What’s in your pool water? (BPT) - You hit the diving board, get some air and tuck up for the biggest cannonball of the season. It feels good to be back in the pool again. Or so you think. Because the truth is, if you knew what was in the pool water you were jumping into, maybe you wouldn’t be jumping in the first place. A crowded pool Swimmers and pool owners alike know pools are full of chemicals such as chlorine, but pools that lack proper maintenance allow for plenty of unwelcome guests as well. Pathogens, bacteria, algae and other invaders can all call a pool’s water home without proper cleaning. “The importance of ph and alkalinity levels are often overlooked,” says Matt Giovanisci of Swim University. “The balance of the water is one of the most important things.” Giovanisci says that while maintaining proper ph and alkalinity levels are a key first step that will allow the chlorine to do its job, many pool owners just aren’t too excited about the maintenance side of pool ownership, increasing the threat of pathogens contaminating the water. Today’s technology makes it easy Pool ownership today is vastly advanced from just 10 years ago, offering pool owners easy solutions to cleaner pools, without relying solely on chemicals. Older methods of pool cleaning include the use of pole vacuums and either suction or pressure side cleaners. Today however, the market is decidedly shifting toward robotic pool cleaners, and Giovanisci says it’s easy to see why. “Robotic pool cleaners do three things real well,” he says. “They vacuum and scrub pool floors, some actually scrub the walls helping to remove algae and prevent permanent staining, they have a filtration system built into them that helps purify the water, and they help circulate the water and
available chemicals to provide a healthier cleaner pool.” Many owners also appreciate the robotic pool cleaner’s energy efficiency as it only costs about 5 cents a cycle hour to use. Robotic pool cleaners also work independently, just set them in the pool, press a button and off they go, saving pool owners both time and labor. Prices have also come down considerably, making them more affordable than ever. “When it comes to robotic pool cleaners, my favorite brand has to be Aquabot,” Giovanisci says. “They invented robotic pool cleaning and make a really simple and easy-to-use product.” The best pool cleaners are specifically designed to also filter the pool’s water, helping to remove the harmful contaminants. Aquabot robotic pool cleaners, for example, actually filter water down to two microns, reducing the need to rely solely on chemical solutions. And one innovation that really seems to help are the power washing jets; they channel the clean, filtered water to power wash surfaces and help vacuum small particles like silt and sand. Whatever pool cleaning solution you decide upon, Giovanisci says efficiency is the key. “Purchase from brands you trust and let technology do the work for you. And with all of the options available today, simply invest in the features that are important to you and your pool,” he says. “Enjoy and with minimal effort you’ll have the cleanest, healthiest pool in the neighborhood.”

Small-batch cooking trend moves from human tables to pets’ plates
(BPT) - Food trends constantly evolve, reflecting society’s growing awareness of how what we eat affects our health and the environment. More Americans are choosing foods with an eye to nutrition, natural and locally sourced ingredients, and sustainable preparation processes. They’re not just considering those factors for their own plates, either - they’re thinking about them when it comes to choosing pet food, too. “Trends in pet food have always mirrored what’s happening in human food,” says Geoff Bednar, senior scientist with Hill’s Pet Nutrition. “When human foods became more processed and mass produced with less-than-healthy ingredients, the same thing occurred in some pet foods. Now, as consumer awareness shifts toward more healthful options, Americans are looking for the same positive qualities in the food they feed their pets.” A survey of grocery shoppers found that many are conscious of the ingredients 8 everythinglake.com
that go into the food they choose and how that food is prepared. Twenty-eight percent of those surveyed by the Hartman Group said they want food and beverages that are minimally processed, 26 percent look for ingredients they recognize, and 25 percent seek foods with the shortest list of ingredients. What’s more, they’re willing to purchase specialty items; nearly 75 percent of consumers say they made a specialty food purchase last year, according to Mintel Group Ltd., a market research firm.
