Green spring cleaning ideas that are kind to Mother Nature (BPT) - It’s not necessary to use harsh chemicals and toxins to achieve a cleaner, fresh-smelling home this spring. Homemade cleaning products and earth-friendly tactics can help you clean green. Here are green cleaning ideas and a supplies list that will make Mother Nature happy: * Begin by decluttering, which requires no chemicals at all. As you’re disposing of items you no longer need or want, be mindful of ways to keep them out of the waste stream. Donating gently used but no-longer-needed items such as clothing, furniture and books is a great way to reduce waste and cut clutter at the same time. * Clean windows instantly brighten your house inside and out, and they’re one of the easiest household cleaning chores to do with natural tools. A simple solution of white vinegar and water (about two tablespoons of vinegar per gallon of water) makes an effective, low-cost and green window cleaner. Spritz on windows using a spray bottle and use newspaper instead of paper towels for a streak-free clean. Don’t like the smell of vinegar? Straight lemon juice works just as well and smells distinctly like spring. * Pull out the white vinegar again to mix up a great floor cleaner that works well on surfaces from hardwood to vinyl to tile. You’ll need to add three or four cups of vinegar to about a gallon of hot water. Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil - peppermint or lemon are popular choices - so that when the vinegar aroma evaporates, the wonderful scent of the oil will linger. * Laundering linens is a cornerstone of spring cleaning. Mass marketed liquids and dryer sheets, however, rely on softening chemicals and petroleum-derived fragrances to impart softness and scent. Try this simple, natural fabric softening recipe from the essential oil experts at Aura Cacia:
Directions: Dissolve baking soda in vinegar, stir in lavender and pour into the water during your washer’s rinse cycle. Line dry clothes for maximum green value. Or, if you must use a dryer, add a wool dryer ball to shorten drying time and soften clothes. To boost the fresh scent of lavender, sprinkle several drops on the dryer ball or on a paper towel and add to the dryer during the cool down cycle. * Prepare a multi-purpose cleaner to help brighten and freshen surfaces throughout your home. Mix two tablespoons of unscented liquid soap with four drops of lemon essential oil and two drops of tea tree essential oil. Pour the mixture into a gallon of warm water. Use this multi-purpose solution with a sponge mop or rag to remove dirt from floors and hard surfaces such as countertops and appliances. * Stock up on natural cleaning supplies such as lemon, peppermint, eucalyptus and tea tree essential oils, baking and washing soda, Borax, white distilled vinegar, spray and squeeze bottles, natural bristle scrubbing brushes, old newspaper, cotton dusting cloths and hemp or jute fiber scrubbing cloths. * Instead of chemical air fresheners that can irritate allergy sufferers, make your own room fresheners using cotton balls soaked in essential oil. Store in decorative ceramic dishes out of reach of children and pets. For bedrooms, lavender is relaxing. Lemon and other citrus oils are invigorating for bathrooms, and cinnamon and clove impart mouth-watering aroma to kitchens.
