From the Publisher reflect back on the current year and start to make plans for the upcoming year. Why wait until January to begin working on 2016 resolutions? You can start on those resolutions right now. As a business owner, my husband, Tom, and I periodically evaluate how our business is tracking for the year and make adjustments as necessary. It’s not advisable to get “comfortable” with how you do business. Every so often changes need to be made to a business so it can continue to grow. And that also applies on a personal level. This month we are pleased to highlight Brian Vodinh of The Brian Vodinh Group at Keller Williams Realty and his wife, Brooke, who are helping their clients achieve their dreams of home ownership and helping clients maximize the sale of their home. But Brian did not start out in real estate. His music and musical composing career was his focus until his newest edition to

the Vodinh family was born three months premature. Brian’s focus changed. He had to make an adjustment. He wanted to be home permanently with his family, and he has been able to transition his music career into a very successful real estate career helping families find the home of their dreams. Family is the most important focus, and this holiday season, as you prepare for Christmas and New Year’s celebrations, take time to surround yourself with family and friends. Put down the cell phones and the video games, and engage with your family in conversation and activities. Take a drive to see the pretty decorations and lights in your neighborhood, or just take a walk as a family. Make family and the people around you your priority. We at Everything Knoxville would like to wish all of you, our readers and advertisers, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Enjoy the season!

Introducing

The BrianVodinh Group at Keller Williams Realty

P

URSUING YOUR life’s ambi-

tion can be very challenging to say the least, but pursing two separate ambitions requires an even higher level of discipline that very few entrepreneurs learn to successfully navigate. Brian Vodinh is just such a person. So just how does a person balance his passion for music – which involves having been a founding member and main songwriter of the popular international touring rock band called 10 Years, owning his own recording and audio production facility called Rain Song Creative, being a Universal/Republic Records recording artist and releasing several albums and even a charttopping number one single with the rock hit “Wasteland,” and helping handle audio post production responsibilities for television shows such as Discovery Channel’s popular Sons of Guns and Animal Planet’s Wild West Alaska series – with his enormous passion for real estate? This month Everything Knoxville is excited to bring you this interview with Brian Vodinh, who resides with his wife, Brooke, and their three children in Knoxville. This enormously talented young man will share with you how he has been able to transform his music career into a successful real estate career at The Brian Vodinh Group at Keller Williams. EK: Many of us have followed more than one career path in our lives, but few of us can claim to have sold more than one million albums and singles, let alone composing the score of a Hollywood feature film. While music and real estate careers may appear to have little in common, there are in fact a great many similarities. Each requires the ability to work with a team, advertising, marketing, and financial skills, not to mention excellent negotiating and people skills. Tell our readers just how these skills that you developed in your 15+ year music career has helped your clients in your real estate career. Brian: One of the most important things I have learned throughout the years is to be authentic and to always conduct myself with integrity and honesty. Big sales pitches and tons of fluff are unnecessary and can hinder the process. As a musician that has been through the process of signing a multi-million dollar recording contract and touring all across the world, one of the things I joke about 6

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE December 2015

is that there is more business than music in the music business. It was certainly a crash course in fine-tuning my people skills and negotiating tough contracts, both of which have greatly benefitted my real estate clients. EK: Tell us why you selected Keller Williams Realty. Brian: Keller Williams was the right fit. The culture within Keller Williams was very attractive to me. It’s now the industry leading firm, and the education and support they provide to their agents really made them the best choice for me. EK: Your real estate team, The Brian Vodinh Group at Keller Williams Realty, is made further unique as your wife, Brooke, is a key member of your team. Truly a family business, how do you feel that benefits your clients? Brian: One of our children, who is now almost 10 months old, was born more than three months premature. The adventure with our little girl began at our 20-week checkup at the doctor when we found out that Brooke was in the midst of premature labor and there was a strong chance we could lose our little angel. We are more than gracious for the amazing team at UT Medical Center who were able to maintain Brooke’s pregnancy until 27 weeks and then take such great care of our little girl in the NICU for nearly five months. Brooke and I made a pact that if we could get through this challenge together, then we could get through anything, and I can say with absolute confidence that we make an incredible team! When someone calls us for their real estate needs, they don’t just get me, they also get Brooke. With her extensive sales experience, there is no aspect of a real estate transaction that she cannot handle. I’m very proud to call her my wife, business partner, and best friend. EK: Tell our readers how our area residential real estate marketplace has evolved during the last five years and what our outlook is for the future. Brian: The future is very bright in housing! Knoxville is a superb market and will continue to see consistent growth. Areas such as Farragut and Hardin Valley are growing stronger and thriving from the continued expansion of area commercial developments, as well as offering top-notch educations from some of the highest rated schools in the state of Tennessee. EK: You have been selected to represent an

area developer and take the lead on sales and acquisitions for a very large, brand new West Knoxville residential project, as well as helping the firm with sales in Farragut’s Split Rail Farm subdivision. Why do you feel that The Brian Vodinh Group was selected to represent these very important communities? Brian: First, I would like to commend the management team at Development & Design Concepts for the fine work they do. They pay very close attention to detail and genuinely care about the quality of service that they provide. My relationship with them developed out of a mutual respect for each other’s work, and I believe they respect my tireless work ethic and commitment to achieving successful outcomes for both their customers and DDC. Also, both DDC and The Brian Vodinh Group share the same objective, which is to go above and beyond for our

clients and exceeding their expectations. EK: How do you feel that The Brian Vodinh Group can better represent the needs of both buyers and sellers in today’s real estate marketplace? Brian: It’s all about the needs of our clients. We are committed to making the process of buying and selling real estate simple and stress-free. We are a family helping families with the goal of developing long-lasting relationships with people. EK: What is the best way for our readers who may have an interest in buying a new or existing home or selling their current home to contact you? Brian: Give us a call! Our direct line is 865-221-2102 and our office line is 865-9665005. We are also always available by email at brianvodinh@kw.com, and we love to share

our listings and interesting articles we feel could be beneficial to homeowners on our Facebook page, which is www.facebook.com/ brianvodinhgroup EK: In closing, is there anything else you would like to say to our readers? Brian: After I made the decision to stop touring with the band and be home permanently with my family, I knew that helping people with their real estate needs was what I would do for the rest of my life. Finding the perfect home for someone, or selling their home, is a truly gratifying experience. Much like writing a song that pulls at someone’s heart strings, finding a family the home of their dreams is equally as fulfilling. We look forward to meeting many more of the great people in our community and developing relationships that will last a lifetime!

designing and m a rket i n g ba g s for other brands my whole career. Until I created Patricia Nash Designs, people had been encouraging me for years to come up with my own line of handbags. My response was always the same: Until I found something truly special, I wouldn’t put my name on it. One day, while helping my mother clean out her closet, I found a vintage leather handbag with intricate tooling and designs. It evoked an emotional response in me, bringing up memories about family and my travels abroad in Europe. Throughout the years, I had collected vintage Italian handbags that I discovered in second-hand and antique shops. I love the old world handcraftsmanship and the beautiful Italian veg tan leather. I love the way these old bags weathered and how each one looks as if it could tell a story. Like my mother’s handbag that she had kept sitting in her closet for 50 years, all wrapped up securely, each bag holds so many memories. I decided this was something worth pursuing, and ever since I have been pouring my heart and soul into the bags that you see in stores today. We often say that a Patricia Nash handbag is as timeless as the places you take it. I genuinely believe that, and I carry my own bags with me wherever I go. Whether traveling abroad, shopping, going to work, or hanging out with your family, there is a Patricia Nash accessory that has the form and function you can count on. I work hard to make sure each style makes a woman feel special and inspired, ready for the next adventure in her life. And now with our Men’s Collection, Nash for Men, the men in your lives can also enjoy the rich Italian leather and functional detail that they need. I travel a lot in this business and am away from my family a great deal. But when I am back home in Knoxville, I cherish those moments with family. I hope you share my passion for life and take a moment to breathe and reflect on what means the most to you. As I always say, enjoy the moment!

