The employee’s line manager will be Charles Parker,

the Chief Executive of the Baker Dearing Educational Trust. The postholder will work closely with the marketing director and with support from an external fundraising consultant.

Introduction University Technical Colleges (UTCs) have been developed by the Baker Dearing Educational Trust (BDT), in response to repeated demands from industry for an increased number of well-educated, high status technicians. The Baker Dearing Trust owns and promotes the UTC brand in order to develop and promote the emerging network of colleges. University Technical Colleges are: • New sponsored academies for 14-19 year olds with around 500-800 students, and a longer school day • Backed by a university and industry sponsors, and often FE colleges • Offering a curriculum that focuses on technical education The Baker Dearing Trust is needed to support the pipeline of potential University Technical Colleges and to enhance the impact of those already established. The Trust exists: • To promote the University Technical College concept and secure the opening of 100 UTCs across the country, educating up to 80,000 young people • To support University Technical Colleges so they provide a high quality education, ensuring excellent outcomes for their students • To protect the concept of the University Technical Colleges against erosion and contamination, maintaining and sustaining the brand

Job Description The Role The Baker Dearing Educational Trust has formed successful funding partnerships with major UK grantmakers including the Gatsby Foundation, Edge Foundation, the Garfield Weston Foundation. The charity now wishes to build on this success by implementing a sustainable fundraising, communications and marketing programme, led and coordinated by a development executive who will work closely with the executive team and trustees of the charity. The postholder will work as part of a small, dedicated team, with the support of an impressive and engaged board of trustees. They are likely to have several years experience in a fundraising or marketing environment, ideally with knowledge of the education or charity sectors. This role presents the opportunity for the postholder to broaden their experience in a range of fundraising and communications disciplines. The role will have a significant impact on the development of University Technical Colleges and on the education of thousands of young people. Fundraising •

To identify, research and map national and regional funding opportunities for the Baker Dearing Educational Trust

To complete funding applications to grant-awarding trusts, and corporations.

To manage a pool of potential donors, involving other colleagues as appropriate to maximise income

To keep accurate and up-to-date records about funders and their requirements, including tailored and generic donor reports

To keep accurate records of funding applications and their progress

To provide briefings and support as appropriate to the Chief Executive and to trustees who are involved actively in the fundraising process

To prepare reports for the Chief Executive and Trustee Board

Communications and marketing •

To be an effective ambassador for the Baker Dearing Trust, meeting with a wide variety of national and local representatives, grantawarding trusts, community representatives and prospective donors and sponsors

Handling external communications for BDT, including press activity

Writing brochures, press releases and other copy or acting as a project manager to commission freelance writing

To organise marketing, fundraising and stewardship events in order to create long term beneficial relationships with donors and other friends

To undertake any task that may be requested from time to time that may be consistent with the nature and scope of this post

Person Specification Essential •

Have or be able to acquire quickly an understanding of the mission of the Baker Dearing Educational Trust

Have excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to write articulate reports, fundraising letters and grant applications

Demonstrable experience of working in the area of fundraising, marketing or similar disciplines such as business development

First rate IT skills and a high level of proficiency in word-processing and spreadsheets

Experience of events planning or project management in an employed or voluntary capacity

Be creative, energetic, enthusiastic and committed to the success of the Baker Dearing Trust and University Technical Colleges

Possess excellent interpersonal skills and be extremely diplomatic

Be highly self-motivated, able to prioritise tasks and work well as part of a team.

Have the ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines.

Be able to demonstrate initiative and flexibility.

Be ambitious to meet targets

Desirable •

Experience of employment in the charity or education sectors

Experience of bid writing for trusts and foundations

Experience of face-to-face fundraising
