Welcome to your new apartment. This booklet will help you explore the local area, and find the best places to eat, drink, shop and socialise. It’s your quick start guide to living like a local.
Neighbourhood 38 Heath Drive is the perfect opportunity to get a foothold in the leafy and historic Hampstead area, for which there is always great demand from City professionals, young couples and families. Historically, the hillside village of Hampstead was a staging post, a refuge above the London smog, with its hundreds of acres of Heath, woods and nearby parks. As a result, it attracted artists, writers, actors, poets and celebrities, and has been an inspiration to many. Today it maintains the same appeal; although it is now a part of the bustling metropolis, the 790 acres of the Heath are just a short hop away and are still “the lungs” of the capital. Hampstead’s attraction now is just as much the smart shops and boutiques, the pavement cafés and restaurants – a place where all tastes can be satisfied.
What sets Hampstead apart is its cosmopolitan nature coupled with the incredibly strong sense of community that has kept families living here for generations. Why would anyone want to leave? If you want to look beyond the rural atmosphere of Hampstead Village, Swiss Cottage, Finchley Road and West Hampstead are just a short walk away, with their own urbane and eclectic mix of shops, restaurants, bars, cinemas and arts venues. With three tube stations a brisk walk away – and the overground stations on Finchley Road and West End Lane – you are spoilt for choice for easy access across London and connection to all major transport Interchanges

“A little noiseless noise among the leaves, Born of the very sigh that silence heaves: For not the faintest motion could be seen Of all the shades that slanted o’er the green.” Lines from “I Stood Tiptoe Upon A Little Hill”, written on Hampstead Heath (1818)
John Keats (1795–1821) – English Romantic Poet – [ Hampstead Resident ]
Open Spaces Discover Hampstead Heath – the wild heath habitat that inspired Keats and Constable, Wells and Wordsworth, Betjeman and Blyton. Climb to the top to get one of the best views of London, swim in open air bathing ponds, see exotic animals and spot indigenous wildlife, search for the lost duelling ground, wonder who really is buried in the Tumulus, forage for fruits and berries, and lose yourself in a landscape of wildflower meadows and enchanted woods. The Heath is one of London’s most popular open spaces – an urban oasis of beautiful green countryside in the heart of the capital, and home to the Iveagh Bequest at Kenwood House with its breathtaking interiors and stunning world-class art collection. To the west, the Heath extends to Golders Hill Park, a pristine green space with formal gardens, butterfly house and a children’s zoo. It is here that you’ll discover one of London’s best kept secrets: the Pergola. This beautiful tranquil garden with its impressive colonnades and far reaching views has the atmosphere of an ancient ruin, offering visitors a quiet retreat from the busy city that surrounds it. On the north-west flank, it extends into the quiet enclave of Dame Henrietta Barnett’s experimental Garden Suburb and across to the east is Highgate Village, perched on top of a steep hill and brimming with beautiful 17th and 18th century architecture. This village is also a retreat for the rich and famous, from movie stars, singers and writers to politicians and industrialists. Moving south we come to Primrose Hill with its unparalleled views of the London skyline, from which you can cross to Regents Park, the home to ZSL London Zoo, the world's oldest scientific zoo. From here you can follow the tow-path of the Grand Union Canal as it meanders its way through the capital.

Keeping Active However you choose to keep fit, Hampstead has it all. Take a dip in the open-air bathing ponds or in the impressive built Lido, push yourself to the limits with an army style boot-camp or join one of the many local sports clubs. The area is also served by a number of gyms including Virgin Active in the O2 centre, UCS Active on Frognal, Swiss Cottage Leisure Centre, The Gym in West Hampstead and The Armoury next to the Heath, with its convenient access to the Royal Free Hospital. If golf is your thing, North London has a choice of 10 golf courses, and those with a thirst for adventure can take up sailing on the nearby Brent Reservoir or learn to fly at the Elstree Aerodrome. Alternatively, you might simply choose to take a long walk around the 790 acres of park and woodland that make up Hampstead Heath.
“Being entirely honest with oneself is a good exercise.” Sigmund Freud (1856–1939) – Neurologist and Founder of Psychoanalysis – [ Hampstead Resident ]

