It’s all about the details - how to accessorize your home exterior (BPT) - When considering exterior home improvements during spring and summer, many homeowners go for updates such as the replacement of siding or windows. These projects can make the home look great while boosting energy efficiency, but no matter how much homeowners invest in siding or windows, it will only look as good as the trim used to complete the job. Trim products are designed to be used around windows, doors, eaves and gables, and for application on your home’s corners and porch columns. Many installers opt for basic corner posts, J-channels and finishing accessories, which are functional, but also detract from the home’s overall style. Going beyond the basics is very affordable and can make a big difference in your investment. “One mistake that homeowners and contractors often make in an exterior remodel is finishing a beautiful window and siding replacement with basic or inexpensive trimwork,” says Steve Moore, architect with BSB Design. “Working with your contractor to accessorize with high-quality, low-maintenance trim around windows, doors and the roofline helps complete the look and enhance architectural features. Trim and mouldings are the glue that ties the look together.” Whether you prefer a modern, traditional, rustic or Victorian style, there are many trim options on today’s market to consider, including products made of wood, aluminum, fiber cement, engineered wood and vinyl, each with their own unique features. But if you want the look of real wood without the maintenance or having to replace in a few years, turn to building products manufacturers like Ply Gem that now offer cellular PVC trim

with a 30-year warranty. Features of this material typically include a wood grain or smooth finish option, natural wood dimensions and resistance to rotting, cracking and splitting. Due to the superior material, paint will also adhere better and stay bright longer than painted wood.

To help provide inspiration, design guides are available for recommendations on how to make the most of cellular PVC trim and other exterior products with various architectural styles. Once you have a style, consider ways to accessorize your home with trim:

Cellular PVC trim and moulding products are easy for your contractor to install, and are engineered to work with virtually any siding type, including vinyl siding, stone veneer, brick, fiber cement and stucco.

• Accent arched windows on Georgian or French architectural styles

“Since trim is incredibly visible, it should be chosen with the same care as siding,” says Jerry Blais, vice president of marketing for Ply Gem siding group. “The use of low-maintenance products like cellular PVC trim and mouldings really give homeowners a durable and versatile option for making the home exterior stand out from the crowd. The product can also be painted to complement other exterior materials such as windows, vinyl siding, stone veneer, shutters and more to create a cohesive design.”

• Differentiate with decorative gable details for home styles such as folk, shingle, Victorian or craftsman • Add wide trim with a keystone to carry out a Tuscan look when combined with arched windows and stucco siding • Use cellular PVC sheet in wide areas, such as wainscoting, on bay windows or under eaves for a gingerbread look • Detail porch columns with preformed post wraps

To achieve that cohesive exterior home design, Ply Gem and BSB Design recommend first determining the type of architectural style you are trying to achieve, traditional or modern. This will help narrow the options for not only trim style, but also window grille patterns, color, siding type and accessories like shutters. everythinglake.com

How to find the right vet for your pet (BPT) - Pet owners have many responsibilities, and keeping your pet healthy with veterinary care is a significant one. To help make sure your pet receives high quality medical care, several veterinarians offer advice on how to find the right vet for your pet.

ASK FOR RECOMMENDATIONS “A good way to begin your search for a high quality veterinary practice is to ask for recommendations from friends and family,” says Dr. Meredith Hope, fulltime Veterinary Technology instructor -at Brown Mackie College - Louisville. “Word of mouth from people with experience as a client can be valuable. You can also read online reviews and look at veterinary websites for information on specific doctors and practices.” Dr. Barry Kellogg, senior veterinary advisor of the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association, -suggests paring down your list of options by looking for a practice that is certified by American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). This independent organization has developed accreditation standards to measure excellence in veterinary medicine. “AAHA represents the gold standard in quality,” Kellogg says. “Certification is voluntary and shows that a practice goes above and beyond to ensure certain standards are met both for the doctors and the facility.”

displayed on an office wall in the form of a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree.

