5 rules to negotiate a better salary (BPT) - Between networking, polishing your resume, applying and interviewing, finding a job is time consuming. Once the offer comes in, all your hard work is done, right? Not necessarily. Now is the time for negotiating - a process few people are comfortable with. Skipping it, however, can mean that you miss out on better benefits or a higher salary. “You should always negotiate a higher salary,” says Vanessa Jackson, director of career services at The Illinois Institute of Art - Chicago. “Hiring managers expect this, so they do not start by offering the highest salary in their range.” Rule 1: Be polite The first rule when it comes to negotiating is to always be polite. “Say ‘Thank you very much for this opportunity. I am so excited to join your company.’ Then move into the negotiation,” says Shannon Delecki, assistant director of career services at The Art Institute of Michigan. Your requests should never sound like demands. If they do, you could negotiate your way right out of a job. Remember, the negotiation is a balancing act. You want a higher salary but you’re looking to work with the person on the other end of the negotiation, so be respectful and use good manners always. Rule 2: Know your worth Make sure you’ve done your research. “Know the average salaries for the position and for the market,” says Delecki. That means what others with similar experience would make in the same city where you’ll be working.

Rule 3: Ask for the right amount Ask for too little and you’ll sell yourself short, but if you ask for too much you’ll risk offending your future employer. How much should you ask for? Jackson recommends anywhere from $3,000 - $5,000 above the company’s offer. After conveying your gratitude for the job offer, confidently state: “I’m hoping to negotiate a salary closer to $XX.” Rule 4: Don’t forget other benefits There are times that companies may not be able to budge on the dollar amount, but that doesn’t mean negotiations are done. This could be an opportunity to negotiate other benefits like paid time off. “Ask the company whether they can be more flexible about vacation or PTO days,” says Delecki. In addition to vacation days, other benefits that you could try to negotiate for include flex time for working from home and subsidized daycare costs. “I’ve known people who negotiated for immediate vesting in the company’s 401(k),” observes Jackson. Rule 5: Be realistic Keep in mind, people negotiating higher-level jobs will likely have more success negotiating. If you are just out of college and accepting an entry-level job, employers typically will not negotiate much, if at all. Young professionals can always ask, but they must be realistic about what they should ask for and about what an employer is likely to approve.

And this isn’t a time to be modest about your potential value to the company. “Tell the company why you are worth more than you are being offered. Show them how you will contribute to the company’s profits and help their bottom line,” advises Delecki. everythinglake.com 7

How to protect your pet from the obesity epidemic

(BPT) - The most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that more than one-third, or 78.6 million, of U.S. adults are obese. While the issue is wellrecognized among the public, many don’t realize there is a second obesity epidemic occurring simultaneously - a pet obesity epidemic, which is even more severe. Research from the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention shows an estimated 52.6 percent of dogs and 57.6 percent of cats in the U.S. are overweight or obese. These numbers are at an all-time high, according to the Banfield Report, which says that 37 percent more dogs and 90 percent more cats are obese today than just five years ago. So how do you know if your pet is overweight or obese? Pet360.com contributor Patrick Mahoney, VMD, points to the following signs to look out for: * Excess fat covering the ribs - A thick layer of fat inhibits easy feeling of the ribs. * Lack of a waistline - When looking down on your pet from above, there is a lack of visible narrowing just behind the last rib.

8 everythinglake.com

* Pendulous abdominal fat - Fatty tissue dangles from the underside of your pet’s abdomen, which may even swing while your pet is walking or running. Just like with people, obesity can lead to other health complications in pets. Veterinarian and pet health expert Dr. Jennifer Coates notes that overweight pets are at an increased risk for multiple health conditions, including ligament ruptures, intervertebral disk disease, osteoarthritis, congestive heart failure, dermatological disorders, infections, heat exhaustion and heat stroke, as well as complications during surgery and some types of cancer. “The complications that can arise from obesity in pets are just as detrimental to their health as for people who are obese,” says Dr. Ellen Lowery, associate director of U.S. Veterinary and Professional Affairs at Hill’s Pet Nutrition, which manufactures Hill’s Prescription Diet Metabolic Advanced Weight Solution. The specialized line of products work together to ensure safe and healthy weight loss and easy weight maintenance, and is available alongside other pet food options from Hill’s. “Pet parents should consult with their veterinary healthcare team to

