Al Asghar Hello world, Welcome to the first issue of Everything Lake Magazine. This idea started 2 years ago. It started with a thought which grew into a website, which has now progressed into a magazine. Our whole goal is to bring Lake County together. We are going to cover Lake County like it has never been covered. We are going to cover our local cities and their events. You will get to meet the leadership in the county with a monthly Q&A. We are going to review restaurants in the county and bring you what makes them special. You are going to read about events that we have covered and the events that are coming up. We are going to feature pictures that are going to tell the whole story behind an event. Every issue is loaded with stories which is going to make every issue unique and fresh.

The calendar of events in every section of Lake County is going to tell you what is happening there all month long. This will give you a chance to go travel to these places and enjoy them. This is the beginning of our adventure. We have a lot of exciting plans for the magazine and what it is going to bring to our county. Our website, www.everythinglake.com, offers local news, weather, sports, community calendar, local real estate, recent pictures from local events, grocery coupons and if you are an auto buff, all the recent news from the world on your favorite vehicles. Everythinglake. com brings you a totally new experience. And you can catch our magazine online, every page of it. This has been a lot of fun putting this magazine together. I thank you and hope our magazine brings you the joy and resources that you need. Sincerely, Al Asghar Publisher

( left to right holding certificates ) Scott Meeks, Tyler Moore, Jonathan Ricci and Eric Garcia are congratulated for their recycling efforts (from left to right) Pete Myles, Energy Program Manager, Lynda Carter, Administrative Assistant at the Maintenance Department, Diane Lingerfelt, Fiscal Assistant at the Maintenance Department, and their teacher, Dr. Rene Rodrigue.

TAVARES

Students at Tavares High School were recently recognized for their continuing efforts in helping their school recycle paper and cardboard. Students in Dr. Rene Rodrigue’s class have been collecting recycling bins from classrooms to help District staff to implement a recycling program at the high school. Pete Myles, Energy Program Manager, Linda Carter, administrative assistant at the Maintenance Department, and Diane Lingerfelt, fiscal assistant at the Maintenance Department, visited the classroom to hand out certificates and congratulate students for their hard work.

This helps students

focus on job skills,” Dr. Rodrigue, who teaches ESE classes at Tavares High. “These guys jumped on the opportunityand it teaches them independence, social and personal skills and math skills.” Students recognized for their recycling efforts included Scott Meeks, Eric Garcia, Jonathan Ricci and Tyler Moore. “These students directly contributed to the recycling efforts,” Myles said. “It’s not a lot of money earned through recycling, but it helps reduce trash which is just as important. 6 verythinglake.com

Why gas is heading for $5 a gallon Contributed by Derrick Holder

Florida gas prices last hit an average $4 a gallon in July 2008. That spike led many drivers to change their behavior and use less gas, said Jessica Brady of AAA South. Some motorists switched to more fuel-efficient cars. Others turned to public transportation. The Florida Department of Transportation's commuter services program received lots of phone calls then. Wall Street analyst reviewed the major reasons that gas prices have risen in the past quarter and analyzed whether the causes will improve or worsen. We have estimated how much each factor could increase gas prices. Together, those increases would be enough to push gas prices up by another $1.50. Strait of Hormuz About 20 percent of the crude oil produced in the world is shipped through the Strait of Hormuz, and Iran has threatened to shut down shipping traffic through the Strait. Iran has already been isolated as a trade partner by U.S. and EU sanctions. If Iran follows through with its threats, the period the passage is closed could be very brief if the U.S. Navy, which has a carrier group in the region, moves to reopen the lane. A closure of the passage, or any escalation that would make a closure more likely, will drive oil prices higher -- and by extension, gasoline prices. Iran Iran contributes to a second problem in terms of global oil supply well beyond that of its ability to interrupt supply. Because of the embargo against the nation due to nuclear weapons violations, the U.S. has pressured large oil importers such as Japan to act to isolate Iran by cutting their imports. This puts Japan in a position in which it has to tap even tighter global supply. Japan apparently has agreed to cut its Iranian crude imports by 20 percent. But as the world’s third largest oil importer, Japan indeed will have to get its oil somewhere other than Iran -- which will put more pressure on current production. Refiners raising prices Most of the oil refined on the east coast of the U.S. is Brent crude, a type of oil produced from the North Sea. The price of Brent -- more than $124 a barrel -- is almost $16 higher than the price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude, the amount most people read about in the media. But because Brent has replaced WTI as the global price benchmark, U.S. refiners set prices for gasoline and other products as if Brent were the only grade of crude used. That allows refiners with access to cheaper WTI to make larger profits. “Refiners were losing money in November and December. You can only lose money for so long, John Felmy, chief economist for the American Petroleum Institute, recently said. Many large refineries are owned by public companies that do not have much appetite for posting ongoing losses. To avoid losses, refiners will have to increase gasoline prices.