HE BIG GREEN EGG COMPANY was founded

by Ed Fisher more than 35 years ago as he took on the challenge of developing a modernized version of an ancient Asian cooker. Often called a “modern culinary marvel,” the EGG has amassed legions of loyal fans that include backyard grillers, culinary aficionados, and world-class chefs all across the world. So how has the Big Green Egg developed such a cult-like following? Versatility is the name of the game with a Big Green Egg. You can perfectly prepare anything from a steakhouse-style grilled porterhouse to a tender brisket, turkey, or pork tenderloin. But meats are just the start of the options you can prepare in a Big Green Egg. Vegetables, stews, stirfrys, casseroles, and desserts are superb. Pizza on an EGG is in a class of its own. You can truly cook an entire meal in an EGG. And the EGG can even be converted into a convection oven! Loca l ly The Gri l l Store in Bearden offers the complete line of Big Green Eggs, from a Mini Egg to the new EGGzilla – an XXLarge EGG twice the size of the already impressive XLarge EGG. If your special chef already has a Big Green Egg, look no further than The Grill Store for hundreds of

grilling accessories and gourmet seasonings and sauces that are perfect not only for EGG users but for any type of outdoor grilling. The store offers aromatic smoking woods, gourmet grilling planks, 100% organic lump charcoa l, dozens of seasonings and rubs for meat, poultry, fish, or vegetables, and much more. “EGGstremely” popular are the grilling classes led by Pat Bright, owner of The Grill Store and Prism Pool & Backyard along with husband Tom. “We personally use EGGs at our home and love to share our passion for grilling with our customers,” said Pat. “Every time we announce a cooking class we max out our capacity in just days.” If you are a griller or have a special griller in your life, be sure to visit The Grill Store for gift shopping this holiday season. What Do Ebenezer Scrooge and Newborn Ears Have in Common? “Mankind is my business. The common welfare is my business; charity, mercy, forbearance, benevolence are all my business. The dealings of my trade are but a drop of water in the comprehensive ocean of my business.” – Charles Dickens, “A Christmas Carol”

S

INCE I WAS a child, Charles

Dickens’ classic “A Christmas Carol” has been traditional Christmas Eve viewing at our house (the 1938 black and white version, which my father recorded on our then-high-tech VCR around 1981). The quote, spoken by the ghost of Scrooge’s longtime business partner Jacob Marley, perfectly sums up his view of the goals he and Scrooge had for their business while he was living, emphasizing material possessions over the common welfare. Plastic surgery, as I have written before, is a wonderful specialty. As plastic surgeons, we affect positive changes in the lives of each of our patients on a daily basis. Some of the profound impact we have isn’t appreciated until much later. This is especially true in the case of much of the pediatric aspect of plastic surgery, a part that doesn’t often make it to the E! network or “Inside Edition.” Take, for example, this child who was born with the ear deformity that you see in the upper photo. As you can see, I have been able to completely correct what is a severe deformity (and without surgery!) in six weeks. However, at just eight weeks old when the bottom photo was taken, she is blissfully unaware of what has happened and may stay that way until she is looking through photos of herself as a newborn one day. However, because she will not have to grow up and endure the

Holidays De-Stressed E

ATING DURING the holidays can sometimes be stressful. Holidays

are a time when the body usually endures overindulgence, more than normal saturated fats, simple sugars, higher salt intake, and little to no fiber. Even with all this, one can still enjoy the holidays with family and friends by making just a few changes and additions to holiday fare. There are many helpful tips that we can use during this season to help combat the holiday indulgence and its aftermath. If you are enjoying traditional fare, try adding just one healthy ingredient to recipes. Add millet or quinoa to traditional dressings and add blended nuts, sunflower seeds, and pumpkin seeds to gravies and vegetable dishes. Add pomegranate seeds, cherries, and walnuts to cranberry sauce and pomegranate juice to salad dressings, or try blending avocados with pumpkin seeds to make a creamy, delicious salad dressing for another twist. These are just a few examples to ensure higher fiber intake, as well as more vitamins, nutrients, antioxidants, and better quality fats. If you are going home for the holidays, there are tips that can help ensure a less stressful holiday. Even though overindulgence is synonymous with holiday eating, it is best to limit quantity. Even if you are eating foods that are not your norm, eating smaller amounts and chewing well negates side effects that may be experienced otherwise. Another tip includes adding grated daikon (a Japanese white radish) as a side dish, which helps eliminate fats from the body and aids in digestion. Green tea is another healthy addition to include. Green tea contains catechin polyphenols, which has been shown to remove fats by lowering cholesterol, and is also shown to contain antibacterial properties. Holiday eating doesn’t have to be stressful. By adding some simple ingredients to traditional recipes, you can make a world of difference by transforming recipes to a healthier version. Likewise, there are helpful tips to help with the aftermath of holiday indulgences. It is more important to enjoy the holidays with family and friends than worry. Note: Consult your healthcare professional before making any dietary changes. These articles and recipes are not intended to diagnose or treat any illness.

Healthcare Focus: Gut Health and the Immune System “All disease begins in the gut.”—Hippocrates

I

T HAS LONG BEEN known that the human gut plays an

integral role in our overall health, as well as in the functioning of our immune systems. However, the gut is often overlooked when treating illnesses, both large and small. Knox Wellness, a Knoxvillebased integrated health clinic, is working to change this by bringing the study and treatment of gut related issues into their robust service offering.

"The composition of organisms in the gut determine, to an extent, how your body stores the food you eat, how easy or hard it is for you to lose weight, and how well your metabolism functions and what roles it plays in inflammation." The human gut contains 10 times more bacteria than all the cells in the entire body, with more than 400 known diverse bacterial species. “Many people think the gut is involved only in digestion, but it also provides protection from infection by keeping foreign substances from entering the body and regulating metabolism,” says Emily Kopek, PA-C. “A dysregulated gut has been linked to a variety of diseases, including autism, depression, chronic fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome, and even autoimmune diseases such as Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and Type 1 Diabetes, making proper diagnosis and treatment of gut related issues imperative for a patient’s overall health.” The Knox Wellness team takes gut health very seriously. Beginning with thorough testing for flora imbalances in the gut and any potential bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine, the Knox Wellness team works with patients to develop individualized treatment options that often include dietary and supplement recommendations and the use of herbal antimicrobials, probiotics, and enzymes. “The composition of organisms in the gut determine, to an extent, how your body stores the food you eat, how easy or hard it is for you to lose weight, and how well your metabolism functions and what roles it plays in inflammation,” said Kopek. “A big part of what we do is work on restoring healthy gut function to help a variety of conditions, even if a patient does not have gastrointestinal symptoms.” If you’d like to learn more about how gut health affects your overall wellness, visit www.knoxwellnessexperience.com.

Thankful for My Hair Testimonials from actual clients BELOW ARE testimonials from three clients who found a solution for their thin hair. Hair Hair, hair everywhere Stuck on fabrics and the chair On the floor, near the door To clean it up will be a chore. It will take quite a while To figure out the best style Cut and crimped or hanging limp Easy to fix when you primp. Hair that once was alive Now it’s just perfectly dyed Sprayed and teased and styled to please Moves just like it’s in a breeze. Can you guess or believe Is it a wig or a weave? Do you really truly care Ultimately it’s all hair. It’s a secret – don’t you tell It’s your business, guard it well No one will be any wiser When you wear a Volumizer. – MB in Knoxville

“For as long as I can remember, I have had thin hair. In trying to solve this problem, I have used many products, all to no avail. Many hours each week were spent trying to make my hair presentable. Getting caught in a windy or rainy situation was a nightmare. Luckily I read an article in the local paper about the Volumizer being installed at Garde Bien Salon by Stacey Handel. Quickly I realized what a wonderful product it is, and nothing could have prepared me for the results. Now I can do whatever I want without worrying about my hair getting messed up. Washing and setting it takes only 30 minutes and is very easy for me to do instead of going to a hairdresser each week. When I go for ‘reset’ appointments, Stacey and I discuss any changes I would like. She is so well-trained and knowledgeable in installing and maintaining this product. I have had a Volumizer for more than two years and can’t imagine life without it.” – CJ in Knoxville

