Shooting for

the stars

Our photo shoot of Nordic film stars made landing on the moon look like a day at the beach. Photographer and director David Bicho, assistant photographer Gustav Gerdes, stylist Ricki Petrini, assistant stylist Linda Dale, and journalist Gunnar Rehlin were able to deliver an extraordinary article and front cover, and they brought us a lot of laughter and surreal anecdotes along the way. We wanted to give a shout-out to our Nordic Hollywood stars. Our goal was to make an impression worthy of a new Nordic lifestyle magazine, and to give some of the film industry’s Nordic members the credit they deserve. Journalist Gunnar Rehlin looked through Sweden’s most desirable contact list – his own – while David Bicho began preparing a cover that would serve as an homage to Annie Leibovitz’s famous group photos. Also, stylist Ricki Petrini decided that the stars should wear clothes by Nordic designers. In total, we were able to gather 24 of the most interesting Nordic film personalities for our shoot. – Those participating were really positive about the project, and they’re proud to be part of “the Nordic wave”. But it’s been difficult to make everything work from a logistic perspective. These stars are literally working all around the world, says Gunnar Rehlin. Photographer David Bicho didn’t think twice about accepting the challenge. – This project is like a dream come true. Being able to put so much time and effort into a single picture is unique – and fun, David Bicho tells us. Planning has been key. These stars all have a tight schedule, so in order to get the right shots everything had to be carefully prepared in advance. Everyone was photographed at a distance of 8.5 meters, and a laser telemeter was used to fix the camera at the height of 95 cm in order to get the right proportions for the group photo. Some actors are actually much taller than others, but it didn’t look right in the picture, so the proportions have been altered a bit. Björne Larson helped us get permission to use a parking structure that Hollywood studio The Lot uses to shoot car chases and similar scenes. This legendary studio was once graced by the presence of Charlie Chaplin and Marilyn Monroe, and is now used for TV series True Blood.

Photographer David Bicho and stylist Ricki Petrini fell in love with Stellan Skarsgård.

When we arrived, our assistant photographer Gustav told the security guard that “we’re here to shoot some people on the roof ”. Obviously, this led to some confusion, but we were soon able to proceed with the shoot. In addition, photographer David Bicho was pulled aside for questioning at every single airport security checkpoint, due to his conspicuous photography equipment. Gustav displayed a great deal of creativity and fearlessness when he, without really knowing who to ask, borrowed a couch from the True Blood set. He also worked out how to get the electric power supply working in the parking lot where they did the shoot. – LA was cold. We were on the 6th floor of a wall-less parking structure at “The Lot”. The temperature was 15 degrees in the sun, but the shoot was conducted in the shade where it was perhaps 5–6 degrees – and very windy. The hood of our rental car became our make-up table, and an open car door served as our dressing room. The shoot went great, and David was super-professional. The only problem was the “weak” electricity, which meant waiting longer for the flash to charge as well as many photos without any flash, assistant stylist Linda Dale tells us. During her twelve years in the industry, stylist Ricki Petrini has worked with many celebrities and artists, and she was excited to meet all these successful Swedes, Danes, Norwegians and Finns who have made it in Hollywood. She expected big egos and large gestures, as it is common practice in many parts of Hollywood. – Turned out my fears were completely unfounded. I met one gracious star after another. The entire shoot had a warm and friendly feel to it. – I was impressed by their incredibly professional way of handling new co-workers. That’s one of the difficulties in this industry. You only see each other for a few short moments, and you’re usually supposed to work closely together. Everything has to go smoothly and there’s not really any time to get to know each other. – The Skarsgård family and their father Stellan are such pros! I was able to exchange a few words with Stellan before his shoot. This man works with people like Tom Hanks and Johnny Depp, so a slight dose of narcissism would almost seem appropriate. Turns out I was wrong again! He’s as humble and charming as his sons, and he told me how thankful he is to be able to do what he does. And he actually likes sitting in the make-up room before shoots.

the Nordic soul

In your hands, you are holding the first issue of Z Lifestyle Magazine. Together with one of the fastest growing hotel chains in the world, Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group, we are proud to bring you the first hotel magazine to be made available in all of the Nordic countries. In collaboration with the Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group, we will create a platform for everything and everyone Nordic, while also setting our sights on the rest of the world. Our first issue is acknowledging a group of people who have truly taken that mindset to heart, namely the Nordic actors, directors, screenwriters, composers, and producers who have become successful in the film industry stars. They are without a doubt our hottest Nordic export right now, and we are proud to give these hard-working artists the credit they deserve – with a three-page cover and 40 star-studded pages inside. A project of this scope requires a small army of editors, writers and photographers, but we love to go that extra mile. Creating a lifestyle magazine for Nordic readers requires a keen eye for fashion and trends. In the Nordic countries we are constantly craving the latest trends, and we make an effort to keep up with current events at home and around the world. We love being the first to recommend that new night club to our friends or to spot the latest craze before everyone else. Needless to say, we will have to work really hard to live up to the high standards set by our readers. That is exactly what Z Lifestyle Magazine brings: an insight into the latest and hottest. This issue will bring you all of this, and much more.

The summer collection “Metallic Touch” from Sergio Rossi incorporates unexpected metallic elements. The black and white stripes appearing on heels, soles, and straps, also featured in other Sergio Rossi collections, compliment the graphical monochrome trend and make for a striking visual impression.

The spring/summer 2013 collection from Jenny Packham is an immersion in black, white, and light greys, with the occasional splotch of yellow and orange, all covered in rhinestones.

The Première Flying Tourbillon is a new limited edition watch from Chanel, which will be produced in only 5 copies. This version comes in 18 karat white gold with 182 blue sapphires.

Chloé, the pinoneer of ready-to-wear collections, has been a creative force in fashion since the 1950s. To celebrate its sixtieth anniversary, la Maison Chloé launches a re-edition collection of 16 signature pieces from different points in the fashion house’s past. Since 1952, several high profile fashion designers have been at the creative reins of the fashion house, including Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney and Phoebe Philo. The Galaxy dress from the spring-summer collection of 1978 is one of the re-edition pieces. Karl Lagerfeld designed it as an evening dress, but it also makes for a great daytime look, worn with or without a belt.

Jean Paul Gaultier’s spring/summer 2013 collection has been inspired by India. Turbans accompany each look, many of them featuring loose trousers and shirts. One of the many highlights was a dinner jacket, heavily inspired by the Orient. The signature stripes are found on everything from shirts and trousers to jackets and sweaters, and the colour pallete is dominated by black, white, yellow, and red. The iconic sailor references are also present in the cuts and prints of many garments.

Burberry Prorsum went for the metallic trend in their spring/ summer collections. Paired with a conventional dark blue jacket and trousers, the metallic cardigan is an interesting twist. Accessories have also been infused with metal, although there are some more traditional items as well – like this bag with alligator trims.

You can always count on the colourful disposition of Moods of Norway to bring exciting new pieces every season, like this floral jacket in vibrant pinks and light blues, 560 euros.

t

he atmosphere is perfect for anyone wanting to experience a sprawling, alternative, and half-crazy metropolis. We list seven hotspots guaranteed to give you a weekend to remember. Berlin is a teenager going through puberty. That’s one way to describe one of Europe’s most exciting cities in a sentence. With a rough and rebellious appearance, but a heart of gold, Berlin has become home to cultural workers from all over the world. Artists, authors, designers, architects, and journalists come here to try out their ideas. The city is a large, creative melting pot, with art in every street corner, music everywhere, and a choice of more than 2,000 cultural events a day. Berlin has something for everyone. City in motion

In Berlin; clubs, galleries, and bars are always on the move. When rents become

too high they move to new places, further away from the city centre, and resurrect. This routine is sure to last for some time, as Berlin is the largest city in Europe in terms of size. A slightly different set of rules apply for those who want to explore the night-life here, compared to other large cities. You’re supposed to dress down, so avoid bringing your flashiest outfits. Otherwise they will simply not let you into the hottest night clubs. This is why celebrities love Berlin – they get to be themselves. Dress down

– And whatever you do, never ask the people you meet what they do for a living. To put it bluntly, it will not go down well. People will hook up with drifters or party the night away with the cleaning lady – as long as their personalities match. It’s how they do things. You party as if the world was about to end, says Henrik Tidefjärd, Berlin expert and lifestyle guide.

Bring your picnic basket or your skateboard, and try wind skating at the old airport Tempelhof. The Reichstag building – parliament and reflection of Germany’s history.

Where to stay

Radisson Blu Hotel, Berlin is situated in the middle of Berlin’s cultural centre, the Mitte district. Ask for a room facing towards the atrium yard and wake up with a view of an enormous, floating glass cylinder, containing more than one million litres of water and a plethora of shimmering, tropical fish. But this interior decoration detail notwithstanding, the hotel’s location is perfect for visitors wishing to acquaint themselves with one of the city’s liveliest areas. www.radissonblu.com/hotel-berlin

Susanne Bier left the Dogme scene and became an Academy Award-winning international star. Susanne Bier was one of the Danish directors who, together with among others Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg, founded the influential Dogme movement. Her film Open Hearts starred a certain Mads Mikkelsen, and Susanne Bier’s star has risen steadily ever since. She is now one of Scandinavia’s internationally most renowned and celebrated directors. It began with an Oscar nomination for Before the Wedding (also featuring a certain Mads Mikkelsen) and continued with her winning an Oscar in the category Best foreign language film for In a Better World. In between those, she made her directorial début in the US with Things We Lost in the Fire, starring Halle Berry and Benicio del Toro. She still lives in Copenhagen but spends a large part of the year travelling. Last year saw the release of her film Love is All You Need starring Pierce Brosnan and Trine Dyrholm. kid Lena Endre is 58 years old and an actress attaining international fame thanks to the Millennium effect. – I have noticed how people recognize me every now and then. I have a small apartment in France, and I’m no longer that Swedish woman who no one knows. I get recognized now, so I’m not anonymous anymore. The impact has been incredible, and it’s even more interesting that it all started with a novel. She played Mikael Blomqvist’s mistress in the adaptations of Stieg Larsson’s books, which led to a small but important part in Paul Thomas Anderson’s acclaimed film The Master. Both Anderson

and Joaquin Phoenix, playing opposite her, have praised her performance. Lena Endre made her début in 1984, in the action film Slagskämpen. She became famous in all of Sweden when landing one of the leading parts in the very popular TV soap Varuhuset in 1987 and also showcased her comic genius in the TV comedy sketch show Lorry. Ingmar Bergman discovered her talent early on and came to work with her at The Royal Dramatic Theatre. Endre has also appeared in a number of TV and film productions based on screenplays by Bergman, such as The Best Intentions, Sunday’s Children, Faithless, and In the Presence of a Clown (which was also directed by Bergman). Lena Endre also appears in several films directed by ex-husband Richard Hobert. On top of that, she has played the part of a policewoman in a number of episodes of internationally acclaimed police TV series Wallander. As a lot of other Swedes, she works in Sweden’s neighbouring countries Denmark and Norway – with, among others, Simon Staho in Denmark and Maria Sødahl in Norway. She is also featured in Echoes from the Dead, to be released this year and directed by Daniel Alfredson, who directed the second and third Millennium films.

king

Father of eight and relentless globetrotter – Stellan Skarsgård is the godfather of Nordic cinema.

Stellan Skarsgård is without doubt Scandinavia’s most renowned and sought-after actor. Although a father of eight, he dashes around the world making American mega productions as well as Norwegian indie art films. He often makes films in Norway and Denmark, whereas roles in Sweden have been fewer and farther between in recent years (although he had a part in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, largely shot on location in Sweden). Skarsgård was born in 1951 and his breakthrough came at age 16, when he starred in TV series Bombi Bitt and Me, based on the stories by Swedish author Fritiof Nilsson Piraten. At that time, there was but one TV channel in Sweden and teenager Skarsgård became a star overnight. Later on, in 1982, he was awarded the Berlin Film Festival’s prize for best actor in a leading role for The Simple-Minded Murderer, and after a number of acclaimed parts in Sweden came the international breakthrough in Lars von Trier’s Breaking the Waves in 1996. Since then, he has continued collaborating with

62 | z lifestyle magazine

von Trier and is the male lead in von Trier’s new film Nymphomaniac, which will probably be premièred at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Since Breaking the Waves we’ve seen Skarsgård in films such as Deep Blue Sea, Ronin, Exorcist: The Beginning, King Arthur, Pirates of the Caribbean, Mamma Mia! (where his singing was enthusiastic rather than good), Melancholia, Angels and Demons, Thor, The Avengers, and so on, and so forth. All in all, he’s played more than 120 parts in TV and film productions. This year, we’ll see him not only in Nymphomaniac, but also in the The Railway Man, Romeo and Juliet, Thor: The Dark World, and The Physician. This spring he will shoot another film with his good friend Hans Petter Moland; a black comedy called Kraftidioten. He does more acting jobs in Denmark and Norway than in Sweden. – The offers I get from Sweden are often less exciting, he explains. – I get offered more interesting roles in Denmark and Norway. But that might be about to change. I have started to receive screenplays from new Swedish directors and producers, which is fun. I think it’s because many of them make a living from shooting commercials, which give them more time to work on their screenplays. They don’t have to constantly make one feature film after another, which would otherwise leave you with insufficient time to work on the screenplays.