Ingredients: 1/2 cup vinegar 2 tablespoons baking soda 1/2 teaspoon lavender essential oil

How to prepare your pet for summer fun - and beyond (BPT) - The dark, cold days of winter are nearly behind us, and many people are looking forward to warmer weather and outdoor activities. Dogs also appreciate their time in the sun. So, it’s important to keep in mind what you need to do to make sure your dog is ready to enjoy summer activities. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) provides important summertime pet care tips, including: * Provide adequate water and shade * Never leave your dog in the car * Take walks and play outside during cooler hours of the day * Avoid walking on hot pavement that can hurt your dog’s paws * Provide regular flea and tick protection And, if your dog isn’t on a regular schedule of heartworm preventive, now is a good time to start. Many people don’t realize that while mosquito bites are usually a minor irritation for most people, for dogs, just one mosquito bite can be life-threatening. This is because mosquitoes carry heartworm. Heartworm disease may exhibit few symptoms. When diagnosed, it is difficult and expensive to treat and, if not caught in time, can be fatal. If you don’t live in an area with a heavy concentration of mosquitoes, or if your dog doesn’t spend a lot of time outside, you may think that your dog is not at risk. According to the American Heartworm Society (AHS), “Heartworm disease is spreading to new regions of the country each year. Stray and neglected dogs and certain wildlife such as coyotes, wolves and foxes can be carriers of heartworms. 8 everythinglake.com
Mosquitoes blown great distances by the wind and the relocation of infected pets to previously uninfected areas all contribute to the spread of heartworm disease.” The AHS recommends yearround protection because it is “an easy thing to do and is much less expensive than treating serious, sometimes deadly, heartworm disease.” Leading veterinary organizations including the Companion Animal Parasite Council, the American Animal Hospital Association and the AVMA also support year-round protection. For many people, however, remembering that monthly heartworm pill is easier said than done. Recently, the U.S. Food and Drug

How to prepare your pet for summer fun - and beyond Administration Center for Veterinary Medicine agreed to revisions under which ProHeart 6, a six-month injectable heartworm preventive, may be administered. The changes were made based on a safety study encompassing 4 1/2 years’ worth of data that demonstrated that predictable safety and efficacy remained consistent as use of the injection increased. This data shows that ProHeart 6 is safe and effective for the prevention of canine heartworm disease for six full months in dogs age 6 months and older. “Monthly heartworm medications are effective, if they are given on the proper schedule,” says John Santilli of Mayfair Animal Hospital in Cary, N.C. “Unfortunately, many of my clients have busy lives, and, while they have the best of intentions, doses are missed. Heartworm disease is a serious problem here in North Carolina. That’s one reason I rely on the six-month, injectable heartworm preventive.
Not only does it give my clients the peace of mind that their dogs are protected against heartworm disease, the biannual visits allow me to make sure that those dogs are healthy in other respects, too. We can check for any dental issues, examine for tumors and help keep our canine patients in good shape for summer activities - and all year round.” As with any medication, it’s critical to consult with your dog’s veterinarian to see if an injectable heartworm preventive is a good option to provide six months of protection to your dog and six months of peace of mind for you. continued on page 28

Boomers who take action now may enjoy better brain health, research shows (BPT) - Baby boomers often think of 50 as the new 40. This is especially true in 2014 as the last members of the think-young generation reach the half-century mark. Yet with an unprecedented life expectancy - 78.7 years - for the youngest of the boomers, it is more important than ever to incorporate healthy habits to keep your mind beautiful during the second half of life. The latest science indicates there are simple, but powerful steps you can still take now to help your brain remain strong, healthy and beautiful as you age. A partnership between the National Center for Creative Aging (NCCA) and the life’sDHA brand, Beautiful Minds: Finding Your Lifelong Potential campaign identifies key lifestyle factors known as the “Four Dimensions of Brain Health” that can positively impact your brain health throughout life - diet and nutrition, physical health, mental health and social wellbeing. “Keeping the brain healthy is easier than many people realize. Everyday actions such as maintaining a diet including DHA omega-3 and other important nutrients like vitamin E and lutein, as well as staying active physically, mentally and socially, are all good ways to maintain long-term brain health and cognition,” says Michael Roizen, M.D., co-founder of Real Age Inc., author and advisor to the Beautiful Minds campaign. Revealing how well Americans today are living out these four dimensions, the 2014 America’s Brain Health Index outlines state-bystate brain health rankings and uncovers areas in which where more brain health activities are needed. Here are a few tips for you to follow to help maintain a healthy brain at every age. The nourished mind Many important dietary nutrients help to promote brain health, but recent research indicates a potential link between three key nutrients and a reduced risk of cognitive decline. Those nutrients are DHA omega-3, 12 everythinglake.com
vitamin E and lutein. For years, research has demonstrated the benefits of DHA in maintaining brain health, yet most people eating a Western diet don’t get enough DHA. It can be found naturally in fatty fish such as salmon and ocean trout, along with DHA-fortified foods like juice, milk, eggs, tortillas, yogurt, and algal DHA supplements. A study recently published in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) showed that vitamin E may positively impact functional performance among participants with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease. However, just over 90 percent of Americans don’t get enough vitamin E from food. Vitamin E can be found in milk, butter, eggs, vegetable oils, nuts, whole grains, wheat germ and dark leafy greens like spinach, and is also available as a supplement. Additionally, new research on lutein, typically known for its benefits to eye health, has found a correlation between positive cognitive function in healthy older people and a diet rich in lutein. Incorporate lutein superfoods into your diet, such as dark leafy green vegetables like kale, spinach, collards and turnip greens, or egg yolks, peas and corn. The physically active mind Research has found associations between physical activity and improved cognitive skills. Engaging in physical activity for at least 30 minutes a day may encourage new brain cells and connections. Take a walk over lunch, take the stairs instead of the elevator, join a club sporting league, or do something you enjoy outdoors.
