How to not forget Personal collection of memories There are few kinds of memories. It’s been told that we are able to code in our memory things by our 5 senses: sigh, hearing, taste, smell and touch. Some scientists say that not only brain but every cell of our body is engaged in this process – if so - we have huge possibilities to keep our past so precisely as in computer database. In practice we know that it’s not that easy. Things that we remember the best are ones connected with the strongest emotions or that ones we repeat the most often. So how to keep our memories strong and close? Here are some ideas: 1. The best way to keep all own emotions, inspirations, impression in one place is to write diary - daily, every third day or weekly. This is good way, especially can help your biographer if you become famous singer or criminal :) It requires some determination and it’s not for everybody, since some people prefers to read other stories that one from own life. If we decide to do it, we should buy safe deposit box to avoid it to be found by unsuitable hands.

6

2. The way to remember other people, you can ask them to leave you message in your diary. This idea in contrast to the first one requires 0 efforts from your side :) I used to have one when I was in primary school, other kids where writing funny rhymes there. This idea came to me again accidentally last year while I was in Bulgaria. I met one girl there and we became really good friends. She took my new notebook, and wrote me on first page “Dear Mariola”, describing how we met, how great time we spent in rest of the page. I decided to keep this notebook alive. I have it with me when I travel and when my way is crossed by the person I would like to keep on my mind. Each person is different so each note is different, but the best thing in this idea is that people mostly write nice things about you – anytime you have bad day, and you think that everything goes on wrong direction – open diary and you will be cheered up! :)

7

3. Photos are one of the best way to freeze present time. Right now when almost all have camera in mobile phones we have unlimited possibilities to take photos anywhere anytime.

6

In the room I’ve rented I covered half of the wall with the photos of some lovely places I saw – waking up is never pleasant, but waking up in this entourage was not that bad finally. If we are determined enough we may realize are nice photo projects like “family – one year – one photo”, http://zonezero.com/en/open/158-the-arrow-of-time . We can not only catch the passing moments, but as well reconstruct the past according the old

7

Anyway it’s good change to not be a Chinese tourist always, but to take “mind photo” using our 5 senses from time to time. 4. There are “our songs” – the melodies which turn our brain to sentimental mode and remind us important events like prom, first dance with our love, amazing vacation in Spain. In Macedonia, when we travelled with Julie, Mathilde & Camille -French volunteers to Ohrid, we’ve rented car. There were many mountains on the way, and no service so we couldn’t listen to radio. We had only 1 CD – we were listening to it constantly than firstly we were desperately bored with these songs,

8

but after 3 days, at the end of the trip we all agreed that one of the songs - Bijelo dugme “Hajdemo u planine” is kind of our Macedonian anthem song, and we kept listening it until the end of EVS. You know, when I hear this song now I smile widely :) 5. Sending postcards is thing that I like almost that much as receiving postcards. It’s old fashioned, and if I compare it to SMS, email, MMS – my favorite one! You have just few lines to briefly describe your feelings/company/place. It’s good option to magazine your own and your folks ones memories because on exotic stamp you have a date/post office address so you directly can indicate when and where this memory need to be catalogued.

9

Beside few friends I always send it to family home, that’s why after some time I can remind myself what was a name of our boat in Greece, or why I was walking without shoes in February at Oxford street :) 6. Videos – this one may take some times but it’s the most efficient – we have view & sound - all in one. If you have GoPro, you may video the craziest idea as bunji jumping, or just drinking beer project with random travelers in Sofia. I did few video-photo projects where the movie is constructed from many photos – one for my ex-boss, one for my friend, one for my brother, and even one in Macedonia. 7. Collecting tickets – personally I did it in terms of concerts, theatres, cinemas tickets. I used to put it on cork board, but seems there was not enough space I stopped to be that regular. Once I had couchsurfer from Serbia, and Aleksandra said – I had quite similar room – photos on the wall and all entrance tickets on the board, I visited her in Serbia, and it was true I have to say :) My another friend collects train/plain tickets – he is great traveler and he said one day he would love to count all that kilometers he came across.

10

8. Food – to bring back memory of the childhood, we shall only remind ourselves the smell of the pie done by our mums. Somebody remembers menu of the first date or the taste of the sandwich prepared from the conserve in the mountain. Sometimes we cannot eat some food just because it’s connected to some unpleasant happenings. To keep memories about the place I visit for longer time I always bring some spices, specialties or sweets. When I was living with flatmates, after every trip I was organizing a little dinner when we were eating and drinking % something typical delicacy to the area I was back from and all the stories were nicely told during such a nice evening.