ACCESSIBILITY MATTERS

VISIT THE PRACTICE “Practices grow by developing relationships that show you are valued as a client,” says Hope. The temperament and qualifications of the overall staff say a lot about the practice. “Staff members trained as registered veterinary technicians (RVTs) are a good sign of quality care,” continues Hope. “The training provides clinical competence and technical knowledge.” This can go a long way in easing your mind about the people who will play a major role in your pet’s care.

DOCTOR CREDENTIALS One of the first things many people notice about the veterinarian is his or her bedside manner. Are you comfortable talking to and listening to this person? Keep in mind you are looking for a medical expert; you want to weigh more than personality. “How do you know what the vet knows?” asks Kellogg. “Technical knowledge and educational status aren’t easy to judge from the outside. Your decision should come from a blend of interpersonal relationship and educational knowledge and credentials.” Credentials are typically

In addition to office visits, how accessible is the veterinarian or a professionally trained staff member to answer your questions on the phone? “If a practice is too busy to respond, you may want to rethink your decision,” says Kellogg. “You want access to guidance when you have a question about your pet. As a client, you deserve personal service and attention. Some practices now use email as a forum to answer questions.”

OVERNIGHT ESSENTIALS In case your pet ever requires surgery and an overnight stay at the veterinarian’s office, it’s a good idea to ask up front about overnight care. “Some practices have an attendant on site throughout the night,” Hope says. “Others may assign a staff member to check in periodically. If there is no night staff, many will transfer the patient to a local ER veterinary clinic for overnight monitoring.” Each pet owner must decide what seems right for each pet. “Animals need some kind of supervision, even after a simple spay procedure,” says Kellogg. “The larger multi-doctor practices may be more available to staff the facility at night, sharing off-hour coverage.”

NO ONE KNOWS YOUR PET BETTER THAN YOU DO “Veterinary care involves give and take between you, the doctor and the staff. Most pet owners want to make their own decisions about their pets with appropriate guidance from the practice,” says Kellogg. “I feel a veterinarian’s responsibility is to present treatment alternatives objectively and let the individual decide how to proceed.”

Why me?

e are all different people with our own identity and story, but anyone can ignite their own flame. After my trip to Disney Dreamers Academy, the fire inside of me has been brighter then ever. Rewinding back in my life, my dreams have remained the same. However, the path I will take to achieve my goals has now changed drastically. When I applied for this scholarship, I had no concept of the impact it would have on my life and my drive to assist others to go after their passion. When I received the envelope in the mail informing me that I was one of a hundred recipients, tears overcame me. No one word could describe the emotions running through my body. I was baffled because anyone from the 48 continental United

20 everythinglake.com

States could’ve been chosen. Over 5,000 students across the country applied, yet it was me who was given this incredible opportunity. Why, why me? It was the most amazing 4-day power-packed program hosted right in my own backyard at Walt Disney World. It was a collaboration between Disney, Mr. Steve Harvey, and Essence Magazine. The purpose of Disney’s Dreamers Academy is to inspire, motivate, and network. The 100 dreamers selected are taught how to pursue their dreams, and silence the voices that have told them they can’t achieve their goals. A celebrity panel of judges guided by comedian, author, philanthropist, and Disney’s Dreamers Academy Ambassador Steve Harvey reviewed over

5,000 applications and narrowed it down to 100 students to participate in the 2013 program. The main pillars in the selection process were exhibiting curiosity, compassion, and leadership skills. Students engaged in various activities, including deep dives that gave the dreamers insight into career paths of their interest. The Academy hosted a networking dinner, which allowed the dreamers to use their supplied business cards to connect with others. Students were given the chance to have multiple sessions with Mr. Harvey, including an “Unplugged” session. This was something special between he and the dreamers to help them understand the importance of self-respect. One of the nights, the boys and girls were separated and attended empowerment sessions that were very personal and eye opening. As a final celebration before the commencement ceremony on Sunday, the dreamers were treated to a “prom” where Cupid (Singing Artist) performed for them. The days spent at Disney’s Dreamers Academy are more elaborate and incomprehensible then anyone could

ever imagine. The days were long, starting before six in the morning and ended after eleven at night. The Academy’s Speakers Resource Group included Terrance J (host of BET’s “106 and Park”), Stephan A. Smith (Journalist/Commentator), Dr. Steve Perry

