Green Ideas to Consider When Building Your Home

H

omes are an environment in which each room should be unique and comfortable and each having its own destination. A home is not only an investment, it is a showpiece, and designing your new home is an exciting time. While it is an exciting time, it is also a confusing time as the home owner has many decisions to make, even with the skills of an architect and interior decorator.

the design of the faucets in the home to reduce water consumption. Recycling some of the home’s water through a gray water system is also an option. There are many construction ideas which a green home builder that specializes in green home building will be able to help you when building.

Homes begin on the drawing board and extend into construction, and before getting to the construction stage, it is necessary to have your home well planned. There are many sensational ideas when constructing a home that will undoubtedly bring about your dream home.

One the most valuable things to consider when building your home is to consider how you and your family will be using the home. For example, if you are into formal entertaining then you may want to consider a living room and formal dining room. If you are into a causal relaxed atmosphere, you might want to consider a game room and family room. If you are into hobbies, you might consider a hobbie room and so on. Guests rooms for those that have guests often are also something to consider.

Ideas to consider when building a new home:

The first thing to consider, aside from the budget for building the home, is that each room is a destination and each should be as comfortable as possible. Consider what you want and need in a home, a layout that works well for you and work closely with your builder to ensure that you are building your dream home.

Construction Ideas:

There are essentially two main types of homes which are built. Stick-built homes and modular homes. With the modular home, the home is built in a factory or other premises in pieces and then brought to the building location. In a stickbuilt home, the home is built on the construction site. Modular does not mean manufactured, as manufactured is considered to be a cheaply constructed home.

Design Ideas:

You will also want to consider the lighting sources. Will there be much natural lighting in the home? You may want to create open spaces with large windows. You’ll want to consider where windows will go for the best views of the surround property and scenery.

You will also need to determine your building materials. There are many different materials for home builders to utilize theses days such as green building materials, cob homes and so on, which are natural materials that are eco-friendly.

Green Ideas:

There are many home builders today that specialize in green homes. These are homes that have geothermal systems, or a radiant heating. Other ideas for green home building are everythinglake.com

Cats vs Dogs:

By Ajay P

Which makes a better pet

T

he Cats Vs Dogs controversy has gone on for thousands of years, ever since they were domesticated. Which makes the best pet? The answer depends largely on the owner’s personality and requirements for animal companionship. We have owned both and have made a few observations based on our experiences. Dogs are intensely loyal to the people who feed them. They can be hostile to perceived “invaders,” and a goodly number of them have shown a willingness to put their own lives on the line to protect their owners. The downside to this behavior is that they demand lots of attention. An owner can sit and scratch a dog’s ears for hours and still receive a hurt look from the animal when it’s time to do something else. Cats, although also attention seekers, seem much more aloof and independent. Just don’t expect them to be there for you if a burglar breaks in. An intelligent, well trained dog makes a great hiking companion. Cats couldn’t care less. This is why the owner’s preferences are an important part of the Cats Vs Dogs debate. Cats are complete carnivores, and can digest only meat. (You may have seen a cat eating green grass, but that was probably because its stomach was already upset by something else.) Dogs, like people, are omnivores able to metabolize a variety of foods. The difference is in the body chemistry of the two species. The bottom line when considering Cats Vs Dogs is this: although some dogs may develop a taste for some cat foods, the two types of food are not interchangeable.

8 everythinglake.com

The biggest factor in choosing between Cats Vs Dogs may be the environment of the prospective owner. Do not try to keep a large dog in a small apartment, even if the landlord allows it. You will all be miserable as a result. Cat urine smells worse than dog urine, is more likely to occur indoors and must be dealt with. Dogs are not adept at hunting mice, so rodent control is generally left up to cats, who will also catch lizards, birds and young rabbits. In a rural setting, however, be aware that cats are susceptible to being picked off by owls (yes, owls) and other predators.

Emerald Green in ‘13 By Michelle Turner

T

he Pantone Institute is the foremost authority on color, provider of color systems and leading technology for accurate communication of color. Each year, they announce the color that is expected to be the “it” color for the coming year. Last year, it was Tangerine Tango. For 2013, the color is Emerald Green.

