Marble Alley Lofts is an exciting, new, mixed-use development in historic downtown Knoxville that will be constructed in two unique phases. Phase one will feature 248 upscale apartment homes, and phase two, which is still in the design and planning stages, is proposed to be a blend of both office and retail spaces.

From the Publisher

IT HAS been almost 15 years

since Tom and I moved from the Chicago area to East Tennessee and now call it home. We love the lake and mountain scenery especially, in the autumn when temperatures are cooler and the landscape comes alive with fall color. Since moving to East Tennessee, we have seen quite a change in the greater Knoxville area, particularly downtown. The revitalization of Knoxville has made it a desired destination thanks, in part, to developers who had a vision and entrepreneurs who seized the opportunity. The arts are thriving, visitors are traveling to participate in our festivals and events, and more people are looking to reside downtown.

Our featured article this month highlights one such developer and his project, Marble Alley Lofts. This 248 unit apartment complex is the next step in Knoxville’s revitalization, and Gabriele Preston, Vice President of RAM Partners, LLC and the project’s property management agency, has outlined the specifics of this new downtown community and what it can mean for you and for Knoxville. It’s so exciting for me to see how our Knoxville area has changed during the last 15 years. Those of us that live here know how lucky we are to have such a vibrant place to call home. But if you have never experienced East Tennessee, I invite you to come and discover our corner of the world. Autumn is a great time to visit and, just maybe, you will consider making East Tennessee your home.

MARBLE ALLEY LOFTS The Next Step in Historic Downtown Knoxville’s Revitalization

M

ARBLE ALLEY Lofts is a new, exciting, and upscale mid-rise apartment community coming to life in the very heart of historic downtown Knoxville at 300 State Street. This new venture is the creation of developer Buzz Goss, who has described Marble Alley Lofts as a “transformative piece” in Knoxville’s evolving downtown landscape. Several developmental phases are planned, including residential apartments and retail and commercial spaces. Constructed by TDK Construction, Marble Alley Lofts has selected RAM Partners, LLC as its property management agency, which is directed by Ram Partners, LLC Area Vice President Gabriele Preston. EK: Tell us a little bit about this exciting new community. GABRIELE: Marble Alley Lofts will feature 248 one- and two-bedroom apartment

6

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE October 2014

homes of which a portion will be completed and ready for occupancy in the September to October 2015 timeframe. Our company, RAM Partners, LLC, will be responsible for leasing and managing the community. We have worked with and managed a number of other developments built by TDK Construction, who is one of our best clients. They have a strong commitment to unsurpassed quality and are very responsive to the evolution in architecture and the needs of the community’s residents. Every community they build seems to surpass their last. Their homes are functional and professionally designed with the latest multifamily living amenities. Like some of their other communities, Marble Alley Lofts will also feature granite kitchen and bath countertops, stainless steel appliances, and hard surface plank flooring in the living and dining areas. A majority of

our apartment homes will include additional special features such as built-in bookcases, kitchen islands, double sinks, and garden tubs in the master baths. Amenities include a saltwater swimming pool and generous indoor and outdoor gathering spots, including a game room with billiard and card tables. Flat screen televisions, computers, and a printer will be integrated throughout these spaces. EK: Who will Marble Alley Lofts appeal to? GABRIELE: Well, I think everyone, but especially those who work downtown or come here to be a part of the area’s unique ambiance. We’ve received numerous inquiries from people that want to live downtown but not in a student housing setting, and Marble Alley Lofts fits this demographic. It is a traditional mid-rise community that makes no special provisions for students. So, in other words, potential residents will have to meet the income and credit criteria

to qualify for an apartment home here. EK: Adequate parking can be challenging downtown, especially on game days. What are your plans to meet your residents’ parking needs? GABRIELE: There will be a five level private parking garage for our residents and their guests. Residents will never have to worry about where to park. In fact, they don’t have to own a car at all. EK: What do you mean they don’t have to own a car? GABRIELE: Residents can walk to get to nearly everything they need or desire, whether it’s to eat, buy groceries, go to the movies, or take care of their dry cleaning or banking. All of these conveniences are walkable. In fact, walkscore.com ranks Marble Alley Lofts a 92 out of 100, calling it a “Walker’s Paradise.” Plus there’s public transportation – the KAT bus or the free trolley – serving the major tourist attractions, and there’s a car rental business that will actually pick you up. EK: These apartment homes are still a year away from completion. Can someone reserve an apartment now? GABRIELE: Absolutely! In fact, we expect to pre-lease most if not all the homes before the building even opens its doors. Those that are interested can get on board by visiting our website at www.marblealleylofts.com and completing a Guest Card. A representative will be in touch with them to answer their questions and help them reserve a home. Also, if one is already renting an apartment at a RAM managed community, they can be given priority status at a discounted rate.

EK: Will people really lease an apartment before they can see a completed unit? GABRIELE: That’s a good question, and the answer is yes. The technology we utilize today is incredible. We hired a designer with an architectural background, and he has taken the construction plans and developed real life animated images and a video of what the apartment homes and building will actually look like. It’s amazing the level of detail, right down to the subway tiled backsplash in the kitchens. These images provide you with the actual look and feel of what the Marble Alley Lofts will become. You can view these images along with the floor plans on our website. We also have actual samples of the finishes, so if someone is interested, a representative can meet with them and show them the sample cabinetry, granite countertops, etc. EK: What everybody wants to know is how much the apartments will rent for? GABRIELE: Prospective residents are going to qualify for the best rental rates now. The earlier you rent an apartment home, the lower the price is, because as demand increases, so does the rent. Right now our smallest onebedroom homes rent for $979. The larger onebedroom homes, which are 742 square feet, are renting for $1,269, and the two-bedroom apartment homes start at $1,729. A parking space is also included with the rent. EK: If someone would like to speak with you or a representative, what is the best way to do that? GABRIELE: I would encourage those that are interested to go and look through our website first at www.marblealleylofts.com. One of

our Leasing Consultants, Candace or Tracy, will follow up on all Guest Cards. If someone would like to speak to me, they can either send me an email at gpreston@rampartnersllc. com or reach me at 865-288-0141. EK: Is there anything else you would like to add? GABRIELE: I really would like to invite all of your readers to discover for themselves all of the wonderful opportunities that Marble Valley Lofts can offer them. I am confident they will be just as impressed as I was when I was first introduced to this truly one-of-kind experience.

A GREAT many things come to mind when

I reflect back on our three decades in business. When my wife and business partner, Doris, and I first launched Fleetwood Photo & Digital in 1985, we couldn’t have imagined the changes and technological advances that would occur during the next 30 years. Opened originally as a one-hour photo shop, we’ve experienced many advances that required a great deal of change as we navigated through the new technologies that ushered in today’s new digital world. These new technologies, often referred to as “disruptive advancements” by the marketplace experts, were just as their name implies. But rather than ignore these advancements, we embraced them. The result was a host of new services we offered our customers that we couldn’t have even imagined a few years earlier. Despite all these changes, the one thing that hasn’t changed is the opportunity to interact and build lasting relationships with the most important component of our business, our customers. The same infants whose photos we developed 30 years ago are now bringing in their wedding photos and photos of their own newborns for further processing, framing, or any other specialty services we offer that were

unavailable three decades ago. Perhaps the greatest enjoyment we’ve experienced from our long tenure in business has been the opportunity to capture your family’s special moments and help you share them with future generations. Estate Plan

A COUPLE in their late 60’s asked me for some

retirement investment advice. But I discovered they had a more immediate need – they weren’t sure how their assets were titled, who their beneficiaries were, and they had no financial powers of attorney if one of them became ill. Before offering advice, we sat down together and created their Family Estate Organizer, as I do with most new clients. We created a tabbed binder that contains all of their relevant financial documents and information, including asset statements, beneficiary-designation forms, tax returns, wills, long-term care, life insurance policies, and even usernames and passwords. It also included a Survivor’s checklist outlining the steps their future executor would need to settle their estate. The power behind the Family Estate Organizer quickly became apparent. We discovered serious holes in their estate plan. The couple wanted to leave their IRA’s to their daughters, but they were not named as beneficiaries on their IRA’s, denying their daughters of important tax advantages. We also found that after the husband’s first wife had passed away, the husband’s joint life pension had never been updated to reflect his second, current wife as a beneficiary. I also discovered missed medical tax deductions. We made the necessary updates to their IRA beneficiaries and pension and amended their tax return, resulting in an additional $800 refund. Also, our attorney liaison added important financial powers of attorney to their estate plan. At the couple’s request, I reviewed their Family Estate Organizer with their daughter, who was also their executor. Estate planning is for everyone, not just for the rich. Our Family Estate Organizer is the first step in making sure your future wishes are carried out. It will save your loved ones future heartache, and it will save taxes, perhaps now and certainly in the future. Call today for a complimentary appointment, and take advantage of our $79 special offer to get your financial life organized!

The American Dream B

UYING A home is the American

dream. For many, building a custom home feels like an unobtainable dream. Building a custom home isn’t necessarily more expensive than buying a newly built or existing home, but it does require more planning. When someone considers building a home, there are many factors to consider. But how do you know where to start? Should you find the lot or the floor plan first? Should you use a stock floor plan or meet with an architect? When should you meet with a lender? How do you know which builder is the right choice? You don’t have to make these decisions on your own. Connecting with a residential Realtor and builder team experienced in working with semi custom buyers is imperative. To illustrate, buyers often come to me with their floor plan of choice. A picturesque rancher, nothing obscene in size, and yet the floor is 90 wide by 120 deep. So what’s the problem? The problem is most West Knoxville lots are 70 wide by 140 deep. What if you found the lot, then chose a floor plan. Would that make it easier? Oftentimes a buyer will scour the MLS, find the perfect lot, then call their trusty Realtor (insert myself ) to procure a contract. But once they’re under contract, they can’t find a floor plan that fits on the lot. Yet again they are back to square one. So what should you do? Find the floor plan or the lot? The answer is that they are equally important and should be decided in conjunction. Using a Realtor/builder partnership provides the ability to analyze floor plan specifications while simultaneously evaluating salability, feasibility, and affordability. Things move quickly in real estate. You can wait too long and miss an opportunity, or you can wait to act and watch construction costs soar. When is it too soon to start planning? The answer is it’s never too soon! Call us for a free, no risk consultation, and start living your American dream today.

Random Acts of Flowers Leaves Impact on Knoxville Community

D

U R I N G T H E last few

months, Random Acts of Flowers (RAF) has celebrated many milestones. More than 40,000 bouquets have been delivered and more than 42,000 vases have been recycled, with the monthly bouquet delivery numbers on track to surpass those of the previous year. The weight of these numbers is astounding, especially when considering the positive effect on the lives of people impacted. Individuals are influenced not only by receiving a bouquet, but could also learn about RAF through participation in a vase drive, by donating flowers, or by donating to RAF fundraisers such as the Annual Fund. It is this “circle of giving” that allows RAF to continue serving individuals in area healthcare facilities. The mission at RAF is simple: through the vital efforts of approximately 50-60 volunteers per week, donated flowers are collected from weddings, memorial services, special events, grocery stores, and churches to be repurposed into beautiful bouquets. These bouquets will then be delivered by volunteers to individuals in area hospitals, nursing homes, and hospice care facilities.

