from the publisher’s desk Al Asghar May was a real busy month. We did our annual swimsuit issue. I want to thank all our models for their hard work. These ladies rocked it! Also, Lake Tech in Eustis sent beauticians to help with this project. These ladies were energetic and talented. I also want to give a shoot out to Hurricane Dockside Grill for letting us use their facility for this shoot. So, thank you everyone. Also this month, I had a chance to go taste the food of inspiring chefs coming through our high school. These young adults are as talented as they come. Good looking delicious good food. What else can a man ask for? The radio show, Everything Lake Magazine Hour on my790am.com is rocking. We have added a feature that brings in a local musician to the studio and he or she rocks out the airwaves. Thank you for your great feedback.

Dress for success: tips for building a professional wardrobe (BPT) - Whether you are a recent grad or someone re-entering a professional work environment, building a work wardrobe that strikes a balance between professionalism and personal style is key. “Dress for the job you want, not the job you’re being hired for,” says Stephanie Thomas, fashion instructor at The Art Institute of California - Los Angeles, a campus of Argosy University. “Your job description, and that of the next step up your career ladder, should be the driving force behind your apparel purchases,” adds Stephanie Pierotti, fashion instructor at The Arts Institute of Las Vegas. To get you started, fashion experts from The Art Institutes system of schools offer tips to have you dressing for the corner office. Suit up “I know it sounds boring, but a suit is an absolute must,” says Thomas. “Look upon your suit purchase as a long term investment,” adds Pierotti. “This is not an area where you’ll want to skimp. Seasonless fabrics, like lightweight wool, worsted wool and wool crepe are your best bets.” She recommends purchasing a suit in a classic color such as black, gray, tan or navy blue and saving the more trendy colors and patterns for your accessories.
pants and a skirt will offer more variety. You should also feel comfortable in your suit. A good fit will make you look polished, professional and more confident. “The chances of you finding a suit that fits you perfectly off the rack is slim to none, so be sure to budget some funds for tailoring,” says Thomas. Wardrobe building blocks You will also need some staples that will serve as wardrobe building blocks that enable you to walk right into a new job. “Women should purchase two or three button-down shirts of a good fit and quality. Men may want to purchase five, if buttondowns are a staple in their field,” says Pierotti. For women, a wrap dress is a great alternative to pants and a button down. Women can also incorporate knit shirts that will mix and match with their suit separates. Continued on page 23
Thomas says to also think about the colors in your current wardrobe and look for a suit that can be interchangeable with pieces you already own. For women, a suit with both

When disaster strikes, will your pets be safe? Preparedness tips for pet parents (BPT) - Americans living in areas prone to severe storms, floods, earthquakes or other natural disasters may be well aware of the philosophy, “Hope for the best, but plan for the worst.” Families with a disaster plan in place will be better equipped to stay safe and recover from an emergency. Too often, however, even the best planners forget to include provisions for the four-legged members of the family. “When disaster strikes, families may not have much time to act,” says Dr. Ellen I. Lowery, associate director of U.S. professional and veterinary affairs at Hill’s Pet Nutrition. “While organizations like Hill’s, through our Disaster Relief Network, strive to help families and pets in the wake of natural disasters, it’s important to have a disaster plan ready, including a wellstocked Pet Emergency Go-Kit with food, water and other essentials for your pet.” Dr. Lowery offers some guidance for putting your “Pet Emergency Go-Kit” together: * Include first aid supplies and a first aid guide book for pets. * Keep three-day supplies of both your pet’s favorite food - in a waterproof container - and bottled water. * Store an extra safety harness and leash because even the best-behaved pet may be frightened in an emergency, causing him to run and hide. * Include waste cleanup supplies. It’s important to properly dispose of pet waste to avoid adding health concerns to an already difficult situation. * If your pet is on any medications, keep a few days’ worth in your kit. Also include an up-to8 everythinglake.com
date copy of medical records, as well as contact information for your veterinarian and additional veterinary and pet care organizations in your area. * You should have a brief, written explanation of your pet’s feeding routine, personality and any behavioral issues. In a disaster, your pet may receive care from someone who doesn’t know him as well as you do. * Don’t forget comfort - include a few toys and a favorite blanket to keep your pet comfortable. Keep your Pet Go-Kit somewhere readily accessible in an emergency. Be sure your pet always wears his/her identification - a microchip or collar ID tag with up-to-date information may help reunite you with your pet if you become separated in the confusion of a disaster scene.