“I lost my husband to cancer, and shortly thereafter I was diagnosed with breast cancer. When the cancer came back, I had more surgery and began an intense chemo treatment for four months. The medical staff assured me my hair would return. However, it has not. I saw an article about the Evolve Volumizer. I didn’t call for months, because I was sure it wouldn’t work. I am thrilled Stacey took me as a client. I assured her I could be her greatest challenge. It is a life-changing event to have my own hair. I hike and swim and sleep, and the lack of a wig at night is wonderful.” – JS in Knoxville

A Month Full of Black Fridays

I

F YOU’RE LIKE ME, the upcoming Christmas and New Year’s holidays are my favorite – and yes, stressful – time of the year. It’s not enough that we have to clean our homes, decorate, prepare the meals, and shop for friends and loved ones. The one thing all of us shoppers have in common is our desire to discover quality merchandise at the very best value possible. But trying to take full advantage of all the advertised sales offered by your favorite merchants can leave you feeling like you’ve just run a steeplechase. Some sales are for a short period of time, often starting at midnight or 5 am, and are limited to merchandise on hand. Just you and a few thousand o t h e r s h o p p e rs competing for the same item or items that may already be out of stock in just the few minutes it takes you to locate the merchandise in the first place. Black Thursday, Black Friday, cyber this, and cyber that. Who needs it? At Veronica G Boutique, starting as early as last Christmas, we decided to do something rather unique for Christmas 2015. We were going to offer our special Black Friday pricing – not just for one day, but for the entire month of December. This means that you can select from our boutique’s wide selection of ladies’ apparel from a host of renowned fashion designers, a wide variety of accessories, and some of the most exquisite designer-inspired jewelry that you’re likely to see this holiday season. So forget the holiday shopping steeplechase and enjoy Black Friday prices all December long.

A Unique Christmas Gift for Someone Special W

E ALL HAVE THEM – those

very special people in our lives that we would like to do something special for this Christmas but that we just can’t seem to find at those big crowded department stores or even online. Well, here’s an exciting alternative for you to consider this Christmas. How about a gift created from art glass? And not just any art glass, but a one-of-a-kind piece of art created by a local artisan with a three decades long passion for her craft. A piece of glass art that will remind that someone special of your thoughtfulness and years of friendship, and a piece of art that will become a treasured family heirloom. It is the artistic component of this art form, influenced by my grandmother early in my life and my trips abroad, that have captured both my passion and my imagination. I truly enjoy working hand-in-hand with homeowners, businesses, and churches who wish to create something truly unique, but at this time of year I especially enjoy working with individuals who wish to create that perfect holiday gift for that special someone in their life, helping them to express their very own artistic natures through a glass art gift. While there are a few limitations to how glass can be used, there are no limitations on our combined imaginations or skills. I can design stained glass, leaded glass, beveled glass, sand blasted glass, hand-painted, and kiln-fired stained glass. If you would like to discover just how glass can be creatively used to create that perfect Christmas gift this holiday season or throughout your entire home or business to create that one-of-a-kind, designer-inspired work of glass art that will truly amaze, I invite you to visit my studio Monday through Friday from 1 to 5 pm or to call me to set up a personal consultation. You can select your holiday gift from the many beautiful glass art pieces in my studio, or we can work together to create your very own design that will make this holiday season the most memorable one in years.

Understandably, that’s the question most frequently asked by our clients. The answer is yes. In fact, we’re so confident you’ll lose inches that you’ll pay nothing if your treatment doesn’t produce results. Here’s how the Strawberry procedure works. At the beginning of your first treatment, measurements are taken of your treatment area. Completely painless, the treatment requires only 20 minutes, during which time you can read, watch TV, or just relax. The unique Strawberry Laser works by safely expelling water, fatty acids, and glycerol from your fat cells, causing them to shrink and ultimately be carried out of your body in your urine. time for all of us at Gallery on Main in historic downtown Sweetwater. If you’re having difficulty selecting that perfect gift for that special someone on your holiday shopping list, I invite you to discover the Art of Christmas at Gallery on Main. We offer a variety of gift items, including framed art, hand-crafted jewelry, photography, and more from more than 25 regional artists. And this month I am pleased to introduce our newest artist, Sherry Smith of Waldens Ridge Gallery. Sherry was raised in East Tennessee and has always been drawn to the beauty of the mountains. “It’s nearly impossible to see what God has blessed us with and not want to recreate that splendor in a painting,” she said. She and her husband, John, enjoy hiking mountain trails when time permits, and those hikes have provided the subjects for many of Sherry’s paintings. In recent years, the travel bug has bitten, providing Sherry with the opportunity to create works inspired by these captivating images discovered while traveling. In addition to plein air painting, Sherry does portraits and other studio works from photographs. She also enjoys doing commissions for a specific subject. Whether it’s an old home place, a favorite childhood photo, or that special old “set of wheels,” Sherry can most likely turn it into a painting! Sherry has been creating unique and vibrant works in acrylics since she began painting in 2002 and considers it an honor to display her works among the other celebrated regional artists whose works are on display at Gallery on Main. Please join us in sharing the holiday spirit!

Feeling and Looking Your Best

M

Y PASSION for a career

in medicine began early in life, and along with the steadfast encouragement of my greatest mentor – my father, an entrepreneur – I discovered that I could achieve anything in life by combining a strong work ethic and a dedication to my dreams. Sadly, my father passed away far too early, but he still took a great deal of pride in seeing his daughter become an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) with a master’s degree in nursing along with becoming a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner. It’s in my father’s memory that I started Gott Family Medical Clinic. Gott Family Medical Clinic is dedicated to helping every member of your family achieve their optimal health potential. As an APRN, I am educated and trained to provide health promotion and maintenance through the diagnosis and treatment of acute illness and chronic conditions. Our office provides a relaxed, comfortable environment for your healthcare in a convenient location. The services I provide include: » Direct Primary Care (adult and child) » Urgent Care (allergies, cold/flu, lacerations/ cuts, coughs/sore throats, sinus problems) » Complete physicals, sports physicals, work physicals » Vaccinations » In-office testing (rapid strep tests, influenza tests) » In-office diagnostics (spirometry, blood glucose) 32

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE December 2015

» Nutritional counseling » Medication management » Blood work » Well visits » New problem visits » Chronic disease management » Hormone Replacement Therapy » Skin lesion removal (moles, skin tags, warts, fibromas) » Pap smears, pelvic annual exams Another area of my practice that I am particularly proud of is the incorporation of a medical spa we call The Face Place™. By combining Gott Family Medical Clinic with The Face Place™, we are able to help patients to not only feel their best, but to look their best as well. UT Gardens Plant of the Month:

LACEBARK ELM

NO TREE is perfect. Some have lots of issues

and are not considered desirable landscape plants. Trees with few issues tend to show up regularly on lists of recommended trees for urban use. Flaws that might not be so noticeable in the typical landscape are going to be obvious when the tree is used on a city street. Lacebark elm, Ulmus parvifolia, shows up repeatedly on these lists and was chosen as Urban Street Tree of the year in 2003 by the Society of Municipal Arborists. Sometimes you may see this species called Chinese elm, but a concerted effort has been made to change that, since Chinese elm is also a common name for Ulmus pumila, a tree that has little to recommend it. Of course the Latin name is the best way to ascertain that you are indeed purchasing the correct plant.