How to protect your pet from the obesity epidemic first determine whether their pet is in its ideal weight range, and if not, what the best weight management strategy should be to support a longer, healthier and happier life.” One tool that vets can use to conduct a pet weight assessment is the Hill’s Healthy Weight Protocol, which was developed by Hill’s and the University of Tennessee for veterinary professionals to more accurately determine an estimated ideal body weight for overweight pets. It is also used to calculate the best range of caloric intake for a weight-loss program. The calculator allows the veterinary healthcare team to create a feeding and monitoring plan that is simple for pet owners to follow. Additional tools, such as PetMD’s Healthy Weight Calculator, can help pet parents learn about proper weight management and key questions to ask their veterinarian. Pet parents should commit to a daily exercise schedule that provides consistent activities for their pets. For dogs, workouts could include a brisk walk outdoors or a game of fetch. As much as cats enjoy their snooze time they can still get in some exercise through toys and games. It’s important to also pay attention to the feeding guidelines on pet food packaging,

which are intended to instruct on the proper feeding portions for pets in certain weight ranges. This, of course, is a general recommendation and should be modified to reflect your pet’s daily activity level as well as any extra calories he is getting from treats, which should be no more than 10 percent of the pet’s total calories for the day. Your veterinarian can help determine how many calories your pet should be given daily and how many calories they can receive in treats. Therapeutic pet foods, typically available through your vet, are also an option for healthy weight loss and management. The Hill’s Prescription Diet Metabolic Advanced Weight Solution for instance, works with each pet’s unique metabolism to deliver the right amount of essential nutrients your pet needs while keeping them full and satisfied between meals. In real-world testing with pet owners and their pets at home, 88 percent of pets lost weight over two months. Pet parents should think of their pets’ health in the same way they view their own and incorporate nutritious food and physical activity into their daily routine for healthy weight management.

“i have a dream” Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King was a Baptist minister and a social activist who lead the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950’s. He worked for equal rights until the day of his assassination in 1968. King was a gifted speech giver and very good student. At age 15 he was admitted to Morehouse College where he studied medicine and law. While the King family were living in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks refused to give her bus seat to a white passenger and was arrested. Activists chose Martin Luther King Jr. as their protest leader when many citizens boycotted the public bus system.

In 1963 King lead one of the most important freedom marches during the Civil Rights campaign. This march was called the March on Washington, this event eventually lead to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. After this march, King gave his most famous speech, the “I Have A Dream” at the Lincoln Memorial. Later that year King was awarded the TIME magazine Man of the Year award. And in 1964, King became the youngest person ever to win the Nobel Peace Prize. 4 years later on an evening in Memphis, King was shot and killed when he was standing on his hotel balcony. The shooter was James Earl Ray, an escaped convict who plead guilty to the murder and was sentenced to 99 years in prison. He died in 1998. In 1986, after years of campaigning by many activists and congressmen, President Ronald Reagan signed a bill making a federal holiday to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Day is celebrated on the third Monday of January and was first celebrated in 1986.

Learn how to combat symptoms this cold and flu season (BPT) - Nurse Barb Dehn offers tips on how to get the rest you need to stay healthy this cold, cough and flu season. A majority (73.8 percent) of people include sleep among their primary therapies when suffering from a cold or flu, according to a survey from the makers of Vicks NyQuil and DayQuil Severe, but resting may be difficult, as more than half of the respondents said their ability to sleep well is negatively affected when suffering from a respiratory illness. When a cold or flu strikes, Nurse Barb Dehn, R.N., M.S., N.P, practicing Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner and Vicks Spokesperson, offers these helpful tips to get you the rest you need to fight the worst cold and flu symptoms: * Take a hot shower before bed. Steam and humidity can help sinuses to drain and relieve stuffiness from a cold. It can also help you to relax. Put your towel and/or bathrobe in the dryer so that you don’t feel chilled when you get out, and make sure the room is nice and warm. * Elevate the head of the bed. Use a large, wedge-shaped pillow to raise the upper body from the waist up in order to allow blood to flow away from the head and reduce inflammation of the air passages. Make sure not to raise the body more than six inches to avoid sliding out of the bed.