Boomers who take action now may enjoy better brain health, research shows Getting a good night’s sleep regularly as well as maintaining a healthy weight can also help to improve your brain health and minimize your risk of diabetes, high cholesterol and hypertension. And, if you use tobacco - stop. Research shows, regular tobacco users have a higher risk of rapid cognitive decline, compared to those who do not smoke, as well as raised risk for dementia and stroke. The mentally engaged mind Studies have suggested brain cells, much like muscle cells, can grow bigger and stronger with cognitive challenges and stimulation. People who continue to learn new
activities and develop new skills and interests are exercising their brains in ways that may help to build connections in the brain, helping to support brain function.

Sodium truths: Americans are eating the right amount of salt (BPT) - Contrary to popular belief, the average American eats just the right amount of salt. In fact every single population throughout the world, regardless of location, state of development, culture and cuisine, all ingest a similar amount of salt when compared to the U.S. average. It doesn’t matter if people get their salt from packaged or restaurants foods or add it in themselves, the amount stays fairly constant. Salt, a combination of sodium and chloride, is a nutrient that is essential to life and good health. In fact, aside from water, salt is the most common food ingredient we consume and that’s no accident. Without salt, the blood in our circulatory system would simply stop flowing and we would quickly die. The sodium portion of salt allows our nerves to transmit their electrical impulses throughout our body and aids in the absorption of nutrients. Salt’s chloride portion is also instrumental in maintaining proper blood pressure. Like all other essential nutrients, our bodies naturally regulate the proper amount we need to stay healthy. If you eat too much salt, the body simply eliminates it along with all other waste materials. Likewise, any activity resulting in excessive loss of these nutrients, such as exercise, has to be counterbalanced by an increased consumption of salt to make up for this additional loss. 18 everythinglake.com
If you don’t get enough salt the body reacts by going into overdrive in order to hold on to the salt it needs. The hormonal system (called the ReninAngiotensinAldosterone System or RAAS) switches on to counter the effects of insufficient salt consumption. In the short run this is just a normal process of the body adjusting, but if low salt levels persist then the consequences for our overall health can be very severe. According to recent findings from the Institute Of Medicine, consuming less than half the current average can cause harm. Consuming insufficient amounts of salt can lead to the development of Insulin resistance in as little as one week. A persistent low salt diet can lead to diabetes, cardiovascular failure, dehydration, unsteadiness, loss of cognition and death. The body has an innate ability to know its ideal level of salt consumption by signaling our salt appetite; it is called the “wisdom of the body”. Of course, there may be some individuals who are salt sensitive and who should reduce their salt consumption, but this should be done under a doctor’s supervision in order to make sure that all their health outcomes are improved, not simply blood pressure.