His part in the “Millennium” films gave Michael Nyqvist an international career of epic proportions. Michael Nyqvist is one of a number of Swedish actors who’ve become an international household name thanks to the so-called Millennium effect. Many of those involved in the adaptations for the silver screen of Stieg Larsson’s books, both in front of the camera and behind it, have become sought-after all over the world. Nyqvist, now 53 years of age, was already one of Sweden’s most cherished actors, both on the stage and in films such as Lukas Moodysson’s Together, the hit Grabben i graven bredvid and, not least, Academy Award-nominated megahit As It is in Heaven. But it was the three Millennium films – The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest – that put him on the map internationally. His part as the villain in the thriller Abduction led to Nyqvist playing the master criminal in Mission Impossible IV: Ghost Protocol, starring Tom Cruise. Since then, Nyqvist has made films such as Europa Report and The Girl from Nagasaki. He was recently starring in American TV series Zero Hour. As the series wasn’t renewed for a second season, Nyqvist has been granted a much more flexible schedule for the coming year. – I have a couple of exciting jobs coming up, he says. Alicia Vikander was until only a few years ago an unknown, young actress in Gothenburg, her main claim to fame a role in TV series Andra avenyn. The female lead in Lisa Langseth’s film Pure changed all that. The film was an international success and the beginning of a career for Alicia that is currently taking her further than most of her Scandinavian colleagues can even dream of. After Pure came a part in Ella Lemhagen’s The Crown Jewels, followed by an acclaimed portrayal of the queen in Oscar-nominated A Royal Affair. She played her first English language role in Joe Wright’s wilful interpretation of Anna Karenina, which rendered her a BAFTA nomination (BAFTA being the British equivalent of the Oscar). After Anna Karenina, Alicia went on to play a role in The Seventh Son, also starring Julianne Moore and Jeff Bridges, and she is currently in Sweden for Lisa Langseth’s new film Hotell. She has a big part in The Fifth Estate, the film about Wikileaks, and she is soon embarking for Australia, to appear in gangster film Son of a Gun together with Ewan McGregor. All her international commitments have led to Alicia feeling somewhat homeless, her home being replaced by one hotel room after another. ”A Royal Affair” gave Arcel the film everyone wanted to make.

For many years, Nikolaj Arcel was known as Denmark’s best screenwriter. He wrote the screenplay for Klättertjuven, repeating the feat when the film was remade a couple of years later in the United States as Catch That Girl, starring a young Kristen Stewart. He also wrote the screenplay for the Swedish version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and directed a couple of films. The big break came in 2012 in the shape of A Royal Affair, a film based on a true story about the Danish queen having an affair with the royal couple’s physician-in-ordinary and the consequences thereof. The three starring actors – Alicia Vikander, Mads Mikkelsen, and Mikkel Boe Følsgaard – were showered in awards and critical acclaim, and Arcel, who also wrote the script, was nominated for an Oscar. All this has now led to a prestigious directing job in the United States. Arcel is to direct the upcoming adaptation of Don Winslow’s novel The Power of the Dog. The novel is a thick volume spanning thirty years of bloody struggle between an American DEA agent and a Mexican drug cartel. Many are those who’ve thought about adapting the novel, among them Robert de Niro and Oliver Stone, but Danish director Nikolaj Arcel will be the one doing it. To be premièred in 2014.

Half Swedish, half Danish, and sought after by everyone. David Dencik has the offers lined up. David Dencik has begun putting a new, international CV together that will be the envy of many. Not only did he have parts in both the Swedish and the American versions of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – in recent years he has also appeared in Steven Spielberg’s War Horse, Tomas Alfredson’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, Danish box office hit A Royal Affair, and Susanne Bier’s yet to be released Serena (with Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper). And in the near future, he will play against Alfred Molina in American thriller Divine Shadows. David Dencik is 39 years of age and lives in Copenhagen. He speaks both Danish and Swedish fluently, which makes it possible for him to work freely in both countries. During the last few years, he has played in Danish TV series Lykke and in the very controversial, Swedish film Call Girl. He first appeared on the silver screen in 2003, in Danish art film Reconstruction, and his breakthrough in Sweden came in 2005, when he starred in TV series Lasermannen, an acclaimed reality-drama about the hunt for a serial killer in Stockholm. The following year David Dencik played a transsexual in Danish film A Soap and was awarded several prizes at the Berlin Film Festival, showcasing him as a man with many talents. Dencik has played in more than 60 films and TV series since his début in 2003, but he also has time for the stage. Just the other year he played Hamlet in a production on Gotland, directed by Lars Norén.

Not only is Björne a film maker – he is also the one whom all Scandinavians gather around. Björne Larson is the hub around which many of the Scandinavian names in Los Angeles rotate. Björne, 39 years old and a screenwriter and director with many years experience, is a good friend of, among others, Alexander Skarsgård and Fares Fares. These two had the starring roles in Kill Your Darlings, the feature film Björne made in and around Los Angeles some years ago. Before that, he and Alexander had directed the short feature Att döda ett barn, based on Stig Dagerman’s well known short story. This film has won several film festival awards. Some years ago Björne made a short feature based on Hjalmar Söderberg’s short story Pälsen, starring Fares Fares. Since a number of years, Björne lives with his family in Los Angeles and feels right at home there. He pursues his own projects, among them film adaptations of Elsa Beskow’s works, to which he managed to obtain the rights in competition with many other interested parties. It takes time to realize plans like these in Hollywood, where producers are tight-fisted, but Björne is stubborn and will sooner or later raise the necessary funding. After a number of successful films, Izabella is currently focussing on her fashion line. Izabella Scorupco was 17 years old when she landed the female leading role in youth film Ingen kan älska som vi. This in turn led to the beautiful teenager getting model jobs all over Europe and in 1989, at age 19, she also embarked on a successful but short-lived career as a singer, with the song and video Shame, Shame, Shame as her most memorable accomplishment in that area of show business. Today she laughs at the whole thing. In 1995, Izabella Scorupco appeared in Swedish film The Tears of Saint Peter and in that same year she landed the part as Natalya Simonova in the James Bond film Goldeneye, playing opposite Pierce Brosnan. The film was a major success and Scorupco met with much critical acclaim, but felt unsure as to how to take advantage of the career opportunities suddenly open to her. She returned to Swedish film only to come back to the international film industry a few years later, in Polish giant production With Fire and Sword and, later on, Vertical Limit, Reign of Fire, and The Exorcist: The Awakening. The latest film she did was the Swedish film Ă„nglavakt. Acting since he was 9 years old, Gustaf has never shied away from either indie film projects or big budget productions.

Gustaf Skarsgård is the second oldest of veteran Stellan Skarsgård’s eight children, but unlike his elder brother Alexander, 33 year old Gustaf has not yet moved from Sweden. Instead, he visits other countries when offered parts in English, like in Peter Weir’s The Way Back and in the new TV series Vikings. Like his father Stellan, he readily accepts parts in low-budget indie films he feels ought to be done, like upcoming relation drama Us, if he has a well-paid part lined up, like in Norwegian mega production Kon-Tiki. Gustaf made his début in short feature Spinken in 1989. As a 9 year old he played opposite his father Stellan in spy thriller Täcknamn Coq Rouge. Parts in a number of acclaimed TV series led to the first big part in a film, The Invisible from 2002, where he played a young man who is severely beaten and gets trapped in limbo; not alive, but not quite dead. In Academy Award nominated film Evil he played the leader of the boarding school gang who bully the main protagonist. Since then, he’s garnered critical acclaim for parts in TV series Bibliotekstjuven, the gay drama Patrik 1.5, and Björn Runge’s dark drama Happy End. In 2007, he received a Guldbagge Award for actor in a leading role, for his part in youth film Kidz in da Hood. Later in 2013 we’ll see him playing a viking in lavish, American TV production Vikings, a part that he might discuss with elder brother Alexander, whose True Blood character Erik was a viking before being bitten and transformed into a vampire. Hollywood stars Harald Zwart is the Star Wars fan who became a commercially successful director in Hollywood, even though he also manages to direct an occasional film in his native country of Norway. The films Lange Flate Ballær and Lange Flate Ballær II may not have been critically acclaimed, but they’ve reached a large audience in Norway. In his home town of Fredrikstad, where he runs a café called Zwart Kaffe, he is king. His first Hollywood film was One Night at McCool’s, a drama comedy featuring Michael Douglas, Matt

Dillon, and Liv Tyler. His next film was the juvenile action flick The Pink Panther 2 with Steve Martin as fumbling inspector Clouseau. So far, his greatest success is The Karate Kid, a remake of the 1984 film produced by Will Smith, about a boy training to become a karate expert. Smith’s son Jaden played the boy and Chinese action star Jackie Chan his teacher. The film was a huge success worldwide. This summer sees the release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, featuring among others Lily Collins, Lena Headey, and Jamie Campbell Bower. This is the first film based on Cassandra Clare’s juvenile science fiction-books and hopes are high it will become another Twilight phenomenon. Veslemøy Ruud Zwart is the woman behind it all, since she has produced most of her husband Harald Zwart’s films (with the exception of The Karate Kid), from One Night at McCool’s and onwards. In that film she also appears in her only screen role so far, as the Clinique counter saleswoman. Apart from producing her husband’s films, she has also produced the documentary The Women in White, directed by Gry Winther. The film details what happened in Cuba in 2003, when 75 men were imprisoned on charges of having demanded democracy and human rights. This led to the men’s wives, mothers and daughters protesting and organising peaceful demonstrations against the regime.

THE SWEDE WHO CONQUERED

Hollywood

Funny, sporty and critically acclaimed – Malin Åkerman has mastered everything from comedy to martial arts.

Malin Åkerman has established herself as a talented actress in only a few years, in both comedies and action films. Malin, who recently turned 35, moved to Canada with her parents at the tender age of two, only to move to Los Angeles in 2001, where she now lives with her husband. In 2013 she will attend the most exciting opening performance of her life: she is expecting her first child. Malin Åkerman made advertising films already as a child and at the age of 16 she won a model competition. Her début as an actress came in 1997, with a part in the Canadian TV series Earth: Final Conflict. A number of minor parts led to her move to Los Angeles in the hope of finding a career. That hope was realised when, in 2006, she played opposite Ben Stiller in The Heartbreak Kid. Even though the film met with unfavourable reviews, the critics extolled Åkerman and her talent for comic timing, as was the case with 27 Dresses. In 2009, eagerly awaited Watchmen – based on Alan Moore’s dystopic, graphic novels – was released. Malin Åkerman plays Silk Spectre and demonstrated that she is as much of an action actress as a comedienne. After Watchmen there have been films like Couples Retreat, Wanderlust, Rock of Ages (with Tom Cruise), and The Giant Mechanical Man. She has also appeared in the two TV series Children’s Hospital and Suburgatory. In 2013, we’ll see her playing rock singer Debbie Harry in CBGB, a film about the classic New York nightclub with that name, and playing against John Cusack in the action film The Numbers Station. It is rumoured that she will play porn star Linda Lovelace in Inferno, but since another film about Lovelace has already been released this year, Inferno’s future is somewhat uncertain. Every summer Malin Åkerman visits her father on the west coast of Sweden in order to eat crayfish. – I’m in love with Falsterbo! It’s the Riviera of Sweden. The beaches are fantastic. And every year my father is tasked with bringing home heaps of crayfish. I can’t live without crayfish – it’s simply the best thing ever. I can’t get enough of them. 80 | z lifestyle magazine

”Kon-Tiki” proved that international adventures are possible in Norway. Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg is the Norwegian equivalent to all the duos working as directors/producers in the world, from the Coen brothers to the Dardennes to Robert Rodriquez and Frank Miller. They’re childhood friends and were already making short films as children, using Joachim’s father’s heavy camcorder. Between 1992 and 1994 they went to film school in Stockholm, founding their own production company – Roenberg – in 1995. Advertisement films for Coca-Cola, Nokia, and others led to international success. In 2006 they produced and directed their first full-length feature film, Bandidas - a wild west comedy starring Salma Hayek and Penelope Cruz. Critical acclaim was not exactly overwhelming, but at least Joachim and Espen put their names on the map. Things were

looking up two years later, when they made Max Manus. This is a film based on a true story about one of Norway’s most renowned resistance fighters during World War 2. Max Manus, starring Norwegian film star Aksel Hennie, was highly critically acclaimed and seen by hundreds of thousands of Norwegians. Which brings us to the duo’s latest success, Kon Tiki – not only one of the most widely seen Norwegian films in history, but also nominated for an Oscar in the category best foreign language film. This has naturally led to both of them spending quite some time in Los Angeles in order to discuss future American film projects. Together with Harald Zwart they own Motion Blur, an advertisement film production company.

