season and especially welcome autumn this year after all the very hot weather we had this summer. Autumn temperatures are cooler, which makes for pleasant days outdoors. As we enter the start of autumn, I look at my list of things I want to accomplish both indoors and outdoors before the

holidays set in. Tom and I are DIYers and have worked on a lot of renovation projects for both our own home and for our rental homes. This year we have no shortage of projects to tackle, and in tackling a project, I am reminded of when I was growing up and my parents built their first (and only) home. It was an exciting time for the whole family, and we each had a job to do. My sister and I had our own bedrooms, and we were in charge of sweeping our floors once the carpenters left for the day and picking up scrap lumber, which we piled in the backyard and had a small bonfire on a cool autumn night.

When it came to decorating, it was exciting to choose our own carpeting for our rooms, as well as the drapes and furniture. My parents engaged us in the building process, and the home we all helped to build was very special to us. So every home I have helped to renovate remains special to me. If you are looking to do some renovation or updating of your home before the holidays, you need to check out all the great advertisers we highlight each month. They have been an inspiration for me with ideas to make a home holiday ready. Also, we have advertisers that can help make yourself holiday ready with personal care treatments, clothing, shoes, accessories, and more that will make you the center of attention at your next event. Autumn is a beautiful season in East Tennessee with the changing colors of the foliage, especially in the Smoky Mountains. The temperatures are just right for tackling projects or, better yet, to enjoy a festival or a UT football game! Go Vols and Happy Autumn!

Knoxville’s Only Plastic Surgery Center

C

ONSIDER THIS SCENARIO:

After years of thought and research, you (or your spouse/significant other) have decided to have plastic surgery. You asked a few close friends about good surgeons in the area and chose the one you felt the most comfortable with. Very few people know about your surgery – most of them know you’re going to be out of work for a week or two, but you have been vague about the reasons. You don’t want the world to know about your private business. Surgery is scheduled for 7:30 am at one of the local hospitals. You asked people about the hospital when you were making your surgical plans, and one of your neighbor’s friends knows someone who works there. They reassure you it’s a “good” hospital. The night before surgery you go online for some last minute research about your chosen procedure and review the information from your surgeon. Since you have to be at the hospital at 5:30 am, you pull up the map on your phone and figure it will take 35 minutes to arrive, which means you have to leave home at 4:55 am. You’re equal parts excited and nervous 6

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE September 2016

about the following day. You can’t sleep well and get up after a very short night of sleep to leave for the hospital. Arriving in the dark, the main entrance to the hospital is difficult to find – there are three or four to choose from, and none are very well marked. Entering the hospital, you don’t know where you are supposed to go to check in. You look around a mostly empty lobby until you find someone to direct you to the surgical check-in area, all the while looking at your watch. You don’t want to be late. Then you remember your neighbor’s friend. What if the friend is working and runs into you? What if the friend sees what you’re having done? You compose yourself to find the check-in, arriving a few minutes late. There you have to fill out 20 minutes worth of paperwork before being taken to the pre-operative area, where you spend the majority of the next hour sitting around waiting, nervous and uncomfortable, before final preparations for surgery begin. After surgery you are wheeled through the hospital in a wheelchair and back to another busy entrance, where your ride home has been instructed to meet you. After again waiting outside (in public) you are helped into the car and

are on your way home. This is the experience many patients who undergo plastic surgery in a hospital or hospital-affiliated surgery center have. As you can see, there are many aspects of this experience that compound an already stressful situation and can make the surgery experience unpleasant. However, there is an alternative to this experience that patients of mine have. What many people in Knoxville do not know is that the only dedicated outpatient plastic surgery center in East Tennessee sits 10 feet below my office off of Cedar Bluff Road. Built by Dr. Steven Smith in 2008, the Parkwest Plastic Surgery Center is the only fully-accredited, state-of-the-art surgery facility dedicated ONLY to plastic surgery in this area. Having a private surgery center is a benefit to my patients for the following reasons: » Privacy: Knoxville is a little big city. It’s tough to go somewhere without running into someone you know or without running into someone who knows you. I think it’s one of the things about living here that is wonderful – you

rarely meet a stranger. However, when you are choosing to have plastic surgery, running into someone who knows you on the day of surgery can be anxiety producing, especially if, like most of my patients, you want to keep a low profile. At my office and in our surgery center below, the chance “run-ins” are unlikely. My patients who work in healthcare (or whose family members work in healthcare) find this particularly comforting. » Convenience: On the day of surgery, patients are understandably nervous. By the time that the surgery date arrives, however, most patients have been to my office at least twice. They know where it is located. They know how long it takes to get there from home. They know where to go when they arrive. By being familiar with the surgery center and the office, there is a significant decrease in stress on the day of surgery. Also, from the parking lot, it’s only 20 feet before you are standing in the lobby. Contrast this to any other surgery center or hospital in the area: Circle the parking lot or the parking garage, looking for a place to park, and when you finally find one, you have to find your way from there to the front door, then from the door through the hospital to the surgery check-in desk. Not only is it time

consuming, but it adds stress to an already stressful time. » Safety: Nothing is more important than safety, especially when you are having surgery. Surgery is often compared to the aviation industry when it comes to safety checklists and the concept of the “team” approach to care. A coordinated team that works together every day is probably one of the most important factors in making the operating room a safe environment. At our surgery center, the team approach to surgery is something we practice every day. We have the same team – from anesthesia, to the operating room staff, to the preoperative and postoperative recovery staff – day in and day out. All they do is plastic surgery, every day. Everyone knows each other and what to expect both in and out of the operating room. This allows us to function as an efficient team instead of each of us putting our head down and having “tunnel vision,” where something important can be overlooked. » Cost: We’ve all heard the news stories of hospitals charging $50 for an aspirin or handing someone a $10,000 bill for a twohour ER visit. One of the biggest problems in medicine today is that the costs of everything

What many people in Knoxville do not know is that the only dedicated outpatient plastic surgery center in East Tennessee sits 10 feet below my office off of Cedar Bluff Road. The Parkwest Plastic Surgery Center is the only fully-accredited, state-of-the-art surgery facility dedicated ONLY to plastic surgery in this area.

are hidden until after you receive care. We do things very differently – you know exactly what things will cost before anything is done, including the charges for the operating room and anesthesia. In fact, we have these prices published on my website and encourage you to visit our site and see for yourself. There are lots of reasons that healthcare is expensive, but the main drivers of the rapidly increasing costs are the government and the insurance companies. With them out of the picture, our center can provide high-quality, state-of-the-art surgical care at a fraction of the cost of most hospitals. » Luxury: What good is all this if the experience is lacking? Our surgery center is, modestly put, beautiful. It is a serene environment that is clean and inviting. You feel this from the moment you arrive through the front doors until you leave through a private exit after your procedure. If you are considering plastic surgery or non-surgical cosmetic treatments, we would love to hear from you. You can visit my website at www.drjasonhall.com to see more photos of both our office and the only dedicated outpatient plastic surgery center in East Tennessee, to research procedures and treatments, and to search for pricing information. Dr. Jason Hall is a double board-certified plastic surgeon who completed his surgical training in Texas, followed by a fellowship in facial surgery at Stanford. In 2015, he established his practice in his hometown of Knoxville after practicing in Houston, Texas, for five years. He is married with two daughters.

Do You Wish Your Vision Was Perfect?

IF YOU SEE 20/20,

does that mean you have perfect vision? If you are like most people in America, your vision is not perfect, especially without help. Many refractive conditions exist, but the main three are myopia (near-sightedness), hyperopia (far-sightedness), and astigmatism (distortion caused by a misshaped cornea or crystalline lens). Depending on the severity of your refractive error, you may have several options, or you may be limited. Wearing eyeglasses is the standard method of correcting refractive error. Since our vision is very subjective, it is important to obtain an accurate prescription from an experienced eye doctor. Of equal importance is the optician fitting your glasses and the quality of the eyeglasses. Beware of cheap alternatives to high-quality eyeglasses. Contact lenses are a good choice for those wanting an alternative to eyeglasses. If you have ever been told that you are not a candidate for contact lenses, it may just be that you require specialty contact lenses. Prescribing specialty contact lenses can be challenging and requires an experienced contact lens practitioner who is skilled in fitting specialty contact lenses along with the more standard contact lenses. Refractive surgery is another option. LASIK is the most popular refractive surgery and does come with risk. However, many find the benefits outweigh the risk involved. Dr. Fry has been prescribing specialty contact lenses for nearly 20 years and has been very successful in fitting patients who were told they were not good candidates for contact lenses. Premier Eyecare has three licensed opticians on staff who are educated, trained, and licensed to fit eyeglasses properly. LASIK consultation is also available. During your eye exam, you will encounter a friendly, well-trained staff, high-tech equipment, and a comfortable environment. If you have not been satisfied with your vision, call Premier Eyecare today to schedule an appointment for an eye exam. You may be surprised to finally see what you have been missing.

