An Exclusive Resorts Member and resident of Park City, UT, DJ lives in an idyllic spot for both wildlife and landscape photography. He loves hitting the trails and searching for a cool scene. In 2018 he took more than 10,000 photos. His photos have been featured in magazines and on websites, but mostly hang on the walls of his friends and family’s homes.

Mark has lived out of a suitcase for most of his adult life. He writes for the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, and Condé Nast Traveler, where he is a contributing editor. He’s interviewed the world’s oldest supermodel, trekked to a $10 billion art island in rural Japan and spent a weekend in an all-psychic town. Mark is the author of Bargain Fever: How to Shop in a Discounted World, which explores our culture’s snowballing obsession with deals and discounts, from Prada to Primark.

Oliver has a high tolerance for risk and a high handicap to match, but he never lets that get him down. When playing a new course he always familiarizes himself first with the snack bar and then with the right side fairway bunkers, because scrambling on an empty stomach is no fun!

When you think of all the impressive work by National Geographic photographers, Antarctica photos stand out. And I’m going in February, 2020! Never Thought I’d Experience I was in Patagonia on a glacial-fed lake called Lago Grey. As we boated out, the clouds sat quite low and I couldn’t see much. As we got close to the glacier, the clouds began to rise and part. I thought to myself, “this may be the most beautiful scene I have ever beheld.”

Most Memorable Speakeasy Find At PDT, a bar in New York hidden inside a hot dog fast food joint, the bathrooms are dazzlingly trippy. They look like the inside of Liza Minnelli’s mind. am sure you are as thrilled as I am knowing summer is quickly approaching. I have always loved the change of seasons, but most especially the transition into summer. The long, sunny days seem to allow more time for conversations—more time to slow down and connect with loved ones. Summer is also synonymous with travel. There always seems to be an anxious energy to get out and explore after being cooped up during the cold winter months. Plus, occasions to celebrate are never lacking—be it a graduation, birthday, wedding, or the simple fact that school is out. Whether a week-long vacation or just a weekend away, we believe it’s important to take time to recognize those special moments and milestones. You all know the phrase “if these walls could talk,” and sometimes I really do wish I could hear all the incredible stories of families and friends who have had the opportunity to spend time connecting in our residences. Laughter, tears, new traditions, expanding families—we’ve seen it all. Take Kiawah Island, for example, a perfect location for family reunions, golf getaways, couples’ trips, and more. Countless memories have been made on this tiny island and is one of the reasons we expanded our collection of residences there last year. Then there are places like New York City. Letter from the Editor

he first time I visited Charleston, South Carolina, I was buzzing with anticipation. As a Georgia native, I considered it the romantic gem of the South; mysterious even, with lavish plantations, haunted mansions, and cobblestone streets. I imagined it a window to the past—an American city with a serious sense of place. I quickly discovered it was indeed a special part of the world. Every aspect of Charleston is seductive, from the city’s storied buildings and low country cuisine to its genteel Southern accents and swaying seagrass. But it was when I visited Kiawah Island that I really fell for the area. With 10 miles of beaches, 30 miles of biking and walking trails, and incredible wildlife, it’s easy to understand why it has been a Member favorite for 15 years and counting. In this issue, we’ll take you on a food-filled tour of Charleston, with Exclusive Resorts’ Kiawah Island residences as your posh, yet decidedly laidback headquarters. Insider Access: John Isner’s Wimbledon & London written by jen murphy

tennis star john isner’s feats of endurance are stuff of sports legend. The name of the 6-foot-10 former NCAA all-American is immortalized on a plaque outside of Wimbledon’s Court 18, where, in 2010, he defeated Nicolas Mahut in the longest match in tennis history. The famous bout was a remarkable five-set drama that lasted 11 hours and five minutes, spread over the course of three days. In 2018, he cemented his reputation for competing in long-duration matches, logging the lengthiest semifinal in Wimbledon history, a six-hour, 36-minute battle he ultimately lost to South African Kevin Anderson. Currently ranked 9th by the Association of Tennis Professionals Tour, the 33-year-old still has ambitions of winning a Grand Slam event. Wimbledon, the most prestigious tournament in tennis, will always, he says, be a special tournament for him.