The next batch of Scandinavians headed for stardom. Bill Skarsgård is the fourth eldest son in

the Skarsgård clan and the third of Stellan’s children to follow in their father’s footsteps. Stellan claims not to have influenced them, just letting them do what they want in life. Should they, however, want some good advice, they are welcome to ask him. Bill is 23 years old and has a small part in this spring’s giant production Anna Karenina. We’ll see a lot more of him when the American horror TV series Hemlock Grove, starring actors such as Franke Janssen and Dougray Scott, airs later this year. Bill made his film début at age 10 in the adventure film White Water Fury. After a part in the TV series/film Arn (where both father Stellan and elder brother Gustaf appeared), he landed his first starring role in youth film Kenny Begins in 2009. The following year his performance as Simple Simon was met with great critical acclaim, and he showed us with quite some emphasis that he is here to stay when he starred in Hannes Holm’s drama Himlen är oskyldigt blå. Bill also starred in Ella Lemhagen’s The Crown Jewels and in Lisa Ohlin’s Simon och ekarna. Even if the film as such has not been very well received, no one has had any criticisms to level at Bill Skarsgård for his acting. Matias became interested in theatre very early in life and in school he made friends with Gustaf Skarsgård, through Gustaf ’s father Stellan. They helped him apply to a dramatic school. Matias was accepted, and he got a part in a TV soap, but left the series rather quickly. For several years he worked in construction. He read the book Easy Money, heard that it was to be made into a film, and literally nagged the team into letting him audition for the part as Jorge. He got the part and later revealed that he cried when he was accepted for it. The Easy Money films are box office hits all over the world and have boosted the Hollywood careers of both Daniel Espinosa, who directed the first one, and Joel Kinnaman, who stars in both of them. And now Matias Varela follows suit. There were to be many TV series parts before she got her first starring role in the horror film Species: The Awakening. Since then, she’s been appearing both in TV productions – Desperate Housewives, The Mentalist, and 2 1/2 Men – and on film: Iron Man 2 and star-studded bonanza Seven Psychopaths. And waiting for their opening nights during this year are comedies Audrey and Melvin Smarty. Helena Mattsson is an accomplished ballet-dancer and good at Asian martial arts, the latter skill coming in handy when she appears in the occasional action film. AN EMIRATES SUITE EXPERIENCE, FIRST CLASS ON THE AIRBUS A380

Emirates presents the world’s most luxurious first class service inflight. For the past decade, this UAE-based airline has revolutionised air travel with new cabin products and innovative features that were unthinkable just a few years ago. Some people adore the airline, others find it excessive and tacky. But no matter what, Emirates certainly stands out. Businesslass.se boarded a flight between Hong Kong and Bangkok to try out the latest first class service on the Airbus A380. The experience began on the ground, with a separate first class check-in desk without a queue. Unfortunately, there are no fast track facilities in Hong Kong, so you can’t bypass the rather slow queues at the security check and passport control. But given what was to come, the wait was bearable. Emirates operates a number of stylish lounges at airports around the world. Their lounge in Hong Kong is located at the end of the Y-shaped terminal building. An extensive self-service buffet was available in Hong Kong, with all kinds of dinner items as well as desserts, fresh fruit, and different cheeses. There was also a menu with further choices. A large selection of drinks was also on offer, including free-flowing champagne, wines, spirits, and soft drinks. The friendly staff frequently toured the lounge, not just to clear tables but also to offer

refills of champagne and other drinks, and to chat with guests. Boarding commenced 30 minutes before departure. First class passengers were invited to board first, using a priority lane at the gate. Due to its size, an Airbus A380 needs three jet bridges for efficient boarding and deplaning of all passengers. Emirates has placed its first class cabin on the upper deck, where there are 16 suites in a 1-2-1 configuration. A smiling cabin attendant greeted me at the entrance and escorted me to my seat, 04A - situated

just around the corner - where my jacket was taken and newspapers and magazines offered. Drinks were served while we were still on the ground; lovely Dom Pérignon champagne and tasty Arabic coffee – a great way to begin a journey. My first impression of the suite was positive. With pleasant lighting, gold and marble, the suite was somewhat of a shining marvel. The cabin, on the other hand, was slightly too large for an optimal first class experience.

BusinessClass

We know all the inside tips on how to make life a bit more pleasant at airports. The Emirates first class suite is remarkably well designed and offers features that few other airlines can muster. To mention but a few – a wireless remote control for the entire suite and entertainment system, a private minibar, three individual lamps, a drawer with a first class writing kit, two doors that can be fully closed, a built-in beauty box with skin products, a telephone handset with which to call “room service” (i.e. the cabin crew), and, of course, plenty of storage for hand luggage and personal belongings. Only a handful of passengers boarded the plane in Hong Kong, but more were to join in Bangkok. Despite a short flight (two hours and twenty minutes) I wanted to make the best possible use of the facilities and try out the latest innovation – the inflight shower. The two showers are offered to first class passengers, and are situated on opposite sides of the staircase leading to the lower deck. The bathrooms are very spacious, with ample room to get changed and dressed. A bath towel and a wooden box with soaps, shampoo, conditioner, and skin products are provided. Each person gets five minutes of water, the remaining water being shown on a display in the shower cubicle. This ensures that you don’t run out of water with your hair full of shampoo. Apart from the limited amount of water, taking an

inflight shower was very much like taking a shower on the ground, with controls for temperature and water pressure. And as a pleasant surprise, the bathroom turned out to have floor heating. After the refreshing shower I returned to my suite and was treated to dinner service by a Hong Kong-based flight attendant. A “light meal” was served, consisting of three courses – duck or smoked salmon for starters, four choices of main courses, and raspberry cake for dessert. There was also an extensive drink list comprising two white wines, three red wines, champagne, port wine, spirits, and cocktails. I tried a French red wine with the meal, Château Cantenac Brown 2000 – a full-bodied and tasty wine. Having eaten, I was offered coffee or tea. The meal was appetising and the choices plentiful, but the food itself was uninspiring and not really up to first class standard. Touchdown in Bangkok just before midnight, a few minutes ahead of schedule. First class passengers were allowed to disembark first and the priority tag worked like a charm; the first bags were already on the belt when I arrived at the terminal. Prior to landing we were offered fast track cards for a speedy queue at immigration. I was also told I could bring any items of choice from the personal minibar, in case I would get thirsty during the taxi ride to downtown Bangkok. To conclude, Emirates offers a very luxu-

rious service with all kinds of features, appealing to business travellers and leisure travellers alike. The shower is a great addition, especially on longhaul flights. The suite offers superb comfort during the day and excellent privacy during the night, with a fully flat bed and sliding doors. The only drawback is the food, which is not up to par with the competition. All in all a first class service well worth a try. For travellers going to Asia, affordable tickets can be found for the daily flight between Hong Kong and Bangkok.

travel plan

There are several useful internet sites that offer services to facilitate your travels by collecting all your booking numbers and travel plans in one place. One good example is www.tripit.com. As soon as you receive a confirmation from your travel agency, hotel or airline, you forward it to an e-mail address at Tripit, where it will be read and a travel plan created. The new travel plan can be synchronised with your calendar or shared with family and colleagues, so that they know where you are at all times. The travel plan comprises hotels, flights, rental cars, and does not just have dates and times, but also booking references and ticket numbers. Tripit is a great alternative for passengers who usually carry a number of printouts of bookings with them, and who would like to access their bookings on their telephone or handheld computer. The standard version of Tripit is free, but advanced users may purchase a premium version with extra features. There are also many alternatives to Tripit, like kayak.com, worldmate.com, and traxo.com.

take care

It is no myth that travelling takes a great toll on your body. Whether it is a ten hour flight in a cramped seat or a daylong walking tour, you might sometimes be in need of a relaxing massage. If you happen to be a first class or business class passenger on any of the following airlines, you’re in luck! At the Thai Royal Orchid Spa in Bangkok, passengers are offered a wide selection of treatments ranging from a full body scented oil massage to nimble, jetlag curing foot massages. At the Etihad Airways Sixth Senses Spa in Abu Dhabi, passengers can enjoy a soothing facial renewal treatment as well as a range of other suitable spa treatments. Perfect for cleansing off the desert sand! Indulge in quintessentially English pampering at the British Airways Elemis Travel Spa at London Heathrow and New York’s JFK. Signature treatments such as the Royal Rose Facial for her and the King Facial for him are as genuinely English as their names imply.

The train is now climbing, passing enormous viaducts while the mountains get steeper and steeper. The verdure is impressive. Some cows suddenly appear outside the window in a sort of tranquil choreography, accompanied by the throbbing, monotonous song of the tracks. The beautiful railway station of Ponte Leccia is a hub for trains from the north-western tourist resort of Calvi. On that side of Corsica, the train travels along the coastline to the popular seaside resort of Ile Rousse. The coast, with its splendid vineyards, is also well-known for its ports-of-call for cruise liners, among them the posh town of Saint-Florent. Saint-Florent has a nearly mythological, French landscape: boule-playing, bow-legged geezers in corduroy caps and guests eating at the harbour restaurants, serving bouillabaisse and langouste. – Allez! shouts the female conductor on The Shaker. The clouds are darkening and we are puffing along towards the mountains, some of them 9,000 feet high. Omessa is surrounded by rather barren, yet arable land, enclosed by stone walls. The train suddenly slows down and nearly stops, sort of catches its breath and gathers strength in order to continue upwards. We are in the middle of Corsica’s famous national park and nearing Corte’s pastoral landscape – vast vistas and tremendous mountains. Like a painting by Hieronymus Bosch. Geneviève leaves us with a ”Salut!” and meets up with her sister, who happens to be the station-master. Liberta, it says on a stone wall nearby. After Venaco there is an enormous viaduct, Ponte Vecchiu, which turns out to be one of Gustave Eiffel’s less well-known creations. At Vizzavona, Corsica’s wilderness takes over. From here, the popular GR 20 footpath runs on for 300 miles and takes a fortnight to walk. We stay on board and leave the chestnut forests behind, continuing to more open vistas. There is a tang of the sea in the air as we approach Ajaccio, both shaken and somewhat stirred. Ajaccio, Corsica’s largest city, was the birthplace of Napoleon. But today we're more tempted by the wild boar casserole marinated in red wine at one of the city’s many restaurants than by a visit to the Maison Bonaparte museum. There is a pervading aroma of chestnuts and myrtle in the air, as if from a mountain breeze. The following day we rent a car, and carefully study our route along the N196 on the map. The way from Ajaccio to the dramatic cliffs surrounding Bonifacio is lined with intense verdure. There are huge mountain massifs on one side, and hang-gliders over an emerald green sea on the other. This area also boasts a large number of brilliant resorts, such as the beach hotel Ajaccio Bay.