our home is the same in other homes. Until we learn there is a difference. Sometimes, as an adult, we think that because a professional is nice, the person is competent at what they do. Until we learn there is a difference. We hear about how long they’ve been in practice or how busy they are and other descriptions about themselves except how competent they are. And that’s the difference. The basic question we dwell with when seeking a professional doesn’t, and shouldn’t, depend on how nice they are or how many patients they see or if they have a pretty office. We want to know if they can do the job, and by “do,” we mean are they competent. The beginning and the ending is, if you trust your body to this person, will they do the job right? The law states that a person performing a procedure “should know or should have known” what they were doing. But how do you know the difference before you place your trust? And what are your criteria in making a choice? A decision like this demands serious thought. If you don’t get your questions answered, if you still have doubts in the pit of your stomach, if you don’t think you understand a procedure thoroughly, how can you give an informed consent? And, by all means, resist and run if you sense any pressure. That should be an acid test giveaway. Because Dean Kleto, MD, and Cynthia St. Germain, BA, RN, BSN, realize the above concerns/apprehensions/questions patients have, they strive not only to inform and educate patients during their free, no-obligation consultations and their Everything Knoxville articles, but also to show their patients what the outcome of the procedures will be. Their objective is to have a state-of-the-art practice that meets their own high standards. If they do not think a procedure is appropriate for a patient, they do not hesitate to advise the patient of such. Their goal certainly is not to see how many procedures they can perform in a day. Dr. Kleto brings excellent training from Duke University and Chattanooga’s Erlanger Hospital to the surgical arena as he performs a variety of enhancing plastic surgery procedures at Parkwest Medical Center and Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge Hospital. Ms. St. Germain has a highly developed, astute aesthetic eye that, coupled with her knowledge and skill, brings a natural-looking result when she works with her patients. It can and has been said that both of these professionals have a passion for their work and are worthy of your trust.

European Fine Hardwood Floors Rediscover Old-World Craftsmanship

IT’S BEEN 11 YEARS since Valera

and Svetlana Tomescu fulfilled their dream of immigrating to the United States from their native Moldova in Eastern Europe. They believe that their goal of achieving the American dream was made possible in large part to the generosity of the people of the United States. Despite the many challenges they experienced as newlyweds in this new country with little money and very few possessions, today they are excited to be living in beautiful Knoxville, Tennessee, along with their three wonderful boys. They also feel fortunate to own their own business, European Fine Hardwood Floors. As a young boy in Moldova, Valera was introduced to woodworking by his grandfather, who was a master carpenter. Valera just loved working with wood, and his grandfather nurtured his grandson’s passion for woodworking. In Europe, where apprenticeships help develop the next generation of skilled craftsmen, Valera was able to become the highly skilled craftsman he is today. His grandfather would have been so proud to see his grandson today if he were alive. European Fine Hardwood Floors fea-

tures new hardwood flooring installation and refinishing of existing hardwood floors using the highest quality materials available, no subcontractors, and the latest technologies available, including “dustless” f loor finishing. Most homeowners assume that despite the promises of dust-free finishing made by flooring contractors, that dust is just a fact of life. Well, “dustless technology” does in fact exist, and Valera and Svetlana are proud to have made the financial investment in this technology on behalf of their customers. They don’t use the bags seen on most refinishing equipment today that allow dust to remain in your home, but instead they use specialized, high efficiency vacuums that remain outside your home that are attached to their equipment using high capacity hoses. This equipment, manufactured by Swedish-based Bona, the world’s number one innovator in the wood flooring industry since 1919, offers you the truly “dust-free” alternative to wood floor finishing that you deserve. A Bona Certified Craftsman, Valera has earned this much coveted distinction as a result of his years of experience and exten-

sive training and testing by Bona. If you have water or pet damaged hardwood floors, insist on a Bona Certified Craftsman to assure the best restoration results. European Fine Hardwood Floors is proud to be a Bona Certified Craftsman and a member of the National Wood Flooring Association and adheres to the highest standards and guidelines of both organizations. Why not rediscover old-world craftsmanship at it’s best, a level of craftsmanship that you might have thought no longer existed? Call Valera today, visit them on Facebook, or visit www.knoxvillehardwoodrefinishing. com, where you can also view customer testimonials.

A public reception will take place on Friday, September 2, from 5 to 9 pm to which the public is invited to meet the artists and view the artwork. Most of the works are for sale and may be purchased through the close of the exhibition. The First Friday reception also features Pasion Flamenca from 6 to 6:30 pm and a Jazz Jam with Vance Thompson’s Friends from 7 to 9 pm in the Black Box. Complimentary hors d’oeuvres will be available, and chocolate fondue will be provided by the Melting Pot of Knoxville. Stephen Reid Carcello: Slot Machine Downstairs gallery Stephen Carcello graduated from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville in 2009 with a degree in Studio Art and in 2013 from the University of Arizona with a Masters in Visual Communication and Design. His passion is illustrated anthropology. Through this exhibition, he seeks to present a series of work that helps elevate the coloring page so as to favor display on the mantle over display on the fridge. He scales up the coloring page and shows a universally-recognized source material. “The works I present are also meant to contrast the modern mobile app and coloring for therapy purposes,” said Stephen. “I want to point out two concrrent but seemingly opposing trends: The rise in popularity of coloring books and the rise of the mobile app modeled after video slot machines.” The vast majority of apps designed for dating and for gaming have, at their core, the same principles of slot machines. Each app has its own pull handle (swiping), shiny buttons and themes, and a reward system. This is intentional; the tech community studied video slots when designing the UI (user interface) and UX (user design) of the most popular mobile apps. But why are coloring books so popular in a time when you can just play/use a mobile app? Because there is value in weight. 14

“From this show, I want the viewer to see the profound lack of edification in mobile apps as a real problem and to see the creation of art and the use of imagination as the solution,” said Stephen. “We The People” by Antuco Chicaiza Balcony gallery “We The People” is a reminder that we, as Americans, can affect change if we unite for the greater good of our country. This show represents the power that we as a people have. The ideals that our country was founded on still hold true today. It is part of our responsibility as Americans to stand up and have our voices heard. The majority of works in this exhibition are presented in black and white, showing non-descript figures, along with the red, white, and blue, demonstrating the only colors that should be of importance in this country. Regardless of race, ethnicity, or religion, when we look at Americans, we should only see red, white, and blue: The true colors of America. The center piece is about our nation’s future and what we will do if either candidate wins. We must always remember that we are a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. Projects by Emily Taylor Display case In this exhibition, Emily Taylor will show parts of several ongoing projects in painting, drawing, and construction. Emily grew up in New York City in the ‘70s and ‘80s before circulating through Amherst, Massachusetts, Ithaca, New York, and Knoxville, Tennessee, for school and life reasons. She received her MFA in Painting and MA in Art Education from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. Taylor has shown in venues around the region and United States and has worked in museum education in Knoxville and Ithaca. Anthony M. Donaldson: A Time of Recent Creativity North Wall Local artist Anthony M. Donaldson is a

KAT bus driver. Since childhood, he has loved to draw and paint. “Art frees my mind into another world,” said Anthony. “My art is communication and expressions to those whom admire art.” Anthony aims to tell a story with his art, and the recent work he will display features many subjects such as God, Black Lives Matter, drug and alcohol abuse, human trafficking, global warming, nuclear holocaust, and black on black crime. “Cosmic Order” by Eurichea Showalter Subagh Ball Atrium Through these works, Eurichea Showalter Subagh Ball hopes to expand and magnify the viewers’ thoughts, dreams, consciousness and realities, known and unknown. Setting goals and writing things is all part of a life’s individualized process. “Imagine I’m a waitress in space,” said Eurichea. “There is no linear time. As the waitress, I’ll share your order. What is your Cosmic Order? I’ll give you some time to look over the menu of your life.” Eurichea is from Oak Ridge and now resides in Knoxville. The exhibitions are on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. Exhibition hours are Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm with additional hours on Tuesday, September 13, from 6:30 to 9:30 pm for a jazz jam in the Black Box with Vance Thompson/ Keith Brown Duo. Please note the Emporium will be closed on Monday, September 5, for the holiday. For more information, contact the Arts & Culture Alliance at 865-523-7543 or visit www.knoxalliance.com. TailSpin Racer

Coming to Dollywood’s Splash Country $2 million attraction set to open in 2017

W

ITH THE EXCITEMENT of

what is shaping up to be a record season in 2016, The Dollywood Company recently announced the addition of TailSpin Racer to Dollywood’s Splash Country for 2017. This thrilling new attraction allows up to six guests to race each other on mats through the twists and turns of TailSpin Racer’s unique spiraling tube design. The race begins with riders descending a daring first drop inside intertwined, high-speed AquaTubes. After navigating the wet and wild curves, riders emerge from the translucent tubes on a traditional mat racerstyle slide. From there, it’s an all-out race toward the splashdown finish. “TailSpin Racer is an exciting addition to the park that we know our guests are going to love,” explained Dollywood’s Splash Country General Manager, Mike Brown. “We always 16

