meet the publisher Al Asghar The dog days of summer are upon us. Summer vacation is winding down this month for all our students in Lake County. This issue is themed around them going back to school. I want to take the time and thank Eustis High School for letting us use a classroom for our cover photo. I also want to thank the kids that came out and helped us with the shoot. We have a special event planned for August. With the help of The Green K9 and Frugals, who are co hosting this event with Everythinglake magazine, I am proud to announce a dog fashion show that is being put together for August 11th at 6:30 pm at the Green K9’s new location. All the dog models are coming in from different dog shelters from around Lake County. The event is to help support the shelters and find these animals a good home. So come out and enjoy yourself. I want to thank everyone for their great feedback and comments. Your input is what makes us better. See you all next month.

Sincerely,

senior spotlight Meet Penny. She has been hand-gliding in the Outerbanks, parasailing in the Panhandle, taken a dip with some friendly dolphins, sports a snazzy navel piercing, has a gecko tattooed on the top of her foot and could run circles around most people half her age. Oh yeah, she’s 72. And most of this stuff she did in her late sixties. She’s definitely not your average “granny”. Originally from Stevenspoint, Wisconsin, Penny left her home state after marrying Don Dieckman, her loving husband of 42 years. They have lived in Texas, Nebraska, the Bay area of California and Atlanta before finally retiring to Lake Yale in Leesburg, Florida. They live 8 months of the year here and the other 4 they travel around the US to see their 5 children who all live in different states, so there is always someplace to go. “We just pack up the motorhome and off we go with our two cats, Daisy and Lily in tow. There is never a dull moment”. Penny is quite the talented artist and one of her favorite things to use for her canvas are rocks. Yes rocks. She finds them in river beds, the Chatahoochee River being her favorite place to get them. She especially likes the river rocks because they are smooth from years of water running over them. She lets the shape of the rock determine what image she will paint. She has been painting rocks for five years and her subject matter is quite diverse. She paints flowers, animals (especially cats, she just loves cats), school buses, faces, she just lets the inspiration and imagination flow. She uses acrylic paint because the work well with the rocks and they dry fast. She recently starting taking drawing classes at LSCC and is finding a new love...colored pencils. She has taken figure drawing and a portrait class and discovered a hidden creativity. “I never knew colored pencils could be so fun or the amazing art that I could create. I am having a blast”. Although Penny has already marked quite a few things off her “bucket list”, her next item of interest is parachut ing. This lady has no fear, so if you see a large shape fly over your head, watch out, it may just be Penny dropping in.

College Prep... Is Your Junior Ready? By Andrew Stratton Often, the thought of college prep is often thought of as something that high school seniors need to consider and plan for, not something that juniors need to worry about at least at this point. However, the fact is, the sooner you start thinking about school the better off you will be in planning for your future. The good news is that there are many opportunities for younger students to get started planning for their futures than you may think. What Juniors Can Do When it comes to college prep, get your junior in high school started by focusing on the needs of that child. Here are some things to take into consideration. Find out what the student wants to do when he or she graduates. In many cases, seniors struggle to choose a college to go to because they do not know what they want to do or be after school. At the junior level, you can start talking to your child about his or her future by asking about thoughts or desires moving forward. There are also tests and courses your teen can take to further investigate these needs and desires. Next, consider the PSAT, ACT and SAT. Each of these tests are college entrance exams and juniors are likely to be facing them. The good news is that you want your college student to participate in the process without any stress involved. You want to know when he or she is getting the best skills possible. College prep can also help you to make decisions about when to have the student take these tests. Consider budgetary information now. Who will pay for your child's secondary education? Will he or she need loans? If so, fill out the FAFSA now and begin to consider financial needs moving forward. This includes student loans, private loans or other methods of paying for school. By tackling the money question now, you can be better prepared for what lies ahead and can plan accordingly. College prep professionals can offer you information and tools to help your student to get the type of education he or she needs and wants to have. These organizations can help your child to get into the school he wants to, and help your child to explore the options out there. Even as a junior in high school, your student needs to consider the benefits of getting this professional help especially if their options are limited. For many people, the need to go to school is critical. Going to college is something most students need to do in order to enter into the positions they hope to have. However, it is always necessary to get into the right school and to work hard at qualifying for scholarships even as a junior in high school. By the time your teen is a senior in high school , he or she will already have made key decisions and impressions on those who need needs to in order to get into the college he or she wants.