“The only thing I can compare it to is the Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club,” he says. “It’s so steeped in tradition. I’m always amazed how this very quaint, sleepy little town comes alive during the tournament. It attracts fans from around the world every single year.” Wimbledon Village is also where Isner proposed to his wife, Madison McKinley, in 2017. She’ll be returning this year with their daughter to cheer him on from the stands. Here, Isner shares his tips for navigating the Tournament, plus not-to-miss attractions in London.

ISNER’S TRAVEL TIPS: If coming from the city, take the Underground District Line to Southfields. It drops you right in the Village and from there it’s a short walk to the stadium. Strawberries and cream and Pimm’s are Wimbledon staples when it comes to food and drink. This goes for any Grand Slam tournament: Go the first four days of the tournament when there are several matches going on. The courts are full everywhere and it’s a much more intimate viewing experience. The Fox & Grapes is a traditional English pub in Wimbledon Village, with a menu of fishcakes and steaks. I took my wife to dinner here the night before I proposed. Even though London is a massive city, it doesn’t feel that way because there are so many green spaces. I always like to spend some time wandering Hyde Park and the Royal Parks. I love how historic London is. I always recommend a visit to the House of Commons. It’s so neat and full of history.

A quick flight from Miami, The Abaco Club on Winding Bay features a Scottish-style links course in a more temperate setting. Palm trees replace grazing sheep on these tropical tees, but the pot bunkers remain—though they are filled with gleaming Bahamian beach sand—and the contoured greens are built to play firm and fast. Designed by distinguished British architects Donald Steel and Tom Mackenzie, the championship course is home to the Great Abaco Classic, a stop on the Web.com tour. It’s sunnier than Scotland but wind remains a welcomed challenge, with gusts reaching 25 miles per hour in the final round of this years’ Classic.

Scottsdale is home to more than 200 golf courses; they speckle the Sonoran Desert like green oases. Troon North Golf Club represents an iconic desert interpretation of links golf by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Moorish. Weiskopf is a British Open Champion, and though you will find more cacti at Troon than in the UK, there are plenty of nods to Scotland throughout the Monument course. The fifth hole is known as the “Swale”; hole nine is named “Hell Bunker” (an ode to a particularly unfriendly sand trap on The Old Course); and the 18th is simply called “St Andrews.”

members pat dipietrantonio and Don DeCarlo joined Exclusive Resorts for The Club’s extensive Residence Collection. A chance encounter at The Club’s flagship property in Costa Rica launched a friendship neither could have expected. Over the years, their circle of friends within The Club has grown to include Members Michael Bushkoff, Greg Tedesco, and Fred Saint. The five men, along with their wives, are now regular vacation buddies. Here, DiPietrantonio and DeCarlo reflect on what drew the group together and some of their most memorable trips.

how did the two of you strike up a conversation in costa rica? It was Thanksgiving 2007 and my wife, Karen, and I were with our family when we met Don. pat:

We hung out a bit that week, and exchanged phone numbers and about every month we’d exchange a text or two. Don had convinced me to sign up for a Seabourn cruise with The Club. My wife was hesitant. We live in Oklahoma, so we decided to all meet and get reacquainted at the Exclusive Resorts residences in Laguna Beach. don:

how did you decide to go on a seabourn cruise with the club?

At the time, my son was going to USC and his roommate’s parents ended up having the same Exclusive Resorts Ambassador as we did. We met them on move-in day, started a friendship, and agreed to go on this cruise with them. I texted Don immediately saying he had to join.

your friend group grew on the cruise. how did that happen?

pat:

I’m from New York and my Ambassador told me another couple from New York, Greg and Connie Tedesco, would be aboard and I should say hello. Turns out I had met them previously on a wine tour with The Club. Karen and I initially joined Exclusive Resorts so we could have our family together in one place. We never thought of the social aspect. pat:

We’ve now been on three Exclusive Resorts cruises. On the first one, no one knew us. Now we have friends we always see on these Journeys. We’re all very type-A and outgoing. Put us together, and wow! I never joined to meet other people but it turned out to be a nice bonus. My face hurts from laughing after a week with our ER group. don:

We’ve been to each other’s homes and on vacations with Exclusive Resorts. This spring, the Saints and Bushkoffs are going on a cruise to Tahiti. Pat and his wife are joining my wife Susan and me on Maui. Last fall, four of the five guys went to Kiawah Island to golf. All five families got together for Thanksgiving one year in Costa Rica. Each family got their own residence and we did a dinner for 30 or so.

how do you choose a location? I’m not sure place is as important as logistics and the ability of the five couples to get somewhere. Our second cruise wasn’t a lot different than the first Italian cruise. One went north; one went south. But the attitude of our group is, who cares as long as we’re together somewhere warm. don:

a lot of people say it’s harder to make real friendships as we age. why has your group been able to bond so strongly? As years go by, you start to wonder: maybe I have too many friends. And so perhaps later in life you don’t try as hard. We’ve all been Members quite some time and our needs have changed over the years. We used to travel as families, but our kids have grown and we realize we like traveling with other Members. We will go weeks without talking and that’s okay. Lately we text each other almost daily about something silly. pat:

I think every couple in their own hearts knows this is something special. If one couple can’t make a trip, we don’t force it. We meet when we can. It’s also not just the men. Our wives all get along and do their own girl trips. don:

Skyscanner has one function most other flight-finding apps omit—the ability to enter no destination as you search. Instead, the “explore” function simply highlights deals to fuel your wanderlust; from there you can sub-filter by date, class of flight, window of travel, and more. As an example, Skyscanner reveals coach-class non-stops to Tokyo for $700 roundtrip and business-class seats just shy of $3,000—both a good 50 percent cheaper than average.

Even if you regularly fly business class, often some leg of a trip may find you stuck at Gatwick for five hours on a coach-class ticket— meaning lounge entry may be a challenge. Enter Lounge Buddy. The app is also handy because it shows standard pricing akin to a black car in a foreign country, so you won’t get ripped off. That means you can compare the two-hour train ride for $18 in rural Vietnam to the $50 private car ride that cuts an hour off your journey.

This is an excellent app for your creative or bored teen. Daily video highlights are captured in a tight, one-second moment, so they have to really think (rather than idly Instagram) about what they want to most remember from their travels. training for a triathlon, whether it’s a sprint distance (.5-mile swim, 12.4-mile bike, 3.1-mile run) or a full IRONMAN (2.4mile swim, 112-mile bike, 26.22-mile run), “doesn’t have to be daunting,” says Earl Walton, Global Director of Training for IRONMAN. With more than 20 years experience coaching elite athletes, Walton knows what it takes to get to the finish line, and how to have fun along the way. Here are his top tips.

don’t get hung up on skipping a workout

Triathlon training is an exercise in time management. “Even I can be hard on myself when I miss a workout, but rest is an important part of training,” Walton explains. He tells his athletes to look at their workouts over the course of a month versus a week. “When you tell yourself I have to get in 12 bike rides in four weeks, it’s easier to be ok with skipping a day,” he says. “There’s not as much pressure to get it all done in a week. And realistically, the real impact comes over the course of six weeks, not one.”

You can bike and run as much as you want, but the real key is doing them back-to-back during workouts. “When you get off the bike and start running, you’re using a whole different energy system,” he says. “You’re going from a hunched-over position—where your hip flexors are crunched and compressed and the quads are tired from effort—to an upright position where you need the posterior chain—your hamstrings, glutes, and low back—ready to fire.” When you start running, your legs often feel heavy like bricks, hence the name ‘brick workout,’ which involves tacking on a run right after a hard bike ride. Practicing the transition prepares athletes mentally for the initial discomfort.

Endurance sports, by nature, are repetitive, but your workouts don’t have to be. “As a coach, I always want to challenge the way my athlete is interacting with an effort or environment,” he says. For example, he might have athletes swim with paddles one day and with closed fists and fins the next. Or he might have athletes ride 12 minutes on the bike then run eight minutes on a treadmill on and off, alternating the speed and incline of the treadmill.