When disaster strikes, will your pets be safe? Preparedness tips for pet parents If an impending disaster requires you to evacuate, take your pet with you. Be aware of your pet’s favorite hiding places so you’ll know where to look when you’re in a hurry to leave. Before disaster strikes, identify locations where you could take your pet during an evacuation; not all disaster shelters for people will be open to pets. Look for pet-friendly hotels or motels, or ask relatives and friends if they could accommodate you and your pets. Despite your best efforts, it may not be possible to take your pet with you. To alert first responders to the possible presence of a pet in the house, place a pet rescue decal on your front door or window. It should include your veterinarian’s contact information and any special notes about your pet’s personality or medical needs. Carry a picture of your pet in case you become separated.
“Pet displacement during natural disasters is such a serious issue, the federal government has even enacted standards for evacuating and transporting pets during disasters,” Dr. Lowery says. “One widely quoted report cited Hurricane Katrina as an example of what can happen to pets during a natural disaster. The report said more than 200,000 pets were displaced during the storm, and the majority of them were never reunited with their families.” Last year, Hill’s launched the Disaster Relief Network, a first-of-its-kind national system that allows the company to quickly coordinate pet food deliveries in response to natural disasters. Since its inception, the network has delivered free food to more than 50 shelters and veterinary clinics in response to floods, forest fires, tornados and mudslides. High School Chef-Hopefuls Converge at Leesburg High for Culinary Competition Story & Photos by Al Asghar Aspiring chefs from area high schools faced off in an annual culinary competition at Leesburg High School on Monday, May 12. Five competing schools: Eustis High School, Leesburg High School, Mount Dora High School, The Villages High School and Umatilla High School competed for the honor of being the best high school chefs in Lake County. The kids brought their A game to this competition. At the end, after three hours of cooking, one by one, they brought their dishes to the judges. The dishes were creative, well plated and delicious. This made it even harder for the judges. After a long debate, by a narrow margin, the judges decided that the Villages High School were the winners. Now the dishes were displayed and offered to the public. This part of the tasting was also judged. Ballots were turned in by the public and when the tally was done we had another winner. Again, this was a narrow margin of victory. Leesburg High School was the winner. At the end, all the dishes were on point and very creative. If this is what these kids are putting out at this stage of their careers, I cannot wait to try what they will have to offer the public in the future.

Secrets to the perfect backyard grilled menu (BPT) - The grill is a big part of summer fare, whether you’re enjoying a delicious dinner in a restaurant or barbecuing in your backyard. If you want to increase your expertise in perfecting flaky-tender fish or mouth-watering steaks at home, here are some industry secrets that will have your family asking for your special dish every night of the week. “Every restaurant chef has secret tips to ensure the ingredients and flavors used in grilling will result in a spectacular meal,” says Chef Mark Adair of Bonefish Grill. “This is especially true when it comes to grilling seafood. People are often afraid of grilling fish, but it turns into a light and healthy entree that combines beautifully with so many pairings.” Try these grilling tips from Bonefish Grill to create mouth-watering smells that will waft through the neighborhood and have neighbors knocking on the door for a dinner invitation. And, if you are in need of a night off, Bonefish Grill invites you to stop by for wood-grilled fish and other specialties, innovative cocktails, a polished casual atmosphere and topnotch service. You won’t want to miss a taste of the Big Bang Shrimp, which is often imitated but never duplicated. Wood-fired grills add interesting wood flavors to foods, especially fish. This can enhance the flavor of your meal. It might take you a bit of time to understand your grill and to fully master use of its hot and cold spots. 18 everythinglake.com