36

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE December 2015

Lacebark elms grow rapidly and have small leaves that are less likely to clog drains or create a littered aspect. They are strong-wooded, heat and drought resistant once established, and winter hardy at least to Zone 5. There is much variation in the genetics and selections have been made for upright, v-shaped growth habits – ideal for trees that will offer shade yet not obstruct pedestrians or drag on the roofs of automobiles. Other cultivar selections offer traits such as dwarf, compact, or variegated forms. Still others are evergreen or semi-evergreen in warmer climes, and some offer burgundy fall color. A clone called ‘Golden Rey’ glows with softly golden foliage. Perhaps the most remarkable ornamental attribute is the one that characterizes the common name – the beautiful exfoliating bark. In tones

of gray, green, orange, and cinnamon brown, it is reminiscent of the most colorful crapemyrtle barks but has more of a lacy textural interest. Some cultivars have richer tones, and some will develop this ornamental attribute when quite young, while others may take several years. So if no tree is perfect, what is the flaw in lacebark elm? It can reseed vigorously, though this varies by cultivar. Plant lacebark elm in full sun, and look up first as it will become a medium to large tree, 40 feet to 50 feet in height, with a comparable spread. This is dependent on the cultivar, as some have been selected for narrower growth habits. It is adaptable to most any soil, but avoid consistently soggy. Specimens can be seen in the parking lot at the UT Gardens, Jackson. The golden form, ‘Golden Rey’, is found at the southeast corner of the building. Carol Reese is the Western Region Ornamental Horticulture Specialist for University of Tennessee Extension. Her office is located in the West Tennessee AgResearch and Education Center in Jackson. The University of Tennessee Gardens located in Knoxville, Crossville, and Jackson are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public except during designated special events. For more information, visit www.utgardens.tennessee.edu. Photos by C. Reese, courtesy UTIA

Steps to Selling Your Home

S

ELLING YOUR HOME? Go into the process prepared to maximize your outcome. Hopefully you bought low, now’s the time to sell high! The first two priorities are: 1. Finding the right real estate agent to help with the sale, and 2. Deciding on a marketing plan. The real estate agent helps with the nuts and bolts of data collection, analysis, valuation, pricing, and comparing your property to the inventory currently on the market in your area. Quality service more than pays for itself. Discuss and agree on the rules for showings; for example, only pre-qualified buyers should get appointments to review the home. Open houses are the one time anyone, especially other brokers, should see the residence. Review the marketing strategy with the agent. Print and electronic media should be used. 3. Clean and groom the front yard. 4. Keep the kitchen sparkling clean with a fresh smell. 5. Clean and detail the bathrooms, too. 6. Clean all the windows in the house. 7. Do not allow closets, storage areas, or laundry rooms to look overcrowded or inadequate. 8. Depersonalize your space. Now that the house is ready‌ Walk through the house with the agent. Let them comment on practical improvements you should make in further readying the space. Small improvements can bring back great rewards in price. Buyers pay for move-in conditions. They also discount heavily for undesirable or unlivable conditions. Listen to your agent, and give them the best possible product to sell. Your bottom line will improve. Besides, remember that pride factor buyers like to see? It feels pretty good to know you improved your home and left it better than you found it. Ready to sell? Contact one of the real estate agents found in your local Homes & Land Magazine or on HomesAndLand.com. About Homes & Land Homes & Land is a leading integrated real estate media franchise founded in 1983 by Russ and Cheryl Haskins. retractable screens, will you be able to fully enjoy your home’s outdoor living spaces next spring? The answer is likely no. Why? Because flying and biting insects are probably keeping you indoors. But here’s a solution. While homeowners across the country are increasingly creating popular outdoor “rooms” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially made to be weather-proof, flying and biting insects often keep homeowners from using their new outdoor spaces. Retractable screens provide the perfect answer to these problems. By combining indoor and outdoor spaces, these innovative screen solutions enhance and promote our outdoor living experiences. They provide much needed shade and allow people to extend the time that they, family, and friends can enjoy their patios while keeping annoying, biting insects at bay. Large, motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of your home, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. The best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish your views or your home’s esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many of these retractable screen solutions can be seamlessly blended into virtually any architectural style. These retractable screens are available in a variety of different custom colors and wood grain finishes that help to coordinate your screens with your interior or exterior color schemes. The screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and be connected to your home’s automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection is most needed. So if you’re uncertain what to buy your family for Christmas this year, how about retractable screens from Screens of East Tennessee, creating a season of memorable out-of-door experiences with family and friends next year? December in the Garden D

ECEMBER is upon

us! Some of you are really excited about the holidays, and some of you are not. Whatever your position on Christmas and Hannukah, there may very well be days when you simply cannot deal with the holiday chaos any longer. For those days, here is a brief rundown of reasons to get out of the house: » You can still plant trees and shrubs as long as the ground isn’t frozen, and that doesn’t happen here very often. Newly planted trees and shrubs will continue to need water in order to survive the winter. If we go longer than a couple of weeks without rainfall, drag out the hose. » If your yard is dull and colorless, you can plant pansies. The ground is still warm, and they will look great next spring. If you don’t want to plant them in the landscape, set a few pots on your porch. It’s amazing how cheerful they look on gloomy winter days. » Clean up beds if you haven’t done that yet. This is especially important if you had

insect and disease problems. » Heavy layers of leaves will need to be removed from beds and lawns to prevent suffocation. Light layers can be run over by the lawn mower and left to decompose. » Dump the soil from terra cotta and cheaper ceramic pots into your flower beds, and store them in a protected location. Sturdier pots can be kept out and turned into winter decorations. Plant them with hardy plants, or fill them with greenery. » Don’t forget about the birds! Keep feeders clean and full, and keep baths rinsed. Metal and plastic baths can stay outside, but ceramic and clay will need to be drained and stored to prevent cracking. » Take a walk around your yard and see what you have available for holiday decorations. Magnolias, hollies, hemlocks, boxwoods, pines, and other plants are great for fresh greenery. Cut branches and immediately place in water. Woody stems should

be crushed on the ends to let in more water. They will last longer if you soak them overnight. » Don’t forget the nuts, seeds, and berries! Nandina berries, pinecones, rose hips, acorns, Magnolia seed pods, and a host of other things can be used for accents. Beauty berry can also provide unusual color to your decorations. » If you are going to buy a freshly cut Christmas tree this year, buy from someone you trust. Yes, I mean Meadow View. Many trees in box stores and tree lots are cut in late October or early November and will struggle to last through the holidays. Ours will be cut on November 17th in North Carolina at Hudler Tree Farms. We pick them out, so we know they are fresh and pretty. » Poinsettias are another plant that should be bought from someone reputable (cough, Meadow View), because they need special treatment. They don’t get that at box stores or warehouse stores. I watched a lady buy 25 big ones last year at a warehouse store, only to have them load them in the back of her truck. It was a cold day, and I can tell you they were dead by the time she got to the red light. Rule 1: Poinsettias won’t survive cold weather. Anything below 50 degrees will injure it, even if the exposure time is short. Rule 2: Poinsettias are fragile and should not be placed anywhere they can be bumped, brushed against, or kicked. Rule 3: Poinsettias should always be placed in a sleeve for transportation, but the sleeve should be removed as soon as you get it home. Rule 4: Water when the top inch of soil is dry, but don’t let it stand in water. Poinsettias may be grown as a houseplant, but I don’t suggest trying to make it bloom again next year. It’s generally not worth the effort. And FYI, they are not as toxic as some people think. Some people/dogs/cats may be sensitive, however, so keep it away from anyone/anything that might eat it. » Keep us in mind as a source for gifts during the holidays. We have tools and gloves for the gardener, birding supplies for the bird enthusiast, and beautiful gifts for everyone else. If you don’t know what to get, we have gift certificates in any amount. That’s all for this month. If you have any questions or need more details on anything I talked about, give us a call or send an email to hello@ meadowviewgreenhouse.com. From all of us at Meadow View, we wish you a very happy holiday season!

Restoring Life After a Natural Disaster

V

ERY FEW of us will go a lifetime

without experiencing the impact of a natural disaster. Every day innumerable homeowners experience the devastating effects of floods, fire, tornadoes, and more. While the damage to our homes and personal possessions can be overwhelming, the most significant impact of these emergencies is on our families. The loss of a home, even if only temporary, is an experience that is difficult to describe. Fortunately, homes can be replaced or repaired and family life restored to normal. But the ease by which life is restored after a disaster is likely most dependent on the selection of the mitigation and restoration company you select. Before launching Ethos Restoration, our primary focus was to identify these needs and the response to those needs that people impacted by disasters experience. And we went a step further. We asked ourselves how we would want to be treated if we were the victims. The answers to all of those questions led to the creation of Ethos Restoration. Ethos Restoration is a full-service emergency response company that specializes in water, fire, and smoke damage mitigation. Ethos Restoration is large enough to meet the needs of our clients but small enough to retain the strong family influence that is the foundation of our company and that families in need appreciate so much when disaster strikes. Available 24/7, Ethos Restoration provides: » Damage evaluation » Demolition » Reconstruction » Site clean-up » Smoke & soot repair » Odor removal » Board-ups » Content cleaning & packing » Mold & water remediation & mitigation » Sewage back-up » Tree damage » Wind, storm, lightning & tornado damage Should your family ever experience a natural disaster, I invite you to experience the Ethos Restoration difference and discover what our family can do for your family.

