visits, so embrace the stark beauty of the season, and join the Hike-A-Thon today. You might even catch sight of me on the trails with my frozen red nose and my giant wool cap. Be sure to give a friendly wave. You can register to participate in t h e I j a m s H i k e - A -T h o n o n l i n e a t www.ijams.org/hike-a-thon. Jenny Newby is development assistant at Ijams. March 2015 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

Oriental Rug Washing The Best Just Got Better THANKS TO your overwhelming response,

Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning is nearing completion of upgrades to its West Knoxville-based Oriental rug washing boutique, where we pamper your rugs. We will soon have twice the capacity that we previously had and have made added improvements to our proprietary 11-step Oriental rug washing process. Most Oriental rug customers think that the first priority of Oriental rug washing is to “clean” their valuable rugs. Well, that’s only partially correct, as the first priority should be “safety.” Let me explain. Oriental rugs are far different from their wall-towall cousins, which are machine manufactured to exact standards using synthetic fiber and color fast dyes. Oriental rugs, on the other hand, are usually hand woven using natural fibers and organic dyes, including, believe it or not, tea and vegetable dyes. While beautiful to admire, Oriental rugs cannot be cleaned using conventional carpet cleaning methods. These cleaning systems can actually permanently damage your valuable rugs. Successful Oriental rug washing combines two important items – decades of experience and a state-of-the-art multi-step washing system, using specially treated water, that significantly reduces the potential damage to your rugs. Simply put, there is no replacement for experience and a proven washing system.

5 Trends That Rev Up a Garage

O

NE OF the fastest growing trends

in home improvements is renovating the garage. With the garage often the largest room in the house and the least expensive to remodel, it’s the perfect area to expand a home’s usable living space. Top trends in garage enhancements and organization, as seen by PremierGarage of Knoxville, are: Coating the Garage Floor With garages becoming an extension of our inside space, finishing the floor extends a home’s usable living space. Not only does a floor coating improve the garage’s overall look and feel, but it also provides protection and makes it easier to clean, significantly reducing the amount of dirt and grease that’s tracked into the home.

With the garage often the largest room in the house and the least expensive to remodel, it’s the perfect area to expand a home’s usable living space. Including Overhead Storage While a typical two-car garage is about 400 square feet, this translates to several hundred cubic feet if you think vertically. Overhead storage is easily accessed and takes advantage of every inch available. Adding Garage Cabinetry for Storage In addition to maximizing storage space, wallmounted cabinets provide a clean and uncluttered look that also protect its contents by keeping out dust and household pests. Hanging cabinets off the floor allows to easily clean the floor. Popular cabinet finishes include wood-grain, powder-coated, and stainless steel. Using Slatwall with Hooks and Fixtures Slatwall with various hooks, baskets, and bins organizes tools, athletic equipment, and other items while still keeping them easy to access. Again, think vertically to get items off the floor. The right side of the garage is ideal for slatwall, because it keeps the left side clear for drivers exiting vehicles. Creating a Hobby Nook Today’s new homes were designed for larger garages. In fact, garages are larger than they were 20 years ago. And with the extra space, garages aren’t just for cars anymore. Whether it’s a man cave, children’s play area, or an artist’s studio, the garage is often serving a duel purpose. Whatever purpose you want your garage to serve, learn more about garage organization by visiting www.PremierGarage.com/Knoxville.

What Do YOU Notice? H

OW MANY of us can relate to a

heightened sense of awareness? For the expecting mom and dad, it may seem everywhere you go there are other parents-to-be. When we are passionate about something, we tend to notice everything about that subject. For my husband, he is passionate about floors. Yes, floors. You may laugh, and sometimes I do, too, but since we got into the deep-cleaning business, he notices every single floor we encounter. Wherever we are, he examines and takes note. Imagine conversation starters like these: “This floor is identical to the one we did at so-and-so’s,” or “It looks as though an acid wash has damaged the integrity of this floor… that’s unfortunate.” More than once I have witnessed him pull out his pocket knife and scrape up shavings of grime within grout lines. Occasionally he will even present the shavings to the business owner and ask if he would like some help dealing with it. The owner is so surprised as to what their floors actually look like (or that someone actually showed them!) that sometimes a friendship is born. young enough to keep up with my very active college aged kids but old enough to remember a time when businesses placed a high level of emphasis on customer service. Unfortunately, many of us often feel those days are behind us. When my family launched Fish Window Cleaning here in the Knoxville, Blount, and Loudon County areas, we made a decision to provide the level of customer service that exceeded our customers’ expectations. A level of customer service that our customers thought no longer existed today. Window cleaning is not just a job to us – it’s our profession. Each of our technicians is highly trained and skilled to provide you with perfectly clean windows, whether at your place of business or in the tranquil environment of your home. All we leave behind is a level of customer service that is designed to exceed your expectations and perfectly clean windows. But windows are not all we do. Fish Window Cleaning also provides these additional cleaning services for both residential and commercial customers: » Storm windows » Skylights » Mirrors » Screens » Gutters » Window sills » Ceiling fans » Chandeliers » Pressure washing We’ll even help you take down your Christmas decorations, and we also offer annual maintenance packages. If you have windows, gutters, screens, ceiling fans, skylights, window sills, mirrors, and chandeliers that require attention or pressure washing needs, why give up your kid’s soccer match or your golf outing? Also, forget about standing on that wobbly and unsafe ladder. D

ID SOMEONE bless you with a beautiful orchid? Mass marketing has hit the orchid world! Among the most popular orchids for gifting are cattleyas (pronounced “KATlee-uh”). Another favorite gift orchid is the genus phalaenopsis (pronounced “fail-enNOP-sis”). This orchid is nicknamed the moth orchid because of the shape of its blooms. Both come in a variety of sizes and colors, are readily available in grocery stores and garden centers, and can look just as good in your home as the store. In spite of the fact that my friends think I can grow anything with little regard for plant rules, I will confess that I managed to kill the first two orchids I was given years ago by simply not consulting the experts.