Call 811 before every digging project, large or small (BPT) - With the snow melted and the ground thawed, many eager homeowners and landscape professionals are ready to start projects that require digging this spring. During this transition into “digging season, Common Ground Alliance (CGA), the association dedicated to protecting underground utilities and the people who dig near them, reminds homeowners and professional diggers that calling 811 is the first step toward protecting you and your community from the risk of unintentionally damaging an underground line. Every digging project, no matter how large or small, warrants a free call to 811. Installing a mailbox or fence, building a deck or landscaping are all examples of digging projects that should only begin a few days after making a call to 811. Calling this number
connects you to your local one-call utility notification center. According to data collected by CGA, more than half of American homeowners will not make a free call to 811 before digging. Out of those surveyed, 67 percent know that the paint and flags on the ground are used to mark buried utilities, indicating that awareness of underground infrastructure is high among homeowners, but the importance of calling 811 is low. Here’s how it works: * One free, simple phone call to 811 makes it easy for your local one-call center to notify all appropriate utility companies of your intent to dig. Call a few days prior to digging to ensure enough time for the approximate location of utility lines to be marked with flags or paint. continued on page 28

Big family, big love:
Easy entertaining tips for large groups (BPT) - The sun is shining, leaves are green and balmy temperatures have arrived spring and summer months are the ideal time to entertain at home. Between holidays, graduation parties and warm weather festivities, there’s always a reason to gather for a great meal and some fun. With a few organization tricks and cooking tips, even the largest families can come together to enjoy quality time with one another while sharing in food and fun. No one knows more about hosting large family gatherings than Kay Robertson, the matriarch of the popular Robertson family. As the weather warms, she’ll be whipping up some of her favorite foods and inviting friends and family, young and old to her table. After all, hosting meals for so many people is a regular activity for this passionate cook. “I love it when my family is gathered under one roof,” says Miss Kay, who recently endorsed home builder Clayton Homes to help hardworking Americans realize their dream of homeownership. “What we say around here is food will fill the belly, but love will fill the home.” If you’re planning to host an upcoming party, consider some of these tried-and-true entertaining strategies to ensure everyone has a wonderful time: 1. Serve food buffet or family-style When it comes to hosting a party with a lot of people, skip the formalities and opt for serving food buffet or family-style. If you have an island or breakfast bar in your kitchen, this is the ideal place to set out a buffet and let people line up to dish for themselves and fill up their plates. Another option is to serve food family-style, which means having everyone sit down at a big table and serve food on large platters. Then everyone is free to pass the food and serve themselves.
20 everythinglake.com
2. Feel good about smart kitchen upgrades Forget formal dining rooms, today the kitchen is the heart of the home. To be the best cook you can be, you need a few important tools to get the job done right - especially when cooking for large gatherings. Miss Kay recommends every kitchen include a large sink, gooseneck faucets and plenty of great lighting. Upgrades like these are part of Miss Kay’s Designer Kitchen, a customizable option available for new Commander Series homes built by Clayton Homes. The kitchen design includes a gooseneck faucet with retractable sprayer, a farmhouse sink and a sizeable island (option not available in all models) - all perfect when hosting large family gatherings. 3. Maximize space for relaxing and socializing Even the coziest of homes can accommodate big groups with a little thoughtful planning. Before the crowds arrive, consolidate clutter to open up areas for easy socializing. Think about how the space will be used and consider grouping furniture together to encourage comfort and conversation. If you’re short on seating, add a folding chair or two for adults. Since the weather is warm, open the windows to let the fresh breeze in and encourage kids to play outside in the yard while the meal is being prepared. 4. Customize your menu Menu planning is easy when you blend family favorites with other dishes that feature a few exciting twists. If everyone adores your cornbread recipe, make sure to make it for your party, but then feel free to get creative in other areas of your menu. For example, try offering a new type of sweet tea or explore unique savory and spicy Louisiana recipes, like Low Country Deviled Eggs.

Bridal registry trends inspire new dinnerware traditions (BPT) - What are the hot trends of the season in bridal registry? For many bridal couples it is mixing something old with something new to create updated dinnerware designs. The table looks refreshed and renewed while allowing couples to enjoy treasured family heirlooms. “After years of leaning toward casual dinnerware, we’re seeing a resurgence in interest for traditional bridal china, crystal and flatware,” says Replacements, Ltd. Product Marketing Manager Keith Winkler. “Not only are bridal couples buying current patterns, we’re seeing them reinvent ‘something old, something new’ by embracing vintage china and crystal passed down through their families. In our retail store, we’re showing couples how to spice up grandma’s refined pattern, say from the 1920s, by mixing it with contemporary patterns to create unlimited design options.” Replacements’ Visual Merchandiser John Griffith has dubbed this creative push, “pattern blending.” Griffith suggests bridal couples begin with cherished, inherited china, then build their tablescape by blending additional patterns and pieces, complementary shapes and sizes, solid colors and designs, reflecting their own esthetic and lifestyle. It’s a great way to go from the china you like to place settings you love. “You can choose many different directions by blending current patterns with vintage dinnerware, from dressing up cherished older patterns for elegant formal entertaining to creating something fun and funky for a casual evening with friends,” says Griffith. “Some of the more popular trends for us have been pairing pressed glass plates in coordinating or complementary colors and using porcelain or ceramic plates with metallic finishes in pewter and gunmetal. I love to mix shapes like square and round plates or different edge shapes like smooth and scalloped.” Griffith says you can add a whole new dimension to a vintage place setting by 22 everythinglake.com

pieces with the monogram ‘G’ as the common characteristic,” he says. “You could also mix patterns with floral designs on the handles or other shared similarities. Choose the design element
you love and run with it.” Bridal registries are also trending back. In a new spin on tradition, Griffith says grooms are getting more involved in choosing registry selections. One of the hot items on their wish lists - barware. With the growing popularity of wine and the return to home entertaining, Griffith says couples are looking for the proper elements, such as stems and bowls, to complement various wine varietals. And they’re not limiting their barware to crystal; casual stemware, glassware and acrylics account for large percentage in the overall barware increase.