Five Holiday Ideas for Every Home ERE ARE SOME sure-fire

tips to help your home embrace the holiday season!

1. Candles!

Candles are appropriate in many rooms in your home. Nothing softens a room more than the soft glow of candlelight! Tall and tapered, short votives, star shaped - colors and scents abound! Remember groupings of varying heights will be your key to a successful candle display!

like the twinkle of hundreds of tiny white lights. The smallest of plants to the largest will come alive when you add a few inexpensive strands of white lights. Also, consider draping white lights inside silver netting or garland, and wrap your staircase in a fabulous and unique new look.

3. Chic table tops!

Setting a beautiful table can set the mood for all your holiday entertaining. Try adding bows to the stems of wine glasses. Fold napkins in a special way, and tie them together with a gold tassel. Use gold or brass chargers under your special china, and pull it all together with a table runner and a wonderful holiday floral or greenery arrangement.

4. Merry mantles!

2. Sparkle!

Mirrors, silver and gold ornaments, picture frames, and even candlesticks will help your room shine. Don’t be afraid to mix metals. And by all means get out that antique silver, polish it up, and put it center stage! Nothing says “holidays”

It all starts with a theme! Possibilities might include your prize collection of antique Santas, snowmen, birdhouses, or reindeer. Whatever theme you select, use different shapes and sizes to create visual interest. Unify your display with garland, ivy, magnolia leaves, or anything else that is soft and easily draped.

5. Festive fruits and vegetables!

Put the “green” in your holiday decorating by using nature’s bounty in a decorative way. Adding cloves to oranges, limes, or lemons will create a beautiful and fragrant pomander. Simply stacking fresh lemons or limes in a tall glass hurricane can make a truly impressive decorative statement. Decorating Den Interiors is here to help! Make a Christmas Wish List… for Your New Custom Home

Home

Jenny Blalock

Licensed General Contractor

YOU’VE COMPLETED your holiday

gift list for friends and family. Now what about making a gift list for your new custom home that you’ve been postponing? A room-by-room wish list of what you’d love to have in your dream home. If you’re thinking about a new custom home for 2016, January, the month of resolutions, is a great time to start the planning process and the ideal time to create your dream home wish list. With your home the center of holiday activities, what better time to consider all of the new features your new home would have? You can also make note of what needs updating, what frustrates you, and what simply no longer works for your family and your lifestyle. As you’re welcoming friends, family, and kids home from college, imagine seeing your home through their eyes. Chances are you’ll see things that should be changed or updated but that you’ve grown so accustomed to that you no longer notice them. Your wish list might also include a better alternative for out-of-town guests than an air mattress in the living room. As you’re cooking, think about what doesn’t work in terms of storage, layout, lighting, appliances, and how your kitchen looks and “lives.” As you’re entertaining this holiday season, think about the spaces in your home and how they’re used. For instance, do you feel cramped for space, yet rarely use your living room, and would a new floor plan make better use of your living spaces and even create space for an extra bath or powder room? Would you love to have an outdoor fireplace or a beautifully open kitchen? Think about the feel of your home, too. Is it comfortably warm, or are you paying outrageous utility bills so family and guests won’t feel the chilly drafts from low efficiency doors and windows? Home builder and owner of Luxe Homes and Design, Jenny Blalock, has been designing and building custom homes for 14 years. Jenny has the knowledge and hands-on experience

to help you achieve your dreams. With careful planning and an extra dose of creativity, you’ll be surprised by how far you can stretch your budget to accomplish

everything on your wish list. So if you think 2016 might be your year to build, get started on your new home wish list today. Then, come January, share your list with us, and let’s see what we can do together to make your wishes come true. Why postpone enjoying the ideal home that can be yours in the months ahead? Call Jenny Blalock today at 865-755-4680 or email jenny@luxehomesdesign.com to set up a free, no-obligation consultation.

A Season for Remembering W

HEN I THINK back on the

last several years, I sit in awe and wonder at the many ways our Lord interacts with us. I want to take a moment and share a few precious family stories in hopes that your memory is also refreshed as we remember to give thanks to the One that continues to work in all our lives. Seven years ago we visited a company in Arizona we had dreams of expanding into Tennessee. As much as we loved what we saw, we simply couldn’t rationalize starting a new business with little savings in the midst of an economic depression. So, we literally prayed, “Lord, we’d love to do this, but it seems impossible right now. If we are supposed to do this, could you send us a really BIG sign?” We arrived in Knoxville to find our new license plate for a recently purchased van in our mailbox. Printed in large letters were the company name and the date we visited them in Arizona.

tile & grout

We started the business. In June 2012, I had a large thyroid cancer removed, and as a result, I lost a vocal cord. I was unable to speak for almost eight months. One afternoon my small group leader said he felt led to pray for “healing.” He did, and that very day I began to get my voice back. I still have just one working vocal cord, but somehow I am able to speak. My doctor remains amazed and doesn’t understand how I have such a strong voice. He is skeptical about my “story” but thrilled nonetheless. My son was in fifth grade and longing for a friend. He has a hard time socially because he has Asperger’s Syndrome, but he was lonely and desperate to have a buddy at school. He prayed several nights in a row for God to send him a “Christian friend.” The following week a new boy started school. He ended up in Nathan’s class and sat right beside my son. That was two years ago, and they became fast

friends and still are. And, for those that don’t appreciate God’s sense CO-OWNER of humor, the John boy’s name is Fitzwilliam Christian. These are just a few of the dozens of stories I could share of how God has answered prayer in our lives. I pray you have your own stories and share them with your friends and family. May the joy and peace of our Savior overwhelm us as we celebrate the real and ever-present help of our Lord Jesus Christ. Merry Christmas!

How Many Ways Are There to Clean an Oriental Rug? TRUTH BE TOLD,

probably hundreds of methods. As many as the human mind can conjure up. I’ve heard of Oriental rugs being washed on the driveway of a home using a garden hose, dishwashing detergent, and a stiff broom. Some O r i e n t a l r u g s, while still on a hardwood floor, have been cleaned in place, using the same methods as those used to clean wall-to-wall carpeting. Then there are the rugs that are hung in the backyard and beaten with a broom. There may be hundreds of ways to clean an Oriental rug, but based on decades of experience, and after considerable input from Oriental rug experts, including rug weavers themselves, there’s only one way to clean them thoroughly and safely, and that is by washing them. The problem for homeowners, however, is that an 8x10 rug can weigh several hundred pounds when wet and is nearly impossible to wash by hand. That’s why we designed our very own rug spa that uses our proprietary 11-step washing process that will thoroughly and safely wash your fine Oriental rugs. Our highly specialized process allows us to safely move your rugs throughout our facility through our multiple step inspection process, dye stabilization test, pre-vacuuming, pre-conditioning, washing, water extraction, pH neutralizing, drying, grooming and combing, fringe cleaning, post-vacuuming, and inspection. As is plain to see, it’s virtually impossible to duplicate this washing process on your driveway, in your home, or in your backyard. In fact, many of these alternative methods can actually permanently damage your fine Oriental or area rugs by abrading them on concrete surfaces, causing the dyes to migrate (bleed), or by adversely changing your rug’s pH. Not a DIYer project, Oriental rug washing is best left to an experienced professional – that is, if you value your rugs and your back. With just a few weeks before holiday guests begin arriving, isn’t it time to call Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning for all your upholstery, carpet cleaning, and rug washing needs?

Thank You Volunteers!