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE March 2015

The phalaenopsis, or moth orchid, is a favorite gift orchid and is readily available in supermarkets and garden centers. It comes in a variety of colors and exotic patterns, and with care, the long-lived blooms can be enjoyed for weeks.

Orchids are epiphytes or air plants that have developed specialized water-storage organs. They like to attach to moist tree bark in a tropical atmosphere. Thus, they have their own set of recommended growing practices. The American Orchid Society (www.aos.org) gives great advice on keeping your new friend healthy and blooming. Both cattleyas and phalaenopsis appreciate a lot of air movement and a long day of filtered, bright light. They don’t appreciate direct sunlight but do thrive in temperatures between 60 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Living in an east-facing window usually makes them happiest. Both orchids should be kept in free-draining growing media. The AOS recommends even moisture, although allowing the media to dry slightly can be beneficial. I recommend you water your orchid once a week, at most. Be sure the water can drain and does not stand in the pot. The pot it came in probably has no drainage, so your job is to not overwater. You can also create drainage holes. Orchids should be watered in the morning. Because the water should run through the pot, place the plants in the sink. Tepid water is recommended. Also, do not use salt-softened or distilled water. Let the water run through the plant for a minute or so. Be sure to let the plant drain completely. If any water gets trapped in the leaves, use a paper towel to blot. This will help avoid crown rot. If you’ve read that you should just lay some ice cubes around the roots, I have found that generally works, also. As for fertilizer, there are a number of mixtures and brands, but the AOS recommends that any fertilizer you use should not contain urea. Their website discusses recommended methods. If you want to try a home fertilizer brew, you might try your morning brew. I dump the dregs of my coffee pot into my orchids once a week, all year around. For an average pot with a five-inch top measurement, about 1/4 cup of these leavings works best. Doing this will negate the job of

occasional fertilizing, as the dregs give your new friend all the encouragement it needs to do its best. I use “high test” (caffeine) coffee leavings, but a friend is using decaf on hers. It will be interesting to see which formula produces the best results. When orchids have completed their flowering cycle, it’s time to cut the flower stem to encourage a new bloom on a healthy plant. Again, the AOS has a number of tips about getting your orchid to re-bloom. For phalaenopsis, they recommend cutting the flower stem a half inch above the first or second node. Be sure your pruners have been disinfected. The plant will most often grow another flower stem and re-bloom. Repotting may be necessary every one to three years if the plant becomes root-bound or the media needs replenished. Don’t be tempted to substitute the loose medium that came with your orchid with your favorite soil mix. Orchids like orchid mixes that drain well, otherwise they may decline to the point of no return. Now sit back and enjoy! Carol Burdett is a Master Gardener with the Cumberland County Master Gardener Association. The Tennessee Master Gardener Program is a volunteer service program that trains and certifies volunteers in the science of horticulture and gardening. MG volunteers provide community service through county Extension offices. For more information, visit www.mastergardener.tennessee.edu or contact your local county UT Extension Office. The University of Tennessee Gardens, located in Knoxville, Crossville, and Jackson, are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public except during designated special events. For more information, visit www.utgardens.tennessee.edu. Photo by P. March in the Garden

S

PRING IS coming!

I can feel it in the air, and so can my yard. It doesn’t get dark quite so early, and there are swollen leaf nodes on many of my shrubs. March is full of promise! How are things going in your yard? We have not had the extreme cold of last winter (knock on wood), so hopefully you haven’t had much damage. We are also getting some nice warm days, so let’s get started on your “to-do” list. ›› March is the month of 4 P’s: planning, preparing, pruning, and planting. Let’s start with planning. Walk around your yard, then put together your ideas for the year. Do you need to add trees and shrubs? Maybe you would like to downsize your water and chemical hungry lawn in favor of more planting beds. Maybe you want to get rid of some planting beds and have a bigger yard! Whatever your ideas are, this is the best time to get them finalized. ›› Preparing is the second P. Start with a good cleanup. Remove sticks and leaves, and cut back dried up perennials (except verbena and salvia) from the beds. This will help to prevent fungus and insects on your spring growth. Next you can amend your soil with aged manure, compost, and/or topsoil. These can be tilled in if you have a desire to play with mechanical equipment or mixed in with a shovel or pitchfork. (Truthfully, you can also put it on top and not mix it, but you run the danger of it washing away.) You also need to continue pulling the weeds (and applying a pre-emergent) until the weather is warm enough to apply an herbicide such as Roundup. ›› Speaking of amending your soil, let me pass on a little info: it is fine to dump your old containers into your flower beds as a way to recycle the soil, but potting soil is not the kind of soil that you want to fill beds with. It is too light and will wash away in the first storm. Additionally, never use garden soil in containers. It is too heavy. Potting soil is for pots, garden soil is for gardens. ›› If you have an area of your yard that has been a problem, this is a good time to do a soil test to see if your pH or nutrient levels are wonky. The tests are free, and we have them here. Results are usually back in two to four weeks, and then you can address the issues by applying the recommended products. ›› Pruning is the third P, and it is the one

that gets the most people in trouble. Please do not go out and just start whacking. Go online or give us a call before you prune, because you can cause some serious ugliness! ›› Grasses and groundcovers can be trimmed back now. L e ave a few i n c h e s o n ornamental grasses to protect the tender new shoots coming up. Smaller grasses and ground covers can be trimmed by running over them with your lawn mower on its highest setting or using a string trimmer. ›› Planting is the fourth P and the most fun. You can plant cool season vegetables ( broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, lettuce, onions, and potatoes) and start tender annual and vegetable seeds inside to get a head start on spring. You can plant pansies and violas and enjoy blooms while other people are waiting on annuals and perennials to start. You can also plant dormant trees and shrubs and cold tolerant perennials like helleborus, candytuft, and