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE September 2016

seek to add slides and attractions that will leave our guests with big smiles and memories to share. I think we’ll see a lot of fun as families and friends challenge each other to races down this great new slide.” TailSpin Racer’s slides are longer than a football field in length and stand five stories above the park. The $2 million attraction, which uses ergonomically designed starting blocks, will be located alongside Big River Pavilion near the park entrance. Dollywood’s Splash Country’s other familyfavorite attractions underscore why the park was named America’s Must-See Waterpark in 2009 by the International Association of Amusement Parks & Attractions. The park also was named a Top-10 waterpark by TripAdvisor in 2016. With RiverRush, Tennessee’s first and only water coaster, the daredevil drops of Fire Tower Falls and

Mountain Scream and the white water rafting journey on Big Bear Plunge, Dollywood’s Splash Country has thrill rides for the adventurous members of every family. For those who want a slower pace, The Cascades leisure pool, Mountain Waves wave pool, Downbound Float Trip lazy river, and children’s water play areas are a relaxing way to cool down. Voted one of America’s best waterparks by The Travel Channel, Dollywood’s Splash Country features more than 35 water adventure slides in its breathtaking natural surroundings: The Smokies. With the upcoming addition of TailSpin Racer, an impressive lineup of waterbased attractions, and fun at every splash, Dollywood’s Splash Country is the best place to beat the heat in the Smoky Mountains. West Perimeter Trail Opens at Forks of the River WMA A new multi-use recreation trail connects Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness

W E ST PERIM E TER TR AIL , a

new multi-use trail, opened in the Forks of the River Wildlife Management Area last month. This 2.4-mile moderate-difficulty trail offers an alternate connection for hikers and bikers along the west edge of the property that was most recently recognized by thousands of visitors for its blooming fields of sunflowers. The trail winds from the Whaley trailhead on Burnett Creek Road to the Will Skelton Greenway, near the McClure Lane parking lot. Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency (TWRA) owns and manages the land at Forks of the River Wildlife Management Area and maintains a partnership with Legacy Parks Foundation and the Appalachian Mountain Bike Club to build and maintain multi-use trails at Forks of the River within Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness. This new trail connects directly into the 3.6mile Will Skelton Greenway, which runs along the Tennessee River, through Ijams Nature Center, and to Island Home Park. The West Perimeter Trail is also part of the South Loop trail system in Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness, which includes more than 50 miles of trail running through city, county, state, and private land. The Urban Wilderness, including the South Loop, is a recreational, cultural, and historic corridor that incorporates 1,000 forested acres running along downtown’s south waterfront and Baker Creek Preserve, a 100acre park with eight trails of varying degrees of difficulty. When visiting Forks of the River WMA, recreationalists should be aware that it is an active hunting and habitat-protection area with special conditions. All trails in the area used for bicycling require a High Impact Conservation Permit except the Will Skelton Greenway and Whaley Trail (formerly known as Auggie’s Run and Bluff Trail). The trails are also governed by specific times of use. The Will Skelton Greenway and Whaley Trail are open year-round. All other trails are closed to non-hunters from September 6 through February 29, 2017

except Saturdays and Sundays when the area is closed to non-hunters until noon. During Spring Turkey season, April 2nd through May 15th, the trails (excluding the Will Skelton Greenway and Whaley Trail) are closed to non-hunters until noon. Forks of the River WMA is one of the largest areas included in the South Loop Trail system of Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness. More than 10 miles of the recreational trails in the loop are contained within Forks of the River, and this new trail connects with four others on the property in addition to the Greenway. For more information about the Forks

of the River WMA trails, visit www.outdoorknoxville.com/places/trails/south/ forks-of-the-river-trails. For a complete list of regulations regarding Forks of the River and more information about purchasing a High Impact Conservation Permit, visit www. tn.gov/twra. Legacy Parks Foundation, an East Tennessee non-profit organization, works to ensure that our community enjoys exceptional recreational opportunities, natural beauty, and open spaces and that those assets exist for generations to come. We work collaboratively to preserve our area’s extraordinary natural resources and to expand parks, trails, and greenways.

Boosting Brainpower T

HIS IS THE TIME of year to

think about boosting brainpower. School has started once again, and it’s time to rethink food and its impact on learning. Whole grains top the list for brain foods. Whole grains are complex carbohydrates that supply glucose in a slow, steady manner. The brain is the greediest of all organs, requiring a steady supply of glucose for nourishment. Children have a higher brain glucose metabolism compared with adults. Walnuts are another great brain food, containing 15-20% protein, essential fatty acids, vitamin E, and vitamin B6. Omega 3 fatty acids are essential for membrane permeability, which allows nutrients to enter into the brain cells and waste products to exit. This is a very important aspect for brain function. Likewise, berries such as blueberries, strawberries, and blackberries are helpful to improve memory and cognitive skills. Studies show that they block oxidative damage. Seeds such as sunflower, pumpkin, and chia all improve memory and thinking skills, while red cabbage, avocados, tomatoes, and broccoli all improve brainpower and cognitive function. Eggplant skin contains a compound called nasunin, which keeps the brain sharp by enhancing communication between brain cells and messenger molecules. Salmon and eggs are also included on the list for better brainpower. Green tea has been shown to enhance memory and the ability to focus; it also fights mental fatigue. It should be no surprise that what you eat affects how you think and recall facts. It is even

possible to increase intelligence. Breakfast is an important meal that should not be missed. Remember that in order for your brain to function properly, glucose needs to be supplied in a steady manner. According to the National Institute of Health, “breakfast consumption is associated with positive outcomes for diet quality, micronutrient intake, weight status, and lifestyle factors. Breakfast has been suggested to positively affect learning in children in terms of behavior, cognitive, and school performance.” Breakfast has been shown to improve concentration and alertness. It’s really a no brainer – skipping breakfast can negatively impact our children. Substituting good quality food into favorite recipes is also a plus when finicky eaters need that brainpower boost. For example, adding millet and cauliflower to mashed potatoes makes a delicious dish that even the pickiest eaters will have trouble discerning. When making spaghetti sauce, be sure to include carrots in the tomato recipe, which will go completely unnoticed. By camouflaging foods, you add much needed variety and nutrients that help increase school performance and may moderate behavior. It’s great to know that we have control in our hands when it comes to functioning better at school. Making sure that our children eat a good, nutritional breakfast before they head to school gives assurance that we have helped our children to be the best they can be. Foods that boost brainpower should be a top priority for better outcomes for our children.

It’s Your Face

O

NE OF THE fastest growing areas

in aesthetic medicine today is the use of injectable cosmetic fillers. These soft tissue fillers, which are injected into the skin, help to fill facial wrinkles, restoring a smoother, more youthful appearance. There are a wide range of fillers on the market today that are manufactured by a number of reputable pharmaceutical companies, each who have their own unique features and benefits. As to which filler is best for you, I would recommend that you consult with a trained and licensed medical professional with experience in the field of aesthetic medicine. While it’s not unusual for patients to take advantage of special offers available on these fillers, I encourage you to exercise caution here. No matter how great the offer is, remember that it’s your face. The money you save is no replacement for a licensed and experienced medical professional who I recommend inject your filler. And a great savings is no guarantee that the filler you receive is the best filler for you. At The Face Place™, I perform every facial filler injection. I am an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) with a Master’s Degree in Nursing with a concentration in Family Practice. I am also a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner. I have trained extensively with each facial filler company many times and keep this training current with any and all new techniques recommended. I founded The Face Place™ for individuals just like you who wish to take advantage on non-surgical facial rejuvenation in a relaxed medical setting. Patients should have total confidence not only in the facial filler being recommended, but also in the medical professional that provides the services. If you would like to learn how you can enjoy a more youthful and younger version of yourself, with the confidence in the medical provider that you deserve, I would like to invite you to call me to schedule your free, no-obligation consultation. Enjoy a new, longer lasting, more natural looking, youthful you.