11

9. Souvenirs – besides spices I buy always 3 things – scarf for my mum, fridge magnet to my family home and for my cousin, glasses for vodka for my brother. Beside magnet example, I try to choose kind of practical things, rather to be use in almost everyday life that to collect dust on the shelf :) From other items I collect – I may point maps - maybe because I have this unique talent to get lost almost everywhere, even in Kocani, from where unfortunately I didn’t manage to get a map :). Anyway in Macedonia I’ve bought Macedonian scarf for sport fans - in Poland I will keep my fingers crossed for Vardar team in handball! :)

12

10. Letter in the bottle/memory box –if we have special occasion we may prepare special mysteriously so called now “object”. Once when I was a bridesmaid, & I was responsible for organizing hen party, I heard about idea of letter in the bottle. We all know what that is, and heard about it while reading pirates stories. However it’s excellent concept not only for one leg sailors. In my friend letter I included instruction with questions, how she imagines her marriage in 5 years, what will change after marriage, what she thinks about her future husband and her now and in the future…and so on and so on…, for all that question she had to response and lock the bottle for 10 years. After she could compare her earlier beliefs with current stage. About memory box I heard mostly while little baby is born, and mum is collecting first shoes, footprints, photo to be given when the kid is an adult. The things I will do will be planting a tree after my kid is born and buying a bottle of good champagne to be open after 18 years :) If you once say, I have nothing, remember –you have your memories!

13

11. Tattoo – this is very permanent way of remembering things, recommended only for a person with conservative attitude to trends and fashions. 12. Meeting family & friends and reminding all good times! The best way to safe memories, to refresh it from different perspectives, to hear the most favorite anecdotes of our uncle and terrify history when we were afraid a big bats when we were a kid, or when we destroyed our brother’s new toy. Sometimes sweet, sometimes annoying, every time priceless. 14

Animals: Dogs

Kangal & Šarplaninac

Kangal: The Kangal is a breed of livestock guardian dog, originating from the Kangal district in Sivas Province, Turkey. It is of an early mastiff type with a solid, pale tan or sabled coat, and with a black mask. According to the official Kangal organisations in Turkey - Cynology Federation Of Turkey (KIF) and Ankara Kangal Derneği (ANKADER) Kangals in Turkey may also be brindle or recessive black tan pattern; with or without a black mask; and/or with white markings. While the Kangal is often referred to as a sheep dog, it is not a herding dog, but rather a flock guardian that lives with the flock of sheep to actively fend off wolves, bears and jackals. The Sivas Kangal Dog’s protectiveness, loyalty and gentleness with small children and animals has led to its growing popularity as a guardian for families as well, as it regards people as its “flock” and guards them with extreme devotion.

15

Animals: Dogs

Appearance: There are subtle variations given in the standards used by different countries when describing the height and weight. In the Kangal’s homeland of Turkey, the only measurements desired are quoted by KIF as a height at the withers of 65 to 78 cm (26 to 31 in) with a two cm tolerance either way. KIF does not differentiate between male and female statistics.[1] Although other standards internationally are fairly consistent with each other, they are at odds with KIF as their guidelines are for a larger dog.

16

The Kangal Dog is not as heavy as some other mastiff breeds, allowing it greater speed and agility than larger dogs. Kangal dogs can reach speeds of up to 50 km (30 miles) per hour. The under-layer provides insulation against both severe Anatolian winters and the fierce summer sun, while the outer-layer repels water and snow. This combination of coat allows it to regulate its core temperature more efficiently, while the coat is dense enough to repel rupture from wolf bites. Further differences between the KIF standard and those used internationally are found in the guidelines for coat and colour. The registered Kangal organizations in Turkey, Cynology Federation Of Turkey (KIF)—to an extent— and Ankara Kangal DerneÄ&#x;i (ANKADER) do not regard coat colour as a breed defining feature. Brindle, recessive black tan pattern, white markings and a longer coat are regarded as Kangal and are not usually indicative of cross breeding, as the KIF standard as significant restrictions on accepted color and is more restrictive with respect to white markings than any of the other international standards, as white markings are only accepted on the chest and on the tip of the tail, whereas standards from other kennel clubs allow white markings on the feet and legs.

17

Rather it is head structure and morphology that differentiate Kangal from other Çoban KÜpegi. In contrast other kennel clubs describe coat and colour as perhaps the most visible traits that distinguish the Kangal from the Akbash and Anatolian. The coat must be short and dense, not long or feathery, and of a pale fawn or tan color with varying amounts of sable guard hairs. All Kangal Dogs have a black facial mask, and black or shaded ears. White at certain points (chest, chin, toes) may or may not be allowed, depending on the standard. Some heavily sabled Kangals also have darker legs and chests. Most importantly, the coat should not be broken, brindled, or spotted. Cropping of the ears is done for several reasons, including the cultural demonstration of ownership vice feral dog, for appearance and for protection, as long ears can be vulnerable in a physical confrontation with a predator. It is also believed that cropping improves the dog’s hearing because sound can travel into ear easier. It should be noted the cropping of ears is illegal in the UK.

