ecause we’re spending more time around the house nowadays, many Americans are learning to fully appreciate their homes. Our kitchens are once again a favorite family gathering place where we share our daily experiences. Our family rooms provide a much needed diversion from the world with gaming and new feature movies and old classics streaming on our widescreen televisions. And our beautifully landscaped patios and gardens offer the peace and tranquility that often alludes us with our hectic career and family schedules. But despite these wonderful features of our homes that we are coming to enjoy more, you no doubt have become increasingly more focused on certain areas of your home that might have become a source of growing frustration for you. Are you going on a hunt to get dressed each morning? Does your car even fit in the garage? Do the doors stay closed in the laundry and pantry because the spaces just don’t work? How can one family have accumulated so much “STUFF” you ask yourself? Well, the solution to your “STUFF” issues may be easier than you might expect: Closets by McKenry.

For nearly two decades, Closets by McKenry owner and founder, Chris McKenry, has helped homeowners from L.A. to Knoxville overcome their storage and organizational problems. And, more recently, Chris has been helping a growing number of professionals transition from their conventional office places to their new at-home offices that enable busy professionals like yourself to remain both productive and efficient. Closets by McKenry is locally owned and independently operated and is not a franchise. Chris and his team remain nimble enough to respond to all the latest developments in the storage and organizational marketplace and yet large enough to source these innovative products from around the world. And because of the industry relationships that Chris developed since 2000, Closets by McKenry is able to source everything you’ll need to create the perfect storage and organizational solutions for your home’s closets, garage, pantry, laundry, and home storage needs… and all at the best prices. Closets by McKenry uses the latest ClosetPro 3D software, a cloud-based system

that allows your projects to be designed and visualized in your own home. They are also very proud to support their local and area business economy by being the exclusive Knoxville distributor for Sevierville-based Inspiration Home Closet Systems. Chris firmly believes that bringing order and organization to our surroundings can enhance our lives and reduce stress. He describes the number one mistake people make in their closets and storage spaces: “Not taking an extra minute to plan and think of their needs. It is not JUST a

closet, or garage, or laundry. It is the place that affects your entire day.” Chris always asks many questions to make sure everything that needs a place has a place, and he loves bringing a smile to a client’s face. “You have many choices when selecting a closet and storage company,” said Chris. “But what really successfully differentiates Closets by McKenry in the minds of our customers is our love in taking care of them and going that extra mile.” Continued on page 2A ...

Correction to WATeR’s article in the September edition of Mountain Views The article titled Are the Fish Safe to Eat in the Lake? which appeared in the September edition of East Tennessee’s Mountain Views had a correction to a quote made by Mr. Waldrop. The quote from Mr. Waldrop that was submitted in the article sent to us by the Chair of the Communications/Publicity Committee was: The only pathway of concern issued by any environmental agency is by eating catfish from the lake every day of every month for 70 years. Mr. Waldrop’s text and the correct statement is: The only pathway of concern issued by any environmental agency is by eating catfish from the lake every month for 70 years.

Monroe County Animal Shelter Pets of the Month

T

he shelter has many wonderful indoor cats who are ready for adoption, including all colors, ages, and sizes. Let’s start with Jack, who is a staff and volunteer favorite. He is a tabby weighing in at about 18 pounds. He is a bundle of purrs and cuddles. We have many other adult cats: Mama Chin (Black and White), Devlin (White and Black), Romeo (Solid Black), Roxie (Tortie), Stripe, Ruff, Ready, and Orangeade (a very sweet kitty that actively seeks human interaction and loves chin stitches and head scratches), and there are many kittens: Donny, Mickey, Merlin, Marble, and Tic, to name a few. The greatest thing about adopting from the shelter is that you are saving the life of a stray or surrendered cat that really needs a good indoor home, and they are ALL fully vetted for a very small fee. Some benefits of having a pet cat are they are great companions, they are excellent listeners and never judge, and their purr is soothing and helps healing. Children raised with cats become more responsible and healthier adults, and the number one benefit is that cats are fun, and you don’t have to walk them in the rain and cold! Kiya is a 3-year-old female Shepherd/husky mix and is looking for her “fur-ever” home - but one without chickens, as she doesn’t like them. Bella is a 6-year-old female Lab mix and weighs 41 pounds. Bella is looking for a home where she has a constant companion. Many things in this world scare this sweet girl, and she has a hard time coping, especially when thunderstorms come in or other stressful situations. The perfect home would be a quiet one that is looking for a companion dog and not leave Bella alone. If your dog is like Bella and uncomfortable around loud noises, there are several things you can do to help her: » First, give her a sense of safety. If you’re out and about and she starts shaking, whining, or pacing, leave as soon as possible. If you’re home, take her to the place where she usually goes for comfort or sleep. It should NOT be a punishment place. » Next thing is to distract her. Play music or turn on the TV. Engage her in a game of tug or fetch. If she

appears uninterested, don’t continue. You don’t want her to associate fun games with her fear of the noise. » There are several medications and treats on the market that help pets stay calm during stressful times. A “thunder shirt/jacket” is also on the market. It is a tight shirt that helps the dog calm herself. Introduce your dog to the thunder shirt BEFORE a storm or event happens so she can become comfortable with it. There are even earmuffs for your dog! And, of course, ask your vet for guidance. Unlike us, our pets have no way of knowing when our at-home sheltering might be coming to an end. Before pet owners resume normal back at work schedules, we need to help our pets get ready for the transition. Here are some tips from the American Veterinary Medical Association to help prepare your pets. » Slowly introduce workday routines. Schedule waking up, feeding, and walking as you would for your expected workday routine. » Introduce a consistent departure schedule that builds on that routine. Take anxiety out of your departure practice short departures on a daily basis, and gradually extend the time you are gone. » Give a small treat just as you walk out the door to condition your pet to find it rewarding for you to leave. If signs of anxiety occur - such as destructive activity don’t punish your pet. Instead, shorten the time away and slowly build up to longer periods. » Exercise: Before leaving, engage in rigorous play or physical activity. Burning energy can help keep pets calm and relaxed for longer periods while you’re gone. » Keep them engaged. Long-lasting treats, food puzzles, and automatic feeders can help keep pets occupied throughout the day. » Create a safe space. If you typically used a crate while you were gone during the day but have stopped while at home, now is a good time to either explore discontinuing the crate (gradually increasing the length of time you’re away) or reintroduce crating while still working from home. Do this by making it rewarding for your dog to go into the crate for short periods.