Transport Underground: You have easy access to Hampstead (Zone 2 – Northern Line) connecting to Kings Cross, Eurostar, Gatwick Express and the national rail network. From West Hampstead (Zone 2 – Jubilee Line) you have direct access to Canary Wharf. A journey to Bond Street takes only 9 minutes connecting to Crossrail and Heathrow from 2018, whilst the Metropolitan line from Finchley Road gets you to Liverpool Street in just 23 minutes.
Rail: From Finchley Road & Frognal and West Hampstead Overground stations, trains regularly depart for South, West and East London. In addition, trains from West Hampstead Thameslink connect to Luton Airport, St Pancras, South London and Gatwick Airport. Buses: Bus and coach access is phenomenal, with routes that seem to go everywhere. There are many buses that travel south into the city, including the 13 (to Aldwych via Selfridges and Trafalgar Square), the 139 (to Waterloo) and the 189 (to Oxford Circus), all of which are 24 hour services. Cycle: It’s an easy 30-minute pedal to Oxford Street, but be wary, it is mostly uphill on the way back
“Every time I see an adult on a bicycle, I no longer despair for the future of the human race.” H.G.Wells (1866–1946) – Writer of The Time Machine, War of the Worlds & The Invisible Man – [ Hampstead Resident ] – 13 –
Shopping The area is well served by local shops. Hampstead Village has independent boutiques – such as Hampstead Bazaar, Tara Jarmon and Trilogy for clothes, food purveyors Artichoke (gloriously fresh and beautifully presented fruit and veg) and the Hampstead Butcher & Providore (with an extensive selection of free-range and ethically reared meats, and cheeses, wine and larder essentials) – as well as a full range of high street stores, from Waterstones, Whistles to Gap, Nicole Farhi and Comptoir de Cotonniers. And rest assured, you will never be short of a Hair Stylist or Beautician. It is hard to imagine not finding whatever you need here. In the other direction, West End Lane is awash with independent boutiques. There is also a choice of well-stocked convenience stores such as Little Waitrose, Sainsbury’s Local, Marks & Spencer as well as independents with that promise of quality and service. The weekly Saturday Farmers’ Market at West Hampstead Station offers fish from the Essex coast, free range and organic meat, poultry, eggs and dairy, artisan bread and cakes, and the freshest seasonal fruit and veg. For a wider range of produce head to the larger Sainsbury supermarket at the O2 Centre on Finchley Road. For a more complete shopping experience, Brent Cross Shopping Centre is a short drive away with 120 stores under one roof, including John Lewis and Fenwick, Waitrose, Apple and Tesla Cars.

Dining Out When it comes to food, Hampstead serves up a great selection of places to eat. Both Hampstead Village and West Hampstead are packed with cafés, bars, bakeries and bistros. For fine dining in Hampstead, the Villa Bianca has long been the people’s favourite, with Piccola and the Coffee Cup under the same management. The Wells Tavern offers the best in Gastro Pub cuisine, and 28 Church Row is a hidden gem. Melrose & Morgan, just off Heath Street, is a high-end deli serving delicious hot and cold lunches. Jin Kichi is the Japanese Restaurant that has been attracting Japanese people from across London for as long as we can remember, and La Gaffe has been offering homely Italian food for a good fifty years. More mainstream fare is offered by well-established chains such as Côte Brasserie, Wagamama, Pizza Express and Le Pain Quotidien. West Hampstead is the young upstart when it comes to food with a broad selection of national chains as well as the up and coming cafés and restaurants that you would expect in such an upwardly mobile area. If you are looking for a healthy, tasty lunch try Zest at JW3 or Wet Fish Café. Gail’s is worth a visit, and is a great place to grab a snack on the way to work. The Petite Coree is a must if you crave Asian Fusion fare, while Sarracino is the place to go if you want a family-run Italian experience. If you feel like a stroll to build up your appetite, make your way to Belsize Park or Primrose Hill where you’ll find the variety of great restaurants continues. The Lansdowne Pub and The Engineer on Gloucester Avenue serve a delicious Sunday Roast, not to mention fine food every other day of the week, whilst Odette’s in Regents Park Road, under Chef Patron Bryn Williams, has been offering fresh and seasonal produce, cooked simply to perfection, for almost four decades.