Home

creeping phlox later in the month. Don’t jump the gun and plant tender plants too early, however. Our average last frost is not until mid-April! ›› Like me, many of you have bulbs coming up now. Do not cut back the plant as soon as it finishes blooming! The bulb needs that foliage to store up nutrients for the next bloom season, so wait until it has turned yellow. Adding bone meal or a bulb fertilizer will give bulbs a boost. ›› Late winter and early spring are the most important times for feeding our feathered friends. Birds don’t have much natural food available this time of year, so they may keep you busy filling feeders. It is also time to get nesting boxes ready for new bird families. Clean them out and make sure the boxes are in good shape. That’s it for this month. We have a really wonderful workshop schedule this spring, so sign up early for classes you would like to attend. Let’s get ready for spring!

Advantages of SingleStory Living AFFORDABILITY and single-story design

make the ranch style home one of the most prolific residential home designs in America, but today’s ranch house plans are anything but simple and plain. The latest designs come in all shapes and sizes to meet your needs, budget, and lifestyle. You can expect to discover flexible rooms, open kitchen, living, and dining areas, extended outdoor living spaces, tons of amenities, and simple, yet elegant exterior features to reflect various architectural styles. One-story homes offer more flexibility in the design of the interiors than multi-level homes, because a combined space can serve multiple functions. One-story living spaces allow for an interior design that has vaulted ceilings, dramatic windows, and the use of skylights to add a spacious feel. They almost always have an open living space that combines the dining room, living room, and kitchen to create a comfortable and cozy place for families to gather. One-story houses are also generally more efficient to heat and cool, saving you money and making you more comfortable year-round. Circulation in a onestory home is more fluid, because all the rooms flow into each other. One-story homes also do not require regular physical taxing use of steps and stairways, granting access to the entire home for those with limited mobility. Additionally, thoughtful layouts make households easier to maintain. For example, bedrooms are located close to the laundry facilities, greatly minimizing the work and time of transporting laundry loads to and fro. Kitchens are also located nearer to the bedrooms than other general spaces with immediate access to the garage. Ultimately, a one-story house is more convenient. With a two-story house, you inevitably want what’s on the other floor. Having a one-story house makes it easier to keep an eye on children,

and noise is less of a problem when there’s no one overhead. If you need to make changes down the road, having an open, flexible floor plan will make that an easy and affordable remodel. It is undeniable that many homeowners building their new dream home are looking for a long-term place to settle, and what good is space if it becomes too difficult to access? Many people are looking to the future, building dream homes in which they can live for the remainder of their lives. These people want enough space they can access independently. Typically no one puts in the time and effort to build a home they will only occupy for a short period of time. Keeping this in mind, it’s important to consider that there is a trend forming in dream home construction – the one-story home is gaining rapid popularity not just for baby boomers, but for all generations. There are a great many things to consider when building; however, builder Jenny Blalock’s specialty is helping to take the

stress out of the process and making your dream home a reality. At Luxe Homes & Design, they style your home Jenny Blalock General a r o u n d y o u r Licensed Contractor life. They work closely with you to decide which floor plan is right for you, your family, and your lifestyle. They help you discover what design will work best to create the home of your dreams. Discover the All Dry Roofing Difference I F YO U thought that

all we do is install great, worry-free residential and commercial roofs, you’d be half right. That’s because for more than two decades, All Dry Roofing has installed the highest quality roofing all throughout East Tennessee, remaining a Better Business Bureau complaint-free business. But what you may not know is that All Dry Roofing also installs high-quality siding, gutters, and insulation. If you’re in the market for roofing, siding, gutters, or insulation, we would like to invite you to discover the All Dry Roofing experience for yourself. We invite you to visit our recently remodeled showroom to learn just how we can help you update, replace, or repair your home’s or business’s roof, siding, gutters, or insulation. Also, for a limited time, take advantage of our 20% discount on R-19, blown-in insulation. Here’s an All Dry Roofing tip for March: Did you know that your home’s roof is its first line of defense against the searing sun, rain, wind, hail, ice, and snow, and it’s exposed to more potentially damaging elements than any other area of your home’s exterior? The best way to protect your home is to keep your roof in good, sound condition and take corrective action at the first sign of a problem, before it becomes an even bigger problem that might damage your home’s interior. As owner of All Dry Roofing, I personally meet with every homeowner. I conduct a thorough evaluation of your home’s roof, including roof structure, existing roof materials, flashings, gutters, vent pipes, loose or rusting fasteners, and examine your roof from your home’s attic for signs of leaks before making any recommendations. Every roof we install is not only backed up by our guarantee, but all work is performed in a manner to ensure that the roofing manufacturer’s warranty isn’t voided by failure to adhere to required specifications. We further protect your home by using ice and water barriers and lifetime warrantied roof vent boots at no additional charge. We also offer convenient financing. Quality materials and workmanship at affordable prices – that’s the All Dry Roofing difference.