“Allez! shouts the female conductor on The Shaker.”

he dialect and the word's are classic Corsican, but the feeling is universal. "U trinighellu" means "The Shaker", and that's what this noisy, narrow gauge railway train does: it jolts, shakes, and twists, during the whole trip of 85 miles between Corsica’s largest cities, Bastia and Ajaccio. And even though travelling by car is the best way to visit this proud, Mediterranean island’s most beautiful spots and coves, The Shaker is a perfect introduction to the mentality of pleasantly plucky Corsica. Should one be so inclined, the contours of Corsica can be regarded as the island flippin’ its ruling neighbour the bird. The railway was built towards the end of the nineteenth century, in an attempt by the French government in Paris to further tighten its grip on the freedom-loving Corsicans. By linking the two strategically most important cities (situated on the northern and western coasts, respectively) they gained access to Corsica’s first sovereign capital, Corte – otherwise hard to capture, situated as it is in the heart of the interior. Bastia is France’s second-largest port, a fact soon forgotten when the train starts puffing across the island. The occasionally spotted cars are occupied by small groups of backpacking tourists and locals on their way home from town. Geneviève Ceccarini is one of the latter. She is a nurse who’s just finished work for the day and is on her way back to Corte. – I’ve actually worked as a conductor on The Shaker. That train certainly takes its time. But it’s also quite charming when we have to wait for sheep and goats to cross the tracks, says Geneviève Ceccarini, looking anything but stressed out.

Getting there

There are international airports in both Bastia and Ajaccio. A pleasant alternative is scheduled airline flights to Nice or Marseille on the mainland and ferry from there to Bastia. Another alternative is to take the ferry from Sardinia to Bonifacio, a trip of about 20 miles. The Bastia – Ajaccio railway was inaugurated in 1894. The trip takes about 4 hours. Including the Calvi – Ponte Leccia line, the entire journey takes you through 38 tunnels and across 34 viaducts and 12 bridges (one of them the work of Eiffel). www.train-corse.com

“The clouds are darkening and we are puffing along towards the mountains, some of them 9,000 feet high.” We’re only thirty miles away from Corsica’s southernmost tip, but the restaurant Coralli, south of the beautiful city of Sartène, lures us off course with Pietra, the region’s typical chestnut beer from the Castagniccia forests, prisuttu – air-dried ham – and wild boar ragout. The whole area is rustic and mountainous, despite it being situated so close to the sea. We finish off by tickling the palatte with local goat’s cheese. We leave restaurant owner Viola Danzio and the brilliant view of rock formations by the sea, reminiscent of a horse lying down, as if looking out over the ocean. Closer to Bonifacio, with its ragged mountain tops, one gets a feeling that both the Alps and the Flintstones have moved to Corsica. This is not a big city, but nonetheless impressive, since it rises a hundred steep yards out of the Mediterranean. Napoleon and Saint Francis of Assisi are just two of the multitudes who’ve been enchanted by Bonifacio. This very old cobblestone city sprawls like a piece of pastry on the mountain. To reach it, one has to walk up to the 9th century citadel. In the quiet, early eventide, a chef smoking a cigarette and drinking a cup of coffee sits in an open

window, while a butcher rests a while in an alley before closing up for the day. The view at Place Mancinella is spectacular – the cliffs in the sea, the distant lighthouse, the seagulls wheeling across the sky. Some sailing boats, already far out at sea, have left still visible wakes in the water. Further out, one senses rather than sees the Lavezzi islands, a nature reserve and popular diving spot. In the harbour, among newly provisioned sailing boats, tour boats are waiting in a long line. Seen from the outskirts, Bonifacio looks like a backdrop made of papier-mâché. The cloud cover over the mountains is thick, but the sky above the sea is blue as innocence. In the open boat, French senior citizens smoke like chimneys and exclaim: ”Oh-la-la, c’est magnifique”, while the guide takes us along across crystal clear waters and through the cave of Sdragonato. – To me, this is the embodiment of the Garden of Eden, he says. In the last 10–15 years watches have experienced a revival of almost revolutionary proportions in terms of return on investment of certain timepieces. storytelling is one of the reasons for this comeback. By Kristian Haagen

o

nce upon a time. That's how most good stories begin, and don’t we all love a good story? Storytelling is not just great entertainment, it's also a seductive element that is crucial for the sale of almost every product sold today. These days you don't just buy a beer, an umbrella, or a watch (to name three very useful, contemporary products). You have a plethora of possibilities. The beer is not just a beer, when brewed by Belgian monks under a full moon. An umbrella does more than simply keep you dry, if handmade by a former corset maker from Dior, and a Patek Philippe pocket watch with 24 mechanical functions is much much more than just a watch. Let’s stay with the latter, as a super complicated Patek Philippe pocket watch from 1932 was sold in 1999 for 8 million euros at a Sotheby’s auction. That's a lot of money for a watch, especially considering it was sold in

a decade when the mobile phone was becoming the primary tool for telling the time and a watch, not least a pocket watch, was considered terribly old fashioned.

Only one watch company can boast of longest continuous production: Vacheron Constantin. That is one of the reasons why the Swiss manufacturer is on top of the collector’s list.

The emotional values

The mobile phone offers a lot of functions, far more than the aforementioned pocket watch, or any watch for that matter, but it would never be sold for anything worth mentioning if offered at an auction. This is due to the complete lack of emotional values in modern gadgets. A watch, on the other hand, represents emotional values in abundance. Take, for instance, the Iphone 5. The moment we buy it we start wondering what the Iphone 6 will be like. We don’t get emotionally attached to an Iphone. We merely wait for the next generation of Iphone to be launched. Patek Philippe, on the other hand, claims that we don’t actually own a Patek Philippe, but merely look after it for the next generation. That's the future generation of mankind, mind you, and not a generation of tablets and electronic gadgets.

In a world dominated by war and a volatile stock market, the future does not seem as glorious as the past. In challenging times we tend instead to over-romanticise the past, not least our childhoods when the sun was shining and we had home baked pancakes three times a day. And this is the explanation as to why many watches these days receive such impressive auction results. At least according to yours truly.

changing hands, as the most prominent auctions are held in New York, Switzerland, and London. Kennedy’s Omega, Einstein’s Longines and Gandhi’s Zenith are great examples of bidding wars, as they were sold for 269,000, 457,000, and 1.6 million euros, respectively. In other words Gandhi seems to have a greater impact on our history, compared with the two other, otherwise great men.

Celebrity values

Mr Cool equals money

Watches with a celebrity provenance are especially valuable. Once the gavel hits the table the third time, many zeroes will have been added to the original estimates of watches owned by J. F. Kennedy, Gandhi, Einstein and other historic figures. Watches that once belonged to historic figures end up in fierce bidding wars between private collectors and museums, resulting in staggering amounts in dollars, Swiss Francs or Pounds Sterling

Impressive auction results are not dominated exclusively by watches owned by political and historical figures, which the auctions of everything Steve McQueen proves very well. Both his everyday watch, a Rolex Submariner and one of the watches that adorned his wrist during the shooting of Le Mans in 1971, a blue dial Heuer Monaco, received high bids. The Rolex Submariner was sold for 180,000 euros when offered by Antiquo-

Swiss watch companies have become particularly proficient at using the celebrity effect in the marketing of their watches, in addition to highlighting the watch's actual function: to show you what time it is at the moment. Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher recently paired up with Audemars Piguet and even has a collection named after him.

German watchmaking seems to interest collectors all over the world. This is due to classic design, exquisite quality, and low production volume.

airlines

Up Where We

Belong They take care of us when we travel, but who are they and what are their plans for 2013? In every issue of Z Lifestyle we will feature the most interesting airlines that all frequent flyers ought to know about. We begin with Lufthansa and SAS. By: Paulina Bylén Photography: David Bicho

Lufthansa

is like the trusted friend whose hand you hold during a thunderstorm, and most definitely not the exuberant bon vivant showing off his many party tricks. Lufthansa values three things: continuity, reliability, and individual caring. Travelling with Lufthansa, you’re guaranteed a highclass trip without unwelcome surprises. New features this year are the new Boeing 747-8 (the longest passenger airliners on the market), brand new Business Class, and a new manager in Scandinavia. On top of that, Lufthansa has been voted Europe’s best airline by World Travel Awards and given 5 stars on Skytrax for Lufthansa First Class. – At the moment, the Nordic countries are the most important region in Europe for Lufthansa, says Ulrich Link, Lufthansa’s new manager in Scandinavia. We have no intentions of tiring our readers with accounts of things known to one and all, such as the keen competition in the aviation industry, the raging price wars, the sky-rocketing fuel costs (with Lufthansa each year paying the equivalent of 1 euro per person in the world for fuel). Paradoxically enough, we’ve never travelled as much as we do now. Like all other airlines, Lufthansa has been affected by harsher circumstances, leading to substantially lower margins. Generally speaking, the airline does well, but not well enough. To keep their own high standards Lufthansa’s products and services have to be tended to and constant reinvestments are necessary in order to keep abreast of recent developments. The Nordic countries really stand out among the European markets. Seven out of ten Lufthansa tickets between Germany and the Nordics are booked and bought in a Nordic country. Year in and year out, Lufthansa has set new records in our part of the world. Last year, Lufthansa sold more than four million seats, an all-time high – so far. It’s hardly a secret that Scandinavia is one of Europe’s strongest economies, but the impact on the aviation business is particularly telling. – Travellers from the Nordic countries stand out in several respects. They are a lot more fond of travelling than other Europeans, their finances are strong, and many of them are business travellers, Ulrich Link explains. z lifestyle magazine | 117

airlines

“Travellers from Nordic countries stand out in several respects. They are a lot more fond of travelling than other Europeans, and their finances are strong.” The Nordic countries are currently seeing the largest influx of business travellers in the world, since – traditionally speaking – quite a number of prominent enterprises are based here (even though a fair number have been sold or moved abroad). Apart from classic markets, such as oil and cars, there is nowadays a large segment of small and middle-sized companies (technology, digital development, programming, green innovations, etc.). These are niches of interest to the rest of the world and thus flourishing. Not surprisingly, representatives for these enterprises travel a lot, thus leading to a demand that Lufthansa – and any airline flying to and from the Nordic countries – capitalizes on. Lufthansa probably has one of the largest order books among European airlines today. They’ve ordered 103 new aeroplanes and will spend a million euros a day for the next three years only on refitting the whole intercontinetal fleet with the new Business Class seat. The latest addition is a Boeing 747-8, flying to Los Angeles, Washington, and Bangalore. This aeroplane is a fourth generation 747, with extra long fuselage and re-designed wings, and it guzzles 15 percent less fuel than its predecessors. This machine is the largest of the 747 models and the largest passenger airliner ever built in the United States.

This will be feasible thanks in part to the changes brought about by the restructuring programme; changes making the airline more flexible. The terms of the new collective agreement will make it possible for SAS to compete more effectively during the summer season and on weekends, generating as they do a higher degree of efficiency in the use of aeroplanes and personnel. This constitutes a step in the right direction, as is the introduction of 47 new routes during 2013. The 47 new destinations are:

From Stockholm: Pula, Palermo, Alanya, Cagliari, Tel Aviv, Thessaloniki, Pristina, Innsbruck. From Gothenburg: Nice, Pristina, Åre/Östersund. From Copenhagen: San Francisco, Budapest, Prague, Biarritz, Cagliari, Palermo, Alanya, Thessaloniki, August, Pula, Newcastle. From Helsinki: Åre/ Östersund, Geneva, Paris, Rome, Prague. From Tampere: Kittilä. From Turku: Kittilä. From Oslo: Athens, Berlin, Budapest, Cagliari, Palermo, Pristina, Valencia, Malta, Lissabon, Teneriffe, Pula, Santorini, Salzburg. From Bergen: Dubrovnik, Antalya. From Stavanger: Antalya. From Trondheim: Split.

Scandinavian airline

SAS is the original Scandinavian airline, although no one can be unaware of the fact that it nearly went bankrupt in 2012. As negotiations were being held with the various unions, all of Scandinavia followed the nail-biting thriller. We now know the outcome – SAS and the unions finally managed to agree and it’s once again business as usual. Even though other airlines would have stepped in to fill the space had SAS gone bankrupt, it would have shaken the Nordic soul. Luckily enough, this never came to be, and we are quite naturally wondering what awaits the airline in 2013. – SAS is currently, step by step, implementing the restructuring plan presented this last November. The plan is probably the most far-reaching ever in Scandinavian trade and industry, says Rickard Gustafson, President and CEO of SAS. Thanks to the new agreement, SAS counts on being able to decrease it’s pension benefits to employees by about SEK 19 billion, or 60 percent, which should significantly lower the financial risk. This year, revenues increased by 4–7 percent in comparison with the corresponding period last year, and costs were lowered by 2.7 percent, as a direct effect of the restructuring programme. Despite all of this, SAS shows a general loss, although smaller than expected. – However, seasonally, the first quarter is our worst quarter and this effect has essentially been amplified due to the new fiscal year. Reporting a loss is never satisfying and a great deal of work remains to be done before SAS shows a profit again. This year will see the opening of 47 new routes and increased co-operation with Thai Airways in order to facilitate direct flights to Bangkok from all the Scandinavian capitals.