Small-batch cooking trend moves from human tables to pets’ plates “Consumers care about ingredients, and their understanding of the importance of ingredients is constantly evolving. As pet owners’ expectations for their own foods change, it’s natural that their expectation for the pets’ foods will follow,” Bednar says. Pet food trends of recent years have included corn and grain-free foods, gluten-free options and foods made with more natural ingredients, such as ancient grains. The most recent trend - small-batch style cooking - focuses on how pet food processing is associated by consumers with the quality and healthfulness of the finished product. With the entry into the marketplace of products like Hill’s Ideal Balance Crafted by Hill’s Pet Nutrition, pet food manufacturers are responding to consumer demand for natural ingredients and increased care in the production process. Small-batch style cooking invests extra preparation, time and attention to detail to produce a higher-quality product on a smaller scale. Microbrews are an example of smallbatch cooking. Hill’s employs small-batch
practices to produce its new Ideal Balance Crafted product line, and incorporates the natural ingredients such as novel proteins (trout, salmon and tuna), whole and ancient grains (quinoa and buckwheat) and wholesome vegetables (sweet potatoes and peas) that health-conscious pet parents are looking for in food for their pets. However, pet nutrition experts warn that natural does not always mean well-balanced nutrition. That is why Hill’s relies on pet nutritionists to carefully formulate recipes with select ingredients that together provide an optimal balance of nutrients for each of its products. Combining the science of perfectly balanced nutrition with the art of slower, more thoughtful cooking processes of smallbatch preparation gives consumers a natural, carefully produced pet food option that does not compromise on nutritional balance. To learn more, visit HillsIdealBalanceCrafted.com. “Just as they’re seeking better options for their own tables, pet owners care about the quality of their pets’ food, as well,” Bednar says.

Termites 101: What every homebuyer should know this spring
(BPT) - It’s a cruel coincidence that the spring’s real-estate buying season corresponds with another far less pleasant one - termite swarming season. When eager homebuyers emerge from winter hibernation to look for their dream homes, winged termites emerge, too, and swarms of them go in search of new places to establish their colonies. “Termites cause about $5 billion in property damage every year - damage that typically isn’t covered by homeowners’ insurance policies,” says Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the National Pest Management Association (NPMA). “In spring, swarms emerge in every state except Alaska. Potential homebuyers need to be aware of the risks associated with termite damage, and of the importance of having any home they’re considering inspected for termites and other wooddestroying organisms.” More than half of Americans (52 percent) have never had their
12 everythinglake.com
homes inspected for termites, according to an NPMA survey. Yet 38 percent worry about discovering termites in their homes and 33 percent have had termite damage or know someone who has, the survey found. If you’ll be buying (or selling) a home this spring, the NPMA offers some valuable termite information: * The average homebuyer and homeowner might have difficulty spotting the evidence of a termite infestation. Termites chew through wood, flooring and other materials behind-the-scenes, so it can take years before
Termites 101: What every homebuyer should know this spring the signs of an infestation are visible to the untrained eye. An inspection by a licensed pest professional is the best way to detect an infestation of wood-destroying organisms (WDOs) - especially if you live in a termiteprone area of the country. * A WDO inspection is different from a simple structural inspection. Buyers may assume that the person who does the pre-purchase home inspection will look for termites while assessing the condition of the home’s physical structure and systems. While some inspectors might spot signs of termite damage, others will not. Buyers should be sure to have their prospective home inspected by a licensed pest professional. The inspection will last about an hour, and the specialist will probe the home from top to bottom to look for telltale signs of termite damage. After the inspection is over, the specialist will report to the buyers what he or she has found, and an estimate of how much it might cost to remediate any termite damage he or she has discovered. * Different states have varying laws about termite inspections. Some may require one before a home can be sold, while others do not. Check with your realtor about the laws in
your state, and keep in mind that many lenders will require a pest inspection be done in addition to a structural inspection - especially if the home you are buying is in a termite-prone area. * Termite detection, remediation and control are not do-it-yourself tasks. If an inspector finds signs of a termite infestation and damage, you’ll need professionals to remedy the problem. Buyers who discover problems before the sale is final will be better able to negotiate with the seller to take care of the problem. In some states, the law may not allow the sale to be finalized until the damage is addressed, and lenders may refuse to finalize a mortgage for a home with unresolved termite issues. If the termite inspection shows your new home is pest-free, congratulations! After the sale is finalized, be sure to take steps to protect your home from termites going forward, including having the home inspected for termites at least once every three years, and every year if you live in an area prone to termite infestations. To learn more about termite prevention or to find a licensed pest professional in your area, visit www.pestworld.org, the education website of the NPMA.