At Consign To Design, We Never Stop Designing

I

CAN’T BEGIN to tell

you just how much we enjoy Consign To Design, but even more, how much we love our customers. I guess that’s why we are so committed to enhancing our clients’ experience, whether you are a consigner, designer, or retail customer. David and I, along with our great team of associates, invest a great deal of energy transforming our showrooms into galleries that has many of our customers asking just where our consignment area is, thinking that they are in a new furniture showroom. We can’t begin to describe to you how gratifying that is to hear, knowing that our displays and room vignettes have created that lasting impression. Much of our time at Consign To Design is invested in creating just that impression. After hours we spend a great deal of time discussing amongst ourselves, as well as some very trusted mentors, just how we can improve your experience. We also make road trips, or hop on a plane, to consult with the owners of other upscale furniture consignment boutiques to share ideas on how to enhance your consignment and shopping venture. We’ve continued to improve the experience by reorganizing

portions of our dual showrooms, as well as by creating vignettes throughout our galleries to help you visualize how our furniture, rugs, art, and home décor items might appear in your home. We will also be enhancing our online capabilities in the future to allow shoppers to view many of our available items both in the convenience of their homes and with proposed mobile apps. In addition, we will be showing you just how our furniture is being used by our customers in their homes. Also, don’t forget our great line of Blackberry House Paints that allow you to repurpose existing furniture for a small fraction of the cost of new. Blackberry House Paints also allow you to create the same look as chalk paints but with enhanced performance and without the chalk, VOCs, and sanding. Not sure how it works? Sign up for one of our convenient workshops, or we’ll paint for you. At Consign To Design, we never stop designing a better experience for you.

The inspector’s lab analysis revealed a high concentration of microscopic cellulose particles in her indoor air. It turned out that during a recent installation of new light fixtures, the particles from cellulose insulation in her attic had fallen into her home. Her allergy doctor confirmed that a fire retardant chemical in the insulation particles was the source of the rash. The IAQ inspector made recommendations to replace it, and her face was beautiful again! Health symptoms that may be caused by microscopic air particles are coughing, asthma attacks, skin irritations, sinus/eye/lung infections, and other allergic/sensitivity reactions. Open Up Your Home’s Outdoor Living Spaces

A

RE YOU RE ADY to let the

outdoors in? The sun is getting stronger, and the days are getting longer. Before you know it, summer will be here, and with it will come the endless ways to have fun right in your own backyard. Yet are you really enjoying your outdoor spaces to their full potential? In most parts of the country, if your outdoor space does not include retractable screen solutions, then the answer is most likely no. Here’s why. Homeowners across the country are making significant investments creating outdoor “rooms” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially made to be weather-proof. However, the hot afternoon sun and biting insects often keep homeowners from enjoying their new outdoor spaces. Retractable screens provide an answer to these problems. By combining indoor and outdoor spaces, these screen solutions enhance and promote the outdoor living experience. They provide shade and allow people to enjoy being outdoors during hot summer days, extending the time spent on patios in areas where there are lots of biting bugs that come out in the evenings. Large motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of a building, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. The best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish your views or your home’s aesthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many of the retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. Increasing in popularity are different custom color and wood grain finishes that help merge the screens with your home’s existing interior or exterior color schemes. The screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and can be connected to your general building automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection is required. For more information about all of your retractable screen options, call 865-919-1615 or visit www. tennesseescreens.com.

Infants who live in moldy homes are three times more likely to develop asthma by age seven. Jeremy & Ashley Akers Approximately 60% of the air you breathe in your home comes from your basement or crawlspace. Thus, it’s important to monitor those mold conducive environments for your health and your home’s health. According to the Cincinnati Childhood Allergy and Air Pollution Study, early life exposure to indoor mold seems to play a critical role in childhood asthma development. Genetic factors are also important to consider in asthma risk, since infants whose parents have an allergy or asthma are at the greatest risk. This study should motivate expectant parents, especially if they have a family history of allergy or asthma, to correct water damage and reduce the mold burden in their homes to protect the respiratory health of their children. History

BY LILA WILSON, DIRECTOR OF EVENTS, KNOX AREA RESCUE MINISTRIES

Knox Area Rescue Ministries: 55 Years of Service

O

N DECEMBER 8, 1960, five local pastors

finalized the formation of the Knoxville Union Rescue Mission. These good men identified a critical need in those days of ministering to a growing population of homeless people, a need that unfortunately still exists today. The founders of this early rescue mission established their first ministry center in the heart of the downtown area on Fifth Avenue. They then began to raise funds for the hiring of staff to provide shelter and food services in a compelling Christian ministry that addressed not only the physical needs of folks who found themselves lost and forgotten in a busy world, but also their spiritual and emotional needs. They believed their services would help those less fortunate to find personal restoration with God, their families, and their community. Today the organization now known as Knox Area Rescue Ministries (KARM) serves individuals from 15 surrounding counties. Since its inception in 1960, the organization has established programs and services designed to treat addictions, provide educational assistance, train people for successful employment, and assist homeless men, women, and children in rebuilding their lives. KARM’s mission isn’t to superficially address issues of homelessness and poverty but to actually rehabilitate the lives of individuals and families. Rescue + Relationships = Restoration. These three words represent both the promise of healing and the power of hope at Knox Area Rescue Ministries. Services are designed to provide the less fortunate in the community with the 58