Autumn is one of my favorite seasons, but truthfully, every season is, as every one is unique in its own way. But this year’s long anticipated fa ll season will be especially welcome after the summer’s record breaking high temperatures. With the arrival of fall, we each look forward to transitioning our home’s décor, both indoors and out-of-doors, from summer to autumn. We officially celebrate the first day of autumn on September 22nd, but if you’re ready to begin your fall transition now, CH Interiors & Gifts is the only name you need to remember. You’ll discover items for fall that will help you welcome autumn at your home with colorful scented and unscented candles, votives, and wax melts. HE 37TH ANNUAL Greekfest will take place at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, located at 4070 Kingston Pike, and is sure to be the most special of festivals to date. Features include authentic Greek food and pastries, live music, traditional Greek dancing and costumes, and shopping. The popular a la carte menu includes traditional favorites such as roast lamb, gyro, souvlaki, pastichio, spanakopita, Greek salad, Greek pizza, and saganaki. Also, new this year is a savory Greek pastry favorite, tiropita! Tiropitas are layers of buttered phyllo dough filled with cheese. Delicious! Sadly the beautiful mosaic tile, stained glass, and the entire interior of the church

were destroyed by fire in April of last year. Festival guests will be invited into our temporary sanctuary, located in the gym. There we will once again offer presentations on Greek Orthodox religion and history. The marketplace will offer imported jewelry, gifts, and cultural art. Also, enjoy an authentic taverna, Greek wines, coffee, and frappes (iced coffee). Papou’s Pantry and YiaYia’s Cuisina will offer authentic Greek products for purchase. As always, the St. George youth will offer traditional and modern Greek dance performances. Admission is $2 for adults and free for children 12 and under. Weekend passes are also available for $3. and emergencies happen. When they do, it’s time for Fido to have a vacation of his own! A quality kennel offers your four-legged kid a safe and secure home away from home. Great care of your dog doesn’t stop when you’re away. Some families arrange for in-home care. It’s a huge responsibility for a caregiver who must feed, exercise, and provide medications at the required times. And if they keep Fido at their home, he’s likely unfamiliar with the surroundings and nearby streets. The best reasons for selecting a boarding kennel include: » Avoiding the anxiety of being left alone, in unfamiliar surroundings or cooped up in your car should you take him with you. » Being safe and sound where he is welcome and expected. Staff is ready to devote every day, all day to guests and provide more care and interaction than a friend or neighbor. » Being able to enjoy the company of other canines, if sociable. Dogs enjoy the

opportunity to interact with their like kind. » Being observed by staff trained to look for potential medical problems. John and JeanAnn Carrigan, owners of Ms. C’s, highly recommend touring their facilities before selecting the best vacation for Fido. “We are fortunate to have several kennels in this area,” said JeanAnn. “We each operate our kennel just a little different and have our own philosophy. Asking many questions during your private tour will help canine parents make the best decision for their four-legged kids.” Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits welcomes tours anytime during lobby hours. EVERY YEAR in the fall bicyclists of all

skill levels descend on the First Baptist Church in Tellico Village to ride the beautiful back roads of East Tennessee. Journeying through some of the most picturesque areas of Loudon, Monroe, and McMinn counties, bicyclists are treated to the scenes of fall colors, farm fields in lush color, and unbelievable views! This year the 11th Provision Proton Therapy Center Tour de Tellico will be held on October 1 and, as always, be hosted by the Rotary Club of Tellico Lake. The event begins early that morning, with the longer rides starting at 8 am. The Rotary Club provides water and snacks for the riders at several clearly marked rest stops along the various routes and a light snack at the end of the ride. Four ride levels The “Tour” is designed to be attractive to riders of all skill levels. The longest is a Century 100-mile ride, followed by a 100K ride (which is about 62 miles), a 50K (about 30 miles), and a 25K (about 15 miles). 30

“The Tour de Tellico is all about having a terrific day in the saddle while enjoying the most incredible sights in East Tennessee,” said Jim Wiese, Tour de Tellico Chair. “It’s important to recognize that this is not a race, just an enjoyable ride to challenge your personal best, have some fun, and raise money for worthy local charities.” However, a competitive spirit does kick in on the longer rides. The folks that participate in the 100-mile Century will complete the ride in four to six hours and will often drive hundreds of miles to participate. In past years, riders have come from Colorado, California, Texas, Georgia, and Connecticut.

Charities receive all the proceeds “Last year we made sizable donations to the Loudon Boys & Girls Club, Good Shepherd Center, Monroe County Imagination Library, Good Samaritan Center of Loudon County, and other Rotary Charities,” said John Everson, President of the Rotary Club of Tellico Lake. “Our goal is to top last year’s proceeds to help these charities continue to offer their beneficial services to the community.” All biking routes have been carefully checked for the bikers’ safety and personally traveled and mapped out on the Internet. History

Morristown is Attracting Redevelopment

ABOUT 50 MINUTES northeast of

Knoxville lies the city of Morristown. It is nestled in the Lakeway Area near Clinch Mountain and Cherokee Lake. It is easily accessible off I-81 by following the “Historic Downtown Morristown” signs from Exit 8. While not the oldest town in the Lakeway Area, it was incorporated in 1853. It was originally divided by two counties until Hamblen County was formed from parts of Jefferson and Grainger counties. The original settlement was east of Turkey Creek near two major crossroads that enabled travel by both Native American and ScotsIrish settlers.

Downtown Morristown was in its peak growth in the 1950s as a regional shopping and commercial hub. Major stores like Parks-Belk Co. and Sterchis, along with local shops like Robertson Turner Drugstore, Dawson’s Mens Shop, and others, lined Main Street. A local catastrophe and the urban renewal and suburbanization of Morristown changed its course. Turkey Creek flooded many of the stores in the early 1960s (it is now channeled underneath some of them), and Morristown’s urban renewal effort included the construction of the now one-of-a-kind historic SkyMart walkway that provides a second story pathway. Concurrent with this construction, the advent of shopping centers to both the east and west hurt downtown businesses. Many moved, and some permanently closed. The SkyMart project was completed in 1967. It was intended to open up upstairs spaces to commerce, but with the suburban movement, there was not enough commercial demand to make second story entrances feasible. Rents fell, and buildings emptied. It was not until the last couple of decades that downtown began a revival. Investors

32

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE September 2016

with a historic interest purchased buildings, sensitively remodeled them, and established specialty shops and restaurants. Others purchased some of the larger spaces for endeavors that never got off the ground and are now vacant. Morristown started a Main Street Program, the Crossroads Downtown Partnership, which was initially certified in 2009. It became an independent non-profit in 2014. Its efforts have fostered investment, showcased the city, guided volunteer energy, and brought grants to downtown. Its most recent award is a two-year grant from TN Department of Community and Economic Development through its Rural Development program to start and manage a center for entrepreneurs located on the SkyMart. Using the Co.Starters program as a base, it is working with Knoxville Entrepreneur Center, Walters State Community College, Hamblen Co. Board of Education, Carson Newman University, and the private sector to provide this regional center for the Lakeway Area. The energy supplied by Crossroads Downtown Partnership coupled by the city’s farsighted use of CDBG funds for façade grants is helping Morristown become a viable and sustainable commercial downtown. From the 2009-2015 fiscal year, some $1,535,956 total investment in public and private façade improvements have occurred, including brick repointing, window replacement, painting, and roof repairs. Since this has been a successful model for revitalization, the city is extending the façade grant program to two other areas in need of improvement. This financial investment plus grants and private sector fundraising has turned Morristown’s future on a positive course. Another recent development is having a positive impact. In the spring of 2016, Morristown’s commercial core became a National Register Historic District, thus allowing investors to take federal tax credits for commercial development that follows National Register guidelines. This federal incentive plus the local public/private investment makes Morristown ripe for developers to help transform some of our larger idle building spaces. Downtown is a destination; folks come to Morristown to dine at award-winning restaurants, shop

at boutique specialty gift and clothing shops, take part in activities such as dance, art, and martial arts lessons, walk the SkyMart as it is a hub of Morristown’s trail system, have fun at events, and enjoy our thriving farmers’ market. The nearby Rose Center for the cultural arts is an important element of our city’s life, as is Encore theater group and the Morristown Theater Guild.

The above photo by Peter Michael shows a slice of downtown. Often considered just an industrial area, Morristown has its own beauty that is the hub of its growth. It is no longer neglected but is inviting and a place to both live and play. We work closely with the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance of Knox Heritage to help us conserve our resources. Be sure to attend the Preservation Power Summit that will be held in Morristown on November 4th. That event will give you a wonderful opportunity to explore Morristown and many of its destinations. For more information and investment opportunities, call Crossroads Downtown Partnership at 423-312-1476. You may also download the mobile app, Downtown Morristown, for event details, virtual tours, a business directory, and other information.

The East Tennessee Preservation Alliance works to preserve the structures and places with historic or cultural significance in Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Hamblen, Jefferson, Knox, Loudon, Monroe, Morgan, Roane, Scott, Sevier, and Union counties. ETPA partners with Knox Heritage to serve as the regional arm for preservation activities in these 16 counties.