Having served as CEO within the hospitality industry longer than anyone else, the Rezidor Hotel Group’s Kurt Ritter has now passed the torch to Wolfgang M. Neumann. During Ritter’s 23 years at the helm, Rezidor has become one of the fastest-growing international hotel companies in the world, and his stepping down will be a milestone in the company’s history.

Wolfgang M. Neumann President & CEO Profession: President & CEO of

The Rezidor Hotel Group, succeeding the legendary Kurt Ritter. Age: 51. Based in: Brussels. Family: Wife and three children. Goal: To make Rezidor one of the leading hotel chains in Europe. Motto: Success comes in Cans, not Cant’s – and I am most certainly a Yes-I-Can! Man.

– It’s a privilege to succeed a legend like Kurt Ritter, says Wolfgang M. Neumann. Wolfgang M. Neumann’s career has skyrocketed since he joined the Rezidor Hotel Group in 2011. He began as Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer, and now, two years later he has become the CEO. – Our aim is to improve our profitability and become the one of the industry leaders. Big words, but I’m confident in our Route 2015 vision, strategy and turnaround plan, says Wolfgang M. Neumann. 2015 is a big year for Rezidor and Neumann. Route 2015, launched in December 2011, is a comprehensive programme aimed at increasing the Group’s profit margin by six to eight percent by the year 2015. The plan involves an ambitious expansion in markets such as Russia and Africa, as well as forward-thinking, cost-saving initiatives. Rezidor was originally a Nordic company, and its ties to this region is strong. Wolfgang M. Neumann also has a personal connection to the Nordic countries, having once been stationed in Stockholm. In addition, one of his children was born there. – I know the Nordic countries well. Doing business here differs from doing business in the rest of Europe. We’re heavily invested in the Nordic countries, in addition to our ambitious expansion in Emerging Markets, and I want to further develop the area to maintain our leading position. The Nordic countries are, after all, our home turf. This is where it all started and it’s thanks to the Nordic market that Rezidor prospers, Wolfgang M. Neumann explains. Neumann does not aim to dramatically change Rezidor – he wants to build on the company’s unique culture and image, and further increase profitability. He feels closely allied to Ritter and has gone through a well-planned, thoughtful transition period together with him. That’s probably one of the reasons why Kurt Ritter was comfortable with passing the torch to Wolfgang M. Neumann. It’s an evolution, not a revolution.

Lindholmen, Gothenburg is growing like mad. Residences and office buildings are sprouting like wildflowers, the most recent – and spectacular – of which is the Radisson Blu Riverside Hotel. By: Paulina Bylén

www.radissonblu.com/riversidehotel-gothenburg

122 | z lifestyle magazine

The Radisson Blu Riverside Hotel is the most exciting hotel to launch in Gothenburg in many years. The structure resembles a vibrant sculpture with a polished façade, which is reflected in the water like fish-scales. The design is perfectly in line with the surrounding landscape of Lindholmen, and offers us a glimpse into the inevitably high-tech future. The façade facing the water resembles a bright, shimmering eye that overlooks the city. Even though Lindholmen is just five minutes away from the Gothenburg central station, it is a surprisingly calm environment surrounded by nature and water. The islet is home to more than 275 companies as well as the Chalmers University of Technology and the Lindholmen Science Park. From here, you can also catch the local ferries Älvsnabben and Älvsnabbare to Lilla Bommen, Klippan, or Rosenlund, where you’ll find two of Gothenburg’s most charming places – Linnéstaden and Haga. The hotel’s interior design by Bronwynn Welsh at Doos Architects is a reflection of Lindholmen, where the lively city meets the peaceful water. The rooms are cosy and warm, decorated with soft colours and high-quality fabrics. There’s an inviting living room, a restaurant, a bar and an open-air café by the river. There’s also a spa, a gym, a swimming pool, and a range of health treatments, all of which are complimented by an amazing view of the river and the harbour entrance. The top floor houses the spa and wellness area, where hotel guests have access to swimming pools, a sauna, a hot tub, and a gym. The restaurant, named the Cuckoo’s Nest, has a modern international menu for all occasions. It really pushes the envelope with its exciting design. There are classical Chesterfield armchairs, complimented by new, modern decorations that reflect the creative side of Gothenburg. The concept differs from those of traditional hotel restaurants in that the meals are available in different sizes depending on your appetite – small, medium or large. The Cuckoo’s Nest is a love letter to the innovation and forward-thinking that is Lindholmen.

liquorice festival

Salone 2013

This year’s international furniture fair in Milan will take place on 9–14 April. There will be over 2,500 exhibitors showcasing their new ranges of home furnishing, lighting, and office solutions. This year, French architect and Pritzker Prize winner Jean Nouvel will take a closer look at contemporary building concepts in his 1,200 square meter project “Offices for living”. He will explore new materials and technologies for creating comfortable, efficient, and eco-friendly work environments.

If there is one thing the Nordic countries have in common it’s the liquorice candy, with an inclination for the salty kind. The annual Swedish Liquorice festival is to be held for the fifth time April 20–21. The fair has quickly outgrown its previous locations and last year, more than 7,000 people visited. This year demands even bigger exhibition halls, which is why it moves to Annexet at Ericsson Globe in Stockholm for 2013. The festival is a tribute to all things liquorice and people who are fond of the black treats will have the opportunity to find a new favourite.

world 2013

Every spring, the world’s leading watch and jewellery brands unveil their new collections and show off the latest trends at the Baselworld trade show. From 25 April to 2 May, around 100,000 attendees from all over the world come to Basel, Switzerland, where about 1,800 companies present their collections. Architecture is more present than ever at Baselworld 2013. This year, the fair will take place in a new hall complex, finished just a few months ago. The new building is developed by architects Herzog & de Meuron and provides 38,000 square meters of exhibition space on three floors. Exhibition Centre Basel now spans a total of 141,000 square meters. The new hall complex makes it possible to have even more fascinating stand architecture. Hall 1, home to global brands in the watch and jewellery industry, will feature two- and three story stands. Chanel, for example, will install a new 1,580-square meter stand extending over three levels, designed by the American architect Peter Marino.

The Imperial Easter Eggs of the Romanov family is the first thing that springs to mind upon hearing the name Fabergé, but the famous jeweller has a rich history that stretches well beyonds the iconic egg. The exhibition “Fabergé: A Brilliant Vision”, open throughout the year at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, features more than 350 items, including Empress Josephine’s Tiara, the ornate Fire Screen Frame, several Imperial presentation boxes, and – of course – a selection of Fabergé eggs. The Imperial Diamond Trellis Egg, one of the Kelch Eggs, and the Nobel Ice Egg are all part of the showcase. Carl Fabergé made innovative use of enamelling and created 140 different hues of enamel, many of which have never been duplicated. Although he is mostly known for his creations made of enamel, precious stones, and metals, many of Fabergé’s pieces were simple stone carvings of animals, folkloric characters and flowers.

the Divine

Divine, fashion icon, Pioneer, negotiator, gay, uncompromising? A loved child has many names, but one thing is for certain: Greta Garbo is a true icon. By: Paulina Bylén

W

hat is false and what is true about one of the world’s most famous actresses? Well, she’s soon to adorn the new, Swedish 100 SEK note and is having a luxurious hotel suite dedicated to her memory in Stockholm. Some people are more visible and attract more attention than others, sometimes to such a degree that they are deemed to have “star quality”. We all know who they are, but opinions as to what causes it differ. Star quality, however, is not tangible – it’s a feeling, an energy, a charisma. That’s the prerequisite, and then there’s the old saying “being at the right place at the right time”. But the roads there differ vastly. In Greta Garbo’s case, the way to success was paved with decisiveness, and she stuck to her decisions – no matter what. – I have studied Garbo for many years and it is obvious that throughout her career, from being a shop assistant at Swedish department store PUB to negotiating her salary in Hollywood, she dared make hard and difficult decisions. Step by step, these decisions led to her exemplary success, says Rune Hellquist, chairman of Garbosällskapet (The Garbo Society). At the young age of 17, Greta Garbo decided to quit her job as shop assistant at PUB in order to play in a short film, Luffar-Petter, and later to enrol in Dramaten’s acting school, something her mother had advised against.

“You don’t quit steady employment at a department store for an uncertain and not necessarily bright future as an actress.”

Her next brave decision was to quit Dramaten’s acting school in order to appear in a film, since the rules were such that a student wasn’t allowed to make films while still attending the school. She played the part of Elisabeth Dohna in The Saga of Gosta Berling, released in 1924. Although rather lukewarmly received in Sweden, it was a great success abroad. She went on to accompany Mauritz Stiller, who directed The Saga of Gosta Berling, to the United States. He’d been contacted by the film company MGM and demanded to bring the 19-year-old actress along if he was to come at all, something MGM weren’t very pleased with. Upon arriving in the United States they didn’t receive the welcome they’d expected and it took three months before Stiller could arrange a meeting with the film company. But it wasn’t Stiller who got a breakthrough in Hollywood, it was Garbo. Stiller didn’t speak much English and didn’t like the American way of making films. In 1928, he returned to Sweden, where he died later that year. Half of his assets were bequeathed to Garbo.

Name: Greta Lovisa Gustafsson Born: 18 September, 1905, in Stockholm, Sweden Deceased: 15 April, 1990, in New York, USA Active: 1921–1941 First role: Commercial for department store PUB, called Herr och fru Stockholm (1920). Education: Dramaten’s acting school, 1922–1924 Breakthrough: The Saga of Gosta Berling (1924) First American film: Torrent (1926) Last film: Two-Faced Woman (1941) Academy Awards: Best actress in a leading role, in Romance (1930), Anna Christie (1931), Camille (1936), and Ninotchka (1939). In 1955, she was awarded The Academy’s Honorary Award, “for her unforgettable screen performances”.

Torrent from 1926 was Greta Garbo’s first film in America.

A

s early as 1926, Garbo was a huge success in the film Torrent. The following year saw the release of Flesh and the Devil, in which she starred against John Gilbert (with whom she also had a much-talked-about affair), and in 1928 she appeared in The Divine Woman, directed by Swedish director Victor Sjöström. Upon the film’s release, Garbo became known as The Divine. Thus, what we see here is an extremely determined young woman and that at the beginning of the twentieth century – very uncommon in those days. But as we all know, not only was she determined and goal-oriented, but also a trendsetting icon. She was, for example, the first woman to wear trousers on the silver screen. And she did not behave in an eager-to-please, “womanly” way. Also, in her acting she was sublime in comparison with her contemporaries, most of whom acted in a rather overblown, “theatrical” style. She turned weaknesses into strengths, and her plain and rather masculine clothing style became all the rage among both men and women all over the world. Everybody either wanted to be like Garbo or be with her. She became a role model, one of the greatest icons the world had ever seen. Apart from Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Marilyn Monroe, and James Dean, few belong to this exclusive category. If Greta Garbo had made up her mind, then there was no changing it. No matter what the circumstances. Like when she demanded a salary as high as those of her male colleagues, something that was unheard of at the time. 152

And the bosses at MGM wouldn’t hear of it. So Garbo simply stopped making films during the two years during which MGM refused to raise her salary. They even tried to scare her with threats of sending her back to Sweden if she didn’t comply with their conditions. It is admirable that she stuck to her demands and in the end prevailed. For a number of years towards the end of her career, Greta Garbo was the highest paid actress in Hollywood and for that matter in the entire world. She also managed to get other clauses written into the contract. For example, she was to choose director and whom she was to play opposite. If something did not go her way on the set of a film, she was apt to say “I think I’ll go back to Sweden!” – thus scaring the producers and thereby giving her even more leverage. For example, when the film team was to shoot a scene in which she appeared, the whole set was draped in cloth so that no one except those immediately involved in that particular scene would be able to see what was happening. Where did she get her strength from? A simple working-class girl from a poor area in Stockholm, without higher education, whose father died early and whose mother favoured the security of an ordinary life. Was it her background that spurred her on? It is obvious that Garbo’s lack of education led to an inferiority complex. The tough negotiations and her career were not a matter of chance, and it’s not hard to imagine that she felt a need to prove herself worthy, as sort of a compensation for her background.