Leatrice Eiseman, an executive director at Pantone explained, “Emerald is such a balanced color, and balance is something to pick up on and listen to. It’s a color of growth, renewal, healing, unity and regeneration — words we’re all so in need of at this point of history.” So, what does this mean for Lake County’s fashionistas? It means that Dorothy was on to something when she was in search of the Emerald City. . It means that emerald green is not just for your bracelets and earrings this year (although this is the perfect year to wear them!). It means a wonderful jewel tone color that can be paired with so many colors. It offers the flexibility to include as much or as little in a wardrobe you are comfortable with. You can go for pair of emerald sneakers, an emerald clutch, emerald highlights in your nail polish, an emerald mid-length trench over an otherwise neutral outfit, or even an emerald belt with a plum colored dress. From eye shadow, notebooks, shorts, hats, and even cell phone cases- emerald green is extremely versatile and can bring an unexpected pop of positivity to your world. But, don’t forget that emerald is not just for your closet. Emerald is a wonderful home décor color as well. Just as with your fashion, you have the flexibility to go as minimal (emerald green throw pillows for an accent of color) or as maximum (as in a bedroom with emerald green walls) that you want. So, whether you decide to start small with a bit of nail polish and a clutch, or go all the way with a green bedroom, Kermit was wrong. It IS easy being green.

Holiday Mobile Park Christmas Story & Photos By Jennifer Moseley

T

hroughout the year, this Holiday Mobile Park in Tavares looks like your everyday mobile home park but when Christmas comes around‌ for the last 30 years it has been turned into a huge display of lights, music and even Santa. As you ride through the park, the residents sit outside to wave at you and wish you a Merry Christmas. This year’s Santa (Joe Smith), Mrs. Clause (Ellen Smith) and the Jolly Elf (Mary Conger) handed out candy canes to all of the children in the vehicles. My family has made it our tradition to drive through to see the lights and see the wonderful residents every year.

New Year By Michelle Turner Photos By Betsy Reed

T

he arrival of a new year often feels like a fresh start and a perfect opportunity to eliminate those pesky bad habits. The New Year is an opportune time to establish new routines that will help us grow mentally, emotionally, socially, physically or intellectually. The start of a New Year symbolizes to many as the turning of a new page, which is probably why it is so common for us to create New Year’s Resolutions. However, as many have found over the years, resolutions are much easier to make than to keep; especially as many of us have abandoned our resolve and settled back into our old patterns by the arrival of February. To end the vicious cycle of unsuccessful New Year’s Resolutions, here are some tips from the American Psychological Association on how to make sure 2013 is the year of your successful resolution:

1. Choose a Specific, Realistic Goal

Every year, millions of adults resolve to “lose weight” or “get in shape” during the next year. Instead of selecting such an ambiguous goal, try focusing on something more concrete that you can realistically set your sights on. For example, you might commit to losing 10 pounds or running a mini-marathon. Choosing a concrete, achievable goal also gives you the opportunity to plan exactly how you are going to achieve your goal over the course of the year.

2. Pick Just One Resolution While you may have a long list of potential New Year’s Resolutions, it is suggested that you should pick just one and focus your energies on it rather than spreading yourself too thin among a number of different objectives. 16 everythinglake.com

3. Don’t Wait Until New Year’s Eve

Planning is an essential part of achieving any goal. Experts suggest that you should spend some time planning out how you will tackle your major behavior change. You can start by writing down your goal in a resolution journal. Then start making a list of things you might do to achieve that goal and note any obstacles that might stand in your way so you can plan how you will overcome them.

4. Start With Small Steps Taking on too much is a common reason why so many New Year’s Resolutions fail. If your goal is losing weight, dramatically slashing calories, over-doing it at the gym or radically altering your normal behavior are sure-fire ways to derail your plans. Instead, focus on taking tiny steps that will ultimately help you reach your larger goal. If you’ve resolved to run a marathon, you can start out by going jogging two or three times a week. If you are trying to eat healthier, you can begin by replacing some of your favorite junk foods with more nutritious foods. While it may seem like a slow start, these small changes make it easier to stick to your new habits and increase the likelihood of your longterm success.