Golf legend Arnold Palmer and actor-writer-comedian Kevin Nealon find common ground in fight against blood clots
(BPT) - Arnold Palmer is one of the world’s greatest professional golfers; Kevin Nealon is one of his generation’s most beloved actors / comedians. Though seemingly worlds apart, they’ve experienced conditions that raise their chances for developing blood clots and/or stroke. The unlikely duo has set out to inspire millions of people like them to understand the importance of prevention and treatment. Palmer is one of up to 900,000 Americans who have experienced a blood clot caused by deep vein thrombosis-or DVT-which is when a blood clot forms in a deep vein in the body, often the leg or thigh. Up to 300,000 people die every year from the condition. About half of the people diagnosed with DVT don’t experience any of the symptoms, which include swelling, pain or tenderness, and warmth or redness of the skin on the affected area. “I’m fortunate that my DVT was diagnosed and treated before it led to something even more serious,” said Palmer. “Being an athlete or an active person doesn’t make you immune to blood clots. They can happen to anyone at any time.” Always quick to make a joke, Kevin Nealon chalked up his first symptoms of nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (or AFib) to a pounding heart that came from trying to 14 everythinglake.com
impress his future wife. “We were on vacation and I was attempting to ignore the age difference between us by acting energetic-playing volley ball, water skiing, and only resting for short naps,” said Nealon. “Suddenly, I couldn’t keep up anymore. My heart was beating so fast that I became concerned and had to see the hotel doctor. I was later diagnosed with AFib, and quickly realized it was no laughing matter.” AFib is an irregular heartbeat that puts people with the condition at a five times greater risk for having a blood clot that could cause a stroke. In fact, it accounts for 15 to 20 percent of all strokes in the U.S. Both Palmer and Nealon were told by their doctors that they needed to take a blood thinner to help prevent clots from forming in the future. They also learned that there are treatment options available that do not require regular blood monitoring or carry any known dietary restrictions. They’ve teamed up with Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., to raise awareness about DVT, AFib and treatment options. Videos featuring their own personal experiences are featured on www.Drive4Clots.com, and for every view they receive, Janssen will make a donation to Mended Hearts, a nonprofit
Golf legend Arnold Palmer and actor-writer-comedian Kevin Nealon
find common ground in fight against blood clots organization that offers peer-to-peer support, hope and encouragement to heart disease and blood clot patients, their families and caregivers. “Blood clots do not discriminate based on age, sex, fame or lifestyle,” said Michele Packard-Milam, CAE, of Mended Hearts. “We encourage people to visit the website, learn about DVT/PE and AFib, and help make a difference for the millions of Americans living with or who are at risk for blood clots and stroke.” “Both Arnold and I talked to our doctors about treatment options that were right for us,” said Nealon. “For people with AFib or DVT, talk to your doctor to understand the options and the benefits and risks of treatment, like the risk of bleeding.” Visit http://www.Drive4Clots.com for more information. Steps for decreasing your risk of developing a DVT-PE:
* Wear compression stockings as directed by your doctor * Take all medicines that your doctor prescribes to prevent or treat blood clots * Follow up with your doctor for tests and treatment Symptoms of AFib: * Palpitations (feelings that your heart is skipping a beat, fluttering, or beating too hard or fast) * Shortness of breath * Weakness or problems exercising * Chest pain * Dizziness or fainting * Fatigue (tiredness) * Confusion
* If you’re sitting for an extended period of time, such as a long car or plane ride, make sure to get up and stretch your legs to keep the blood flowing * See your doctor for regular checkups * Don’t smoke, and keep a healthy weight everythinglake.com 15

Sriracha is this year’s ‘go-to’ flavor (BPT) - Favored flavors can come and go like fashion trends, but every now and then a taste comes along that’s so versatile and memorable, it earns a lasting place in culinary tradition. With its zest and spice, sriracha is poised to secure its status as a top flavor for 2015 and beyond.