From this program I have learned you must “Let your haters be your motivators” like Mr. Harvey would say. No experience will ever compare to what I received in my four days and three nights at Walt Disney World. I am more motivated then ever to share my commitment and dedication with others. No one should lower him or herself to a statistic, but prove to the world what they are capable of achieving. Anyone can dream, but it takes someone truly gifted

to push past all the obstacles and put action to their words. “Dreamers get scared but proceed anyways, dreamers talk about their dreams not their problems, dreamers run towards opposition not from it, and dreamers do not complain about everything they have to do in order to make their dream grow,” said Jonathan Sprinkles. On commencement day, March 10, 2013, all of the 100 dreamers were given class rings compliments of the Jostens Company. We were all inducted into the 2013 Disney’s Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey and Essence Magazine. The rings are all inscribed with the students name on the inside, Mr. Steve Harvey’s signature, the year 2013, Essence Magazine, the title “Disney Dreamers Academy”, and an embossed Mickey Mouse. SNACKING ON THE GO: perfectly

portioned snacks made simple and stylish (BPT) - In today’s busy world, snacking on the go is a fact of life. However, delicious and balanced snacks don’t need to be boring; or become bruised and forgotten items at the bottom of your purse. Here are some creative ways to spice up your snack routine and help you savor perfectly portioned and portable snacks to help maintain a balanced diet.

Remember this rule of thumb. Sometimes it’s tough to remember portion sizes for snacks when you’re busy at home or at the office. The best tool to use when portioning your snacks is actually always with you - your hand. * The size of your thumb = a serving of cheese * Two thumbs = a serving of your favorite nut butter * A handful = the number of nuts you should eat * A balled fist = a serving of fruits or veggies Add pop - and protection - to grapes. A simple way to make grapes a grab-and-go snack is by putting them in your freezer overnight. Fill up a serving’s worth of frozen grapes before heading out the door in the morning and enjoy at your leisure - no refrigerator necessary. If you nibble on them while they’re still frozen they have a refreshing popsicle-like taste. By afternoon, the grapes will be thawed, but not bruised.

Make it easy to grab your favorite treat and go. Carrying snacks in your purse can be dangerous for the other contents inside, for example, a smashed banana gets everywhere. Consider using a carrying case to keep your treats away from your phone and wallet. One option is to use a lipstick case, to bring chocolate with you when you’re out and about.

“I love a little chocolate every day, so it’s really helpful to have a custom carrying case that fits just the right amount for me to enjoy on the go,” says chocolate-lover and do-ityourself expert Brittany Bailey of the Pretty Handy Girl blog. “Four or five HERSHEY’S KISSES Chocolates fit perfectly in the case and are just 100 calories, or about 20 to 25 calories per piece. They are individually wrapped, so I can savor a moment of happiness or share with someone else.” In addition to a lipstick case, you can try converting a travel soap box or other container into your own DIY carrying case and add your own personal touch with stickers, decorative tape or rhinestones. It’s a fun and simple way to take your favorite treats with you wherever you go.

Create your own 100-calorie pack. Looking for something new to snack on, but don’t want to pay extra for pre-packaged convenience? Try measuring granola, nuts, cereal or dried fruit ahead of time and packing them in small plastic bags to create your own individual snack packs. Don’t forget to label them so that reusing the bags is easy. Making these easy grab-and-go snacks will help you keep track of your snacks, even when you’re at home, and these small bites will help keep you satisfied between meals. Boomers & Beyond:

A 5-step action plan for keeping your heart healthy (BPT) - More baby boomers and older adults are taking a proactive approach to heart health. Living a heart-healthy lifestyle in your golden years and dealing with any type of diagnosis head-on is the smart way to keep your heart pumping strong for many years to come. Following these five easy steps can help you take control.

