How Environment, Industrialization and Rain Barrels are Interconnected By Maverick M. Stanford
A
s early as elementary science, it taught us that water covers 70% of the Earth’s surface, while earth’s land mass only covers 30% of the Earth’s surface. Now that is huge difference. Everyone might wonder how come other environmental organizations have been relentless in their campaign to conserve water. Well the truth is only a small percentage of water is actually in a useable state, the majority being the saltwater of the ocean or in the polar icecaps. And the rest of the earth’s body of water such as rivers and streams are drying up fast. Rain barrels are one of the most practical ways to conserve water. With the earth’s booming population and industrialization, both require put pressure to the earth’s water reservoir. The human population requires more fresh water to drink and so food production such as agriculture and livestock. As industrialization continues globally more and more water is used in manufacturing processes. These scenarios suggest one clear message to all; water shortage is an imminent problem in the near future.
the households who are far away from towns and villages with no reliable water system. By simply installing rain barrels, the household can save a great deal of water. Though rain barrel water may not pass as drinking water without a proper and thorough filtration system, it can be used in flushing toilets, lawn and gardening usage, car washing and general cleaning purposes. Collecting and catching rain water is easy too; minutes of heavy downpour are enough to fill up large rain barrels that can be used by households for several days. Just imagine how much water can be saved if all household will turn into utilize rain barrels as a mean to save and conserve water.
The government has a big role to play in creating laws that protects earth’s natural water resources from total destruction and disseminating information to the public with ways and means to conserve water. A lot of states in US are encouraging the use of rain barrels, especially to

Bringing a new puppy into your home? By Ramk Park
PUPPIES WILL GROW UP VERY QUICKLY. KNOW HOW TO TRAIN THEM RIGHT AND THEY WILL BECOME A GOOD NATURED AND WELL-MANNERED ADULT DOG.
Before You Search For A Puppy
Before you get a new puppy, make sure you know exactly what kind of puppy to look for and how to raise and train him.
Deciding Which Type of Puppy
The breed, type, size, activity level, hair color, hair length, and gender of your prospective puppy are personal choices and best left entirely up to you and your family. You will probably have read lots of well-meaning advice from pet professionals that advise you, for example, not to get certain breeds if you have children, not to get large dogs if you live in an apartment, and not to get active dogs in the city. In reality, all breeds and types of dogs can be wonderful or problematic with children. It very much depends on whether or not the puppy was trained how to act around children and the children were taught how to act around the puppy. Because of their lower activity levels, large dogs adapt more quickly to apartment living than little dogs. Big dogs just take up more space. And active dogs can live in cities just as active people live in cities. In fact, city dogs tend to be walked and exercised more than suburban dogs. In the long run, it will be you who will be living with your puppy and teaching it to adjust to your lifestyle and living arrangement.

Selecting Your Individual Puppy
It is vital however, in your puppy search that you know how to evaluate whether your prospective puppy is physically and mentally healthy. Research your prospective puppy’s lineage to confirm that his grandparents and great-grandparents all lived to a ripe old age, and to check how many of his doggy family suffered from breed-specific problems. Long life is the best indicator of overall physical and behavioral health and the best predictor that your puppy will have a long life expectancy. Research well and most of all, please take your decision to get a puppy seriously. Each year, several million dogs are abandoned, given to shelters and euthanized, almost entirely because easily preventable and utterly predictable puppy problems were allowed to develop into much more difficult to resolve adult behavior, training and temperament problems. Train your new puppy and you will have a well behaved, loveable, forever family member!

Midnight in Paris… or Mount Dora? Story & Photos By Michelle Turner
R
ecently, Bella Faire Event Planners brought Paris to the Lakeside Inn in Mount Dora with their 3rd Annual Couture Fashion Designers Showcase and Competition. Designers from various parts of Florida, including Miami and Tampa, as well as Lake County based designers, gathered to showcase their designs in an event to benefit the West Leesburg Community Development Corporation (WLCDC). President Agnes Berry of The West Leesburg Community Development Corporation shared with the audience that in 1997 the WLCDC was created to “pursue economic, social, educational, and physical improvements for the West Leesburg neighborhoods of Montclair, Woodland Park, and Carver Heights. WLCDC has seen paved roads, an increase in stop signs, scholarships, and activities for seniors accomplished in the last 15 years. However, as President Berry shared, there are still drainage improvements, underground utilities, and senior camps to finish. That is where the Bella Faire “Midnight in Paris” event comes in. Whether it was swimwear, ready-to-wear, or couture, Midnight in Paris has something for everyone. The first part of the evening was a showcase that featured EM’Z Boutique of Mount Dora, Trineice Cagua of Leesburg, and Christopher Abella of Miami. Trineice is the designer of the stylish, high-end JCagua Swim swimwear line. Christopher Abella is a 13- year old fashion designing wonder boy. The talent he showed at such a young age in his couture red carpet looks left the crowd stunned. The second part of the evening was a designer competition that featured: Haley’s Comet Clothing by Haley Gerig of Lake County La Physique’ by Rheba Turnbull of Lake County and APM designs by Audrey “Pat” McGhee of St. Petersburg. The three designers presented three very different aesthetics in very diverse collections. However, there was one consistency throughout- the talent of each designer. Each designer presented gorgeous garments and it was clear that they each have bright futures in the fashion industry. While it was unfortunate that a Lake County designer didn’t win the night’s competition, from the size and enthusiasm of the crowd, the real winner of the evening was the West Leesburg Community Development Corporation.