Need a Custom Closet? 5 Questions to Ask Yourself

T

IRED OF SIFTING through the

never-ending amount of garments you have hanging in your closet just to put together the single outfit you had in mind? Can’t find the pants to match the shirt? While life can be messy and disorganized, a closet should not be. It should make life easier. A custom closet that’s designed and organized based on your needs provides much more organization and maximizes storage space, which means less frustration. Tailored Living of Knoxville professionals will meet with you in your home, listen to your specific needs, and work with you to design a space that fits your everyday lifestyle. Here are some preliminary questions to ask yourself before calling for your in-home consultation: How much space do I have to work with? This is the primary aspect to factor into your closet planning. Knowing how much space you have will help the professional Tailored Living designer determine the best organizational system for your closet. Also, consider ceiling height when you take inventory of the

closet space. Making use of every inch can be important if you’re working with a small space. What types of clothing am I storing? Some people only want to hang shirts, blouses, and pants in their closet and leave other items such as undergarments stored in a bedroom dresser. Think about what types of clothing and accessories you want to store inside your closet and it will help you put together a picture of your organizational needs. Which accessories and organizers do I need? Convenient accessories like jewelry drawers, fold-out ironing boards, tilt-out hampers, drawer organizers, and pullout belt racks are among the many options that bring order to the closet and help you easily find items. What do you want to display for convenience? From ladies’ scarves to men’s ties, for multiple items of the same type of clothing, there are closet organizers and designs that provide

convenience and style. What is my budget? While the cost really depends on the size of your closet, a basic system with hanging and shelves will cost less than including cabinets and drawers. Additionally, the finish color you choose will impact your budget. A white finish will always be less expensive than wood grains and darker finishes. These are just a few ideas to keep in mind when thinking about your custom closet design. Once you have considered your budget, what you need to store, and the space you have to work with, Tailored Living of Knoxville will design a custom closet system with features built around you and your lifestyle!

Bad Fido! S

OMETIMES OUR BELOVED four-

legged kids do the wrong things. If your family has a puppy in training or perhaps an older dog who has an occasional accident, and if you own Oriental rugs, you know where I’m going with this article. When your pet has an accident on one of your Oriental rugs, don’t panic. If you act quickly, you can save your valuable rug. Pet urine has a high alkalinity factor that can potentially have a very negative effect on your rug’s wool and cotton fibers, which by nature are acidic. The alkaline solution can cause both the acidic dyes to bleed and can burn the rug’s acidic natural fibers. Left untreated, pet urine will stain your rug and may result in the rotting and deterioration of its fibers. Act quickly! Blot up as much of the urine as quickly as possible, then call a professional Oriental rug cleaner who is both experienced and trained to clean and preserve Oriental rugs. At Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning, we have three decades of carpet cleaning and rug washing experience. We are one of the few Oriental rug washing specialists that have our own rug washing facility, where your rugs are professionally washed using our very own proprietary system, all under my personal supervision. Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning is proud to announce that we’re a WoolSafe Approved Service Provider committed to promoting best practices in wool rug and carpet cleaning.

But time is of the essence. While not all rugs can be saved, the likelihood for success is greatly enhanced by swift action on your part. And while we’re on the subject, if your home’s upholstery or wall-to-wall carpet has spots that seem impossible to remove, I encourage you to call us. In our 30+ years of experience in carpet and upholstery cleaning, we’ve discovered a number of unique processes that will often remove stains that homeowners and other cleaning services were unable to remove. If Fido had an accident on your favorite Oriental rug or if you’ve got hard-to-clean spots on your carpeting or upholstery, one call to Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning may help get man’s best friend out of the dog house. To learn more and to discover what differentiates us from the competition, visit www. superiorofknoxville.com to view our informative video, where seeing is believing.

Protect and Beautify Your Outdoor Surfaces, Too This is the time of year we find ourselves trying to capitalize on the Tennessee beauty that surrounds us. We may spend more evenings grilling on our deck, relaxing on the patio, and entertaining friends and family outdoors, as well as inside. Most of us realize how blessed we are to live in one of the most beautiful areas of the world as we take advantage of nature’s splendor.

T

HROUGHOUT THE YEARS,

I have noticed something in regard to outdoor surface cleaning. Generally speaking, when we clean the inside of a home only, within just a few weeks the carpet and tile areas may begin to show traffic patterns again. This is because when we walk from our car or street into our home, we can track soil from the outside right through the areas we had just cleaned. However, the homes that are cleaned inside AND out essentially stop the cycle of soil in its tracks. As a result, these homes STAY clean much longer than the homes in which we clean the inside only. Because we are able to eliminate ALL soil, dirt, and debris from every walkable surface outside the home, traffic patterns are not reformed after the cleaning; therefore, inside areas stay clean.

Although we work year-round, for the homeowner that really wants to stomp out dirt, grime, mildew, and traffic patterns, it starts outside and should be done before cold weather arrives. Once all outside surfaces are clean and foreign matter removed, they should be sealed for easy surface cleaning. Imagine cleaning your driveway or walkway by simply spraying the garden hose across them! That’s only part of the advantage of sealing these areas. Not only do sealed areas clean up in a snap, but the integrity of your concrete and brick pavers is preserved. This can protect them from sustaining damage due to climate or standing water. Our patented equipment is fully customizable to the job. Not only can we tackle the messiest industrial jobs, but we are able to finely adjust our equipment to protect your

indoor surfaces as well. With a perfect combination of CO-OWNER heat, pressure, and extraction, even the toughest areas John of your home can Fitzwilliam sparkle like new. And we always use purified water and “green” emulsifiers on your carpet, so you can rest assured that no dangerous residue is left buried in your carpet fibers. Discover Sustainable Furniture

W

E A L L D E S I R E high-

quality, long lasting furniture in our homes. But some types of furniture are not built to last, and certain manufacturing processes can actually cause harm to our environment through greenhouse gas emissions and the landfill debris.

The many benefits of buying sustainable furniture include: » Your family’s health. Unsustainable furniture often contains toxic chemicals, such as varnish, paint, glue, or formaldehyde, that continue to emit VOCs that can cause cancer, birth defects, and other health issues, particularly in children. Our Amish furniture craftsmen use safer natural practices in the making of their furniture, providing you with the peace of mind you deserve. » Better for your environment. Solid wood is one of the best products for creating sustainable furniture. The environmental footprint of real hardwood is minimal compared to the alternatives – and even more so if the wood comes from a sustainable forest, which ours does. » Solid hardwoods are more durable. If you’ve ever purchased a lower quality furniture from the typical furniture or “big box” store, you will discover that this furniture is often made with chipboard or press-wood, which deteriorates with time and moisture. Amish made furniture uses only solid hardwoods. » Sustainable furniture is more beautiful. The natural grain of wood is always far

superior to a composite lookalike, which is basically “wallpaper furniture.” The rich luster of a hand-rubbed natural finish can’t be replicated by laminates or paper veneers. » Longer lasting. Our Amish furniture, unlike cheaper imitation furniture that ends up in the landfill, can be refinished, which adds to its longevity. At Amish Excellence, our real solid wood furniture often costs far less to buy than similar furniture at most big name furniture stores. Our sustainable furniture will last you a lifetime and will be safer and more attractive in your home as well. Our furniture is actually the most inexpensive furniture you will ever purchase, as you only have to buy it once in your lifetime before passing it as a legacy to the next generation for another lifetime of use. Your children and the environment will both thank you.

September in the Garden S

EPTEMBER IS such

a welcome relief after August. I’m sure that’s a purely psychological reaction, because it isn’t as if the weather automatically changes with the turning of the page on the calendar. Nevertheless, I always breathe a sigh of relief when I see September appear. Even though my children are past the age of “back to school,” there’s a sense of new beginnings. We can get back in our yards without having a heatstroke and try again! » Head outside as soon as it’s bearable and take a good look around. Have you lost plants? Do you have disease and insects invading your yard? Did summer storms cause damage to trees and shrubs? What needs to be cut back, divided, pruned, or given last rites? What needs a little fertilize? Take stock of what you have to work with. » The most important task of fall comes next: Cleaning up. Pull up ugly

annuals, cut back perennials, and prune dead/damaged/ diseased branches out of trees and shrubs. Make sure you get up any diseased leaves that are on the ground! We have had a terrible year with fungus, and leaving those leaves there allows the fungal spores to overwinter. Cleaning up will also remove insect hiding places. » Now it’s time to plan what you would like to do. It’s also a good time to do it! Trees and shrubs (and some perennials) do best if planted in the fall, because they have all winter to get roots established. Our soil typically doesn’t freeze, so the roots don’t go dormant and will continue to grow. Your selection will not be as extensive as it was in the spring, but you may be able to score some deals. » Perennial gardens may need a little love. Spring and summer bloomers can be divided now. Dead foliage can be cut back. Deadheading fall bloomers may give you another round of blooms! Call if you