New You 5. Avoid Your Past Failures 7. Don’t Let Small Another strategy for keeping your New Year’s Resolution is to not make the exact same resolution year after year. It’s a matter of positive thinking. If you believe you can do it, it’s more likely that you can. However, if you’ve tried before, you’re more likely you will not have as much faith in your future success. If you do choose to reach for the same goals you’ve tried for in the past, spend some time evaluating your past results. Which strategies were the most effective? Which were the least effective? What has prevented you from keeping your resolution in past years? By changing your approach, you will be more likely to see real results this year.

6. Remember That Change Is a Process

Those unhealthy habits that you are trying to change probably took years to develop, so how can you expect to change them in just a matter or days, weeks or months? It may take longer than you would like to achieve your goals, but remember that this is not a race to the finish. Once you have made the commitment to changing a behavior, it is something that you will continue to work on for the rest of your life.

Stumbles Bring You Down

Encountering a setback is one of the most common reasons why people give up on their New Year’s Resolutions. If you suddenly relapse into a bad habit, don’t view it as a failure. The path toward your goal is not a straight one, and there are always going to be challenges. Instead, view relapses as learning opportunities. Refer to your resolution journal and write down important information about any relapses-when the relapse occurred and what might have triggered it. By understanding the challenges you face, you will be better prepared to deal with them in the future.

8. Get Support from

Your Friends and Family Yes, you’ve probably heard this advice a million times, but that is because the buddy system actually works. Having a solid support system can help you stay motivated. Explain what your goals are to your close friends or family and ask them to help you achieve your objectives. Better yet, enlist the help of others by joining a group that shares your goal. (continued on next page)

everythinglake.com 17

New Year New You 9. Renew Your Motivation

10. Keep Working on Your Goals

During the first days of a New Year’s Resolution, you will probably feel confident and highly motivated to reach your goal. Because you haven’t really faced any discomfort or temptation associated with changing your behavior, making this change might seem all too easy.

By February, many people have lost that initial spark of motivation that they felt immediately after making their New Year’s Resolution. Keep that inspiration alive by continuing to work on your goals, even after facing setbacks. If your current approach is not working, reevaluate your strategies and develop a new plan.

After dealing with the reality of dragging yourself to the gym at 6 A.M. or gritting your teeth through headaches brought on by nicotine withdrawal, your motivation to keep your New Year’s Resolution will probably start to dwindle. When you face such moments, remind yourself of exactly why you are doing this. What do you have to gain by achieving your goal? Find sources of inspiration that will keep you going when times get tough.

As mentioned before, consider keeping a resolution journal where you can write about your successes and struggles. Write down the reasons why you are working toward your goal so that you can refer to them during times when you feel uninspired and unmotivated. You can refer to your journal for past successes when you are struggling, and celebrate overcoming a struggle for renewed motivation. By sticking with it and working on your goal all year long, you can be one of the few who are able to say that 2013 was the year of a successful resolution.

Martin Luther King, Jr.

J

anuary 16, what comes to mind when you hear this date? Is it just another day? Most people get this day off, but none of them truly understand the true meaning of it. This day is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, we “celebrate” it because he was a legacy who opened the eyes to society. By doing so he taught the world values of courage, truth, justice, compassion, dignity, and humility. On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day we commemorate the universal, unconditional love, forgiveness, and the nonviolence that backed up his revolutionary spirit and soul. King’s holiday also represent’s how our society needs to be color blind because we are all the same from the top of our head to the bottom of our toes. No matter the ethnic class you belong in, therefore, we all deserve the same treatment. Everyone should “celebrate” this holiday because we need to understand the values of equality, tolerance, and the imperialness between one person to another, Martin Luther King, Jr. made that clear in his great dream for America. On January 16, you might notice more people getting along, people that do not usually get along. That was Martin Luther King, Jr.’s dream. He wanted interracial and intercultural cooperation and sharing. You could not name another day out of the year that brings out the friendliness of everyone that knows to appreciate this day, it only happens once a year! It doesn’t matter if you are Chinese, Japanese, African-American, Puerto Rican, or Caucasian, you all are a part of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s great vision! It is a peoples’ holiday! On a more personal level, my high school is located in Hudson, Florida, a very mixed community. Do we see it that way? Do we look at each other differently just because someone’s skin is a little darker? Or even a little lighter? Not at all, we appreciate each other for what is on the inside. To my classmates and I, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a day to stop and realize how far our ancestors had to go to fight for our future to be more peaceful than their’s and much more full of love, no matter the color of your skin or the language you speak. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day not only delivers the message of everyone being treated the same, but he also taught us that it IS okay for you to stand up for what you believe in. Martin Luther King, Jr. is a perfect role model for anyone, any age, anywhere.

