Spring cleaning secrets to cut the clutter without hurting productivity (BPT) - Spring cleaning can be a tedious task, but it doesn’t have to drain your time. With this three-step formula from Laura Stack, aka the Productivity Pro, you can increase productivity and have more time for fun in the sun. 1. Get ready to tackle the clutter. Start by labeling five large boxes: Put Away, Give Away, Store, Shred, and Trash. Then select the area that needs to be organized first. Instead of viewing spring cleaning as an all-day task, take an hour here and there to get the job done. When you’re ready to begin, set your timer for 50 minutes. When it buzzes, use the last 10 minutes of your organization session to handle the boxes: put things away, place charity items in the car, put items in storage, shred paper and toss out the trash.

can be found at www.fellowes.com. If you’re still having a hard time parting with certain things such as clothing or kitchen gadgets, place a tag on each item with the date one year from now. If you use the item, take the tag off. When that date arrives, anything that still has a tag goes. With the ready, set and go formula, spring cleaning can be easy. Use this three-step plan to get moving on to a more organized and productive life.

2. Get set and put a plan in place. Anything that goes together should be stored together. Find attractive boxes, baskets, toolboxes and totes to organize common items such as batteries, make-up, tools, cleaning supplies or gift-wrap. As you group similar items together, avoid keeping too many of the same items. Do you really need five spatulas or dozens of sweaters? The next time you think about purchasing something you already own, give serious thought as to what you are willing to give up.

Make spring cleaning more efficient and set yourself up for a productive remainder of the year by ridding your home of paper piles with a reliable shredder.

3. Go ... let go of all the clutter. Paper piles can stack up fast around the house, so shred sensitive documents with a reliable Fellowes shredder. The jam-proof Fellowes 79Ci works for large shredding jobs and can cross-cut up to 16 sheets per pass and run for 20 minutes. For smaller shredding jobs, try Fellowes P-12C that destroys 12 sheets per pass with a 5 minute run time. Both shredders everythinglake.com 7

Live and let live: Americans favor a kinder approach for managing cat populations (BPT) - Shocking statistics show that nearly three-quarters of the cats who enter our nation’s animal shelters each year, most of whom are free-roaming and un-owned, are killed. Fortunately, Americans’ love of animals doesn’t end with the pets that live in their homes; their care extends to the millions of cats who do not have owners and simply live throughout towns and cities. Across the country a growing number of communities are adopting humane ways to manage these populations and reduce the number killed in shelters. People favor the idea of trapping, neutering and returning (TNR) cats over lethal injection by a ratio of nearly three to one, a survey by national animal welfare organization Best Friends Animal Society reveals. Furthermore, the health and welfare of the cats (38 percent) and public health (31 percent) were the most important factors in their choice, the survey found. Through TNR, cats are humanely trapped and taken to a veterinarian who spays/neuters them, tips one ear as a visual signal that this cat has been sterilized, and then returns the animals to their outdoor home to live out their lives. “Uncontrolled population growth among homeless cats isn’t good for anyone - the animals or the community,” says Gregory Castle, CEO of Best Friends. “Yet adoption isn’t always feasible for cats that are used to living outdoors.” Many TNR advocates use the term “community cats” to describe populations of homeless felines because many of the cats don’t fit the typical image of “feral.” They live in close proximity to, and interact with, humans, accepting food and affection from people in the community. They may 8 everythinglake.com

be strays who have become lost or were abandoned, or they may be the offspring of strays, having never lived in a human home. Rather than belonging to no one, these cats become companions to people throughout the community. No one is sure exactly how many community cats live in the U.S., but 30 million to 40 million is a widely accepted estimate. “As communities are recognizing that killing the animals is neither humane nor effective and is quite costly to taxpayers - TNR programs have emerged as a kinder means to reduce populations while also ensuring that freeroaming cats stay as healthy as possible,” Castle says.