have questions. » Pansy 101. You get more bang for your buck out of this little plant than any other annual, because it can give you eight months of color. There are some things you need to know, however: 1. There is no such thing as a “winter” pansy. 2. There is definitely no such thing as a “summer” pansy! A pansy is a pansy, and they all like the same thing: Cool weather. Plant them this month and they’ll last until next May. They need to have full sun and good drainage and like to be fed a balanced fertilizer regularly. 3. Pansies and violas are in the same family, so whatever makes one happy will work for the other. » Mum 101. Let’s start with the basic: Perennial mums are sold at garden centers and are tall and leggy fellows. The little balls of color you can buy every place you go are hybrids and may or may not come back, depending on when you plant them and what kind they are. They may also come back a different color or come back as dozens of little “mum-lets” instead of as a single plant. Now for the rest of the story: 1. Mums have a bloom season of four to six weeks, which is decreased by heat and lengthened by cool temps. You can buy yourself some extra time by deadheading, however. 2. Mums like full sun and good drainage. 3. If you want blooms all season, stick them in the ground in their pot, and when they finish blooming, stick another one in its spot. How do you think they do it at Dollywood and Opryland? » How did your vegetable garden do? Organic insecticides, careful watering, and “crop rotation” gave us a bountiful crop, but I’m hearing that not everyone had good luck. Call us if you have questions. » Houseplants that are going to come back inside will need a systemic insecticide applied now so you don’t bring in unwanted houseguests. Any that got really happy outside can be up-potted if necessary. » I would be terribly remiss if I didn’t remind you to water. We have had some good rain this year, but September and October can be very dry. Stay vigilant! » My last suggestion is to mulch if you haven’t done so this year. It will keep your soil temps and moisture levels more stable in the winter months. Remember that we will have straw and pumpkins in addition to our beautiful mums and pansies. We also have some really cute fall decorations! Stop by and see us for your fall plans!

How Often Do Family and Friends Enjoy Your Home’s Outdoor Living Spaces?

Home

I

F YOUR HOME isn’t equipped with

retractable screens, the answer is likely not often enough. Why? Because the hot summer sun and biting insects are probably keeping you indoors. But there’s a solution. While homeowners across the country are increasingly creating today’s popular outdoor “living areas” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanentlyinstalled grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially made to be weather-proof, the hot afternoon sun and biting insects often keep homeowners from using their new outdoor spaces to their full potential. Retractable screens provide the perfect solution to these problems. By combining indoor and outdoor living spaces, these innovative screen solutions enhance and promote the outdoor living experience. They provide shade and allow people to enjoy outdoors during hot summer days, extending the time spent on patios while keeping annoying, biting insects at bay. Large, motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of a building, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. And the best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish the views or esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many of the retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. Because these retractable screens are available in different custom colors and wood grain finishes, they also help to provide a seamless transition with your home’s interior or exterior color schemes. The screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and be connected to your home’s automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection is called for. Start enjoying your home’s outdoor living spaces to their full potential today. For more information about retractable screen options, visit www. phantomscreens.com.

HERE’S A GREAT SCENE in The Last T Waltz – the documentary about The Band’s final concert – where director Martin Scorsese

is discussing music with drummer/singer/ mandolin player Levon Helm. Helm says, “If it mixes with rhythm, and if it dances, then you’ve got a great combination of all those different kinds of music: Country, bluegrass, blues music, show music.’’ To which Scorsese, the inquisitive interviewer, asks, “What’s it called then, ‘‘Rock & roll?’” Clearly looking for a more specific answer but realizing that he isn’t going to get one, Marty laughs. “Rock & roll!’’ Well, that’s the way it is sometimes: Musicians

play music and don’t necessarily worry about where it gets filed. It’s the writers, record labels, managers, etc. who tend to fret about what “kind” of music it is. And like The Band, the members of Railroad Earth aren’t losing sleep about what “kind” of music they play – they just play it. When they started out in 2001, they were a bunch of guys interested in playing acoustic instruments together. As Railroad Earth violin/ vocalist Tim Carbone recalls, “All of us had been playing in various projects for years, and many of us had played together in different projects. But this time, we found ourselves all available at the same time.”

Hal Holbrook in “Mark Twain Tonight!”

W

September 30 at 8 pm at the Tennessee Theatre

HEN THE CALENDAR

turned to 2014, it laid down a milestone for the longest running show in American Theatre history – the 60th year for Mark Twain Tonight! The New York Times reviewed Hal Holbrook’s third New York engagement in 1977: “Hilariously funny. We see him not as the precursor of Will Rogers or even H. L. Mencken, but clearly as a prototypal Lenny Bruce, so antiestablishment you wonder why they allowed him into his century.” Holbrook has shown us Mark Twain the social critic, whom George Bernard Shaw called “America’s Voltaire.” The show doesn’t stop evolving. Three new numbers have added another hour to its revolving repertoire of material: One on the Christian Bible, another from the feuding clans in Huckleberry Finn killing each other off, and another on the fate of the laboring class in America. It was a fateful decision for Holbrook when he sat at his desk in a small $79/month New York apartment in 1954 and began searching Twain’s writings for material that might work on the stage and feed his family. One key decision he made: Don’t update him. Portray Mark Twain

as the aging character the world recognizes –a wild white head of hair, beetle brows and moustache, the white suit, and never break the illusion that it is Twain himself speaking in his own time. Let the audience update him. That has made the show more powerful because human behavior doesn’t change. Neither does its foolishness. That’s the joke. This total disguise of himself has given Holbrook the benefit of another career as himself in motion pictures like Magnum Force, Wall

Street, Creepshow, Water for Elephants, Lincoln, and Into the Wild, for which he received an Academy Award nomination. Television films and series earned him five Emmy Awards, a total of 12 nominations. With 98 stage plays in New York and regional theatres across the country, he’s said, “I’ve been on the road most of my life.” Visit www.tennesseetheatre.com for more information. D

O YOU NEED updates in your

kitchen or bathroom? Do you like to save time and money? These people do. Here’s what they and many others are saying about Resurfacing Solutions:

“Resurfacing Solutions did an outstanding job on 30-year-old kitchen counters and shower stalls in a rental property. Everything now looks new, and all for a fraction of what it would’ve cost for replacements. Several neighbors and family members have peeked inside, and they can’t believe they’re the original countertops and showers. Thanks for a fantastic job!” – A.H., Knoxville “Our shower stall looked old and dingy. A friend recommended we get it resurfaced. I’m so glad we did; it looks like we bought a brand new stall but for A LOT less money. We had a small area that needed to be touched up (our fault), and they came back right away and fixed it free of charge.” – L.L., Knoxville “We love our new countertops! The guys were very professional, prompt, and trustworthy! Everything was clean and back in order when they finished. We highly recommend them. Just do it; you won’t be sorry!” – H.Z., Knoxville TN

AMOS LEE

September 26 • 8 PM Tennessee Theatre

D

URING THE COURSE of more than a dozen years and six studio albums, Amos Lee has continued to evolve, develop, and challenge himself as a musician. With SPIRIT, he makes his biggest creative leap yet. Most notably, for the first time, Lee acted as his own producer. While his last two albums bore the stamp of strong producers – Joey Burns of Calexico on 2011’s Mission Bell (which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, Amazon, and iTunes charts, and spun off a hit single with “Windows are

Rolled Down”) and Jay Joyce (Little Big Town, Eric Church, Cage the Elephant) on 2013’s Mountains of Sorrow, Rivers of Song – Lee finally felt ready to take over the helm. “I’ve been wanting to produce my own record for a long time,” he says, explaining that he met with numerous candidates before concluding that he should make the move. “What I wanted to provide was a place for musicians to come and feel they were able to express themselves and contribute in their own voice the way I was able to contribute in mine.”

The family came to us in need of a larger, open concept home for entertaining and gathering. Our designers surprised them with three concepts, flipping the location of the kitchen with the dining in order to open up the kitchen to the main living space and give them a large island! The kitchen is now open to the lake view and has more counter

space, storage, and function! Narada Michael Walden

I

F YOU PRODUCED records for

people like Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, George Michael, Mariah Carey, Steve Winwood, Ray Charles, Gladys Knight, Rev Al Green, Barbra Streisand, Lionel Ritchie, Elton John, Sting, Carlos Santana, Stevie Wonder, Wynonna Judd, and The Temptations, or was named by Billboard Magazine as one of the “Top Ten Producers with the Most Number One Hits,” or had your music in blockbuster movies like The Bodyguard, Free Willy, Beverly Hills Cop II, 91/2 Weeks, Stuart Little, and other huge films, you might be tempted to quit while you’re ahead. Narada Michael Walden feels that he’s just begun and is making that statement in many ways. A while back I had the opportunity to chat with Narada by phone while he was taking a break at his Tarpan Records studio. We chatted about a wide range of things, including his then just released album, “Evolution.” Narada was recently quoted as saying that the album reflected his spirituality and his renewed feeling for life, so our chat started off with me asking him to expound on that statement. “From my side, I had never had children before,” he said. “I didn’t think I was going to have children. I waited very late in life to be blessed by the gift from God. I was 61 when I had my first child, but this completely stopped my world, and it shocked me. You know my life is limited on the earth. They’ll outlive me, so I want to make sure that they go forward, that they are given the gifts that God wants them to have. I’d like my life to go forward, help my children go forward, help my wife, and all my friends – everything move forward. That’s what my evolving purpose is. I really believe that God is good and great and mighty and blesses us on a daily basis.” When I asked what he hoped people would get from his album, Narada’s response was quite intense. “I graduated from high school in 1970, so that would put me there the last four years, ’67, ’68 ’69, ’70. A lot of what I think about my life stems from my high school meets now. So the ’60s feeling meets now is always kind of with me. I’m always kind of paralleling what I felt, what I saw from the bands in the ’60s in a way, and the heart of the ’60s and seeing people come together in the ’60s, right? So just break out and come together in that and/or you saw a lot of eruptions of violence, a lot of people coming together who didn’t like each other. In the south, you 58