HEN RANDOM ACTS OF FLOWERS first blossomed as

a simple idea eight years ago, no one could have been prepared for the unprecedented growth we have seen since. Three new branches later, the Knoxville location remains the flagship facility – and for good reason. Random Acts of Flowers Knoxville is fortunate to work with a volunteer base filled with dedicated and hard-working people. This year they helped us weather a major move, produced more floral arrangements in a single month than had ever been done before, and volunteered more time than in any previous year. The work doesn’t end when the carts filled with flowers go rolling out the doors either. Our volunteers are quick to help us clean and organize our warehouse, wash vases and flower buckets, pick up new floral donations from around the city, sort through and compost unusable floral donations, and even help us keep a stock of ready-made bows. Most days volunteers outnumber staff in the workshop five to one. Eager to make a positive impact on their community, our volunteers

come to us for different reasons. Some volunteer for the social aspect or come in with service groups, some donate flowers from the memorial of a loved one and continue to volunteer in their honor, and others have been recipients of Random Acts of Flowers bouquets themselves. Many of our volunteers simply find floral arranging therapeutic. Whatever the reason, each of our volunteers is critical to carrying out our mission of spreading joy where it is most needed. As the year comes to a close and we look back on everything we have to be thankful for, our dedicated volunteers top the list. May they each know just how valued they are! For more information about becoming a

Random Acts of Flowers recycles and repurposes flowers by engaging dedicated volunteer teams to deliver beautiful bouquets and moments of kindness to individuals in healthcare facilities across the country. busy time of year! All the shopping, decorating, entertaining, and traveling the weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year’s can be anything but relaxing. The shift in family schedules and routines, re-arrangement of your home’s décor, and holiday visitors may put a strain on your dog, causing him distress. A dog under stress might change personality as he loses his coping mechanisms. Often the reaction is avoidance with or without vocalization. Negative effects of stress on your dog may include increased sleep time, decreased appetite, and behaviors that are out of context or compulsive. Vomiting, diarrhea, and skin problems are physical signs of stress. Behavioral signs include lip and paw licking, panting, trembling, and flattened ears. Continued stress may also suppress the immune system. Dogs recognize and react to anxiety in their owners. Don’t be a perfectionist; reduce your own stress level. Avoiding the manifestation of stress during the holidays requires vigilance and common sense. Watch for triggers

of stress. Be alert to your dog’s body language and remove the stimuli for him. Don’t put that deer antler costume on your dog. If a visiting child tries to hug him, call the child away from the dog. Provide a place for the dog to escape, safely and quietly, making sure he knows he’s not being punished. Set aside private time for you and your dog to just sit and enjoy each other’s company. The holidays center on socialization with friends, family, and loved ones. Just as you spend time socializing with your family and friends, a sociable dog finds it revitalizing to spend time with canine friends. When you go shopping for the day, allow the dog time to spend with other canine friends. Bring the dog to day camp at Ms. C’s, which is offered Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm, with Thursdays being special “party days.”

Marty Balin

I

T’S DIFFICULT to believe that the

iconic San Francisco band, Jefferson Airplane/Starship, took off 50 years ago, but it’s true. To commemorate the milestone this month, the band’s co-founder and key songwriter, Marty Balin, is releasing a twoCD set, “Good Memories,” of newly arranged old hits spanning the entire life and mutation of the band. In February, he’s releasing a CD of all new songs that he’s written entitled “The Greatest Love.” I recently called Marty at his Florida home to chat about both CDs, whether or not there would be any new work from his former band mates, and what his future plans are. We started off by talking about whether he had any idea the band would be remembered and listened to for 50 years and counting. “No, I had no idea. Who would’ve ever thought that far ahead anyway? It was fun to redo them all. I’ve been doing some of these things live. The audiences loved it and have wanted it on a record. It happened to be the 50th anniversary, and it was a good idea. Put ‘em on a record. Why not? And it was a good set up for my next new record, you know?” With “Good Memories,” Marty tackles the classics with some different spins arrangement-wise. I asked him if these are variations that existed back when he originally wrote the songs or if they are relatively new. “They’re not new ideas. They’re how I do them now, live. I don’t have all these 56

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE December 2015

instrumental breaks and everything – none of the musical interludes. I give them the body of the song. I make it a ‘song’ song. I don’t go off on all these jams.” Speaking of the fans being the catalyst behind “Memories,” he said, “They inspired me to do it. They’d call out these old tunes, and I started doing them. People were getting off on it. It coincided with ‘50 years later,’ so we said, ‘Hey, let’s spit it out. What the hey?’” As for “The Greatest Love," I asked Marty to tell fans what this album is, from his perspective, and what he hopes they get from it. “I hope that they get the same joy I get out of the songs. The connection I get when I do them live with people is why I put them on the record. The fans wanted to have them on record – or download them – whatever you want to call it. They got the joy out of hearing them live. I get the joy out of doing them that way. The reaction from the audience has been great. It showed me that they accepted the songs. It’s good to get them all down while they’re hot.” Marty is always asked if there’s any chance of Jefferson Starship getting together to do another album. I knew it would annoy him to be asked the question, but I knew readers would want to know, so I asked him. “No, I don’t think so, because Grace doesn’t ever want to sing again, and the other guys have their own projects. Hot Tuna’s got Hot Tuna, and Paul’s got his Starship. If we all got

together, I’d have to be in charge. I can’t do the other people’s way of doing things. I don’t think they want to get together. Why try to do it again anyway? We’ve been offered millions if we’d come together, but nobody’s gonna do it, you know? That’s why everybody’s doing their own thing. They’ve got their own interests that they want to do. Me? I’m into new songs and new music – living some of the old songs but mixing in new stuff. “I like to be running my own show, because people call songs out from the audience. ‘Yeah! Okay! I’ll do that one!’ I’ll go right into it. I don’t have to wait for people to change guitars or have an instrumental break in every song. I just bam, bam, bam, hit ‘em with the songs. People say, ‘Wow! You did 30 something songs in that set!’ Well, gee, when you don’t have an instrumental in every song... I’ve been doing two-and-a-half to three hour shows, and people ain’t walkin’ out on me, because I give them a great variety of tunes – one right after another. I don’t waste time. I’m not losing any audiences by doing a long show.” Tour plans? “I’m just waiting until both albums are out and then will go out and do a bunch of gigs,” he said. You can follow up on those tour developments – as well as all things Marty Balin – at www.MartyBalinMusic.com. You can read the full interview with him at www. boomerocity.com.

Pet Care

Four Ways to Make Sure Your Pet Has a Safe Holiday T

HOUGH EVERYONE cherishes

the holidays as an opportunity to catch up with friends and family, they don’t always feel like a vacation. AAA estimates that more than 98.6 million people travel during the holidays each year – meaning that neither trains, planes, or automobiles are going to protect you from the crowds. Hosting guests isn’t a breeze either, and no amount of online shopping seems to eliminate the need for a last-minute trip to the mall. Whether you’re traveling across the country to visit in-laws or staying close to home, it’s important not to forget about your pets. To ensure a safe, enjoyable season for your fourlegged friends, keep these pet safety tips in mind from the experts at DogVacay. 1. Be smart about stocking stuffers. Filling up your pet’s stocking can be fun, but it’s important not to get carried away. When buying special treats for the occasion, remember to check for any recalls. When shopping for toys, avoid items that have stuffing or fuzz that pups can get into and eat. If you live in a city or have neighbors, you should also be careful when buying anything that makes a lot of noise in case your pet gets carried away with the holiday spirit. Finally, remember your pet can overeat, too – keep treats in moderation to avoid an upset tummy. 2. Don’t celebrate with a bang. New Year’s Eve is a popular time for fireworks, and as pretty as they are, many animals are frightened by the loud noises. Shield your pet from these outside distractions by closing the curtains and playing some familiar background noises – like the stereo or television – to dampen the

fireworks outside and soothe your pet’s anxiety. 3. Decorate without the dangerous décor. Decorations in homes with pets must be planned with care. Poinsettias, for example, are a holiday staple, but unfortunately they are highly toxic for cats and dogs alike. Tinsel can also be harmful if swallowed and causes digestion problems in both dogs and cats. Before hanging any decoration, make sure other pet owners haven’t experienced complications. If you do find poinsettias and other holiday ephemera irresistible, make sure it’s placed high and out of reach. Same goes for holiday sweets and things like chocolate. No one wants

to spend Christmas dinner at the vet. 4. Keep an eye on doggie doors. When guests arrive at your home, doors will be opening and closing constantly. If you’re worried about a potential jail break, it may be helpful to download a pet tracking app like Tagg, which attaches to your pet’s collar and lets you track them. That way you can find your pet at any point in the festivities, even if they do manage to get loose outdoors. The holidays are an exciting time for families everywhere, and with just a little extra planning on your part, you can make this season enjoyable for all the people and pets in your family.