The Public Library at Tellico Village Hosts Mini Book Sale October 17th

D

uring this period of COVID-19 social distancing, the tented courtyard at the Tellico Village Public Library has become the venue for a series of mini book sales. Major fundraisers were canceled, prompting the library’s Friends group to invite its patrons and members of the surrounding community to outdoor mini sales. Two previous mini sales, Mystery Madness and Stranger Than Fiction, have been successful for both the visitors who were able to purchase items for $1-$3 and for the library. The next mini sale will be held on Saturday, October 17, from 9 am to noon in the tented courtyard. The featured genres will include sports, history, government & politics, and books about Tennessee, along with others. Most items will sell for $1 or $3, cash or check only. Visitors are required to wear face masks, and social distancing will be observed. For more information, call 865-4585199 or visit www.TVLibrary.org.

» Turn on background noise. Leave on a TV, radio, or sound machine to provide some company while you’re away. We are out of treats for dogs at the Monroe County Animal Shelter! Our wonderful dog walkers use treats for the dogs to coax them to walk or do basic commands. If you can purchase a few packages of “cookies” for dogs and bring them to our shelter, our pups would greatly appreciate it. All pet animals adopted from the shelter are spayed or neutered, wormed, have age appropriate vaccinations and testing, and are microchipped with registration. Cats are litter box trained. The adoption fees are $50 over 1 year old and $60 under 1 year old. Approximate costs if you had to pay for all of these services would be about $300-$400. Each adoption also makes room in the shelter for another animal to come in and have the opportunity to get adopted. The Monroe County Animal Shelter is located at 170 Kefauver Lane in Madisonville (behind Walmart) and is open Tuesday through Friday from 11 am to 4:30 pm and Saturday from 11 am to 2 pm. The shelter is closed to the public on Sunday and Monday. Call 423-442-1015 to confirm the shelter’s hours due to COVID-19. Call or email animal. shelter@monroetn.com for more information and to schedule a meet & greet with a pet. Check out all available pets on our website, www.monroecountyfriendsofanimals.org, or the official Facebook page, TN Monroe County Animal Shelter. The shelter has had a few personnel turnovers and is in desperate need of volunteers to walk the dogs and assist with other shelter needs. If you are interested, please email animal.shelter@monroetn.com or call the shelter at 423-442-1015, and they will put you in touch with Cathy Barrett, Foster Coordinator. Due to an increase in the COVID-19 virus problems, the Thrift Store will be closed for the foreseeable future, but the MCFA Thrift Store is presently selling furniture and other items via their Facebook page: Thrift Store of MCFA. Please check often to see postings off/on during the day. GREAT deals... cash only. Someone would meet you at the store for you to pick up your new furniture, including cribs, sofas, tables, desks, cabinets, dining room sets, TVs, etc.

Zoo Knoxville Anticipating Giraffe Birth in December

Z

oo Knoxville is preparing for the birth of a giraffe calf in December. This will be the second calf born to five-year-old Frances and 18-year-old Jumbe (pronounced JOOM-bay). The projected due date is December 17. Zoo Knoxville is part of a collaborative network of zoos accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) throughout the U.S. working to save giraffes from extinction. Poaching and habitat destruction have devastated wild populations. During the last three decades, giraffe populations have decreased by 40%, with the animals now locally extinct in seven African countries. Giraffe are now considered vulnerable to extinction. “The birth of an endangered animal always inspires hope, perhaps even more so in 2020,” said Phil Colclough, Director of Animal Care, Conservation, and Education. “This baby is critical to maintaining a healthy and viable population for the future, and that’s one of the most important jobs we have as a modern zoo. Our guests can also be champions for giraffe conservation by visiting us and helping us care for our herd.” Zoo Knoxville is home to four giraffes: Females Bea, Francis, and Lucille and male Jumbe. You can go behind the scenes with the giraffe team and learn how they care for the herd on the zoo’s new original series, “The Wild Life,” streaming online at www.watchthewildife.com. T

he year 2020 will be remembered for a number of reasons. Some will remember it because of COVID-19, but others will remember it because of the impact it had on local small businesses. As a small business that has proudly served the Greater Tellico Village community since 1988, The Village Salon has faced some very challenging times during 2020, as

have most small businesses in the area. It all started when small businesses in Tennessee were asked to close for 15 days in an effort to ‘flatten the curve’. Those 15 days turned into a 44 day forced closure that created potentially catastrophic impacts on small businesses in our area. Thankfully, we Brian K. Whitehead were positioned to survive, Managing Partner but surviving the shutdown The Village Salon is only the beginning of the Survival Mode. Hair salons, nail salons, The Village Salon 222 Village Square and medical spas have been in Tellico Village Offering The Latest Colore Styling Techniques particularly impacted because 865-458-9332 of the nature of services we thevillagesalon@aol.com provide. Businesses that operate under the ‘close contact’ guidelines often find themselves essentially with one hand tied behind their back when it comes to operating for profit. Restrictions that reduce volume as well as operating efficiency continue to hinder close contact businesses even as we approach October. The American spirit will ultimately prevail, as business owners learn how to operate in the current environment, 222 Village Square • Tellico Village and their customers learn to do the same. Yes, our operational procedures have become exhausting, but we Salon Hours: are truly thankful to be safely serving our guests. Update on CHEO (Complementary Health Education Organization)

Your Pathway to Well-Being

HEO misses you, and we have not forgotten you. Unfortunately, we have been unable to schedule any programs, as our meeting places have not opened up or are too small to accommodate our group based on the COVID restrictions. We have speakers ready to present as soon as we are able to meet safely. At this time, we have placed a hold on joining or renewing memberships. We will be extending membership

renewal dates or extending memberships for those who have renewed during this time of social distancing due to the COVID virus. We will update you with the specifics at a later time. CHEO does not have any programs scheduled currently. Please visit our website for updates. When our programs begin again, we will send an email to the email addresses we have on file.