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE September 2016

can’t go to school if you’re a certain color, you can’t drink from certain fountains, yet all of that started being exposed to where this was so ridiculous. “I like that aspect of the ’60s of how things were exposed, and then we started working on making it better. I see the same thing happening now again. We’re being forced to come together as humanity to be a stronger people, and I like that aspect of it. I like all that; it’s the ’60s all over again. So that element is always with me as I am living my life.” Albums with the complexity of “Evolution” normally take a year or more to make. Not so with this album. “I can’t really tell you how long it took but over a period of six months,” he said. “I also took the song ‘Long and Winding Road’ by The Beatles a couple of years back and re-sang it and re-worked it. A few songs I had in my vault, like ‘Tear the House Down’, that I wrote with Lionel Richie 20 years ago. I took the inspiration of it and re-cut it. People want to feel something. They don’t mind coming and paying to see a show and feel something.” N a r a d a ’s t r e a t m e n t o f Richie Havens’ “Freedom” is especially powerful. I was interested in learning what drove him to cover that classic tune. “I’m a rock and roll man,” he said. “In my heart of hearts, I’m a rock and roll man. I love the spirit of Hendrix, of Richie Havens, of the people that can do it, man! Really do it! I mean really just shake it up. That’s what I most admire. When I was a little kid, I admired Ray Charles’ live records. I admired Little Richard. Little Richard made me feel it! I just love all that control of the electricity! So I’m turned on by that. It just can’t help but overspill into that record.” Narada’s electricity will overspill to you when you hear it. Keep up with Narada’s musical world at www. naradamichaelwalden.com, and read the expanded version of this interview at www.boomerocity.com.

Travel America

The Smart Traveler’s Guide to Affordable Autumn Travel

A

RE YOU in need of

a vacation but would rather skip the cost and the crowds during the busy travel months? You’re in luck; fall is considered the shoulder season at destinations across the country, which means you can relax and enjoy America’s beauty without breaking the bank. Shoulder seasons are travel enthusiasts’ best-kept secret. Autumn, falling right between the busier summer vacation period and end-of-the-year holidays, offers plenty of affordable options. So give into your wanderlust and start planning with these travel tips for an amazing fall getaway.

Watch the weather

When deciding on a destination for fall travel, 62

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE September 2016

be sure to research the weather. In some locales, fall is the rainy season. In others, fall is simply an extension of summer. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is the perfect example. Temperate weather and warm ocean water, paired with fewer travelers, makes this a prime destination for autumn adventures. If you’re craving fall colors, explore regions with sunny days and crisp nights. National parks are a wonderful option, as they’re celebrating the centennial of the National Parks System throughout 2016. Check out Yosemite or Arcadia National Park, both well-known for fantastic fall foliage. Wherever you go, remember fall weather can be fickle. Be sure to select a location with a reliable climate.

Analyze accommodations

The shoulder season brings fewer crowds, which means not only a less stressful trip, but also less costly accommodations. Researching location-specific websites, like www.visitmyrtlebeach.com, you will discover many great options, from beach-side bungalows to chic city condos. Resort costs often drop during autumn months, but so do the costs of private

accommodations. House rentals may be the right home-away-from-home for you. Bonus: You might even have some negotiating power during the slow months.

Explore eateries

The fall provides a bounty of fresh flavors in regions throughout the country, making this time ideal for foodies or anyone who simply enjoys a scrumptious meal. Some destinations offer “stay and dine” deals to highlight local cuisine at an incredible price, so do your research and make reservations early. If you want the food to be a central theme throughout your trip but don’t want to battle for a table every night, seek destinations with a new or revitalized culinary scene. Underground foodies are flocking to Myrtle Beach, home to many up-and-coming chefs offering diverse flavors that will awaken and surprise your palate, such as liquid nitrogen tuna at The Chemist, Low Country egg rolls at 2nd Avenue Pier, or mango gazpacho at Chive Blossom. The secret’s out: Fall may just be the ideal time for a vacation. Because you’ll get more for less, you may just make it an annual tradition.

Financial Planning for Young Couples with Children

W

HILE MANY indi-

vidua ls feel they can postpone f ina ncia l planning until later in life, perhaps 10 or more years prior to retire- John Fawaz CERTIFIED ment, financial planning takes on FINANCIAL PLANNER™ an even more important role for adults with children. In fact, financial planning for parents is imperative. Here are a few helpful considerations for parents who recognize the need to create a comprehensive financial plan to protect their family’s security. Budgeting: Budgeting with children can be challenging, as children often require unexpected expenses. But knowing where your money is going is essential. There are many free apps that can help you create and manage your family budget. But avoid accumulating debt to keep up with expenses, particularly high-interest credit card debt. Debt management is critical at this stage to avoid digging a financial hole you may not be able to climb out of easily. Life Insurance: Most couples are under insured. As a rule of thumb, $100,000 of life insurance replaces $500 of monthly income. If you think your family will need $3,000 monthly should you pass away, then you’ll require $600,000 of life insurance. While that may sound excessive to some, 20-year term life insurance may be less expensive than you might imagine. Buy the life insurance you need and avoid those plans that offer expensive investment options. Will: What if you were to die without a will? If you do, the State of Tennessee provides for individuals who die without a will that may produce an end result different than what you might have chosen for your family. Parents with young children should name a guardianship for their children in an event of a premature death. You don’t want the state to determine that for you. Ideally you should have an attorney draft your will, but if your needs are basic, there are online alternatives, such as Legal Zoom, where you can create a will for under $100. College Planning: Young couples are often obsessed with college planning for their young children. But don’t neglect your retirement planning. Make sure you’re saving enough to avoid burdening your children later in life. Set a goal of becoming debt-free in retirement. It’s never too early, or for that matter, too late, to begin planning for you and your family’s financial future. To learn more, call 865-558-8182 or visit www.financialpartnerstn.com.

may have graduated from the University of Tennessee last spring, but her work on campus isn’t over yet. Christine curated “Land, Sea and Spirit: Alaska Native Art from the 19th and 20th Centuries,” which is currently on display at the McClung Museum. “A family connection piqued my interest in Alaska Native art,” said Christine. “Much of my mother’s family lives in Sitka, and my great-aunt Ethel, who is Haida and Tsimshian, is an Alaska Native activist who fought for native sovereign rights during the 1970s. My husband, son, and I lived in Alaska for two years, and I felt a deep reverence for the beautiful art and history of Alaska Native people.” Christine earned her bachelor’s degree in American Studies. Her classes included anthropology, history, art history, religious studies, and English literature. “I recommend this diverse, interdisciplinary course of study to anyone interested in a highly personalized undergraduate experience,” she said. Christine plans to pursue a career that will allow her to work in libraries and museums. Currently she’s the coordinator for

the Friends of the Knox County Public Library, a nonprofit that supports the library system, the East Tennessee History Center, the McClung Collection, and the Tennessee Archive of Moving Image and Sound. “Although I just completed curating the small mini-exhibit at the McClung, I look forward to continuing my research into Alaska Native art,” she said. “It’s an obsession that shows no sign of abating! I am slated to begin pursuing a master’s degree in museum studies in the fall of 2017.” In preparing the artifacts for the exhibit, one of Christine’s biggest challenges was finding the true history behind them. “Some of these pieces originally were listed in the collection as only ‘Eskimo,’ which while not incorrect for these culture groups (Yup’ik and Inupiat), doesn’t tell enough of the story,” she said. “It took some digging, and collaboration with Alaska Native community members and artists, to decipher the truth behind the works. Many of these pieces have been kept locked up for more than 60 years. To have the opportunity to research their history and form, and bring them to light even in a small way, humbles me deeply.” “Land, Sea and Spirit: Alaska Native Art from the 19th and 20th Centuries” is on display at the McClung Museum through October 19.