Walton suggests picking one discipline and signing up for a multi-day camp. “I am a huge believer in getting away and immersing yourself in a sport,” he says. “I promise, after four days of riding a bike with a coach, group, or friend you come out a better cyclist.” He says swimming camps are particularly useful. “Having a coach take underwater video of you and work on little changes in stroke technique will translate to more confidence in the water and faster times,” he says.

when exclusive resorts Members Rosemary Dunbar and her husband, retired lawyer Barry Murphy, were looking to launch their boutique wine label, they drew inspiration from Rosemary’s life as an artist. The couple wanted to stand out amid the mass production and commodification of everything, wine included. “This was to be made carefully, by us, on a small scale,” Dunbar says. But so many artsy terms they considered—sketchbook or perspective, for example—were already registered. What about silverpoint, she wondered? Artists using this Renaissance-era technique, like da Vinci and Michelangelo, took a fine silver wire to sketch on a gesso-covered surface; it allowed them to work in more detailed ways than either pencil or brush. “The precision, the delicacy—that was just what we were striving for.”

That was just over a decade ago. Since then, the Napa-based duo has carved out an impressive niche among boutique wineries. Silverpoint Cellars is renowned for its Chardonnay from the Petaluma Gap and a Napa Valley Red, blended from four Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot). Rather than investing in land, however, Barry and Rosemary opted to develop long-term relationships with top grape growers, and hire a facility to produce it on their behalf—all under the guidance of renowned winemaker Don Van Staaveren. He first found fame in the 1990s via his award-winning Bordeaux blend for Chateau St. Jean (his wife, Margo, is equally accomplished, helming all operations for Treasury Estates, which includes Beringer). Barry and Rosemary have made an equally long-term commitment to Napa—the California natives returned to their roots to be closer to family. Exclusive Resorts Members since their three children were in grade school, they still travel extensively, usually on a Once-in-a-Lifetime Journey. They experienced Japan in 2014, Antarctica in 2015, and are considering Rwanda next. Anyone should add Napa to a travel bucket-list, though, they add. “It’s a combination of what we love about Provence and Tuscany,” says Murphy. “You can live in great, rural beauty but sacrifice nothing in terms of food, wine, and culture.” He recommends the astonishing modern art collection at the Hess winery. “No one is ever there. We can’t believe it,” he says. And make time to visit the di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art, also attached to a winery. Nothing is better, he stresses, than the simplest pleasures of their adoptive home: the farmers’ markets, especially in St. Helena every summer. “There’s bocce, a mellow guy with a guitar, and produce beyond comprehension.” —silverpointcellars.com

in september 2018, chefs from Park City restaurants Handle, Tupelo Park City, Riverhorse on Main, Stein Eriksen Lodge, and Deer Valley Resort presented a dinner at New York’s iconic James Beard House, celebrating the mountain town’s culinary reputation on a global stage. “Mountain town visitors usually expect some quick dining option during a break from recreation, but Park City dining has genuinely evolved over the years,” says Director of Communications at Visit Park City, Dan Howard. Here’s a firsthand account of what not to miss.

After landing in Salt Lake City and Uber-ing 40 minutes to Park City, my first stop is Handle. Located in Old Town, its varied menu of small bites and larger plates is indicative of its creative vibe. Chef Briar Handly serves a regularly evolving menu inspired by locally sourced produce and creative cocktails. Start with the General Tso’s Cauliflower—a vegan version of the traditional dish, followed by the Fried Chicken Breast, crisp and tender, with a hint of spice and miso cremeux to finish. —handleparkcity.com

No visit to Park City is complete without a visit to High West, Utah’s first legal distillery since 1870. Today, this gastrodistillery, saloon, and restaurant teases the most discerning cocktail connoisseur. Surprisingly, Utah (which has some of the most restrictive alcohol laws in the U.S.) has a long-standing tradition of distilling spirits. According to hooch historians at High West, the state’s early pioneers distilled alcohol as “medicine,” despite Brigham Young’s prohibition of saloons. They crafted the Valley Tan cocktail, “the exclusive Mormon refresher” as Mark Twain once described. Taste Valley Tan, or my favorite: Campfire, a blend of rye, bourbon, and scotch. —highwest.com