Each year the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance recognizes outstanding persons, projects, and organizations working to preserve our heritage for future generations. This year our 10 award winners are celebrated for their contributions to historic preservation, and here are their stories. Fo l k s d r i v i n g t h ro u g h d ow nt ow n Morristown a couple of months ago noticed something new and refreshing on the side of one of its historic Main Street buildings. The Coca-Cola ghost sign, which had been faded for so long, was suddenly bright and vibrant again. This is thanks to a program started by Coca-Cola Consolidated based in Charlotte, NC. Restoring ghost signs such as these can rally communities, increase pride in buildings, and revive memories that multiple generations hold dear. If you had been passing through Chestnut Hill in 1911, you would most likely have stopped at the A.J. Bush General Merchandise Store and found it filled with food, household goods, clothing, farm equipment, and even live animals. The store became a gathering place for the community, and served it as a general store for 100 years. After sitting vacant for a decade, Bush Brothers and Company began restoring the building in 2008 to become a visitor’s center for their company. Since 2010, the visitor’s center has welcomed more than 600,000 visitors to its general store, museum, and Family Café. What a great example of pairing historic preservation and heritage tourism! One of the most important actions that can be taken on behalf of historic preservation is to raise awareness of history itself, especially at the local level. Duay O’Neil is a name familiar to many people in Cocke County and beyond. As a teacher, historian, journalist, and community servant, Duay has been telling the story of Cocke County for decades. He writes a weekly column for the Newport Plain Talk, is a popular speaker, and has been recognized by proclamation by the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. We thank Mr. O’Neil for keeping these stories alive for new generations. The Old Morgan County Jail was built in 1930 but had been left standing empty for several years and fell into serious disrepair. Lee Aslinger took on the project of renovating the landmark, which now houses the Morgan County Archives and the collection of the Morgan County Genealogical and Historical Society. The renovation could not have happened without Lee, who removed drop ceilings, uncovered brick walls, revealed an original archway, and restored the original 58

door, among many other things. Bonnie Peters has devoted herself to historic preservation in Union County. Since retiring, Bonnie has written three hardcover and five soft cover books on the county’s history, has conducted genealogy workshops, advocated for cemetery preservation, and kept the histories alive. She has also worked on preserving historic structures, including the Maynardville Bank, her father’s monument shop, the Mark Monroe Corn Crib, and the historic Oak Grove School in Sharp’s Chapel. Bonnie has served as Union County Historian since 1994. The Lyric Theatre has been a part of Loudon, in one form or another, since about 1912. For more than a decade, the Loudon Merchants and Property Owners Association and local volunteers have chipped away at restoring the charming old theatre to its former glory and establishing it as a center for the performing arts. An integral player in this effort is the Lyric Theatre Company, which launched their first production at the historic theater two years ago. This, in turn, has helped the association to secure funding for more improvements. Ms. Helen Kinzer’s house at 802 Mayes Avenue in Sweetwater had fallen on hard times. The talk around town was that demolition was eminent. But this house had a next door neighbor who loved old houses and happened to take an interest. Those neighbors were Carol and Vijay Randive, who purchased the home in December 2014 and began renovations. Most of the windows were saved, the floors refinished, and original fireplaces and built-ins were kept. There is still some work to be done, but now people don’t ask when the home will be torn down. Instead they say “thank you” to the Randives for restoring the

old house they thought had no future. What do you do when you want to tell the story of a place, but the place is no longer there? With today’s technology, you create a virtual experience. Anyone who knows just a little bit about Oak Ridge history has heard about K-25. The plant was designed to use the gaseous diffusion process to enrich uranium during World War II. The mile-long, U-shaped plant covered 44 acres and was the largest roofed building in the world in its day. To tell the K-25 story to future generations, The Department of Energy and its cleanup contractor, URS | CH2M Oak Ridge LLC (UCOR), are preparing to launch the K-25 Virtual Museum website, which will ensure this story continues to be told in an innovative, new way. At the historic English colony of Rugby, you will find Walton Court, the home of Rick Murphy and George Zepp. The current residence is a reconstruction of the original home George’s great-grandfather built in 1881. Tragedy struck in 1988, and that home burned to the ground. Thanks to a year-long reconstruction project undertaken by Rick and George, Walton Court is back and just as beautiful (if not more so). Built on the original foundation and guided by preservation architect Michael Emrick of Nashville, the spirit of the original home and that of the Rugby colony carries on. When the property at 3305 Bunker Hill Road in Knox County was listed for sale, the house sitting on the property was considered less important than the lot itself. The midcentury modern home had been neglected for so long that a jungle had grown up around, on, and inside the structure. The previous owner simply walked away and left everything to ruin. John and Aldris Kerr saw potential and worked with the Brewer Ingram Fuller architectural firm to transform that jungle into a lovely and exciting modern home. View photos and learn more about past winners at www.knoxheritage.org/etpa.

The East Tennessee Preservation Alliance works to preserve the structures and places with historic or cultural significance in Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Hamblen, Jefferson, Knox, Loudon, Monroe, Morgan, Roane, Scott, Sevier, and Union counties. ETPA partners with Knox Heritage to serve as the regional arm for preservation activities in these 16 counties.

As a business owner I receive calls every day from advertising reps asking me to spend money with them. Whether it’s print, radio or television, they all suggest that their advertising method is the best way to get my message out to potential clients. They have a high hill to climb, because Everything Knoxville already does a great job of finding potential customers for us. Everything Knoxville puts out a quality monthly publication that is mailed directly to homeowners. That means my customers pull the magazine directly out of their mailbox, making it more likely for them to read. We track our client phone calls from several advertising sources, and Everything Knoxville does better dollar for dollar than any other publication I’ve advertised in. Thanks Judy and Tom!

Park Your Ambitions Outside A T 65 YEARS OLD, I have

had the opportunity firsthand to experience the numerous rebranding efforts that sales professionals have undergone during the past four decades. First we were referred to as salesmen, which no doubt reflected the reality that there were very few women engaged in the industrial sales field. Later, as more women entered the sales force, we became salespeople and then sales specialists. Today we’re most commonly referred to as account representatives. So what’s changed? Very little, in fact. Despite past rebranding efforts, sales professionals remain far too focused on their own sales commissions and not on the potential results that they could produce for their clients. Now I’m not referring to every sales person, because the most successful sales people – those that earn far above the average – already understand what I’m about to say. The best advice I have for today’s account representatives, particularly the newest amongst us, is to park your personal

Business

“You’ll discover that when you focus 100% on your customers’ needs and not your own, you will be performing at your full potential and providing an experience that will not only differentiate yourself in the minds of your clients, but result in more referrals than you could ever imagine.” ambitions outside your customer’s door before entering. Forget all about last month’s sales, sales contests and incentives, and your ego. You might also consider shifting that professional selling skills course you recently completed into low gear. The fact is, most buyers are put off by these robotic sales techniques. You’ll discover that when you focus 100% on your customers’ needs and not your own, you will be performing at your full potential and providing an experience that will not only differentiate yourself in the minds of your clients, but result in more referrals than you could ever imagine.

Is this heresy? It might be if you or your company have invested thousands of dollars in a professional selling skills seminar. But does it work? You bet it does! And it resulted in earning the number one and 15 spots, out of more than 250 sales representatives nationally, in my first and second years with a Fortune 500 company. A counter-intuitive approach to sales to say the least, but choosing to focus entirely on your customers’ needs instead of your own will result in a level of success that will leave your peers scratching their heads – guaranteed!

Decisions, Decisions! JANUARY IS ALL ABOUT

decisions. Goals, resolutions, and changes that bring desired results. While that is good, it can also be much like going on a diet. Without developing healthy eating habits, as a consistent way of life, weight and health management are just momentary good ideas. Such it is with goals. Most people don’t just make lists in January and suddenly become task masters. There are a few consistent character traits that generally help to define those who are self-motivators and high-achievers.