14

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE October 2014

“It’s hard for people to grasp the value of what we do at RAF until they come along on a delivery and see that you didn’t just make someone smile, but you have brightened their whole week,” said Larsen Jay, founder/CEO of Random Acts of Flowers. All of the resources at RAF are used in the most efficient way as to spread as many smiles as possible. This effort is not possible without the Annual Fund drive, which will be held during the entire month of October. These in-kind and financial donations from members of the Knoxville community ensure the ongoing success of RAF’s mission fulfillment. RAF has been spreading joy for more

than five years and has grown to include several branches across the nation, with several more branches in the works. However, RAF truly began in Knoxville and is a local treasure. The compassion of the loyal volunteers, combined with the steadfast support of the hardworking board of directors, has allowed RAF to achieve its mission of delivering moments of hope to thousands of area healthcare patients every year. To make a donation to the 2014 Annual Fund and learn more about Random Acts of Flowers, call 865.633.9082 or visit www.RAFKnoxville.org.

TRIGGER HIPPY

Featuring Joan Osborne, Jackie Greene, Steve Gorman, Tom Bukovac, and Nick Govrik

OCTOBER 26 • 8PM BIJOU THEATRE

TRIGGER HIPPY covers a lot of ground

on its self-titled debut album. Cruise through the 11 tracks from this well-credentialed Nashville quintet, and you’ll hear propulsive rock, gritty blues, heart-searing soul, sinewy grooves, sublime vocal harmonies, and a rich, earthy sensibility steeped in Americana roots. What to call it? Drummer and co-founder Steve Gorman favors “a rock band that can jam.” These musicians can certainly do that. Gorman, of course, also co-founded The Black Crowes more than 25 years ago and is considered one of the best rock drummers of his generation, playing not only with the Crowes, but also with Jimmy Page and Stereophonics, among others. Singer Joan Osborne has released seven albums since her

triple-platinum 1995 debut, Relish, and its Top 5 hit “One of Us.” She’s also collaborated with The Dead, Phil Lesh & Friends, and Motown’s Funk Brothers, with a featured role in the film Standing in the Shadows of Motown. Singerguitarist-keyboardist Jackie Greene, who performed with The Black Crowes during the band’s 2013 tour, has seven solo albums to his credit and has logged time in Phil Lesh & Friends, among others. Tom Bukovac is a first-call Nashville cat who won five consecutive MusicRow Session Guitarist of the Year awards, while bassist Nick Govrik performed in his former band, Highwater, and played more recently with singer Mike Farris. Addressing a New Era in Security:

How to Protect Your Business from the Inside Out DURING THE first 43 days of 2014, the Identity

Theft Resource Center said 91 data breaches were reported by companies across the country. Many of these companies were small businesses, family medical practices, or local restaurants that never thought they’d be cybercrime victims. Undoubtedly, businesses of all sizes are potential targets for cyber criminals. For small business owners, one attack can mean life or death for the future of their business. According to the National Small Business Association, a single cyber-attack costs a small business an average of $8,000 to recover from (and doesn’t include the incalculable damage done to the company’s reputation). Historically, small business owners have focused their security prevention on their physical domains, but, with the lines between physical and digital security having blurred during the last decade, it’s critical for them to rethink their 21st century security strategies. Here are some helpful tips to more effectively protect yourself, your assets, and your loyal customers from the wide range of physical and digital threats: » Make sure your employees are informed. Your employees are your first line of defense. They should be up to date on all company security measures and aware of the vulnerable digital and physical areas in your business. Keeping them informed ensures they know how to protect your business and alert you should a problem arise. » Increase the strength of your passwords. Complex passwords have a significantly greater chance of tripping up hackers. » Improve the traditional security system. An interactive solution can help mitigate threats with all-in-one security and automation capabilities that combine video surveillance with activitytriggered alerts. This allows you the freedom to monitor and control your business with a webenabled device from any location. » Erase old hard drives. While your business may not have any use for outdated systems, the information stored on hard drives is valuable to would-be criminals. Before you throw out that old computer or copy machine, be sure to erase the hard drive. While many small business owners may think cyber criminals aren’t interested in businesses their size, the reality is small businesses require the same strategic physical and digital protection as major corporations. Following the above steps can help you prevent the significant financial and reputational damage that comes with a security breach.

Impact Investing

(Socially Responsible Investing) Allocating assets to help the world… and your portfolio. Presented by Ali Swofford “DO WELL BY DOING GOOD.” In the financial arena, it is often written or spoken in reference to impact investing – also known as socially responsible investing. A CHANCE TO BE AN ACTIVIST. Maybe you don’t think of yourself as an activist; however, many investors around the world are choosing to be economic activists through socially responsible investing. The fact is that sometimes a corporation or business can generate large-scale environmental or social returns for a community that non-profit organizations would be hard-pressed to match. Socially responsible investing means allocating assets into private sector opportunities which encourage financial returns while advocating ethical, environmental, or human rights campaigns. THE DEMAND IS THERE. Many investors affirm sustainability through their portfolio choices. The companies must meet an interesting challenge as they seek to serve this expanding investor niche. The opportunities have more than doubled since 2001.1

few years ago impact investing was getting a bad rap. The word on the street (Wall Street) was that your choices were limited and performance was not impressive. Take a Deep Breath THE ARRIVAL of fall brings

with it much apprehension for those with chronic lung problems or allergies. Pollen can be just as bothersome in the fall as in the spring for those with allergies, but breathing issues in the fall can be difficult and even dangerous for people with persistent, long-standing lung complications. Traditionally autumn is known as the time of year when the lungs are predominant. Fall is the time when underlying lung conditions are most likely to be revealed by our experience of symptoms, but it is also the time when nourishing and healing of the lungs can be most effective. There is an optimum moisture level for the lungs to function at their best. Excessive congestion and phlegm of course are associated with various types of infections, but often the dryness of the fall air can be an impairment as well. We can help mitigate this dryness by avoiding hard, dry baked goods. Flour products in general tend to have a drying effect on the body, but especially the lungs. On the other hand, unprocessed whole grains, especially brown rice, are not only nourishing for the lungs but can be prepared with liberal amounts of water that is absorbed into the grain, thereby avoiding the drying

effect. Vegetables that nourish the lungs advantageously include daikon radish, cauliflower, turnips, and cucumber. Perhaps the most beneficial food for the lungs is lotus root, an aquatic plant that can be delicious in soups, stews, and side dishes. One would think that something as fundamental as breathing would be done correctly automatically. Unfortunately, many people have developed poor breathing habits. To determine if you are breathing deeply and fully, place the palm of your hand on your diaphragm, the muscle just below your rib cage and above your abdomen. As you inhale, you should feel your diaphragm expand outward. As you exhale, you can feel your diaphragm move inward as it forces the air out of your lungs. If you experience just the opposite, you can train yourself to do it correctly by practice. Fully oxygenating our blood through the lungs is an important aspect to virtually every health concern anyone might have. Care for the lungs, proper breathing technique, and a diet rich in antioxidants can go a long way toward protecting your long term health. So take a deep breath, pause, and reflect on how you treat your lungs.

Note: Consult your healthcare professional before making any dietary changes. These articles and recipes are not intended to diagnose or treat any illness.

has named its inaugural members, and one of them is Central High School teacher Valeta Norris. “I am honored to be able to represent our district,” said Valeta. “I hope I can bring insight and encourage communication. I’m excited to be a part of this group and see how we can impact education in Tennessee.” Chosen by the State Collaborative on Reforming Education (SCORE) out of 350 applicants, the 22 members of the Tennessee Educator Fellowship will serve one-year terms in which they’ll study student achievement and teacher effectiveness. They’ll also be liaisons between schools and policymakers so Tennessee can arrive at the best ways to educate students. The fellowship will meet several times in Nashville during the course of the year. One of her first responsibilities as a Tennessee Educator Fellow will be to gather

Valeta started teaching in Knox County in 1989 and began at Central High in 2005. After spending two years as a TAP Master Teacher, she returned to Central last year. “My mother was a teacher, and she always told me she thought that I would enjoy it,” she said. “Mother is always right!” Valeta earned her degree in education from the University of Tennessee. Her days at school are busy but fulfilling. “The day is spent teaching, planning, grading, tutoring, collaborating with other teachers, and just getting to know my

students,” she said. Valeta says each year of teaching brings its own set of challenges. “As any teacher will tell you, no class is ever the same,” she said. “My job is to be able to help students make academic gains even when their lives are filled with turmoil. That is the most challenging part.” However, the chance to make a difference in young people’s lives makes the hard work all worth it. “I love the students!” said Valeta. “Each day is different, with new successes and new challenges. Our desire to give back to our community was instilled in both of us as children by the same grandmothers that are the inspiration behind Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop. Our “Pie It Forward” program is Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop’s “pie with a purpose” promotion that encourages the local community, together with Buttermilk Sky, to benefit non-profit agencies and charities that make differences in the lives of the people they serve. During October, Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop will donate 50 cents from each of Knoxville’s favorite Chewy Chocolate Chip mini-pie sold to Gethsemane International. The unique mission of Gethsemane International is to provide permanent solutions for the orphaned children of Kenya by creating Christian families. Instead of merely meeting physical needs of food and shelter, Gethsemane has seen the lives of children transformed by the love of home parents, a Christian education, siblings, chores, family devotions, and, most importantly, hope in Jesus Christ. No orphanages, no institutions. Gethsemane creates homes! To learn more, visit www.homes4children.org. We will also be donating a portion of the proceeds from every cup of coffee we sell during October to Casa de Apio, an orphanage in Brazil that our family had the opportunity to serve during a mission trip three years ago. The support for this orphanage is made possible in part through the generosity of our local coffee roaster, Spero Coffee Company, who shares not only our desire to serve these underprivileged children, but to give back to the community where their coffee is grown. Hellen Keller said “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much more.” Won’t you please join Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop and our partners to benefit worthwhile non-profit organizations, charities, and individuals? CHEAP TRICK OCTOBER 8 7:30 PM TENNESSEE THEATRE Cheap Trick may be one of the most covered bands of all time. Since the ‘70s, they’ve been blending elements of pop, punk, and even metal in a way that is instantly catchy and recognizable. With timeless classics such as “I Want You to Want Me,” “Surrender,” and “The Flame,” Cheap Trick is a musical institution. With more than 5,000 performances, 20 million records sold, 29 movie soundtracks, and 40 gold and platinum recording awards, the band was honored in October 2007 by the Chicago Chapter of NARAS (National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences) for their contributions to the music industry. Cheap Trick was featured in the John Varvatos Spring 2008 ad campaign. Anyone familiar with Comedy

Central’s The Colbert Report will note that Cheap Trick wrote and performed the theme song. The band has most recently performed their Dream Police album in its entirety along with an orchestra in select cities across the U.S. This innovative show also includes many other songs from the band’s extensive catalog, garnering them critical acclaim after performances in venues such as the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. Their most current release, The Latest (released on CD, vinyl and 8-track), has garnered glowing reviews worldwide and continues Cheap Trick’s reign as power-pop progenitors as they continue their legacy of more than 35 years in the music industry.