Though mountain towns love steakhouses, sushi is paramount, too. Located in Old Town, Yuki Yama, which translates to “Snow Mountain,” brings the heart of Japan to the Wasatch Mountains. bellion vodka is the world’s first “functional” spirit. Its mad scientist-esque inventor, Indian-American entrepreneur Harsha Chigurupati, spent $35 million and over a decade devising the holy grail of happy hour: healthy liquor. He claims his firm’s proprietary formula, NTX (say it: no-tox) can indemnify your liver against the ravages of overindulgence, thanks to ingredients like an anti-inflammatory derived from licorice root. One of its own studies claimed biomarkers for liver damage were 93 percent lower in tipsy testers when they sipped Bellion versus a conventional vodka. The U.S. government isn’t convinced, however, as Chigurupati is yet to see his claims endorsed by any official certification. But he isn’t alone. There’s a burgeoning business in low or no-alcohol drinks aiming to combine good health and good times.

purewine: the magic wand? Take PureWine, whose products act like a Brita filter for Bordeaux. Their filtration devices claim to remove hangover-causing impurities from red wine, including sulfites and histamines. Inventor David Meadows (based in Grapevine, Texas, naturally) offers two products: The Wand153, which users stir through a glass of wine, and the Wave153, which attaches to a bottle like a nozzle to purify the contents as you pour. A former pharma executive, Meadows worked on the patented technology in response to his own headaches and sore throats when drinking 40

red wine. He claims he’s one of the 35 percent of U.S. adults who suffer allergic reactions to Cabernet Sauvignon and other red wines. “Histamines are produced during the primary fermentation process, when yeasts digest the proteins found in the skins of red grapes,” he explains, “Nine European countries actually have regulated the amount of histamine permitted to be in wines imported into their country.”  Some people can metabolize the histamine in wine, beer, and other foods and have no adverse reactions, yet too much histamine can lead to inflammation in the lungs, nose, and skin.

Many of them have responded by tweaking menus, adding lower ABV drinks (known as shims), or recipes with healthboosting ingredients. You can sip an ice-cold martini at New York’s Dimes with a shot of wheatgrass, while London’s Farmacy features drinks with anti-oxidant properties. If you want to make them at home, snap up a copy of the book, Doctor’s Orders, by Chris Edwards and Dave Trengenza, the duo behind London’s First Aid Box. The tome features drinks which are also true tonics, with recipes aimed at ailments from easing pain to curing a hangover.

These are botanical tinctures, akin to gin, which even confirmed teetotalers can enjoy. Seedlip’s UK inventor Ben Branson created the category and the company is now part-owned by drinks giant Diageo. Rivals include Ceders “alt-gin” from South Africa and the amaro-style MeMento.

Since it opened six years ago, New York’s Dead Rabbit bar has repeatedly earned the title of best bar in the world from global cocktail juries. The accolade is deserved not just for its drinks, but also for the painstaking attention to detail shown by co-owners Sean Muldoon and Jack McGarry. The menus, in particular, are proven keepsakes. A new one is introduced each year, on the anniversary of the bar’s February opening, and designs have ranged from a history-packed ode to how Manhattan became a cocktail mecca to a graphic tale of Irish gangsters. art has come a long way, from petroglyphs in the prehistoric age to contemporary art birthed in the 1970s. Meant to inspire, engage, and fascinate, the art world is constantly shifting, and 33-year-old, Denver-based artist Santiago Ignacio is helping define the modern movement. Ignacio’s progressive approach to multimedia art is establishing him as a young trailblazer, and his work graces dozens of private homes and collections. Ignacio, who moved to Denver from Mexico in 2016, has been working with multimedia and multidisciplinary art since he was five years old. “My mother surrounded me with art. As a kid, I was inspired by architecture and statues all over Mexico,” he recalls. “I knew I wanted to express myself through art when I grew up.”