* Perfectly grilled seafood Seafood is delicate and it doesn’t take long to overcook. Keep a food thermometer handy and pull your fish off the grill when it reaches 130 to 135 degrees. Then let it rest for three to four minutes before serving. * Finding the right pairings
When it comes to wine and seafood, many variables can impact a pairing recommendation. If you are having friends over for dinner, keep in mind the personal tastes of everyone at the table, as well as the seasonings you’re using on the fish. Other factors that could change the type of wine include the type of fish being served, any sauces being used to enhance the flavor of the fish and even the cooking method you use. At Bonefish Grill, servers receive extensive wine training so they can make the best pairing recommendations for your table. Put these grilling secrets to the test. Try sharing the following salmon and mango salsa recipe with friends and family:

Centenarians reveal their secrets to a long, happy life (BPT) - One hundred years ago, the average American’s life expectancy was between 50 and 60 years, and so the estimated 53,000 centenarians in the United States today have lived much longer than most of their contemporaries. Perhaps that is why a new survey shows that these 100-year-olds feel “blessed” (36 percent), “happy” (31 percent) and “surprised” (12 percent) to have lived so long. Not one reports feeling sad or burdened; only 3 percent say they feel lonely. For the past nine years, UnitedHealthcare has conducted a survey of 100 100-year-olds to gain insight into their lives. For its most recent 100@100 survey, the company also polled 65-year-old baby boomers to examine how the attitudes and lifestyles of people entering their retirement years compare to those who hit that same age 35 years ago. According to the study, one thing both groups agreed on is that they feel younger than their years. On average, the centenarians surveyed said they feel just 83 years old, while 65-yearold baby boomers said they feel 55 years old. “It’s encouraging that older Americans feel more youthful than the number of candles on their birthday cake might suggest,” said Rhonda Randall, D.O., chief medical officer of UnitedHealthcare Retiree Solutions. UnitedHealthcare serves more than a quarter of America’s centenarians through its Medicare 20 everythinglake.com
plans. “By looking at how they are living their daily lives, we can glean important insights about the keys to staying healthy and feeling vibrant as we age.” The following are some of the secrets to healthy aging, as revealed by the 100@100 survey. Secret 1: Keep up with exercise. Despite their age, centenarians stay active: more than half walk or hike and nearly a third do strength-training exercises. Some even run outdoors or play team sports every week (4 percent). Exercise is an important part of boomers’ lifestyle as well. Nearly 3 in 4 walk or hike each week, 37 percent do strengthtraining exercises and 13 percent run outdoors or play team sports.
Centenarians reveal their secrets to a long, happy life Secret 2: Get preventive care to stay healthy. Older Americans are taking the saying “an ounce of prevention equals a pound of cure to heart by keeping up with preventive health care services to stay well. Nearly 9 in 10 get an annual exam (87 percent of centenarians and 89 percent of baby boomers) with their primary care physician, and the majority also report getting eye exams regularly (71 percent of centenarians and 76 percent of baby boomers). Secret 3: Maintain a positive attitude. Both centenarians and baby boomers say maintaining their physical health and a
positive attitude are equally important to successful aging (66 percent and 81 percent, respectively). In fact, 82 percent of centenarians say laughing/having a sense of humor is important to healthy aging. Perhaps the most important lesson revealed in the 100@100 survey findings is that living a long, healthy life is about more than just genetics. Daily habits and lifestyle choices can make a difference not only in how long people live but also in how they feel as they age. For more information on how to stay healthy beyond 65, visit nihseniorhealth.gov. For complete 100@100 survey results, visit the news room on UHC.com.