The Robin’s Nest Unique gifts for the garden and soul By Catherine Rector, Owner

I THINK what makes The Robin’s Nest so

unique is the time and careful consideration that goes into the gifts we select. More than just merchandise on a shelf, we only select items that I believe will amaze you. Gifts that the big box stores don’t carry. Gifts that the receiver will remember and cherish for many years to come. Or, as I like to say, “unique gifts for the garden and soul.” When we shop for our gifts, we don’t limit ourselves to the traditional gift marketplaces. We visit alternative sources often located in obscure places, many miles away. For instance, I recently completed a shopping trip to Amish country in remote Pennsylvania,

where I discovered a variety of items that our customers are already raving about. The Robin’s Nest features a wide assortment of gifts that we take great care in displaying. From gourmet foods and kitchen gadgets, to gardening tools, bird feeders and food, to fragrant candles and interior, exterior, and garden décor, fine art, chalk and clay paints, and antiques, you’ll discover a virtual treasure trove of gifts that will be sure to please even the most hard to buy for person on your gift list. I especially enjoy showing our customers our very unique line of Trapp Fragrance Candles that are much sought after and difficult to find. Our CeCe Caldwell’s brand of chalk and clay paints and finishes, which are available in a variety of money-saving sizes,

will help you transform your furniture and home décor pieces. Need a gift? Don’t settle for ordinary.

The Faces, the Fashions, the Feet, and the Fun for Fall 2014 OUR RESPONSE to all that’s new at The Lily Pad and in Sweetwater has been tremendous! Many of you have visited since the renovation of our store front and Sweet Soles, the new shoe boutique next door, has opened. For those who have not, consider this your invitation! We’d love to introduce you to Mary and her staff. As you step inside, you’ll be in awe of both the décor of her store and her selection of both shoes and unique gift items. The Lily Pad’s in full swing for fall. As always, we’re stocked with all that’s new and exciting for the best season of all… boot season! Even though the tunic and legging look is still at the top of everyone’s autumn wardrobe essentials, if you’re a sweater girl, this year’s looks are amazing! Look for lots of back details… exposed zippers, pleating, buttons, etc. Consider adding a piece of faux leather to your wardrobe this year. Whether you choose a skirt, leggings, slacks, or jacket, you’ll be right on target with even a bit of detailing on your sleeve or down the pant leg.

Look for lots of back details this season! Layering for fall is always a strong look; our days still tend to be warmer, and the crisp feel of evening requires an extra wrap. There are many styles to choose from this season… ponchos, oversized cardigans, fleece, and lots of jackets to ease you into the cooler days ahead. Black, white, and grey are definitely every designer’s choice for 2014, but we’ve added lots of color to make your neutrals come alive. Always remember… if you can’t use the neutrals near your face, they’re a good choice for the bottom, and add your color to complement the face. Scarves and jewelry are also easy choices for making neutrals pop! Renee Fisher has spent more than 25

Special Love for Special Needs DOGS MAY have special needs, just like people, but that does

not mean they should not live an active, fun life. One of the special needs seen in a few of our clients is epilepsy. A disorder of recurring seizures, epilepsy in dogs is not widely understood. Treatment for epilepsy is usually not begun until a seizure is severe or multiple seizures have occurred and a pattern is observed. The goal of treatment is to decrease the frequency, severity, and duration of the seizures. Medications used to treat epilepsy are given orally. The drugs most commonly used to control epilepsy are phenobarbital and potassium bromide (KBr), either used singly or in combination with each other, prescribed by the veterinarian. The drugs must be given every day, and once started, it is critical to NOT suddenly discontinue, skip a dose, or change timing of the medication. Living a normal dog’s life, including exercise and play, is crucial for special need dogs. Compassion and love are compulsory in caring for pets, particularly the special need guests at Ms. C’s B&B. Living on the premise allows the owners, John and JeanAnn Carrigan, to ensure guests with special medical needs are attended to at the proper time, day or night.

Celebrate Autumn at Honeysuckle Rose Boutique

THERE ARE a few times during the year when

the Great Smoky Mountains will appear more picturesque than they will in the autumn. While I enjoy their snow capped peaks in the winter and their mist shrouded summer mornings, fall is when our Smokies truly come alive with their very own and unique palette of colors that results from more than 100 species of native trees and more than 1,600 species of flowering plants. If you haven’t visited the Great Smoky Mountains, Cades Cove, or other natural attractions, or if you haven’t visited recently, I would like to extend a special invitation to you to discover this spectacular gift of nature that I’m proud to call home. I would also like to extend my personal invitation to have you visit a one-of-a-kind shopping experience in historic Wears Valley, in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, called Honeysuckle Rose Boutique. You will discover what so many others have described as one of the most extraordinary shopping venues that you’ll likely encounter in your visit to the Smokies. Filled with gifts for all occasions, home décor items, women’s accessories, jewelry, handbags, gourmet foods, candles, and more, Honeysuckle Rose Boutique offers you truly unique items that you’re not likely to find elsewhere, all beautifully displayed in colorful vignettes throughout this former countryside home. So whether you’re looking for a gift to help you remember your visit to our Great Smoky Mountains or the perfect gift for that special someone in your life, Honeysuckle Rose Boutique should be on the top of your list for places to visit when enjoying the fall foliage in the Smokies. Also, please mark your calendar for our special Holiday Open House to be held on Saturday and Sunday, November 8 and 9, from 10 am to 5 pm. Join us in welcoming in our 2014 holiday season. Timeless Denim DENIM IS the most timeless wardrobe staple

that women turn to season after season. Each fall we begin our search for the ever-elusive perfect pair of jeans. Whether you’re searching for the latest new trend for fall or for classic denim styles, your search ends at elle. We offer the largest selection of designer denim in Knoxville and will help you find the perfect cut and wash to fit your body type and personality! There are so many fun denim trends this season, but we’ve narrowed down our top five favorites for fall that you can find at elle Boutique!

THE JEGGING

The jegging is simply a legging/ jean combination. We love our ultra skinny super stretch denim that fits like a legging but doesn’t lose the true denim washes that we love. These are super fitted in a way that makes you feel lean and allows you to easily tuck them into boots and wear with oversized tops, cashmere sweaters, or your favorite jackets.

CROPPED JEANS

Crop jeans can be worn all yearround. Ankle skimmers are the perfect jean to wear with the stylish booties we’re seeing everywhere this fall. The shorter inseam on crop jeans leaves just the right amount of space to show off the complete shoe but not leave you chilled!

DESTROYED DENIM

Tattered and torn, faded then mended, this fall has been focused on ripped details! Destroyed denim looks awesome styled in a laidback, casual vibe, or dress them up with silk tops, structured blazers, and your favorite heels.

NOT SO BLUE HUES

Switch up your daily denim routine by adding fun fall hues to your wardrobe. Channel your inner Parisian with a pair of black wax skinnies and a striped tee, or try the oxblood colored jean that reigns as a fall favorite paired with black booties, a white tee, and great bomber jacket.

OPEN HOUSE November 1 • 10-4 Get an early start to your holiday shopping! Check off everyone on your list in one place with home decor, clothing, accessories, and all sorts of personalized goods!

HIGH WAISTED JEANS

For those looking for an elongated looking leg or to pair with the trending crop tops and sweaters this season, the high waist jean is for you! We have several washes in our different brands available in the high waist fit and are here to help you find the one that’s best for you!

CHICAGO ROCKTH BAND WILCO CELEBRATES 20 ANNIVERSARY

O

N OCTOBER 23, the Chicago rock band Wilco returns to Knoxville for another visit to the historic Tennessee Theatre for “An Evening with Wilco” and will feature songs from every part of the band’s celebrated 20-year history. The Chicago sextet formed by singersongwriter and guitarist Jeff Tweedy in the mid-1990s. Wilco’s current lineup solidified in 2004 when guitarist Nels Cline and guitarist/keyboardist Patrick Sansone joined Tweedy, founding bassist John Stirratt, drummer Glenn Kotche, and keyboardist Mikael Jorgensen. Wilco’s brand of classic roots rock incorporates folk, pop, and genre-spanning experimentalism. Since their last visit to Knoxville in 2009, the band has released two studio albums: their self-titled album, “Wilco” (June, 2009), and their 2011 release, “The Whole Love,” which was released on their own label, dBpm. SPECIAL SPACES BED RACES

HERE DOES a child battling a

life-threatening illness go to find peace and solitude? Where does a child battling a life-threatening illness go to get away from the needles and medicines? Special Spaces is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that creates dream bedrooms for children with life-threatening illnesses. Special Spaces evolved on the belief that children facing this journey need a special space for them to heal, recover, and find peace. From princess rooms and outer space rooms to vintage travel rooms and baseball rooms, we interview the child and family to get an in-depth understanding of the child’s wishes and dreams in order to create a unique and medically functional room. A little girl may dream of a princess room while the parents are in critical need of storage space for medical supplies. We balance both those needs and 34

A Special Spaces room makeover is a very “special space” that only the child can dream or imagine that our team of contractors, electricians, and volunteers come together to create in just one day. Seventy-six percent of the children we serve are battling a form of childhood cancer. Special Spaces was founded in July 2004 in Knoxville. To date, we have created more than 400 dream bedrooms. Since the airing of the ABC show Secret Millionaire in May 2011, Special Spaces has been able to create more than 35 chapters across the country. We also just completed a room makeover in Long Island, New York, that was featured on The Today Show in September. Our volunteers for the day were Natalie Morales, Willie Geist, and Al Roker. New to the tween fashion marketplace and just introduced this fall is an exciting new boutique girls’ line called Jac & Peppar, which is only available in a few carefully selected boutiques. You’ll be excited to learn that Twig is one of those select boutiques who will be introducing you to Jac & Peppar, a sister line to Mustard Pie, one of Twig’s and your most popular brands. Jac & Peppar is a unique fusion of hippie, gypsy, and boho chic inspired by the Beatles and Rolling Stones era. It’s the kid’s version of the popular Free People and looks like the fun and hipped styles you find at Anthropologie. Created in earthy hues for free spirited girls, Jac & Peppar features design elements, including bell bottoms, tie-dyed fabrics, embroidery, and floral prints. From chiffon blouses to ribbed sweaters, Jac & Peppar offers a unique, edgy, feminine look for girls who don’t just want to blend in. UST AS I began to think that summer might be my favorite season, autumn is upon us, and I have a new favorite season. While I look forward to a full palette of fall colors and an exciting season of UT football, I think what creates the most excitement for me are the new lines of women’s apparel, hand-crafted jewelry, and accessories that we’ve discovered and that we look forward to sharing with you in the weeks ahead at Veronica G Boutique. Could Planet Beach be the beginning of a healthier and happier future for you and your loved ones? MY NAME is Ruth L. I’m 62 years old. My

daughter and I met Nina, owner of Planet Beach, at the Healthy Living Expo exhibit. That same week we visited Planet Beach. After trying the Dream Wave, I was hooked and signed up on the spot. I had never done anything without talking it over with my husband and prayed I didn’t make a mistake. In April, I started to attend every spare moment I had. I thank the Lord for such an awesome gift. You see, I suffer from fibromyalgia, severe osteoarthritis, and severe migraines. I also have panic attacks. Due to several life experiences, I was anxious and stressed. My blood pressure was higher than normal. I also have a heart condition. I was a mess and gaining weight. I weighed 150 pounds. In May, I had my physical. For the first time in years, my blood pressure was 120/70. This is without meds. I have more energy, and I’m walking two miles at a time. Did I mention I couldn’t sleep much? If I got three hours without waking, it was a good night, and that was with meds. Well, I now sleep a full seven hours straight. This is quite exciting to me. The only headaches I’m getting now are those pressure ones due to the weather. I’m eating well again, and I have the desire to do things. When I started attending the spa, my pain level was an average of 8-10. Now it’s an average of 4. I’m a totally new person. Recently I went to the doctor with my husband for his appointment. The doctor took a double take. My countenance was so different. I give the credit to my Heavenly Father, for He is my ultimate healer. I’m down to 133 pounds, and I feel the best I have in more than seven years. I’m stress-free, depression-free, and I feel like my old self again. I owe it to Planet Beach, which the Lord has gifted me with. He has chosen Planet Beach to continue the healing in me. The choice to sign up for the spa was definitely not a mistake. All it takes is a call or visit to discover if the Planet Beach experience can lead you to a healthier, happier life.

