EWAN MCDERMOTT GRAPHIC DESIGN PORTFOLIO 2016

Hello.

My name is Ewan McDermott, I’m a designer from Glasgow, Scotland where I have recently graduated with a first class honours in Product Design & Innovation from the University of Strathclyde. Design for me is all about creating new experiences. Powerful design sticks in the mind of the user by creating a strong interpersonal connection and forming lasting memories as a result of its emotional impact. This represents my passion for design - the ability to create a smile This ambition of mine has developed through studying at the University of Strathclyde where I graduated with first class honours in ‘Product Design & Innovation’. The course has allowed me to explore other areas of design and as such has prepared me well for meeting the requirements of being a graphic designer. Since graduating I have dedicated my time to constantly improving my graphic design skills by participating in freelance work. This proactive mindset has assisted in establishing the skilled and cooperative designer that I am today.

Cinema has long been considered a gateway to infinite adventures and stories. This sense of wonder and excitement has recently been the inspiration behind a large marketing overhaul at Odeon Cinemas. During my time working with Odeon, I was approached by the regional manager for Scotland & North England to produce new POS sheets to advertise the advantages of a new loyalty card. The sheets are to be displayed in all cinema chains in the region, and replace the current sheets used by the company. The content has to incorporate Odeon’s branding guidelines and include future releases in order for it to stay relevant.

Analysis of Current Sheets The current POS sheets on display lacked any sense of detail and instead focused on large amounts of text. The sheets lacked consistency in their design and looked out of place. The text content on the sheets is overcrowded and in some instances, outdated and irrelevant (movies that have already been released).

To commemorate the work of the final year product design students, the Design, Manufacture and Engineering Management Department at the University of Strathclyde produce a showcase booklet presenting their final dissertation projects. Myself and a fellow student (also credited; Callum Kettles) were tasked with designing the booklet in a way that captured the creative spirit of design whilst also adhering to the strict branding guidelines of the University of Strathclyde. The final result was a booklet that capitalised on the requested colour scheme by incorporating the four main colours of each course into all aspects of the booklet.

Donuts are naturally a very lighthearted and hole-some (ahem) food that can be decorated in hundreds of different ways. This idea of experimentations and creativity through the power of food was something I wanted to investigate further with a fictional donut brand - Sprinkles. Basic branding guidelines were created, with additional promotional material that incorporated the given parameters.

To capture the quirkiness of the Sprinkles brand, a range of bright and complementary colours have been selected. This allows for a flexible system when creating branding material

Typeface Typo Round was selected as the typeface for the brand. Distinctive, warm and full of personality. The selected typeface is adaptable enough to be effective in all communications across the brand landscape. It is also digital friendly - essential for the multichannel world we live in.

For a product as precise and unique as a piece of jewellery, the branding behind also has to reflect this style. I was approached by a local jewellery designer and asked to create a logo that conveyed this idea of craftsmanship but could also involve a theme around the designers signature source of inspiration - the outdoors. The result is a clean logo that presents not only the idea of a ring, but the designers individual flair through the inclusion of a bud, an aspect prominent in many of her creations. The logo has been used for four months now and has already proven to be successful with both old and new customers.

In April 2016, a very close friend of mine tragically passed away as a result of meningitis. Whilst this was obviously a very difficult and testing time for all of us - a group of her friends came together to raise money for Meningitis Awareness. For my contribution, I designed a logo for the group, and co-ordinated with suppliers to have the logo printed on a t-shirt that could be worn at future events. The logo incorporates both Jennifer’s personal preference of tartan, whilst additionally including personal aspects of her appearance.

With the continuously evolving importance of social media, many creatives who rely on this format for sharing their content now need to think of new ways to keep up with the newest trends. A local filmmaker realised this and requested a logo to be designed that would be instantly recognisable and could stand out on both a plain and busy background. The result is a logo that focuses on solid shapes that form the initials of the client (W&L). The final logo is also flexible enough that it can still be recognised with or without the name and job title.

I am a self-confessed geek. In my spare time I enjoy recreating characters or events from movies and programmed in a minimalistic style. The following work examples I have been able to sell to family & friends and canvas prints.

Through photography I enjoy capturing experiences. These experiences can be translated as a particular moment of awe or inspiration that I later reflect on when creating designs.

University of Strathclyde Product Design & Innovation BSc

I am a recent graduate looking to break into the design industry. I get my kicks out of perfectly aligning pictures together and believe that document margins are the pillars that keep design standing. I believe that design should be clever and imaginative - things shouldnt always be in #00000 and #ffffff. My favourite movie is Forrest Gump.