Why gas is heading for 5$ a gallon

Other geopolitical risks Iran does not present the only geopolitical challenge to oil production. In Nigeria, which is the 14th largest producer of oil in the world, Islamic terrorist groups have continued to attack Christian areas of the country. The Nigerian Army has reacted by attacking Islamists. Meanwhile, there are concerns about supply even from Venezuela. Venezuela is the world’s 11th largest producer of crude. The regime there has been fairly stable under the 13-year reign of Hugo Chavez. Analysts recently mentioned Bahrain, Libya, Iraq, Nigeria and Yemen as political flashpoints. “The world faces oil supply risks from a multitude of sources, not only in the Middle East but also in Africa. In our view, not since the late 1970s/early 1980s has there been such a serious threat to oil supply and when oil supplies are tight, the price of oil -- and gasoline -increases. U.S. economic recovery An improved U.S. economy means higher oil prices. U.S. GDP, employment and even housing have all staged unexpected improvements in recent months. Many economists now think a 2012 GDP increase at more than 2 percent is possible. The new White House budget assumes growth of 3 percent by 2013. An extension of unemployment benefits means that hundreds of thousands of American who would have no income, will have at least enough to consume basic goods and services. The argument that Americans now drive less is not a powerful one for gas and oil demand when a healthy economy also means more consumption of oil for business, petrochemicals and jet fuel. Demand for oil-based products across the entire economy will pick up with any recovery. Summer In the U.S., summer vacation driving has historically boosted demand for gasoline. Supply risk In December 2011, OPEC members produced nearly 31 million barrels a day, cutting the cartel’s spare capacity capability from 3.18 million barrels per day to 2.85 million. Saudi Arabia accounts for 2.15 million of those daily barrels of spare capacity. Supply from Canada, the U.S., Australia and Brazil is expected to rise in 2012, though North Sea production is expected to fall. The OECD estimates global demand in 2012 of 90 million barrels a day and global supply essentially equal to projected supply. end While most people agree that reducing dependence on foreign oil, limiting pollution, and minimizing environmental damage are worthy but somewhat abstract goals, the specter of $5-gallon gas represents a direct, personal attack on the wallet. Obviously, one of the best ways to lower your gasoline consumption is to purchase the most fuelefficient car on the market. But since not everyone can dash right out to the dealership and pick up the newest hybrid, it’s good to have a Plan B. For most of us, Plan B is to maximize the efficiency of the car we already own. 8 verythinglake.com

Thrifty Shopping with Madison

Everyone knows how bad the economy is right now with budgeting and cutting costs, but hey, a girl can always figure out how to put an outfit together for less. Clothes might be a luxury item but there is no reason you can’t keep yourself stylishly clothed without breaking your pocketbook. I can give you some tips to create a nice outfit for less than $40, no matter what size or shape you are ...you just have to know where to look. Some places I like to go are Goodwill, thrift stores, Target, Beall’s Outlet just to name a few. Goodwill and thrift stores are good places to find cool, vintage clothing (which is back in style) if you just take the time to browse through the mounds of clothes. I never give up and always find new treasures. They also have the coolest accessories, such as necklaces, bracelets and all kinds of trinkets. The prices are so reasonable.

As for Beall’s Outlet and Target, don’t be embarrassed to check out the clearance racks or the bargain bins. There are some really nice clothes that are discontinued or discounted down to next to nothing. So have fun and happy shopping!

This Month: Sheriff

Gary S. Borders Lake County Sheriff’s Department Born in Kentucky, Home of the Wildcats, he definitely bleeds blue. Moved to Florida at 18 to help his brother with his carpet cleaning business in Kississimee. Sheriff Borders joined the Osceola Department of Corrections in 1980 for eight and one-half years. He started in Lake County Jail in 1989.

& &

What made you want to be sheriff?

A A A

“I was happy as Chief Deputy but after Sheriff Daniels was killed in an unfortunate accident, I was sworn in by Govenor Jeb Bush in November 2006. I have been in law enforcement 32 years, over 23 years in Lake County”.

What was your greatest accomplishment? “First law enforcement agency to get an accredidation in 2007, re-accredited 2010. First time jail was accredited was 2006. Has received it successfully for 3 years since cyber-crime was established in 2007. Set up stings to catch sexual predators in June 2011. Caught 32 predators in 4 days”.

Where do you see law enforcement in four years? “To do more with less manpower, continue to do a good job. Want to establish new Emergency Operations Center in 2013. All Emergency Operation such as fire, EMS, etc. under one roof. Promise to meet the standards”.

Tell me about the D.A.R.E. Program

A A

“D.A.R.E. is taught to all fifth graders, it reaches out to children to teach them about dealing with pressure situations like alcohol, tobacco and drugs. Confiscated drug money funds the program. We have 6 D.A.R.E Officers”.