How to Avoid Injuries By Ajay R

E

xercising is a great way to keep yourself fit and healthy, but there is also a risk of injury. However, if you follow some basic guidelines, and stay within your physical limits, you can ensure that you’ll have an enjoyable and safe workout.

WARM UPS Warm ups are essential…this cannot be stressed on enough. Starting an exercise routine without warm ups can be very damaging to your body. It is always advisable to do some relatively gentle exercise to warm up your muscles, so that they’ll be less susceptible to damage that may occur during exercises. Also, they’ll ensure that they get more flexible and limber. Just spend a few minutes getting warmed up. About 5 to 10 minutes should do. Stretch muscles and other soft tissues. This will prepare your body for the more rigorous exercise that is going to follow, and help you go for a longer period of time without feeling tired or fatigued.

THE RIGHT GET-UP Fitness wear is very important. Only if you are at ease and comfortable in what you’re wearing, can you perform to your optimum potential. The right shoes are imperative. They must be suited to the type of exercise that you are doing. When buying a pair of fitness shoes, always consult with the staff at a sports equipment store, and ask for their advice. The wrong type of shoes can lead to sprains and even long-term injury. Clothes, too, must be comfortable, loose-fitting, and, ideally, made out of a fabric that absorbs sweat, like cotton. Very tight fitting clothes can be uncomfortable, and extremely loose clothes can get in the way. Don’t compromise when it comes to fitness wear.

22 everythinglake.com

COOL DOWN Don’t come to a sudden halt in between strenuous workouts. This causes the blood to pool in your leg veins, and can leave you feeling dizzy and faint. Give time for the lactic acid being produced by your muscles during vigorous activity to be cleared by finishing your session with a few minutes of gentle exercise.

CHANGE AND ALTERNATE It is a good idea if you combine strenuous activity with something that is comparatively less physically demanding. This lessens your chances of over-exerting yourself, and gives your body more time to recover from bouts of intense activity.

STOP WHEN IT STARTS HURTING If exercising starts to hurt, stop until the pain has completely gone away. Saying like ‘no pain, no gain’ should be ignored, since they make you push yourself beyond your physical limits…which isn’t a good thing, after all. If you experience physical discomfort and things like dizziness, faintness, nausea, shortness of breath etc, please visit your doctor right away. Also, avoid exercising when you are unwell or sick.

restaurant OF THE MONTH

M

y culinary taste buds took me to this restaurant in Lady Lake. “We offer more than BBQ” stated Don the owner of this gem. “We are a family oriented restaurant with a Texas flare. We are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.” “Texas Stockyards BBQ goes beyond the average and goes the extra mile to create an art form that instills flavor and tenderness that brings the true taste of Texas. It has taken us a year of trial and error to perfect our flavors and techniques. We started our journey in putting our brand on BBQ in a small town in Texas outside of Houston. Our first BBQ came out of a trailer that was parked in front of a gas station. We sold an avg. of 1000lbs. a week and perfected our Texas style brand. The key to a true Texas style BBQ is the seasoning, rubs and mop sauces. The number one key ingredient to Texas BBQ is patience because to bring the flavor and tenderness you must cook with a hard wood indirect smoke and heat away from the meat at a slow and low temperature. We cook with temperatures of 160F to 190F. Some of the meats can take up to 16 to 18 hours. With true Texas style BBQ you look for that reddish red ring that

24 everythinglake.com

naturally develops around the edge of the meat from the smoke during the cooking process. We never introduce anything but wood to any of our meats. That means we don’t use gas, electric, and or wood chips. So the next time you have some good ole BBQ check to see if it was cooked the Texas way, Don explained. I had a chance to try some of the fine BBQ and it was all that it was billed up to be. The meats were seasoned well, tender and they melted in your mouth. You could taste the freshness in it. The portion sizes were huge and I promise that you will not leave hungry when you are done. They have a huge selection of fresh baked desserts. They were again fresh and the portions were huge. Their lunch special is Smoky Joe and fries for $5 from 11am to 4pm. They have Mexican night on Wednesday, Thursday is Country Cooking night, Friday is steak night and Saturday is smoked prime rib.