Cool folders and pencil cases are just a few of the many supplies to decide on. Every year shoppers have a larger selection to chose from. The cover designs are getting more creative and exciting. New designers are making matching sets with their designs. Back to School Bullying at School: Empower Yourself to Protect Your Child Against School Bullying By Barry Kareful Are you capable of protecting and supporting your child when, not if, they are targeted by bullying at school? School bullying shows no clear signs of decreasing anytime soon. Certainly as parents we all realize bullying at school is on the rise. School bullying statistics for some countries of the world are now citing figures as high as 25%, or one in four children attending school are either bully victims, are engaged in bullying themselves, or are both! As a parent do you even know what signs or symptoms to look for when dealing with bullying at school or how to support a victim of school bullying? 7 Key Indicators Of Bullying At School 1. Child is afraid to go to school. 2. Child often feels ill on school mornings. 3. Child is skipping school or classes. 4. Grades in school suddenly dropping. 5. Trouble sleeping or nightmares. 6. Becoming a "loner" and avoiding social activities. 7. Talking openly about suicide or attempting it. Obviously there are more than just 7 indicators of this type of bullying and common sense tells us these are just guidelines. As caring parents, who know our children, we always must be on the alert for unnatural behaviors in our children that would give us clues that something is seriously wrong. Positive Support For Victims Of School Bullying...As difficult as it may be at the time (and yes, I have been there too, as both a parent and an educator), you must put the needs of the victim first! 1. Comfort the child. Let them know that you are there for them, you care for them, and you will keep them safe. 2. Address any safety concerns. Take any necessary steps to ensure your child is kept safe, including contacting the school and enlisting help from teachers and support staff. 3. Discuss effective bullying responses with your child to help them deal with face to face situations with the bully. These responses may differ depending on whether you are dealing with bullying at the middle school or bullying in high school. Negative Support For Victims Of School Bullying...Whether your child is a victim of bullying at the middle school or bullying in high school, the following "pitfalls" or negative support must be avoided. 1. Never try and justify the bully's behavior! Let you child know that any bullying is wrong and no one deserves to be bullied! 2. Very important that you resist the urge to try and solve the problem for your child, unless they are in serious physical danger, as this tells the bully that your child is indeed "helpless". 3. Telling the child to simply avoid the bully will not solve the problem and generally only works for a short time. 4. Never, never tell your child to "fight back". Most bullies are bigger and stronger, and are looking for an excuse to physically punish their victim and impress their peer group. 5. Don't confront the bully or the bully's parents alone. Their reactions may be hostile rather than sympathetic, which could make things even worse for both you and your child. If a meeting is necessary, enlist the help of a third party such as the school administration or teacher to mediate the meeting and keep things under control. Parents learning how to recognize the signs of bullying at school, and supporting a child victimized by school bullying, are important first steps, but not the end of the problem. Teaching the targeted child effective ways to empower themselves to deal with bullying at the middle school, or bullying in high school , is giving them a vital personal skill set necessary to cope with this worsening social problem in our school system.

Lake County Virtual School hosts first commencement While the commencement ceremony for the first class of graduates from Lake County Virtual School was no different than a traditional high school, how the six students went about receiving their high school diplomas was very much atypical. Studying from home while taking online classes six students — Anthony Ashington-Pickett, Nicholas Beaver, Alyssa Braddock, Mariela Gaytan, Alexander Wagner and Annie Yates — earned their high school diplomas in the inaugural graduating class of Lake County Virtual School. In all, nine students graduated from the newly formed virtual school by Lake County Schools in the 2011-2012 school year. “We’re really excited, proud and happy for all of our students that are working so hard in a virtual world to be here today,” said Tessie Osteen, Lake County Virtual Manager. Keynote speaker for the commencement program was Dr. Susan Moxley, Superintendent of Lake County Schools. “We are very proud of our seniors that are represented here.” Dr. Moxley said. “Our students are real trailblazers because they have ventured out in a new arena into a different educational program that is new on the horizon. It takes a lot of dedication and hard work to do that.”