* Take a nighttime multi-symptom medication. My patients want fast, effective relief to help them get back to their busy lives. Look for a medication that can treat the toughest symptoms while also helping you rest. NyQuil Severe fights your worst cold and flu symptoms so you can get the rest you need to get back to being you. There is also DayQuil Severe for cold and flu suffers, who want to power through their day. For more information, visit www.vicks.com. * Sleep on a schedule. Go to bed and wake up on a regular schedule. Plus, avoid stimulating beverages like caffeinated coffee or alcohol before going to sleep, as well as bright light from the screens on your phone, TV or other electronic devices. * Try tea. Drinking an herbal tea such as chamomile, passionflower or other soothing teas before bed can help you relax while also getting helpful fluids into your system.

5 financial fitness habits to begin in the new year

(BPT) - While many people focus on personal health goals in the new year, the beginning of the year is also a great time to check your financial fitness. So how can you whip your finances into shape? South University College of Business, Virginia Beach faculty member Dr. Alan Harper says everyone should adopt these five financial habits in 2015: Establish a budget Harper says the first step in taking control of your finances is to establish a budget. “It is extremely important to know how much money is coming in, where it’s going, and allocating it appropriately,” he says. “Having a budget allows you to gain a broader understanding of your spending habits.” Make sure your budget includes allowances for food, clothing, gas, and even entertainment, Harper advises. Start saving Your budget should also include money set aside for emergencies. Harper says the old rule-of-thumb that three month’s salary is 12 everythinglake.com

enough to have in your bank account no longer applies in our current economy. “We found in the last recession that people who lost their jobs tended to stay out of work much longer than three months,” he says. “You should have six months to a year’s worth of income in savings, just in case.” Harper says you should also try to put away 15 percent of your take-home income toward your retirement. Many retirement savings options are available, including 401(k)s, Roth IRAs and individual retirement accounts. It is important to do your homework before deciding on a long-term investment strategy so that you are aware of terms, conditions and any fees associated with your options. Manage your credit The beginning of the year is a perfect time to check your credit history, and to look for any mistakes on your credit report, Harper advises. Mistakes on your credit report can cost you large sums of money in interest rates, or even keep you from being approved for a loan.

5 financial fitness habits to begin in the new year “The law requires the three major credit reporting agencies to provide you with one free credit report a year,” Harper says. “Pull those reports and look for discrepancies. If you find one, file a dispute with the credit reporting agency and they will remove the item if it is incorrect.” Harper also says to check your FICO score on the report, make sure you have an understanding of what the score means, and how to improve it if the score is low. Shop smart Make it a priority to save money while you shop, Harper says. He encourages clipping coupons, and says purchasing membership cards to discount stores like Sam’s Club and Costco can help you save money over time. “Those stores will save you money in the long run on purchases like food, gas, and even personal care items.” Check your insurance

Setting aside time at the beginning of the year to check your insurance policies can also save you money. Harper advises that you should review your auto, home and life insurance to make sure you have the proper coverage. “You want to make sure you aren’t paying for coverage that you may no longer need, but you also want to make sure you have adequate coverage in case there is an accident or you need to make a claim,” he says. Many companies also offer discounted rates if you hold multiple policies with them. So, if your auto, home and life insurance policies are with different companies, you may want to explore the benefits of choosing just one company. “It’s also important to make sure your life insurance policies are sufficient to protect your family from a financial crisis in the event that something happens to you,” Harper notes. “Establishing a budget, saving, staying on top of credit and insurance, and shopping smart all take some work,” Harper points out. “But the rewards to your personal and household bottom line are well worth the effort.”

The best New Year’s resolution? Don’t make one

(BPT) - In 2014, the most popular New Year’s resolutions included losing weight and getting in shape, according to a study by the University of Scranton. If your health resolutions from last year have fallen by the wayside, you’re not alone. Don’t let last year repeat itself. Instead of setting large goals, focus on staying physically active and making healthier choices year round. “This year, abandon making a resolution in exchange for small, sustainable steps to get you on the road to a healthy lifestyle,” says Jessica Fishman Levinson, an active member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, as well as a consultant for food and beverage companies, including The Coca-Cola Company. 14 everythinglake.com

“I encourage my clients to focus on making small changes, such as adding one workout a week to their schedule and enjoying their favorite food or beverage every so often. Long-term changes will happen when you make specific goals that are small enough to achieve without getting off course.” Levinson shares some ideas to help you incorporate small changes into your lifestyle that can make a big difference over the years: * Stay on the move: Are there weeks in which you get plenty of exercise and others in which you struggle to find even a few spare minutes to move? The solution: Find creative ways to stay active that can fit into your busy routine.