18

Animals: Dogs Temperament : The Kangal dog is calm, controlled, independent, powerful and protective. They may be aloof towards strangers, but a well-socialized Kangal Dog is friendly with visitors and especially children. They must never be shy or vicious. A well-trained Kangal is sensitive and alert to changing situations, responding to threats with judicious warnings and courageous action if necessary. They make good guardians of livestock and humans alike, but they may not be suitable for inexperienced dog owners, as the independent intelligence of the Kangal makes for a difficult pupil. Protective behavior : A working Kangal on duty will station itself on a high vantage point overlooking its flock. On hot days, the dog will dig itself a hollow in the ground to keep cool. Novices learn by staying close to older dogs. The dogs will work in pairs or teams depending on the size of the flock, taking up positions around the sheep and changing their positions as needed. The intensity of their patrols around the sheep increases at nightfall.

19

Animals: Dogs When suspicious, a Kangal will stand with its tail and ears erect and give an alarm call, inciting the sheep to gather around it for protection. The Kangal’s first instinct is to place itself between the perceived threat and the sheep or master. Once the sheep are safely behind it, the Kangal confronts the intruder. When faced with a wolf, the Kangal sometimes is successful in intimidating the enemy, but it will resort to a physical confrontation if the predator stands its ground. Specialized wolf killers are known as “kurtçul kangal” in their homeland.

Šarplaninac :

The Šarplaninac, Šarplaninec or Illyrian Sheepdog is a dog breed of the livestock guardian type originally from the border area between Kosovo, Macedonia and Albania (the Šar mountains). Appearance: The Šarplaninac is a large, strongly built dog. The body is slightly longer than the height at the withers, and the front legs account for approximately 55% of the height. The head is large but proportional to the body, with dark eyes. The Šarplaninac is a robust, well proportioned dog with plenty of bone, of a size that is well above the average and with a thick, long, rather coarse coat that emphasizes the short coupled appearance

22

Animals: Dogs

According to the FCI breed standard males should weigh between 35 and 45 kilograms (77 and 99 lb) with females slightly smaller at around 30–40 kilograms (66–88 lb). The average height is quoted as 62 centimetres (24 in) for males with females at 58 centimetres (23 in). The coat is dense, about 4 inches (10 cm) in length, and can be rough or smooth. All Šarplaninac are solid in colour: fawn, iron grey, white or almost black; usually sable or gray with darker “overalls” on the head and back, the undercoat being paler. The colour need not be completely uniform, and most Šarplaninac have several different shades of the same colour fading into one another. There are no bicolours and no uniformly black-coated dogs among purebreds, but odd-coloured specimens do exist. The dogs must not have large white patches in their coat.

23

Animals: Dogs

Temperament : The temperament of the breed is described as independent, reliable, protective but not snappy, incorruptible and devoted to its master. The breed is aloof with outsiders, and calm until a threat to the flock presents itself. The breed has an extremely protective nature. In the absence of a flock of sheep, the Ĺ arplaninac will often treat its humans as sheep - herding them away from danger or undesirable areas

24

They are serene and majestic, gentle with children and smaller dogs. They are also highly intelligent and bred to work without human supervision while guarding the flocks in the high pastures. Young pups can kill small animals until trained not to hunt. Like many of its cousin Mountain dogs, the Ĺ arplaninac is a very serious and dedicated guard dog. Due to this, they are naturally suspicious of strangers and will need good socializing at a young age to lessen this innate personality trait. They are calm and gentle with their family but when faced with danger they become a formidable foe, not a suitable breed for all. Consistent and firm training is essential to ensure compliance.

25

Working life: The Ĺ arplaninac is a reserved and intuitive breed, stubborn and undemonstrative, but if properly trained and handled with authority, it excels at a variety of tasks. Dog-aggression and wariness of strangers are common traits of the Ĺ arplaninac, which is why early socialization is of utmost importance. Heavily-boned and muscular, the dog has a full top-coat, with an abundant dense undercoat, making it weatherproof and suited for an outside life.

26

Animals: Dogs

The Ĺ arplaninac has been known to fight or chase off wolves, lynxes and even bears. The breed can also work cattle and serve as a guard dog. They were first used as military dogs in 1928 by the army of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes and later under Josip Broz Tito in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Nowadays these dogs are used by theMilitary of Serbia as guard dogs in mountainous regions. Since 1975, successful exports have been carried out to the United States and Canada to control coyotes, and the Ĺ arplaninac is now gaining recognition as a hard-working, able flock guard in these two countries.