Since childhood, Ignacio relied heavily on art—often both his refuge and inspiration to understand the world around him—and he became disciplined in the contemporary wave of multimedia and multidimensional art. This specific art form merges unconventional techniques, elements, and approaches across various mediums. Ignacio carved a signature aesthetic; he creates a canvas in the form of a painting or photo and then manipulates it with forward-thinking, creative layers for an abstract, hyper-realistic interpretation. The majority of his work emphasizes technology. “I would describe my work as ‘progressive mind expansion’,” he says. “When I work on the digital details, I focus on colors, shapes, and patterns.”

Ignacio’s work is shown in various cities across Mexico, and he recently lured the attention of international buyers in Dubai after being profiled in Harpers Bazaar Arabia. He has also recently worked with Exclusive Resorts; pieces of his multimedia art were commissioned for five Club residence in Los Cabos. “I was excited to blend my aesthetic with the choice of Mexican folk art, playing with color and using three-dimensional and digital embellishments,” he says. “I was happy to see my DNA in the work and have a representation of Mexican art that also represented me.” Ignacio explains each piece in the Los Cabos residences have a different interpretation and story. All are inspired by alebrijes—brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures—and are comprised of digital images. The wood and hand-painted pieces are designed to conjure a feeling of celebration. “My clients call me and tell me they have discussions with friends, family, and their little ones who ask question after question about my work. I love that.”

today’s mountain home can be many things: a gathering place for family and friends, a cozy retreat from the chaos of city life, a doorway to the world of nature, or a respite from a mountain storm. And in classic ski resorts like Beaver Creek, Colorado—one of the chicest alpine communities in the American West—the mountain home must also reflect the specific location, its people and, for Exclusive Resorts, its Members. Two signature Beaver Creek residences in the Vacation Collection recently underwent an interiors transformation. At the helm of this journey were Ron Werner and Jim Hering, owners and co-founders of Colorado-based HW Home. Twenty years ago, they opened the first of four HW Home retail locations in Boulder, CO, and later opened their design studio and custom furniture business, bridging the gap between high-end design and homogenized retail. “Jim and I have developed an interesting hybrid,” says Werner. “HW Home is a design firm and yet we have mastered procurement and remote installations along with retail core competencies. We understand the demographic of the users, and are sensitive to wear-ability, durability, and sustainability.”

Because they work with various global Exclusive Resort properties, the team understands the totality of The Club, yet acknowledges the importance of each property’s personality. “Each Club property is unique,” he says. “Exclusive Resorts wants to make sure every piece is fresh and every look holds up.” To achieve this in the two spacious Beaver Creek residences, HW Home transformed the interiors from what Werner describes as “old school mountain”—an aesthetic synonymous with the 1980s and 90s and featuring multiple fabrics, dark woods, and heavy “Tuscan inspired” details—into a streamlined, mountain modern design. The top-to-bottom remodel of the homes included the replacement of furniture, lighting, linens, and carpets, while employing rich natural palettes and a mix of attractive materials. “We respect the mountain look, so we brought in fresh and current designs without being too modern,” he says. “You won’t find a white leather sofa with metal legs in a mountain modern house we are doing.”

What will you find? Modern pieces juxtaposed with artwork evoking a sense of western wonder and nods to the natural world through furniture design and imagery. Werner and Hering also created custom pieces for the homes via their own furniture label, True HW Home. The duo designed a custom sectional-sleeper covered in a durable fabric that cleans easily “even if SpaghettiOs were spilled on the sofa.” The pieces are chic, but more importantly, comfortable. “If the furniture is not comfortable in a mountain home, what good is it? If you are skiing all day, when you finally get home, all you want to do is snuggle up and relax.”

There’s no such thing as a bad view on Kiawah Island.

The arrival? Breathtaking, with ancient oak trees spreading high and wide across the entry—a sort of untouched Southern boulevard—to form a canopy interrupted only by the spackled sunlight peeking through the broad leaves. The estates? Faintly antebellum yet grand and contemporary, with whitewashed wood siding and dramatic double-height ceilings. And then there’s the beach: Perfectly pristine slice of white sand lined with tall ferns that dance in the breeze like synchronized swimmers. Just beyond, the rolling hills of the world-famous Ocean Course are the purest hues of green imaginable. No bad angles, indeed. Taking it all in for the first time, you’d be forgiven for thinking that everything on Kiawah is just about perfect. And if you’re sitting on the bow of Captain Nick Penna’s speedboat, meandering through Kiawah River, you might be right. From the waterborne vantage point, the 10,000-acre barrier island, which sits just 25 miles south of Charleston, is a Low Country fantasy come to life. The water is smooth like glass, and each little island has its own story and potential: One, reached only by boat, is for the best summer picnics; just across the water, another is a sanctuary for sea turtle hatchlings come spring. Up above that way, a magnificent bald eagle stands atop a tall maple tree, surveying the water for prey. And down below, more dolphins than I’ve ever seen.