upside-down 14-ounce squeeze bottle. The flavored ketchup makes it easy to enjoy great sriracha flavor on dishes from burgers, hot dogs and French fries to eggs and chicken!
The sizzling flavor, which traces its roots to a classic Thai hot sauce of the same name, has been on the American culinary scene for about two decades. Between 2008 and 2012, the use of sriracha on restaurant menus increased by 153 percent, making it the fastestgrowing flavor, according to Technomic’s Flavor Consumer Trend Report. You can incorporate this powerful taste into your home menus this spring and summer with a few tips and tricks.
Few flavors or ingredients can measure up to use in virtually every course, but sriracha certainly can. It’s an adaptable ingredient for everything from hors d’oeuvres and appetizers to main courses, side dishes and even desserts. It adds a distinctive zing to any dish and works with sweet flavors as well as it does with savory or spicy profiles.
The year’s hot condiment
While the original sriracha sauce was often incorporated into dishes as an ingredient, contemporary variations have turned it into a versatile condiment. Iconic American ketchup maker Heinz has recently launched Heinz Tomato Ketchup Blended with Sriracha Flavor. The company known for its line of flavored ketchups and the beloved original now offers the sriracha-flavored condiment in the familiar 18 everythinglake.com
Great for every course
Straight sriracha - or the new offering from Heinz - makes a great dipping sauce for a variety of starters, including raw veggies. Blend it with hummus or chicken dip for an exciting variation on favorite dips. Added to deviled eggs, sriracha adds subtle spice and color. For main dishes, sriracha works well with virtually any kind of meat, poultry or seafood. Incorporated into brine, it imparts flavor and moisture to turkey, and enriches the flavor of beef skewers when used as a marinade. Sriracha can even elevate breakfast and not just as a topping for scrambled eggs. It’s easy to find recipes online that incorporate sriracha for everything from muffins to oatmeal. And when used in desserts, the heat of sriracha is the perfect foil for sweet ingredients, creating a multi-layered depth of flavors. Restaurant creativity Convinced you want to explore sriracha but unsure of your creative skills? Draw inspiration from restaurants across the country that have been offering inventive presentations of sriracha for years. From fast-food chains and pizza franchises to fine-dining establishments,

After hearing a lot about this gem of a restaurant, I decided that it was time for a visit. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint. The beautiful two story lakefront restaurant is located on the powdery beach of Lake Weir. The restaurant is open air and well decorated. Award-winning Chef Dave Del Rio has developed a “Florisiana menu, inspired by both Florida and Louisiana cuisine! “ I have taken the cooking styles of Cajun, Creole, Low Country, Barbeque and Spanish and created a menu that appeals to everyone. Once they have tried it they keep coming back for more” stated Chef Del Rio. Chef Del Rio has over twenty years of cooking experience and is well recognized in the culinary world. It was time to try some of this award winning cuisine. I started with the BBQ SHRIMP. This is a New Orleans classic dish, with large seasoned shrimp sautéed in a savory garlic and lemon butter. SHRIMP & GRITS was the next dish that came out. This signature dish was of the chart. The dish featured tender shrimp in a Andouille and white wine cream sauce and topped with crispy applewood bacon and fresh chives. Next, came their CAJUN SWEET FRIED CHICKEN. This was made of boneless chicken breast dipped in their secret batter and fried crispy with the Cajun sweet seasoning. It comes with a side of smashed potatoes and cole slaw. SPANISH CATFISH was next up. The catfish is mild and flaky, lightly fried, topped with hardboiled egg and house made butter and lemon sauce. It is served with Balaya rice. 3CS LITTLE BS MAC & CHEESE followed. This is made of cavatappi noodles, in a homemade three cheese sauce with Andouille sausage, smoked ham and seasoned Tasso topped with diced tomato. The dishes were all delicious. It kept me wanting more and more. I had a real hard time putting the fork down. And this was just part of the menu. I cannot wait to try the rest of the menu. Chef Dave Del Rio has knocked it out of the park with these dishes. Eaton’s Beach Sandbar and Grill offers a great lineup of dishes. They also have a full menu of specialty drinks with their full bars. This gem is a must visit and with its great atmosphere, it will keep you coming back for more. I cannot wait to go back again!