Live and let live: Americans favor a kinder approach for managing cat populations TNR programs address concerns for public health and the health of the animals. Cats are not only neutered when trapped, but also can be vaccinated against diseases, which helps protect community health. Neutered animals tend to be less territorial and are less stressed over finding mates and rearing young. Volunteers in communities across the country, and many municipalities, operate TNR programs. Un-owned cats are humanely trapped, neutered and vaccinated, then released into the community to live out their natural lives. The programs have proven very effective; a University of Florida study found a decrease of 66 percent in cats brought to a shelter from a ZIP code where a focused TNR program was in place. Programs in Randolph County, North Carolina, and on the campus of the University of Central Florida also significantly reduced the size of cat colonies. The Albuquerque, New Mexico, and San Antonio, Texas, Community Cats Projects, partnerships of Best Friends Animal Society and PetSmart Charities, Inc., have been particularly successful. In Albuquerque, for

example, shelter deaths of cats and kittens are down 88 percent, from more than 2,800 during the first nine months of 2011 to 337 for the same period this year. And in San Antonio, where intake numbers were rising dramatically before the program’s launch in April 2012, intake of cats and kittens is now declining sharply, and shelter deaths are 84 percent lower than in 2011. Neutering community cats ensures they won’t produce more un-owned cats, and humanely returning them back into the community allows them to live out their lives. Information to help communities and volunteers launch TNR programs can be found at bestfriends. org/communitycats. “The results of our public opinion survey confirm what we see firsthand in communities around the country - there is widespread support for TNR and community programs,” Castle says. “It’s hardly surprising, really. These programs are not only better for cats, they’re better for communities, too.”

Calories in Calories Out by Clifton Joseph

Next Level Fitness Now I know that most people will probably not agree with what I have to say, but after I explain my reasons for this to you, I think you will have a new look on how you view things. Hi my name is Clifton Joseph. I have been in the fitness industry for over 10 years. I played just about every sport there is and have trained people with just about every health, personal or sports goal as well. So let’s get back to these Calories! Scientist, doctors and fitness moguls try to come up with the best thing to help get people into shape and do it fast. Some products out there are actually very good and do what they say. A lot of them however really do not do much or can be more harmful for you than beneficial for you. I’m sure everyone has heard the saying “everybody is different”, so what may work for me may not work for you and through science we were able to narrow things down into 3 major body types. Ectomorph: Typically skinny, small frame, lean muscle mass, doesn’t gain weight easy, fast metabolism, flat chest and small shoulders. 20 everythinglake.com

Endomorph: Soft & Round body, typically short & stocky, gains muscle easily, gains fat very easily, finds it hard to lose weight, slow metabolism and large shoulders. Mesomorph: Athletic & Rectangular Shape, hard body, defined muscles, naturally strong, gains muscle easily, gains fat easier than Ectomorphs, lose weight easy and broad shoulders. Ok now just because you are classified in one of these body types does not mean you cannot gain or lose weight, nor does it mean you cannot be overweight if you are an Ectomorph. As more and more workout videos and fitness classes come out, you will see all of them fighting to be the next best new thing. They will tell you all kinds of ways that THEIR THING is THE BEST THING. This will be followed by the product line on what they say will help you reach your goal faster. Now once again, I am not saying that none of these will work. I am simply saying what may work for some, may not work for all. From my experience in personal training within these 10+ years I have noticed with my clients one fail proof method.

Calories in Calories Out by Clifton Joseph Calories In Calories Out! So let’s break it down. There are 3,500 calories in a pound. Most diets ask you to consume 1,200 to 1,500 calories. This may sound like the perfect plan to cut fat. Only problem is that if you’re not 5 feet tall and under, you are starving your body and forcing into storage mode to save the nutrients from the little bit of food you have put into your body just so it can function properly. Now you burn calories throughout the day just resting and doing the average general things. This is called Resting Caloric Burn. Opposite to that will be your Active Caloric Burn. This is when you are doing anything that is not in a normal day for you. Example if you are walk to work all the time and then one day you decide to run to work, you have now changed your resting to an active. So now let’s apply food to this method. If you only consume 1,200 calories in a day and you’re resting you already burned 1,100 calories. Then you worked out and burned another 700

to 1,000 calories, you have burned way too much calories and now your body has to pull from the riches source of nutrients and guess what, it’s not your fat. Your body will pull from the muscle to try and keep you going. For most people their calorie intake will be over 2,000 calories. You should FEED TO FUEL NOT TO FULL. Ok so now we are going to round this up. Let’s take in the factor of everything I just said in this Blog. We talked about the different body types and what they do, we talked about calories and are you getting enough and we talked about how scientist, doctors and fitness moguls wants to have the best new thing to get you in shape fast. The classes you do, the videos you watch and the foods you eat, they are always trying to cut calories to burn the fat. This brings me to another subject… Gimmick! That is a story for another time. When it all comes down to it, the calories are what really count! This brings me to my point, Calories In Calories Out.