Sweet Treats for a Cause
By Michelle Turner ashion and style is often seen as subjective to personal taste and opinion. However, there is one thing that every fashion lover can agree on- there is nothing more fashionable than fashion for a cause. Lake County daughter Haley Gerig is bringing her fashion designing talents to her hometown this January to raise awareness and funds to benefit local 8th grade students on their way to high school.
F
In our current economy, the arts are often the first on the financial chopping block and often the costs of participating in extra curricular activities such as band or drama fall onto the student’s family. Sometimes though, the parents are not able to shoulder these costs. Sweet Treats for a Cause is looking to raise money to benefit the Safe Climate Coalition of Lake County – money that will provide scholarships to those students so that they will be able to participate in the arts. Sweet Treats for a Cause is a fashion show, dessert bar, and shopping experience that is the brainchild of Haley and her Mother Shelly. As a student of the arts in Lake County who went on to further her knowledge of fashion and design, Haley desires to use the skills she’s learned, skills that can be found in her line Haley’s Comet Clothing, to help the youth art community that first fostered her love of the arts. On Saturday January 12th, 2013 at Lake Receptions in Mount Dora members of the community will gather as sponsors, models, fashion contributors, and fans in support of this worthwhile and tasty event. If you are interested in joining them, do not hesitate to contact Haley at halegerig@hotmail.com or Shelly at writer@ shellgerig.com. The next Meryl Streep, Coco Chanel, or Frank Sinatra may be right here in Lake County. How can we not ensure that they have every opportunity to succeed?

veterans day CELEBRATIONS
A Weekend for Our Warriors Story & Photos By Michelle Turner
A
s various Veterans Day celebrations took place across the county, Everything Lake was honored to be a part of Habitat for Humanity’s Veterans Housing Initiative weekend activities- including the Inaugural Pro-Am Golf Tournament on Veterans Day. With events spanning from Saturday morning until Monday afternoon, Habitat for Humanity of LakeSumter brought community awareness to the issue of Veterans Housing in a huge way. The weekend began bright and early on the morning of November 10th as Lake County veterans, volunteers, and honored guests arrived in Wildwood to raise the trusses on the future home of disabled Vietnam Marine Corps Veteran Curtis Walters. The morning began with various guest speakers sharing just how meaningful the Veteran’s Housing Initiative was to them and to the vision of Habitat of Lake- Sumter and Habitat International. With the weather just about perfect, it took only about 3 hours for a cement slab with a minimal skeleton of a frame to take shape and look like a home for the first time. Mr. Walters, a gentle giant of a man, was humbled beyond words as his home quickly gained walls and a roof. If witnessing the generosity of virtual strangers wasn’t meaningful enough, all of this was happening on the Marine Corps’ 237th birthday- a day that is at the heart of every Marine. The day concluded around 1pm with a generous lunch spread that included a birthday cake in honor of the USMC birthday. While it seemed quite a bit was accomplished on Saturday morning, in the grand scheme of Habitat’s CEO Kent Adcock’s vision for the Veterans Housing Initiative, it was only the beginning. On Sunday evening, many prestigious members of the Lake County, Veteran, and Habitat International communities gathered at Howey-in-the-Hills’ Mission Inn for a Silent Auction and Dinner.
14 everythinglake.com
It was at this dinner that approximately 200 guests, including some worked at the site the day before, truly became aware of Mr. Walters dire living situation. It was also at this event where numerous eyes were opened to the issue of Veteran’s Housing in the Lake and Sumter communities and just how great the need really is. Over one million veterans live in Florida and thousands are expected to return to the Lake Sumter area from Iraq and Afghanistan. In addition to individual homes- such as the one being built for Mr. Walters- Habitat for Humanity is working toward building a 15 bedroom transitional housing facility in Leesburg that will service approximately 50 veterans a year. Guest speakers and a video of Mr. Walters sharing his story brought to reality that the weekends’ festivities were truly just the starting line of a marathon effort. The marathon continued early Monday morning, Veterans Day, at the first tee of Mission Inn’s El Campeon golf course- one of the most historic and revered courses in all of Florida. 17 PGA Tour Players and their foursomes comprised of sponsors, community leaders, and veterans gathered to face 18 holes of sand bunkers and water traps in an effort to raise financial support for the Veterans’ Housing Initiative and develop a network within the LakeSumter community that will be working together to accomplish the ultimate goal of providing transitional and permanent housing to those in our community that have sacrificed so much for our country. If you are interested in helping the Veterans Housing Initiative either through volunteering or through financial support, please contact Habitat for Humanity of Lake-Sumter at veterans@habitatls.org or (352) 483-0434.