7 health myths that might surprise you (BPT) - Living a healthy life takes some resolve, but success often comes down to knowing what pays the biggest dividends for a given effort. Health coaches are great sources for this insight. They’ve seen it all on the job and learned a lot in their training. To honor Employee Health and Fitness Month in May, health coaches for workplace well-being leader Provant identified seven commonly held health and wellness myths drawn from their research and experience: Myth No. 1: An aerobic workout boosts your metabolism all day. Wrong, it just burns calories while you’re doing it. Musclestrengthening exercises, however, will burn calories long after your workout. Myth No. 2: If you don’t break a sweat, it’s not a workout. Wrong, sweat is just the body’s way of cooling itself. A better reflection of effort is the talk test: your workout is moderate if you can talk, but not sing, and vigorous if you need to take a breath every few words. Myth No. 3: You should stretch before you exercise. Not really, you could hurt yourself. Better to stretch after you’re warmed up with light, smooth movement of gradually increasing intensity. Myth No. 4: Frozen fruits and vegetables are less healthy than fresh ones. Actually, they’re both healthy. Frozen fruits and vegetables are generally picked and frozen at nutritional peak. Canned can be a fine choice if you’re 22 everythinglake.com
watching your budget. Avoid fruits packed in syrup. Myth No. 5: Cigars and chewing tobacco are safe because you don’t inhale. This is another myth. Cigar smokers have higher rates than nonsmokers of death from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and are four to 10 times more likely to die from cancers of the throat, mouth, lips, larynx and esophagus, according to the American Cancer Society. People who chew tobacco are more likely to develop oral cancers that affect the tongue, lips, cheeks and gums. Myth No. 6: Stress happens. There’s nothing you can do about it. Not true, stress doesn’t have to overwhelm you. There are several approaches to managing it. Set priorities and tackle simple problems first. Then move on to complex difficulties. Practice relaxation exercises. Make yourself more resilient by eating smart, exercising and avoiding tobacco. Myth No. 7: Cold turkey is the best way to quit tobacco. Nope. It’s just one of the ways to quit, and the more times you try to quit, the better your chances of succeeding. Research indicates to help improve success rates, you need: the desire and readiness to quit, some form of pharmacotherapy (nicotine replacement therapy or prescription medications) and social support (family, friends, health coach). Keep this information in mind as you go about improving your health, and most importantly, don’t give up.
Dress for success: For men, a sports jacket in an all-weather fabric is a good investment. “Think less trend, more modern classic that will cut across many seasons,” says Thomas. “Men and women need a great blazer and some type of sweater they can dress up or down.” Both men and women can mix in sweaters and cardigans to go with their separates. Pierotti advises, “Look for versatile items that can take you from desk to dinner and from workdays to weekends. Also consider a dark or black jean for casual days at the office.
“Investing in core pieces lays a solid foundation for your new professional wardrobe,” says Pierotti. “You’ll create a classic yet stylish work collection that makes you feel confident and professional.”
Shoes To put your best foot forward at a new job, make sure you also have professional footwear to go with your new wardrobe. Pierotti recommends two pairs of practical shoes for day-to-day work life and one or two for more formal events, in neutral colors such as brown, gray and black. And for women, 4 inches should be the maximum height for a professional setting. Accessories Don’t forget about accessories, which can add personality to your outfits. “Men should have a couple of ties with a little bit of personality, meaning different patterns or maybe a bold color,” says Thomas. For women, necklaces and bracelets can add a pop to an outfit, but less is more when considering jewelry. Make sure you don’t forget to use an appropriate purse or messenger bag and no matter where you live, you should have a professional trench in your wardrobe. Tailoring and maintenance Once you’ve built your wardrobe, you’ll want to keep it neat and polished. To make you clothing look custom made, find a good tailor who can make small tweaks to your garments. A garment steamer, a clothes shaver, stain remover sticks and fabric freshener sprays will help save on dry cleaning costs, by helping your garments looking and smelling fresh. everythinglake.com 23
Selling this summer? 6 upgrades to secure a speedy sale (BPT) - When the weather warms up, so does the real estate market. Spring and summer are traditionally the seasons when both home buyers and sellers are most active across the country. If you’ll be putting your home on the market this year, simple, cost-effective upgrades can help ensure a speedy sale at a good price. “In the world of real estate, it’s often necessary for sellers to spend a little on upgrades in order to achieve a satisfying home sale,” says Bethany Richmond, communications director for the Carpet & Rug Institute. “Fortunately, some of the most impressive upgrades, such as new carpeting, are also affordable. Such upgrades ensure that you don’t have to spend a lot to achieve a better selling price.” Here are six easy-to-do upgrades that are both cost-effective and high-impact: 1. Replace carpet It’s easy to see the impact of worn or dated carpeting. “If you don’t like looking at it, buyers won’t either,” Richmond says. “Replacing old or damaged carpet delivers impressive appeal for a modest investment.” New carpet is one upgrade that has a high ratio of value to cost. It substantially increases perceived value for homebuyers without requiring home sellers to spend a bundle. “Even less expensive carpet styles will freshen the look of a room and prepare it for sale,” Richmond notes. “You can get a lot more quality for just a little more money, she says, “and if you take advantage of spring carpet sales, installing new carpeting can cost even less.”