5 simple ways to disconnect and enjoy 15 minutes of ‘me time’ (BPT) - Americans rarely take the time to unplug during the work day. In fact, we spend just short of half the day in front of some type of screen, according to research by the Kaiser Family Foundation. The health benefits of relaxing away from digital technology are well documented, but it still is a challenge for many to find some time for themselves. If you find yourself in this category, consider scheduling a 15 minute break every morning and afternoon. It will be quality me-time, and before you know it, those 15 minutes will become a welcomed break each and every day.

Take a walk: Get yourself out of your home or office for 15 minutes of fresh air. Pack a pair of sneakers and set a daily appointment on your calendar. Go around the block, or pick up the pace a bit and go for the mile. By removing yourself from your working environment, you can help your brain concentrate better when you return. Play with a pet: Four-legged family members can quickly bring a smile to your face during a 15-minute break for playtime. Even sitting still

Here are five simple ways you can turn just 15 minutes into an actual break that will help refresh your whole day - and may just make you more productive. Enjoy tea time: In under 15 minutes, you can brew and enjoy a cup of tea. Choose your favorite ceramic mug, add hot water, and let your Tetley Black and Green tea bag steep for two minutes while you take a breath. No peeking at your screen while your steeping! Tetley Black and Green tea is a smart choice, since it does double duty while you take a break, offering the benefits of green tea with the rich, smooth flavor of black tea. So savor the experience and the tea - and disconnect and focus your energy on yourself until your cup is empty. Meditation: Meditation is a great way to slow the heart, calm the mind and recharge the batteries. Just 15 minutes of meditation can help you improve your focus and reduce stress, bringing your energy back so you can accomplish everything on your to-do list. Follow along with a guided meditation on YouTube to help get started. 24 everythinglake.com

and scratching Fido or Fluffy behind the ears can help calm you down and lift your spirits. Plus, your pet will certainly reward you with love and affection. Stretch out the kinks: Sitting still for too long can leave your body achy and sapped for energy. Do some desk exercises to get your blood moving, like rising up to your tiptoes for a full-body stretch. Close your office door and put your phone on do not disturb to get the break you need. A couple of yoga moves are also an option, and can help relieve any neck or back tension that might be distracting you from your work. If you start scheduling these 15-minute breaks, you’ll soon notice they become automatic, and you’ll start to look forward to the times of the day when you can pull the plug and enjoy some time to yourself.

The perfect car tips for any trip (BPT) - Across the country people are planning to take longer road trips this year. If you plan to be one of them, here are five maintenance tips to consider for today’s cars.

mounts.” For the safest handling and braking, replace your struts and shocks at 50,000 miles or at the mileage recommended by the manufacturer.

* New tires? “For four-wheel drive cars and trucks, buy new tires as a complete set,” says RockAuto.com Engineer and Vice President Tom Taylor. “Mixing old and new tires or just mixing tire brands can create small differences in tire diameter that may be enough to overheat and damage four-wheel drive parts.”

* Just the belt? Modern engine belts last a long time. Most car owners do not resist when their mechanic tells them it is time to replace the belts after many miles or years. “Owners should listen to their mechanics when they are told the belt tensioners need to be replaced along with the belt,” says Taylor. “Those are the springloaded pulleys that keep the belt at the correct tension. Putting a new belt on old tensioners can mean premature wear on the new belt or damage to the alternator or other components spun by the belt.”

* What spare tire? Adding air to the spare used to be all that was needed, but many newer cars do not have a spare tire. They may have “run-flat” tires or come equipped with an air compressor and sealant. Become familiar with your vehicle’s spare tire system before you leave town and decide if it is adequate. Maybe you will want to upgrade to a full size spare. * Why new struts? Pushing down on a fender and counting the bounces is not a good test for the shocks and struts on modern cars. “Some people are happy that their struts seem to be lasting forever but they don’t realize that the struts actually wore out thousands of miles ago,” says Taylor. “Bad struts lead to unnecessary wear on a whole slew of additional parts including the brakes, rubber boots, suspension bushings and engine

* Hose looks new? New engine hoses also now last much longer than they used to. Hoses do eventually fail and the damage often starts in the hose’s inner layers where it is out of sight. A burst radiator hose still means a disrupted trip and today’s aluminum alloy engines are often even more susceptible to heat damage. Follow the guidance of your repair manual or mechanic on when to replace hoses. Some owners may get away with leaving a radiator hose untouched for decades, but for the rest, common sense assessment of risks and rewards shows why these tips are worth following.