The Mysterious Lady from 1928.

Garbo was never fond of large crowds and she was afraid of journalists. After Torrent in 1926, she would never again give an interview or attend a premiere.

MGM took to this, wanting to cultivate the myth about the aloof, inaccessible sphinx from the north, an endeavour in which they succeeded eminently. As a recluse she became even more fascinating. Garbo would even castigate people approaching her on the street during her long walks in New York. But although she stayed out of the limelight she did have quite a number of acquaintances and friends. She often spent weekends in the countryside homes of the British aristocracy and she socialised with John F. Kennedy, Jackie Onassis, and other celebrities of the day. That she was never seen in public with a partner, never married and never got children has naturally given rise to rumours about her sexual preferences, unknown children, and so forth. Her correspondence with Mimi Pollak, a friend and classmate from Dramaten’s acting school, led to rumours about homosexuality when the novel Djävla älskade unge by Andersén Axell was published in 2005. Djävla älskade unge is based on said correspondence between the two women and according to the author, Garbo was bisexual and in love with Mimi. When Mimi Pollak died in 1999, 33 letters surfaced in which Garbo called her Mimosa, Pollak’s pet name in acting school. For example, Garbo writes: ”As soon as I drink strong beer, I talk about you, my love. Maybe it’s discourteous to write love with a small l?” But Mimi’s son does not agree: ”I don’t believe that Greta Garbo was drawn to women at all. They talked that way in those days, women would say such things to each other. Sexually speaking, my mother liked men”, he says. Garbo’s love life thus remains a secret and speculations will continue to run rife. Naturally, her aloofness, and her cool and silent image have fuelled the rumours and the aura of mystique surrounding her persona. Someone wrote that the real reason for her aloofness was that she didn’t know English very well and thus found it hard to partake in discussions and understand jokes, preferring to remain silent and grave. Garbo stopped making films at the age of 37. For a couple of years after that she was involved in a number of productions that were never finished, among them a film to be called The Girl from Leningrad. Garbo later moved from Hollywood to New York, where she lived in seclusion. She never replied to fan mail and she never gave interviews. This year, Radisson Blu Strand Hotel in Stockholm has designed a suite in her honour, since Garbo stayed at this legendary celebrity hotel a number of times. And a couple of years from now, Greta Garbo will adorn the new 100 SEK note.

Garbo’s first line in a talking picture, Anna Christie from 1930, was: ”Give me a whisky”. For more information about Greta Garbo, contact Garbosällskapet in Högsby. www.garbosallskapet.hogsby.se

T

he newly furnished Great Garbo suite is part of the hotel’s centenary celebration. This was Stockholm’s first celebrity hotel and the suite is meant to convey the feeling of stepping into a black and white film in which glamour, splendour, and drama comprise a tantalising blend. Greta Garbo’s dramatic characters on the silver screen have inspired the colours – black and gold – of the interior design. The choice of fabrics – velvet and silk – was inspired by Greta Garbo’s gowns. Also, one of the rooms is furnished with mirrors inspired by her jewellery. – It’s been great fun to honour the memory of Greta Garbo in this way, since she stayed at the hotel on several occasions and, primarily, because she is one of the best actresses of all time, says Eva Kalling-Hansson, General Manager of the Radisson Blu Strand Hotel in Stockholm. In collaboration with interior designer Maria Nordin, the Radisson Blu Strand Hotel has transformed the suite into an oasis of everything Garbo. In order to get every detail right, Maria Nordin enlisted Rune Hellquist, chairman of Garbosällskapet (The Garbo Society). Furthermore, the suite was designed with the approval of Greta Garbo’s family. – It’s been very enjoyable to interpret film star Greta Garbo and the stylish elegance of her times my own way. My aim is to make the hotel guests feel like they’re stepping into a scene from a film starring the legendary, glamorous Greta Garbo, says Maria Nordin. The number of details is rather astonishing – a plethora of hats, sunglasses, and other objects with an immediate connection to Greta Garbo. The walls are adorned with numerous black and white photographs of the star herself, wearing different kinds of hats – an accessory Garbo seldom went anywhere without. Another example is the bottle of whisky. Garbo’s first line in a talking picture was: “Give me a whisky”. A waffle iron is another detail that might appear somewhat bewildering, but not for anyone knowledgeable about Garbo – apparently, she was a great fan of waffles! www.radissonblu.com/strandhotell-stockholm

RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS

Think of the

Eco-friendly buildings, energy-saving and a great new mascot – these are but some of the initiatives in Carlson Rezidor’s new Think Planet environmental programme. By: paulina bylén

– We are building a greener future! The good thing about being a hotel chain is that we can work with our staff and guests to implement technical innovations. We can try out new ideas in existing buildings or use them in projects still on the drawing board, says Inge Huijbrechts, VP Responsible Business at Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group. With round-the-clock operations, hotels consume a lot of energy. The fact of the matter is that Carlson Rezidor (Radisson Blu, Park Inn by Radisson Hotels, and Hotel Missoni) consumes more than 1,100 million kilowatt-hours a year – the equivalent of all the households in Luxembourg during the same period of time. This fact became an eye-opener, and Carlson Rezidor enrolled Inge Huijbrechts to develop new ideas for how to reduce the hotel chain’s environmental footprint. – We started our green programme more than 20 years ago, so many of our hotels have already implemented eco-friendly measures. However, we know we can do more – much more – and really work towards a sustainable future. We are currently introducing the latest energy-saving measures to all our hotels. These are technologies that our guests might not see – it all happens in the technical systems of the hotels. For example, when a guest leaves the room and takes out the key card, the lights go out and the air-conditioning enter its eco-mode, says Huijbrechts. Add to that Think Planet’s basic tools – simple and inexpensive solutions – that hotels have put in place to maximize energy-saving, like motion detectors that switch the light on when you enter a room or buzzer alarms on the refrigerators. Extensive investments are being made to equip all hotels with LED lighting, smart ventilation systems, and optimized heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. Nevertheless, energy-saving starts with the staff.

– At Carlson Rezidor, the staff will always Think Planet – and we ask our guests to do the same. A simple matter like switching off a computer screen when not in use is a great way to reduce your electricity consumption. In order to help remind everyone, we created a mascot for Think Planet – the cute firefly Lumi. We picked a firefly since these little creatures generate their own light in an eco-friendly way. Think Planet will also focus on new, green flagship hotels, such as the Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel in Stockholm and the Radisson Blu Hotel at the East Midlands Airport in the UK. The Waterfront Hotel is unique as it is the only hotel in Europe where all the hot water is heated by solar energy, and the building is also cooled with water from the surrounding lake Mälaren.

Classic style

with a

twist,

recycling and multifunction

In times of recession, it is said, we long for the classic, the familiar. This inspires furniture makers to recycle old products and ideas that are sure to work. In order to succeed and remain in the public eye today, furniture makers need to be braver and more creative. Traditional, Finnish Artek, keeping the legacy of Alvar Aalto’s products alive, celebrates the 80th anniversary of a stool called Stool. They also adopt the recycling trend by selling old, worn vintage furniture on their online shop, 2nd cycle Artek. A good example of keeping one’s legacy alive, I think. We are becoming more and more interested in and knowledgeable about interior design, and rather more fastidious in our choice of furniture. Artek are By: Camilla Julner fond of promoting and re-using classics from their vault and adding that little extra which might make the piece of furniture a classic in its own right, for example a new colour. This means that you might be able to find your old favourite with a twist, and newly produced to boot. Some manufacturers focus on innovations and develop new materials. Patience and smart machines give rise to new possibilities. Blå Station is a sterling example, a design company that dares to question production processes. They proudly exhibited design duo o4i’s lumpy shell chair at the Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair. A revolutionary chair, according to manager Johan Lindau, since it's challenging both technically speaking and as a design. This elegant chair is made from a very thin material that looks like crumpled paper, but at the same time it's comfortable and possible to stack. Technically speaking, it was well-nigh impossible to manufacture it from bent veneer.

Z Lifestyle's interior editor Camilla Julner has investigated, listened, and taken notes. She tells us about her favourite items and her sources of inspiration. Some of the new items at Salone del Mobile in Milano last spring are now available in Scandinavia.

The chair is the result of hard work and the ability to turn limitations into advantages. Comeback is a modern version of an old armchair, moulded in plastic and wood, and designed by Patricia Urquiola for Kartell. It took seven years to make and is yet another example of impressive, innovative craftsmanship. Also fascinating is Nendo, the design studio whose founder Oki Sato was the Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair's guest of honour. His installation at the entrance was gorgeous and reminiscent of a large fountain. Minimal use of material for maximum effect. The first time he attended the fair, he belonged to the new, young, and unestablished designers. Thus, it was extra exciting to see him back in Sweden, where he now has several collaborating partners, such as Swedese, David Design, and Berga Form. Oki Sato has been called the most brilliant designer of the 21st century and his designs are celebrated for their sublime humour and incessant desire to tell a story. Regarded as a star in the industry, Oki Sato has also worked with Cappellini, De Padova, Foscarini, and many others.

“Some manufacturers focus on innovations and develop new materials.”

Monochrome – entire rooms in a single shade

Colour is becoming more and more prevalent, and nowadays one might see entire rooms, including the objects, in one colour, such as navy blue with elements of black. This makes for a wide variety of personal choices. For me, it's incredibly inspiring to create a sophisticated and lively home in nuances of red for extravagant persons who dare to be unconventional, wildly mixing wine-red colours with burnt orange and raspberry red. However, it takes courage and patience to attain the right feeling. One does not design a home in a day. The ambience will be exclusive and sophisticated, and confer warmth and a sense of security. We use real rugs and worn leather, resulting in a cosy, classic style. Toy with the idea of including traces of various ethnicities and subcultures, such as hippies, sailors, and nomads – or, for that matter, Berbers and Tuaregs

draped in enormous lengths of cloth. Or think of an adventurous explorer and scientist, telling a story about inner and outer rooms. The home has become something of a stage, where we want to tell a story about ourselves or someone else. Since a few years back, this approach can also be seen in hotels, bars, and restaurants. the new elegance, with a touch of romance

We Northerners love blue as an accent. These days I have become incredibly inspired by interior designs done in elegant dark blue. With new approaches and a mixture of nuances in deep blue, incorporating strains of soft grey and elements of metal, cosy becomes elegant in a wholly new way – often in monochrome or geometric, graphic patterns. Black was also a dominant colour in Milan last spring, as was the accent colour: black. I came across a truly aesthetic experience, as I acquainted myself with a room with beautiful, Damast woven silk textiles in humorous patterns and artfully made ravens in fabric by Li Edelkoort, Rubelli at Rossana Orlandi. Black on black is romantic and sensual, creating drama in the home. Midnight blue verging on aubergine, with strains of shining black and in the form of large embroideries and jacquards, is truly beautiful and elegant. Block stripes and pinstripes, speaking directly to our subconscious, are never out of place. I have to admit that I feel affected by all sorts of stripes and in this I am hardly alone.

A textile wave will wash over us, with enormous lenghts of cloth, both for protection and solace. Ikea has realised this and are now going all out with their textile collections, and on top of that piece goods and a sewing machine. Hurrah for one’s own creativity! We’d love to see home-made interior design details, not least our curtains and pillows. I and many others like to showcase still lifes of various kinds of collections. It could be timeless, unique objects of ethnic provenance, a beautiful seashell or an object of art. Expensive or inexpensive, it doesn't matter. Old-fashioned, unique or simply a loved piece of furniture showing signs of long use. There are truly well-made, newly manufactured, comfortable “antiques” of high quality, as opposed to the newly manufactured, “old ” shabby chic that you soon grow tired of. RHL Collection is an exciting new furniture collection, and is reminiscent of the already classic Ralph Lauren style. It has that genuine feeling of antique, handpicked furniture, although the result of hours and hours of painstaking work, and it has a long life span.