The Election Distraction I

’M FREQUENTLY ASKED by

other small business owners whether I believe that presidential elections impact the economy. The plain and simple truth is that I don’t know. In my 66 years, every presidential election that I have witnessed has been showcased as the election upon which the fate of the nation rests. It sort of reminds me of SEC football, where sports analysts convince fans that next weekend’s games are even more pivotal than last weekend’s games. You know… the ones that they convinced us then were the very games upon which the entire season depended. There’s no question that the upcoming elections are important, particularly when you consider that the new president will set the tone for our nation for the next four to eight years. While much is at stake, I don’t believe elections rise to the level of doom and gloom portrayed by a media fighting for market share and increased advertising revenues.

If you’re a political junkie, why not re-channel some of that energy to your own election? You know… the election that you participate in daily, where your customers (the voters) decide to select you or your competition (the candidates) with which to do business. After this election season has ended, which can’t be soon enough for most of us, rest assured that politicians and their pundits and a willing media will begin the

Business

seemingly never ending political cycle all over again as they begin to handicap the 2018 congressional elections, which of course will be characterized as the most important election in our nation’s – and the world’s – history. But until this matchup between The Donald and Hillary draws to its final conclusion, you still have a business to run. If you’re a political junkie, why not re-channel some of that energy to your own election? You know… the election that you participate in daily, where your customers (the voters) decide to select you or your competition (the candidates) with which to do business. Trust me, it’s more financially rewarding. Be a patriot. Vote for the best candidate, and then go out and win your own election.

Tips to Keep Small Businesses Up and Running During a Move

S

MALL BUSINESSES relocate

for many reasons. Business may be booming and you need a bigger facility to keep up. Perhaps you added staff and everyone’s tired of being elbow-to-elbow in your current office. Whatever the reason, some simple steps can make the process as easy and cost-effective as possible. Here is some advice for small businesses that are about to relocate: » Create a plan to help minimize the inevitable disruption of moving. Meet with key team members and make lists. Outline what has to be organized, coordinated, and physically moved. Your plan should include a timeline and schedule for your move. Detail every aspect and when it should happen. » If you’re a one- or two-person show, you may be able to accomplish your move on your own, doing all your own packing and renting a moving truck. However, for multi-person offices, it may be best to leave moving to the pros. When getting quotes, have the moving company come to your site to review your operation to ensure the quote is as accurate as possible. Shop multiple companies that specialize in moving small businesses, read

their online reviews, and check their insurance coverage. » Even if you’re having your business professionally moved, some items you’ll want to transport on your own. Stock up on moving necessities like packing tape, boxes, paper, and bubble roll. Remember different items will require different sizes and styles of boxes. For example, fragile or heavy items will require reinforced boxes, while bankers’ boxes are ideal for file folders. » Plan where everything will go in your new location before you get there. Don’t wait until your operation is on-site; begin organizing right away. » Stay productive by scheduling your move during off hours or days. Put critical documents and data on a cloud service so you can access them while computers are in transit. Let everyone know when and where you’ll be moving by sending out announcement cards to clients and customers prior to the move. » Moving is an opportunity to de-clutter, saving time and money because the less you have to move the lower the costs of moving.

Moving also is an opportunity to innovate or upgrade. You might decide to replace old, uncomfortable office chairs. It may turn out to be cheaper to buy new desks and have them delivered than to move the old ones that have seen better days. » Once you’re set up in your new location, let everyone know where you’ve landed. Update your online profiles, including your company’s Facebook page, your personal LinkedIn account, your company blog and website, and all your social media accounts. Update all your marketing materials like letterhead, brochures, signage, and change of address cards. Moving doesn’t have to interrupt your small business operations. With some planning and help from resources, you can make your small business move easy and smooth. September 2016 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

Family Life

When a Family Pet Dies

THE LOSS

of a pet can be one of the most difficult things for a family to manage. For many of us, our pets are considered a member of our families, and they are a consistent part of our day-to-day lives. We share free time, homes, meals, and many of us even share our beds with our pets. Pets lavish us with love when everything in the world seems to be going wrong. They give us unconditional love, and the bond between humans and pets can be very strong. If your family’s beloved pet has died, nothing will completely take away the pain. When a family loses a pet, grieving will occur. Yet every member of the family will experience the loss differently. The key to coping and processing a pet’s death is to allow everyone to experience their own emotions about the loss and to not judge them. For instance, some family members may feel guilty when a pet dies, especially if they

did not suspect the pet was ill. They may beat up on themselves thinking they should have kept a closer eye on the pet. Another family member may feel guilty or even a bit traumatized if they gave the vet permission to put an extremely ill or injured pet to sleep. It’s also common for people in the home to feel guilty when they think of things they could have or should have done for their pet but didn’t. If you or someone in your family is feeling guilty, it is best to not hold the feelings inside. Crying and expressing guilt, and the many other feelings that grief invokes, is an important part of the healing process. When Pets Grieve It isn’t just the humans in the home who grieve the loss of a family pet. If you have other pets in your home, make sure you pay extra special attention to them. Anyone who is close to animals understands that pets grieve, too. Not only will your surviving pets be feeling the loss of their furry playmate, but

they may also be greatly unsettled by seeing their human family so upset. Snuggling and playing with your remaining pets can help all of you deal with the loss of your mutual friend and companion. Ceremonies When a family pet dies, it is very important that it is acknowledged as a great family loss. This aids in the grieving process, no matter the age of the family member. You should try to come up with something that will give your family a sense of ceremony and closure. Many pet owners do this by choosing to have a small burial and ceremony at home. Others may make a pet memorial for their furry family member online. Small children can draw pictures of their pets. Wendy Faulkner is a freelance writer based in Blount County, Tennessee. Are You Guilty of This Ugly Thing? DID YOU KNOW

that it is possible to never speak unkindly about others? It really is. It’s difficult, but possible. I’ve spoken about this before; however, this is one of those topics that we can never speak of enough. Here’s the etiquette rule. If what you’re about to say to someone regarding someone else is going to cause the person you’re speaking with to think “less” about who you’re speaking about, it should not be said. Period. It is completely irrelevant whether or not you are sharing truth or falsehoods. You simply should not share information about others that you haven’t been given permission to share or that shines poorly on those you’re speaking of. Let me give you a good analogy. Imagine that you have a spotlight and you are the

66

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE September 2016

director of where the spotlight shines. Gossiping or sharing unkind remarks about someone is like taking your spotlight and shining it on the mistake (past or present), or the weakness, or the imperfection of the one you are speaking about. What you’re really doing during this behavior is trying to tell the world, “I would never do such a thing as him or her. I am too good.” Can you think of anything uglier? It’s true that you may not ever do the thing you are sharing about someone else, but I guarantee you that we all have our own stack of “things” that we do that perhaps the one we are speaking of would never do. We all have our own ugly stacks. Surely we can think of other more productive ways to help us feel better about

ourselves. Surely we hope that others will forget our mistakes, past decisions, and weaknesses and focus on who we are today. We want this for ourselves, yet sometimes we struggle to give those around us this same consideration. Parents, it is our duty to not only teach this principle of a true lady and gentleman, but it is our obligation to be great examples to our children. Hopefully they do not have to overhear us speaking unkindly of others, ever. Something I can improve on as well.

more than one million practitioners in United S t a t e s ca n l e g a l l y p e r f o r m aesthetic injections such as Botox and Juvederm? It seems that just about every medspa, doctor’s office, dental office, and even massage studio offers these injections. Advertisements for these services in local magazines, radio advertisements, and mass mailings are also pervasive. Unfortunately, the aesthetics industry is poorly regulated, and many establishments that offer these services have little to no direct oversight by an experienced physician. As a result, patients may experience poor outcomes and are often confused about where to go. Dermatologists, plastic surgeons, and ENT facial plastic surgeons have aesthetics at the core of their training. Detailed knowledge of the intricacies of facial anatomy is necessary to provide superior outcomes and lessen the chances of potentially dangerous complications. This type of knowledge is learned through specialized residency training and honed through years of clinical experience. Training with top physician injectors in the world and regularly participating in physician led workshops and training courses helps to keep an injector up to date on the most advanced aesthetic techniques. Dermatologists are also the experts in diagnosing and treating skin conditions that may also be adversely affecting one’s appearance. As a board certified dermatologist with more than 15 years of experience in the aesthetic field, I feel duty bound to educate my patients. I encourage them to move beyond looking at aesthetic injections as a commodity. In other words, not how

much it costs for a unit of Botox or a vial of Juvederm. We shouldn’t be chasing lines or wrinkles. Instead, we should be seeking an individualized global improvement in one’s appearance employing all of the available treatments and advanced techniques. While there are many reputable aesthetic injectors in town, at Southeastern Dermatology, I personally perform all of the aesthetic injections. Whether you have been disappointed by previous outcomes or are just interested in learning more about aesthetic procedures, I invite you to experience firsthand the difference this kind of training and expertise makes.