Destiny’s Journey by Stephen Michael Natale As luck, or love would have it, this story begins on Valentine’s Day. Perched quietly on a bar stool in my friend’s bar interpreting all the day’s problems as presented by Fox News, my wife and son, as expected charged in and yanked me away from the nice cold bottle of beer I was sipping to solve the day’s most pressing situation. Unfortunately my friend’s bar is located right next door to a Petland. The issue at hand appeared to be Sheltie or YorkiePoo. Now this is an “issue” I had been trying to avoid for months since losing our last dog to “mysterious” circumstances. At this point, on Valentine’s Day, with two sets of shining eyes staring at me, the only decision making paradigm left to me was big or small. The choice, as if I really had one, was the $1300.00, “But Dad she’s on sale for only $850.00”, Yorkie-Poo. So, as I tried to rationalize the expense, mainly to myself, since the neither the boy, nor my beautiful wife cared, Nicolette came into our home. Nicolette, or Nico as she has come to be called, was a 15-week old blond little fluff ball, part puppy and part baby Wookiee. Well Nico learned how not to damage the carpets too much and provided ample happiness enough for the boy to forget all the promises of care and for my wife to pick up the slack without complaint. So after spending her first 15 weeks in a cage Nico’s next 40 were spent earning a home and a family. Almost exactly one year from Nico’s acquisition, as my wife was leaving for work her cell phone rang. After a rather rushed and harried hello she heard, “Good Morning ma’am, do you know where your dog is?” With Nico bouncing good-byes at her feet the call left my wife somewhat confused as to why the Sumter County Animal Control unit was calling her. “Ma’am are you sure? We have your dog here in Lake Panasoffkee.”

is here.”

Laughingly my wife explained to the officer the improbabilities of a dog of Nico’s stature being capable of traveling twentysix miles in just a few seconds, especially since teleportation has yet to be metaphysically conceived and the part for Underdog had already been cast. Still the officer insisted, “Ma’am we scanned your dog and I assure you, she

After a few minutes of non-sarcastic conversation it was obvious there was some type of mistake, most likely a paperwork error somewhere. Later that morning my wife told me about the odd phone call and now that curiosity had set in she was going to take Nico to get her chip scanned. The chip, a product of AVID (American Veterinary Identification Devices) is a permanent radio-frequency identification (RFID) microchip implanted just under the skin to permanently identify a particular animal. The chips are used to track lost, stolen, or just plain missing pets. The procedure is as simple as scanning your groceries and in Nico’s case the chip in her shoulder told us that she indeed, was not her. The dog in the animal control office however was “Nico.” Obviously the chips, numbers, documentation and their registrations had gotten all mixed up. A fact we discoveverythinglake.com