Just a reminder that CHEO has moved away from the Club Express website and is now live on a new server. The new CHEO website has a better, more keyword searchable member directory, as well as the availability to search by location and by categories. Check it out at www.cheoknox.org. production. Alongside that, 26 million plastic bottles are made each year, equaling 30 million tons of plastic that ultimately end up in landfills. In the U.S. alone, it takes 15 million barrels of oil annually to meet the demands of bottled water consumption. That’s enough to fuel 100,000 cars for a year! Third, marine life can be affected by plastic bottled water. Many landfills are located near an ocean, and the microplastics can make their way into the water during decomposition. Sea turtles and other marine life can mistake the microplastics for their main food source, jellyfish, and digest the plastic, which can result in injury or death. Fourth, 90% of the cost of bottled water is the packaging, not the water quality. Paying a premium for low quality doesn’t quite add up in our book. The labels on your bottled water state “filtered by reverse osmosis.” Aqua Clear Water Systems (ACWS) uses the same process, reverse osmosis, to filter your tap water, but for a lower cost annually. ACWS offers many reverse osmosis drinking water

systems and also provides complete whole home systems. In addition to your clothes lasting longer, your coffee and tea tasting better, and your hair and skin becoming healthier, owning a professional water system is like having a bottled water factory in your home. Upgrading your water is the quickest way to protect your two biggest investments: YOU and your home. It costs $0 to learn how to improve your water, and we hope we can help you get “off the bottle” by becoming a part of the ACWS family. For the readers of East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, we are offering a special, limited-time offer. You’ll receive the exclusive designer faucet in the color of your choice for no additional investment. ($195 value. Expires November 1, 2020.) The Surprising Sins of Bottled Water

By David Brewster, Owner of Aqua Clear Water Systems, LLC

M

illions of Americans buy bottled water, and the reasoning is usually about convenience or about how the water from their faucet doesn’t taste great or carries an odor. Bottled water seemingly fixes these drinking water issues, but does it? Let’s discuss some of the problems with bottled water. First, a gallon of water is 2,000 times more expensive than tap water. A case of 24 (16.9 oz) bottles of water is $5, making each ounce of water $0.01. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, you should drink around 100 ounces per day. Multiply $0.01 x 100 ounces and it equals $1 per day, or $365 spent on bottled water per adult per year. A family of four would spend around $1,460 per year on bottled water. Second, bottled water contributes to environmental problems directly related to plastic waste. Plastic bottles are typically petroleum based; they release harmful toxins into the air, like nickel, benzene, and more, during

Re-formation Again

10A • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, October, 2020

T

he month of October marks the anniversary of a date five hundred and three years ago, when Martin Luther posted his Ninety-Five Thesis (propositions) on the door of a church in Wittenburg, Germany, heralding in huge changes in the Christian Church – a Reformation. It must have been very difficult in those long ago times to accept a shift in “the way it’s always been.” Today churches are facing another reformation of sorts. In the time of COVID-19, churches and other institutions are having to re-form how they gather for worship when they cannot worship together as a body in person. Online worship has become the norm for both large and small congregations. It has been a special challenge for the smaller congregations who have only traditionally worshipped in person and have little or no training in the technology necessary to bring their church families together on a computer screen. Many of their members are of an older generation and have little or no computer skills to begin to find their church services in the world of technology. Accepting that this is actually worship is hard when you don’t get dressed and drive to your worship space and physically sit, stand and sing with your fellow worshippers. After a couple of weeks, we all caught up and accepted the novelty of the situation. Telephone trees and Zoom gatherings kept us in touch with one another in a world without physical contact. Shepherd of the Lake sent out a contact sheet with the photographic images of all of our members so that we could keep our church family very much together as we worshipped alone at home. Over time, the novelty wears off, so where are we now as worshipping congregations? Do we still have the enthusiasm we had a couple of months ago? Is it still weird to be worshipping in front of a computer or television screen in our pajamas, or has that become the norm? Some churches have begun to re-open their doors, following the restrictions placed on them by their state regulations. Are people flocking back to these very different worship spaces? Some are not, still concerned about health and safety, others are giving it a try and are the pioneers, opening their minds to the new church of social separation. It’s causing us to all think about what is church, really. Is it a building? Is it a social gathering? Or are we the church, going forth to be the light of the world? Good Shepherd Buys Van During Fundraiser Campaign

T

he Good Shepherd Center’s existing annual fundraiser efforts helped generate specific designated funds to assist in paying for a new van. Replacing the existing van was one of the three main objectives of this year’s campaign. The ongoing the fundraiser program is continuing to generate funding for the purchase of food items and building maintenance. The van is used to pick up vegetables/fruits and other food supplies from local suppliers such as Walmart, Little

Caesar’s, Tellico Community Market, Bargain Barn, and various food drives. The current van was a 1994 Dodge Ram with 167,000 miles with various body and engine issues. With the assistance of Jacky Jones Ford, the Good Shepherd Center purchased a 2019 Ford Transit 250 long wheelbase with only 39,000 miles along with A/C. “The additional inside space will be valuable in reducing ‘second trips’ and will allow us at times to pick up larger deliveries,” said Tina Smith, Executive Director of the Good Shepherd Center. In addition to the walk-in freezer, during the past year, a new walk-in cooler was installed at the Center to increase the level of service and availability of food as well. Demand at the Center has increased with many new families needing assistance due to the current COVID-19 crisis. Currently the Center serves an average of 1,500 people per month and distributes approximately 50 boxes of food per day or 30,000 lbs. of food per month at no charge. With the increasing need, the success of the fundraiser is critical. Funds will be used for purchase of food, for replacement of the van used to pick up food donations, and for building repairs. People can make a one-time donation or a pledge over time: Monthly, quarterly, or semi-annually. Any level of donation would be appreciated. Contributions are

