CANDIDATE INFORMATION PACK DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT ST ANNE'S COLLEGE, OXFORD
WELCOME LETTER You may be wondering if you want to work for an Oxford College. If so, then please let me assure you that if St Anne’s conformed to the stereotype of an Oxford College I wouldn’t be its Principal! I studied here as a student in the 1980s and I’ve now been Principal of St Anne’s for two years. What makes St Anne’s College a wonderful place to work is; •
•
Our values include being forward looking and outward facing: we’ve never been afraid to do things differently. This included our first ever Giving Day in March, the launch of a scholarship for Muslim students in April and a new initiative for underprivileged 6th formers in North East England in May. Our approach and motto is Purposefully and Boldly.
•
We’re friendly, down-to-earth and supportive: serious about what we do but we don’t take ourselves too seriously. You’ll be joining a College Officer team that I am proud of and enjoy working with. They’re all competent professionals in their field, work well together and genuinely care about the College and its people.
The sense of community between staff, students and academics, amongst whom there is huge diversity of backgrounds, interests and talents.
•
An Oxford education changes the lives of our students and we try to ensure that they can enjoy their time here and thrive. In time, I know many of them will go on to change the world. Many of our academics, through their research, already are changing the world. It’s a privilege to play a part in this.
Candidate Information Pack | Director of Development, St Anne's College, Oxford
The Director of Development is a really important role for us with broad responsibilities, including drawing together and delivering the philanthropic support needed for our ambitious plans in the run up to our 150 year anniversary in 2029. You’ll inherit a team of committed people and sound policies and record keeping. As a modern, former-women’s College, we don’t have a huge endowment to rely on and our alumnae* and donors span generations, sectors and continents. I really hope this sounds like an opportunity and challenge suited to you. If so, then please apply and I look forward to meeting you. Good luck! Yours sincerely, Helen King Principal
* The College uses the feminine Alumnae rather than Alumni in reference to both our female and male senior members. This is to respect our history as a former women’s College.

THE COLLEGE St Anne’s is a down-to-earth, friendly and independent-minded college, modern in its outlook and architecture and open to the world, informal and yet academically demanding. Since its founding in 1879, St Anne’s College has always been about widening access. It uniquely enabled women from all backgrounds to access an Oxford education, and the College is committed to securing its legacy and future by being a diverse and inclusive community that is the home of choice for the brightest and most ambitious from all backgrounds, including those who may think that Oxford is not for people like them.

Earlier this year, the Governing Body of St Anne’s reaffirmed the College’s purpose in this regard, contributing to the University’s commitment to lead the world in education and research, whilst securing the College’s legacy and future. St Anne’s wants to be the home of choice for the brightest and most ambitious students including those from underrepresented groups and believes that difference should be respected, promoted and celebrated as the diversity of people is a rich source of learning for us all. The College became co-educational in 1979 and it is now one of the largest colleges of the University of Oxford. St Anne’s has some 446 undergraduates and 300 graduates along with approximately 240 staff. Fellows’ interests range across the Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, Mathematics, Physical and Medical Sciences. The College is multidisciplinary, hosting undergraduates and graduates in all the subjects and degrees offered at Oxford. Situated to the north of the city centre, the College grounds have a distinctly campus feel to them.
Helen King, Principal since 2017, is a graduate of St Anne’s who took on the role after a thirty-year career in policing, including as an Assistant Commissioner in the Metropolitan Police. In 2018, the College undertook the St Anne’s 2025 Conversation to determine what the future of St Anne’s should look like, a process which took over six months and gathered views from students (prospective, undergraduate and graduate), parents, College staff, Senior Common Room members, alumnae, donors, St Anne’s Society branches and Emeritus and Senior Research Fellows. It was a tremendous privilege to hear the opinions of so many people who care deeply about the College. Many stories and insights from the past, and inspiring and ambitious ideas for the future were heard. The material gathered was condensed by the Governing Board through a number of engaging workshops to produce the College’s purpose which was formally ratified at the end of Hilary Term.

THE OPPORTUNITY Following the success of the College’s recent capital appeal to build a Library and Academic Centre, St Anne’s is now developing plans for its next campaign and the Director of Development will play an important role in shaping what this will look like and how it will be achieved. It is anticipated that this new campaign will run over the next 10 years, concluding in 2029 to coincide with St Anne’s 150th Anniversary. The postholder will need to be able to develop a good understanding of how St Anne’s functions and to engage with the College community as well as understand the complex relations and opportunities for donor-led collaboration between the College and other parts of the Collegiate University. Many prospective and current donors contribute regularly to more than one part of the collegiate University and sophisticated solicitation and stewardship procedures need to be created accordingly.
The Director of Development will work closely with the Principal, Treasurer and other key members of the College to raise funds that enable St Anne’s to deliver its vision for the future. The College has a track record of being innovative and forward-thinking in its approach to the challenges of growth. With strong and committed support from the Principal and the College Fellows, the Director will be responsible for the overall direction, management and performance of the Office with a key responsibility being securing private gift support from alumnae and non-alumnae for the College’s agreed priorities. These gifts will be cultivated and realised by working closely with the Principal, and as such this will be a vital relationship to the success of attracting major gifts for the College.
With significant milestones to be met over these ten years including the development of the Annual Fund, expansion of the College’s outreach work, the refurbishment of the Bevington Road student accommodation and the creation of a brand new accommodation block on site, the new campaign will incorporate a combination of both capital and revenue projects. The Director of Development will be able to develop a campaign that will draw together the fundraising needs of the College and create a coherent narrative to engage and inspire current and future supporters around the new campaign and beyond.

THE OPPORTUNITY The College has long established strong relationships with many of its alumnae through the St Anne’s Society (SAS) and its alumnae relations programme. The Development Office runs a successful Regular Giving Programme - currently around £550,000 on average per year is generated from alumnae sources to support the College raising funds for projects defined by the College’s strategy. Current areas of focus include funding for the Economics Fellowship, funds for the Outreach Strategy, and supporting key aspects of teaching such as Graduate Development Scholarships. Over the past four years, total gifts have averaged £2.8 million per year including legacies. The Director of Development is a key appointment for the College and will be a College Officer, expected to participate fully in College life. The previous postholder was a Fellow of the College. The successful candidate may similarly be put forward for election as a Fellow to the trustees of the College. The Director will be the visible face of Development for St Anne’s and will, on occasion, be expected to deputise for the Principal at both internal and external events and functions. They will attend Governing Body meetings as required.
The postholder will have a transformational impact on the College’s fundraising and in so doing, play a pivotal role in enabling St Anne’s to affect a step change in its capability to attract philanthropic funding and engage powerfully with its alumnae and non-alumnae stakeholders globally. The successful candidate will be an exceptional major gifts fundraiser who recognises that success in this role will be transformational not only for the College but also for their own career. The College is willing to consider candidates who may not have significant experience of working at this level but can demonstrate the potential and drive to succeed both personally and professionally within this role. This is an outstanding opportunity for someone who is able to take a sensitive yet creative approach to fundraising from a wideranging alumnae and stakeholder community, who can develop strong internal relationships to support this work, and who can lead and motivate their team to deliver the next phase of fundraising for St Anne’s College.
Face-to-face meetings and solicitation of key prospects is a fundamental part of this role and as such there will be the opportunity to travel both in the UK and internationally.
