WELCOME LETTER FROM THE HEADMASTER At Shrewsbury, we believe that school should be ‘serious fun’. This applies to the staff as much as it does the pupils. We live and work together in one of the most beautiful settings imaginable, with colleagues who are lively-minded and with pupils who are encouraged to express themselves as individuals, and act with integrity and humility. We are deeply committed to our work in inspiring and guiding the girls and boys in our care; and we are known for the warmth, breadth and variety of our community. An important part of this is a sincere belief in widening access to a Shrewsbury education and continuing to invest in our facilities. The welcome that my family and I received when we arrived at Shrewsbury School in August 2018 as its 28th Headmaster was remarkable. This is a community that has a strong sense of identity, and yet it absorbs newcomers (even Headmasters) with open arms. Over recent terms we have been forming our strategic plan for the next chapter in the School’s long history. At the heart of this is our mission to build funds to allow access to a Shrewsbury education to families who would otherwise not even think of it. The Shrewsbury School Foundation has a long track record of delivering. We enjoy huge loyalty from - and positive engagement with – the Old Salopian community. This role of Development Director is of central strategic importance to the School’s present and its future. The successful candidate will be joining a vibrant, motivated and diverse senior leadership team. She or he will enjoy my whole-hearted support as well as the advocacy and influence of an excellent and highly engaged Foundation Chair and Board of Trustees. This is a very exciting opportunity for us all.

THE SHREWSBURY SCHOOL FOUNDATION The Shrewsbury School Foundation is the oldest independent school foundation in the UK. Founded in 1964, the Foundation is a separate charity which supports the development functions of Shrewsbury School. While the School and Foundation trustees’ boards are run separately, there are close links, and the new Foundation Chair, James Pitt, is also a Governor of the School. Under a longstanding agreement, the Foundation fundraising staff are employees of Shrewsbury School. Shrewsbury School believes strongly in its social mission and charitable purposes and the Foundation plays a vital role in generating funds for the bursary programme which widens access to the School, and capital for major building projects. The Foundation has a successful track record of supporting the School over the last 50+ years and building and sustaining a strong donor base. Recent projects delivered with the support of the Foundation include Hodgson Hall (an inspiring teaching and learning building), the Chatri Building (a state-of-the-art design & technology block) and the Moser Library refurbishment, which now displays a wonderful collection of ancient books and 19th Century watercolours. The most recent campaign to raise funds for a re-imagined and extended Theatre is in its final stages with the target sum of £1.2 million raised in full, and construction is starting in July 2019. The Shrewsbury School Foundation is long-established and in excellent health. It is ably supported and championed by its Foundation Chair and other trustees and is now on the brink of an exciting new phase of progression under the new and engaged leadership.