AvoidtheMold Remediation Spin MOLD IN East Tennessee presents a serious

health threat to our families in addition to the thousands of dollars in structural and ancillary damage that it can cause to homes and i t s c o nte nt s. No t understood by many, guidelines for mold remediation both at the local and at the state level are often lax, resulting in unqualified individuals who lack Jeremy & Ashley Akers both the qualifications and experience presenting themselves to homeowners as mold remediation experts. Simply put, if your mold remediation expert is not ACAC and IICRC certified, select one who is. Also, be sure to ask the expert who claims to be certified to provide their certifications. Sadly, many so-called experts claim certifications that they have not earned. So, do you have a mold problem in your home? Late summer humidity and leaky HVAC systems are a perfect recipe for mold growth. Excessive humidity here in the South plays an important role for mold growth, and HVAC system air leaks also pose a significant problem to indoor air quality. Because residential heating and cooling systems are not routinely serviced by most homeowners, most homeowners aren’t aware of sweating ducts. My own home experiences this same issue. From mid April to mid October, high humidity brings damp air into our crawlspaces. However, homeowners can be proactive and prevent these problems. Condensation forms as a result of this humid air entering a crawlspace, resulting in excessive moisture that can cause floors within your home’s living space to begin cupping and buckling as the moist air migrates from crawlspaces to living areas. Here’s another example. Moist, humid air passes into our homes through exterior outlets and other cracks and voids. This warm air allows light condensation to form on interior sheet rock and other surfaces. Think of it another way. What happens when you take an iced drink out-of-doors into the hot, humid air? Simple – condensation forms. Well, when humid air is allowed to enter our home’s air conditioned spaces, condensation forms on these cooler surfaces – the same condensation that forms the perfect conditions for mold formation. Next month we’ll discuss proactive measures homeowners can take to prevent and eliminate mold.

Blinds of Knoxville urges parents, grandparents, and caregivers to check all windows for potential cord hazards and make the necessary safety updates. Here are five simple tips you can follow to help protect children from potentially harmful cord hazards: 1. Inspect all window coverings currently in your home. Look for long cords, knots, uncontrolled loops, and other potential hazards. 2. Install only cordless window coverings in bedrooms and sleeping areas for young children. 3. Move all cribs, beds, furniture, and toys away from windows and cords. 4. Keep all window pull cords and inner lift cords out of children’s reach. Make sure that tasseled pull cords are short and continuous-loop cords are permanently anchored to the floor or wall. Cord stops must be properly installed and adjusted to limit the movement of inner lift cords. Children often view loose cords as play things and climbing aids. 5. Lock cords into position whenever horizontal blinds or shades are lowered, including when they come to rest on a window sill. Express Blinds of Knoxville offers a wide selection of cordless and motorized window coverings that eliminate cords and can help safeguard our children. All our products either meet or exceed the most recent standards of the American National Standard for Safety of Corded Window Covering Products.

If replacement is not possible, repair window blinds, corded shades, and draperies manufactured before 2001 with retrofit cord kits. For FREE retrofit cord kits or to schedule your complimentary window covering safety inspection and design consultation, call 865-730-4880 or visit www.ExpressBlindsKnox.com. Tired of Wire? Replace Inefficient Wire Shelving with a Custom Design WHETHER YOU live in a small condo or

multi-level home, a new house or an old one, many homeowners face a common problem: A wire closet system. Wire is inexpensive, but in the end, is cheaper always better? While wire shelving is certainly adequate and easy to install yourself, the non-adjustable hanging and shelving never utilizes all the storage space available. Additionally, there’s a probability of an untimely failure. “We have received calls from homeowners asking for a custom design when their wire pantry collapses in the middle of the night or they come home to find all their clothes dumped on the floor,” said Dennis Falls, a designer and co-owner of Tailored Living of Knoxville. “There can be inherent structure problems with wiring. Often the anchoring system is not sufficient to support heavy racks of clothes or pantry food.” A custom closet is not only more durable, it also: » Maximizes Storage Space – A custom design adds 30-40% more storage space than wire or do-it-yourself kits. » Fits Any Budget – A custom closet doesn’t mean expensive. A simple design will still maximize storage space. An experienced designer can help meet almost any budget. » Offers Adjustability – As your needs change shelves and rods can be adjusted, converting shelves to hanging and vice versa, with no damage to the system or sheetrock. For kids’ closets and pantries, adjustability is a must. » Provides Better Organization – There’s a place for everything, and everything has a place. When you open your closet or pantry, you’ll feel good about yourself. No more emotional stress over feeling disorganized. » Increases Home Value – Whether moving in a few years or not, professionally designed closets are high on the list of features homebuyers are looking for today. The amount of square footage a home has doesn’t matter nearly as much as how well the space inside is used. With classic white or a wood-grain finish, the difference is dramatic. Once you have a custom closet, you will never want to have wire again!

Today Consign To Design occupies nearly three times the retail space it originally occupied, and shoppers travel hours to take advantage of the incredible savings from top furniture manufacturers, including Henredon, Lane, Ethan Allen, Hickory Chair, and more. Homes & Land Magazines to “Go Pink” Nationwide HOMES & LAND magazines throughout the

nation will be going pink in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. From coast to coast, magazines participating in “Homes & Land Cares” will sport images of pink ribbons as

“The company stands united with efforts to combat breast cancer in all the communities we serve.” local magazine publishers team up with advertisers to raise money for the fight against breast cancer. Publishers are also donating advertising space for the cause, and Homes & Land’s corporate office is pitching in with cash contributions for pages wearing pink ribbons. “Most of us know someone who has been touched by this disease, and more than a few people in the nationwide Homes & Land family of franchisees and advertisers have been affected directly, coping with breast cancer personally,” said Allen Harrod, President of Homes & Land. “The company stands united with efforts to combat breast cancer in all the communities we serve.” The American Cancer Society predicts that about 300,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed this year, and more than 40,000 people will die from the disease. Breast cancer death rates have been decreasing since 1989. Those decreases are thought to be due to advances in treatment, earlier detection, and increased awareness, the society says. Breast Cancer Awareness Month keeps the disease and its prevention in the public eye while related events raise money for detection and research and to help those currently dealing with the illness.

The Holidays Are Coming

Be Prepared to Make the Best Impression

READY OR NOT, the holidays are al-

ready fast approaching. I find that many of my clients enjoy letting me assist them in creating a warm and festive atmosphere in their homes. Here are just a few suggestions to help you give your home a cozy and warm holiday glow! Start from the beginning – foyers make a great first impression. Entryways set the stage in every home. A beautiful holiday wreath can be the perfect touch to welcome family and guests. From a traditional, natural evergreen wreath to a more contemporary wreath with dried flowers mixed with metallics, a wreath will set the stage for holiday decorating. Is your entryway inviting? A welcoming, well-lit foyer is a must for every home. It’s amazing how you can easily help brighten these areas. A new mirror, entry light, and a well-selected area rug will help add a touch of warmth and excitement. Family and friends naturally settle in your living or family room. The centerpiece of the room during the holidays is typically a brightly decorated holiday tree. Sometimes furniture needs to be slightly rearranged to accommodate your family Christmas tree. This offers a great time to have a professional

designer refresh and renew your furniture before the holidays and guests arrive. Naturally, the dining room should provide an attractive and delicious atmosphere for your special holiday meals. A well-set, decorative table is a must. Decorative accent pieces or perhaps a holiday linen tablecloth can become the backdrop for a lively but not overbearing holiday centerpiece. If you have houseguests, think of ways you can make their visit with you even more special. Create that special welcoming touch using holiday-inspired accent pillows on the bed, or drape a holiday throw over a chair. Those little touches of holiday magic are what make the memories we all cherish. Above all else, when decorating for the

holidays, make sure to put your own family’s personality into everything you do. As a professional designer, I can help you relieve the stress of holiday planning while incorporating your lifestyle needs and personality into a room. Welcoming family and guests to your home should be fun. I am here to help! Why not take advantage of our exclusive, complimentary Holiday Refresh and Renew Review offer to get your home ready for the holidays? It’s also a great excuse to complete that long overdue decorating project!

Are You Fully Enjoying Your Home’s Outdoor Living Spaces? IF YOUR HOME isn’t equipped with retract-

able screens, the answer is likely no. Why? Because flying and biting insects are probably keeping you indoors. But here’s a solution. While homeowners across the country are increasingly creating popular outdoor “rooms” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially made to be weather-proof, flying and biting insects often keep homeowners from using their new outdoor spaces. Retractable screens provide the perfect answer to these problems. By combining indoor and outdoor spaces, these innovative screen solutions enhance and promote our outdoor living experience. They provide shade and allow people to extend the time that they, family, and friends spend on patios while keeping annoying, biting insects at bay. Large, motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of a building, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. The best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish the views or your home’s esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, some of the retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. These retractable screens are available in different custom colors and wood grain finishes that help merge the screens with your interior or exterior color schemes. The screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and be connected to the general building automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection is called for. For more information about retractable screen options, visit www.phantomscreens.com.