As Captain Nick slows the boat and the cool wind on our faces abruptly stops, we carefully stand in silence. For a second it looks like a scene from Jaws, as we approach the edges of the boat with trepidation, but we’re waiting for something far more cheerful than a shark—a family of bottlenose dolphins has been stalking us all afternoon, and it’s time to play. They crisscross beneath us, popping out on port then twirling back to starboard, then in unison cresting the water to show off their gracefully arched fins. “There’s the baby,” Nick says, pointing to an emerging fin smaller than the others. Having made leisure cruising his enviable vocation, he spends enough time out here to know them well—and there’s a few hundred of the mammals in this area. At low tide, he often sees them sunning themselves and feeding on fish right on shore. They might be enjoying themselves more than any other creature on the planet.

Barefoot Luxury That’s saying a lot on Kiawah Island, which seems to have been made for one thing only: pure enjoyment. Originally developed in the 1970s, the community is an idealized version of Low Country life (after all, it’s not everywhere in these parts where you can play with dolphins practically on command). With five award-winning golf courses, a world-class spa, several restaurants and bars, and nine spectacular estates in the Exclusive Resorts Residence Collection, it’s a mini-paradise, where there’s something for everyone, and every age. It’s easy to want to stay put—and plenty of visitors certainly do, says Leslie Cowell, Exclusive Resorts’ South Carolina-based Regional Director of Operations. “Most people spend some time in Charleston on the way out from the airport, or on the way back, but once they are on Kiawah, they stay on Kiawah.” You can’t blame them, and yet, part of the beauty of this retreat is its close proximity to what has recently become one of the South’s most innovative culinary hubs. If you’re a foodie (and even if you’re not, we promise you will be soon enough) there’s too much waiting just beyond that oak-lined Kiawah entrance to pass up a trip to “the outside.”

The Gourmand’s Hit List

During a day trip to Charleston from Kiawah, we hit the road, thirsty and hungry, with a delicious to-do list. We first land in downtown, which could easily be renamed “Quintessential Charleston” for its collection of antebellum mansions, rows of manicured palmettos, and iconic landmarks like the famous Rainbow Row. Amid all that history though, and hidden behind newly painted facades of historic structures, are trendy new restaurants and hotels, bars and boutiques, all blending a bit of classic Low Country with a touch of modern edge. At the Bar at Husk, that combination translates to a speakeasy set in a Victoria-era estate, where everything is a throwback with a contemporary tinge. On the menu, the Charleston Light Dragoons Punch is a strong (literally) example of past and present: Using an 18th-century recipe unearthed at the Preservation Society of Charleston, the libation—a favorite of the local light dragoons, a fancy term for a group of privileged young cavalrymen who ruled the city way back when—is a re-creation of black tea, brandy, rum, and new for the 21st century, peach rum. It’s a taste of history in a place that manages to feel equally antiquated and of-the-moment.

Though tempted, we skip Husk’s legendary burger and instead embark on a barbecue crawl. Low Country ’cue is its own special breed—the meat is slow-cooked, the sauce is vinegary, and the restaurant claiming the best depends on who you talk to. We head north to follow a trail of nearly every type, and emerge some three hours later quite full and with our own list of bests: Rodney Scott’s BBQ—a James Beard Award winner—is our top pick for pulled pork; Lewis impresses for brisket and a spicy green-chili cornbread; and for something completely modern, we crown Butcher & Bee the unofficial best vegan “pulled pork.” The sandwich combines shredded squash with smoked cabbage, barbecue sauce, and pickles for one of the most successful impostor dishes we’ve ever tried. The variety is a testament to Charleston’s newfangled culinary acumen, says Cowell. “There’s a real identity in culinary here,” she explains. “Everybody has their own take on the classics, whether it’s shrimp and grits or pulled pork. We always knew we had a good scene here, but now all of a sudden the world knows.” CURATED / Spring + Summer 2019