A Walk on the Wild Side – The Return of Animal Print E

Fashion Sense

very few seasons, animal print makes a resurgence. The patterns nature has bestowed on zebras, leopards and snakes have always made an impression on fashion designers – and now they’re again accessible and wearable. The prints we’ve seen before seem to play an even bigger role this season. Not only is there the quintessential leopard print, but also a cow, cheetah and giraffe! When you feel like showing your wild side, nothing speaks like a sexy animal print. However, there are a few things to consider when choosing the right one for you. Scale animal prints to your size. Smaller prints like cheetah and leopard look great on most everyone. Larger scale prints like cow and giraffe have a lot of white space in them and are more difficult to wear. Pair animal prints with neutrals (black, brown, grey and off-white) or play off of equally bold colors (leopard with hot pink or zebra with lime). If an entire piece isn’t for you, try a jacket or coat with an animal print lining, or just carry an animal print purse. The return of animal prints is a major style statement this fall. It’s a fashion favorite – call it tried and true – that’s always dependable. Leopard spots are the most important of all the big cats, but watch for tigers to roar in as well. Exotic skins like python, crocodile and lizard emerge as rich dimensional texture on leather or as a print on suede materials. If you’ve always been wild about animal prints, shopping our fall collections will be fun for you this season. From shoes to jackets to jewelry, and everything in between, animal prints are an essential for fall 2020!

At Dental Arts of Tellico Village, You’re Treated Like Family

“F

amily dentistry has always been part of my life,” said Dr. Angela Burns. “I became inspired to enter the dental profession after observing my father, who launched his own dental career 55 years ago. It became a life’s calling. I always admired the personal level of care he provided. He absolutely loves interacting with his patients and Dr. Angela Burns associates, and like me, he feels truly fulfilled when he’s serving others.” Dr. Angie graduated from the University of Tennessee Memphis College of Dentistry in 1996 and went on to complete her residency at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. Dr. Angie’s father opened Dental Arts of Tellico Village in 1996. “Our entire team is focused on helping you and your family members to achieve the optimal dental health and

oral hygiene. That’s why we continue to invest in training, education and the latest and most advanced technology designed for the early detection and, in many instances, the prevention of potential dental diseases.” Dental Arts of Tellico Village offers a wide variety of restorative and cosmetic dental services designed to restore full function and optimal dental health. Are Your Home’s Oriental & Area Rugs Holiday Season Fresh? Our Farragut-based Oriental and area rug cleaning boutique uses a proprietary 11-step washing process that will safely clean all of your rugs, including those that are be destined to become family heirlooms.

By Kerry McDuffie, Owner of Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning

C

an you believe it? Thanksgiving is just a few short weeks away. Remember last holiday season? Remember the pre-holiday to-do list? Remember trying to complete that to-do list in just a few days? Remember wishing the holidays were over? Today is a great time to begin planning for this season’s holiday events. As a father and grandfather, I know how important this time of the year can be for families but also how stressful. At Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning, we’ve been helping busy families prepare for busy holiday seasons since 1985. Are your home’s Oriental and area rugs on your

cleaning to-do list? Why not enhance the appearance of every room in your home while providing a clean and healthy surface for your children and grandchildren to play on by cleaning your Oriental and area rugs? There’s also a practical side. Clean Oriental rugs will not only look better longer, but they’ll also last longer. Abrasives, dirt, and other contaminants tracked into our homes and onto our rugs not only make them look dull and dingy, but can also permanently damage your rugs fibers. And the snow and ice removal chemicals that were tracked into your home over the course of last winter can chemically bond to rug fibers, significantly reducing their life expectancy. Our Farragut-based Oriental and area rug cleaning boutique uses a proprietary 11-step washing process that

will safely clean all of your rugs, including those that are be destined to become family heirlooms. We have also recently made significant investments in even newer technology to ensure that we can continue to offer you the very best Oriental and area rug washing services available anywhere in East Tennessee. So if you can use a little help preparing for the holiday season this year – and who couldn’t – remember the company who has earned a superior reputation for unmatched superior cleaning: Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning. Stu Cook and Cosmo Clifford Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Cosmo’s Factory

“T

raveling Band.” “Lookin’ Out My Back Door.” “Run Through the Jungle.” “Up Around the Bend.” “I Heard It Through the Grapevine.” “Long As I Can See the Light.” These are all phenomenal songs that baby boomers (and even boomer wannabes) have enjoyed for many, many years. How many years? Well, you might find it hard to believe that Cosmo’s Factory (the album all those magnificent hits were on) is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Because of that, I reached out to Creedence Clearwater Revival co-founders, Stu Cook (bassist for Creedence) and Cosmo Clifford (drummer for Creedence), to talk about the album. The conversations took place separately via video calls. Stu called me from his home in Honduras, and Cosmo called me from his home in California. I asked Stu why he thinks that monumental album still resonates with people after 50 years. “I have no idea,” said Stu. “I think that the album was probably the peak of the band’s success. The band did two more studio albums after Cosmo’s Factory, but I think that it just all came together at the time and made it to number one, and it’s hard for me to... I can’t explain it. I look at all the albums about the same. I wouldn’t say this is my favorite album. It has some of my favorite songs on it, but I just sort of lump them all together. Not to knock success... I mean, it’s hard for me to sit and say, ‘Well, that wasn’t good,’ because they were incredibly successful records. But for me, Bayou Country is the one that has the richest sound.”