2. Clean flooring 24 everythinglake.com
If your carpet is still in great shape, then simply having it professionally cleaned can make it look even better. A deep professional cleaning helps lift tough soils and provides a cleaner, fresher look to rooms. You can find an expert in your area by visiting www.carpetrug.org. CRI experts can even provide insight into how to remove difficult stains. Not only is carpet a good value, it’s healthy, too. People with allergies or other sensitivities are installing carpet to improve indoor air quality. Recent studies support previous findings that carpet, when effectively cleaned, traps allergens and other particles, resulting in less dust, dander and airborne contaminants escaping into the air. To learn more about selecting and maintaining carpet, as well as how carpet is a good choice for people with allergies, visit the home page of the Carpet & Rug Institute at www.carpet-rug. org . Don’t forget to clean all other flooring, including hardwood, laminates and tile. Buyers will appreciate a sparkling clean appearance throughout the house. 3. Repaint in neutral shades Fresh paint is another smart and costeffective upgrade for sellers. Buyers expect it, yet many sellers hesitate to repaint. Perhaps they like the existing colors or balk at the cost of professional painting services. Yet
Selling this summer? 6 upgrades to secure a speedy sale repainting in neutral colors makes a room look fresher and brighter, and gives buyers a visual “blank slate” against which to imagine their own decor. Do the work yourself and you can reduce the cost of repainting even further. 4. Update or upgrade lighting You may find that disco-ball style globe light charming in your kitchen, but the average buyer doesn’t want dated or unusual lighting. Replacing dated or worn fixtures, especially in bathrooms and kitchens, is a cost-effective way to give a room a more up-to-date, contemporary look. If you already have newer fixtures, consider replacing incandescent bulbs with high-efficiency options such as CFLs or LEDs. Although they’re a bit more expensive to purchase, these bulbs last years longer - a selling point for buyers who will reap the value of not having to replace bulbs any time in the near future.
5. Install new faucets A high-end faucet can completely change the look and usability of a kitchen or bathroom. In terms of cost versus value, an upgraded faucet, such as pull-out or even touch-free styles, can dramatically increase perceived value for a relatively modest investment. An upgraded faucet is a thoughtful touch that will set your home apart in buyers’ minds. 6. Replace hardware throughout the home You may have already thought of upgrading kitchen cabinet knobs and drawer pulls, but have you also upgraded hardware in your bathroom or on the front door? These seemingly small items have a major impact on the overall visual effect of a home. In desirable rooms such as kitchens and baths, designer hardware can elevate the entire look of the room. And upgraded door hardware will ensure buyers have a positive first impression from the moment they enter your home.