“Oki Sato has been called the most brilliant designer of the 21st century” One of the founders of a large, international textile company, Manuel Canovas di Lorca, says that practically all of their designs have to have a couple of stripe patterns complementing the colourful ones. Movable and adaptable like nomads

We live in a transition period. We are flexible in our dayto-day lives and able to work practically anywhere. There are more freelancers around than ever before, and places of work have become less hierarchical. We work at home, in hotel lobbies, in cafés, and maybe even in an office. Strictly speaking, we don’t need a desk anywhere permanent – the laptop is our desk, with the family pictures on the screen instead of on the shelf. We can be anonymous or choose to sit near whatever colleagues we like to be around that day. Also, new places of work are being created, a crossbreed between the office and the home. Coffice in Stockholm is such a place, where members can share office space with colleagues or people in other professions. You can book a conference room or a room with private telephone in a café environment, in accordance with your needs for the day. In my opinion, this is more stimulating and conducive to creativity than working from home.

Stripes playing with light

Tatou, the latest lamp designed by Patricia Urquiola for Flos, is an example of open-worked elegance with a beautiful stripe pattern, inspired by ancient, Japanese armour and creating beautiful shadow play. The lamp is available in many different designs and will probably become a classic. Marcel Wander’s brilliant, bright ceiling lamps Valentine and Baby Valentine are sparklingly glamorous and stylishly humorous, the manufacturers Mooi being among my favourites. The urban nomads, consciously selling out their lifestyle

I love to travel and the sense of freedom it entails, but I have a tendency to bring too much stuff. Does that sound familiar? I would prefer to live more in accordance with my ideals, like an urban nomad. I would prefer an exciting, playful life, without too much bothering stuff. I like things to have several functions and attractive colours. Objects serving several purposes give you freedom to move around, but I haven’t quite attained that goal yet.

More textiles to the people!

– The more time we spend in front of screens, the greater our need to feel and experience textiles will become, trend guru Li Edelkoort predicts.

But the new design generation, rising out of a cultural, urban melting pot, combines well-known designs with unknown, electric colour palettes, creating a very energizing mix. Fascinating, technical solutions such as wilderness tents have been sources of inspiration for the lamp Jeahna by Zero. Flowery ornaments, technical materials, and ultralight constructions play with light and reflections. Lively colours, bold patterns gleaming like candy wrappers, green and pink combined with white – all this makes for endless freshness. Pink is big in art and in interior design, pink is now invading the living room as the basic colour. An unexpected mix of Band-Aid pink and pure light pink proves to be a sensuous and wonderful combination. Pink will become the dominating colour in home design in the future and I for one look forward to it! Patricia Urquiola’s puffy armchairs and wonderful silk rugs for Moroso, which I saw in Milan last spring, are now available in Scandinavia. Paper and pop up

Japanese origami and paper in flat dimensions are appearing everywhere. Paper is a cheap material to work with, and the need for the tactile and the handwritten is growing. There is talk about the pop up generation, favouring interactivity

“The home has become some thing of a stage, where we want to tell a story about ourselves or somebody else.” and creative solutions according to one’s needs and without any rules, and this is something we will definitely see a lot more of. The future is already here and we are currently adjusting and adapting to it, and beginning to see the possibilities. We might be forced to make more conscious choices – what is really important? A person with a great deal of insight and a source of inspiration is, quite naturally, Li Edelkoort. – Now that we can go online in the wilderness, our need for the urban lifestyle is no longer that great. On top of that, it is hard to motivate yourself to live in a one-room flat that costs as much as a country-house. This has to do with our increased awareness. We choose our lifestyle and our habits with care, says Li Edelkoort. Demands on form, function, and environmentally friendly materials have become a given for any and all.

Radisson Blu Plaza Hotel Helsinki is an eclectic mixture of Renaissance Revival, Art Deco and an ultramodern vision of the future – a place where traditional and contemporary values come to meet. By: Paulina Bylén

The decision to create an unusually bold flagship hotel in the classic building on Mikaelsgatan in Helsinki came from a desire to put the experience first. A number of surveys of the hotel’s guests added further support to the idea that the hotel itself was to play the lead role. This is why they have created so many different environments that bring out such a wide range of different emotions. Finnish architecture firm Archeus tailored a number of creative solutions for the hotel’s rooms and spaces, such as focussing on the lighting in their interior designs. One of these solutions was to transform the hotel’s anonymous corridors into fascinating, experience-oriented galleries of light. The initial plan was only to renovate the rooms, but expanded along the way into a complete overhaul of the building. The new plan became to create a hotel out of the ordinary. – The scope of the renovation has increased over the course of the project, and Radisson Blu has really challenged us to come up with new ideas. They added lots of new requests along the way, which turned this into an astounding project, says Sanna Pääkkönen, architect at the Archeus architecture firm in Helsinki. Several different styles have been combined into a celebration of old and new. Original oak panels from 1917, stained glass windows, Alvar Aalto’s Artek furniture, ultramodern high-tech solutions, and contemporary Finnish designs appear alongside one another. However, the various styles have been designed to different parts of the building. The hotel is a listed building and a modern Finnish classic, and has an annex from the 90's that was designed by Valjakka from Arkval Arkitekt. The interior design is bright and playful, and has a lot of innovative solutions. z lifestyle magazine | 173

eral different furniture styles share the space, among them the classic Finnish chair “the Egg” that creates a sound-absorbing nest in which the guests can work and think in peace. The goal was to get away from formal and stiff conventions. Putting your feet up should come naturally in this environment. The sound has also been thoroughly overhauled and can now be directed like beams of light, meaning that you can decide whether or not you wish to partake of the sound. Pretty clever. Who hasn’t wished they could to turn off unwanted music in a public place. Well, now you can! Bar 7 Blings is located on the ground floor, in the heart of the historical building. It’s a feast of oak panels, impressive ceiling height, stained glass windows by artist Juho Rissanen, designs by Alvar Aalto and paintings by Sam Vanni, to name a few. Archeus also decided to create a backstory for their bar, which is a trend among many new bars and restaurants around the world. They played with the idea of achieving a library look and feel, where items and memories from travels around the world have been gathered. There’s a warm sense of home, centred around the concept of travels. The bar is open more or less around the clock, although it's closed on Sundays. The Kitzens Restaurant is a completely different story, and will be featured in a separate article in the next issue of this magazine. We can, however, conclude that a lot of effort has gone into this restaurant, which is something of an experimental flagship that is intended to attract Helsinki locals as well. The mix of hotel guests and locals is a great recipe for a vivid and successful restaurant. In addition to the interactive, electronic menus (as previously mentioned) that cater to romantic dinners and business meetings alike, it is also possible to send electronic comments and notes to the staff. Guests choose from five different menus based on five cuisines. It is important to note that these aren’t cross-over menus, but entirely separate menus that keep the different traditions intact. This means that you can order a traditional Swedish “Wallenbergare” while the person next to you orders an authentic Italian pizza. The staff is more like advisors than waiters. The concept is called “Made by You” and the goal is to create the ultimate, individual culinary experience. – We want Kitzens and the entire Plaza Hotel to be “Made by You”, where our customers decide what kind of hotel experience is best for them, says Food and Beverage Manager Ari Eilola.

“The well known Double Bubble lamp by

The well-known Double Bubble lamp by Eero Aarnio was flipped upside-down and attached to the room ceilings. The prototype was so successful that the manufacturer decided to mass-produce the new design. The technical aspects were solved by constructing canopies for the rooms (the modern ones) that serve an aesthetic as well as a functional purpose, as they hide the latest technology used in the rooms. Guests can connect their Ipads or laptops to their rooms in order to alter the room’s temperature, lighting and sound. It’s an experience within an experience, so to speak. In addition, the restaurant has electronic menus that allow for specific orders right down to the individual raw ingredients, and they also make possible instant compliments to the chef. – We took the notion of the experience one step further, and are really intent on raising people’s expectations. There’s something for everyone here, from yoga mats in the rooms to unique culinary experiences. The life of the traveller is also to be facilitated by the latest technology, as is their ability to relax, says Inari Lehtinen, General Manager of the Radisson Blu Plaza Hotel. The sound was another important factor to control. In the old part of the hotel the sound would often be blaring and bouncing between walls and ceilings. The architects had to work hard to create an atmosphere where the classic ceiling height and the old construction materials could be married with soft, directed sound sources that encourage relaxation and peace of mind, while keeping the environment versatile. There is, for example, a business lounge where sev-

About the building The historical building dates back to 1917 and was constructed to house the headquarters of SOK, the then largest cooperative in Finland. Architects Kaunas and Oiva Kallio were inspired by Renaissance Revival, Art Deco and several other eras. A new section was added to the hotel in the 1990s and was designed by renowned architect Valjakka from Arkval Architect. The building is listed by Finland’s National Board of Antiquities. The hotel is certified by the nordic Swan ecolabel.

Why Helsinki? Helsinki has definitely made its mark on the world map. In 2012, it was named the World Design Capital and celebrated its 200th anniversary. The city has about 500,000 inhabitants and bubbles with a Scandinavian vibrancy all year around. The city has 72 museums, over 1,000 restaurants and is surrounded by the fantastic Nordic countryside.

Award-winning hotel The hotel has already received the TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Award for 2013 and has been recommended by The Michelin Guide.

The British

Hollywood vogue text & photography BY james holm

The world’s best car has become even better. At least if Jeremy Clarkson from Top Gear, who extolled the previous generation of Range Rover to the skies, is to be believed. The new Range Rover Vogue is here - a super luxurious SUV, practically dripping with premium engineering. The slimming cure, aimed at cutting nearly half a metric ton in comparison with the previous version, has entailed markedly better performance and lower fuel consumption. The new Range Rover pushes the limits for how comfortable a car can be. After a trial run, you'll spontaneously want to visit everybody else driving this car, since they probably have good taste and appreciate that little extra something the Ranger Rover offers. When it comes to sports cars, there are regular sports cars. Then there are super sports cars. And then there are ultra sports cars. Range Rover Vogue belongs to the category of ultra premium SUVs. Or it would, if such a category existed. The history of Range Rover started early – in the early fifties – with experiments within the Rover Company, already featuring the Land Rover among its models. In the mid-sixties, the company told its car designer, Graham Bashford, to design a concept with the comfort of a private car, but with the cross-country capabilities of a Jeep. A couple of years later the design was finished, but it wasn’t until the summer of 1970 that Rover Company made their first trial runs. The model was an immediate success among British estate owners, wishing to travel comfortably in spite of the English countryside’s poor roads. Proof of the Range Rover’s brilliant road-holding qualities came in 1972, when the car became the first vehicle ever to cross the American continent from north to south. According to an anecdote, the brand became so prestigious that a prostitute in Bois de Boulogne in Paris preferred customers driving Range Rovers to those driving Ferraris. This generation of Range Rover is the fourth. During the ten years since the third, the brand has been bought and sold several times. Both BMW and Ford have been the custodians of Rover/Jaguar, which is currently owned by Indian Tata Motors. According to speculations, BMW bought the brand solely because they wanted to obtain the four-wheel drive technique.

Motor Tata has gone all out with the brand in recent years. They’ve added several new models, the most recent one being the Range Rover Evoque. The changes since the first version of Range Rover usually fall within the luxury category. The first generation was more of a utility kind of car and you could basically hose down the interior to clean it out – something that would not go down well with the new model’s interior, cram-full of electronics as it is. Apart from the luxurious details, the Range Rover is lighter, stronger, and faster. It is 420 kilos (925 pounds) lighter than the previous model, resulting in far better performance. One of the reasons the new model is so much lighter is that the monocoque consists of aluminium instead of heavier materials, like steel (a monocoque being a self-supporting bodywork construction). The loss of weight has resulted in markedly lower fuel consumption and lower carbon dioxide emissions. The phenomenal air suspension makes the speed bumps feel like pebbles. However, confining your Range Rover to the city is doing yourself a disservice. This car is incredibly potent, practically melding the road with countryside terrain. A completely new version of the Terrain Response system makes the car itself perceive what kind of terrain it is being driven in. There is a wide selection of driving programs that should suffice to counter even the worst of circumstances. The new Range Rover manages more advanced terrain than you will ever dare to drive in. Similar to the range anxiety of electric cars, some SUVs have what might be called passability anxiety. Let's just say the new Range Rover does not have this problem. As far as appearance is concerned, generation three and four are very much alike. There is some talk of a minor face-lift and of the fact that the brand is being updated rather slowly. But then again, why totally change something that’s been a winning concept for more than 40 years simply for the sake of change? The Range Rover is a style icon that few other cars can compete with. It's no coincidence that Queen Elizabeth II's favourite horse-less carriage is the Range Rover. The new Range Rover has undergone some smaller changes. For instance, both the headlights and the boot lid ”run around the corner” and continue along the car’s sides. Nevertheless, no one will fail to realize that this most certainly is a Range Rover. The general design is well established and easily recognisable.