Cosmo answered the same question by sharing, “That’s our Sergeant Pepper, if you will. It’s kind of a greatest hits album with a lot of cover tunes. There were three single releases from the album, but there are six singles. They were double-sided hits. John Fogerty’s theory on all of this was that if we’re ever off the charts, we’ll be forgotten about. We were the only ones that thought that way but because everybody else, all of our peers - Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, all those other people that we were competing against for radio time back in the day - would do their album and go on an extended tour. So they were off the charts, but no one forgot about them. That was the deal. “The first single released from Cosmo’s Factory was ‘Traveling Band’ and ‘Who’ll Stop the Rain’ - both doublesided hits. And the album - this was January of 1970 - wasn’t released until July of 1970. There’s another album release in between that. In April, we put out ‘Up Around the Bend’ and ‘Run Through the Jungle’. Back then the unspoken rule about singles was don’t put a single out in front of your album because it’ll take away from album sales. Well, so much for that theory, because that album sold four million copies, and that’s a lot for not being a Greatest Hits album, even though in some ways, it was a Greatest Hits album. There were, as I said, the six singles, so we’re burning at twice the speed when we put out a single. We were putting out three albums in ‘69, so we just really were what I call the ‘roman candle’ of rock and roll. Then, when the album

was released in July, the singles were ‘As Long As I Can See the Light’ and ‘Looking Out My Back Door’.” As for how the album got its name, Cosmo said, “John Fogerty told me that they were gonna name it after me because I have no problem talking to the press guys. I like to joke around with them, and I like to tell stories. I’ve always done that. I’ve always been the emcee at the school assemblies, whereas John was very introverted and shy. He said that he knew they were going to be all over him with the release of this album, so he threw my name in there so that was the bait for the press - to get those guys going. I was making it up, and I had a lot of fun and it worked.” The videos of the calls with both Stu Cook and Cosmo Clifford can be viewed in their entirety on www. boomerocity.com. You can also enjoy a trip down memory lane by ordering your copy of Cosmo’s Factory on the very same page.

Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirtysix years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

Combining the Latest Medical Innovations With Compassionate Health and Senior Care

By Scott Gallian, MD Co-Founder – Gallian Medical Group

L

ike so many of you, I have had decades of experiences with our nation’s ever evolving healthcare system as it struggles to reinvent itself over and over again to meet the growing needs of our aging population. As a patient, I have experienced healthcare as a youngster and adolescent, as a member of the United States Air Force and as a physician. My experience as a physician, however, has been the most enlightening. I experienced medicine early on, like so many other new physicians, as a member of a corporate healthcare system. It bore little resemblance to what I remember as a child or adolescent. It was somewhat reminiscent of my experience with the military healthcare system, which understandably is intended to meet the needs of large numbers of service members as quickly and as efficiently as possible, in as little time as possible. It might best have been described as a sort of medical assembly line. It was disappointing as I began to observe many of these same “assembly line” practices becoming commonplace in our corporate healthcare system. I was given a quota of patients I was expected to see on a daily basis. When it was necessary to refer a patient to a specialist, we were expected to refer only those specialists working within our same medical group. And I observed patients scrambling to find a new provider when their physician’s employment contract was not renewed or when an insurance company’s medical coverage was no longer accepted. After years of “corporate medicine,” both my wife, Family Nurse Practioner, Lauren Gallian, FNC-BC, and I decided to launch Gallian Medical Group in nearby Hardin Valley. At Gallian, we are totally focused on you, the patient. You’ll also discover a family friendly, unrushed atmosphere where you’re not treated as a number. You’ll not experience a “Greyhound Bus Terminal” type waiting area or “steeplechase” medical experience designed to compress you into your designated time block. All backed up by a state-of-the-art, and recently expanded, medical facility, and staffed by compassionate and caring healthcare professionals, Gallian Medical Group offers it’s patients a level of health and senior care that you may have thought no longer existed. Your next visit to the doctor doesn’t have to be like a trip to the DMV. Rediscover a new and refreshing level of health and senior care at Gallian Medical Group. Visit us online or call to learn about our virtual appointments.

Why Not Treat Your Boat Like Your Car?

By Patrick Boring, Certified Touchless Boat Cover Manager, Lifetime Docks, LLC stablished in 1997, Lifetime Docks, LLC has earned a reputation for superior craftsmanship, honesty, and integrity. Our expertise is why in August 2018, the Touchless Boat Cover company selected Lifetime Docks to become their exclusive representative for the sale, design, installation, and maintenance of their revolutionary and patented Touchless Boat Cover systems. Imagine a season on the water without the headache of having to clean your boat nearly every time you take your boat out. Instead, imagine pressing the button on your wireless key fob and stepping onto your watercraft and out onto the lake for a day of family fun in the sun. Say goodbye forever to boat cover snaps, straps and bungee cords, and bugs. Benefits to the Touchless Boat Cover: » Allows you to cover/uncover your boat in 30 seconds with a wireless key fob. » Saves you many hours of cleaning/waxing each season. » Protects the interior AND exterior of your boat from damaging UV rays and the elements, unlike a traditional snap-on cover. » Boaters say that they actually use their boats more often. Boaters often will pass on a 30 minute boat ride rather than spending 20 minutes to remove their traditional boat cover and 20 minutes to replace it.