Spring clean your health Think about your gum health: Most people don’t realize that proper oral hygiene can be a good step toward helping to improve their overall health. In addition to brushing your teeth, make sure to take good care of your gums - they’re the foundation of a healthy mouth. Switch up your daily oral care routine by using Colgate Total’s New Gum Health Mouthwash after brushing. It has an advanced germ-fighting formula (versus non-antibacterial mouthwash) that forms a protective shield along the gum line and protects against bacteria that can cause gingivitis. (BPT) - Spring is a time to reevaluate your daily routine and reduce any unnecessary clutter from your life. It is also a time to make positive changes for a happy and healthier lifestyle. Simple changes, such as resetting your sleep pattern, updating your oral care routine and refreshing your diet can result in big changes to your overall well-being. To inspire consumers and their families to get a healthy start to spring, Dr. Nancy Simpkins, Internist and Medical Advisor for the State of New Jersey, shares a few healthful tips on behalf of Colgate Total: Get moving outside: Spring is a great time to be outdoors, so ease back into your exercise routine with daily walks outside. This will help reduce stress and help lower your risk of heart disease and hypertension. Get creative and use apps to track and challenge your friends to walk at least 10,000 steps a day. Reset your sleep pattern: With the arrival of spring come longer days and more daylight. Beat fatigue by setting a goal to keep your waking and bed time consistent - even on weekends. This will help avoid mid-day burn outs while keeping your body in sync with its natural rhythms. 22 everythinglake.com
Travel healthy and be prepared: As you begin to make plans for spring and summer travel, be sure to schedule your family doctor and dentist appointments and address any issues before your trip. Compile a list of medications, unique health issues or history, and physician contact information. This will be important and save time if you end up needing healthcare while you’re away. Refresh your diet: Simple changes to your diet can bring more sustained energy and knock off a few pounds. Swap out snacks like potato chips with banana chips and replace red meat with lean protein from turkey and chicken. Also look to incorporate fresh fruits and vegetables that are in season into your diet. With these small changes to your lifestyle, you can upgrade your health for a better you. For more information on ways to spring clean your health and Colgate Total’s New Gum Health Mouthwash, visit www.ColgateTotal.com.