Alternative metal serveware is also trending on today’s registries. Griffith defines these serving pieces as the perfect marriage of form and function. “Not only do these pieces come in fun designs - once heated, the alloy retains warmth to keep food warm longer or cooler if you chill these pieces. Alternative metal serveware is very durable and easy to clean and, with just a little care will maintain its shine for years. Some of higher quality and most popular patterns we’re selling are made by Lenox, Arthur Court and Wilton Armetale.” Griffith leads design seminars on creating trendy tables at the company’s retail store. Many of his insights appear on Replacements’ YouTube channel and Facebook page at www. facebook.com/Replacements. One challenge bridal couples often encounter with heirloom pieces lies in the fact the name of the pattern may have been lost or forgotten through the years. Griffith suggests taking advantage of Replacements’ free pattern identification service. Additional information is available on the company’s website, www. replacements.com.

Easy do-it-yourself Easter: Fun Easter projects for the whole family
(BPT) - The Easter bunny is right around the corner, which means chocolate eggs, chick marshmallows and stuffed bunnies will soon be popping up around the home. Celebrate with a build-your-own Easter basket with the kids for some quality time for the entire family. DIY doesn’t mean it needs to be complicated or difficult. Here are a few great ideas with some easy shortcuts to make it an enjoyable experience for everyone. The basket It all starts with the basket. The egg hunt and basket fillings wouldn’t be complete without an Easter basket decked out in bright spring colors. It’s not easy to spend hours making your own Easter basket, but you can still make it your own with custom Easter baskets from Personal Creations. Pick out the size, color pattern and design, and add your kids’ names to make it a personalized basket that can be from the Easter Bunny himself. Best of all, it comes with a fluffy plush bunny and Easter sweets to make it a complete package for the entire family to enjoy. The eggs Colored eggs are an essential part of any Easter celebration. This year, add a fun and simple twist to the usual DIY egg coloring with a tissue paper egg dye. Simply wet the eggs, wrap it in brightly colored tissue paper, and spray the 24 everythinglake.com
eggs with water to ensure all of the paper has been wetted. Once the egg is dry, kids will be able to easily remove the tissue paper. Beneath, they’ll find a perfectly dyed egg that carries the appearance of stained glass. The sweets No Easter celebration is complete without treats to sweeten the basket. Marshmallow chicks and chocolate eggs are a classic, but adding a gourmet twist to the list of everyday sweets can make receiving this Easter basket an unforgettable experience for even the adults in the family. For an easy twist on the classic, ask kids to shred leftover bits of wrapping paper left around the house to make homemade Easter grass, and add it to a simple Easter treat pail. Then, fill the pail with Easterthemed cake pops from Shari’s Berries for a festive gourmet treat everyone can enjoy. The fluff Bunnies get all the attention during Easter, but little chicks can be an adorable alternative to add to the basket. For this simple craft, ask children to draw and color a picture of a chick. Make sure the chick is facing forward and not from a profile viewpoint. They do not need to draw the wings; those come later. When the little artists are finished, cut the chicks out. Next, help children trace their own hands and cut these traces out. Glue the traced hands to the chick with the thumbs up, and just like that, the chick has wings with a familiar look. The grownup basket Grownups deserve some Easter fun too. Forego the basket filled with candy and design a fresh and colorful take on the Easter basket. Start with a classic wicker basket with liner and add some fresh spring flowers to brighten up the look. Fresh flowers are a beautiful way to brighten anyone’s day, and fresh, vibrant flowers from ProFlowers make it easy to order and arrange flowers quickly and easily. Bright spring daffodils arranged in a pretty spread or 30 multi-colored tulips hanging loosely out of the basket is a great way to celebrate Easter in an upscale way.