Culture To do or not to do? With a wide variety of entertainment on your doorstep, how do you choose the best way spend your time? The choice on offer is seemingly endless: theatres, live music, talks, comedy clubs, galleries, museums, classes and a range of cinemas. The newly opened JW3 cultural centre on Finchley Road offers a year-round varied programme of events. Whilst the Camden Arts Centre focusses on world-class contemporary art exhibitions, and strives to involve members of the public in the creative processes. Arthouse cinemas at Everyman and The Tricycle Theatre provide a constant stream of thought-provoking films, with regular talks by writers, directors and cast. If your tastes in film are more mainstream, the Vue multi-screen at the O2 Centre and Odeon IMAX complexes in Swiss Cottage offer current blockbusters in crystal clear sound and vision. The New End Theatre, Hampstead Theatre, Tricycle and Pentameters offer a range of stage performances, from music and comedy to experimental fringe theatre. The permanent exhibitions at the Freud Museum, Keats House, Fenton House, Burgh House and Kenwood will transport you back to a bygone era, and reveal the rich heritage of the area.

Night Life There are no shortage of watering holes in the area. Up the hill in Hampstead Village you can sample an extensive range of craft beers at The Horseshoe, or if you prefer simple traditional pubs, try the Holly Bush, The Duke of Hamilton or The Flask. A short walk across the Heath brings you to The Spaniards, a wooden panelled 16th century Inn with open fire places, offering cozy refuge in Winter, whilst the large beer garden hosts regular BBQs in Summer. Dropping down to West Hampstead, check out The Black Lion or The Alice House serving innovative cocktails and British Gin. Just down the road, The Gallery attracts a trendy crowd to this shabby-chic bar with regular DJ sets and rooms available for private functions. Highgate Village boasts seven pubs – from the Duke’s Head with its prize-winning range of artisan beers to Gastro Pub The Red Lion & Sun, UK Wine Pub of 2016.
“Let me take you to the place where membership's a smiling face, brush shoulders with the stars.” George Michael (1963–2016)

Kenwood House It is worth a visit just to see the library designed by Robert Adam, but you will also find a stunning collection of art, including paintings by Rembrandt, Turner, Reynolds and Gainsborough. The landscaped gardens are home to sculptures by Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and Eugène Dodeigne. Pergola & Hill House This secret garden is one of the hidden delights of Hampstead Heath, to be found on the less-visited western side.
Parliament Hill Iconic views of the City from one of the highest points in London. Hampstead Heath Duelling Ground Hidden in dense woodland, the duelling ground was a popular spot for gentlemen to settle their disputes in the 18th century. Hampstead Heath Tumulus Long-suspected of being the last resting place of Boadicea, it is now believed it may be a Bronze Age burial mound, due to its position on a mass of overlapping ley lines. Athlone House Garden A secluded flower garden with cultivated plants, formal lawns and castle-like tower, it has only recently come into public ownership and is still relatively unknown to the general public.
Golders Hill Park Zoo This free zoo hosts a growing collection of exotic birds, butterflies and mammals, including Laughing Kookaburras and Ring-tailed Lemurs, an Eagle Owl and Deer. St John-at-Hampstead Cemetery The church was founded here back in the 14th century, is the last resting place of such luminaries as Gerald du Maurier, John Constable, Peter Cook and Hugh Gaitskell