The best New Year’s resolution? Don’t make one Take the stairs instead of an elevator, spend a few minutes raking leaves off your front lawn or simply park the car farther from the store and walk whenever possible. Exercise helps relieve stress and burn off extra calories, so make sure to get in your daily dose of physical activity. * Smaller serving sizes for a smaller waistline: A balanced diet is the key to managing your weight loss. Eliminating your favorite foods and beverages can backfire. Remember you can enjoy the foods and beverages you love, just enjoy them on occasion or better yet look for smaller portion sizes. If you’re a soda lover, try the 7.5-ounce Coca-Cola mini can, which comes in a variety of flavors including CocaCola, Diet Coke and Coke Zero. * Smart snacking on-the-go: If you’re constantly on-the-go, it can be tough to choose healthy foods and beverages. Plan ahead and consider packing portioncontrolled “to-go” snacks or a serving of fruit before heading out the door. You’ll be happy to have those more nutritious snacks when faced with the temptation of high-calorie foods and beverages. Small snacks throughout the day can also keep your metabolism up and prevent you from overeating at mealtime.

* Feel great with eight: Sleep is essential to the body for maintaining energy. Maintaining a regular sleep-wake cycle (circadian rhythm) as well as passing through the various stages of sleep is important. You should plan on getting at least seven to eight hours of sleep per night. A good night’s rest will make it easier for you to stay active and eat well. * Track your success: Need an encouraging way to maintain a healthy lifestyle and be motivated to work harder? Writing down your daily food and beverage intake and physical activity is an effective tool because you’ll be able to keep track of your progress. All kinds of technologies are available to help you do so. Look for apps or fitness trackers to help you stay honest. In 2015, skip the resolution and avoid the guilt that comes with missing your goal. With these simple tips, you will be able to increase your success and have many healthy years ahead.

5 health improvements you can make today that will pay off for a lifetime (BPT) Improving your health and wellness can seem like a daunting task, especially if you know you have some bad health habits to break. But, several improvements you can make today can result in tremendous health benefits. “It starts with you,” says physician assistant Tricia A. Howard, a faculty member at South University, Savannah’s College of Health Professions. “You have more control over your health than you think you do.”

you and those you love.”

“Even if you’ve smoked for many years, you can reduce your lung cancer risks just by quitting,” says Howard. “And this isn’t just about your own health. Smoking puts the ones you love at risk, because even second-hand smoke can cause cancer. So, quitting is a win-win for

Here are five steps you can take today that can have a positive impact on your overall health and wellness.

Howard says people who want to quit smoking do better when they set a target date to quit. She also advises working with your primary health care provider who can actually individualize a stop-smoking plan for you. And, Howard says getting support from others is a crucial part of the battle.

Stop smoking

Increase your water intake

Everyone knows smoking is bad for you. In fact, people who smoke have by far the greatest risk of lung cancer - the number one cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. - and increased risk of a cardiac event. But, many people don’t realize that changes in the lungs caused by smoking can actually improve over time once a smoker quits.

Sixty percent of your body weight is water. Your body depends on water to carry nutrients to cells and to flush toxins out of vital organs, so getting the right amount of fluids each day is crucial.