pups & friends ered the deeper we got into investigating what happened. We started digging through all the Petland documents and discovered we had paperwork from two different puppies that had been in the same cage at the store. One was identified as a Black and Tan, the other, the blonde, was Nico. My wife called the animal control facility and explained what we found and supplied the chip number in Nico’s shoulder for them to run an ID check. AVID would not reveal owner information to us. The Animal Control Officers did follow through in tracing the chip number and found the identity of the little Black and Tan’s owners. They made multiple phone calls and left messages, but to no avail. They told my wife they could only hold the Black and Tan for seven days but then….. Well the more we talked about it the more curious we got and began investigating further. By this time the Petland we purchased Nico from was out of business so we couldn’t get information from their records. Our vet told us Petland uses distributors like the Hunte Corporation to obtain puppies, which we confirmed in our purchase documents. So we contacted Hunte and in speaking with them they confirmed the above. Hunte either would not or could not track “our puppies” even with the AVID numbers, invoices, etcetera. They would however speak in generalities, these generalities led us to the conclusions and decisions that follow. The Hunte spokesperson told my wife the AVID microchips implanted may not be used in sequential order, puppies are usually purchased from breeders in litters and to us what will seem most important; puppies are either chipped by the breeders or in litters soon upon arrival. We already had enough proof to surmise that Nico and the Black & Tan were at the very least cage mates in the store, but we began to suspect much more. My wife made another call to Sumter County Animal Control inquiring into the Black and Tan’s status, which remained unclaimed, and with only a day left, the Governor had not called with a stay. By Friday morning, the Black and Tan’s last day, my wife, Ellyn, couldn’t wait any longer to confirm our suspicions. She called the shelter informing them she was coming to see the little stray. Now, I knew at this point there was no way the state was going to be allowed to enforce over population controls on this little enigma. I began to adjust myself to the future “surprise” announcement of another pet in the house; “another” being an addition to the string of cockatiels, a 17 year-old contender for the world’s most ugly cat and Nico. Ellyn and our friend BK loaded Nico in the car and made the trip from our Lake County home to the Sumter County animal shelter to see the Black and Tan. Ellyn asked BK to come along in an effort to temper what had become biased feelings with an honest assessment, (like that was gonna change anything). Upon arrival they were met by an attendant and according to that attendant the stray looked nothing like Nico. “First of all this animal is a male, it’s gray and definitely “not” a designer dog.” But my wife insisted and they were all introduced the scruffiest little animal in the place, however the attendant was right about one thing, it was a dog. The gray was just the grime from being a stray for what appeared to be weeks, the dog was female and her little face, according to all, sans the wookie hair-doo, looked exactly like Nico. Fifty-eight dollars later and they were all traveling back to Lake County where I met them at a riverside hideaway to be introduced our new little “surprise” addition. I had to admit she was the cutest little thing, immediately per-

pups & friends sonable, a little grubby, but nothing a bath and a good diet couldn’t cure. Ultimately, given the circumstances of her journey to us, her name became Destiny. We have been told that females don’t usually hit it off to well and we should be prepared for some angst, wrong. Within twenty minutes of their arrival both dogs were sleeping in my wife’s lap, intertwined so tightly you couldn’t tell whose legs were whose. We noticed many similarities between the two. Their facial features, tooth structures, body frames were exactly the same, right down to one white claw on the left rear paw. But mostly, these two were the sweetest, most good-natured little animals that held an obvious affection for us and for each other. From the interaction with each other it was clear they knew each other, remembered each other, and not, we were sure, just as cage mates, they must be sisters. We are still attempting to confirm this and without a DNA test probably impossible. I was able to track Destiny’s breeder in Missouri where Destiny’s journey began. The Breeder was able to confirm the litter of six Destiny was born to also had a female golden and that the entire litter was sold to Hunte on December 16th, however this litter was 50% Yorkshire Terrier & 50% Bichon Frise. It appears our Petland Yorkie-Poos are instead Yo-Chons or Yorkons depending on which breed resource is applied. Given troubles at Petland and Hunte of late the trail has gone cold. Whether “Poos” or “Kons” it really doesn’t matter, as long as I don’t think about the over inflated price tag supported by the blatant lie of an F-1 rated AKC recognized Yorkie –Poo designer puppy. I have sent pictures to the breeder for her opinion, what do you think? No matter what the DNA reveals we are sure enough, Nico and Destiny are sisters and at home together again.

Sinbad’s Bar & Grill Located on the shore of Lake Eustis on 441 in Tavares is Sinbad’s Bar & Grill, a gem of a place with a breath-taking view of Lake Eustis. I had heard from a lot of people that they have the best wings in Central Florida. The Orlando Sentinel had also rated them the Best Wings in Central Florida, sooo...... I had to try for myself. I was greeted by owner, Sam Burroughs. “I have been at this location for 25 years” explained Sam. “We are a family run business. My wife and all my kids have worked here.”