Find the right tools to invest in a healthy smile (BPT) - If you’re concerned about your oral health and looking to protect your physical and financial wellbeing, one of the easiest ways to do so is to practice preventive care. Attending biannual dental checkups and making smart oral health decisions can help you spot a concern well before it becomes an expensive problem. Despite the obvious benefits of adhering to preventive care, many people forget this simple routine and risk bigger expenses down the road. Here are some easy tips you can follow to invest in a healthy smile and protect your oral health. * Get serious about flossing. Daily flossing is one of the most important things you can do to improve your oral health. Floss helps to get down into the crevices between the teeth. This is where plaque resides. Daily flossing helps you remove this plaque before it turns into tartar. * Find the toothbrush that’s right for you. As the main tool for scrubbing and brushing away unwanted plaque, the toothbrush tends to do the heavy lifting. Most dentists today recommend using an electric toothbrush. This allows you to give your teeth a better cleaning in less time, and it ensures you are brushing with the appropriate pressure. * What’s your toothpaste of choice? With so many kinds of toothpaste, personal preference plays a big factor. Toothpastes vary by flavor, whitening power and other additional features, so it really comes down 26 everythinglake.com
to your brushing goals. Whichever brand you select, make sure the box has the American Dental Association (ADA) stamp. This way you’ll know your toothpaste has been regulated and tested. * Don’t forget the mouthwash. People tend to forget about this important last step in a mouth cleansing routine, but a recent Good Housekeeping study found that “More than 9 out of 10 respondents who are not currently mouth rinse users (93 percent) said they would use it if it could help improve their dental visits.” Look for a mouthwash like the new Crest Pro-Health Tartar Protection rinse. This rinse does more than just provide anti-tartar and anti-cavity benefits, it also helps to freshen breath, fights unwanted surface stains and strengthens weakened enamel. * Your smile is affected by what you eat. There are many products on the market that that can help you whiten your smile, but you can also improve your pearly whites by making the right food choices. Eating strawberries, broccoli, apples and cauliflower, or drinking water and dairy products help to whiten your smile. Meanwhile, you should avoid drinking red wine, tea, coffee and cola, as these drinks can stain your teeth. Maintaining good oral health doesn’t have to be hard. With the right tools and an established daily routine, you can ensure your minor oral health concerns don’t lead to major dentist bills in the future. Touring Europe?
Must-see countries, cities, sights - and sites! (BPT) - Whether you’re a seasoned world traveler or going abroad for the first time, few global destinations deliver the blend of variety and accessibility that Europe does. Visiting Europe - especially on a guided tour - allows first-timers to immerse themselves into intercultural experiences and also offers veteran travelers lots of new things to see and do. For many Americans who have European heritage, visiting Europe is an exciting way to reconnect with their cultural history. For others, savoring the region’s diverse food and wine, exploring historic sites and natural wonders, and partaking in each country’s unique personality is a way to embrace another segment of the global community. Regardless of why you’re traveling to Europe, certain countries, cities and destinations are simply not to be missed. Italy From the shores of the Mediterranean where a feast of seafood goes directly from net to plate, to the amazing architecture and canals of Venice, to the unparalleled cultural and artistic history of Rome and the centuries-old hillside towns of Tuscany, one could travel Italy for a lifetime and still never see it all. Travelers who only have a week or so would do well to book an all-inclusive tour, such as the tours of Italy offered by Tauck. When you travel with an established tour group (Tauck has been in business for 89 years), you can relish an enhanced experience while allowing the experts to do the work of arranging “insider” tours of iconic landmarks, booking hotels, and coordinating on-tour transportation and special entertainment. Tauck offers 19 different tours of Italy, and each one is sure to please with the food, sights and attractions that have long made the country a top travel destination.
France Whether you crave the unparalleled views of Paris from atop the iconic Eiffel Tower, yearn to stroll the cobblestone streets of a quaint French village, or wish to revisit the Normandy beach where an ancestor fought in World War II, France is a must-visit destination for any European adventure. Cruise down the scenic Rhone or Seine rivers, discover the epicurean and viticultural delights of France’s countryside and great cities, or stroll the Champs Elysees and celebrity-watch. The British Isles Although some may argue that Great Britain, Ireland and Scotland aren’t technically part of continental Europe, why quibble? Pass up the British Isles and you’ll miss out on some of the region’s most breathtaking scenery, vibrant cities and rich history. Few cities have impacted the world stage as profoundly as London. From the legendary Tower of London where criminals and royalty were imprisoned throughout history, to the stately beauty of Buckingham Palace and the bustle of Piccadilly, London has something for everyone. The perfect foil for the urban lifestyle of London, the Irish countryside offers up numerous quaint villages, verdant pastures and hills seemingly greener than any others in the world.