5 health improvements you can make today that will pay off for a lifetime

Howard says men should drink 3 liters, or 13 cups, per day. For women, the recommendation is 2.2 liters, or 9 cups, per day. If that recommendation seems tough to follow, Howard says to divide it up throughout the day. “Make sure you have water with every meal and also drink water at least once between each meal,” she suggests. “That divides up your fluid intake and can make the amount seem less daunting.” And, Howard says you don’t have to stick to water. Milk, coffee, and other drinks that contain a lot of water and not a lot of calories count towards your daily fluid intake. Exercise “Exercise reduces your risk for chronic disease, improves balance and coordination and helps with weight loss,” Howard says. “Exercise is a key part of living a healthy life.” Howard says the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends 150 minutes a week of moderate exercise, or 90 minutes of vigorous exercise a week, for adults. “That sounds like a lot,” Howard acknowledges. “But, if you break it into 15-or20-minute daily workouts it’s much easier to fit into your schedule. You don’t have to spend hours at a time in the gym to reap the benefits.” Howard says recent studies have shown that even short bursts of exercise can be helpful.

of numerous studies show long-term health benefits to adopting the diet. “This is a diet filled with antioxidants and anti-inflammatories,” Howard explains. “This diet has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer when adhered to long-term. Weight loss and improvement in cholesterol can be seen after just a few months.” Have your cholesterol checked You might be surprised to learn that you should begin having your cholesterol monitored by a doctor at age 20. But since coronary artery disease is the number one cause of death in the U.S., it’s a recommendation you should take seriously. “There is no reason to avoid having your cholesterol checked,” Howard says. “If your cholesterol levels aren’t where they should be, you can change them.” Howard says levels that are too high can be controlled by diet, quitting smoking, exercise, and even prescription medication. “There are so many things we can do to improve not only the length of our life, but the quality of those years,” Howard encourages. “Don’t wait. Commit today to making a few small changes, and see how they improve your health over time.” VINTAGE • ANTIQUE • PRIMATIVE • SHABBY •

Can the power of positive thinking change your life?

(BPT) - A positive attitude is one of the most powerful assets you can have. Positive people find success, good health, happiness, wealth and rewarding relationships throughout their lives. This is not because they are already successful, or because they are more confident, it is simply the attitude. The law of attraction is that positive thoughts lead to positive results. Your thoughts are much more powerful than just electric signals between synapses. They have the ability to define you and affect those around you. However, it’s not easy to summon this way of thinking on command. It may take years of patience and practice to change your overall mentality. Learn from the example of others. “Early leaders in the United States understood the true meaning of positive thinking,” says Stanley Murphy, department chair for the Graduate School of Business and Management at Argosy University, Nashville. “It is one aspect of the root of their success. Philip D. Armour, F.W. Woolworth, Thomas A. Edison, Marshall Field, Andrew Carnegie, Napoleon Hill and

a host of other movers and shakers who participated in shaping our country in the early 20th century all understood these two powerful words: positive thinking.” It is true that the most successful people throughout history have all recognized the power of positive thinking. Even Gandhi was a strong advocate of positive thinking. He is reported to have said, “A man is but the product of his thoughts; what he thinks, he becomes.” So what are some proven methods to developing mastery in positive thinking? Well for starters, believe that you can become a positive thinker. “Invest and commit yourself to your own personal development,” suggests Murphy. “You must first believe in yourself. When you do, you will notice that others believe in you too. Examine how you are investing in yourself. Make note in your observation of yourself. See if your personal

Can the power of positive thinking change your life? investments are constructive or destructive. If they are destructive, then try to eliminate them. If constructive, then perfect them.” R. Brian Salinas, professor at Argosy University, San Francisco Bay Area recommends interacting with people who are on the same journey, whether they are ahead or behind. “People project who they are and you will too. You’ll start to pick up their traits and ways of approaching things,” says Salinas. “Read books that talk about handling the lessons and challenges that come up in life and that mirror those you want to overcome in yours. In a few years, you’ll find that your story of triumph over adversity mirrors those you read about.”

Also, try to be realistic. Everyone has down moments, and that’s alright. “Positive attitude is more than the sum of your feelings at any particular moment. If a loved one passes away or you are facing a challenge that feels overwhelming at the moment, it doesn’t mean that you’re not a positive person,” adds Salinas. “Positive people have every right to feel sad. It’s even healthy to express those feelings from timeto-time. Just remember that those moments don’t define us.”

Consider the physical aspects as well. Try to incorporate the practice of daily meditation (a minimum of 20 minutes a day) suggests Murphy. “Take care of your body and it will take care of you. Moderate exercise, balanced diet and adequate rest will keep you physically fit for your daily task.”