1. EXERCISE YOUR HEART BY STAYING ACTIVE. Increasing your heart rate through daily exercise can help keep your heart healthy and help you live longer. Good hearthealthy activities include walking, swimming and bicycling. Stay motivated by exercising with a friend.

2. EAT HEART-HEALTHY FOODS. Fresh fruits and vegetables are fantastic for heart health - make it your goal to eat a variety of colors every day. Whole grains and fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids are good choices also.

3. CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT HEART-HEALTHY SUPPLEMENTS. As we age, sometimes our bodies can’t absorb vitamins and minerals as well as when we were younger. Many people take vitamin D and a low-dose aspirin daily once they hit their 50s or 60s. Ask your doctor for recommendations.

24 everythinglake.com

4. SCHEDULE YOUR ANNUAL PHYSICAL. An annual physical is the cornerstone of preventative care. At your appointment, make sure you get your blood pressure and cholesterol checked. Have your doctor explain what those numbers mean for you.

5. DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS. No matter what, when it comes to the health of your heart, ask questions. If you are diagnosed with a slow heartbeat and need a pacemaker, talk with your doctor about your options and determine if a pacemaker that is approved for use in an MRI may be right for you. Marilyn Rose of Richardson, Texas, ate healthy, exercised regularly and scheduled yearly physicals, but at age 80 she frequently felt tired and short of breath. Rose was scheduled for an echocardiogram,

a heart test that allows the doctor to see the movement of the heart, and it was then that she learned she had a condition called bradycardia, or a slow heartbeat. Rose needed a pacemaker to help her live a full life, but she learned that historically, pacemakers have not been approved in the U.S. for use with MRIs. She was concerned - she knew at her age the likelihood that she might need an MRI at some point was high. After talking with her doctor and asking plenty of questions, Rose learned that the FDA had approved the first pacemaker that was fit for use in the MRI environment. Today, after getting her pacemaker, she’s feeling great and is back to her regular life, swimming, knitting and playing with her five grandkids. Her friends call her the “Energizer bunny,” and with her pacemaker she says she feels better than she did before. For Rose, asking the right questions made a life-changing difference.

Nana’s Grill at Break Point Alley 1950 CLASSIQUE LANE, TAVARES, FL • 352-343-5333

By Amir Asghar My culinary taste buds have lead me to a place where I have been with my dad for bowling. This time around, it was the food that took us there. I was looking over the menu and noticed that they had a huge selection to choose from. The menu started with the sides that they call their finger foods and there was a huge selection of them. They also had a big selection of combos, salads and entrée’s. Also on the menu was a Kid’s Menu and a big selection of soft drinks. We ordered the Buffalo Chicken Wings, Blackened Chicken Sandwich, a Cheeseburger and a Buffalo Wrap. The wings were crisp with a mouth watering sauce on them. The Blackened Chicken was grilled to perfection, 26 everythinglake.com

placed in a roll with the right sauce, a tomato and lettuce. Really well done! The Cheeseburger was moist and cooked to the way I like it. The Buffalo Chicken Wrap was delicious. I could not put another bite in my mouth when they brought out the Funnel fries. I am not one to walk away from desert and when I tried them I ended eating it all. Like they say, there is always room for good desert. Located inside Break Point Alley, Nana’s Grill offers a wide assortment of food. Add the bowling, video game room, pool tables and the dart room, this is an experience that you do not want to miss. I am looking forward to when we go and enjoy Break Point Alley again.