Dry eye affects most menopausal women; nutrition can help (BPT) - When most women think of menopausal symptoms, they imagine hot flashes, moodiness and night sweats. But there’s one symptom that’s often forgotten when hormones begin to fluctuate - dry eye. In fact, dry eye affects 61 percent of menopausal women, according to The Huffington Post. Dry eye is a common condition in which the tear ducts don’t make enough tears for lubricating and nourishing the eye. Symptoms include eyes feeling itchy, scratchy, or stinging and burning. In some cases, it may feel as if there is a foreign particle in the eye. Another sign of dry eye is excessive tearing. This is due to, and indicative of poor tear quality. According to an article by WomantoWoman. com, researchers know that hormones are important to eye health as studies have identified androgen (testosterone) and estrogen receptors on the cornea and on the meibomian gland. This means there is a connection between tear production and sex hormones. While there is much more to learn about how hormones play a role in the lubrication of one’s eyes, research reveals dry eyes can result from a deficiency in estrogen, progesterone or testosterone. Chemical signal disruptions can create an unstable tear film, resulting in inflammation and lead to decreased tear production and dry eye. 26 everythinglake.com

“Most patients believe this eye issue is just a fact of life; an unavoidable part of aging and that it’s not a treatable condition. This simply isn’t the case anymore, says Dr. Sean Mulqueeny, an Optometrist in St. Louis. “There are many ways we can go about making patients’ lives better. We have all kinds of options that we didn’t have even five years ago.” Many sufferers try self-medicating with the use of eye drops. This can temporarily relieve discomfort, however, over time dry eye can lead to corneal damage and increase the risk of eye infections since poorly made tears can’t property protect or nourish the eye. Because of this, seeking treatment is necessary and important. “It is very important to have this conversation with your optometrist,” says Dr. Mulqueeny. “The key for patients is to ask questions. ‘Can you help me with this condition?’” According to Mulqueeny, if one suspects a medication to be the underlying cause of dry eye, make a point to discuss this with an eye care professional. During an eye care visit, your eye care professional might discuss the fact that eye health and nutrition are related. That’s why many optometrists and ophthalmologists often counsel their patients to add a fish oil or

Dry eye affects most menopausal women; nutrition can help Omega-3 supplement to their diet. Omega-3’s essential fatty acids that support healthy tear production to keep eyes moisturized. But not all supplements containing fish oil or omega 3’s are created equal. The omega-3 fat in plants, such as flax and walnuts, may help lower heart disease risk, but do not appear to help dry eyes as much as the omega-3s derived from fish, called DHA and EPA. Since nutrition impacts eye health, Mulqueeny recommends an omega-3-containing supplement with additional ingredients such as EyePromise EZ Tears that is designed to soothe irritation and help one’s eyes feel better faster.

In fact, in a recently published clinical research study, Ocular Nutrition Impact on Tear Film (ONIT), 67 patients of which 84 percent were women and 66 percent post-menopausal, EyePromise EZ Tears supplementation provided symptom improvement that began in the first week. The study also documented increased and continuing dry eye improvement over the entire eight week study period. Take note of dry eye symptoms and proactively discuss them with an eye care professional. In addition, consume foods containing the aforementioned ingredients and supplement with a dry eye formula such as EyePromise EZ Tears to help nourish your eyes.

A proprietary dietary supplement like EyePromise EZ Tears not only contains omega-3 fatty acids but eight other antiinflammatory ingredients like vitamins A, D3, turmeric, green tea extract and evening primrose oil. These ingredients can significantly accelerate the time it takes to feel relief.

Look 10 years younger with expert anti-aging tips Steer clear of skin saboteurs “Smoking and sun damage accelerate aging and put you at risk for certain cancers,” says Barton-Schwartz. “Apply sunscreen faithfully. Opt for broadspectrum formulas with antioxidants, such as vitamin C, to offset ultraviolet light. Be sure to wear a 4-inch brim hat, UV sunglasses and UV clothing when in the mid-day sun.”

(BPT) - Do you have friends or family members who seem to never age? No matter how old they get, their appearance is youthful and glowing. While genes play a role in how the body ages, they are not the only factor in aging gracefully. In fact, erasing years from your appearance is actually simpler than most people think.

Stay hydrated “I can always tell when someone isn’t drinking enough water from the condition of their skin,” says Barton-Schwartz. “Water protects cardiovascular health, keeps the brain in top working condition, facilitates weight loss and promotes detoxification. Water also transports oxygen to our cells, removes waste and protects our joints and organs.”