What you see is what you get:

Most successful people are not afraid to think big. They pursue innovative ideas, then mix that drive with equal amounts of vision and strategy. While there are a lot of folks with big ideas, there are few who are able to execute a workable plan to make that vision become a reality. Be one of them. We achieve what we believe: Do you believe in yourself ? No one wakes up self- confident. They make decisions that require confidence. Important decisions are rarely easy nor do they always make sense,

yet with proper planning and counsel, you can do what you set your mind to doing. You must start by believing you can do it. You can.

Who is running ahead of you?

Have mentors. Experts are everywhere, pay attention to them. Competition is an excellent source of information, especially when it becomes a motivator instead of a threat. Learn why others are doing what they are doing, then personalize it with your own vision. Learn, but be different. Time is not equal: We all have the same 24 hours a day, yet those who are successful don’t try to do it all. They can’t, and they are willing to admit they can’t. They maximize their talents by being great at something. Honing in on those few areas where you excel should be a life-decision, not a fleeting idea. Those who are spread too thin rarely enjoy anything. Maximize your energy: One of the top resolutions each year is to be healthier. Not good; healthy habits are a way of life, not an annual resolution. Why set goals if you can’t muster up the energy to achieve them?

We don’t get time back; therefore, we should care for our bodies so we feel well and invest our time wisely. Don’t let poor energy zap your ability to get up and go. Decisions should be firm, declarative, decisive. As you begin another new year, let this be your year of bold confidence. Look back over 2015 long enough to take note of what held you back and be honest. People? Bad habits? Too much this, not enough that? This list can help you get started. Don’t let another year go by where you don’t take charge of your life and goals. Not only will you feel better, but you will perform better and establish a momentum that builds every day. Enough talk. It’s time for decisive action. Make decisions. Beth Townsend is a dynamic freelance speaker and writer and can be reached at 225.910.7426. Family Life

Share the Reason Behind Christmas Traditions with Your Family

A S YO U G O

about your Christmas traditions this holiday season, your children may ask why you do certain things such as hang stockings, sing carols, or drink eggnog. Here’s a rundown of some of the most popular Christmas traditions and how they came to be. Christmas Stockings According to one legend, there was a kindly nobleman whose wife had died, leaving the man and his three daughters in despair. The man lost his fortune, and the family had to move into a small cottage. This left his daughters with no dowries, and without this they couldn’t marry. Upon hearing of the girls’ needs, Saint Nicholas rode his horse to the nobleman’s house on Christmas Eve and threw three pouches of gold coins down the chimney, where they fell into the young girls’ stockings that had been hung by the fireplace to dry. The next morning the daughters woke to find their stockings contained enough gold for them to get married. After seeing his daughters married, the nobleman lived a long and happy life.

Christmas Caroling The custom of singing Christmas carols is said to have come from 13th century Italy, when a man named St. Francis of Assisi led songs of praise to express his joy for Christ coming to Earth. Tradition says it’s very bad luck to send carolers away empty handed. It’s customary to offer food, drink, or even a little money to the carolers. Yule Log Yule Logs are a pagan ritual that found itself among our Christmas rituals. Yule Logs are supposed to be cut from red oak trees and burned all of Christmas Eve and into Christmas Day. It’s customary to light the new log with a scrap of last year’s log. The scrap is kept under the homeowners’ bed to protect the home from fire and lightning during the upcoming New Year. Eggnog The history of eggnog can be traced to England in the 1700s. To keep warm during cold winters, a drink was developed that mixed warm milk and eggs together. It was served in a small, wooden mug called a noggin at tables in English taverns, and it was often used to toast one’s health. The drink

was most commonly enjoyed by the English upper class, yet it soon became a popular wintertime drink throughout Colonial America on special occasions. During the 1800s, eggnog became the celebration drink at Christmastime. The classic punch was always made in large quantities and served to guests. Eggnog remains a popular drink during the holidays. It’s hard to imagine a Christmas without a cup of eggnog to spice up the atmosphere. Poinsettia The poinsettia, with its bright red leaves, is often used as a Christmas decorative plant, and it’s sometimes given as gifts. Legend has it that a young child couldn’t afford to offer Christ a gift on Christmas Eve, so he picked some weeds from the side of a road in the belief that even his humble gift, given in love, would be worthy. When the weeds were brought in, they bloomed into red and green flowers. Wendy Jackson is a freelance writer based in Blount County, Tennessee. Accepting and Receiving Gifts Graciously

APPY HOLIDAYS!

I hope this month is filled with precious memories of times past, hope for a better tomorrow, and enjoyment in the moment. Of course the holidays can be such a sad time for many as they are without precious loved ones, which creates an increased measure of sadness during this time of year. May you each take many moments to quietly ponder who needs extra love this month. May you sit down with your families and pray and discuss what you can do to brighten someone’s day. No, you can’t wipe away another’s pain, but you can do so much to let others know you love them, care for them, and haven’t forgotten them or their loved ones. I’d like to challenge everyone to use this time of year as you celebrate what’s precious to you to bring light to others. I get many questions concerning gifts around this time of year. What is too expensive, what to buy and not to buy, what if someone buys for me but I didn’t buy for them, etc. May I suggest a few considerations to keep you focused on what’s important and 66

enjoy the gift of giving and receiving. » Deciding to buy something for someone should simply come from the desire to give for the sake of giving. For instance, you walk through a store and see something that reminds you of someone, and you think they’d love it. That’s a great time to give. You should never feel obligated to give to anyone. I’d never want anyone to buy something for me because they felt they should, would you? You should be touched when someone has taken the time and thought to give you a gift, but you should never expect one. » If someone gives you a gift, but you haven’t reciprocated, instead of feeling guilty, just be grateful and show your gratitude in words and deed. I don’t give gifts to only those who I believe have gotten me a gift. Surely none of us do. The gift of giving comes from the heart and desire to give and should be received with pure joy. Remember, the greater joy comes in the act of giving, not receiving. There’s no need for apologies when you haven’t reciprocated; rather, just be grateful. » You should consider the amount you spend

when choosing a gift. It creates discomfort when someone spends a large amount on someone they don’t have an intimate relationship with. Make sure your gifts are more about the thought than the money. » If someone has asked you not to buy for them or their children, please honor that request. You can show love in many ways outside of gift giving like giving service, cooking dinner for others, spending time with others, and simply meeting their needs. Purchased gifts are only one small way to give to others. Enjoy your holidays and make every day count. Love each other. Be kind. Thus lies the key to happiness.

more than one million practitioners in United S t a t e s ca n l e g a l l y p e r f o r m aesthetic injections such as Botox and Juvederm? It seems that just about every medspa, doctor’s office, dental office, and even massage studio offers these injections. Advertisements for these services in local magazines, radio advertisements, and mass mailings are also pervasive. Unfortunately, the aesthetics industry is poorly regulated, and many establishments that offer these services have little to no direct oversight by an experienced physician. As a result, patients may experience poor outcomes and are often confused about where to go. Dermatologists, plastic surgeons, and ENT facial plastic surgeons have aesthetics at the core of their training. Detailed knowledge of the intricacies of facial anatomy is necessary to provide superior outcomes and lessen the chances of potentially dangerous complications. This type of knowledge is learned through specialized residency training and honed through years of clinical experience. Training with top physician injectors in the world and regularly participating in physician led workshops and training courses helps to keep an injector up to date on the most advanced aesthetic techniques. Dermatologists are also the experts in diagnosing and treating skin conditions that may also be adversely affecting one’s appearance. As a board certified dermatologist with more than 15 years of experience in the aesthetic field, I feel duty bound to educate my patients. I encourage them to move beyond looking at aesthetic injections as a commodity. In other words, not how

much it costs for a unit of Botox or a vial of Juvederm. We shouldn’t be chasing lines or wrinkles. Instead, we should be seeking an individualized global improvement in one’s appearance employing all of the available treatments and advanced techniques. While there are many reputable aesthetic injectors in town, at Southeastern Dermatology, I personally perform all of the aesthetic injections. Whether you have been disappointed by previous outcomes or are just interested in learning more about aesthetic procedures, I invite you to experience firsthand the difference this kind of training and expertise makes.