October in the Garden THIS IS THE TIME of

year when I’m grateful to live in a part of the country that has four seasons. Spring will probably always be my favorite, but fall is a close second. I love fall colors, fall clothes, and fall food. I love walking the dogs when it’s cool enough to wear a hoodie but not cold enough to wear a coat. I love going to the farm and seeing the mountain behind the house glowing with red maples. Yep, definitely a close second! October is also one of the best gardening months, so I have plenty to talk about. » Because I know you’ll be asking, our average first frost is between October 15th and 27th. This means that annuals such as impatiens and begonias need to be pulled up before then, because they turn to mush. Geraniums and petunias can usually handle a light frost just fine. Pansies can still be planted now and will last all winter and through spring. Don’t forget containers! Consider putting mums, cabbage, kale, mustard, or grasses in with pansies for

interesting colors and textures. » Fall is a great time for new beginnings. If you had work done to your house during the summer and need new landscaping, this is a great time. If you want to freshen up overgrown landscapes, this is a great time. If you’re sick to death of your ugly yard, this is a great time to create a new one! » Have you walked around your yard yet to check on things? I know some of you have, because it has been the month of baggies! Every day someone is coming in with a baggie of leaves or sticks or critters or poop. (We have gotten very skilled at identifying poop.) That is good! (The baggies, not the poop.) That means you’re checking! I would so much rather you come in with a baggie than come in and tell me you planted a shrub six months ago, and when you looked out today, it was dead. » If your yard has issues, October is generally the best month for planting (or re-planting, as the case may be) trees,

shrubs, and perennials. Our soil temperature stays warm, and we usually get rain during the winter, so the plants have several months to get their roots established before it starts getting hot. » Is your yard boring now that your deciduous plants are dropping their leaves and summer annuals are done? Add plants with fall and winter appeal! Some trees, shrubs, and perennials are at their best this time of year. Burning bush and nandina turn fiery red, beautyberry and winterberry hollies put on clusters of berries, and fall annuals and perennials are showing off their blooms. » Having children messes up your brain. Even though my children are college age and beyond, I’m doomed to never hearing the word “cleanup” without having Barney the dinosaur singing in my head. My head is a crowded place sometimes. Anyway, you need to do a good cleanup of your yard. Cleanup includes the dreaded fallen leaf piles. If you don’t have many trees, this is easy: they can be shredded and used as mulch or compost. If you have a yard full like I do, it’s a big deal. If we didn’t rake, we would have leaves two feet deep. When that happens, you have to get them up, or they will kill everything under them. » Since I mentioned compost, this is a terrific time to add it to your flower beds. If you spread it now, it has all winter to break down and add nutrients to your soil. When spring gets here, all those nutrients will be ready to make your plants grow. » Let’s talk about water. I will point out that last October we got no rain. None. Don’t put your hose up yet. » Don’t prune. » Do mulch. Mulch will help preserve moisture and stabilize ground temperatures during the winter. Don’t bury your plants! Three inches is enough. » Pull any weeds and apply a pre-emergent to keep them from popping back up during the winter. » Fill up your birdfeeders with good birdseed. Don’t use the crappy kind or you won’t have pretty birds, and you will have ugly weeds. Don’t forget the birdbaths, either! Keep them full and clean. Glass and ceramic baths should be brought in before a freeze, but metal and plastic baths can stay out all year. We have several terrific workshops and events coming up, so stop by and see what’s new!

UT GARDENS PLANT OF THE MONTH:

SUNFLOWER

SUNFLOWER: THE very name brings

a smile to most people’s faces. Sunflowers are one of the few flowers, along with perhaps tulips and roses, that even the most inexperienced gardener or city-slicker can recognize. Who can but help enjoy these big, bold, and beautiful paragons of summer? As the summer wanes, many varieties are still putting on a show. Although the large, yellow varieties like ‘Mammoth’ are perhaps the most familiar, sunflowers actually come in a variety of colors, sizes, and forms that can be appropriate for any garden. ‘Chianti’ has a wine-red flower, ‘Velvet Queen’ has a blending of orange, yellow, and red all on the same bloom, and ‘Shock-o-Lat’ has a rich redbrown center with a gold outer margin. Sunflowers vary in size from dwarf, about three feet tall, to giant, which can get up to nine feet tall. Many of the dwarf varieties like ‘Elegance’ exhibit heavy branching, resulting in many blooms on one plant. These are ideal for cutting for indoor enjoyment. Double-f lowering and pom-pom cultivars are also available, adding to the range of choices. ‘Teddy Bear’ is a favorite, with a pin cushion type flower head in a yellow-orange color. Sunflowers (Helianthus annuus), as the scientific name implies, are annual plants that are best grown from seed. Rarely would you find sunflowers in pots or flats for the garden, as they do not transplant well. Once the soil has warmed, sow directly into well-drained soil in a sunny location. Sunf lowers generally take about 45-60 days to f lower and can bloom up to five weeks. To extend bloom time, especially with single-blooming varieties, succession sowing is a great option. This is done by staggering sowing times by about two weeks. Sow your first crop, wait two weeks, then sow another, wait two more weeks, and, if desired, sow a third. Be sure to space the plants out at a suitable distance from each other so the younger seedling are not shaded by the more mature plants. Sunflowers are great for attracting pollinators to your garden. Bees and butterflies love the extraordinary amount of pollen produced. Be aware that some cultivars, especially those bred for cut flowers, don’t produce pollen. These are generally labeled.

This mixture of ‘Dwarf Teddy Bear’ and ‘Dwarf Sunspot’ sunflowers put on a cheerful show at the UT Gardens, Knoxville.

Critters of all kinds, including birds, squirrels, and even humans, love sunflower seeds. Rich in essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals, they are an ideal attractant of wildlife. Goldfinches especially are drawn to this abundant food source and give a sunflower patch an added dimension of movement and color. When they are feeding, it is a wonderful sight to behold. For human consumption, the tastiest seed tends to be large black and white striped seed. Good selections for “confectionary” or edible seed are ‘Russian Mammoth, ‘Paul Bunyun’, and ‘Miriam’. Whether you plant a few or a field, nothing beats the beauty of sunflowers. They will definitely put a smile on your face. James Newburn is the Assistant Director of the UT Gardens in Knoxville. The Gardens include plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit www.utgardens.tennessee.edu.

Stomp Out Dirt, Inside and Out

HAVE YOU ever had your floors cleaned

only to be disappointed that traffic patterns returned after only a few weeks? If so, you aren’t alone. There is a very simple reason why your floors inside your home don’t concede to your best cleaning efforts. When we started this business six years ago, the vast majority of our jobs were inside homes and businesses. As we began to branch out the following year cleaning and sealing driveways, walkways, and brick pavers, something unexpected began to take shape. The homes which we were able to clean inside AND out stopped the cycle of soil in its tracks. (No pun intended.) These homes stayed clean much longer than the homes in which we cleaned the inside only. Since we had eliminated all soil, dirt, and debris from every walkable surface outside the home, traffic patterns inside were not re-formed after the initial cleaning, because

new dirt was never brought back through the front door. Once the outside of the home was cleaned, the inside stayed clean. If you are a homeowner that wants to stomp out dirt and grime, you must begin where the dirt originates, and it starts outside. Once outside surfaces are deep cleaned and all foreign material removed, they can be sealed for easy surface cleaning with a garden hose. After a cleaning, every surface will sparkle and be thoroughly sanitized. You will be amazed at how much easier it will be for you to keep it clean. Our patented equipment is fully customizable to the job. Not only can we tackle the messiest industrial jobs, but we are able to finely adjust our equipment to protect all indoor surfaces as well. How Is It Going to Work with the Dogs? FOR SOME homeowners, their most impor-

tant family members are of the four-legged variety. Due in part to the trend of Americans delaying getting married and having children until later in life, pet ownership has reached an all-time high. In the U.S., 68% of households, or 82.5 million, included at least one pet in 2012, according to the American Pet Products Association, up from 62%, or 72.9 million, in 2010. Spending has also reached new highs as well. In 2012, we spent $53.3 billion on our pets, up from $41.2 billion just five years earlier. As a result, architects, builders, and interior designers say there is increasing demand for pet-centric spaces that feature everything from “dog spas” and grooming centers to lounge areas and rooms with pet-size furniture. Some designconscious pet owners are integrating their pet paraphernalia in an aesthetically pleasing way, replacing carpeted scratching posts and chainlink dog kennels with built-ins and cabinetry designed to blend in with the rest of the home. Builder Jenny Blalock is currently working on a design for a client that owns three small dogs and also fosters for small breeds. She is customizing the dog room to have four separate areas for the dogs to sleep in without putting them into crates. The room will also hold the dogs’ food, leashes, and other doggy items in cabinets and offer a bathing area for them. It will also be located in the back of the house, so she can easily let them outside. Living with dogs and cats has its challenges. Pets can be tough on fabrics and floors. Hearty dog-friendly flooring like concrete can be slippery, so applying an epoxy finish is often necessary. Also, choosing a very durable hardwood floor is a must. The homeowner says she knew she didn’t want crates cluttering her new house, so designing a specific room for her dogs creates much more space in her home. “I am planning to install a dutch door that leads into the dog room, so it can remain shut yet opened at the top so she can keep an eye out on

them,” said Jenny. It’s important for dog lovers to keep their dogs’ needs and comfort in mind. In the kitchen, incorporate a cabinet that offers a dog feeding area, including a sink with filtered water to fill bowls. There are so many other things that can be customized around your pets and also create less accumulated clutter so common when owning a pet. To discover how Luxe Homes & Design can incorporate unique designs around

your lifestyle into your new home, or to learn more about the Luxe Homes experience, you’re invited to call Jenny today.

Oriental Rugs: They Should Come With a Warning

WHY DO Oriental rugs, which are known for

their longevity and durability, require special handling when cleaning? These hand-crafted pieces of art continue to be manufactured by hand in much of the same way they have been created for more than a century. When properly cared for, these heirlooms, which are crafted using durable, all-natural fibers including wool and cotton, will generally appreciate in value over time and can be shared with future generations to enjoy. But these same Oriental rugs also have a variety of other natural and organic materials, dyes for instance, that make these durable and long lasting treasures potentially prone to permanent and usually irreversible damage. Searching for ways to clean their rugs, Oriental rug owners often turn to the Internet for advice. While some suggestions are indeed valid, others can lead to disastrous results. Some rug owners have been encouraged to use the same cleaning process used to clean their wall-to-wall carpeting. Others have been encouraged to wash their rugs on the

Mold Is An Allergy & Asthma Trigger! DO YOU HAVE a dirt basement or crawl

space? These are ideal locations for moisture that can cause mold to grow, releasing airborne mold spores and dust mites that can migrate into your living space as indoor air pollutants and allergens that trigger allergy and asthma symptoms. Signs of a mold allergy include coughing, wheezing, a runny nose, irritated eyes, or a scratchy throat. Sometimes it’s hard to get a mold allergy correctly diagnosed, for people don’t realize that a moisture or mold problem at home is contributing to their symptoms. Prolonged exposure to mold can also cause serious respiratory problems with symptoms like chest tightness, difficulty breathing, and even lung hypersensitivity, which can lead to scar tissue in the lungs. Aside from health issues, moisture problems can cause wood to rot, making it a desirable target for termites and structural damage that is very expensive to repair! Dayton’s uses the CleanSpace® Crawl Space Encapsulation System (with 25-year warranty if using all recommended components) that transforms a nasty, damp crawl space or dirt basement into a clean, dry space that’s an asset rather than a liability. This system is recognized industry-wide for excellent performance in moisture control, and Dayton’s will do a free inspection of your crawl space or dirt basement to assess any moisture problems. New customers will receive $250 OFF a CleanSpace® Crawl Space Encapsulation System, plus Dayton’s will beat any competitor’s price by $100 with equal components. For more information or a free inspection, call 865-588-6686 or visit www.daytonspestcontrol.com.