E

» Your investment made in the Touchless Cover comes back to you in a much higher resale value when you sell or trade in your boat in the future because it will still look showroom new. » You can select from 10 custom fabric colors. » Saves you $1,000s in boat detailing and re-gelcoating costs. » 5-year warranty protection. To underscore our commitment to our customers, Lifetime Docks, LLC has named me their Touchless Boat Cover Manager. My sole responsibility, and that of our dedicated team of certified technicians at Lifetime Docks, is the sale, installation, and maintenance of our Touchless Boat Covers. You protect your investment in your automobiles, so why not your boat? Like a garage on the water, I invite you to discover just how affordable your very own Touchless Boat Cover system can be. Call me today to set up your no-cost, no-obligation consultation. Enjoy a season of family memories on the water and not on the dock cleaning your boat. A Financial Wellness Second Opinion? Why Not? L

By Yvonne Marsh, CFP®, CPA

ife changes quickly. The markets can drop 30% in a few weeks, as they did in March, and suddenly your secure retirement doesn’t feel so secure anymore. Or one of your longtime friends and clients can contract COVID-19 and pass away very quickly, with no time to say good-bye, as happened to me in August. My point is this: You cannot wait until tomorrow because there is no time tomorrow – whether in your investments or in your life. You have to take action today to protect yourself and your loved ones that depend upon you. Let’s start with your investment portfolio. Did it perform the way you thought it would through the March correction? And are you confident it will stand up to the next correction? We are heading into an increasingly uncertain 4th quarter with the effects of a global pandemic, sky-high unemployment, and a divisive election season. Continued volatility in the stock market seems inevitable. Here are five concepts you should know and understand about your investment strategy:

How much risk did your portfolio take to get the return that you earned? This is measured by a calculated standard deviation and Sharpe ratio. Are you diversified across stock and bond markets and not overly concentrated in any one stock sector? This should match your personal risk tolerance. What fees are you paying to your advisor, or are there hidden fees you don’t know about? Fiduciaries and broker/dealers are compensated differently. Are your mutual funds’ expense ratios consistent with the returns it delivers? The expense ratio is how much of the funds’ earnings does the fund retain for itself to cover expenses. If you are retired, is your portfolio designed to withstand sequence of returns investment risk? (Google: “blackrock sequence of returns pdf” if you’re unfamiliar with this concept.) Just as a health scare might have you seeking out a second medical opinion, a financial scare should prompt you to get a second financial opinion. If you’re not comfortable asking your advisor these questions, let us provide you a complimentary, unbiased analysis of your portfolio using third-party software that compiles data from Morningstar, a trusted independent source of investment research and data. You’ll come away with the peace of mind knowing that your current strategy is serving you well, or you’ll discover ways to improve your portfolio in the midst of this market uncertainty. Either way, what do you have to lose? Just give us a recent statement and we’ll provide the analysis, either in person or via Zoom, whichever you prefer. Call us at 865622-2162 to learn how easy it is. You can also join us for a 30 minute Zoom webinar on Tuesday, October 20, at 10:30 am, and we’ll dive deeper into these five investment concepts. 2020 TAX PLANNING – IS IT TOO LATE?

he year 2020 has been an extraordinary year for numerous reasons. Despite all the changes and continuous events highlighting this year, it does not look like this year is going to be a year of massive tax changes. No matter what happens in the 2020 elections, any changes will not take effect until 2021, so this year is likely to continue the gridlock which has kept the tax laws unchanged since 2018. Amid this year of constant turmoil, there were some changes in 2020 for retirement plans, thanks to the SECURE Act, which was signed into law late in 2019. The SECURE Act pushes the age that triggers RMDs from 70½ to 72. For account owners who turn 70½ after December 31, 2019, their beginning age for taking required minimum distributions (RMDs) rises from 70½ to 72. The rules for withdrawing money from inherited IRAs and 401(k)s is also tightened by the SECURE Act. Most accounts will need to be withdrawn and taxed within 10 years of the death of the IRA owner or 401(k) participant. Exceptions allow payouts over the beneficiary’s life expectancy for surviving spouses, the disabled or chronically ill, minor children until they reach 18 and beneficiaries who are not more than 10 years younger than the account owner. Inherited accounts of individuals who died before 2020 will not be affected by this change. Contributions to IRAs after age 70½. The SECURE Act repeals the rule that prohibited contributions to a traditional IRA by taxpayers age 70½ and older. Now taxpayers can continue to make contributions in traditional IRAs if you work into your 70s and beyond. However, there is an impact on qualified charitable distributions (QCDs). Before the SECURE Act, 100% of a QCD was excluded from taxable income. Now, a portion of a QCD can be included in taxable income if you’re age 70½ or older and deducting contributions to a traditional IRA. New 401(k) retirement opportunities for part-time employees. Part-time workers need to save for retirement, too. However, employees who haven’t worked at least 1,000 hours during the year typically aren’t allowed to participate in their employer’s 401(k) plan. That’s about to change. Starting in 2021, the SECURE ACT guarantees 401(k) plan eligibility for employees who have worked at least 500 hours per year for at least three consecutive years. The part-time employee must be 21 years old by the end of the three-year period. The new rule doesn’t apply to collectively bargained employees. Skip your RMD for 2020? New legislation, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) waives RMD obligations for the 2020 tax year. The new legislation for one year only allows the option to skip your 2020 RMD. If you wish to take advantage of this opportunity, you should contact your plan provider or investment firm to make sure your Required Minimum Distribution is suspended for 2020, especially if you have an automatic withdrawal scheduled.

HERE ARE SOME OTHER YEAR-END TAX PLANNING STEPS Double check your income tax withholdings It took the IRS several months to revise the income tax withholdings. In addition, many have received unemployment benefits during 2020. While unemployment benefits are taxable, income tax withholdings were optional. Some taxpayers may see their refunds turn into large amounts due to the IRS. Unemployment is taxable and unlike earned wages does not qualify the taxpayer for earned income credits. This could have a significant impact on the amount of refunds or increase the amount of taxes owed. Are your beneficiary designations up to date? Beneficiary designations will not affect your 2020 taxes but can affect the taxes of your heirs in the future. Particularly in light of the changes noted above regarding retirement plan distributions. Proper planning now will help minimize the taxes your beneficiaries will pay down the road. Beneficiary designations generally apply to life insurance policies, annuities and retirement plans.