“ It is no coincidence that Queen Elizabeth II's favourite horse-less carriage is the Range Rover.”

Motor

When you enter the new Range Rover and close the door, silence descends. Total silence. The car is incredibly cosy and anything but confined. The back seat is available as the usual three-seater but also as two Executive Class chairs. The shoulder distance has increased by 12 centimetres (4.7 inches), and the leg-room has increased by all of 118 millimetres (4.6 inches). The front head restraints are equipped with media screens and wireless headphones for restless passengers. No one should have to be uncomfortable or bored in the new Range Rover. As for the motor, there are three main alternatives – a diesel V6, a diesel V8, and a petrol V8. The SDV8 is preferable – a 4.4 litre (0.96 imperial gallons) diesel V8 with 339 horsepower and a torque of 700 Nm. According to the manufacturer, mixed fuel consumption makes for 0.87 litres (0.19 imperial gallons) per 10 kilometres (6.2 miles), which for most users probably means about a litre (0.21 imperial gallons). In contrast, however, to what the petrol V8 consumes, this is perfectly acceptable. The SDV8 is remarkably quite and smooth. Something else that has changed considerably since the first generation Range Rover is the price tag. The car fetches a price of about 7,200 euros (5,980 pounds sterling), whereas the basic price for an SDV8 is approximately 138,200 euros (115,000 pounds sterling). So, does this mean more car for the money? Certainly! Few cars can compete with the Range Rover, and generation four pushes the limits for passability and absolute comfort. Mr. Clarkson need not worry – the new Range Rover Vogue is the best car in the world.

New Executive Chef, new concept – and a recommendation by the Michelin Guide. We took the lift to the 34th floor of the Radisson Blu Plaza Hotel in Oslo. By: Paulina Bylén

F

rench born Executive Chef Mathieu Soulerguess mixes Norwegian and French ingredients with a playful twist at 34 Restaurant. As the name suggests, the restaurant is located on the 34th floor of Oslo’s tallest building, and has a phenomenal view. Last year the restaurant was recommended in the Michelin Guide, in particular for its high-quality ingredients, which also come from local producers. In fact, some of their ingredients can be found in large water tanks in the actual restaurants, as guests can choose which lobster or oysters they would like to partake of. – We launched our new concept last summer, which involved designing a new culinary experience and a new interior, says Toni Quiogue, Restaurant Manager at 34 Restaurant. Poached monkfish in red wine with garlic and onion chutney is one example of the restaurant’s playful dishes, drawing inspiration from both the Norwegian and the French cuisine. Other features include Norwegian goat cheese, home-made crisp bread and lavender sauce – Norwegian ingredients with an international twist. – We want our dishes to be surprising, Toni Quiogue explains. The chefs have also put together a special lobster menu, and the main menu changes four times a year: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. The wine list consists exclusively of “old world wines”. French, Italian, and Spanish wines have been selected to match the various compositions. In addition to the new cuisine they have also given their interior a brand new look. Dark shades, subdued grey, and luxurious beige make for a cosy, mature and elegant impression. The atmosphere is a great complement to the amazing view. For the best possible experience, we recommend a visit in time for the sunset. www.radissonblu.com/plazahotel-oslo Don’t miss the 34 SkyBar An aperitif in the sky bar on the same floor is a great way to start your dinner. The imaginative drink list is composed specifically for 34 SkyBar by internationally renowned bartenders.

hel Ved (Natur & Kultur)

Perhaps you don’t know who Chuck Palahniuk is, but you have probably watched the movie Fight Club once or twice. The screenplay for that film is based on his novel from 1996. His books are full of weird characters, tragic destinies and gross details, but are also described with wit and intelligence. My favourite example of Palahniuk‘s twisted mind is Sur vivor, which tells the tale of a male cult member, who becomes the only sur vivor of his sect’s sudden mass suicide. He gains world fame, but the fame will soon become grotesque and unpleasant. Another great thing about this book is that amidst all the absurdities, the stor y still manages to be satirical. Highly recommended for readers who like to be challenged and surprised.

Hel Ved is a passionate account on everything concerning, well, firewood, and is a huge bestseller in Norway. Lars Mytting explains the history, the different tree types, all the inside tips on fast chopping, energy efficient fire and heating techniques, and – probably most importantly – numerous different ways of stacking the firewood. It may seem like a dull subject, but Lars Mytting’s book has created a popular topic at Norwegian dinner parties, and private stacking competitions are not uncommon. Hel Ved is perhaps the most hurting example of time-consuming meaninglessness of the world’s sheltered upper class, but it is also a loving reflection on one of the essentials in life. Where there is life, there is fire. And where there is fire, there is now a pattern of beautifully stacked firewood.

Waits/Corbijn “77-11” I must admit that I am more fond of the concept of Tom Waits than I am of his music. But there is something about that man that somehow seems equally frightening and intriguing. His career goes back to the seventies. In fact, the young Anton Corbijn started shooting black/white photos of Waits in Holland in 1977, at the entrance of two long and impressive artistic careers. This book not only implies, it states, that Anton Corbijn and Tom Waits have thrived equally from each other’s presence. Which is quite a beautiful thought in itself.

A Day In The World (aday.org) The idea is simple: tell photographers all over the world to shoot their daily lives on 15 May, 2012. The result was overwhelming, and more than 100,000 images have been narrowed down to a shortlist of one thousand by an international panel of photo editors. Besides having been exhibited at Kulturhuset in Stockholm, the one thousand best photos are collected in this 512-page brick of a coffee table book. Browsing through the snapshots from 160 countries gives us a fairly unique view of the world. The whole project was initiated by the Swedish non-profit foundation Expressions of Humankind. Searching for Sugar Man (Legacy Recordings/Sony Music)

Live Till I Die (Svenska Inspelningar/ Universal)

The most beloved man in music this past year is Sixto Rodriguez – the forgotten folksinger who never made it in the US, but who unknowingly became a symbol for freedom and liberation in South Africa several years later. A humble documentary about his life and (resurrected) music career landed Swedish director Malik Bendjelloul an Academy Award earlier this year. The film was criticized by some for leaving out important information – but then again, is it really possible to cover someone’s lifework in a mere 85 minutes? Truth be told, the script-like storytelling and fiction-like aura surrounding Rodriguez is what makes Searching for Sugar Man so incredibly heart-warming and unforgettable. Oh, and the music is amazing! Like a young Bob Dylan – only better.

Robyn, Lykke Li and The Knife are fantastic, but Sweden has been longing for someone to seriously challenge the coolness and attitude of British phenomenon M.I.A. Back in the 90’s there was Leila K – and now there is Elliphant. Her cocky, noisy and eclectic blend of dancehall, punk, pop and electronica has taken a world of bloggers and hipsters by storm. Ellinor Olovsdotter’s music career was allegedly kickstarted by a spontaneous per formance with an Indian band in Goa. The band took her on tour, and shortly thereafter her artist persona Elliphant was born. If you would like to get acquainted with her music, a good place to start would be the beautiful music video for “Down on life”.

Justin Timberlake

Justin Timberlake has been a guilty pleasure of many music lovers, even back when he was a perfectly moulded pop star in 90's boy band‘N Sync. They never reached the heights of Take That and NKOTB, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Ever since his debut solo single Like I Love You in 2002, Justin Timberlake has developed into one of the world’s most versatile and credible artists, even when fooling around on Saturday Night Live. He is one of those artists who can get away with practically anything. The 20/20 Experience is a divertion from the traditional pop and dance floor route. Instead, Justin Timberlake dives further into a sensual ocean of R&B and soul, with a production so slick and flawless it makes most other albums PALE in comparison. JT has proved that he belongs among the likes of Prince, Michael Jackson, and D’Angelo in the history of pop music.

Biffy Clyro Opposites (Warner) Biffy Clyro is Britain’s biggest and most talked about rock band at the moment, and is about to conquer the Nordic countries. The Scottish trio has per formed at a sold-out Wembley Arena in London, but is surprisingly unknown here in Scandinavia. However, with the recent, incredibly ambitious double-album Opposites absolutely dominating the UK char ts, things are about to change. While Biffy Clyro’s studio albums might be considered mainstream by some, their live music will satisfy even the most hardcore of rock fans. Having played together for 18 years, their live per formances are impeccable, epic, and sexy, with a loyal fan base that sings along to ever y song. You should definitely go to one of their concer ts if you get the chance. You won’t regret it.

Side Effects crime, drama, thriller I have a good friend who works in the pharmaceutical industr y. He is of the opinion that the media always por trays his profession in rather dark colours. In literature and on film they are por trayed rather like villains (John Le Carre’s The Constant Gardener is a good example). I think that my friend will like Steven Soderbergh’s Side Ef fects, a film about the pharmaceutical industr y in the United States – especially since it deals with antidepressants. Sure, the industr y is criticised here, but the film is also a multi-layered thriller, taking many unexpected turns. Even those taking pills themselves will be enter tained and feel that the criticism is probably spot on. Starring Jude Law, Rooney Mara, and Channing Tatum. The latter also appears in action film White House Down.

The Great Gatsby

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby has been adapted for the big screen several times - in 1926, 1949, 1974 (so far the most well-known adaptation, starring Robert Redford), 2000, and 2002. Now Baz Luhrmann will present his version, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as the mysterious young millionaire Jay Gatsby. Visually speaking, Luhrmann is a very talented director (remember his Moulin Rouge), but it is rumoured that this production has been beset by problems. Is this true? Has it influenced the result? We’ll soon know.

Evil Dead horror

White House Down action, drama

Hollywood loves remakes -– as we're all aware – and a couple of new ones are currently in the works: Evil Dead and The Great Gatsby. The original Evil Dead was released in 1981 and is a competent (and gor y) low-budget film that made a name for its director, Sam Raimi (who’s gone on to make the Spider-Man films with Tobey Maguire). Raimi has produced the remake, directed by Fede Alvarez. Judging from the trailer, the stor yline remains the same – although now it has a bigger budget and even more gore. "Less humour, more horror”, Rami told me when I met him in March.

White House Down will be released this summer and is an example of how Hollywood often makes several films on the same theme at the same time. White House Down is a film about terrorists taking over the White House – the same as Olympus Has Fallen, to be released in May. In the latter Gerard Butler defends the president. So, who is the most capable? Gerard Butler or Channing Tatum? We’ll soon know the answer, and we’ll also know whether or not the fact that Olympus Has Fallen is to be released first will make it a bigger box of fice hit than White House Down.

Design classics

Black Magic

You find them everywhere. Nespresso machines are spreading across the globe like a wildfire, thanks to an ingenious marketing campaign, a classic design, and high degree of innovation. Radisson Blu was the first to have an award winning partnership with Nespresso, and you can find the machines in their business hotel rooms. By: Paulina Bylén

The Nespresso concept was invented as early as 1976 by Nestlé employee Éric Favre, but it didn’t catch on right away. It would take another 10 years for the concept to take off, when businessman Jean-Paul Gaillard came up with “Le Club” (Nespresso’s membership club). The idea of a small, smart, and nice-looking machine is, of course, tailored for a modern world where time is becoming increasingly more valuable. The machines were initially intended for restaurants, but the households took them to their hearts. Individual portions of espresso coffee that tastes surprisingly good for being ready-made have become a real hit. The capsules are produced by Nespresso and can only be bought online or from a small number of Nespresso shops. The idea is to make the product feel exclusive, and to maintain its high status. In addition to a number of models with different features there is also a range of accessories, including biscotti, espresso cups, and milk frothers. The Nespresso machines sold in Europe are manufactured by Krups, Magimix, Miele, Siemens and Delonghi. The ones sold in Scandinavia distinguish themselves by featuring the manufacturer’s logotype. In recent years, hotels have also taken an interest in these small, practical machines. Alessi 1994

a slice of

scandinavia

The cheese slicer was invented in 1925 by Norwegian carpenter Thor Bjørklund. It was inspired by the hand plane tool used by carpenters as well as an insatiable craving for that perfect slice of cheese – and it has spread across Europe, one slice at a time. The cheese slicer is particularly popular in Scandinavia, where people are known for their love of hard cheese. Did you know that the average Scandinavian person eats 19 kilos of cheese every year? That’s 5 slices of cheese a day!