Enchanted October at Ijams

“A drowsy, dreamy influence seems to hang over the land, and to pervade the very atmosphere,”

wrote Washington Irving in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Irving was from New York, but perhaps he was thinking of enchanted Ijams. THERE’S A change in the air. You can feel

it: the crispness, the cool mornings, the first light frost. There’s also a change in palette. The greens of spring change to red, orange, yellow, and gold. The first day of fall may be in September, but the enchantment of autumn happens in October. The inventive education staff at Ijams has several special events and programs planned for the young and young at heart in October. Bewitched: The spiders, owls, and frogs talk and tell their stories in the Enchanted Forest planned for Saturday, October 11. Ijams hears that even the forest pirate Red Squirrelly will make a quarrelsome return. Fall Fairy House Festival is set for Saturday, October 18. Young gnomes and fairies will get to build their very own enchanted house out of sticks, leaves, and other magical natural items. Late in the month, for those that love to be spooked, Sabrina DeVault is planning three Haunted Lantern Tours that explore the darker side of the park at night on October 23, 28, and 29. Speaking of the spooky, darker side, mark your calendar for this year’s Zombie Movie Marathon set for Saturday evening, October 11. River Sports Outfitters will be at Mead’s Quarry Lake throughout October weekends

renting bikes, canoes, kayaks, and the very popular paddleboards. The rentals are $11 per hour for boats, and mountain and greenway bikes are available for $35 for a full day. Canoes hold two people, and the kayaks and paddleboards are solo adventures. The good folks from River Sports also plan two overnight family campouts at the Visitor Center on two Saturdays, October 4 and 18. Additional Ijams Public Programs: I will be hosting another “Birding and Breakfast” chat on Saturday, October 4. In addition, green thumb Peg Beute will be hosting a gardening workshop and select Saturday mornings preparing breakfast for visitors, while Dr. Louise Conrad, the Ijams veterinarian, will lead another Walk n’ Wag doggie outing on Saturday, October 25. Creature Feature animal programs are also regular happenings on Saturdays. For information about any of these programs, including dates, start times, fees, and registration, call 865-577-4717, ext. 110, or visit www.ijams.org/events. Nature almanac In addition to the changing of the leaves,

fall wildflowers add their color to the park. Look for purple ironweed and the bright saffron of goldenrod. With the birds, fall bird migration is still in progress, plus winter species like white-throated sparrows and hermit thrushes will begin to make their appearances at Ijams. As always, Ijams welcomes you in all seasons, 12 months of the year. Stephen Lyn Bales is senior naturalist at Ijams and the author of Natural Histories and Ghost Birds, published by UT Press and available in the Ijams gift shop. October 2014 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

know and understand the importance of creating a certain image with your company. You get one shot at making a first impression, and this will determine if clients will come back to do business with you or not. During the last 15 years, my company has mainly been focusing on the interiors of private residences; however, in the last few years, we’ve also been helping other businesses with their interior design and their look. I’m a firm believer that the interior of someone’s business ( just like our homes) is a direct reflection of their work, passion for their profession, and customer service, and without a doubt, a friendly, chic, and updated atmosphere helps increase someone’s business and traffic. Our job at Wolfgang Interiors & Gifts is to help transform workplaces into an environment that reflects their services and to make a statement for their business. One such case is Tennessee Lasik Associates, whose offices we first transformed about 13 years ago and who just recently asked us to redo their waiting and reception area, as well as to accessorize the walls. Our goal was to create enough seating in the waiting area, for which

we chose caramel leather and commercial grade velvet fabric. We also softened the look with a beautiful window treatment and various pieces of artwork for texture and color. For a couple of wall areas, we decided on an arrangement of mercury glass balls in silver and brown and for gold leaved half shells, which are screwed directly into the wall. The company logo in the reception area is being highlighted by indirect lighting and textured wallpaper, which introduces the color scheme and sets the mood. If you’re a business owner and have been thinking about changing the look of your company or offices, give us a call to find out how we can help you with your own project.

Keep Growing with Season-Extending

Gardening Tips for Fall WARM WEATHER, continued care, and

robust plants have yielded a bounty of beautiful, fresh vegetables – and personal satisfaction – from your garden this season. As the weather cools and fall approaches, it is not time to hang up your hat, gloves, and trowel for the year. Autumn provides optimum weather and ample opportunity to keep growing and harvesting delicious, healthy produce well into the season. Some gardeners assume that when fall arrives and kids return to school, they’ll have less time to garden and may experience less success from their garden plots. But cooler temperatures and fall conditions can actually make gardening easier and more enjoyable. Many of fall’s best-producing vegetables are also colorful, making them great additions to flower beds and containers. If you loved summer gardening, you can keep your garden growing right through fall. Here’s how to make the most of fall season gardening:

SIZE UP THE SOIL

you plant from seed. S ome produc er s prov ide ga rden retailers with transplants intended to grow well during the specific growing season. Seasonally appropriate transplants ensure you’ll have greater success in your garden. An added bonus of fall planting is that many cool crops a re a lso packed with nutrition and are among the healthiest vegetables you can eat. Choose hardy crops that can withstand light frost and temperatures as low as 25 degrees. Some favorites for fall include: » Broccoli – This versatile veggie is packed with vitamins K, C, and A and is a good source of folate. » Cabbage – A staple of Oktoberfest celebrations across the country, cabbage comes in several varieties, all of which are high in beta-carotene, vitamins C and K, and fiber.

» Kale – Some varieties of kale, like Winterbor Kale, actually taste better when kissed by frost. A prolific producer, kale thrives in fall gardens and is a good source of vitamins A, C, K, and B6, as well as manganese. » Leeks – Prized by gourmets for their milder flavor, leeks are frost-tolerant in all but the coldest planting zones. The health benefits of all onions are well documented, and leeks also add a pop of bright color to culinary dishes. » Spinach – This nutrient-rich green does as well in fall’s cooler temperatures as it does in summer heat. Spinach will continue to produce throughout the season, providing a tasty source of vitamins A, C, K, and E, as well as the minerals iron, potassium, and magnesium. The end of summer doesn’t have to herald the end of your garden harvest and enjoyment or a return to the grocery store produce aisle. With the right fall crops, you can achieve a satisfying, healthful harvest throughout the fall.

Most vegetable plants require full sun for six or more hours a day, and because fall provides a bit less sunlight than summer, you may need to relocate your plot to make the most of shorter days. If moving your garden isn’t an option, you can still take full advantage of sunshine by planting veggies in containers or by creating a raised bed in a sunny spot. If you’ll be reusing your summer garden plot, remove any leftover debris. Don’t forget to pull up weeds before they go to seed. Fluff any compacted soil with a garden fork. Next, test the soil to see if any amendments are needed. Even if your soil is in good shape, adding a two-inch layer of bagged compost or a balanced, natural fertilizer can give plants a boost. Be prepared for frost. Keep materials on hand to protect plants when frost threatens, such as floating row cover, a cold frame, or a cloche. On frosty, cold nights, move container plants to a protected spot.

PICK YOUR PLANTS

While crops like strawberries and tomatoes have faded to sweet summer memories, many plants thrive in fall. To ensure a successful harvest, it’s important to pick the right plants and give yourself a jump start by using transplants, rather than starting off with seeds. Planting six-week-old transplants ensures you’ll have the best opportunity to take advantage of fall’s shorter season, and you’ll harvest sooner than if October 2014 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

The Great Debate:

Stacking TVs and Fireplaces

WHEN CHOOSING a focal point for a

room, designers and homeowners alike often plan for a single feature – windows, TVs, artwork, or fireplaces – to take center stage. However, the explosion of flat screen TVs for every room in the home has created a debate. Can you really have more than one focal point? Online resources like Houzz and various design blogs have made it easy for homeowners to discuss that question, with many in favor of combining two features that typically stand out on their own – fireplaces and TVs – on one wall to blend the warm and comforting aesthetics of a fireplace with easy TV access. The question is if a TV can – and should – be mounted on the wall above a fireplace, combining the two elements into one focal point, since they’re traditionally used individually. The good news is that the TV and fireplace can occupy the same wall with a few minor install tweaks. It can work from both a technical and a design standpoint.

In large rooms with adequate space, TVs above the fireplace can create an ideal angle of vision. In fact, stacking TVs and fireplaces can be a great choice.

In large rooms with adequate space, TVs above the fireplace can create an ideal angle of vision. In fact, stacking TVs and fireplaces can be a great choice for several reasons: » Easy design: Combining two elements in one location makes it easier to design the rest of the room, allowing for a single grouping of chairs and couches. In some room designs, it also leaves room for other areas to be turned into reading corners or small work spaces. » Enhanced functionality: Open-con-

cept floor plans and homes that have the kitchen, eating, and living area combined into an open great room are perfect for placing the TV and fireplace on the same wall. This arrangement provides optimal viewing of the TV while cooking in the kitchen or relaxing in the eating area, while also incorporating the warmth and comfort of the fireplace. » Subtle style: Higher placement makes a TV less obvious when a person first walks into the room. Visitors notice a beautiful fireplace, especially when lit, and may only observe the TV if it’s turned on. Plus there are other decorating tricks designers can use if a homeowner really doesn’t want the TV to stand out, like hiding it behind a painting or mirror. The TV can be revealed with a push of a remote control button, causing the painting or mirror to slide over or up, and then hidden again with another push of a button when the TV is turned off. For a quick living room update, consider placing your TV above the fireplace to create a warm, welcoming, and inviting space. You may also consider adding a fireplace to your existing TV room for added relaxation and ambiance.

When I was young, I reserved “experiences” for summer vacations and thought about the purchase of things or services just as a means to an end with no real memory made or even expected. Now I tend to view absolutely everything as an experience, even typically mundane things like buying groceries or choosing a route for the drive home. For me, and maybe it is part of growing older, every second counts. Time just goes by too fast. I have discovered that thinking about everything as an experience worthy of more than just getting through the day creates richer, more memorable moments. A couple of years ago I spent the New Year’s holiday at Colonial Williamsburg. It was a nice immersion into another time and place that exceeded my expectations. One evening we were guided to different locations as part of a “journey through time.” Each place we visited featured a short period play designed to make guests feel as though we had been transported to a different era and were “just dropping in” to see what was going on at a particular moment. By the end of the evening, we had visited Colonial Williamsburg from the earliest days of the settlement to the modern era. Everything about Williamsburg was what I expected as far as the buildings and costumed characters go, but it was that one evening’s journey through time that really exceeded my expectations. It taught me new things about the history of the place while allowing me to have fun doing it. It was an experience I will not forget. There are many professionals from a variety of backgrounds stating that we are moving into an “experience economy.” What that means is our society is evolving from 62

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE October 2014

the current service economy just as we had previously evolved from manufacturing and agriculture based economies. Joseph Pine and James Gilmore introduced this concept in their book “The Experience Economy.” According to Pine and Gilmore, “recognizing experiences as a distinct economic offering provides the key to future economic growth.” That can mean different approaches depending on the industry, but as the public moves from just buying goods and services to seeking memorable experiences, historic preservation can certainly play a very important role. Experiences are most fulfilling when they are authentic, unique, engaging, and tell stories that transcend time and place. Historic buildings, neighborhoods, and landscapes are perfectly suited to do that simply because of their existing distinctive characteristics and the passage of time that connects them to distant people and events. People are hungry for new experiences, and our historic sites, neighborhoods, and downtowns should be optimized to offer that. Historic sites can continually work to enhance the visitor experience. Communities can market their historic assets in new and creative ways. This is why the theme for the 6th annual East Tennessee Preservation Conference is “Preservation and the Experience Economy.” We invite you to join us in Oak Ridge on November 6, 7, and 8 to learn more about how heritage tourism, downtown revitalization, and historic preservation work to create culturally rich environments that contribute to our local economies and quality of life. Speakers will include Franklin Vagnone, Executive Director of the Historic House Trust in New York, who has become well-known for his innovative approaches to historic walking tours, connecting historic

sites to more diverse audiences and making house museums accessible and interactive. Commissioner Susan Whitaker with the Tennessee Department of Tourism will be discussing the importance of heritage tourism on our state’s economy. Other sessions will explore African-American tourism, adaptive re-use of historic sites, and how historic buildings can be used to create exceptional places for dining, shopping, living, and event spaces. Best of all, the conference will be a time to tell the special story of Oak Ridge through insider perspectives at a variety of venues. As America moves toward a growing “experience-based economy,” historic preservation efforts can be taken to new levels of understanding and effectiveness. Preservation enthusiasts have understood this for a long time, but now the secret is out… preservation secures our heritage while making real dollars and sense. Join us in Oak Ridge this November, and learn how to capitalize on the new experience economy. For more information, call 865-685-5958 or visit www. knoxheritage.org. We look forward to seeing you in Oak Ridge!