GOING THE EXTRA MILE: Secrets to keeping cars running longer on the roads (BPT) - Hitting 100,000 miles on the odometer for most people means it’s time to start car shopping. But for others it’s a personal challenge to go the extra mile, save a little cash and take their cars another 100,000 miles. Racking up miles can evoke pride in some, but it is more than just bragging rights. Many people are driving cars tens and hundreds of thousands of miles further simply to keep their wallets a little fuller. For Dave Neil, a professional bus driver and a pastor in Minnesota, going the extra mile has meant saving money by collecting more than 200,000 miles on each of his family’s last four vehicles and driving his current car a whopping 430,400 miles. “It takes patience and luck,” says Neil of hitting the high mileage. “It can be a difficult decision to pay for repairs on older vehicles, especially when those costs are comparable to the value of the car. But, repair costs are a small price to pay compared to monthly car payments.” For those who plan on taking a car past 150,000 miles, routine maintenance starting early in a car’s life can help mitigate hefty repair costs further down the line. Inevitably though, drivers of high-mileage vehicles will sooner or later face repair costs that challenge their willpower. “We’re seeing professional trucking companies, small business owners and everyday drivers looking to keep their vehicles running longer,” says Andrew Hamilton,

director of lubricants for CHS, which manufactures and markets Cenex fuels, lubricants and propane through a network of over 1,400 Cenex brand retailers in 19 states. “Regardless of the size or type of vehicle, it’s almost always more affordable in the long run to make repairs rather than to replace a vehicle. And in today’s economy, more and more people are doing just that.” Using a good motor oil and changing it frequently and consistently throughout a car’s life is essential for getting the most miles from it. High-mileage oil is available with added protection for older cars, but it doesn’t necessarily benefit newer cars. Hamilton recommends a highperforming synthetic oil, such as Cenex Maxtron, which can help take a vehicle that extra mile and improve fuel economy no matter how many miles it has. Smart driving is another simple way to keep a car running smoothly into the higher miles. Vigilant driving not only helps prevent accidents that could shorten a vehicle’s life but also is less taxing on an engine and brake system. To keep a car running well, make a habit of accelerating slowly, using cruise control on the highway and easing up on the brakes. To learn more about going the extra mile, Hamilton recommends visiting tanksofthanks.com. The website provides consumers and business owners with useful information from fuel and maintenances experts, and allows visitors to nominate people they know for a free tank of gas.

Tips for optimizing small spaces (BPT) - The trend toward smaller, more efficient homes is still in full swing, with new home builders offering floor plans that lower square footage while amping up usability. If your home is older, however, or you live in an apartment, your smaller space may just feel ... well, small. Being short on space doesn’t mean you have to be short on style or efficiency. Even older small spaces can get an open, useful feel with the right design and decorating tactics. Here are a few ways you can optimize your small space:

BE SIZE WISE Nothing makes a small room look more cramped than filling it with furnishings that are too big for the space. For example, if your living room is 10 by 12, a 9-foot-long sofa is going to dominate the room and leave little space for anything else. Conversely, placing a smaller bed (such as a twin or single) in a modestly sized bedroom is a classic trick designers and home stagers use to make a bedroom look larger.

elements. Choosing a bright or light wall color can help a smaller room feel more open and airy. Adding mirrors is another way to make a room appear larger. You don’t need to install a full-length mirror on one wall; a series of smaller mirrors attractively positioned in a cluster can do the job just as well without being overwhelming.

When buying furniture for your small space, keep scale in mind. Furnishings should fit the space well, leaving plenty of area for you to move around them. Mohawk Homescapes blogger Cecilia Staniec advises homeowners take room measurements. “You should never shop for furniture without a complete set of measurements,” she writes.

Carefully consider accessories you place on the wall, and don’t overdo it. Too much on the walls will make them look cluttered and even smaller. Sometimes, one or two thoughtful graphic elements are all you need to make a design statement.

OPEN UP FLOOR SPACE

A lack of lighting can make a small room look positively cramped. Whenever possible, enhance the size and appeal of your rooms with plenty of light. Natural light is optimum and adding a skylight or solar tube is a great way to bring sunshine into your home.

Smart use of wall space can open up floor space, which is often at a premium in small rooms. Some items must occupy floor space, such as sofas, tables and chairs. Others - like lighting, TVs and electronic components - don’t. Wall-mounting TVs, especially flat screens, can be a great way to conserve floor space and create an appealing focal point for a petite room. Low-profile wall mounts, like Sanus’ Super Slim Full-motion VMF408, are perfect for small to medium screens of 26 to 47 inches. The mounts keep the screen close to the wall while providing a full range of motion for optimum viewing from multiple seating areas. Similarly, you can wall-mount your computer monitor - even an iPad.