“When a person is young, it’s easy to have clear, translucent skin. Keeping it that way is a lifelong commitment,” says Veronica BartonSchwartz, a leading expert in skin care with more than 30 years of experience and owner of Veronica Malibu Skin and Body Care Center in Malibu, California. “Age is just a number when it comes to good skin care. My skin at 66 is better than it was at 30. I believe that all of us can age with grace and help delay the onset of age-related disease with a healthy lifestyle.”

Eat smart “What benefits the skin the most is eliminating sugar and white flour from your diet. You should also increase your consumption of fresh fruits, vegetables and lean protein, “ BartonSchwartz says. “Then, add in an omega-3 supplement every day. My favorite brand is Nordic Naturals. Most associate omega-3s with cardiovascular health, but the benefits go far beyond the heart. Omega-3s benefit brain and cognitive function, joint mobility, eye health and healthy skin and hair, too. My skin looks better and I feel better when I take my omega-3 supplements.”

Barton-Schwartz’s clientele includes everyone from surfers who have sun-damaged skin to aging Hollywood actresses who are trying to maintain an edge in their career. She notes that repairing skin must happen from the inside out. Here are her top recommendations for maintaining that coveted youthful glow:

Exfoliate regularly “A weekly buffing of the skin gets rid of dead skin and stimulates cell turnover,” says BartonSchwartz. “This helps your skin produce new collagen, leaving your face and body feeling smooth and refreshed. I recommend nonabrasive peels.”

Look 10 years younger with expert anti-aging tips Break a sweat “Exercise improves circulation, increasing the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to your skin cells and tissues, and it also reduces wrinklecausing inflammation,” Barton-Schwartz says. Apply food-based nutrients “Research has shown that many food-based nutrients provide anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity when applied topically,” says Barton-Schwartz. “Topical antioxidants work synergistically to enhance the natural health of the skin alongside a healthy diet and supplements. Our most popular antioxidant moisturizer contains ingredients like grape seed oil, orange flower, neroli, chamomile, sage, bergamot tea, avocado oil and soy.”

Sleep well Barton-Schwartz notes the term “beauty sleep” actually has some science behind it. “Certain hormones are released during specific stages of sleep. A lack of consistent sleep disrupts the normal release of those hormones, impacting every single biological process,” she says. “This leads to an increase in inflammatory substances in your blood stream that damage your skin on a cellular lever, as well as accelerate aging.” Prioritize oral health “Poor oral health is linked to everything from heart disease to rheumatoid arthritis,” BartonSchwartz says. “I work with a dentist in Malibu and when someone thinks they need a facelift, what they really need is to get their teeth fixed. Nothing is more youthful than a healthy, beautiful smile.”

Teenagers want parents to be involved in their lives (BPT) - Today’s changing social environment and confusing messages about drugs and alcohol may be making it even more difficult for teenagers to get their bearings as they move toward adulthood. That is why it is more important than ever for parents to know what is going on in their kids’ lives and have the skills to respond to their teens appropriately.

most of them want their parents involved in their lives to provide guidance and support,” says Dr. Thomas Wright, chief medical officer at Rosecrance, one of the country’s leading teen substance abuse treatment centers. “Teens want their parents to actively parent them and provide them guidance they need, including direction around substances.”

Specifically, as drugs and alcohol are becoming more accessible and more states are legalizing marijuana, many teens may believe that the use of marijuana or other substances is now okay. Parents should know that legalization of marijuana does not mean it is harmless, and increased availability of other substances does not make them less harmful, either. Marijuana and other substances can cause permanent damage to the teenage brain, and teens can become addicted more quickly than adults.

Studies have shown that parents who play an active role in the lives of their teens can positively impact their children’s behavior and influence them to cease or abstain from ever using substances. In contrast, research shows that teens whose parents expect them to engage in risky behaviors such as drinking and using drugs are more likely to do so.

This is a time when parents need to become involved in their teens’ lives and help them navigate these complex issues. While many parents may think of their teens as grownups and able to fully take care of themselves, teenagers have said that this is a time when they need their parents the most. Asking questions and being involved shows teenagers that their parents care. “Even though teens may sometimes indicate otherwise, through my experience as a psychiatrist to teenagers, I have found that 30 everythinglake.com

“It is critical that parents understand their role and take conscious measures to support their teens in living a healthy and happy life,” Wright says. “Parents should ask what their teens are doing, address the pressures they are facing, act immediately when they suspect their teen is in trouble, and advocate for help if their teen needs it to help them live a healthy life.” Starting a conversation with a teen about substances can be daunting. It can be even more overwhelming for a parent when their teenage child approaches them with questions before they have had a chance to prepare.