DAVE MASON: A MUSICAL ICON I F ONE were to make a list of

attributes of a rock and roll icon, Dave Mason would be able to check every box on that list. From hit making songwriter/guitarist, to playing with some of the biggest names in rock ‘n’ roll, to being an inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Dave Mason is all of that and more. An energetic, dynamic 68 year old rocker, the co-founder of the legendary group, Traffic, still records fantastic, relevant music and still tours the country every year. In fact, East Tennessee will be very interested in two things about Mr. Mason. One being that earlier this year, Dave released “Future’s Past” - his 13th solo studio album (in addition to his six live solo albums) that presents updated versions of some of his tunes from his Traffic days, as well as from his previous solo albums (plus a new song or two). The

64

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE October 2014

second item that will be of keen interest to East Tennesseans is that Dave will be performing in three cities in the region. I recently contacted Dave at his California home to discuss the new album and his upcoming shows in the region. Our conversation started out with discussing “Future’s Past.” “I have a studio at home,” said Dave. “Making a CD or album like we used to, it’s something that I’ve kind of thrown out the window at this point. But that being said, music is my life, so when I’m home, I’m always working on something in my studio. It may be a revised version of an older song. I have versions of songs that I loved when I was growing up. There’s Eddie Cochran that I’ve done that hasn’t been released, and I have new stuff that I’ve worked on. “To say that I was consciously putting an album together – I wasn’t. But what I do have, as I said, is a collection of music that I constantly keep making. A lot of it is never in one style, which has presented a problem in the sense that it’s hard to pigeon hole me musically. Am I rock? Am I ballads? Am I blues? I’m not any one of those. I just want to cover the gambit of songwriting. “So I have a collection of stuff, and I had some things sitting there and some stuff that I revisited. For example, I did a re-write of that version of ‘Dear Mr. Fantasy’, and, yes, I was going out to do ‘Traffic Jam’, so it seemed appropriate to put a couple of things on that CD from that era. “Then I had some things like ‘Sad and Deep as You,’ which I put on there, that was from ‘Alone Together’ – my first solo album. It was such a strong and powerful version that I felt that it should go on there. So essentially I had a mix of stuff that was new and old and, hence, the title eventually becoming ‘Future’s Past’.” Regarding the beautiful album cover, Dave shared, “I was lucky enough to have a friend send me some stuff from Graham Nash’s art show, and one of the things that he had was the cover, which is done by Graham. It’s a photograph of me in the

‘70s when I was at his house in Kauai, and he did artwork on it. So the cover is done by Graham, and it sort of seemed to fit perfectly with the title.” Further into our conversation, we talked about Mason’s upcoming shows in East Tennessee. “I’m looking forward to playing down there in Tennessee and some other states,” said Dave. “I haven’t played these places in years! I’ve played Atlanta but not a lot of other places like Chattanooga. I mean, it’s been years and years since I’ve played those places. I’m very much looking forward to playing there and hoping people will remember to come out. The band is great. The show is great. I’m as good at being Dave Mason as I’m going to be. Ha! Ha!” Spea king about the show itself, Dave indicated, “Basically, the Traffic Jam show runs about two hours, and we do it in two sections. The first half of it is pretty much the songs from the Traffic days when I was with them. Then we take a 15 minute break, and then we come back and do stuff from my solo career.” For a great opportunity to relive musical memories and enjoy a great night with a musical icon, order tickets at one of the three East Tennessee venues. Dave is performing at Hiwassee College in Madisonville on November 3, Chattanooga at the UTC Fine Arts Center on November 5, and the Bijou in Knoxville on November 9.

Catch a Glimpse of Fall Colors on These Awesome Off-Road Trails TR AVEL AMERICA :

T

HE FALL months are a

great time for families to enjoy the great outdoors with the changing of colors and much cooler temperatures. If you don’t already have a fall escape weekend planned, you might want to consider scheduling one soon. Interest in outdoor adventures is on the rise, especially for women, with more than 80% of women surveyed considering themselves adventurous. There’s no better way to experience the vibrancy of fall but to immerse yourself and the family in the brilliance, and an off-road vehicle provides a front-seat view. If you’re interested in seeing some of the best colors America has to offer, check out these off-road trails designed to showcase vibrant reds, shimmering golds, and deep purples that will have you catching your breath in awe of the beauty.

COPPER HARBOR, MICHIGAN

This small town was given the best of Mother Nature’s talents overlooking Lake Superior. The drive to the tip of the Upper Peninsula is long, but Cooper Harbor provides an extensive system of off-road trails running along the lake’s shoreline. Keep in mind, fall colors change earlier in the UP along the shore, so consider planning your fall trip for around the first weekend in October.

ROCK RUN RECREATION AREA, PATTON, PENNSYLVANIA

The Allegheny Mountains combine a beautiful combination of oak, cherry, yellow poplar, ash, and maple trees for a colorful fall blend that starts around the last week of September and peaks around the second week of October. Rock Run has 140 miles of trails to keep your family entertained for a long weekend, and you can easily find a camping spot in the three campgrounds spread around the recreation area.

PAIUTE TRAIL, SOUTH CENTRAL UTAH

As the largest trail system in the nation, this is an opportunity your family can’t pass up, especially if you want to see some gorgeous fall colors. Many of the trails weave their way through Fishlake National Forest, which has a blend of deep green coniferous trees mixed in with the colorful orange and gold hues of aspens. The trail system is so extensive; your family will always be looking around the next corner from your off-road vehicle to capture a glimpse of new canyon, lake, scenic overlook, or quiet valley.

HATFIELD-MCCOY TRAILS, WEST VIRGINIA

With 700 trails ranging from easy to the most difficult, your family will have plenty of opportunity to enjoy the off-road riding, the scenery of the mountains in Southern West Virginia, and spend some quality time together. There is no camping allowed on the trail system, but there are plenty of bed and breakfasts, cabins, and

campgrounds, as well as hotels and rental homes scattered throughout the six counties the trails cross. The second and third week in October tend to offer peak fall colors, so book your lodging now for your family excursion.

CLARK AND JACKSON COUNTIES, WISCONSIN

With 227 miles of ATV and UTV trails available in these two counties, your family will have no difficulty filling a long fall weekend with fun and sightseeing. Clark and Jackson counties are known for their beautiful rolling hills, wandering streams, and plentiful wildlife. Oaks, maples, birch, and pine trees are common, providing a beautiful backdrop of color along the trails. These are just a few of the many off-road trail options scattered across the country. Start planning a fun, mini fall vacation for your family to experience the colors in a whole new way, from the seat of an off-road vehicle and ensuring a fall colors experience like no other.

Ames Plantation’s Heritage Festival Provides Fun for the Family IF YOU’RE looking for a family outing

that’s unique, educational, and also fun, mark your calendars for Saturday, October 11. That’s the day of the 17th annual Heritage Festival held on the grounds of the Ames Plantation in Grand Junction, Tennessee. This all-day event takes visitors back to a time of horse-drawn plows, spinning wheels, and old-fashioned bluegrass pickers playing on the porch. With more than 150 friendly folk artists demonstrating traditional farming and home life skills, plus a long lineup of award-winning gospel and bluegrass bands, visitors can truly get a glimpse of 19th century life in the South. Visitors can also shop for unique, handmade crafts, listen to old-timey gospel and bluegrass music, and tour a reproduction of a Civil War camp. Children will love to inspect antique tractors, pick their own cotton, and stretch their imaginations with a 19th century arts and crafts activity. New to the festival will be the addition of a miniature replica of The Alamo, the site for

a pivotal battle in the quest for Texas independence. Historians will regale visitors with tales of Tennessee’s involvement with this significant landmark. You can also check out the nationally renowned Stencil House. Built in the 1830s, its name stems from the elaborate stencil

designs covering the home’s walls, a popular decoration for 19 th century families. The stenciling represents one of the most impressive surviving examples of this form of folk art in the region today, and it is believed to be one of the oldest surviving displays of stenciling in the South. Whether you’re sitting in a one-room schoolhouse while an animated speaker spins tall tales or you are tapping your toe to an up-tempo bluegrass tune, at the Heritage Festival you can unwind and enjoy good family fun. Plus, it’s all just an hour’s drive from Memphis, Jackson, or Corinth. The Heritage Festival runs from 9 am to 5 pm. Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for children ages 4–16, and free for ages 3 and under. Parking is free. Enter Ames Plantation at Buford Ellington Road off Tennessee Highway 18. No pets, please. IT’S NOT all that unusual for musicians

to talk the talk about taking a less-is-more approach to their work, but it’s rare indeed for artists to really walk the walk and apply that philosophy across the board. During the better part of a decade, Shovels & Rope have done just that, cutting unnecessary frills from their songs, not to mention the very way they live their musical lives. Mississippi-born, Nashville-bred Cary Ann Hearst and Texas-born, Colorado-raised Michael Trent forged singular paths as solo artists before connecting – both musically and personally – in Charleston, South Carolina. While they’d both had burgeoning solo careers (Cary Ann earned kudos for her 2006 album Dust and Bones, Michael with his band, The Films, as well as his own solo outings), they quickly found that both their voices – which entwine with eerie beauty in their haunting harmonies – and philosophies matched up perfectly, and a beautiful partnership was born.

“Consciously or not, we’ve always insulated ourselves from outside influences,” said Cary

Ann. “The key, for us, is to be authentic to ourselves, and, sometimes to a fault, we’ve managed to do that. I don’t think we’d be able to keep doing this if we backed off from what we were doing when we started.” For more information, visit www.knoxbijou.com.

How Paintless Dent Repair Works

THERE’S NO QUESTION about it. With

few exceptions, we love our cars, and because of the high price of cars today and our desire to drive them longer, proper maintenance is essential. But what about your automobile’s exterior and those dents and dings that have accumulated throughout the years from car doors and shopping carts? They detract from your car’s overall appearance and lower its value at trade-in time. So what’s the solution? You can take your car to a conventional body shop, where the dents and dings are filled with a bonding agent, sanded, painted, and a clear coat of paint applied, or you could visit one of the numerous paintless dent repair places you frequently see opening and then closing months later. Another option would be for you to visit Advantage Paintless Dent Removal. So what’s the difference? Advantage owner, Brandon Wood, has combined more than a decade of automotive restoration experience with state-ofthe-art paintless dent removal technology to offer you the high level of service and peace of mind you deserve when removing those annoying dents, dings, and hail damage from your vehicle’s exterior – and all backed up with their 100% satisfaction guarantee and lifetime warranty. You’ll also appreciate their professional approach to their customers. “We have a very low key approach to our business,” said Brandon. “There’s absolutely no sales gimmicks or pressure to make a decision. The work we perform is our craft, and you’ll discover our uncommon passion for every repair we perform. Our work and high level of customer satisfaction speak for themselves.” Advantage also offers a variety of other services that benefit both car and truck owners. “We offer paint correction and polishing to remove scratches and swirls so your car has the showroom shine,” said Brandon. “We also offer spray-on truck bed liners to help protect its finish.” If you’d like to give your vehicle that new showroom look, call Advantage Paintless Dent Removal today for a free estimate. Small dents can be removed in about one hour for just a fraction of the cost the conventional body shops charge.