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE March 2015

hope, education, and skills necessary to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty and to achieve a better life for themselves and their families. KARM serves nearly 1,000 meals per day and shelters nearly 400 men, women, and children each night. Yet the ultimate goal is to move people from hopelessness and desperation to a place of stability and hope. It is a mission straight from the heart and soul. Each and every day for the last 55 years, KARM has opened its doors to those most vulnerable and desperate among us. The success of KARM’s services can be numerically measured in numbers of meals and shelter nights provided, but perhaps a more accurate reading can be found in the hopeful, uplifted eyes of the thousands of men, women, and children who have had their lives changed for the better through KARM throughout the decades. In order to successfully provide these historic services through the years, KARM has always been totally reliant on money received from individual donors, foundation grants, thrift store sales, and special events. One great example of KARM’s event fundraisers is the upcoming 13th Annual KARM Dragon Boat Festival to be held on Saturday, June 20, at The Cove at Concord Park in

West Knoxville starting at 8 am. This event is a great way for the public to financially support a worthy cause and have a good time doing so. In this Dragon Boat Festival, community groups, organizations, churches, and businesses register teams to compete in the boat race, with the goal of each team seeking pledges and donations through creative fundraising efforts to benefit KARM. The teams then put boats to water on race day and have a real showdown on the lake to see who will be proclaimed “King of the Lake.” The festival and race is open to all comers, and if you’ve never seen or participated in a Dragon Boat race before, you’re in for a real treat. Additionally, food vendors, kid’s games, and activities for the whole family will be onsite, adding to the festive nature of race day. Last year 43 boat teams competed, bringing in funding that provided for 111,230 meals! So make plans now to form a team and enter the race to help KARM in its historic mission. Registration information can be found at www.karm.org/dragonboats. For more information on KARM events, volunteering, event sponsorship, or to make donations, visit www.karm.org or call 865-633-7623.

Each month contributors from the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance (ETPA) write an article for Everything Knoxville celebrating the rich heritage of our region. ETPA is a regional historic preservation organization that partners with Knox Heritage to serve a 16 county region. For more information, to become a member, or to get more involved, visit www.knoxheritage.org/ETPA.

TR AVEL AMERICA :

Welcome to

RED ROCK COUNTRY

F

ROM THE very first glimpse

of the glorious Sedona red rock landscape, visitors feel the majesty and mystery of a place sacred to its earliest prehistoric settlers. It’s been said that “God created the Grand Canyon, but He lives in Sedona.” It is awesome, yet it invites personal exploration. Above plains and canyons soar brilliantly hued cliffs and rugged spires of sandstone sculpted by eons of ocean tides and desert winds. It is a 25-square-mile enclave surrounded by vast stretches of national and state forestlands that make Sedona seem like a world apart. Located two hours north of Phoenix and 30 miles south of the Flagstaff peaks, Sedona’s mild four-season climate and high desert terrain assure good year-round weather for vacationers and outdoor enthusiasts. Oak Creek Canyon, a spectacular 16-mile gorge with streams and waterfalls between sheer rock walls, beckons hikers, campers, and fishermen. It has been termed by Rand McNally as one of the eight most scenic drives in America. Nearly four million travelers visited Sedona last year, rivaling the Grand Canyon, just two-and-a-half hours north, as a worldclass destination. Yet the influx does not disturb the small-town ambiance that is part of Sedona’s charm. Shopping plazas, gift boutiques, galleries, and restaurants abound. Tlaquepaque – an Indian name meaning

60

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE March 2015

“the best of everything” – is modeled after a Mexican village made up of quaint courtyards surrounded by specialty shops, galleries, and restaurants. First popularized by Zane Grey’s “Call of the Canyon,” Sedona became the backdrop for many films shot on location in the early ‘20s. Since then, Hollywood has made the area its back lot, bringing the film stars of each era. Gene Autry, John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Rock Hudson, Elvis Presley, and Robert DeNiro mingled with townsfolk who often appeared as extras. Several celebrities made Sedona their home, including Lucille Ball, Orson Welles, Jane Russell, Walt Disney, Sean Young, Donald O’Connor, and Ann Miller. As an art community, Sedona has found recognition worldwide. Surrealist painter and sculptor, Max Ernst, first settled here in 1950 and attracted other artists and writers of his time. In 1965, the Cowboy Artists of America was founded by a group of western painters as comfortable on the range as with oils. In the spirit of Frederic Remington, the group has created a significant genre of modern art. Where artists flourish, so do galleries. Sedona boasts more than 40 showcases for contemporary arts and crafts, as well as Native American arts. The cultural calendar is filled with gallery openings, art, and music events, as well as local theater productions. When the day wanes and the jeep tour, hiking, and shopping have taken their toll, visitors turn their attention to the

magnificent sunsets. It’s easy to understand why the Anasazi Indians chose to settle here centuries ago and why Carl and Sedona Schnebly – for whom the city was named – made the same decision in 1902.