Maximize retirement plan contributions For 2020, employer-sponsored 401(k), 403(b) or other tax-deferred retirement plans allow contributions up to $19,500, plus a catch-up provision for those 50 years of age or older of $6,500. For individual retirement accounts (IRAs), the limits are $6,000 plus a $1,000 catch-up contribution. Convert your traditional IRA to a ROTH IRA The ROTH IRA provides three tax advantages - first, withdrawals are not considered income for federal tax purposes; second, they are not included in your minimum required distribution (RMD) calculations; and third, the earnings and appreciation are tax-free. When you convert your traditional IRA to a ROTH IRA, the conversion amount is considered income and will increase your taxes in the year of conversion. However, with proper planning, the tax rates in effect in the year of conversion may be lower than in the year you are required to withdraw the funds. Two tax strategies to consider regarding the 2020 national elections With the presidential elections just a few weeks away, predicting and analyzing the potential tax law proposals that might affect taxpayers has generated a lot of concern and predictions. Some candidates are talking about raising taxes on higher income individuals and changes that could affect many taxpayers. This could be accomplished through several changes to our current tax laws. These include raising the tax rates on higher income individuals, taxing capital gains at ordinary income rates, eliminating the step-up in tax basis for inherited assets, lowering the estate and gift tax exemptions and ending the valuation discount for closely held family businesses. Planning for what might happen with income, estate and gift taxes is a challenge. Taking advantage of the high estate and gift tax exemptions and the valuation discounts could prove to be advantageous at this time if you anticipate potential tax law changes. Susan G. Komen® East TN Announces Virtual 2020 Knoxville Race for the Cure

S

Decision Prioritizes and Protects Participants’ Health and Safety During Covid-19

usan G. Komen® East TN announced the 2020 Knoxville Race for the Cure will be held virtually, rather than in-person this year. Originally planned for October 31 at World’s Fair Park, the event will now take place virtually on that day, paired with a Survivor Car Parade at World’s Fair Park. Komen will be maintaining the early bird registration fees for the event as well. “As an organization dedicated to saving lives, it is so important to protect the health of our participants, many of whom are breast cancer survivors or are currently in treatment for the disease,” said Amy Dunaway, Executive Director of Komen East TN. “Therefore, we will be leveraging technology this year to ensure we can race together – even if we can’t be together – because breast cancer is not

canceled.” Komen East TN noted that the Knoxville Race for the Cure serves two important purposes. It is an important fundraiser that fuels Komen’s local funding for screening, diagnostic services, and patient financial assistance, as well as breast cancer research. It also provides all those touched by breast cancer a sense of being a part of a large compassionate community committed to making a difference in the fight against breast cancer. Komen will still honor survivors and MBC thrivers on Race morning at World’s Fair Park with a one-mile Car Parade. In addition to the Car Parade for survivors and MBC thrivers, Komen will be creating a discount code for pets to participate this year! Each pet registered will receive a

scarf for them to wear during the Virtual Race for the Cure with their family. Be sure to follow Komen East TN on social media to find out about additional contests and events leading up to the Virtual Race Day. “We believe we will be able to preserve the sense of community through this new virtual fundraising race even though we will be racing where we are,” said Dunaway. “The need is greater than ever before, as people become unemployed, losing their insurance. Komen’s local patient financial assistance program is also saving lives by allowing patients to remain in treatment.” To register and begin fundraising today, visit www. October In the Garden

H

by

Lisa Grugin

allelujah, we have made it to October! That means it is time to talk about fall gardening. I am sure you have heard that “fall is for planting,” but there are some things that you need to know before you start. First of all, October tends to be our driest month. That means that you can’t plant and walk away expecting Mother Nature to do all the watering. Secondly, there are a few plants that don’t want to be planted after the soil temperature drops below 70 degrees. This category includes Crepe Myrtles and Ornamental Grasses. Those need to be planted soon, or wait until next year. Why is fall a good time to plant other trees and shrubs? Because about 85% of root growth occurs during the fall and winter. The plants aren’t actively growing, so they can focus completely on the roots. It also means that plants you put in this spring (that may have struggled during the summer) can “catch up” during the upcoming months. They can go into next spring with a new lease on life! Now for a subject change. A couple of years ago I wrote an article about various types of gardeners, and many of our readers identified with a character. I am going to go over those again so that you can identify where you may fall on the spectrum. You can’t know where to go if you don’t know where you are! Let’s start with Naked Nellie. This is the homeowner who has bought or built a house that has no landscaping. The house sticks out like a sore thumb and looks unfinished and barren. Sometimes this is because Nellie doesn’t know where to start, and sometimes it is because she spent more than anticipated on the house. I would encourage Nellie to pick an area or a couple of plants and just begin. Even if she only picks one statement plant, it is a start. Next we have Overplanted Oscar. This homeowner went to the store and bought

some cute little plants without checking how big they would be at maturity. (Sometimes this can also happen because a landscaper wanted to sell a lot of plants or a builder wanted the landscape to look “finished” as soon as it was planted.) Whatever the reason, Oscar is now forced to spend his weekends pruning or his house will be taken over by plants and he will have to machete his way through a jungle to get to work. Oscar needs to bring photos in and let us help him selectively eliminate or relocate some plants, or eventually he will end up having to start all over. Wrong Plant Wilma is our next homeowner. She is related to Oscar. She doesn’t realize that plants have specific needs, so she just plants them wherever she feels like it. The plants usually struggle, and she is very frustrated. There is no rhyme or reason in her organization, so it looks chaotic. Like Oscar, Wilma needs to come in and let us recommend removal and relocation. She might also need to adjust the pH of her soil for plants that are pH sensitive.