Charleston: Past Meets Present in the Design District

The challenge during any trip to Charleston, however, is staying hungry enough to experience it all. To continue any further in our culinary exploration requires a bit of exercise, and so we head north by foot on King Street, peeking our heads into the trendy shops selling peacock-feather bowties and raw denim in the burgeoning Upper King Design District. Along this lively road, if a historic structure hasn’t been transformed into the next cool purveyor, it has been landmarked and perfectly preserved. We cross Marion Park to the new Dewberry Hotel (located, of course, in a historic government building), to take it all in from the rooftop terrace with 360-degree views that stretch from the Port of Charleston to the Ashley River.

By late afternoon, we’re contemplating the most delicious route out of town and back to Kiawah. A few blocks up King Street, we make our final stop at the Ordinary, a restaurant that proves anything but, serving oysters hailing from all over the Atlantic out of a bar that, upon closer inspection, is the old vault from a historic bank. Such dramatic surprises have become commonplace in our little culinary experiment, so we sit down and order a half-dozen each of the Savage Blondes and Seaborn Selects while the cocktail bar—another speakeasy that looks of then and now—bustles with the sounds of ice rattling in shakers. By the time the shadows are growing long, we’re ready to return to paradise, so we hop back in the car and make the short 45-minute drive back to Kiawah. Having arrived just in time for sunset, we join families, golfers, and happy couples at the Ryder Cup Bar at the Ocean Course. Somehow still hungry and a little bit thirsty, we watch a golden sun light up the sky like a cotton-candy-colored painting. The waves crash while the ferns dance, and every iPhone is out for the perfect sunset shot. After all, there are no bad angles here.

FAMILY MATTERS: MULTI-GENERATIONAL LIVING See The first summer homes were built on Kiawah in 1954. how does a home qualify as part of the exclusive resorts residence collection? There are so many things we look for in a residence before it’s added to our Portfolio. Of course, the top priority is finding the right destination. We are constantly searching the globe for our next destination based on Member feedback and intelligence from our global network of luxury resort brands, developers, and industry experts. Once we find a destination we love, we look for the best places to be in that destination. Different Members like different types of residences, so we look for a balance between stand-alone residences and residences within a resort community. Some Members want to be able to order room service and have access to a resort pool and kids’ programs, while others prefer a quieter experience where they feel like part of the local community. And then, of course, the residence itself needs to be outstanding—being designed, built, and decorated to the highest standards, with large gathering spaces and beautiful outdoor areas that allow Members to spend time together rather than being relegated to separate hotel rooms. Additionally, we always look for those must-have features like gourmet kitchens, private pools and hot tubs, and expansive balconies and patios. what about the residence collection sets exclusive resorts apart from other luxury destination clubs? What sets us apart is having a Portfolio of residences we own, which only Members are allowed to use. Wild at Heart a photo essay by Club Member dj brooks

exclusive resorts member DJ Brooks happened upon photography via mountain biking. After building a career as an equity derivatives trader in Asia, and working in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, and London, he lived an adrenaline-filled life with financial rewards yet growing stress. So, he “checked out at a young age and got into investing in early-stage start-ups,” he recalls. “My father died at a young age and I was determined to enjoy life.” After tackling mountain climbing, adventure racing, IRONMAN events, and mountain biking, he started competing in global races. During a mountain bike race in South Africa, a wildebeest ran alongside him—a pivotal and memorable moment furthering his passion for wildlife. And while training for a race in Bariloche, Argentina, Brooks and his teammate—who happened to be a talented photographer—would test their endurance by day and then train their cameras on various landscapes by night. “That trip was the impetus for my passion for photography. I’m normally a very analytical person. Photography has brought out an artistic side I didn’t know existed.” These days, he adds, “You will rarely find me without a camera.” In 2018, he took more than 10,000 photos. Here’s some of his finest.