Texas Stockyard BBQ opens at 7am every day for breakfast and they close at 8pm expect for Friday and Saturday when they close at 9pm. Reservations are recommended. They are located 360 South 27/441 Hwy in Lady Lake. You can reach them at 352-750-5227 or on their website at www.texasstockyards.com. I will definitely be going back to this restaurant.

Ashley Baker Story & Photos By Betsy Reed

W

hen Ashley Baker was a sophomore at Eustis High School she auditioned for the lead role in “High School Musical” and won the part. On opening night there was a Casting Director and Producer in the audience that was scouting talent for a Feature Film that they were filming around Central Florida. After the play they approached her and offered her an audition for the lead female role in the film. After the audition process she ended up being offered the lead role. The film was “The Old Livingston House”. During the filming the director, Jeffery Lamb told her that he had written the lyrics to a song years before that he felt would be great in the film but had no melody or music and would she like to see what she could do with it. She took the song and came up with the melody. From there she went into the studio with Ravel Kagan, who was writing the score for the movie and recorded her first single “Summer Daze” which was featured in the film. After recording “Summer Daze” Baker was interested to see where this could go so she and her family started sending it out to radio and people in Nashville to see what happened and the response was amazing! “Summer Daze” got picked up by IRCountry Radio Network out of Dallas and went straight to #1 on their request chart. It has since gone on to be the 3rd most requested song of all time on the network and is still in the top 25 almost 2 years later. Following some success with “Summer Daze” she had a call from Pat Melfi (manager of Colon Ray and Juice Newton) and he wanted her to do a project with him which do to funding didn’t materialize. So she and her parents went to Nashville and met with some songwriters and producers and met her Producer, Peter Young. Peter helped her pick 2 songs “Bye Bye” and “What a Day to Shake a Heartache” and hooked her up with some of the best known musicians in Nashville. Her guitar player was Bob Hatter (Randy Houser’s Band) John Henry Trinko on Keyboards (Randy Houser’s Band) William Ellis on Drums (Montgomery Gentry) Dow Tomlin on Bass (the most popular session bass player in Nashville) and Jason Roller who plays fiddle, mandolin, bango you name it he plays it (Joe Diffey, Kelly Pickler, Jake Owen and currently touring with Wynonna). She cut

those records and they caught the attention of Al Shiltz and Mike Martinovich with The Consortium Group in Nashville who has guided such names as Billy Joel, The Judd’s, Bruce Springsteen, Jason Aldean, Thompson Square and Band Perry and were instrumental in founding Broken Bow Records. She then heard from Randy Guidry and Debbie Holley of Holley-Guidry in Nashville. Holley-Guidry is a well known management and consulting firm in Nashville who guided the career of Tracy Lawrence. Randy and Debbie are working with her developing her songwriting and image. These people have been very instrumental in guiding her career thus far and she owes them a great deal of gratitude. Baker went back into the studio and cut “Country Girls Rock” and it took off on radio and went to #1 on Hot Country 102.9 in North Carolina and just entered the top 50 on Real Country Radio in Tokyo. It was the only independent picked by All Country 99.9 Radio in France along with 15 other United States country songs for the launch show when they changed their format to country, all of the other songs were artists signed on major labels. “Country Girls Rock” hit the TOP 5 in sales in Modern Country on CDBABY, which next to I-Tunes is the largest online distributor of music. Baker went back to Nashville this past summer and recorded her most recent track “Might Be Today” which just went to #6 on 102.9 Hot Country and that same week “Country Girls Rock” entered the TOP 50 in Japan. “I’m now working with the greatest band in the world THE NEON TRUCKERS getting ready to do some show dates, cut some records in Nashville and working on some tracks for an audition in Miami for a major network TV show,” said Ashley. Ashley Baker will be releasing show dates and updates of all kinds on her web page www.ashleybaker.net and on her musician Facebook page (Ashley Baker). Go support this talented young lady and keep your eye on her because she’s about to take off!