WORK WITH YOUR WALLS

LET THERE BE LIGHT

If that kind of renovation isn’t in your budget, however, maximize natural light by keeping window treatments light and open. Avoid dark colors around windows, as darker hues absorb more natural light. Recessed lighting overhead can help a room feel loftier, and wall sconces provide illumination without occupying valuable floor space. When it comes to home decorating, bigger isn’t always better and smaller doesn’t have to mean cramped. With the right blend of furnishings, colors and accessories, it’s possible to live large in any small space.

Your walls can work for you in other ways, too. Even in small rooms, the walls are one of the largest design everythinglake.com 29

Deck DIY: Five tips to upgrade your outdoor living space for summer (BPT) - From grilling and dining to simply relaxing, your home’s deck is frequently the center of family life during warm weather months. That’s why there’s no better time to give your outdoor living space the upgrade it deserves. Whether you’re building a dream deck from scratch - or sprucing up an existing space - here are five tips for do-ityourselfers who want to start turning their outdoor living aspirations into reality this weekend.

1 - Discover your inspiration Your deck is a natural extension of your home and your style. Think about the type of design elements that will best fit your family’s activities and complement both outdoor views and the layout of your yard. Flip through favorite magazines to find photos that jumpstart your inner designer, go online to experiment with virtual planners that allow you to try out different colors and configurations or use mobile apps to create outdoor living space designs anywhere at any time.

2 - Choose materials manufactured to last If you’re investing in a brand new deck, select materials that will stand up to years of wear and tear from kids, pets, dropped grilling tools, heavy outdoor furniture - and even the harshest of weather. New high-performance wood-alternative decking like Trex Enhance combines superior durability and longlasting good looks. With Trex’s protective shell technology, it’s also resistant to fading, staining, scratching and mold - while offering hassle-free maintenance. “Food and drink spills wash off easily with just soap and water, which is ideal if you’re planning a summer of backyard barbecues and deck parties,” says Adam Zambanini, vice president of marketing for Trex. “Unlike the upkeep required of wood decking, you’ll never need to sand, stain or paint - and you won’t have to worry about rotting, warping, cracking or splintering.” Combining enduring beauty and performance - but priced at a value that appeals to do-it-yourselfers - Trex Enhance

decking offers the additional peace of mind of a 25-year limited fade and stain warranty. It’s also available in stock at The Home Depot stores, making it even easier to begin building your outdoor oasis this weekend.

3 - Look for easy-to-install solutions Installing a new deck may seem daunting at first, but with the proper tools and resources, you’ll not only save money on labor costs - but you’ll also take pride in knowing you successfully completed a home improvement project with your own two hands. As you create a list of essential materials for your project, think about incorporating a hidden fastener system rather than traditional nails or screws. Hidden fasteners can make the installation of decking boards easier and faster and create a more professional look. Your deck’s surface will be smooth, seamless and more comfortable underfoot.

4 - Consider a deck makeover If your budget doesn’t allow for a complete deck rebuild this year, you can resurface an old wooden deck that’s starting to wear, warp and rot with new higher-performance materials. Simply remove the existing boards and check that the sub-structure remains sturdy before installing woodalternative decking like Trex Enhance. Giving your wood deck a facelift with durable, beautiful composite materials will increase curb appeal, lengthen its lifespan and cut down on maintenance requirements for years to come.

5 - Add finishing touches Even if you’re already the proud owner of a gorgeous outdoor living space, take style and comfort to the next level with weekend warrior-worthy projects. Add new modular railing in contrasting or complementary colors to create a perfect frame for your deck, or establish cozy conversation nooks with weather-resistant furniture. Construct an elegant pergola to lend shade from the harsh summer sun and install energy-efficient deck lighting to create ambience for twilight cocktail parties.