Next on the list is Overwhelmed Olivia. Olivia has bought a house with extensive, high maintenance landscaping and now she doesn’t know where to start. We also see this when the spouse or partner who was the gardener in the family passes away or is no longer able to garden. What was once a perfectly manicured landscape is now a wreck. Olivia needs to simplify, because working in your yard should be therapeutic, not traumatic! Perfectionist Paul is my final example. Paul has a perfectly manicured landscape. He gets frustrated because plants are actual living things that get bugs and diseases and grow beyond the extremely strict borders that he has allotted for them. He can frequently be found spending his weekends spraying toxic chemicals. Frankly, the Pauls are the ones I have the hardest time with. Chill out Paul! Nothing is perfect, so you need to learn to live with the

imperfections or you are going to drive yourself and everyone around you nuts. Where do you fall on this spectrum? Wherever it is, we can help. Stop by and see us or bring us some photos so that we can see what you have to work with. We will help you pick the right plant for the right area so that you can have a lovely yard that enhances your home without destroying your budget! That is all I have for this month. We have gotten several shipments of trees, shrubs and perennials in, as well as everything you need for fall decorating. Stop by and find something wonderful for your home! Changes in Breast Cancer Treatment for the Elderly

U

nfortunately, almost every one of us has known someone within our immediate circle affected by breast cancer. It’s one of the two most common types of cancers in the world according to the World Health Organization. But hope is a word that can now be associated with how this horrible disease affects older patients, thanks to exciting research developments. What does this mean for the elderly population who is more at risk for the disease? The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) indicates the guidelines for treating elderly breast cancer patients are lacking, and their goal is to change that

- especially because projections estimate that, sadly, invasive breast cancer cases will double in the next 10 years. Why are there not clearer guidelines for treating breast cancer in the elderly population? This age group is often excluded from clinical trials, which would help researchers understand how toxicities of cancer therapies affect older adults. Plus, older patients may respond to treatment differently since they’re at greater risk of side effects and even death. Thankfully, a BCRF investigator is currently conducting a multi-site clinical trial in older patients with early stage breast cancer. The trial hopes to assess how che-

motherapy affects overall health and identify patients who are most likely to be at a higher risk with standard treatments. Early stage breast cancer treatment commonly includes surgery, radiation, and adjuvant hormonal therapies - these therapies are substances that enhance the body’s immune response to an antigen or toxin. What’s exciting is the recent evidence showing that these hormonal therapies are such a beneficial treatment in many older women that radiation may not be required. However, many doctors still favor radiation treatment to help reduce the risk of recurrence and are hesitant to omit it from their protocols. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. By Angie Carroll, Owner – Amish Elegance

believe that what you will discover during your visit to Amish Elegance will truly amaze you. I say that because of my own personal experience, when prior to launching Amish Elegance, I had invested considerable time and effort researching and educating myself on this unique marketplace. What I was unprepared for was how quickly this marketplace could respond to evolving consumer tastes and trends. You will discover, as I did, that the only limitation to what these highly skilled Amish artisans can create is your own imagination, which fuels their creativity. They love to be challenged. It is this uniqueness that truly differentiates them from the offshore furniture manufacturers that dominate most of the American furniture marketplace today. One thing that has not changed, however, is their commitment to their craft. This commitment to quality and craftsmanship is a way of life passed down from generation to generation. And at Amish Elegance, we honor these centuries-old traditions by offering only the highest quality Amish hand-crafted furniture at amazing prices. Whether you are in the market for a single furniture piece or an entire room full of furniture, I would like to personally invite you to our special two-day event on October 9th and 10th featuring several Amish families that are anxious to help you to better understand their commitment to their craft. We will also play host to NEWS TALK 98.7 radio personalities Bob Yarbrough and Hallerin Hilton Hill, who will interview several of our Amish Elegance customers. This will be the perfect opportunity for you to discover first-hand, from our customers, just why Amish Elegance is the first choice of so many East Tennesseans. We also want you to discover why Amish Elegance will soon be recognized as “The Best Furniture and Interior Design Store” in the the region. So if you are ready to combine your creativity with that of our designers and our craftsmen, discover how you can have your furniture your way. Select from quality, solid, all American hardwoods, stain and paint colors, fabrics, leather and furniture dimensions. And while you’re here, be sure to check out our large selection of art, lighting, and home décor items to help complete your project. Mark your calendars for October 9th and 10th and be prepared to be amazed. Amish Elegance

Avoid Electric Shock Drowning

October, 2020, East Tennessee’s Mountain Views • 9B

By Patrick Boring, Lifetime Docks, LLC

A

ccording to WebMD, Electric Shock Drowning, or ESD, “happens when an electric current - typically a low-level AC current from boats, docks, hoists or lights - ‘escapes’ and shocks nearby swimmers. The shock paralyzes them, so they can’t swim or help themselves.” Fortunately, there is a device called ShockIQ that can prevent ESD by monitoring the water around your dock for stray electricity. If stray electricity is detected, a siren sounds and the system’s monitor light flashes. Power to your dock is shut down instantly, and your ShockIQ system goes on battery backup and continues to monitor for electricity. To learn how to protect yourself and

Dental Implants – Your Healthy Option

M

illions of Americans suffer from tooth loss, primarily the result of injury, periodontal disease, or decay. In the past, treatment options included bridges and dentures, but unfortunately, neither option addresses the issue of bone loss of the jawbone that often results from the loss of natural teeth.

The above image shows the deterioration of the jawbone over time in the absence of your natural teeth

One of the major advantages of dental implants is that the implant root, which is placed into the bone socket of the missing tooth, actually helps to support and maintain a

healthy level of jawbone mass, much the same as your natural teeth. Preventing jawbone loss helps to maintain both your health and a more youthful appearance, preventing the “collapsed” jaw look of those who have experienced significant bone loss of the jaw. The presence of natural tooth roots or implant roots continues to preserve the jawbone through the pressure and stimulus resulting from normal chewing action. This healthy pressure and stimulus is reduced by 90% or more with conventional dentures. So the positive and healthy implications of dental implants go far beyond just your appearance. With good oral hygiene and regular dental care, your implants can function just like your natural teeth while lasting a lifetime. And with the added advantage of the implants’ roots, you can avoid that sunken, premature appearance