ACTIVITIES

Whether seen from the back of a horse following trails forged by Western heroes of the Silver Screen or from the unique vantage point of a hot-air balloon or bright red bi-plane, without question the awesome beauty of Sedona’s Red Rocks continues to be the greatest attraction of this incredible area. Man has made his contributions to Sedona’s splendor as well. The Chapel of the Holy Cross, designed by a disciple of Frank Lloyd Wright, sits amongst the Red Rocks, 200 feet above the valley floor. A charming replica of a Mexican village enchants the visitor with tree-shaded cobblestone walkways lined by elegant and distinctive shops. Sedona is truly a perfect “jumping off” spot for many of those who wish to visit some of the other wonders of North-Central Arizona. The Grand Canyon is only 110 miles north, and the former ghost town of Jerome is nearby as well. Walnut Canyon, Meteor and Sunset Craters, and Montezuma’s Castle and Well are all just a short drive away. Group and custom tours are available for those who wish a guided experience. Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits SUCCESS

On January 12, 2009, our lives were turned upside down when Goody’s closed, where John was an IT manager. Living in a borrowed motor coach and with a contractor building our kennel, our income had just been cut in half. Worried was an understatement! Hearing of our misfortune, Tom from Everything Knoxville helped us to create a cost-effective, well-thought out marketing plan to help us secure potential clients for our new kennel. Everything Knoxville is not just magazines. Behind those publications is a great team of professionals, sharing their personal experiences, inspiring and promoting small businesses like ours. In 2014, Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits was recognized as a top boarding resort and grooming spa in the Knoxville area by the Knoxville News Sentinel Reader’s Choice Award. God has truly blessed us! Thank you Everything Knoxville for your role in our success.

RANDY BACHMAN

Entertainment

HETHER YOU were a teen in

the late ‘60s or in the early to mid ‘70s, chances are that The Guess Who or Bachman Turner Overdrive banged around a bit on your eardrums. Songs like “American Woman,” “Undone,” “These Eyes,” “Takin’ Care of Business,” “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet,” and “Let It Ride” dominated the airwaves in those days. One of the men behind those iconic musical memories is Canadian born Randy Bachman – co-founder of both bands, as well as songwriter, guitarist, and co-vocalist. Bachman is soon releasing a new CD of straightforward blues/rock entitled “Heavy Blues.” Joining Bachman’s three-piece band in recording the album are heavy weights like Peter Frampton, Neil Young, Joe Bonamassa, Robert Randolph, and the late Jeff Healey. The result is some amazing, new blues that will blow you away. Boomerocity recently chatted with Bachman about “Heavy Blues” and what was different about making this album compared to all of the other albums he has recorded. “Well, the first album I made was with The Guess Who,” he said. “This is very similar in that there was no overdubs. It was live off the floor. If you made a mistake, you lived with it. You embraced it. “I remember when we cut ‘Shaking All Over’ in 1964, we took the version that had the least amount of mistakes. As you get near the end, if there’s a mistake there, you leave it in. That’s the great thing about some old classic records is little notes and bass notes and endings and things that are there that kind of give it some charm and shows that it’s real people. “So that was the same on this album. We had no rehearsal. No getting to know each other - none of that. I found a great drummer. I found a great bass player. I thought, ‘I’m going to do something weird, I’m gonna get two ladies to back me up.’ They play incredible. “This is the first record that I’ve been in love with once it’s done, because when it’s usually done, I’m so sick of it. I’ve lived with it so long and overdubbed it so long, it’s enough already. This is so fresh and new and happened so quickly - like in five days recording and five days of mixing and after the solos came in because obviously the guest soloist were not there. “The solos were such a revelation of such incredible guitar playing and these guys giving a bit of their heart and soul and personality to each song. It just blew me away. As a guitar player, if I wasn’t on this, this would be one of my favorite albums. For me, it was just a wonderful experience. We got into this late ‘60s British trio power trip like Hendrix and Cream and The Who and Zeppelin, and we just had the time of our lives.”

Of all the contributing artists to this album, most intriguing was the contribution by the late Jeff Healey. Bachman provided the back story to this. “Well, he and I were great friends. We both had radio shows on CBC, where he explored jazz. I have a radio show that’s still going called Randy’s Vinyl Tap on every Saturday night. So, we had that in common, and every time he would be playing around Victoria, Vancouver, even in London, I’d call him up, and he’d invite me down, and I’d go and see his gig. I’d have dinner with him and the band. I’d go on stage and play with him. “I recorded live with him at Massey Hall in Toronto, and I was going to put it on an album. It just never happened. I got busy doing other things, and he got serious cancer and passed away. I thought, ‘Here I am doing Jeff Healey’s stuff,' and so I sent a little email to his wife, Cristie. “She said, ‘Oh my God! Jeff would love to be on this album with you. You have my blessing.’ He and I recorded a BB King song called ‘Early In The Morning.’ It was one of his standard encore kind of songs. So I write a song that was in the same beats per minute, and I’d leave it all in the key of G, and it becomes ‘Confessin’ To The Devil.’” As we wrapped up our chat, I asked Randy what he hoped his legacy would be and how he wished to be remembered. “Well, this was a good guy. He wrote some good songs. He was a better-than-average guitar player. He helped out young kids playing guitar and played on the records and taught them how to write songs, and he took care of business.” March 2015 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

Educator Profile

Beverly Anderson WHEN BEVERLY Anderson was a

freshman in college, she took a career interest test that told her she was well suited to be a school counselor. There must have been some merit to it – not only has she made a career out of counseling, she’s been named a 2015 American School Counselor Association School Counselor of the Year semifinalist. “It is such an honor and privilege to be named a semifinalist,” said Beverly, who’s in her seventh year counseling at Bearden High School. “The White House Ceremony has drawn national attention and awareness for school counselors across the country. There are many school counselors (about 105,000 in the country!) who work tirelessly often behind the scenes - and who make insurmountable differences in the lives of students every day.” Beverly spent a few years working in admissions at the University of Tennessee before she and her husband decided one of them should have a work schedule that matched the schools’ so they could spend

more time with their children. She remembered her career interest test and decided to become a school counselor. She earned all three of her degrees at UTK: B.S. in business education, M.S. in college student personnel, and EdS in school counseling. “I love the student interaction - building relationships with students and families,” she said. “I also enjoy working collaboratively with faculty, administration, and district colleagues.” Like many educators, Beverly says there’s no such thing as a typical day in her world. She’s ready to go by the time students arrive at 8 am, and her days are spent helping students in need. This could involve academic issues such as graduation requirements, course registration, or college plans, or it may involve working with school psychologists and social workers to help

It’s a challenging job, to say the least. “Large caseloads prevent me from really getting to know all students on my caseload,” said Beverly. “Also, increased testing duties have traditionally fallen on school counselors, which takes away about six weeks out of the school year where I could be spending those valuable moments meeting student needs.” As one of just 16 semifinalists for School Counselor of the Year, Beverly attended a White House recognition ceremony hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama. “I just happen to be one whose efforts got noticed by a colleague, and that notice turned into a nomination, which led to my entering the competition,” she said.