5 questions you should ask your pharmacist

(BPT) - A visit to the pharmacy can be about more than just picking up prescriptions or supplies for the medicine cabinet. It can actually be an important, and convenient, time to ask your pharmacist key questions that could impact your health. Dr. Andria Fetterman, a faculty member in South University Savannah’s School of Pharmacy, encourages people to use their pharmacist as a resource for information about everything from prescription medication to lifestyle changes. Fetterman says there are five key questions you should frequently ask your pharmacist. What can I expect from this medication? Fetterman says whether you’re picking up an 22 everythinglake.com

over-the-counter remedy or a prescription, you should feel free to ask your pharmacist what to expect from the medication. “Many medications have potential side effects that you should be aware of before you take them,” advises Fetterman. “It may be something as mild as a little stomach discomfort or drowsiness, but knowing what to expect will help you handle any potential side effects. Also, knowing what to expect could keep you from blaming any new, unrelated symptoms on your medication.” You should also ask how long it will take for your medication to make you feel better. Fetterman says most antibiotics should have you feeling better in three to five days, but an anti-depressant may need to be in your

need for prescription medication altogether.”

How long should I take an over the counter medication before I call my doctor?

“Dietary supplements, herbal supplements and over-the-counter medicines can interact or interfere with prescription medications. When you are having a prescription filled, your pharmacist should ask you about all other medications that you’re taking. If you’re on prescription medication, check with the pharmacist before beginning any new overthe-counter supplements or medication to make sure it is safe.”

Over-the-counter medicines can provide relief for a number of ailments, but sometimes you need to see a doctor either for a prescription or a correct diagnosis of your symptoms. Fetterman says your pharmacist can help guide you when you’re not sure if it is time to see a doctor. “A pharmacist can give you advice on how quickly you should see symptom relief with an over-the-counter medication,” says Fetterman. “Many times, people will treat themselves too long with over-the-counter medicine or will switch from one product to another looking for relief, and many times don’t go to a physician when they need to.” How do I manage my condition? “When someone leaves the doctor’s office after a diagnosis, they may be scared or shell-shocked,” Fetterman explains. “There may be questions about medication or daily management that they didn’t think to ask. That’s where a pharmacist can help.” Fetterman uses Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure as examples. “A pharmacist can counsel you about weight loss, healthy eating and ways to promote cardiovascular activity. With proper disease management, some patients can actually reduce or eliminate their

Do these medicines mix? Fetterman says it is important to ask a pharmacist about whether any new medication will mix well with other things you are already taking.

What should I do about my persistent, minor symptoms? Fetterman says you should never hesitate to ask a pharmacist about a persistent, minor symptom that might be bothering you. “If you’re having a non-specific or persistent symptom that you think is minor, you should still ask your pharmacist about it,” says Fetterman. “A pharmacist can recommend an over-the-counter medicine that may relieve symptoms, but can also advise you to see a doctor about your symptom rather than ignoring it. “A pharmacist can be a great source of health information. All you have to do is ask.”

6 design trends to heighten your home’s style in 2015

(BPT) - As the new year kicks off, it’s the premier time to refresh and refocus on certain aspects of your life ... and the home is no exception. Say goodbye to lackluster interiors as renowned interior designer and DIY television personality, Taniya Nayak, has forecasted the top trends for 2015 that will be sure to enhance and revive any home.

“2015 is all about you,” Nayak explains. “Hanging a variety of frames or objects in a well thought-out cluster on the wall provides the perfect place to showcase pieces that are important and meaningful. When people walk into your home, they’ll know exactly what you love.”

Deep, rich hues Be bold with shadowy and opulent tones; there are many ways to infuse a rich color scheme into your space. “Don’t be intimidated by dark hues,” says Nayak. “Incorporate shades from the same color family throughout a room with a coordinating accent wall, rug and decorative pieces - such as pillows and blankets. This creates a bold, yet harmonizing visual.” “The concept of a ‘pop’ of color is blown up in 2015,” adds Nayak. “We’re seeing deep, rich hues adorning walls, lavishly upholstered furniture pieces, window treatments and area rugs. This year, we like to say ‘go bold or go home.’” When painting with deep colors, imperfections are more visible than with lighter shades. To ensure your painting project is flawless, use FrogTape brand painter’s tape to achieve sharp paint lines. The tape is treated with patented PaintBlock Technology, which prevents paint bleed, leaving you with an impressive, crisp edge. Gallery walls Create a room that’s uniquely yours by making a gallery wall with items of your choice. Display an array of mirrors, framed family photos, sketches or even postcards - the key is to be creative and be yourself! 24 everythinglake.com