How are you dealing with the “Meth” Labs in Lake County? “Florida led in “Meth” Labs in 2010. We developed a Proactive Drug Enforcement which lead to a massive clean-up. We went into communities, taught people what to look for, getting them more involved. Mostly in rural settings, the labs put out a strong ammonia smell. The money confiscated goes to the Boy Scouts of America and helping with children’s education”. verythinglake.com

Boating Waterways lake c unty’s

...water, water everywhere!

Appropriately named, after more than 1000 bodies of water, Lake County is the next thing to paradise for boaters, anglers, waterskiiers and fresh water enthusiasts. With its many nationally know titles everyone has high expectations when visiting these unique quaint towns. The beautiful and scenic Harris Chain of Lakes is nine interconnected waterways containing acres of water. It is part of the Florida Ocklawaha Basin which drains Central Florida into the St. John’s River entering the Atlantic Ocean in Jacksonville. These vast lakes are home to millions of animals, fish, and birds of all descriptions. Local bass fishing tournaments are held on a monthly basis and the Harris Chain is now a popular stop on the ESPN B.A.S.S. Tournament trail with its great fishing toured on many outdoor television shows. In 2005 Lake Harris made the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commision (FWC) Top Ten Sunfish fishing sites. Although around 1990, B.A.S.S. held a disastrous national tournament on the chain, setting a record for the lowest average catch rate of any national tournament. This tournament created ripples throughout bass fishing circles, complaining of over enthusiastic weed spraying, pollution from Lake Apopka, unknown viruses, and a dozen other causes. Whater the case, it was clear that bass fishing has significantly declined from previous levels. One of the major contributions to the decline was considered to be the hydrilla, which became a major problem by 1987. Unfortunately, state and water managers choose to use a new chemical tool to kill the hyrilla, as it has just been developed the long term effects were not all known. When they used it the hydrilla died, along with most of the native plant such as lily pads, proper and eel grass. Luckily over 30 years later the lakes are in a much better state and the bass fishing has returned, thanks to organizations such as the St. Johns Water Management District (SJRWMD). Other organizations such as Harris Chain of Lakes Restoration and Lake County Water authorities work hard to keep these lakes pristine and clean for all to enjoy.

12

verythinglake.com

Other notable chains such as the Clermont Chain which is 15 interconnected lakes ranging 20 acres to 3632 in size. Palatlakana River is the most notable for fishing with Channel Catfish ranging in size up to 20lbs. Holly Chain, located in North Umitilla is an unusual one, due to the fact that it contours. Meaning its deepest parts are on the edges with a ridge rising in the center and the deepest parts on either edge. Lake county has over 15 Marinas and hundreds of public access points, which is just the beginning for boating excursions on these family oriented waters. Hickory point Recreation facilities has 12 boat ramps with access to Harris Chain, an amazing location for boating, kayaking and canoeing. Guided tours are available in multiple cities to tour the chains and all they offer. These tours range in form of walking tours on the boardwalks, boating, and flying above these gorgeous bodies of water. Amidst the 17 percent of Lake County that is covered in water ready to explore you will never tire of finding out whats around the next corner! With all of these lakes you would imagine that the springs would go completely unnoticed, but that is far from true. Juniper Springs offers white sandy bottoms and pretty blue colored waters. Its a seven mile run that offers all kinds of wildlife to enjoy, such as alligators, otters, turtles, and various types of birds. The springs stay at a refreshing 72 degrees year round and offer abundant opportunities for families looking to relax or serious kayakers looking for an adventurous day including twists, turns, dead falls, and overhanging branches. The current travels at approximately two miles an hour in which most pathways lead back to the main channel.

What’s up with our leaders of tomoow? “Today we live in a world that makes us believe that we have to blend in with the crowd. We think that we have to look a certain way, or weigh a certain weight or have certain clothes, but we don’t. My personal goal every morning when I wake up is to be ME. I don’t let anyone change me or tell me who to be. I strive to be unique in every way and conquer the world’s ideas of beauty and wealth. I play trombone in the Eustis High School band. I love to read. I strive to be excellent in school and to be myself.”

Jensen Clayton

15, Sophomore, Eustis High School

“So...it’s my freshman year in high school and let me tell you it’s way better that people made it sound. Coming from Middle School it is a whole new change. Different faces, new teachers, most of all it’s a fresh start. Hint the word...FRESHMAN! My favorite part of high school is the sports. I love the football games and in high school there is a wider variety. Being an athlete myself, most of my days are occupied with cheerleading and track practice. It is definitely not easy juggling school work and keeping good grades. School work is my main priority though.. Having a total of eight classes from day to day means alot more work than Middle School. At Tavares High, we have what we call an A,B schedule, totally different classes every other day. Now you have a little glimpse of what high school life is like.”