Give your spring and summer looks something fresh (BPT) - Warm weather has arrived, and with it comes the need for new spring and summer fashions. By now you’ve already gone through your closet and have determined you have absolutely nothing to wear. Nothing to sneeze at: 5 tips for seasonal allergy relief
(BPT) - Spring is upon us, and if you have seasonal allergies, you may be less excited about that than most. After all, what fun is finally freeing your face from that scarf if you’re just going to bury it in a tissue? It’s no fun at all, but allergies don’t have to make you miserable. “The key to surviving spring allergies is knowing what triggers your symptoms,” said allergist James Sublett, MD, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI). “Because there can be millions of pollen particles in the air, finding allergy relief can seem nearly impossible for some. But by knowing what triggers your allergy symptoms, and how to avoid these allergens, you can be on your way to a sneezefree season. Here are tips from ACAAI to help you find relief and enjoy spring. * The feel of cotton. For allergy suffers, not all clothing materials are created equal. Research shows that when synthetic fabrics rub against one another, they create an electrical charge 24 everythinglake.com
that attracts pollen, which, as it turns out, is also electrically charged. Natural fibers such as cotton also breathe better, so they stay drier and less hospitable to moisture-loving mold. * Adjust your workout routine. After months indoors, you can’t wait to exercise outside. However, exercising causes you to breathe more deeply and inhale the pollen that affects your allergy symptoms. If you’re planning a vigorous workout, try to stay indoors and if you’re planning on taking a casual walk, take a nondrowsy antihistamine before you go. Exercise outdoors when pollen counts are at their lowest - before dawn and in the late afternoon or early evening. * Garden smart. Think your spring allergies are going to force you to quit gardening? Think again. Taking an antihistamine about half an hour before you head outside will help. You should also wear gloves and a NIOSH-rated 95 filter mask if your tasks including digging in the dirt, which can stir up pollen. Avoid touching your eyes, and be sure to wash your hands, hair and clothing once you go back indoors.
Nothing to sneeze at: 5 tips for seasonal allergy relief * Take something a little stronger. Over the counter intranasal steroids (nasal sprays) as well as non-drowsy antihistamines and decongestants can be beneficial for those suffering from mild allergies. However, people suffering from more severe allergies will benefit from seeing an allergist. “An allergist will help you develop an action plan with ways to avoid allergy triggers and determine what treatment is best for your individual needs,” says Dr. Sublett. Many severe allergy sufferers find relief in immunotherapy - allergy shots that help the body build resistance to the effects of the allergen. While there is no cure for the more than 50 million Americans suffering from allergies, immunotherapy is known to modify and prevent disease progression.
* Eliminate uninvited guests. You can make your spring allergies more bearable by limiting your exposure to indoor allergens. Vacuum your furniture, leave your shoes by the door, shower frequently, cover your floors with washable throw rugs and use a dehumidifier to limit your mold exposure. All of these steps will help, and look for a good air purifier with a HEPA filter. Spring allergies are a fact of life but you don’t have to let them dictate yours. Employ the tips above, and you’ll be able to enjoy the warmer weather without constantly reaching for a tissue. (BPT) - Spring is a great time to clear out the old, bring in the new and welcome a fresh start. If you’re thinking of skipping your carpet cleaning for a vacuum session, think again. According to the homecare experts at BISSELL, vacuums, even the best ones, simply can’t reach the deeply imbedded dirt within your carpet’s fibers. The carpet cleaning process is engineered to reach the dirt and allergens vacuums leave behind. Incidentally, although carpet cleaning does so much more than vacuuming, the actual process itself is about as easy as vacuuming. 26 everythinglake.com

Have it made in the shade in your backyard this summer
(BPT) - In the midst of the winter we love to think of the summer as this idyllic time when we live barefoot under the sky and everything is perfect and beautiful. Then when the summertime comes, we find ourselves complaining about too much sun, being too hot or bugs - and stay inside in the cool AC to avoid them. The good news is you can create a cool, shady and even bug-free spot for yourself, no matter the size of your outdoor space or your wallet. Natural tree shade Before building a patio or deck canopies, take another look at your yard. Perhaps nature has a solution. If you don’t have a nice tree already, 28 everythinglake.com
consider planting one. Trees provide natural canopy, especially during the summer when they have the most leaves. If that is not an option or you want to enjoy shade while your newly planted tree is growing, take a good look at your backyard and think of how and when you want to use the space, which will help you pick the right solution. Umbrellas A freestanding umbrella, grouped with a table or a chair, will provide shade for alfresco dining or a morning coffee. Also, a bright umbrella can add a splash of color to your

or a schedule set by you. Automatic sensors will also protect your awning during high winds or rain by retracting it.