Sharing a Piece of Yourself

It’s our passion, and by sharing something of value with our clients, we’re not only creating a rapport, but we’re also demonstrating the value we offer to our customers. I’m not talking about an advertising specialty item, like a refrigerator magnet or a keychain. That stuff is meaningless. I’m talking about sharing a piece of yourself – your experiences, advice, or personal insights – that can help propel your client forward. In our publication, we often utilize article space to help our advertisers to successfully differentiate themselves from their competitors. Because of our many years of marketing expertise, and our in-depth knowledge of our clients’ businesses, we are able to assist our advertisers in composing their own articles, which helps them to differentiate themselves from their competition in the minds of our readers. And the fact that they author their own articles helps them establish an instant

The time we invest demonstrates to our advertising partners that we are fully committed to their success and that we are willing to invest ourselves into their futures. Success is earned. If you sell a commodity product or service, earning success may not be important to you, but that type of success can also be fleeting. It’s a momentary success that will evaporate when your customers discover an alternative source for your product or service available at a lower price. You’ll also discover another and even greater intangible when you provide something of

real value to your customers, and that is the enormous personal satisfaction that comes from sharing in your customers’ success – a success that resulted in part from the investments you made in your clients. While writing this article, I received a phone call from a great advertising client with whom we have been initiating and supporting a new marketing strategy for his small business. He shared with me that he just received his single largest order ever for his new service. It’s a combined success that results from sharing something of value with a loyal and dedicated client.

The Problem with Panic WHILE I’M not sure who penned the

phrase, “Busy isn’t from the devil, busy is the devil,” it’s someone that deserves respect. While in the process of starting a small business, my mind is on things that need to be done. While there is a written to do list, there is another one swirling like a thundercloud above my head. Those are the things that need to be added to the already filled agenda. It’s a constant swirl of brain-exhausting activity. Recently I got a call from my 79 year old mom. While she is active and healthy, she had fallen and crushed her elbow. Her dominant one, at that, her right arm. For my sister and I, who live the closest, we became the caregivers. Even though we are within driving distance, it can wreak havoc on any schedule. Thankfully, we’ve been able to divvy up what needs to be done and both continue working. Our mom will have surgery, she will get a new elbow, and things will get back to normal. That being said, it’s a necessary lesson. We should always expect the unexpected. While it’s a busy world, expecting the

unexpected can help us to maintain a productivity edge. » Create margin. It’s unwise to schedule every moment of every day. We should allow room for unexpected circumstances. Otherwise, we will find ourselves in a panic because we will fall behind. Once panic sets in, we will be busy but ineffective. » Stay ahead. The heart of most small business people is the freedom to be creative. That means time to think, forecast new visions, and generate enthusiasm, which means our countenance must be one of confidence. » Ignore others. That is right. Most people are too busy, trying to do too many things, then wonder why they can’t catch up. It’s a vicious cycle in which our world holds many people captive. Don’t fall into that trap. Don’t overcommit. It’s destructive on so many levels. » Stay positive. Norman Vincent Peale says “happiness is a habit.” As in one which must be practiced. While no one can be happy all the time, we can strive to achieve a positive outlook. This habit can help create

an atmosphere where things get done. » Pay attention to the tension. When you feel panicky, it’s ok, don’t beat yourself up. It simply alerts you to reassess. When your schedule gets shaken up due to unexpected events, take a step back and realign. The world will not come to an end if you miss a day or get off schedule. That’s the problem with panic. It forces us to live with blinders on, unaware of life’s pleasures. Not good! Every commitment must be intentional. That includes enjoying our success, the people in our lives, and the tasks at hand. What good is it to work hard and achieve goals, only to be so stressed that we find ourselves consistently unhappy? Yep. Excellent question. Surviving Your College Kid’s Spring Break

I

F YOU have young children, spring

break is often a fun, family time. If you have college age children, spring break can be a time of anxiety and worry. It is a rite of passage for many college coeds to head to the beach with a bunch of friends for some fun under the sun. It is also a rite of passage for the parents left behind to be nervous wrecks. No one wants to think of their son at the bottom of a beer bong or their daughter entering a bikini contest. As a parent, you have a right to be concerned about their activities. One of the best things you can do is arm them with pertinent advice before they hit the beach. Giving them this advice can help keep them safe. It can also help you relax a bit while they are away. Theft – Tell your children that young adults on spring break are prime targets for thieves. From the airport and the beaches to the bars and the boardwalk, thieves are standing by and ready to snatch a purse, wallet, phone, and most anything of value. They must stay alert. Advise your spring breaker to take advantage of a hotel safe or safety deposit box, if one is