Thanksgiving Dinner Story & Photos By Jennifer Moseley
O
n Sunday November 18, 2012, Bridges Covenant Church (Tavares), The Church at Whistling Pines (Umatilla) and  Road Dogs (Leesburg, FL) came together at Sunset Island Park in Eustis to feed the local community a Thanksgiving dinner. It was great to see so many helping to bring food and helping to serve the people who might otherwise go without for the holiday. Second Cycle (Tavares, FL) donated five bicycles that were given out to new homes. We were able to serve about 160 people and there was enough food left over that we were able to donate it to the Homeless Vets of Eustis, the Ruth House and Our Fathers House Shelter. Mark 6:42 They all ate and were satisfied.Â

John French and the French Connection By Michelle Turner
F
rom the Lake County Folk Festival to the Lakeside Inn and Olivia’s Coffeehouse, Singer/Songwriter/Guitarist John French can be found sharing his unique combination of Americana, Bluegrass and Folk with the residents of Lake County. With a schedule that takes him from venue to venue in the Golden Triangle area, and even as far as Orlando and Sarasota, it’s a wonder that he has time to release various c.d.’s of his music- but he has been able to do just that. John and his band The French Connection are recording in Orlando at the studio of songwriter and musician Bob Rafkin. The first collaboration of Bob and John resulted in John’s first CD “All Roads” that was release to fans in October of 2011. All talented and with countless years of experience, The French Connection is a group of four musicians that includes Steve Waters, Joe Ramirez, Paul Smithson, and Sean Curran. Bringing solo and group experiences, The French Connection compliments John French’s vocals beautifully.

While talented vocally, John French is also a very talented songwriter. He started writing lyrics early, at the age of 13, and taught himself to play the guitar 3 years later. It was a natural progression to combine those lyrics with his individual guitar playing style. Being born in Kentucky, and raised in small towns across the south in places such as Texas and Tennessee, John very often writes about those influences in his music. In fact, in 1996, John co-wrote a song that was included on the debut release “Just Add Ice” of rockabilly band V-Roys. Coproduced by Steve Earle on E-Squared Records, the band was a regional favorite on the east coast and around their hometown of Knoxville, Tennessee. As a result, John became a published member of BMI music and has continued to perform and evolve into the solo artist that can be found throughout Lake County. One of the most essential ways to protect your skin is to keep it away from the harmful rays of the sun. Ultraviolet radiation harms the skin as well as it can result to wrinkles, premature aging, age spots or even cancer as well. An individual should really get further preventative measures in order to be certain that his or her skin is not totally exposed under the harmful rays of the sun. Do not fail to remember that one should apply a natural sunscreen, or a moisturizer that includes sunscreen (with minimum of SPF 15) every day. Although, it does not mean that you should not go out at all during the day, as if you are like a nocturnal creature. Your skin also needs some sunlight every day. A 10 to 15 exposures at sunrise or sunset will be alright. In addition to that, a variety of fine skin care products such as an all natural moisturizer is one of the essential components for a vigorous complexity. Keep on moisturizing all through the day to keep your sensitive skin vigorous. Your hands as well as your face is especially vulnerable to everyday dent, and might require it to be moisturized further.

My Grandmother’s Garden By Cameron Bedford
(Cameron is a 9th grader at First Academy in Leesburg. His grandmother’s garden has become a source of pride for both his family and his friends. Not only are they learning the importance of healthy eating, but also how to help and serve the older generations. Below is his story).
B
efore my grandmother had her stroke, my family and I would go over to her house and we would watch her plant the garden. We would help her plant greens, onions, peas and we would make sure it was watered every week. Not only would we do the garden with her, we would go outside and walk with her just for some exercise. After we were done doing the garden and exercising, I would ask her if we would play some cards or watch some television. After the stroke, my grandmother had a lot of food to eat because my friends and I would go pick the all the food. We would give everything to my mom except for the peas because my grandmother would like to pick out the peas for some therapy. Not only would it save some help for my grandmother but it would relieve some help for my granddad because he is in his eighties and he can’t really do much, so I like to do that for him and it makes him feel better. So now my family and I are working on a winter garden and my grandmother is doing great and she is helping us a lot more than she was.