Bold patterns in neutral colors Although neutrals provide a calm palette, it’s possible to infuse bold statements into these rooms, as well, with the use of patterns. Revitalize your room with a geometric rug in an earth tone, and also add window treatments with a daring floral design in a

an impressive, outdoorsy aesthetic. “It’s easy to bring nature and organic structures into your home,” Nayak assures. “Leave linear styles out of the equation. Instead, think of free flowing shapes, colors found in nature and the peaceful serenity associated with the outdoors. The goal is to evoke the same emotional responses throughout your home.”

“This is a beautiful way to add drama and what appears to be ‘texture’ to a space,” adds Nayak. 60s mod The retro panache of mid-century modern decor will perk up rooms with its soft, sculptural lines, woven upholstery and bright accessories in geometric shapes. Search for vintage furniture pieces like rounded chairs and button-cushion couches with short, tapered legs to add a sense of authenticity. “We are going retro mod - way back to the 60s where design was about curvy forms, vibrant colors and eccentric patterns,” Nayak says. “Be prepared to leave your design fears at the door and go full throttle with the bright and loud elements found in the mod movement. “ Organic elements This year, mount antlers above your mantel; or create centerpieces with shells, metallic leaves or branches for a rustic vibe. With these earthy components juxtaposed against woodsy furniture and ivory tones, you’ll create

Copper “Each year we see a particular metal rise to the top of every designer’s list; and this year, it’s all about copper,” Nayak says. Copper is a captivating metallic that adds a modern edge to even the simplest scheme. Small pieces make a big statement, so subtly pepper in copper pieces to your decor, like light fixtures, planters or table settings. Display copper cookware in your kitchen - it’s a great way to add a touch of glamour without being gaudy. 2015 is full of impressive design trends. Use Nayak’s expertise, and this year, your home will serve as a canvas for self-expression, creativity and style. everythinglake.com 25

Why you should consider the Mediterranean diet

(BPT) - A healthy diet can be the foundation of a healthy life. While there are many food choices and diet options, one diet consistently grabs the attention of researchers. “The Mediterranean diet has been, and continues to be, studied widely,” says physician assistant Tricia A. Howard, a faculty member at South University, Savannah’s College of Health Professions. “I would recommend considering the Mediterranean diet to anyone who wants to make a healthy lifestyle change.” The Mediterranean diet is named after the geographical part of the world where most people consume plentiful amounts of fruits, vegetables, olive oil, nuts and fish. “This is a diet high in antioxidants and antiinflammatories, which have many important health benefits,” explains Howard. Some of the benefits of the Mediterranean diet can be seen quickly. Howard says many patients see improvement in cholesterol levels and begin to lose weight within a few months of adopting the diet. Numerous research 26 everythinglake.com

studies show that the long-term benefits include a decreased risk of heart disease and some types of cancer. But Howard cautions that the Mediterranean diet is not about quick fixes. Instead, it is a lifestyle change that you need to follow consistently for years in order to reap all the benefits. “To get the many health benefits numerous researchers have found come with this diet, you must commit to it,” Howard explains. “Following this diet and benefiting from it is really about deciding that you are ready to take control of your health and about being willing to make substantial changes in how you eat and what you cook. “A lot of wonderful foods are included in the Mediterranean diet,” says Howard. “But, red meat is not part of the diet, and that can make it tough for some people to strictly adhere to it.”

Why you should consider the Mediterranean diet

Howard says even if you can’t strictly follow the Mediterranean diet, everyone should try to incorporate as many aspects of it as they can into their daily diet. “Substituting things in your diet that you know aren’t the healthiest choices and replacing them with foods found in the Mediterranean diet is a smart decision,” Howard says. “And, it may help you begin the process of moving away from an unhealthy diet and towards one that has been proven repeatedly to have benefits. “Choosing foods from the Mediterranean diet is definitely a step in the right direction.”