available, to keep their valuables and extra money. If a safe is not available, advise them to hide their expensive items when they are not in their rooms. Transportation – Make sure you have all your children’s transportation information before they leave. This should include flight times and numbers and the hotel address. If your children are planning to drive with friends to a destination, make sure you know the route they plan to drive. Also, help them research and familiarize themselves with public transportation options in the city where they will be staying. Many spring break destinations have cabs, shuttles, or other kinds of transportation available, so that college kids aren’t on the roads drinking and driving. Partying – Most young adults will drink on spring break. Tell them to do you a favor and to party smart and stay in groups. Tell them if they are going to drink, to pace themselves and to always keep an eye on their drinks. If they go to the restroom, they should take their drinks with them to avoid anyone tampering

w i t h t h e m . A l s o, advise your spring breaker that alcohol is felt sooner and stronger in a hot tub. In fact, combining the effects of alcohol with the heat of a hot tub can lead to unconsciousness and drowning. So tell them to not combine the two. It is acceptable to ask your children to maintain contact with you throughout their trip. A call or text message daily is generally sufficient and respectful. Tell your spring breaker that no matter what may occur, they can always call home if they need help or if they find themselves in a situation that doesn’t feel comfortable. By giving your young adult helpful advice and keeping the communication straight-forward and clear, you can survive their spring break 2015. The Etiquette of Debate SO WHAT has changed? Is it really ano-

nymity that has allowed our true voices to be heard, or has our intolerance of others increased and anonymity has given us a platform to express our views? What am I talking about? I’m talking about the filth I see on social media every day. I’m talking about the barrage of personal, vicious insults that are posted every day when we don’t particularly agree with the choices and values of others. Wow! It just boggles my mind that human beings believe that if they personally insult someone, express how disgusting their beliefs are, etc., that this might be the thing that finally makes the other person “wake up” and see the folly of their ways. That leads me to question, what must be the motivation? Do we engage in conversation in order to make our voices heard or possibly to influence the choices of others, or is it more sinister... to lift ourselves above others? We must be careful and ask ourselves why we are participating in conversation. Please allow 66

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE March 2015

me to list a few etiquette rules to remember when engaging in conversation, whether online or in person. It is polite to respect other people’s opinions. We do this by thoughtfully listening without interrupting and acknowledging that we value their opinion. We say things like, “Thank you for sharing your thoughts on that” or “I appreciate your passion for this” or “I hear what you’re saying and realize now this can be looked at from different perspectives.” Any of these comments sends a message that we acknowledge that every person is entitled to their opinion. It is NEVER polite or appropriate to issue a personal insult towards someone just because we severely disagree with their views. Personal insults are things like insinuating that someone is ignorant, immoral, non-Christian, a bigot, the list goes on. You may believe this, but it is not our responsibility. And, it doesn’t work! When we do this, it shows our own insecurities. It proves that we are weak minded

and have little self control. Why? Because if we cannot speak of our beliefs without personally insulting others, then we have a very weak argument. Think before you post. Ask yourself what your motivation is. Remember that to influence others, you must first have their respect. As you speak with humility in a spirit of true concern and love for others, then perhaps your words will have influence. Have a great month. Our Summer Manners Camp schedule for children 5-13 years of age is now posted on www.TheEtiquetteFactory.com.

Fat Reduction That Fits WITH SPRIN G and summer just

around the corner, many of us start thinking about how we are going to look in our warm weather wardrobes. Frequently, unwanted body fat taints this image. Fortunately, the science behind the removal of unwanted body fat has evolved. There are now scientifically proven, non-invasive and minimally invasive procedures to help individuals obtain their ideal body shape. If you can pinch an unwanted inch, the revolutionary Liposonix device may be just the answer to what diet and exercise alone have not been able to accomplish. Liposonix is a new device that utilizes focused ultrasound energy to non-invasively permanently

destroy body fat. “1 hour, 1 treatment, 1 size smaller” is the moniker for this treatment. In controlled studies, Liposonix patients lost an average of one to two inches from their waistlines, with maximum results seen within eight to 12 weeks. The treatment takes approximately one hour, and there is no downtime. In fact, there are no post-treatment restrictions, and most patients can leave the office and immediately return to their normal activities. Liposonix is different from other non-invasive body contouring devices that can be limited in their ability to treat certain areas of fat and may require several hours and multiple treatment sessions to adequately address problem areas. The Liposonix system is highly versatile, allowing control over precisely how and where energy is delivered for a truly customized treatment in a single one-hour session. While Liposonix was cleared in the U.S. by the FDA in 2011, it is backed by 10 years of extensive study. It has been featured on Dr. Oz, 20/20, The View,

and in many of the top beauty magazines such as Allure, Vogue, and Elle. For those that need to lose more than an inch or two, tumescent microcannular liposuction may be the answer. This in-office, minimally invasive procedure, which utilizes only local anesthesia, was pioneered by a dermatologist in 1985 and is now considered the worldwide standard for liposuction. SmartLipo and SlimLipo are two well-known devices that have been cleared by the FDA for the destruction of fat (laser lipolysis). These devices serve as an enhancement to tumescent microcannular liposuction, promoting easier fat removal and better skin contraction. After SmartLipo or SlimLipo, most patients are able to return to work in two or three days. Virtually any area with excess fat can be treated. The neck, arms, abdomen, love handles, and thighs all respond beautifully to this procedure. Patients often ask me how much weight they are going to lose with these procedures. I try to explain that these are body contouring procedures, not weight loss procedures. It is also very important that patients maintain a healthy lifestyle after these procedures. Even though fat is permanently destroyed,

if a patient gains weight, the fat must go somewhere, and it probably won’t go where you want it to.