Amber Hornsby

14, Freshman, Tavares High School

“I attend High School. half of the day then go to the library and do Florida Virtual School. After school I practice track. I am best at running . The mile, the two mile and the 400 meter. I am a good kid in school, I try my best with all of my assignments and get straight B’s. After I graduate from high school, I plan on attending either Duke, Stetson or Rollins College for a waterskiing scholarship. I want to follow in my father’s footsteps and go into waterskiing competitively. After I greaduate I want to get married and have children. Family is very important to me. I am excited to reach my goals for the future!”

Taylor Gronlund

16, Junior, Umatilla High School

I am the oldest out of three sisters and one brother and I’ll have another baby brother in just a few months! I was born in Alabama but moved to Sorrento/Mt. Dora since I was five. I have loved music ever since I was little so it was no surprise when I joined band in middle school and have been a “band nerd” ever since. In high school, I have had the opportunity to be in marching band, concert band, and jazz band. I have learned to play the french horn, mellephone, trumpet, and piano. High school has been an AWESOME adventure. To me, your high school years are the most critical years of your life, and they can either be the worst years of your life, or the best years. I would consider my high school years so far a success. High school can only be what you put into it, and i’m planning on giving it all I got!

Students at Sawgrass Bay Elem. know how to spell w-i-n-n-e-r

Sawgrass Bay’s spelling champ Jacob High and first runner-up Alyssa Howe chat with Principal Dr. Julio Valle, Jr.

Students at Sawgrass Bay Elementary School recently showed spelling expertise in the annual school spelling bee. Forty-seven students in grades 1st-5th proudly stood as their class champion to compete in the school-wide competition on Feb. 15. Families and students cheered as the student spelled words like shawl, heroic, lightning and genius. In the end, second grader Jacob High was this year’s top speller with the word perturb. Placing as first runner-up was second grader Alyssa Howe. “We have been practicing as a class for this year’s spelling bee,” said Deborah Thurman, Jacob’s teacher. “Jacob is a wonderful speller and avid reader. Our whole class is so proud of his accomplishment.” As the school’s spelling bee champion, Jacob received a one-year subscription to Encyclopedia online and an opportunity to take an online foreign language course through Powerspeak12, all courtesy of the Scripps National Spelling Bee program. Jacob will also move onto the next level of competition and represent Sawgrass Bay Elementary School at the Annual Lake County Schools’ Spelling Bee at 9:30 a.m. on March 6 at the Eustis Community Center, located at 601 Northshore Drive.

Special Olympics Summer Games Held at Tavares High The Lake County Special Olympics Summer Games kicked-off at Tavares High, located at 603 N. New Hampshire Ave., at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, March 3. The event began with opening ceremonies and was followed by the competition for athletes in track & field and soccer skills. The public was in attendance to support their local athletes. Last year’s event was remarkably successful as it featured the most athletes and schools ever to participate, and the largest contingency of volunteers to lend a hand. Schools sending athletes to the 2011 summer games included Carver Middle, Lake Hills School, Minneola Elementary, Oak Park Middle, Sorrento Elementary, Tavares High, Tavares Middle, Treadway Elementary, Triangle Elementary and Windy Hill Middle. Cover Artist Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1954. Has resided in Florida for12 years. His love for nature, the change of seasons, the early morning & evening light, gives Bruce inspiration for his subject matter. He loves to push the envelope when it comes to light and

shadow and aerial perspective. On canvas Bruce wants the viewer to experience and feel the scene through the artists eye. Each painting is treated as an individual with a complete change of color palette. He strives to give his landscapes the depth that exists in real time. In doing so, it has taken Bruce years to accomplish this when working with the acrylic medium. Instead of hours to create a painting he spend

weeks, even months on each painting. It’s this way he enjoys painting. Not only is the time committed to each piece important, but equally important is what he paints on. Bruce uses double primed, Belgium or Russian linen. He believes in longevity or his artwork, which gives the buyer an investment that can be handed down from generation to generation. www.acrylicsbyben.com

110th Annual

GeorgeFest is a three-day event that celebrates the birth of our nation’s first president, George Washington. It is a community festival that is generally held during the last week of February. The annual event allows for Americans to show their patriotism and celebrate our nation’s history. In Florida, Eustis has the second longest running GeorgeFest right after Laredo, Texas. With its first festival held on February 22, 1902, GeorgeFest continues to depict our history through its parades, games, contests, rides, andlive bands. What once began as a simple boat parade now blossomed into a festival. Its firework display is what usually kicks off this event. The continual sucess of GeorgeFest is due to various sponsorships from local businesses, fund raisers, and citizens. Photos courtesy of Richard Stayton