Eye-opening facts about aging eyes and vision problems (BPT) - Most Americans know that vision problems begin to increase as they age. What they may not realize is that reduced vision is also linked to a higher frequency of falls, injuries and depression. Eye disorders such as cataracts, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration can rob seniors of their independence. Here are some facts and tips for maintaining eye health and vision while aging gracefully: Many people can avoid vision loss as they age Losing sight as you age should not be considered an inevitability. In fact, the World Health Organization states that 80 percent of blindness is preventable if the disease or condition causing it is diagnosed and treated in time. Although many people find that they need reading glasses as they get older, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in six seniors has a vision impairment that cannot be corrected with glasses or contact lenses. This may be caused by common eye conditions and diseases, including: * Cataract, a clouding of the eye's lens. * Glaucoma, a disease which can rob the eye of its peripheral vision. * Age-related macular degeneration, the deterioration of the central vision that is responsible for the ability to see fine details clearly. With proper preventive care and timely treatment, many seniors can avoid permanent vision loss due to these diseases. Eye exams are key to healthy vision Many eye diseases and conditions have few or no noticeable symptoms until vision has already been lost, so it's important to keep up with regular exams. By age 40, a person should have obtained a baseline comprehensive medical eye exam and by age 65, eye exams should be scheduled every one to two years, or as recommended by an ophthalmologist - a medical doctor who specializes in the diagnosis, medical and surgical treatment of all eye diseases and conditions. Finding an ophthalmologist can be easy There are approximately 30,000 ophthalmologists across the United States.
For seniors concerned about the cost of seeing an ophthalmologist, EyeCare America, a national public service program of the Foundation for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, is available to ensure seniors have access to eye care they need. The program matches eligible seniors who haven't seen an ophthalmologist in three or more years with one of more than 6,000 volunteer ophthalmologists who provide them with a comprehensive eye exam and care, often at no out-ofpocket cost for up to one year. To see if you, your friends or family members are eligible, visit www. eyecareamerica.org. A healthy body also benefits your eyes Here are a few tips to help care for your eyes between exams: * Eat well. Ensure you include citrus fruits, vegetable oils, nuts, whole grains, dark green leafy vegetables and cold water fish in your diet. * Exercise regularly. Not only does it help your heart, waistline and energy levels, but 30 minutes of physical exercise a day will also benefit your eyes. * Wear sunglasses. Sunglasses protect the eyes from cataracts and even eye lid cancers, so make sure you wear them, especially during the summer, when at the beach or in the water, when participating in winter sports, and when taking medications that increase your sensitivity to light. * Don't smoke. Smoking increases your risk of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration, as well as risks for cardiovascular diseases that indirectly influence the health of your eyes. "Keeping your eyes in good health is incredibly important, and the first step is to get an eye exam," says Dr. Charles P. Wilkinson, an ophthalmologist and chair of EyeCare America. "Most people take vision for granted until they notice changes-too late to avoid vision loss. Maintaining your eye health can help you keep your independence."