“I LOVED my quaint little boutique, which

was located in the historic district of downtown Loudon,” said Gail Edwards, owner of Veronica G Boutique. Launched in 2010 as Chic Boutique, Gail’s new venture transitioned from upscale consignment, to a fusion of new retail and consignment, to full retail. “These changes occurred during three years, largely in response to a rapidly changing marketplace,” said Gail. Perhaps the most significant change made, however, was the decision to relocate to Turkey Creek. “We developed a large Knoxville clientele, and with rising fuel costs, there was a greater reluctance for many to make the 40 to 50 mile roundtrip drive,” said Gail. “A large retail space would also allow us to significantly expand the designer lines we offer.” Now opened since February 2014 in her much larger and redesigned space,

WHY WOULD a busy wife, mother of

Who You Are When You Wished Nobody Was Watching WE WERE VISITING with a neighbor

recently and, not surprisingly, our conversation drifted to a variety of topics. One in particular stood out. Our neighbor was sharing an experience she had previously with a local health care provider. She described the opportunity she had to discuss her small business with this physician who had inquired about the products and services she offered. Much to her surprise, this doctor treated her in a very unprofessional manner that she regarded as outright rude. Some time later this same health care provider was recommended to her and her husband, and predictably, they went elsewhere. Further, they have shared this same story countless times with many others. Another local business owner just recently told of an area husband and wife team who own a local restaurant that has earned a

reputation for service and quality but who have also earned a reputation as overly aggressive negotiators when dealing with other area business owners. What’s most interesting is that this couple, who demands the lowest possible prices from others, does not discount their restaurant’s menu prices. The stories of their behavior are repeatedly shared with others in the community, all at the expense of this couple’s business. It’s difficult to understand how small business owners can exhibit such contrasting personalities; one when they ’re with customers and an altogether different one when they think no one is watching. But one thing is very clear – people talk, negative stories take on a life of their own, and these same business owners later suffer financially from their self-inflicted wounds. I can share dozens of stories of individuals

who avoid certain small businesses like the plague. Sadly, these same stories are shared far more often than the positive stories. Is there a lesson here? Not if you don’t care how people view you or your business. But if you do care, remember that how you conduct yourself outside of your brick and mortar establishment has consequences. If you sell at list price but demand deep discounts from your vendors, who might also be your customers, be prepared to see them and the people they network with less often or perhaps not at all. If you have earned a reputation for rudeness outside your office, be prepared to experience a high customer turnover rate. And just when you thought nobody was watching!

Epic Encouragement IT WAS April 11, 1999. I was to offer a chil-

dren’s sermon before a large congregation of United Methodists. Nervous? Yes. But when asked, I’d accepted. Weeks ahead I planned and prepared. My goal was to offer a sermonette that would be exciting for the dozens of children but also relevant for adults. While I vaguely remember the topic, what I remember most was a note I received from a high school student leader shortly after I’d finished. Using red construction paper and bright markers, he handed me a letter of encouragement. “Thank you for your time today.” He shook my hand and smiled. In his letter, he spoke blessings over my life, talents, and potential. Wow. From a youth. At that point in my life, I felt my greatest potential was to deliver both children to preschool on time, well fed and properly clothed. Yet those words took root in my hungry soul. Though discolored around the edges and a bit worn, that colorful letter is prominently displayed on my desk – 15 years later! It’s a powerful reminder that encouragement is epic. Several other meaningful cards and letters are in a sacred file kept near my cluttered

desk. Some are displayed on a bulletin board. Many times throughout the years I’ve consulted that file. Each time I’ve been uplifted. In today’s technology saturated world, we become easily distracted by constant streams of unimportant messages and less engaged in the here and now, sadly unaware of the opportunities to simply encourage others. It takes very little time yet reaps great reward for both parties. Try a few time tested strategies: » Write hand-written letters. Buy stationary and boxed cards. Keep them visible where you are easily reminded. Take time to compliment others. Perhaps accelerate a vision for someone who is feeling doubtful. Put them in the mail. They are sure to be pleasantly surprised when they receive it. » Make at least one call a week to a friend or family member to encourage them in some

specific way. A job, a skill, or a great meal, or stir a dream in their heart. “I wanted to let you know how good you were at... how well you did... how much I enjoyed the... how much I believe in your idea of...” » Visit one-on-one with key people in your life. Look them eye to eye and let them know how and why you appreciate them. Start with your spouse (if you have one). Then your children (if you have them). Parents. Colleagues. Pastors. Friends. Teachers. Friends. Neighbors. Encourage them all. They need it. » Encouragement. There is never enough to go around. In a world of busyness, outrageous expectations, and a push harder mentality, be mindful that everyone you encounter is hungry for encouragement. Be the person who writes that note, says those words, and stirs the souls of others. Not only will it inspire others, but it will inspire you as well. Why? Because encouragement is epic. Family Life

BY W E N DY JAC K S O N

Why Your Family Needs a Pet

IF YOUR FAMILY doesn’t have a fam-

ily pet, you may want to consider it. Research continues to show that it is beneficial for children to grow up with pets. Family pets teach children about responsibility, sharing, empathy, and how to take care of others and look to their needs. In addition, research is showing that children that grow up around animals are healthier. A recent study conducted by the Finnish discovered that babies that grew up around cats and/or dogs were less likely to become ill, develop colds, have ear infections, or need antibiotics. It seems that having a pet in the home can boost a child’s immune system. It is theorized that the dander and allergens that come along with owning a pet may actually end up helping your child in the long run. Getting a family pet is encouraged. Yet, it is a major decision. When you bring a pet into your home, it should be viewed as a member of your household. The trick in today’s fastpaced world is figuring out which pet is best for your household. The following questions can help take the mystery out of what type of pet would suit your family. What is your home like? Do you live in a big

house or a small apartment? Are you buying your home, or are you renting your home? Does your home have a yard? What’s your home life like? Is someone home most of the time, or is your family only home in the evenings? Does your family travel often? Is your home noisy or quiet and calm? Once you have answered those questions, you need to decide which animal fits the maintenance level you and your family have the time to accommodate. » Lowest maintenance pets include fish, snakes, lizards, and turtles. While these aren’t interactive, cuddly fur balls, they are better than no pet at all, and they are fun to watch. The time commitment to these animals will probably be about 15 minutes a day for feeding and about an hour a week to clean tanks or cages. » Low maintenance pets include cats, small birds, rabbits, and rodents. These pets require around a half hour a day for feeding and interaction, as well as weekly cage or litter box cleaning. If you’re thinking about a cat, keep in mind that all cats are different. Each has its own personality. Some cats can be clingy, but most are independent. Like cats, rabbits and rodents can be loving pets. They are just not

as tame as felines. » Medium maintenance pets are dogs. Dogs require a lot of attention. They will need to be exercised daily. They will also require regular grooming. Dogs need a lot of human interaction, and some require obedience training. Expect to spend an hour or two each day taking care of a canine. » High maintenance pets include horses, large birds, and exotic animals. These animals require a lot of time, care, attention, and money. They also need a lot of space, so unless you live on a large piece of property, these pets probably aren’t for your family. It’s a big deal to bring a pet into your home. Go into it with the mindset that you are making a lifelong commitment to the animal. After all, the animal will be making one to you. Manners Are About Moderation WE’RE BECOMING an excessive soci-

ety. What do I mean by that? I mean... “When will it be enough?” I think back to my grandparents, who lived a very simple life. They were happy and content with their two-bedroom house, because that’s all they needed. They had a garden, they both enjoyed various hobbies, and they spent a lot of time together. Today we struggle to ever be satisfied. We always want a bigger house, a nicer car, more stuff, more exotic vacations, to be skinnier, to have fewer wrinkles, and the list goes on. Let me share an etiquette rule that might help with this. “A lady and a gentleman are always content with what they have, yet they continuously strive for self improvement and sincere service to others.” Wow. Content. Have we ever felt content? Being content doesn’t mean we don’t strive for improvement or we don’t have goals, plans, and dreams. It simply means that we don’t dwell on what we don’t have but find great joy and peace as we recognize what we do have. This is a literally a skill that can be taught and must be taught 74

to our children if they’re ever going to be truly happy. So many of us spend too much time thinking that if we could only get “x,” then we would be happy, or if “this” would happen, we would finally find peace, or as soon as I get “that” paid off, I will finally be free. We have to learn to appreciate today and the moments we’re in. Be present. Stop going “over the top” with every idea. Don’t become an extremist with your exercise, your diet, your work, your politics, etc. When you do, the other things in your life, mainly your family, suffer for it. I promise you, they do. Help your children be present. Talk often about the things you appreciate. Let me give you some examples that help our children learn how to find joy in today and to keep wants and wishes in perspective. Allow them to hear you say things like: “Wow, would you look at that sky? Let’s pull over so we can just take it all in. How blessed we are to have such a beautiful world.” “Oh my, aren’t we so fortunate to have a house with an air conditioner to save us from

this hot day?” “Isn’t it so wonderful that we don’t have to go to bed hungry? We have so much to be grateful for.” “I love spending time with you. There’s nothing that makes me happier than spending time with my children. Thank you.” Order the small size, offer the best piece to others, leave at least two days/nights a week that nothing is on the schedule for anyone, slow down, use moderation, and teach your children to be grateful. A lady and a gentleman show grace by being grateful.

WE OFTEN find that our neck and chest

are left out of the daily skin care regimen, which means they are showing age at a much faster rate than our face. Clothing often exposes the chest to the sun, making it vulnerable to sun damage and signs of aging just like the face. It’s time to treat your chest as well as you do your face. While there are many energy-based devices on the market that are used to treat wrinkles and lines on various surfaces of the skin, Ultherapy Décolletege Treatment is now the ONLY non-invasive procedure specifically indicated by the FDA to improve lines and wrinkles on the chest.

The Ultherapy Décolletage Treatment is a safe, non-invasive, non-surgical treatment that takes only 30 minutes. With one single procedure, patients notice improvement in lines and wrinkles on the chest by using safe ultrasound that stimulates the body’s natural collagen production. In addition to Ultherapy Décolletage Treatment, Ultherapy remains the only noninvasive procedure FDA cleared to lift skin on the neck, under the chin, and brow. Ultherapy is able to do this by going deeper into the tissue than lasers and radio frequency without injuring the surface of the skin. Another factor that promotes safety and

Results will unfold during the course of two to three months, with maximum improvement at six months. Ultherapy uses focused ultrasound technology to bypass the delicate upper layers of skin and target deeper tissues. Think of a magnifying glass’s ability to focus sunlight into an extremely high temperature point capable of burning. This is similar to how Ultherapy works. While ultrasound technology does not duplicate the results of plastic surgery, Ultherapy is an inviting alternative for those who are not yet ready or who are not candidates for surgery.