Pergola
Shade “sails”
For a more traditional and permanent option consider a custom-made pergola. They can provide a real sense of having a room outside that is either open to the sky, air and nature, or fitted with an automated system of fabric or slats. You can also screen the sides of your pergola for added privacy or insect protection.
Tension fabric shade sails can be ready-made or custom designed. Select durable material and make sure that the cloth is pitched to allow rainwater to fall off of it. Water that collects in the middle of the cloth sail can stretch the fabric or damage the system. Design it so you can easily take down the fabric canopy and store it for the winter, especially in climates that get ice and snow.
Think low maintenance materials such as acrylic trim boards, fiberglass columns and woods such as ipe and redwood. This way you can enjoy your pergola rather than spending time cleaning, scraping and painting it. Cabana For a tropical option at a fraction of the cost, go with a cabana that you can pick up at most outdoor furniture stores. Customize your piece with outdoor fabrics in colors or patterns that match the style of your home. Pack it up and store it when the weather turns cold or if you’re expecting a storm.
Covered patio If you already have a covered patio or are adding one to your home, consider integrated, automated screens to keep the bugs out, and/ or to provide additional sun protection. This option gives you a useful space no matter the weather, year round.
Retractable Awning Motorized retractable awnings are a great adaptable option, which allow you to enjoy the sun or shade, whenever you choose, at a press of a button. Maximize energy savings by having your awning react to the weather everythinglake.com 29
Prevent identity theft during tax season (BPT) - It’s the time of year when Americans gather their financial documents and anxiously await news of a tax refund or debt. While many hope to get money back, Time Magazine recently reported that the IRS paid an estimated $5 billion plus in false tax refunds in 2013, and according to Bloomberg Business that number could potentially grow to $21 billion by 2017. “Technology has changed the way we live, offering consumers more convenient ways to take care of common activities like filing taxes,” says Jean Vernor, senior vice president at MetLife. “However, taxpayers should be aware that these technological advances have also made it easier for criminals to commit identity theft. Consumers need to be aware of how and where they divulge personal information and take steps to monitor the data that must be shared.” Identity thieves commonly use a person’s real Social Security number to claim fraudulent wages and file taxes, accepting that individual’s deserved refund. Taxpayers bear responsibility for accuracy of submitted tax returns, regardless of whether the return was prepared by an individual taxpayer or a tax preparer. Unfortunately for many, this means spending a lot of time and money to rectify the situation and minimize the long-term effects caused by identity theft. Avoid the scams Criminals use an array of tactics to steal personal information and file a false tax return. Know the common scams and take steps to avoid them. 30 everythinglake.com
Phone scams: The IRS reports that 2015 has seen a surge in phone scams from criminals impersonating authorities to obtain personal information. Phone scams are often aggressive and may threaten police arrest, deportation and license revocation, among other things, in order to scare victims into handing over information. Do not entertain a conversation with a hostile “IRS representative” and hang up immediately if the call seems suspicious. Phishing: As daily activities continue to move online, cybercriminals are finding ways to take advantage of the Internet. Criminals may send consumers fake emails or to websites that look official, but are really designed to steal personal information. The IRS will not send taxpayers emails about bills, refunds or personal information and following insecure links from these sources may lead to identity theft. Return preparer fraud: The IRS reports that about 60 percent of taxpayers seek assistance when submitting their taxes, but some tax preparers are actually criminals in disguise. Never sign a blank tax form and avoid tax preparers who claim they can deliver a higher refund than others. Choose a well-known tax preparer and ensure that he or she will be available even after the return is filed to answer outstanding questions. Fraud protection To stay safe during tax season, prevention and information monitoring is essential.