Wood is good: The must-have material for your spring home spruce-up (BPT) - Thinking of sprucing up your home for spring? You’re not alone; one in three homeowners say they’ll take on at least one home improvement project in the first half of 2014, according to a recent survey by Burst Media. And it turns out, freshening your home for spring is a smart investment. Home sales and prices are up, and mortgage rates are still considered low by historical standards. The combination is a recipe for a strong 2014 home remodeling forecast. Homeowners are regaining equity in their homes, and that confidence is expected to spur them to take on deferred projects for their own enjoyment, or upgrade their homes for sale. In its annual survey, Remodeling Magazine reports that wood deck additions deliver the second highest return on investment of the home improvement projects surveyed. If you’re looking for a way to make your spring spruce-up add value to your home, wood is a great option. Wood is known for its versatility, ease of use and natural beauty. Whether you’re looking to update your living space or transform your outdoor entertaining area, Mark and Theresa Clement, home improvement pros and spokespersons for Wood, Naturally, offer simple, do-ityourself tips for incorporating wood into your spring home improvement projects: * Prepping decks for spring entertaining “One of the best things you can do in the spring to spruce up your house is to clean and refinish your wood deck,” Mark says. “The natural beauty of a well-maintained deck transforms a backyard into a gathering place.” 26 everythinglake.com
After you’ve carefully cleaned the deck to remove dirt and debris, choose a finish. Both sealers and stains are designed to seal out elements. Clear sealers contain no pigment, allowing the natural beauty of the wood to show through. Stains may contain a little pigment (labeled as “tone” or “transparent”), be semitransparent or come in solid colors. Avoid paint, which can form a film on top of the wood and bubble or flake. Can’t decide between a semitransparent stain and a water-repellant sealer? Try using
Wood is good: The must-have material for your spring home spruce-up the sealer first. If you change your mind later, it’s easy to switch to a semitransparent stain when the deck needs to be refinished. If you do opt for a sealer, use one that contains ultraviolet light-blockers to protect against sun damage and mildewcides to inhibit the growth of mildew. * Add crown molding to a room Crown molding imparts an upscale, elegant air to any room - and you only need basic DIY tools to install it. “Crown molding bridges the junction of walls and ceilings - a prominent visual location where an architectural accent can really shine,” says Theresa. “While crown molding is a high-impact, higher-difficulty project, it’s well within the abilities of most DIYers. Plus, you probably already have the tools you need in your toolbox - with a miter saw, nails and a hammer, you can transform your favorite room with a custom finish.” When choosing your molding, remember to keep a consistent scale from floor to ceiling. You may be tempted to install a wide, impressive crown molding and skimp on the base or casings, but molding sizes need to be balanced throughout the room. Wherever possible, use corner pieces, plinth blocks and other transition pieces - they make installation simpler, minimize the need for miter cuts and help joints stay closed despite seasonal changes in humidity. Finally, don’t paint your crown molding and trim. Instead, opt for a clear sealer and allow the natural texture of the wood to shine through, adding warmth, personalization and a natural touch to your interior decor. * Install wainscoting Wainscoting has long been a hallmark of fine construction and design. Wood paneling is applied to a lower section of
wall - typically in dining rooms, but also in kitchens, hallways and even bedrooms. If you crave old-world elegance in your modern home, wainscoting is an easy, cost-effective way to achieve that look. Depending on the style you select and how you choose to finish your wainscoting, you can create whimsy or elegance, rustic appeal or modern sophistication. If you choose to panel with wainscoting, it’s important to ensure pieces are level. If yours will have a top cap, a router - a power tool used to bevel or round an edge on a square piece of wood - can provide nice detail at the top of panels. Finally, while wainscoting is frequently painted, there’s no rule that says you must paint yours. Consider a simple clear sealer or semitransparent stain that will allow the natural beauty and character of the wood to shine through.

Call 811 before every digging project, large or small from page 19
* When you call 811, a representative from your local one-call center will ask for the location and description of your digging project. * Your local one-call center will notify affected utility companies, which will then send professional locators to the proposed dig site to mark the approximate location of your lines. * Only once all lines have been accurately marked, roll up those sleeves and carefully dig around the marked areas. There are nearly 20 million miles of underground utility lines in the United States that your family depends on for everyday needs including electric, gas, water and sewer, cable TV, high-speed Internet and landline telephone. Unintentionally striking one of these lines can result in inconvenient outages for entire neighborhoods, harm to yourself or your neighbors and repair costs. Every six minutes, homeowners and professionals unintentionally damage an underground utility line because they did not call 811 before digging. According to the most recent data from CGA, damage occurs less than 1 percent of the time when the digger has called 811 before a project. To find out more information about 811 or the one-call utility notification center in your area, visit www.call811.com.