Continuing education provides competitive edge for job-hunters

(BPT) - More Americans than ever are going back to school, continuing their education to add skills and credentials to their work portfolio. For many, keeping their expertise current with continuing education gives them the edge in a competitive job market. Continuing education is not the same as going back to school to complete an unfinished degree, notes Dr. Marianne Greenfield, program chair at Argosy University, Atlanta. “Continuing education generally refers to any type of post-secondary education for the purpose of keeping current with changes in a particular field of study or for preparation to obtain a certification,” she says. “Some professions require that you earn continuingeducation credits in order to maintain a license. The goal of continuing education is to offer adults who already possess a college or university degree further opportunity for learning without having to enroll in a degree program.” “Now more than ever, it’s important for employees and professionals to keep up with 28 everythinglake.com

all the latest skills and relevant knowledge necessary to compete in today’s workforce,” says Dr. George Spagnola, chair of the College of Education at Argosy University, Sarasota. “While a traditional education is necessary in today’s workforce, it is also a cornerstone upon which one can build a better future through continuing education.” Greenfield agrees. “As more people obtain academic degrees, candidates whose skills and knowledge are current and relevant in the workplace will have the greater advantage,” she says. “Continuing education is especially important in areas such as human resources, engineering, technology, finance and health care, where rapid advances occur, leading to constantly evolving practices.” Many professions require candidates to have certifications and licenses to qualify for employment opportunities, so continuing education is important for job-seekers and professionals in those fields. Fortunately, it’s easier than ever to continue your education.

Continuing education provides competitive edge for job-hunters “Advances in technology have made continuing education more accessible,” says Spagnola. “You can pursue continuing education online, at a physical location or in a combination of both. Technology can help you continue your education and advance your professional knowledge while working and raising a family.” Given the number of people raising families and working, that flexibility of education can be key to achieving success. Look for an institution or provider that can meet your educational needs while still allowing you to meet your personal and professional obligations. “Seek out a student-centered institution that meets your needs both academically and nonacademically,” says Spagnola. “Although many course providers cater to those seeking continuing education, it is important to find an accredited institution to ensure your efforts yield results,” says Greenfield. “Look for programs that offer you access to and learning from quality instructors with real-life experience in the specific field of study. Make sure that the program

you are considering is compatible with any requirements you will face for licensure.” And while educational costs are always a concern, many people can find financial assistance in the form of tuition-assistance programs offered through their employers. “Tuition-assistance programs are of huge benefit to employees and the company,” says Spagnola. “As an employee, you receive financial assistance for your education. Your employer, in turn, gets an employee who is advancing their knowledge and skills and applying them to the organization.” “The benefits far outweigh the expense and many private sector employers will pay for or reimburse the expense if a compelling case is made for the added competitive advantage for the organization,” agrees Greenfield. “And if your employer isn’t able to assist you with the costs, the Internal Revenue Service allows you to deduct a portion of qualifying continuingeducation expenses on your federal tax return. If you pay the expense on behalf of a spouse or a dependent child, you can also claim the deduction.”

Waiting until the last minute causes undue stress, and rushing 30 everythinglake.com

increases potential for typos and overlooked information. While you can do your taxes in one fell swoop, it’s unnecessary. Tax programs save as you go, so you can stop and finish at your leisure. You may reap benefits from starting early - as soon as October (when TaxACT releases its solutions) - because tax programs point out potential savings requiring action before Dec. 31 or April 15. Second, gather all your tax forms and documents before starting your return, including: * Form W-2 from your employer (you should receive by Jan. 31) * Form 1099s if you’re self-employed or a contractor * Form 1098-E from your lender if you’ve paid student loan interest (even if you don’t receive this form, you can still deduct interest paid). * Form 1098-T for tuition paid and scholarships or grants received * Statements for retirement savings accounts * Receipts for charitable donations After filing, keep these papers or make electronic copies to save with a copy of your return. Finally, carefully compare top DIY tax products before choosing one. Read expert and user reviews. Look at the situations and tax forms each includes, as some require you to upgrade for certain forms. If you have to file a state return, compare prices. Using a mobile filing app? Choose one that also provides access to your data on a browser for convenience and peace of mind in case you lose your smartphone or tablet. Dolmage offers another tip for tax refunds: “To avoid delays, e-file your return and have your refund direct deposited into your bank account.”