restaurant spotlight As I looked around the place, I noticed that the ceiling tiles were personalized by patrons. “Years ago, I needed a new roof and I was short of money. I sold each ceiling tile for $2 and let my customers write their message on them. Now the same customers bring their friends and family and show them their tile” said Sam. Sinbad’s offers an All-American menu. They have wings with seven different sauces, burgers cooked to order, steaks and seafood. “All our sauces are homemade. They are my own special recipes” stated Sam. I tried the wings in two different sauces (hot and mild). The wings were crispy, perfectly cooked, not greasy at all and the sauces were the bomb. The wings would be perfect with an ice cold beer. Now I know why they are the best wings in Central Florida. I also tried the Smoked Pork tenderloin sandwich. Again, the BBQ sauce was homemade by Sam. Tender, moist and totally delicious. The Peel and Eat Shrimp Basket was another winner that I had an opportunity to try. The shrimp was cooked perfect. The restaurant also offers a Char-broil island grill, where you are the chef. You can cook your own seafood and steaks just the way you like them. The menu ranges from $5.95 to $13.95. There is a 20 wing and large pitcher of beer special on the weekends for $19.95. The restaurant is open Monday thru Saturday 11am to 9pm and on Sunday from Noon to 6pm. I was really impressed with this gem on Lake Eustis. I will definitely be back for more and next time I will have an ice cold beer with my wings...Yummy!

Unique Boxing Inc. a local boxing and fitness gym, with the help of the some of the downtown business, held it’s first sanctioned amateur boxing event at Wooton Park in Tavares on Saturday June 30th. There were approximately one hundred and fifty entrants from all over the state of Florida. Even as far away as Tallahassee weighing in to take a chance in the ring for a title win and belt. The event started at 4 p.m. with the introductions of the dignitaries including Mayor Robert Wolfe and Vice Mayor Bob Grenier. Special guest were two time world champion Heavyweight boxer Pinklon Thomas and Globel Boxing Union Middleweight Champion Laura “Lady Ram” Ramsey . Pinklon Thomas now retired has a foundation, Project P.I.N.K (Pride in Neighborhood Kids) and is a motivational speaker. Laura Ramsey is a trainer and owner of Polk County Boxing Gym. In 2001 she formed Lake Wales Boxing Team to help neighborhood teens focus their attention on something constructive. After the initial weigh in the USA Boxing officials pair the fighters based on age, weight and experience. These classifications also determine the time length of each round and how many rounds per bout. The entrant is also checked out medically by a physician to insure the health of each participate. Before they enter the ring the boxer is also checked out by officials to make sure they wearing the proper apparel and safety gear. A referee is in the ring at all times during a bout to insure the safety of the participants and make sure the rules are strictly followed in accordance with USA Boxing Rules. The final tally of bouts for the event is twenty . Each bout is jugged by several USA Boxing officials. There are several ways of winning a bout. A few examples are: The judges decide the winner by a point system to decide which boxer wins each round. Whoever has the most points wins. If a boxer, in the opinion of the referee, is unfit to continue because of injury or other physical reasons, the bout shall be stopped and the opponent declared the winner. This is called T.K.O (Technical Knock Out) And yes, there were a couple of those at this event. At the end of each bout, the boxers met in the middle of the ring. A winner is declared by the Ring Announcer and the referee holds up the winners arm. At this event the prize is a trophy belt that is given to the winner by his opponent and the opponent receives a medal by the winner, both exchanging congratulations. Unique Boxing is owned an operated by Ron and Cindy Lopez. Both are Florida Association Boxing Officials. They started their gym five years ago and it’s in a new location at 13041 Lane Park Cutoff Rd., Tavares. Ron and Cindy wanted a place not only to offer boxing and fitness, but also have a structured haven for kids and young adults, teaching them discipline and rule. Some of the gym rules are: respect for adults, keep good grades, no fighting outside the ring. Etc… Their mission statement is “Keep kids of the streets” . Also to encourage sportsmen’s like conduct, self worth and trying to lead them on the right path of life. They have had a couple of youths that were going down a bad path. Not only did they get them turned around, they even proudly served in our armed forces. Some even went on to be boxing champions. You can go to their gym and see photos proudly displayed on the walls.
